As experts have raised alarm that third wave of COVID-19 was inevitable and will affect children too, the Supreme Court on Thursday emphasising the need to prepare for the same including vaccinating people of age groups with young children. A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and MR Shah said that if preparations are made right away, we may be able to tackle the third wave for which scientific planning to vaccinate persons would be needed. “The third surge in India which is around the corner according to experts will affect children. So when a child goes to hospital, the mother and father will also have to go. That is why vaccination will have to be over for this group of people. We need to plan for this in a scientific way and thus make arrangement,” the court said.

“Today we have 1.5 lakh doctors who have finished medical course but waiting for NEET exam. How do you tap them? 1.5 lakh doctors and 2.5 lakh nurses are sitting at home. They will be crucial for third wave,” the court said. The court was hearing an appeal filed by the Central government against the show cause notice for contempt issued against its officers by the Delhi High Court for failing to provide 700 MT of oxygen to Delhi as per Supreme Court order. The bench war ned both Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Central government, and senior advocate Rahul Mehra, representing Delhi government, that the Supreme Court being the top Constitutional court of the country cannot be allowed to be a ground of recrimination.

We are staunch proponent of freedom of media to report court proceedings

NEW DELHI, MAY 6 (PTI): Supreme Cour t Thursday said it is a “staunch proponent of freedom of media” to report court proceedings and trashed a plea of the Election Commission that press should be reporting orders only and not observations, saying such a demand struck at

principles of open court and the fundamental right to freedom of speech under Constitution. “This court stands as a staunch proponent of the freedom of the media to report court proceedings. This we believe is integral to the freedom of speech and expression of those who speak, of those who wish to hear and to be heard and above all, in holding the judiciary accountable to the values which justify its existence as a constitutional institution,” a bench comprising justices

D Y Chandrachud and M R Shah said. The remarks were part of the judgement by which the top court did not allow the plea of the EC seeking expunction of remarks of the Madras High Court that the poll panel was responsible for surge in COVID-19 cases and murder charges be put on its responsible officers, saying the oral observations were not part of “official judicial record” and hence there was no question of expunging them. Referring to the right

of media, the judgment, penned by Justice Chandrachud, said citizens have a right to know as to what transpires in judicial proceedings through media and the freedom of speech and expression to media is also impliedly provided by Article 19 of the Constitution. The 31-page verdict said the freedom of speech and expression also extends to reporting the proceedings of judicial institutions and the courts are entrusted to perform crucial functions under the law.
