Shah ‘regrets’ Dec 4 killings in Nagaland

NEW DELHI, DEC 6 (PTI): Expressing regret over the Nagaland firing incident, Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said a probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be completed within a month and asserted that all agencies must ensure such happenings do not recur while taking action against insurgents. Dissatisfied with the statement, opposition parties including the Congress, DMK, SP, BSP and the NCP walked out of the House. They said neither there was any mention of compensation nor of action against the guilty. In a statement in Lok Sabha, he said the government is keeping a close watch on the evolving situation and necessary measures are being taken to ensure peace and tranquillity in the region. 4-member AICC delegation to visit DIMAPUR, DEC 6 (NPN): All India Congress committee (AICC) has constituted a four-member delegation to visit Nagaland and report on the death of civilians in the firing incident in Mon district. The members will submit a report the Congress president within a week, Congress general secretary, KC Venugopal said. The four-member team incudes-- Congress general secretary Jitendra Singh, Dr. Ajoy Kumar (AICC Nagaland i/c) and two MPs- Gaurav Gogoi and Anto Antony. Meanwhile, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K. Therie also visited Mon and attended the mass funeral service. He also held meetings with party workers.

NCD calls for meeting today

DIMAPUR, DEC 6 (NPN): Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has convened a meeting with all Dimapur based mass civil society organization on December 7, at 11.30 a.m. at the Council’s conference hall, Dimapur According to NCD general secretary Thsapongkyu Sangtam, the meeting has been called in connection with the cold blooded murder of innocent civilians at Oting village by the Indian Army. NGBF asks state govt to call off Hornbill Festival

DIMAPUR, DEC 6 (NPN): Nagaland Gaonburah Federation (NGBF) has appealed to the State government to call off the ongoing Hornbill Festival immediately in solidarity with Naga victims who were brutally killed by Indian security forces. Federation president Sahlem Konyak and general secretary Shikuto Zalipu in a press release insisted that a clear message must be given to Government of India that “we Nagas are one and that (Cont’d on p-8) blood is thicker than water”.

Being representatives of grassroots people, they said the village chiefs deeply mourned the massacre of innocent sons and, in this hour of grief, they bestowed hope on the State government that justice would be delivered to the victims. The NGBF leaders asserted that the perpetrators of such atrocities should not take Nagas for granted and walk away easily after committing such a heinous crime that deserved international condemnation. SHILLONG, DEC 6: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma Monday said the National People’s Party stand against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has not changed and urged the Centre to repeal the draconian Act. “AFSPA has not given any results. AFSPA has been counterproductive and there has been more unrest and precious lives have been lost due to the Act...,” Sangma said.
