concern regarding reports of ‘gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights’ and ‘violations of international humanitarian law’” by Russia in the Ukraine war. “India has abstained on the resolution with regard to suspension of the Russian Federation from the Human Rights Council adopted in the General Assembly today. We do so for reasons of both substance and process,” India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador TS Ti-

rumurti said in the Explanation of Vote after the voting. “Since the inception of the Ukrainian conflict, India has stood for peace, dialogue and diplomacy. We believe that no solution can be arrived at by shedding blood and at the cost of innocent lives. If India has chosen any side, it is the side of peace and it is for an immediate end to violence,” he added. Tirumurti said India continues to remain deeply concerned at the worsening situation and reiterates its call for end to all hostilities.

Since January this year, India has abstained on at least eight occasions on procedural votes and draft resolutions in the UN Security Council, General Assembly and Human Rights Council that deplored Russian aggression against Ukraine. “An important and historic day. Countries from around the globe have voted to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council. Supporters of Pakistani opposition parties celebrate after Supreme Court decision, in Islamabad, Thursday. (AP/PTI)

ISLAMABAD, APR 7 (PTI): In a body blow to Imran Khan, Pakistan's Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously struck down a controversial ruling by the deputy speaker on the rejec-

tion of a no-confidence motion against him and ordered restoration of the National Assembly. In a landmark verdict, a five-member bench headed by Chief Justice Umar

Ata Bandial ruled that the deputy speaker's ruling was “contrary to the Constitution and the law and of no legal effect, and the same are hereby set aside.” “The deputy speaker gave a ruling on April 3. Leave was granted on the noconfidence motion on March 28. The ruling of the speaker is declared unconstitutional,” Justice Bandial said. The court declared the advice by Prime Minister Khan to President Arif Alvi to dissolve the national assembly as “unconstitutional.” The bench comprising Justices Ijazul Ahsan, Mohammad Ali Mazhar Miankhel, Munib Akhtar and Jamal Khan Mandokhel

also restored Prime Minister Khan, Federal Ministers, Ministers of State, Advisers, etc to their respective offices as on April 3. The court ordered the speaker of the lower house to call the session of the national assembly on April 9 at 10 am (local time) to organise a no-confidence vote. It ordered the election of the new prime minister if the no-confidence motion succeeded. The opposition parties need 172 members in the 342-member house to orchestrate the downfall of Prime Minister Khan and already they showed the support of more than the needed strength.

Linda Thomas-Greenfield tweeted. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba tweeted that “Russia’s rights of membership in the UN Human Rights Council has just been suspended. War criminals have no place in UN bodies aimed at protecting human rights. Grateful to all member states which supported the relevant UNGA resolution and chose the right side of history.” Reuters had reported that Russia warned other countries Wednesday that voting “yes” on the removal or abstaining from the vote would be interpreted as an “unfriendly gesture” that will be “taken into account both in the development of bilateral relations and in the work on the issues important for” each country within the U.N. framework. The HRC consists of 47 Member States, elected directly and individually by secret ballot by the majority of the members of the General Assembly.

CM must clarify on Enforcement Directorate summons to 5: RPP DIMAPUR, APR 7 (NPN): Drawing attention to the ruling of Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench, which rejected the petition by five individuals to declare recent summons served on them by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for money laundering as ‘Void, non-operative’ the Rising People’s Party (RPP) has demanded that chief minister Neiphiu Rio clarify on the case. The High Court ruling issued by Justice Nelson Sailo and Justice Arun Dev Choudhary- rejected the appeal filed by the five- Kuovisieo Rio, Mengutuo Rio, Dsesevi Pielie, Vibeilietuo Kets and Mhalelie Rio– who had given their addresses as Sovima village, against the Enforcement Directorate summons, the RPP stated. The five had pleaded before the court after receiving summons from the ED under Section 50 of the Prevention of Mon-

ey Laundering Act, 2002 booked in case no. ECIR/ GWZO/09/2020/488. In a joint statement RPP president Joel Naga and treasurer Vitho Zao pointed out that of the five individuals, at least two of them had Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases pending against them since 2019. RPP said the “biggest shocker” was that chief minister’s personal assistant Kuovisieo Rio was among the five individuals summoned to appear before ED in Guwahati. Apart from the personal assistant, RPP said that the other four were also believed to be close confidants of the chief minister. Therefore, RPP said it was incumbent upon chief minister Neiphiu Rio to clear the air regarding the money laundering case. RPP asserted that this was “nothing less” than a direct indictment of the chief minister himself.

NSF, ENSF urge State govt to settle SSA, RMSA issue

KOHIMA, APR 7 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) have reminded the State government on streamlining and regularisation of SSA and RMSA teachers of 2010 and 2013 batches, stating that the latter’s assurance of resolving the matter within 18 months would expire on April 17, which should not be extended. In a joint representation to the chief secretary, NSF president Kegwayhun Tep and ENSF president Chingmak Chang recalled that the government had in its official notification on October 18,

2020 assured to settle the matter within 18 months. Asserting that the assurance period would expire on April 17, they declared that no extension would be entertained whatsoever to resolve the long pending issue. They warned the government that the failure of the government to keep its assurance would compel the federations to take up befitting actions in the interest of the teaching community of the State. NSF and ENSF appealed to the government to bring the issue to a logical conclusion within the stipulated time.

Further RPP claimed that the ED summon letter issued on February 24 of this year, opined that the deafening silence of the chief minister and Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on the matter till now was a story in itself. RPP therefore, demanded that Rio publicly address the issue by way of press conference in order to put all speculations at rest. Meanwhile, urging ED to pursue the case to its logical conclusion as per the available facts, the RPP leaders claimed that the summon was a first in the State’s history even as the harried general public reeling under rampant corruption, was finally beginning to believe that the long arm of the law would finally prevail. RPP further reasserted that the charge of ED being used as a “political tool” by the government at the Centre, should not surface in this case.

On his part, DC excise (Hq) assured that the exceptional seizures made due to personal initiatives would be duly acknowledged and given befitting commendation.
