The OMCs have kept fuel rates steady in the past few days even after international crude oil prices remain weak. Nikki-led NSCN (K) to sign CF with GoI of the overwhelming sentiments among Nagas for an early solution to the protracted issue. “We expect Government of India to respond positively by honouring our decision as a confidence building measure in the larger interests of peace in Nagaland and Naga people in general,” the statement read. Interacting with a group of people including some media persons on the outskirts of Dimapur in January this year, Nikki asserted that his group will take into confidence the wishes and desire of the Naga people for achieving an honorable and acceptable solution to the decades-old Naga political issue. He further stressed that unity among the Nagas was paramount for any kind of lasting solution that would be acceptable to all. “If all
the groups cannot come and sit together and the public representatives cannot bear witness, there is no point in having dialogue,” he said. Nikki maintained that the decision to join the peace talks or to revive the ceasefire was to fulfil the wishes and aspirations of the Nagas- to give peace a chance and not with the expectation that the Government of India withdraw the cases against him. Nikki said his only wish was that Nagas unite. While indicating that the group led by him will remain as a separate entity like that of the NSCN (I-M) and WC, NNPGs- in the peace talks with the Government of India, Nikki said that there may be differences among various groups, but unless all three-- NSCN (IM), WC NNPGs and NSCN (K)- sit together, there cannot be any head way.

Opposition-less govt would be a fraud on people, says TNR DIMAPUR, SEP 5 (NPN): Claiming that governance and constitutional obligation of an elected government had nothing to do with the ongoing peace talks between Government of India and Naga political groups (NPGs) or the question of unity among NPGs, The Naga Rising (TNR) said the decision to form ‘Nagaland United Government’ by the NDPP-led PDA government along with opposition NPF in the name of unity and solution was hardly convincing.
In a statement, TNR said the fact that there was already a parliamentary panel on Naga issue represented by members from both the ruling and opposition parties made it even more bizarre. It said the PDA government deciding to abdicate its governance responsibility and NPF absolving itself from playing the role of a responsible opposition were driven by misplaced reasoning, adding that political solution, reconciliation or coming together of NPGs
should not be mixed up with the functioning of parliamentary democracy. TNR asked the chief minister and ruling alliance to instead focus on providing good governance to the State and fulfilling the mandate on which they have been elected – corruptionfree government with the slogan “change is coming”. If at all, TNR said the Parliamentary Panel on Naga issue, already represented by both the ruling and opposition parties, should come out with a
clear formulation/draft and timeline for NPGs to work together towards one solution. Mentioning that people of Nagaland could do without a “role model opposition-less government”, TNR said they would rather have the elected government and opposition perform their respective constitutional obligations. It quoted American writer Walter Lippmann, “…in a democracy, the opposition is not only tolerated as constitutional, but must be maintained because it is
indispensable.” It pointed out that in a representative democracy, people exercised their adult franchise to elect legislature, to which the real executive/ government, or the council of ministers, should be responsible. “Collective responsibility is, therefore, a basic feature of the constitution and it is for the Legislative Assembly to enforce the collective responsibility of the council of ministers to itself as provided under Art 164 (2). Office of a telecom service provider lockded by ZRSU.
DIMAPUR, SEP 5 (NPN): Zunheboto Range Students’ Union (ZRSU) has shut down offices of all telecom service providers (TSPs). This followed as part of the union’s next course of action after its 15-day ultimatum to TSPs to ensure stable network connectivity in Zunheboto ended and the authorities concerned failed to meet its demands. Earlier, ZRSU had made several appeals and
requests to the TSPs to improve their network in Zunheboto, but failed to get any positive response. As such, the union shut down all offices of the service providers in Zunheboto for an indefinite period. ZRSU further warned the telecom service providers that an “intensive and substantial” course of actions would be initiated against them if they fail to address its demand. K Y M C

GUWAHATI, SEP 5 (PTI): Two persons accused of different crimes were injured in police encounters in Assam’s Guwahati and Dhemaji when they “tried to escape from custody”, a senior officer said on Sunday. Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Gyanendra Pratap Singh said sleuths in Guwahati had to open fire on one accused in self-defence when he tried to flee custody. The person, who sustained a bullet injury on his leg, was recently arrested from Delhi for allegedly supplying cocaine in a rave party in Guwahati last month, he said in a tweet. Talking about the other case, Singh said a man accused of attacking a college girl, who later succumbed to her injuries, tried to snatch a police weapon in Dhemaji district on Saturday evening. He was injured in police firing, Singh added. Since May, at least 23 suspected militants and criminals were shot dead in police encounters in the state as they reportedly tried to snatch service weapons or attempted to escape from
custody, while 38 accused were injured along with some policemen. The rising number of shoot-outs has whipped up a political furore with the opposition alleging that the Assam Police has turned “trigger happy” under the Chief Minister Himanta
Biswa Sarma-led regime, which assumed charge on May 10. Unfazed by the criticism, Sarma had on July 15 said in the Assam Assembly that the state police has “full operational liberty” to fight against the criminals within the ambit of law.

Pressure groups and family members of Cherishterfield Thangkhiew, the founding general Secretary of the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), claimed that Thangkhiew was killed in a “fake encounter” in a pre-dawn raid by the Special Operation Team (SOT) of the Meghalaya police on August 13 at his residence in Mawlai. NEP to focus on four thrust areas, says Pema Khandu Assam flood situation improves, number of affected people comes down to 1.18 L
ITANAGAR, SEP 5 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Sunday said that under the New Education Policy (NEP), the government will focus on four thrust areas to shape future scope and dynamics of education scenario in the state. Speaking at a function to celebrate Teachers’ Day, Khandu said that the thrust areas include, Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), e-Governance and Digital Education and Vocational and Teachers’ Education. The chief minister claimed that the New Education Policy introduced by the Centre is one of the biggest reforms ever in the
education sector. He said the state government is all set to achieve the vision of 10 years as proposed in the policy for which two state task forces have been constituted and several rounds of consultations have already been held by them. “We have recently launched ‘Mission Shiksa’ with an aim to provide good quality education to the students in an improved educational environment and uplifting the morale of teachers. We have also declared 2021 as ‘Year of Education’ and will invest sufficiently through convergence to overhaul our education system,” Khandu said. Arunachal had only three primary schools at the time of Independence
Pema Khandu and now the state boasts of about 4000 schools, Khandu said. However, he lamented that the quality of education instead of growing has degraded in these years. “We as a state have certainly faltered somewhere. We grew from three primary schools to 4000 schools. The number of teachers also increased manifold but we are still struggling to improve
our quality of education. So many drawbacks and complaints still continue to haunt the system,” Khandu said. “On records we have a sufficient number of teachers but still so many schools across the state report shortage of teachers. This has to be resolved. Our Education department is working on it and soon transfer and posting will be digitally and transparently rationalized which will be available on the department’s web portal,” Khandu informed. He also said political interference or influence in transfer and posting, particularly in health and education will not be allowed. The chief minister expressed that at the start
certain reforms do hurt certain sections of people but, he claimed, in the long run results will be sweet and gave the example of State Staff Selection Board. “Earlier, job-for-vote culture was prevalent. To stop it, we established the Staff Selection Board. At the beginning it did hurt some people including few politicians, their supporters and people looking for government jobs in return for votes and cash. But today, the scenario is different. Everybody knows that to get a job you need to go through the Board exams. Today people are actually working hard and only eligible people are getting government jobs,” he explained.

Morigaon. Till Saturday, nearly 1.77 lakh people were hit by the deluge across 12 districts of the state. Four more persons have drowned, but the ASDMA said these were cases of “general drowning” and not included in the flood toll. There goes Spider-Man! Arunachal Chasma Bandar’ population rising in Tripura despite loss of habitat youngster casts web of cosplay ITANAGAR, SEP 5 (PTI): He dashes and jumps off terraces, flips and vaults on the streets wearing a cape, leaving people in absolute awe. Who is he? Arunachal’s own friendly, neighbourhood Spider-Man! Takam Todo, 22, has slowly but surely aced the cosplay of his favourite comic superhero - SpiderMan, imitating stunts of the caped crusader at will. A resident of Itanagar, Todo started parkouring, which involves running, jumping, swinging, vaulting and climbing, around 2014. “I sense action and opportunity everywhere. If there is a wall, it’s just a wall for others. But for us, we can land on it and jump from it,” he told PTI. Todo’s Spider-Man antics began two year ago
Takam Todo in Pune, where he was pursuing a diploma in civil engineering. He bought the costumes online and got into the act, posting a video of him vaulting over two motorcycles, on social media. Initially, the video garnered only around 500 views, but after the coronavirus lockdowns, “it suddenly got viral”, Todo said. Titled ‘Spider-Man Jumping in Pune’, it has over 25 million views so
far on YouTube, where he has over 77,000 subscribers. He also uploaded a new video of parkour moves a day before the teaser of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ released on August 24. Todo’s cosplay videos of the comic superhero are typically filled with stunts atop terraces and dancing moves, but he remains nonchalant about the dangers associated with the acts. “There are lots of deaths due to road accidents. Still, people ride vehicles,” he said. “We progress through training. We just go for the basics at first and slowly develop.” The young man claimed that despite his daredevil stunts, he was yet to suffer any serious injury. “It looks painful, but it’s not much of a pain for us,” Todo quipped.
AGARTALA, SEPT 5 (PTI): Only chosen few are born bespectacled and they happen to be the Phayre’s leaf monkey or the species popularly known in the country as `Chasma Bandar’ (bespectacled monkey). These shy, agile, deep forest dwellers are now threatened with extinction as humans are increasingly encroaching on their natural habitat. According to International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Phayre’s leaf monkey is listed as endangered and its population is estimated to have more than halved over the last three generations (36 years, given a monkey generation length of 12 years), due to a combination of habitat loss and hunting. In India, it is a schedule 1 species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The leaf monkey de-
rives its local name from the chalk-white patch around its black eyes, close to the bridge of its nose. The primates are general tree top dwellers and hardly descend even to drink water. They are named after Sir Arthur Purves Phayre, a British Indian Army officer who “discovered” the species. They prefer to collect water from dew and rain drenched leaves and survives on fruits, flowers and leaves. When surprised they sound a guttural alarm. The only other sound they make is a kind of squeal. Tripura’s Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary is known as the abode of the prized leaf monkey. The central zoo authority of India has deemed Sipahijala wildlife sanctuary as a National breeding centre for bespectacled monkey, State Wild Life Warden, Nirad Baran
File photo of a `Chasma Bandar’ (bespectacled monkey). Debnath told PTI. The monkey which is also the state animal is spotted in north eastern states of Tripura, parts of Assam and Mizoram, neighbouring Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, southwestern China, parts of Southeast Asia including Myanmar. “Even as the primate is dwindling in numbers elsewhere, their numbers are rising in Tripura. We have noticed about a two percent rise of the Phary’s
langur in Tripura. A recent study in Sepahijhala concluded that seven troops, comprising 100 individuals, were present in the sanctuary”, Debnath said. Interestingly, the monkey, which is folivore also has in recent years developed a habit of thriving on rubber leaves. Tripura has a large number of rubber plantations. “The areas under natural forest are shrinking gradually due to human encroachment and
the monkeys, which move in herds, often raid horticultural gardens and even kitchen gardens for jackfruits, drumsticks, carrots and other vegetables. They also changed their nature of eating due to habitat loss and developed the habit of eating rubber leaves and its twigs”, the official said. “The species is adapting to life in rubber plantations in Tripura. There is a high dependence on rubber leaves,” confirmed primatologist Joydeep Bose. In a study, Bose and Bhattacharjee (2004) reported that more than 75 per cent of the annual diet of the species in Tripura comes from rubber plants. The forest official said, “This primate can consume wide range of fruits and leaves and can digest easily and play an important role in the health of the forest and in seed dispersal,”

their special needs, interests and abilities,” he said during the virtual award ceremony. “The primary responsibility of combining the inherent talents of the students lies with the teachers. A good teacher is a personality-builder, a society-builder and a nationbuilder,” he added. Kovind congratulated all the teachers who received the award for their distinguished contributions. “Such teachers strengthen my belief that the future generation is safe in the hands of our wellqualified teachers. Teachers have a very important place in everyone’s life, people
remember their teachers lifelong. Teachers who nurture their students with affection and devotion always get respect from their students,” he said. The President urged teachers to inspire and enable their students to envision a golden future and acquire the aptitude to fulfil their aspirations. “It is the duty of teachers to inculcate interest in studies in their students. Sensitive teachers can shape the future of students through their behaviour, conduct and teaching. Noting the challenges posed by the pandemic, Kovind said for the last one-
and-a-half years, the whole world is going through a crisis caused by coronavirus. “In this situation, even when all schools and colleges were closed, teachers did not allow children’s education to stop. For this, teachers learned to use digital platforms in a very short time and continued the education process. “Some teachers have d eve l o p e d r e m a r k a b l e infrastructure in schools with their hard work and dedication. I appreciate such dedicated teachers and hope that the entire teaching community will keep on changing its teaching methods according to the changing circumstances,” he said. The President said that the National Education Policy (NEP), which was implemented last year, has set an ambitious objective of establishing India as a global knowledge superpower. “We have to provide such education to students that would be helpful in building a just society based on knowledge,” he said. The education system should be such that
students develop a sense of commitment towards the constitutional values ??and fundamental duties, it strengthens patriotic feelings among them and makes them aware of their role in the changing global scenario, he added. The National Awards to Teachers were first instituted in 1958 to recognise the excellence and commitment of teachers in shaping the minds as well as the future of the youth. From the mid-60s onwards, September 5 came to be the fixed date for the function on account of the birthday of Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, former president of India and an eminent educationist. The awards accord public recognition to meritorious teachers working in elementary and secondary schools. This year, online selfnomination process was followed by a three-tier selection process at district, state and national level. A documentary film on each of the 44 awardee teachers was also shown during the virtual award ceremony.

bearing the name Faizabad are not removed, Owaisi’s entry in Ayodhya would be barred and the public meeting at Rudauli will be disrupted.” One of the oldest plaintiffs in the Ayodhya title suit, Iqbal Ansari, too, has condemned Owaisi’s political foray into Ayodhya. “Muslims should be cautious about Owaisi, who should stick to Hyderabad and not play with the sentiments of lakhs of Muslims in Uttar Pradesh. I appeal to the people not to be influenced by his polarisation tactics,” he said. AIMIM district president Shahnawaz Siddiqui, meanwhile, said, “We are habituated to calling Faizabad by its old name. It takes time for the new name to sink in. This is a minor issue and should not be blown out of proportion.”
TN to organise 10,000 vaccine camps on September 12 CHENNAI, SEP 5 (IANS): Tamil Nadu is planning to organise 10,000 Covid vaccination camps on next Sunday to inoculate 20 lakh people on a single day, state Health minister Ma Subramanian said on Sunday. “We are conducting these camps, as directed by our Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, on September 12. A meeting to discuss the finer points would be held with the District Collectors, Joint Directors, and Deputy Directors of the Health Department in a day or two,” Subramanian told IANS. He said that he will be visiting the K a n y a k u m a r i , T i r u n e l v e l i , Te n k a s i , and Virudhanagar districts to check on the arrangements of these camps.
NEW DELHI, SEP 5 (IANS): After Panchjanya’s article attacking software company Infosys for hurting the country’s economic interest was published, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Sunday distanced itself from the comment made in it. In a social media post RSS’s Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh, Sunil Ambekar said that the article published by Panchjanya reflects the individual opinion of the author. “As an Indian company, Infosys has made seminal contributions to the progress of the country. There might be certain issues with a portal run by Infosys, but the article published by Panchjanya in this context only reflects individual opinion of the author,” Ambekar said. “Panchjanya is not a mouthpiece of the RSS and the said article or opinion expressed in it should not be linked with the RSS,” Ambekar added. In its cover story titled ‘Saakh Aur Aghaat’ the Panchjanya accused Infosys of helping ‘Tukde-tukde gang’, naxals and other anti-national forces. Pointing to regular incidents of glitches in IT portals developed by Infosys, resulting in trouble for tax payers and investors, the Panchjanya article said that such incidents brought down the trust of taxpayers in the Indian economy. The article called Infosys ‘naam bade aur darshan chhote’ (great cry and little wool). The Panchjanya article claimed that this was not the first time Infosys had done this to a government project. “First time mistake can be called a coincidence but if the same mistake happens repeatedly, it raises doubts. There are accusations that the Infosys management is deliberately trying to destabilise India’s economy,” the article said. The article also claimed that Infosys has been accused of helping ‘Naxals, leftists and tukde-tukde gangs’.
Sunil Ambedkar
“Infosys is accused of providing assistance to Naxals, Leftists and the Tukde Tukde Gang. The issue of Infosys directly or indirectly supporting divisive forces in the country has already
come out in the open,” the article said. The magazine article has alleged that “the direct and indirect support of Infosys has come to the fore for many disruptive activities going on in the country”, that it is behind certain propaganda websites, and groups engaged in spreading caste hatred are beneficiaries of its charity. “Shouldn’t the promoters of Infosys be asked what are the reasons behind its funding anti-national and anarchist organisations. Should a company with such a dubious record be allowed to participate in government tendering processes,” it had asked.

AYODHYA, SEP 5 (IANS): Saints and seers in Ayodhya are up in arms against AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi’s Ayodhya visit on September 7 after his party posters used ‘Faizabad’ instead of Ayodhya. Faizabad district was renamed as Ayodhya by the Yogi Adityanath government in 2018. Threatening to bar his entry in Ayodhya, the saints said that the ‘mischief ’ was deliberate and an attempt to polarize people on religious grounds. The seers also threatened to stop his rally being held under the aegis of ‘Shoshit Vanchit Samaj Sammelan’, if Faizabad was not dropped from posters. Owaisi is scheduled to address a public meeting at Rudauli, a Muslim-dominated c o n s t i t u e n c y, a b o u t 4 0 kilometres from the Ram Janmabhoomi on September 7. Mahant Raju Das of Hanuman Garhi said, “Why is Owaisi renaming Ayodhya as Faizabad? We condemn h i s c o m mu n a l i d e o l o g y and demand removal of the posters.” Mahant Paramhans Das of Tapasvi Chavni, said, “Owaisi’s anti-Hindu move is also an insult to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. NEW DELHI, SEP 5 (PTI): BJP leaders on Sunday cited a global survey, which ranks Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the leader with the highest approval rating, to assert that this shows popular support to his pro-people policies. The data by Morning Consult, which regularly tracks popularity ratings of a host of global leaders, has put Modi with 70 per cent approval on the top of a list which included US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. “The highest ranking for the country’s top leader Narendra Modi in the global approval rating is a matter of pride and honour for the country. This is a result of people’s blessings to his welfare policies for the masses,” BJP president J P Nadda said. The party’s chief spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Anil Baluni said India’s prestige has risen in an unprecedented manner under Modi. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, “Global leader with highest approval ratings, that’s our Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji with 70 per cent approval ratings. Congratulations.”

Asked about the Congress’ stand on alliances for the UP polls and if there was still a possibility of a tie-up with the SP and BSP, Lallu said, “The Congress’ stand on alliances is clear, we will forge alliances only with small parties. We will not even think about aligning again with big parties.” Pointing to the reaction of SP and BSP to a Congress booklet that talked about misrule under the nonCongress governments in the last 32 years, he said it is clear that “we will align with small parties” on the issues of the poor, farmers, youth and women’s security. “ We a r e m o v i n g forward as a strong opposition force and

NEW DELHI, SEP 5 (PTI): Virtually ruling out an alliance with the SP and BSP for the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, Congress’ state unit chief Ajay Kumar Lallu on Sunday said his party will forge alliances only with small parties and will “not even think about” joining hands with the big ones for the elections. He also said the gover nments of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) that have ruled Uttar Pradesh in the last 32 years, when Congress was not in power, failed to live up to the expectations of the people and the Congress was set for a comeback in the state. In an interview with PTI, Lallu said that in the eyes of the people of Uttar Pradesh, the Congress is the main challenger to the BJP in the polls next year and expressed confidence that the party would win the elections under the leadership of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and form the next government. The Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president said the party will fight the polls under the “supervision” of Priyanka

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXI NO. 272 DIMAPUR, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2021
Of Peace and Justice
F
or those in Nagaland who were old enough to remember the turbulent 50s, September 6, 1964 is a historic and memorable event after statehood on December 1,1963. It was on September 6,1964 that the first Naga Cease Fire came into effect. September 6 was also observed as ‘Peace Day’ throughout Nagaland to commemorate the first cease fire agreement signed between the Government of India with the undivided NNC that came through untiring efforts of the church amid untold sufferings of the people. After years of violence throughout the erstwhile Naga hills and Naga Hills Tuensang Area(NHTA) during the fifties, when villages were grouped and people placed behind barricades; the inhuman suffering of the people was indescribable . In order to save the innocent people from such tragedies which went unmentioned in the national media, Baptist Church leaders led by Rev. Longri Ao and Rev.Kenneth Kerhuo took up the dangerous challenge of initiating the church resolution adopted at the Wokha town convention from January 31 to February 2,1964 to for bringing peace between two warring sides- Indian armed forces and Naga nationalists. The church leaders then requested the government to provide services of freedom fighter Jayaprakash Narayan; chief minister of Assam Bimala Prasad Chaliha and Anglican churchman Rev. Michael Scott. The three worked to restore peace in the newly created state of Nagaland under the name of Nagaland Peace Mission. The NPM worked under very trying and often dangerous situations to bring about a cease fire so that negotiations could be held for as peaceful solution. Although, the Ceasefire came into effect on September 6, 1964, it was actually signed on 23 May 1964. The ceasefire facilitated hectic negotiations between the government of India under prime minister Indira Gandhi and the FGN delegation led by its ato kilonser Kughato Sukhai. One of the notable impacts of the cease fire was that there was wide jubilation among people across Nagaland as they were able to experience the fruits of peace after the creation of Nagaland as the 16th state under the union of India. The fruits of peace was fast-paced development and progress that made Nagaland state a model for small states. This phase of peace and progress was to continue through the decades till the mid 1980s despite the first split within NNC in 1969. Such a phase was possible because the then armed groups did not bother the civilians. Today, in contrast, cease fires had not prevented factional killings and given rise to gun culture. What September 6 also reminds Nagas is that peace should mean more than cease fires and signatures. Unless there is true agreement, beyond signatures, among people that differences can only be narrowed if there is a civility and non violence; peace will only be brittle and Nagas have experienced it too many times. Peace also followed by its natural ally, unity that can help build bridges over divisions and enlarge the process of understanding and towards a lasting and peaceful solution. It will serve well for Nagas to remember what the late Rev.Martin Luther King described about peace when he said: “ Peace is not merely the absence of war but the presence of justice, of law , of order- in short, of government.”
DailyDevotion Watching With Jesus Stay here and watch with Me. —Matthew 26:38 “Watch with Me.” Jesus was saying, in effect, “Watch with no private point of view at all, but watch solely and entirely with Me.” In the early stages of our Christian life, we do not watch withJesus, we watch for Him. We do not watch with Him through the revealed truth of the Bible even in the circumstances of our own lives. Our Lord is trying to introduce us to identification with Himself through a particular “Gethsemane” experience of our own. But we refuse to go, saying, “No, Lord, I can’t see the meaning of this, and besides, it’s very painful.” And how can we possibly watch with Someone who is so incomprehensible? How are we going to understand Jesus sufficiently to watch with Him in His Gethsemane, when we don’t even know why He is suffering? We don’t know how to watch with Him— we are only used to the idea of Jesus watching with us. The disciples loved Jesus Christ to the limit of their natural capacity, but they did not fully understand His purpose. In the Garden of Gethsemane they slept as a result of their own sorrow, and at the end of three years of the closest and most intimate relationship of their lives they “all… forsook Him and fled” (Matthew 26:56). “They were all filled with the Holy Spirit…” (Acts 2:4). “They” refers to the same people, but something wonderful has happened between these two events— our Lord’s death, resurrection, and ascension— and the disciples have now been invaded and “filled with the Holy Spirit.” Our Lord had said, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…” (Acts 1:8). This meant that they learned to watch with Him the rest of their lives.

CEA stokes hope amid Asian gloom
fter a long time the Chief Economic Advisor Surbramanian Krishnamurthy boost the confidence of the nation with his assertion that the Indian economy is poised to grow as macro-economic fundamentals are strong, reassures Chief Economic Advisor Krishnamurthy Subramanian. The CEA is categorical that the country has the capacity to march on despite withdrawal of stimulus globally. He expects a double-digit growth though it would be on minus 23.9 percent growth of 2020-21. It is reassuring for a nation that has stagnated for almost 18 months on a decelerated growth during the previous two years. At this stage any positive growth boosts the confidence of the businesses and creates a favourable political atmosphere. The Economic Survey (ES) estimated a growth of 11 percent and the budget 10.5 percent. UN ESCAP predicts a troubled ‘K’ shape recovery. The latest RBI Monetary Policy puts it at 9.5 percent. And the first quarter recovery is stated to be 21.4 percent, an improvement over the forecast made in June over
the 18.5 percent. The CEA, however, is modest and says that the growth will be higher than pre-covid19 level and possibly “the budget and ES predictions should be achieved”. The nation hopes that the nation comes out of a negative psyche and sprints on. The first sign has come with the eight core sector continued expansion of 9.4 percent. The CEA says that he agrees with the April-June quarter growth rate. He says there is a base effect. At the same time, it has happened during a much more intense second wave. There is across the board improvement in a lot of high frequency indicators. The recovery is “V” shaped, he says and would continue to be so. He revels on the 49.6 percent year-on-year growth of the manufacturing sector compared with a 36 percent contraction last year. The construction grew 68.3 percent. even farm sector did better in Aril-June with 4percent growth and against 3.5 percent posted earlier. What Subramanian indicates that the nation has come out of a gloomy period and now is poised
grow positively. He does not disagree with some hiccups but the 9.4 percent recovery of coal, crude oil, natural gas, petroleum & refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity is far better than contraction 7.6 percent in June 2020. The core sector has maintained the growth for the fifth consecutive month. There are positive indicators but still a lot needs to be done as overall there is a financial crunch and the budget deficit at the end of July was at Rs 3.2 lakh Shivaji crore – 21.3 percent of the full year target. It is stated to be modest as as the figure a year ago was Rs 8.2 lakh crore and pre-covid level of 5.5 lakh crore. But there are other problems. The GST realization and other revenue realizations are lower. The economy has not yet come back to health so that revenue realizations, key to further recovery, grow at healthy pace. Personal citizen economy is still not in a happy state with loss of jobs, wages and salary cuts. This also affects purchasing capacity, a necessity for increasing market activities. Besides, repeated and
sporadic surge of covid19 fears often put activities at bay. The private equity and venture capital (PEVC) deals have tapered in early August despite a bullish stock market crossing 57000 points at the sensex. It has raised questions on the nature and quality of investments. Total PE-VC deals were 112 against 126 in July. Despite optimism, the investors are yet shy of entering into deals as the investors have still problems of cash f l o w. I n Sarkar vestments flows are dependent on how the line-up IPOs performed. The liquidity has not hit its peak yet. There are more offers for sale and the buyers are not revving up to the offers. Another not so good indicator is the diesel sales. It has recorded the sharpest fall in monthly sales since May. It is ascribed to monsoon conditions having hit demand from the farm, trucking and construction sectors majorly. August data show minor gains in sales over 2020 but it remains 9.7 percent less than 2019. Even LPG sales fell marginally – 1.7 percent less than in July 2019 and
2.4 percent less than August 2019. This shows that at the household level the recovery is not bright. All eyes are fixed on the ensuing festival season when overall activities and demand are expected. So amid this scenario 4 percent dip in GST is not surprising. The July collections were Rs 1.16 lakh crore. It dipped to Rs 1.12 lakh crore in August. July collections were 30 percent higher than last year and 14 percent more that in 2019. On an average, except in June, the collections were over Rs 1 lakh crore a month. The compensation formula for the states will be decided on September 17, when the GST Council would meet in Lucknow. Still experts are cautious on the recovery path indicated by the moderation in the August purchasing managers’ index (PMI). Overall unless the individual financial status improves, the demand would continue to vascillate. The UPI transaction value officially is showing improvement but during June to August it has decelerated. The growth rate of transaction value also moderated. There are also apprehensions that even the
actual transactions show are not real in many cases. Overall manufacturing activities are hit by PMI. It hovers around 52.3 in August. The 50 point mark the separates the contraction from expansion. It is an indicator that not everything is that glorious as is made it out to be. Global and Asian trends are yet not positive. Japan government offered a bleaker view of the economy in August. It says the downside risk is heightening – it means overall growth is falling though for August. Overall Asian economy sees the corporate profits declining, falling sales of cars in China and Toyota cutting September production. Factory activity in the Asia Pacific contracted sharply in July. There are signals of slowing down in southeast Asia and Pacific. Asia’s largest firms are likely to post profit decline of 6.2 percent, according to a calculation of Refinitiv Elkon. Amid such scenario, the CEA’s statement keeps hopes alive for Indian economy. The market would like to see Subramanian’s prediction coming true despite all odds. Would it happen?

Letter to Rising People’s Party (RPP) on suspension of regular appointments to lift more back door entry
irst of all, greeting you all in the name of young political party and let’s go straight to the point. 1. If Rising People’s Party (RPP) is genuinely fighting for unemployment problems, backdoor appointments and hard working public aspirants, why should they even file PIL to suspend appointment for those posts which come under the preview of NPSC? If they are actually standing for the benefits of hardworking aspirants, they should press hard on government to lift ban of appointment to the services instead of suspending it. As we are all aware that the state government totally banned fresh appointment and halted open recruitment for almost two years and it brought so many untold hardships to the genuine aspirants and most importantly, for those aspirants who are on the verge of overage. After 2 years, the state government finally ordered to partially lift appointment with effect from July/2021. Perhaps, it was good news for those genuine aspirants who successfully cleared NPSC-2019, various departmental exams and also for those aspirants who have been waiting to get job in Nagaland. However, it was just the opposite because the main motive of RPP is to discourage open recruitment and encourage more backdoor entry thereby filed PIL to delay and suspend appointment even for open recruitment. As we know, when the appointment to the public services is halted, it will simply defeat equal opportunity in employment as enshrined in Article 16. The Supreme Court order stated that “as the government offices can’t function with skeletal and unsupported staff at all levels and keeping in view of availability of vacancies, importance of duty, in the interest of public services and in view of
administrative exigencies, the government has right to engage any qualified/ experienced profession for certain job as stop gap arrangement till such time regular recruit is made available “. I don’t know how this stop gap arrangement is made in Nagaland state but it’s the duty of RPP to know as they’re well learnt but keeping in mind that that this court order of stop gap arrangement will always encourage political set up and bureaucracy to violate the soul of Article 14 & 16 by trampling over the height of other eligible and more meritorious persons through the backdoor entry. Even though the service of those backdoor appointees will never be regularised as in the case of Supreme Court Judgement case of Umadevi vs Karnataka State, they will extend their service till regular recruit is joined. So in a nutshell, by suspending appointment through direct recruitment, RPP is indirectly encouraging more backdoor entry and also extensions service for those backdoor appointees. 2. On the issue of Nagaland State Staff Selection Board (NSSB), the state government has taken so many commendable steps on their part to make it operational at the earliest. As we know the state government already implemented NSSB recruitment rules with effect from July/2020 and in this regard, Applications for the post of chairman, members, ministerial and supporting staff were invited through open advertisement by recruitment/ deputation. However, the same was put on hold due to ENSF exorbitant demands for the post of Chairman & Members on rotational basis amongst the tribes of Nagaland and also 45% reservation for six tribes of Eastern Nagaland. In this connection, the government held sev-
eral rounds of meetings with students and tribal bodies from all over Nagaland but it didn’t reach to an amicable agreement so the government constituted a special committee to review the demands and reservation of ENSF. The controversy of ENSF exorbitant demands may or may not be resolved even within a year or decade but the government has every rights to keep NSSB in abeyance till further orders to prevent any utter chaos and untoward incident in the larger interest of public. As the entire problem on the delay in setting up NSSB lies within the general public, the government has nothing to be blamed. The unsolved problem lies within the public, students bodies and tribals bodies for their involvement on unreasonable and unconstitutional demands, which will eventually lead to resort violence, agitation, damage public property and disturb peaceful environment. S o, h ow c a n we blame government when the entire problem lies within the public? Why blame government for delay in setting up NSSB when public are so uncooperative? How can we expect NSSB to function without chairman, members, supporting staff, etc? If RPP is so concerned about NSSB to become operational at the earliest, they should first consult all the NGOs, Groups, Communities, Students and Students bodies from all over Nagaland on the controversy of ENSF exorbitant demands before approaching state governments. PSAN, ACAUT and NSF have come this far to resolve these problems so never try to outsmart without knowing the ground reality and details on the subject matters (being an infant political party) before taking such extreme step or else, you will always end up being a clown.
3. In direction of supreme court and Departmental of Personnel & Training’s circular, it’s absolutely necessary for the central/state government to access vacancies and fill out vacant posts at all levels so that every year vacancies that may occur are filled. For this pur pose, timely steps are required to be taken for assessment vacancies, issue of advertisement, conducting of examinations and interviews, declaration of finals results and issue of appointment orders. Further, the UPSC recruitment rules clearly stated that any post which doesn’t come under the preview of UPSC will be directly recruited by concerned department, SSC or any subordinate services. Likewise the posts which don’t come under the preview of NPSC will go to concerned department for recruitment till NSSB is made functional. Keeping in view of the supreme court judgement which clearly stated “ Departmental recruitment on appointment to any post under the central/state government is constitutional valid, if it is made after a proper advertisement and inviting applications from all eligible candidates and holding of selection by a body of recruitment board whose members are fair and impartial through a written examination/ interview for judging the inter se merit of candidates who have made in response to the advertisement made. And every recruitment board should maintain minute details of records throughout the entire recruitment process for fair and transparency in selection. However, any allegation made without any sufficient proof and evidence will not be entertained at any stage of recruitment process “. Therefore, till such time NSSB is made functional, RPP should urge government to speedily fill
up vacancies through open recruitment, inter se merit, fair and transparent means by preventing backdoor entry. If RPP is suspicious about malpractices in departmental recruitment, they have every right to collect data of all the candidates during the entire stage of recruitment process, which is allowed by supreme court for fair and transparency in recruitment. RPP should not simply keep suspending departmental recruitment as clearly stated in point (2) as it will only hamper the career of those aspirants who are on the verge of overage. Keeping in mind that even though RPP is the largest political party in Nagaland, they don’t have any authority to grant age relaxation to those candidates who become overage even by just 1 day. They should just go ahead with government decision on departmental recruitment till such time NSSB is made functional by strictly keeping vigilant during the entire process of recruitment. If there’s any suspicious during the recruitment process for RPP, the recent supreme court judgment of ‘Tainted SSC examination of 2017’ and ‘Cash for jobs scam’ of Assam state will be helpful. Lastly, It’s true that the allegations made by any political party is full of fake and baseless until it’s proven in the court of laws with sufficient fact and evidence. Most of them will simply go into conclusion without knowing any subject topic and civil servants will always
end up finding the introduction throughout the century. That’s the reason even the most brilliant IAS and UPSCs successful candidates are suffering from those political parties on the issue of “To be or not To be” 4. Lastly, NPSC (Civil services) has been lapsed for almost 2 years, Combined educational services is under process. Combined Technical Services will be held shortly in this month. Even recruitment for the post of Stenographer is already advertised. Therefore, RPP should urge NPSC to notify NPSC (civil services) advertisement without further delay and conduct all the notified advertisements under NPSC and fill up vacancies at the earliest instead of suspending appointment. Or else, RPP will end up paying heavy costs to those successful NPSC -2019 and departmental exams whose appointment get delayed. Because there’s no merit in RPP’s PIL as clearly stated above in brief. 5. Lastly, even if NSSB is formed, the entire credit will always go to PSAN so I don’t want the young political party (RPP) to be excited. (RPP), being the youngest political party, has so many homeworks to be done, they shouldn’t simply jump into conclusion. They have so many things to be done and fulfilled. Otherwise, the party will simply turn into Fooling People’s Party (FPP). Ghunavi G Kinnimi Sumi, Email: ghuna77kinny@ gmail.com

BJP terms ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ ‘election meeting’
The BJP on Sunday termed the ‘Kisan mahapanchayat’ organised in Muzaffarnagar an “election meeting” and accused its organisers of indulging in politics with Thousands of farmers from Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states gathered at Muzaffarnagar on Sunday for the ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat organised by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) to protest the Centre’s controversial farm laws. The BJP’s ‘Kisan Morcha’ head and MP Rajkumar Chahar claimed in a statement that it is politics and not concerns for farmers which have been on the agenda of those behind the ‘mahapanchayat’.

MUZAFFARNAGAR, S E P 5 ( AG E N C I E S ) : Farmers protesting against the Centre’s farm laws will “campaign in the name of the Prime Minister” because that’s what the BJP does too, farmer leader Rakesh Tikait said in a tongue-in-cheek message today, making it clear that the nature of their “publicity” will be very different, reports NDTV. “We are giving publicity to the PM only,” Tikait told NDTV in an exclusive interview today. Then he went on to add: “He (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) is selling everything. We will tell people what all is being sold off. There will be publicity of the PM. Electricity, water, etc are being sold off. Is it wrong to tell people these things?” The farmers have declared that they will campaign against the BJP in next year’s state elections in Uttar Pradesh. They even dubbed today’s megameeting in Muzaffarnagar “Mission Uttar PradeshUttarakhand”, indicating

PATNA, SEP 5 (PTI): An MLA of the ruling JD(U) in Bihar, who hit the headlines for travelling by a New Delhi-bound train in undergarments and quarrelling with co-passengers when they took umbrage, has been booked under various sections of the IPC besides the SC/ST Act, officials said here on Sunday. They said the FIR was lodged on Saturday at the GRP police station in Ara, based on a complaint lodged against the MLA Gopal Mandal. The complainant, Prahlad Paswan, had recorded his statement at GRP New Delhi on Friday soon after the train reached its destination.
He alleged that he was traveling in the same compartment of Tejas Express as the legislator and had expressed his discomfort when he saw Mandal going towards the toilet in his vest and underpants. TMC’s campaign in the seat in south Kolkata is already underway with the Election Commission announcing the bypoll on Saturday, following a request from the state government to avoid a constitutional crisis. Banerjee, who lost the election in Nandigram, has to win this by-poll to retain her chief minister’s post. The BJP, Congress, and CPI(M)-led Left Front are yet to announce their candidates for the bypoll. The bypoll will be held on September 30 along with the elections to two seats in the Murshidabad district

The ministry said over 4.37 crore balance and unutilised COVID-19 vaccine doses are still available with the states and UTs to be administered. Emphasising on building moral character in students, he appealed to the teachers to also nurture the talent of their students and help them realise their true potential. Sukhalu reminded the teachers that their words and actions both insideand outside classrooms influenced future citizens of the country and hence urged them to be mindful of what they utter and do. Observing that society was becoming more inclusive, he remarked that children with disabilities and special needs, who would not have dreamed of education even 10 years ago, were now attending schools. He urged the teachers to embrace such changes, as an inclusive education system would create an inclusive society. In her introductory note, school education special secretaryKevileno Angami said without teachers there would be no nation builders. Hence, she pointed out that the teachers were described as backbone of society. Congratulating the awardees, Angami stressed that not only academic teachings, but even ethical and moral values were equally important and urged the teachers to focus on them. She appealed to them to embrace the challenges, keep themselves updated and continuously engage with the students. Northern Alliance claims 1,000 terrorists trapped KABUL, SEP 5 (AGENCIES): The Taliban has been wiped from the Pajshir Valley and at least 1,000 terrorists have been trapped due to roadblocks, the Northern Alliance claimed on Sunday. According to Northern Alliance spokesperson Fahim Dashti, at least a thousand Taliban, were trapped due to the obstruction of the return route and exit during their invasion attempt of Panjshir. Several of these terrorists have also been captured with the help of the resistance forces while fleeing and retreating from Panjshir. The Northern Alliance
Forces has also revealed that several of these captives were ‘foreigners’ hinting at the possibility of them being Pakistan-based operatives. Just days ago, Pakistan’s active involvement in the fall of Afghanistan was exposed after ID cards of a Pakistani terrorist was shared by the Northern Alliance. The document being found on the outskirts of Panjshir Valley clearly suggested how Pakistani forces continue to extend cooperation with the Taliban to capture Panjshir. “From the filth of existence (Taliban) was completely cleaned. The news of 1,000 Taliban terrorists being trapped comes after the Northern Alliance led by forces of Ahmad Massoud and Amrullah Saleh blew up a mountain in the Danah area in a bid to prevent the infiltration. Following the blast, the terrorists of the Taliban were trapped in the Dashte-Rivet area, and the resistance forces claimed to have killed 200 of them. They further claimed to have seized the defence equipment left behind by them, including 1,870 humvees. Taking to his official Twitter handle, an Afghan politician from Panjshir, Saleh Registani communicated a message from the Afghan commander in Pashto,
Pakistani forces are aiding the Taliban in their fight against the last remaining foothold of opposition Panjshir Valley, sources close to the resistance headquarters have told CNN-News18. Pakistan is providing air support to Taliban fighters in Panjshir, the sources said, adding that some Special Forces have been airdropped to fight the Resistance. The sources said all major supplies and roads have been blocked by the militant group. Both sides - Taliban and Panjshir resistance - have sustained major casualties in the ongoing operations, they added. Yesterday, ISI Chief Hameed Faiz had extended his support to the Taliban, in a visit to Kabul. Earlier in the day, ‘acting’ President Amrullah Salleh had written to the United Nations, asking national and international aid agencies to immediately mobilise their resources to end the “war crimes” committed by the hardliners. On enhancing the bilateral trade ties, Jaishankar said he met five chief executive officers of “very important” businesses, the key businesses who are in India, who can make a big difference, companies like Grundfos, Vestss, Maersk, Haldor, Topsoe and CIP as well as the major chambers who are concerned with business which includes DIDE, Danish shipping and Agriculture and Food Council. “We have 200 Danish companies operating in India. We have a growing number of Indian companies today here. We also discussed how apart from our own bilateral cooperation, how we could carry forward, our larger trade investment agreements with the European Union and which we have, I believe have Denmark’s support.
13 police killed in Taliban suicide bomber blows himself up in Pak; 4 killed Nepal govt warns citizens against any suspected IS attack action that may hurt friendly nations in northern Iraq KATHMANDU, SEP 5 (PTI): The Nepal government on Sunday warned its citizens against carrying out any “reprehensible and disgraceful” actions that may hurt the dignity of the friendly nations after some people burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during protests in the country. In a statement, Nepal’s Home Ministry said that in the past few days, “the activities of chanting slogans, holding demonstrations and protest and burning effigies to tarnish the image of the neighbouring friendly nation’s Prime Minister has caught” its attention. The home ministry statement, however, did not identify the leader. But it expressed objection towards such “reprehensible and disgraceful” actions. The strong statement came after some students and youth organisations belonging to both the ruling alliance and the Opposition burnt effigies of Prime Min-
Sher Bahadur Deuba
ister Modi during protests over the death of a Nepalese youth when he was crossing the Mahakali river near the border with India in July. “ T h e G ove r n m e n t of Nepal wishes to have a friendly relationship with all friendly nations and is determined not to let any activities that may harm the national interest. We request everyone not to carry out any action that may hurt the dignity and respect of the friendly nations,” the statement said. Nepal has a long tradition of solving the dispute with the neighbouring nation through diplomatic
channels and mutual dialogue, the statement said. “In future as well, diplomatic initiative and mutual discourse will be utilised while solving any dispute,” it said. The Home Ministry will take action to control the activities targeted against the friendly neighbouring nation and will punish those who involve themselves in such unlawful activities, it warned. Jaya Singh Dhami, 33, of Byas rural municipality in Darchula district, is stated to have jumped into the river from the carriage of the tuin (a makeshift ropeway with a box attached for seating) he was clinging to after he saw an approaching patrol of the India-Nepal border guarding force Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Officials in India said the man was crossing over to the Indian side “illegally” using the tuin and was coming from Darchula in Nepal to Gasku in Dharchula in Uttarakhand’’s Pithoragarh district.
BAGHDAD, SEP 5 (AP): Gunmen opened fire at a federal police checkpoint in rural northern Iraq, sparking clashes that killed 13 police, a security official said Sunday. He blamed the attack on Islamic State militants. The attack late Saturday on the checkpoint in Satiha village in Kirkuk province also wounded five police. The security official said the clashes with the militants lasted for nearly an hour. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters. The militant group did not immediately claim responsibility for the attack. But northern Iraq has been a hotspot for IS activity since its territorial defeat in 2017 by Iraqi security forces with assistance from the US-led coalition. Iraqi forces routinely carry out anti-IS operations in the rugged mountainous northern region and the deserts of western Iraq where they are known to be holed up.
KARACHI, SEP 5 (PTI): A suicide bomber of the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan blew himself up in the country’s restive Balochistan province on Sunday, killing at least four security personnel and injuring 20 people, a top police official said. The attack targeted a Frontier Corps (FC) check post on the Mastung road in Quetta, the provincial capital, Deputy Inspector General of Quetta police Azhar Akram said. Akram told reporters that an initial investigations suggested that the suicide bomber drove an explosives laden motorcycle into a vehicle carrying Frontier Corps. “The bomb disposal squad has estimated that the motorcycle was laden with six kilogrammes of explosives,” he said. Akram confirmed that four people were killed in the blast while 20 others, 18 soldiers and 2 bystanders, were injured in the attack. “Condition of some of the injured is critical and

the casualties could rise,” he said. According to the Counter-Terrorism Department of Balochistan, the blast was a “suicide attack” and was carried out near the Sona Khan check post. The banned Tehreeke-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for
the attack, sending a grim signal that the change of government in Kabul might not end the woes of Pakistan as the country looks towards the Taliban to rein in the TTP rebels who are hiding in Afghanistan. According to security forces, the vehicle targeted in the attack was providing
security to vegetable sellers belonging to the Hazara community of the province. Condemning the attack, Prime Minister Imran Khan took to Twitter to offer condolences to the families of those killed. “Condemn the TTP suicide attack on FC checkpost, Mastung road, Quetta.
China seeks common stand with Iran on Afghanistan under Taliban Jeans, sportswear not parliamentary dress code, Speaker Hoyle warns UK MPs BEIJING, SEP 5 (PTI): A wary China is seeking to strike a common position with Afghanistan’s key neighbour Iran to firm up its growing role in the war-torn country as it waits for the Taliban to form an “open and inclusive” government that makes a “clean break” from all terrorist groups. China is already coordinating its evolving policy on Afghanistan with its “all-weather ally” Pakistan and Russia which also share borders with Afghanistan. Beijing, which has kept its Embassy open in Kabul along with Pakistan and Russia, is awaiting the formation of a government by the Taliban to decide on recognising it amidst firm indications by the US, the UK and other western countries that they will not be in a hurry to endorse the new government. China is also keeping a close watch on the Panjshir Valley fighting between the Taliban and the militias of Ahmad Massoud-led National Resistance Front (NRF) which has reportedly delayed the formation of the new government in

Afghanistan. On Saturday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a telephonic conversation with his Iranian counterpart Hossein AmirAbdollahian. Iran, which is struggling under the US sanctions over its nuclear policy, has warmed up to China in recent years with Beijing steadily expanding its investments in the oil-rich nation which shares its borders with Pakistan. In his talks with AmirAbdollahian, Wang said China has noted that the Taliban might announce the
formation of a new government in the coming days. He hoped that the “the new government will be open and inclusive, make a clean break with terrorist organisations, and establish and develop good relations with other countries, especially neighbouring countries”, according to a press release issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. “As common neighbours of Afghanistan, China and Iran need to strengthen communication and coordination to play a constructive role in achieving a smooth transition and peaceful re-
construction of Afghanistan,” he said. Wang has also lashed out at the US, saying that “the claim of the United States that the withdrawal from Afghanistan allows it to shift its focus to China and Russia not only serves as an excuse for its own failure, but also reveals the nature of its pushing for power politics in the world”. If the US is unable to learn due lessons, it is bound to make mistakes more serious than those in Afghanistan, Wang warned. Amir-Abdollahian said that the root cause of the chaos in Afghanistan is the irresponsibility of the US. “Iran also holds that Afghanistan should establish a broad and inclusive government reflecting the interests of all ethnic groups in the country,” the press release quoted him as saying. “The Iranian side calls on the international community to spare no effort to provide humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan and prevent any turmoil in Afghanistan from triggering a wave of refugees,” he said, adding that “Iran is ready
to strengthen coordination with China to help Afghanistan get out of difficulties at an early date”. S i n c e t h e Ta l i b a n seized power in Afghanistan, China has been vocal in expressing its concern over the Uygur militants of the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) fighting for the independence of Xinjiang, regrouping in Afghanistan under the rule of the Afghan militant group as the volatile province shares a narrow border with the warravaged country. Beijing has already extracted a firm commitment from a Taliban delegation headed by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar during a visit to China in July that they will not permit the ETIM to operate from its soil. China, at the same time, is eyeing the extension of its USD 60 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor to Afghanistan besides exploiting the mineral-rich mines there. The Taliban has already said that China has a big role to play in Afghanistan in the reconstruction of the war-raved country.
LONDON, SEP 5 (PTI): Britain’s members of Parliament will return to the House of Commons on Monday at the end of their summer recess and have been issued a warning note by the Speaker to dress appropriately in “business attire”. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Commons Speaker, has updated the “Rules of behaviour and courtesies in the House of Commons” to address any laxity that may have set in during the COVID-19 lockdown when rules were relaxed to allow MPs to be able to connect virtually with the chamber. The new upgraded Commons guidance states that MPs must remember how they dress, “should demonstrate respect for your constituents, for the House and for the institution of Parliament in the life of the nation”. “Members are expected to wear business attire in and around the Chamber,” read the new rules. “Jeans, chinos, sportswear or any other casual trousers are not appropriate. T-shirts
Lindsay Hoyle
and sleeveless tops are not business attire. Smart/business shoes are expected to be worn. Casual shoes and trainers are not appropriate. Men are encouraged to wear a tie, and jackets must be worn,” it notes. “It is a privilege to serve as a Member of Parliament and your dress, language and conduct should reflect this,” it adds. The new rules represent a toughening of the advice from Hoyle’s predecessor John Bercow, who was known for a more relaxed approach and believed there was “no exact dress code”
for MPs. It follows a few instances where Hoyle has intervened to point out an MP’s choice of attire, including former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt being told he was not dressed smartly enough during a Commons debate on COVID-19 back in December 2020. Hoyle has also moved to clamp down on rowdiness in the Commons and the new rules state that “singing and chanting are not permitted in the chamber” and that “clapping is also not allowed as it eats into the time available for debate”.

Worst Foods for Your Eyes
About 250 million people around the world have mild to serious vision loss. Did you know that the health of your eyes is directly connected to the health of your heart and blood vessels? What you eat and drink can have a lasting impact on both your cardiovascular health and your vision.
Bread and Pasta
Researchers have linked simple carbohydrates, like those found in white bread and pasta, with a higher chance of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of vision loss for older adults. The reason: Your body digests this type of carb quickly. This causes a spike in blood sugar. To prevent this, health experts suggest that you swap white bread and pasta for wholegrain versions.
Processed Meats
Hot dogs, bacon, and deli meats are loaded with sodium. This salt spike can eventually lead to high blood pressure (hypertension). In your eyes, this may cause: • Hypertensive retinopathy, blood vessel damage that causes blurred vision or vision loss • Choroidopathy, a buildup of fluid beneath the retina • Neuropathy, a blockage of blood flow that kills nerves and causes vision loss Try to limit your sodium to 2,300 milligrams or less a day.
Fried Foods
Deep-fried foods cooked in trans fats raise your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels and could lead to heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. They also create molecules called free radicals that can damage and kill cells. This all connects to eye disease -- AMD and diabetic retinopathy. Fight back against free radicals by eating fruits and veggies full of vitamin C like citrus fruits, tomatoes, and red bell peppers.
Cooking Oils
A landmark study 30 years ago linked too much linoleic acid, a type of unsaturated fat, with a higher chance of AMD. You can find it in these cooking oils: • Safflower • Sunflower • Corn • Soybean • Sesame Health experts suggest cooking oils with less than 4 grams of saturated fat per tablespoon. Stay away from ones with hydrogenated oils and trans fats.
Margarine
It’s made with vegetable oils, so it has unsaturated “good” fats. All things considered, it may be better for you than butter. But some margarine also has trans fat, which raises your cholesterol levels and the chance of heart disease and eye problems. The more solid the margarine, the more trans fat it has. Instead of a stick, use the spread or liquid kind. You can also look for brands with 0 grams of trans fat on the label.
Ready-to-Eat Foods
Prepackaged foods -- things like soup, tomato sauce, and canned goods -- often have high amounts of sodium, up to 75% of the suggested amount. Eating less of these foods can lower your chance of high blood pressure and related eye problems. When you shop, look for “low sodium” or “no salt added” versions of your favorite foods. Add your own spices and herbs for a natural flavor boost.
Sugary Drinks
Soda, sports and energy drinks, lemonade, and other sweetened drinks are full of sugar -- sometimes 7 to 10 teaspoons. They’re also the number one source of calories and added sugar in the U.S. diet. All that sugar ups your odds of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. This can lead to related eye conditions like diabetic retinopathy and AMD. Water is your best bet for a healthy drink.

Fish and Shellfish
Most of us have no reason to worry about the mercury in fish and shellfish in moderation. But at high levels and for certain groups of people, it can cause serious health problems, including eye damage. Health experts say pregnant women, those who are nursing or may become pregnant, and children should stick with 8-12 ounces of fish and shellfish each week.

paceX, run by tech billionaire Elon Musk-run, is all set to launch to orbit its first all-civilian mission ‘Inspiration4 on September 15. “#Inspiration4 and @SpaceX have completed our flight readiness review and remain on track for launch!” the Inspiration4 mission team said in a tweet. Early this year i n Fe b r u a r y, S p a c e X announced the charitydriven mission named Inspiration4, which will be commanded by tech entrepreneur Jared Isaacman and will have three others. They will orbit the planet aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule every 90 minutes along a customised flight path. Upon conclusion of the three-day journey, Dragon w i l l r e - e n t e r E a r t h ’s atmosphere for a soft water landing off the coast of Florida. The 37-year-old Isaacman is founder and CEO of integrated payment processing company Shift4 Payments and a trained pilot. Billionaire Issacman purchased the flight as part of an effort to raise millions for St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He has given St. Jude two seats on the Inspiration4 mission and has committed to give $100 million to St. Jude. He is joined by Haley Arceneaux, Sian Proctor and Chris Sembroski, Space.com reported. Arceneaux, a childhood bone cancer sur vivor and St. Jude
physician’s assistant, was chosen to represent the charity, while Proctor and Sembroski were selected as part of a global contest for a trip on the flight. Inspiration4 will blast off from NASA’s Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on September 15. However, the exact liftoff time will be determined just a few days before launch, the report said. Since the Dragon will not visit the International Space Station, unlike previous Crew Dragon missions, its docking port was removed and replaced with a dome window. The window, inspired by the Cupola on the International Space Station, will provide the crew with incredible views of Earth, according to the Inspiration4 team. Issacman, Arceneaux, Proctor and Sembrowski are set to arrive at Kennedy Space Center on September 9, ahead of their planned launch, the report said. The Inspiration4 mission marks SpaceX’s latest private astronaut mission. The company’s Ax-1 mission, also planned for the end of 2021, hosts a crew of four private astronauts paying $55 million each for an eightday trip to the ISS. In 2018, Musk also a n n o u n c e d Ja p a n e s e b i l l i o n a i r e Yu s a k u Maezawa will hitch a ride around the moon on SpaceX’s new rocket system Starship, which is under development. Caffeine
Alcohol
While not a food, alcohol is something you put into your body that experts link to eye disease. Drinking too much alcohol can lead to cataracts at an earlier age, a common condition that causes a cloudy area in your eye lens.
The caffeine in your morning cup of coffee or tea may raise the pressure inside your eye, or intraocular pressure (IOP). Studies show this pressure goes up in people with glaucoma or ocular hypertension (OHT) who’ve had caffeine. IOP that’s too high can cause vision loss and blindness. Whitney Seltman, OD

US Open: Djokovic lets emotions show; Barty loses Aries Rifle and Pistol Shooting Academy
Novak Djokovic
a man in more than a halfcentury, Djokovic moved into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the 14th consecutive appearance, coming back to beat Kei Nishikori 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. “I don’t plan to have those kind of emotional moments on the court, whether good or bad. It just happens,” Djokovic said. “In the heat of the battle, when you feel like the moment is very important ... you just want to get those things out of yourself, out of your system — try to, I guess, ride on that energy wave that you create, whether it’s with yourself, whether it’s with the crowd.” So the No. 1-seeded Djokovic managed to avoid
Ash Barty
the rash of upsets that have hit the tournament, but the top-seeded woman, Ash Barty, did not. A day after defending champion Naomi Osaka and two of the top five men, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev were beaten, Barty blew a big lead in the final set and lost to 43rd-ranked Shelby Rogers of the U.S. 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (5) on Saturday night. Rogers was a quarterfinalist in New York a year ago, while Barty owns titles from the French Open in 2019 and Wimbledon this July but never has been past the fourth round at Flushing Meadows. Coming into this match, Barty was 5-0 against Rogers and then went up two breaks at 5-2 in the
third set. Djokovic, a 34-year-old from Serbia, is now 24-0 in the sport’s four most important events this season, having won the Australian Open in February, the French Open in June and Wimbledon in July. The last man to go 4 for 4 at the majors was Rod Laver in 1969; Steffi Graf was the last woman, in 1988. Win four more matches next week, and Djokovic also would earn his 21st career Slam trophy, breaking the men’s mark he currently shares with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. It was in the fourth round last year that Djokovic’s U.S. Open ended, defaulted late in the first set for hitting a ball after ceding

Warrington rematch with Lara ends in draw
NEW YORK, SEP 5 (AP): Novak Djokovic did not seek to keep his thoughts to himself on court Saturday, the way he mostly did through his first two U.S. Open matches. Instead, he let it all out, slapping his chest or sneering with a fist raised to celebrate success, pointing to his ear to ask the crowd for noise. This was the Djokovic everyone is so accustomed to seeing — yes, winning on the Grand Slam stage, of course, as he always does in this magical season, but also animated and into it, encouraging the spectators to join him for the ride on his path toward tennis history. B E LG R A D E , S E P 5 (AGENCIES): European champions Serbia lost their title to Italy after enduring a 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-19, 25-11) defeat in the final of the Women’s European Volleyball Championship on Saturday at the Belgrade Arena. Cheered by the local fans, the Serbian team took the lead after a fierce first set, which they won by just
a tight two-point margin. The Italians dominated the second and third sets to overturn the scoreboard, before Serbia, the Olympic bronze medalists in Tokyo this summer, gave up chasing their third consecutive European gold, allowing their opponents to climb to the European throne. Paola Ogechu Egonu was unstoppable with 28
points for the Italians, while Tijana Boskovic stood out with 20 points scored for the losing team. Previously Turkey slammed Netherlands 3-0 in the battle for the third place of the tournament, held in Serbia, Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania from August 18 to September 4, with 24 teams competing for a place in the final in the Serbian capital.
First Brotherhood Coordination meeting was held on September 4 with WCYF, CYO and WSSA at Hotel Cedar Dimapur under the theme “Eradicating ‘Ism’ among the Rizes through sports”. It resolved to conduct sports annually which will be hosted annually among the Rizes alternatively and the 1st historical event will be hosted by WSSA on October 12, 2021 at DDSC Stadium Dimapur.
LONDON, SEP 5 (AGENCIES): Josh Warrington’s rematch with Mauricio Lara ended in a technical draw after the Mexican suffered a huge cut above his left eye following a clash of heads in the second round. The ringside doctor waved off the bout as Lara’s corner were unable to stem the bleeding from his gaping wound. It was a major disappointment for both fighters after a pulsating start in front of a partisan crowd in Leeds. Lara won their fight in February to take the IBF world featherweight title. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Warrington said he was “absolutely gutted” with the outcome. “I am confused, I don’t know what to say. Honestly felt I could burst into tears when the ref waved it off,” he said. “I thought I caught him in the first round and I thought I could see a nick there and keep targeting it. When I dived in there was a head clash and I am absolutely gutted.” Looking to avenge his only professional defeat, Leeds-born Warrington was roared on by 20,000 fans at Headingley.
a game and inadvertently hitting a line judge in the throat. Now he’ll play wildcard entry Jenson Brooksby, who edged 21st-seeded Aslan Karatsev in five sets to become, at 20, the youngest American man in the round of 16 at the U.S. Open since Andy Roddick in 2002. Other players advancing included Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini and No. 13 Jannik Sinner — they gave Italy a pair of men in the U.S. Open’s fourth round for the first time in the event’s 140-year history — along with 22nd-seeded American Reilly Opelka and South African Lloyd Harris, who beat seventhseeded Denis Shapovalov in straight sets. In women’s action, Olympic women’s gold medalist Belinda Bencic, 2019 U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu, 2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek and two-time major finalist Karolina Pliskova reached the fourth round. After eliminating a couple of inexperienced opponents ranked 121st and 145th, Djokovic faced someone with a far better resume in Nishikori, who was the runner-up at the 2014 U.S. Open and has been as high as No. 4.
Dimapur selected as Khelo India Centre
DIMAPUR, SEP 5 (NPN): The Aries Rifle and Pistol Shooting Academy, Dimapur has been selected by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) as a Khelo India Centre under the nation’s Khelo India scheme. The centre was approved by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports, Nagaland April 5, 2021. A press release by founder/proprietor, Aries Rifle & Pistol Shooting Academy, Merang Jamir informed that the delayed announcement was due to the pandemic situation that the world is currently facing which also prompted the academy to be shut for the last few months. The Aries Rifle and Pistol Shooting Academy was started with a 4-lane indoor shooting range in 2010 at NST Colony Dimapur. In spite of its humble beginnings, the academy has been able to promote young shooters to participate in various competitions outside the state with promising results over the years. The academy also organises various shooting competitions within the state from

time to time. The academy got a major impetus when its founder, Merang Jamir, received the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) B- Judge certificate in 2016. Only two years later, he was again awarded the D-Course Coach Certificate in 2018. The academy strictly follows the modern shooting sport rules as prescribed by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF). The shooting ranges of the academy are also modelled on the lines of international standards with some lanes having ISSF approved electronic scoring target systems, SIUS HS10 Hybridscore. The academy has so far constructed a full-fledged 10m, 25m and 50m shooting ranges at Bamunphu-
kuri-1, Dimapur, where the 4th North East Zone Shooting Championship 2016 was conducted under the aegis of the National Rifle Association of India. In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the academy was unable to function properly since the time it was declared as a Khelo India Centre. However, with the current relaxations of restrictions by the government, the academy is looking forward to resume its regular training sessions from October. The academy being made a Khelo India Centre also has given the team a renewed strength and enthusiasm to work towards the realisation of their dream of training Naga youths to one day participate in the Olympics.
Squads announced for Thomas & Uber, Sudirman Cups NEW DELHI, SEP 5 (IANS): Star Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal and B Sai Praneeth will spearhead the women’s and men’s teams respectively as the Badminton Association of India (BAI) on Sunday announced strong squads for the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals, scheduled in Denmark from October 9-17. BAI has also named a 12-member Indian team for the Sudirman Cup slated to take place from September 26 to October 3 in Finland. For the Thomas and Uber Cup, London Olympics bronze medallist Nehwal will be accompanied by top-3 singles ranks from the trials -- Malvika Bansod, Aditi Bhatt and Tasnim Mir -- in the 10-member women’s team alongside three doubles pairs, including Tanisha Crasto and Rutuparna Panda, who claimed the top spot in the trials. The 10-member men’s team also comprised of four singles players and three doubles pairs. Alongside Praneeth and the former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth, top-2 singles players from the trials -- Kiran George and Sameer Verma -- have received places in the team. sairaj Rankireddy has been selected in the team alongside top-2 ranked pairs from the trials. The players, for the Thomas and Uber Cup and the Sudirman Cup, were selected on the basis of their performances in the recently-concluded trials apart from the automatic selections of the players/pairs, who are placed inside Top20 in the world rankings. The two-time Olympics medallist PV Sindhu has not been included in the squad as she had requested not to be considered for selections citing post-Olympics recovery. “Other than the topranked Indians, we have selected players on the basis of their consistent show in the trials. In the absence of any tournaments, the trials and the new format helped us to zero in on the current in-form players as they have proved their abilities and have earned top rankings
in the trials. I believe these youngsters along with the senior shuttlers will create a good combination and all the new faces will also get much-needed experience of playing top-tier tournaments like the Thomas and Uber Cup as well as the Sudirman Cup,” BAI general secretary Ajay Singhania said. In the Thomas Cup, the Indian team has been placed in the Group C alongside defending champions China with Netherlands and Tahiti being the other two teams in the group. The women’s team has been drawn in Group B along with Thailand, Spain and Scotland in the Uber Cup. On the other hand, in the 12-member team for the 17th edition of the Sudirman Cup, top-ranked doubles pair from the trials Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun have been named in the squad alongside Srikanth, Praneeth and doubles pair of Satwiksairaj and Chriag, who made
it to the team on the basis of their world rankings. Among the women, top-2 doubles pairs from the trials, Tanisha-Rutuparna and Ashwini Ponnappa-N Sikki Reddy have been selected alongside Top-2 singles from the trials Bansod and Bhatt. The biennial tournament will see the Indian team competing alongside the defending champions China, Thailand and hosts Finland in Group A. Squads: Thomas and Uber Cup Men: B Sai Praneeth, Kidambi Srikanth, Kiran George, Sameer Verma, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, Dhruv Kapila, MR Arjun, Krishna Prasad Garaga, Vishnu Vardhan. Paralympic closing marks end of Tokyo’s 8-year Olympic saga
TOKYO, SEP 5 (AP): The final act of the delayed Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics came Sunday, almost eight years to the day after the Japanese capital was awarded the Games. The Paralympics ended a 13-day run in a colorful, circus-like ceremony at the National Stadium overseen by Crown Prince Akishino, the brother of Emperor Naruhito. The Olympics closed almost a month ago. These were unprecedented Olympics and Paralympics, postponed for a year and marked by footnotes and asterisks. No fans were allowed during the Olympics, except for a few thousand at outlying venues away from Tokyo. A few thousand school children were allowed into some Paralympic venues. “There were many times when we thought these games could not happen,” Andrew Parsons, president of the International Paralympic Committee, said on Sunday. “There were many sleep-
less nights.” The closing ceremony was entitled “Harmonious Cacophony” and involved both able-bodied actors and others with disabilities. The theme was described by organizers as a “world inspired by the Paralympics, one where differences shine.” Like the Olympics, the Paralympics went ahead as Tokyo was under a state of emergency due to the pandemic. Like the Olympics, testing athletes frequently and isolating them in a bubble kept the virus largely at bay, though cases surged among a Japanese population that is now almost 50% fully vaccinated. “I believe that we have reached the end of games without any major problems,” said Seiko Hashimoto, the president of the Tokyo organizing committee. But there was fallout, however. Lots of it. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced Friday — two days before the closing — that he would not continue

ganize the Olympics and Paralympics, double the original estimate. Several government audits suggested the real costs are twice that. All but USD 6.7 billion is public money. The pandemic probably cost organizers almost USD 800 million in lost ticket sales, a budget shortfall that will have to be made up by more government funds. In addition, local sponsors contributed more than USD 3 billion to the operating budget, but got little return with few fans. To y o t a , a m a j o r Olympics sponsor, pulled its Games-related television advertising in Japan because of public opposition to the Games. Toshiro Muto, the CEO of the organizing committee and a former deputy governor of the Bank of Japan, framed the costs as an investment. He acknowledged that it’s difficult to sort out what are — and what are not — Olympic costs. “It has to be scrutinized further to segregate
which part is investment and which part is expenditure,” Muto said in an interview last week. “It’s difficult to define the difference.” Tokyo was also haunted by a vote-buying scandal during the bid process that forced the resignation 2 1/2 years ago of Japanese Olympic Committee president Tsunekazu Takeda. He was also an International Olympic Committee member. Next up are the Beijing Winter Olympics, opening in five month. They have been billed as the “Genocide Games” by rights groups that want the Games pulled from China because of the reported internment of at least 1 million Uyghurs and other largely Muslim ethnic groups in Xinjiang in northwestern China. The US Department of State and several other governments have called the human rights violations in Xinjiang a genocide, and one major IOC sponsor — Intel — has said it agrees with the characterization.
in office. Suga hoped to get a reelection bump from the Olympics. He got the opposite as his approval rating plummeted after a slow vaccine rollout in Japan, and a contentious decision to stage the Games during the pandemic. Suga succeeded Shinzo Abe, who resigned a year ago for health reasons. It was Abe who celebrated in the front row of a Buenos Aires hotel ballroom on Sept. 7, 2013, when then-IOC President Jacques Rogge announced Tokyo as the 2020 host
— ahead of Istanbul and Madrid. In a sad coincidence, Rogge died a week ago at 79 after being in poor health. “ N ow t h a t P r i m e Minister Suga is forced out, taking the blame for his failure to combat the coronavirus, it would be impossible to claim that the Olympics and Paralympics were successful, a unifying moments for Japan,” Koichi Nakano, a political scientist at Sophia University, wrote in an email to The Associated Press.
The Paralympics may leave a more tangible legacy in Japan than the Olympics, raising public awareness about people with disabilities and the provision of accessible public space. The Paralympics involved a record number of athletes — 4,405 — and a record number of countries won medals. They also saw two athletes from Afghanistan compete, both of whom arrived several days late after fleeing Kabul. “The Tokyo Games were a model of efficiency
Paralympics: Nagar, Yathiraj help India end Tokyo campaign with 19 medals
Formulate big plans for next Olympics: Anurag
4th Test: Openers take Eng past 50 in 368-run chase
Krishna Nagar

TOKYO, SEP 5 (IANS): India ended the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games with 19 medals -- five gold, eight silver, and six bronze, a dramatic and historic rise for the country that had collected only 12 medals while participating in 11 editions of the Games from 1968 till 2016. On Sunday, the final day of the Tokyo Paralympic Games, India claimed two medals -- a gold and a silver in badminton -and finished 24th among 162 nations in the overall medal tally on the basis of gold medal count, while it is placed 20th based on the number of medals (19) it won. Krishna Nagar in Men’s Singles SH6 class, won India’s lone gold medal on Sunday, storm-
ing back after losing the second game to beat Hong Kong China’s Chu Man Kai 21-17, 16-21, 21-17. It was India’s second gold medal from the badminton courts and fifth overall in Tokyo. S u h a s Ya t h i r a j claimed a silver medal as he went down fighting to France’s world No 1 Lucas Mazur in three well-fought games in the final of the Men’s Singles SL4 class. An IAS officer who is currently posted as the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, Yathiraj stunned the Frenchman, the threetime World Champion, in the first game and had handy leads in the second and third but Mazur was too experienced and too
skilled and fought back from a game down to win 15-21, 21-17,21-15 in just over an hour to win the gold medal. India was expecting five medals from para-badminton but that was not to be as Tarun Dhillion lost in the bronze medal match. Pramod Bhagat and Palak Kohli, the scratch mixed doubles pair that had never practiced together till a month before the Paralympic Games, also missed out on a bronze medal as it went down to Japan’s Fujihara Daisuke and Akiko Sugino 21-23, 19-21 in two close games. Dhillon, the second Indian in the SL4 class, who had lost to Mazur in three games on Saturday, failed to overcome the disappointment as he went down tamely 21-17, 21-11 to Indonesia’s Fredy Seitiawan to miss out on a bronze medal. Dhillon was the second seed in the SL4 class behind Mazur and expected to meet him in the final. But a loss to Seitiawan in the Group Stage meant he finished second in the standings and thus had to play the top seed Mazur in the semifinal.
BENGALURU, SEP 5 (PTI): Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur on Sunday urged all the sports federations to formulate big plans for 2024 and 2028 Olympics so that India improves its position further. “All the sports federations have to play an important role and we have to work together to formulate a big project so that in 2024 and 2028, India’s position improves further,” Thakur told reporters. Thakur is here to take part in a host of events including interaction with the athletes. According to him, the public perception towards sports has changed with the government giving impetus to athletics, which resulted in India’s impressive performance in the Olympics and Paralympics. “The biggest thing is the changing attitude towards sports. When the government is giving all sorts of facilities and when the PM himself speaks to the sportspersons and encourages them, it has impact on every section of the society, be it individual, corporate, sports associations or any other organisation,” Thakur said.
LONDON, SEP 5 (PTI): England’s under-fire opening pair made a confident start after an indomitable Shadul Thakur and a calm Rishabh Pant ensured a 367-run lead for India as the fourth Test entered an engrossing home stretch. Haseeb Hameed (43 batting, 85 balls) and Rory Burns (31 batting, 109 balls) put on 77 runs in 32 overs on a placid track that showed little signs of wear and tear after Thakur (60 off 72 balls) and Pant (50 off 107 balls) helped India put on a commendable 466 in their second essay. With 291 runs out of the target of 368 required on the final day, England would at least fancy a draw if not a victory on the fifth day as the pitch has nothing on offer for the bowlers. More so, Ravindra Jadeja (0/28 in 13 overs), whose primary skill has been overlooked by the team management, looked pedestrian during the overs that he bowled during the penultimate evening. A few balls did turn but Burns tackled them with ease. The only bowler who made some impact was Jasprit Bumrah (7-3-110), who at least tried to exert some pressure on the
and friendliness,” Olympic historian David Wallechinsky said in an email to The Associated Press. “If it hadn’t been for the COVID-related difficulties, these would be right at or near the top of the best-organized of the 19 Olympics — Summer and Winter — I have attended.” The costs also set records. A study by the University of Oxford found these to be the most expensive Games on record. Japan officially spent USD 15.4 billion to or-
India’s Shardul Thakur plays a shot off the bowling of England’s James Anderson on day 4 of the 4th Test match.
openers. However, India still have their nose ahead in the game largely due to the performance of the lower middle-order where Thakur the batsman exceeded everyone’s expectations with a second halfcentury in the match. He was well complemented by Pant, who finally got some runs under his belt showing admirable restraint and sense of responsibility during the duo’s 100-run stand. Credit should also go to Umesh Yadav (25) and Jasprit Bumrah (24), who also played their cameos in taking the target past 350run mark. Had Thakur-Pant not
played their part, England would have ended up chasing a lesser total after yet another all-too familiar middle order collapse. From 296 for 3, within 10 over space, it became 312 for 6 before Thakur and Pant joined forces. It did help that the pitch became flatter as the day progressed and under bright sunshine, strokeplay became easier for both the batters as they could hit through the line. While Shardul, who is fondly called ‘Beefy’ by team’s head coach Ravi Shastri for his Ian Bothamlike exploits, is reinforcing his value as a bowling allrounder. His three straight drives were as good as any
of the shots that his illustrious seniors Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara hit on the third day. It was sight to behold as he picked an Ollie Robinson (32-7-105-2) slower early and dispatched it over long-on to reach 49 and then a pull shot for a single helped him complete his fifty. If Shardul’s 57 in the first innings had helped the team reach a respectable total, his approach in the second innings ensured that Pant wasn’t in his usually “harakiri” mode that brought about his downfall during a number of occasions this summer. The left hander curbed his instincts to charge down the track and played as per merit of each delivery. Only when he was in his 30’s that he lofted Moeen Ali for a one bounce four and in his 40’s charged out to slash James Anderson (33-10-79-1) over covers for a boundary. His innings had 76 dot balls which showed that he had learnt from his mistakes but he was distraught when he failed to get the elevation, offering a return catch to Moeen (26-0-118-2).
‘Paralympics will have special place in Indian sports history’
Narendra Modi
NEW DELHI, SEP 5 (PTI): With Indian athletes putting up their best ever show at the Tokyo Paralympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that their feat will always have a special place in the history of Indian sports and expressed hope to build on these successes to ensure greater participation in sports. Modi also praised the people of host Japan, particularly Tokyo, and its government, saying they must be lauded for their exceptional hospitality, eye for detail and spreading the much needed message of resilience and togetherness through these Olympics. He said, “In the history of Indian sports, the Tokyo Paralympics will
always have a special place. The games will remain etched in the memory of every Indian and will motivate generations of athletes to pursue sports. Every member of our contingent is a champion and source of inspiration.” India’s paralympians had an epoch-making campaign at the Tokyo Games where an unparalleled 19 medals, including five gold, helped them sign off 24th in the overall tally -- the highest ever. The tally also included eight silver and six bronze medals but most importantly, it was a performance during which history was scripted almost everyday with the contingent living up to the ‘Spirit in Motion’ motto of the Games. Modi said, “The historic number of medals India won has filled our hearts with joy. I would like to appreciate the coaches, support staff and families of our athletes for their constant support to the players. We hope to build on our successes to ensure greater participation in sports.”
