Peace can’t be forced but earned: Gov
DIMAPUR, JUN 6 (NPN): Nagaland Governor Prof. Jagsidh Mukhi maintained that peace cannot be forced upon but should be understood and accepted by all and for which people wielding power need to shake off their vain pride and work for peace. The Governor said this at a programme commemorating 70 years of peace (triennial summit of the Phoms) under the theme: “Proliferating Phom Day Beyond”, at Longleng public ground Monday. Prof. Mukhi said a broken society can only be healed when people stop abusing power and opportunities and start working for sustainable peace alongside sustainable development. The governor mentioned that the declaration of June 6, 1952 as Phom Day, marked an important event as Longleng district was flourishing due to the

spirit of universal brotherhood, DIPR report stated. Emphasising that peace was the urgent need of the day, Prof.Mukhi said he was deeply inspired to learn that leaders and peace heroes of Longleng had persuaded village elders of the tribe to shun the evil practice of conflicts, take an oath to end the head hunting, pledge to be peaceful and remain loyal to the government. He said Phom Day

should not only be about laying down of arms, which remained buried below the peace monument now, but also about laying down pride, greed, isms, misunderstandings and prejudice. He commented that it was also about giving up superiority over the weak, the poor and the environment at our disposal. He said India was on a transformational path and Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) was a
major initiative taken by the Central government. He however clarified that India’s quest for self-reliance did not mean isolation but rather in creating capabilities that would help the entire humanity in the true spirit of world as one family. The governor said he eagerly look forward to the platinum jubilee year of Phom Day and appealed to the peace-loving Phom community to bury egos and pursue a common dream of lasting peace. He called upon the gathering to join the peace movement within the community and beyond with other tribes. Principal chief conservator of forests and head of Forest Force Dharmendra Prakash, who too was present on the occasion, gave a speech on “Peace with Environment”.
Poor performance of schools no reason to abolish any post: CS Correspondent
KOHIMA, JUN 6 (NPN): Amidst RPP’s demand for abolishing the post of principal director in School Education department, chief secretary J Alam said the demand was misplaced and reminded that a lot of good things happened in the education department. Responding to a query on the sideline of an event here, he said just the decline in the recently-announced HSLC 2022 results could not be the reason for abolishment of any post and nor would the State government take such a decision. Alam said the government was analysing the performance of government schools and assured to take corrective action, adding that there were many reasons behind the poor results. He said the matter (result) would be reviewed at the (Cont’d on p-8) government-level.

NPF lauds HC’s order on Kol NL House Correspondent
KOHIMA, JUN 6 (NPN): Naga People’s Front (NPF) has welcomed the Calcutta High Court (CHC) order which has referred to arbitration, the dispute between Nagaland government and Civil Engineers Enterprises Private Limited (CEEPL) involving the one-sided tenancy agreement for the Nagaland House Complex annexe at Shakespeare Sarani, Kolkata. Talking to Nagaland Post, NPF secretary general Achumbemo Kikon welcomed the order of the Calcutta HC and believed that the case was now headed in a right direction. Kikon said although the issue should have been resolved years back, it had remained pending and resulted in the state losing colossal amount as accrued rent. He said the State government in particular and the Nagas in general were paying a heavy price in terms of revenue due
Achumbemo Kikon (NP)
to the mishandling of the issue. Kikon pointed out that even after the Court’s order, CEEPL was unwilling to heed to the order by insisting that tenancy be as per previous agreements. He said the state government should not allow such a unilateral decision as lease period has expired. It may be recalled that the Calcutta High Court in its order on May 6, 2022 directed that the case be referred to arbitration and for which an arbitrator was appointed. Kikon said the Court’s order should be executed as it had turned into a long drawn legal battle. He said that only an arbitrator
would be able to end the decades of dispute in a fair manner. Since the Court had passed its order, Kikon said no third party should be allowed to interfere in the case. While not wishing identify those responsible, Kikon said successive governments in the past had left the case unattended. However, the latest development had brought a big measure of relief and should pave the way not only in resolving the case but also end years of bitter legal disputes between Nagaland government an CEEPL. He said the property belongs to every Naga of the state and that the complex would provide a boon to the people since it was located at Kolkata, which is one of the closest metro cities to Nagaland in terms of geography. Kikon observed that the High Court order should end any further litigation over the matter for both the state and the tenant (CEEPL).
PPE kits row: AAP lodges FIR against Sarma India faces diplomatic backlash over BJP leaders’ Prophet remarks hurting religious sentiments. However, the party has taken action against the duo for not abiding by the official line on sensitive matters. The BJP issued a statement asserting that it “respects all religions” and “strongly denounces insults of any religious personality”. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Maldives, Jordan, Indonesia and Pakistan have registered protests made by BJP’s national spokesperson during a recent televised debate. Several of these countries summoned Indian ambassadors to denounce the derogatory statements.
Besides official outrage, anger against the remarks poured out on social media in several Arab nations with some people calling for a boycott of Indian goods. The influential Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said they came in a “context of intensifying hatred and abuse towards Islam in India and the systematic harassment of Muslims.” It also cited a decision by some states in India to ban the Muslim headscarf, the hijab, as well as incidents of violence against Muslims. Rejecting the OIC’s comments as “misleading
and mischievous,” the Indian foreign ministry said that the government accords the highest respect to all religions. In a statement, it said that the “offensive” comments and tweets “do not in any manner reflect the view of the government of India” and were made by individuals against whom action has been taken. India said the comments by the grouping of Muslim nations was “unwarranted” and “narrowminded”. “The offensive tweets and comments denigrating a religious personality were made by certain individuals. They do not, in any manner, reflect the
views of the Government of India,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said. The foreign ministry also criticized Pakistan, which had also condemned the remarks, calling it a “serial violator of minority rights” and saying that it should not engage in “alarmist propaganda.” Calling the comments “Islamophobic,” Qatar has demanded a public apology from India. The controversy turned particularly embarrassing for India as it erupted while its vice president, Venkaiah Naidu, and business leaders were on a visit to the country.
RESIGN!” the party said in a tweet from its official account. The party also petitioned Governor Jagdish Mukhi seeking a probe into the case and Sarma’s suspension till such time. AAP accused Sarma of awarding contracts to companies linked to his wife and son for supplying PPE kits at above-market rates during the pandemic. “When Himanta Biswa Sarma was health minister of Assam in 2020, his wife’s company, JCB Industries, and his family associate’s company, Meditime Healthcare, got orders to procure PPE kits at the cost of Rs.

A company owned by a business partner of Sarma’s wife, Agile Associates, received an order to deliver 10,000 PPE kits at a cost of Rs. 2,205 per kit”. Meanwhile, Sarma had earlier refuted the allegations and asked Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia to prove the allegation.
NEW DELHI, JUN 6 (AGENCIES): India is scrambling to contain a diplomatic storm that has erupted in Islamic countries following controversial comments made about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad by two officials of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Correspondent KOHIMA, JUN 6 (NPN): With declining discharge of springs during lean months and traditional wells drying up, the Land Resources department (LRD) kicked off a five-day re-orientation training on “springshed management” with an objective to focus on recharge and rejuvenation of natural springs in the state, in the conference hall, here, on Monday. Speaking at the programme, chief secretary J. Alam said the PM Amrit Sarovar scheme which was targeted to create 75 water bodies in each district
would be of high cost in Nagaland and a huge task to tackle. Wi t h 9 6 % ye t t o achieve the target, Alam stressed on fulfilling the existing critical and technical gaps and putting more focus on convergence. He challenged the department to double up their target of 206 spring sheds and added that taps, pipelines could be brought till the doorstep of the citizens. Alam, however said in order to achieve this, sources would require to be rejuvenated and protected or else the implementation would remain in paper and not on ground.
He also urged upon line departments to work together to address water scarcity in the state. Meanwhile, additional director Albert Ngullie said the main objective of springshed was to recharge underground aquifers by employing appropriate mechanical, vegetative and social measures. Ngullie said about 4,600 springs were to be inventorised on priority and rejuvenation of about 270 springs in five new PMKSY-WDC 2.0 projects were to be taken up to ensure water security to rural communities along with building and instal-

Mentioning how they had been submitting various reminders and representations, as well as verbal enquiries, to the department for addressing the problems faced by the school time, the organisations accused the department of turning a deaf ear to all their pleas and entreaties. According to the organisations, the Government High School, Chessore was the only government high school catering to educational needs of more than 28 villages. They said the genesis of the school’s problem began in 2011 when the incumbent Maths teacher was transferred without any reliever, which was followed by transfer on promotion of Science teacher without any reliever.
Further, one Science teacher retired soon after and, to make matters worse, the headmaster was also transferred on promotion, leaving the school entirely without adequate manpower and subject teachers. They said the denial and discrimination in the school was in direct contravention to the department’s very own vision of quality education and the constitutional rights of the students. Keeping in mind the seriousness and gravity of the situation in which the poor students are at the receiving end, both the organisations asked the department fulfil their demands as mentioned in their numerous representations, failing which they warned of taking recourse to actions for which the department would be held solely responsible.

Assam mills’ staff death toll rises to 104 G U WA H A T I , J U N 6 ( AG E N C I E S ) : T h e death toll of workers of two “closed” Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL)-owned paper mills in Assam has gone up to 104. Hizfur Rahman (54), an employee of Cachar Paper Mill and a resident of Badarpur Ghat in Karimganj district, passed away at a nursing home in Silchar on Sunday evening, The Shillong Times report stated. “Rahman was suffering from diabetes but, owing to financial crisis, could not afford the requisite medical treatment. He was admitted to a nursing home after he complained of high fever and other complications a couple of days back but passed away at 7.15 pm yesterday,” Manobendra Chakraborty, president of the Joint Action Committee of Recognised Unions (JACRU) of the Nagaon and Cachar paper mills, informed on Monday. “Every living worker
of the two mills is passing d ay s w i t h u n b e a r a b l e suffering, stress and trauma. The workers have lost all hope to live life with dignity as they are unable to meet the expenses of medical treatment with their salaries unpaid for the past 64 months,” Chakraborty said. The unfortunate incident comes about a couple of months after the Assam government had finally taken over the assets of the paper mills at Jagiroad and Panchgram with Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) declared as the successful bidder. The Cachar Paper Mill at Panchg ram in Hailakandi district and Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagiroad in Morigaon have been non-functional since October 2015 and March 2017 respectively. It may be noted that although the Assam government had no stake in the paper mills, it has been relentlessly pursuing to resolve the matter on humanitarian grounds.

A test for governance
L
ong ago, check gates were mainly located at inter-state borders to serve the purpose of inspection of the vehicle and occupants for security matters and livestock so as to prevent sickly or diseased animals from entry. Personnel manning the check gates were also to verify documents for movement of transport and goods. Over the decades, check gates especially in Nagaland earned notoriety as they turned solely into cash collection points. Collection of money became the order of the day. Joining around a dozen cash collectors of around a dozen departments were nearly ten Naga groups besides those from various civil society organisation, unions and associations. All of them believed that they had the right to collect tax. This phenomenon where one truck had to pay to over two dozen agencies and organisations etc became a real menace that made check gates earn notoriety for the state. Trucks loathe crossing Dimapur check gate(s) as drivers have to pay exorbitant amounts to all the authorised, unauthorised and illegal collectors. As mentioned in several issues of this newspaper since the early 90s, check gates became lucrative postings for police and for ‘official duty’ for staff of various departments such as –taxes, excise, geology & mining, forest, veterinary & animal husbandry, transport including Dimapur Municipal Council(DMC)etc. The deployment of staff from so many departments seem to indicate that these departments have established offices at check gates. It may be recalled that the state government had issued notifications twice –on June 22,2009 and reaffirmed on June 12,2012-banning collections in any form at check gates and highways. The Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench had in a landmark judgment on June 3,2014 had banned on collections in any form by CSOs. In 2012 ACAUT Nagaland had organised a rally calling on the government to implement the ban orders by the state government besides a massive rally was organised in 2013 against all forms of collection. Even the report of the three-member High Power Committee (HPC) set up by the government in 2014 to look into illegal collections submitted its report in 2015 but it has been kept under wraps. A single truck had to pay collectors of multiple government and other groups besides paying multiple times for the same items- truck wise, item wise etc. Even trucks had to pay amount depending on number of tyres-more the tyre, higher the fee. During September 2019, volunteers of the Public Action Committee(PAC), set up under the aegis of the Naga Council Dimapur(NCD) thwarted illegal and multiple collections at check gates but the government did precious little. Eventually the Governor of Nagaland Prof. Jagdish Mukhi prevailed upon the state government which led to issuance of an order on May 19 for closure of all check gates, except inter-state gates while those manned by state government departments will have to close down by May 31. Some CSOs in Dimapur wanted a relaxation of the ban for DMC. This would mean a compromise and eventually could be counter-productive. People of Dimapur and Nagaland want an end to the collections which have pushed up prices illogically. Perhaps there is also a need to seriously look into prevalence of market syndicates which also provide cover for ‘fixing’ rates and eliminating healthy competition. All these are not good for the people and for which the government should not ignore any longer.
DailyDevotion “Work Out” What God “Works in” You …work out your own salvation…for it is God who works in you… —Philippians 2:12-13 Your will agrees with God, but in your flesh there is a nature that renders you powerless to do what you know you ought to do. When the Lord initially comes in contact with our conscience, the first thing our conscience does is awaken our will, and our will always agrees with God. Yet you say, “But I don’t know if my will is in agreement with God.” Look to Jesus and you will find that your will and your conscience are in agreement with Him every time. What causes you to say “I will not obey” is something less deep and penetrating than your will. It is perversity or stubbornness, and they are never in agreement with God. The most profound thing in a person is his will, not sin. The will is the essential element in God’s creation of human beings— sin is a perverse nature which entered into people. In someone who has been born again, the source of the will is Almighty God. “…for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” With focused attention and great care, you have to “work out” what God “works in” you— not work to accomplish or earn “your own salvation,” but work it out so you will exhibit the evidence of a life based with determined, unshakable faith on the complete and perfect redemption of the Lord. As you do this, you do not bring an opposing will up against God’s will— God’s will is your will. Your natural choices will be in accordance with God’s will, and living this life will be as natural as breathing. Stubbornness is an unintelligent barrier, refusing enlightenment and blocking its flow. The only thing to do with this barrier of stubbornness is to blow it up with “dynamite,” and the “dynamite” is obedience to the Holy Spirit. Do I believe that Almighty God is the Source of my will? God not only expects me to do His will, but He is in me to do it.

To mark the importance of healthy food practices, World Food Safety Day is observed on 7th of June every year. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) this day is marked to draw attention and mobilize action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, contributing to food safety and improve human health. The theme for this year’s World Food Safety Day is, “Safer food, better health”, which stresses on the need for as holistic approach towards food system for better health in a sustainable manner to prevent food borne diseases. It focuses on the access of safe food which is essential for the health and well-being of people, animals and the environment. Only when food is safe, we can benefit from its nutritional value and the mental and social benefits of sharing a safe meal. Safe food is one of the most critical guarantors for good health. Unsafe foods are the cause of many diseases and contribute to other poor health conditions, such as impaired growth and development, micronutrient deficiencies, non-communicable or communicable diseases and mental illness. Globally, one in ten people are affected by foodborne illnesses annually.
With an estimated 600 million cases of foodborne illnesses annually, unsafe food is a threat to human health and economies, disproportionally affecting vulnerable and marginalized people, especially women and children, Foodborne illnesses are usually infectious or toxic in nature and often invisible to the plain eye, caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances entering the body through contaminated food or water. Food safety has a critical role in assuring that food stays safe at every stage of the food chain - from production to harvest, processing, storage, distribution, all the way to preparation and consumption. Food safety is a shared responsibility between governments, producers and consumers. Everybody has a role to play from farm to table to ensure the food we consume is safe and will not damage our health. Through World Food Safety Day, WHO and Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) pursue efforts to mainstream food safety in the public agenda and reduce the burden of foodborne diseases globally. “Food safety is everyone’s business” is the slogan for World Food Safety Day and urges that we all play a role in maintaining food safety throughout the entire supply chain, from farm to table. Safe food for better health
ood is one of the basic needs for any living being. Food is must for all of us and it is good to get safe and hygienic food as unsafe food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances causes more than 200 diseases. Recent estimates indicate that the impact of unsafe food costs low- and middle-income economies around US$ 95 billion in lost productivity each year. There is no doubt that good hygiene practices in the food and agricultural sectors help to reduce the emergence and spread of foodborne diseases. Access to sufficient amounts of safe food is key to sustaining life and promoting good health. After decades of steady decline, world hunger has slowly been on the rise since 2015. An estimated 821 million people in the world suffered from hunger in 2018. If nothing changes, the immense challenge of achieving the Zero Hunger Target by 2030 will not be achieved. At the same time, overweight and obesity continue to increase in all regions of the world, according to The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2019. Food safety has a critical role in assuring that food stays safe at every stage of the food chain - from production to harvest, processing, storage, distribution, all the way to preparation and consumption. The way in which food is produced, stored, handled and consumed affects the safety of our food. World Food Safety Day
The Indo-Naga political settlement is on the wrong track: The culprit is not who you think
T
he Indo-Naga political settlement has dragged on endlessly without producing any significant progress despite decades of a ceasefire; a grim outlook lingers, shaped by the players’ actions and inactions, some of which predate the Statehood. Together, the cumulative and counterproductive deeds remain major stumbling blocks. While the Nagas blame India for using delaying tactics in the settlement process, India, on the other hand, condemns and ridicules the Nagas for their inherent puerile mentality, highlighted by fraternal betrayals and manipulative maneuvers; thus, giving India an unexpected advantage. So, who’s to blame? The Naga freedom movement has turned into nothing more than a political football match within the various faction groups for power and greed. (Let me be clear: I have never accused any one individual, for that would amount to character assassination, and I am no stranger to getting slanders and false accusations, but this is no place to talk about that here because we have more critical issues of national interest to deliberate). Without digging further into the pernicious past that brought catastrophic damages to a genuinely worthy cause, Nagas needs to focus on current hurdles and find ways to move forward. If the 16-Point Agreement (1960) and the Shillong Accord (1975) sowed discord, the current FA deepened the Naga national divide. Similar to the previous nemeses, the I-M initiated FA repeated the failure to include the participation of all the Naga stakeholders. Thus, the once invincible Naga freedom movement fissured so deeply that it became vulnerable to further erosion and brought India an unexpected windfall, reaping dividends at the expense of the Naga leaders’ lack of wisdom and judgment. All these missteps, including pointless dialogues with different groups, make the current FA any success a moot point, much less sustainable until Nagas remove hurdles and take appropriate steps moving forward in a unified and conciliatory effort.
It is hard to imagine how a political solution of this magnitude can be achieved without uniting and gaining the input of all the Naga groups and stakeholders. The Nagas society comprises dozens of tribes, and their diversity is what they are all about. And diversity is a critical component of unity because it brings together bright and challenging ideas and strengthens unity. Of course, unity is meant to produce good results. Otherwise, what’s the use? But the Nagas’ combined missteps have caused considerable damage to the settlement process in part because they have caused Naga unity to devolve into numerous and competing groups. The answer now is for all Naga groups to stop finger-pointing and bickering and start uniting into a single voice for the good of all Nagas and future generations. As expressed in my previous articles, no constructive measures can be achieved until the Nagas move past the discord and disagreement into a unified group. A framework agreement is not a final agreement, but a means to an end. The final settlement should produce a signed Treaty. Negotiation is a process. So, a framework agreement provides an instrument for negotiation for the parties involved. In this case, the parties are the Indian government and the Naga Freedom Movement (not just one or two faction groups). FA is an essential element, an agreed-upon agenda—a platform—for further negotiations until a settlement is reached. Therefore, careful deliberations are crucial among all stakeholders before starting with the contesting party. FA can be rescinded when proven for fraud, such as the failure to bring all stakeholders is considered invalid. The I-M’s inability to represent the voice of the Naga populace makes the current FA deceptive, rendering it null. It lacked the participation of all the Naga stakeholders. Also, failure to address other critical issues such as integration in the negotiation makes it even more controversial. As an essential component of the more extensive process of designing and implementing
a final agreement, the ceasefire between the Nagas and India was a silver lining in one of the subcontinent’s longest-standing armed conflicts. Yet rather than making the ceasefire a confidence-building measure, the ceasefire has lost its zeal, contributing to a slackening of the patriotic spirit because of the Naga groups pursuing their self-interests. This issue is demonstrated by how the various groups are vying to earn the title of bringing victory to this long-standing saga by meeting central Indian leaders pleading for the final settlement without realizing their follies. When will all these acts of shamelessness and ignorance end? The Nagas must understand that no single person or party can accomplish their goal, for it is no small feat. The work will require the collective action, commitment, and collaboration of every Naga society. Shared principles and collective actions are the best building blocks for attaining the Nagas’ ultimate goal. If the Nagas have lost sight of it, they need only look at the Ukrainians. No words can describe their patriotic efforts. Not only ordinary citizens and the bulk of the unknown soldiers answering the call to defend the nation but Ukrainian millionaires and billionaires who have left their businesses and families used their own resources to fight for their country. The Nagas should learn lessons from the Ukrainians’ patriotic spirit and actions. The stumbling block now to a final agreement is a lack of unity. The key to success then is to move forward with positive and constructive postures only when all the Nagas are united. But unity for the sake of unity is not the answer either. Unity without real meaning and purpose would be like a person having no backbone. While the unity of opinion is impractical, unity for a common goal is achievable in a democratic system of honest and constructive efforts. Unity demands compromise. And when the Nagas understand these fundamental ideas, the Indo-Naga political settlement process will get on track and move forward. Dr. Vikuosa Nienu
(WFSD) which is observed on 7 June aims to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) jointly facilitate the observance of World Food Safety Day, in collaboration with Member States and other relevant organizations. On 3 August 2020, the World Health Assembly passed a resolution WHA73.5 to recognize WFSD as an important milestone and a platform for raising awareness at all levels about the importance of food safety, and for promoting and facilitating actions to prevent foodborne diseases at local, national, regional and global levels; to strengthen global efforts for food safety to reduce the burden of foodborne disease. On 20 December 2018 the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 73/250 proclaiming the day. As of 2019, every 7 June is a time to celebrate the myriad benefits of safe food. The day is an important way of making people aware of food safety issues, demonstrating how to prevent illness through food safety, discussing collaborative approaches to improved food safety across sectors, promoting solutions and ways of being more food
T
safe, etc. Food safety is a shared responsibility between governments, producers and consumers. Everybody has a role to play from farm to table to ensure the food we consume is safe and will not damage our health. Through WFSD, WHO and FAO pursue efforts to mainstream food safety in the public agenda and reduce the burden of foodborne diseases globally. It is important to ensure food safety and we need to transform food systems to deliver better health, and we need to do so in a sustainable manner. Food systems policy-makers, practitioners and investors should reorient their activities to increase the sustainable production and consumption of safe foods in order to improve health outcomes. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been established under Food Safety and Standards, 2006 which consolidates various acts & orders that have hitherto handled food related issues in various Ministries and Departments. FSSAI has been created for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. Together we can ensure safe food for all of us and let us do it for our better health. Ranjan K Baruah, Ganeshguri, Guwahati, bkranjan@gmail.com (With inputs from UN publication)
Drug menace in India
he drug menace is a serious concern for almost all states in India. But what is unfortunate is that the concerned government authorities are seemingly “unconcerned”. Society will have to pay a heavy price for that. Well, what does one have to say if young people as tender as 12/13 years are addicted to the deadly drugs? Is it not the fault of the authorities in power? Are the parents of the addicts equipped themselves to crack down on the callous drug dealers and peddlers who destroy the lives of their kids? No, absolutely not. Whose job is this if not police and narcotic departments? Why are we so “silent” while the underhand drug business is “thriving” more than ever before? Drug cartels and peddlers are expanding their network with a vengeance in almost every city and town. Do we know the new brigand of peddlers are all out to pounce upon the new breed of buyers – that could be your children and my children? Why is the government machinery so complacent? This laid-back attitude is indeed detrimental. One child specialist – Dr. Mehta from Rohini, New Delhi laments --- “innumerable youngsters in schools and colleges are ruining their lives. They are completely addicted to various intoxicants. These day certain bad companions always entice the gullible others to try various kinds of addictive drugs like marijuana, cocaine, heroin, LSD, hashish, ecstasy et al. This is how one falls prey to drugs which has become a serious threat to countless households.” True, in high places the elites of corporate houses, entertainment celebrities and models have succumbed to the temptation of the various expensive intoxicants. These celebrities are directly or indirectly misleading the new generation. The sensational suicide case of film star Sushant Singh Rajput exposed the underbellies of Bollywood. Very importantly, as reported, rampant cases of thefts, robberies, burglaries, and muggings in various cities, towns and villages have direct links with the increase in drug abuse. Incidentally, many distraught parents whom this writer met with now say with a deep sense of regret that if the Assam government can tackle the drug malaise head-on why
can’t other states in India. They are absolutely right! The Chief Minister of Assam himself had roared out the “pledge” to drive the final nail in the coffin of the drug dealers. Given the increasing vices, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma never held himself back. He gave full power to the police forces, the intelligence and narcotic agencies to deal with the evil mongers. What is striking is that the Chief Minister himself drove a bulldozer over the confiscated illegal drugs. At places, he burnt the drugs to ashes. The police departments are on toe round the clock. Is it not commendable? Lakhs of parents have showered blessings upon Dr. Himanta Sarma for his unprecedented move. In fact, it was well-intended to save the “youths and the society from disaster.” It is high time that all states in India should emulate what Assam has done. The Chief Minister of Manipur has also recently followed suit and is determined to fight the drug menace. Many women organisations have come forward to support CM Shri Biren Singh. A state, before setting out the plan, must constitute a high-power committee to help coordinate and monitor the execution. Some changes in the narcotic rules and regulations are also imperative. We should not at all be soft on any forces that contribute to ruining the lives of young children. The police force should be given full powers without political interference. What is clear here is that in haste we cannot fight the menace entrenched in society. We need to put concerted efforts as recently rightly pointed out by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma. All NGOs and the concerned stakeholders must stand together and support the respective governments of the states. It’s everyone’s duty. The vices have penetrated the deep recess of society. Hope this time the governments’ promises of “Nasha Mukt Bharat” will not go up in smoke. SRINAGAR, JUN 6 (PTI): Assembly elections should be held in Jammu and Kashmir so that the people have an elected gover nment which only can end their miseries, National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah said on Monday. “Election should be held. This government is not the government of the people, it is bureaucracy. People’s miseries will not go away until there is an elected government. For that, it is important that elections take place, people vote and their own government comes into power,” Abdullah told reporters in Pulwama. In a question on the spike in terrorism-related violence in the valley, the NC president said the situation was dangerous and a matter of concern. “They (the BJP) had said Article 370 was responsible for militancy. But, how has the militancy risen after its revocation on August 5, 2019 then? So, Article 370 was not responsible for it. The situation is dangerous and it is impacting the country as well. It is a matter of concern,” he said.
NEW DELHI, JUN 6 (PTI): India on Monday successfully carried out a “training launch” of the Agni-4 intermediate-range ballistic missile from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha, marking a significant boost to the country’s military capabilities. In a brief statement, the defence ministry said the test was carried out at around 7:30 pm. It said the successful test of Agni-4 reaffirms India’s policy of having a “credible minimum deterrence” capability.

dismissed the charges and said the department concerned is looking into the matter. He said the state government has already initiated a special land survey exercise and ‘Bhoodan land’ will be included in it. “After the completion of the exercise, we will have records of all sorts of lands,” he said. There have been allegations that the state government does not have records of donated lands that were distributed among the landless people during the 1951 Bhoodan movement launched by Acharya Vinoba Bhave. Bhave had walked across the country asking people to consider him as one of their sons and donate one-seventh of their land to him, which he later distributed among the landless people. Kumar refused to make any direct comment on former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s claim that he was feeling suffocated within the ruling NDA in the state. “What can I say? KOLKATA, JUN 6 (PTI): The West Bengal cabinet on Monday gave its approval to remove the governor and make the chief minister the chancellor of all state-run agriculture, health and animal resources universities, in addition to those under the education department, a senior official said. The cabinet also agreed to the proposal to remove the governor from the post of the ‘visitor’ of private universities and give it to the state’s education minister instead. Monday’s meeting was presided over by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself.“The cabinet on Monday gave its consent to make the chief minister the chancellor of all staterun universities, including those under the agricultural, health and animal resources development departments,” the official said. It had on May 26 given
its nod to the proposal that the chief minister would be the chancellor of all staterun universities run by the education department. The proposal will be introduced as a bill in the assembly in the coming monsoon session, the official said. When passed the chief minister will head the agriculture universities of Kalyani and North Bengal, besides the West Bengal University of Health Services, besides the prestigious Calcutta University and Jadavpur Universities which are under the education department. The governor is at present the chancellor of all the state-run universities and the move to hand it over to the chief minister is being seen in political circles in the state as taking the ongoing conflict between Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and the Trinamool Congress government to a new level.

polls: BJP follows Cong example, Oppn demands arrest of Nupur, Jindal RS sends its Rajasthan MLAs to resort FIR on death threat to BJP functionary
NEW DELHI, JUN 6 (PTI): Stepping up pressure for legal action against Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal, opposition parties on Monday demanded that they be arrested for their controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad and accused the BJP of denting the image of the country. While the ruling party faced more criticism at home, the diplomatic fallout of the row continued as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Indonesia, Jordan, UAE, Maldives, Oman and Afghanistan joined several Muslim nations in condemning the alleged derogatory remarks. BJP had on Monday suspended its spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled Naveen Kumar Jindal, its Delhi media head, in a firefighting exercise, but the opposition parties like the Congress, AAP, BSP, SP and the Left dismissed it as mere “drama” and “sham” and demanded strict legal action against the two. While Sharma is facing cases in various cities over her remarks, the Delhi Police has now registered an FIR on her complaint that she is receiving death threats. Delhi Police officials said the FIR has been

registered under various IPC sections like 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) against the unidentified people. Sharma will be summoned by the Mumbai police to record her statement in connection with an FIR against her on a complaint by Muslim outfit Raza Academyover her remarks, according to Mumbai police C o m m i s s i o n e r S a n j ay Panday. The Congress hit out at the BJP, demanding the immediate arrest of those who have defamed India at the international level instead of enacting a “drama of action”. Asking why those responsible for putting out offensive comments
had not been ar rested yet, the Congress said it was unacceptable for the nation to apologise for such mistakes. “Divided internally, India becomes weak externally. BJP’s shameful bigotry has not only isolated us but also damaged India’s standing globally,” Rahul Gandhi said on Twitter. AIMIM also demanded the immediate arrest of the BJP functionaries and said the country’s image has been dented internationally due to the “wrong policies” of the BJP. Aam Aadmi Party leader and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia alleged the BJP has led the country to such a situation that even “small countries are now challenging the great nation of India”. The opposition parties targeted the prime minister and the BJP after the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation
(OIC) slammed India for the comments by the two Bharatiya Janata Party functionaries and even urged the UN to take necessary measures to ensure that the rights of Muslims are protected in India. T h e B J P ’s a c t i o n against its two functionaries cap a series of statements from its top brass and also RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat that sought to distance their organisations from the shrill and combative religious rhetoric. The party’s action, however, has also drawn angry reactions from a section of BJP’s faithful cheerleaders on social media, more so for Sharma, ref lecting the dissonance between the army of supporters and its leadership, which acted to contain negative fallouts. The Left parties alleged the BJP was “forced to act” and suspend Nupur Sharma due to pressure from other countries. “Nupur Sharma publicly thanked party leaders Amit Shah, PMO and others for support. Now under pressure from other countries, they are forced to act and suspend her. These are patrons of hate speech. Condemn Isolate Defeat them Save India,” said CPI-M in a tweet. CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury questioned how BJP leaders speaking on behalf of the party can be called “fringe elements.” The opposition parties
also said the country will not apologise for the mistakes of the BJP. “Instead of doing a drama of action against anti-social elements in the party who have defamed India at the international level, it should immediately arrest them,” the Congress said. “ Wi t h t h e i r h a t e mongering propagandist politics, BJP hasn’t just shamed the country but put the nation which once stood for peace and harmony on trial for the whole world to see,” it alleged. All-India Muslim Personal Law Board said the BJP’s action against the two functionaries was a “good thing” but not enough and demanded stringent legal action against them. The Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC) said it will hold protests across the country on June 10 if no legal action was initiated against Sharma. The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), however, said there should be “a strict law” against blasphemy in India and supported a Twitter trend calling for a boycott of Qatar Airways. RSS affiliate questioned the Qatar gover nment’s stand on the row and said Hindu beliefs were insulted when S h iva l i n g, w h i c h wa s claimed to have been found at the Gyanvapi mosque premises in Varanasi, was called a fountain by a section of people.
JAIPUR, JUN 6 (PTI): The BJP on Monday shifted most of its Rajasthan MLAs to a resort here for a “training camp” ahead of the Rajya Sabha election on June 10, days after a similar move by the state’s ruling Congress. While some MLAs reached the resort at Jamdoli on the Jaipur-Agra highway on their own, others took the two buses provided for them at the party office in the city. Nearly 60 MLAs had reached the resort, a party leader said in the evening. “This is a training camp in which the MLAs will be given training on the Rajya Sabha elections,” a party spokesperson said. Senior leaders are expected to address sessions at the camp, apparently being held to keep the MLAs from being won over by the ruling party ahead of the election. The Congress has already moved many of the party and independent MLAs to a hotel in Udaipur, saying it fears horse-trading by the BJP. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot held a meeting with the legislators and asked them to stay united. The Congress has fielded three candidates from the state for the Rajya Sa bha polls. The BJP nominated one candidate and is backing media baron Subhash Chandra as an independent. Congress sources said

more than 100 MLAs, including 12 of the 13 independents, are present at the hotel in Udaipur. All three of its candidates – Mukul Wasnik, Randeep Surjewala and Pramod Tiwari – are also present there. Former deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot, m e a n w h i l e, r e a c h e d Sriganganagar from New Delhi by train and was given a grand welcome by party workers and local people. From there, he went to Punjab to meet singer Sidhu Moosewala’s family members. Moosewala was shot dead by assailants on May 29. Pilot then left for New Delhi again. He had gone to the national capital on Friday. With the Rajya Sabha election date closing in, Director General (DG) of Anti-Corruption Bureau B L Soni held a meeting with officers and directed them to
stay alert to check attempts at horse-trading. The meeting followed the gover nment’s chief whip and cabinet minister Mahesh Joshi writing to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) against alleged attempts at horse-trading. An ACB spokesperson said the complaint by the chief whip was registered for inquiry, and the matter has been handed over to ACB SP-I Yogesh Dadhich. “There are possibilities of horse-trading. So, I have submitted a written complaint to the ACB to remain alert and to make such attempts unsuccessful,” Joshi said after filing the complaint on Sunday. The Congress with its 108 MLAs in the state assembly is set to win two seats. After winning the two spots, the Congress will have 26 surplus votes, 15 short of the required 41 to win a third seat.

MUMBAI, JUN 6 (PTI): The ED has filed a fresh chargesheet against absconding jeweller Mehul Choksi, his wife Priti and others under the antimoney laundering law in connection with the over Rs 13,000-crore PNB loan fraud case, officials said on Monday. This is the first prosecution complaint filed by the federal agency against Choksi’s wife Priti Pradyotkumar Kothari. She has been charged by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) with “helping her husband in layering of the proceeds of crime”. The chargesheet, filed under criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), was placed before a special court in Mumbai in March and the court has taken its cognisance on Monday, the officials said. This is the third chargesheet against Choksi after the ED field the first two in 2018 and 2020. It is understood that the agency will seek the extradition of Choksi’s wife from Antigua, where the couple are based right now, and may also get notified a Interpol arrest warrant against her on the strength of this chargesheet. Choksi has been
staying in Antigua since 2018 after leaving India. The ED alleged that Priti was “hand-in-glove with her husband Mehul Choksi in getting companies incorporated for him for laundering and siphoning of proceeds of crime and utilising and projecting them as untainted”. “She was aware of the source of monies which were being routed/siphoned by her husband illegally and fraudulently. She was abettor of the crime thereby being actually involved in the laundering of proceeds of crime...,” the ED alleged.

Washington and London hope the deliveries will help Ukraine turn the tide of the war in its eastern Donbas region which Russia appears minded to capture entirely. They are unlikely to have an immediate impact, however. The Pentagon said last week that it will take at least three weeks to get the U.S. weapons onto the battlefield. Russia-backed separatists have fought the Ukrainian government since 2014 in the Donbas. The U.S. has stopped short of offering Ukraine longer-range weapons that could fire deep into Russia and could inflame tensions with Moscow. Russia’s own use of missiles in Ukraine, mean-
North’s status as a nuclear power and negotiating economic and security concessions from a position of strength. U.S. and South Korean forces conducted a similar live-fire exercise following North Korea’s previous ballistic launches on May 25, which South Korea’s military said involved an ICBM flown on medium-range trajectory and two shortrange weapons. Those tests came as Biden wrapped up his trip to South Korea and Japan, where he reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to defend both allies.

UK boosts Ukraine support with missile system KYIV, JUN 6 (AP): The British government said Monday that the multiplelaunch rocket systems it is offering to Ukraine will bring “a significant boost in capability” for the country’s efforts to resist Russia’s invasion. “If the international community continues its support, I believe Ukraine can win” its war against Russia, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said in a statement. The statement came after comments Sunday by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who warned the West against sending longer-range rocket systems to Ukraine. The British government described the M270 weapon system as a “cutting edge” military asset which can strike targets up to 80 kilometers (50 miles) away “with pinpoint accuracy.” The United Kingdom pledged last week to send the weapons. It gave no details about delivery dates. The U.S. last week announced plans to deliver USD 700 million of security assistance for Ukraine, including four precisionguided, medium-range rocket systems, as well as helicopters, Javelin anti-tank systems, radars, tactical vehicles and more.

It was North Korea’s 18th round of missile tests in 2022 alone — a streak that included the country’s first launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles in nearly five years. South Korean and U.S. officials also say North Korea is preparing to conduct its first nuclear test since September 2017 as leader Kim Jong Un pushes a brinkmanship aimed at cementing the
Friday. The meeting comes at a tense time for the future of the negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. Iran has limited the IAEA’s monitoring activities for more than a year, and has failed to provide what Grossi called “credible information” about discovered nuclear material at three of Iran’s sites. Additionally, talks between senior diplomats from Britain, China,
France, Germany and Russia to discuss bringing Tehran back into compliance with the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action stalled earlier this year. The pact eased sanctions on Iran in return for curbs on its nuclear program. The United States pulled out of the accord under former President Donald Trump and reimposed sanctions on Iran, prompting Tehran to resume its

uranium enrichment. Grossi said he was neither for nor against a possible vote to censure Iran during this week’s meeting, stressing the importance of continued cooperation with Iran despite recent tensions. “I believe that it’s in no one’s interest that the cooperation between the agency and Iran diminishes even further,” he said. Still, without adequate
cooperation on Iran’s part, there is an “impasse” between the agency and Iran’s leadership, Grossi said. “These issues will not go away - they are not solved, they are not clarified.” Grossi repeated his warnings that Iran is nearing the amount of nuclear material necessary to create a bomb, saying Monday they are “very, very close” to acquiring a “significant quantity” of this material.

SEOUL, JUN 6 (AP): The U.S. and South Korean militaries launched eight ballistic missiles into the sea Monday in a show of force matching a North Korean missile display a day earlier that extended a provocative streak in weapons demonstrations. The allies’ live-fire exercise involved eight Army Tactical Missile System missiles — one American and seven South Korean — that were fired into South Korea’s eastern waters across 10 minutes following notifications for air and maritime safety, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff and U.S. Forces Korea. The tit-for-tat missile launches were aimed at demonstrating the ability to respond swiftly and accurately to North Korean attacks, the South Korean military said. di said the gunmen also set off some kind of explosive or grenade. Many Nigerians expressed shock and anger over the attack in Owo, a small town of traders and government workers located 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the Ondo state capital of Akure. The central location of the church raised questions as to how the gunmen got there unnoticed. Rahaman Yusuf said many people tried to find out the fate of their relatives after the attack. “Some came only to realize they are dead,” he said, adding that they also went to hospitals to see if their loved ones were among the wounded. Workers at the Federal Medical Center in Owo struggled to treat scores of wounded from the attack. The Nigeria Medical Association directed all available doctors in the region to help. Some of the wounded were in a “very bad state” and needed surgery, according to a doctor there who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to journalists.

Bishop Jude Arogundade said some gunmen entered the church while others stayed outside to shoot anyone who fled. Steven Omotayo, who lives nearby, heard the gunshots and rushed to the scene. “I saw a lot of dead bodies — both young and old, even children,” he said. “The people came in and started shooting from the gate.” He said the church has three entrances and the main entrance was said to have been locked, making it difficult for many to escape. “They were just shooting. OWO (NIGERIA), JUN 6 (AP): The gunmen who killed 50 people at a Catholic church in southwestern Nigeria opened fire on worshippers both inside and outside the building in a coordinated attack before escaping the scene, authorities and witnesses said Monday. Although Nigerian security forces have not yet identified who carried out Sunday’s attack on St. Francis Church in the town of Owo in relatively peaceful Ondo state, analysts suggested they came from elsewhere in the West African nation, which is plagued by violence from various armed groups, kidnappers and extremists. No one has claimed responsibility for the church killings, in which children were among the dead and the gunmen used some kind of explosive. “The attack is undoubtedly terrorist in nature, and the scale and brutality suggests it was carefully planned rather than impulsive,” said Eric Humphery-Smith, senior Africa analyst at Verisk Maplecroft risk intelligence company.

KYIV, JUN 6 (AP): Russia has begun turning over the bodies of Ukrainian fighters killed at the Azovstal steelworks, the fortress-like plant in the destroyed city of Mariupol where their last-ditch stand became a symbol of resistance against Moscow’s invasion. Dozens of fighters’ bodies recovered from the bombed-out mill’s now Russian-occupied r uins have been transferred to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, where DNA testing is underway to identify the remains, said Maksym Zhorin, a military commander and former leader of the Azov Regiment. The Azov Regiment was among the Ukrainian units that defended the factory for nearly three months before surrendering. It isn’t clear how many bodies might still remain at the plant, which was relentlessly pounded by surrounding Russian forces from the air and sea. The fighters’ dogged defense of the steel

What Air Conditioning Does to Your Body
Affects Indoor Air If you work in an air-conditioned building with poor ventilation, it can raise your risk of “sick building syndrome.” Symptoms include headaches, dry cough, dizziness and nausea, trouble concentrating, fatigue, and sensitivity to odors. Forced indoor air may also slightly raise your risk of COVID-19. But the CDC says the risk is small. Lower it even more with regular filter changes, opening windows, and covering coughs and sneezes. Dehydrates You Air conditioners suck moisture out of a room to bring down the humidity and cool it off. This can pull water from your skin, drying it -- and you -- out. Dries Out Eyes The lack of humidity in air-conditioned spaces can dry your eyes. This can make them irritated and itchy and may even make your vision blurry. Boosts Metabolism Studies show more time in cold weather may help you lose weight. Your body may develop a greater amount of healthy, energy-burning “brown fat” as it deals with more frigid air. Air conditioning in hot weather can help keep you in a cool state, but you’ll also have to lower your indoor temps in the winter to see a real benefit. Helps You Think A 2018 Harvard study showed that students who lived in dorms without A/C during hot summer months did worse on cognitive tests than those who had cool central air. Irritates Airways Studies show that people who work in air-conditioned buildings have more respiratory problems (irritated nasal passages, trouble breathing) than people who work in buildings with natural ventilation. If you spend time in indoor spaces with HVAC systems that are dirty or not well-maintained, you’re more likely to have headaches or even migraines. In one study, 8% of people who work in unhealthy indoor air environments had headaches 1-3 days a month, and 8% had daily headaches. Lowers Your Heat Tolerance Scientists have coined the term “adaptive comfort model” to describe why spending more time in air conditioning makes it harder to deal with hot temperatures. Your ideal temperature depends in part on whatever temperature you’ve recently been exposed to. The more you hang out in spaces pumped full of A/C, the less comfortable heat and humidity will feel.
Pollutes the Outside Air Older A/C units can release CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons). This is a refrigerant that can harm the ozone layer, heating up the Earth. The U.S. Clean Air Act began phasing these coolants out in the ‘90s, but there are still many in use across the globe. Ramps Up Allergies If you keep your A/C clean, it can help tame allergies. But an HVAC system can quickly become a home for microbial allergens. Be sure you have your system inspected regularly and keep it well-maintained so you don’t add to your allergy issues. Helps You Sleep
Experts say sleeping in a room that’s between 60-67 degrees is ideal for the best rest. This is because your body cools down as part of a natural sleep cycle, so a cool room helps that happen. Sometimes A/C is the tool you need to get your sleep space to the right temp. Saves Lives During Heatwaves Air conditioning may come with some negative effects, but there’s no doubt it can be lifesaving when temperatures soar. Once your body temperature goes above 102 degrees, you’re at risk of heat exhaustion -- nausea, cramps, dizziness, feeling faint -- and if you continue to heat up, you could get heat stroke.

Messi scores 5 as Argentina thrash Estonia
Lionel Messi celebrates scoring his hattrick. (AP)
M A D R I D, J U N 6 (AGENCIES): Lionel Messi scored all five of Argentina’s goals as they continued their fine form by thrashing Estonia in a friendly in Pamplona, Spain. Messi provided two assists in that game and he was once again in vintage form. He opened the scoring with a penalty and his fourth moved him above Ferenc Puskas who scored 84 goals for Hungary. M e s s i i s n ow t h e fourth highest-scorer in m e n’ s i n t e r n a t i o n a l
f o o t b a l l , b e h i n d o n ly Malaysia’s Mokhtar Dahari (89), Iran’s Ali Daei (109) and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo (117). M e s s i ’s g o a l s i n Pamplona demonstrated his vast array of skills. He put Lionel Scaloni’s team ahead with a calm penalty after eight minutes, then doubled the lead with a powerful side-footed effort into the roof of the net from a tight angle. His third was a predatory finish, showing his trademark precision to direct Nahuel Molina’s
right-wing cross into the bottom corner from 12 yards. His four th owed much to his alertness. As other players stopped and anticipated a free-kick award that never came, Messi picked up a loose ball, drove into the box, produced a dummy which left the Estonia keeper and a defender lying on the ground and rolled the ball into the empty net. He concluded his remarkable performance when he was again quickest to react to a loose ball and slotted in a low finish from next to the penalty spot with 14 minutes remaining.

Chess: Anand wins over world Wales beat Ukraine to qualify for FIFA WC Norway champion Carlsen; leads standings
LO N D O N, J U N 6 (REUTERS): Wales ended its 64-year wait for a place in the World Cup finals as it beat Ukraine 1-0 on Sunday to end the war-torn nation’s hopes of reaching Qatar. An own goal from Ukraine winger Andriy Yarmolenko, who headed a Gareth Bale free-kick into his own net, decided the contest. It was a cruel way for Ukraine’s qualification effort to end with Olexandr Petrakov’s side, which beat Scotland in the playoff semifinal, again showing a level of football which would have certainly merited a place in November’s 32team tournament. With half the team not having played competitive club football since the Russian invasion in February and with their nation’s tragedy never far from their minds, Ukraine deserves huge credit for coming so close to making the finals for the second time in its country’s history as an independent nation. There were emotional scenes at the end of the game as Ukraine’s d i s a p p o i n t e d p l ay e r s
Wales will now play at the World Cup for the first time since 1958 after winning play-off 1-0
showed their appreciation to their more than 2,000 supporters at the Cardiff City Stadium. They were then joined by the Wales players who before undertaking their own lap of honour also saluted the Ukrainian fans. T h e h o m e c r owd created a rousing
atmosphere before the match with an outstanding rendition of their national anthem but despite the loud and passionate atmosphere, Ukraine was on top from the outset. Wales keeper Wayne Hennessey was busy in the opening half making three vital saves to keep the score
level. Oleksandr Zinchenko had the ball in the net, from a quickly taken freekick but Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz had not blown his whistle and the effort was ruled out. Hennessey did well to deny Roman Yaremchuk after he found himself
clear on goal and then the Wales keeper was alert to get down to a dangerous Zinchenko drive and then to smother the ball at the feet of Viktor Tsygankov. It was against the run of play then when Wales grabbed the lead in the 34th minute, Bale fired a low free-kick from 25 metres out and Yarmolenko’s stooping, attempted header clear, flew into the net past the helpless Georgiy Bushchan. Aaron Ramsey missed a great chance to double Wales’ lead after the break, side-footing wide from a great position and then Neco Williams drilled a well-struck shot against the post. But Wales, who last appeared in the World Cup finals in 1958, had Hennessey to thank again as he pulled off a fine onehanded save from substitute Artem Dovbyk’s powerful header, six minutes from the end. The crowd rightly sang Hennessey’s name in the final minutes, the first of many songs that are sure to be sung long into the Welsh night.
S T AVA N G E R , J U N 6 (PTI): Indian ace Viswanathan Anand returned to winning ways, upstaging world No.1 Magnus Carlsen in the fifth round of the Classical section early on Monday in the Norway Chess tournament to climb to the top spot. After defeating the Norwegian superstar in the Blitz event that preceded the Classical section, Anand claimed the victory in a thrilling Armageddon (sudden death game) after the regular match ended in a 40-move draw. In the Armageddon, the 52-year old Anand recreated magic of old when he stunned Carlsen to post a win in 50 moves. With 10 points in his kitty, the Indian GM leads the field with four more rounds to go in the prestigious tournament which features some of the best players in the sport. Anand had started the Classical section with three straight wins, beating Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France), Veselin Topalov

(Bulgaria) and Hao Wang (China) before American Wesley So ended his streak in the fourth round. Carlsen lies in second spot with 9.5 points despite the loss to his long-time rival. So, who won the Blitz section earlier, shares third place with Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan) on 8.5 points. In the fifth round, So went down to Mamedyarov via Armageddon. T h e r e we r e w i n s for Anish Giri (the
Netherlands) and Norway’s Aryan Tari over Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan) and Hao Wang respectively in the fifth round. Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave won the sudden death game against veteran Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) in the other match to improve his score to 7 points. In the ongoing Norway Chess tournament, the players take part in an Armageddon (sudden death) in case of a draw in the classical game.
Tendulkar’s all-time Test record of most runs within Root’s reach: Mark Taylor NBA Finals: Warriors thumps LO N D O N, J U N 6 (IANS): Former Australia s k i p p e r M a r k Tay l o r h a s t i p p e d E n g l a n d ’s charismatic cricketer Joe Root to surpass Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most runs in Test match history. Root, who handed over England’s Test captaincy reins to all-rounder Ben Sachin Tendulkar Joe Root Stokes to concentrate on his batting, scored a guide the home team to the Kane Williamson-led fine unbeaten century to a five-wicket win against New Zealand at Lord’s on
Sunday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. In guiding England to a morale-boosting win, Root surpassed the 10,000run mark to become just the 14th cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs. Root has a total of 10,015 Test runs and is 5,906 behind Tendulkar, who notched up 15,921 in a career spanning 200 Tests. Australian legend Taylor felt that at 31, Root
has many more years of Test cricket left in him, adding that Tendulkar’s record was “very achievable”. “Root has minimum five years left in him, so I think Tendulkar’s record is very achievable,” opined Taylor on Sky Sports. “Root is batting as well as I have ever seen him bat over the last 18 months to two years. He is in the prime of his career, so there is 15,000 runs-plus for him
if he stays healthy,” added Taylor. England great Alastair Cook was also all praise for the former Test skipper, saying on BBC Test Match Special, “I just love (Root’s) batting.” Root is only the second cricketer from his country to have reached 10,000 Test runs after Cook, who quit international cricket in 2018, having scored 12,472 runs.
Celtics 107-88 in Game 2
N E W YO R K , J U N 6 (AGENCIES): Golden State Warriors, after losing game one, came back with intent to hammer Boston Celtics 107-88 in game two to level the series in California on Sunday. A dominant display right from the end of first quarter put Warriors in a commanding position throughout the game. Celtics started Sunday’s
tie right where they left off at the end of Game One, using their superior size to frustrate Warriors shooters and swishing threes from all over the floor but it was all Warriors the rest of the way as the Celtics struggled against the more tenacious Warriors defense. Stephen Curry picked up 29 points and Jordan Poole added 17 more to help Warriors seal a comfortable win.
