country,”he stated. Planning & Coordination minister Neiba Kronu said all legislators who attended the meeting expressed full support to Droupadi Murmu as the NDA consensus candidate for president. Kronu informed that Droupadi Murmu worked as teacher

NEW DELHI, JUL 6 (PTI): Amid a fall in global prices, the government on Wednesday directed edible oil manufacturers to further cut the maximum retail price (MRP) of imported cooking oils by up to Rs 10 per litre within a week, and maintain a uniform MRP of the same brand of oil across the country. As India imports more than 60 per cent of its edible oil requirement, retail prices came under pressure in the last few months taking cues from the global market. However, there has been a correction, resulting fall in global prices. Edible oil makers had cut prices by up to Rs 10-15 per litre last month and prior to that had also reduced the MRP taking cues from the global market. Taking note of a further drop in global prices, Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey called a meeting of all edible oil associations and major manufacturers to
discuss the current trend and pass on the falling global prices to consumers by reducing the MRP. “We made a detailed presentation and told them that global prices have declined by 10 per cent in last one week alone. This should be passed on to consumers. We have asked them to reduce the MRP,” Pandey told PTI after the meeting. Major edible oil makers have promised to reduce the MRP by up to Rs 10 per litre by next week in all imported edible oils like palm oil, soyabean and sunflower oil, he said and added, once the prices of these edible
oils are reduced, the rates of other cooking oils will also get reduced. Besides this, the Secretary asked the manufacturers to maintain a uniform MRP of the same brands of cooking oils across the country as currently there is a difference of Rs 3-5 per litre in different zones. “At present, there is Rs 3-5 per litre difference in MRP of same brands sold in different zones. When transportation and other costs are already factored in the MRP, there should not be difference in MRP,” he said and shared the companies have agreed on this issue.

NTUCT reiterates ‘One Government One Tax’
DIMAPUR, JUL 6 (NPN): Naga Tribal Union Chümoukedima Town (NTUCT) has reiterated that no group or organisation etc will be allowed to impose any tax within Chümoukedima district in pursuance of the Naga public resolution for “One Government, One Tax.” NTUCT president Lhousito Khro and general secretary Longshi Kikon informed that the executive at its meeting reaffirmed the unanimous decision of Nagas taken on November 19, 2017 for “One Government One Tax”. The NTUCT signatories said the union also took strong exception to multiple taxa-
tion demands being served by various Naga political groups and other organisations on the business establishment through various means. NTUCT expressed strong condemnation against such elements and declared that it will not allow any individual or organisation to disturb the peaceful atmosphere in Chümoukedima district. The executive clarified that NTUCT, as the apex organisation of tribal bodies taking such a stand, was intended for the welfare of common people. NTUCT termed the mushrooming growth of multiple societies and organisa-
tions, both constitutional or extra-constitutional in Nagaland, as posing grave threat against a progressive and peaceful society. It therefore appealed to authorities not to allow or recognise such bodies within the jurisdiction of Chümoukedima, so as to maintain peaceful atmosphere and tranquillity in the district. Meanwhile, NTUCT also expressed deep concern over the reckless car driving on the four-lane NH-29, leading to loss of precious lives. NTUCT appealed to the authorities to take appropriate steps to ensure safety of public due to frequent road accidents.
Nitish Kumar on Wednesday visited Lalu Prasad at the Patna hospital and enquired about his health. Lalu Prasad’s wife and former chief minister Rabri Devi, who reached Delhi Wednesday, said, “His (Lalu’s) health is slightly better now.” Out on bail in fodder scam cases, Prasad had last month obtained permission from the Jharkhand High Court for travelling abroad, preferably Singapore, to get a kidney transplant. On whether it would be possible to go to Singapore, Tejashwi said if in 2-4 weeks he can undertake international travel “we may take him to Singapore.”

COVID-19 endemic stage two years away, US study suggests LPG price hiked by Rs 50 WASHINGTON, JUL 6 (PTI): The COVID-19 disease may reach endemic stage in the US in at least two years, according to a modelling study conducted in rats. The researchers noted that illnesses like the common cold and the flu have become endemic in human populations, meaning everyone gets them every now and then, but for most people, they aren’t especially harmful. To develop a better understanding of when and how COVID-19 might become endemic, researchers at the Yale School of Medicine in the US turned
to rats, which, like humans, are also susceptible to coronaviruses. By collecting data on coronavirus reinfection rates among rats, they were able to model the potential trajectory of COVID-19. Animals like pigs and chickens live with endemic coronaviruses, too, and a key factor identified in the spread of animal and human coronaviruses alike is their tendency to evoke what is known as nonsterilising immunity, they said. “It means that initially there is fairly good immunity, but relatively quickly that wanes,” said
Caroline Zeiss, a professor at Yale School of Medicine and senior author of the study published in the journal PNAS on Tuesday. “And so even if an animal or a person has been vaccinated or infected, they will likely become susceptible again,” said Zeiss. Over the past two
years, scientists have come to see that SARS-CoV-2 yields non-sterilising immunity. People who have been infected or vaccinated are still at risk of reinfection. So experts expect that the virus won’t go away any time soon. Zeiss and her colleagues observed how a coronavirus similar to one that causes the common cold in humans was transmitted through rat populations. The researchers modelled the exposure scenario to resemble human exposures in the US, where a portion of the population is vaccinated against CO-
VID-19 and where people continue to face natural exposure to SARS-CoV-2. They also reproduced the different types of exposure experienced by people in the US, with some animals exposed through close contact with an infected rat (high risk of infection) and others exposed by being placed in a cage once inhabited by an infected rat (low risk of infection). Infected animals contracted an upper respiratory tract infection and then recovered. After three to four months, the rats were then reorganised and re-exposed to the virus.
NEW DELHI, JUL 6 (PTI): Cooking gas LPG price on Wednesday was hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder, the third increase in rates since May on firming international energy prices. Non-subsidised LPG now costs Rs 1,053 per 14.2-kg cylinder in the national capital, up from Rs 1,003 previously, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers. Common households pay non-subsidised rates for the cooking gas they buy, after the government restricted subsidy to just poor beneficiaries who got connections under the Ujjwala scheme. This is the third in-
crease in the LPG rate since May and the fourth this year. The price was hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder on March 22 and again by the same quantum on May 7. Rates went up by Rs 3.50 per cylinder on May 19. Prices have gone up by Rs 244 per cylinder since June 2021. Of this, Rs 153.50 increase happened since March 2022. Petrol and diesel prices, however, continue to be on freeze for the third straight month. The pause followed rates being hiked by a record Rs 10 per litre in a matter of 16 days beginning March 22. Naqvi, RCP Singh resign from Union Cabinet
NEW DELHI, JUL 6 (PTI): Union ministers Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and R C P Singh submitted their resignations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, a day before the completion of their Rajya Sabha term, sources said. During a cabinet meeting earlier in the day, Modi lauded both Naqvi and Singh for their contributions to the country during their ministerial tenure, sources said. Former bureaucrat and once a confidant of Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar, Singh resigned on his birthday, one year after joining the Union Cabinet from his party’s quota. He was wished by Prime Minister Modi on his birthday in the morning. With their term as Rajya Sabha MPs set to end on Thursday, both ministers submitted their resignations to fulfil the constitutional

obligation as they will cease to be parliamentarians from Friday. After Naqvi was not nominated in the recent Rajya Sabha polls, there has been speculation that he is being considered for the post of vice president, the election for which is scheduled to be held on August 6, or some other key position. Singh had fallen out of favour with Nitish Kumar and was denied a Rajya Sabha ticket. With his resignation, there are only two ministers at the Centre from BJP allies -- Ramdas
Athawale from the RPI(A) and Anupriya Patel from the Apna Dal. Naqvi was holding the charge of Minority Affairs Ministry and Singh was Union Steel Minister. It was yet to be declared who would get the charge of these ministries. With the Union Cabinet now having two more vacancies and no representation from the BJP’s biggest ally JD(U), there is a possibility of a cabinet expansion-cumreshuffle in near future. However, there was no official word on it so far.
With the Rajya Sabha term of Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi ending on Thursday, the BJP will have no Muslim MP among its 395 Members of Parliament. Naqvi, who resigned from the Cabinet on Wednesday, was among the three BJP Muslim MPs whose term ended during the recent round of Rajya Sabha polls to 57 seats across 15 states but none of them were renominated by the party. The term of two others, former Union minister M J Akbar and Syed Zafar Islam, has already ended. The opposition has been accusing the BJP of not giving adequate representation to Muslims, but the saffron party has maintained that its MPs work for all communities and are not representatives of any religion.
Over the decades, Muslim BJP MPs have had a nominal presence in Parliament. Naqvi himself has been a Rajya Sabha member for three terms, Najma Heptulla for two ter ms and Shahnawaz Hussain, currently a minister in the Bihar government, was elected to Lok Sabha twice. Naqvi was a Lok Sabha member for one term as well. Sikander Bakht, a founder member of the party and one of its first three general secretaries, was a Rajya Sabha member twice. It will be after a considerable period of time that the BJP will not have any Muslim MP. With Naqvi quitting as a minister on Wednesday, this will be a rare occasion when the Union council of ministers will not have a Muslim member.
Is this the cost of toppling Maharashtra govt: Cong on LPG hike NEW DELHI, JUL 6 (PTI): Attacking the BJPled gover nment at the Centre over the hike in price of domestic LPG cylinder, the Congress on Wednesday termed it an “anti-people” decision and asked if this is the “cost” of toppling the Maharashtra government. The Opposition party vowed to hit the streets against the “Modi-made inflation” and run a people’s movement over price rise. The rate of domestic
liquefied petroleum g a s c y l i n d e r s wa s o n Wednesday hiked by Rs 50, the third increase in rates since May. In a tweet in Hindi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said the BJP spoke of welfare of the poor at its national executive meeting while imposing five per cent “Gabbar Singh Tax (GST)” on flour, cereals, curd and paneer, and then broke the back of the poor and middle class by increasing the price
of domestic cooking gas by Rs 50. At a press conference at the Congress headquarters here, Congress spokesperson Ragini Nayak said it is a big surprise under Prime Minister Modi’s rule if the prices of petrol and diesel do not increase and people’s back not broken due to inflation. “The biggest achievement of Prime Minister Modi is that he has been successful in deceiving the country on every front.
Team Uddhav vs team Shinde fight moves to Lok Sabha
NEW DELHI, JUL 6 ( AG E N C I E S ) : T h e Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena, reduced to a minority in the Maharashtra assembly, has appointed a new Chief Whip for the Lok Sabha, fearing revolt by party MPs. Senior party leader Sanjay Raut wrote a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker today and informed him that Rajan Vichare has been appointed the Chief Whip, replacing Bhawna Gawli. The spread of the revolt among the MPs will be a huge disadvantage to the Sena, which has 19 members in the Lok Sabha and three in the Rajya Sabha, Following a revolt by Eknath Shinde last month, Uddhav Thackeray lost 40 of his 55 MLAs and subsequently, power in the state. Last week, he stepped down from the post of the Chief Minister. A day later, the Shinde faction officially joined hands with the BJP and staked claim to form
government, which sailed through the majority test in the assembly on Monday. In the majority test in the assembly held earlier this week, the Eknath Shinde camp received 164 votes in the 288-member assembly, way above the simple majority mark of 144. Only 99 MLAs voted against it -- down from the 107 votes the Opposition scraped up during the voting for the Speaker’s post on Sunday. The new alliance has already picked a Speaker and a Chief Whip in Maharashtra Assembly. They have also appealed to disqualify MLAs from Te a m T h a c k e r ay f o r defying the Whip during t h e t r u s t vo t e i n t h e assembly. Shinde has claimed that his faction is the real Shiv Sena, on basis of twothirds majority. Making the claim first in the Supreme Court, he had said Uddhav Thackeray as the leader of a “hopeless minority” trying to cling onto power.

T H I RU VA N A N THAPURAM, JUL 6 (AGENCIES): Kerala Minister Saji Cheriyan on Wednesday said he was resigning after the controversy over his remarks on the constitution showed no signs of abating and proceedings in the state assembly were disrupted once again, with the opposition forcing an adjournment for the day. Though the Congressled United Democratic Front (UDF) came prepared to take up the matter as an adjournment motion in the assembly and raised slogans against Mr Cheriyan, charging him with ‘humiliating’ the constitution and its architects, Speaker MB Rajesh suddenly announced that the house was adjourned for the day. Terming the Speaker’s action as “unprecedented”, the opposition leaders later met him at his office and conveyed their displeasure over his sudden decision for the early adjournment and alleged that the government and the ruling front were t r y i n g t o av o i d t h e i r questions. Amidst mounting pressure from the opposition for the resignation of Mr Cheriyan, a senior leader who holds Cultural Affairs and Fisheries portfolios in the cabinet, top leaders of the Communist Party of India (CPI-M) met at the AKG Centre to discuss the situation. At the same time, the par ty general secretar y S i t a r a m Ye c h u r y t o l d

OPINION/EDITORIAL
Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 211 DIMAPUR, THURSDAY, JULY 7, 2022
N
Engine of growth
agaland experienced a decade of economic development from the late 60s to mid-80s where several industries were established such as sugar mill, paper mill, plywood and veneer mill, fruit canning unit, Doyang Hydro project various government –run small scale units. It may be noted that during those decades central funding was limited, people were just learning about what industries were all about; the state had just begun its journey towards modernity and everything had to be done from scratch. Despite the drawbacks Nagaland was able to create a buzz in the north eastern states and was the state to be in. Roads were built linking every district, power lines ran the length and breadth of Nagaland, government projects were visible on the ground and schemes reached the beneficiaries intended. However, the progress gradually slowed down and the pace that Nagaland had experienced earlier had almost run aground. After having tried its best to promote trade and industry, the state suffered on account of poor governance and this resulted in grinding halt to government corporations such as the paper mill, sugar mill, veneer mill and similar ventures of the state government. Nagaland has made some meaningful progress during the seventies to eighties due to the enthusiasm of the bureaucracy then and the public’s intense desire to move forward along with the rest of the country. As against the past when development meant peoplecentric pursuits, where good governance was considered the key to economic progress where having good road connectivity, uninterrupted power, water and health services were taken for granted; today the demand supply chain has taken a beating .The pace of progress could not be sustained as the system began to give in to various pulls and pressures and all of which resulted in loss of purpose and inadequacy in matters of management. Thus, till the late 80s, development was progressing quite well but the wheels of progress were gradually retarded by acts of omission and commission. Economic development in the past was people-centric but today in Nagaland, it has become totally politician-centric. Looking at the present scenario, despite having achieved (at least on paper) all the objectives of infrastructure development to propel economic activity, Nagaland has lost momentum and hardly moving at the required pace while all other states in the north east are moving ahead. Take for example the much hyped and awaited expansion of NH 29 to 4-lane. It started in 2015 and was to be completed in 2018-19 but even in 2022, it does not appear to be nearing completion in a hurry. The over focus on political issues and less on impediments to progress has only led to the present stagnation. It may be understood in the context of how over indulgence in politics and fruitless rhetoric has overwhelmed the system of governance. The state began experiencing a slow down from the early 90s due to gradual erosion against the system which had been badly compromised by corruption and politicisation. It was only to be expected that respect for the government became an option as the ‘khushi-khushi’ rule became the order of the day. This syndrome is not particularly restricted to any political class or genus but is widespread. It is not law and order nor central funding that will propel the engine of economic but delivering good governance.
DailyDevotion The Inevitable Penalty You will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny. —Matthew 5:26 There is no heaven that has a little corner of hell in it. God is determined to make you pure, holy, and right, and He will not allow you to escape from the scrutiny of the Holy Spirit for even one moment. He urged you to come to judgment immediately when He convicted you, but you did not obey. Then the inevitable process began to work, bringing its inevitable penalty. Now you have been “thrown into prison, [and]…you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny” (Matthew 5:25-26). Yet you ask, “Is this a God of mercy and love?” When seen from God’s perspective, it is a glorious ministry of love. God is going to bring you out pure, spotless, and undefiled, but He wants you to recognize the nature you were exhibiting— the nature of demanding your right to yourself. The moment you are willing for God to change your nature, His recreating forces will begin to work. And the moment you realize that God’s purpose is to get you into the right relationship with Himself and then with others, He will reach to the very limits of the universe to help you take the right road. Decide to do it right now, saying, “Yes, Lord, I will write that letter,” or, “I will be reconciled to that person now.” These sermons of Jesus Christ are meant for your will and your conscience, not for your head. If you dispute these verses from the Sermon on the Mount with your head, you will dull the appeal to your heart. If you find yourself asking, “I wonder why I’m not growing spiritually with God?”— then ask yourself if you are paying your debts from God’s standpoint. Do now what you will have to do someday. Every moral question or call comes with an “ought” behind it— the knowledge of knowing what we ought to do.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JULY 7, 2022
Post-mortem
Our Belonging: Realism and acting in hope T here is no doubt that the current discourse around Naga political rights has led many to despair. For idealists and purists, historicists, and common observers alike, this despair is a cause for—and a result of—our sense of feeling trapped and overwhelmed by our present circumstances. Such despair, in whichever way it manifests itself, is ultimately volatile. There is only so much we can bottle up, including decades of internalized wounds and anger, before the sweaty rhetoric of war chants and primal disposition are unleashed. Spurred onby highly managed maneuverings—ranging from idolatry of words to conspiracy theories to posttruth narratives—instigated by powers that are difficult to be named, our daily situation is one in which hope and clarity is overshadowed by hopelessness and subjectivism. In our political talks in Delhi, at home, and among the inner circle of individual groups, we are not saying nor seeing anything new about the approaching harvest of the Nagas, the rightful owners of the “rice fields” that have sustained us throughout our history. In truth, the Naga
political groups (NPGs) are allowing others to script the Naga political rights. It is no surprise that at a time when we are easily stirred by strong personal feelings, we have become instinctivelyinsecure, defensive, and retaliative.Inspiring a more secure, proactive, and constructive imagination visà-vis the essence of Naga political rights sometimes seems like a daunting, if not impossible, task. But, what choice do we have if we are tosuccessfully discern between what is realistic, and therefore attainable, and what is just an unachievable fantasy? In our context, pursuing a constructive imagination, and subsequently a hopeful and attainable reality, should start with reflection on who we are and how we came to where we are. It should include a careful examination of how we act and interactamong ourselves and with others. First, starting with the NPGs: Theymust keep in mind their positions as national leaders, and should think and act as leaders of such stature. Simply said, they must not allow themselves to be used as tokensby others, either for individual positioning or political leverage. They
must possess the awareness and foresight to prevent the Naga people from losing hard-fought gains vis-à-vis our collective identity. Second, today, civil organizations and individuals within the Naga society have become “entities” to be studied and deployed by political analysts and policy makers. Granted, Naga organizations and individuals are not a homogenous group with the same aims, and in fact, the reality is that there exist many opposing viewpoints and agendas. It is critical then that we becomemore aware of our positions and how our intentions and actions, however small or large, will impact the larger picture now and in the future. What has been achieved by the nonstop circulation of statementsand exhortations? In this age of ever-presentmedia speculation and noise, acting with wisdom, restraint, and integrity will go a long way. Third, I consider myself of the older generation, and it must be said with sincerity that I am ashamed of myself (and the older generation) for teaching the young Naga minds to hate others and to make statements like “we have not made mistakes,”
“they are wrong,” “never utter that we are at fault.”These false constructs by the Naga elders have situated contemporary Naga minds in the past. We elders, including NPG and civil society leaders, can undo this negative way of thinking by ensuring that we never entertain or certify the entrusting of Naga political rights to the stock market of wheeling and dealing. We must revisit who we are in an act of self-reflection. Are we not self-righteous individuals? Are our souls not guilt-ridden? Have we genuinely reconciled with the past? The act of mustering radical honesty to be true to each other may seem foolish, but takes real courage. Let us listen to the voice of our conscience without letting the warrior instinct in us deploy the usual “defensive syndrome” of arrogance and the “who cares” attitude of apathy. History is a living soul—alive—and to be alive is to hear and listen, and change and reconstruct. We must act right away. There is a vast power vacuum and forces not suited for us are waiting to fill it. It is indeed very doubtful for the Naga nation if its leaders refuse to set their hearts and minds to
sit and talk. A nation is “worn out” and “tired” when its leaders retreat to bunkers. I use the word “nation” willfully and intentionally to affirm our given-ness. We are called to imagine how to practice and exist as a nation, to live out our given-ness. Currently, the state of this imagined nation in the history of the present Naga people is in distress. It is clouded by idealism on one side and a cult of exclusivism, domesticated by a master trainer and passed on to any takers, on the other side. This present Naga political culture of division is tearing the nation apart. Nevertheless, I am beginning to sense a shift among the Nagas in general, from North to South, East to West, all the way to the Center. Is this simply naïve optimism on my part? No, not at all. Today the younger generations are coming of age. They are much more informed than previous generations and are both inductive and deductive in their ideas and actions. There are signs of something new happening. Take this to heart: The younger generations are angry with the older generation—of which I am a part—for teaching them that black is white
and vise versa. They are angry for how we sold the Naga right for personal gain. They are angry at our continual insistence on historical purity. These young generations are determined to transcend divides and debunk narrow political narratives of hate, anger, and self-righteousness. With my sincere respect to all who have commented on the present state of Naga affairs, ranging from senior politicians, bureaucrats, village chiefs, women bodies, community organizations, student institutions, and recognized and unrecognized voices, I humbly and boldly write this personal statement to the Naga people. I implore you all to take a chance immediately. It is absolutely futile to keep on censoring each other through our usual rhetoric of exclusivity and divisiveness. If we are really serious of our destiny, it is a total waste of time to criminalize others from a distance. Let us instead sincerely re-imagine unity. It is time for a more “understood difficult unity” that acknowledges the reality of our group differences. Wati Aier (This article is an individual opinion and does reflect any organization)
Hazardous Science College, Jotsoma road Children and technology addiction
T
he road from Minister’s Hill junction traversing towards Kohima Science College, Jotsoma demands Government’s attention for urgent rectification of its high volatility to accidents given the fact that, besides the normal traffic, it also ferries thousands of students to Kohima Science college, Jotsoma, Sazolie College, C D King HSS, GHSS, Jotsoma and Aldervile HSS and that too by buses. Jotsoma also houses the one and only DDK, TV Station of the State, the main PHED Water Reservoir that supplies water to the major portion of Kohima city and then the RCEMPA, Jotsoma, Music Task Force Nagaland where various regular periodical programmes including State level functions are held. The precarious narrow road already overloaded by traffic is compounded by denizens of Kohima, both young & old and families, who prefer to use this road for its rich forest fresh air environment for running, jogging and walking exercises enthused by the gaining popularity of health consciousness has, unfortunately, turned this road as the most dangerous and hazardous in terms of safety. In addition to the narrowness and sharp turns, the road has deep drainages posing dangerously for vehicles crushing into them and true it is and happens while trying to avoid bumping into the other vehicle coming from the opposite di-
rection that has cut in too far inside the right side to save pedestrians or dodging trucks and buses. Compounding the given precarious situation, the phenomenon of unpredictable regular thick fog that occurs in the stretch creates a formidable foe for commuters. It is like a time bomb of mishaps that will explode anytime and predictably it is happening very frequently; a vehicle in the ditch or in the ravine and the latest accident was a taxi that occurred on 4th of this month. It may be noted here that the first sharp turn from Kohima side which is situated about three to four hundred feet away from KMC parking towards Jotsoma had already witnessed several accidents in this very spot but no barricade has been erected till today except a sign board that says ‘Accident Prone Area’ that continue to let unfortunate vehicles going down the gorge. A humble suggestion is even if expansion of the whole road is not possible, because the area is within a reserved forest area, work on at least the ten sharp curves of the road by five or six feet can be done at minimum cost. It is also suggested that a separate iron structure footpath be constructed wherever the road is narrow for benefit and safety of pedestrians. This will in turn beautify more the already pristine wild forest area with its natural streams. It will be a
true local tourist attraction as it leads to an already famed and frequented tourist destination; Puliebadze also called Lover Paradise. Recently, the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari had declared a zero tolerance for road accidents and that action should be taken immediately on black spots. The declaration of Gadkari is timely and very much in tune with what is being suggested for Science College, Jotsoma road and even other similar or worse roads existent in Nagaland, for instance, like Wokha Merapani road. Aptly saying that road safety is a serious issue, Gadkari also said that the Central Government is according highest priority to road safety and has set a target to reduce fifty percent of road accident deaths by 2024. Taking the message further, the Minister has asked all Regional Officers and Project Directors to take a pledge of zero accidents. What better clue and opportunity for the concern Roads & Bridges Minister or National Highway Minister of the State to earnestly work on improvement of the Kohima Science College, Jotsoma road and other roads of the State by applying one’s wisdom to take forward the desire of Hoh’ble Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari. P
erhaps one of the most common discussion amongst parents today is the addiction of technology that the children are facing today. It often becomes frustrating for a parent to see their child constantly on the mobile, IPad, laptop or maybe the television. Excessive usage of screen time and the pandemic has further deteriorated the situation. On an average a teen spends almost 8-10 hours in front of the screen and parents feel that they are losing control over their children. They fear that if they impose restrictions on the screen time or if they take it away, there’s going to be a big scene at home. Here are a few tips that will help you parents to ease out this addiction of your children: Set no technology time – Decide a fixed time, maybe an hour and call it a no technology hour. During this time no member of the house should use technology; including parents. Utilize this time to communicate with each other or play a board game or maybe even watch a movie together. No technology during meal time – Ensure that at least one meal should be together with the family without any usage of mobile phones or TV. No technology after 10 pm – If your child has school the next day, set a certain time when the phone should be kept in your room for the night. This will give the child a sound sleep and be ready for the next morning. Late night usage of phone greatly impacts both sleep and health. Teach them socializing – Encourage them to meet and play with their peers. Tell them to go cycling or play any outdoor game. This not only improves their social skills but will also develop healthy physical habits. Re arrange your room – Change the seating of your TV room in such a way that to look at the TV, one needs to turn and twist making it difficult to watch. Hand them responsibilities – Allot
household responsibilities to your children as per their age. It’ll be solely their duty to fulfil it. The responsibilities can be such as filling water bottles to purchasing household items from the nearby market. Take small steps to make it easier – De addicting the usage of technology isn’t easy and if you expect to see changes immediately, then forget it. Start by little, maybe 15 minutes and gradually increase the timings. Disable the notification apps – Because even if we are busy and the notification rings, automatically our hand reaches the phone to check it and so do our children’s. Encourage your child to disable all unnecessary notification apps to avoid constant monitoring. Black and White – Life is colorful but keep the phone display black and white as colorful screen attracts you and your children, a black and white won’t, resulting in less usage. Be a role model – Children are monkeys that copy everything parents do. If we parents are not able to keep ourselves away from our mobiles, then why do we expect our children to do so? According to a study, an average man touches his / her mobile 2617 times a day and an addict more than 5400 times daily. In which category do you see yourself parents?? To wrap up – If you feel you or your children are becoming addicted to technology, take action immediately. It may be difficult at the starting but it isn’t impossible, start small as I’ve said. If you want your child to have a healthy, happy and enriching growing up years, you have to start now. Parul Vohra is a Parent Counsellor who assist parents & teachers in becoming more effective, confident & capable in their skills so that they can better manage the child’s everyday challenges and develop a stress-free relation and environment at home and at work.
Why Gorkhas celebrate Bhanu Jayanti as their cultural festival
G
orkhas have been living across Nagaland for past several years and also known as few first settlers among the non-Naga communities in Nagaland. Gorkhas have a unique, distinct, rich culture and tradition, which they are preserving and protecting it. Nepalis/Gorkhas are known as simple and humble, yet brave people, India Gorkha are the Nepali Speaking Community in India, hence, it is the duty of every Gorkhali to preserve the Nepali Language like other communities preserve their own. Gorkhas celebrate Bhanu jayanti not just for merry making or for entertainment. Birth anniversary of Adikavi Bhanu Bhakta Acharya is observed as Cultural day by the Gorkha community. Bhanu jayanti is celebrated to remember that Great Poet who had used Nepali script for the first time to write a Nepali poem also he has played a big role in the formation of our Nepali language. Birth anniversary of Aadi Kavi Bhanu Bhakta Acharya is celeberated by Nepali speakers in Nepal, India and all over the world on 13th July.
Bhanu Bhakta Acharya is the first poet of the Nepali language. He is highly honored for using Nepali script for the first time to write a Nepali poem in the local dialect about many years ago. Bhanubhakta’s has much more major literary work in Nepali. The First poem written by Adi Kavi Bhanu Bhakta acharya. “He gives his life to cutting grass and earns little money, he hopes to make a well for his people so he will be remembered after death, this high thinking grasscutter lives in poverty, I have achieved nothing though I have much wealth. I have neither made rest houses nor a well, all my riches are inside my house. This grass-cutter has opened my eyes today, my life is worthless if the memory of my existence fades away.” Bhanu bhakta was born in a very wealthy Brahmin family of Chundiramgha, Tanahu, Nepal in 1871. His Grandfather Shri. krishna Acharya who was very well known of his time. He re-
ceived an excellent education with a strong leaning towards religion at home from his grandfather. When Bhanu bhakta was 22 years, he was influenced by an incident so much that made him to turn out a poet. One day he encountered a grass-cutter and in their conversation he found that the grass-cutter wanted to give something to society so that he could be remembered after death too. After listening to the grasscutter answer Bhanu bhakta felt ashamed of himself. It not only sparked literary creativity in Bhanu bhakta but also inspired him to do something noble. He had used Nepali script for the first time to write a Nepali poem. Bhanu bhakta Acharya died in 23rd April 1868. Nepali literature legend Bhanu bhakta is the one who started to write poems in Nepali so that an average Nepali could also grasp the taste of words and literature. At that time poems and formal literature were in the Sanskrit language, in this sense there was a great need and importance of scholars who could understand and explain the Sanskrit language. It was difficult
for the common people to understand literature and artistic expression in the simplest sense. Bhanu bhakta simplified the words and meanings and made literature accessible to everyone, a common Nepali was able to grasp the literary sense in his own language. Today, his books have become so popular that the people in and outside Nepal, especially in rural areas, have made it a friend of happiness, sorrow, inspiration and problem. If one visits the rural religious rites, rituals and marriages, one can find people reciting the rhythmic rhymes of the epic. Even the people in the deep forest, where they graze their cattle, keep reciting the verses rhythmically. This literary creation of Bhanu Bhakta has remained in the tongue, heart and hand of the people. And because of his noble work Bhanu bhakta and Nepali language became synonym in Nepali literature.Poet Bhanu bhakta was not only a romantic but a satiric poet too. Other remarkable books by him are Badhu Sikshya, Bhakta Mala, Prasnottar Mala Kantipuri Nagari, etc. is also popular
among the Nepali literateure. In the memory of Bhanu bhakta, Bhanu Jayanti is celebrated in Nepal, Darjeeling, Sikkim and other regions of India and all over the world with Nepali speaking society, be it Myanmar, Nepal, India, Bhutan or anywhere. Bhanu bhakta is not only a poet but also a master of Nepali language and the rhythm of Bhanu bhakta is still alive in every Nepali tongue. Bhanu Bhakta Acharya is regarded as Aadi Kabi, means the beginner poet or the first poet of Nepali language. It is his creation that Nepali language has become very popular among the people. It is his creation that laid the foundation of Nepali literature. Thus, people pay due respect and honor him every year on 13th July as Bhanu Jayanti. Today, all over the worlds, where there are Nepali speaking people are residing, will be commemorating his 208th birth anniversary. Gorkhas of Chümoukedima will also be commemorating his anniversary on 13th July 2022. Bhanu Jayanti, the birthday of Nepali pioneer poet “Adikavi” Bhanu bhakta Acharya, it is celebrated on
July 13 every year as a symbol of nationality by Nepalese who are in and outside the country. We the Gorkhas of Chümoukedima will also commemorate his anniversary though he was not born to Nagaland soil because we are speaking the language, of which foundation was laid by him. Gorkhas of Nagaland people still recite his creation and utmost love and respect. They too have used his books as their friend whether they are in problem, happiness or sorrow. He is very popular in the community. Thus, Gorkhas of Nagaland celebrate his anniversary with self-volunteerism, as we feel that he owes this respect and honor. We celebrate his anniversary in respect to the foundation of language laid by him. It will not be sufficient just on publishing poems and literary works on his name; we should also make our new generation to know about him and pay respect to him through at least commemorating his anniversary every year. dargah cleric arrested for DGCA issues show-cause notice on SpiceJet Ajmer call to ‘behead’ Nupur Sharma
NEW DELHI, JUL 6 (PTI): Aviation regulator DGCA issued a show-cause notice Wednesday to SpiceJet after it reported eight technical malfunction incidents involving its planes over the last 18 days, flagging safety oversight, inadequate maintenance and payment-related shortage of spares. SpiceJet has failed to “establish safe, efficient and reliable air services” under the terms of Rule 134 and Schedule XI of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, the notice issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) stated. “The review (of the incidents) transpires that poor internal safety oversight and inadequate maintenance actions (as most of the incidents were related to either component failure or systemrelated failure) have resulted in degradation of the safety margins,” it added. The DGCA has given
the airline three weeks to respond to the notice. “Financial assessment carried out by DGCA in September 2021 has also revealed that the airline is operating on ‘cash-andcarry’ (model) and suppliers/approved vendors are not being paid on a regular basis, leading to shortage of spares and frequent invoking of MELs (minimum equipment lists),” the notice read. Reacting to the DGCA notice, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia asserted that passenger safety is paramount. “Even the smallest error hindering safety will
be thoroughly investigated and course-corrected,” the minister said in a tweet. In a statement on Wednesday, the airline said it is in receipt of the DGCA notice and will be responding within the specified time period. “We are committed to ensuring a safe operation for our passengers and crew. We are an IATA-IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) certified airline. SpiceJet successfully completed the meticulous audit program for recertification in October 2021,” it mentioned. The airline said it has been regularly audited by the DGCA.
“All our aircraft were audited a month ago by the regulator and found to be safe. All flights of SpiceJet are conducted in compliance with the applicable regulations of the DGCA Civil Aviation Regulations on the subject,” it noted. At least eight incidents of technical malfunction have taken place on SpiceJet planes in the last 18 days. On Tuesday, a SpiceJet freighter aircraft, which was heading to Chongqing in China, returned to Kolkata as the pilots realised after the take-off that its weather radar was not working. On the same day, the airline’s Delhi-Dubai flight was diverted to Karachi due to a malfunctioning fuel indicator and its KandlaMumbai flight did priority landing in Maharashtra’s capital city after cracks developed on its windshield mid-air. On July 2, a SpiceJet flight heading to Jabalpur
returned to Delhi after the crew members observed smoke in the cabin at an altitude of around 5,000 feet. Fuselage door warnings lit up on two separate SpiceJet planes while taking off on June 24 and June 25, forcing the aircraft to abandon their journeys and return. On June 19, an engine on the carrier’s Delhi-bound aircraft carrying 185 passengers caught fire soon after it took off from the Patna airport and the plane made an emergency landing minutes later. The engine malfunctioned because of a bird hit. In another incident on June 19, a SpiceJet flight for Jabalpur had to return to Delhi due to cabin pressurisation issues. The airline has been making losses for the last three years. It incurred a net loss of Rs 316 crore, Rs 934 crore and Rs 998 crore in 2018-19, 2019-20 and 202021 respectively.
JAIPUR, JUL 6 (PTI): A cleric of the Ajmer dargah, who on camera allegedly offered his house to anyone who beheads now-suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her controversial remark against Prophet Mohammad, has been arrested, police said on Wednesday. A police official said the video purportedly showing ‘khadim’ Salman Chisti was shot before tailor Kanhaiya Lal’s murder in Udaipur on June 28 but surfaced on the internet later. Officials also said the cleric is a “history-sheeter” and that he might have recorded the video in an inebriated condition. The Ajmer police had registered an FIR against him on Monday night. “Salman Chisti was caught last night (Tuesday)... He is a historysheeter at the Dargah police station,” Dargah police sta-

tion SHO Dalbeer Singh Foujdar said. Ajmer Assistant Superintendent of Police Vikas Sangwan said Chisti was caught at his residence in Khadim mohalla. He said the video was shot before June 28 and was leaked later. “Prima facie, he made the video in inebriated condition. He is being interrogated further,” the ASP added. In the video, the cleric is purportedly seen and
heard announcing he would gift his house to anyone who brings Sharma’s head to him. Chishti is also allegedly heard saying he would shoot her dead for insulting the Prophet. “You have to give a reply to all Muslim countries. I am saying this from Ajmer, Rajasthan, and this message is from Huzur Khwaja Baba ka darbar,” he purportedly says in the video, referring to the Sufi shrine that sees many Hindu visitors, apart from Muslim devotees.

Govt notifies procedural changes in GST rules
NEW DELHI, JUL 6 (PTI): The government has notified certain procedural changes in the GST rules, including those related to threshold, for filing annual returns for the 2021-22 fiscal, a move that will help ease the compliance burden on small players. The changes were vetted by the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council at its meeting last week. With the amendments notified by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), businesses have also been allowed to make tax payments on the GSTN portal by using IMPS and UPI payment modes. Businesses with aggregate annual turnover of up to Rs 2 crore in the fiscal ended March 31, 2022 are exempt from filing annual returns for 2021-22, as per the amended rules. KPMG in India Partner (Indirect Tax) Abhishek Jain said these changes will help the small players in undertaking compliances, and will lighten the burden for taxpayers with less than Rs
2 crore turnover to the extent of filing of annual returns under GST. AMRG & Associates Senior Partner Rajat Mohan said other important changes include extension of time-limit specified under Section 73 (determination of tax) under the GST Act for issuance of an order for FY 2017-18 to September 30, 2023. However, no extensions have been provided for any other financial year. “In relation to the delayed filing of refund applications during the COVID period (March 1, 2020 to February 28, 2022), suitable extension has been granted that will enable numerous exporters to encash the re-

India’s restaurant body calls service charge guidelines illegal NEW DELHI, JUL 6 (AGENCIES): A day after the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) prohibited restaurants from unilaterally levying service charges on customers, the restaurant owners have lashed back. Questioning the legality of the CCPA guidelines that prohibits restaurants from levying service charge, the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) has alleged that it has only led to disruption in business activities. “The latest guidelines issued by CCPA has once again created unnecessary confusion amongst the consumers, leading to disruption in smooth business operations of restaurants. Through these repeated guidelines, there is an attempt to start a campaign against this restaurant industry practice without any legal basis”, it said in a statement. Tearing into the government’s claims that customers are being duped by restaurants by levying services charges without informing them that these
charges are optional, the NRAI further argued that service charge “constitutes one of the components of the total price of the product” and, thus, cannot be optional. It also said, that government does not have any authority to interfere in the matter. “Neither the gov ernment nor any authority can interfere with the decision of the business owner in this regard. It is a universally accepted trade practice….Once the customer places the order after being made aware of the terms and conditions there comes into existence a binding contract. No authority can interfere with binding nature of a valid contract until and unless it is shown and proved to be unconscionable or against any unfair trade practice”, it said today. According to NRAI, since voluntary service charges paid by customers are “pocketed” by the frontend employee who has directly served the customers, the back-end employees lose out on any share from it. Thus, it is “the owner’s
discretion as to how to run its business and what policy should be put in place regarding pricing of the product. The government cannot bring about a change insofar as a levy of service charge is concerned by making guidelines”, the NRAI said. The restaurant owners’ response came after the CCPA, under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, issued guidelines against restaurants that adds service charges unilaterally in bills. According to CCPA, the customer should have the choice of paying or not paying any service charges depending on the quality of service paid by the restaurant. “Hotels, restaurants can’t force customers to pay service charge; it will be voluntary option at customers discretion. Service charge in hotel/restaurant bill cannot be collected from customers by any other name; can’t be added to food bill”, it said. In case of violation, consumers can lodge complaint on National Consumer Helpline number 1915 against the concerned hotel or restaurant.

NEW DELHI, JUL 6 (AGENCIES): The production-linked incentives (PLI) scheme, which seeks to boost manufacturing in key areas by offering nearly Rs 2.4 lakh crore in incentives over the next five years, can add 4 per cent to the GDP annually in terms of incremental revenue, says a report. So far, the scheme has seen maximum response from the electronics, auto components, and pharma sectors, according to Emkay Investment Managers. The PLI scheme has the potential to add nearly 4 per cent to GDP per annum in terms of incremental revenue if fully realised, the report released on Tuesday said.

US Congress seeks probe of Fr Stan’s death Boris Johnson govt hit by more resignations
N E W YO R K , J U L 6 (PTI): A resolution commemorating the life of Indian human rights defender Father Stan Swamy and seeking an independent investigation into the death of the Jesuit priest has been introduced in the US Congress, Congressman Juan Vargas has said. Vargas, the Representative from the US state of California, announced that he recently introduced the resolution in Congress to commemorate Swamy “and to encourage an independent investigation” into his death. The resolution, cosponsored by Representatives Andre Carson and James McGover n, has been introduced in the US House of Representatives and coincides with the first anniversary of 84-year-old Swamy’s death in police custody. Vargas, a Democratic Party Congressman, spoke

at a webinar titled ‘Persecution of Religious Minorities and their Defenders in India: Commemorating Father Stan’s Death in Custody’ on Tuesday. UK MP Neale Hanvey, MEP Alviina Alametsa (EU), Senator David Shoebridge (Australia), and UN Special Rapporteur Mary Lawlor addressed the event. The webinar was coorganised by Front Line
Defenders, Hindus for Human Rights, the Humanism Project, India Civil Watch International, and Survival International, and cosponsored by Adivasi Lives Matter, Dalit Solidarity Forum, the Federation of Indian American Christian Organizations of North America (FIACONA), and the Indian American Muslim Council, a joint press release said.
The panelists noted Swamy’s extensive service fighting for the rights of Adivasi people, it added. “I am appalled by the abuse Father Stan faced while in custody. No one who fights for human rights should face such violence and neglect,” said Vargas. S wa my d i e d a t a Mumbai hospital, where he was admitted on May 29 last year, a day after he suffered a cardiac arrest and was put on ventilator support. He suffered from Parkinson’s disease and several other ailments. Swamy was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from Ranchi, Jharkhand in October 2020 under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in connection with the Elgar Parishad case and lodged at the Taloja Central Jail in Navi Mumbai. The Elgar Parishad case relates to alleged in-
flammatory speeches made by some activists at a conclave held in Pune on December 31, 2017. India rejected international criticism over the death of Swamy last year, saying the due process of law was followed in his case and that the authorities act against violations of law and do not restrain the legitimate exercise of rights. “Authorities in India act against violations of law and not against legitimate exercise of rights. All such actions are strictly in accordance with the law,” MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in July last year in response to media queries relating to reactions over the demise of Swamy. In view of Father Swamy’s ailing health, the Bombay High Court had allowed his medical treatment at a private hospital where he was receiving all possible medical attention since May 28, Bagchi said.
LONDON, JUL 6 (IANS): In a fresh blow to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who recently survived a leadership challenge, three more have resigned from his government on Wednesday, media reports said. Education ministers Will Quince and Robin Walker and ministerial aide Laura Trott on Wednesday, BBC reported. Will Quince said he had “no choice but to tender my resignation” while Laura Trott said she was quitting over a loss of “trust” in the government. The resignations have added to the pressure on the Prime Minister following the departure of his health and finance ministers. Two of Boris Johnson’s top ministers -- Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid -- quit the government on Tuesday. “I have spoken to the Prime Minister to tender my resignation as Secretary of State for Health &

Social Care. It has been an enormous privilege to serve in this role, but I regret that I can no longer continue in good conscience,” Javid had said in a tweet. Javid said he can no longer serve in Boris Johnson’s government in “good conscience” as he has “lost confidence” in the Prime Minister. Setting out his decision to quit in a letter, he wrote: “I am instinctively a team player but the British people also rightly expect integrity from their Government. The tone you set as a leader, and the values you represent, reflect on your colleagues, your party and ultimately the country. Conservatives at
their best are seen as hardheaded decision makers, guided by strong values. We may not have always been popular, but we have been competent in acting in the national interest. “Sadly, in the current circumstances, the public are concluding that we are now neither. The vote of confidence last month showed that a large number of our colleagues agree. It was a moment for humility, grip and a new direction. I regret to say, however, that it is clear to me that this situation will not change under your leadership - and you have therefore lost my confidence too.”

G-20 meeting may lead to wider divisions over Ukraine
Antony Blinken
Sergey Lavrov
Wang Yi
WASHINGTON, JUL 6 (AP): Foreign ministers from the world’s largest nations are looking to address the war in Ukraine and its impact on global energy and food security when they meet in Indonesia this week. Yet instead of providing unity, the talks may well exacerbate existing divides over the Ukraine conflict. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi are set to attend the Group of 20 meeting in the Indonesian resort of Bali, which will set the stage for a summit of G-20 leaders at the same venue in November. It will mark the first time Blinken and Lavrov have been in the same room, let alone the same city, since January. There’s no indication the two will meet sepa-
rately, but even without a one-on-one with Lavrov, Blinken could find himself in some difficult discussions. The State Department announced Tuesday that Blinken will hold separate talks with Wang at a time when already extremely tense U.S.-China relations have been worsened by Beijing’s friendly ties with Moscow. And, unlike in recent leader-level meetings with NATO partners and other like-minded partners, Blinken will find himself among diplomats from countries wary of the U.S. approach to Ukraine and concerned about its impact on them. U.S. officials say that aside from Wang, Blinken will have bilateral talks in Bali with counterparts from countries that have not seen eye to eye with the West on the Russian inva-
sion, notably India, which has increased purchases of Russian oil even as the U.S. and Europe have tried to choke off that revenue stream for Moscow. In announcing that Blinken would meet with Wang in Bali, the State Department had little to say about the possibility of him seeing Lavrov, whom the U.S. has shunned since the Ukraine invasion in February. The department said there would not be a formal meeting between Blinken and Lavrov, whom U.S. officials accuse of a lack of seriousness before, during and after the invasion of Ukraine. “We would like to see the Russians be serious about diplomacy,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said. “We have not seen that yet. We would like to have the Russians give
us a reason to meet on a bilateral basis with them, with Foreign Minister Lavrov, but the only thing we have seen emanate from Moscow is more brutality and aggression against the people and country of Ukraine.” The Biden administration maintains there can be no “business as usual” with Moscow as long as the war continues. But neither Price nor other U.S. officials could rule out the possibility of a chance Blinken-Lavrov encounter in Bali, which would be their first since they last met in Geneva in January. Price declined to discuss what he called the “choreography” of the G-20. Like almost all recent international diplomatic gatherings, the Bali meeting will be overshadowed by Ukraine. But unlike the Western-dominated G-7 and NATO summits held in Europe last week, the G-20 will have a different flavor. China and many other participants, including India, South Africa and Brazil, have resisted signing onto U.S. and European full-throated opposition to Russia’s invasion.
struck in 2020, Saudi authorities allowed just 1,000 pilgrims already residing in the kingdom to attend, prompting historians to compare the disruption to the site’s storming by religious extremists and dramatic closure in 1979. Last year, the hajj was similarly restricted to 60,000 fully vaccinated Muslims living in Saudi Arabia. The unprecedented curbs sent shock waves throughout the Muslim world, devastating many believers who had spent years saving up for
the religious rite. This year, however, Saudi authorities are keen to relax virus curbs. Religious pilgrimages brought in USD 12 billion before the pandemic — accounting for the largest percentage of Saudi Arabia’s gross domestic product after oil. Although virus cases have risen steadily to over 500 a day in Saudi Arabia, the government lifted the country’s indoor mask mandate and other virus precautions last month. Roughly 70% of the country has been vaccinated against the virus.

Salman’s lawyer claims death threat from Bishnoi gang
merican pop-rock band Maroon 5 removed the design of Japan’s imperial-era flag from the band’s official website Wednesday after the use of the image angered South Korean music fans ahead of its world tour that includes stops in Asian countries. According to sources in the music scene, the band deleted the image of the Rising Sun Flag from the website Wednesday morning, replacing it with an image of the band, Yonhap news agency reported. Maroon 5 used the design in the background of a post released Saturday to announce it will hold a world tour in November, including a stop in South Korea. Many Koreans view the Rising Sun Flag, formerly used by the Japanese Imperial Army, as a symbol of the country’s past militarism. Since the post was released, many Korean fans have flocked to online communities to express their anger over the move. Seo Kyoung-duk, a professor of Seoul’s Sungshin Women’s University who is known for his efforts to promote Korean interests abroad, also sent a protest letter to the group, asking it to delete the image. The band will hold a one-day concert at Seoul’s Gocheok Sky Dome on November 30, as part of the world tour. It will mark the band’s first performance in the country since February 2019. (IANS)

DOES CLEARING ANY STAGE OF NPSC, ALONE MAKE ONE AN EXCELLENT TEACHER FOR CIVIL SERVICE EXAMS?
Having cleared any stages of UPSC/NPSC does not necessarily signify the quality of teaching of a faculty. In NICSE’s decade long experience in NAGALAND, ASSAM & DELHI, we have observed that no matter how many times and how many stages a faculty has cleared UPSC/NPSC, all that matters most to become an excellent teacher in this field are, depth of knowledge, teaching skills, ability to predict questions, ability to micro-analyse a topic and ability to inculcate every subject matter in the classroom in the simplest manner. These form the basic selection criterion for a faculty at NICSE. Becoming an excellent teacher and cracking an exam are two different ball games. All one needs is a great teacher to strengthen the fundamentals so that one can tackle any question in Prelim as wells as Mains

Will include Tejaswin in CWG squad, Delhi HC told
Tejaswin Shankar
NEW DELHI, JUL 6 (IANS): The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on Wednesday told the Delhi High Court that it will include Tejaswin Shankar, India’s high jump national record holder, in the 2022 Commonwealth Games squad. Shankar was knocking the doors of the High Court as he was not included in the list of 36 names picked by the federation for the CWG squad. AFI’s counsel submitted that one of the athletes was disqualified from the relay event which enabled Shankar to place in the contingent. As Adv Hrishikesh Baruah, appeared on be-
half of the federation, apprised of the AFI’s decision, the bench of Justice Yashwant Varma told him to immediately inform the selection of Shankar to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) as well as the Commonwealth Games authority. However, the matter was kept pending by the court as it was stating that the discrepancies in AFI’s selection process merit further consideration to prevent “national embarrassment” in the future. In the last hearing, the court had recorded that Shankar is the major contender for this year and only two people above him have the better jumps
in the world. He met the qualification marks set by the AFI itself. The federation has been actively told to consider his participation in the selection meeting, the court had noted. The Delhi-based Shankar is studying business administration at Kansas State University in the US and is on a four-year athletics scholarship since 2017. In the plea, the petitioner contended that the AFI’s decision to exclude him from the CWG squad is arbitrary, illegal, and against the national interest. The decision of the federation is despite being the national high jump record holder (2.29m) and being the only Indian to have met the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) qualification standard of 2.27m with a jump of 2.27m as recently as June 10, while winning a gold medal at the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championship 2022 in Eugene, Oregon in the US, his plea said.

KUALA LUMPUR, JUL 6 (IANS): Top Indian shuttlers -- P.V Sindhu, B Sai Praneeth and Parupalli Kashyap -- advanced to the second round while compatriot Saina Nehwal made a first-round exit at the Malaysia Masters 2022, here on Wednesday. Former world champion Sindhu advanced to the second round women’s singles event after a hardfought 21-13, 17-21, 21-15 win over China’s He Bing Jiao in 56 minutes at the Axiata Arena. Sindhu, who had lost
to He Bing Jiao in the first round of the Indonesia Open last month, dominated the early exchanges to build a massive 11-3 lead heading into the first break. The Indian player then controlled the game to take a 1-0 lead. After the change of ends, Jiao led the twotime Olympic medallist Sindhu 11-7 at the break. The Indian ace, with a fourpoint streak, levelled the game at 11-all but He Bing Jiao regrouped quickly and stretched the match into the decider. The third game
saw both shuttlers engage in long rallies. After the scores were tied at 3-all, World No. 7 Sindhu struck 10 points on the trot and weathered a late comeback to progress into the second round of the BWF Super 500 badminton tournament. This was Sindhu’s ninth win over the world No. 9 He Bing Jiao in 19 games. P.V. Sindhu also defeated He Bing Jiao on her way to the Tokyo Olympics bronze medal last year. In the second round, the Indian shuttler will face the winner of the match between world No. 47 Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia and world bronze medallist Zhang Yi Man of China. However, London Olympics bronze medallist Saina went down 21-16, 17-21, 14-21 to Kim Ga Eun of South Korea. Nadal overcomes injury to reach Wimbledon semis
LO N D O N, J U L 6 (AGENCIES/REUTERS): Rafael Nadal fought through injury to come from behind to beat Taylor Fritz and reach the Wimbledon semi-finals. The 22-time major champion, who had a medical timeout at the end of the second set and struggled with his movement for long spells, won 3-6 7-5 3-6 7-5 7-6 (10-4). It keeps Nadal’s bid for a calendar Grand Slam on track and sets up a semifinal against Nick Kyrgios. Nadal, who had strapping on his abdomen in his previous match, seemed to be bothered by the same issue again. Early into the contest, Nadal was seen clutching his abdominal area, a trend that would persist. At times, he struggled to move at full speed, though did hold 3-1 and 3-0 leads in the first two sets before seeing them erased by the opposition. At 4-3 in the second set, Nadal was visited by the trainer and left the court to receive treatment. It appeared his family did not want him to continue,
the No. 2 seed pulled away to shut the door.

Rafael Nadal but the two-time winner carried on, and eventually broke to level the contest. Serving at 1-1, 30-40, Nadal double-faulted and bent over as he winced again. Fritz wrapped up the third set with a double break when Nadal yanked a crosscourt forehand wide. Nadal twice saw break advantages erased by Fritz in the fourth set. He served to stay in it, 4-5, 0-15, then regained control to push the clash into a decider. Both players held comfortably in the early goings. Then tension built. At 2-3, Nadal stared down deuce. In the follow-
ing game, Fritz saved two break points, the first with a backhand that kissed the net and trickled over, but Nadal seized a third with a forehand up the linebackhand drop shot winning combo. Fritz didn’t go away. A nifty backhand half volley coupled with some mistakes from Nadal saw the American get back on serve. And from there, the two held to arrive at a decisive 10-point tiebreak. Nadal bolted out to a 5-0 start, forcing the issue on Fritz’s backhand side. Three straight points from Fritz cut the gap briefly, but
There has been no stopping Simona Halep at this year’s Wimbledon as the Romanian produced another eye-catching performance to surge into the semi-finals with a 6-2 6-4 win over American Amanda Anisimova on Wednesday. The 2019 champion did not exactly give the fans who had forked out 175 pounds ($208) for a Centre Court ticket value for money as she toppled a shellshocked Anisimova in 63 minutes to reach her third semi-final at the All England Club. After Halep had wrapped up the first set when Anisimova banged a service return long, the American was left rejecting one racket after another into her red bag as she was broken for the fourth time to trail 4-1 in the second set. The 30-year-old Halep was broken while serving for the match at 5-1 and Anisimova had her 0-40 down when she tried again at 5-3.
Pogba set to rejoin Juventus on free transfer Dhawan to lead India in ODIs against WI
LONDON, JUL 6 (AGENCIES): Paul Pogba is set to rejoin Juventus on a free transfer after his Manchester United contract expired. It is understood the 29-year-old France midfielder will have a medical at the weekend before completing the move, BBC reported. Pogba joined United from the Italian side in 2016 for a then world-record fee of £89m. United and Pogba failed to agree on a new contract and the club confirmed at the start of June that he would leave as a

free agent this summer. It is anticipated Pogba will begin training with Juventus next week prior to their trip to the United States, where they will face Barcelona and Real Madrid on 27 and 30 July respectively. For the second straight season, Juventus finished fourth in Serie A, 16 points behind champions AC Milan. They had been Italian champions for the preceding nine seasons, with Pogba playing a key role in their title wins from 2012-13 to 2015-16. He scored 34 goals
from 178 games in his previous spell with Juventus having also joined on a free from United in 2012, after coming through the Old Trafford academy. During his first season back at Old Trafford, Pogba helped United win the EFL Cup and Europa League but they would prove to be the only trophies he won in his second spell. A disagreement with then manager Jose Mourinho saw him lose the vice-captaincy in 2018 and injuries and sporadic form reduced his impact.
