KOHIMA, JUN 7 (NPN): Nagaland Assembly Secretariat Staff Association (NASSA) and Joint Action Committee (JAC) have on Tuesday affirmed to continue the ongoing agitation for three more days (June 8-10, 2022). NASSA is protesting the state government’s decision of appointing Dr. PJ Antony (retired officer) as principal secretary, under the establishment of the NLA secretariat. Speaking to Nagaland Post at the Assembly secretariat, NASSA general secretary, Talirenla Imchen, said that the agitation was against the NLA speaker’s “unwarranted decision”, which violated the existing service rules.
Describing the actions of the speaker as “demoralising” for the workforce of the assembly, Imchem said that association demands that decision of the government be “revoked and retracted”. She said that such “malpractices” by authorities was disappointing. JAC member, Ruyosuyi Vadeo, stated that none of the stakeholders or board members were notified with regard to the amendment of the service rules. NASSA vice president, Rocus Rino, said that if the service of the officer was “indispensable”, he could have been appointed as an “advisor or a consultant”. He said that in spite of the agitation entering the fourth day, the competent authority was still turning a deaf ear to the representation submitted by NASSA earlier. He said the association would continue to fight till the appointment of the retired officer was revoked.

DIMAPUR, JUN 7 (NPN): Lauding the government notification ordering removal of toll gates and illegal collection of money at check gates, the Nagaland Medicine Dealers Association (NMDA) has appealed to the state government not to “further re-setup” such gates. In a press release, Nagaland Medicine Dealers Association joint secretary and in-charge media cell Arijit Sharma affirmed to support the government by strengthening its hands and also by “strictly opposing” any kind of illegal collection at the gates. NMDA stated that the removal of check gates has helped the medical dealers in frequent and fast mobility of essential goods including medicines and lifesaving drugs across the state. NMDA also stated that following the move there was fall in prices of essential and non-essential commodities. Further, the association welcomed setting up of 24x7 control room, helpline numbers and inspection teams in all the districts with prominent signages in all the check gates. NMDA has vowed to keep serving people by reaching medicines in every corner of the state in every situation. NEW DELHI, JUN 7 (AGENCIES): In what could prove to be a game changer for medical science with researchers saying that for the first time cancer vanished in over a dozen people after an experimental treatment. According to New York Times report, in a small clinical trial, 18 patients were given a drug named Dostarlimab for around six months. In the end, the report mentioned, it was found that cancer had just vanished away in every patient.
In an interview with Nagaland Post, NSF president Kegwayhun Tep said that government’s decision to appoint Dr. P J Anthony, as the HoD with administrative authorities was questionable. In spite of him being a superannuated central government employee, Tep said reappointing him was unfortunate, adding that the decision needed to be rectified without any delay. The federation further appealed to the state government to reconsider its decision and undo the promotion and extension of the said officer without delay. ENSF: Eastern Naga S t u d e n t s ’ Fe d e r a t i o n (ENSF) has extended its “unwavering solidarity” towards the NASSA and appealed to the state government to re-examine
the Nagaland Legislative Assembly Service Rules Amendment notification, which was notified on May 18, 2022 and nullify the appointment of Dr. P.J Anthony “in the larger interest of the government employees of the state.” In a press note, ENSF president Chingmak Chang and assistant general secretary Kaibo Konyak said the federation deliberated at length upon the notification and condemned the “arbitrary action” of the commissioner & secretary for revision/amendments of NLA Secretariat (Recruitment and Conditions of Service) Rules 1999. ENSF claimed that the Cadre Review Committee/ Service Rules Amendment Committee, which was constituted on October 3, 2020, CIRCULAR NO.AS/CS/ CIRCLAR/2020/5 and Re-

However, ENSF stated that the Service Rules Amendment notification was approved on May 18, 2022 prior to the submission by the constituent Committee. ENSF said it implied that Dr. P.J Antony was “well in his interest to retain/continue the service even after the extension of his service (01.06.2020 to 31.05.2022) in fast track manner pursued for early approval of the notification.” ENSF stated that the state government should not maintain neutrality in meeting the justification in the common interest. It stated that any matter based on favouritism should not be entertained at any level.
NEW DELHI, JUN 7 (PTI): India has been placed at the bottom on a list of 180 countries judged for their environmental performances by US-based institutions. Denmark topped the 2022 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) published recently by the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network, Columbia University, followed by the UK and Finland, which earned high scores for slashing greenhouse gas emissions in recent years. ZVC asks PHED to reply to its memo within 60 days Centre widens pool to select next CDS

KOHIMA, JUN 7 (NPN): Zhadima Village Council (ZVC) has submitted a representation to Public Health Engineering Department’s (PHED) chief engineer in regard to the project for providing water supply to 24 villages under Chiephobozou Block. The project was sanctioned under the NonLapsable Central Pool of Resource (NLCPR) under the Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER). In the re presentation, ZVC said along with
neighbouring villages it had stopped the project on July 30, 2019 as it was incomplete and lacked credibility as there were numerous lapses in providing water supply to the earmarked villages. The tall promises made by PHED minister on July 30, 2019 to fully complete and commission the project latest by December 2019 still stood unfulfilled, stated the representation signed by ZVC chairman Neilalhoulie Soliezuo, general secretary Seyiekhrielhou Kuotsu and Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) committee chairman Roko Angami.
The village council also demanded to know which were the 11 villages where water supply was available as per PHE department’s claim in the local newspapers. It also asked why only nine villages were to be covered by pumping when originally 24 villages were earmarked for coverage under the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resource project and when more than Rs 24.96 crore had been spent. Further, the signatories asked which were the remaining 15 villages that were yet to be supplied water through independent sourc-
es and what actually were the independent sources as per the department’s claim. The village council asked the PHE department to provide its response within 60 days from the receipt of this representation. Noting that many tall promises had been made, it regretted that the project could not be completed on time and that no positive outcome had been achieved to date. Therefore, the council said it was constrained to submit the representation, cautioning that it should not be held responsible for any untoward eventuality.
NEW DELHI, JUNE 7 (PTI): Any serving or retired Lt General, Air Marshal and Vice Admiral under the age of 62 years will be eligible for appointment to the post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) with the government effecting changes to the rules to widen the selection pool for the position. The three-star officers are now eligible to become the CDS along with serving chiefs of the three services, according to the changes made to the Army, Air Force and Navy Acts. The post of Chief of Defence Staff has been lying vacant since the death of Gen Bipin Rawat
in a helicopter crash on December 8 last year. The changes made to the rules are seen as the government beginning the process to appoint the next Chief of Defence Staff amid the country facing myriad national security challenges. The government issued separate gazette notifications on Monday bringing the changes to the Air Force Act, the Army Act and the Navy Act providing for making any serving or retired Lt General, Air Marshal or Vice Admiral eligible to be appointed as the CDS. “The Central Government may, if considered nec-
essary, in the public interest, so to do, appoint as Chief of Defence Staff, an officer who is serving as Air Marshal or Air Chief Marshal or an officer who has retired in the rank of Air Marshal or Air Chief Marshal but has not attained the age of 62 years on the date of his appointment,” the notification issued under the Air Force Act 1950 said. It further said that the government may extend the service of the Chief of Defence Staff for such a period as it may deem necessary subject to a maximum age of 65 years. (Cont’d on p-8)
Poll panel to explore possibility of remote voting NPCC dares Phangnon to resign to protest BJP mixing religion with politics
NEW DELHI, JUN 7 (PTI): Days after Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar undertook an hours-long trek to a remote polling station in Uttarakhand, the poll panel on Tuesday decided to double the remuneration of polling officials going to such booths as early as three days before voting day. In a statement, the EC said to enhance voting percentage, especially among migrants, “time has come to explore possibilities of remote voting, maybe on a pilot basis”. “Voters migrate from the place of their registration to cities and other places for education, employment and
other purposes. It becomes difficult for them to return to their registered polling stations to cast their vote. EC felt that time has come to explore possibilities of remote voting, maybe on a pilot basis,” it said. A committee would be set up to examine the issues of migrant voters. Given the fact that voters and political parties are the primary stakeholders, wider consultation with all stakeholders including parties would be started thereafter, it explained. At a meeting of the poll panel, it was also decided to develop special water and shock proof, extra protective backpacks or cases to
carry EVM-VVPATs and safeguard the machines provided to all such teams to aid hands-free movement in difficult terrain. Seeking to address voting apathy in urban areas, now all central and state government departments, central and state PSUs and corporate entities with 500 plus employees will appoint a nodal officer to ascertain leave availing but non-voting employees. “It is kind of name and shame as people in poll going areas get a day’s off under the Negotiable Instruments Act with the primary purpose of facilitating voting by employees,” explained a senior functionary.
“Empathising with the dedication of polling personnel who perform election duty in remote and difficult areas, the Commission decided to double the remuneration of the polling officials going to the polling Stations three days in advance. Till now, the remuneration for polling officials used to be a uniform per diem amount for all alike. Chief Electoral Officers of the states and UTs shall specifically notify such polling stations for enhanced remuneration during election,” an EC statement said. This is the third major decision taken by the EC in the last three weeks after Kumar took over as the CEC.
DIMAPUR, JUN 7 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has dared State’s lone Rajya Sabha member S Phangnon Konyak to resign in protest against BJP mixing religion with politics. Reacting to the BJP MP’s appeals to the people of Nagaland not to mix religion with politics and accusing the saffron party of mixing religion with politics, NPCC president K Therie in a release challenged her that if she stood by her appeal, then she should prove it by resigning in protest against her party doing exactly that. Reminding her that
BJP was targeting minority communities across the country, Therie said her statements exposed that she was ignorant of who was mixing religion with politics, alleging that BJP was targeting Christians, Muslims and minorities similar to Russia attacking Ukraine. “If Ukraine stops defending itself, then it loses its existence. If Russia stops attacking, there will be peace. This is the position of Christians and other minorities before BJP in India,” he emphasised. He mentioned that just two days back a BJP spokesperson had attacked
Prophet Mohammad earning ire from Muslims nations across the world and resulting in summoning of Indian envoys in multiple countries, which was soon followed by the media head of a BJP unit attacking the Prophet. Before joining BJP, the NPCC chief said Phangnon was expected to be fully aware of the persecution of Christians, beginning from Graham Staines and his two sons Philip and Timothy who were burnt alive by Dara Singh, a member of Bajrang Dal, one of the frontals of RSS and BJP. NEW DELHI, JUN 7 (PTI): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said he has sought an appointment with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the killings of Kashmiri Pandits in the valley. The development comes two days after Kejriwal, at the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) “Jan Aakrosh Rally” here, had criticised the BJPled Union government and said he would meet Shah to know about the Centre’s plan to stop the “massacre of Kashmiri Pandits” in the valley. “I have sought time from the Union home minister to discuss the continuing massacre of Kashmiri Pandits,” Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi. The AAP has been criticising the killing of Kashmiri Pandits in the valley and has blamed the Centre for the situation. At the rally on Sunday, Kejriwal had claimed that Kashmiri Pandits are being forced to leave the valley due to the targeted killings of minorities and demanded that the Centre put forth an action plan to stop such incidents. The spate of targeted killings in Kashmir started in May, which included that of Rahul Bhat, a clerk, who was shot dead inside the tehsildar’s office in Budgam district’s Chadoora.

NEW DELHI, JUN 7 (PTI): The ED on Tuesday said Rs 2.85 crore cash and 133 gold coins were seized after raids at the premises of Delhi minister Satyendar Jain and his alleged associates as part of a money laundering probe against them but Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia claimed “only Rs 2.79 lakh was found in Jain’s home”. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) said those raided on Monday “either directly or indirectly assisted (the minister) or participated in the process of money laundering”. The cash and coins were “unexplained” and were kept in a “secret” place, it said in a statement. The agency, however, did not give a breakup of what was seized from which location. Jain, 57, was arrested on May 30 under the criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and is in ED
searches at about 7 premises, including that of a jeweller, in Delhi and some neighbouring locations on Monday. Jain, a minister without portfolio in the Arvind Kejriwal government, is being probed by the federal agency under the PMLA on charges of alleged hawala dealings. BJP leader Kapil Mishra, who was removed from AAP after alleging in 2017 that he had seen Jain giving Rs 2 crore to Kejriwal, took a dig at the AAP chief after the ED recoveries. “Kejriwal had demanded Padma Vibhushan for Jain. Kejriwal is bound to give clean chit to Jain because he is partner in crime,” Mishra alleged. Delhi Congress president Anil Kumar claimed that it is “quite clear” that Jain was involved in a major corruption. “Gradually many more names from the AAP will come up in this graft case. The next person to face the ED will be Manish Sisodia,” he said.
MANSA (PB), JUN 7 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who met the family of slain Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala here on Tuesday to offer his condolences, targeted the Bhagwant Mann led AAP government, saying maintaining peace in the state is beyond their capability. Gandhi drove straight to the singer’s native village Moosa from the Chandigarh airport in the morning and spent nearly 50 minutes with the family. He also paid floral tributes to Moosewala. Shortly after he left Moosewala’s residence after meeting the family, Gandhi slammed the government over the law and order situation. “The law and order of the state has completely broken down. Maintaining peace and tranquillity in Punjab is beyond the capability of the AAP government,” Gandhi tweeted in Hindi. On his visit to Moosewala’s residence, Gandhi said, “It is difficult to describe the grief that the parents of Congress leader Sidhu Moosewala ji are going through”. “It is our duty to get them justice, and we will do

Unexpected lesson
V talk show where the debate was on the favourite topic of Mandir-Masjid, may have passed off like others but this time, when BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma insulted Islam’s most revered prophet Mohammad, the shockwave reverberated beyond India. For adherents of the faith, an insult on their prophet was nothing short of blasphemy with consequent repercusion. In Kanpur, more than 40 people were injured and over 1,500 people charged in connection with the violence that erupted after the TV remark and a tweet from another BJP leader Naveen Jindal who made controversial remarks in his tweet regarding Prophet Muhammad. These triggered a massive row- not only in India but also in countries like Qatar, Kuwait, and Iran, who summoned the Indian envoy regarding the matter. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, or OIC, condemned Nupur Sharma’s remarks, saying it came in a “context of intensifying hatred and abuse towards Islam in India and systematic practices against Muslims”. The BJP reacted to undo the damage done against India’s interest as the Muslim world united in condemning not only the remark but some even demanding apology from the government. The BJP suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled Naveen Jindal from the party. It was ironic that a few Islamic nations forced Modi government to do what 200 million Indian Muslims couldn’t. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said “India categorically rejects OIC Secretariat’s unwarranted and narrow-minded comments. The government of India accords the highest respect to all religions.” If sentiments of Indian Muslims mattered, the likes of Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal would be sacked as and when they make a hateful comment, not after global condemnation. The episode will nevertheless cause heartburn within the TV channels’ anchorpersons who have been having a free run in orchestrating tirades against all other minority religions. The Arab countries are important trade partners for India and it can hardly afford to antagonise them because of the actions or words of what the BJP described as “fringe elements.”Certainly Nupur Sharma is not a fringe element as she is a highly respected upcoming leader in the BJP. Even Naveen Jindal is not an ordinary member but perhaps more expendable then Sharma. The degeneration of healthy debates conducted in an environment of free and fair discussion is a matter of serious concern in the Indian media. Another TV channel appear to have taken up upon itself the task of ‘exposing conversion by Christians missions’. There are around 138 crore Indians of which hardly 2% are Christians whose population is not increasing. A case of suspected “fraudulent” conversion of one or two Dalits and backward castes to Christianity has to be probed by police. However the biased reportage only highlights how the media chooses to do business. Most of the national media has been accused of being biased, arrogant and opinionated. What has been witnessed over the years, has been a significant degeneration of decency in conduct of debates and erosion of credibility as noise and not news fill the studios and India as a whole, continues to suffer.
DailyDevotion The Greatest Source of Power
Whatever you ask in My name, that I will do… —John 14:13 Am I fulfilling this ministry of intercession deep within the hidden recesses of my life? There is no trap nor any danger at all of being deceived or of showing pride in true intercession. It is a hidden ministry that brings forth fruit through which the Father is glorified. Am I allowing my spiritual life to waste away, or am I focused, bringing everything to one central point— the atonement of my Lord? Is Jesus Christ more and more dominating every interest of my life? If the central point, or the most powerful influence, of my life is the atonement of the Lord, then every aspect of my life will bear fruit for Him. However, I must take the time to realize what this central point of power is. Am I willing to give one minute out of every hour to concentrate on it? “If you abide in Me…”— that is, if you continue to act, and think, and work from that central point— “you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you” (John 15:7). Am I abiding? Am I taking the time to abide? What is the greatest source of power in my life? Is it my work, service, and sacrifice for others, or is it my striving to work for God? It should be none of these— what ought to exert the greatest power in my life is the atonement of the Lord. It is not on what we spend the greatest amount of time that molds us the most, but whatever exerts the most power over us. We must make a determination to limit and concentrate our desires and interests on the atonement by the Cross of Christ. “Whatever you ask in My name, that I will do….” The disciple who abides in Jesus is the will of God, and what appears to be his free choices are actually God’s foreordained decrees. Is this mysterious? Does it appear to contradict sound logic or seem totally absurd? Yes, but what a glorious truth it is to a saint of God.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 2022
F
or years Nagas have been told, “The peace process is in the final stage.” But nothing happened -- only repetitive news reports of “deadlock” and “breakdown” of the negotiations. One has to wonder what happens at the Indo-Naga negotiations and Peace Talks. On December 6, 2021, Tokheho Yepthomi, the MP from Nagaland, spoke in the Lok Sabha about the incident at Oting village where innocent villagers were killed by the Indian security forces. Soon after Tokheho’s speech, many Nagas expressed dissatisfaction on social media. “Our elected MP at Lok Sabha! Can’t really say if he is nervous or tongue tied,” commented one. Many others felt that Tokheho is not competent enough to represent the Nagas well. Can not the same be asked about the underground leaders – NSCN-IM and the Working Committee (WC) of Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) – who are negotiating with their Indian counterparts? Are these leaders wise, diplomatic and competent enough to speak, dialogue and negotiate on behalf of the Nagas? I asked a senior NSCN-IM leader what happens at the negotiations and he replied: “Muivah remembers Naga history but keeps repeating. At the Talks, Muivah talks
I
first, but repeats the same. [There are] Very few additional inputs from other members. Kipa kopi, kopi, koilebi dosura manu khan para to eku nakoi” (Even if the other members are told to say something, they don’t say anything).” This senior IM leader also added, “At the negotiations, there is no feeling of progress or moving on. The same topics are discussed again and again. We have become redundant.” The NNGPs, on the other hand, are a collective stooge of R.N. Ravi and the Indian intelligence mechanism. There’s no confidence that they will speak well for the best interest of all the Nagas. We are also told that in the spirit of inclusiveness, no stakeholders should be left out of the final agreement. Yet, members from few tribes are included overwhelmingly, but most Naga tribes and most sections of Naga society are not represented in the negotiations. So, fellow Nagas, are we being represented well at the negotiations? Can those at the Talks articulate, bargain and negotiate well on our behalf ? I, for one, feel they are not competent. Most Nagas blamed the NSCM-IM for keeping the contents of the Framework Agreement to the group, until they did later. Yet, according to a
senior NSCN-IM leader, it was R.N. Ravi who advised Modi not to disclose to the public the contents of the Framework Agreement even though the IM leaders were willing. “R.N. Ravi was too smart for us,” the senior IM leader said. It has backfired on both sides and has added to the distrust in the Indian Government and the NSCN-IM. Fifteen years ago, the word ‘competencies’ was not in the vocabulary of the Naga nationalists. Today, it occurs in every paragraph of Naga nationalist discourse. The NSCN-IM continue to be blamed for not revealing the competencies to the Naga public. The Naga Flag and Constitution seem to have become the cornerstones of Naga nationalism. Meanwhile, outside of the negotiation rooms, allegations and counter allegations are rampant in the Naga society that are further amplified by misinformation and gossip on social media. There are contested positions between the Nagas of Nagaland, represented by the 14 Tribes, and the Nagas in other Indian states (Manipur, Assam, and Arunachal) who are sometimes championed by the Naga Hoho whose officials do not have a mandate of most Nagas in Nagaland and whose legitimacy is in question. It is alleged that even though,
externally, the Sema Hoho and the Ao Senden do not support the Naga Hoho, internally, their representatives are told to stay put within the Naga Hoho. Then there’s the Naga Tribes Council (NTC) which claims to champion the cause of the Nagas of Nagaland with recent statements such as, “No outsiders to decide on destiny of Nagas of Nagaland.” Yet, the NTC are deceiving themselves if they think they can bank on the ENPO’s support for a common Nagaland cause. The ENPO are perceived by some as inconsistent, even undependable, when it comes to common Naga concerns including Naga nationalism. There’s a joke in some circles of Nagaland that the ENPO renege on every agreed decision even before they cross the gate of the house where decisions are taken. Just as many Nagas of Nagaland fear the Nagas outside Nagaland, for reasons substantiated or not, there is also a general feeling in Nagaland that one tribe is too ambitious and aggressive in their aspiration to dominate both Overground and Underground politics in Nagaland, thereby incurring the ill feelings of the other tribes. There is also the feeling that another tribe in Nagaland is clamoring for a social and linguistic domination in the name
The bleak situation of rural Nagaland
have not done the appropriate research necessary to give this topic the weight it deserves but I am compelled to shine light on this topic with what I have. In the recently declared HSLC results, the government schools showed a 36.62 pass percentage. A significant portion of this, I’m sure, came from government schools in town areas. That would make the pass percentage at the rural areas even lower than this. In spite of policy changes and recruitment of competent teachers inducted after fiercely competitive exams, the results continue to be bleak, especially when compared to the private schools. Education in rural Nagaland depends heavily upon the government institutions. This may be because there are no alternatives or because government schools are more affordable. Yet, some remote villages’ situations are half a century behind the urban areas; in my opinion. The stories I hear from these places remind me of the older generation’s timeback when the parents were reluctant to send
A
their children to schools because they considered making them work the farms to be more important. One reason for this is because the students are often the first generation to receive ‘proper’ education. The villagers are simply unaware of the indispensability of education in today’s world. This lack of awareness can be attributed to the fact that the villages are all left with likeminded, unread inhabitants since the well-to -do families relocate to urban areas in search of better opportunities. Their children in turn get settled in the towns without any real sense of attachment to their native villages. When it comes to relatively more advanced villages, the educated villagers play an important role in facilitating education and checking the competency of schools in their villages- some going to the extent of surprise checking the teachers’ attendance. The current system in place for monitoring the competency of government schools is also not enough since the officials tend to overlook schools in remote villages owing to bad connectiv-
n assessment of marine pollution was released by UNEP before the Glasgow Climate Change Conference (COP 26) and the UN Environment Assembly meeting in 2022. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) published a working paper on the most effective policy interventions to reduce single-use plastic waste. Published in October 2021, From Pollution to Solution: A Global Assessment of Marine Litter and Plastic Pollution argues for urgent action to reduce plastic emissions into the environment. Plastics comprise at least 85% of marine litter, making them the largest, most harmful and most persistent component. According to the report, plas-
ity or other excuses. This general neglect of the schools in rural places by any sort of authorities makes the schools lax. The recent shar p criticism of the incumbent government by the Rising People’s Party for the poor performance of government schools is not quite right. It only amounts to politicising the issue without giving any real solution to the problem. If anything, such blame games only distract the public attention from the main underlying problems. While it is not right to blame any one factor for the situation, the employees of the schools have a big role to play for changes to take place. They should consider the heavy responsibility of shaping the future of these underprivileged children. Instead, stories of schools taking advantage of the whole situation are not uncommon. The government schools have a much lighter daily routine compared to private ones and yet, some schools have very limited working days. Some schools in rural areas have more offdays than working days in the year. Some have
absentee teachers that are getting their wages for sitting in the comfort of their homes. I think we should all be concerned about this bleak situation so that we can move the concerned authorities to take proper steps to look into the matter. Education is the basic requirement for reaping the benefits of modern society and we should all be concerned that rural Nagaland is being denied of this so unfairly. I would like to conclude my write up with a message to the incompetent absentee teachers: If you think it is too hard for you to go to the villages to work full time, please submit your resignations so as to make room for the tens of thousands educated unemployed scouring the papers every day for job openings. It is not easy getting a government job these days so please respect your jobs. (I apologize for my criticism of some people and institutions. This write up was composed purely out of concern for rural Nagaland and not to attack anyone) Myingthungo Murry
of a recently constructed common group identity even though not all tribes within that collective are historically members of that group. Sociologically, one might explain these divisions and rivalries as jostling for limited resources and representation. They certainly are shortsighted. The more discerning among the Nagas may recall the words of Anis Nin here: “We do not see the world as it is. We see the world as we are.” In December 2021 and the early part of this year, the killing of the innocent villagers in Oting village by the Indian security forces gave the Nagas a shared experience and united them against a common enemy. It reignited the Nagas’ demand for truth, justice, and the repeal of the infamous Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). Unfortunately, that collective energy seems to have dissipated. It is true that many Nagas, including the NTC, CNTC, ENPO, and Southern Nagas, are in a problem-solving mode. What is lacking though is critical thinking. As Einstein said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” This logic also applies to the Nagas. The NSCN-IM has often touted the idea of
High time for govt to be serious in education sector
P
eople like me whose parents spend more than 70 percent of their income in education would understand the importance of improving Govt education system. The govt must understand the importance of improving Govt schools; when the Govt schools improve and prove better than private schools, more students would enroll and the expenditure that we spend now for education at a private school can be saved for secondary needs and trainings for our wellbeing and holistic development. It is a known fact that when an individual improves, the society improves; every student’s development in every nook and corner of Nagaland is important, especially for the economically marginalised areas for the overall development of Nagaland’s productivity and economy, therefore our state’s education system must be upgraded. Unfortunately, the Govt despite knowing these facts and outcomes seem to be indifferent about the need for developing a sound education system. One of the important factors of underperformance can be found in the statement of the outgoing Principal Director C Shinavas IAS, in response to RPP, clearly stated that most of the SDEOs or DEOs

tic waste emissions into aquatic ecosystems have increased sharply in recent years. By 2040, it predicts that plastic waste emissions into aquatic ecosystems will almost triple. Earth’s final sink, the oceans, receive most of its plastic trash from land. The majority of riverborne plastic entering the ocean comes from just 10 rivers, eight of them in Asia. China’s Yangtze River, contributing 1.5 million metric tonnes of plastic per year, is the major source. Upon reaching the sea, much of the plastic trash remains there. However, once it gets caught in ocean currents, it can be transported all over the globe. Plastic waste breaks down into small particles at sea when it is exposed to sunlight, wind and wave action. These particles are
often smaller than one-fifth of an inch. From Mount Everest, the highest peak, to the Mariana Trench, the deepest trough, microplastics are found throughout the water column. The environmental issue of plastic has become one of the most pressing concerns of our time. The per capita generation of plastic waste in India has almost doubled in the last 5 years. About 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste are generated each year. The adverse effects of plastic pollution on our ecosystems are also linked to air pollution. There is a great deal of plastic waste filling our lakes, rivers and oceans and possibly all water bodies and soils as well. It is estimated that more than 14 million tons of plastic enter the ocean every year.
“Sovereignty lies with the people.” But sovereignty, as we currently understand it, is not possible for the Nagas at this juncture, especially in the current geopolitical positioning of India and China. What creative ways, then, do the Naga representatives and negotiators offer to India? Can we learn from other examples in the world that can help foster a win-win solution in the Naga context? How can we help make a breakthrough in the negotiations? For a start, can senior Naga leaders – Underground and Overground leaders -- such as Muivah, and S.C. Jamir, Khekiye Sema learn to grow old gracefully? Can they give way to younger, well-educated and sophisticated leaders to negotiate for the Nagas? Currently many Nagas are caught up in a whirlpool of internal feuds between this Naga and that Naga, this group against that group. This is the kind of time for Nagas of all geographical areas and ideological camps to keep our heads above the churning waters that are threatening to suck us all in. It’s time to propel ourselves out and away from the whirlpool and stay focused on our ultimate objective. Fr. Abraham Lotha
Plastic debris can cause severe injuries or death to marine species if ingested or entangled. Food safety, human health, coastal tourism and climate change are threatened by plastic pollution. All these indicators point to one thing—our incapacity to respect nature. Every year, plastic kills millions of animals, including birds, fish and other marine organisms. More than 700 species, including endangered species, have been affected by plastics. Seabirds consume plastic in large amounts. Humans, do you think plastic doesn’t harm us? Think again. Microplastics were found in human blood in a recent study article published by scientists. We are not invincible after all. According to the article, scientists have detected microplastic pollution
are on the verge of retirement and there is a lack of sufficient numbers of eligible officers which in other words he means that the current SDEO and DEO are not efficient at all. If they know all these drawbacks why not atleast 50 percent recruitment for the post of SDEO and DEO be recruited directly through NPSC and 50 percent on promotion, so that eligible and efficient officers in education department at district level would also rise which would benefit the citizens and Govt’ as well. The other drawback we all know is that maximum teachers post has been filled through backdoor appointments and the deserving trained teachers are left scopeless without teachers post been advertised. The education department as well as the Govt should feel ashamed of themselves as they have failed to improve education system even after 59 years of attaining our statehood. The politician for their personal greed and political mileage has ruined the education system by appointing their own supporters through backdoor without considering the negative impact on state education system. in human blood for the first time, with almost 80% of people tested showing the tiny particles. There are huge negative effects of plastic waste on our water bodies. Our water bodies are being choked by plastic waste. A study published in April this year found that roughly 1,000 rivers account for over 80% of the plastic waste flowing into the oceans from rivers. Several of the largest rivers in the world have previously been identified as the most prolific carriers of plastic waste, including the Indus, Brahmaputra and the Ganges in India. But this new study offers a more nuanced picture. The study finds that there is a tendency that smaller rivers often carry more plastic than larger rivers in heavily populated areas. PROPHET MOHAMMAD REMARKS:
Good relations to continue with Gulf countries, says Piyush Goyal
(Inset: Piyush Goyal) Commuters drive past posters demanding the arrest of suspended Nupur Sharma following her remarks on Prophet Muhammad, in Ahmedabad. (PTI)
KOCHI, JUN 7 (PTI): Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said the controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad made by ousted BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, has not made any impact on the ruling NDA at the Centre as she was not a government functionary and asserted good relations will continue with the Gulf countries that have reacted sharply to the issue.
He said necessary action has been taken against Sharma, referring to her suspension. The BJP had on Sunday suspended Sharma and expelled its Delhi unit media head Naveen Kumar Jindal as the row over their alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad escalated with protests from some Muslim countries. Amid demonstrations by Muslim groups and the sharp reaction from coun-
tries like Kuwait, Qatar and Iran, the BJP had issued a statement asserting it respects all religions and strongly denounces insults of any religious personality. “I don’t think that this statement was made by any government functionary and therefore it has no impact on the government and necessary action has been taken by the party,” Goyal, Minister for Commerce and Industry told reporters here
when asked about the controversy. He said the Foreign ministry has clarified on the issue. “The Foreign office has come out with a clear clarification on that remark and the BJP has taken the necessary action in this regard. With all these countries, we have a very good relationship and our relations will continue to be very good,” he said. When asked about a social media campaign to boycott Indian products in the wake of the row, the minister said he has not heard of any such thing. “They (Gulf Countries) have only mentioned that such a statement should not be made and accordingly, action has been taken against the person who made the comments. All the Indians living in gulf countries are safe and do not have to worry,” the union minister said. Sharma’s comments, made during a TV debate nearly 10 days ago, and Jindal’s now-deleted tweets sparked a Twitter trend calling for a boycott of Indian products in some countries.
Death threats, targeted hatred: Ex-BJP Receiving death threats on social media, spokesperson Nupur Sharma gets security urge Delhi Police to take note, says Jindal
Nupur Sharma
Suspended Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Nupur Sharma was provided security by the Delhi Police in the wake of death threats she has received over her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammed. The former BJP spokesperson had lodged a
complaint with the Delhi Police on May 27 alleging that she has been receiving death threats and target hatred against her. Based on this complaint, an FIR was registered under sections 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation), 507 (Criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) and 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code at the Special Cell police station against unidentified people. However, during the probe, Sharma lodged another complaint against certain persons regarding promoting enmity.
Naveen Kumar Jindal
Days after being expelled from the BJP over his controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammad, party’s former Delhi media head Naveen Kumar Jindal on Tuesday claimed that he and his family members have been receiving “death threats” on social
media platforms. Jindal had come under attack on social media after his tweet about Prophet Mohammad on June 1. “Me and my family members have been receiving death threats on social media platforms. I would like to request Delhi police to kindly take note of it,” Jindal wrote on Twitter. On Sunday, a communication from Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta to Jindal said his views on social media vitiate communal harmony and are in violation of the party’s fundamental beliefs. He has acted against the party’s policies and ideology, Gupta had said.
Trouble in BJP? Many ‘upset’ over action against Nupur, Jindal
The decision of BJP to suspend national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expel Delhi unit media head Navin Kumar Jindal has not gone down well with many leaders and workers in the state unit, insiders in Delhi
BJP claimed on Monday. “The two office bearers of the party were doing the bidding of the party and they should not have been punished for just crossing the limit in the heat of the moment,” said a senior
functionary of Delhi BJP urging not to be quoted. “We have been sentimentally following BJP’s policy and defending it’s Hindutva plank for years. The question is what is our stake and what happens if
we land in some problem while doing it,” said a district Delhi BJP president. However, Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta claimed that there was no “resentment” over action against Sharma and Jindal.

K Y I V, J U N 7 ( R E UTERS): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Tuesday that Kyiv would not settle for a battlefield stalemate with Russia and that it aimed to regain control of all its territory occupied by Moscow. “We have already lost too many people to simply cede our territory,” he said by video link at an event hosted by FT Live, in which he added that a stalemate was “not an option” for Kyiv. “We have to achieve a full deoccupation of our entire territory,” Zelenskiy said. Kyiv has previously said that Russian forces now occupy about 20% of Ukrainian territory, including swathes of its east and south. “We are not going to humiliate anyone, we are going to respond in kind,” Zelenskiy said, when asked about French President Emmanuel Macron’s call not to “humiliate” Russia in order to keep the door open to a diplomatic solution. Ukraine hopes that Western deliveries of longer-range weaponry, including U.S. HIMARS and Britain’s M270 artillery rocket systems, could help to push Russian troops back.

Despite Johnson’s survival in the vote, his political rivals took a shot at the turmoil within the Conservative Party as the 148 votes against him meant more than 40 percent of the Conservative lawmakers wanted him to go. “The choice is clearer than ever before. Divided Tories propping up Boris Johnson with no plan to tackle the issues you are facing. Or a united Labour Party with a plan to fix the cost of living crisis and restore trust in politics. Labour will get Britain back on track,” tweeted Keir Starmer, leader of the main opposition Labour Party. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said: “Whilst Boris Johnson has clung on today - make no mistake, his reputation is in tatters and his authority is now totally shot.” “Every Conservative MP who cares about integrity and decency must do the right thing, resign the whip and sit as an independent. For the sake of our country, this failing Prime Minister cannot be propped up any longer,” he said.

‘Partygate’ scandal: UK PM Johnson wins confidence vote
LONDON, JUN 7 (IANS): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has won a no-confidence vote among Conservative lawmakers. He will now stay in his job as Prime Minister. Johnson won the support of 211 out of 359 lawmakers, dozens more than the threshold of 180 votes, according to the result announced by Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservative Party’s parliamentary group, the 1922 Committee, Xinhua news agency reported. “I can announce that the parliamentary party does have confidence in the Prime Minister,” Brady said. The confidence vote on Johnson’s leadership was triggered after the number of lawmakers who submitted letters of no-confidence in him to Brady reached 54, or 15 percent of Conservative lawmakers. With Monday’s win, Johnson won’t face another no-confidence vote for a year under the current Conservative Party rules. The Prime Minister has been dogged for months by “partygate” scandals involving him and his staff at Downing Street during Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020 and 2021. He received

‘Top Gun’ heirs sue Paramount over ‘Top Gun: Maverick’
T
h e f a m i ly o f t h e author whose article inspired the 1986 Tom Cruise movie “Top Gun” on Monday sued Paramount Pictures for copyright infringement over this year’s blockbuster sequel “Top Gun: Maverick.” According to a complaint filed in Los Angeles federal court, the Paramount Global unit failed to reacquire the rights to Ehud Yonay’s 1983 article “Top Guns” from the family before releasing the “derivative” sequel. The lawsuit by Shosh Yonay and Yuval Yonay, who live in Israel and are respectively Ehud’s widow and son, seeks unspecified damages, including profits from “Top Gun: Maverick,” and to block distribution of the movie or further sequels. Paramount said in a statement: “These claims are without merit, and we will defend ourselves vigorously.”
“Top Gun: Maverick” is this year’s biggest box office hit, generating $291 million in North America and $548.6 million globally in its first 10 days of release. The high-flying action film directed by Joseph Ko s i n s k i h a s r e c e ive d strong reviews, and has Cruise reprising his role as U.S. Navy test pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. It is already Cruise’s highest-grossing film domestically, surpassing 2005’s “War of the Worlds.” According to Monday’s lawsuit, Paramount obtained exclusive movie rights to “Top Guns,” published in the May 1983 issue of California magazine, before making the 1986 original, and even gave credit. But the Yonays said Paramount deliberately ignored how the copyright reverted to them in January 2020, “thumbing its nose” at federal copyright law. (Reuters)
Ginseng, Fish, Berries, or Caffeine? Listen to the buzz about foods and dietary supplements, and you’ll believe they can do everything from sharpen focus to enhance memory, attention span, and brain function. But do they really work? There’s no denying that as we age, our body ages right along with us. The good news is that you can improve your chances of maintaining a healthy brain if you add “smart” foods and drinks to your diet. Caffeine Can Make You More Alert T h e r e ’s n o m a g i c bullet to boost IQ or make you smarter -- but certain substances, like caffeine, can energize you and help you concentrate. Found i n c o f f e e, c h o c o l a t e, energy drinks, and some medications, caffeine gives you that unmistakable wakeup buzz, though the effects are short-term. And more is often less: Overdo it on caffeine and it can make you jittery and uncomfortable. Sugar Can Enhance Alertness Sugar is your brain’s preferred fuel source -- not table sugar, but glucose, which your body processes from the sugars and carbs you eat. That’s why a glass of OJ or another fruit juice can offer a short-term boost to memory, thinking, and mental ability. Have too much, though, and memory can be impaired -- along with the rest of you. Go easy on the added sugar, as it has been linked to heart disease and other conditions. Eat Breakfast to Fuel
NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 2022
Brain Foods That Help You Concentrate Your Brain Te m p t e d t o s k i p breakfast? Studies have found that eating breakfast may improve short-term memory and attention. Students who eat it tend to perform better than those who don’t. Foods at the top of researchers’ brainfuel list include high-fiber whole grains, dairy, and fruits. Just don’t overeat; researchers also found highcalorie breakfasts appear to hinder concentration. Fish Really is Brain Food A protein source linked to a great brain boost is fish -- rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are key for brain health. These healthy fats have amazing brain power: A diet with higher levels of them has been linked to lower dementia and stroke risks and slower mental decline; plus, they may play a vital role in enhancing memory, especially as we get older. For brain and heart health, eat two servings of fish weekly. Add a Daily Dose of Nuts and Chocolate Nuts and seeds are good sources of the antioxidant vitamin E, which has been linked in some studies to less cognitive decline as you age. Dark chocolate also has other powerful antioxidant properties, and it contains natural stimulants like caffeine, which can enhance focus. Enjoy up to an ounce a day of nuts and dark chocolate to get all the benefits you need with a minimum of excess calories, fat, or sugar. Add Avocados and Whole Grains Every organ in the body

depends on blood flow, especially the heart and brain. A diet high in whole grains and fruits l i k e avo c a d o s can cut the risk of heart disease and lower bad cholesterol. This reduces your risk of plaque buildup and enhances blood f low, offering a simple, tasty way to fire up brain cells. Whole grains, like popcorn and whole wheat, also contribute dietary fiber and vitamin E. Though avocados have fat, it’s the good-for-you, monounsaturated fat that helps with healthy blood flow. Blueberries Are Super Nutritious Research in animals shows that blueberries may help protect the brain from the damage caused by free radicals and may reduce the effects of agerelated conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Studies also show
that diets rich in blueberries improved both the learning and muscle function of aging rats, making them mentally equal to much younger rats. Benefits of a Healthy Diet It may sound trite but it’s true: If your diet lacks essential nutrients, it can hurt your ability to concentrate. Eating too much or too little can also interfere with your focus. A heavy meal may make you feel tired, while too
few calories can result in distracting hunger pangs. Benefit your brain: Strive for a well-balanced diet full of a wide variety of healthy foods. Vitamins, Minerals, and Supplements? Store shelves groan with supplements claiming to boost health. Although many of the reports on the brain-boosting power of supplements like vitamins B, C, E, beta-carotene, and magnesium are promising, a supplement is only useful to
people whose diets are lacking in that specific nutrient. S o m e researchers are cautiously optimistic about ginseng, ginkgo, and vitamin, mineral, and herb combinations and their impact on the brain, but more proof is still needed. Check with your doctor. Get Ready for a Big Day Want to power up your ability to concentrate? Start with a meal of 100% fruit juice, a whole-grain bagel with salmon, and a cup of coffee. In addition to eating a wellbalanced meal, experts also offer this advice: Get a good night’s sleep. Stay hydrated. Exercise to help sharpen thinking. Meditate to clear thinking and relax. Raducanu retires injured from Nottingham event NOTTINGHAM, JUN 7 (REUTERS): U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu retired injured from her opening match at the WTA 250 event in Nottingham on Tuesday, casting doubt over her participation at Wimbledon. Britain’s Raducanu retired while trailing 4-3 in the opening set against Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic, nearly half an hour into the match after she suffered what appeared to be an abdominal or rib injury. The 19-year-old, who has been without a full-time coach since April, shot to stardom last September when, as a qualifier, she won the U.S. Open title, becoming Britain’s first female Grand Slam champion since Virginia Wade in 1977. She has, however, struggled since winning her maiden Grand Slam and was eliminated in the second round of the French Open last month. Raducanu reached the last 16 at Wimbledon in 2021, but will need a quick recovery to compete at this year’s tournament which will be held from June 27 to July 10. The grasscourt major had its ranking points taken away by the men’s ATP and women’s WTA after it opted to exclude players from Russia and Belarus because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a “special operation”.

Maharashtra’s Darshan Pujari clinched the Badminton Boy’s Singles gold, beating S Rithvik Sanjeevi of Tamil Nadu 21-15, 22-20 to lift the spirits in their camp. Earlier, in the Boy’s Kabaddi final, Himachal Pradesh fought back in the second half to beat hosts Haryana in extra-time. The two teams went neck-and-neck in the first half. But the hosts looked like running away with the match when they opened up a 10-point lead, with just under five minutes left for full time. But Himachal began closing the gap, first with a spectacular tackle and then with a super raid. They then packed off the entire Haryana team to level the scores at 34-34 at full time. The Himachal players then kept their cool to catch all the five Haryana raiders while one of their own scored a bonus point to seal the victory.

ZURICH, JUN 7 (REUTERS): Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter and ex-UEFA President Michel Platini are due to appear in a Swiss court on Wednesday facing corr uption charges which triggered their downfall from the summit of global football. Swiss prosecutors accuse the pair, once among the game’s most powerful figures, of unlawfully arranging a payment of two million Swiss francs ($2.08 million) in 2011 from FIFA to Platini. The case meant Blatter ended his 17-year reign as FIFA president in disgrace and torpedoed hopes by former France midfielder Platini of succeeding him. It is one of 25 investigations by the Swiss Office of the Attorney General (OAG) into corruption in football, with some 12 still pending. Following a six-year investigation, the OAG accused Blatter, 86, of “fraud, in the alternative of misappropriation, in the further alternative of criminal mis-

It is an administrative matter, a salary payment that was owed,” said Blatter. “The matter was correctly declared as a salary payment, accounted for accordingly and approved by all the relevant bodies of FIFA.” Platini said: “I approach this hearing with serenity and confidence. I am convinced that justice will be fully and definitively done to me after so many years of wild accusations and slander. We will prove in court that I acted with the utmost honesty, that
the payment of the remaining salary was due to me by FIFA and is perfectly legal.” FIFA’s Ethics Committee banned Blatter and Platini from football in 2015, initially for eight years, although this was later reduced. The OAG said its investigation revealed that Platini worked as a consultant between 1998-2002 and that an annual compensation of 300,000 Swiss francs was contractually agreed. Platini’s invoice had been paid in full but the former France international later demanded further salary payments of two million francs, it said. Platini, who captained France to victory in the 1984 European Championships, was forced to quit UEFA in 2016 after losing his appeal against his ban. He also lost his appeal at the European Court of Human Rights. Nations League: Croatia score late to hold France 1-1 Asian Cup qualifiers: India look
PARIS, JUN 7 (IANS): Substitute Andrej Kramaric converted a late penalty as Croatia denied France three points with a 1-1 draw in their UEFA Nations League Group A1 match in Split, while former European champions Denmark defeated Austria 2-1 and Kazakhstan overcame Slovakia 1-0 in the other matches. Going into the match, both Croatia and France were reeling from defeats in their previous matches and that produced a cagey opening to the game. However, with France coach Didier Deschamps making 10 changes following his team’s loss to Denmark, it was no surprise that it was the hosts who ultimately carved out the first real opportunity. M a t e o K o v a c i c ’s through ball split the French defence, though Ante Budimir’s first touch forced him slightly wide and his eventual shot was straight at goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Les Bleus then grew into the match as the half wore on, and both Moussa Diaby and Aurelien Tchouameni forced saves from home goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic in just under a minute as the

interval approached, said a report on UEFA’s official website. Croatia started brightly after the restart, but it was Les Bleus who opened the scoring with a wellworked team goal. Adrien Rabiot and Wissam Ben Yedder exchanged passes just inside the Croatia half, with the Juventus midfielder outpacing Josip Juranovic down the flank
and expertly picking his spot with a cool left-footed finish. In response, Croatia captain Luka Modric attempted to mark his 150th appearance for the national side with the equaliser, but Maignan was equal to the Real Madrid midfielder’s curling effort. Never theless, just when it appeared that time was running out for Zlatko Dalic’s charges, Jonathan
Clauss -- only just on as a substitute -- sent fellow replacement Kramaric tumbling in the box, and the Hoffenheim forward kept his cool to slot home the resultant spot-kick, sending Maignan the wrong way. There were chances to win it in the closing stages for both teams, but neither Antoine Griezmann nor Luka Sucic were able to find the target. Denmark
made it two wins out of two in the UEFA Nations League as Jens Stryger curled in a classy late winner to earn his side victory in Austria. H av i n g s e c u r e d impressive victories on Matchday 1, both sides looked in a confident mood during an opening period scant on chances in Vienna. That would change when Christoph Baumgartner collected a raking pass from home captain David Alaba and crossed for the unmarked Sasa Kalajdzic in front of goal, the Stuttgart forward going agonisingly close to prodding the opener. Austria would r ue missing that chance when a neat passage of Denmark passing gave Rasmus Kristensen a crossing opportunity from the edge of the penalty area, the ball deflecting into the path of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who swept his side ahead with a ruthless finish. Yussuf Poulsen would have made it two but for a smart close-range save from debutant Patrick Pentz, and Alaba almost scored directly from a corner, Schmeichel tipping his vicious effort over the crossbar.
to begin campaign on winning note KO L K AT A , J U N 7 (IANS): As the ‘City of Joy’ Kolkata gears up to host the Indian team in their first match of the Asian Cup Qualifiers Group D matches, head coach Igor Stimac said that the “passion from the stands will add an extra strength to the players”. India will be squaring off against Cambodia in the first match of the Asian Cup Qualifiers on Wednesday at the VYBK in Kolkata. Speaking at the prematch press conference, Stimac stated, “We are expecting the fans to come in numbers, to support the national team in the best way possible. Our intent is to press from the start, play at high pressure, and at a high intensity. We need to control the game, and I have to say we are ready for that. We have nothing to hide.” Star defender Sandesh Jhingan felt, “Qualifying for the Asian Cup should be a norm for Indian football. The mentality needs to be that India will be at the Asian Cup.”

“I joined the team a bit late. But when I came in, I could gauge the improvement in the squad. The improvement among players individually was there to see. We are motivated. We know the potential of this batch, and we need to start delivering,” he maintained. India begin their campaign against Cambodia at the VYBK on Wednesday (June 8, 2022) at 8.30pm, and the match will be telecast live on the Star Sports Network.
“For me as a coach, it is not important who scores. But it’s important that we score. We need to accept that our recent oppositions - Bahrain, Belarus, and Jordan - were technically better than us. But we had our chances, and failed to capitalise on them,” Igor quipped. “We have young players who are feeling the pressure of being in the National team. We need to push these young players earlier in their career, and need to be patient.”
