NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (AGENCIES): The Delta outbreak is going to get much worse, Michael Osterholm, an epidemiologist who leads the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota has warned, Times of India cited a report by the Newsweek. “The number of intensive-care beds needed could be higher than any time we’ve seen,” Osterholm has been quoted as saying. Delta, the variant first identified in India in December, spreads faster than any previous strain of SARSCoV-2, as the Covid-19 virus is officially named. The world is in a very “dangerous period” of the Covid-19 pandemic compounded by more transmissible variants like Delta, which is continuing to evolve and mutate, World Health Organization director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has recently warned. SARS-CoV-2 does not have a lot of genetic material to scramble compared with most organisms--about 15 genes, versus about 3,000 genes in an E. coli bacterium, the stomach bug, and about 20,000 in a human cell. Covid-19 has genetic checking mechanisms that

make it reasonably adept at avoiding replication mistakes compared to most viruses. Its mutation rate is on the lower side-- about one mutation for every 10 replications, or around a fifth of the flu’s mutation rate and a tenth of HIV’s. However, a single infected person might carry 10 billion copies of the virus, enough to produce billions of mutated viruses every day,

the Newsweek report has said. Every million or trillion times, a random mutation confers some potentially dangerous new characteristic, the article said. Much of what makes the virus dangerous has to do with the so-called spike proteins that protrude from its surface and enable the virus to latch onto and penetrate human cells. So far, most mutations represent tweaks to these
spikes, which means it only takes a minimal change within any of the few viral genes that control the spikes to create a newly threatening mutation. However, even when a virus mutation sharpens its ability to wreak havoc, it does not mean a dangerous new variant has emerged. The Newsweek has reported that to become a significant variant, a mutated virus has to out-replicate the far more numerous copies of the virus that already predominate in the population, and to do that it needs features that give it big advantages. The chances that a virus in the population will produce a much more dangerous variant in the course of a year would normally be extremely low. But when billions of people are infected with billions of copies of a virus, all bets are off. ‘Living Covid mutation labs’: Due to Delta’s infectiousness, and the huge number of people whose refusal or inability to get vaccinated leaves them primed to become living Covid mutation labs, the conditions are ripe to produce yet more, potentially more dangerous, variants in the coming months, the Newsweek report said. Study finds mosquito population very high in Dimapur dist DIMAPUR, AUG 6 (NPN): Vector density or mosquito population is very high in Dimapur district with high risk of transmission in all localities. In a press note, joint director & SPO, NVBDCP Dr Neisakho Kere said that this was found during an entomological study on dengue vector density conducted by State National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) in various localities of Dimapur, Kohima, Wokha and Mokokchung during the anti-dengue month, which is observed every year in the month of July.
State logs 110 fresh cases, 1 Covid death
And as mosquitoes thrive in areas with standing water, the current monsoon rains are adding to the growing population, the study found.
Thus, the programme appealed to people all over the State to remove stagnant water from all containers around their houses like flower pot
bases, empty vessels, coolers, tyres, buckets, etc, once a week because mosquitoes breed in stagnant water and their eggs hatch in a week. It also urged al to keep all waterfilled vessels and tanks tightly covered and throw out any rubbish lying around like plastic cups, old containers, tyres, coconut shells, etc, and check around the compound every week. Further, appealing to everyone to sleep under mosquito nets during day and night, especially pregnant women and children, besides to immediately consult a doctor in case of high fever.

rie reiterated that the Pan Naga Hoho concept was rejected by the NPCC and other stakeholders. He said NPCC did not agree to a “Pan Naga Hoho without integration of land”. He slammed chief minister Neiphiu Rio for “trying to bring a dead issue to life but he is not Jesus”. Therie opined that there was “no more emotion, sensation or sentiment of relationships” since the land, marked with thousands of graves over the years, is “occupied by widows and orphans.” “The blood has not dried on the hands of killers” he said as “pain and sufferings continue to haunt the inherent dwellers”. He said that “integration within states is not acceptable anymore” though “as blood brothers, we will continue to integrate at the national level.”He concluded
KOHIMA, AUG 6 (NPN): Despite a proposal for an all-party government, NPF members continued to play the role of opposition during the eighth session of 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) that concluded on Thursday. Both ruling and opposition came together on common issues like Naga political issue and AssamNagaland border row for which unanimous resolutions were adopted. During
the question hour on August 3, NPF legislator Imkong L Imchen asked the treasury benches to take every question asked, authenticate facts and figures from the departments and respond accordingly with all transparency, instead of giving half-baked information. Opposition MLA Azo admitted that the proposal for an all-party government had put the opposition members in an embarrassing situation as they could not target the government on various issues. Azo emphasised that
the negotiating groups must come to an understanding and see the offer of the Centre, and whichever group that does not sign the agreement can abrogate the ceasefire and go back to their camps. It was also learnt that one of the members from Core Committee on Naga Political Issue echoed the same sentiment during a meeting with NSCN (I-M) delegation at Dimapur. Azo expressed displeasure over the thin attendance of bureaucrats-- HoDs and AHoDs at the Assembly. He
that “the state assembly’s love is all for NSCN (IM)” and that members were “speaking more than NSCN (I-M)”. He said the members “don’t represent their own home stakeholders (also) do not represent the WC of NNPGs” and neither do they have any respect or recognition for tribal hohos or ANGBF (GBs federation). Further, he said the members had “completely ignored Congress, which is the main opposition party in Parliament”. Therie also accused the members of having no respect for the head of state- the Governor of Nagaland and Interlocutorand even the prime minister, “ who has declared that the Naga issue has been resolved.” On solution in Manipur, Therie said “we are sorry that NSCN (I-M) Manipur Nagas have no solution
for them in their own land”. He advised “you have to win the hearts of your people. They should accept you as brothers as we do to you here. We cannot win their hearts and love for you, nor can the GoI.” Therie hit out at the “hon’ble members” who he said consider Nagaland voters as materials to be bought with money. He said the house also “thinks NSCN (IM) can rescue them in election only” as this had happened in the past and may happen again adding “this is called, perishing together like fools”. Looking at the matter from electoral politics, Therie said whether right or wrong, Hindus vote Hindutva and also whether right or wrong, even Christians voted for Hindutva. He said while NBCC had declared Nagaland for Christ, shouldn’t Christians vote for Christ?

Gov, CM, Dy.CM extend greetings D I M A P U R , AU G 6 (NPN): Nagaland governor RN Ravi, chief minister Neiphiu Rio and deputy CM Y Patton extended greetings to the members of the Khiamniungan community on the occasion of Biam festival. In his message, Ravi said that the traditional rituals performed during the festival reflected the harmonious coexistence of the community with the environment. Ravi urged the community members specially the youth to imbibe and carry forward the cul-
tural values of the festival. Taking to twitter, the chief minister prayed that “God Almighty answer our prayers for a good harvest and bless us in every aspect of our lives.” Extending greetings to the Khiamniungan and Yimchunger communities on the occasion of Biam and Metemneo festivals, Patton said that festivals were inherent part of every Naga community and the celebrations were “a way of remembering our ancestors who left behind great legacy.”

"What we did is reconciliation of ruling and opposition. It means we've forgiven the past and looking forward."
DIMAPUR, AUG 6 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K. Therie has made a scathing attack on speeches of legislators at the 8th session of the 13th NLA, which concluded with reaffirmation of the 5-point resolution earlier adopted by the Core Committee for Naga Political Issue on July 9, 2021. In the light of the discussions on the floor of the house, Therie said the objective behind all these was to “delay the implementation of political solution, which is kept in cold storage”. Turning on the heat on the members, he said “ they are weeping for Manipur Nagas. Their hearts are burning with no solution for them. The entire assembly discussion on political issue was for NSCN (I-M).” On chief minister Neiphiu Rio’s speech, The-
said their presence was important as they were the ones to implement government policies and programmes. The leader of the house, Neiphiu Rio, supported the MLA on this and asked the HoDs present at the Assembly to convene a meeting to ensure that the officers attend sessions in future. Yitachu, NPF legislator, remarked that he personally felt as an act of cowardice the decision on joining the ruling coalition for an all-party government. However, for Naga political
issues, he assured that NPF would always do whatever was required and no matter what it would cost the party. During discussion on Naga issue, Azo outpoured his frustration stating that it was his 19th year sitting as a legislator and fed up with the words “pave the way”. He remarked that the members could no longer lie to the people of assuring to bring settlement. He cautioned the members that people were cleverer than their elected representatives and watching them.

Irregular deduction `7.48 cr VAT from Central funds: CAG
DIMAPUR, AUG 6 (NPN): Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India in its report General, Economic and Revenue Sectors for the year ended 31 March 2019, tabled in the recently concluded Assembly session, pointed out that the Finance department made an irregular deduction of VAT and de-partmental charges of Rs. 7.48 crore from the Central funds received. Upon examination of records, CAG said that the Finance department deducted Rs. 3.17 crore as VAT [Rs.2.77 crore (87.38%) was deducted from CSS grants] at the time of drawal of funds, the VAT deduction ranging from 4.24 per cent to 7.5 per cent on the total grants, instead of deducting the same from the contractor’s bills. It said that the deduction was irregular and also diluted the quantum of funds available to the State for programme implementation under the Scheme. CAG also observed that irregular deduction of VAT of Rs. 45 lakh was made from funds available under NLCPR for construc-tion of housing units for judicial officers.
CAG said that the department in reply (June 2020) stated that VAT deductions were made as per the directives of Finance department at prevailing rates notified by Government and the matter regarding deduction of VAT at source instead of deducting from the contractor’s bills will be reviewed with the Finance depar tment. CAG said that the issue was reported (Octo-ber 2020) to Finance department, to ascertain the deduction of VAT at source. In reply, Finance department stated (November 2020) that matter will be examined as and when department of Justice and Law would forward the case for review. Similarly, CAG also obser ved that irregular deduction of departmental charges amounting to Rs.5.48 crore was made at source [Rs.4.71 crore (86 per cent) was deducted from the CSS grants]. It would not be out of place to mention here that despite this irregular deduction being point-ed out previously by the C&AG, the same irregularity continued. (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C

ate geological activities in the state. He further stated that the department has been generating substantial revenues through implementation of coal policy and minor mineral concession rules. DIMAPUR: Niki Sumiled NSCN (K) has sharply reacted to the alleged conduct of “unauthorized raids and illegal detention” of its members by Indian security forces, which it claimed was “repeatedly threatening the Naga people’s desire for peace”. The group through its MIP questioned whether “such illegalities are being done under the directive of the GoI” or whether the “GoI lost control of its security forces”. MIP alleged that security forces were “acting independently of all Indian government institutions”. It also said that field commanders were “acting more like warlords rather than a respectable and disciplined force of a civilized nation.” MIP said peace that has been earnestly sought by all sections of Naga society was being “slowly eroded and shred to pieces by the security forces”. The group cautioned that its commitment to peace and
tolerance “should not be misconstrued as a sign of docility.” According to MIP, the security forces have made “unauthorized arrest” of its members during the past few months including 20 in Dimapur, eight in Kohima, seven in Peren, six in Phek, six in Tuensang, two in Mon and one in Zunheboto. Further, MIP accused the security forces of violating the sanctity of the CFSB office, approved by Ministry of Home Affairs, on many occasions. It said that “physical torture and detention of CFSB members cannot be left unmentioned.” While conveying its “unwavering commitment to peace”, the group, however, cautioned that in the event of any untoward incident, which hampered the peace process, the responsibility would “solely lie with GoI.” Reacts to report: Reacting to news items “security forces nab 4 cadres of Nikki group in Kohima”

No vehicle entering Mizoram despite withdrawal of travel advisory: Mizoram CS
AIZAWL, AUG 6 (PTI): The “unofficial” economic blockade on National Highway-306, allegedly imposed by certain groups in Assam’s Cachar district, entered its 12th day on Friday, a top official in Mizoram said. Chief Secretary LalnunmawiaChuaungo told reporters here that no vehicle has made its way to the state from Assam, despite the withdrawal of the travel advisory issued by the HimantaBiswaSarma government. A festering border dispute between the two northeastern states had triggered a bloody conflict on July 26, leading to the death of seven people -- six Assam Police personnel and a civilian. The Assam government had subsequently issued an advisory asking people to avoid travelling to Mizoram. It was revoked on Thursday following talks between the two sides. Chuaungo said the r uling dispensation in Mizoram is in “constant touch” with the Assam
government, which has promised to take necessary steps for resumption of traffic movement via NH-306. “It is unfortunate that no vehicle carrying goods or passengers is entering Mizoram from Assam, despite the withdrawal of the travel advisory. The government is in constant touch with the Centre and Assam. I have also spoken with the Assam chief secretary, who assured us that measures will be taken to clear the road,” he said. Officials in Mizoram alleged that railways tracks linked to the state were damaged in at least three places in Assam’s Hailakandi district. The “unofficial” blockade has choked all supplies, including medical consignments and COVID-19 equipment, they added. Lalruatkima, the information and public relations minister in Mizoram, further said that more than 30 people, including non-tribals, are currently stranded in Silchar’s Mizoram house due to the blockade. Cachar SP Ramandeep Kaur, when contacted, told PTI over phone that the Assam government had been encouraging people to travel to Mizoram but many were reluctant “fearing backlash”. “Even before the withdrawal of the advisory, the government encouraged people to travel to Mizoram. It seems some of them are reluctant as they fear being attacked,” she stated. Kaur also said that two vehicles were vandalised by unidentified men somewhere between Silchar and Lailapur when they had tried to move towards Mizoram on Thursday. A probe has been launched into the incident, she added. The Mizoram and Assam governments had on Thursday agreed to find a “lasting solution” to the century-old boundary dispute and take measures, including resumption of interstate vehicular movement, to de-escalate tension between the two sides.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, AUGUST 7, 2021
to judges: Chief Justice says Oppn leaders support farmers, join Kisan Sansad Threat CBI, IB not helping judicial officers
NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (PTI): Several leaders of opposition parties, including former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, on Friday extended their solidarity to protesting farmers and joined their Kisan Sansad at the Jantar Mantar here, saying the three “black” agri laws will have to be withdrawn. Leaders of 14 opposition parties met at Parliament House and then reached the nearby Jantar Mantar to participate in the Kisan Sansad, which began on July 22 to mark over seven months of the farmers’ protests at Delhi’s border points against the laws. The leaders neither spoke from the podium of the Kisan Sansad (farmers’ parliament) nor were they seated on the dais. “Today all opposition parties together decided to support the farmers and demand the withdrawal of the three farm laws,” Gandhi told reporters.

“We want to give our entire support to all the farmers of the country,” he said. The three farm laws were enacted in September last year, following which farmers, mainly from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, are protesting at Delhi border points since November. “It will not work with a discussion on the farm laws and these black laws
will have to be withdrawn,” Gandhi said, when asked that the government says it is ready to hold talks with farmers. He also alleged that the government is not allowing the opposition to raise the Pegasus snooping issue in Parliament. “You know what is happening in Parliament. We want to discuss the Pegasus (snooping) issue and they are not allowing
it to happen. (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi has got into every telephone,” he said. Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and several other Congress leaders besides members from other opposition parties were present at the meeting at Parliament House. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, RJD leader Manoj Kumar Jha, CPI (M) leader Elamaram Kareem, CPI leader Binoy Viswam, IUML leader Mohammed Bashir and DMK leader Tiruchi Siva were among those present at Jantar Mantar. AAP and TMC leaders were not present at the Kisan Sansad site. “The Opposition leaders’ meeting decided to hold their protest at Jantar Mantar at 1 pm and sit with the protesting farmers,” a senior leader told PTI earlier. The leaders left Parliament at 12.30 pm in a
bus to reach Jantar Mantar. Farmer groups have alleged these three agri laws will end the mandi and MSP procurement systems and leave the farmers at the mercy of big corporates, even as the government has rejected these apprehensions as misplaced. They are protesting against the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. Leaders of several parties including the Congress, DMK, TMC, NCP, Shiv Sena, RJD, SP, CPI(M), AAP, CPI, IUML, RSP, NC and LJD attended the opposition meeting in the morning. The opposition leaders also discussed their floor strategy in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha of Parliament during the meeting.
NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (IANS): Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana on Friday said that a new trend has developed in the country to malign the judges, if people do not get orders of their choice, and when judges complain to the CBI and the IB, they also do not help. “New trend developed in the country. If an adverse order is passed, then judiciary is maligned... No freedom given to judges. If judges complain to the IB and the CBI, they are not helping the judiciary at all. This is a serious matter. I am saying it with a sense of responsibility,” he said. The bench, which also comprised Justice Surya Kant, said that in some cases where gangsters and high-profile accused are involved, they attempt to intimate judges physically and mentally, and some people, who do not get orders of their choice, circulate messages on What-
N.V. Ramana sApp and other social media platforms with an intent to malign judges. The Chief Justice added that it is sad that the Central Bureau of Investigation has done nothing. “No change in CBI attitude. We are sorry to observe that.” The top court made these strong observations while hearing a suo motu case in connection with the mowing down of Dhanbad Additional District Judge Uttam Anand by an autorickshaw and sought a status report on the investigation from the Jharkhand govern-
ment through the Chief Secretary and the DGP within a week. The Chief Justice noted that the Jharkhand government has done nothing in connection with the security of judicial officers, against the backdrop of the presence of coal mafia in the state and pointed out that Anand was killed nearby his colony. Attorney General K.K. Venugopal said that in criminal cases, the judges are vulnerable and there should be a body to assess such situations. “I have collected news reports on attack on judges inside and outside the court and some measures need to be taken to stop these incidents,” he added. As the Jharkhand government said it had handed over the case to the CBI for further investigation and it will provide full cooperation to the investigating agency, the CJI said: “So, you washed up your hands.”
Rajya Sabha adjourned for the LS adjourned for the day amid protest; retrospective tax bill passed day amid opposition protests NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (PTI): The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Friday after opposition members continued to create uproar over the Pegasus snooping row and farmers’ issues. The upper house witnessed one adjournment a few minutes after it met for the day and was then adjourned for the day a few minutes after it met again at 12 PM. The Congress, TMC and other members continued to raise slogans in the well soon after it met for Question Hour. Surendra Singh Nagar, who was in the chair, announced that the meeting of the business advisory committee of Rajya Sabha
would be prepped to 12.15 PM on the request of some opposition parties. It was to be held at 1.10 PM earlier. The chair continued with the Question Hour amid the din but adjourned the House for the day after opposition members continued to create noisy scenes by raising slogans in the well. The House will now meet at 11 AM on Monday, August 9, 2021. Earlier soon after the House met for the day, it was adjourned within minutes after the laying of papers, as opposition members stormed the well and started raising slogans against the government. Deputy chairman Harivansh first urged members to allow the House to
function but adjourned the House till 12 PM amid the din. Earlier when the House met, Harnath Singh Yadav (BJP) demanded the government restore the medium of education in mother tongue, while Ram Nath Thakur (JDU) urged the government to fill up vacancies of judges in the Supreme Court. Sasmit Patra (BJD) sought the ratio of CentreState assistance be changed from 60:40 to 90:10 for development of Odisha keeping in mind the state always gets affected by floods and other natural disasters. Patra even urged the government to declare Odisha as a ‘special focus state of infrastructure development.
NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (PTI): Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day shortly after noon on Friday after passage of two bills, including the one which proposes to end a controversial retrospective tax policy, amid protests by Opposition members over Pegasus and other issues. As the House convened for the day at 11 am, Speaker Om Birla took up the Question Hour. However, the members resorted to sloganeering over Pegasus snooping controversy and farm laws. As the protests continued, the Speaker urged the agitating members to go back to their seats. The proceedings lasted for around 15 minutes after which Birla adjourned the House till noon.
When the House resumed at noon, Rajendra Agrawal, who was in the chair, allowed discussions on ‘The Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021’, which proposed amendments to the Income Tax and Finance Act 2012 to make it clear that no tax demand will be raised for any indirect transfer of Indian assets if the transaction was undertaken prior to May 28, 2012. After a brief statement by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and clause-wise consideration of the bill, it was passed by voice vote. Similarly, another bill ‘The Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2021’, to set up a central university in Ladakh was passed by the House following a

ndia is a sports sleeping giant, with a population of over 130 crore but placed at the bottom rank among competing nations. India definitely has the potential to be among the top ten sports powerhouse of the world if only the government has the political will to bring drastic changes. This year, India has sent its largest ever contingent—120 athletes, who are competing in 85 medal events. However, India has been there before- winning hardly a handful of medals. In 2016, India sent 117 players to Rio, pinning hopes on winning between 10 and 14 medals but clinching just two. This time, till Friday, India won two silver and three bronze medals, taking its tally to five. India had expected to win gold medals in women’s badminton, women’s hockey, women’s weight lifting, archery, boxing, wrestling, shooting etc but one by one the hopes fell. The two silver medals won by India came from Manipur’s Mirabai Chanu(women’s weightlifting) and Ravi Kumar Dahiya( men’s wrestling). India won its three bronze medals from P.V.Sindhu(badminton), Assam’s Lovlina Borgohain (women’s boxing) and men’s hockey. The five medals won by India so far, placed it at 66 position out of 83 countries vying for medals at the Tokyo Olympics. India has the worst population to medals ratio at the Olympics. Since its first appearance at the summer Olympic Games in 1900, India has managed to score just 30 medals, including two silvers in Tokyo. It is not understood why the government fails to replicate the BCCI strategy of promoting cricket. Unfortunately, unlike in Britain where cricket enjoys high popularity but other sports have been given equal focus, it is not so in India. The government has gone gaga on cricket with so much attention and efforts to build better infrastructure for producing world-class cricketers but it forgot that there are other sports in the country too. How India treats its champions is tragic as teams and individuals who toiled hard with blood, sweat and sometimes tears to make the country proud, have been abandoned to their fate. There are at least 12 well known Indian Olympic medal winners who had to beg and borrow in their last days. Shanta Devi( Kabaddi player) has been forced to sell vegetables at Jamshedpur. Footballer and Arjuna awardee, Mohd.Yousuf Khan who led India in winning the 1962 Asian Games football died of penury. Sarwan Singh who represented the country in the 1954 Asian Games in the 110 meter hurdles event, where he won a gold medal; had to sell his medal to survived and died a pauper. Famous India hockey player, Major Dhyanchand is remembered as a magician of Indian Hockey. With Dhyanchand’s goal-scoring feats, British India won Olympic Gold medals in 1928,1932 and 1936. He was awarded with the nation’s third highest civilian honour of Padma Bhushan in 1956 but died penniless in 1979. Others who brought sporting glory to India also faced similar fates such as- world carrom champion Maria Irudayam ; 1958 Asian Games steeplechase winner Paan Singh Tomar; hockey goalkeeper Shankar Laxman who played for India to win the 1956 and 1958 Olympic medals and died in poverty. Doughty wrestler Khashaba Dadasahed Jadhav who won Bronze medal at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He was even denied pension and later died in a road accident. If such is the way in which the nation treats those who bring sports glory, then it does very little to inspire development of sports.
DailyDevotion The Cross in Prayer
In that day you will ask in My name… —John 16:26
We too often think of the Cross of Christ as something we have to get through, yet we get through for the purpose of getting into it. The Cross represents only one thing for us— complete, entire, absolute identification with the Lord Jesus Christ— and there is nothing in which this identification is more real to us than in prayer. “Your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him” (Matthew 6:8). Then why should we ask? The point of prayer is not to get answers from God, but to have perfect and complete oneness with Him. If we pray only because we want answers, we will become irritated and angry with God. We receive an answer every time we pray, but it does not always come in the way we expect, and our spiritual irritation shows our refusal to identify ourselves truly with our Lord in prayer. We are not here to prove that God answers prayer, but to be living trophies of God’s grace. “…I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; for the Father Himself loves you…” (John 16:26-27). Have you reached such a level of intimacy with God that the only thing that can account for your prayer life is that it has become one with the prayer life of Jesus Christ? Has our Lord exchanged your life with His vital life? If so, then “in that day” you will be so closely identified with Jesus that there will be no distinction. When prayer seems to be unanswered, beware of trying to place the blame on someone else. That is always a trap of Satan. When you seem to have no answer, there is always a reason— God uses these times to give you deep personal instruction, and it is not for anyone else but you.

Islamabad’s hard-won gains could be lost A
s concern grows in Pakistan about the fallout of the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, protracted fighting that morphs into civil war will pose severe dilemmas and multiple challenges for the country. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan reiterated this fear in a recent interview with an American TV network when he said such an outcome would be the “worst-case scenario for the country”. Pakistan’s security is inextricably tied to Afghanistan. Prolonged strife in its neighbour will expose Pakistan to security threats that it has dealt with in the past at a heavy cost in lives and social and economic consequences. Threat to stability For over four decades Pakistan has borne the brunt of war, foreign military interventions and conflict in Afghanistan that produced grave repercussions for the country’s security, stability and economic development. The destabilising ramifications are too well known to bear repetition here. More turmoil on its western frontier would mean the country will have to simultaneously deal with internal, regional and international challenges that would flow from this outcome. In a back-to-the-future
scenario, Pakistan will be faced with a serious threat to its stability if civil war erupts in Afghanistan and spills over into its border areas. Pakistan has sought to mitigate this danger by fencing much of the border, sealing illegal crossing points, increasing border posts, strengthening the capacity of the Frontier Corps, upgrading the training of law-enforcement personnel, enhancing technical surveillance and stationing regular troops there. While these measures are necessary, they may not be sufficient to stop the determined from crossing over given the long border and the mountainous terrain and topography. Moreover, a chaotic situation across the border will provide fertile ground and more space to a host of militant groups to continue operating from there. The principal but not only threat is from the Tehriki-Taliban Pakistan (the Pakistani Taliban) whose 6,500 members are based in Afghanistan and launch cross-border attacks from there. Taliban in Pakistan A reunified Tehrik-iTaliban Pakistan has reinforced its capacity. The latest report of the United Nations’ sanctions monitoring team notes that “the

the sun. Integrated Farming System (IFS): Integrated Farming System is an interdependent, interrelated and often interlocking production system using a combination of few crops, animals and related subsidiary enterprises in such a way that maximize the utilization of nutrients of each system and minimize the negative effect of these enterprises on environment. The interrelated, inter-dependent-interlocking nature this farming system involves the utilization of primary produce and secondary produce of one system as basic input of the other system, thus making them mutually integrated as one whole unit. Integration provides higher yields, less vulnerability and more financial gain, compared to that in the use of monocultures or non-integrated livestock farming. In integrated farming there is better utilization of all available resources, thus helping the farm achieve higher economic viability.
The following are some combination of Integrated Farming System practices used particularly for hilly regions. Pig, Fish and Agriculture. Cattle, Fish and Agriculture. Chicken, Fish and Agriculture. It may be noted that, the manures generated from livestock contains substantial amount of nutrients and biomass which helps in rapid growth of Phytoplankton and Zooplankton and this serves as a source of nutrients for the fish. Further, indigestible feed ingredients present in livestock manures are consumed directly by the fish and occasionally, the bottom soil layer of the pond which is rich in biomass is applied in the field for agriculture farming. Superior breed: Genetically superior breed means superior in-terms of particular set of characteristics i.e. more heat/ cold tolerant, higher fertility rate and litter size, more resistant to disease, better feed conversion

dangerous”. Pakistani military officials have already warned of terrorist sleeper cells being galvanised if there is protracted fighting next door. In Balochistan, there could be a further rise in violent activity by revived dissidents and other groups orchestrated by hostile foreign intelligence agencies. Thus, Pakistan’s hardwon gains in its counterterrorism campaign could be upended. Prime Minister Khan said pointedly in the PBS interview that a civil war in Afghanistan would mean “terrorism in Pakistan”. Also, forces of extremism in the country will take heart and be emboldened by the Taliban’s military success. A civil war could also lead to a fresh refugee influx into Pakistan which has hosted three million Afghan refugees for decades now. Pakistani officials worry that fighting will force more Afghans to flee with estimates of new refugees ranging from 500,000 to 700,000. Apart from instituting more effective border controls the government is working on a plan to establish camps near the border to prevent refugees from entering the mainland. Whether the Iranian ‘model’ can work here is open to question especially
as tribes are so intertwined on both sides of the border. Using the nomenclature “externally displaced Afghans” to describe them could put at risk international assistance for these refugees as that depends on their refugee status. World Bank funding for refugees too could be in jeopardy. Regional security concerns Then there is the likely economic fallout that Pakistan also experienced in the past. Given how fragile and vulnerable the economy is the shock from a civil war next door and the threat of violence at home will jeopardise prospects of growth and investment. This will place Pakistan in a zone of instability which will dampen trade and investment badly needed to achieve economic growth targets. The recent past shows that Pakistan had to bear billions of dollars in economic losses in the aftermath of 9/11 when the “war on terror” spilt over into the country’s border areas and cities. Beyond this, a civil war can lead to a regional proxy war, as it did in the past, but with more damaging consequences and drawing in more countries that perceive threats to their security and are already beefing up their defences. It could turn out
to be fiercer than what followed the Russian military withdrawal in the 1990s as neighbours and near neighbours act to protect their interests. More regional states have security concerns now than was the case during Afghanistan’s previous bout of the civil war because of transnational armed groups and foreign terrorist fighters who operate from there. They include the Turkistan Islamic Party, Daesh, Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan and of course Al Qaeda. There are also fears of fighters in Syria relocating to the region. A proxy war could trigger a regional geopolitical crisis of uncertain proportions. All this may sound alarmist but it is predicated on a worst-case scenario of Afghanistan descending into chaos and civil war. This only underlines the urgency of regional and international diplomatic efforts to avert such an outcome. There is time yet for these efforts to make headway. Ultimately, however, it will be up to the Afghan parties to make the difficult compromises that can deliver peace to their long-suffering people. MaleehaLodhi, Dawn.com (As published by Scroll.in)
Economically viable Livestock Farming
ivestock rearing has been a fundamental activity producing various commodities in the state of Nagaland for ages. However, livestock rearing in the state is still failing to catch up with other activities. The same old practice is continuing for a very long time and it is yet to see a revolution, as a result many livestock systems currently practiced are not economically viable. The following are the few simple practices that can be done to make livestock farming economically viable. Location: The area should be easy to access, have adequate water supply and maximum exposure to the sun.It should be ata higher elevation than the surrounding area to offer good slope for drainage of wastes and avoid stagnation. Housing direction: The long axis of the house should be set in north-south direction as this position allows the house to acquire maximum benefits from

return of splinter groups to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan fold has increased its strength”. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan’s links continue with the Afghan Taliban, which are acknowledged by Pakistan’s security officials. Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan leader Noor WaliMehsud surfaced rece ntly to announce in a CNN interview that his militant group will continue its “war against Pakistan’s security forces” and its aim is to “take control of the border regions and make them independent”. A surge in violence in North and South Waziristan has led to rising casualties among Pakistani security personnel in recent months. Since May, there have been 167 terrorist incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, an ominous portent of what could lie ahead. Armed groups residing in Afghanistan would pose a threat to Pakistan with some making common cause with elements who were defeated but dispersed after a series of successful operations by security forces. The UN report says that “a significant part of the Al Qaeda leadership is based along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border” while ISIS-K or Daesh“remains active and

The whole bill is for the month June 2021 and mention of wrong reading case for June 2021 cannot be made out. It would appear that there is no mechanism within the department to supervise and cross check the bills before it is handed out to the customers resulting in consumers lodging complaints after complaints every month. As for public lighting in our colony, the less said the better as our complaints fall on deaf ears. I have also received several monthly bills whereby zero consumption is shown and minimum charges are realized from the customers. I just can’t understand how a customer can have zero reading in a month. The only answer is the meter reader does not do his duty. Now we pay the minimum charge for the zero reading, averaging about Rs 600/- per month and again when some units are shown consumed in the next month we again pay for that. Thereby we are charged for zero reading (where definitely some units must have been consumed) and for units consumed. Therefore consumers must realise that zero reading bills are a way to make us pay double. I would like a respond from the department concern. ratio (grow quicker) and higher quality produce. Hence, selection of the right superior breed leads to increased overall productivity and higher economic viability of the farm. Health management: When an animal is havingdisease the body is designed to partition nutrients towards those processes so that the immune system is effective as a result nutrient requirement can increase by about 60%. This will result in more input - less output scenario and lead to heavy loss of resources. Some simple and effective management practices to improve productivity and economic viability are as follows. Provide foot dip containing disinfectants at the entry of the farm. Regular cleaning and disinfecting of farm and farm premises. Keep animals suffering from contagious diseases in a separate house. Regular de-worming and
timely vaccination of animals. Identify abnormal behavior such as lameness, reluctance in taking food, abnormal breathing, fever etc and seek a Veterinarian’s help at the earliest. In case of outbreak of disease ban all visitors to the farm and consult a Veterinarian. Record keeping: It isan important activity required for increasing farm productivity after allthe ultimate profit or loss in a farm can only be found out by keeping proper records in the farm which includes data sheet of individual animal, total stock of animals, feed register, expenditure statement etc. It is felt that by following the few suggestions mentioned in this article, the people of Nagaland can substantially increase productivity, sustainability and economic viability of livestock farming. Pegasus spyware saga – UN roles
N
o preamble is needed. It’s a hot topic globally. Already France, Israel, and a few other nations have ordered for a probe. It’s not an issue of yesterday or last-year. It surfaced on and off during the last 5 years but there is no clarity. It’s not clear what the United Nations has on such a sensitive, in fact explosive topic — it’s a spyware akin to nuclear power — and needed some supervision/control by the UN. How can the UN keep track of such hi-tech spyware use/abuse? Nations have sovereignty to protect themselves from spies, terrorists, extremists, etc. This is the catch point. There has to be an apex global monitoring system — UN will fit in right to ensure that such hi-tech weapon grade spyware isn’t sold indiscriminately to all and sundry Agencies, even some dubious democracies for big bucks. Nations with tracks of human right violations/exploitation, suppression of dissent/ protest/activism can smell a mile away — so easy to spot. And other nations with decent tracks of human rights, etc. should also

From the meter reading shown at ‘A’ above, the present reading is going much below the previous reading. Further how the units consumed is calculated and shown is something which no one can make out. This is the competency of the Department. I am sure neither the officers nor the individual preparing the bill can explain how this was prepared. In the process, the consumers have to run around, spending time and energy to meet an officer, sometimes waiting for hours, to rectify the bills. Isn’t this harassment? Almost every month we had to go to the department for rectification. It is also learned that many consumers are found at the office every month seeking clarifications and rectifying their bills. As against ‘B’i.e public lighting, I lodged a written complain dated 16/05/21 mentioning that our colony is not getting public lighting though in all the bills we are being charged for the same. Sir,
On made-up auto fares
I would like to appeal to the concerned authority as a commuter to kindly look into the excessive fares that some auto drivers demand. Some of them come up with their own fares on the pretext of fuel hike (e.g., Rs. 150 from Duncan to Dobhinallah). I request the district administration to kindly come up with a fare chart for the convenience of both auto drivers and commuters so that the former would not come up with made-up fares. last year,” the Army said in a statement. “As per the agreement, both sides have ceased forward deployments in this area in a phased, coordinated and verified manner. The disengagement process was carried out over two days: August 4 and 5,” it said. The Army said the troops of both sides are now in their respective permanent bases. Both sides had carried out partial disengagement in Gogra as well as Hotsprings. However, the process was not completed following fresh skirmishes along the South bank of Pangong Tso areas. “All temporary structures and other allied infrastructure created in the area by both sides have been
‘India working to eliminate corruption in all possible forms’ NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (PTI): Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday told the eighth meeting of the Ministers of Justice of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states that it will be appropriate for India to continue to deal with legal assistance and legal relations on criminal and civil cases on bilateral basis. He also said that India has been working relentlessly to eliminate corruption in all possible forms. “The approach of the Indian government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is of zero tolerance to corruption and black money,” Rijiju asserted, according to a spokesperson of the Law Ministry. India, the minister said, has a sound legal framework backed by strong institutional mechanism to deal with corruption.
Rs. 63.34 cr disbursed for Kohima bypass package II Correspondent
KO H I M A , AU G 6 (NPN): State deputy chief minister, Y Patton, who also in charge of road and bridges, disclosed that there was an advance package of Rs. 93.15 crore for Kohima by-pass package-II. Responding to starred question raised by opposition member Kuzholuzo Nienu on the status of the road construction, Patton said that out of the total amount, Rs. 63.34 crore has been disbursed while Rs. 29.81 crore balance remained. Patton also said that 55-meter tunnel exca-
vation work from Western Portal has been completed so far. Azo raised concern over the utilisation of Rs. 93 crore for Kohima by-pass road package II. He, however, appreciated NHIDCL and said that the road development works were going on a war footing with quality control. He opined that the landowners should not become a hindrance to the road project. He also exuded confidence that state would be have good roads like any other state within two-three years.
dismantled and mutually verified. The landform in the area has been restored by both sides to the pre-standoff period,” the Army said. The disengagement process at Patrolling Point17A (PP 17A) took place around five months after the two sides carried out a similar exercise on the North and South bank areas of Pangong lake when they withdrew troops and weapons from the friction points. “This agreement ensures that the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in this area will be strictly observed and respected by both sides, and that there is no unilateral change in status quo,” the Army said. “With this, one more
sensitive area of face-off has been resolved. Both sides have expressed commitment to take the talks forward and resolve the remaining issues along the LAC in the Western Sector,” it said. The eastern Ladakh is referred to as Western Sector by the government. “The Indian Army along with ITBP is totally committed to ensure the sovereignty of the nation and maintain peace & tranquillity along the LAC in the Western Sector,” the Army said. With the completion of the disengagement in PP 17A, the focus now shifts to Gogra as well as Depsang and Demchok. Sources said both sides have created a buffer zone in PP-17 A where no patrolling will be carried out by both sides. In the 12th round of military talks, the two sides agreed to resolve the pending issues at the remaining friction points in an “expeditious” manner. A joint statement released after the talks said the two sides had a “candid and in-depth exchange” of views relating to the disengage-

SC SAYS ARBITRATION RESTRAINING FUTURE-RELIANCE DEAL ENFORCEABLE NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (AGENCIES): In a major win for e-commerce giant Amazon, the Supreme Court on Friday said that arbitration restraining Future Group’s deal with Reliance Industries was valid and enforceable under Indian laws. Last week, the apex court had reserved its judgment in the case about the ruling by a Singapore tribunal restraining Future from going ahead with its merger with Reliance. A bench of Justices R F Nariman dealt with the larger question and held that an award of an EA of a foreign country is enforceable under the Indian Arbitration and Conciliation Act despite the fact that the term EA is not used in arbitration laws here. “The EA Order is an order within section 17 (1) and can be enforced under Section 17(2) of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act,” it said. Amazon.com NV Investment Holdings LLC and Future Retail Limited
(FRL) are embroiled in a bitter legal fight over the Future-Reliance deal and the US-based firm has sought in the apex court that the EA award was valid and enforceable. The verdict by the top court comes almost a year after Reliance Retail announced that it will be buying Future Group’s retail, wholesale and logistics and warehousing businesses by way of a slump sale for Rs 24,713 crore in August 2020. Subsequently, Amazon took FRL into an emergency arbitration before the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) over an alleged
breach of contract by the Future group. Amazon had first filed a plea before the high court (single judge) for enforcement of the October 25, 2020, Emergency Arbitrator (EA) award by SIAC restraining FRL from going ahead with its Rs 24,713 crore deal with Reliance Retail. On February 8, the division bench had stayed the single judge direction to FRL and various statutory authorities to maintain a status quo on the mega-deal. The interim direction was passed on FRL’s appeal challenging the February 2 order of the single judge.
India to carry out military drill with China and Pakistan
NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (IANS): As India makes efforts to thwart threats at its borders from China and Pakistan, troops from the three countries are set to take part in a mega antiterror drill of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Russia aimed at expanding cooperation to deal with the growing menace of terrorism and extremism. As part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisa-
tion initiative, the Peace Mission Exercise is conducted for member states. Peace Mission-2021 is an anti-terrorist command and staff exercise of member countries. More than 3,000 soldiers are expected to participate in the drill. The Indian Army will be conducting air reconnaissance and protecting facilities during the joint drills with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army
and the Pakistan Army. The joint exercise will be conducted by the Central Military Commission of Russia from September 11 to September 25 at the Donguzsky training ground in the Orenburg region in Urals. The drill will involve tactical-level operations in an international counterinsurgency or counter-terrorism environment under the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Charter. The

ment and that the meeting further enhanced mutual understanding. India has been insisting that the resolution of the outstanding issues, including at Depsang, Hot Springs and Gogra, is essential for the overall ties between the two countries. The 12th round of military talks took place over two weeks after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar firmly conveyed to his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi that the prolongation of the existing situation in eastern Ladakh was visibly impacting the bilateral ties in a “negative manner”. The two foreign ministers had held a one-hour bilateral meeting on the sidelines of a conclave of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tajik capital city Dushanbe on July 14. In the meeting, Jaishankar told Wang that any unilateral change in the status quo along the LAC was “not acceptable” to India and that the overall ties can only develop after full restoration of peace and tranquillity in eastern Ladakh.

joint exercise will strengthen mutual confidence, interoperability and enable sharing of best practices among the armed forces of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation nations. India became a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in June 2017. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation was established in Shanghai in
2001, with China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan as its founding members. Sources said the Indian contingent will have 200 personnel, primarily comprising troops from the infantry, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy. Last year, India had withdrawn from a multilateral war game as its troops were engaged in a bitter
standoff with the Chinese PLA in several areas along the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh, while Pakistan was in continuous violation of the ceasefire agreement. At first, India had agreed but later it withdrew from the multi-lateral exercise last year. No reason was cited officially as to why India had reversed its decision.

NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (PTI): After nearly 15 months of face-off, Indian and Chinese armies have completed the disengagement process and restored the pre-standoff ground position in the Gogra friction point in eastern Ladakh, in yet another forward movement towards overall improvement of the situation in the area. Announcing the development, the Indian Army said the disengagement process was carried out on August 4 and 5 and all temporary structures as well as other allied infrastructure created by both sides have been dismantled and mutually verified subsequently. The disengagement process at Patrolling Point17A or Gogra was carried out in line with the outcome of the 12th round of military talks that took place on July 31 at Chushul-Moldo meeting point in eastern Ladakh, the Army said. “As an outcome of the meeting, both sides agreed on disengagement in the area of Gogra. RBI keeps interest rate unchanged Yellowchain outlet officially launched
MUMBAI, AUG 6 (PTI): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday expectedly kept interest rates unchanged at a record low as it chose to support economic revival despite raising its forecast for inflation. The six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted unanimously to retain the main repurchase (repo) rate -- the key lending rate at which the central bank lends shortterm funds to banks -- at 4 per cent, but was split on continuing with the lowerfor-longer stance. “The MPC also decided on a 5 to 1 majority to continue with the accommodative stance as long as necessary to revive and sustain growth on a durable basis,” RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said while announcing the monetary policy. This was a departure from the past when they were unanimous on the need to support growth. An accommodative stance means a rate hike is unlikely. This is the seventh time in a row that RBI has left the policy rate unchanged. RBI had last re-
Shaktikanta Das. (PTI) vised its policy rate on May 22, 2020 in an off-policy cycle to perk up demand by cutting the interest rate to a historic low amid the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to that, the MPC had cut key lending rates by 250 basis points since February 2019 to support growth. With the ebbing of the second COVID wave, RBI retained its GDP growth forecast for the current fiscal year ending in March 2022 at 9.5 per cent, but revised its retail inflation forecast to 5.7 per cent, up from the earlier 5.1 per cent. The projected inflation being closer to the upper tolerance band implies price pressures are
not likely to ease anytime soon despite the revival of monsoon and pick up in Kharif sowing. RBI saw consumer price inflation (CPI) peaking to 5.9 per cent in JulySeptember before falling to 5.3 per cent in the next quarter and rising to 5.8 per cent in January-March. Consumer inflation is seen at 5.1 per cent in first quarter of the next fiscal FY23. The central bank scaled down the growth projections for the next few quarters in the current fiscal but raised the forecast for April-June to 21.4 per cent. This, analysts said, may be reflective of its concerns on the pace of consumption demand revival despite the expectations of a favourable Kharif crop, buoyant exports, steady progress in vaccination, and a conducive monetary and fiscal policy. Growth in Q1 of next fiscal was forecast at 17.2 per cent. “The supply-side drivers could be transitory while demand-pull pressures remain inert, given the slack in the economy,” the Governor said on infla-
tion. “A preemptive monetary policy response at this stage may kill the nascent and hesitant recovery that is trying to secure a foothold in extremely difficult conditions.” He also said the available data point to exogenous and largely temporary supply shocks driving the inflation process, “validating the MPC decision to look through it.” Economic growth in recent months has shown signs of recovery compared to the massive contraction witnessed in the first wave of COVID last year. After a 7.3 per cent contraction in 2020-21, the GDP growth is expected to pick up in the current fiscal. Stating that the recovery remains uneven across sectors and needs to be supported by all policymakers, Das said RBI remains in “whatever it takes” mode, with a readiness to deploy all its policy levers -- monetary, prudential or regulatory. While some highfrequency data such as registration of automobiles, electricity demand, nonoil non-gold imports and
consumer durables sales have shown quick rebound after easing of the COVIDrelated containment, RBI believes nurturing growth has to be a priority. “While the government has taken certain steps to ease supply constraints, concerted efforts in this direction are necessary to restore supply-demand balance. The nascent and hesitant recovery needs to be nurtured through fiscal, monetary and sectoral policy levers,” the policy statement said. Das cautioned against the threat of a likely third wave of the pandemic and assured that the central bank will remain vigilant. “The need of the hour is not to drop out the guard and remain vigilant against any possibility of thirdwave especially in the backdrop of rising infections in certain parts of the country.” Other measures announced include extending an on-tap Targeted LongerTerm Refinancing Operations programme, which allows banks to lend to stressed businesses, by three months to December 2021.

D I M A P U R , AU G 6 (NPN): An E-commerce platform, Yellowchain outlet was launched on Friday, at Hillview Colony, Dimapur by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dimapur Rajesh Soundarajan. The aim of the outlet was to create a linkage everywhere for easy transaction of goods and services. It will provide a platform that will connect all entre-
preneurs, service providers, sellers and all kind of business. Yellowchain is a free E-commerce platform powered by Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN). Launching the outlet, DC in his speech encouraged the gathering to support local and opt for local organic products. Highlighting about the platform, IDAN CEO Alemtemshi Jamir stated that E-commerce Yellow-
chain will liaise with various commercial dealers at the grass-root level. He said that it was a platform to promote economic activities in the state amidst COVID and that anyone can open their business in Yellowchain as a start-up. Jamir said that the launch of Yellowchain will not only facilitate commerce activities but will provide the added advantage of integrating people into the digital world. He said that the outlet has over 500 sellers and service providers registered, which has its presence in all the districts of the state. On developing the software, project developer, Mhathung Kithan said that conceptualization of Yellowchain was due to COVID-19 that brought economic activities to stand still. The main motive behind developing Yellowchain was to promote and to build economic activities in the state, connect entrepreneurs, sellers, buyers and service providers etc. It may be mentioned t h a t Ye l l owc h a i n wa s launched on August 15, 2020 by State chief minister, Neiphiu Rio.

the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obtained by The Washington Post, described the Delta strain as “a variant so contagious that it acts almost like a different novel virus”. It said that Delta, which was first identified in India last year, leaps from target to target more swiftly than even Ebola or the common cold. Delta, more than any other variant, has reset scientists’ understanding of how quickly a virus can evolve into devastating new forms. WHO is already keeping an eye on several: Eta, Kappa, Iota, and Lambda. ‘Next variant can be Delta on steroids’: Is there a variant out there that shrugs off vaccines, spreads like wildfire and leaves people much sicker than seen so far? The report by Newsweek says the odds are not high that we will see such a triple threat, but experts can’t rule it out. Delta has already shown how much worse things can get. COVID: WHO calls China to comply for new probe MOVE AFTER US’ CLAIM COVID-19 MODIFIED AT WUHAN LAB
BEIJING, AUG 6 (IANS): Amidst the World Health Organization (WHO) calling for China to allow for the phase two probe into the origin of Covid-19, a top Texas Republican on the House of Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul, on August 1 said it had obtained new evidence that Chinas Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) created the virus and dismissed the claim that it originated from bats. According to the new evidence, scientists at the WIV have been able to genetically modify coronaviruses without leaving a trace of that modification since 2005. Scientists at WIV successfully modified coronaviruses without leaving a trace as early as 2016 – three years prior to the outbreak. McCaul underlined it as the “greatest cover-up of all time” and has caused the deaths of more than four million people around the world, and people must be held responsible. The report claimed that the researchers at WIV were also able to successfully modify coro-

naviruses without leaving a trace as early as 2016. Therefore, it is no longer appropriate for anyone to dismiss the notion that this virus could have been genetically modified before it leaked from WIV, he added. He also said that the WIV took their virus database offline on September 12, 2019. It is now evident why China was fussing about allowing a proper probe to investigate the origin of the virus that could bring a sigh of relief. On July 27 in Geneva, the Director-General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom
Ghebreyesus, said the first phase of investigation, released in March 2021, had shed light towards a “better understanding” while at the same time posing some challenges. Ghebreyesus called for more access and transparency in the probe after the first phase of the WHO’s investigation ended in February of this year. After the first investigation, he said that although a lab leak was the least likely cause, more research was needed. “Let me say clearly that, as far as WHO is concerned, all hypotheses
remain on the table,” the WHO chief stressed. He rightfully said that the WHO should address this challenge in the second phase, which is related to sharing of raw data, and hoped that China would participate. He pointed out that they could not prevent the next pandemic without tracing the origin of this virus, and in this co-operation is important. He called it science and the world owes this to more than four million people who lost their lives and more than 180 million under-reported cases, all of whom are suffering. The second phase of the WHO’s proposed probe into the origins of the coronavirus in China, including audits of laboratories and markets in the city of Wuhan, calls for transparency from authorities. On the accusations, the Chinese National Health Commission (NHC) Vice Minister Zeng Yixin had reiterated Beijing’s position that some data could not be completely shared due to
privacy concerns. It is a mystery why China does not allow a fully-fledged probe into the origin of the virus despite witnessing the whole world, including China, paying a heavy price in human misery. Unless the origin of Covid-19 is found, global health experts cannot be ready nor prevent the next possible outbreak of another virus from spreading. McCaul points to efforts by Chinese officials to cover-up the leak. He said scientific papers written by WIV researchers not only prove that WIV was doing dangerous genetic modification research on coronaviruses at unsafe biosafety levels, but also that their researchers had the ability to genetically modify coronaviruses as early as 2016 without leaving any trace of that modification. He pointed out that the researchers of the WIV, along with Peter Daszak, a British zoologist who heads the EcoHealth Alliance, tried to cover up the research being done at the WIV.
16mn Australians in lockdown as Covid spreads to more areas C A N B E R R A , AU G 6 (IANS): As Sydney’s Covid-19 outbreak continues to escalate, breaches into neighbouring states and regions have forced some 16 million people along Australia’s densely populated eastern coast into lockdown. The state of Victoria and some regional areas in New South Wales (NSW) are the latest ones joining the ongoing lockdown gripping both Greater Sydney and its surrounding areas, as well as parts of Queensland, reports Xinhua news agency. With these new restrictions that took effect on Thursday evening, an estimated 60 per cent of all Australians are under lockdown orders. On Friday, Victoria recorded six new locally acquired Covid-19 cases. For Victoria, the latest lockdown marks its sixth one, just nine days after its previous 12-day lockdown following an incursion of cases from Sydney in mid-July. When justifying Victoria’s snap decision to re-enter lockdown, State Premier Daniel Andrews expressed helplessness and

painted a picture of a bleak alternative. “With so few in the community with one vaccination let alone two, I have no choice... If we were to wait even just a few days, there is every chance, instead of being locked down for a week and this gets away from us, we are potentially locked down until we all get vaccinated. That’s months away,” said Andrews. M e a n w h i l e , Queensland, with 11 areas in its southeast part including capital city Brisbane in a week-long lockdown, recorded 10 new local cases on Friday, all linked to a known cluster.
Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles said whether the lockdown would end on Sunday as planned depends on the situation in the following days. “It is too soon to say what will happen over the next few days and whether we will be able to ease restrictions on Sunday,” he said. “So the results so far are very, very promising. We need to continue to see low case numbers all linked, declining infectious days in the community and a high rate of testing and if we can keep that up, then we will be able to begin to ease these restrictions.”
Iran welcomes India’s role in Afghan Taliban kill head of govt media department ensuring security in Afghanistan
External Affairs Minister of India Dr. S. Jaishankar meets newly sworn-in President of Iran Ebrahim Raisi in Tehran. (PTI)
TEHRAN, AUG 6 (PTI): Iran and India can play a “constructive and useful” role in ensuring security in the region, especially in Afghanistan, and Tehran welcomes New Delhi’s role in the war-torn country, newlyelected President Ebrahim Raisi told External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar here on Friday. Raisi’s comments came during his meeting with Jaishankar, a day after the 60-year-old Iranian leader was sworn in as the country’s president. This was the second meeting between the leaders of the two nations in one month. Jaishankar had met Raisi, then president-elect, on July 7 during a stopover at the Iranian capital on his way to Russia. During
Friday’s meeting, the Iranian President stressed the importance of close cooperation and coordination between the two countries in developing peace and stability in the region. “Iran and India can play a constructive and useful role in ensuring security in the region, especially Afghanistan and Tehran welcomes New Delhi’s role in the establishment of security in Afghanistan,” Raisi was quoted as saying in a press release issued by the president’s office. “The fate of Afghanistan must be decided by the Afghans themselves, and we believe that if the Americans do not sabotage the situation, this issue will be resolved quickly,” Raisi
added. Emphasising that the Islamic Republic of Iran attaches special importance to establishing extensive relations with India, Raisi said: “From today on, we should take new and distinct steps in the development of bilateral, regional and international relations with a new perspective.” He said that the Iranian government will pursue a policy of developing relations with neighbouring countries and the region, especially India. “There are various sectors, especially in the economic and commercial fields, as well as new technologies, that we should use to promote the level of our relations,” he said. Emphasising the need for a joint programme to increase the level of TehranNew Delhi relations, Raisi said: “By moving in the direction of a joint cooperation programme, we can take steps to bring about different conditions at the level of relations between the two countries in the interests of the two nations”.

JOHANNESBURG, AUG 6 (AP): Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been admitted for observation at a hospital near the Estcourt Correctional Center where he is currently serving a 15-month prison sentence, the government announced on Friday. Zuma is in prison for defying a Constitutional Court order to testify at a state-backed inquiry probing allegations of corruption during his presidential term from 2009 to 2018. A routine checkup indicated that Zuma should be admitted to a hospital, according to the correctional services department’s statement. “As a former president, the healthcare needs of Mr. Zuma require the involvement of the South African Military Health Services. This has been the case since his admission at Estcourt Correctional Center,” the statement said. Zuma’s jailing last month sparked violent riots in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces, which quickly descended into widespread looting of shopping centres and the torching of trucks in KwaZulu-Natal.

to promote, protect and preserve the traditional items by patenting them. Its goal is to preserve and disseminate knowledge of different traditional patterns of the shawls and mekhelas worn by different clans and villages by Ao men and women
which are common to all, including those pieces which are specific and exclusive to certain clans. The main objective of the project has been explained in the project profile, which states, “With the advent of modernity, with its attendant changing trends in fashion, the traditional age-old clothing and ornaments with all its rich symbolism and lores, are being forgotten by the younger generation. The objective of this project is ‘Preservation through Documentation’ of the attires and ornaments before they are lost beyond retrieval.” During an interaction with this correspondent, committee members, however, lamented that many traditional items have been misused and commercialised, which posed a threat in their preservation. Keeping in mind all these facts, they said Watsü Mungdang had formed Patenting and Documentation Committee with Temsusola,
Sendongla, Rongsenlemla, Dr Anungla Aier, Moala Imsong, Dr Imlirenla Walling and Asangla Aier as members in 2009 to oversee and carry out the process of documenting the various attires and ornaments of the Aos, besides patenting them. And since then, the committee has come a long way and it is expected that fruits of their labour will be borne with publishing of a book, which will be a standard reference point for future generations.

High BP: Which drug works best for you?
T
wo long used types of blood pressure drugs are equally effective, but the less popular one seems to have fewer side effects, according to a large “real-world” study. The two classes of medication are both recommended as “first-line” treatments for high blood pressure: angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). ACE inhibitors have been around longer and studied more extensively, so doctors prescribe them more often. But the new findings suggest that ARBs might be a better choice for people just starting on medication, the researchers said. “There was no difference in the effectiveness of the drugs,” senior researcher Dr. George Hripcsak said. “If you’re not having side effects [with an ACE inhibitor], there’s no need to switch.” Looking at data on nearly 3 million patients, the investigators found that ACE inhibitors and ARBs were equally effective at lowering the risks of heart disease and stroke. Where they differed was side effects: ACE inhibitors were more likely to cause chronic cough and angioedema — severe swelling under the skin, often in the face. People on ACE inhibitors were also slightly more likely to have
gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding or inflammation of the pancreas. But those differences may have been due to chance, cautioned Hripcsak, a professor at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, in New York City. Going forward, he said, doctors might want to “preferentially” prescribe ARBs as a first treatment for high blood pressure. This class of drugs includes Losartan, Valsartan and Candesartan. But people who are already using an ACE inhibitor and doing fine can stick with it. ACE inhibitors include lisinopril, captopril and fosinopril. The study was published online July 26 in the journal Hypertension. There is a long list of medications for high blood pressure, and guidelines recommend both ACE inhibitors and ARBs as first-line options. Both classes have been proven effective in lowering blood pressure and curbing the risks of heart disease and stroke. But, Hripcsak said, few trials have made headto-head comparisons of the two drug types to help doctors make decisions on which to prescribe. So his team looked to real-world data. They used a few large databases from the United States, South Korea and Europe, with health records from nearly 3 million
patients who were newly starting an ACE inhibitor or an ARB sometime between 1996 and 2018. The large majority — almost 2.3 million — were prescribed an ACE inhibitor as their single blood pressure medication. The rest (almost 674,000) were started on an ARB. Overall, the study found, there was no clear difference between the two groups in their average risk of suffering a heart attack, stroke or heart failure. ACE inhibitor patients were, however, three times more likely to develop angioedema, and 32% more likely to develop a persistent cough, the findings showed. The risks of GI bleeding and pancreatitis were also slightly higher among ACE inhibitor users. But those figures did not hold up to a statistical analysis the researchers performed, which means they could be chance findings. Dr. Willie Lawrence is a cardiologist at the Center for Better Health, in Benton Harbor, Mich. He said that, in his experience, GI bleeding and pancreatitis have not been issues with the medications. On the other hand, angioedema and “ACE cough” are well-known potential side effects, said Lawrence, who heads the American Heart Association’s National Hypertension Control
Initiative Oversight Committee. There has already been a sense that ARBs are less likely to cause those problems, Lawrence said. But since ACE inhibitors have been available longer, doctors are inclined to prescribe them more often, he added. “I think this study raises the question of whether it’s better to just go straight to an ARB,” Lawrence said. But, he noted, the study does not provide a solid answer: There are inherent limits to observational studies such as this, which track patients given a particular treatment in the real world. Controlled clinical trials, which are designed to specifically test a treatment, offer better evidence. As per the instruction of the Ministry of Rural Development, Govt of India, Shri Hirak Joyti Das from National Institute of Rural Development Guwahati along with the engineering officials of Rural Development Department, Nagaland from all the districts conducted the 1st phase of Time and Motion Study (TMS) from 26th July, 2021 to 2nd August, 2021 at Aqhunaga, Chumukedima, Kuhuboto & Medziphema blocks of Dimapur. After the introduction of preparing technical estimates in the department through online using MORD software SECURE (SOFTWARE FOR ESTIMATE CALCULATION USING RURAL RATES FOR EMPLOYMENT), The basic objective of Time and Motion study is to assess the output and time required to perform a particular activity under the MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act ) for evolving a system of Schedule of Rates (SoR) specific to the nature of work, season, local conditions and workers’ ability. The study aims at two important issues, viz the average output & the standard time required to produce an average quantity of output (per unit) under a task/ activity across agro-ecological regions, seasons and people having different abilities (old age, women, physically challenged, etc.) for eight hours of a day, including an hour’s break? So far, the conduct of study was done for water conservation and water harvesting, Drought proofing, micro irrigation, land development, rural connectivity, fisheries and flood control and protection. Methodology of Time and Motion study for these schemes is to record the time needed to do a certain activity for that approved work, tied with specific method as well as to do systematic observation, analysis and measurement of the separate steps in the performance of a specific activity. Rain stops play, England trail India by 70 runs
KL Rahul plays a shot during the third day of first test cricket match between England and India, Friday. (AP/PTI)
Rahul moved on from 57 to 84 on Day 3, while Rishabh Pant added 25 quick runs. Jadeja scored his 16th Test half-century but even as England took some quick wickets, Bumrah, Siraj and Mohammed Shami did enough to put India in a commanding position. While opener K L Rahul laid the foundation for the visitors with an 84 off 214 balls, Jadeja snatched the initiative with his characteristic enterprise, hitting eight fours and a six in his 56 off 86 deliveries at Trent Bridge. The chatter around all-rounder Jadeja being preferred over specialist off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin would stop for the time being as the optimistic visitors focus on things more important to take them closer to victory and a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Ollie Robinson took his maiden Test five-wicket haul, while veteran seamer James Anderson took four -- becoming the third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket in the process.

PM names Khel Ratna after Dhyan Chand NEW DELHI, AUG 6 (PTI): India’s highest sporting honour Khel Ratna Award, which was named after former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, was on Friday rechristened in the honour of hockey wizard Dhyan Chand following the admirable performance of both men’s and women’s hockey teams in the Tokyo Olympics. While the ruling BJP hailed the announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Home Minister Amit Shah calling it a true tribute to one of India’s greatest sportspersons, the Congress too welcomed it but accused Modi of having “myopic political motive” and demanded that he should also change stadiums named after him and late BJP leader Arun Jaitley. The prime minister tweeted that he had been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. “Respecting their sentiment, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award! Major Dhyan Chand was among India’s foremost sportsper-
sons who brought honour and pride for India. It is fitting that our nation’s highest sporting honour will be named after him,” he tweeted. The exceptional performance of the men’s and women’s hockey teams has captured the imagination of our entire nation, the prime minister said, adding that there is a renewed interest towards the sport that is emerging across the length and breadth of India, he said. The prestigious award carries a prize money of Rs 25 lakh. At a press conference, Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said his party welcomes the decision to name the award after the “the most celebrated sportsperson and hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand”. He then took a swipe at Modi for allegedly having “myopic political motive” in taking the decision. “We sincerely hope that now that a new beginning has been made, Modi ji will announce changing the name of Narendra Modi stadium and Arun Jaitley stadium and name them after legendary

BJP leaders, however, hailed the move. “Naming the country’s highest sports honour in the name of the country’s greatest sportsperson Major Dhyan Chand is a true tribute to him. The decision will make proud everyone associated with
the sporting world,” Shah said, praising Modi for the decision. Lauding the commendable step, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Dhyan Chand is a symbol of inspiration and pride for Indian sports persons. BJP MP Gautam Gambhir, a member of two cricket world cup winning teams, said the Khel Ratna Award should have been named after a sport’s personality when it was launched.
NOTTINGHAM, AUG 6 (PTI/AGENCIES): Rain stopped play shortly after the third session began, with England at 25/0 and trailing India by 70 runs on Day 3 of the first Test on Friday. Rory Burns was batting on 11 and Dominic Sibley on 9 when rain interrupted.
Earlier, half-centuries from KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja and a stubborn 33-run partnership for the last wicket between Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj saw India post a score of 278 in response to England’s 183, taking a 95-run first-innings lead.

Some bookmakers instantly made PSG the favourites to sign Messi and it is easy to see why: the lifestyle in Paris, the financial strength of the club, the connection to many of the players within the first-team squad. Lloyd Harris (File)
WASHINGTON, AUG 6 (AGENCIES): Lloyd Harris earned the biggest win of his career on Thursday evening, defeating Rafael Nadal 6-4, 1-6 6-4 to reach the Citi Open quarter-finals. Nadal overcame a lingering foot injury on Wednesday evening to beat home favourite Jack Sock in a final-set tie-break in front of an energised crowd. But the South African would not allow the top seed to work his magic again. “Today was really special. I think I have had some big wins, and this year I have beat some Grand Slam champions,” Harris said. “But to beat a 20-time Grand Slam champion, and especially in front of a full crowd and with such an amazing atmosphere, it was definitely something very special.” The pain did not impact Nadal’s fighting spirit — and the Spaniard said he felt better against Harris — but it was not enough to topple the South African. The World No. 50 improved to 2-5 against Top 10 opponents after two hours and 11 minutes.
LO N D O N, AU G 6 (AGENCIES): Barcelona have announced that Lionel Messi, the greatest player in their history and perhaps the best player of all time, will be leaving the club because of “financial and structural obstacles”. The club’s brief statement has triggered one of the most explosive stories in the world of sport and has given a golden opportunity to a small collection of teams who might be able to sign Messi as a free agent. Here, Telegraph Sport analyses which clubs might have a strong enough financial, or indeed emotional, pull to sign the 34-year-old. So, where could Messi go next?
strong South American contingent in the dressing room. As well as Neymar, PSG’s squad features Argentines Angel Di Maria, Leandro Paredes and Mauro Icardi. The manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is, of course, another Argentine. For PSG, the signing of Messi would represent another enormous step towards creating perhaps the most formidable commercial brand in football. For Messi himself, it would mean a chance to link up with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in one of Europe’s most exciting attacks. One assumes that PSG would instantly become favourites to lift the Champions League.
days later, he announced that he had changed his mind and that he would not be leaving after all. It is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that Messi does indeed remain at the club this summer, despite the clarity of Barcelona’s statement. Is it a coincidence that this development comes just days after La Liga agreed a deal to sell 10 per cent of its commercial business to a private equity firm? According to Spanish reports, the move is opposed by both Barcelona and Real Madrid. The statement regarding Messi’s future could, therefore, be construed as an attempt to put pressure on La Liga, will be well aware of Stay at Barcelona who the importance of Messi to Haven’t we been here the strength of the league. before? Such a move would, of course, require Messi to accept significantly reduced wages. It would also show that, at the age of 34, he believes his time at the top level of European football has come to an end.

There can be no doubting the appeal to Messi of playing his final few years in the United States. The lifestyle and the burgeoning league has certainly attracted plenty of Messi’s contemporaries, including former Argentina teammate Gonzalo Higuain, who now represents Inter Miami. Messi spent some of his holiday in Miami earlier this summer and is reported to own properties in the area.

C H E N N A I , AU G 6 (IANS): Two-time Indian Super League (ISL) champions Chennaiyin FC (CFC) have completed the signing of defender Slavko Damjanovic on one-year deal ahead of the 2021/22 season. With 151 club appearances in his nine-yearlong career as professional footballer, the left-footed centre-back will provide much-needed stability to the club’s backline. The Serbian could also prove to be a potential attacking threat from set-pieces. Slavko played a pivotal role in Buducnost
Podgorica’s fourth Montenegrin League title in 2019/20 and also featured in their Europa League qualifying matches that year. “I am so happy to join [Chennaiyin FC]. I hope we win the league. The coach is bringing in good players. I will give my everything for the team. I look forward to representing a city with such culture,” the Montenegro-born footballer said. The 28-year-old began his professional career with FK Spartak Subotica in the Serbian league in 2012/13.

Bajrang loses in semis; to fight for bronze
CHIBA (JAPAN), AUG 6 (PTI): Bajrang Punia’s perennial leg-defence weakness came to haunt him at the big stage as he lost the men’s freestyle 65kg semifinal to three-time world champion Haji Aliev here on Friday and he will now fight for bronze medal at the Olympic Games. Rio Olympics bronzewinner Aliev of Azerbaijan consistently attacked Bajrang’s legs and twice got himself into position from where he could roll the Indian comfortably for easy two-point throws. Trailing 1-4 after the first period, Bajrang looked for a big attack but Aliev very smartly effected a counter take down, plac- India’s Bajrang Punia competes against Haji Aliyev of ing his shoulder close to Azerbaijan in the semi-finals on Friday. the thighs of Bajrang and threw the Indian for a huge 8-1 lead. The Azerbaijani was losing steam and Bajrang got two take-downs to reduce the deficit but the required big move never came. Under 30 seconds left in the bout, Bajrang desperately looked for an attack but Aliev did not let him do that by gripping him in strong body-lock. A dejected and helpless Bajrang fell on the mat, aware that he had lost battle to a superior wrestler. Bajrang will now fight for bronze. If he manages to win, India will match its best result at the Olympics. Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt had won a silver and a bronze at the 2012 London Games.

R av i D a h i ya o n Thursday had won a silver in the 57kg. Debutant Indian wrestler Seema Bisla could not find a way to get out of the defensive trap of Tunisia’s Sarra Hamdi and lost her 50kg opening round 1-3. The 27-year-old could not make her moves as Hamdi applied the body lock to great effect, never allowing Seema to initiate a strong attack. There were hardly any moves in the bout with Hamdi getting two of her three points on push out and one on Seema’s passivity. Seema got on board when she too pushed her rival out after being put on activity clock for a second time.
Netherlands win gold in Olympic women’s hockey TOKYO, AUG 6 (AP): The Netherlands won their fourth Olympic women’s hockey title by defeating Argentina 3-1 in the final at the Tokyo 2020 on Friday. Five years after the heartbreak of Rio 2016, when they lost to Great Britain in a shootout competition in the gold medal match -- the Netherlands have become the first NOC to win four Olympic titles. All the action came in the second quarter, when the Netherlands struck three times in the space of six minutes to build a commanding 3-0 lead. Argentina did grab one goal back from a penalty corner.

Hockey: India miss bronze medal after 4-3 defeat to Great Britain
Indian players react after losing their women’s field hockey bronze medal match against Great Britain, at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in Tokyo, Friday. (PTI)
TOKYO, AUG 6 (IANS): There was no fairy-tale ending for the scintillating run by the Indian women’s hockey team as its dream of winning a bronze medal in its maiden entry into the medal round came crashing down at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Friday. India, the surprise semifinalists in Tokyo, went down 3-4 to Great Britain in the bronze-medal playoff at the Oi Hockey Stadium here on Friday. India made a brilliant fightback against a team that won the gold medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics, coming back from a two-goal deficit to take the lead but in the end, the British were lucky to escape to victory as the Indians wasted a number of chances. The unheralded Indians, who finished 12th and last in Rio five years ago, made an unexpected run
into the medal round, winning two matches and beating world No. 2 Australia in the quarterfinals. They lost to the higher-rated Argentina and went down narrowly to Great Britain, but came out with heads held high as Rani Rampal’s team played with determination and nearly upset the order in a competition that they entered as the ninthranked team in the world. From finishing 12th and last in the Rio Olympic Games in 2016 to fourth in Tokyo, the Indian women’s hockey team made a historic leap that will surely inspire a generation of women hockey players in the country. On Friday, India came up with another brilliant performance, proving that their entry into the semifinals was no flash in the pan. Gurjit Kaur’s (25th
min, 26th min) brace of goals and a superb field goal by Vandana Katariya (29th min) went in vain as Great Britain struck through Elen Rayer (16th min), Sarah Robertson (24th min), Hottie Webb Pearne (35th min) and Grace Balsdon (48th min) to seal the victory. It was heartbreak for Rani Rampal’s team as two cards (a yellow and green) in the second half meant India played at least seven minutes with 10 players on the field and that turned the momentum into Great Britain’s favour. The Indian women may have lost the match but they were not vanquished as they leave Tokyo with heads held high after making an unbelievable run into the semis when not many had given them a chance of even reaching the quarters.
Men’s 4x400m relay: India creates Asian record but fails to qualify TOKYO, AUG 6 (IANS): The Indian men’s 4x400m relay team created a new Asian record but that was not enough for the quartet to qualify for the final at the Tokyo Olympics on Friday. The team comprising Muhammed Anas, Noah Nirmal Tom, Arokia Rajiv and Amoj Jacob finished fourth in the second heat at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium with a timing of 3:00.25. Italy (2:58.91) and Netherlands (2:59.06), who ran in the first heat, took the slots for the ‘fastest losers’ combined from both heats to reach the final. Poland emerged as the winners of the second heat with a timing of 2:58.55. Jamaica finished second with 2:59.29 while Belgium came third with 2:59.37. Anas clocked a timing of 45.67 in the first leg
and moved ahead of South Africa and Colombia. Noah ran 45.06 in the second leg while Rajiv clocked 44.84 in the third leg. Jacob made an incredible effort in the last leg to move from sixth to finish fourth, but fell short of making the final. Overall, India were placed ninth behind the eight finalists including the USA (2:57.77), Botswana (2:58.33) and Trinidad & Tobago (2:58.60) from the first heat. The Indian team bettered Qatar’s gold medal timing of 3:00.56 set in the 2018 Asian Games at Jakarta. The men’s relay team was ranked 13th out of the 16 teams to make the cut for the Olympics. They had achieved a season best timing of 3:01.89 at the Inter-State Athletics meet in Patiala held in the last week of June to improve their ranking.
WFI sacks wrestler Punia’s coach after he assaulted referee in Tokyo TOKYO, AUG 6 (PTI): The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Friday terminated the services of Deepak Punia’s foreign coach Murad Gaidarov after it emerged that the Russian had assaulted a referee that led to his expulsion from the Tokyo Olympics. Deepak lost his 86kg bronze play-off to San Marino’s Myles Nazim Amine on Thursday, after which Gaidarov went to the referee’s room and assaulted him, who had officiated the bout. The United World Wrestling (UWW), the world governing body of the game then summoned the WFI for a disciplinary hearing, in which the national federation faced an embarrassing situation as a ban on them was being considered. “We told them that the Indian coaches are wellbehaved and although Gaidarov trains the Indian wrestler, his actions should not affect the WFI. We assured them
that Gaidarov will be terminated immediately. We barely survived a ban,” WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar told PTI. “Gaidarov is being sent back to India so that he can collect all his belongings. Then he will leave for his country,” Tomar added. Gaidarov’s accreditation was cancelled after the hearing. The Russian has been guiding Deepak since last year after the WFI assigned him to train the 2018 junior world champion. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) secretary general Rajeev Mehta also said that Gaidarov is being withdrawn. “Indian wrestling team’s foreign assistant coach Mr Murad Gaidarov who was involved in an uncalled incident of assault on one of the match referees, is being withdrawn from the Tokyo Olympic Village immediately and is being called back to India on the latest flight,” he tweeted.
