Colloquium conducted on integral education DIMAPUR: Commemorating the 150th anniversary of Sri Aurobindo, 9 members of Eager to Forge Ahead (India) Modern Institute of Teacher Education (MITE) conducted a colloquium on Sri Aurobindo’s integral education on December 3. A press release from MITE, principal Dr. Kate Dandesh Kumar stated that according to the convenor of the colloquium, Dr. T.S. Pandian, the followers of Sri Aurobindo enunciated Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy on integral education and discussed various strategies for fostering the same. They lamented that many educational institutions give emphasis only on the three pillars of education enunciated by the UNESCO such as “Learning to know;

Learning to do; and Learning to live together” which are focusing on the external realities and leaving aside the fourth pillar “Learning to be”’ that requires one to look into one’s inner self. In spite of education commissions and policies emphasizing on the holistic development of children in educational institutions, there are challenges to provide integral education in educational institutions. This requires the enlightened teachers and the colloquium was an awakening programme for the prospective teachers. The two sessions of the colloquium were followed by interactive sessions and distribution of certificates by MITE Kohima viceprincipal H.L. Gangte.

The 70 years presence of Indian armed forces in the region has become a catalyst to suppress the political and historical as-

pirations of the people of the region, it stated The presence of armed security forces in the region has brought pain and suffering to the people as their brutal acts are continuously practiced in the region, MSAD added Despite cease fire ag reement with Naga armed insurgents since 1997, AFPSA is still implemented in the state and under the curtain of the Act, the Indian security forces exercise the killings of innocent civilians and rape and torture of women and children, it alleged.

The ar med forces work under the cover of the AFSPA in the region and do not have to face any court of law. It conducts its own internal enquiry and the people do not get to know whether a case reached its logical conclusion of not, Gogoi added. “(The) Nagaland killings are a caricature of the Indian Govt. Revoke AFSPA,” Gogoi also wrote on Twitter. Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi also took to the Twitter to vent his opposi-

Aspiring candidate threatened with bomb in Manipur

Police investigating an incident of depositing a hand grenade at the house of an intending candidate in Imphal East district on Monday morning. Correspondent IMPHAL, DEC 6: Miscreants on Monday deposited a hand grenade with a note asking an aspirant candidate not to contest the election amid the bitter election campaign in the poll-bound Manipur. The hand grenade with

the note was deposited at the gate of the residence of Md Islauddin Khan aka MI Khan at Keirao Makting under Irilbung police station of Imphal East district early Monday morning. Khan is currently campaigning to contest the upcoming poll from Keirao Assembly constituency in

Imphal East district. The bomb was found in a polythene bag hanging at the gate of the aspiring candidate after locals informed the police of suspicious unattended bag. A police team who rushed to the spot cautioned the locals, including family members, before calling out

experts of the state police bomb detection and disposal squad. The bomb was disused and later disposed off safely, the police said. In the note found in the polythene bag, Khan was threatened not to contest the election. Denouncing the bomb threat, residents of Keirao Makting and its adjoining areas today staged a protest. Strongly condemning the bomb threat, they set a three-day deadline to clarify with reasons if any of the armed groups were behind the threat. The protesters further demanded the state police department to investigate to find out the culprit(s) and bring them to justice. They also demanded security protection for the intending candidate.

Zoramthanga governments had agreed to form their teams involving all stakeholders to resolve the border dispute through dialogue, Zoramthanga said. “We decided to con-

stitute teams comprising representatives of opposition parties and NGOs to discuss the border issues. We are committed to maintain peace along the inter-state boundary,” he told reporters here. Both the states have also agreed to hold discussions at the chief ministerlevel from time to time, he said. Zoramthanga said the inter-state border dispute between Mizoram and Assam is a “long-pending issue which needs more time to be solved”.

“We may not be able to resolve it within the next two years of our rule. But Mizoram and Assam are committed to find a solution at the earliest,” he said. Asked whether the state government will claim a 509 square-mile stretch of the inner-line reserve forest notified in 1875 under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873 or not, Zoramthanga said the boundary commission formed under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia has been entrusted to make a stand-

point on the issue. “As of now, the relation between the two states is very cordial,” he said. Meanwhile, Joint Action Committee on Inner Line Reserve Forest, a civil society organisation, has urged the Mizoram government to take measures to reclaim the 509 square-mile stretch of the reserve forest from Assam. Three Mizoram districts - Aizawl, Mamit and Kolasib - share a 164.6-km long boundary with Assam’s Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2021

botched ambush, could amount to Nagaland deaths: furore over AFSPA in Parl Army murder: Retired Supreme Court judge

AFSPA is an object of hate, it must go: Asaduddin Owaisi

NEW DELHI, DEC 6 (AGENCIES): The killing of 14 civilians, in a botched security operation and its aftermath, in Nagaland Saturday reverberated in the Lok Sabha Monday with AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi demanding a repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and Congress’ Pradyut Bordoloi seeking an amendment to the legislation, reports The Print. A team of Army and Assam Rifles personnel shot dead eight civilians around 4.30 pm Saturday, during an operation based on intelligence inputs about the movement of NSCN (K) militants. This was followed by a mob attack on security forces later at night, which resulted in the killing of one soldier and at least six other civilians in “counter fire” by security personnel. Participating in the Zero Hour discussion, Opposition MPs

Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday moved adjournment motion notice over the Nagaland firing incident.

condemned the incident and demanded a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. They also sought an inquiry into the incident and adequate compensation for the affected families. Demanding re peal o f t h e A F S PA , A l l India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen’s Owaisi said no country in the world has a “barbaric law like this”. “Will the government give permission to prosecute the killers? Was the informant linked with China?” Owaisi asked. Addressing the House later, Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed regret over the incident, and said security personnel fired in self-defence. He also said all

agencies should make sure that such an incident doesn’t happen again. Pradyut Bordoloi, Congress MP from Assam’s Nawgong constituency, called for an amendment to AFSPA. “As an Indian, I hang my head in shame when the Army indulges in such barbaric acts against its own citizens. AFSPA has been extended again in Nagaland… The amendment of AFSPA should be carried out,” he said. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi called the incident a “dark day” in the state’s history. Blaming inaccurate intelligence for the incident, Gogoi said, “The question in everyone’s mind is that

how come a g roup of unarmed civilians were not distinguished from hardcore militants.” In the northeast, AFSPA is operational in Assam, Nagaland, Manipur (except Imphal Municipal area), three districts (Tirap, Changlang and Longding) of Arunachal Pradesh and the areas falling within the jurisdiction of eight police stations in the districts bordering Assam. The Ministry of Home Affairs had on 30 June extended AFSPA for a period of six months on the ground that Nagaland continues to be in such a disturbed and a dangerous condition that the use of the armed forces in aid of the civil power is necessary”.

Oppn demands probe

The Opposition also demanded a probe into the incident. Badruddin Ajmal of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) called for a high-level inquiry into the incident and compensation of Rs 50,000 for the families of those who lost their lives. “The whole nation is ashamed

today,” he said. Ritesh Pandey of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Shiv Sena’s Vinayak Raut demanded speedy investigation in the matter and review of intelligence agencies. Expressing concern over the incident, Raut said, “How does this kind of incorrect information get passed on to the security f o r c e s b y i n t e l l i ge n c e agencies? There should be a review of their work.” Yepthomi, the lone MP from Nagaland and member of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), demanded that an inquiry be initiated and adequate compensation be given to affected families. NDPP is in alliance with BJP in the state. Other MPs who condemned the killings in the Zero Hour included T.R. Baalu of the DMK and Sudip Bandyopadhyay of the Trinamool Congress. The Trinamool MP said Nagaland should not be thrown into uncertainty. Baalu said it’s condemnable that our security forces have killed our own people.

NEW DELHI, DEC 6 (AGENCIES): AFSPA the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Protection Act - does not mean security forces “can go around just killing anybody”, retired Supreme Court judge Justice Madan Lokur told NDTV Monday, amid outrage over the deaths of 14 civilians during a botched Army op in Nagaland this weekend. Justice Lokur also underlined the “extremely defective” application of AFSPA - which gives armed forces the power to conduct ops anywhere in enforced states and arrest anyone without a warrant. AFSPA also protects security forces from all legal proceedings unless it is cleared by the centre. In the context of the Nagaland violence and killings, there are concerns the centre will cite AFSPA to protect the Army’s elite 21 Para Special Forces from investigation by Nagaland Police. Refer ring to the operation in Nagaland, Justice Lokur said ‘’the armed forces proactively did whatever they did.

Rtd. Supreme Court judge Justice Madan Lokur

So, it would cer tainly qualify as an ‘intention to kill’... depending on the investigation it could, perhaps, be called ‘intention to kill’.” Justice Lokur - who was part of the Supreme Court bench that in 2017 directed the CBI to probe dozens of extra-judicial killings by the Army and police in Manipur, when AFSPA was in force there - also told NDTV, “I don’t know how they (Nagaland Police) are going to investigate.” ‘’I think there should be an independent investigation done by people - by eminent people. They should be the ones to investigate because there are sufficient chances, if I may use that expression, there are sufficient chances for the armed forces to try and cover up the incident,”

he said. According to a preliminary report by Nagaland Police, a group of villagers converged on the scene of Saturday’s failed ambush after hearing gunshots. They reportedly found 21 Para SF personnel trying to wrap bodies in tarpaulin sheets and take them back to their base. The Army has categorically denied any attempt at a cover-up; sources said the plan was to move the bodies to a police station and that there was never any effort to hide or dispose of the corpses. Justice Lokur also spoke about claims in the Nagaland Police FIR that it was the “intention” of the security forces to “murder and injure innocent civilians”. “Here, because you know, that it was not in self-defence, so to speak, but proactive action taken by the armed forces, it could amount to murder. Again... depending upon the investigations and whatever the facts are revealed, eventually,” Justice Lokur said.

favour of none except the Congress. The Chief Minister said now there is sea change in the mood of rank and file of the Congress, especially after the ouster of Amarinder Singh. On the issues of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and drugs, Channi said things were moving on the right track and soon justice would be delivered to the satisfaction of the people. Replying to another

query about possible damage caused by Amarinder Singh to the Congress in the ensuing Assembly polls, Channi said a person who could not deliver during his tenure of four and a half years and confined himself within the four walls of his farm house, how anyone can now rely on his fledgling party, which absolutely lacks credibility due to his past nature of nonaccessibility and slackness. “Amarinder Singh had been playing a friendly match with the Badals to mutually facilitate each other in the seat of power to pursue their narrow vested interests. These so-called foe-turned-friends this time too are secretly engaged in adjustment of seats during the assembly polls to extend political gains to one another,” he claimed.

NEW DELHI, DEC 6 (IANS): The number of people suspected to have been infected with the Omicron Covid variant in Delhi has increased to 27, of which 17 of them have tested positive for the virus, Health Minister Satyendar Jain said on Monday. “A total of 27 Omicron suspects coming through various flights from abroad are currently admitted in the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital,” he said, adding that out of the total suspects, 17 have tested positive for Covid and the remaining 10 are their contacts. “All have been admitted in the LNJP hospital... It is our endeavor to prevent the spread of Omicron in any way from international arrivals landing at airport.” Ta l k i n g a b o u t t h e preventive measures, Jain underlined the mandatory

use of masks and to maintain Covid appropriate behaviour in an effort to prevent the third wave of the pandemic. “Our graded response action plan is ready, as the cases increase or the positivity increases, we will implement it,” Jain said while urging people to take the second dose of vaccines if they are due. The capital city has reported one Omicron case so far. The infected person had travelled from Tanzania. However, 17 cases of the variant were detected across the nation on Sunday alone, which increased the overall total to 21 in India since the outbreak of Omicron was first reported i n S o u t h A f r i c a . Ja i n emphasized on the need to stop the flights coming from abroad, adding that CM Arvind Kejriwal has appealed to the Centre to do so.

KOLKATA, DEC 6 (PTI): A BJP MLA from Kurseong has written to party president J P Nadda, seeking separation of Darjeeling from West Bengal, months after a similar demand made by the saffron camp’s Alipurduar MP John Barla had stirred a hornet’s nest in the state. Bishnu Prasad Sharma, in his letter, sought to remind Nadda of the top leadership’s promise of finding a permanent political solution for the Hills. Barla had demanded a union territory for north Bengal districts earlier in the year, sparking a debate in the state, with the ruling TMC accusing the saffron camp of fanning separatism. Sharma, on his part, claimed people of the Hills, which witnessed several violent movements over

TMC-MGP negotiations for 2022 Goa polls in final stages

PANAJI, DEC 6 (IANS): The Trinamool Congress and the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), a regional political outfit, are in the final stages of alliance negotiations, even as president of the MGP Deepak Dhavalikar on Monday said that the party had passed a resolution to align with the West Bengalbased party for the 2022 Assembly polls. “Preliminary talks have been held, we have apprised the central committee (of the MGP) of these talks, taken

their views and have taken this decision. We had decided that we will go with the party that agrees to our demands and the TMC agreed to a bulk of our demand and for that reason we have decided to go with the TMC,” he also said.

Black December

ecember 4,2021 will be one of the blackest day not only for the people of Oting village but also for the entire state of Nagaland as it was a day when six youths were travelling back to their homes at Oting village. They were ordinary labourers working at coal mines at Tiru valley and were probably looking forward to be home with their families days ahead of Christmas. However, they were hardly one kilometre short of their village when their lives were cruelly cut down by a hail of gunfire in an ambush laid by the Army’s Special Forces from the 21 Para commandos. They were mistaken to be militants but they never got the chance to prove this ‘information wrong’ held by the security forces, because the guns did the talking. After gunning down six and injuring another two, the 21 Paras continued with their bloody action when they killed another seven people the same night. Security forces operate under certain standard procedures in order to avoid civilian casualties or cause collateral damages. In the two incidents on the same day and a few hours intervening them, such a huge loss of civilians lives that could have been prevented, leads to conclusion that the standard operating procedures were not followed. The incidents near Oting and later at Mon town where security forces killed 15 civilians is nothing short of massacre. It will be added to the list of atrocities in Nagaland since the late 50s. Nagaland has many black days in its history and the incident at Mon district on December 4 and 5, will join one infamous tragedy – the Matikhrü Massacre on September 6,1960 when nine men (80% of the men folk) were beheaded allegedly by the 16 Punjab regiment in retaliation for the attacks carried out by the Naga Home Guard, forerunner of the Naga Army. In those dark days, when the world did not know and when the national media did not care; Nagas lived in a nightmarish world. Even before they got statehood, Nagas of Nagaland were placed under the Disturbed Areas Act which allowed promulgation of the Armed Forces(Special Power) Act 1958. Countless atrocities were perpetrated by the armed forces while operating in Nagaland and later, some other states in the north east. The AFSPA is not only a draconian law but also a license to the armed forces to act with impunity since they cannot be tried for crimes in any civil court except in rare case when Centre gives the assent. AFSPA has its roots in the Armed Forces Special Powers Ordinance of 1942 promulgated by the British on August 15, 1942 to suppress the Quit India Movement. In 2004 Congress-led UPA government constituted the Jeevan Reddy Commission on AFSPA and the report submitted in 2005 recommended repeal of the law. However, the Congress has been ambivalent on it while BJP is all for it. On the other hand, though many parts of India, especially Naxal-infested states have witnessed terrible violence, the government of India did not invoke AFSPA in those areas. This inherent contradiction in dealing with similar situations in the mainland states vis-à-vis the north east and Jammu and Kashmir also reveals how Delhi looks at the issue of maintenance of public order.

DailyDevotion “My Rainbow in the Cloud”

I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. —Genesis 9:13 It is the will of God that human beings should get into a right-standing relationship with Him, and His covenants are designed for this purpose. Why doesn’t God save me? He has accomplished and provided for my salvation, but I have not yet entered into a relationship with Him. Why doesn’t God do everything we ask? He has done it. The point is— will I step into that covenant relationship? All the great blessings of God are finished and complete, but they are not mine until I enter into a relationship with Him on the basis of His covenant. Waiting for God to act is fleshly unbelief. It means that I have no faith in Him. I wait for Him to do something in me so I may trust in that. But God won’t do it, because that is not the basis of the God-and-man relationship. Man must go beyond the physical body and feelings in his covenant with God, just as God goes beyond Himself in reaching out with His covenant to man. It is a question of faith in God— a very rare thing. We only have faith in our feelings. I don’t believe God until He puts something tangible in my hand, so that I know I have it. Then I say, “Now I believe.” There is no faith exhibited in that. God says, “Look to Me, and be saved…” (Isaiah 45:22). When I have really transacted business with God on the basis of His covenant, letting everything else go, there is no sense of personal achievement— no human ingredient in it at all. Instead, there is a complete overwhelming sense of being brought into union with God, and my life is transformed and radiates peace and joy.

Post-mortem

A kick to the belly Human Rights violation by the police and security forces

O

ting is a village located approximately 25 kms away from Mon Town, the Administrative Headquarters of Mon District in Nagaland. Bordering it are Tiru, Pongkong, Longlam and Wangla. The Tiru valley which has made news in the last decade (due to the discovery of coal and its mining) is a landed boundary shared and called by the names Upper (Pongkong) Tiru and Lower (Oting) Tiru. The Tiru valley and it’s adjoining Borjan, Naganimora area holds tertiary reserves of coal which are mined by the people indigenously. The method of mining popularly known as ‘rat-hole’ mining is commonly practised, and the locals therein work in the mines with basic tools such as hoes, pick-axes and other shovelling equipments. This mining and it’s related activities has become a basic part of household economy where by men as well as women, young and capable, all take part in the mining activity to sustain their families in the dry winter season. It is the season where people are on a break after the harvesting of their jhum fields and the new field is not slashed and burned. In the few weeks of break from agricultural activities many people actively work in these coallery with the hope to make money to pay off their dues, save up for the upcoming academic session, for the upcoming festivities of Christmas, the New year so on. On that fateful day the people of Oting went to their usual work place. To earn for their family, to warm their tummies, to save for their family, children and for the future. Such were the lives, hopes and dreams of the simple village folks of Oting who wanted nothing more than to improve their livelihood. On the evening of 4th December these simple folks were killed, as if in a battlefield were these young men slayed with the spray of bullets. The security personnels (21st Para Special Forces) fired indiscriminately at the mini pick-up truck that was carrying no less than 6-8 individuals, killing 6 on the spot and critically injuring 2 others who later succumbed to the injury. It was not a blunder, it was murder in cold blood. When they killed those innocent young men, not only are they wiping out one life from the face of the earth but cutting off the livelihood of many in these families who depended on their labour and earnings. It is not just a bullet wound killing but a kick on the belly of the poor, who wanted nothing more than to put food on the table for their loved ones. Let JUSTICE prevail. JC Konyak

uman rights cannot be longer considered as a distant, mysterious and secret specialty, but is to be regarded as a living subject. One that must be often engaged with and taken to heart, not just by academics, lawyers and activists, but by all human beings who believe in the basic rights that accrue to us by the very being, that is, the virtue of human beings. Human rights must be developed within acknowledging and understanding of particular peoples’ culture, community, ethos, customs and traditions. Human rights are generally accepted as moral rights for every individual which enables a person to lead a respectable and enriching life. Human right has legal connotations and are considered as vital for every human being to lead a full circle of life in a society. Human rights are to be enjoyed by all person for the fullest development of his/her personality just by virtue by being a human, irrespective of cast, class, high, low, gender, nationality etc. There are different perceptions about the development of human rights. One may say that human rights are the rights which cannot be divided, cannot be taken by anyone or human rights are universal which knows no borders and are fundamental. But to some human rights are not considered absolute. Whereas, again to some human rights can be achieved forcibly at the expense of others. However, human rights are restrained to some extent so as to safeguard and respect the rights of others to usher

in harmonious atmosphere in the society. Yet, Nagaland like any other North Eastern states has faced serious violations of human rights since decades and decades together. Therefore, the concept of human rights, should not however, be frozen in time rather be a dynamic principle and thus, capable of adopting a myriad complex and changing global society. Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958, which has been extended till December, 2021, in Nagaland is a long pending demand of political parties. Human rights are still a raging debated issue. AFSPA which gives special power to army has committed unforgettable atrocities to the Naga people since, independence and is a burdening nightmare till now. Another Black Day of the Naga People, December 4, 2021, the Oting village incident of Mon who can forget ! Oh my Oting brethrens my heart bleeds and mourns for you! What were your last thoughts when the bullets silenced you forever on that cold evening at the hands of the merciless by security forces? The Supreme Court appointed Hedge Commission demanding repeal of AFSPA but still shows the picture of the failure of both the democracy and the government. In Jammu and Kashmir AFSPA which was imposed in the 1980s can file First Information Report (FIR), but in North East which has been in existence since 1950s cannot do so. The question here is why one country and two laws. Why this discrimination

and differential treatment when it comes to the North East people because even Article 15 of the constitution guarantees Prohibition of Discrimination on ground of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth. This behaviour in itself is a gross violation of India’s constitution. The write up is an attempt for initiating of peoples to peoples dialogue. Also, to discuss the gross violations of human rights particularly of the Naga people and more importantly how these rights are violated. The required right to be exercised by the person for his/ her development should not be restricted, since denial for progressive growth will lead to the violation of human rights. AFSPA (1958) and Violations of Human Rights Despite the existence of constitutional safeguards, declarations, covenants, conventions, statutory bodies etc. there are many reported and unreported gross violations of human rights. Masses have been complaining of human rights violations committed particularly by the central and the state government agencies such as police, army, and the para-military forces. Besides these people have been complaining of the atrocities committed by the non-state actors which are prevalent in the North Eastern states. Denial for the rights of the indigenous people and the right to self determination movement are rampant. Taking us to backt the workshop, North East Indigenous Tribal Peoples Forum (NEITPF), held in Itanagar on April, 1-2,

On 65th Death Anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (From previous issue) Reservations are just part of affirmative action. Even US, Japan, Russia have affirmative action which gives equality measures to some race, minorities or tribes. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was never against any religion they were against social discrimination and socially wrong things. He even many time criticized about Islam; he once said that while Islam speaks of “brotherhood”, the practice of slavery and caste discrimination were rampant in Muslim society in South Asia, such as the Ashraf/Ajlaf caste divide and the severe discrimination against the Arzal castes or Dalit Muslim untouchables. Thus it states that he was highly critical of the practice of the untouchability in Indian Muslim Society and was speaking of reforming social evils both in Hinduism and Muslim society. But the irony is that many people still wants to see his great contribution through the mirror of Reservation and appeasement towards dalit. He is considered to be “Architect of Modern India” or “Father of modern India” because of his robust economic policies which have saved India even in the times of great Economic Depressions. Be it the founding guidelines of the RBI or the Principles of Free Trade, Dr. Ambedkar has given all the best for our Nation. Many other contribution of Babasaheb Ambedkar for building nation like as: Reduction in Factory Working Hours (8 hours duty): Today the working hours in India per day is about 8 hours. Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar was the Savior of Labors in India. He brought 8 hours duty in India and change the working time from 14 hours to 8 hours became a light for workers in India. He did this in 1942 by confronting britishers policies towards Indian labors

and peasants. Indian Factory Act. National Employment Agency (Employment Exchange) Employees State Insurance (ESI): ESI helps the workers with medical care, medical leave, physically disabled during working injuries as compensation Insurance for providing various facilities. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar enacted and brought it for the benefit of workers. Actually India only brought ‘Insurance Act’ as the first nation among the East Asian countries. Credit goes to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. RBI was conceptualized as per the guidelines, working style and outlook presented by Dr Ambedkar Now there are many other things like Hindu code bill, trade union etc. from which Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar contributed for betterment of whole nation. This type of his contribution effectively affects each and every citizen of India till today whether he is SC, ST,OBC, uppercaste, Muslim or Buddhist. Thus he never gave any particular community edge or preferred some community more. He just gave each and every person equal rights irrespective of gender, religion, caste, creed or society. Scheduled Caste Welfare in India Scheduled castes are those castes/races in the country that suffer from extreme social, educational and economic backwardness arising out of age-old practice of untouchability and certain others on account of lack of infrastructure facilities and geographical isolation, and who need special consideration for safeguarding their interests and for their accelerated socio-economic development. These communities were notified as Scheduled Castes as per provisions contained in Clause 1 of Article 341 of the Constitution. Constitutional mechanism for upliftment of

Scheduled Castes The deep concern of the framers of the Constitution for the uplift of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes is reflected in the elaborate constitutional mechanism set-up for their uplift. Article 17 abolishes Untouchability. Article 46 requires the State ‘to promote with special care the educational and economic interests of the weaker sections of the people, and, in particular, of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes, and to protect them from social injustice and all forms of exploitation. Article 335 provides that the claims of the members of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes shall be taken into consideration, consistently with the maintenance of efficiency of administration, in the making of appointments to services and posts in connection with the affairs of the Union or of a State.  Article 15(4) refers to the special provisions for their advancement. Article 16(4A) speaks of “reservation in matters of promotion to any class or classes of posts in the services under the State in favour of SCs/STs, which are not adequately represented in the services under the State’. Article 338 provides for a National Commission for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes with duties to investigate and monitor all matters relating to safeguards provided for them, to inquire into specific complaints and to participate and advise on the planning process of their socio-economic development etc. Article 330 and Article 332 of the Constitution respectively provide for reservation of seats in favour of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in the House of the People and in the legislative assemblies of the States. Under Part IX relating to the Panchayats and

Part IXA of the Constitution relating to the Municipalities, reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in local bodies has been envisaged and provided. The Constitution of India has prescribed, protection and safeguards for the Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and other weaker sections; either specially or the way of insisting on their general rights as citizens; with the object of promoting their educational and economic interests and removing social disabilities. These social groups have also been provided institutionalized commitments through the statutory body, the National Commission of SCs. The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment is the nodal Ministry to oversee the interests of the Scheduled Castes. Anybody who reads the Assembly to debates will be struck by Dr. Ambedkar’s keenness to place on the Statute Book as many laws benefiting the labour as possible. Whatever measures taken by him was never delayed. He also never indulged those in any controversial issues. Some decisions are the out come of a long process, some show results much later. Undoubtedly, Dr. Ambedkar will and should be long remembered, because of his efficient contribution and work he had done. His work is no longer remaining in pen and paper. What is most worthy is the action. As the clichés goes on: “Action speaks louder than words.” His experiences made him raise the slogan ‘Educate, Organise and Agitate to liberate the oppressed and restore their deprived rights. Dr. Ambedkar was born in 14th April of 1891 and died on 6th December of 1956. People very respectfully called him ‘Babasaheb’. Jai Bhim****** Jai Bharat ***** (Concluded) Dr. Kulendra Patni Ambedkar

1995. The workshop pointed out that; i. “The indigenous peoples of the region who have their own distinctive identity, culture, ethos, own way of life and self governing system are today suffering from political, economic and social discrimination and being systematically marginalised and pushed to non-dominant entity in the present political system of India which is alien to them.” ii. “The unabated influx of foreigners and also internal migration from other parts of the country and settlement of refugees, etc. in the traditional homelands of the indigenous people are increasingly threatening their political, economic, social, and cultural identity in their own homelands.” iii. “A situation is arising where the so-called mainstream ruling elite are treating the homelands of indigenous peoples as their internal colonies and adopting colonial behaviour towards genuine movements of indigenous/ tribal people.” iv. “The economic resources of the indigenous peoples are being indiscriminately plundered and destroyed in the name of so called development by logging, mining, etc.” v. “The independence of indigenous peoples on land, forest and water bodies, their settlement and rights has been completely ignored. The Government of India always acts arbitrarily on all these issues.” (To be concluded) Dr. Toli Achumi, Assistant Professor, Yingli College, Longleng, Nagaland

Indian economy: Back on track and at pre-covid levels

F

rom negative growth rate of Gross Domestic Product Indian economy has got momentum to come out and recovery gathered pace India has staged a smart recovery and the growth momentum is strong. India’s economy continued to expand after having dealt with the economic disruption seen during the covid-19 aided lockdown. The Indian economy remained on track to post the fastest growth among major economies this year as its GDP expanded by a better-than-expected 8.4 per cent in the July-September quarter to cross pre-pandemic levels led by a low base of (-) 7.4 per cent in the corresponding period last year as per the data by the national statistical office. In value terms, the GDP stood at Rs 35,73,451 crore in July-September 2021-22, higher than the Rs 35,61,530 crore in the corresponding period of the 2019-20 financial year. This is the fourth consecutive quarter of positive growth after a two-quarter negative growth witnessed last year. This number is important because it captures a phase that sits in between a sharp recovery after the second Covid-19 wave battered growth earlier in the year and the news of the new variant, which bring with it fresh uncertainties. Second, it might offer an indication of how broad-based the recovery has been. And third, it would offer some guidance on what most analysts cite as a positive during the quarter — higher government spending in September and the boost from the reopening gains amplified by festive spending. According to the NSO data, gross value added (GVA) growth in the manufacturing sector accelerated to 5.5 per cent in the second quarter of 2021-22, compared to a contraction 1.5 per cent a year ago. Farm sector GVA growth was up at 4.5 per cent, compared to 3 per cent growth earlier. Construction sector GVA grew by 7.5 per cent compared to a degrowth of 7.2 per cent earlier. Mining sector grew by 15.4 per cent, as against a contraction of 6.5 per cent. Electricity, gas, water supply and other utility services segment posted growth of 8.9 per cent in the second quarter of this fiscal, against 2.3 per cent expansion a year ago. On the demand side, the sequential improvement has largely been broad-based, across private consumption, investment and exports, although with imports also rising, net exports’ contribution to GDP growth fell to -4.4pp in Q3 from -3.6pp in Q2. On the supply side, GVA growth surpassed expectations at 8.5% y-o-y. The services posted stellar growth of close to 10% y-o-y (9.2% q-o-q, sa in Q3 vs -12.8% in Q2), with the unorganised labour-intensive sectors. But there were still many worrying areas, particularly the insipid private consumption spending that still languished below pre-COVID levels along with activity in employment-intensive sectors like construction and contact-intensive sectors like retail and hotels. The Indian economy is definitely showing signs of emerging from the COVID-19 induced economic setback. High-frequency indicators such as IIP, PMI & core sector data also point to improvement in economic sentiment. However, a sustained economic recovery will require all major sectors to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels. Prof Mithilesh Kumar Sinha, Nagaland University, Lumami

GHAZIABAD, DEC 6 (IANS): Former Shia Waqf Board chief Wasim Rizvi has converted to Hinduism after renouncing Islam. The conversion ceremony was conducted by Mahant Narasimha Ananda Saraswati of Dasna temple in Ghaziabad and Rizvi will now be known as Harbir Narayan Singh Tyagi. Rizvi drew his entire community’s wrath after he moved the Supreme Court appealing to it to remove 26 verses of the Quran, claiming that they encourage terrorism. Muslim clerics expelled Rizvi from Islam for his “objectionable comments”

against the religion. Talking to mediapersons after his conversion, he said: “Being Hindu is a lifestyle. Anyone can change his religion easily by legal means but it is not possible to become completely Hindu by going to the temple. For this, a complete process has to be adopted.” He said “From today onwards, I will only work for Hindutva” and claimed that none of the other religions had so many qualities as Hinduism. “Muslims do not vote for any political party, they vote against Hinduism and to defeat Hindus,” he said.

“Your visit to India is a reflection of your commitment to ties with India,” the prime minister said. Putin said both sides continue to cooperate on global issues and the positions of the two sides on many issues have similarities. “Naturally, we are concerned about everything that has to do with ter-

NEW DELHI, DEC 6 (PTI): Resident doctors of the Centre-run RML, Safdar jung and Lady Hardinge hospitals boycotted all routine and emergency services from Monday in support of a nationwide protest called by the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) against the delay in NEET-PG 2021 counselling. In a letter to Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, the FORDA on December 4 had said healthcare institutions across the country are running short of an adequate workforce of resident doctors, with no admission in the current academic year yet. “With the possibility of future COVID-19 pandemic wave looming large, the situation will be disastrous for the healthcare sector with its bearing on the country’s population,” it said. “There seems to be no initiative or measure taken yet for expediting the (NEET-PG) counselling. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has said that it will not have any major events to mark the day, but was focused on the construction of the Ram temple. VHP working president Alok Kumar in a statement said, “6th December is a big day for the whole country. That’s why VHP branch Bajrang Dal celebrates 6th December as ‘Shaurya Diwas’. Just like in the past there are programmes and events to mark the day. For seat adjustment, we will go and I cannot tell you the numbers (of seats each party will contest),” he said. He said he would request both the BJP and Dhindsa’s Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt) to pick “winners”. “If Dhindsa’s party puts up a winning candidate (from a particular constituency), then I will support him and the BJP too will support, I am sure. In its letter to the medical superintendent, the Safdarjung hospital RDA said it continued a symbolic protest in a silent manner after a meeting with the Union health minister on November 27, “respecting the verbal assurance given by him”. “However, as per the notification released on November 30, the Ministry of Social Justice has asked for a period of three weeks to submit its report in the Supreme Court, which is not consistent with the verbal assurance given to us regarding expediting this process,” it said. “Due to non-responsiveness and indifference of the government and the authorities concerned, unfortunately, we are left with no other option than boycotting the emergency services from Monday. The onus of any unfortunate incident arising due to the circumstances affecting the healthcare will be on the authorities concerned,” the RDA said.

early hearing on NEET-PG 2021

NEW DELHI, DEC 6 (IANS): Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday met the protesting doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) hospital in the national capital. The resident doctors of five hospitals in Delhi are protesting for the past 10 days against the delay in the National Eligibility-cumEntrance Test (NEET)-PG 2021. Mandaviya held a meeting with representatives of Resident Doctors’ Associations (RDAs) of various hospitals in Delhi at the RML. The doctors were assured in the meeting that the Union government will press for an early hearing of the matter pending before the Supreme Court. The apex court had held several hearings in the matter earlier this year. The next date of hearing is scheduled for January 2022. Ajay Kumar, Vice-

President, RDA, RML, said, “We have not been given a written assurance by the Union Health Minister.” The Minister has said if no action is taken on Monday by the Union government, another meeting will be held with him on Monday evening, Kumar added. A decision on the strike by the resident doctors will be taken after the meeting on Monday evening, he said. However, the Minister has not specified a timeline when the Centre’s representative would appeal to the Chief Justice of India in writing for an early hearing. At present, there is a shortage of one-third of doctors in postgraduate courses which has led to additional workload for doctors. The doctors are seeking an early hearing of the matter before the apex court so that a decision could be made concerning the vacant posts in hospitals.

NSF general secretary Siipuni Ng Philo, said the hypocrisy was that on one hand the State government claims that it had been recommending repealing of the Act to Centre, but the Act was still there. He dared the state government to prove itself that it was serious on repealing AFSPA from the State by convening a special Assembly session. Referring to the confrontations with by security forces at three different locations during the bandh, Tep suspected that it could have been a coordinated move to provoke the peaceful bandh supporters. Out of the 61 companies that hit the markets till October of the current fiscal, 34 entities were Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that a large number of manufacturing and service sector companies are coming up for listing. “IPOs (Initial Public Offerings) are being brought by the companies regularly this year, and the amount raised in the current financial year till the month of October 2021, has surpassed the amount raised in the last financial year,” she said. constructions”. To a supplementary question on whether the Paytm IPO has caused problems for investors, the minister replied in the negative. First of all, there is an impression that the IPO of One97 Communications has caused problems for investors, but no problems have been caused for them, the minister said. “It (IPO) was subscribed more than what they (company) went for,” she pointed out. The IPO of One97 Communications received bids for 9.14 crore equity shares against the offer size of 4.83 crore shares, according to information available with stock exchanges on November 10. The price band was fixed at Rs 2,0802,150 per share. The Rs 18,300 crore IPO was oversubscribed 1.89 times on the last day of India’s biggest share sale. However, the scrip made a weak debut on

the stock exchanges on November 18 and had tumbled over 27 per cent during the day from the issue price of Rs 2,150. A copy of the memorandum signed by AKM president Nungdokyanger Ao and general secretary Nekmi Longkumer that was made available to the press condemned the inhuman incident of slaughtering unarmed citizens of Oting village by the Indian armed forces. AKM demanded immediate removal of AFSPA that allowed security forces to unleash terror on innocent civilians when there was already a ceasefire and peaceful negotiations were on. The memorandum demanded an impartial and independent judicial enquiry into the incident to bring the perpetrators to book immediately, besides removal of security forces from civilian areas. It also appealed to the governor to intervene promptly and restore democracy in the State.

Xi calls for tightening controls over Suu Kyi convicted in further blow to democracy religious affairs to boost national security

BANGKOK, DEC 6 (AP): Aung San Suu Kyi, the civilian leader of Myanmar who was ousted in a de facto coup this year, was convicted of incitement and another charge Monday and sentenced to four years in prison — in a trial widely criticised as a further effort by the country’s military rulers to reverse the democratic gains of recent years. Hours later, state television reported that her sentence had been reduced to two years in an amnesty and indicated she would not serve it in prison but instead where she is currently being detained. The convictions serve to cement a dramatic reversal of fortunes for the Nobel Peace laureate, who spent 15 years under house arrest for resisting the Southeast Asian nation’s generals but then agreed to work alongside them when they promised to usher in democratic rule. Monday’s verdict was

Aung San Suu Kyi

the first in a series of cases brought against 76-year-old Suu Kyi since her arrest on Feb. 1, the day the army seized power and prevented her National League for Democracy party starting a second term in office. If found guilty of all the charges she faces, Suu Kyi could be sentenced to more than 100 years in prison. She is being held by the military at an unknown location. The court earlier offered a 10-month reduction in the sentence for time served, according to a legal official, who relayed the verdict to The Associated Press and who

insisted on anonymity for fear of being punished by the authorities. The state TV report did not mention any credit for time served. The army seized power claiming massive voting fraud in the November 2020 election, which Suu Kyi’s party won in a landslide. Independent election observers did not detect any major irregularities. Opposition to the takeover sprang up almost immiedately and remains strong, with armed resistance spreading after the military’s violent crackdown on peaceful protests. The verdict could inflame tensions even further. The cases against Suu Kyi are widely seen as contrived to discredit her and keep her from running in the next election since the constitution bars anyone sent to prison after being convicted of a crime from holding high office or becoming a lawmaker. Yanghee Lee, the former U.N. Special Rap-

porteur on Human Rights in Myanmar, described the charges as well as the verdict as “bogus,” while U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet call the procedings a “sham trial.” Rights groups also deplored the verdict, with Amnesty International calling it “the latest example of the military’s determination to eliminate all opposition and suffocate freedoms in Myanmar.” Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director for Human Rights Watch, said the trial was just the beginning of a process that “will most likely ensure that Suu Kyi is never allowed to be a free woman again.” As is typical, China, a neighbor that has maintained friendly ties with Myanmar’s military leaders, declined to criticize the verdict. Beijing hopes “all parties in Myanmar will bear in mind the long-term interests of the country, narrow differences and

carry on the hard-won democratic transition process,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told reporters Monday. Suu Kyi is widely revered at home for her role in the country’s pro-democracy movement — and was long viewed abroad as an icon of that struggle, epitomized by her 15 years under house arrest. But since her release in 2010 and return to politics, she has been heavily criticized for the gamble she made: showing deference to the military while ignoring and, at times, even defending rights violations — most notably a 2017 crackdown on Rohingya Muslims that rights groups have labeled genocide. While she has disputed allegations that army personnel killed Rohingya civilians, torched houses and raped women and she remains immensely popular at home, that stance has tarnished her reputation abroad.

BEIJING, DEC 6 (PTI): Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for further measures to tighten the state’s control over religious affairs in the country, including the “sinicization” of faiths which broadly means bringing them in line with the policies of the ruling Communist Party. An official white paper released in 2019 said China has about 200 million believers - majority were Buddhists in Tibet. Others included 20 million Muslims, 38 million Protestant Christians and 6 million Catholic Christians; besides 140,000 places of worship. Xi, 68, head of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the powerful military and the Presidency and widely expected to remain in power for life, has been calling for “sinicization” of religions, reorienting them to function under the guidance of the CPC which ideologically

remains atheist. “It is necessary to improve the democratic supervision of religious leaders, and push for the rule of law in religious work, and carry out in-depth publicity and education about the rule of law,” Xi told a national conference on work related to religious affairs held during the weekend here. The conference, attended by the country’s top leadership, was the first since 2016 and sets the parameters on China’s religious affairs and their regulation over the next few years, according to experts.

In his address, Xi said China will further promote “sinicization of religion”, with a focus on strengthening control of online religious affairs, pointing out that it is imperative to uphold the principle of developing religions in the Chinese context, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The party’s policy on freedom of religious belief should be fully and faithfully implemented and religious groups should stand as a bridge and a bond connecting the party and the government with people from religious circles and the vast religious believers, he said. The m eeting took place in the backdrop of widespread accusations of repressive control on Muslims and Christians in China, as well as the country’s increasing tight supervision over religions, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported.

WELLINGTON, DEC 6 (AP): The leader of the Solomon Islands has survived a vote of no-confidence in Parliament following riots in the capital city last month. Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare told lawmakers in a fiery 90-minute speech on Monday that he’d done nothing wrong and would not bow down to “the forces of evil” or to “Taiwan’s agents”. At one point he picked up his chair and banged it on the Parliament floor to emphasise a point. Opponents accused him and his government of lying, looting and using Chinese money to cling to power during a debate over a no-confidence motion brought by opposition leader Matthew Wale. In the end, Sogavare easily had the numbers, winning 32 votes to 15, with two abstentions. The riots in Honiara grew from a peaceful protest and highlighted longsimmering regional rivalries, economic problems and concerns about the country’s increasing links with China.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2021

Organisations condemn Dec 4 Oting massacre; demand repeal of AFSPA

DIMAPUR, DEC 6 (NPN): Killing of over a dozen civilians by security forces on December 4, 2021 in an area between Oting and Tiru village under Mon district continued to draw strong condemnations from various civil society organizations, t r i b a l b o d i e s, s t u d e n t bodies, political parties etc with many organisations demanding repeal of The Ar med Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958. NSCW: Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) has stated that the sanity of security forces involved in the shooting of innocent civilians at Oting, Mon, must be questioned and condemned in the highest order. The commission said that the merciless shooting of young men was inhumane and insult to all Nagas. “This is a National shame!,” NSCW said in a press release, adding that in this day and age, the commission cannot imagine that such callous and mindless massacre of innocent civilians could happen. NSCW demanded that justice must be delivered at all cost within a specific time frame, saying Nagas cannot be gunned down at will. NSCW also called upon all the women organisations and hohos to condemn “this inhumane and cowardly act.” It urged the women bodies to assist the bereaved families and those injured in this highly condemnable incident. ABCC: Angami Baptist Church Council (ABCC) vehemently condemning the incident said that the draconian law of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which legitimized killing on mere suspicion, has prematurely ended so many precious lives again. In a press release, ABCC executive director Rev. Dr. V. Atsi Dolie said that the incident was a reminder of what “our older folks have faced in yesteryears simply for the love of their land and people”, adding that nobody knows how much longer the Nagas have to live under such law. We l c o m i n g t h e “admission of blunder” by the army, ABCC, however, said it was difficult to imagine what justice would look like under AFSPA. ABCC conveyed deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the Konyak people. SKH: Sumi Kukami Hoho (SKH) has vehemently condemned the “inhumane act” per petrated on the innocent civilians of Oting village. In a press release, SKH president H Kashito Ye p t h o m i a n d ge n e r a l secretary Hetoho S Zhimomi said that no justification could condone the “blatant and the barbaric action” of the Indian Army under the guise of the Draconian AFSPA. The hoho affirmed solidarity with Konyak brothers and ENPQ and further convey condolencesa to the families of the bereaved and wish speedy recovery of those injured. Paiwang: State minister Paiwang Lonyka expressed shock and deep concern over the unfortunate incident that occurred on December 4 between Oting and Tiru, wherein 13 innocent civilians were killed in ambush by 12 Para SF in cold blood and also leaving several grievously injured. He said that no amount of words could express the cowardly act to justify the high handedness of the security forces involved in the shoot out. Paiwang said he was confident that the high-level SIT constituted by the state government to investigate the case and leave no stone unturned to ensure justice and bring the perpetrators to book. H e f u r t h e r ex t e n d condolences to the bereave families and wished speedy recovery to those injured and also appealed all sections to maintain peace. NJCF: Nagaland Joint Christian Forum has condemned the killing of innocent villagers at Oting village in Mon District. N J C F Rev. D r. N. Paphino while conveying condolences to the bereaved f a m i l i e s a l s o s t r o n g ly condemned the unrestrained acts of the security forces, who were placed to safeguard the innocent lives. The action K Y M C

of the para-military cannot just be whitewashed as “a mistake”, it stated. It further said that the Nagas and the civil societies had always protested against the draconian AFSPA, that has emboldened such an action without a second thought. Stating that such incident was bound to happen, NJCF urged gover nment of India to seriously take note and repeal the Act. It said that people “cannot continue to live in a war like situation while we try to befriend and propagate peace. Life belongs to God and not to the people who hold the law and power.” NJCF further called upon all to be calm and Christians to pray for peace in our land. ULSP: United Sangtam Likhüm Pümji has condemned expressed deep pain and anguish over the unprecedented killing of countless innocent daily wage labourers. USLP president T. Seopi Sangtam and general s e c r e t a r y P. A c h u m s e Sangtam said that when Nagas were yearning for peace and tranquillity, security force resorting to such gruesome act of randomly killing innocent citizens has only exposed the real intention and bringing back history of dark past. USLP demanded thorough investigation at the highest level and to bring out the truth and book all those erring security personnel responsible. Further, USLP directed all bonafide Sangtam citizens, individuals, groups to abstain and refrain from taking part in the ongoing hornbill festival in solidarity with the victims’ families and Konyak brethren. USLP conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed that Almighty grant solace and the departed souls to rest in eternal peace and also speedy recovery of those injured. NPF Women Wing: NPF Central Women Wing along with all its divisions and Manipur state unit condemned the “horrific murder of our brothers” at Oting Village under Mon district amidst the festive season. The women wing called upon competent authority to immediately book the culprits while also demanding for immediate repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act(1958). Expressing solidarity with the people of Oting and the Konyaks in general, the wing also extended deepest condolences and prayer to the bereaved family and the injured for speedy recovery. CNSA: Central Nagaland Students’ Association (CNSA) strongly condemned the killing of innocent Naga youth civilian at Oting by Indian security forces. CNSA said that exorbitant and unbridled use of military force by the Indian security forces on Nagas was not only a violation of the most basic human rights but also a blatant violation of the fundamental rights. It further urged the Centre to withdraw the draconian AFSPA and Disturbed Area Act. CNSA further conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. LSU: Lotha Students’ Union condemned the gr uesome murder of innocent Naga youths at Oting by the Indian security forces. LSU president Ashanthung Humtsoe and cultural secretary Noyingbeni M. Odyuo also echoed the same concern as CNSA against unbridled military force by Indian security forces. It also demanded repeal of AFSPA which has been terrorizing the Naga populace. LSU further extended condolences to the bereaved families members. DDGBA: Dimapur District GBs Association said it was shocked over the horrific incident where 13 innocent villagers were gunned down besides injuring two others. D D G BA p r e s i d e n t Khehovi V Chophi and general secretary Ponghok Phom said the killing daily wage earners for no fault or reason was nothing but an act of terrorism which security forces have been perpetrating on innocent Nagas since long time.

It conveyed condolences to the bereaved family members and also prayed recovery of those injured in the incident. NC: The Naga Club has condemned in the strongest term the blatant killing of innocent daily wage earners, in an ambush by the Indian paramilitary forces, as if they were on a war path confronting them. Recalling the terror and barbaric violence perpetrated against the Naga since the early part of 1950s, NC president Kuolachalie Seyie and general secretary KN Mhonthung Lotha said such reign of terror and barbaric violence continued and Nagas lost thousands of precious live including women and children, while many women raped, all houses including granaries burnt down, which went on unabated for several years, for their rejection to participate in the election. When the peace was in the offing at the intervention o f t h e N a g a Pe o p l e ’s Convention, NC said that the Indian Government, in its intent to continue to exercise the abuse of military power over the Nagas, promulgated the infamous “Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958”. NC therefore demanded revocation of AFSPA at all costs, before more innocent citizen perish. It also called upon Nagas to boycott any festival functions organised by the state government or government of India to express sorrow and sadness over the killing of innocent Naga villagers at Oting, Mon. India demolish NZ by 372 runs, claim series 1-0

MUMBAI, DEC 6 (PTI): India carried out a decimation of New Zealand, winning the second Test by a recordbreaking 372-run margin to clinch the two-Test series 1-0 with comeback-man Jayant Yadav cleaning up the visiting team’s lower half on the fourth morning here on Monday. At exactly 10.13 am, 43 minutes to the start of the day, Ravichandran Ashwin (4/34) benefitted from a reflex stumping by Wriddhiman Saha and also completed his 300th wicket on Indian soil to finish the proceedings in a jiffy as New Zealand were all out for 167 in 56.3 overs. The margin of victory is India’s highest ever on home soil. For a team that had fought tooth and nail in Kanpur, the extra bounce and turn did pose familiar problems for the Kiwis in a match they will try to remember for Ajaz Patel’s 10-wicket heroics. “I think it was good to finish the series as winners, came close in Kanpur, not able to get that last wicket, had to work hard here. This result seems one-sided, but right through the series, we were made to work hard,” India coach Rahul Dravid said after the demolition act. “There have been

phases where we were behind and had to fight back, credit to the team. Great to see the boys stepping up and taking their opportunities,” he added. Funnily, Patel bowled 73.5 overs across two innings for New Zealand and his team, in total, batted 84.4 overs which would signify abject capitulation. Apart from this, there was nothing much to write home about in an insipid performance from a usually gutsy side. Starting the day at 140 for five, the victory target of 540 was simply out of reach for the Black Caps but Jayant, who had not looked in good rhythm on the third evening, suddenly found his mojo with a career-best spell

of 14-4-49-4 having last played a Test match in 2017. “In the morning, the moisture in the wicket helped. You could see the difference between last evening and this morning, it was getting much more bite,” Yadav said explaining his performance. “It was just important to get the ball in the right areas,” he added. The win in which India ticked almost all the boxes save their middleo r d e r wo e s w i l l g i ve skipper Virat Kohli lot of confidence going into the away series against South Africa starting in three weeks’ time. It was Yadav’s first five-wicket haul in a Test and considering that he

hasn’t had a great run in first-class cricket, plagued by injuries and poor form, head coach Rahul Dravid’s confidence in his abilities certainly bore fruit. He didn’t turn the ball a lot but bowling from Tata End, he used the rough to good effect as he pitched it on the cracks and got extra bounce bringing both inside and outside edges into the equation. R a c h i n R av i n d r a edged one to second slip after he was drawn forward by the flight while Kyle Jamieson tried to play an off-break on the back-foot to be plumb in-front. It was a delivery for which he should have used his giant stride to smother the spin. Tim Southee went

for a slogger’s hoick to be bowled and Kanpur Test’s hero Will Somerville gave a simple bat pad catch at forward short-leg. While the series will definitely be a confidence booster but at the same time, everyone knows what awaits in South Africa and the most pressing issue will be the lack of form of three key batters in skipper Kohli, his vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane and No.3 Cheteshwar Pujara. On current form, a l l t h r e e c a n’ t b e accommodated in the playing eleven and with Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill showing good form and Hanuma Vihari, with some useful knocks, waiting in the wings, there are some tough selection calls to be taken. Another concern is veteran pacer Ishant Sharma, who no longer fits in the four-pronged pace attack with Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj way ahead of him. Kohli would expect that Ravindra Jadeja’s forearm injury isn’t very serious as he would again be the sole spinner at least in Johannesburg and Centurion if not Cape Town where they might use two tweakers. Ashwin bowled well but he might again have to sit out in overseas conditions.

A host Philadelphia side de pleted with 11 players lost to Covid-19 safety protocols battled into the dying moments before Icelandic midfielder Gudmundur Thorarinsson took a long pass and flicked on to the 19-year-old South American to net the gamewinning goal. Former Celtic manager Ronny Delia’s City siders stretched their unbeaten streak to eight consecutive matches to capture the Eastern Conference title and advanced into Saturday’s MLS Cup final against the host Portland Timbers. “ I d o n’ t t h i n k we played ver y well,” Norwegian manager Delia said. “Offensively we played very well but defensively we looked very tired. all season and here we are again.” Philadelphia’s Nathan Harriel nodded a header over the crossbar in the 87th minute, a heartbreaker just before the NYCFC counterattack delivered the winner. Philadelphia placed 11 players into MLS Covid-19 protocol on the eve of the match, including two goalkeepers and most of the backline, leaving the squad with only 17 players for a workout. The Union added three players under extreme hardship r ules, but the short-handed side walked onto its home pitch clearly unfancied despite a better regular-season record than

City.

Philadelphia seized the lead in the 63rd minute when Hungarian midfielder Daniel Gazdag lofted a centering pass into the box and New York City’s A l e x a n d e r C a l l e n s, a Peruvian defender, deflected the ball into his own goal. Just as Union supporters were raising their volume, City answered with the equalizer in the 65th minute off a rightfooted volley by Argentine midfielder Maxi Moralez. Union goalkeeper Matt Freeze, a hometown product who usually serves as a third-string reserve, made a diving save in the 76th minute to keep his side level into the dying minutes.

J E D DA H ( S AU D I ARABIA), DEC 6 (IANS): Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton b e a t Re d B u l l ’s M a x Verstappen in a truly chaotic Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which was restarted twice and in which the two title rivals collided with each other once again in the 2021 season. In one of the most dramatic races in living memory, Hamilton and Verstappen went wheel to wheel on several occasions at the Jeddah Corniche street circuit, with the Briton crashing into the back of the Dutchman at one point after a misunderstanding over yielding a position. The two drivers are now level on points in the drivers’ championship, setting the stage for a winner-takes-all season finale in Abu Dhabi next weekend. Starting first and second on the grid, Hamilton and teammate Valtteri Bottas led away from Verstappen and looked comfortable at the front until their progress was halted on lap 10 after Mick Schumacher lost control of his Haas and slammed into the barrier, Xinhua reports. With the safety car immediately deployed, Hamilton and Bottas both came in for new tyres while

Max Verstappen abruptly slowed and Lewis Hamilton ran into him.

Verstappen elected to stay put, putting him in the lead but needing to make a pit stop at a later point. However, lady luck smiled on Verstappen and Red Bull when the race was then red-flagged on lap 13 in order to allow for lengthier repairs to be made to the barriers. Under F1 rules, drivers are able to change their tyres under red flag conditions, essentially giving Verstappen and others a free pit stop and ensuring that the Dutchman would line up for the standing restart on pole position, ahead of Hamilton and Bottas. The drama continued at the restart as Hamilton

G OA , D E C 6 (AGENCIES): Jamshedpur FC continued their unbeaten run in the season as they handed ATK Mohun Bagan their second consecutive defeat with a 2-1 win in the Indian Super League (ISL) here on Monday. The win took Jamshedpur to second spot in the points table while ATK Mohun Bagan slumped to fifth spot. Seiminlen Doungel (37th) scored the opener for the Men of Steel with a sublime finish from the right flank. Alex Lima (84th) scored the second after coming on as a substitute late in the second half. starting from the bench. Owen Coyle fielded a 4-4-2 formation while Antonio Lopes Habas chose his tried and tested 3-4-3

formation. As the match started, Eli Sabia straightaway went into the referee’s book by getting a yellow card in the fourth minute. At the stroke of the 33rd minute, Amrinder Singh saved a powerful left-footed low curling shot from Greg Stewart from the right flank. M o m e n t s l a t e r, Seiminlen Doungel found space on the edge of the box at the right flank and made no mistake in hitting the ball past Amrinder’s right side to give JFC the lead. Roy Krishna looked to have scored the equaliser in the 40th minute. His shot from a narrow-angle escaped TP Rehenesh’s grip and was rolling inside the goal but Eli Sabia was quick to react and cleared the ball from the line. Just before half-time, Boris Singh replaced the goal scorer Doungel who had to leave the pitch after

suffering an ankle injury. Roy Krishna received a yellow card for a challenge on Hartley which left the latter in some pain. The second half got off to a cagey start with both teams struggling to create clear scoring chances. At the hour mark, Habas brought on Prabir Das for Rathi and David Williams for McHugh to instill energy and fresh legs on the pitch. Jordan Murray and Narender Gahlot also made short cameos from the bench before the final whistle. Owen Coyle’s men defended their lead resolutely and secured an important win over last year’s runners-up. Jamshedpur FC will play Mumbai City FC on Thursday at the PJN Stadium, Fatorda while ATK Mohun Bagan await Chennaiyin FC’s challenge on Saturday at the same venue.

The victory in Mumbai also meant that India registered their 14th consecutive series win at home and 11th straight under Virat Kohli’s leadership. rubber, while Hamilton remained on his more durable but less grippy hard tyres. Quickly disposing of Ocon, Hamilton set about chasing after Verstappen and looked quicker than the Dutchman, but was unable to get close enough to pass until lap 37, when Verstappen went off track to defend against the Briton. More drama was to come the following lap when Verstappen was told to give the position back and slowed on the back straight, but Hamilton appeared to misunderstand his intentions and ran into the back of the Red Bull, with neither car suffering

significant damage. Though Verstappen remained in front, he was still obliged to cede the position, finally moving over on lap 43 and settling for second as his tyres faded. The Dutchman was also hit with a 10-second time penalty for his part in the collision between the two drivers, though this had no bearing on the final result. Behind the top two, Bottas pipped Ocon for third on the line, with McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo fifth ahead of Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri. The twin Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were seventh and e i g h t h , A l f a Ro m e o ’s Antonio Giovinazzi was ninth and Ricciardo’s teammate Lando Norris rounded out the top 10. With just next week’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix remaining in one of the most enthralling seasons in F1 history, Hamilton and Verstappen are tied on 369.5 points, though the Dutchman is in front with nine race wins to Hamilton’s eight. Bottas is assured of a third place finish with 218 points. In the constructors’ standings, Mercedes extend their lead to 587.5 points over Red Bull’s 559.5. Ferrari are third on 307.5 points.

India to host Denmark for next Davis Cup tie in March

NEW DELHI, DEC 6 (PTI): India have got their first home Davis Cup tie since February 2019 as they have been pitted against Denmark in World Group I contest, scheduled for March 4-5 next year. India travelled to Finland (2021), Croatia (2020) and Kazakhstan (2019, Pakistan tie) for their last three ties. India hosted Italy at home in February 2019 and lost 1-3 in Kolkata. Even though Denmark has a singles player in Holger Rune (103), who is higher-ranked than all the Indian players, it can still be considered a favourable draw for the hosts. It will be the first tie between the two nations since September 1984 when India won 3-2 at Aarhus. The two teams have n o t c l a s h e d mu c h a s

the only other time they played was in 1927 when Denmark whitewashed India 5-0 in the quarterfinal in Copenhagen. “Thank God, after many ties, we have got a home match. Previous two ties were tough for us, we played Croatia who made the Davis Cup finals. Then we played Finland and everyone thought Finland was an easy team, which was not the case,” India coach Zeeshan Ali told PTI. Zeeshan felt a lot would depend which players will be available for the tie. “The last time we did not have our number one player with us, then Yuki was down with injury. If we have a full strength team, if Sumit is fit by March and Yuki is also available, we have a very good chance of beating Denmark in India,” he said.
