Revenge tourism to trigger  3rd Covid wave, warns ICMR has not yet accumulated to the levels as elsewhere in the country. Against the backdrop of increasing anticipation of the third wave in India, it is important to recognize the potential risks associated with such an escalation in travel,” it said. After considering mathematical models to ascertain the future course of the pandemic, ICMR warned that a sudden increase in population density due to incoming tourists or mass congregation because of either social, political or religious reasons can worsen the third-wave scenario. Making it necessary for tourist destination states to demand Covid negative tests or vaccination certificates, ICMR said vaccine status could also play an important role in eligibility to travel,

with some caveats. The recommendations prepared by Dr Balram Bhargava, director general, ICMR, and Dr Samiran Panda, head, epidemiology and communicable diseases, ICMR, were also published in the International Journal of Travel Medicine published by Oxford University Press. ICMR has recommended that people choose responsible travel instead of revenge travel. “Nonetheless, with the possibility of a severe third wave in India still looming, it remains critical to recognize and mitigate the risks involved. A shared sense of responsibility among visitors, residents and local authorities will go a long way towards protecting the welfare of the country as a whole,” the agency said.

CGBA against proposal to change GB nomenclature

NEW DELHI, OCT 6 (AGENCIES): Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has recommended tourism destinations such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the North East to strictly enforce Covid pandemic protocols and seek vaccination certificates and Covid-19 negative tests from visitors before allowing entry. The apex biomedical research body warned that the pandemic’s third wave could see cases surge by as much as 47% because of increasing leisure travel during the festive season and could even occur two weeks earlier than the previously estimated November peak. ICMR noted the impact on smaller states was less intense during the pandemic’s second wave. Among the

NEW DELHI, OCT 6 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Wednesday took suo motu cognisance of Lakhimpur Kheri violence in Uttar Pradesh and the case will be heard by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Thursday. Eight people including a journalist and farmers were mowed down allegedly by the car of Union minister of state for Home, Ajay Mishra Teni’s son Ashish Mishra while four were killed in the violence and arson that followed. Tourist destinations including NE asked to strictly enforce Covid protocols Although India doesn’t have national-level guidelines on domestic travel during, ICMR said it may be helpful for tourism-dependent states to receive guidance on how best they can mitigate travel-related risks. “These observations indicate increasing opportunities for transmission in areas where population-level immunity

district after initially saying no, and also released Vadra from three days of preventive detention. The day also saw an AAP delegation meet the grieving families in Lakhimpur and MoS Home Ajay Kumar Mishra calling on Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi for their first meeting since a murder case was registered against Mishra’s son for allegedly mowing down four farmers. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Cabinet expressed regret over the death of farmers in the violence at Lakhimpur Kheri, while the ruling allies here called for a statewide bandh on October 11 to protest against the incident in the Uttar Pradesh as they

sought to corner the BJP over the tragedy. Though no arrest has been made in the case so far, the FIR stated that Asish Mishra was driving the car and then after the car overturned, he got out from the car and opened fire and then went into hiding. Reports said that MoS Home, Ajay Mishra briefed Amit Shah that his son Ashish was not there in the car, a claim that he has been reiterating. The minister claimed that the car lost balance after it was attacked by stone pelters and as it flipped some protesters came under the car. He alleged that his driver was lynched and the car was set on fire. His son was not involved in this at all.

DIMAPUR, OCT 6 (NPN): Opposing the proposal to change the nomenclature of GBs, Chakhroma GB Association (CGBA) has said that appointment of GBs and its role and responsibilities had been practiced for the last 181 years in Naga villages much before introduction of Town Council/ Municipal Acts. In a press note, CGBA president Rokovitso Kuotsu and general secretary Thepfukuo Nagi that removing the nomenclature of GBs “does not hold water”, adding that the name GBs was not incorporated in Town or Municipal Acts, which had been in implementation barely for few years.

DC’s office will not be shifted: PHE minister HOME DEPTT CLARIFIES; CSOs DEMAND WRITTEN ASSURANCE DIMAPUR, OCT 6 (NPN): Against the backdrop of opposition from Dimapur-based CSOs to the proposed shifting of the office of deputy commissioner Dimapur from its present location to the new complex at Chümoukedima, the state government has virtually ceded to the demand when it was decided to withdraw the proposal. This was made known on Twitter by PHED minister Jacob Zhimomi. The minister tweeted that he had “met the CSOs of Dimapur district & discussed about the issues in the district. I am thankful to them for understanding d govt. Assured to them that DC HQ will be at Dmp. So the matter is laid to rest.” Civil Society Organisations’ (CSOs) Core Committee Against Shifting of DC’s Office, also confirmed the conclusion of the meeting. In a press release the core committee’s office acknowledged the affirmative response of the minister in the larger interest of the people. However, the committee reiterated that until the State government responded and notified to the CSO Core Committee in writing, the protest against shifting of the DC office will continue indefinitely. According to the Core Committee, they held a meeting with the PHED minister at his residence on Wednesday on the issue of shifting of the DC office. The Core Committee members expressed discontentment at the alleged lackadaisical attitude of the present dispensation in addressing the rights and demands of the people of Dimapur.

They clarified that the demands made in the memorandum and ultimatum were not against any particular community or place, but only insisted that the DC office should not be shifted elsewhere in any manner. They also conveyed to the minister that any commitment or assurance made by or on behalf of the gover nment should be in the form of an official notification. They

also demanded rescinding of the earlier impugned notification (no. GAB-8/ DMP/63/2100(Pt)/249, dated 07.09.2021) issued by the principal secretary (home) for shifting Office of the ADC, election, disaster management and other branch offices. CSOs said that Jacob had informed them that the government had never intended to shift the DC office anywhere else from the

Home dept keeps on hold Sep 7 order In view of the concerns expressed by various organisations, the State government has kept on hold the home department’s notification of September 7 vis-à-vis shifting some branches/cells from DC’s office Dimapur (DC) to the new complex at Chümoukedima, DIPR stated. Clarifying on the issue of posting ADC at Chümoukedima and related issues, the home department in a statement recalled that the State cabinet had decided in its meeting on March 11, 2021 to shift the DC office from the current location to the new complex at Chü-

moukedima, with the department being tasked to work out the phased schedules. However, on account of the reser vations expressed by various quarters, the cabinet decided on August 10 to post an ADC, EAC and sub-treasury office at the new complex at Chümoukedima with a view to provide greater convenience to the public and with a view to decongest the DC office. Accordingly, an additional officer was posted as ADC to function from the new complex and EAC Seithekima was transferred and entrusted with the additional responsibility of assisting

Officers, personnel of Dimapur forest division and others at the programme on Wednesday.

DIMAPUR: Dimapur forest division observed “wildlife week 2021” under the theme, “save life in wild” Wednesday at the conference hall of DFO with director Intangki National Park, T Aochuba as the guest of honour. A press release by the division stated that in his address, Aochuba asserted that conservation needs to be looked at from a broader perspective and that protection of wildlife was not just about protecting flora and fauna but was meant for the survival of all human beings. While it was the duty of every citizen to respond

to the call for wildlife conservation, Aochuba forest officials have greater responsibility towards wildlife conservation. He then added that conservation has to start from homes and at every level of the society. Special guest, wildlife warden Dimapur, Tokaho Kinimi said in comparison to other parts of the country, Nagaland has a high wildlife conservation rate. He said conservation efforts have been fruitful as there was more awareness among the public and that sale and consumption of wildlife has decreased drastically in Nagaland. Cautioning that poach-

ers and smugglers have started resorting to technology for wildlife trade, Kinimi said forest officials need to be more vigil in their approach towards dealing with wildlife crimes. Stating that most wildlife crimes happen within the community and not protected forests, he said it was essential to reach out to territorial areas where most of the wildlife crimes take place. He also highlighted the need for personal intervention and creating awareness at the grass root level. In a keynote address, DFO Dimapur Beizo Suokhrie said in the past

people hunted only for their needs but with changing times, killing of wildlife for commercial purposes has caused depletion of wildlife at a rapid pace. Therefore, Suokhrie said people need to change their attitude in order to preserve wildlife. ACF in-charge Dimapur Range Vivika Sema also highlighted on the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The programme was chaired by forest ranger, Imkongsunep Longchar, vote of thanks was delivered by ACF, ADMU Head, Dimapur division, Jongponglemba and attended by executive and ministerial staff of the division.

Shifting of DC office: DDCF reacts PCC organises webinar on to 15 Dimapur-based organisations management of personal finance

DIMAPUR: Dimapur District Citizens’ Forum (DDCF) Wednesday took exception to the assertion of 15-Dimapur based organisations “including some tribal organisations hailing from outside state of Nagaland” that DDCF was “self-styled and unmandated”. DDCF through its media cell sought to highlight the facts about the forum and the present movement against shifting of DC Dimapur office. DDCF said that it was on May 25, 2010 that 84 leaders representing more than 24 organisations assembled at Thahekhu Village and resolved to form an organisation accommodating all the tribal and non-tribal of Dimapur and coined the name Dimapur District Citizens’ Forum (DDCF). The forum said that among the signatories to the formation of DDCF were presidents and

leaders of Chakhesang Hoho Dimapur District (CHDD), Rengma Hoho Dimapur, Chakhro Angami Kuda Union (CAKU). Further, the forum said that the present movement against the shifting of DC Dimapur office was not just the interest of DDCF alone. On August 25, 2014, the forum said a meeting was called at Unity Hall, NCD Building of all the civil societies of Dimapur, where it was resolved to oppose the move to shift the DC Dimapur office from the present location under the banner of DDCF. Since then, the forum said the movement began with all the likeminded CSOs of Dimapur headed by the core committee comprising of different CSOs of Dimapur. DDCF has, therefore, said that it was people to judge whether DDCF has the people’s mandate or not.

DIMAPUR: Lotha Middle Range Public organization (LMRPO) at its 6th consultative meeting held at Sanis Town on September 30, 2021 unanimously passed a resolution to support the “Indo-Naga political issue for an early solution.” In a press release, LMRPO president Ntonsi Yanthan and general secretary Abemo Lapon appealed for unity “to find a common goal for the Naga political solution.” The organsiation stated that Naga people had “made their tryst with destiny” a long time ago and “lakhs of lives” have been sacrificed for the cause of the “Naga nation.” Appreciating the “supreme sacrifice” made by the Naga political group since the beginning of the movement, the LMRPO appealed to the groups to “forget and forgive the past mistakes” and come together as one…to give “concerted effort in giving a push to the Naga political issue in the interest of the Nagas.” Further, the organisaiton said that the choice before the Nagas was to talk to each other to a position that realistically constitutes “our Non-negotiable position for an inclusive, honourable and acceptable solution based on the unique history and situation of the Nagas.” LMRPO has also called upon the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to conclude the protracted Naga political issue at the earliest time.

appointment of Mishra

Lotha Public Organisation (LPO) is buoyant that Centre’s interlocutor AK Mishra will lead the Indo-Naga political issue towards a final settlement. Appreciating the Government of India (GoI), Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah for assigning the former Intelligence Bureau special director as the Centre’s representative in the Naga peace talks, LPO president Sulanthung Humtsoe and vice-president Phyobemo Odyuo in a press release hoped that Mishra would help iron out the difference among the negotiating parties. They said Naga people were happy that the Centre and NSCN (I-M) have resumed the peace talks to find an amicable solution to the protracted Naga political issue. Observing that Modi and Shah were committed to peace, they pointed out that both were determined on a solution so that there could be peace and development in Naga homeland. The LPO leaders said Mishra’s appointment as the Centre’s representative was a good sign towards resolving the Naga political issue as he was very well versed with Naga history, which they pointed out was another plus point for the Naga people. Mentioning that the stalemate between the negotiating parties had thawed, LPO hoped that the talks would be carried forward in the right direction, so that an agreement could be reached at the earliest for permanent peace in “our land”. According to LPO, Mishra has been given the important task of picking up the loose ends of Indo-Naga peace talks as he knew the Naga issue. The Naga people were now confident that the vexed Indo-Naga political issue would be resolved and the much-desired results of the peace talks would be achieved, they added.

said that investors should not be money accumulator but wealth creator. Sharma advised participants to look at real return and not on notional return as inflation and tax liability substantially takes away major portion of notional return. He cautioned participants that most of the investments except in governmental schemes have risk but risk can be managed by simple formula – think, understand and invest. He cautioned participants not to invest their hard-earned money on the advice of others including agents and never in unregulated fund mobilization schemes which give assurance for higher and quick return at the beginning but ultimately vanish with the hard earned money of investors. The webinar was concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by assistant professor, Dr. Ranjit Paul.

2 Bangladeshis deported from Assam

SILCHAR, OCT 6 (PTI): Two Bangladeshi nationals, including a woman, who had been staying in Assam illegally, were deported to their country, an official said on Wednesday. The two were kept at a detention camp in south Assam’s Silchar Central Jail since 2014, after they were declared foreigners by a court. Jail Superintendent Satyendra Baishya told PTI that BSF and Assam Police handed over the two foreigners to Border Guard Bangladesh at Sutarkandi border check post in Karimganj district on Tuesday, after the neighbouring country accepted their nationality. The two have been identified as Jahanara Begum, who hailed from Jessore district, and Habib Molla, a resident of Potuakhali district of Bangladesh. According to an official, 64 foreigners - 51 citizens of Myanmar, 10 Bangladeshis, two Nigerians and one Kenyan - are presently lodged in the detention camp in Silchar Central Jail.

Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. “There is no resentment against the state government and things are blown out of proportion,” Sonkar added. Speculation is rife that Das will join Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress after he praised her. In Kolkata, Das had said that political anarchy and chaos are prevailing in BJP-ruled Tripura where people are unhappy with the performance of the state government.

Refusing to disclose whether he would join the Trinamool Congress, the 43-year-old BJP MLA had said, “You will find out everything soon.” A party insider said that the central leadership is constantly monitoring the developments in Tripura. “The BJP leadership is aware about the happenings within the party in Tripura and will take necessary action accordingly as per the requirement. There are a few voices of dissent against the state government but the overall situation is under control,” party insiders said. On Monday, talking to the media in Kolkata, Das, an MLA from the Surma Assembly seat in northern Tripura, also criticised the Prime Minister for “selling most of the government properties to private parties”.

However, the UDP has decided not to field a candidate in Mawryngkneng assembly constituency and has extended support to NPP candidate Pyniaid Sing Syiem, who is Chairman of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC). “ We a r e f i g h t i n g to win the bye-election. We are hopeful to win in both the seats and we are equally hopeful that the NPP candidate with our support will also win the bye-election from Mawryngkneng constituency,” UDP president, Metbah Lyngdoh said. an SUV when they were agitating against the visit of deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya for a function in the union minister’s native place on October 3. Besides the four farmers, two BJP workers, the minister’s driver and a local journalist were also killed in the violence. On Tuesday, Tikait v i s i t e d t h e f a m i ly o f Gurvinder Singh, one of the four dead farmers, in Bahraich and backed their demand for a second post mortem which the government agreed to, and his last rites were performed this morning. The mortal remains of the other three farmers were cremated on Tuesday. “How can he (minister Mishra) remain a Union minister of Home Affairs when his own son is facing such a serious charge? ‘’The minister himself

has been named in the FIR for his alleged role. For an unbiased probe in the matter, the Centre must sack the minister,” BKU media in-charge Dharmendra Malik told PTI. The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), a major participant in the protests against the three central agri laws, also demanded the arrest of the minister’s son Ashish alias Monu Mishra. “His son should be arrested immediately. We have asked that both these demands be met within seven days, otherwise, the BKU will stage a massive demonstration in Uttar Pradesh to seek justice,” Malik added. A faction o f B K U wo r k e r s a n d supporters led by their national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait is currently staying put in Lakhimpur Kheri, which has now become the epicentre of the

turf war among political parties in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh. Mishra’s son Ashish is the only named accused in the FIR lodged at the Tikoniya police station in the district. Besides him, 15-20 other “unidentified persons” are mentioned as accused in the FIR. However, the minister has refuted the allegations of his son’s involvement in the episode that took place near his native Banbirpur village. Meanwhile, Mishra on Wednesday attended the office in Delhi and met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the first time since a murder case was registered against his son on Sunday. Mishra is understood to have briefed Shah about the Sunday incident in his home district of Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh.

Kashmiri Pandits hold anti- C’garh communal violence: 66 arrested, curfew remains Pakistan protests in Jammu government has failed to protect them. Bindroo, a Kashmiri Pandit, was gunned down by terrorists at his pharmacy in Srinagar on Tuesday. Bindroo was one of the few in his community who did not migrate out of Kashmir at the onset of militancy in 1990. He stayed back along with his wife to continue operating his business, which was a trusted name for quality medicines. Barely a few minutes after the killing of Bindroo, militants gunned down a roadside vendor identified as Virendra Paswan, a resident of Bhagalpur in Bihar, near Hawal Chowk in Srinagar. Militants also shot dead Mohammad Shafi Lone at Naidkhai in Bandipora district of north Kashmir. Activists of the Shiv Sena and the Dogra Front took out rallies in Jammu in protest against the killings. They raised antiPakistan slogans and burnt a flag of Pakistan. “The government must deal with terrorists, their supporters within Kashmir with an iron hand before dealing with Pakistan. Justice should be delivered,” Shiv Sena leader Ashok Gupta said.

the security point of view, he added. The trouble started on October 3 after people from two communities clashed over the removal of religious flags from Lohara Chowk. To protest the incident, right-wing outfits took out a rally on Tuesday. “So far 66 people have been arrested in connection with Tuesday’s violence while 15 were apprehended following Sunday’s incident. More than half a dozen FIRs have been registered,” said Kabirdham Superintendent of Police Mohit Garg.

“For some time now, the far mers are being attacked by the government. Farmers are being mowed down by a jeep, they are being murdered, the name of a BJP home minister and his son is coming up, but no action is being taken,” Gandhi said. “The farmers of the countr y are being systematically attacked. The first attack was to reverse the land acquisition bill, the second was bringing the three farm bills and today systematically what rightfully belongs to farmers is being snatched away,” the former Congress chief alleged. Asked about the detention of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and the treatment meted out to her, he said it is not about her but this is an issue about farmers. “Be it Priyanka or me or anybody of our family, manhandling does not bother us... You can manhandle us, detain us, hit us or bury us, it does not bother us. This is part of our training of years given by our family. It will not bother us,” he claimed.

NEW DELHI, OCT 6 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday alleged that “dictatorship” and not democracy prevails in the country with farmers being “systematically attacked” and politicians not allowed to visit Uttar Pradesh to meet families hit by the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri. Addressing a press conference, Gandhi said he along with two Congress Chief Ministers -- Bhupesh Baghel (Chhattisgarh) and Charanjit Singh Channi (Punjab) -- will visit Lakhimpur Kheri to meet the families hit by the violence. After initially denying permission to Rahul Gandhi to visit Lakhimpur Kheri, the Uttar Pradesh g o ve r n m e n t h a s n o w allowed him and Priyanka Gandhi and three others to visit the district. He took a commercial flight to Lucknow along with the two chief ministers. Gandhi charged, “There used to be democracy here, but there is a dictatorship in India now. Politicians cannot go to Uttar Pradesh. We are being told since yesterday that we cannot go to Uttar Pradesh”’. Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gandhi said that on Tuesday the PM was in Lucknow but he could not go to Lakhimpur Kheri, where eight people have died in violence.

O

Realm of solution

ne of the most commonly heard word is ‘solution’ with regard to the Naga political issue. The Naga political issue has defied agreement for decades despite creation of Nagaland state in 1963 since the NNC rejected anything short of total independence. Thus it became an intractable problem defying solution. Thus, finding a solution to the problem became problem in the face of rigid stands. The first cease fire that came into effect on September 6,1964 provided the first ever opportunity for peaceful resolution but almost nine rounds of negotiations between prime minister Indira Gandhi and the FGN delegation led by ato kilonser Kughato Sukhai eventually hit a roadblock over the issue of sovereignty. The rigid stands of both sides prevented a meeting ground where both could have ensured a win-win situation. The government of India under prime minister Indira Gandhi, could have offered anything short of independence had the very word been modified in so many other words. Anyway after the negotiations were called off, it was back to square one. The second cease fire came after 33 years when the NSCN (I-M) agreed to a cease fire in 1997. The third cease fire was signed in 2001 with the NSCN (K) and after the group abrogated the cease fire in 2015, the other faction which today is known as GPRN/NSCN, the fourth with NSCN (R), fifth with NSCN (Khango) and sixth with NSCN (Niki). After the much heralded announcement by former Interlocutor that since all official negotiations had concluded on October 31,2019 the final agreement was only a matter of time. However, there were developments subsequently and today, with a new Interlocutor and all negotiating parties reconnected, there is expectation of a solution soon. When, is the question in the minds of Nagas across the north east and even Myanmar. It may also be recalled that all state governments in the north east- Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradeshare opposed to any peace deal that would affect their boundaries in case it involves enlargement Nagaland beyond its present political boundaries. In Manipur, where the Nagas have a sizeable population and whose lands make up 70% of the state; the Meiteis (Manipuris) have already made it clear that the final Naga accord should not hurt Manipur’s interests but appear more concerned about the state’s territorial integrity. It would be right if the concern was to give what is due and promote peace and harmony with the meiteis and various CSOs. There has to be consideration for even Arunachal Nagas-- Nocte, Tangsa, Tutsa and Wancho- who dominate three districts- Tirap, Changlang and Longding. Nagaland is the birthplace of Naga nationalism which were inspired by many firebrand leaders from erstwhile Naga Hills District and Naga Hills Tuensang Area. Solution is a broader objective since it goes beyond political agreement. It is an inward selfless commitment towards rebuilding, towards reconciliation between the victims and the perpetrators, towards rejecting all kinds of acts inimical to society, towards promoting accountability in all spheres- social, political and religious fields and also ensuring justice for the weaker sections who do not have the backing or patronage of powerful sections of society. This is the fervent prayers of those who see beyond rhetoric and politics. It is by those who want to ensure that solution bring lasting peace.

DailyDevotion The Nature of Regeneration

When it pleased God…to reveal His Son in me… —Galatians 1:15-16 If Jesus Christ is going to regenerate me, what is the problem He faces? It is simply this— I have a heredity in which I had no say or decision; I am not holy, nor am I likely to be; and if all Jesus Christ can do is tell me that I must be holy, His teaching only causes me to despair. But if Jesus Christ is truly a regenerator, someone who can put His own heredity of holiness into me, then I can begin to see what He means when He says that I have to be holy. Redemption means that Jesus Christ can put into anyone the hereditary nature that was in Himself, and all the standards He gives us are based on that nature— His teaching is meant to be applied to the life which He puts within us. The proper action on my part is simply to agree with God’s verdict on sin as judged on the Cross of Christ. The New Testament teaching about regeneration is that when a person is hit by his own sense of need, God will put the Holy Spirit into his spirit, and his personal spirit will be energized by the Spirit of the Son of God— “…until Christ is formed in you” (Galatians 4:19). The moral miracle of redemption is that God can put a new nature into me through which I can live a totally new life. When I finally reach the edge of my need and know my own limitations, then Jesus says, “Blessed are you…” (Matthew 5:11). But I must get to that point. God cannot put into me, the responsible moral person that I am, the nature that was in Jesus Christ unless I am aware of my need for it. Just as the nature of sin entered into the human race through one man, the Holy Spirit entered into the human race through another Man (see Romans 5:12-19). And redemption means that I can be delivered from the heredity of sin, and that through Jesus Christ I can receive a pure and spotless heredity, namely, the Holy Spirit.

A Theological reflection on Covid-19

ovid-19 is real and it has just altered our ways of living! But can you imagine there are still people who think that covid-19 and vaccine are just scam! Yes, for a long time, approximately 100 years, the world did not experience the likes of Covid-19 pandemic. However, pandemics are not foreign to humanity. In 430 BCE there was a pandemic, which spread through Libya, Ethiopia, and Egypt and then to Europe. It is said that this pandemic wiped out 70% of the population of Athens (Greece). The incomprehensible thought for us might be that this pandemic was suspected to be typhoid. In the same manner when illnesses such as small box (180 CE) and Cholera (1817 CE) broke out they were pandemics that took many lives. In 1350 CE the Black Death pandemic happened. It spread from Asia to Sicily and from there to other parts of the world. It accounted one-third of the world’s population. Then in 1918 CE the Spanish flu hit the globe. It was an avian borne flu that took 50 million lives worldwide. We still suffer from the pandemic of HIV/ AIDS which has killed 35 million population over time and yet for the past almost 4 decades scientists have not been able to find its vaccine. Today Covid-19 has killed 4.5+ million people in the world. In India it has taken 4 lakhs+ people and in Nagaland 631 (and counting) deaths. This is just the official number but there could be more people dying of Covid-19. Theological reflection This pandemic has aroused speculations among many Christians around the world that the, “end time” has arrived. Many have

R

also voiced out saying that, “this pandemic is caused by human sin,” and still many have asked the theodicy questions, “why is this happening? Where is God? Is God really an omnipotent God?” End Time? Many Christians in the world and most Naga Christians are knowingly or unknowingly proponents of pre-millennialism. Pre-millennialists think that this world during the “end time” will go from bad to worst until Jesus Christ rapture and takes them to heaven. Furthermore, they think that this world will become hell where the bad ones will be burned alive. However, the scripture appears to be painting a different picture. This world is God’s creation, which he said it is beautiful. However, because of the fall of human beings God entered into a project of redeeming both the humanity and his creation (the universe) first through Abraham, and his descendants Israel, and later through Jesus Christ. Jesus, in his death and resurrection, has granted us all the authority in heavens and on earth so that we can go out to the ends of the world spreading the good news and redeeming the world (Romans 8: 21-24). Then one day as recorded in Revelation 21 God will reunite both the heavens (God’s space) and the earth; and he will be our God and we will be his people and together we shall live as it were in the Garden of Eden. So this world does not seem to go from bad to worse. There are some passages that appear to go against such theological construction, particularly the understanding of rapture (1 Thessalonians 4). However, it has to be noted that when Paul

talks about rapture – humans ascending to sky to join Jesus – he is utilizing Hebrew and Roman imageries. Akin to the Hebrew imagery of Moses bringing down the Ten Commandments from mount Sinai, Jesus Christ is depicted as coming down to establish his kingdom here on earth. Similarly, the Roman imagery like that of a Roman general coming back from the battle victoriously. It is said that when a Roman general returns triumphantly from war or battle the citizens would come out from the city gates carrying trumpets, drums etc and they go to meet the general on the way and usher him into the city with great festivities. So Jesus is the general and the people going up (being raptured) are not to go somewhere up in the air but to usher in Jesus here on this earth whereby he will rule us forever. Again some would argue that Jesus himself said, before his ascension, that he would go to make many dwelling place for us (John 14:2). But if we look at the Greek word mone – the word for dwelling place – it means a temporary resting place or a way station. So when people die they go and live with Jesus, until the resurrection when they will resurrect and rule along with Christ on this earth. Now Jesus himself said that he does not know the time of his coming (Matthew 24:36). So how are we to know that this is the end time? Some pick the passage of how the moon will turn red and the stars will fall (Mark 13). But again Jesus here is not talking about the end time rather about the destruction of the temple, which happened in 70 AD. For the Israelites, temple is everything and its

Careers: Recruiters code and the top job assured

ecruitment Strategy turns talent Centric. Companies are constantly on the search for talented individuals who can contribute significantly to the organization. Which involves employing people who can handle majority of tasks in a systematic and efficient way. There is a massive difference between higher education in India and its relevance for job employment. Recruiters have a certain mind-set to select potential employees who suit their working culture and are the best fit for them. Each company has its own strategy to find its custom fit for all its profiles. Companies adopt various assessments methods to evaluate candidates; skills by multiple selection stages depending on the level of hiring. Organizations mostly look for best-fit candidates, having a balanced positive attitude and pleasant personality traits. Some of the important skill sets which the company look at are: ability to think and articulate the thoughts clearly; ability to collaborate and work with cross functional teams, ability to embrace change and remain agile, excellent numeric skills, persistence and perseverance. Recruiter in company, V. N. Mohan advised; “Be job ready, have clarity in choosing the right role, do a thorough check on the website of the company, check for the competitors of the company, improve soft skills, learn basic concepts and have a right attitude at the time of interview.” Recr uiters reaching out to the right audience: Recruiters now follow a skill-based hiring process, where they look for and hire professionals who are well-

versed in technologies like social media, cloud, analytics, mobility and big data or domain-specific skills. This process also leverages technology and social media as primary platforms to reach out to the potential candidates. Global company focus on recruiting employees who can be a perfect fit for the company and the roles they are hired for, irrespective of locations. The career opportunities are limitless in some of the companies, there is no rule to educational qualification. What they need is domain experts, who understand the company’s requirements. So the recruiters advice to go beyond the syllabus, learn new technologies , master social media, or improve your skills through credits or online courses. It will help you to employ by the company. Recruiters essentially look for in potential hires is a mix of strong problem -solving abilities, client serving-mindset, and core skills. Company Recruitment policy is putting right person in the right place: Obviously they look for people who have the required job-skills but more importantly assess the candidate for softer aspect and cultural fit. Aspects like; communication skills, customer focus, result oriented, ambition, collaboration, teachable. Above all integrity is a value the company do not compromised. Therefore, background verification is a must for the recruiters. Demands for job in manufacturing: Skilled employees, advance technology and high-tech tools mark the present-day manufacturing units. Engineer and managers are the movers of this sec-

destruction is equivalent to a cataclysmic event. While discussing about end time one should think about remaining faithful and hopeful for the Lord. Our faith should be such that, should the Lord come the next second we should be ready to spend time with him. Should he come after another 2000 years we should still be ready to remain faithful to God’s calling. Human Sin? Another theological query that has often emerged during this pandemic is: is this crisis because of our sins? Note that the scripture has two strands: Firstly, the strand of theology derived from the book of Deuteronomy (Deuteronomistic theology) that says blessings for obedience and punishment for disobedience. This strand of theology is prominent in the Pentateuch, the prophetic literature and the historical writings. The Old Testament prophets were regulating under this theology and so prophets like Amos, Jeremiah etc were talking about punishment for Israel because of their disobedience. However, there is another strand of theology namely the one we find in the book of Job and other parts of Psalms (example Psalms 44, 88, and 89). Here suffering exists not because of some one’s sin but as a natural cause. This understanding that suffering is not necessarily because of sin becomes prominent in the ministry of Jesus Christ when he tells that the man’s illness is not because of his parents’ sin or anybody’s sin (John 9:1-2). Thus, we need to be circumspect when we tend to make a blanket statement that this pandemic is because of our sin. Of course, humans are sinners

tors, but what is sough from them has changed. Students today need industry-aligned programmes which employ special teaching methodologies that include online learning, practical training, industry tours, internships, research projects and live projects, to stay relevant as per future required. Manufacturing sector covers a range of industries, including, electronics, aerospace, automotive, steel, textile, leather and footwear and many more. The manufacturing conglomerates searched their talent as per the level of qualification and expertise. Industry hire people who would like to get their hands dirty and have the courage to challenge the status quo and provide out of the box solution. Most of the companies now hire candidates for their right attitude, keenness to learn, and relearn becomes a key quality. Openness to ideas, ability to understand and solve the problems of the clients, being a team player, adaptability to technology and analytical skills are some of the basic ingredients that most of the companies look for in a candidate while hiring. Recruiters now weighin on all major and minor aspects of your resume. Slow down and introspect, figure out what you are lacking, your end goal and the skills you need to achieve. From soft skills to technical ones. Give the highly competitive nature of the job market, job seekers should upskill themselves on a constant basis, and reskill themselves according to the market demand for emerging skill-sets. Dr. Meyingangla, Counselling department, Immanuel College

T

and we need to repent our sins everyday. However, we also should realize that our sins are forgiven in God’s graciousness. It is just that at times the natural law in the world expresses itself in different forms and shapes of crisis. This leads us to the third point. Where is God? If God is so powerful and in control of this world, where is God? Why this suffering? The word powerful or omnipotence needs to be redefined in the light of the ministry of Jesus – the God incarnated. For humans, omnipotence is defined from our worldly experience such as being wealthy, having social status, being very healthy, capable of doing the unthinkable things. We then project such an understanding of the meaning of omnipotence on to God and think that God should be a fictional “Spiderman,” or a “Superman.” However, when we look at the person and work of Jesus, he came talking about humility, loving not just friends but enemies, being compassionate, restoring people and community through healing and finally sacrificing his own life for the underserving people. It is here that the omnipotence of God needs to be understood. For instance, God is all-powerful and therefore he sacrificed his life on the cross and defeated death so that we might have life and authority to defeat Satan’s schemes. Can any human defeat death? Here lies the power of God. God’s omnipotence comes through the process of humility and sacrifice and not in a fictional manner. Now where is God during this heart wrenching pandemic? One way of answering this question is to look at the story of Lazarus. What did Jesus do

to Lazarus? Jesus brought Lazarus back to life from death. However, again, what did Jesus do before he rose Lazarus to life? Jesus wept (John 11:35). Where is God? God is with us weeping in the midst of this pandemic. The question “where is God?” is not what the Bible wants us to ask but the question “what should we do?” is what the Scripture wants us to ponder. Jesus has empowered us in the Holy Spirit and therefore we should be asking what are we doing during this time. The early Christians when heard about a famine that was coming (Acts 11) they did not ponder on the question “why?” But rather on “what should we do?” And consequently, they acted out. The imperative calling for us during this pandemic is to be responsible and accountable individuals by following the standard operating procedures (SOPs) strictly, getting the vaccine and prayerfully rendering services to the sick and needy of our communities. It is recorded in the medieval church history that during times like this it was Christians who stayed back and helped the sick when many rich citizens and many non-Christians ran away up to the hills far from the pandemic. However, it was because of such selfless acts of the Christians that Christianity not just survived many persecutions and hardships but also grew exponentially. Likewise, today we are in such a predicament where greater workers are demanded for the harvest. Are we one of the workers? M. Sashi Jamir, Oriental Theological Seminary, Bade, Dimapur

What is Philosophy? Why not Philosophy in Nagaland?

he term Philosophy means “love of wisdom”. In a broader sense, It is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline; it is closely related to values, reason, mind, language, mathematics, religion and politics, etcand such questions are often posed as problems to be studied or resolved. Philosophical method includes questioning, critical discussion, rational argument and systematic presentation. Why Philosophy is important because the study of philosophy enhances a person’s problem solving capacities. It helps to analyse concepts, definitions, arguments and problems. Not only that, it also helps to synthesize a variety of view or perspectives into one unified whole and contributes uniquely to the development of expressive and communicative power. It provides training in the construction of clear formulations, writing skills, good arguments and appropriate examples. Philosophy can also make one a good critic. Philosophy connects to all the other subjects where its fundamental questions apply to all disciplines and addresses the full range of human experiences. Philosophy is relevant to society through normative way as it brings some organized thinking about values, ethical theory and the haywire facts of human social arrangements into proper and rational discussion.Philosophy also is a process that benefits the whole of society in helping to build bridges between peopleand culture and heightens the demand for quality education for all. While Society is very different today, we lean very heavily to science as its Core, though philosophy is still striving towards figuring out what is truth and worthwhile, the advancement of science and technologies cannot literally teach beings how to act morally nor how to valuehuman happiness over human misery. We cannot create an experiment that test the nature of truth or the obtainability of knowledge through technologies. Science helps us live longer, whereas Philosophy helps us live better. Why not philosophy as a major subject in Nagaland Institutions? In conditions to change and trends, why not Philosophy in Nagaland? It is very much important to have the capacity to generate our society, politics,

educational institutions and generation through sustainability in an ethical way. We need philosophy in order to have a thorough discussion of what is morality. We must ensure that our children learn to think and question from an early age. We should shape their future with high education qualities and morals. Most people deny or doubt the importance of Philosophy and do not truly and fully understand what Philosophy is all about, but they practice it on a day-to-day basis in their lives unknowingly. Currently, Nagaland does not give much interest to this subject : Philosophy , as a required subject to studentsthough many private and governmental educational institutions are highly developed , these institutions still lack theteaching or introductionof Philosophy as a required subject for students. Philosophy can and should be taught in educational institutions because this is the ideal time for students to engage themselves in questioning, debatable arguments, and rigorous methods of thinking which will also help in developing their mental ability to withstand any problems which quick solutions and rational thinking. While comparing to other states, most mentors and teachers encourage the importance of Philosophy to their students but in Nagaland, we notice students having no idea one what Philosophy even is and that is why, this subject need to be introduced or given importance as much as we give importance to other subjects. Educational Institutions, be it governmental or private, should introduce Philosophy as an optional subject or a major course. In a fast developing and trending society, the mental ability to think rationally is needed instead of depending in the Old Orthodox methods.Althoughwe are living in the 21stcentury where the entire Human raceisintellectually intellectual, not all humans are active with their intellectuals because they tend to focus more on their personal needs. We see young people or parents emphasizing more on science, technology, engineering etc. but despite all these , we still need Philosophy for the betterment of our society to live together sustainably in an ethical way as stated above, ‘Science helps us live longer but Philosophy helps us live better.’ Peteneizo Talie, Rüsoma Village

Raid on cruise ship ‘fake’: Nawab Malik

MUMBAI, OCT 6 (PTI/ IANS): The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) alleged on Wednesday that the NCB’s raid on a cruise ship off the Mumbai coast on October 2 was “fake”, and no narcotic drugs were found during it. The party also questioned the presence of two persons along with the NCB team during the raid, and alleged that one of them was a BJP member. The BJP’s reaction was not available immediately. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has so far arrested 17 people, including Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan, after allegedly seizing drugs from the Goa-bound ship on Saturday. “The drama (the raid) was fake. NCB admits 2 outsiders were ‘independent witnesses’, rejects NCP claims

BJP member Manish Bhanushali circled in photographs shown by NCP minister Nawab Malik.

escorting Aryan Khan in one of the videos was not an NCB official, and his social media profile states that he is a private detective based in Kuala Lumpur, the NCP leader alleged. Further, two men are seen escorting Arbaaz Merchant, also arrested in the case, in another video, and one of them is a member of the BJP, Malik alleged. “If these two men are not officials of the NCB, then why were they escorting two high-profile people (Khan and Merchant),” he

asked. The man seen with Merchant was in Gujarat on September 21-22 and could be connected to the seizure of about 3,000 kilograms of heroin at Mundra Port, Malik claimed, asking the BJP to come clear on this person’s credentials. “The entire NCB is being used by the BJP to malign people, the Maharashtra government and Bollywood,” Malik said, alleging that the anti-drug agency was targeting those who are against the saffron party.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) said on Wednesday that two persons -- Manish Bhanushali and Kiran Gosavi -- were among more than half-a-dozen of its ‘independent witnesses’ during the October 2 rave party raid on the luxury ship Cordelia Cruise. However, the NCB scoffed the claims of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) spokesperson and Maharashtra Minister Nawab Malik as “baseless, with malice to malign the agency’s image and in retaliation against an earlier actoin of the NCB”. On Wednesday afternoon, Malik had made the sensational claim that a BJP ‘vice-president’, Manish Bhanushali, and another ‘private detective’, Kiran Gosavi, were involved in the NCB operation on Sunday. Terming the NCB raid as ‘fraudulent’, he had also raised questions over the NCB’s seizures, not following due processes of law, and allegedly involving ‘outsider private persons’ in its operations. The NCB has asserted that it functions in a professional and legally transparent manner, and carries out its duties without any bias, and that even the ‘panchnamas’ were done as per the law. Meanwhile, Bhanushali spoke to a private Marathi TV channel and said that he had given the tip-off about the rave party to the NCB and was accompanying them as a ‘witness’ to affix his signature on the relevant case papers. Defending the NCB, BJP’s Leaders of Opposition (Assembly) Devendra Fadnavis and Pravin Darekar (Council) dismissed Malik’s charges as arising out of ‘frustration’ for the agency’s action of nabbing his son-inlaw in January 2021 in a drugs case.

Maintain precautions as Covid not over yet, warns AIIMS chief NEW DELHI, OCT 6 (IANS/PTI): The Covid pandemic is not over yet and hence, people should not lower their guard, AIIMS Director, Dr Randeep Guleria, said on Wednesday. Appearing in an information video series by the Health Ministry titled ‘Covid Gurukool’, he said that the second Covid surge still continues, with the country reporting many thousands of cases per day. “If we look at global scenario, increasing cases are being reported in many parts of the world,” he said, noting that the pandemic will eventually turn endemic in due course of time, like many previous pandemics have. “The Covid pandemic will turn into mere illness and will become part of our day to day life. Majority of people with immunity will have normal symptoms like cold, cough, fever, and flulike symptoms. But elderly

DU instructs on inclusion of state HC directs NIA to file affidavit board subjects in cut-off calculation on Waze’s house custody plea NEW DELHI, OCT 6 (PTI): With Delhi University colleges witnessing a large number of admissions of students from the Kerala state board, the university has issued guidelines on inclusion of subjects from other state boards equivalent to ones taught under the Central Board of Secondary Education in the calculation of cut-off marks. There is an equivalence committee which decides which subjects from state boards would be similar to CBSE subjects and their inclusion while calculating the cut-off score -- the average of best-of-four marks. “If they (committee) say that a subject is not equivalent, it cannot be included in Best of Four,” said Rajeev Gupta, Chairman, Admissions at the university. A meeting was held on Tuesday with colleges and a list was shared with them. Citing an example, Gupta said that CBSE has started Applied Mathematics as a subject to help students who are not well-

versed with Mathematics, which means it is easier than Mathematics. “CBSE has also written that students of Applied Mathematics will not be eligible for Physics (Honours), Chemistry (Honours) and Mathematics (Honours). The Equivalence Committee considered it and found that Applied Mathematics cannot be considered for Economics (Honours) since the course requires a difficult level of Mathematics but it can be considered for B.Com(Honours),” he said. The committee considers factors like theory and practical components, syllabus, etc. while deciding on the equivalence, Gupta said. For instance, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has a subject titled Mathematics and Statistics, which according to the guidelines will be considered equivalent to CBSE Mathematics, while Nagaland Board of School Education’s Fundamentals of Business Mathematics

will also be considered as the equivalent of Mathematics in CBSE. Similarly, the guidelines state that the subject titled Accountancy with Computer Accounting taught by the Kerala Board of Higher Secondary Education will not be considered equivalent to Business Studies of CBSE. The Business Economics paper of Madhya Pradesh will not be considered equivalent to CBSE Economics. In a related development, the Students’’ Federation of India demanded that CBSE and its evaluation should not be the deciding factor in admissions. “It has also been identified that CBSE and their methods are being the deciding factor regarding concerns of other state boards. These tendencies have to stop and the university must be comprehensive,” the Left student outfit said in a statement. It also alleged discrimination against a “particular state board”.

MUMBAI, OCT 6 (PTI): The Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to file an affidavit in response to a plea filed by dismissed Mumbai police officer Sachin Waze, arrested in the Antilia bomb scare and businessman Mansukh Hiran murder case, seeking to be placed under house custody. Waze was arrested by the NIA in March this year and was later sent to judicial custody. Last month, Waze was permitted by a sessions court to be admitted to a private hospital where he underwent bypass surgery. Waze later sought permission from the special NIA court to be placed under house arrest so that he could recuperate. Waze had stated that he was vulnerable to infection if he is asked to stay in jail. The special NIA court had last month rejected Waze’s request following which he approached the high court earlier this week.

On Wednesday, Waze’s plea came up before a division bench of Justices Nitin Jamdar and Sarang Kotwal. Wa z e ’s a dvo c a t e s Sudeep Pasbola and Rounak Naik told the court that Waze has been discharged from the private hospital and shifted to the Taloja prison in Navi Mumbai. They added that the prison hospital was in poor condition and not wellequipped. The bench then directed the NIA to file an affidavit in a week. Waze in his petition said he stands a high risk of contracting infections as his surgery was recently performed and his health would be further jeopardized if he is asked to stay in jail. The plea added that if house arrest permission is granted, Waze would be put in a separate room in his residence where complete seclusion would be maintained.

Only 7% adults now hesitant: Survey

people with low immunity may get severe illness in the form of pneumonia requiring hospital admission,” he said. However, Dr Guleria warned that, at the current time, it is premature to say the pandemic has become endemic and we still need to be extremely cautious as we don’t know how will the virus behave in coming times. “The virus may mutate and become more infectious, so we need to be very much cautious,” he said. M e a n w h i l e, I n d i a on Wednesday reported 18,333 fresh Covid cases and 278 deaths.

Only 7 per cent Indian adults are currently hesitant to getting inoculated against COVID-19, the lowest vaccine hesitancy level in the country so far, according to a new survey. The study conducted by the online community platform LocalCircles received 12,810 responses from citizens -- 67 per cent men and 33 per cent women -- across 301 districts. It sought to understand from unvaccinated citizens their reasons for not taking the jab and their plan on getting inoculated. As much as 42 per cent respondents were from tier 1, 27 per cent from tier-2 and 31 per cent from tier 3, 4 and rural districts. India has an adult population of 94 crore, and approximately 68 crore have already taken at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

(From p-1) It said that projects under ‘Unknown’ category were “extremely difficult” to verify since it pertained to farming and allied activities. Further, RPP said that even if there has been implementation of projects, it can be “safely assumed” that the private farms of VIPs have been developed instead. “This is illegal because the whole purpose of Tribal Ministry funding is to benefit tribals and poor farmers in the states,” RPP said. In the light of the above, RPP said that the state government has been guilty of misappropriating money meant for the farmers. “In short, tribal ministry funding equals pocket money of ministers and VIPs,” the party stated.

Ramakumar said. IOC also plans to convert 10 per cent of its hydrogen consumption to green hydrogen and its Mathura refinery will become green by 2024. Ramakumar said the green hydrogen can be converted to ethanol. The IOC also has plans to set up a pilot plant to make biofuel with ethanol to power aircraft. Ramakumar said the Central government may mandate refining and fertiliser industries to use green hydrogen, i.e., hydrogen made from non-fossil sources. Queried about IOC’s plans to run hydrogen fuel cell buses in Kerala, he said the company has asked the state government to provide land to locate its unit at the Kochi airport and Thiruvananthapuram.

1,000. According to Ramakumar, the proposed centre will do research on areas like alternative and renewable energy, nanotechnology etc. Spending about Rs 500 crore annually on R&D, IOC has monetised its research outcome. One such technology is INDMAX, a novel technology which produces high yield of light olefins and high octane gasoline from various petroleum fractions. The technology has been licensed to a Russian oil company. Ramakumar said that discussions with six more refineries in the Asia Pacific region are on for licensing of the technology. The R&D investments over the last one decade has resulted in a notional income of Rs 5,000 crore (savings in expenditure and others) for IOC, he said. With regard to asset monetisation plans of IOC, he said the company may hive off some of its hydrogen plants. During the run-up to BS VI fuel production, IOC had set up hydrogen plants and there is surplus now. To start with, the hydrogen plant at its refinery in Gujarat may be monetised,

said that prior to the report, LIFE had also come up with solid waste management earlier. He mentioned that DMC has been working closely with the NGO and was confident that work would go a long way in creating awareness and sensitising the people on safe disposal of face masks. Pointing out that waste was an integral part of modern-day life, he observed that many people did not realise how they generated wastes and how to dispose them off. He called for community participation in waste management. On safe disposal of facemasks, Ezung said a proposal had been sent to the State government. He mentioned that the government has also asked DMC to identify a suitable place to set up a plant for biomedical waste management, for which the council was working closely with the health & family welfare department.

However, he pointed out that on August 3, 2021 chief minister Neiphiu Rio had made a statement in the Assembly that the government did not reject the NSCN (I-M)’s demand for a separate flag, constitution and integration of Naga-inhabited contiguous areas and that the group would be persuaded, post agreement, thus rendering meaningless the earlier developments. In view of the statement, Therie said the 60 legislators resolved demanding resumption of peace talks. Since the last paragraph of FA assured to work out details of execution plan to implement shortly, he pointed out that passage of six years couldn’t be termed as short. But since talks were over and the chief minister and the political parties had promised repeatedly to pave the way if an acceptable and honourable solution was found and as the stakeholders had accepted the Agreed Position between Government of India and seven NNPGs in principle, he demanded finalisation of details and implement the solution.

It is very important to bring the land and property records of villages out from uncertainty and mistrust and the SVAMITVA Yojana is going to become a huge strength of the residents of villages, he said. He also said the SVAMITVA Yojana will save villagers from borrowing money from third parties and now, on the basis of their property papers, they will get loans from banks to enhance their financial strength to run businesses, improve farming facilities and keep them away from private lenders.

Addressing virtually a function in Harda district of Madhya Pradesh where a survey for the scheme was completed in 10 months, Modi said after the successful implementation of the SVAMITVA Yojana on a pilot basis in some states, it will be implemented and extended at the national level for ensuring the development of rural areas. “It will become an example of Gram Swaraj in the country,” he said. WHO says number of new cases fell last week GENEVA, OCT 6 (AP): The World Health Organization says the number of newly reported coronavirus cases fell in the last week, continuing a declining global trend that first began in August. In its latest assessment of the pandemic, the UN health agency reported Tuesday that there were 3.1 million new COVID-19 cases, a 9% fall, and about 54,000 deaths in the last week, roughly similar to the week before. WHO said there were declines in case numbers in all world regions except for Europe, where the number was about the same as the previous week. COVID-19 cases fell by about 43 per cent in Africa, by about 20 per cent in both the Middle East and Southeast Asia and 12 per cent in the Americas and the Western Pacific. The largest decline in deaths was seen in Africa, where numbers decreased by about a quarter. WHO also said nearly a third of African countries managed to vaccinate at least 10 per cent of their populations by the end of September. The WHO chief has repeatedly urged rich countries to pass on giving booster doses until at least the end of the year.

Boris Johnson

Tory party delegates. “I know that there has been a certain raucous squaukus from the anti-AUKUS caucus, but AUKUS is simply a recognition of the reality that the world is tilting on its economic axis and our trade and relations with the Indo-Pacific region are becoming ever more vital than ever before,” he said. The alliance — widely seen as an effort to counter China’s influence in the contested South China Sea — was announced by US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Johnson and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison last month. “That is why we have sent the amazing Carrier

Strike Group to the Far East, which has been performing manoeuvres with 40 friendly countries with HMS Queen Elizabeth, as long as the entire palace of Westminster and rather more compelling as an argument than many speeches made in the House of Commons,” Johnson noted. The UK’s Carrier Strike Group has performed joint maritime exercises with the Indian Navy and will return for another operation later this month. Jo h n s o n’s s p e e c h , which marks the conclusion of the four-day party conference, set out his vision for the Conservative government in the coming year and he used it to highlight the successes of the party to its wider membership. He pointed to the country’s COVID-19 vaccination programme, which he said had been delivered at “incredible speed” and enabled the reopening of the economy faster than many other countries. “How have we managed to open up ahead of so many of our friends? You know the answer, it is because of the roll-out

of that vaccine – a UK phenomenon, the magic potion invented in Oxford University, bottled in Wales and distributed at incredible speed to vaccination centres everywhere,” he said. “No other government brokered a deal such as this government did with AstraZeneca so that the Oxford vaccine has been distributed at a cost around the world more than a billion low-cost vaccines invented in Britain, saving millions of lives,” he asserted. Covishield, the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, is the result of the deal he had referenced. The thrust of Johnson’s address was on this postpandemic reopening, urging people to get “back in the office” and also pledging further support for his party’s “levelling up” agenda for all parts of the United Kingdom. “We are announcing a levelling up premium of up to GBP 3,000 to send the best maths and science teachers to the places that need them the most,” he announced.

FB whistleblower cites spying by China NEW YORK/ LONDON, OCT 6 (IANS/PTI): During much-anticipated testimony before the US Senate Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen repeatedly pointed outside of the country for examples of how the social network could be used to dangerous ends, CNN reported. The former product manager on Tuesday referenced a series of links between activity on Facebook and deadly violence in Myanmar and Ethiopia, and spying by China and Iran. Asked by one senator whether Facebook is used by “authoritarian or terroristbased leaders” around the world, Haugen responded that such use of the platform is “definitely” happening, and that Facebook is “very aware” of it, the report said. Her last role at Facebook was with the company’s counterespionage team, which she says “directly worked on tracking Chinese participation on the platform” surveilling, say, Uyghur populations around the world.” “You could actually find the Chinese, based on them doing these kinds of things,” she said. In March, Facebook’s security staff revealed that Chinese hackers had tar-

geted Uyghur activists and journalists living outside the country with fake Facebook accounts and malware, the report said. Haugen’s team also observed “the active participation of, say, the Iran government doing espionage on other state actors. This is definitely a thing that is happening,” she said. This summer, Mike Dvilyanski, Facebook’s head of cyber espionage investigations, told CNN the company had disabled “fewer than 200 operational accounts” on its platform associated with the Iranian spying campaign, and notified a similar number of Facebook users they may have been targeted by the group, the report added. Haugen blamed “a consistent understaffing of (Facebook’s) counterespionage information operation and terrorism team” for the ongoing proliferation of such threats however, and

The global outage that knocked Facebook and its other platforms offline for hours was caused by an error during routine maintenance, the company said. Santosh Janardhan, Facebook’s vice president of infrastructure, said in a blog post that Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp going dark was “caused not by malicious activity, but an error of our own making.” The problem occurred as engineers were carrying out day to day work on Facebook’s global backbone network; the computers, routers and software in its data centers around the world along with the fiber-optic cables connecting them. “During one of these routine maintenance jobs, a command was issued with the intention to assess the availability of global backbone capacity, which unintentionally took down all the connections in our backbone network, effectively disconnecting Facebook data centers globally,” Janardhan said Tuesday.

Lt Gen Anjum named as new ISI chief ISLAMABAD, OCT 6 (PTI): In a surprise military shake-up, the Pakistan Army on Wednesday announced that the powerful spy agency ISI chief Lt Gen Faiz Hameed has been appointed as Peshawar Corps Commander - a crucial position in view of the Taliban’s takeover of neighbouring Afghanistan. Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum was appointed as the new Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in place of Lt Gen Hameed, who was transferred as Peshawar Corps Commander, said the InterServices Public Relations (ISPR) – the media wing of the Pakistan Army. The ISI chief is appointed by the prime minister but as part of a tradition he executes this power in consultation with the Pakistan Army chief. The post of ISI chief is considered one of the most important in the Pakistan Army, which has ruled the country for more than half of its 73 plus years of existence and has hitherto wielded considerable power in the matters of security

Nepal sending a high-level delegation to India KATHMANDU, OCT 6 (IANS): In a bid to reach out to the Indian leadership, Prime Minister of Nepal Sher Bahadur Deuba is sending a high-level delegation to India at the invitation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Nepali Congress Joint Secretary, former Foreign Minister and head of party’s international department Prakash Sharan Mahat is leading a threemember delegation to India and is arriving in New Delhi on Thursday, the party has said. Mahat said that he is visiting India at the invitation of Vijay Chauthaiwale, in charge of BJP Foreign Department who had earlier visited Kathmandu in early September. The visit aims to strengthen the party to party ties and will deepen interaction between the political leadership of the two countries, Mahat said. The delegation will spend four days in New Delhi and will brainstorm on how to improve the ties and how to move ahead in the future too, Mahat added.

Biden, Xi to abide by Taiwan pact WASHINGTON, OCT 6 (AGENCIES): U.S. President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that he has spoken to Chinese President Xi Jinping about Taiwan and they agreed to abide by the “Taiwan agreement”, as tensions have ratcheted up between Taipei and Beijing. “I’ve spoken with Xi about Taiwan. We agree ... we’ll abide by the Taiwan agreement,” he said. “We made it clear that I don’t think he should be doing anything other than abiding by the agreement.” Biden appeared to be referring to Washington’s long-standing policy under which it officially recognizes Beijing rather than Taipei, and the Taiwan Relations Act, which makes clear that the U.S. decision to establish diplomatic ties with Beijing instead of Taiwan rests upon the expectation that the future of Taiwan will be determined by peaceful means. While that act binds the United States to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself, Washington only acknowledges China’s stance that the island belongs to it and that there is “one China”, and takes no position on Taiwan’s sovereignty. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said it had

World economic axis tilting towards Indo-Pacific: Boris LONDON, OCT 6 (PTI): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday zeroed in on UK’s focus on enhancing relations with “friendly countries” in the Indo-Pacific, as he declared that the world was tilting on its economic axis towards the region. In his flagship speech at the ruling Conservative Party annual conference in Manchester, Johnson pointed to the recently signed AUKUS security agreement between Australia, the UK and the US as a sign of this enhanced focus on the region. He reiterated his central message of creating a global Britain, with greater freedom to define the country’s post-Brexit foreign policy as a result of leaving the European Union under his leadership. “If you want a supreme example of global Britain in action, of something daring and brilliant that would simply not have happened if we had remained in the EU (European Union), I give you AUKUS,” said the 57-year-old Prime Minister, to applause from his Cabinet ministers and thousands of

sought clarification from the United States about Biden’s comments, and were reassured U.S. policy towards Taiwan had not changed, the U.S. commitment to them was “rock solid” and that the U.S. will continue to help Taiwan maintain its defenses. “Facing the Chinese gover nment’s militar y, diplomatic and economic threats, Taiwan and the United States have always maintained close and smooth communication channels,” it said, noting recent U.S. comments of concern about China’s activities. The remarks to reporters at the White House

- made after Biden’s return from a trip to Michigan touting a spending package - come amid escalations in the Taiwan-China relationship. China claims Taiwan as its own territory, which should be taken by force if necessary. Taiwan says it is an independent country and will defend its freedoms and democracy, blaming China for the tensions. Taiwan has reported 148 Chinese air force planes in the southern and southwestern part of its air defense zone over a four-day period beginning on Friday, the same day China marked a key patriotic holiday, National Day.

Lt Gen Anjum, who belongs to the Punjab Regiment of the Pakistan Army, has served as Karachi Corps Commander as well as the commandant of Command and Staff College Quetta. He is considered as a battle-hardened who commanded the Frontier Corps Balochistan as its Inspector General and oversaw many operations against terrorists. His predecessor Lt Gen Hameed from the Baloch Regiment was appointed as head of the spy agency on June 16, 2019. He had previously served in the ISI as the head of internal security. Hameed, who is considered close to Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, had served in the ISI for twoand-a-half years before being promoted to the rank of Lt Gen. P

eople newly infected with COVID-19 might soon have access to what essentially is Tamiflu for the novel coronavirus, a breakthrough that experts say would drastically alter the course of the ongoing pandemic. At least three contenders are vying to become the first antiviral pill that specifically targets C OV I D - 1 9 , a c c o r d i n g to reports from drug manufacturers. Such a pill could be prescribed by your doctor and taken while you recuperate at home, potentially limiting the impact of a COVID infection on your body. Merck & Co.’s antiviral drug molnupiravir leapt into the lead on Friday. That’s when the company announced it will ask for quick U.S. approval for emergency use of their pill, after clinical trials showed it halved patients’ risk of hospitalization or death from COVID. But two other candidates also are well along in clinical trials:

Powerful new COVID antivirals are coming one from Pfizer Inc. and another from Roche and Atea Pharmaceuticals. If they prove safe and effective, these drug candidates could kee p people infected with COVID out of the hospital and prevent those around them from contracting the coronavirus, experts said. “These are all dr ugs that in one way or another interfere with the multiplication of the virus,” said Dr. William Schaffner, medical director of the Bethesda, Md.-based National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. “If you were exposed and the virus is already in your body starting to multiply, if we could get in there early with these drugs that inhibit their multiplication, obviously the virus can’t spread to other parts of your body -thus sparing you developing illness or getting a milder illness,” Schaffner said. “It also would make you less contagious to others.” People living with a COVID patient also might

E

nglish singersongwriter Adele has announced her first single in almost six years. She took to social media on Tuesday to say that she will release ‘Easy on Me’ on October 15, reports Variety. com. She posted on Instagram a black-andwhite video with a piano melody. “Easy On Me October 15,” she wrote. It will be a presumptive lead single from her upcoming fourth album -- the first after 2015. records in a number of markets, including the UK and the US. Adele Laurie Blue Adkins is one of the world’s best-selling music artistes, with sales of over 120 million records under her belt. Her debut album ‘19’ was released in 2008. By 2014, Adele was regarded as a British cultural icon, with young adults from overseas naming her among a group of people whom they most associated with UK culture, which included Wi l l i a m S h a k e s p e a r e, Queen Elizabeth II, David Beckham, J.K. be able to get a prescription for one of these antivirals, Schaffner said. “It might well be that we could give these drugs to family members who are exposed and never have them develop any infection at all,” Schaffner said. Existing treatments are flawed T h e r e a r e a l r e a dy antiviral treatments available for people in the early throes of COVID, but they each

have flaws that limit their usefulness. Doctors have been using remdesivir -- a drug developed to treat Ebola -- to curb the damage done by a COVID infection, but its effectiveness is limited, said Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar with the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “What we’ve seen so far, drugs like remdesivir are not really knockout

punches because they are kind of repurposed” from the viruses they originally targeted, Adalja said. Monoclonal antibodies also can attack the virus in early infection, but “as you know they’re in short supply and they’re pretty darned expensive,” Schaffner said. “They have to be given either intravenously or through a series of multiple injections under the skin, all of which makes things even more

expensive, and you have to go to designated locations for treatment.” Adalja said, “What we’ve always needed is a Tamiflu equivalent to keep people out of the hospital, to decrease complications, but it takes time for antiviral drugs to be made because they’re so specific to the viruses that are causing disease.” Prescribed for flu, Tamiflu (oseltamivir) reduces flu symptoms and shortens recovery time. Merck’s announcement was electrifying, in part because the clinical trial results from molnupiravir we r e s o p o s i t ive t h a t an independent data monitoring committee recommended stopping the study early so the company could pursue an emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Early results from phase 3 trials showed that molnupiravir cut the risk of hospitalization or death from COVID-19 by about 50%. Around 7% of

Veteran actor Arvind Trivedi passes away

V

eteran actor A r v i n d Trivedi, best known for playing Raavan on the popular 1986 mythological show “Ramayan”, died on late Tuesday evening following a heart attack. He was in his early 80s. According to the actor’s nephew, Kaustubh Trivedi, the actor had been unwell for a long time and breathed his last around 10 pm at his residence here in suburban Kandivali. “He had a lot of age related health issues and was not keeping well. He was in the hospital earlier and had come home only recently. He died of a heart attack at his residence around 10-10.30 pm,” Kaustubh told PTI. His last rites were held at Dahanukar Wadi cremation ground, Kandivali, on Wednesday morning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to Arvind Trivedi, describing him as an “exceptional actor” who was passionate about public service. Besides his acting career, in 1991, Arvind Trivedi was elected as a Member of Parliament from

Sabarkatha constituency as a member of Bharatiya Janata Party and was in the office till 1996. “We have lost Shri Arvind Trivedi, who was not only an exceptional actor but also was passionate about public service. For generations of Indians, he will be remembered for his work in the Ramayan TV serial. Condolences to the families and admirers of both actors. Om Shanti,” the prime minister said in a tweet. A host of celebrities, including his co-stars from “Ramayan”, also took to social media and mourned Arvind Trivedi’s demise. Actor Arun Govil, the on-screen Ram from “Ramayan”, remembered his co-star and dear friend as “a noble, religious and simple” person. “Undoubtedly, he will

go straight to the supreme abode and will find the company of Lord Shri Ram,” Govil tweeted. Actor Dipika Chikhalia, who essayed the role of Sita in “Ramayan”, w r o t e, “ M y h e a r t f e l t condolences to his family …a very fine human being #arvindtrivedi #ravan.” Actor Sunil Lahri, seen in the role of Lakshman in “Ramayan”, said he was deeply saddened by the news as he has lost a dear friend and a well-wisher. “There is very sad news for all of us. Our b e l ove d A r v i n d b h a i (Ravan of Ramayan) is no more with us. May his soul rest in peace. …I am speechless. I lost a father figure, my guide, well wisher & gentleman.” Arvind Trivedi also served as the chief of the Central Board for Film

Certification (CBFC) from 2002-2003. Current CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi also paid homage to the late actor on Twitter. “Saddened to hear the news of respected Arvind ji’s death. He was a good actor and also spent a few years guiding the #CBFC. Prayers. #Ar vindTrivedi# arvindtrivedi,” Joshi wrote. “Sad to know about the demise of well known theatre, tv & film actor #ArvindTrivedi ji due to massive heart attack. My heartfelt condolences to his entire family & near ones. Om Shanti,” wrote filmmaker Ashok Pandit. Arvind Trivedi acted in nearly 300 Hindi and Gujarati movies and found immense popularity on the Ramanand Sagar 1986 TV series “Ramayan”. T h e a c t o r ’s o t h e r works, including TV series “Vikram Aur Betaal” (1985) and the 1998 Gujarati feature film “Desh Re Joya Dada Pardesh Joya”, were also huge hits. (PTI)

COVID patients treated with molnupiravir were either hospitalized or died within a month of taking the drug, compared with 14% of patients who received a placebo. The analysis was based on data from 775 patients who’d enrolled early in the trial. Keeping people at home is a priority “We always believed antivirals, especially an oral antiviral, would be an important contribution to the pandemic,” Daria Hazuda, vice president of infectious diseases and vaccine discovery at Merck, told the Washington Post. “Keeping people out of the hospital is incredibly impor tant, given the emergence of variants and the continued evolution of the virus.” Merck’s news comes on the heels of Pfizer’s announcement early last week that it had entered phase 2/3 clinical trials for a COVID antiviral it calls PF-07321332. Pfizer’s drug candidate would be taken in combination with the antiretroviral HIV drug ritonavir to see if it could keep COVID from spreading to healthy trial participants living in the same household as someone with a confirmed infection, the company said in a statement. The trial plans to enroll up to 2,660 people who

will be randomly assigned to receive either the pill or a placebo twice daily for 5 to 10 days. Meanwhile, Roche and Atea Pharmaceuticals announced positive early results for its own experimental antiviral, AT527, in late June. Early data from phase 2 trials showed that in two days the pill reduced the viral load of COVID patients by 80% on average compared to placebo. However, the early analysis only involved data from 62 hospitalized, highrisk patients. The Roche-Atea pill wound up clearing about 47% of patients within two weeks, making them completely COVID-free. By comparison, 22% of people taking a placebo were cleared of COVID in the same time frame. Roche and Atea expect to announce more results from phase 2 and 3 trials later this year, the companies said. The prospect of curbing COVID at home with a pill is cause for cautious celebration, Schaffner said. “Isn’t it great that we have at least three different firms working on three different drugs?” Schaffner said. “It’s like the Olympics. We want to see who gets there first, but we would like to see all three of them be successful.” (By Dennis Thompson)

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2021

Team Alpha & Rohit Jain to represent Hockey: India sweeps FIH annual awards India at the World Esports League MEN’S OLYMPIC CHAMPION BELGIUM SAYS THIS IS NOT NORMAL LAUSANNE, OCT 6 (PTI): India swept the International Hockey Federation’s annual awards on Wednesday, claiming all the top honours based on a voting system which was lambasted as a “failure” by men’s Olympic champions Belgium, prompting the FIH to say that it would try to figure why some associations did not cast their ballot. F ive I n d i a n p l ay ers and the head coaches of both the men’s and women’s teams in Tokyo claimed the top honours across different categories after fetching the maximum votes. The men’s hockey team had won a bronze, its first in 41 years, in the Tokyo Olympics, while the women’s side had finished an unprecedented fourth in the showpiece. Harmanpreet Singh won the men’s ‘Player of the Year’ award and Gurjit Kaur was recognised as the best player in the women’s section. Veteran

P R Sreejesh and Savita Punia won the best goalkeeper awards in the men’s and women’s section, while young striker Sharmila Devi (women) and Vivek Sagar Prasad (men) were adjudged best rising stars. The drag-click duo of Harmanpreet and Gurjit were the top-scorers in their respective team’s stellar run at the Games. Men’s team coach Graham Reid and women’s coach Sjoerd Marijne were also voted the best. While Reid is still with the team, Marijne’s tenure ended af-

ter the Tokyo Games. Hockey Belgium reacted sharply to the announcement of the winners and questioned the process as none of their Tokyo Games champions managed to win an award. Votes from National Associations -- represented by their respective national captains and coaches -- accounted for 50 per cent of the overall result, while fans and players (25 per cent) as well as media (25 per cent) made the other half of the votes. It is to be noted that

only 19 associations from the 42-strong European bloc cast their votes, compared to 29 out of 33 in Asia. “Hockey Belgium is very disappointed with the outcome of @FIH_Hockey Star Awards. A gold winning team with multiple nominees in all categories but doesn’t win a single award demonstrates failure of the voting system. We will work with FIH to ensure a fairer system in the future,” the Belgian association tweeted. The sentiment was shared by the team’s official handle as well. “We fully agree! This is not normal! The credibility and image of our sport is once again facing hard times. It’s a pitty (sic) @ FIH,” stated the Red Lions. In all, 79 National Associations voted, the others being Africa (11 out of 25 Member Associations), Oceania (3 out of 8), and Pan America (17 out of 30). “And with a record

Nasum, Lamichhane nominated ICC Player of the Month

DUBAI, OCT 6 (IANS): Bangladesh spinner Nasum Ahmed, Nepal leggie Sandeep Lamichhane and USA’s power-hitter Jaskaran Malhotra have been nominated for the ICC Player of the Month for September 2021, with both the men’s and women’s nominees featuring a strong list of candidates. Nasum Ahmed was Bangladesh’s star performer in their home T20I series against New Zealand, leaving the visitors bamboozled with his accurate line and length. He picked up 8 wickets in the series with a sensational performance of 4/10 in the fourth match.

Nasum Ahmed impressive run in the month of September, emerging as the standout bowler in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2. Playing six ODIs, he picked up 18 wickets at an average of 7.38. His

performance against Papua New Guinea, where he ended up with figures of 6/11, grabbed the attention of one and all. His exploits helped him make significant gains in the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings. The third nominee, Jaskaran Malhotra of the USA, also had a month to remember. He became only the fourth player to hit six sixes in an over in an international fixture. This feat came against PNG in a CWCL2 fixture in a scintillating knock of 173*. Overall, in six ODIs he scored 261 runs at an average of 87, at a strike-rate of 104.40.

Following Belgium’s objection, FIH issued a statement to clarify its stand and promised a review if necessary. “As one can see, all winning athletes have topped the standings in each of the three voting groups...As always FIH will conduct a review of the FIH Hockey Star Awards and make adjustments wherever deemed necessary. In particular, we will focus on establishing why a number of national associations failed to vote,” it said. The nominations from Belgium (men) and the Netherlands (women), who were not only crowned Olympic Champions but also won the 2020-21 FIH Hockey Pro League, finished behind the Indians once the votes were counted.

RSA convenes meeting DIMAPUR, OCT 6 (NPN): Rengma Sports Association (RSA) has convened its third consultative meeting on October 9, at Phenwhenyu Council Hall, 11 am, to be hosted by Kasha Daho. All office bearers, women representatives, technical committees, and representative platinum committees have been informed to attend the said meeting without fail.

NEW DELHI, OCT 6 (IANS): Team Alpha and Rohit Jain have sealed their places for the upcoming global finals of the World Esports League 2021 scheduled from December 16-19 at the Gwangju Esports Arena in Korea. Owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, the India Qualifiers were held virtually last week. The World Esports League 2021 is hosted by Technoblood Inc. and organised by the WSL organising committee in association with the International Esports Federation. A four-member Team Alpha, comprising of engineering and management students including captain Ashmit Raj, Shashank Jain, Sravanth Saranu and Harschit Jain (substitute), emerged victorious in Brawl Stars event in the India Qualifiers, which witnessed top-notch competition between the country’s eight top teams. “I have been playing Brawl Stars since it was released and now it’s an honour for me to lead the Indian team in its maiden appearance at the global final in this game. I would like to thank the federation (ESFI), who have been very supportive and professional. We will give our best to bring glory for the country in the finals,” said Ashmit, the skipper of Team Alpha. On the other hand, the qualifying event of the popular fighting game Tekken7 saw participation of 35 top athletes from across the country. However, Delhibased Rohit Jain impressed with his skilful game and

clinched the top honours. “Last couple of years have been really good for me. I have had very good finishes in the last few tournaments of ESFI but somehow representing India did not happen. However, today all the hard work paid off and I am ready for my debut international tournament. I look forward

to making this opportunity even more special by clinching the medal,” said Rohit. The global finals of the World Esports League 2021 will boast a prize pool of USD 400,000 as the world’s top athletes will be seen in action across games like Tekken7, Brawl Stars, PUBG and Eternal Return.

becomes first Indian woman IPL: Hyderabad seal narrow 4-run win over RCB Anshu wrestler to reach World C’ship final

ABU DHABI, OCT 6 (IANS): Sunrisers Hyderabad sealed a narrow four-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in Match 52 of the IPL 2021 at Sheikh Zayed Stadium here on Wednesday. Hyderabad defended 142 against a Bangalore batting line-up which threatened briefly to chase down the target. Bangalore were given an early jolt with Bhuvneshwar Kumar trapping Virat Kohli in front with an incoming delivery in the first over. Daniel Christian’s promotion to three backfired as he chipped a catch to mid-off off Siddarth Kaul. KS Bharat slammed two boundaries before falling to gloving behind off Umran Malik in the seventh over. Rashid Khan’s first ball to Glenn Maxwell was hoicked over deep mid-wicket in the eighth over. When Khan returned for his next over, Maxwell took on him again, slogsweeping over long-on for

boundaries, to bring the equation to 18 runs in the last two overs. Ahmed was dropped by Kumar at longon in the start of the 19th over but pulled straight to mid-wicket on the fourth ball off Jason Holder. With 13 needed off the final over, AB de Villiers slammed a six straight down the ground off Kumar. But Kumar conceded just one run off the final ball to give Hyderabad a slim win. Brief Scores: Sunrisers Hyderabad 141/7 in 20 overs (Jason Roy 44, Kane Williamson 31, Harshal Patel 3/33, Daniel Christian 2/14) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore 137/6 in 20 overs (Devdutt Padikkal 41, Glenn Maxwell 40, Umran Wriddhiman Saha and Kane Williamson of Sunrisers Hyderabad celebrate the runout Malik 1/21, Siddarth Kaul of Glenn Maxwell of Royal Challengers Bangalore during the IPL cricket match. Padikkal ended in the 15th over as a direct hit from a sliding Kane Williamson at cover caught the right-hander short of his crease while taking a quick single. Padikkal’s painstak-

ing struggle to break free ended when he holed out to deep mid-wicket off Khan in the 17th over. Shahbaz Ahmed took eleven off Malik in the 18th over, including two

OSLO (NORWAY), OCT 6 (PTI): Anshu Malik on Wednesday created history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the World Championship final when she outclassed junior European champion Solomiia Vynnyk even as Sarita Mor lost her semifinal after shocking world champion and will fight for a bronze here. The 19-year-old Anshu, the reigning Asian champion, controlled the semifinal from the beginning and won by technical superiority in the 57kg category to go into history books. Only four Indian women wrestlers have won medals at the Worlds and all of them -Geeta Phogat (2012), Babita Phogat (2012), Pooja Dhanda (2018) and Vinesh Phogat (2019) -- have clinched bronze. Anshu also became only the third Indian ever to make the Worlds gold medal match after Sushil Kumar (2010) and Bajrang

Anshu Malik Punia (2018). India has only one world Champion in Sushil till date and Anshu can create another history on Thursday. Anshu’s win also ensured India’s first medal from this edition of the event. Anshu was clever with her moves. At least thrice, she effected takedown moves from the left of Vynnyk and finished the bout with an exposure move. The Nidani girl started competing in the senior circuit only from last year and has made a steady progress since then. She also had qualified

for the Tokyo Olympics. Earlier, she was hardly troubled by Kazakhstan’s Nilufar Raimova, whom she beat by technical superiority and later outwitted Mongolia’s Davaachimeg Erkhembayar 5-1 in the quarterfinals. Seasoned Sarita Mor shocked defending champion Linda Morais 8-2 in her opening bout and beat Germany’s Sandra Paruszewski 3-1 in the quarterfinals. Up against the reigning European champion from Bulgaria Bilyana Zhivkova Duodova, Sarita fought her heart out but lost 0-3. She will now fight for a bronze. The reigning Asian champion had a tough opening bout against the 2019 World champion from Canada but came out trumps with a tactical 8-2 win in the pre-quarterfinals. A quick take-down move, followed by an expose together with some superb defence put Sarita 7-0 ahead by the time the first period was over.

Giorgio Chiellini ‘ashamed as an Gasol retires after 23-year career, 2 NBA titles, 3 Olympic medals Italian’ after Napoli trio abused ROME, OCT 6 (AGENCIES): Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini said he was ashamed “as an Italian” by the racist abuse directed at Napoli players by Fiorentina fans on Sunday. Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who is Black, said he was abused by Fiorentina fans, while the Gazzetta dello Sport reported his team mates Victor Osimhen and AndreFrank Zambo Anguissa were also targeted after their 2-1 win. Napoli retweeted Ni-

Giorgio Chiellini gerian Osimhen’s statement on the abuse while Fiorentina condemned the incident. Chiellini, speaking to

reporters ahead of Italy’s game against Spain on Wednesday, said the abuse was “unacceptable”. “We need laws and rules that are applied, this is the most important thing,” he said. “I was ashamed, as an Italian and a Tuscan, also because Italy is not a racist country for me. “Something more must be done, otherwise from outside we give a bad image of ourselves.” Italian football has been plagued by racism.

BARCELONA, OCT 6 (AGENCIES): Spanish basketball great Pau Gasol announced on Tuesday that he is retiring from the sport after a 23-year career. “I’m here to tell you that I’m going to retire from professional basketball. It’s a difficult decision after so many years but it’s a decision I’ve taken carefully,” Gasol, 41, told a news conference at Barcelona’s Liceu theatre. Gasol, who stands 7 feet 1 inch, made his professional debut in 1998 with Barca as a centre before being signed by NBA

side Memphis Grizzlies in 2001. He won NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009 and 2010 while being chosen in the All-Star team on six occasions. Gasol later played for Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs and had a brief stint with Milwaukee Bucks plus four months at Portland Trail Blazers, where injury prevented him playing. He returned to Barcelona earlier this year, helping his boyhood club end a seven-year wait to win the Spanish championship in June. Gasol was a

Pau Gasol talisman for Spain, helping them win the Olympic silver medal at the 2008 and 2012 Games plus bronze in 2016. He recovered from almost two years out injured to compete at the 2020

Olympics in Tokyo, where Spain lost in the quarterfinals to eventual winners the USA in his final international. Gasol began the news conference by detailing his battle to overcome a stress fracture he suffered in his left foot in 2019. “Not many doctors thought I’d be able to recover but I’m a person who likes challenges and I wanted to fight to do the improbable,” he said. “I got to the point where I was relaxed about my career ending, I was at peace. But when things went well I took the deci-

sion to sign for Barcelona which wasn’t in my plans. But I managed to win the league with the club where it all began and where I made my debut. It’s been very special.” Gasol also paid tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, his old Lakers team mate who died in a helicopter accident in January 2020. “I’d have liked him to have been here today but sometimes life is unfair,” Gasol added. “He taught me to a better competitor, a real winner, I considered him like an older brother.”
