DGP clarifies on social media post D I M A P U R , M AY 7 (NPN): Taking note of a post being circulated on social media over felling and transportation of some timbers at Police complex Chümoukedima, DGP Nagaland TJ Longkumer has issued a clarification stating that “all speculations and rumours” were “factually incorrect”. In a press note, DGP said that felling of around 50 number trees were necessitated due to security reasons to the under-construction VIP guest house and also posed hazard to the existing Police mess and cottages. Pointing out that the trees were on the land under Police department, DGP said all due procedures were followed in removal and disposal of the trees and the proceeds of the trees were to be deposited to PHQ. “After due process and permissions, we proposed to use it to develop a Horti Orchard in the space cleared under the supervision of 1st NAP, as a Police Welfare measure,” he said, adding that many police units have such welfare schemes e.g. fisheries, orchards etc. DGP said that the rejoinder is being issued as the tone and language of these posts may have conveyed some element of mistrust in the mind of people about the intention and procedure of cutting these trees.

India’s daily Covid-19 cases continue to rise
3,805 fresh cases in last 24 hrs; States slam WHO report
NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (AGENCIES): Registering a steady rise in Covid-19 cases, India on Saturday reported 3,805 fresh Covid-19 cases, according to the updated Union Health Ministry data. There were 3,168 recoveries reported in the last 24 hours, the data noted. The country witnessed 22 Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, as per the Health Ministry data. Notably, the county’s active cases also increased to 20,303 on Saturday, the Health Ministry data further revealed. Meanwhile, a resolution was passed at the conference of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare (CCHFW) on Friday strongly objecting to the WHO’s estimates of 4.7 million Covid-19-linked deaths in India. The resolution stated that the modelling methodology used to reach the figure is “flawed” and that the WHO estimate is “unacceptable” to India as the country records Covid deaths systematically following a transparent and legal process, official sources said. On the second day of the CCHFW conference in Kevadia in Gujarat, around 20 state health ministers unanimously rejected the WHO report and urged Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to convey the country’s disap-
pointment to the WHO and raise it at higher international forums. The state health ministers included those from Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Sikkim and Maharashtra. In its report released on Thursday, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that nearly 15 million people were killed either by the coronavirus or by its impact on overwhelmed health systems in the past two years, more than double the official death toll of 6 million. Most of the fatalities were in Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas. According to the report, there were 4.7 million Covid deaths in India -- 10 times the official figures and almost a third of Covid deaths globally. The WHO report was discussed at the 14th conference of the CCHFW on Friday. According to the resolution, India has a robust, legally mandated, comprehensive system of death registration. Under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act-1969, states and union territories document actual number of deaths in the country. The Health Ministry

Thursday strongly objected to the use of mathematical models by the WHO for projecting excess mortality estimates linked to the coronavirus pandemic in view of the availability of authentic data, saying validity and robustness of the models used and methodology of data collection are questionable. India is likely to raise the issue at the World Health Assembly and other multilateral forums, sources in the ministry said. India has been consistently objecting to the methodology adopted by the WHO to project excess mortality estimates based on mathematical models, the ministry said in a statement. “Despite India’s objection to the process, methodology and outcome of this modelling exercise, WHO has released the excess mortality estimates without adequately addressing India’s concerns,” it said. India had also informed the WHO that in view of the availability of authentic data published through the Civil Registration System (CRS) by the Registrar General of India (RGI), mathematical models should not be used for projecting excess mortality numbers for India.

Centre spent Rs 2,65,513 cr on various infra projects in NE from 2014-21: Rai NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (AGENCIES): Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai said that an amount of Rs 2,65,513 crore has been spent from the year 2014 to March 2021 for the development of various infrastructure projects in the North East region. Rai said this while addressing a seminar organized by the Assam Rifles on the topic ‘Economic growth is pre-requisite to address deeply rooted insurgencies in the North East’ in Delhi. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that the “North East region was neglected because overall development of the country was seen in segments. The vast potential of this sector will be unleashed by creating modern infrastructure and improving connectivity”. Today, he said national development is being seen with the spirit

of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”. Development is now considered synonymous with the unity and integrity of the country, he added. He said the Prime Minister described the economic development of the region as not only a contributor to the overall development of the nation, but also has seen it as the integration of the region with the rest of the country. Along with this, he said the decision of the Prime Minister to remove the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFPSA) from some areas of the North East
also highlighted the possibilities of huge development in this area. Rai also said that under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, talks with various extremist organizations and meetings with states have brought about a vast improvement in the security situation in the North East and the youth are rapidly joining the mainstream of development. Rai said that over the decades, the ideology of rebellion has shifted from social issues to political aspirations, hunger for unquestionable power and monetary gains. “The innocent youths of the region got caught in the vicious cycle of pseudo-nationalism and weapons. The economic deprivation and lack of job opportunities coupled with drug menace pulled this generation further into the web of extremism,” he said.

tency in the political leadership of any organization was dangerous and would lead to self-destruction. Kenye said he and those who joined NDPP felt more secure with the leadership of NDPP and exuded confidence that they will be able to overcome any eventualities through it.
Describing Neiphiu Rio as “very senior and well experience leader” of Naga people, Kenye said the party trust Rio’s leadership and has confidence that he “will lead us to a better front and have much more higher achievements in all aspects for our people.”
At the programme, NDPP unit also welcomed some of the NPF functionaries of 17th Chizami AC, led by its president Huruda Rahuyi. Kekhwengulo Lea also spoke at the programme. The programme was chaired by Raruveyi Swuro, president NDPP 17th Chizami A/C.

on March 22. Since April 2021, prices have risen by Rs 190 per cylinder. Non-subsidised cooking gas is the one that consumers buy after exhausting their quota of 12 cylinders at subsidised or below-market rates. However, the government pays no subsidy on LPG in most cities and the price of the refill that consumers, including the poor women who got free connection under the muchtalked Ujjwala scheme, is the same as non-subsidised or market price LPG. Rates differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes such as VAT. Prices are higher in
states with higher taxes. Petrol and diesel prices however continue to be on freeze for over a month now. The pause followed rates being hiked by a record Rs 10 per litre in a matter of 16 days beginning March 22. Earlier this month, the price of commercial LPG cylinders - the one used by establishments like hotels and restaurants - was increased. To compound things, the Indian rupee tumbled to a near Rs 77 to a dollar. India relies on overseas purchases to meet about 85 per cent of its oil requirement, making it one of the most vulnerable in Asia to higher oil prices.

a party in the BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga arrest case, and that the May 6 CCTV footage of Janakpuri and Kurukshetra police stations be preserved. The Punjab government has alleged that its police personnel were “detained” at Janakpuri and Kurukshetra police stations when they had gone to arrest Bagga in connection with a case registered against him at Mohali last month. In the wake of Bagga expressing fear about his safety, the Delhi Police on Saturday said it will make
necessary security arrangements for him. Meanwhile, the National Commission for Minorities wrote a letter to Punjab Chief secretary over alleged reports that “Bagga was allegedly not allowed to wear his turban during his arrest by Punjab police”, and has requested that a factual report on the alleged incident be submitted within 7 days Earlier in the day, the Delhi Police said that a medical examination of Bagga revealed injury marks on his body.
D I M A P U R , M AY 7 (NPN): Peren police has issued a clarification in connection with the May 5 incident where one minor school girl was allegedly raped in New Jalukie. In a press note, PRO Peren police said that though the victim was assaulted by the accused, “she managed to resist and shout for help causing the accused to run away before further harm could be done.” PRO also said that “subsequent medical examination confirmed that rape did not occur”. However, intention of the accused with regard
to attempt to rape is being examined as part of the case investigation, PRO said. Following a complaint filed on May 6, police apprehended the accused and registered a case under the relevant provisions including POCSO Act. PRO appealed to all concerned to refrain from issuing statements presumptively on such sensitive issues without first establishing facts as these may cause an undesirable law and order situation, further trauma to the victim and family, besides also hindering the ongoing investigation of the case. GUWAHATI, MAY 7 (AGENCIES): A tornado reportedly hit Assam’s Barpeta on Saturday, taking residents by surprise as they shared videos of the rare weather phenomenon on social media, reports East Mojo. Meanwhile, the meteorological department has forecast thunderstorms coupled with moderate to heavy rains over the next few days for the entire north-eastern region. “A low-intensity tornado hit Chenga district in Assam’s Barpeta on Saturday. It is not a cyclone,” Dr Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Deputy Director-General of Meteorology at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati, told EastMojo. A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from the base of a thunderstorm down to the ground and is capable of completely destroying well-made structures, uprooting trees, and hurling objects through the air.

GUWAHATI, MAY 7 (PTI): The Assam Police on Saturday said it was aware of the insurgent group ULFA(I)’s claim of executing two of its own members. United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) claimed to have carried out a ‘death sentence’ against two of its cadres, Dhanjit Das alias Rupak Asom and Sanjib Sarma alias Rishav Asom, for allegedly spying for government agencies and instigating other cadres to leave the organisation. “We have seen the ULFA (I)’s statement. It is the ULFA who is claiming that they are spies. We don’t want to comment,” Inspector General of Police (Special Branch) Lachit Barua told reporters. The “death sentence” was pronounced by the proscribed body’s “lower justice council” after the two confessed to the charges against them, an email sent

IMPHAL, MAY 7: Poumai, one of the major tribes of Manipur, has declared the areas inhabited by them as drug and poppy free region in support of Manipur government’s ongoing “war on drug”. Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh appreciated the Poumai tribe for the resolution and declaration, saying that it was quite encouraging and supportive to his government’s mission of making Manipur drug free. Poumai is one of the major tribes of Manipur who predominantly live in the Senapati district of Manipur, though they also reside in villages in Ukhrul district and Nagaland. A delegation of the Poumai tribe, led by MLA J Kumo Sha; president of Poumai Naga Union, D Dailord Pao; president of Poumai Naga Women’s Union, P Delilah Pao; and other CSO leaders on Saturday called on the chief minister in Imphal today. They submitted a
resolution of the tribe declaring Poumai areas as drug free zones and against poppy plantation adopted in a general body meeting of the tribe held on April 28 last. As per the resolution, Poumai Naga Union (PNU) adopted the decision in recognition of chief minister N Biren Singh’s war against drugs and after a threadbare discussion on the importance of preserving, conserving the forest land resources and in the larger interest of the people and its future. The general body resolved to curb and control the plantation of poppy or any other forms of drugs in the Poumai Naga Area and its jurisdiction, it read. “Henceforth, the House unanimously declared the Poumai Naga Union and its jurisdiction drug free zone on this day, the 28th April, 2022,” the resolution submitted to the chief minister stated. Opposition parties reject Delhi police makes U-turn in ‘hate Modi reviews NEP’s, calls for delimitation panel report on J-K speech’ case in SC, lodges FIR developing hybrid learning NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday advocated developing a hybrid system of online and offline learning to avoid overexposure of schoolchildren to technology, as he chaired a high-level meeting to review the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP). The new policy is being rolled out with the objectives of access, equity, inclusivity and quality, he said, according to an official statement. Modi said the databases maintained by anganwadi centres should be seamlessly integrated with school records as children move there from anganwadis, and called for their regular health check-ups and screening in schools with the help of technology. Pitching for emphasis on the use of indigenously developed toys to develop conceptual skills in students, he also suggested that secondary schools with science labs should engage with farmers in their area

for soil testing, the statement said. Lauding the new education policy, he said from special efforts to track outof-school children and bring them back into the mainstream and the introduction of multiple entry and exit in higher education, many transformative reforms have been initiated that will define and lead the progress of the country as it enters the ‘Amrit Kaal’. Modi was apprised that the work of the formulation of the National Curriculum Framework under the guidance of the National Steering Commit-
tee is in progress. In school education, initiatives like quality ECCE in ‘Balavatika’, NIPUN Bharat, Vidya Pravesh, examination reforms and innovative pedagogies like art-integrated education, toy-based pedagogy are being adopted for better learning outcomes and holistic development of children, the statement said. Referring to multidisciplinarity in higher education, it said he was informed that the guidelines for multiple entry-exit for flexibility and lifelong learning along with the launch of academic bank of credit on digilocker platform will now make it possible for students to study as per their convenience and choice. In order to create new possibilities for lifelong learning and centrally involve critical and interdisciplinary thinking in learners, the UGC has published guidelines according to which students can pursue two academic programmes simultaneously.
JAMMU, MAY 7 (PTI): Several opposition parties on Saturday jointly rejected the delimitation panel report as “highly objectionable, biased and politically motivated” and called for an emergency meeting here on Monday. However, many Gujjar and Bakerwal organisations welcomed the reservation of nine assembly seats for Scheduled Tributes (STs) and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for it. The delimitation panel on Jammu and Kashmir, formed in March 2020, on Thursday notified its final report giving six additional assembly seats to the Jammu region and one to the Kashmir Valley and bringing areas of Rajouri and Poonch under the Anantnag parliamentary seat. The Jammu division will now have 43 assembly seats and the Kashmir division 47 in the 90-member house. Ja m m u - b a s e d A l l Parties United Morcha (APUM), comprising Congress, National Conference, CPI(M), CPI besides several social organisations, rejected the final delimita-
tion report, claiming that it is highly partisan, motivated and against all basic norms of delimitation like contiguity, connectivity, population, physical feature and public convenience. “The commission has totally ignored the ground realities and neglected the convenience and aspirations of the people of different areas,” the APUM said in a statement here. claimed that the exercise of the commission was an “eye wash” as the report was prepared at the “behest” of the ruling BJP. The APUM has called for an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the situation emerging after the “highly objectionable” report, the statement said and appealed to all like-minded parties and organisations to come together to raise their voice against the report. “A large number of representations were submitted by the general public and opposition parties within a short period of time after the publication of the draft report but hardly any genuine objections or representations were considered.
NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (IANS): Days after the Supreme Court pulled up Delhi police on its affidavit in hate speech case at a Dharam Sansad, the police have made a U-turn and told the court it registered an FIR after examining the materials. In a fresh affidavit, the police said that all links given in the complaint and other materials available in public domain were analysed, and a video was found on YouTube. “After further minute verification of the materials, FIR dated May 4,2022 has been registered at police station Okhla Industrial Area for offences of Section 153A, 295A, 298, and 34 of the Indian Penal Codea,” said the affidavit. The police said the investigation will be carried out in accordance with law. The Delhi Police, in its earlier affidavit, said: “The findings of the inquiry after visual and audio examination of the evidence further disclose that the speech did not contain any hate words against a particular community, and persons who gathered there with
a motive to save the ethics of their community”. The police said there was no use of such words which mean or could be interpreted as open calls for genocide of Muslims in order to achieve ethnic cleansing or an open call for murder of an entire community’ in the speech. On April 22, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the petitioners, said the Delhi Police said an inquiry was conducted into the matter, and justified that person gathered to save ‘ethics of their community’. Sibal said: “Your lordships may have to decide constitutionally, what ethics are?” A bench headed by Justice A.M. Khanwilkar noted that the affidavit was filed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police and queried Additional Solicitor General (ASG) K M Nataraj, “Do you accept this position....we want to understand.....Has any superior officer verified this?” The bench, also comprising Justice Abhay S. Oka, said: “We want to know that the senior officer has understood the nuances
of other aspects before filing this affidavit. Has he merely reproduced an inquiry report or applied his mind? Do you want to take a relook?” Justice Khanwilkar further queried: “Is it your stand as well... the reproduction of the inquiry report of the sub-inspector level officer?” Nataraj, representing the Delhi Police, said: “We have to take a re-look”. Justice Khanwilkar asked Nataraj: “Do you want to have a relook at the whole matter?...Is this the stand of Commissioner of Police, Delhi?” Nataraj submitted that a fresh affidavit will be filed, after taking instructions from the authorities concerned. The top court noted that the ASG sought more time to file a better affidavit in the matter. The Supreme Court was hearing a plea -- filed by journalist Qurban Ali and former Patna High Court judge and senior advocate Anjana Prakash -- seeking direction to ensure investigation and action against those who allegedly made hate speeches during events held in Haridwar and Delhi, last year.
Shah dines at Sourav’s house; raises speculations DMK completes a year; Stalin announces schemes KOLKATA, MAY 7 (PTI): A day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid a visit to his residence and had dinner with his family, which grabbed attention, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly Saturday spoke of his close relation with Chief Minister, who is known to be a strident critic of the BJP. Ganguly, former Indian cricket team captain, also showered praise on minister and city mayor Firhad Hakim describing him as a person who can be approached by anyone at any time of the day. “Our honourable Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a person very close to me. I had approached her to help up this institute,” he said at the inauguration programme of a private hospital here. The former southpaw said, “I am also very close to Firhad Hakim. He has
Cong to discuss ‘alliance hurdles’ at Chintan Shivir NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (IANS): The Congress is gearing up for its Chintan Shivir in Rajasthan’s Udaipur next week and party president Sonia Gandhi has sought a draft report from the sub committees on Monday ahead of the CWC meet which will formalise its agenda. Sources say among the political resolutions, the alliances will be the key focus on the lines of the Shimla Shivir, which paved the way for the government in 2004. Sources say that as suggested by political strategist Prashant Kishor, the party will focus on how to take like-minded parties on board and start the consultation process just after the Chintan Shivir. The problem crops up where the party is pitted against regional parties, as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said there will be no alliance with the TRS and warned all the leaders not to talk about it. Similarly in Andhra Pradesh, the party has to make a choice between the TDP or going alone as YSRCP is unlikely to go with the Congress. The party is in alliance with the DMK in Tamil Nadu, with JMM in Jharkhand and with the NCP-Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. In the North East, either the BJP or the regional parties have replaced the Congress and the alliance with the AIUDF failed in Assam.

been seeing me since I was in Class 1. He has been our family friend. All who approach him get help. I too have called him several times,” Ganguly said. Shah’s visit to Ganguly’s residence on Friday had fuelled speculation that the former cricketer would join politics soon. The dinner was reported to be a close family affair where besides Ganguly and his wife danseuse Dona
Ganguly, the cricketer’s elder brother Snehasish Ganguly and other family members were hosts. Shah was accompanied by BJP idealogue, Swapan Dasgupta, the party’s state president Sukanta Majumdar and the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal assembly, Suvendu Adhikari. Aware of the conjectures, Ganguly had said on Friday, “Many speculations are rife … but I have
known him (Shah) since 2008. While playing, I used to meet him. There’s nothing more than that”. He had also pointed out he had worked with Shah’s son, Jay Amitbhai Shah, in the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Jay Shah is the BCCI secretary. Dona Ganguly had said there was no discussion on politics during Shah’s visit to the Ganguly residence. “It is human to speculate. But if there is any news, everyone will know.” She had also said, “I don’t know whether Sourav will enter politics or not. But he will do well if he joins politics. I believe he will do good work for the people”. Ganguly had visited the state secretariat on April 28 and met Banerjee regarding allocation of land to the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), of which he is the president, to build a stadium.
NEET PG exam not postponed, will happen on May 21: PIB NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (PTI): The Press Information Bureau Saturday said this year’s NEET PG exam has not been postponed, and will happen on the scheduled date of May 9, terming “fake” a notice issued in the name of the National Board of Examinations that the paper has been rescheduled to July 9. The National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) Satur-
day also cautioned stakeholders against “false and bogus information” being circulated in its name. This comes after a section of the media reported that NEET PG exam this year was postponed to July 9. In a tweet, the Press Information Bureau Fact Check handle said, “A FAKE notice issued in the name of the National Board of Examinations claims that the NEET PG exam has been
postponed & will now be conducted on 9th July 2022. The exam has not been postponed.” The exam will be conducted on 21 May 2022 only, it added. The NBEMS at present conducts postgraduate and postdoctoral examinations in approved specialties leading to the award of Diplomate of National Board (DNB) and Doctorate of National Board (DrNB) respectively.
CHENNAI, MAY 7 (PTI): Marking completion of a year in office, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday announced in the Assembly five new schemes including breakfast for state-run school children and underscored the achievements so far while the main opposition AIADMK boycotted the proceedings. A special nutrition scheme for children within 6 years of age, urban clinics and schools of excellence based on the Delhi model
and extension of ‘Chief Minister in your constituency,’ plan across all the 234 Assembly segments were the 4 other new schemes he announced. The main opposition AIADMK, skipped the day’s proceedings of the House and dubbed as ‘false propaganda’, the DMK government’s claims and achievements vis-à-vis its 1 year rule. Governor R N Ravi greeted the government and extended his best wishes. In his near hour-long
address in the House, Stalin also reiterated his social justice driven inclusive ‘Dravidian model’ of governance followed by his government. Presenting a report card in the House on the 1-year achievements of the DMK government led by him, Stalin said between 60 and 70 per cent of electoral promises made ahead of the 2021 Assembly election have been fulfilled though the assurance was to implement them over a period of 5 years. “I will not say
that I have achieved everything in 1 year. I could definitely say that we have done more than what is possible within a year,” he said amid thumping of treasury benches. Financial crunch and the stand of the union government on some matters were the obstacles that hindered further speedy implementation of schemes and progress, Stalin said. If these two hindrances had been absent, “we could have devised many more schemes,” he said.

Encouraging mothers
M
other’s Day is celebrated across various parts of the world to honour the mother of the family or individual, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It began in the United States in the early 20th century at the initiative of Anna Jarvis, who organized the first Mother’s Day service of worship and celebration at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, Ann Jarvis had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. In 1914, the 28th President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honour mothers. The significance of the day (Mother’s Day) lies in the fact that society acknowledges the role of a mother and the task of fulfilling the role as parent. A mother is broadly understood as a woman who gives birth to a child. The task of taking care of a child is called mothering. Though it is deemed that all mothers fulfil their duties of mothering; the reality is that, this may not be the same in all cases. The two-mother and mothering – are vital attributed that are highlighted on Mother’s Day. This has also raised the issue between a good and a bad mother. It may be loosely explained that a mother who is involved in mothering is a good mother while a mother is not mothering is a bad mother. Besides caring, nurturing and protecting her children, a good mother is an exemplary wife. She brings all the family together. The opposite is true of a bad mother who neglects her responsibility in the upbringing of her children and her husband. There are many good mothers yet few godly mothers. The bible describes the values of a virtuous woman in Proverbs 31. The chapter defines a virtuous woman as one who leads her home with integrity, discipline, and more. All the virtues she practices are aimed at making her husband’s life better, teaching her children, and serving God. Through the sacrificial love, a mother also makes a better husband and father. Though both fathers and mothers equally share the responsibility of making a home; mothers play a prominent role in the development of spiritual values in the family. These virtues make a good mother and that is the ideal that is sought to be promoted as Mother’s Day is celebrated. A godly mother raises a child and determines the character of that child and so influences the type of society that the next generation will create. That is why there is a saying that: “the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world”. Love is the greatest motivation to do the hard work of mothering. The dregs of a society that has given up the good values because they are considered ‘old’, can be seen in society. Therefore, in a society rife with rebellion, cult of crime, drugs and immorality, society has to encourage good mother to be godly mothers and need all the encouragement and prayers so that they can play their roles in being the rudder of the family and by extension, society.
DailyDevotion Building For Eternity
Which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it… —Luke 14:28
Our Lord was not referring here to a cost which we have to count, but to a cost which He has already counted. The cost was those thirty years in Nazareth, those three years of popularity, scandal, and hatred, the unfathomable agony He experienced in Gethsemane, and the assault upon Him at Calvary— the central point upon which all of time and eternity turn. Jesus Christ has counted the cost. In the final analysis, people are not going to laugh at Him and say, “This man began to build and was not able to finish” (Luke 14:30). The conditions of discipleship given to us by our Lord in verses 26, 27, and 33 mean that the men and women He is going to use in His mighty building enterprises are those in whom He has done everything. “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple ” (Luke 14:26). This verse teaches us that the only men and women our Lord will use in His building enterprises are those who love Him personally, passionately, and with great devotion— those who have a love for Him that goes far beyond any of the closest relationships on earth. The conditions are strict, but they are glorious. All that we build is going to be inspected by God. When God inspects us with His searching and refining fire, will He detect that we have built enterprises of our own on the foundation of Jesus? (see 1 Corinthians 3:10-15). We are living in a time of tremendous enterprises, a time when we are trying to work for God, and that is where the trap is. Profoundly speaking, we can never work for God. Jesus, as the Master Builder, takes us over so that He may direct and control us completely for His enterprises and His building plans; and no one has any right to demand where he will be put to work.

otherhood is another ‘term’ for ‘ l ove w i t h o u t measure’. At least a day is set aside globally to acknowledge the sacrifice of mothers for their children and husbands. Mothers’ Day is just a minuscule gratitude gesture. Good mothers are the epitome of love and sacrifice, while unfaithful mothers may counter represent God’s love for humanity. Finding a good mother almost equals finding God. Advice from Sirach The book of Sirach was written in about 180 BC in Jerusalem. This book contains pragmatic ways to live righteous and civic life. Sirach vividly exposes children’s duty towards their parents Children, listen to me; I am your father. Do what I tell you and you will be safe, for the Lord has given fathers authority over their children and given children the obligation to obey their mothers. If you respect your father, you can make

up for your sins, and if you honour your mother, you are earning great wealth. If you respect your father, your own children will make you happy; the Lord will hear your prayers. If you obey the Lord by honouring your father and making your mother happy, you will live a long life. Obey your parents as if you were their slave. Honour your father in everything you do and say so that you may receive his blessing. When parents give their blessing, they give strength to their children’s homes, but when they curse their children, they destroy the very foundations.Never seek honour for yourself at your father’s expense; it is not to your credit if he is dishonoured. Your own honour comes from the respect that you show to your father. If children do not honour their mothers, it is their own disgrace. My child, take care of your father when he grows old; give him no cause for worry as long as he lives.
Be sympathetic even if his mind fails him; don’t look down on him just because you are strong and healthy. The Lord will not forget the kindness you show to your father; it will help you make up for your sins. When you are in trouble, the Lord will remember your kindness and will help you; your sins will melt away like frost in warm sunshine. Those who abandon their parents or give them cause for anger may as well be cursing the Lord; they are already under the Lord’s curse (Sirach 3:1-16). Mother’s Love Mothers may rarely say,’I love you,my child,’ but their actions of sacrifice and dedication are o u t wa r d s s y m b o l s o f their eternal love. Mothers speak less but express more in their actions. “We should remember that saying ‘I love you’ is only a beginning. We need to say it, we need to mean it, and most importantly, we need to consistently show it. We
need to both express and demonstrate love” (David A. Bednar). More than once, more than one person has explained and narrated the four-letter word “LOVE”. Each perception is, of course, diverse. This word has a deep meaning, and its scope for the interpretation seems to widen the more we try to define it. Despite the already existent thousand explanations not entirely accepted definitions of love, I would like to add another description. For me, love would mean sharing myself with another person - my mental, spiritual and physical resources. This sharing of spiritual and material resources is best seen in a mother’s love for her children. The feelings and emotions evoked by the presence or absence of someone whom we love are still in the realm beyond verbal expression. But that is part of love. Love involves Sacrifice
To say “I Love You” to any breathing being would entail costs beyond description. It demands sacrifice, patience and adjustment with the other individual. To say I love someone is like saying I am ready to be stretched, sacrificed and wounded. It is an expression of willingness to go the extra mile to be informed more about them. It is an awareness that life is too short not to make the best use of it for another person. To share oneself entirely with at least another person before the last whistle for exit (death) would be one of the most meaningful ventures of life on earth. It would be an actual achievement in life. This sort of love, most mothers impart to their children. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not
delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hope, always perseveres. Love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:4-8).If you have already experienced love from your parents, well-wishers, teachers and friends, it is time you extend those blessings to others as well. I f we wa n t g o o d mothers, we need to train up our children in the proper way. We need to educate our daughters, empower them and make them self-sufficient. We need to encourage and protect all women so that we have healthy and enlightened mothers. We pray for good daughters who would become good mothers for a decent society. Maa ki Daal – A Mother’s day Non-recipe The influence of Godly mothers
A
nna Jarvis would have never known this Indian recipe of “Made by Mom Lentils.”Thanks to her, my mom would definitely be gifted a vessel, bowl, a spoon, a ladle, a container, tiffin etc. to do something with my dish of Daal, this Mother’s day, 2022. Since class Ten students are currently “dieting” for their board exams, let me be definition specific. Maa ki Daal is an Indian dish, that is Person/ Gender specific, deified, revered and most importantly a dish, when mentioned by someone manifests a yearning for home, whether in heart or just to emphasize humility by those who had left home for other greener Daal’s of the world. Maa ki Daal would, in its true sense, translate into Home-cooked foodwhen you have failed learning how to cook on your own or grown tired of all others, or when you and your wife start downloading food-apps. Let’s say, Model-Actor-New Mother- Priyanka Chopra, declares that I miss ‘Maa ki Daal’ the most. And in the NICK of time, it becomes a Mother’s day MUSKY tweet. Musky would then mean an aromatic tweet hit, a solo dish, a standELON from the crowd. Dear,MARK my words, the most likes &comments will come from those who exited home, recently or not. As an Indian boarding School product, I must admit Daal must have greased my digestives and palms on par with the Indian wedding of Bribes and goons. It’s nutritious, fair enough, but not being served everyday to the extent of having made me hear Maa ki Daal as an Indian expletive. Pardon me. That’s also a standelon thought. But Papa, Daddy ki Daal ? Many men or fathers cook better but lentils happen to rhyme with petals, and daal with mom’s rumaal, Shawlshaal to wipe away a child’s tears.(No maternal word rhymes. Try it) Ironically, in my childhood Church, I have noticed that men on Father’s Day are gifted Face towels & hankies mostly with a pronounced thought that “it’s lovingly wrapped to wipe away the sweat of your toil”. Haha, Daddy, mom wiped my
tears with her rumaal my whole life, now you wipe your sweat. And with that, the way to a child’s heart is also through Maa ki Daal. Leave the Man out of the quote until June when his BAAP ka Daal may come or not. While Daal comes with a GI tag, copyrighted, dad and sons are left with ordering Daal Makhani with a Ma. Dad’s favourite, as most Dad’s of North-east Indian tribes is also Masoor, unintentionally.(The foremost Indian lentil entrant Masoor became musoor, musoorie, mungshul etc. with mother tongue influence) Mother’s day is indubitably a tender day where most children, (including little children and adult children) have poetry in their hearts thinking of what to write, gift, cook, organise to make the day special for their mothers. For those without mothers, it’s a day to reminisce and perhaps make it even more special by joining in the parade of happiness by wishing or gifting a mother-in law, a mother figure, a neighbourly aunt, a lonely Grandmother, further extendable to the long distanced Priyanka Chopras of the world, through social media’s help. I sadly do not have a mother-in-law anymore so I might speak mataphorically, on behalf. My Mother’s prayer, Coat of many colors, my mother, sweet mother, Meri Maa, Hymns, Pop, soft rock hits, filmy songs all will spring up and fill our human & Phone drives. For rock lovers, Metallica is Maatallica for Delhi- Haryana belters, historically. O z z y ’s “ M a m a I coming home”, written for Shannon matures into a “for Kelly’s mom” song. Anything with Mama, whether Bohemian Rhapsody for Mama, just killed a man…, Mama Mia, Maa tujhe salaam, Mother Mary comes to me, whisper words of wisdom……………. Anything with Mama, just let it be. Ma’s the word. To f lip the pages of “Écriture féminine”, or women’s writing of the world, MA-ya Angelou instantly came to mind for “The Mothering Blackness”- her poem about homecoming, repentance, acceptance and forgiveness. (read in order as Motherland,
mother-tongue, Mom’s hug & Maa ki daal)It simply relates to many of us who left home through work, studies or marriage and pine for the embrace of that all-encompassing forgiveness. Yes, Maa ki daal or mom’s home-cooked food is forgiveness, in entirety. For good or bad, life or death, one tends to ultimately seeksone’s motherland, hometown or village. One wishes to pray, joke, testify, laugh in one’s mother-tongue, yo u w i s h yo u r m o m hugs you, pats you for the years away (whether successful or not) and then forgiveness is when you finally get to eat her home-cooked food. The Maa ki Daal or Mom’s cooked food is Nirvana, in its own intrinsic quality, not understood in gastronomical terms. Maya Angelou also coined the inerasable term Phenomenal Woman, the poetry of which captures the spirit of a woman or womanhood, or in essence the innate qualities of those divinely blessed to become mothers. Never has the word Phenomenal meant so Phenomenal. This poem has phrases like -It’s in the reach of my arms, the sunshine of my smile, the joy in my feet and most of all the final stanza : N ow yo u u n d e r stand/Just why my head’s not bowed. /I don’t shout or jump about Or have to talk real loud. /When you see me passing/It ought to make you proud./I say,/It’s in the click of my heels, / The bend of my hair,/the palm of my hand, The need for my care. /’Cause I’m a woman/Phenomenally./ Phenomenal woman, / That’s me. I cannot take away the “writing by women, for women” aspect of ecriture feminism. Feminist writers & critics have stated that “language is not a neutral medium, it can be said to function as an instrument of patriarchal expression. And thus, an antithesis of masculine writing, or a means of escape for women was established as such. Though I would not disrespect that thought, I would rather take childlike joy in its magic of writing as experienced, not imagined. Like Maa ki daal, which in everyway is as phenomenal as her. others do influence their sons and daughters! One of life’s greatest blessings is to have a godly mother. And, thus, one of the greatest gifts you can give your children is to be a godly mother. Not only are godly mothers’ women of sincere faith, but also, they seek to hand off that faith to their children. Timothy’s faith could be traced back through his mother to his grandmother. He could see the Lord in them, and it attracted him to the Lord. Godly mothers honour God’s Word and train their children in it (3:14-17). Mother should be the primary agents for teaching their children God’s Word, pray for godly mentors for their children, such as Paul was to Timothy. Pray for godly Sunday School teachers, youth workers, elders, pastors, or other men and women of God to influence your children for righteousness. The main way your children will grow up to love and serve God is through His Word. God’s Word of truth is powerful to save (James 1:18). A preacher was often away from home
preaching. Once, as he was on his way to a service, he feared that he was neglecting his own family while caring for the souls of others. So, he turned back and went home. When he came in the house, everything was quiet, except for the voice of his wife behind the bedroom door. He listened and heard her pleading earnestly in prayer for the salvation of all her children, and especially for her strong-willed first-born, Charles. His father thought that with his wife caring so well for the spiritual interests of his children, he could go on about the Lord’s business, so he left again for his preaching engagement without disturbing her. So a crucial task for godly mothers is to pray for and use the Scriptures to lead each of her children to faith in Christ. God’s Word is mighty to save, but also is sufficient for all of life and godliness (2 Pet. 1:3) Dear mothers & sisters in Christ, let us re-dedicate our life as we celebrate Mother’s Day. Happy Mother’s Day! Esther Murry AGEI Women Ministry
A unique day to honour all the mothers
A
mother’s position in a child’s life is irreplaceable, and we can all agree that this is an unquestionable truth. Of all the relations known to us, a mother’s bond with her child is above everything else because of their undying love, dedication and devotion to kids. Our mothers dedicate a large part of their lives to nurturing us and making us into better humans. From feeding us our first morsel to hearing our first words to handling our tantrums to providing us with a shoulder to cry on when we grow older, a mother is present in every stage of our lives. And Mother’s Day is a celebration to honour our mother’s selfless love and each sacrifice they make for their children. On this day, people celebrate mothers, motherlike figures in their lives and even grandmothers. Of all the relationships known to humans, there is one that effortlessly outperforms everything else. It’s the relationship that a mother and her children share. It’s truly valuable because nothing can come close to a mother’s unending love, dedication, and devotion to her children. The mother fiercely ensures that the young ones feel protected at all times around her and shapes their personality to make them battle all odds in life. Generally, the women in our lives help to shape our lives in significant ways. There are notable psychological benefits attached to the celebration of Mother’s
Day. Being a mom is one of the hardest and thankless jobs there are. So much is done that no one sees. And how often do people stop to thank you when everything goes as planned? No other change in a mother’s life comes as suddenly and quickly as welcoming a new baby. You don’t gradually transition into motherhood the way you might other roles in your life. Popular media would suggest if you’re a mom you’re always happy, fulfilled and joyous—and if you’re not, somehow you’re not measuring up. Motherhood is idealized, and this is especially true around Mother’s Day. But the day we honor mothers is the best time to dispel the myths of idyllic motherhood and give ourselves the gift of taking the pressure off. It is a unique day honouring mothers, who are sometimes neglected for their contributions. It’s a day to celebrate her unselfish contributions to her children’s achievements. It’s also a day to express gratitude for that. There is one human relationship that outperforms others. It’s the bond that exists between a mother and her children, which is priceless as nothing compares to a mother’s love, commitment, and devotion to her children. From the moment a child is born, the mother works to ensure that they are safe and that their personalities bloom. Mother’s Day is celebrated to honour the
contributions of all moms. Mothering takes effort—physical, mental and emotional—so whether or not we have a paid position, we can pat ourselves on the back at the end of the day for a job well done. Mother’s Day is celebrated in a number of countries worldwide. However, not all countries celebrate it on the same day. It is observed on the second Sunday in May in numerous countries. India is one such country. In India, Mother’s Day is on May 8 this year. Mother’s Day is a special occasion that honours all mothers, who are sometimes overlooked for their contributions. While mothers have always held a unique position in Indian culture, the idea of celebrating Mother’s Day was originally proposed in the early 1900s. According to some versions, Mother’s Day was first observed in 1908 by a woman called Anna Jarvis in the United States, in honour of her mother, who had died three years previously. Several parts of the United States began honouring this day within a few years. It was made a national holiday by US President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. People attempt to make sure that their mother is happy and enjoys her life regardless of when this day is observed around the world. They may surprise her with gifts, take her out to dinner, or even prepare a meal for her at home. Asenla Jamir, Kohima not reflect the view of this newspaper nor that of the Editor in any manner.

Indian households battling inflation’: Rahul slams LPG cylinder hike
NEW DELHI/KOLKATA/PANAJI, MAY 7 (PTI/IANS): The Congress on Saturday slammed the government over the hike in price of domestic LPG cylinder with former party chief Rahul Gandhi saying millions of Indian households are waging a difficult battle against “extreme inflation”, unemployment and “poor governance”. The Opposition party also said the central government should roll back the hike in the price of domestic cooking gas cylinder and bring it to the same level as it was for the subsidised cylinder in 2014. The price of domestic LPG cylinders was raised by Rs 50 on Saturday. With the latest revision, the 14.2 kg domestic cylinder will now cost Rs 999.50/cylinder from Saturday, according to reports. Gandhi said during the Congress-led UPA government, the price of an LPG cylinder was Rs 414 and a subsidy of Rs 827 was being given on every cylinder. “Today, the cost of a cylinder is ?999. The amount
According to him, the price of a subsidised gas cylinder in Delhi in May 2014 was Rs 414, which has now become Rs 999.50, an increase of more than Rs 585. Surjewala urged the government to “bring down the price of subsidised cooking gas to the level of 2014”.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera also took a dig at the government over inflation by garlanding two gas cylinders and lighting incense sticks in front of vegetables at the party headquarters. He said this was a condolence meeting for the gas cylinder.

of subsidy given is ‘zero’,” he said. The Narendra Modi government has removed all safety nets that the Congress had put in place to protect the common man, Gandhi alleged. “Today, millions of Indian households are waging a difficult battle against extreme inflation, unemployment, and poor governance,” the former Congress chief said in a Facebook
post.
“The Congress party would have never let this happen. We have and always will support families in need,” he said with the hashtags ‘MehengaiMuktBharat’ and ‘BJPFailsIndia’. After the news of a hike of Rs 50 in the price of domestic LPG cylinder, the Congress also claimed that the Modi government has increased the price of sub-
sidised cooking gas by over Rs 585 in the last eight years and also ended the subsidy that was given. Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted, “BJP is rich, people are helpless. The price of subsidized LPG cylinder has increased two and a half times under the BJP rule. LPG cylinder is now out of reach of the middle class and the poor.”
Mamata Banerjee
After the news of a hike of Rs 50 in the price of a domestic LPG cylinder, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday alleged that the BJP-led central government is “tormenting” the people of the country by regularly raising prices of fuel. She
also accused the Centre of conducting a “great Indian loot” by hiking prices of petrol, diesel, LPG and other essential commodities. “The Union government must immediately stop tormenting the people of India! By repeatedly increasing fuel prices, LPG prices & prices of essential commodities, @BJP4India is actually conducting a Great Indian Loot. People are being fooled,” Banerjee said on Twitter. The price of domestic cooking gas was increased by Rs 50 per cylinder on Saturday, the second increase in the last two months, taking the price to Rs 1,026 in Kolkata.
‘No need to worry’, Goa CM’s wife on LPG, fuel price hike
Sulakshana Sawant, wife Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, on Saturday, borrowed her husband’s pet phrase ‘Bhivpachi garaz na’ (there’s no need to worry), when asked to comment on rising prices of fuel, domestic gas cylinders and milk in the state. Sawant said that the price rise will have to be “tolerated” for sometime, adding that a solution for rising inflation would emerge for sure. “The prices have not just increased in the state alone, but across the globe. To curtail the impact, the government has laid stress on social schemes. I feel that we do not have to worry. We will have to tolerate it for sometime. But something will work out for sure,” she told reporters, when asked to comment on rising prices of essential commodities. Chief Minister

Ready for peace talks with Storm brewing in Bay of Bengal, SC gets two new judges; top court Chhattisgarh govt, say Maoists to intensify into cyclone today set to regain full strength of 34
NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (PTI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday asked the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to develop infrastructure at a faster pace through the use of technology, citing how the Chinese side has increased its presence in the Northern sector by carrying out construction activities in mountainous areas. Singh also said that the development of border areas is a major part of the government’s “comprehensive defence strategy”, noting that it will bolster the overall security apparatus of the country. In an address at an event to celebrate the 63rd Raising Day of the BRO, he also said that providing maximum facilities to those guarding India’s borders is the top priority of the government. “The Chinese presence has increased in the Northern sector in the recent past. Due to their proficiency in construction in mountainous areas, they manage to reach different places very quickly,” the defence minister said. “The BRO must continue to work in parallel and focus on increasing their capability with full use of technology,” he said adding

the government is making all efforts to provide the required support to the BRO. After the eastern Ladakh face-off began in May 2020, India has been focusing on improving infrastructure along the over 3,400 km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC). In his remarks, Singh mentioned the recent announcement to an increase of the capital budget of BRO by 40 per cent to Rs 3,500 crore in the financial year 2022-23, reiterating the government’s commitment to the country’s security and development of border areas. He assured the BRO of not just budgetary, but all possible support. “The more empowered the people of border areas become, the more aware and concerned they will be about the security of those areas. Citizens are the greatest power of a nation,” Singh said.

The weather office has said that the sea conditions were likely to become rough from Saturday onwards and have advised fishermen not to venture into the Andaman Sea and southeast Bay of Bengal on Saturday and Sunday.
ADP example of cooperative federalism: Jitendra NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (PTI): The aspirational district programme (ADP) has emerged as a shining example of competitive and cooperative federalism, Union Minister Jitendra Singh has said. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2018, the ADP is aimed at localising sustainable development goals, leading to the progress of the nation, said Singh, the Minister of State for Personnel. In a statement issued on Saturday by the ministry here, Singh said the aspirational district concept is based on objective parameters and the programme is scientifically designed with evaluation based on certain essential indices. Accordingly, 112 districts were identified across the country for special focus to bring about transformation, said Singh, while reviewing the progress of work being carried out in Sitamarhi district of Bihar on Friday evening under the ADP. Sitamarhi is one of the 13 aspirational districts in Bihar. Singh said ADP has emerged as a shining example of competitive and cooperative federalism, where districts are prod-

ded and encouraged to first catch up with the best district within their state, and subsequently aspire to become one of the best in the country by competing with and learning from others, the statement said. He said that the broad contours of the programme are convergence of central and state schemes, collaboration of central, state level ‘prabhari’ officers and district collectors, and competition among districts through monthly delta ranking; all driven by a mass movement. Regarding the work done in Sitamarhi under ADP, Singh noted with satisfaction that it has made considerable improvement across various socio-economic indicators and the district is one of the top performers from the state under the education scheme. In education, the district has strived to improve
ture and has also initiated innovative best practices such as initiation of modern libraries, initiating a mass movement to have wholehearted participation from students, teachers and parents, which can be replicated in other districts, it said.

DANTEWADA, MAY 7 (PTI): Responding to the Chhattisgarh government’s proposal, the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoists) has shown willingness to hold peace talks with the Bhupesh Baghel-led dispensation, but also set several conditions, including the release of their jailed leaders and withdrawal of security forces from strife-torn areas. However, a state minister said talks would be held, if any, only unconditionally. T h e d e ve l o p m e n t comes nearly a month after Chief Minister Baghel said that his government was ready to hold talks with the rebels if they expressed faith in the Constitution. Chhattisgarh is one of
Bastar, including the Jhiram valley attack in Bastar district on May 25, 2013, in which top congress leaders were killed. Referring to the chief minister’s statement about the Constitution, the banned outfit said the governments had been violating the constitutional rights of the people. T h e g o ve r n m e n t s have been violating rights bestowed on gram sabha under PESA (Panchayat (Extension of the Scheduled Areas) Act) and Fifth Schedule of the Constitution, it claimed. “Our response to the talk offered by the CM is that we are always ready to hold a dialogue on the condition that the government creates a conducive environment for it,” it said. The conditions set by Maoists for talks include withdrawal of ban on the party and its frontal organisations, opportunity to work freely, stopping aerial strike, removal of camps of security forces and withdrawal of forces from strifetorn areas and release of their jailed leaders for talks, the statement said.

is to manage the shortage of foreign exchange within the shortest possible time and restore the supply of goods and services,” the statement added. The government said discussions are ongoing with the multi-lateral institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, to obtain financial assistance and restructure outstanding debt. “Political stability and peace in society are two major conditions that are demanded in building confidence and strength to make such programs a success,” the statement said, explaining the need for the emergency. Sri Lanka is currently in the throes of unprecedented economic turmoil since its independence from Britain in 1948. The crisis is caused in part by a lack of foreign currency, which has meant that the country cannot afford to pay for imports of staple foods and fuel, leading to acute shortages and very high prices. Thousands of demon-
strators have hit the streets across Sri Lanka since April 9, as the government ran out of money for vital imports; prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed and there are acute shortages in fuel, medicines and electricity supply. Despite mounting pressure, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his elder brother and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa have refused to quit office. Commenting on the ongoing negotiations, the IMF’s Colombo mission chief Masahiro Nozaki said, “The IMF team will engage with the economic team of Sri Lankan authorities from May 9 to May 23 in a virtual mission and continue discussions on the authorities’ request for an IMF-supported programme.” According to IMF assessment, Sri Lanka’s debt is unsustainable. Therefore, approval for IMF financing, including through a Rapid Financing Instrument, would require adequate
assurances that debt sustainability will be restored. Last month, the Sri Lankan government said it would temporarily default on USD 35.5 billion in foreign debt as the pandemic and the war in Ukraine made it impossible to make payments to overseas creditors. The present state of emergency gives the police and the security forces sweeping power to arbitrarily arrest and detain people. The country’s human rights body, the main lawyers’ body, the Opposition and even some members of the diplomatic community criticised the government for its move. The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka said it was deeply concerned about the promulgation of an emergency. “We urge the government to explain to the public the reasons for this proclamation since protests have been largely peaceful and within the ambit of normal police operations,” it said in a statement. “We hope that free-

ZAPORIZHZHIA/ LATV I A , M AY 7 ( A F P / AGENCIES): Ukrainian troops solidified their positions around the nation’s second-largest city Saturday as Russian forces delivered more punishing attacks on an embattled steelworks in a bid to complete their conquest of the southern port of Mariupol in time for Victory Day celebrations. As Monday’s holiday commemorating the Soviet Union’s World War II victory over Nazi Germany approached, cities across Ukraine prepared for an expected increase in Russian attacks. Officials urged residents numbed by more than 10 weeks of war to heed air raid warnings. “These symbolic dates are to the Russian aggressor like red to a bull,” Ukraine’s first deputy interior minister, Yevhen Yenin, said. “While the entire civilized world remembers the victims of terrible wars on these days, the Russian Federation wants
Ukraine lays out peace-talk demands
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky outlined his conditions Friday for entering peace talks with Russia, demanding a restoration of preinvasion borders, the return of more than 5 million refugees, membership in the European Union and accountability from Russian military leaders before Kyiv would consider laying down its arms. Zelensky’s slate of requirements, which he listed during an online forum organized by Chatham House, are in direct conflict with the military objectives Russian leaders have articulated as they bear down on the Donbas region and southern Ukraine — inflicting additional casualties Friday in apparent violation of a cease-fire.

CONDEMNATION The Eastern Nagaland peoples’ Union mokokchung strongly condemns the ruthless torture of a minor on 27th April, 2022, allegedly by Rongpangwatila (w/o mr. moamanen kichu) of Nokpu Village and a resident of Alempang Ward, mokokchung town. The act was simply diabolic and is nothing short of a blatant breach of good faith placed by the victim’s parents upon the alleged perpetrator of the crime. The scars and internal injuries on the victim’s body reveals that the culprit of the crime was physically well able to inflict maximum harm on the minor boy and therefore leaves no room for appeal for leniency post conviction for whatsoever reasons. The ENpUm, therefore place our confidence on the law enforcement authority to award befitting punishment to the culprit without fear or favour and also act swiftly to rehabilitate the victim and his family without delay.

SEOUL, MAY 7 (AP): North Korea flight-tested a ballistic missile that was likely fired from a submarine on Saturday, South Korea’s military said, continuing a provocative streak in weapons demonstrations that may culminate with a nuclear test in the coming weeks or months. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launch occurred from waters near the eastern port city of Sinpo, where North Korea has a major shipyard building submarines. It said the short-range missile flew 600 kilometers (372 miles) at a maximum altitude of 60 kilometers (37 miles) but it didn’t immediately provide details about the submarine that would have been involved in the launch. South Korean and US intelligence officials were analysing the launch, the military said, describing it as a clear violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions and a “serious threatening act that harms international peace and stability.” Japanese PM Fumio Kishida in response to the missile firing ordered officials to prepare for all “unforeseeable situations” and secure the safety of aircraft and ships.

Western military analysts said a Ukrainian counter-offensive was advancing around the northeastern city of Kharkiv while the Russians made minor gains in Luhansk, an area where Moscow-backed separatists have fought since 2014. Against that backdrop, Ukrainian fighters were making a final stand to prevent a complete takeover of Mariupol. C O L O M B O, M AY 7 (PTI): The Sri Lankan government on Saturday defended imposing a state of emergency, saying it was required to tackle the unprecedented economic crisis plaguing the country, even as President Gotabaya Rajapaksa faced flak from the Opposition and foreign envoys for his decision which gives security forces power to crack down on peaceful protests. In a special Cabinet meeting on Friday, the embattled president declared the state of emergency with effect from Friday midnight. This is the second emergency declared in just over a month. The announcement came as student activists kept the Parliament under siege since Thursday night. The students blocked the main entrance to the complex demanding the resignation of the government for its inability to handle the ongoing economic crisis marked by shortages of essentials. In a statement on Saturday, the Government Information Department said, “Sri Lanka is currently facing the worst economic crisis and political instability ever after Independence due to manifold reasons both short and long-term. The common perception is that several reforms in the sectors of political, economic and social fabric should be carried out in-depth to escape from this grave situation.” “Priority among them
dom of speech and assembly, the rights associated with arrest and detention as well as other fundamental rights and freedoms will not be affected or derogated from during the period of the emergency,” said the statement. The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) in a statement issued said it was “gravely concerned” about the declaration of a State of Emergency by the President. “As was stated earlier on April 2, 2022, when the President declared a State of Emergency for a brief period of time, the BASL remains of the view that a declaration of a state of emergency is not the answer to the present situation in the country including the spate of public protests and strikes which have occurred,” the BASL said. They have stressed that the state of emergency must not be used to stifle peaceful protests and dissent or to make arbitrary arrests and detentions. The protests in turn must not be violent and must remain peaceful at all times. The main Opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s leader Sajith Premadasa too questioned the move and urged for the resignation of the president. The Canadian High Commissioner in Colombo David McKinnon tweeted, “Over the past weeks, the demonstrations across Sri Lanka have overwhelmingly involved citizens enjoying their right to peaceful freedom of expression, and are a credit to the country’s democracy. It’s hard to understand why it is necessary, then, to declare a state of emergency.”

Being overweight amplifies the harmful effects of alcohol on cancer risk.

eing overweight or having obesity amplifies the harmful effects of alcohol on the risk of developing alcoholrelated cancer, particularly in people with a high body fat percentage, finds a new study. The findings, presented at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO), also
identified a dose-response relationship between higher obesity levels and the risk of developing obesity-related cancers, irrespective of alcohol consumption. “Our results suggest that people with obesity, especially those with excess body fat, need to be more aware of the risks around alcohol consumption,” said
researcher Elif Inan-Eroglu from The University of Sydney. “With around 650 million adults living with obesity worldwide, this is a hugely important issue. When it comes to the lifestyle factors and habits that people can change to reduce their risk of cancer, obesity and alcohol are top of the list,” Inan-Eroglu added. For this study, the team combined data from 399,575 participants, from the UK Biobank prospective cohort, who were cancer-free when the study began and followed for an average of 12 years. Cancers were identified from hospital admissions and cancer registry data. Participants were divided into three groups according to their body fat percentage, waist cir-

he path to the Emerald City might travel along the ocean’s bottom. The crew of the Exploration Vessel Nautilus caught sight of a strangelooking formation while studying an area called Liliʻuokalani Ridge in the Papahānaumokuakea Marine National Monument in the Pacific Ocean. The feature resembles a road paved in cobblestones. Impressed researchers viewing live dive footage of the formation described it as a “yellow brick road” and “the road to Atlantis,” and called it bizarre, cool and crazy in
a video released last week. Nautilus spent most of April studying the geology and biological systems of seamounts, underwater mountains with volcanic origins. “At the summit of Nootka Seamount, the team spotted a ‘dried lake bed’ formation, now ID’ed as a fractured flow of hyaloclastite rock (a volcanic rock formed in high-energy eruptions where many rock fragments settle to the seabed),” the team said. The brick-like patterns likely come from heating and cooling cycles connected to eruptions.
The exploration vessel is operated by the nonprofit Ocean Exploration Trust, which livestreams the ship’s adventures, giving viewers a firsthand look at what its remote-operated diving vehicles see in the deep. Nautilus has recorded all sorts of beautiful and unusual sea life, including cute dumbo octopuses and an oddball gelatinous creature from earlier this year. Over an average followup of 12 years, 17,617 participants were diagnosed with alcohol-related cancer and 20,214 developed obesity-related cancer. The researchers found that across all obesity markers, people with higher body fat percentage levels who drank more than the recommended guidelines were at greater risk of cancer. Regardless of alcohol intake, the analysis identified a dose-response relationship between larger waist circumference and risk of developing obesityrelated cancer. (IANS)
ver the last month or so, NASA has battled sudden, unexpected technical issues surrounding the Artemis I moon mission, a trailblazing endeavor to bring humanity back to the lunar surface. And on Thursday, the agency announced that Artemis I’s launch will probably be pushed to August, well after the previous projection of May. That’s because important prelaunch testing, NASA says, can likely resume only sometime in the middle of June. Here’s a timeline of the roller-coaster ride leading up to the mission’s most recent, rather sizable delay. Since April 1, NASA has been tr ying to get through a crucial testing sequence called the “wet dress rehearsal.” This is pretty much the final challenge before launch and its name comes from the fact that it’s focused on steps like loading the Space Launch System rocket with cryogenic fuel.
25th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
The wet dress rehearsal for Artemis I has proved to be anything but straightforward. First, Mother Nature herself delayed the process when four lightning strikes hit within the perimeter of Artemis I’s launchpad at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The agency decided to give the rehearsal another go on April 3 but was soon dealing with safety concerns regarding the SLS rocket’s mobile launcher. Basically, the
team had trouble pressurizing the launcher well enough to keep harmful gases from entering. At the time, the agency announced it would complete the wet dress rehearsal on April 4, which brought yet another setback. This time, the issue was with a vent valve, or a panel on the mobile launcher that’s meant to relieve pressure from the rocket’s core stage. The team was able to isolate the cause of concern. It’s a sentiment that
echoes the purpose of Artemis I in the first place: to remind the world that Earth’s glowing companion is filled with wonder, but also ensure we get things right every step of the way. Future Artemis missions will send astronauts to regions on the lunar surface that are untouched by humans, and simultaneously pave the way for a modern space program by landing the first woman and first person of color on the moon. Villa damages Burnley’s survival hopes in EPL Khriehu inaugurates KIC football B U R N L E Y, M AY 7 (AGENCIES): Burnley’s relegation woes deepened after losing to Aston Villa 3-1 in the English Premier League on Saturday for the team’s first defeat under interim manager Mike Jackson. Steven Gerrard’s Villa did both Everton and Leeds a big favor by ripping Burnley apart. Emi Buendia made the most of only his second start since February with a goal and an assist after coming in for the dropped Philippe Coutinho. Danny Ings scored against his old team for a fourth goal in four matches against Burnley, and Ollie Watkins applied the killer blow. Substitute Maxwel Cornet thumped home a stoppage-time consolation goal for Burnley but the damage was already done, perhaps doubly so with key defender James Tarkowski hobbling off in

the second half. Defeat means Burnley could end the weekend back in the bottom three if Leeds and Everton pick up points from tough fixtures away to Arsenal and Leicester, respectively, on Sunday. Everton is in third-topast place, two points behind Burnley and Leeds in the tight relegation scrap. Jackson took an unlikely 10 points from a possible 12 since replacing the fired Sean Dyche last
month. But a fourth straight victory, which would have matched Dyche’s tally all season, proved well beyond his side as Villa was clinical in front of goal a week after sending Norwich down with a 2-0 win over the lastplaced team. In a week where it emerged relegation would mean Burnley’s ownership must immediately repay a “significant” proportion of a 65 million pound ($80 million) loan taken out during its takeover in
December 2020, this was a result to concentrate minds at Turf Moor after a superb few weeks under Jackson. With Coutinho having made it six games without a goal or an assist last weekend, Gerrard handed Buendia a start as one of four changes to his side, and the Argentine needed a little over half an hour to register one of each. I n g s h a d a l r e a dy threatened once, curling wide after cutting in from the left, but made no mistake when Buendia’s pass split Burnley’s center halves with seven minutes gone to allow him a simple finish. Villa doubled the lead in the 31st minute after Burnley failed to deal with a deep cross. Watkins and Ings worked the ball to Lucas Digne, whose pullback to the penalty spot found Buendia and his side-footed shot went in with the help of a deflection off Tarkowski.
Things got worse after the break for Burnley when Tarkowski hobbled off to be replaced by Kevin Long, and the defence was left exposed as Watkins killed the hosts off only seven minutes into the second half. John McGinn had space to send in a cross and Watkins was afforded the freedom of the penalty area to head past the stranded Pope, sealing a win which lifted Villa to 11th. Though Cornet rounded Martinez to lash home a consolation strike, this was an ominous defeat given the Clarets must go to Villa Park in 12 days for one of the three matches left in which they can secure their Premier League future.

Khriehu Liezietsu and others after the launch at IG stadium on May 7, 2022 (DIPR)
D I M A P U R , M AY 7 (NPN): Khriehu Liezietsu, MLA, launched the Khelo India Centre Football (Boys) at Indira Gandhi Stadium Kohima on May 7, 2022. According to a DIPR report, the MLA while exhorting the gathering said it was an honour to be involved in the very relevant and successful Khelo India programme. Asserting football is a game that every Naga loves, Khriehu said Nagaland has produced some very good players in the past and the State has even done reasonably well in the recent past.
He also said that the Nagas were finding it a little difficult to cope with the competitiveness of the sports, and professionalism has taken over. “Players and sports administrators are very serious in their approach towards the game, every activity is now performance and success-oriented, this is one area I think we seriously need to focus on,” Khriehu added. He, however, expressed optimism and happiness that the youngsters were already catching up with this culture. With the setting up of Centres and programme
like Khelo India, MLA said players would soon excel and be able to compete at the highest level. He said the department of youth resources & sports as a whole was “alive and growing”. Despite many challenges and hardships, Khriehu said the department continued to give its best for the upliftment of sports and the youth of the State. The programme was chaired by DSO and administrator IGS, Dziesebeinuo Vizo, and deputy director YR&S, Jakedovo Chase delivered a short speech.
Alvarez, Bivol make weight ahead of title clash F1 drivers raise concerns over ‘bumpy’ Miami track
LAS VEGAS, MAY 7 (AGENCIES): Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Dmitry Bivol made weight Friday for their light-heavyweight world title clash in Las Vegas amid raucous support for Mexico’s Alvarez. “I feel proud to represent my country this weekend,” Alvarez said after weighing in at 174.4 pounds (79.11 kg) outside T-Mobile Arena, where fans chanted “Mexico! Mexico!” and Mariachi music played. Russia’s Bivol, whose World Boxing Association 175-pound title is on the line Saturday, weighed in at 174.6 pounds. Although Bivol is the title holder, Alvarez is undoubtedly the main attraction in the Cinco de Mayo

holiday weekend event. The Mexican star (57-1-2 drawn with 39 knockouts) will be fighting at light-heavyweight for a second time. He stopped Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round to win the WBO title in November 2019. He later vacated the title and
moved back down in weight. In November he stopped Caleb Plant in the 11th round to become the first man to unite all four of the super middleweight belts on offer. Capturing Bivol’s WBA belt could be a stepping stone to unifying the 175-pound division. “I like this kind of challenge,” Alvarez said. “Expect everything from me, like always. I’m going to try my best, do my best in the ring. And, of course, we’re going to win.” Bivol, 19-0 with 11 knockouts, will be making his fourth defense since he was made “super” champion in October 2019, and he wasn’t intimidated by the pro-Alvarez crowd.

Karun Nair, the 20-year-old showed superb game awareness and picked the gaps at ease in a 41-ball 68-run knock (9x4, 2x6) to brilliantly set it up for the Rajasthan Royals in their tall 190-run chase which was completed with two balls to spare at the Wankhede stadium.
With its first successful run-chase, the Royals team is now on 14 points from 11 matches. Placed third now, one more win will firmly put the side in contention for a top-four finish. The win also meant that the five-time champion Mumbai Indians became the first team to be eliminated from the IPL-15 season. The loss also dealt a big blow to Punjab playoff hopes as they now have 10 points from 11 matches. Jaiswal, who was retained among the three players by the franchise and was playing only his fourth match this season, came into his elements after Orange Cap holder Jos Buttler (30 off 16 balls; 5x4, 1x6) departed inside the powerplay after a flying start. Carlos Alcaraz overpowers Rafael Nadal at Madrid Open
MADRID, MAY 7 (AGENCIES): In a clash of generations, Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz overcame an injury to defeat his idol Rafael Nadal 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in the Madrid Open quarterfinals on Friday. The 19-year-old Alcaraz recovered from a bad ankle twist early in the second set to earn his first victory against the 21-time Grand Slam champion, marking what could be the beginning of a change of guard in Spanish tennis. The youngster considered by many in Spain as Nadal’s successor will play his first Madrid final against top-ranked Novak Djokovic,
Rafa Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz after Friday’s quarter-final.
who eased past Hubert Hurkacz 6-3, 6-4. It was Nadal’s first loss to a Spaniard in six years, since to Fernando Verdasco at the 2016 Australian Open. He had a 138-21 record
against his countrymen entering the match against Alcaraz. Still far from his best form after a six-week injury layoff, Nadal predicted a hard time keeping up with the energy of Alcaraz. And he was right early on, as the youngster overpowered him to easily win the first set with three breaks. But Alcaraz lost momentum after needing medical attention for his ankle, losing 20 of the next 22 points as Nadal cruised through the second set. The match also was interrupted in the second set after a fan became ill in the stands of the Caja Magica center court.
Both players got off to a great start this season as they seek their fourth title of the year, which would be the most on tour. Nadal’s run was hampered by a rib stress fracture he sustained in his semifinal win against Alcaraz in Indian Wells. His other win against the ninth-ranked Spaniard came in Madrid last year, when the youngster was just starting to attract everyone’s attention. The 35-year-old Nadal saved four match points to get past David Goffin in a third-round match that lasted more than three hours on Thursday.

Chelsea being sold for $3B to LA Dodgers owners, investors
L O N D O N, M AY 7 (AGENCIES): Chelsea will be sold to a consortium fronted by Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly, ending 19 years of ownership and lavish investment by Roman Abramovich until the Russian oligarch was sanctioned and forced to offload the Premier League club over the war in Ukraine. The sale price of 2.5 billion pounds ($3.1 billion) for the reigning FIFA Club World Cup winners and 2021 European champions is the most lucrative-ever for a sports team worldwide but Abramovich cannot receive the proceeds, which he hopes will go to a foundation for the victims of the war. A further 1.75 billion pounds ($2.2 billion) has been committed to invest in Chelsea’s teams and stadiums after two months of rapid negotiations to sell the west London club since Russia invaded Ukraine. After several rival bids were rejected, Chelsea said Saturday that buyout terms had been agreed with a consortium that features Boehly along with Dodgers principal owner Mark Walter, Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss and funding from private equity firm Clearlake Capital. The Premier League must approve them as the new ownership and the government has to sign off under the terms of the license that allows Chelsea to continue operating as a business through May 31 while being one of Abramovich’s frozen assets. Abramovich has said he would write off loans of more than 1.5 billion pounds ($1.9 billion) to Chelsea but that has been complicated
by the sanctions put in place by the British government as part of a crackdown on wealthy Russians with ties to President Vladimir Putin. Abramovich’s side positioned him as a potential peacemaker but that trail has gone silent publicly in recent weeks and the billionaire has not condemned the war. Chelsea, whose ability to sell match tickets and commit to new player spending has been hampered by the sanctions, expects the sale to be completed by late May. “Proceeds will be deposited into a frozen UK bank account with the intention to donate 100% to charitable causes as confirmed by Roman Abramovich,“ Chelsea said in a statement. Boehly is already in London and was expected to attend Chelsea’s Premier League match against Wolverhampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Thomas Tuchel’s team is third in the standings with four games remaining. The title is out of reach but Champions League qualification is nearly secured. Chelsea has the smallest and most dated stadium of the Premier League’s most successful clubs, with plans for a rebuild of the 41,000-capacity venue put
on hold by Abramovich in 2018 as British-Russian diplomatic tensions deepened. Chelsea said the 1.75 billion pounds committed will be in funding investments in Stamford Bridge, the academy and the women’s team, which can win its league title on Sunday. Boehly is part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers MLB franchise and he also has minority stakes in the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. The challenge will be maintaining the expectation of regular trophies produced under the expensive transformation of Chelsea, with 21 collected in 19 years. Chelsea had won the league title only once — in 1955 — when Abramovich bought the club in 2003. Helped by expensive signings, the club won the Premier League title two years later and has added four more since then, most recently in 2017. There is increased competition from wealthy owners to buy and retain players. In England alone, Manchester City has benefited from Abu Dhabi investment since 2008 and Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund bought Newcastle last year.
