NEW DELHI, JUL 6 (PTI): Amid a fall in global prices, the government on Wednesday directed edible oil manufacturers to further cut the maximum retail price (MRP) of imported cooking oils by up to Rs 10 per litre within a week, and maintain a uniform MRP of the same brand of oil across the country. As India imports more than 60 per cent of its edible oil requirement, retail prices came under pressure in the last few months taking cues from the global market. However, there has been a correction, resulting fall in global prices. Edible oil makers had cut prices by up to Rs 10-15 per litre last month and prior to that had also reduced the MRP taking cues from the global market. Taking note of a further drop in global prices, Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey called a meeting of all edible oil associations and major manufacturers to

discuss the current trend and pass on the falling global prices to consumers by reducing the MRP. “We made a detailed presentation and told them that global prices have declined by 10 per cent in last one week alone. This should be passed on to consumers. We have asked them to reduce the MRP,” Pandey told PTI after the meeting. Major edible oil makers have promised to reduce the MRP by up to Rs 10 per litre by next week in all imported edible oils like palm oil, soyabean and sunflower oil, he said and added, once the prices of these edible

oils are reduced, the rates of other cooking oils will also get reduced. Besides this, the Secretary asked the manufacturers to maintain a uniform MRP of the same brands of cooking oils across the country as currently there is a difference of Rs 3-5 per litre in different zones. “At present, there is Rs 3-5 per litre difference in MRP of same brands sold in different zones. When transportation and other costs are already factored in the MRP, there should not be difference in MRP,” he said and shared the companies have agreed on this issue.

NTUCT reiterates ‘One Government One Tax’

DIMAPUR, JUL 6 (NPN): Naga Tribal Union Chümoukedima Town (NTUCT) has reiterated that no group or organisation etc will be allowed to impose any tax within Chümoukedima district in pursuance of the Naga public resolution for “One Government, One Tax.” NTUCT president Lhousito Khro and general secretary Longshi Kikon informed that the executive at its meeting reaffirmed the unanimous decision of Nagas taken on November 19, 2017 for “One Government One Tax”. The NTUCT signatories said the union also took strong exception to multiple taxa-

tion demands being served by various Naga political groups and other organisations on the business establishment through various means. NTUCT expressed strong condemnation against such elements and declared that it will not allow any individual or organisation to disturb the peaceful atmosphere in Chümoukedima district. The executive clarified that NTUCT, as the apex organisation of tribal bodies taking such a stand, was intended for the welfare of common people. NTUCT termed the mushrooming growth of multiple societies and organisa-

tions, both constitutional or extra-constitutional in Nagaland, as posing grave threat against a progressive and peaceful society. It therefore appealed to authorities not to allow or recognise such bodies within the jurisdiction of Chümoukedima, so as to maintain peaceful atmosphere and tranquillity in the district. Meanwhile, NTUCT also expressed deep concern over the reckless car driving on the four-lane NH-29, leading to loss of precious lives. NTUCT appealed to the authorities to take appropriate steps to ensure safety of public due to frequent road accidents.

COVID-19 endemic stage two years away, US study suggests LPG price hiked by Rs 50 WASHINGTON, JUL 6 (PTI): The COVID-19 disease may reach endemic stage in the US in at least two years, according to a modelling study conducted in rats. The researchers noted that illnesses like the common cold and the flu have become endemic in human populations, meaning everyone gets them every now and then, but for most people, they aren’t especially harmful. To develop a better understanding of when and how COVID-19 might become endemic, researchers at the Yale School of Medicine in the US turned

to rats, which, like humans, are also susceptible to coronaviruses. By collecting data on coronavirus reinfection rates among rats, they were able to model the potential trajectory of COVID-19. Animals like pigs and chickens live with endemic coronaviruses, too, and a key factor identified in the spread of animal and human coronaviruses alike is their tendency to evoke what is known as nonsterilising immunity, they said. “It means that initially there is fairly good immunity, but relatively quickly that wanes,” said

Caroline Zeiss, a professor at Yale School of Medicine and senior author of the study published in the journal PNAS on Tuesday. “And so even if an animal or a person has been vaccinated or infected, they will likely become susceptible again,” said Zeiss. Over the past two

years, scientists have come to see that SARS-CoV-2 yields non-sterilising immunity. People who have been infected or vaccinated are still at risk of reinfection. So experts expect that the virus won’t go away any time soon. Zeiss and her colleagues observed how a coronavirus similar to one that causes the common cold in humans was transmitted through rat populations. The researchers modelled the exposure scenario to resemble human exposures in the US, where a portion of the population is vaccinated against CO-

VID-19 and where people continue to face natural exposure to SARS-CoV-2. They also reproduced the different types of exposure experienced by people in the US, with some animals exposed through close contact with an infected rat (high risk of infection) and others exposed by being placed in a cage once inhabited by an infected rat (low risk of infection). Infected animals contracted an upper respiratory tract infection and then recovered. After three to four months, the rats were then reorganised and re-exposed to the virus.

NEW DELHI, JUL 6 (PTI): Cooking gas LPG price on Wednesday was hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder, the third increase in rates since May on firming international energy prices. Non-subsidised LPG now costs Rs 1,053 per 14.2-kg cylinder in the national capital, up from Rs 1,003 previously, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers. Common households pay non-subsidised rates for the cooking gas they buy, after the government restricted subsidy to just poor beneficiaries who got connections under the Ujjwala scheme. This is the third in-

crease in the LPG rate since May and the fourth this year. The price was hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder on March 22 and again by the same quantum on May 7. Rates went up by Rs 3.50 per cylinder on May 19. Prices have gone up by Rs 244 per cylinder since June 2021. Of this, Rs 153.50 increase happened since March 2022. Petrol and diesel prices, however, continue to be on freeze for the third straight month. The pause followed rates being hiked by a record Rs 10 per litre in a matter of 16 days beginning March 22.
