State govt calls for repeal of AFSPA
Correspondent
KOHIMA, DEC 7 (NPN): In the aftermath of the horrific massacre at Oting on December 4,where 14 civilians were gunned down by a unit of the 21 Para commandos, the Nagaland cabinet Tuesday decided to ask the government of India, to repeal the controversial Armed Forces(Special Powers)Act, 1958. The demand for repeal of AFSPA has found wide support among all organisations and politicians both within and beyond Nagaland. The State cabinet on Tuesday decided to urge upon the Centre to immediately revoke the law from the Nagaland where it has been in force for over 60 years. It may be mentioned that chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Monday, while speaking at the mass funeral service at Mon, said that AFSPA had tarnished the image of the country. “We’re urging the Central government to remove AF-

SPA from Nagaland. I have spoken to Union Home Minister Amit Shah who has taken the matter very seriously,” Rio had said. The cabinet decision was announced at a press conference at Secretariat conference hall here on Tuesday, by planning & coordination, land revenue and parliamentary affairs minister Neiba Kronu. He said the decision was taken at an emergency cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Neiphiu Rio. At the meeting Tuesday, the cabinet was also briefed about the action taken after firing, including setting up of a Special Inves-
tigation Team (SIT) headed by an officer in the rank of IGP among others. Higher & technical education and tribal affairs minister and State BJP president Temjen Imna Along Longkumer, who was also present at the press conference, reminded that AFSPA was renewed every six months and not a subject matter under the state government. Along said the state gover nment could only make an appeal to the Centre to revoke AFSPA, but it was entirely the prerogative of the Centre to revoke it or not. He further opined that the Central government also ought to take note of the
feelings of the people of the State. Along said the cabinet had decided to make its appeal through proper channel to reassure the people that it was committed for repeal of AFSPA. He also informed that state BJP will convene a meeting soon to put forth the views of the people before the Central leaders. Along claimed that Union home minister Amit Shah’s statement, which was criticised, was in sync with the State government’s move to set up SIT. He said Centre’s concern on the issue was evident in both Houses of Parliament. Cabinet backs KU demands: Kronu said the Cabinet has also decided to support the demands of the Konyak Union (KU) addressed to President of India on December 6, for repeal of AFSPA from the north east, inclusion of two ENPO members to the SIT etc. Kronu also said the cabinet decided that the Special Investigation Team (SIT)
complete its investigation within one month as decided by the State government. On the demand for withdrawal of 27 Assam Rifles from Mon district, Kronu said the government would need to look into it and discuss it with the Centre. Confirming that 14 persons had died at Oting and Mon town during the two-day mayhem, Kronu said eight were currently admitted at hospitals at Dibrugarh(two) and Dimapur, with the condition of two being critical, while 22 were released. He said that the law and order situation in Mon was under control as informed by the DC.
AGATHA BACKS DEMAND National People's Party (NPP) MP Agatha Sangma, a former union minister, also demanded the repeal of the Act, terming the act as "the elephant in the room which (needs to) be addressed.” (Cont’d on p-5)

Oting killings: KU regrets Shah’s statement in Parl DIMAPUR, DEC 7 (NPN): Konyak Union (KU) and all its frontal organisations expressed deep anguish and regretted the statement made by Union home minister Amit Shah in Parliament on Monday on the Oting incident. The union in a press release termed his statement about the incident as misleading, indigestible and false. Pointing out that there were many evidences to prove what had actually transpired that fateful evening at Oting village, KU said Shah’s remarks in parliament were entirely in favour of the Indian military point of view. The union claimed that the innocent civilians, who were returning to their village from Tiru coal mine, were directly ambushed without any questions asked, unlike the Union minister’s claim in the Parliament that they were asked to stop.
The union therefore strongly urged the Centre and the ministry concerned to probe the incident properly with facts and evidences, and not simply rely on some distorted and twisted information provided by some officials yearning for promotions and national awards. The Union also urged the State government to take a serious note of the incident and deliver justice to the victims without further delay. Giving a statement in Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said a vehicle was signalled to stop but it tried to speed away. Suspecting the presence of insurgents in the vehicle, the security personnel opened fire, he said. Six out of eight occupants of the vehicle died in the firing by security forces, Shah said, adding that later, it was found to be “a case of mistaken identity”.

Kaisa Rio speaking at NAWO silver jubilee on Tuesday. (NP)
Correspondent KOHIMA, DEC 7 (NPN): Northern Angami Women Organisation (NAWO) celebrated its silver jubilee on the theme “truth is strength” at AMK building, here on Tuesday. Guest of honor for the celebration, Kaisa Rio, wife of chief minister Neiphiu Rio in her speech paid respects to the officials of the organisation. She said NAWO had made significant developments in the past 25 years through which women had benefitted. She urged the organisation to look back and introspect and strive to improve itself in the weaker areas. Kaisa pointed out that in the past, women focused
mostly in household chores and cultivation. However, she said this had changed in the present time and now women were excelling in education and employment avenues which in turn had improved the living standard. She pointed out that news of women performing well in their professions were very encouraging and helps motivate others to follow suit. “I am hopeful that we would progress in so many other fields by the time we reach 50tth anniversary”, Kaisa said. She opined that there was a need to change the perception that all educated youths should get a government job. Instead, she said, par-
been plaguing the land for generations and atrocities being meted out on citizens under the guise of the Act. The community also hit out at union home minister for terming the incident as “unfortunate” and “mistaken identity” and said that massacre of civilians could not be termed as unfortunate when the ministry was responsible for extension of AFSPA under which these inhuman atrocities were committed. Assistant professor, Dr. Likhase Sangtam said “Nagas had gone through hard and difficult times to be part of this great diverse nation. But today when we reflect the Naga society, to great extent we seem to have moved on from those atrocities meted out to our people”. Dr. Likhase said that
slaying of innocent civilians in an inhuman way was very difficult to take and as an academician, while trying to change the whole narrative in line with the constitution of India towards holistic integration to this great nation, “this kind of act will dispel the people of the region from what is being professed”. The research scholars’ forum, students’, teachers and non-teaching staffs from the campus in unison condemned the gruesome act and showed solidarity with the rest in conveying their deepest condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed for God’s comfort and strength to get through this time of grief. ENSUPCC: Eastern Naga Students’ Union, Patkai Christian College (ENSUPCC) held a candle-
NTUCT light vigil at the Bundrock auditorium on Tuesday evening “in respect of the victims murdered by Indian security forces at Oting village and Mon town on December 4 and 5.” During the vigil, ENSUPCC president, Anok Bulei recounted the tragic incident of December 4 and 5 and expressed shock and anger at the brutal killings and “the manner in which the security forces handled the dead bodies in their attempt to cover up the killings.” Vice principal, Angel Sonari also extended solidarity to the Oting villagers and the Konyak people on behalf of the college. “We condemn the brutal act of the Indian security forces in the murder of our Konyak brothers,” her message read. Condemning the Indi-
an security forces, assistant professor Dr. Ponghsak Phom termed the incident a “horrific atrocity” and said the “massacre of innocents” was not a one-off incident. Dr. Phom demanded the repeal of the draconian AFSPA. Meanwhile, assistant professor, Bauna Panmei reminded the gathering of both teachers and students to be mindful of the Naga history which had suffered from a “long history of violence” abetted by the AFSPA. “This is our reality. This has been our reality for 50 years,” he maintained. NTUCT: Naga Tribal Union Chumukedima Town (NTUCT) organised a candlelight service in solidarity for the victims of the massacre at Chumoukedima on Tuesday.

The event was initiated by Konyak Students’ Union Kohima (KSUK) and supported by Angami Students’ Union and the other Eastern Naga student bodies. The banners read “AFSPA is a blot on Indian Democracy. Remove AFSPA im-
mediately.” KSUK president said the banners were put up so that the message of public resentment against AFSPA and over the massacre of innocent people could be sent out across the country. Activists of the student unions collectively put up banners at strategic
locations of the town, including PHQ junction, Classic Island, High School Junction and TCP gate junction. Leaders of the student bodies said they planned to continue with the exercise in the future to press the authorities to revoke AFSPA.

NEDF appeals to CMs of NE to repeal AFSPA
Correspondent
SHILLONG, DEC 7: Condemning the gruesome gunning down of 14 civilians in Nagaland by Special Forces of the Indian Army, the North East Dialogue Forum (NEDF) has urged chief ministers of the North Eastern states to collectively prevail upon the Centre for the immediate repeal of the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the region. “Shooting civilians by the Indian military is a racist act. It is very clear to all of us that AR (Assam Rifles) is killing the civilians under AFSPA. AR is confident that they will be protected by this law. NEDF also appreciates your leadership and intervention so that the situation would not escalate further,” the Forum wrote to the chief ministers.
Nagaland killing: Mizoram CM calls for justice, pease AIZAWL, DEC 7 (PTI): Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has extended solidarity with the people of Nagaland over the recent killing of 14 civilians by security forces and prayed that justice prevails and peace returns soon. The chief minister said that he stands with the people of Nagaland in this hour of grief. “Prayers for the lives lost and the unfortunate incident at Oting, Mon district, Nagaland. I stand with the people of Nagaland in this time of grief. Let justice prevails and, May peace be restored soon,” he tweeted late on Monday night.
The NEDF sought to know from the Union government has to “who has given the authority to AR in Sonari in Assam to cross the state border to Nagaland and carry out the shooting of civilians. Technically AR under AFSPA are deployed in the region to assist the civil authority, meaning AR should operate under the order of the DC. Do the AR seek the permission
from the concerned DC of the District in Assam and Nagaland to organize such military operation? If not, what are you going to do.” “What could be the role of the owner of one of the coal mines in Mon district bordering Sonari in Assam to get the help from the AR to protect his illegal coal mining? Were there any procedures to arrest the suspects and investigate them to bring the suspected
perpetrator under the rule of law? Is the rule of law under the AR,” the Forum questioned. “How long will the Government of India allow our innocent people to be killed by AR with the false allegation,” the NEDF asked the chief ministers and demanded for the constitution of an “independent, credible and impartial investigation team” to examine the
case of killing by AR at Tiru-Oting area of Mon district of Nagaland within a time frame so that this report can be submitted to the double bench of the Supreme Court of India presently working on the cases of extra-judicial execution for further legal action against the perpetrators and the responsible commander of the concern AR in Sonari. The Forum appealed to all the chief ministers of the region and the PM to provide immediate compensation of Rs 10 lakh each as relief and rehabilitation of the families who lost their bread earners. It also urged the CMs in the region to call an emergency meeting to discuss the situation of high handedness of AR under AFSPA and take steps to repeal AFSPA, 1958 from the North Eastern region of India immediately.
Nagaland killing: M’laya AITC holds candle-light vigil Correspondent SHILLONG, DEC 7: A candle-lit demonstration of solidarity with the bereaved families of the victims of firing by security forces in Nagaland was staged at the main commercial centre of Khyndailad here in Meghalaya on Tuesday evening by the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). “We are here to demonstrate our solidarity with the affected families who have been grieving in Mon district of Nagaland. All are aware of the situation, the background and it will be pertinent for us to stand by the people of Mon district and particularly the affected families and urge upon all the authorities
concerned which includes the state government of Nagaland and Government of India to ensure justice,” said former chief minister and AITC leader Mukul Sangma. “Every citizen of this great nation must have the sense of belongingness and we collectively build this great nation and this is the essence of our democracy. There should not be any space or room left for any citizen to feel that they are deprived of the necessary justice when called for. Therefore it will be expected from the authorities concern under the Government of India and the state government concerned that all the measures need to be taken to ensure that
justice is done in the right perspective,”Sangma said addressing the gathering. “Where do you need the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), if the state government is capable of dealing with the problem of militancy, insurgency and terrorism by itself, without having to take recourse to this draconian law? I don’t find any reason for any state to actually have this particular law to be operational in any part of the state or any part of the country,” the former CM underscored. “The state of Meghalaya has demonstrated in dealing with terrorism, insurgency in a manner that should be probably taken up for a case study by Government of India,”
Sangma, who was credited with having effectively dealt with insurgency in the Garo Hills region during his tenure as Chief Minister, said. “The people of Northeast understand how complex it is to deal with the problem of terrorism and insurgency, but Meghalaya has demonstrated its capability without having to resort to adopting this draconian law. This is something which must be taken cognizance of by Government of India and look at all possibilities of dealing with insurgency and other problems related to terrorism in the right perspective without having to resort to this draconian law,” he iterated

DNLA kill 3, injure 8 in Assam: Police
HAFLONG, DEC 7 (PTI): Three people were killed and eight others injured after being allegedly thrashed by DNLA militants at their camp in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, police said on Tuesday. Among those killed was a DNLA militant, they said. Five DNLA militants were arrested in connection with the incident, they added. Two bodies and nine injured people were rescued from the designated camp at Kasmaipur in Maibang in the early hours of Monday after villagers complained to the police that local youths were held captive there, Additional Superintendent of Police Indranil Baruah said. Among those rescued were both DNLA militants and local villagers, he said. Of the nine wounded, one succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment, he added. The rest are currently
undergoing treatment at the Haflong Civil Hospital, he added. Five DNLA members, who were among those who had come overground for peace talks recently, have been arrested in the case and an investigation is on, Baruah said. Six local youths were taken away by the DNLA militants to their designated camp, where the militants were staying after coming overground, on charges of stealing and selling parts of an abandoned excavator in the area on Sunday night, the villagers claimed. The villagers approached the police when the youth did not return till Monday. Among the victims were the six villagers, two of who were found dead by the police team. The other five victims were new recruits of the DNLA who had tried to escape from the camp and were being punished by their
seniors, according to the villagers. One of the new members died at the hospital on Tuesday. Meanwhile, local organisations on Tuesday released a joint statement condemning the incident. The Jadikhe Naisho Hoshom and Dimasa Jalai Hosom appealed to the authorities to investigate the matter expeditiously and deliver justice to the bereaved families. The DNLA had declared a unilateral ceasefire for three months on September 7 as a “goodwill gesture and as a positive response to the call of peace” by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The ‘chairman’ of the militant outfit, Edika Diphusa alias Kharmindao Dimasa, his deputy Juddychan Haflongbar alias America Dimasa, and ‘general secretary’ Prithamjit Jidongsa alias Galao Dimasa, had come overground on September 24.
Oting incident: TMC holds candle light vigil More organizations from NE condemn Oting incident

position TMC Legislative Party leader Mukul Sangma, the president of the party’s Meghalaya unit Charles Pyngrope and its MLAs. Shillong wore a sombre look as scores of people with lighted candles in their hand braved the early winter cold to pay their respects to the victims, who were gunned down by the Army mistak-
ing them for insurgents in Nagaland’s Mon district. The party has sought an appointment with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday to hand over a memorandum seeking compensation for the families of the innocent citizens killed. TMC has also asked the Centre to come clean with its position on AFSPA.

A press comminique MWC information and publicity team stated that its Secretar y General Yambem Arun Meetei expressed shock and was saddened on the “inhuman action of security forces during the festive month of killing innocent people of the region and condemned it in the strongest term.” It stated that “such an inhuman act that have increased the number of
widows and orphans is permitted by AFSPA. Such law that allows the security forces to kill innocent public is not acceptable under any circumstances. Therefore, such licence to kill the public should be repealed immediately from the North Eastern Region. “ WMC expressed its solidarity to the Konyak tribe as well as the people of Nagaland and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. ZHRF: The Zomi Human Rights Foundation ( ZHRF) , Lamka Hq, Manipur strongly condemned the killing of civilian near Tiru village in Tizit areas of Mon District, Nagaland on the December 4, by the 21st Para Commando of the Indian army and withdrawal of AFSPA from
northeast India. A press release by ZHRF secretary of information and publicity department stated that the “atrocities meted out to innocent civilians, unarmed without any provocation was a gross violation of the Fundamental Rights guaranteed to its citizen and enshrined in the Constitution of India.” It said the Right to Life under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution which stipulates that no lives of a person shall be taken away without the procedure established by law has been blatantly violated. It further added that the provisions of the Covenants on International Human Rights law has been trampled upon by the act of such killings and no law can condoned such
59 years after 1962 tension with China still exists in Tawang Arunachal reports single TAWANG (ARUNACHAL PRADESH), DEC 7 (PTI): For visitors driving into Tawang, a quiet little town of lumber and brick houses with sloping tin roofs built haphazardly around a winding road, it’s hard to believe that one of India’s most decisive post-independence battles was fought here 59 years ago. Tawang wears its history – and also its present -- with ease. The flourishing town, with restaurants selling everything from noodles to dosas and locals returning home to new business prospects, shows little sign of the tension building up at the border about 40 km away to the north. The giveaway is the fleeting presence of convoys of troops being sent to guard the icy Himalayan heights at the border with China, India’s northern neighbour which attacked Tawang in 1962. Nearly 800 Indian troops were killed and 1,000 captured
in the hotly contested but unequal combat. China has been building military infrastructure not too far from the border over the last decade. This includes new highways, military posts, helipads and missile launching sites on the Tibetan plateau, all of it overlooking Tawang, which stands at a height of 10,000 feet and is about 445 km from the Arunachal capital Itanagar. According to military sources, patrolling by Indian troops has been intensified along the Line of Actual Control in response to doubling of patrolling and at times “inadvertent” transgressions by the Chinese on the snowladen mountain borderline between the two Asian giants. The centre of the town is the ancient Tawang monastery built in 1680 that sits on a craggy height overlooking the township of 14,000 people, mostly Buddhist Monpas and Tibetans with a sprinkling of
Nepali, Marwari, Assamese and Bengali residents. Despite the tension on the border with China and the fact that it is but a three hour, sometimes less, drive from the border, Tawang seems blissfully oblivious to its strategic position. The number of hotels has increased from five in 2016 to 20 and more are being built. Restaurants are mushrooming, dishing out noodles and also hilsa fish cooked Bengali style and dosas. Shops are laden with Chinese imports through Nepal, army surplus stock and the latest in fashion are flourishing. Lhamo Yangzom, a London-trained lawyer who has come back to Tawang, is even contemplating setting up a ‘futsal’, a mini football stadium. “Business is doing well, fuelled by money from construction and road building projects and the influx of more troops. Youngsters are
returning home after being exposed to big cities in India and abroad and are starting new departmental stores, tourist companies and hotels. I myself am contemplating setting up a futsal,” Yangzom told PTI. However, somewhere in the background the ‘Chinese dragon’ continues to lurk in the minds of people. “Sometimes I get only Chinese FM on my car radio while driving, I don’t know how that happens. Sometimes the phone shows that the pictures I have taken of a lovely mountain or a waterfall are somewhere in China! … almost as if someone is watching us all the time,” Yangzom said. The past carries into the present in the recollections of those who remember the fall of Tawang in October 1962. “We heard the guns booming and decided that we needed to shift to safety,” said Tsewang Dhondup, former MLA of Tawang, then just five years old.
COVID case, 2 recoveries ITANAGAR, DEC 7 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh reported only a single COVID-19 case on Tuesday, taking the virus tally to 55,294, a senior health official said here. As many as 54,979 people have recuperated from the disease so far in the state, including two on Monday, the official said. The northeastern state had reported five new COVID-19 cases on Monday. The coronavirus death toll in the frontier state remained at 280 as no fresh fatality was registered in the past 24 hours, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said. The state now has 35 active COVID-19 cases, he said. The COVID-19 recovery rate now is 99.43 per cent, while the active ratio stood at 0.06 per cent, the SSO said. West Kameng district has the highest number of active cases at 14, followed by the Capital Complex Region comprising Itanagar, Naharlagun, Nirjuli and Banderdewa areas (9), Tawang (6) and Lower Dibang Valley (5). A total of 12,00,058 samples have been tested for coronavirus in the state thus far including, 320 on Monday, Jampa said, adding that the positivity rate stood at 0.31 per cent. State Immunisation Officer Dr Dimong Padung said that a total of 14,24,641 people have been inoculated so far in the state including, 2,877 on Monday.
atrocities. The ZHRF also pointed out that the Supreme Court in NPMHR versus Union of India with matters relating to the Armed Forces Special Power Act has laid down list of dos and don’ts to be followed by the armed forces while operating in the disturbed areas. It however lamented that list of guidelines laid
down by the Supreme were ignored and violated. ZHRF said government of the day at the helm of affairs needs a rethinking about the Armed Forces Special Power Act, adding that the Act “rather than alleviating the hardship of the citizen of India has brought about hardship and anguished to the general population.”

NEW DELHI, DEC 7 (AGENCIES): Nagaland’s lone Rajya Sabha member, KG Kenye, Tuesday afternoon entered the Well of Rajya Sabha demanding that he be heard on the killing of civilians by security personnel during the discussion of two Bills but did not get a chance. According to Deccan Herald report, he received support from the Opposition MPs, who halted their sloganeering demanding revocation of suspension of 12 MPs, but was not allowed as the discussion was on. Kenye entered the Well after the House re-assembled at 3 PM and stood near the reporters’ table for some time pleading for a chance to speak during the debate on The Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Bill, 2021 and The Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2020 together. Opposition MPs who were shouting slogans stopped for a brief while and urged deputy chairman Harivansh to allow him. As the Deputy Chairperson did not call him, the
Opposition MPs then started shouting slogans supporting Kenye and the issue he raised. After a few minutes, Kenye returned his seat while Harivansh adjourned the House, as the Opposition continued their protest. “Today the government got the Rajya Sabha adjourned at 3 PM for the day because it did not want the lone Nagaland MP, K G Kenye, to speak on the horrific killings in his state. And the Rajya Sabha is the Council of States,” Congress Chief Whip Jairam Ramesh tweeted. He also said, “he (Kenye) is an outstanding speaker and a very dignified man. Felt very sorry for him today. The entire Opposition pledged him support to speak.” Meanwhile, HT report said Kenye demanded immediate repeal of the AFSPA asserting that it is “tantamount to a licence to kill” and has only created animosity between the people and the government. He lamented that the civilian killings will undo the progress made in firming up the Naga peace process.
Goa: Ravi Naik resigns, Cong’s strength reduced to 3 PANAJI, DEC 7 (PTI): In another setback to the Congress ahead of Goa polls, party MLA and former chief minister Ravi Naik tendered his resignation from the state Assembly on Tuesday. In October this year, former Goa chief minister Luizinho Faleiro had resigned as Congress MLA and later join the Mamata Baner jee-led Trinamool Congress. With Naik’s resignation, the Congress’ strength in the 40-member state Assembly has been reduced to three. Naik, who represented Ponda seat in Goa, submitted his resignation to Legislative Assembly Speaker Rajesh Patnekar. He was accompanied by his two sons, who joined the ruling BJP last year. “I have resigned. I will let you know what is the next course of action,” Naik told reporters here after submitting his resignation. According to sources, Naik is expected to join the BJP later in the day in the presence of the party’s Goa election in-charge Devendra Fadnavis. Ravi Naik’s younger son Roy Naik said he has requested his father to join the BJP. In the 2017 state As-

sembly polls, the Congress had emerged as the single largest party by winning 17 seats. However, the BJP, which had won 13 seats, forged an alliance with some regional outfits and independents to form government in the coastal state. Since then, a number of Congress MLAs quit the party and joined the BJP. After the 2017 polls, Valpoi MLA Vishwajit Rane was the first to resign from the Congress. He later joined the BJP and won the bypoll from the seat. Rane is currently the state’s health minister. Soon after Rane’s exit, two more Congress MLAs - Subhash Shirodkar (who represented Shiroda seat) and Dayanand Sopte (Mandrem) - left the party to join the BJP. Both of them later won the by-elections held in May 2019.
State govt calls for repeal of AFSPA (From p-1) Sangma said the killing of 14 civilians in Nagaland, “reminded all of the Malom massacre” in which over 10 civilians were shot dead in Imphal “and prompted a 28-yearold Irom Sharmila to go on a 16 year-long hunger strike.” The insurgency issue has not been helped by the enactment of AFSPA and instead what it has done is that it has caused civilians to be unfairly tortured, raped and killed, she alleged. “Therefore, I take this opportunity not just on behalf of my party, but also on behalf of the people of Northeast, that this act be repealed,” she said.

Scindia issues plan for airport management
NEW DELHI, DEC 7 (PTI): Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday said he has issued an action plan for better crowd management at airports across the country which includes expanding RT-PCR test services and ramping up forex counters. Passengers have been complaining on social media of crowding and chaos at major international airports in the country since December 1, when a new set of travel rules were imposed amid concerns over the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. Taking to Twitter, Scindia said, “Took stock of the preparedness, testing capacities, and the situation on the ground with regard to crowd management at both private and AAI airports.” The Airports Authority of India (AAI) controls more than 100 airports across the country. However, major airports such as in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad are operated by private entities. The minister said he has put in place “an action plan with eight compliances on immigration queues, expanding RT-PCR service providers, ramping up help desks and forex counters, and floor management”.

In a press release, NPF legislature party leader TR Zeliang said AFSPA was a draconian law and the same must be immediately repealed if human rights were at all valued in India. NPF legislature party demanded that the Indian Army HQ. should answer to the Naga people on whether standard operating procedure of AFSPA was followed by the Army personnel during the said Operation including the exact origin of intelligence input(s) leading to the carnage. Stating that the brutal killing of 14 innocent civilians was a violation of human right of the highest degree, NPF legislature party said the Indian Army, at a time like this, should recollect how in the recent past, a good number of daring Naga jawans lost their lives while encountering the Country’s enemies in the line of duty. The party said that the
Naga martyrs were highly honoured with accolades and awards, however, the Indian Army mercilessly killed innocent Naga civilians in return for such acts of heroic sacrifices for the Country. NPF legislature party has urged upon the SIT to judiciously carry out the investigation without fear or favour so justice was delivered. It also demanded that at the earliest time possible, it must be revealed under whose directive and command the dastardly act of massacre took place. When the Naga people were yearning for peace and settlement of the long-pending “IndoNaga” political issue, NPF legislature party said “the genocide committed by the Indian Army under Mon District has threatened the very existence of the Naga people and is most shocking.” It said that no amount of reasoning can justify such merciless killings of innocent civilians.

LUCKNOW (UP), DEC 7 (PTI): Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday asserted that the people wearing red caps, a trademark headgear of his party members, are “red alerts” also for the BJP as they will oust it from the power in the next UP assembly polls. Yadav made the retort soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a dig at the Samajwadi Party, said in Gorakhpur that those wearing red caps are after red beacon and are a red alert to Uttar Pradesh. Reacting to Prime Minister Modi’s dig at his party, Akhilesh too, in a tweet in Hindi, listed some “red alerts for the BJP”. “For the BJP, there is a red alert of inflation, of unemployment, of the bad plight of farmers and labour-
ers, of Hathras and Lakhimpur Kheri (incidents) of the oppression of women and youths, of a destroyed education system, business and health, besides the red cap, which will oust the BJP from power,” said former UP chief minister in his tweet. “There will be an ‘inquilab’ (revolution) of red and change in 2022,” he added. Addressing a public meeting in Gorakhpur earlier after dedicating to the country three megaprojects, including an AIIMS and a fertiliser plant, Modi said, “Today, the entire UP very well knows that those wearing red caps are concerned about red beacon (‘laal batti’) and they are not bothered about your pain and sorrows.”
Omicron: Women delegation meets B’luru doc is Governor over Oting killings positive again (From p-1) Further, the memoBENGALURU, DEC 7 (PTI): The city-based doctor, one of the two earliest cases of Omicron variant of Covid-19 to be detected in the country, has tested positive for the virus again, while the other, a South African national who flew out of here without informing the authorities, has been booked by the police. The South African, of Gujarati origin, who was quarantined here, later flew to Dubai. “It is true that the doctor who was infected with Omicron variant has once again tested positive for covid-19,” a Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike official told PTI. Requesting anonymity, the official said the doctor is under isolation, but was asymptomatic. Meanwhile, police have registered a case against the South African national for flying without informing the authorities in violation of the quarantine norms.
The memorandum, which was submitted to the governor with copies to the President of India, Prime Minister of India, Union Defence Minister, Union Home Minister, Chief Minister of Nagaland and the Home Minister of Nagaland, demanded convening of a special assembly session at the earliest and strongly recommend to the Government of India repealing of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958. It also demanded all Indian army cantonments and Assam Rifles camps be shifted immediately from all civilian areas and village habitations in all Naga areas. The memorandum placed on record strong objection to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on the floor of the Parliament concerning f ‘mistaken identity’ and ‘self defence’ and demanded an official apology on the same.
randum demand timely investigation by SIT and make public the report on action taken against the perpetrators. It urged the governor to ensure that the guilty officers and commandos and jawans be immediately suspended pending investigation and dismiss from active service, strip all benefits and come under the purview of criminal procedures of the Court and the Law. The delegation demanded that the names of the identified culprits be released in the public domain. The memorandum asked the Government of India to help the families of the deceased with adequate compensation and “not insult us with announcements of petty cash compensation.” The women delegates also urged the government of India to stand by its commitment and ensure signing an early peace accord “for peace in our land.”

MATHURA (UP), DEC 7 (PTI): Uttar Pradesh minister Laxmi Narain Chaudhary has rhetorically asked if the Krishna temple is not built in Mathura, will it be built in Lahore in Pakistan. The supposed temple site, which is a subject of multiple lawsuits, is located inside an Aurangzeb-era mosque in Mathura and shares its premises with a prominent temple. The minister said the Krishna temple will be complete if it is constructed on the entire land up to the remains of Kans Qila, an area which includes the Shahi Idgah mosque. “The area of the temple should stretch up to the dilapidated wall of Kans Qila,” Chaudhary told reporters. “If the Krishna temple will not be built in Mathura, would it be built in Lahore,”
GORAKHPUR (UP), DEC 7 (PTI): Taking a swipe at the Samajwadi Party ahead of assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday equated “red cap” with “red alert” for the state. Addressing a public meeting here after dedicating to the nation three mega projects, including an AIIMS and a fertiliser plant, Modi said, “Today, the entire UP very well knows that those wearing red caps are concerned about red beacon (‘laal batti’) and they are not bothered about your pain and sorrows.” “The red cap people want power to commit scams, fill their coffers, indulge in illegal grabbing (of resources) and to give complete freedom to the mafia,” he said. Stepping up his attack on the rival ahead of the assembly polls early next year, Modi said, “The red cap people want to form government to show favour to terrorists and to free them from jail. Hence, you should remember that those wearing red caps are red alert for UP, in other words alarm bells.” Red cap is a trademark of Samajwadi Party leaders as well as workers.

the state government is doing very well. His remarks came days after the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha was denied permission for installation and ‘jalabhishek’ of Lord Krishna’s idol on December 6 at the Idgah adjoining the Krishna temple. The district administration on November 28 had imposed prohibitory orders under CrPC Section 144. Meanwhile, another UP minister Anand Swarup Shukla said the Muslim community should come forward and hand over ‘safed bhawan’ (white structure) at the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura to Hindus. He said while the court had resolved the Ayodhya issue, the ‘white structures’ in Kashi (Varanasi) and Mathura hurt Hindus. He was apparently referring to the Muslim religious structures at the two places. “A time will come when the white structure in Mathura that hurts every Hindu will be removed with the help of the court. Dr Ram Manohar Lohia had said that the Muslims of India would have to believe that Ram and Krishna were their ancestors,” Chaudhary said.

Sanjay Raut and Rahul Gandhi
NEW DELHI/MUMBAI, DEC 7 (IANS): Ahead of his meeting with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi later on Tuesday, Shiv Sena MP and Chief Spokesperson Sanjay Raut has declared that the “Maha Vikas Aghadi government is like a mini-United Progressive Alliance” which is doing well. He said there has been a lot of media speculation whether the Sena is joining the UPA and if it would support the Congress in the upcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Goa and other states. “The Congress is in power along with Sena and NCP in the MVA and
views working on a common minimum programme. It is an experiment and the MVA is like a mini-UPA... Such experiments must be emulated elsewhere in the country,” Raut urged. Whether the UPA or the Opposition parties, they should come forward and provide alternatives, and this is the viewpoint of both Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray as well as NCP President Sharad Pawar, he asserted. Raut’s statements assume significance, coming barely a week after All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) chief and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee had loudly hammered coffin-nails for the UPA following her meetings with Sena and NCP leaders in Mumbai, while the Congress was kept out. As a seething Congress reacted furiously, the Sena not only reiterated -- akin to the NCP -- that “no opposition unity was possible in the country without the Congress”, but Raut also decided to mend the fences by meeting with Rahul Gandhi and possibly even Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

ust when the desire of Nagas for peaceful solution was looking bright after nearly 25 years of intensive negotiations between the two Naga political groups and the government of India , tragedy struck to cast a pall of gloom; when 14 innocent civilians of Mon district, besides an jawan of the army’s elite 21 Para Commandos were killed in a botched up army operation. The shocking tragedy that occurred near Oting village in Mon district is still fresh especially when first victims- 6 young men who were the main bread earners of their families- were gunned down. They were returning back and probably looking forward to spend Christmas at home with their families with the money they had earned by working in the nearby coal mines at Tiru valley. The 21 Paras set up an ambush to ‘capture’ or ‘eliminate’ the militants who, as per their intelligence inputs, were travelling in a white coloured pick up truck. Unfortunately, the elite 21 Para commando fired to kill and so six innocent youths were killed and two injured. The alibi of the army that the vehicles tried to speed away when ordered to stop and so the unit was forced to shoot to kill not to stop. The victims were simple and ordinary people working in coal mines and not armed militants. Even if some of those in the mini-truck had a double barrel shot gun, it is not unusual for a Naga to carry a gun since it is a symbol of one’s hunting prowess. Anyway no gun, whether shot gun or military gun was found in the ill fated truck. The second tragedy happened after some villagers at Oting went to inspect the site from where sound of heavy gunfire emanated a few hours earlier. At the site, when villagers found bodies inside plastic bags loaded in another vehicle by the 21 Paras; they burst in anger. A scuffle with the para unit ensued and the latter resorted to firing a killed seven more. A jawan was also among those who was killed and according to official sources, the villagers had attacked him with a dao. The incident is a throw back on state of fear and uncertainty that people in Nagaland in particular and north east in general live under. The incident also highlights the manner in which the Armed Forces(Special Powers) Act 1958 is being largely understood as a necessity in order to contain law and order problem with help from the armed forces. The AFSPA has been a heated subject of debate and discussions at various fora and also in the courts. Why the government of India, ruled by various political parties or coalitionsCongress, Janata Party, NDA, UPA etc-have fought shy of repealing it is not understood. The army has no business in civilian affairs only except when there is a calamity or a rebellion/civil war when the civil administration is unable to function normally. Nagaland has been under the Disturbed Areas Act since 1958 through which the AFSPA has been in force. It means that no government in the state can administer without AFSPA even after statehood in 1963. If the government of India can secure solution to the Naga political issue then perhaps it will also close the chapter on AFSPA but this remains to be seen whether the Centre can walk the talk.
DailyDevotion Repentance
Godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation… —2 Corinthians 7:10 Conviction of sin is best described in the words: My sins, my sins, my Savior, How sad on Thee they fall. Conviction of sin is one of the most uncommon things that ever happens to a person. It is the beginning of an understanding of God. Jesus Christ said that when the Holy Spirit came He would convict people of sin (see John 16:8). And when the Holy Spirit stirs a person’s conscience and brings him into the presence of God, it is not that person’s relationship with others that bothers him but his relationship with God— “Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in your sight…” (Psalm 51:4). The wonders of conviction of sin, forgiveness, and holiness are so interwoven that it is only the forgiven person who is truly holy. He proves he is forgiven by being the opposite of what he was previously, by the grace of God. Repentance always brings a person to the point of saying, “I have sinned.” The surest sign that God is at work in his life is when he says that and means it. Anything less is simply sorrow for having made foolish mistakes— a reflex action caused by self-disgust. The entrance into the kingdom of God is through the sharp, sudden pains of repentance colliding with man’s respectable “goodness.” Then the Holy Spirit, who produces these struggles, begins the formation of the Son of God in the person’s life (see Galatians 4:19). This new life will reveal itself in conscious repentance followed by unconscious holiness, never the other way around. The foundation of Christianity is repentance. Strictly speaking, a person cannot repent when he chooses— repentance is a gift of God. The old Puritans used to pray for “the gift of tears.” If you ever cease to understand the value of repentance, you allow yourself to remain in sin. Examine yourself to see if you have forgotten how to be truly repentant.

W/C of NNPG on Oting Villagers massacre
n a violence and conflict torn world today, the international community looks up to India to be a torch bearer and champion the cause of universal peace and democracy in keeping with her most cherished principle of ‘AHIMSA’ as has been propounded tirelessly by Mahatma Gandhi, the father of Indian nation and the icon of non-violence. It is however extremely incongruous that the world largest democracy and an aspiring world super power continues to blemish her global reputation due to abject human rights violations principally owing to enforcement of AFSPA exclusively in the Naga inhabited areas of India and North east India. Since it’s introduction in the year 1958 hitherto, rather than achieving its objective of quelling the rebellions, the AFSPA has paradoxically provoked more unpopular anti-India sentiments and caused proliferation of more extra-constitutional armed groups in the affected regions. No scientific inventions could ever gauge the wanton destructions of innocent lives and properties the AFSPA has wrought upon the Naga people for decades. Endowed with such unfettered powers to destroy lives, the Indian Army which is considered as the most disciplined Army in the world can neither claim valour or victory nor pride
themselves as defender of the country when they do unleash such unfathomable horror upon their own people whom they have sworn to protect. While the Indian Army commanders and soldiers on ground must also own the responsibilities for the gravest acts of inhumanity against the Nagas and where the 4th December 2021 Oting villagers massacre is one among many such blunder, it is in fact the GOI and her policy makers who should squarely be blamed for all the horrible fallouts of AFSPA on the peace yearning and friendly Naga people. Speediest form of justice must be delivered by avoiding any pretexts of divergent agencies involvement in the investigation. India, the oldest civilisation with the most tolerant constitution and vibrant multi-democracy in the world must seriously ponder on the validity of an archaic AFSPA and must immediately renounce and revoke the same so as to restore the faith, confidence and hope in the democratic institution of India where every citizen regardless of race, religion, castes or status could freely enjoy the ‘ right to life’ as guaranteed in the constitution of the republic of India. The decades of military atrocities, suppressions and government sponsored /sanctioned killings has proved to be futile
over and again and that IndoNaga conflict could be resolved only through peaceful, political dialogue and mutual acceptance of each other. To quote Surendra Mohanty an MP from Odhisa then Orissa and an opponent of AFSPA “we want a free India. But, we do not want a free India with barbed wires and concentration camps, where havaldars (sergeants) can shoot at sight any man”. Likewise Indo-Naga issue is far past beyond AFSPA and the most regrettable cycles of violence over the last many decades should not be allowed to rear up its vicious head again to haunt the survivors and also to deter the posterity from stepping into the path of violence once again. Having fully reposed our confidence in the commitment of the GOI led by the charismatic and iron-willed leadership of Prime Minister Narendra modi and Home Minister Amit shah to resolve Indo-Naga issue without further delay, we also make an earnest appeal to revoke AFSPA from Nagaland as precursor to peaceful, honourable and acceptable political solution. The NNPGs deeply mourns with the families of the victims along with the rest of the Nagas and praying for the speedy recuperation of the injured. Issued by- Media Cell , W/C,NNPGs

How is the world?
t would have been different story today if Mahatma Gandhi lived little longer, he said victory does not come from force but moral courage to resist submission from imposition. He continued if you do not want to be in Indian Union nobody will force you, I do not believe in force union. But in reverse Indian used force, according to the book in “My years with Nehru 1948-64 by B.N. Mulich, Chief Intelligent Bureau of India pp. 308” ‘Troops moved into Tuensang by October 1955, and the war with Nagas started from then onwards’. According to Statesman national paper in Kolkata elude 1957-58 budget of military operation Nagaland of Rupees 40 million and damage Rupees 39 million excluding military maintenance operation within 2 months. 3701 house were burned down, then the Armed Force Special Powers Act (AFSPA) regulation 1958 was signed and promulgated by President Rajender Prasad which came into force till up today. The act was introduced to supress Naga Political movement thereby Naga people suffered 65 years till up today with three time Cease Fire signed by Naga political group and Indian Government and talk was in highest level from 1964-66, but no final Political settlement came to conclusion. Then in 1978 Shillong accord the highest level talk with IM resulted to framework agreement which was signed in 2015.
Naga people believed that Indian Government is sincere and serious but today the world knows the attitude of the Indian hypocrisy. India is proud to be the biggest democracy in the world but they ignored 1951 Naga Plebiscite democratic mandate with 99.99% through thumb impression. Indian liberated East Pakistan to Bangladesh and they believed it was right, India led Afro-Asia country forum and advocated self-determination but suppressed Naga Political right. With same reply what Amit Shah Home minister said in Parliament on 4th Dec,2021, it is ‘mistaken identity’, with same statement Naga people suffered last 70 years with mistaken identity and regret, therefore until these special act AFSPA repeal Naga people will suffer because it is a special act to deal Naga People political issues. If India believe that Naga problem is political issue then special act of AFSPA should repeal immediately because talk is in highest level. Ancient Egyptian civilization suppressed to Israelite but sovereign Lord liberated Israel, and thus Egyptian civilization died and buried in its own land but the history of Israelites people became the history of the world. India cannot suppress Naga people forever, a day will come that Naga People will be free, then the world will come to know the Purpose of God. Rev. Dr. V.K. Nuh
Human Rights violation by the police and security forces in NE: brutality repeating itself in spells in Nagaland From Previous issue AFSPA and Nagaland: The Short History The first killing was a pastor who was burnt alive in a Mission compound in Kohima district the capital of Nagaland. AFSPA was a replica of the Rowlatt Act 1919, the infamous Act, because the whole of India was against it. The day AFSPA was imposed, many people irrespective of age, gender were tortured to severe degrees. Many women were molested and raped. Many villages were razed to ashes. Not one single Naga village could escape. Many children were born in the jungle because pregnant mothers had to run to jungle for their safety from the armies. A rape victim’s voice February 24, 1957, “Tell it my son, tell it to the world, so that our pain and our humiliation would not have been in vain.” Mayangkokla of Ungma village, Mokokchung. There are hundreds and thousands of Naga women who had all experienced similar stories. But they had to shoulder their burden all alone, all their lives. For instance the victims of Yankeli Baptist church mass rape both young and old, twenty four victims of Cheswezouma village and the Changtonyia or Oinan. The list is endless. Some of the victims were minor below the age of ten years and some were above sixties. Some committed suicide like Rose Tangkhul because they could not live with humiliation. In Wokha district a village by the name Yenli, four women were raped inside the church. The army regard themselves as the champion of the human rights but they allow their men to commit such horrendous crimes. Therefore, the United Nations and all of India especially the people who fight for the democratic rights need to open their eyes. As you stepped in to Nagaland, one will notice, “Friends of the Hill People” written at the air force gate and near the army cantonment area in the heart of Kohima town or anywhere
else in Nagaland. But had they really been the friends of the hill people will they stoop so low to kill and torture people just on mere ground of suspicion. Hundreds of Naga people have been killed and brutalised by the armed personnel’s just on mere grounds of suspicion. The current heart wrenching incident of Oting village at Mon is not different from any of the sordid incident which we don’t want to penned down. But the story has to be retold again and again! AFSPA, is considered as a colonial replica that has no place in any civilised nation even at the worst of times. It is regarded as an alien government steadfast to quell the rebellion by any means. G.B. Pant the then Home Minister introduced the Bill in the Lok Sabah on August 11, 1958, stating that the Army had to be recalled in the Naga Hills. But in reality, “it only provides for the protection of the Army when it has to deal with hostile Nagas.” Military excesses have been committed since India got Independence and its tentacles are still there and encroaching the rights of the North East people. It has not stopped. Take the case of Auranachal in 2021, AFSPA has been imposed in 3 districts, i.e, Changlang, Longdind and Tirap districts declaring it as ‘Disturbed Areas’. Also the same with Assam and Manipur, except Imphal Municipal Council Area, is not without AFSPA. This Act it is nothing but attack on the federal structure of the country.” Impunity and militarism has been institutionalised in the North East. For the indigenous people of the North East militarisation has been internalised part and system of the daily lives. Asian indigenous Peoples Act (AIPP) in its foundations in their report titled, “Indigenous Peoples Human Rights Challenges North East India 2015,” has observed this. The AIPP report stated that seventy years of military and paramilitary presence in the North East
has “escalated discontentment and institutionalised impunity and militarism”. AIPP in its report also raised about “questionable power” enabled to security forces by the AFSPA. And sadly it is still continuing It goes far against Article 21 of the constitution which says that no person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to procedure established by law. But AFSPA ‘license to kill’, depicts another picture where any person can be deprived of his life by any commissioned officer, he can shoot!! It’s ridiculous. Naushir Bharucha, a brilliant Mumbai lawyer in his speech (Lok Sabha August 11, 1958) remarked, “I also want to know whether the policy of shoot to kill underlying this Bill will not a have a psychological effect, first on the Nagas and secondly on the Army personnel shoot to kill instills in the people in whose hands power is placed a sense of carelessness and callousness. There is a feeling: We are protected, we can shoot to kill. I am not for a moment alleging that our defense forces are so callous as that. But human nature being what it is, having regard to the fact that our Army may have to work in very difficult and trying circumstances wherever they are, troops may be overworked and they may resort to these because a psychological impression is created in the minds of the troops: we can shoot to kill; nobody can question us. I ask: what type of policy is this to win the hearts of the people whom you are trying to incorporate and integrate as part of India. Shoot to kill.” On the same line L. Achaw Singh of Manipur said: “I fail to understand why the military authorities are to be invested with special powers. I have found that these military have always committed excesses in many cases especially in the sub-division of Kohima and Mokokchung. In such a situation I do not like that the officers should be invested with special powers.
Recently, such an incident took place in the headquarters of the North Cachar and Mikir Hills districts. Instead of rounding the hostile Nagas, some military personnel trespassed into the house of some retired tribal official and committed rape on the widow. So, such things have deteriorated the situation. The tribal people have risen against the military people there. It is therefore, dangerous to invest the military powers of killing and of arrest without warrant and of house breaking. ” I have got reports of the operations of the armed forces in these tribal subdivisions of Manipur, especially in the subdivision of Tamenglong where these armed forces have by force occupied the religious institutions in spite of the protests of the local people. Most of them are Christians there and they hold their churches sacred. But these armed forces would occupy these institutions. There are schools, and the armed forces could easily occupy them, but then, in spite of the protests of the people, they encroached upon, and trespassed into the house.” Rungoung Suisa from Outer Manipur (Reserved Scheduled Tribes) said much of the same thing. “A soldier is trained in the art of killing and destruction. He cannot appreciate the yearning of the human soul. As soon as he finds a colleague of his killed, his anxiety is to kill other people, whether they belong to the rebel party or not. So, we have to learn one lesson from the past actions. I wonder whether any people in the world, have suffered more than the Nagas. But are they kneeling down. They are suppressed. Physically you may suppress them and eliminate them. But the problem will remain there. It will be in their hearts.” Atrocities still continuing December 4, 2021 Oting village, Mon district of Nagaland, death toll has reached 14 and many more seriously injured, the excess committed by the Security Forces laid as ambush on the
ground of mere suspicion, taking the local people as militants who were coming back home for weekend on pickup trucks from the coal mining place, Tiru. On April 6th April, 2015 a thirteen year girl old girl was raped. Her mother (35) and grandmother (55) was molested by the jawans as they tried to rescue the teenager in the village Sarthe Tokbi, a village under the Dokmoka police station, 80 km South-West of Diphu, the Karbi Anglong district headquarters. The Karbis are the main tribal group of the West district of Assam, Karbi Anglong, administered under the provisions of the Constitution’s Sixth Schedule. The village level worker was also roughed up by the soldiers. To add fuel to the fire, the police opened fire to the demonstrators when the citizens and school children were staging protest against the rape of the minor and molestation of women. Here, again eight persons were injured, according to the report of Pankay Teron, an official of the Karbi, Human Rights Watch. Though protest have been going on so far none of the jawans have been arrested. The reason the police gave was because of AFSPA protection. The victims have been threatened and pressurised to withdraw their complaints. Is this not an absurd claim? The AFSPA giving the army the authority to rape and torture women. AFSPA is serving as a virtual ‘license to rape’ too. Twisting the story, the Army and the Ministry of Defence is seeking to distract the anti rape agitation, stating that prosecution of the guilty armies will be taken care of by them. To make the claim more suspicious again, the army’s latest claim is that “rapist jawan” had committed suicide. Here the suicide inside the army camp should be treated as a suspicious death, because the victims have not been given the chance to identify the perpetrators. All these twist and turns shows the local public are at the mercy of the armed forces and the
insensitive attitude of the army. The Justice Verma Committee had observed that, “Systematic or isolated sexual violence, in the process of Internal Security duties, is being legitimised by the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, which is in force in large parts of our country.” Things to take into Account • Treat people with dignity. Treat others as you would like to be treated. • Respect the human rights of every individual. Any other attitude or behavior will diminish one’s personality and stature. • The armed personnel at all levels should be sensitized to human rights through basic as well as in service trainings. • The armed personnel wherever they are posted should have sympathy and compassion of the local areas. • Repeal AFSPA! Ensure justice! Imposition of the Disturbed Areas Act be withdrawn. So as to end militirisation of the region and justice be provided to victims of sexual violence by military and paramilitary forces as pet the guidelines of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325. • More importantly, it is to be ensured that human rights are protected at the level of enforcement and any violation should be viewed seriously. Conclusion It is only by the police forces and the armed forces respecting the human rights of every individual, in all circumstances, that they will be able to regain the credibility and trust of the common people. No armed forces can triumph and succeed in its assigned task, without total cooperation and trust of the common people living in the area in which they are deployed. Kuknalim! (Concluded...) Farmers to meet today to decide future course
NEW DELHI, DEC 7 ( AGENCIES): The protesting farmer unions on Tuesday said they are “apprehensive” about the Centre’s response to their six pending demands and will hold a meeting on December 8 to decide the future course of the agitation, reports Times of Inida. Earlier on Tuesday, Samyukta Kisan Morcha, the umbrella body of farmer unions, held a meeting to discuss the Centre’s response and said that some pending issues still remain. “We have sent a few suggestions and objections on the government’s proposal on our pending demands,” the SKM said after the meeting. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait said that while the Centre has agreed to meet the demands of the farmers, the contours of the proposal are not yet clear. “We have our apprehensions which will be discussed tomorrow at 2pm

dra Modi last month announced the repeal of the three contentious laws. The primary demand of the farmers was a legal guarantee to ensure Minimum Support Price (MSP) system. The farmers also demanded withdrawal of Electricity Amendment Bill, removal of the penalty
section from the Air Pollution Bill, arrest and removal of Union minister of state for home Ajay Misra Teni, withdrawal of “fake” cases registered against the farmers, rehabilitation of the kin of martyred farmers, and a memorial for the martyred farmers. In its letter to the farmer unions, the Centre has
agreed to form a committee to discuss the MSP issue and said it will have representations from the SKM. The Centre also said that UP and Haryana governments will withdraw all cases against the farmers after they call off their protest. It said that both states have also in principle agreed to provide compensation to the kin of farmers who died during the protests. Thousands of farmers have been protesting against the three farm laws at the various border points of Delhi for over a year now. Last month, PM Modi announced that the government will repeal the three laws as it failed to convince a certain section of the farmers. The bill to repeal the laws was later cleared by Parliament and approved by the President. However, the farmers had said they will call off the protest only when the Centre gives them assurances on their pending demands.
Elgar Parishad case: SC rejects NIA’s plea against bail to Sudha Bharadwaj
NEW DELHI, DEC 7 (PTI): The Supreme Court Tuesday dismissed the National Investigation Agency’s appeal challenging the Bombay High Court order granting default bail to lawyer-activist Sudha Bharadwaj in the Elgar ParishadMaoist links case. “We see no reason to interfere with the high court order,” said a bench of Justices U U lalit, S Ravindra Bhat and Bela M Trivedi, refusing to consider the submissions raised by the NIA which had moved the apex court against the December 1 order. Bharadwaj was arrested in the Elgar ParishadMaoist links case in August 2018 under the provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The top cour t had agreed on Monday to accord urgent hearing to the NIA plea challenging the Bombay High Court order granting default bail to Bharadwaj. The activist lawyer,
Sudha Bharadwaj accused of hatching conspiracy to overthrow the Union government, was entitled to bail and its denial would be in breach of her fundamental right to life and personal liberty guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution, the high court had said. It had directed that Bharadwaj, lodged in the Byculla women’s prison, be produced before the Mumbai special NIA court on December 8, and conditions of her bail and date of release be decided. Bharadwaj is the first among 16 activists and academicians arrested in the case to have been granted
default bail. Poet-activist Varavara Rao is currently on medical bail. Jesuit priest Stan Swamy died in a private hospital here on July 5 this year while waiting for medical bail. The others are in custody as undertrials. The high court had rejected the default bail plea filed by eight other coaccused in the case -- Sudhir Dhawale, Varavara Rao, Rona Wilson, Surendra Gadling, Shoma Sen, Mahesh Raut, Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira. The case relates to alleged inflammatory speeches delivered at the Elgar Parishad conclave, held at Shaniwarwada in Pune on December 31, 2017, which the police claimed triggered violence the next day near the Koregaon-Bhima war memorial located on the city’s outskirts. The Pune police had claimed the conclave was backed by Maoists. The probe in the case was later transferred to the NIA.
JNUSU vice president demands Four detained for attacking missionary school in MP reconstruction of Babri Masjid
JNUSU leaders condemning Babri Masjid demolition. NEW DELHI, DEC 7 (PTI): Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) vice president Saket Moon has raised the demand for reconstruction of the Babri Masjid during a protest by the students’ body. However, an office bearer of the JNUSU maintained distance from Moon’s comments. The JNUSU had organised a harmony march on Monday night to commemorate the demolition
of the Babri Masjid and the death anniversary of B R Ambedkar. In a purported video, Moon can be heard saying, “...Compensation has to be awarded. It has to be accepted that the demolition of Babri Masjid was wrong and it should be reconstructed.” Satish Chandra Yadav, general secretary of JNUSU, said, “The JNUSU did not raise the demand. He had talked about how the court has accepted that
the demolition of Babri Masjid was wrong and had said that it should be constructed again.” There was no immediate reaction from the varsity. The JNUSU had screened ‘Ram Ke Naam’ documentary on Saturday night despite the university administration’s apprehensions that “such an unauthorised activity may disturb communal harmony and peaceful environment” of the campus.
BHOPAL, DEC 7 (PTI): Police have detained four persons in connection with vandalism and ruckus allegedly created by activists of right-wing groups at a missionary school in Ganjbasoda town in Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha district the day before over the purported religious conversion of eight students to Christianity. Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra on Tuesday said the police are directed to ensure that such incidents are not repeated. Police on Monday registered a case of rioting against unidentified persons after the incident which occurred on the premises of Saint Joseph School in Ganjbasoda, some 105 km from Bhopal, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The education institute had denied the charge of religious conversion. “The type and nature of Ganjbasoda incident is different. Four persons

ENGLISH BAZAR (WB), DEC 7 (PTI): A purported photo of a TMC leader posing with a gun in a government office in West Bengal’s Malda district went viral on social media, triggering a political furore on Tuesday. In the purported photo, Mrinalini Mondal Maity, the president of Old Malda Panchayat Samiti, was seen posing with the gun in one of her hands while being on her official chair. Maity is also the president of the district unit of TMC women’s wing. Hitting out at the TMC, the BJP alleged that the ruling party has turned the state into a dump yard of explosives. “If she
is searched, police will also get bombs and rifles. This is TMC’s culture. Police are not doing anything out of fear of losing their jobs,” said BJP district president Gobinda Chandra Mondal. The TMC, however, said that the police would look into the matter. “One cannot play with a gun while sitting on an official chair. Police will investigate if it is a real gun or a toy pistol. But, what I could gather from the photo, it is a real gun. The party’s image has been dented because of such an incident,” said TMC state general secretary Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury.

NSF further reiterated its earlier directive that all its federating units and subordinate bodies should sever ties with Indian paramilitar y or armed forces until complete justice was done in the Oting massacre. M e a n w h i l e, N S F appreciated the humane gesture shown towards the victims of Oting massacre by the State government by cancelling all cultural events and festivities in the remaining days of Hornbill Festival. (From p-1) Interlocutor and Governor announced that “talks have concluded”; the State Government and NSCN(I-M) did not want solution to be implemented. “Had the solution been implemented, the dastardly incident affecting scores of families would not have happened,” he said. NPCC president demanded that the stakeholders’ views be considered more seriously “lest more of our sons lose their lives.” Meanwhile, Therie said the Congress party has put up a demand to the Prime Minister for justice to the victims and compensation of Rs.1 crore to the deceased, Rs.10 lakh to the injured and adequate compensation for properties damaged.
(From p-1) The federation reasoned that this was to ensure that justice was not hindered due to lacunas in the probe. While appreciating the swift action of the state government in setting up a Special Investigating Team (SIT) to probe the barbaric incident at Oting, NSF however expressed apprehension over the effectiveness of such a probe team. Noting that the State government headed by chief minister Neiphiu Rio had time and again been asserting that they were serious about repealing the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) that resonated well with Naga people, NSF demanded that this claim should be substantiated by convening a special Assembly session at the earliest to discuss the

settlement by respecting the wishes of the people sharing sovereign power and to establish a new relationship for an enduring and lasting relationship between government of India and the Nagas, they pointed out. The memorandum emphasised that leaders from mainland India must know that the Indian Army had been terrorising Naga people for more than six decades now. Mentioning that children and students were no exception in the eyes of the Indian Army, the memorandum alleged that school-going students were mercilessly shot dead and innocent students and public tortured by Assam Rifles in the past. Noting that political negotiation was on between government of India and Naga people and various agreements had been signed with Naga political groups (NPGs), the hoho leaders cautioned that as there was a peaceful atmosphere in Naga areas now, any policy that spoilt the atmosphere of trust and confidence would be dear. They therefore demanded that the AFSPA must be summarily repealed from “our land”.
dP-5856/21
(From p-1) Regretting the callous attitude of the Centre towards repeal of the infamous AFSPA 1958 from Naga areas despite repeated appeals by Naga civil society and human rights activists, they pointed out that the hoho alone had submitted various representations and issued statements not less than 20 times in the past for repealing AFSPA. In return, they lamented that successive governments, irrespective of political affiliations, always remained a mute spectator ever since the enactment of the draconian law. They asserted that there was no space for such draconian laws in any civilised society and did not expect it from the largest democratic country. They also pointed out that the Nagas’ struggle for self-determination could not be equated with “terrorism” or “secessionism” as government of India had recognised the uniqueness of Naga political history and the universal principle that in a democracy, sovereignty lay with the people. Over and above, both government of India and Naga people agreed to a

Biden to tell Putin he’ll face toughest sanctions yet if he invades Ukraine
WASHINGTON/MOSCOW, DEC 7 (AGENCIES): U.S. President Joe Biden will tell Russian President Vladimir Putin in a video conference later on Tuesday that Russia and its banks could be hit with the toughest economic sanctions yet if it invades Ukraine, U.S. officials said. They said the sanctions, which one source said could target Russia’s biggest banks and Moscow’s ability to convert roubles into dollars and other currencies, were designed to dissuade Putin from using tens of thousands of troops massed near the Ukrainian border to attack its southern neighbour. The Kremlin, which said before the meeting it did not expect any breakthroughs, has denied harbouring such intentions and has said its troop posture is defensive. But it has also said it is increasingly vexed by Western military aid to Ukraine and what it calls creeping NATO expansion.

It has likewise queried Ukrainian intentions and said it wants guarantees that Kyiv will not use force to try to retake territory lost in 2014 to Russia-backed separatists, a scenario Ukraine has ruled out. “We’re looking for good, predictable relations with the United States. Russia never intended to attack anyone, but we have our concerns and we have our red lines,” said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2021
Calling for everyone to keep “a cool head”, Peskov said it was vital that Putin and Biden speak given what he called the extraordinary escalation of tensions in Europe. The Russian rouble weakened slightly on Tuesday, with some market analysts predicting the talks would de-escalate tensions and others saying that the U.S. sanctions threat eroded hopes of finding common ground. Ahead of his first direct talks with Putin since
July, Biden on Monday discussed the sanctions plan with European allies, seeking a strong joint stance in support of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. He spoke to French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. They called on Russia to de-escalate tensions and return to diplomacy and said their teams would stay in close touch, including in consultation with NATO allies and EU partners, on a “coordinated and comprehensive approach,” the White House said. Biden’s team has identified a set of economic penalties to impose should Russia launch an invasion, a senior Biden administration official said. A separate source familiar with the situation said targeting Putin’s inner circle has been discussed but no decision made.
Kremlin expects no breakthrough at Putin-Biden talks M O S C O W, D E C 7 (AGENCIES): The Kremlin said it expected no breakthrough later on Tuesday at virtual talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Joe Biden over Ukraine, but urged people to remain calm despite mounting tensions. Biden and Putin are expected to hold a video conference at around 1500 GMT amid Western fears about a Russian troop buildup near Ukraine. Biden plans to warn Putin of severe economic consequences if Russia invades, U.S. officials said on Monday. Russia has denied it plans to attack Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday that Moscow regretted what he called the White House’s predictable tendency to resort to sanctions, but said that Putin was ready to hear out Biden’s concerns and that the Kremlin leader wanted to set out his own. “There’s no need to expect any breakthroughs from this conversation. It is a working conversation at a very difficult period,” Peskov said.
FS Shringla calls on Bangladesh FM; reviews growing bilateral cooperation DHAKA, DEC 7 (PTI): Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Tuesday called on Bangladesh Foreign Minister A K Abdul Momen during which they reviewed the wide-ranging and growing cooperation between the two countries, including cooperation in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic. Shringla, who arrived here on a two-day official visit to review the wideranging cooperation between the two neighbours, also met his counterpart Masud Bin Momen and discussed progress in bilateral ties on all fronts. “Foreign Secretary @ harshvshringla called on FM H.E. Earlier, Shringla was received by the Bangladesh Foreign Secretary upon arrival at the airport in the capital. He is scheduled to call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday. Shringla is also expected to meet the Road Transport and Bridges Minister and ruling Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
The visit to Bangladesh will provide an opportunity to review the wide-ranging cooperation between the two countries, said an Indian External Affairs Ministry statement in New Delhi. The visit will also help prepare the ground for the state visit of President Ram Nath Kovind to Bangladesh from December 15 to 17, it added. India and Bangladesh observed ‘Maitri Diwas’ on Monday, marking India recognising the newly-formed country of Bangladesh in 1971. The day was celebrated across 18 countries.

LONDON, DEC 7 (PTI): Any travellers arriving in the UK from overseas, including India, have to take a COVID-19 pre-departure test no sooner than 48 hours before their journey, under new rules in force from Tuesday aimed at slowing the spread of the Omicron variant. Any contacts of a suspected Omicron case are already required to self-isolate for 10 days, including those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Additionally, British and Irish citizens returning
from the UK’s red list travel ban countries – Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe – are required to hotel quarantine in a government-approved facility as the UK recorded 336 cases of the variant first detected in South Africa. UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid confirmed community transmission of the highly transmissible COVID variant in a House of Commons statement on Monday. He also noted that no one
who has tested positive with Omicron has been hospitalised, so far. “The number of confirmed cases in the UK is 336 – they are all by definition infected. 50 yrs of India-B’desh ties a ‘precious achievement’: top Singaporean diplomat SINGAPORE, DEC 7 (PTI): If all countries can live in harmony with their neighbours, it would be a major contribution towards peace, a top Singaporean diplomat here has said while lauding India and Bangladesh for having 50 years of good bilateral relations, which he said was a “precious achievement” worthy of celebration. ‘Maitri Diwas’ was observed on Monday to mark India recognising the newlyformed country Bangladesh in 1971. The day was celebrated across 18 countries. “Singapore has a very good relation with both Bangladesh and India. So, we are happy to join in this celebration,” Singapore’s Ambassador-at-Large Tommy Koh said at an event held at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hall here on Monday to mark the occasion. “Bangladesh and India are neighbours. We should celebrate the fact that these two neighbours have enjoyed 50 years of good relations. This is a precious
achievement,” he said. A lot of trouble in the world is caused by conflict and quarrels between neighbouring countries. If all countries can live in harmony with their neighbours, it would be a major contribution towards peace, Koh said at the programme organised jointly by the high commissions of India and Bangladesh here. The top diplomat recalled that in 1971, on his return from UN posting, he had helped the United Nations Association of Singapore raise money for the refugees from the then East Pakistan. “We succeeded in raising a substantial amount of money. I was surprised to see one of our famous philanthropists giving me a bundle of cash saying this is for refugees. The people of Singapore felt for the people of East Pakistan and empathised with them,” he said. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh in March to attend the country’s national
day, it was decided to commemorate December 6 as ‘Maitri Diwas (Friendship Day)’. Ten days before the liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan, India had recognised Bangladesh on December 6, 1971. India was one of the first countries to establish bilateral diplomatic ties with Bangladesh. Koh noted that one of the things that unite the people of the two countries is the Bengali language, literature and songs. It is truly remarkable that the national anthems of both Bangladesh and India were composed by the same person -- Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. “Tagore won the Nobel Prize for literature at a time when India was not divided, so I can say he belonged to both Bangladesh and India,” Koh said. Appreciating that the event was organised at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hall, he said Gandhi was his childhood hero and his teachings continue to inspire people around the world.

Iraqi security forces inspect the site of an explosion in Basra, Iraq December 7. (Reuters)
Explosions have been rare in Basra in recent years, particularly since the defeat of the Sunni militant Islamic State group in 2017. The oil-rich Basra is predominantly Shiite. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion. There has been an increase in political instability in Iraq following the Oct 10 parliament elections which saw Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr emerge as the biggest winner. Shiite armed factions loyal to Iran which lost around two thirds of their parliamentary seats have rejected the results of the election, alleging fraud.

Study Finds Delta Somewhat Resistant ABBA sue ‘parasitic’ tribute to Vaccines — What About Omicron? act for trademark infringement
L
ab studies show that the mutations found in COVID-19’s Delta variant make the virus more resistant to existing vaccines, a potentially ominous development as the new Omicron variant starts to wend its way around the world. Full vaccination with the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines still produces enough antibodies to neutralize Delta, British researchers found. But the Delta variant put up a stronger fight against antibody protection than earlier versions of COVID-19. “A s O m i c r o n h a s multiple mutations, some of which are in the same areas of the viral surface protein as the Delta variant, we would expect the Omicron variant to have reduced sensitivity to neutralization,” said senior researcher Brian Willett, a professor of viral immunology with the MRC-University of Glasgow Center for Virus Research in Scotland. For this study, the researchers analyzed blood samples collected from
healthy people who had received either the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccine. The AstraZeneca shot is approved for use in the United Kingdom but not in the United States. The samples came from 156 people who had received either the full two-dose course of either vaccine, or just got one dose. The researchers exposed the blood samples to different COVID-19 variants to see how effectively vaccineproduced antibodies would fight off each coronavirus strain. The vaccines provided protection against all COVID-19 variants, but
the investigators noted that antibodies struggled more to stop them. I n p a r t i c u l a r, t h e Delta variant caused a fourfold reduction in the immune response of people who got the Pfizer vaccine and a fivefold reduction in AstraZeneca vaccine recipients. “The positive news is that all of the variants tested were neutralized by the (antibodies) from the vaccinated individuals, so we would predict that i m mu n i t y e l i c i t e d b y vaccination with two doses of the existing vaccines would extend to the variants,” Willett said. “However, it may not be as effective as it
was against the viruses circulating previously, i.e., the virus of the first wave or the subsequent Alpha variant,” he continued. “Similarly, as antibody responses to coronaviruses w a n e o ve r t i m e, t h e duration of immunity may be shortened. Hence, this is why boosters are now being offered in the U.K. after a three-month gap rather than the initial, advised six-month gap.” The United States now makes booster doses available to people who got the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine at least six months after finishing their twodose series, or at least two months after getting the Johnson & Johnson singledose shot. The U.K. lab results are not entirely surprising given what we’ve learned about COVID-19 variants, said Dr. William Schaffner, medical director of the Bethesda, Md.-based National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. “ W i t h t h e accumulation of mutations, you can get some reduction in effectiveness of our current vaccines. That’s
the general principle,” Schaffner said. “It’s not a shock, but here it’s been demonstrated, and we think it is likely it will a p p ly t o O m i c r o n a s well, particularly since Omicron has even more mutations related to the spike protein.” T h e g o o d n ew s, Schaffner said, is that there is partial protection and he anticipates that with Omicron as well. People concer ned about either Delta or Omicron should get fully va c c i n a t e d a n d t h e n boosted for maximum protection, Schaffner and Willett said. “ B y b o o s t i n g, we i n c r e a s e t h e l eve l o f antibodies in circulation to a high level and this should provide a degree of cross-protective immunity against not only the vaccine strain — the first wave virus — but also the variants such as Delta,” Willett said. The findings were published online Dec. 2 in the journal PLOS Pathogens. By Dennis Thompson HealthDay Reporter

BBA have sued the UK tribute act ABBA MANIA for trademark infringement. In a suit filed on Friday (December 3), the Swedish icons described the cover band’s behaviour as “parasitic and bad-faith”. They claimed the tribute band are intentionally misleading fans into believing that they are endorsed by the real group. “Defendants include the term ‘official’ and ‘original’ in many of their marketing materials, website pages, and social media handles,” the suit reads (via Billboard), “which gives consumers the impression that there is some kind of association, affiliation, or sponsorship between ABBA and ABBA MANIA”. It’s said in the lawsuit that ABBA gave ABBA MANIA the opportunity to change their name but they turned down the offer. “In an attempt to amicably resolve this dispute, [ABBA] explained how defendants could properly use the phrase ‘ABBA Tribute’ in a nonconfusing manner to
describe their tribute act so long as the actual name of the tribute act did not include the word ABBA,” the suit adds. “But Defendants refused to comply and cease use of the name ABBA MANIA.” A B BA M A N I A – billed as “the original tribute from London’s West End” – describe their live show as a “highly polished and professional production”. They have upcoming dates scheduled for Neath in Wales as well as Manchester and Lytham. ABBA returned with their first album in 40 years, ‘Voyage’, last month. It went to Number One in the
UK and became the fastestselling vinyl of the century. The record features the recent Christmas single ‘Little Things’. The legendary quartet will showcase ‘Voyage’ at a string of “revolutionary” c o n c e r t s a t L o n d o n’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in 2022. Earlier this year, the event’s producers spoke to NME about what to expect from the “magical space circus”. The spectacle was put together by former Klaxons member James Righton and features Little Boots (a self-confessed ABBA “mega-fan”) in its cast of live musicians. A dazzling official trailer arrived last month. (NME)

r a k e h a s withdrawn his two 2022 Grammy nominations, a rep for the Recording Academy has confirmed to ‘Variety’. D r a k e ’s r e p d i d n o t immediately respond to requests for comment. Sources told ‘Variety’ the decision was made by Drake and his management and the Grammys honoured the request, although his motivation was unclear at the time of the publication of this news story. Drake was one of five nominees for Best Rap Album, for ‘Certified Lover Boy’, and for Best Rap Performance, for his song ‘Way 2 Sexy’ (featuring Future and Young Thug). Some have speculated
that Drake’s decision might have something to do with him being named in lawsuits surrounding the tragedy at the Astroworld festival in Houston last month, where 10 people died when the crowd rampaged during headliner Travis Scott’s set, which featured a guest appearance from Drake. The rapper, though, is scheduled to perform with Kanye West at the ‘Free Larry Hoover’ benefit concert in Los Angeles o n T h u r s d ay, s o t h a t explanation feels unlikely, according to ‘Variety’. S researchers have found that impotence pill Viagra may help prevent as well as treat Alzheimer’s disease. Sildenafil, approved by the US Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) for erectile dysfunction (Viagra), is associated with 69 per cent reduced incidence of Alzheimer’s disease, according to the findings published in the journal Nature Aging. A team from Cleveland Clinic analysed a database of more than 7 million patients, and used computational methodology to screen and validate over 1,600 FDAapproved drugs as potential therapies for Alzheimer’s. The buildup of beta amyloid and tau proteins in the brain leads to
amyloid plaques and tau neurofibrillary tangles -- two hallmarks of Alzheimer’s-related brain changes. The team pinpointed drugs that target both amyloid and tau as having higher scores compared to drugs that target just one or the other. “Sildenafil, which has been shown to significantly improve cognition and memory in preclinical models, presented as the best dr ug candidate,” said Feixiong Cheng, from Cleveland Clinic’s Genomic Medicine Institute. Further, the analysis included patients using comparator dr ugs that either were in an active Alzheimer’s clinical trial (losartan or metformin) or were not yet reported
as relevant to the disease (diltiazem or glimepiride). They found that sildenafil users were 69 per cent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than non-sildenafil users after 6 years of follow-up. Specifically, sildenafil had a 55 per cent reduced risk of the disease compared to losartan, 63 per cent
compared to metformin, 65 per cent compared to diltiazem and 64 per cent compared to glimepiride. “ N o t a b l y, w e found that sildenafil use reduced the likelihood o f A l z h e i m e r ’s i n individuals with coronary artery disease, hyper tension and Type-2 diabetes, all of which are comorbidities significantly associated with risk of the disease, as well as in those without,” Cheng said. The researchers also developed an Alzheimer’s patient-derived brain cell model using stem cells. In the model, they found that sildenafil increased brain cell growth and decreased hyper phosphor ylation of tau proteins -- a
hallmark which leads to neurofibrillary tangles --, offering biological insights into how sildenafil may influence disease-related brain changes. “Because our findings only establish an association between sildenafil use and reduced incidence of Alzheimer’s d i s e a s e, we a r e n ow planning a mechanistic trial and a phase II randomised clinical trial to test causality and confirm sildenafil’s clinical benefits for Alzheimer’s patients,” said Cheng. “We also foresee our approach being applied to other neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, to accelerate the drug discovery process.” (IANS)

Djokovic named in Serbia team for 2022 ATP Cup in Sydney
SYDNEY, DEC 7 (REUTERS): Novak Djokovic was named in Serbia’s team for the men’s season-opening ATP Cup in January in Sydney, although the world number one has yet to commit to the Australian Open following the organisers’ mandate for COVID-19 vaccinations. Djokovic, who has won a record nine titles at Melbourne Park including the last three, has repeatedly declined to reveal whether he has been vaccinated against COVID-19, with Australian Open organisers Tennis Australia confirming that all players would have to be vaccinated to compete in Melbourne. To play without being vaccinated in Sydney, the capital of New South Wales state, the state government would have to apply for an exemption for Djokovic and the 34-year-old would have to undergo 14 days quarantine upon arrival. That same option was also open to Australian Open organisers but the government in Victoria, of which Melbourne is the capital, has said it would not
apply for exemptions. The draw for the third edition of the ATP Cup team event was held in Sydney on Tuesday and organisers said top seed Serbia, headlined by Djokovic, would be in Group A along with Norway, Chile and Spain. While Djokovic’s participation will be a huge boost for Serbia and the tournament, Rafael Nadal will not feature for Spain. The 20-times major champion struggled with back issues at the start of 2021 before pulling out of Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics with a foot problem. The 35-year-old Spaniard, who last played in August at the Citi Open, is aiming to return at an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi this month before playing another tournament in his buildup to the Australian Open. The 2022 ATP Cup will feature 16 teams and be hosted across two venues at the Sydney Olympic Park from Jan. 1-9 with the players vying for $10 million in prize money.
