(NPN): Three books compiled by State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) was launched by advisor of School Education & SCERT, Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome at a programme held at the conference hall of SCERT, here on Wednesday.

The books were Indigenous Toys & Games of Nagaland, Nagaland ECCE Curriculum Handbook-Theoretical Principles & Thematic Framework (Part A) and Nagaland ECCE Curriculum Handbook - Theme - based on learning experiences - Teachers manual (Part B).

In his address, Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, said Naga society trying to adapt with change in a system where the focus was on the individuality although Nagas had primarily been a society where community was paramount and individual was secondary.

He observed that such a major shift in the thinking process and practice was a huge stress for a young society like the Nagas.

He observed that the sudden change from the old educational system to new putting emphasis on emotional and social literacy was above and beyond the simple 3 Rs (Reading, Writing, Arithmetic).

Yhome said the change seemed too rapid for a society where the first person to graduate was not even 100 years ago in 1924.

However, he said the adaptability nature present in the Nagas was also the strength of the people which was liberating.

“Our adaptability is what also makes us vulnerable but it also what makes us free people,” Yhome said.

He observed that there were also some conflicts while trying to adapt to government laws and policies, however, he hoped that SCERT would come up with innovative ways to cater to such issues and bring in solutions.

Lauding the handbook, Yhome said, “We have come out with not just a vision document but also with a research policy specifically on ECCE which would go a long way in moulding the children.”

While appreciating the efforts put into the work, Yhome congratulated the team for bringing out the documents and also hoped that the team would continue to grow. He lauded the collaborating partners Azim Premji University saying the trend of education was getting better integrated into the educational system especially through such innovative institutions.

Ea rlier, leader of North Eastern States & Jammu & Kashmir, Azim Premji University, Bengalore, Bijoy Shankar Das, shared his thoughts on the Nagaland ECCE curriculum.

He said the rest of the State in the country were learning and taking references from Nagaland’s ECCE curriculum. He lauded the curriculum calling it a trailblazer which had inspired many other states to follow the system followed by Nagaland while preparing the curriculum such as inviting people from diverse background as test subjects.

He expressed hope that the collaboration between Nagaland and Azim Premji University would continue to grow stronger.

The launching programme was chaired by senior lecturer, ECCE cell head, Veketulu Veyie while director, SCERT, Keviraleü

Kerhüo delivered the welcome address.

Mother, son killed in mob attack on ambulance

IMPHAL, JUN 7 ( AGENCIES): A Meitei woman married to a Kuki man, her son and a relative are feared dead after an ambulance was set on fire by a mob in Imphal on Sunday, relatives and residents of their village told The Indian Express. The ambulance was taking the child to the hospital, and was being escorted by police personnel. The incident took place in Imphal West’s Iroisemba area, under the jurisdiction of Lamphel police station. A senior officer from the station said the vehicle was charred around 7 pm Sunday. “All we could recover were some bones from inside the vehicle,” he said. An FIR, which also includes sections pertaining to murder, was registered by police at the station that night. The incident took place more than a month after clashes between Meiteis and Kukis first began on May 3

in the state, which has been on edge ever since. According to residents of Kangchup Chingkhok village in Kangpokpi district, the three are Meena Hangsing, her son Tomshing – who they said was below age 7 – and Meena’s relative Lydia Lourembam.

The Kangchup area has several Kuki villages and is on Kangpokpi district’s border with Imphal West, close to the Meitei village of Phayeng. The area has been seeing heavy exchange of fire in the second wave of violence across the state since May 27. According to

Gin Hangsing, a relative of the victims and a resident of the village, they were heading to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences after Tomshing was injured with a bullet injury to the head when firing took place in the area on Sunday.

“The women and children of our village had been staying at an Assam Rifles outpost nearby for the past month while the men have been doing village defence work. On Sunday, Tomshing was shot in the head from afar – it could have been a stray bullet or aimed at him, we don’t know,” he

said. This led to panic in the family, and they took a decision to move him to RIMS in Imphal West.

Another relative, Champi Hangsing, said the family drew confidence from the fact that both Meena and Lydia were Meitei. “They thought that since they are Metiei, nothing will happen to them as they travel through the valley. They left in three vehicles – the ambulance, and two vehicles with Manipur police personnel who escorted them,” he said. An Assam Rifles spokesperson, while denying that Assam Rifles were a part of the effort to move them to the hospital, stated that the two women and the child were escorted by Manipur police personnel.

A male nurse, who was accompanying the three persons in the ambulance, said: “I got a call from the proprietor of our company to pick up a patient from the Assam

Rifles post at Kangchup. I, along with a driver, rushed to evacuate the patient. We were told they were Meiteis.

As soon as we reached there, we picked up two ladies and a boy who had a head injury. His condition was serious. On our way to the hospital, we were escorted by the district police.”

He said they had already been stopped a few times before they reached Iroisemba. “When we reached Iroisemba, we were stopped by a mob and totally surrounded. The driver and I were pulled out of the vehicle and taken to a club nearby. The police were outnumbered. They did not fire to disperse the crowd. It was around 6.30 pm. We were kept at a club for about two hours,” he said. Imphal West SP Ibomcha Singh did not respond to calls and messages seeking a comment.

Kuki women detained after protest outside H.M.’s residence

NEW DELHI, JUNE 7 (IANS): A group of women belonging to Manipur’s Kuki tribal community staged a protest outside the residence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Wednesday against the ethnic violence in the northeastern state that has so far killed more than 100 people.

The Union Minister had recently visited Manipur from May 29 to June 1.

According to information, the women gathered outside Shah’s residence at around 9 a.m.

However, all the protesters were instructed to leave by the Delhi Police, as staging any kind of protest is not allowed in the area.

A Delhi Police official said that upon receiving information about the protest, they dispatched a team to pacify the protesters. The police initially informed the protesters that assembling

outside Shah’s house was illegal.

“All the protesters were detained and brought to Jantar Mantar. We informed them that they can stage their protest there if they wanted,” the police said.

Manipur has witnessed unprecedented ethnic violence since May 3 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in 11 hill districts by the All Tribal

Students’ Union of Manipur to protest the Meitei community’s demand for a Scheduled Tribe status.

It was preceded by tension over the eviction of Kuki villagers by the state government from reserve forest land, which had led to a series of smaller agitations in four districts. The violence has also injured more than 320 others so far.

57 arms, 318 ammunitions, 5 bombs recovered in 24 hours in Manipur

868 ARMS AND 11,518 AMMUNITION RECOVERED TILL DATE

Correspondent

IMPHAL, JUN 7: Security forces in Manipur recovered 57 arms, 318 ammunition and five bombs in the last 24 hours even as combing operations to recover weapons and ammunition snatched from the state police and security forces commenced on Wednesday, official sources said.

GUWAHATI, JUN 7 (PTI):

A goods train derailed in Assam’s Kamrup district on Wednesday but no injuries were reported, a railway official said. The incident took place near Boko when 20 wagons of the coal-laden train jumped the tracks at Singra near Boko, he said.

The derailed wagons were at the centre of the train which had a total of 60 wagons, the official said.

The train was bringing coal to Tetelia in Kamrup Metropolitan district from

Asansol in West Bengal. The cause of the derailment was yet to be ascertained and senior railway and police officials were camping at the spot, he said.

Four passenger trains in the Rangia-Lumding section were cancelled but express trains were not affected as rail traffic in the section was lean and confined mostly to goods trains, the official said. Restoration work has begun and the plying of trains is expected to resume soon, the official added.

Including the latest recovery, a total of 868 arms and 11,518 ammunition have been recovered till date, said Kuldiep Singh, security advisor to the Manipur government, in a statement.

The arms and ammunition were recovered from Porompat police station of Imphal East and Sugnu police station of Kakching district, he added.

Official sources said that security forces in the

state under the aegis of the Headquarters 3 Corps commenced mass combing operations to recover arms and ammunition snatched from the state police as well as armories of state security forces during the initial stage of the ethnic violence that erupted in the state on May 3 last.

One such operation was by a combined force of state police, Assam Rifles and CRPF at Khoken vil-

lage of Kangpoki and its adjacent Sangaithel village of Imphal West district today morning. The security forces raided the houses in these villages. There were no reports of recovery of arms and ammunition and also picking up any suspect in the operation.

The combing operations were conducted under the aegis of the Headquarters 3 Corp and the

executive magistrates were detailed at the places on the request from the Army side. The sources said that the combing operations will be conducted across the sensitive areas in the hills and valley to recover illegal arms and ammunition in the possessions of the villagers as well as snatched from the police and state security forces. According to the sources, around 2000 weapons and over five lakh ammunition were looted by unruly mobs from armouries and police stations and outposts both in hills and valley district since violence broke out in the state on May 3 evening. On the other hand, Manipur chief secretary Dr Vineet Joshi, in a statement on Wednesday, said that the combing operations will also be conducted in five hill districts of

Churachandpur, Pherzawl, Tengnoupal, Chandel and Kamjong.

The chief secretary was reacting to reports widely circulated in social media that combing operations will be conducted only in the valley districts.

This was not correct, he said, adding that executive magistrates were deputed based on a request received from the Army authorities in Manipur regarding requirement of executive magistrates in the five valley districts and Kangpokpi for combing operations.

The physical presence of the executive magistrates was required in the places where AFSPA has been lifted and the same has been lifted from many police stations falling in these six districts, he clarified.

“The Army request -

ed executive magistrates only for these districts as executive magistrate are not required for conduct of combing operations in other districts where AFSPA is in force,” the chief secretary said.

Further, to dispel misunderstanding among the public, the deputy commissioners of Churachandpur, Pherzawl, Tengnoupal, Chandel and Kamjong districts have also been advised to detail executive magistrates for the operations by security formations even though AFSPA is in force in these districts, the statement added.

On the other hand, the security advisor stated that curfew relaxation has been made for 12 hours in five valley districts and 10 hours and eight hours in neighboring hill districts. There is no curfew in six other hill districts.

APHLC bid to unite tribes hits roadblock BJP played T-20 to win Tripura polls: Chief Minister

DIMAPUR, JUN 7 (NPN):

In a bid to banish the enmity between the Karbis and Khasi-Pnars created by third forces among these two tribes, the All Party Hill Leader’s Conference (APHLC) held a peace meeting in the market of Mukoilum in West Karbi Anglong district where headmen from both Karbi and Khasi-Pnar, stated that all of them wanted peace and free coming and going among these tribes people.

A press release by president of APHLC, J I Kathar stated that a large number of people from both KhasiPnar and Karbi attended the peace meeting in spite of the economic blockade imposed by a section of Karbi people.

The two parties further stated that among both the two tribes, there were a few “bad character persons” who did not observe social norms and were involved in anti-social activities beyond the control of the headmen, and that they always tried to over-rule the instructions of the Headmen of the villages.

In the meeting, Some Karbi speakers accused the Khasi-Pnars of not accepting government development

schemes like LP. School and ICDS schemes and not voting during elections in West Karbi Anglong. The speakers from Khasi-Pnar stated that LP.School was given with only one teacher and ICDS was given without necessary materials. They however did not disclose why they did not vote in West Karbi Anglong.

The press release further stated that a person who did not want peace, threatened the APHLC that if it brought peace among the Karbis and Khasi and the lift the economic blockade against the Khasi-Pnars, and then if any criminal act occurred, then the APHLC from polling station committees, to constituency committee of Amreng cc committee and Central APHLC would be targeted by attackers.

The APHLC stated that this is a clear indication that if APHLC or any body restores peace among the Khasi-Pnars and the Karbis, some agents who are against unity of tribes people will commit murder and arsons.

APHLC alleged these agents provocateurs are aiming to capture the Amreng

Council Constituency in Council elections in which non-tribal and foreigners and Bangasenas are becoming majority and they want to keep the tribal people in poverty, confused and disunited,The Peace Committee of that place had, in a peace meeting some days ago banned free movement and friendly mixing among Karbis and Khasi-Pnars by imposing economic blockade against the Khasi-Pnars.

APHLC opined the, will cause hatred of one tribe against the other and the enmity between KhasiPnars and Karbis will remain forever. It said these tribes people will face defeat.in any electionwhich is against the aim and objective of the APHLC.

The APHLC said that it cannot bring peace for now because the Peace Committee which does not want peace, has been constituted by elected Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and the government of Assam but it will continue to work to bring peace and unity among the Karbis and Khasi-Pnars and other tribes people.

AGARTALA, JUN 7

(PTI): BJP played T-20 to retain Tripura in the 2023 Assembly polls and it was possible under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and party chief J P Nadda, Chief Minister Manik Saha said.

The 2024 Lok Sabha polls will not be like playing the T-20 variant of cricket and party workers will work hard to ensure an easy victory for the BJP in the northeastern state, Saha said at a traders’ body conference on Tuesday.

The BJP overcame the challenges posed by a LeftCongress alliance and the fight put up by Tipra Motha , which contested the Assembly polls for the first time, in February.

In the 2023 state polls, the BJP won 32 seats in the state’s 60-member Assembly while its ally- Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) got one seat. The newbie party Tipra Motha, founded by former royal Pradyot Kishore Mankiya Debbarma, garnered 13 seats while the Left-Congress combine got 14 seats.

Sikkim CM seeks biz corridor connecting Nepal

GANGTOK, JUN 7 (PTI):

Chief Minister Prem Singh

Tamang on Tuesday urged the Centre to build an international business corridor in West Sikkim for improved connectivity with Nepal, which, he claimed, will boost development in the Himalayan state.

Tamang also said the central government appeared to be keen to consider the project, keeping in view its benefits to the

people of Sikkim and added that a decision would be taken in due course.

“I had proposed an international business corridor connecting Uttarey with Chewabhanjya in West Sikkim to Nepal at the NITI Aayog meeting in the national capital recently and also took up the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said at a function after inaugurating a forest house at Chewabhanjyang.

The Sikkim chief minister also said that if the two countries get connected with the international business corridor in Chewabhanjyang, it will speed up development in the state, creating opportunities for the local people in diverse sectors such as economic, social, cultural, tourism and education.

“Both India and Nepal have friendly relations and the proposed business

the saffron party had bagged 36 seats and its partner won eight seats. The BJP had wrested the state from the CPI(M) in a surprise win in 2018.

Addressing the confer-

ence, Saha said, “We (BJP) had to play a T-20 match in the last Assembly election and won it. This was possible only because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and national president JP Nadda and our guardian Amit Shah.

“This time, we don’t want to play a T20 match to win the Lok Sabha elections.”

PM Modi likely to visit Egypt this month

NEW DELHI, JUN

7 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Egypt this month, around six months after the two countries elevated their ties to the level of strategic partnership, diplomatic sources said on Wednesday.

It will be Modi’s first visit to the African nation after he became prime minister in 2014.

The sources said the visit is set to boost cooperation in a number of areas including trade, investment, agriculture and defence.

There has been no official announcement on PM Modi’s trip to Egypt. India is keen to further expand ties with Egypt, a key player in the politics of both the Arab world as well as Africa. It is also seen as a major gateway to markets in Africa and Europe.

The ties between the two countries were elevated

to the level of strategic partnership during Egyptian President Abdeh Fattah El-Sisi’s visit to India in January.

In the talks, the two leaders decided to take the volume of bilateral trade to USD 12 billion in the next five years from around USD 7 billion at present. The 68-year-old influential Arab leader graced the Republic Day celebrations as the chief guest on January 26.

The sources said Modi’s visit to Egypt is set to be alongside his trip to the US. Egypt has been traditionally one of India’s most important trading partners in the African continent.

More than 450 Indian companies are registered in Egypt, of which around 50 are active in various sectors with a combined investment exceeding USD 3 billion, according to official data.

Speaking to media persons here on Wednesday, the founder of KIIT & KISS, Achyuta Samanta said: “We can’t reduce the sorrow of the family members of those who died in the train accident, but we will try our level best to support them.”

“We will try to support the victims’ families by offering a job to one member from each family at KIIT and KISS as per their eligibility, and provide free education to their kids at KIIT and KISS as per their eligibility from standard one up to higher level. KOLKATA, JUN 7 (PTI):

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday hit out at the BJP-ruled Centre alleging that there were attempts to suppress the cause of the train accident in Odisha. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was engaged to probe into the June 2 triple train crash but pieces of evidence have already been removed, Banerjee claimed. She was speaking at a programme organised by the West Bengal government to hand over cheques and appointment letters to the next of kin of those residents of the state who were killed or injured in the accident that occurred in Balasore district of Odisha. The chief minister said that 103 people of West Bengal were killed in the incident and 86 of them could be identified so far. She also said that 172

suffered major injuries while 635 had minor injuries.

“There are attempts to suppress the reason behind the Balasore accident, while Delhi has sent the CBI to 1416 municipalities,” Banerjee said.

The central probe agency on Wednesday conducted raids at multiple locations in West Bengal in connection with its probe into alleged irregularities in recruitment in civic bodies.

“You (BJP government) will not be able to suppress the truth. I want the truth to come out. Family members of those injured and killed in the accident also want to know the reason for the accident. The culprit behind it must face strict punishment,” she said.

“I have visited Odisha twice in the last few days to provide support to injured train accident victims recuperating in various hospitals in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar,” she added.

The Coromandel Express crashed into a stationary goods train, derailing most of its coaches at 7 pm on June 2. A few of those toppled over the last few coaches of the Bengaluru-Howrah Express which was passing by at the same time.

In all, 288 people died in the accident and more than 1,200 were injured.

Resetting priorities

Alot has been stated, both past and present and will continue to be so in future, to gloss over the economic vision for Nagaland, through the aberrated vision of the policy planners who have perfected the copy-paste culture. There is no harm in dreaming but to claim success without serious analysis is premature. The state’s expected progress has been grounded due to various reasons and unless these are remedied or rectified, all claims would be like day dreaming. Today, institutionalized corruption has become so deep rooted in the government that people have become insensitive to it. The vicious circle gets enlarged during elections which has to be the starting point where the battle against corruption has to be fought. Politicians unfortunately, suffer from tunnel vision – the object to accumulate money to fight election and be in power to recoup money and again fight elections. Besides politicians are government servants, especially the bureaucrats, who are considered to be among the richest in India. This culture has also seen the rapid rise of a noveau riche, facilitated by lack of governance, where rules are no longer vogue but vague and archaic. on the other hand, the silence of the “religious leaders” of the church against the moral and ethical downslide is deafening. The tenets of any religion is to guide the followers by inculcating moral and ethical values in each. This is a major contribution for achieving social peace and administration of justice. When moral and ethical values or spiritual values, become extinct, then it only encourages individual corruption. This then enlarges into institutionalized corruption, which is the most dangerous and deadly condition in society. Institutionalized corruption has become so deep rooted in society and government that people have become insensitive to it. This has led to a condition known as “asociality”- a moral abyss that leads ordinary people to believe that there is a price tag for everything as those in power have purchased the mandate to serve personal, family or community needs above all. Added to it is the rise of gun culture, which is responsible for creating fear and mayhem. The consequences are due to the misdirected pride in the past because the narrative suits and justifies missteps has today led to negative consequences. People across states have no time to dwell in the past as they consider the present more relevant for the future. In this context, it is regrettable that all the hollow claims of ‘progress and development’ has reduced Nagaland to the status as ’underperforming’ with an overall score of 34.41, and at the bottom fourth out of 36 states and Union Territories in India. Nagaland’s score was below the All-India average of 44.48 and comparison with the previous year’s index. Also in 2021, according to NITI Aayog’s North Eastern Region District Sustainable Development Goal Index, Nagaland performed poorly in six goals including no poverty, good health and well-being and infrastructure. There is a time and place for gala entertainment and impressive event management. Now is the time to set things right and this can only be done by resetting priorities.

DailyDevotion The Greatest Source of Power

Whatever you ask in My name, that I will do…

—John 14:13

Am I fulfilling this ministry of intercession deep within the hidden recesses of my life? There is no trap nor any danger at all of being deceived or of showing pride in true intercession. It is a hidden ministry that brings forth fruit through which the Father is glorified. Am I allowing my spiritual life to waste away, or am I focused, bringing everything to one central point— the atonement of my Lord? Is Jesus Christ more and more dominating every interest of my life? If the central point, or the most powerful influence, of my life is the atonement of the Lord, then every aspect of my life will bear fruit for Him.

However, I must take the time to realize what this central point of power is. Am I willing to give one minute out of every hour to concentrate on it? “If you abide in Me…”— that is, if you continue to act, and think, and work from that central point— “you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you” (John 15:7). Am I abiding? Am I taking the time to abide? What is the greatest source of power in my life? Is it my work, service, and sacrifice for others, or is it my striving to work for God? It should be none of these— what ought to exert the greatest power in my life is the atonement of the Lord. It is not on what we spend the greatest amount of time that molds us the most, but whatever exerts the most power over us. We must make a determination to limit and concentrate our desires and interests on the atonement by the Cross of Christ.

“Whatever you ask in My name, that I will do….” The disciple who abides in Jesus is the will of God, and what appears to be his free choices are actually God’s foreordained decrees. Is this mysterious? Does it appear to contradict sound logic or seem totally absurd? Yes, but what a glorious truth it is to a saint of God.

India’s Act East Policy and its Influence on North Eastern Region

Soon after India got liberated from British domination, the newly independent India paid no attention to the North Eastern part of India. Not only did it neglect the North Eastern part of its territory but it also paid no heed to South East Asian countries. Therefore, it was during the time Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao in the year 1991, mooted the “Look East Policy” to build a better relationship with South East Asia countries. Thus, the North Eastern part of India became indispensable as this region can make inroads into the South East Asian countries.

Initially, the focus of the Look East Policy was on the economic domain to attract more investment and technology from East Asia countries. But later on, under prime minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee, it became strategic as well. In the year 2011, after 20 years of its implementation, a debate arose that India should not only Look East but also Act East. In the meantime, the Secretary of the United States Hillary Clinton during her visit to India suggested that Look East must become Act East as India must engage more with the East. The United States wanted to encourage India’s role in the South East Asia region to become an important player to balance China. But prime minister Manmohan Singh at that time did not respond to such suggestions.

However, no sooner did the government change in 2014 and the Modi government came to power, the new government changed Look East Policy to Act East Policy. This Act East Policy accelerated the focus on the North Eastern part of India as the gateway to penetrating South East Asian countries, especially the Eastern Indian Ocean, that is, the Bay of Bengal. The Bay of Bengal’s security and economy became an important strategic goal for India under its new Act East Policy. Under the Act East Policy initiative, the Indian Navy and Coast Guard also started visiting the Western Pacific to increase maritime cooperation with Japan and Vietnam.

Through this policy, India has taken a proactive approach to initiating intense exchanges with South Asia, South East Asia and Australia. Moreover, India also set up a full-fledged mission to ASEAN with an ambassador.

It also sent a delegation to Shangri-La Dialogue 2016 and in the same 2018 Dialogue, Modi gave a stunning speech. This was the first time that an Indian prime minister gave a speech at an Asian Security Conference Shangri-La.

One of the most important parts of India’s Act East Policy is to put the entire Indo-Pacific at the top of its priorities. Indo-Pacific simply means the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. In Act East Policy, India has continued to consider ASEAN as the important cornerstone and its developmental regionalism as an important player just like the Look East Policy. However, in the previous Look East Policy, India had extended the scope to geographical terms. The older Look East Policy focused on East Asia only but the new Act East Policy focuses on South Asia, South East Asia, Bangladesh, Myanmar and also the Pacific Island countries et al.

As a part of the Act East Policy, India is focusing on Bangladesh and Myanmar by making good bilateral relations through trade and investment. India has increased engagement with the North Eastern region as a part of this policy. India’s Act East Policy focuses on the security dimension of the Indian Ocean. India in the past shied away from taking responsibility but now India has agreed to take security responsibility in the Eastern Indian Ocean and the protection of global commons. Global commons mean resources that are shared by the entire globe. For instance, space, cyberspace, Oceans etc. India respects the idea of a free and open global commons therefore India respected the UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) settlement of its maritime boundaries with Bangladesh but China did not respect the UNCLOS ruling on the South China Sea in 2016. India condemned this

behaviour. India has shown a willingness to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific along with the United States and other countries. It is not only the South East Asian countries that are in trouble by China but India has also faced the same Chinese interference. China has developed the maritime Silk Road Initiative to create assets in India’s naval territory. Chinese submarines had made a port to Sri Lanka and Pakistan. And because China interferes with Indian territory through a “String of Pearls” initiative, India also interferes in East Asia and South East Asia as a reprisal move.

India’s Act East Policy is also complimentary to its United States policy. It has come with a stronger engagement with the United States. Since the 1990s after the end of the cold war, India and the United States’ relationship has improved dramatically. A nuclear deal with the United States was signed during Manmohan’s Singh government in 2008. However, it was the Modi government that increased its engagement with the United States. Modi had a summit meeting with Obama in 2014 just four months after coming to power. Obama also visited India in 2015 to meet Modi. Both countries have signed many important deals such as COMCASA (Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement), LEMOA (Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement), BECA (Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement), MISTA (Maritime Information Sharing Technical Agreement) etc. that have made India get access to the same security system that NATO gets. Most importantly both countries now have greater geopolitical convergence. During the cold war, India was closer to USSR and the United States was anti-USSR but now both India and the United States have a common enemy and threat to China. Earlier, the United States wanted to focus more on Western Pacific and India, on the other hand, wanted to focus on the Indian Ocean but now they have an Indo-Pacific policy where together with Australia and Japan will focus on Indo-

Environmental Activism as career to bring solution from pollution

Is there any one amongst us who wants polluted surroundings? No, certainly not but we are the one who are environmental criminals and making our planet more dirty and polluted. What is the deepest point in the ocean, the Mariana trench, and the highest mountain peak in the world, Mt. Everest, have in common? And the answer is , despite being among the planet’s most remote and inaccessible environments, they both contain tiny pieces of plastic from human activities miles away. It is clear now that without urgent action, the estimated 11 million metric tons of plastic currently entering the ocean annually will triple in the next twenty years.

We should know that some 11 million tonnes of plastic waste flow annually into the oceans. This may triple by 2040. More than 800 marine and coastal species are affected by this pollution through ingestion, entanglement, and other dangers. A shift to a circular economy can reduce the volume of plastics entering oceans by over 80 per cent by 2040; reduce virgin plastic production by 55 per cent; save governments US$70 billion by 2040; reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 per cent; and create 700,000 additional jobs – mainly in the global south.

More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled. An estimated 19-23 million tonnes end up in lakes, rivers and seas annually. That is approximately the weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers all together. Microplastics – tiny plastic particles up to 5mm in diameter – find their way into food, water and air. It is estimated that each person on the planet consumes more than 50,000 plastic particles per year –and many more if inhalation is considered.

This underscores the importance of this year’s World Environment Day (WED) in mobilizing transformative action from every corner of the world.

Pacific.

One important thing to note is that India’s commitment to Eastern Region has increased under its Act East Policy but India has deep reservations regarding direct military involvement in the South China Sea to help the United States and South East Asia countries to balance China. Of course, this may change shortly. However, the United States has realised India’s importance in choking Malacca Strait from the Western side. India has also signed a defence cooperation agreement with the United States.

India’s focus on Act East Policy and renewed relations with the United States has come with the foreign policy imperative of improving its focus on the Indian Ocean region. Traditionally India’s focus has been more on land but now it is focusing on the “blue economy” and “Indian Ocean”. India Navy’s focus on submarine forces and indigenization, that is, domestic manufacturing of naval equipment has conspicuously increased. India also organized the “International Fleet Review” in 2016 to increase naval cooperation with other countries. India has also launched SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative to develop a blue economy and increase maritime cooperation and collective actions in the Indian Ocean region. India has launched this to counter China’s maritime Silk Road Initiative. Indian maritime security strategy released in 2015 confirmed that India focuses on the South-West, Eastern Indian Ocean including the East coast of Africa, the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea etc. India is also focusing on developing capabilities for small island countries like Mauritius and Seychelles so that they don’t fall prey to China. It is trying to become a net security provider in the Indian Ocean and mostly focuses on the Eastern Indian Ocean. As a part of the Act East Policy India focuses on the Bay of Bengal region, developing connectivity with the Bay of Bengal. India has launched

the BIMSTEC (Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan, and Nepal as members) initiative to improve connectivity and economic relations with the Bay of Bengal countries. India has invested in creating Asian trilateral highways that connect Moreh in Manipur to Mae Sot in Thailand via Myanmar. India has also started to focus on improving maritime connectivity with ASEAN. India is also willing to sign an agreement such as the coastal shipping agreement and express interest in improving ports to increase its trade with Bangladesh and beyond and improve connectivity in the North Eastern region. India has also launched the Sagarmala project to improve its ports. Ports are the drivers of the new-age economy. Hence, India despite having a coastline of 7516.6 km has under-developed ports.

India’s Eastern ports are in much worse conditions than Western ports. India is now privatizing its ports to develop them. It also organized a global maritime summit in 2016 along with South Korea which is a global leader in shipbuilding.

Instead of China, India now prefers Japan to invest in infrastructure in a strategically sensitive region such as the North Eastern region and Andaman and Nicobar Island. It is also supporting Japan’s Bay of Bengal industrial growth-belt initiative to help Bangladesh become a hub in the Bay of Bengal. Enhancing maritime security cooperation with Countries in the Bay of Bengal, India has started to focus on increasing naval cooperation with different countries in the Bay of Bengal. India signed a strategic partnership with Singapore in 2015 and revised its defence cooperation agreement for bilateral exercises.

India also conducts Milan exercises since 1995 when more than 40 countries joined India with their navies in a multilateral naval exercise. The United States joined Milan for the first time in 2022. India has also started conducting joint navy patrolling and naval exercises with the Indonesian Navy and Royal Thai Navy. India has

also signed a white shipping agreement with Thailand.

As a part of the Act East Policy, irrespective of which kind of political system is in power, India has matured to maintain a friendly relationship with Myanmar. This is unlike the past when India broke a relationship with the military junta. India and Myanmar Navy now conduct joint bilateral exercises, patrolling India’s Ocean and Myanmar is the only third country after Thailand and Indonesia to sign such an agreement with India. India has also launched a makein-India initiative to boost India’s defence exports to the Bay of Bengal region. It has started shipping naval equipment to the South East Asian militaries. India has increased naval security cooperation with countries like Vietnam and Bangladesh beyond the South East Asian setup.

Earlier, India was wary of inviting or joining any naval exercises, patrolling etc. due to its own NAM (Non-Alignment Movement) and also due to the fear of angering China. But now India has accepted its responsibility in the Indian Ocean and it is undertaking a joint exercise with extra-regional powers such as the United States, Japan and Australia under the QUAD initiative. Malabar exercise is done along with QUAD. India is also expanding its naval reach by doing exercises not just in the Indian Ocean but also Western Pacific. India also participated in the US-led exercise in the region such as the multilateral Cobra Gold exercise in Thailand in 2015 and The Rim of the Pacific Ocean Exercise in 2016.

In summation, India has understood the perils and consequences of China’s String of Pearl policy and its Belt and Road Initiative. Hence, India is now taking the role of net security provider thoughtfully by engaging North Eastern Region through connectivity, trade, security and multicooperation.

Wake up to reality

WED is observed around the world on 5th June and it is one of the most popular events observed all over the world. This year’s focus is to beat plastic pollution. The year 1972 marked a turning point in the development of international environmental politics: the first major conference on environmental issues, convened under the auspices of the United Nations, was held from June 5-16 in Stockholm (Sweden). Later that year, on 15 December, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/2994 (XXVII)) designating June 5 as WED.

It is not too easy to leave without plastic as it has become part and parcel of life but what we need to do is to limit its usage and look for an alternative. One of the career options may be in the field of environmental activism. Aspirants from any academic background may become activists but it is always important if they are equally academically qualified to understand the terms related to environment.

There are courses like Graduation/ Post Graduation in Environmental Sciences. Many colleges and universities offer these courses in India and abroad. There are similar courses like life sciences, ecology, etc.

There are voluntary organizations like youth clubs, nongovernmental organisations engaged in different environmental activities. The activity includes from pure research to activism and generating awareness amongst the public. There are opportunities in media houses and law too as environmental laws are equally important which brings opportunity for lawyers to become environmental activists. One must have effective communication and a positive personality to be successful in this field. Let us bring solutions and not pollution and choose environmental activism as our career choice by bringing solutions and innovations by us or inspire others to do the same.

The liberty that we enjoy in our land did not just come about to us on a whim. Blood and tears were shed by our ancestors during the 1950s and the early 1960s. Article 371A did not just come about to us on a silver platter. There were people;our predecessors who had to go through thick and thin to buy us what we have today, i.e our freedom. Thanks to their honorable sacrifices we have the luxury of enjoying statehood. But despite the fact that our state has been sheltered by the Art 371A, it is unfortunate that jeopardy is knocking on our door.

The blessings that have been bestowed upon us by our ancestors;by our God is withering away. As the book of Proverbs 29:2 states when the wicked rule, the people groan. And this verse plays significance in what is happening in our state today.

One of the many and the most serious issues that we have in Nagaland which our leaders have failed to contain is the problem of illegal immigrants or the ILP.

For now, we the locals are the head and they are the tail;we are the landowners and they are the tenants;we are the lenders and they are the borrowers. But unfortunately and as terrifying as it may sound, this will all change unless we address the elephant in the room.

This issue that we have had for a while is gradually being noticed thanks to the various news channels in Nagaland and also thanks to the social media platforms.

May I kindly remind us that what we are facing right now and what we are going to face in the days to come has already happened in the past.

Let me take you to the times

of the old Testament, the times of Jeremiah who is known as the weeping prophet. The prophet Jeremiah preached a message of doom and destruction to the stiff necked people of israel for 40 years, who refused to turn away from their wicked ways.

Jeremiah proclaimed God’s impending Judgement on them because of their immorality. But the children of Israel would not heed his words. They labeled Jeremiah as someone insane who had lost his mind.

Fast forward into the 40 years and then we see the mighty Babylonian empire which God had raised against Israel as his instrument for chastening his people. After the siege of Jerusalem the children of Israel are taken as captives by the Babylonians. As they are taken by the enemy nation, the Israelites look back and they weep bitterly;they recall what the prophet Jeremiah said to them all those years.

This story of the old testament plays a key role in under-

standing what looms over our head and what is to come if we continue in our path of living in Greed, Luxury and Corruption. Surely God’s chastening will come upon us if we continue to walk in this same manner. The public and especially the ones in authorities need to open their eyes. If we love our children, our culture, our tradition;we would do the right thing. The book of Proverbs 27:12 says A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions.

Now to get to the crux of the matter, the ILP which is maintained only in name must be kept in check strictly.

Least, it becomes too late and our tribal people fades from our own land; least they i.e illegal immigrants become the head and we the tail; least we become the tenants and they the landowner; least they become the lender and we the borrower.

BJP’s false promises to students

Sir, The people of Nagaland must be reminded time and again through your esteem news daily about the election manifesto of the BJP during the 14th NLA Election 2023, lest we forget all the tall and juicy promises made. Social media ‘status’ causes tension in Kolhapur

KOLHAPUR, JUN 7 (PTI): Wielding lathis, police in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur on Wednesday dispersed hundreds of protesters after they pelted stones during a demonstration against the alleged use of Tipu Sultan’s image along with an objectionable audio message as social media “status” by a few locals, an official said. In view of the protest, internet services have been suspended till Thursday in Kolhapur, a senior police official said.

While personnel from the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) have been deployed in the city in western Maharashtra, police have sought more cops from Satara, he said.

Prohibitory orders have been issued till June 19 banning the assembly of five or more persons, he said. As

there was a possibility that a few groups of protesters may go to the neighbouring Sangli district, police are put on alert and prohibitory orders may be issued.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis wondered if there was any link between the statement of a leader from the Opposition camp about likely riots and the subsequent “glorifi-

cation” of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan.

Tension rose in Kolhapur city on Tuesday after two men allegedly put 18thcentury Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan’s image along with an offensive audio message as their social media “status”.

A group of right-wing activists demanded action against both men following which a case was registered,

said another official. Police registered another FIR on Tuesday evening and arrested seven persons after more protests were held, the official said.

The protesters again hit the streets on Wednesday.

“Some organisations had called for a Kolhapur bandh and their members gathered at Shivaji Chowk today. After their demonstration ended, the crowd began to disperse but some miscreants started throwing stones, forcing police to use force against these people to disperse them,” said Kolhapur Superintendent of Police Mahendra Pandit. He said force and teargas were used only after stones were hurled at houses and vehicles damaged.

Kolhapur district collector Rahul Rekhawar said the situation is under control

and additional police forces have been brought in. Dipak Kesarkar, the district guardian minister, said that action has been taken against those who had used Tipu Sultan’s image along with an objectionable audio message. Fadnavis told reporters that statements of some politicians fearing a riot-like situation in the state and a section of people of a particular community glorifying Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan cannot be a mere coincidence. His reaction came against the backdrop of some youths displaying photos of 17th Century Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in a procession in Ahmednagar and tension in Kolhapur city. He said the acts of glorifying Mughal emperor Aurangzeb will not be tolerated in Maharashtra.

DMK rebukes Governor Ravi for ‘doing politics’ on Stalin’s tour

CHENNAI, JUNE 7 (PTI): The

DMK on Wednesday slammed Governor R N Ravi for “doing politics” in “Ooty’s cool weather” by convening a meet of vice-chancellors in the hill town when the whole nation was “shell-shocked” by the June 2 Odisha train accident.

Days ago, the whole nation grappled with the accident as the fatalities were on the rise, DMK organ ‘Murasoli’ said. However, Ravi was not worried about anything, and as per his plan, travelled on June 3 to “cool, cool” Ooty and “did politics” by convening a meet of VCs, the ruling party’s Tamil daily alleged.

Ravi, who announced that he

was scheduled to talk about the Centre’s new education policy with the VCs, “revealed his immaturity by speaking on attracting investments, which had nothing to do with those who helmed varsities”. Murasoli also used the term “half-boiled” -- hinting at a half-baked idea -- to denounce Ravi’s comment.

The Governor had reportedly remarked that investors would ‘not come’ merely because they were asked to do so. It was seen as a veiled attack on Stalin, who recently undertook a trip to Singapore and Japan to woo investors.

Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu on Tuesday said Ravi

belittled Stalin’s tour. The CM was striving to improve the state’s economy by bringing in foreign investments, the minister had said.

Citing PM Modi’s foreign tour to attract investments, the DMK newspaper said it was of the view that Ravi could have gone through such reportage.

The daily claimed Ravi enjoyed life in the sprawling Raj Bhavan premises, both in Chennai and in Ooty. Quoting a Tamil proverb, it alleged Ravi not only did not do any work, but also prevented others -Vice Chancellors -- from doing their job. It slammed Ravi for not “realising” several times what he spoke

and did, and in pursuit of publicity interfering in matters that had nothing to do with his position. Though Ravi could have spoken to the VCs hoping that they would accept his views, they would have realised the Governor’s folly, the daily said.

Ravi is yet to learn his lesson and “we are reminding him, this is Tamil Nadu, helmed by Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, and his (Ravi’s) jugglery will not succeed here.”

BJP state vice-president Narayanan Thirupathy condemned Murasoli for using “filthy” language against Ravi. He said the write-up has lowered the stature of both the DMK and the party-led regime.

NOIDA, JUN 7 (PTI):

BJP president J P Nadda on Wednesday held a “tiffin meeting” here with party workers of western Uttar Pradesh, the party’s Noida Mahanagar president Manoj Gupta said on Wednesday.

“The ‘tiffin meeting’ is part of the BJP’s mega public outreach programme with an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections,” he said.

The BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit chief Bhupendra Chaudhary, vicepresident Pankaj Singh, Gautam Buddh Nagar MP Mahesh Sharma and Rajya Sabha MP Surendra Nagar among others attended the meeting, Gupta said.

Asked about the preparation for the 2024 general elections, Nadda told reporters, “We are always prepared. We have several initiatives... So 2024 or other elections before that, we are prepared.”

“We had called our old party workers also. Such tiffin meetings will be held from time to time. This is becoming part of the BJP’s working style. It brings in a culture of unity and camaraderie among party workers,” he said.

LUCKNOW JUN 7 (PTI):

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday announced his party’s support to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal against the Centre’s ordinance on control of services in the national capital after a meeting here with the AAP convener.

Kejriwal was accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann at the meeting.

“We had discussion with SP chief Akhilesh Yadav...we thank him as he has assured his party’s support when the ordinance comes in the Rajya Sabha,” Kejriwal told a joint press conference after the meeting.

The SP chief termed the ordinance as “anti-democratic” and said, “My party is with you (Kejriwal).”

Kejriwal said that if the ordinance gets defeated in the Rajya Sabha, it will send a “strong message” be-

fore the 2024 parliamentary elections.

“If all the anti-BJP parties unite and get the ordinance defeated in the Rajya Sabha, where the BJP is not in majority, it will be a semifinal of the next year’s elections and send a strong message to the country,” Kejriwal said.

The Aam Aadmi Party chief has been reaching out to leaders of non-BJP parties to garner their support against the ordinance so that the Centre’s bid to replace it through a Bill is defeated when it is brought in Parliament.

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have so far extended their support to the AAP.

Blue, space economy to add value in India’s growth: Jitendra

MAINPURI (UP), JUN 7

(PTI): Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Wednesday said lesser explored areas like ocean resources and space will do value addition in the future economy of the country.

Addressing a meeting here, he said one of the hallmarks of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approach towards the economy has been that he has reinforced and strengthened the existing pillars of the economy by imposing a check on pilferage or malpractice and reduced a load of avoidable restrictions and regulations for ease of business.

The prime minister also introduced new dimensions to the Indian economy, which hardly received any attention from previous governments even though these were important, the Minister of State for Personnel said. “Blue economy and space economy are among some of the

Singh said, 353 out of the total 385 foreign satellites have been launched during the last 9 years and USD 174 million have been earned.

new concepts introduced in last nine years by the prime minister,” he said.

If India has to compete globally, it will have to stand up to global parameters and the value addition to the future economy of the country will also come from lesser explored areas like ocean resources and space, the minister was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the Personnel Ministry.

“It is also a matter of pride that even though our space journey started several years after countries like USA and Soviet Union, but today, these countries are using our technology

He said that while India as the fastest-growing economy, overtook the United Kingdom, it has also generated revenue by launching their satellites.

“As far as the Blue economy is concerned, Prime Minister Modi spoke about the Deep Sea Mission in his Independence Day address because he wants to make people aware of the Blue wealth that lies hidden under the seabed,” Singh said while addressing “Vyapar Sammelan” (Industry and traders’ meet) as a part of the month-long campaign to commemorate the nine years of the Modi government.

and US launch strategic trade dialogue

WASHINGTON, JUN 7

(PTI): Ahead of the historic US visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two countries have launched a strategic trade dialogue here during which officials reviewed the ongoing cooperation in multilateral export control regimes and agreed to share the best practices to further the bilateral ties. At the inaugural India-US Strategic Trade Dialogue (IUSSTD), the Indian delegation was led by Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra. The US delegation was co-led by Alan Estevez, Under Secretary for Industry and Security in the US Department of Commerce and Ambassador Victoria Nuland, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs in the US Department of State.

15 people killed in collision between truck and bus in Bangladesh

DHAKA, JUN 7 (PTI):

At least 15 construction workers were killed and several others injured when a truck collided with a pick-up van in Bangladesh on Wednesday, officials said. The accident occurred at around 5.30 am when the sand-laden truck hit the pick-up van carrying around 25-30 construction workers in the Kutubpur area in Sylhet’s Dakshin Surma

flight will take all passengers and crew onward to San Francisco on June 8. It said that a team from the airline is also on board the flight to provide any support that the passengers and staff at GDX may require.

The ferry flight is carrying essentials in addition to a sufficient amount of food to cater to all passengers on the onward flight scheduled from Magadan (GDX) to San Francisco (SFO), Air India said.

MOSCOW/ WASHINGTON, JUN 7 (PTI): The 232 people on board the Air India flight from Delhi to San Francisco that made an emergency landing on Tuesday are stranded in Russia’s remote town of Magadan, a key transit point of the infamous Gulag which was a major instrument of political repression during the Stalin era in the erstwhile Soviet Union.

Flight AI173 was diverted to Magadan on Tuesday due to an engine glitch in the Boeing 777-200 LR aircraft. The flight, carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew, landed safely, the Tata Group-owned private carrier said in a statement Tuesday evening. An airport

spokesperson told Russia’s official Sputnik news agency that all the passengers are foreign citizens, including over 40 US nationals and several citizens of Canada.

“Specialists concluded after inspecting the airplane that another aircraft was needed to continue the flight. The travellers were cleared through customs and brought to hotels in Magadan and provided with food,” the state-owned TASS news agency reported. Air India on Wednesday sent a ferry flight - carrying food and other essentials - to Magadan to fly the passengers bound for San Francisco, who are currently stranded. The airline said the aircraft operating the ferry

USsays‘closelymonitoring’situationafterAir IndiaflightmakesemergencylandinginRussia

The United States has said that it is “closely monitoring” the situation after a San Francisco-bound Air India flight made an emergency landing in Russia’s remote town of Magadan.

Flight AI173 from Delhi was diverted to Magadan in Russia on Tuesday owing to an engine glitch, the Tata Group-owned private carrier said in a statement last evening. The Boeing 777200 LR aircraft, carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew, landed safely. “We are aware of a US-bound flight that had to make an emergency landing in Russia and are continuing to monitor that situation closely. I’m

not able to confirm how many US citizens were aboard the flight at this time,” State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters at his daily news conference on Tuesday. “It was a flight that was bound for the US. So, it is, of course, likely that there are American citizens on board. There’s public reporting from Air India that they are sending – what my understanding is – a replacement aircraft to the destination to have the passengers carry on for their route, but I would defer to the air carrier to speak to anything further on this,” Patel said in response to a question.

India has one of the best airfare regimes: Akasa Air CEO

ISTANBUL, JUN 7 (PTI): India has one of the best airfare regimes in the world, but there should not be “gouging” in terms of ticket prices to take advantage of a particular situation, according to Akasa Air CEO Vinay Dube. His comments come against the backdrop of concerns about a steep rise in airfares in certain routes amid capacity reduction due to the Go First crisis and higher travel demand, and the government asking airlines to devise a mechanism to ensure a reasonable ticket

pricing system. India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, and domestic air traffic is recovering strongly after the coronavirus pandemic.

Dube, also the founder of Akasa Air, said the civil aviation ministry has an excellent point in terms of gouging and is not talking about average fares in India, like equivalent to USD 45 or 50, which is too high.

“Gouging is what the government is worried about... as an airline fraternity, we should ensure that there is no gouging,” Dube

told PTI in an interview in Istanbul. He explained that gouging is a particular term used when anybody really jacks up the price of something to take advantage of a particular micro-environmental situation.

“Gouging is just not a good thing. The airfares on an average in India are the most customer friendly in the world in any kind of sizeable aviation economy. The Indian consumer average has one of the best airfare regimes you can find anywhere in the world. That is a fact and we have some of

INVITATION

the cheapest average fares anywhere in the world,” he pointed out. On June 5, the ministry asked airlines to devise a mechanism to ensure reasonable airfares amid a surge in air ticket prices, particularly on certain routes that were earlier served by Go First. Airlines have been asked to self-monitor airfares on routes that have seen a considerable rise in ticket prices and also to devise a mechanism to ensure reasonable pricing within the high RBD (Reservation Booking Designators).

LONDON, JUN 7 (IANS):

Russia may be plotting to blow up the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, Ukraine has warned, after explosions at a major dam and hydroelectric plant caused mass flooding in the Kherson region and sparked a humanitarian disaster, the media reported. A series of blasts caused the critical Nova Kahkovka dam, which lies

along the Dnieper river in Russian-held territory, to partially collapse and led to ‘catastrophic’ floods, the Daily Mail reported. Around 24 towns were overrun by the deluge with shocking footage from the region showing how entire villages were submerged and houses swept away, Daily Mail reported.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ac -

“This crime carries enormous threats and will have dire consequences for people’s lives and the environment,” Zelensky said, while US security officials warned there would likely be ‘many deaths’ as a result of the floods.

The Kremlin, meanwhile, has blamed Ukraine for the blast, claiming it was a ploy by Kyiv to distract from the launch of a major counteroffensive Moscow says is faltering, the Daily Mail reported.

But Zelensky’s top security official Oleksiy Danilov dismissed the allegations and said that Putin’s next step may be to attack the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which lies just 80miles up the river from Kakhovka and relies on water from the dam to cool its reactors, the Daily Mail reported. Danilov told the Times that since Putin has entered ‘a fundamentally new stage of Russian aggression’ and that since he ‘had the hydroelectric power plant blown up on his demand, he is ready to do anything’.

I SLAMABAD, JUN 7 (PTI): Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan has been booked under the anti-terrorism law in the murder case of a supreme court lawyer, his party said on Wednesday.

Advocate Abdul Razzaq Shar was killed on Tuesday in a drive-by shooting in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, while on his way to the provincial high court when targeted by the unknown assailants.

Shar’s son Siraj Ahmad registered a case on Tuesday, accusing in his FIR that his father was killed at the behest of Khan, the Pakistan

Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party chairman. The PTI party, in a WhatsApp message, confirmed that Khan, 70, was named in the FIR lodged at the Shaheed Jamil Kakar police station of the city. According to the copy of the FIR shared by the party, the complainant told police that his father had registered a case against Khan and he was receiving threats. “I name Imran Khan in the FIR because threats were being given to my father at his behest,” he said. Shar had filed a constitutional petition against Khan and former deputy speaker Qasim Suri in the Balochistan HC for proceedings under Article 6 that pertained to high treason for illegally dissolving the National Assembly in April 2022 after the joint opposition had moved a notrust motion against the PTI government.

Dua Lipa wins bid to dismiss lawsuit over ‘Levitating’ copyright

Singer-songwriter Dua

Lipa and music label Warner Records have won their bid to dismiss a copyright lawsuit against hit song ‘Levitating’. The songstress and label were being sued by Artikal who claimed the 2020 tuned copies the core hook from their song titled ‘Live Your Life’, which was released in 2017, reports ‘Mirror.co.uk’.

Artikal Sound System had put forward a theory that claimed that one of Dua Lipa’s co-writers had previously worked with a woman who was allegedly taught guitar by the brother-in-law of one band member.

According to Billboard, in her ruling, U.S. District Judge Sunshine S. Sykes appeared to be unimpressed as she said:

“These attenuated links, which bear little connection to either of the two musical

BTS’ Suga and Halsey drop dark music video for ‘Lilith’ rework

compositions at issue here. Also do not suggest a reasonable likelihood that defendants actually encountered plaintiffs’ song.”

Judge Sykes also found that there was no sign that anyone involved in the creation of Dua’s top hit had had “access” to the little-known song from the reggae group.

However, the band claimed that their song was “widely available” and insisted that one of the writers for ‘Levitating’ must have heard it, adding that it had been played at concerts and had sold “several hundred” physical CDs and that it

was available on some streaming platforms. As per ‘Mirror.co.uk’, Judge Sykes found that the claims were “too generic or too insubstantial” to sustain a lawsuit. She added: “Plaintiffs’ failure to specify how frequently they performed ‘Live Your Life’ publicly during the specified period, where these performances took place, and the size of the venues and/or audiences precludes the Court from finding that Plaintiffs’ live performances of the song plausibly contributed to its saturation of markets in which Defendants would have encountered it”.

WhatsApp rolling out feature that let users send HD photos on iOS, Android beta

Meta-owned messaging platform

WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature on Android and iOS beta, which allows users to send high-definition (HD) photos. With this new feature, users can choose a better quality when sending photos, but the option only appears when the users select a large size picture, reports WABetaInfo.

While this feature preserves image dimensions, minor compression will still be applied to the picture, thus sending photos in their original quality is not possible.

The default option will always be ‘Standard quality’ for all pictures, therefore, users have to select the HD option every time they want to send a photo with better quality. A new tag will be added to the

Switch to Plant-Based Diet Could Boost Prostate Cancer Survival

Following a healthy plantbased diet after a diagnosis of prostate cancer may help prevent the disease from progressing or recurring, a new study suggests.

Men who ate a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains had a 52% lower risk of cancer progressing and a 53% lower risk of recurrence, compared with men who had the lowest amounts of plants in their diet, the researchers found.

“Progressing to advanced

reducing morbidity for the most common cancer facing U.S. men, in addition to having other positive health benefits for preventing other chronic diseases,” Liu said.

A plant-based diet may have these benefits because fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants and antiinflammatory components, as well as dietary fiber that improve glucose control and reduce inflammation, she explained.

Also, this diet reduces potentially harmful exposures to animal-based foods, such as hormones and heterocyclic amines created during high-temperature cooking, which have been linked to prostate cancer in particular, Liu said.

Diets high in animal protein may also increase insulin resistance, while milk and dairy may increase levels of the growth factor IGF1, which has been associated with prostate cancer risk, she noted.

For the study, Liu and her colleagues used data from a study that collected information on more than 2,000 men with prostate cancer. Over a median of seven years, the researchers found that men who reported diets that included the highest amounts of plants had a lower risk of both progression and recurrence, compared with men who ate the lowest amounts of plants. This association did not vary by age, walking pace or the severity of cancer.

“Post-diagnostic healthful plant-based diets, including vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains, may be associated with a reduction in risk of

disease is one of many pivotal concerns among patients with prostate cancer, their family and caregivers and their physicians,” said lead researcher Vivian Liu, a clinical research coordinator at the Osher Center for Integrative Health at the University of California, San Francisco.

“These findings may directly inform clinical care by providing diet recommendations as guidance for managing their health and

prostate cancer progression and recurrence, adding to a list of other numerous health benefits including a reduction in diabetes, cardiovascular disease and overall mortality,” Liu said.

The findings are to be presented Thursday at the 2023 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Genitourinary Cancers Symposium, in San Francisco. Findings presented at medical meetings are considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Dr. Anthony D’Amico, chief of the Division of Genitourinary Radiation Oncology at the DanaFarber Cancer Institute in Boston, cautioned that although the findings are promising, they can’t prove that a plant-based diet caused prostate cancer outcomes to improve, only that there is an association between the two.

Having said that, he added that there is biological evidence that plant-based diets are healthier and can boost the immune system.

“So, there’s a biological rationale for it being able to slow the risk of progression of any cancer as a result of immune surveillance,” D’Amico said. “The other side is people who eat a plant-based diet also tend to exercise, which has been shown to boost the immune system.”

A healthy lifestyle also lowers the risk of cancer recurrence and progression because patients can tolerate treatments better, are more likely to get the full treatment and are more likely to be compliant, D’Amico said.

message bubble when sending a photo with the ‘high quality’ option to inform the recipient that the photo is sent using this feature.

The ability to send HD photos is currently rolling out to some beta testers on Android and iOS, and is expected to roll out to more users over the coming weeks, the report said. In January this year, it was reported that the messaging platform was working on this feature for Android beta, and meanwhile, in the following month, another report mentioned that this feature was in the works for iOS beta. Halsey and BTS’ Suga have dropped a reworked version of the former’s 2021 song ‘Lilith’. Originally released as part of Halsey’s fourth album “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power’, the new version of ‘Lilith’ is being shared to celebrate the long-awaited launch of Diablo 4.

‘Lilith’ by Halsey and Suga dropped alongside a dark music video, set in the world of the Diablo series. It follows Halsey as faces a fark force in an eerielooking chapel, before she turns into the titular Lilith at the end.

Meanwhile, Suga shows up to perform his newly added verse in a dark, shadowy room: “Step out of the moment that’s been trappin’ you in / All this negativity of hatred and insanity / Don’t dwell on the past / It’s time to make a change.”

Last December, Halsey took to The Game Awards 2022 to perform ‘Lilith’ and reveal the June 6 release date for Diablo 4.

“As soon as Diablo 4 was announced, I knew I wanted to be a part of the lead-up and launch. Lilith is such an influence on my own art and has informed so many characteristics of my alter-ego,” they explained. “My family has

spent many hours together in Sanctuary over the years, so I am here as a fan and as a collaborator.”

“It’s so exciting to collaborate with a talented artist who has loved Diablo for years, and we can’t wait to continue working with Halsey to support the launch of Diablo 4,” said Rod Fergusson, general manager of Diablo at Blizzard Entertainment.

“Together, Halsey and the Diablo team

will bring the relentless battle between angels and demons to the world as they invite everyone to join us in the most brutal vision of Sanctuary to date.”

Speaking to NME, associate game director Joe Piepiora said that Diablo 4 will be darker and “more dangerous” than any other game in the long-running franchise.

Earlier this year, Halsey joined Suga onstage to perform ‘Suga’s

Interlude’, from Halsey’s third studio album ‘Manic’, for the first time. The pair had previously collaborated on BTS hit ‘Boy Wiv Luv’.

Following the performance, Halsey took to Instagram to reflect on their friendship and why they call him “twin”.

“We have the same smile, we have a lot of shared interests, sometimes we even have the same haircut. But I mostly say it because we seem strangely (and sometimes wordlessly) connected on a creative wavelength,” they wrote.

“He is a true artist, which I’ve always known. But seeing the energy, versatility, creativity and courageous darkness of the show blew me away,” they continued. Suga then responded to the post, writing: “Twin??? I’m a year older than you.” (NME)

AICF cancels Canadian Exposure Tour

CHENNAI, JUN 7

(IANS): The All India Chess Federation (AICF) has cancelled the Indian team’s Canadian Exposure Tour for lack of player confirmations, it is learnt.

“The cancellation has nothing to do with the government. Seven out of 12 Indian chess players expressed their inability to be part of the tour and hence, the programme was scrapped,” a person in the know of developments told IANS.

“Five male players and two female players had confirmed participation out of the 12,” the person added.

He refuted the view that the Central government declined to fund the tour programme as AICF is flush with funds.

Queried as to why the chance is not given to the next ranked players, the person said the government funds the tour expensesvisa/flight/boarding and lodging- for only the top six players of each category and the rules does not allow onboarding lower ranked players even though it is an exposure tour.

The AICF organises exposure tours for the top chess players falling under different categories - open, women, and age group

players. During the exposure tours, the Indian players participate in a couple of chess tournaments to gain experience as well as FIDE rating points.

However, the AICF officials were not available to answer why the Federation, which is flush with money, could not send the players to Canada on its own.

“The AICF could have used the government funds to take a full contingent at a later date. The Federation could have used its money in taking the players who had given their consent for the Canadian tour and participate in the Canadian Open Chess Championship,” a senior chess player told IANS preferring anonymity.

On May 15, the AICF had sought the confirmations from 12 players about the availability/non-availability for the Canadian

ZDFA holds executive meeting

DIMAPUR, JUN 7 (NPN): Zunheboto District Football Association (ZDFA) held its executive meeting on June 6 at Khonheche Café, Zunheboto.

In a press release, ZDFA through its media cell informed that in the meeting, the executives members discussed the upcoming Hezukhu Memorial Trophy which is scheduled to be held in the month of September this year as well as plan to go ahead with the 35+ League starting from June 10. The association further decided to open the office for club membership renewal as well as new club registration as only registered clubs under ZDFA will be allowed to participate in the Memorial trophy. The clubs can also contact the association at 9615397855 or 8787617005 for any queries with regard to registration as well as for the memorial trophy.

Women’s Champions Trophy:

DIMAPUR, JUN 7 (NPN):

Saramati Warriors defeated Tiyi Strikers by 10 wickets on the third day of the ongoing second edition of the Women’s Cricket Champions Trophy at Nagaland Cricket Stadium and Sovima Cricket Ground.

Playing the first match at Nagaland Cricket Stadium, Saramati Warriors won the toss chose to field first and restricted Tiyi Strikers to 118 runs on the scoreboard. For the Strikers their captain Sentilemla carried her elite form and scored another brilliant 88 runs but she could not find much support from the other end and her team had to settle for 118 runs to defend against a formidable opponent. Watinaro and Sariba picked up 2 wickets each while Nitu took 1 wicket for the Warriors.

The opening duo of

Exposure Tour by May 19.

But on June 6, the AICF informed the players that the Canada trip had been cancelled due to unavoidable reasons.

It is learnt there are players who confirmed their participation for the Canadian tour foregoing or changing their earlier plans of playing in other foreign tournaments.

Now that the Canadian tour scheduled for 22-30 July is cancelled, those players are not in a position to play in those tournaments.

Indian players go overseas to play in chess tournaments to gain experience, rating points and win prize money.

“Only with the prize money we meet all our expenses within and outside India. Many players borrow money for their foreign tours and settle their debt with the prize money,” a

chess Grandmaster told IANS preferring anonymity.

To the question as to why the chess players beg/ borrow to play in the overseas tournament instead of playing in the domestic circuit, several chess masters told IANS that the Indian tournaments has a varied player mix - very lowly-rated to moderately high rated.

And the number of players who play in a tournament is very high owing to allowing donor entries.

“So, the quality of the players is not uniform. The risk - chances of gaining or losing rating points - is not commensurate with the reward - the prize money.

A rated player will lose rating players heavily if he loses to a lowly rated player while he will not gain much by winning against a lowly rated player,” chess masters told IANS. The other issue is that tournament organisers invite foreign Grandmasters enough to satisfy the title norm standards, so Indian players do not get to play against stronger foreign players, they added.

The tournament organisers are interested only in high volume tournaments and not high valued ones.

Real Madrid to sign Bellingham from Dortmund for 103 mn euros

MADRID, JUN 7 (AGENCIES): Borussia

Dortmund have agreed to sell England midfielder Jude Bellingham to Spanish giants Real Madrid for an initial fee of 103 million euros ($110.4 million), the Bundesliga club said in a statement on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old, who had been linked with several major European clubs, joined Dortmund from Birmingham City in 2020 for 25 million pounds ($31.17 million), becoming the most expensive 17-year-old in football history.

He quickly became a regular in the Dortmund side, anchoring the midfield and starting over 30 Bundesliga games in each of his last two seasons in Germany.

England manager Gareth Southga te made Bellingham the youngest English player to represent his country at a major tournament during the 2021 European Championship. He soon became a permanent fixture in England’s midfield, playing all five games at the World Cup in Qatar where they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by France.

relien Tchouameni as the club look to build for the future and replace longtime stalwarts Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. Dortmund said the variable transfer compensation paid by Real will be a maximum of around 30% of the initial fee based on Bellingham’s performances and the Spanish club’s success on the pitch.

2Chinesesnookerplayersgiven lifetimebansformatch-fixing

LONDON, JUN 7 (IANS): Chinese snooker players Liang Wenbo and Li Hang have been handed lifetime bans as part of a group of 10 players penalized by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) for match-fixing.

The WPBSA issued a statement on Tuesday, confirming that the ten players were charged with match-fixing offenses. It pronounced lifetime bans for Liang and Li and imposed significant suspensions for the other players involved, reports Xinhua. Liang, 36, who has been under suspension from snooker events since last October, was found guilty of manipulating or participating in the manipulation of five snooker matches, attempting to persuade or enable other players to fix nine matches. He also bet on snooker matches and failed to cooperate with the WPBSA investigation. Li, 32, was also charged with match-fixing and inciting or facilitating other players to manipulate match outcomes. Additionally, the 2021 Master champion Yan Bingtao has been handed a five-year ban until 11 December 2027. Zhao Xintong, with two ranking titles to his name, received a suspension of one year and eight months, set to expire on 1 September 2024.

“This has been a very complex case. It has been heartbreaking to see some young talented players fall foul of the WPBSA Conduct Regulations through pressure exerted by two senior players,” said WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson.

WTC final: Head rattles India on opening day

LONDON, JUN 7 (IANS):

Travis Head and Steve Smith took full advantage of a lacklustre Indian bowling line-up to stitch a mammoth 251-run unbeaten stand for the fourth wicket to put Australia in the driver’s seat by putting 327/3 on the board at the stumps on Day 1 of World Test Championship final at The Oval, here on Wednesday.

The day began with India bowling first, under overcast skies and fielding a four-man fast-bowling attack, with Ravichandran Ashwin’s exclusion becoming a huge talking point. They succeeded initially by reducing Australia to 76/3.

But Head, who was dropped from the playing eleven for Nagpur Test earlier this year, came out all guns blazing to lead Australia’s counter-attack and dishing out yet another memorable knock to bail his team out of a tough situation as Australia ended the day on a strong position.

As the sun came out and pitch became good to bat on, Head made merry by making an unbeaten 146 off 156 balls, laced with 22 fours and a six to score his first overseas century as well as the first-ever hundred in the short history of the marquee finale.

While Head was being

the aggressor and was also aided in his free-flowing stroke play by Indian bowlers giving him width and overpitched deliveries on pads, Steve Smith was the gritty force from the other end, continuing his good run at the venue, as Ashwin could just watch the leftright duo stitch a superb partnership.

Smith held on despite

not looking at his fluent best to be 95 not out off 227 balls, including hitting 14 boundaries. After initially bowling well and beating the bat a lot, India were very inconsistent and conceded way too many boundaries as Head and Smith piled the agony and tired them under the hot afternoon sun.

In the first session, Mohammed Siraj and Moham-

India win two gold on concluding day to finish 3rd at Asian U20 Athletics C’ship

med Shami used attacking lengths and bowling angles to target Usman Khawaja and David Warner. Siraj got the breakthrough when he angled a fuller ball across Khawaja, who pushed it away from his body with no footwork and resulted in wicketkeeper KS Bharat taking the catch.

Siraj also got some variable bounce off the pitch, hitting Marnus Labuschagne on the thumb of his top hand while almost castling Warner with a delivery which kept low. But Warner managed to slash hard off Siraj and authoritatively pulled Shami for two boundaries.

As sun started to come out, Warner hammered an off-colour Umesh Yadav for four off-side boundaries in the 15th over. Labuschagne stood way outside the crease while bringing out punch and steer off Shardul Thakur for two fours, apart from surviving two lbw appeals off him.

But on the stroke of lunch, Thakur cut Warner’s stay at 43 as the left-hander tried to pull off a short ball, only for the glove edge to be caught by Bharat diving to his right. After lunch, India fetched success immediately Shami’s fuller delivery from over the wicket came back in and castled Marnus Labus-

chagne through the gate on an attempted drive.

From there, Head began his stellar show by hitting four boundaries off the fast bowlers in the first 12 balls he faced, with a glorious flick over mid-wicket off Siraj being the standout. He then took back-to-back fours off Shami flicking on his fuller ball, before slashing off a back of the length delivery.

From the other end, Smith hanged around despite not looking in his typical fluent self and flicking twice through leg-side. He was hit on the body by Siraj while Thakur beat him with the outswingers as the two fast-bowlers kept a check on run-flow.

That changed in the 38th over when Thakur overstepped twice, conceding a four to Head while Smith hit a superb square drive and flick to pick back-toback fours in a 16-run over. Ravindra Jadeja beat Head on the outside edge and had the leading edge fall short of cover. But Head brought up his fifty in 60 balls with a well-timed punch past deep point for four.

Brief Scores: Australia 327/3 in 85 overs (Travis Head 146 not out, Steve Smith 95 not out; Mohammed Siraj 1/67, Shardul Thakur 1/75) against India.

Wrestlers suspend stir till Jun 15 after meeting Thakur; WFI polls on June 30

NEW DELHI, JUN 7

(PTI): The protesting wrestlers on Wednesday agreed to suspend their agitation till June 15 after the government assured them of filing a chargesheet against outgoing WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh by then and holding the elections to the sports body by end of the month.

Olympic medallists

Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik met Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, who invited them for a meeting to break the deadlock, three days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah met them and discussed their demands.

After the meeting, which lasted over five hours, Malik and Punia told reporters that they have also been assured that the FIRs lodged against them will be withdrawn.

The protesting wrestlers and many of their supporters were booked for violation of law and order on May 28 when they marched towards the new Parliament building without permission.

“We were told that the police investigation (in the case against Singh) will be complete by June 15. Till then, we have been asked

to wait and suspend the protest,” Malik said.

However, both Malik and Punia asserted that their agitation is not over and they have suspended their protest only till June 15 as requested by the government.

The marathon meeting between wrestlers and Thakur comes amidst the government’s efforts to reach out to the top wrestlers, who have been protesting since April 23 and demanding the arrest of Singh. Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Thakur said the meeting was held in a “good atmosphere and in a positive manner” and that the government has accepted the demands of the protesting group.

“In the meeting, it was suggested by the wrestlers that the chargesheet in the case be filed by June 15,

the WFI elections be held by June 30 and an Internal Complaints Committee of WFI be formed that should be headed by a woman,” Thakur said, adding all these proposals were agreed to unanimously.

In another key decision, the government also agreed not to allow outgoing WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh, who has completed three terms as president, and his associates to contest elections as per their demand. Singh, who first became WFI president in 2012, is already not eligible to contest the elections as per the Sports Code.

Till the election of WFI, two women coaches will be added to the IOA ad-hoc committee that is running the affairs of the WFI to look into the technical aspects, he said, adding that players will be consulted in running the federation after the elections. “The wrestlers have also demanded that those players, academies, coaches or akharas against whom there are cases should be withdrawn,” he said.

Thakur also said the wrestlers agreed to discontinue their protest and they will also convey the same to their supporters.

anchored the longer relay (4x400m) team to gold, clocking 3:40.49s. Kazakhstan won silver with a time of 3:46.19 seconds, while Korea (3:47.46s) took the bronze.

The men’s 4x400m relay team settled for a silver with a time of 3:08.78 seconds.

Mehdi Hasan added a bronze in the men’s 1500m race with a time of 3:56.01s while Shivaji Parashu Madappagoudra bagged a silver in the men’s 5000m race by clocking 14:49.05s as India’s tally swelled to 19 medals.

India ended third with 6 gold, 7 silver and 6

bronze, behind Japan (14 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze) and China (11 gold, 5 silver, 3 bronze).

On the opening day on Sunday, fast-rising Rezoana Mallick Heena and Bharatpreet Singh clinched a gold medal each in women’s 400m and men’s discus throw respectively.

Shot putter Siddharth Choudhary added another gold on Monday with a personal best throw of 19.52m while decathlete Sunil Kumar won a yellow metal on Tuesday.

A 45-member Indian team, which had 19 women, competed in the June 4 to 7 event.

“I am excited to experience a new football league in a different country. I have been fortunate to achieve amazing things in my career and achieve everything I can in Spain and Europe,” Benzema said. “It now feels the time is right for a new challenge and project ... I am looking forward to joining my new team mates and, together with them, help take this amazing club and the game in Saudi Arabia to new levels.”

Benzema follows his former Real team mate Cristiano Ronaldo to the Gulf country after the Portugal forward signed a 2-1/2 year contract estimated by media to be worth more than 200 million euros ($213.78 million) with Al Nassr in December. Having joined Real

in 2009 from Olympique Lyonnais, Benzema became the spearhead of the club’s attack after Ronaldo left to Juventus in 2018, winning the Champions League five times and the LaLiga title four times. He had his best season with Real in the 2021-22 campaign when he scored 44 goals in all competitions to lead the club to a recordextending 14th European title as well as the LaLiga crown. Early in 2021 he earned a recall from France manager Didier Deschamps to the national team for the first time in six years, after falling out of favour due to his alleged involvement in the Mathieu Valbuena sex tape scandal. The 35-yearold won the Ballon d’Or award for the best men’s player in the world last year and he looked set to stay at the Spanish club for one more year, after a 2022-23 season in which he struggled with injuries and missed out on France’s World Cup squad in Qatar.

However, an offer estimated by media to be worth more than 100 million euros from Saudi Arabia made him rethink his decision to stay in Spain for a final season, with the striker deciding to void the one-year

Benzema’sdealraises questionsaboutfutureof Saudileaguetopscorer

The arrival of Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema at Saudi Arabia champions Al-Ittihad may not be all positive as the deal puts the future of Saudi Pro League top scorer Abderrazak Hamdallah in doubt.

On Tuesday, Al-Ittihad signed Real Madrid’s second all-time top scorer, with 354 goals in a trophy-laden

14 years, on a three-year mega deal, before confirming he will wear the number nine shirt at the expense of Hamdallah. The Moroccan forward was a key part of Al-Ittihad’s success last season. Hamdallah, 32, three years younger than Benzema, scored 21 goals in 26 games and clinched the top scorer award ahead of Al-Nassr’s Anderson Talisca and Al-Hilal’s Odion Ighalo. Hamdallah was particularly clinical in the big games and was one of the main reasons that Al-Ittihad won the title for the first time since 2009. The player was relaxed about the possibility of Benzema’s arrival when

asked about it by local media last week. “We welcome any player who comes and can help the team. He is welcome, and we do not have a problem,” he said.

“We are great players, and we are used to competing inside and outside the field, and we are available for anything,” the forward added. Hamdallah has not commented since Benzema’s deal was confirmed.

But as long as Benzema is fit, it is expected Hamdallah will not be the main forward, and it will be difficult to change his position, given his lack of speed and similarity in play to the French striker.

Messi to join Inter Miami after PSG

LONDON, JUN 7 (AGEN-

CIES): Lionel Messi will snub a lucrative contract in Saudi Arabia and move to Major League Soccer side Inter Miami as a free agent after parting ways with French champion Paris St Germain, the BBC reported on Wednesday.

PARIS, JUN 7 (IANS):

Defending champion and World No.1 Iga Swiatek

defeated American teen sensation Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-2 in straight sets to sail into the semifinal of the French Open, here on Wednesday.

In a rematch of the last year’s French Open final, Swiatek maintained her undefeated record against Coco Gauff as she improved her head-to-head against the American to 7-0 with

her 1-hour and 28-minute victory on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The 22-year-old Pole has now won her last 12 matches on the clay courts of Paris. Her career win-loss record at Roland Garros improved to 26-2 with her latest win over American teenager Gauff.

She also became the first woman to win 12 consecutive main-draw matches at Roland Garros since Sere-

na Williams won 13 straight between 2015 and 2016.

In the semifinals, she will face No.14 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, who overcame No.7 seed Ons Jabeur earlier, becoming the first Brazilian woman to reach the Roland-Garros semi-finals in the Open Era --Maria Bueno reached semis here in 1966 -- and the first to reach a Grand Slam semifinal since Bueno in 1968 (US Open). Swiatek still has a

chance to keep the World No.1 ranking coming out of Paris, despite defending 2000 ranking points and No.2 Aryna Sabalenka hot on her heels.

Since Sabalenka has reached the semifinals, Swiatek needs to beat Haddad Maia and reach the final to have a chance of staying at No.1. If Sabalenka reaches the final, Swiatek could hold on to No.1 only by winning the title.

The Spaniard was largely untouchable in a 6-2, 6-1, 7-6(5) victory on Tuesday night, setting up a semifinal showdown against Novak Djokovic on Friday, in what will be one of the most eagerly-anticipated matches in years.

His clash against Djokovic will be their second overall and first at a major. It pits a young champion versus a legend.

If Alcaraz defeats Djokovic to reach his second major final, he will retain the No. 1 ATP Ranking following the tournament. Should Djokovic win, he could reclaim the top spot by winning his third Roland Garros title.

Messi, who played his final game for PSG over the weekend, was also linked with a return to Barcelona but the Spanish club have had their hands tied due to LaLiga’s financial fair play rules. Should the deal with Miami go through, the 35-year-old Argentine will play outside Europe for the first time since he joined Barca’s academy at the age of 13 and became the Spanish club’s all-time record goalscorer with 672 goals.

Messi had wanted to go to a club where he could eventually have an ownership stake, a source with knowledge of the negotiations told Reuters this week. He also wanted to maximise his existing deal with Adidas

and MLS’s relationship with Apple. MLS earns a flat fee of about $200 million per year from Apple until it reach a certain threshold of subscriptions, after which point they will earn a share of the revenue from those subscriptions.

Messi’s move to MLS is expected to drive viewers

to the Apple TV streaming platform, as the world’s most recognisable soccer player.

Messi, who led Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in December and has earned a record seven Ballon d’Or awards, won the Ligue 1 title in his two seasons with PSG as well as the French Super Cup in 2022.

The forward was also linked with a move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal after he received a formal offer.

The Gulf country has been looking to bring the game’s biggest players to its league and was successful in convincing Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo to join Al Nassr soon after the World Cup. French striker Karim Benzema joined Al Ittihad this week.

Inter Miami are coowned by former England captain David Beckham, who was one of the first major European stars to move to the United States to play in the MLS, winning the MLS Cup twice with Los Angeles Galaxy.
