Ahead of Amit Shah’s Assam visit, NE groups warn of anti-CAA stir
A file photo of Amit Shah addressing a public rally.
GUWAHATI, MAY 8 (IANS): Ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s three-day Assam visit, various organisations in the northeast have once again threatened to restart their agitations against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) if the Centre tried to implement it in the region. Shah, who was scheduled to arrive in Guwahati late Sunday night, would attend at least eight different events on Monday and Tuesday, coinciding with completion of one year of the Bharatiya Janata Partyled second government in Assam, headed by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was sworn in on May 10 last year. The All Assam Students’ Union, the Raijor Dal, a political party headed by Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad in Assam, and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in Meghalaya announced to resume their agitations against the CAA after Shah on Thursday announced in West Bengal that the gov-
ernment would implement the CAA as soon as the Covid-19 pandemic ends. KSU President Lambokstar Marngar said in Shillong that any attempt to implement the CAA would provoke unrest in the hill state. “The Centre, instead, responding the Meghalaya Assembly’s unanimous resolution and demands of all most all political parties, should extend the InnerLine Permit system, an 1873 regulation, in the entire Meghalaya to curb the entry of illegal immigrants,” Marngar told the media. The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO), an umbrella body of more than 17 organisations, has been spearheading the agitation since 2019 for the introduction of ILP in the remaining parts of the state. If the ILP is enforced in the entire Meghalaya, like in four other northeastern states -- Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur, the state would keep itself out of the purview of the CAA. Gogoi said that the
people of Assam would never accept this “anti-people” law. Gogoi, who is also the President of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, said that the BJP should realise that all sections of people are against the CAA as this is an anti-people law. He had spearheaded the massive protests against the contentious citizenship law in Assam since 2019 and was arrested in connection with violent protests in the state in 2019 and was charged under the stringent anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The Central government had earlier announced that the CAA would not apply to the ILP and the Tribal Autonomous District Council (TADC) areas. In the North Eastern states, there are 10 TADCs, constituted under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. While Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram have three TADCs each, Tripura has one. All the eight North Eastern states and neighbouring West Bengal witnessed violent protests in 2019 end and early in 2021 against the CAA, which seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslims minorities -- Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians, who have migrated from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014, after facing faith-based persecution. At least five people were killed in Assam in police firing and clashes during the violent agitation.

NDPP-BJP cautious on 40:20 seat sharing for 2023 assembly polls Staff Reporter
D I M A P U R , M AY 8 (NPN): Seat sharing between NDPP and BJP agreed in 2018 under 40 (NDPP) and 20 (BJP) is being contested in the light of the April 29 merger of 21 NPF (out of 25) with NDPP (21 MLAs). With 21 (NDPP)+21 (NPF), the NDPP has 42 MLAs and the NDPP also acknowledges two Independent MLAs as its own. Thus, ticket aspirants for NDDP presently is 44 seats for 2023 Assembly elections. As part of seat sharing, NDPP can claim 40 seats out of 44. That would leave out four sitting MLAs. Such a situation is not acceptable to majority of the present NDPP who want to fight the election on the basis of ground reality. State chief minister
Neiphiu Rio continues to maintain that the alliance with BJP will continue and both parties will fight the 2023 elections together under a seat sharing formula. NDPP does not want to upset its alliance with BJP and has committed to maintain the 2018 seat sharing formula of 40:20 with BJP. However, since the decimation of NPF after 21 of its MLAs decamped and merged with NDPP, those in the ruling party do not see any challenger and want to win as many seats. This would mean putting up candidates in more than 45 constituencies in 2023. On the other hand, BJP which contested 20 seats in 2018 won 12 would like to maintain the same seat sharing arrangement for 2023. By that reckoning, BJP lays claim to eight seats. However, realising that
the deal could go either way, senior BJP sources told Nagaland Post recently, that the party was even prepared to contest as many seats where its candidates have a very good chance of winning them. A senior party source even claimed that BJP is confident of winning at least 40 seats. A national vice president of the party had recently told a local media that the party would fight the 2023 assembly elections on the basis of having winnable candidates and which means setting up more than 20 candidates as per the seat sharing arrangement with NDPP. In the present 2018 assembly elections, NDPP and NPF fought each other in 39 constituencies (one being uncontested). In the 2018 election out of 39 seats which NDPP
contested against NPF (including other party candidates), NDPP won 17 and NPF won 19 seats. Party sources in NDPP said the party will also consider the winnability while deciding on party candidates for 2023. However, with merger the issue would be a difficult task. Some of the seats fiercely contested where the margin was below 100 were from the following constituencies: Under 56 Noklak constituency NPF sitting MLA and minister P. Longon lost by the narrowest of margin by 5 votes against H. Haiying of BJP. Under 30 Alongtaki constituency, state BJP president Temjen Ima Along won by a narrow margin of 86 votes against sitting NPF member Dr. Benjongliba. (Cont’d on p-8)
Asani intensifies into severe cyclonic storm NEW DELHI, MAY 8 (AGENCIES): Cyclone Asani, formed over southeast Bay of Bengal, further intensified into a severe cyclonic storm Sunday evening as it moved northwestwards in the direction of north Andhra PradeshOdisha coasts. The severe cyclone, on reaching west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts on Tuesday, is likely to recurve north-north eastwards and move towards northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast, the Indian Meteorological Department said. It is likely to lose some steam thereafter and turn
into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday and further into a deep depression on Thursday, the weather office said in its forecast of Asani’s
track and intensity. The cyclone is likely to bring in its wake light to moderate rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal from
Tuesday to Friday with heavy downpour at one or two places in the coastal districts of the state, the weather office said.
BJP will name presidential candidate with an eye on 2024 LS polls Mizoram: 25 more pigs
Some of the probable candidates Venkaiah Naidu, Arif Mohd Khan, Jagdish Mukhi and Tamilisai Soundararajan
NEW DELHI, MAY 8 (IANS): Amid all the speculations and names doing the rounds for its Presidential nominee, the BJP may nominate a candidate either belonging to the Other Backward Class (OBC) or a woman to win their support in the run-up to the 2024 general elections.
The OBC and women are the largest constituents of the country’s population. The names of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Kerala Governor Arif Mohd Khan, Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi, former Jharkhand Governor Drau-
padi Murmu, and Chhattisgarh Governor Anusuiya Uikey are being taken on the government side and of NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar among the opposition. If Pawar throws his hat in the ring, then he could emerge as a joint opposition
candidate, with his political experience- a three-time Maharashtra chief minister and Defence and Agriculture Minister at the Centre - and his relations across party lines, leaving the BJP on the backfoot. From Cong ress, it could be Meira Kumar, who has been a Union Minister and contested elections in the past too. On the government’s side, several names are doing the rounds, but with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s penchant for surprises - picking up Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind in 2017 - could be dis-played again. Kerala Governor Khan could be a choice to display
the government’s inclusive side, while he has been a vocal supporter of government policies on various issues. If the Modi government decides to field a sitting Governor as a candidate like in 2017, probables range from Chhattisgarh’s Uikey, to Soundararajan if it seeks to choose someone from the South, while Mukhi could be the pick if it seeks to gain ground in Delhi. However, there could be dark horse candidates as either side are keeping the cards close to their chest. BJP sources said that the party might nominate either an OBC or a woman for the post of President or go for a woman OBC candidate.
“Lots of names are doing the rounds and every name has its own weight, but it is important to con-solidate OBC and women votes by nominating a Presidential candidate from among them,” the sources said. A party insider said that among all the social equations, a Presidential candidate from the SC community is unlikely as current President Ram Nath Kovind belongs to the community. “It is most unlikely that a leader from the SC community will be given a chance this time. Among all, the OBC and women are most preferred right now for Presidential candidate,” he said.
This is it! What experts say about early signs of Covid in fully vaxed people
“Here arrest me, if you dare. I’m warning youact like a hero and you’ll become zero.” K Y M C
NEW DELHI, MAY 8 (AGENCIES): With several Asian countries, including India’s neighbour China going into lockdown to curb the drastically rising Covid-19 cases, the threat of a possible fourth wave of Covid infection doesn’t seem unreasonable. Meanwhile, India is also witnessing a slight but continuous uptick in the virus cases despite the major population being fully vaccinated against Covid. While the scientists and health experts have time and again warned against lowering
one’s guard and reiterated that new Covid variants capable of evading artificial immunity may emerge again, it is extremely important to watch out for any changes in the body in such times. According to a Norway study, which was conducted on 177 guests at a party during the Omicron breakout, there were eight key symptoms experienced by the group of fully vaccinated partygoers. The study, which was later published in Eurosurveillance, found that 66 had definitive cases of Covid-19
and 15 had possible cases of the virus. Of 111 participants, 89% had received two doses of an mRNA vaccine. Dominant symptoms of Covid in fully vaccinated people: Cough, runny nose, fatigue, sore throat, headache, muscle pain, fever and sneezing. As per the research, cough, runny nose
and fatigue were among the most common symptoms in the vaccinated individuals while sneezing and fever were least common. Although the vaccine protects against the more serious risks of the virus, it is still possible to contract Covid even if you have received both doses of Covid vaccines in addition to the booster jab. Health experts also suggest there are two distinct symptoms that could be a sign of positive Covid in fully-vaccinated individuals-- Fatigue and dizziness or fainting. However, this
fatigue is not like normal exertion and stress. In this, a person feels bodily pain by causing sore or weak muscles, headaches, and even blurry vision and loss of appetite. Meanwhile, dizziness or fainting is the second sign that you may have Covid, possibly Omicron. A new report from Germany has suggested that there is a link between fainting spells and Omicron after doctors in Berlin found that Covid was triggering recurrent fainting spells for a 35-year-old patient admitted to the hospital.
die,111 culled due to ASF
AIZAWL, MAY 8 (PTI): At least 25 more pigs died of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Mizoram on Sunday, an official said. The ASF has affected 31 villages in six districts of the state, he said. With the 25 deaths on Sunday, as many as 1,983 pigs have so far been killed since the fresh outbreak of the disease in February this year. At least 1,201 pigs have been culled during the same period, including 111 on Sunday, the official said. As many as 33,417 pigs have died due to the outbreak of ASF last year causing monetary losses to the tune of Rs 60.82 crore.
A total of 10,910 pigs have also been culled since last year to prevent the further spread of the disease. The highly contagious pig disease, which was reported for the first time in the state in March last year was initially considered more or less contained as no pig death due to the outbreak was reported since December. Besides Mizoram and Tripura, outbreak of ASF disease was also reported in Meghalaya and Assam. In Assam, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department on May 5 culled 70 infected pigs in Biswanath district.

The bridge was located on a strategic point, which connected the Chittagong and Dhaka and was the main supply line of food and other materials, he added. “At about 1400 hours, my East Pakistan Rifles (EPR) contact, Havildar Nuruddin came to Sreenagar BOP along with Prof. Obaidullah Majumdar, a member of the National Assembly and Dr. Amir Hussain, a Awami League leader and they told us about the terror let loose by the Pak army personnel on villagers including women and children and asked for immediate intervention to dislodge them”, Ghosh said.
However, Ghosh initially did not take any action, but promised would convey their requests to higher authorities. “They became highly sentimental and exerted emotional pressure on me. I took a cover name as Prof. Ali and accompanied them to investigate. The villagers came out to meet their leaders and raised slogan – Joi Bangabandhu, Joy Bangladesh. During that time came a burst of LMG fire from Pak soldiers, but there was no damage” , he said. “At about 5 pm in the afternoon the first group of Mukti Bahini with 6 EPR boys under the command of Havildar Nooruddin was formed. Manipur Congress to approach SC against CM’s controversial statement Correspondent
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein (middle) addressing the media. I TA NAG A R , M AY 8 (PTI): The Ar unachal Pradesh government has decided to build a state-ofthe-art museum to give due recognition to the unsung heroes of the state who have contributed immensely to the country’s freedom movement, an official statement said here on Sunday. The government is also planning to construct several memorials as part of its efforts to preserve and protect the existing war sites across the frontier state, the statement said. Besides, a proposal to make Arunachalee freedom fighters a part of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Museum would be forwarded to Gujarat, it said. According to the statement, a core committee that was formed by the government for suggesting ways to honour the unsung heroes of
the state took the decision to establish the museum and war memorials during a meeting at Namsai, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein. Mein said that the Centre’s ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ initiative to mark the country’s 75th year of Independence has provided Arunachal with a “good opportunity to write its own history”. He advocated the setting up of a research cell at Rajiv Gandhi University here for further study on the state’s glorious history and other aspects. It was also decided at the meeting that a 15-day festival would be held later this year to pay tribute to the freedom fighters, and theatre shows and other cultural activities would be organised as part of the event, the statement added.
IMPHAL, MAY 8: Manipur Congress on Sunday said that the opposition party will go to Supreme Court against a controversial statement given by state chief minister N Biren Singh at a recent function. In his address at a recent function, the chief minister stated that even though the MLAs spent crores of rupees in elections, they should not take bribes of any kind to regain the money they had spent. Reiterating his government’s zero tolerance against corruption, the chief minister added that to regain the money, the MLAs can engage in contract work under big companies implementing various developmental projects While stating this, he turned towards an MLA who is a cabinet minister in his council of ministers and asked how many crores of rupees he spent in the elections. The video of the chief minister’s speech went viral in social media even as media skipped the function as it was held during the period
N Biren Singh in which media houses in the state were boycotting news related to the state government, ministers and MLAs of the ruling parties. The opposition Congress strongly reacted to the statement of the chief minister and stated that the chief minister’s statement amounted to attracting legal action. Addressing a news conference at Imphal Congress Bhavan, MPCC spokesperson P Sharatchandra demanded that the state police department to lodge an FIR against the chief minister and BJP MLAs. He said that it was revealed from the chief minister’s statement that BJP had used muscle and money powers to win the recently concluded general elections to the state Assembly. They had violated the
ECI’s guideline on expenditure limit of Rs 28 lakh of a candidate and the candidates of the BJP have spent crores of rupees in their electioneering, he alleged. As the chief minister openly revealed the truth, the state police department should not delay in lodging a FIR case against the chief minister and BJP MLAs. If the state police department did not take up legal action, the Congress will knock at the Supreme Court door, the spokesperson said. The spokesperson further came down heavily on the chief minister for insisting the MLAs take sub-contract works from the big companies implementing developmental projects. MLAs are law makers. The people sent them to the Assembly to involve in law making and not to engage in contract works. “It is unfortunate that a chief minister is asking MLAs to engage in contract work,” he said, adding that as it was against the principles of Congress and Congress MLAs will stay away from following such uncivilized advice.
LPG price rise triggering fire in kitchen: AICC secretary AGARTALA, MAY 8 (PTI): All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Szarita Laitphlang on Sunday said that in view of the spiralling cooking gas cylinder price, the day is not far when women will have to bid adieu to LPG and go back to firewood for cooking. The price of LPG cylinder, which was Rs 410 Szarita Laitphlang in 2014, has shot up to Rs 999 with ‘zero subsidy’ in 2022 triggering fire in the
kitchens, she claimed. “In the past 45 days, the Modi government has hiked the LPG cylinder price by Rs 100. If this trend continues, the day is not far when the women will have to offer shraddhanjali to LPG cylinders and go back to old age method of cooking in firewood”, Laitphlang said during a press conference in Congress Bhavan. She said, “The petrol price has
already crossed three-digit mark while price of diesel and CNG are also going up. The poor people are the worst sufferers ...”. The AICC secretary claimed around 23 million BPL people have upgraded to APL status during UPA regime but under the BJP era, around 37 million people have been pushed towards BPL. The Congress leader sought the prime minister’s interven-
tion to arrest the spiralling price rise as it appears unbearable for the common people. Tr i p u r a P r a d e s h Congress president Birajit Sinha said the people of the state are still in dark about the Covid casualty referring to the WHO’s recent revelation that India’s Covid fatality stood at 47 lakh while the Centre claimed it was only 5.24 lakh.

BSF helped form the first Mukti Bahini group 51 years ago along Tripura border AGARTALA, MAY 8 (PTI): One of the lesser known facts of the Bangladesh liberation war is that India’s Border Security Force (BSF) help form the first group of Mukti Bahini or the Bangladesh Liberation Force a day after the Pakistani army unleashed a reign of terror in that country some 51 years ago along the Tripura border. Major P K Ghosh, who was then commanding four border outposts (BOP) of BSF at Sreenagar, Amlighat, Samarendraganj and Nalua in the southern part of Tripura bordering Chittagong division, in the then east Pakistan was instrumental in this. Major Ghosh, an octogenarian war hero, now settled in Delhi, when contacted, told PTI in detail about first crossing over the Indo-Pak border and formation of first Mukti Bahini group on March 26, 1971. On March 26, 1971 morning, Pakistan army sent an Infantry battalion from Comilla cantonment to Chittagong commanded by a Brigadier to counter the forces of Major Ziaur Rehaman and deployed 10-15 men for protection of Shubhapur Road Bridge,

in groups of 3 each, on either flank of northern end of Shubhapur bridge with clear instructions to deny entry of Pak soldiers in the village and water point and also to fire only one round at a time to conserve ammunitions and draw fire from Pak troops”, Ghosh said. Returning to the Srinagar BOP in the evening at about 7p, Ghosh prepared a special report on the situation without mentioning his crossing over the international border. “Next day (March 27) morning, Lt Col A K Ghose, my Commanding Officer (CO) visited our BOP and expressed his happiness and thanked me for my special report on the situation. I was hesitant, but as a loyal soldier disclosed that I had crossed over to Shubhapur yesterday. Suddenly the attitude of my CO changed, got angry and shouted at me – how could you dare to cross the international border? You might face court martial. He left in anger. I felt bad, but not sorry for my decision to stand by the ill-fated unarmed innocent civilians across the border”, Ghosh wrote in an article in BSF’s journal Border Men.

Bommai was appointed in exchange for money: Siddu
Siddaramaiah
BELAGAVI (K’TAKA) MAY 8 (PTI): Leader of Opposition in the Kar nataka Assembly Siddaramaiah on Sunday hit out at Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai alleging that he is not an elected CM, and was appointed to the coveted post in exchange for money. The allegation comes days after senior BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal’s claims that he was approached by some people, offering the state chief minister’s position, in exchange for Rs 2,500 crore. The Congress
Legislature Party (CLP) leader even alleged that Bommai is only following RSS’ instructions, as they have made him the chief minister. “Basavaraj Bommai is not an elected Chief Minister, he is an appointed Chief Minister, so he is not doing anything. He has given money and become Chief Minister, why will he work? RSS has made him Chief Minister, following their instructions is enough for him,” Siddaramaiah alleged. Speaking at an event here, the former Chief Minister said this government has not been able to give even a single house for the needy in four years and questioned as to whether should such a government continue. “They (BJP gover nment) should be ashamed...as Chief Minister for five years, I had constructed 15 lakh houses,” he claimed.

For mer Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh also condemned the incident and sought strict action against those involved in it. He claimed that “fringe elements” were trying to disturb peace and brotherhood in the country by such acts. “Strongly condemn the act of putting up Khalistan flags at the gate of Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha. These are acts of fringe elements who are trying to disturb the
peace and brotherhood of our country, which will not be tolerated. “Urge the Himachal Pradesh CMO to take strict action against the perpetrators,” Singh said in a tweet. The AAP slammed the BJP, asking how will its government save the people of the country when it failed in ensuring national security. Taking to twitter, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that the putting up of the Khalistan flags outside the gate of Himachal assembly building in Dharamshala was a “complete” failure of the BJP government in dealing with the matter
per taining to national security and keeping the respect of the people of the hill state. “The gover nment which cannot save the L e g i s l a t ive A s s e m b ly, h ow w i l l i t s ave t h e people. This is a matter of Himachal’s respect, security of the country. The BJP government has completely failed,” Sisodia said in his tweet. Local MLA Vishal Nehria termed the incident disgusting and an act of cowardice carried out in the darkness of night. “We, the Himachalis, and the Indians are not afraid of any threats from the supporters of so-called Khalistan,” the MLA said. The National Secretary of Congress Sudhir Sharma also termed the incident as unfortunate. ”It is unfor tunate that the flag of Khalistan at the entrance of the Dharamshala assembly and slogans are written on the walls, while the nonworking of CCTV and the absence of security personnel raises question marks on the administration and security agencies. We the people of Himachal will give our lives for the integrity of the country,” he tweeted.
NEW DELHI, MAY 8 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now the template for what it means and takes to be a “national leader”, Home Minister Amit Shah has said, asserting that the label was earlier handed out to even politicians of no proven merit and only capable of winning election from one or two safe Lok Sabha seats. While national leaders were identified in the immediate aftermath of the independence movement by their “name recall” across regions because of their participation in the freedom struggle, in the latter decades, notably at the height of the coalition era, the expression came to be much abused, he said, adding that Delhi media generously distributed the status to its “friends and favourites”. Writing in the book “Modi@20 Dreams Meet Delivery”, brought out by Rupa Publications and to be launched on May 11, Shah said such “facile and

MUMBAI, MAY 8 (PTI): Independent MP Navneet Rana, who recently got bail after being arrested by Mumbai police last month over ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ recitation row, on Sunday challenged Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to contest an election against her. She also claimed that people of Mumbai and Lord Ram will teach the Shiv Sena a lesson in civic polls. Shiv Sena president Thackeray, who became the CM in November 2019 after forging an alliance with the NCP and Congress, took oath as member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council in May 2020. Prior to that, he was not a member of the state legislature. Navneet Rana, the MP from Amravati in Maharashtra, and her MLAhusband Ravi Rana were arrested on April 23 by the Mumbai police after the couple announced that they would recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside CM Thackeray’s private residence `Matoshree’ here, which angered workers of the Shiv Sena, Thackeray’s party, leading to tension. The couple was

granted bail on May 4 by a special Mumbai court. They walked out of jail on May 5 following which Navneet Rana was admitted to a private hospital here. Her lawyer then said she had complaints of high blood pressure, bodyache and spondylitis. Talking to reporters on Sunday after being discharged from the hospital, the Navneet Rana said, “I challenge Uddhav Thackeray ji to chose a constituency and get elected directly by people. I will fight against him.” “I will work hard with honesty and win the election, and he (the CM) will know the people’s power,” she said. “What crime did I commit that I was jailed for
14 days? You can put me in jail for 14 years, but I will not stop chanting the names of Lord Ram and Hanuman. Mumbaikars and Lord Ram will teach the Shiv Sena a lesson in the civic polls,” the parliamentarian said. Navneet Rana also said she will campaign in Mumbai and support ‘Ram bhakts’ (followers of Lord Ram) to end the “corrupt rule” of the Shiv Sena. This Shiv Sena shares power in the state with the NCP and Congress. The Thackeray-led party also controls the cash-rich Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Notably, CM Uddhav Thackeray’s son Aaditya Thackeray is the first from the family to enter the electoral fray.

insincere manufacturing of national leaders” was shown up for what it was after Modi led the BJP to its biggest Lok Sabha win in 2014 before repeating the feat with a bigger margin in 2019. A confidant of the prime minister for over three decades, Shah wrote that the best teacher for a leader is “travelling to ordinary places, meeting ordinary families, sharing ordinary experiences, and doing all this by ordinary means.” “Narendra Modi has done so with greater frequency and perseverance than any politician in the past 75 years,” he said, adding that before the 2014
and the 2019 polls, there had been “no mandate for hope; and no mandate that was simply a reward for tested performance”. Noting that no party had won majority in Lok Sabha since 1984 till 2014, he said parties and prime ministers won majorities between 1952 and 1984 on the basis of the goodwill of the freedom movement, family legacy, anger against the incumbent (1977), a mix of fear and sympathy (1984) with appeasement, sectional prejudice, vote bank mobilisation and empty sloganeering like ‘Garibi Hatao’ of 1971. Ever ybody now recognises that the 2014 polls marked the most decisive shift in the history of Indian politics, Shah wrote. With Modi’s appeal being seen as a major factor in the BJP’s win in state polls, including the recent phase of five assembly elections, he said the prime minister embraces state campaigns, issues and idioms.

He said the last few days -- referring to Bagga’s arrest by the Punjab Police from his residence on Friday and his subsequent release, and then a non-bailable arrest warrant issued against the BJP leader by a Mohali court the next day -- have been very tough for them but they are “prepared to fight for the truth”. “Whatever is happening is for good and whatever will happen in the future will also be for good,” Singh told PTI over phone. He said they have got relief from the High Court in the non-bailable warrant issued against his son Saturday. “My son is consulting lawyers and we will proceed according to their advice.” Hours after the Mohali court issued the arrest warrant in connection with a case registered against him by the Punjab Police last month, Bagga had moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging it. In a reprieve to Bagga,

Bharatiya Janata Party for standing by them during the last few days, he said the party gave them “100 per cent support”. “From ground workers to senior leaders, everyone supported us. Yesterday, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and BJYM president Tejasvi Surya met us. It is a matter of pride for us that a Chief Minister visited us. We will continue to fight for the truth,” he said. Pritpal Singh also said that they were getting a lot of support from the common man in Punajb and that the public opinion is in their favour. Bagga’s arrest in the case filed by AAP leader Sunny Ahluwalia at Mohali on April 1 witnessed the Punjab Police pitted against their counterparts from Haryana and Delhi.
HYDERABAD, MAY 8 (IANS): Lashing out at the BJP over disinvestment, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Working President K. T Rama Rao on Sunday said that the party’s name stands for “Becho Janata ki Property”. He slammed the BJPled gover nment at the Centre for selling a public sector undertakings (PSUs). KTR, as Rama Rao is popularly known, spoke about politics, governance, and various other topics during his 90-minute long AskKTR session on Twitter. “This Union Govt is only good at selling PSUs under the ‘Becho India’ scheme. They will not respond to our requests to reopen CCI,” he wrote in reply to a question on the delay in reopening Cement Corporation of India (CCI) plant in Adilabad. KTR, who is Minister for Industries, Information Technology, Municipal Administration and Urban Development, made other sarcastic remarks about Modi government too. Asked about the price rise of LPG cylinders in the country, he said: “Modi Hain Tho Mumkin Hain. Welcome to #AchheDin.” “Modi Ji is unstoppable. He is going to make sure we are the No

1 in the world,” he wrote when a netizen asked him about his comments on the petrol, diesel, and cooking gas prices hike. Responding to a question on what the states have to do to deal with the fact that the powers of the states are being usur ped by the Union government, KTR said: “Continue to raise their voice democratically and collectively.” To a tweet that read ‘BJP MP Rohtak Sharma directly attacks Haryana BJP Government for swindling 300 cr Amrit Yojana money. BJP National President JP Nadda preached ignoring their Corruption like this, Karnataka and many more”, he said: “What more can we say when their MPs and MLAs are opening up. Am sure Satya Harischandra’s cousin Nadda Ji will look the other way.”
“He is not just an addon, or a mascot flown in for a few events and rallies. He complements the deep understanding of local politics and concerns that state BJP units and leaders bring to the table. This is very different from the supposed national leaders of other parties. They are flyin, fly-out visitors with no sense of the ground reality,” the home minister said. Modi has the “precious gift” of personal connection with every state and region, he added, noting that one must go back to his years before 2001 to understand it and to his “untiring Bharat Yatra of that period with a watchful eye, a listening ear and an open mind”. “That tapasya was his real-life university.” The prime minister’s experiential learning is his cognitive base, giving him an enormous understanding of the country as a bottomup, rather than top-down, imposed-from-above and Delhi-centric, national leader, Shah said.

Rahul Gandhi
NEW DELHI, MAY 8 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday stepped up his attack on the government over the hike in price of domestic LPG cylinder, and said only his party governs for the welfare of poor and middle class families. Cooking gas LPG prices were on Saturday hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder, the second increase in rates in just over six weeks following the firming of international energy rates.
Non-subsidised LPG now costs Rs 999.50 per 14.2-kg cylinder in the national capital, up from Rs 949.50 previously, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers. In a tweet, Gandhi compared the price of domestic LPG cylinder of about Rs 410 with a subsidy of Rs 827 in 2014 under a Congress-led government to that of over Rs 999 with “zero subsidy” in 2022 under the BJP-led Centre. “2 cylinders then for the price of 1 now!” the former Congress chief said. “Only Congress governs for the welfare of poor & middle class Indian families. It’s the core of our economic policy,” he said. After the hike on Saturday, Gandhi had said millions of Indian households are waging a difficult battle against “extreme inflation”, unemployment and “poor governance”.

or too long have people in Nagaland have been doing less to build their economy but indulging too much in politics as a consequence of which today that are too many self-acclaimed experts articulating views that pervade various fora. It seems that Nagas, at least of Nagaland, have become experts in the field of Naga politics and their articulation echo at various fora. It is the only activity that seem to dominate the landscape. Whenever there are two or three gathered together, politics is in their midst. The consequences of over indulgence in politics have become an aberration with consequences that are evidenced through -corruption, nepotism and lack of transparency and accountability. This is because, in politics, those in power talk about politics especially the Naga political issue which has become a consuming subject. Having stormed to power, albeit initially through support of NDM legislators to beat a challenge from the Congress, NPF had promised solution within three months after coming to power. Naga political issue and nothing else mattered, not even non-performance, poor governance and consequent all-pervading corruption. After all, if there were any who were against what were being done under the name of Naga political issue, were damned as being against it and consequently anti-Naga. Thus, having apportioned a wholesale dealership of Naga political issue, it meant that those in power could do anything under the sky since they and no one else, were defenders of Naga rights. Nagaland has been ravaged by this spectre of khushi-khushi syndrome. People groaned under the weight of rampant unauthorised and illegal collections under whatever name. The clichés of being in power on the premise of being a “people’s government” or “popularly mandated government”, claims of being where they are through muscle and money power; remain as real challenges needed for reformation. After around 19 years of regionalism being at the helm through a divisive agenda of ‘Us versus Them’ and “if you’re not with us then you’re against us” ; today there has been a belated realisation that things have totally gone wrong. Earlier, politics was the vehicle for development and decades later, it(politics) should be left to politicians. Nagaland has fallen behind all other north eastern states in matters of developmentprogress in the lives of the common people socially and economically. This newspaper, had on several occasions since the past decade, had maintained that the duty and responsibility of an elected government is to fulfil its constitutional obligations for the betterment and welfare of the people who elected them. The neglect of constitutional obligation to provide and effective governance has led to a cascading effect on the entire system. If there was any honest intention of creating a conducive atmosphere,it was in establishing a platform so that peace and development can be achieved. Political solution is not for a thousand, two thousand or five thousand people or the 60 or the few hundred in service but nearly 20 lakh people in one state and lakhs in other states. Nagaland’s experiment with a brand of rhetorical politics and brilliant abracadabra illusion has to end, not only for the people but for the issue(s) that their leaders had said were the issues of the people.
DailyDevotion The Faith to Persevere
Because you have kept My command to persevere… — Revelation 3:10 Perseverance means more than endurance— more than simply holding on until the end. A saint’s life is in the hands of God like a bow and arrow in the hands of an archer. God is aiming at something the saint cannot see, but our Lord continues to stretch and strain, and every once in a while the saint says, “I can’t take any more.” Yet God pays no attention; He goes on stretching until His purpose is in sight, and then He lets the arrow fly. Entrust yourself to God’s hands. Is there something in your life for which you need perseverance right now? Maintain your intimate relationship with Jesus Christ through the perseverance of faith. Pro-claim as Job did, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him” (Job 13:15). Faith is not some weak and pitiful emotion, but is strong and vigorous confidence built on the fact that God is holy love. And even though you cannot see Him right now and cannot understand what He is doing, you know Him. Disaster occurs in your life when you lack the mental composure that comes from establishing yourself on the eternal truth that God is holy love. Faith is the supreme effort of your life— throwing yourself with abandon and total confidence upon God. God ventured His all in Jesus Christ to save us, and now He wants us to venture our all with total abandoned confidence in Him. There are areas in our lives where that faith has not worked in us as yet— places still untouched by the life of God. There were none of those places in Jesus Christ’s life, and there are to be none in ours. Jesus prayed, “This is eternal life, that they may know You…” (John 17:3). The real meaning of eternal life is a life that can face anything it has to face without wavering. If we will take this view, life will become one great romance— a glorious opportunity of seeing wonderful things all the time. God is disciplining us to get us into this central place of power.

mid rising disaster risk threats to infrastructure, the world plans massive investments of $ 94 trillion for disaster resilience in the India-initiated Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI). The catch line is what the world invested in 200 years is to be done in 20 years. The global infrastructure investment is estimated at $ 2.7 billion a year. Insurance giant Lloyds was quoted as 12 percent funds getting lost in disasters and 88 percent funds into rebuilding. A disaster related to weather, climate or water hazard occurred every day on average over the past 50 years – killing 115 people and causing US$ 202 million in losses daily, according to a new report of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The costs are to rise as inflation rises and interest rates hiked. Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that infrastructure is about people and providing them high quality, dependable, and sustainable services in an equitable manner. The fourth International conference of CDRI in New Delhi does not focus on financing but sees infra plus green nature in totality through integrated
approach of communitybased efforts. An effort to save public fund! Many cities across the world and island nations are at great risks. In India, for example, cities like Bhubaneshwar, Vishakhapatnam, Chennai and Kolkata are perceived to be at climatic risk, says Kaushal Kishore, membersecretary of NDMA, the co-chair of ICDRI says. The other co-chair is Veena Reddy, mission-director of USAID. He says India may lead hydrogen initiative. The meet draws the contours but subtly deliberates the high investment projections because infra is never likely to have an infinite life. The resources are limited how would this expenditure be sustainably funded the meet grapples with, as Shiva Mokotoko, CEO, RBN Fund of South Africa indicates. The private sector is miser on such investment. It means it has to come through public funding, euphoria for financing by the poor. Nestor Altono Sanatamaria, Policy Device and Research OECD says how the money is spent, adaptability, flexibility as also designing policies as guarantor of public trust is key to the resilience. It is stated that the existing methods and tools of disaster risk reduction,
and climate risk management in particular, provide powerful capacities for substantially reducing risks and adapting to climate change. In focus are healthcare post pandemic, earthquakes, floods, rising cyclones in India’s east and west coasts and looks at the destruction of telecom towers, roads, ports and urban infra. Reddy says that $ 10 billion is required immediately for poverty reduction and flagship healthcare. What are to be saved are telecom towers, power plants, digital infra, transportation and communication. The Shivaji experts discuss various earthquakes, floods and cyclones in Haiti, Nepal, Pakistan, Peru and whether David Rodford Wilson, director in UK reconstructing Peru, Kamran Akbar of World Bank or Kevin Karouiki, an expert of power, climate and green growth, helping Fiji come out of 10 major cyclones since 2012 witnessing billions of dollar damages to housing to large infra, opine that the best solutions for reconstruction always come from the affected people. Akbar says, “Disaster brings the best and worst of the people” for reconstruction to restoration of livelihood.
They build blocks and reconstruct the local infra. The finances definitely have to be fine tuned. Furthermore, new changes, such as Arctic ice melting, are happening faster than was predicted by the IPCC reports. It seems that the future is more serious and challenging. Such meets discuss whether this can be stopped with pouring of funds and sharing by large private entities. Can it create the resilience! The Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan built on a quake prone area, close to the sea could have been prevented in 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsuSarkar nami had such spot not chosen. Not much is known to have been discussed of problems of the Three Gorge Dam of China overflowing often and accumulation of massive turbid water. There are instances of severe Kerala floods due to dam busts. It changed river courses and topography. Now India builds nine major dams including in fragile Aruanchal, Manipur and Mizoram. TS Swaminathan, an Indian expert extols the 200-300 year old dams for their resilience. The most circumspect on finances appears to be Africa. The Ghana chief
director, ministry of environment Cynthia Asare Bediako wonders how to create the fund for reducing carbon emission. She says climate change has no boundaries and how to forge policies that can help most challenges of sustenance, livelihoods and jobs. She wonders on private participation and if the CDRI could help. The African Development fund officer Surminsu calls for relook at policies as also on sustainable energy that is the first to break during a disaster. Poor countries need tech transfers that CDRI stresses. Kishore points at the Pacific islands. They are at continuous risk and needs about $ 3 billion to support them and wonder whether that is resilient investment. On energy front many questions remain. There is $ 10.2 billion UNFCC fund for green climate fund. Edwin Koekkoek, counsellor, energy, of European Union says that while mix of alternate energy is being worked out, there remain limitations. On having hydrogen, its import and export, EU is working with India on how to invest in energy infra. Vandana Kumar, secretary, renewable energy ministry says that India is taking steps to create the hydrogen support, its
storage and transportation issues and the green energy to the world. Rangan Banerjee, IIT, Delhi, says research is needed to build the hydrogen road map. Dr Uwe Remme, head hydrogen IAEA, says it is not easy technology and has high cost. Kishore releasing paper on hydrogen perspective says challenges are huge as also unclear on the governance to be needed vis a vis traditional power system. On finances, CDRI appraisal is likely to be mandatory for state projects, says Baldeo Purusharth, joint secretary, department of economic affairs and blended finance possible. Systems are also being created for making the system more robust through national monetisation scheme. Purusharth and Santamaria sum up the issue of financial trust that can create resilient system. Nobody can prevent climate change but for its sake the world cannot also plunge into investing sums into an abyss. Infra funding has large leakages and that has to be plugged to save the poor from further slipping into deep crisis. Discreet funding and protecting fragile ecology would create the dreamt resilient infra development and not the big projections.
Post-mortem
The philosophy of risk taking, adventures, self-structured insanity, etc
“T
oo often when trying something no one has ever done, there are only three likely outcomes: success, quitting, or serious injury and beyond. The difference in the three are often forces outside of your control. But this is the nature of the beast: RISK.” ~ Hendrik “Hendri” Coetzee, South African Adventurer and author. Known for leading Nile River Source-to-Sea Expedition in 2004. I was six or seven when parents made me step on the mountain in our village in Maharashtra. We still have those photographs. Confusion, fear and suffering was visible on my face. I was encouraged to climb up till the top which I did with load of fear in me. That I think was the first guided and guarded risk I ever took in my life. Question that often used to haunt me as to why people do things they do or the way they do, especially risking their lives, reputation, status etc. I used to often wonder about myself as well. Why did I do certain things which normally people cannot think of doing? Be it climbing mountain in the night, or paragliding, parasailing or jungle exploration, white water rafting or any other out-of-the-box thing that I have done. The rationale behind such an act? I did not know. Many such activities have happened and I made sure that they continue to happen even in Nagaland-my final abode, why? Now I think after endless experiments with life, experiences and futile conclu-sions I have discovered the answer at this relatively younger age of 35/36. H u m a n i s a ve r y unique animal. It is an important link in ecosystem, however, the Brain of a man has been wired differently than that of other creatures in animal kingdom. Man is able to perceive things, constr uct thoughts and ideas. Man cannot survive merely in a vegetative state of existence and therefore he needs something more than Food and Sex. Man needs a ‘reason’ to live and feel
alive. However, discovery of ‘reason’ was never an easy task. This discovery of ‘reason’ to live and feel alive paved path to number of mind blowing discoveries. Discovery of the abstract idea of ‘GOD PRINCIPLE OR THE FIRST CAUSE’ was one of them, which offered eternal source of hope, comfort and most importantly, to some extent ‘the reason to live’ for Man. However, the concept of ‘GOD PRINCIPLE’ did not completely solve the problem. Early GOD PRINCIPLES that human civilization discovered were symbolic to the ‘creation’ for eg. Mother God, Rivers, Mountains, Trees, Rain, Sun etc. These GODS in fact made Man more restless. Intelligent animal like human have got an ability to ‘ob-serve’, ‘learn’ and ‘react’ from nature. The observation of infinite sky, endless rivers, depthless oceans, stormy rains and sky penetrating mountains made Man more curi-ous and that ‘curiosity’ changed the entire course of human destiny. What is ‘up there’, what is ‘behind’ the known, what is ‘beyond’ visible these questions were sufficient enough to make man gear up to come out of his self-created psychological comfort zones and enter into the ‘unknown’. Moreover, Human exist for about 100000 years and tremendous amount of that time they were migrating from one place to another, they were hunting, collecting and all of them include great amount of risk in them. By doing all that our ancestors were trying to survive. If you want to survive then you are alive... Nowadays everything is different. You don’t have to go to forest and collect food, or move from one place to another in order to not die from extreme cold...But our instincts and years of memory still drive us to the ‘unknown’ to feel ALIVE. Pe o p l e w h o e n j oy adventure, at least in my experience, enjoy being uncomfortable, or at least find it more enjoyable than boring. They look back at negative experiences with fondness. Adventurers are
different breed- they suffer and find great meaning in suffering. Jim Wickwire was the first American to summit Mt. K2. In his memoir, Addicted to Danger, he said that he developed his love for climbing after read-ing Annapurna by Maurice Herzog. And although Herzog’s reason for summiting the formidable Annapurna was simple—“because it was there”—Wickwire’s reason seemed far more complex. Despite supporting five young children, he described a relentless compulsion to mountaineer. Even after a nasty fall he said he “wanted more” while also claiming a “heightened attraction to danger.” “More” is what he got! He nearly died on Mt. Rainier, and though he successfully climbed McKinley and K2, he saw the lives of friends and strangers alike indiscriminately snuffed out by peril and disaster. Wickwire were obviously searching for something— and risking death in the process. The desire for adventure is a major part of being human. Since the first people started to spread out in Africa, exploration has been essential to humanity’s development. However, exploration into the unknown does not remain confined to what is being sought after. In fact, as we get closer to demystify the mysteries of the unknown we end up discovering our inner reality as well. The more you experience the brutality of Mother Nature through the shadow of the possibility of death, the more comfortable you become with the idea of being ‘simply a human’. I think, adventure primarily introduce us to the possibility to overcome your own ‘ignorant’ self through the painful experiences that you encounter. With this deep understanding Tetso Motorcycle Club and Tetso Mountaineering Club were set up at Tetso College, Nagaland as part of grand experiments I have been performing there as an Educationist. These platforms are absolutely necessary and utmost important to help student liberate themselves from the prison of their ‘own’ self. I
was never in agreement with the kind of education system that has been running since years in our country. We are making students competitive-agree. We are making them capable to at least become a salarymen/ salarywomen- agree. We are making them capable to earn so that they can marry, have family, children, get re-tired, earn pension and DIE- AGREE, however, what we are NOT doing is to help them discover who they ‘really’ are and their true relation with their ‘own self ’ and the ‘creation’. Modern education system has no scope for ‘selfdiscovery’. Man can only search for himself when he is able to develop a desire to come out of the comfortable illusions that he has created around himself, and may be that is the reason that in religions like Buddhism and also in Christianity missionaries are encouraged for centuries to come out of their comfort zones to engage in adventurous journeys to carry forward the religious missions to spread the ‘message’ as well as gain the ‘self-knowledge’ through the overall experiences to accelerate their spiritual ascension. Adventure involves risk taking. If there is no risk, there cannot be an adventure. How-ever, the element of risk and our ability to ‘tackle and manage’ it is a major factor that decides the outcome of activities that one is undertaking. My personal experience says that, adventurers are primarily ‘risk takers’ NOT ‘risk seekers’. They know what they are doing and they are well prepared for that. For e.g. in Motorcycle Rides, even though ‘speeding’ is discouraged, sometimes inner instincts play their role and in no time ‘engine accelerates’ and riders find themselves battling the wind for few moments, however, the riders are well prepared for it with Helmet, Body Armour, Arm and Leg Guard etc with years of riding experience and sensibility to ride without harming anybody else or themselves on the road. The same could be applicable to the Moun-
taineers, Sailors, Jungle Hermits, Adventure sports enthusiasts as well. I think Man is born adventurer. There is something strange that is ‘dormant’ in all of us which if ‘activated’ in the right way can transform person completely. Exposure to risk has a constructive emotional as well as spiritual impact over the person. Only when put to threatening circumstances where the whole existence of someone is at stake, his/ her core essence gets activated and all the masks and the layers of social, political, cultural indoctrination that covered the ‘real self ’ of a man disappears and raw ‘Life Force’ comes out visible and shining and in a moment we are introduced to what we could understand as the ‘Kingdom of GOD’ within us. T h e r e f o r e, i n t h i s broader space of understanding, I expect my students and disciples to not
to be too timid and squeamish about their actions. They should know that entire life is an experiment. The more experiments they make the better. I expect, they should explore, experience and push beyond with blatant disregard to their own ‘perceived’ physical and psychological limitations. This is how new Man will be born and such a man is an asset to society. They are the real leaders- the self-starters-motivation unto themselves. THE REAL ÜBERMENSCH ! When you reach alone on top of the Mountain after hours of struggle, broken body and shattered mind-you experience yourself transforming into the Mountain. Tall, Strong, Unsurpassable, Wise. A mountain that gives life to the Rivers- A LIFE GIVERTHAT YOU BECOME. Dr. Aniruddha Babar, Dept. of Political Science, Tetso College

Re-deployment of teachers – rational exercise?
Sir,
At the outset, I would like to put it on record that a govet middle school at Old Soget Village in Peren district is run by a single under graduate teacher. At the first instance of rationalisation of teachers, a lady mathematics teacher was withdrawn without any replacement in the past three years. Representation after representation were submitted to the principal director, School Education and briefing him personal-ly, but in vain. Besides this, the Hindi teacher Anil Kumar Jha goes on superannuation pension since 2020 but no replacement made so far. As such, govt middle school, Old Soget was run without Mathematics and Hindi teacher since then. On February 26, 2022, a representation was submitted to the advisor, School Education at Ahthibung in the same issue, during the inauguration of Higher Secondary Ahthibung but nothing was materialised. Worst of all, in the recent re-deployment exercise, the head teacher (subject teacher of SS), the English subject teacher and the science teacher were all withdrawn, leaving behind the lone under graduate primary teacher to look after primary and middle school. So far, no one come forward as replacement. Can we assume it as rationalization exercise? To me, and to everybody, it is most “irrational”, injustice which is sure to hamper the academic career of the 70 plus rural children of the clustering villages studying there. How long the School Education authority is going to neglect us! LL Kuki, Old Soget village4, Peren district, Nagaland

According to Dungar pur Kotwali police station, an FIR was registered against Chopra by a man alleging that the journalist gave false and fictitious details by showing that the demolition of a temple in Rajgarh of Alwar district was done by the Rajasthan government as an act of revenge following the demolition drive in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri. Three FIRs have been registered against Chopra, including in Bundi, Alwar and Dungarpur districts, under various sections per taining to sedition, outraging religious sentiments and promoting enmity between two groups

He said the high court order does not mention the FIR registered in Dungarpur and stay was given on his arrest in FIRs registered in Bundi and Alwar districts. When asked about
cooperation from the Noida police in the matter, Joshi said, “Our team was stopped and asked to come to a local police station before directly acting on the arrest warrant. We cannot say that it is full cooperation.” He said Noida Police was already informed about the case details and this was the second time the
police team had gone for his arrest. However, the officials of the Noida Police said they provided full assistance to the Rajasthan Police in carrying out all due procedures, even as the news anchor was not found at his home in the Bisrakh area. “The action was to be taken by the Rajasthan police and not the UP police. We did help them and assist them as per procedures, and carried out the entries. We helped them in issuing the notice, identifying the location and there was no hindrance from our side,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Noida), Elamaran G, told PTI. NEW DELHI, MAY 8 (PTI): The storm in the Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclone on Sunday, packing wind speed of more than 75 kmph, and is expected to get stronger, the weather office said. However, it is expected to fizzle out next week without making a landfall. Under the influence of the cyclone, northern Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts are expected to experience heavy winds and rains from Tuesday, the weather office said. The cyclonic storm ‘Asani’, Sinhanlese for ‘wrath’, lay centred over southeast Bay of Bengal 380 km west of Port Blair in the Andaman Islands at 5:30 am on Sunday, the weather office said. “It is very likely to move northwestwards and intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm over east central Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours,” the India Meteorological
Department (IMD) said in a bulletin issued at 8:30 am. According to the track of the cyclone forecast by IMD, the cyclone was very likely to continue to move northwestwards till May 10 evening and reach West central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts. “Thereafter, it is very likely to recurve northnortheastwards and move towards Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast,” it said. According to the cyclone trackers, the weather system is expected to be at its strongest, packing wind speed of 60 knots (111 km per hour), on Monday with its fury on full display in the Bay of Bengal. The severe cyclonic storm is expected to start weakening gradually from Tuesday as it moves towards the coasts of nor ther n Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

towards the common man should be courteous and friendly, the Vice President said, “A visit to a police station should be a hasslefree experience for a person who goes there seeking help. The first thing to reform for this is the attitude of the police - they must be open-minded, sensitive and receptive to each individual citizen’s concerns.”
Noting that police reforms is a highly important and sensitive subject, the Vice President said that although there have been various attempts at introducing reforms over the years, progress has not been made to the desired extent. He called for a political will in the states to properly implement the reforms, according to the Supreme
Court guidelines. Naidu said that over the years following Independence, the police force was perceived to be increasingly politicised with significant erosion in values and practices. “Instead of being seen as a people-friendly force, it was seen as being elitist and power-friendly,” he observed. Refer ring to the instances of misuse of police force during the infamous Emergency, Naidu said that it was used with impunity to suppress human rights and imprison thousands of people, including all the political opponents of the ruling dispensation. He also appreciated the Prime Minister’s call for making the police a SMART force --standing for a force which is Strict and Sensitive, Modern and Mobile, Alert and Accountable, Reliable and Responsive, Tech-savvy and Trained. Calling for reforms in all walks of public life, including politics, legislatures and judiciary, Naidu stressed the need for speedy disposal of criminal cases against politicians and civil servants to retain people’s trust in the system.
NAGPUR, MAY 8 (PTI): President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday said the foray of unicorns and start-ups into sectors like education and health can be a game changer for the country. Kovind was addressing a gathering here in Maharashtra after inaugurating the permanent campus of the Indian Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur. The premier institute was established in 2015. He said an educational institute is not just a place of learning. “It is place which polishes the inner and sometimes even hidden talents in each one of us. The curriculum gives us the
occasion to introspect within ourselves the purpose, the ambition and hence, fulfil our dreams,” he said. “ We a r e l iv i n g i n an era where innovation and entrepreneurship are appreciated and encouraged. The stories of various unicorns or start-ups which have been slated to be worth more than one billion

health have also become part of these new enterprises. Such forays can be the game changer for our country. It can be a combination of job provider and revenue earner for our people,” he said. Ko v i n d a l s o s a i d that both the innovation and entrepreneurship have the ability to provide employment opportunities.

NEW DELHI, MAY 8 (IANS): Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday emphasised that a progressive, modern India must have a police force which meets the democratic aspirations of the people and called for a renewed thr ust to implementing reforms in the police forces. Addressing a gathering after releasing the book titled ‘The Struggle for Police Reforms in India’ written by for mer IPS officer Prakash Singh, the Vice President stressed the need to upgrade the skills of policemen to effectively tackle the 21st century crimes such as cybercrimes and economic offences which require special investigative expertise due to their sophisticated and often transboundary nature. The Vice President highlighted issues that need to be addressed on a war footing, including filling up of the huge number of vacancies in the police departments and strengthening the police infrastructure in tune with the requirements of modern age policing. to 11 apex court judges. Justice Pardiwala will go on to serve as the CJI for over two years, sources aware of the procedure to appoint members of the higher judiciary said. Justice Dhulia, who will be the second judge to be elevated from Uttarakhand, is the sibling of national award-winning film director and actor Tigmanshu Dhulia. He will have a tenure of a little over three years. Justice Pardiwala will be the fourth judge from the Parsi community to adorn the top court bench and the first high court judge from the minority community who has been elevated in the last five years, after Justice S Abdul Nazeer. Justice Nazeer was
general, and was elevated as the judge in the same high court in November 2008. He later became the chief justice of the High Court of Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh on January 10, 2021. Justice Pardiwala, born on August 12, 1965, started practising law in the High Court of Gujarat in 1990. The CJI, who himself will demit office on August 26 this year, has been successful in evolving consensus in the five-judge collegium to unanimously recommend a record number of 11 names so far, since August last year. The apex court, which did not get a single judge after the superannuation of the then CJI Ranjan Gogoi on November 17, 2019, had nine existing vacancies when CJI Ramana took over, and the high courts had around 600 vacancies. The collegium then ensured the filling up of nine vacancies in the Supreme Court in August last year in one go, and Justice B V Nagarathna, one of three women judges, would become the first woman CJI.

Two days after the apex court collegium headed by the CJI recommended the names of the two high court judges, the Union Law Ministry swiftly announced their appointments on S a t u r d ay i n s e p a r a t e notifications. With the appointment of Justice Dhulia and Justice Pardiwala, the top court will regain its full strength of 34 judges which had come down to 32 after the retirement of Justice R Subhash Reddy on January 4 this year. Instead of the CJI’s courtroom, the usual place for such events, the swearing-in ceremony will be held in the newly-built auditorium of the additional building complex of the apex court at 10.30 AM on Monday. There had been a committee report in 2007 on how to dispose old EVMs. From 2007 to 2018, for 12 years, the Election Commission turned a blind eye to this recommendation,” Patil said, adding that the Speaker should issue summons to the Election Commission and resolve this matter.
‘Dirty coal’ commercially unviable: Energy experts
NEW DELHI, MAY 8 (IANS): Amidst the coal crisis where the Centre has invoked an emergency law to operate idle coal importbased utilities, energy transition experts believe the electricity generation for 1.35 billion people based on expensive imported coal for blending is commercially unviable -- both high and inflationary. They say combined with the global pandemic and the Ukraine-Russia war, which has increased coal prices internationally, it should be a death knell for coal. The time to ramp up wind and solar is now so that India is prepared to deal with a warming world. Heatwaves are sweep-
ing across India, with March recording the hottest in 122 years, resulting in high energy demand touching 207GW in Aprilend, the worst crisis in over six years. Demand is far exceeding supply resulting in power outages by state DISCOMs. With imported coal prices at an all-time high, DISCOMs are wary of buying expensive power. The experts told IANS on Sunday that it is counter-intuitive that the government is actually looking to auction new mines, re-open old mines and old thermal power plants, which will not only create stranded assets but exacerbate climate change. Rather it should be

looking at better energy planning, and diversifying the energy mix keeping in mind emissions, global disruptions and the inflationary nature of fossil fuels. Power Ministry officials say the installed capacity of electric grid is close to 340 GW. Seventy per cent of this is coal powered. There isn’t enough supply is what is being said. The reality is there isn’t adequate planning due to which coal transport is delayed and power generators can’t transmit power in time. No more coal mines are needed in reality although Union Coal and Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi last week proposed to sell 20 abandoned mines with extractable reserves at

The reason for opting the dirtiest fossil fuel is that India, world’s third largest energy consumer with electricity demand growing by 4.7 per cent each year, is going to be tough to put new money into renewable energy. “Frequent climate extremes and power shocks only indicate how much climate action and energy transition needs are intertwined and affected by not just domestic events but also regional and international tremors,” Global Wind Energ y Council (GWEC) India Policy Director Martand Shardul said.

In August last year, Musk had said that American electric vehicle maker Tesla may set up manufacturing unit in India if it first succeeds with imported vehicles in the country. a week before the inflation numbers for April were expected — likely to be released on May 12 —the RBI stepped in with an unscheduled policy announcement. There were two takeaways from R B I Governor Shaktikanta Das’ address on the afternoon of May 4. One, the repo rate, meaning the rate at which RBI lends to commercial banks, was raised by 40 basis points, something which analysts expected to happen only next month. Two, the cash reserve ratio (CRR) was hiked by 50 basis points, which will force lenders to set aside more money with the central bank and thus suck out an estimated Rs 87,000 crore liquidity from the system. “As several storms hit together, our actions today are important steps to steady the ship,” said Das, calling himself an “eternal optimist”. Despite such optimism, RBI can no longer shy away from the global storm which has not spared India and is strong enough to stay longer. Fuel and food inflation have engulfed the world, eating into the savings of people and dampening economic recovery of countries.

view of rising costs. With no quick fix in sight, the current cycle of inflation is likely to be long and grim for Indians, and the belt-tightening that has already begun is likely to intensify. For two consecutive months, February and March, India’s headline retail inflation breached the upper tolerance level of 6% set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In March, consumer price index (CPI) inflation surged to 6.95%, a 17-month high, up from 6.1% in February. Both the numbers are alarming, as they transgressed the accepted inflation band of 2-6%, and do not augur well for an economy that has just started rebounding after being rammed by the Covid-19 pandemic. On the back of soaring prices of cereals, vegetables, meat and fish, oils and fats, consumer food price inflation too jumped to a 16-month high of 7.7% in March, ringing alarm bells simultaneously in Delhi’s North Block and Mumbai’s Mint Street. India’s wholesale price index-based inflation also jumped to 14.6% in March, from 13.1% in February. Against this backdrop and,

Retail inflation printed at 6.9 per cent in March and the April reading is forecast to top 7.7 per cent. However, she was quick to assert that the central bank’s decision will not impact the government’s planned huge infrastructure investments running into tens of billions of dollars. On the economic sanctions against Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, she said the blockades were constraining us as traditional buyers from Russia were shifting to sources from the Indian basket of crude, 80-85 per cent of which is from the Middle East. This shift was likely to put more pressure on the Indian crude basket price.

NEW DELHI, MAY 8 (IANS): The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) move to raise the policy rate is part of a synchronised action by the central banks, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said, adding that it came as a surprise only because it was done between two monetary policy reviews. Dozens feared dead after Russian bomb Ukraine school
ZAPORIZHZHIA, MAY 8 (AP): Dozens of Ukrainians were feared dead on Sunday after a Russian bomb destroyed a school sheltering about 90 people in the basement as Moscow’s invading forces kept up their barrage of cities, towns and villages in eastern and southern Ukraine. The governor of Luhansk province, one of two areas that make up the eastern industrial heartland known as the Donbas, said the school in the village of Bilohorivka caught fire after Saturday’s bombing. Emergency crews found two bodies and rescued 30 people, he said. “Most likely, all 60 people who remain under the rubble are now dead,” Gov. Serhiy Haidai wrote on the Telegram messaging app. Russian shelling also killed two boys, ages 11 and 14, in the nearby town of Pryvillia, he said. Since failing to capture Ukraine’s capital, Russia has focused its offensive in the Donbas, where Moscowbacked separatists have been fighting since 2014 and occupy some territory. The largest European conflict since World War II has developed into a punishing war of attrition due to the Ukrainian military’s unexpectedly effective defense. To demonstrate suc-

cess, the Russian military worked to complete its conquest of the besieged port city of Mariupol, which has been under relentless assault since the start of the war, in time for Victory Day celebrations on Monday. A sprawling seaside steel mill is the only part of the city not under Russian control. All the remaining women, children and older civilians who had been sheltering with Ukrainian fighters in the Azovstal plant were evacuated Saturday. The troops still inside have refused to surrender; hundreds are believed to be
wounded. After rescuers evacuated the last civilians Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his nightly address that the focus would turn to extracting the wounded and medics. Zelenskyy said in his nightly address that work would also continue Sunday on securing humanitarian corridors for residents of Mariupol and surrounding towns to leave. The Ukrainian government has been reaching out to international organizations to try to secure safe passage for the estimated 2,000 fighters remaining in
the plant’s underground tunnels and bunkers. Zelenskyy acknowledged the difficulty, but said: “We are not losing hope, we are not stopping. Every day we are looking for some diplomatic option that might work.” The Ukrainian leader was expected to hold online talks Sunday with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, US President Joe Biden and leaders from other Group of Seven countries. The meeting is partly meant to display unity among Western allies on Victory in Europe Day, which marks Nazi Ger-
many’s 1945 surrender. Elsewhere on Ukraine’s coast, explosions echoed again Sunday across the major Black Sea port of Odesa, which Russia struck with six cruise missiles on Saturday. Authorities offered no immediate damage reports. The Odesa city council said four of the missiles launched Saturday hit a furniture company, with the shock waves and debris badly damaging high-rise apartment buildings. The other two hit the Odesa airport, where a previous Russian attack destroyed the runway. Ukrainian leaders warned that attacks would only worsen in the lead-up to Victory Day, the May 9 holiday when Russia celebrates Nazi Germany’s defeat in 1945 with military parades. Russian President Vladimir Putin is believed to want to proclaim some kind of triumph in Ukraine when he addresses the troops on Red Square on Monday. In neighbouring Moldova, Russian and separatists troops were on “full alert,” the Ukrainian military warned. The region has increasingly become a focus of worries that the conflict could expand beyond Ukraine’s borders. Pro-Russian forces broke off the Transnistria
section of Moldova in 1992, and Russian troops have been stationed there since, ostensibly as peacekeepers. Those forces are on “full combat readiness,” Ukraine said, without giving details on how it came to the assessment. Moscow has sought to sweep across southern Ukraine both to cut off the country from the Black Sea and to create a corridor to Transnistria. But it has struggled to achieve those objectives. In a sign of the dogged resistance that has sustained the fighting into its 11th week, Ukraine’s military struck Russian positions on a Black Sea island that was captured in the war’s first days and has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance. Satellite photos analysed by The Associated Press showed Ukraine targeting Russian-held Snake Island in a bid to impede Russia’s efforts to control the sea. A satellite image taken Sunday morning by Planet Labs PBC showed smoke rising from two sites on the island. On the island’s southern edge, a fire smoked next to debris. That corresponded to a video released by the Ukrainian military showing a strike on a Russian helicopter that had flown to the island.
9 UK confirms extra military support funds for Ukraine LONDON, MAY 8 (PTI): T h e U K g ove r n m e n t pledged an additional 1.3 billion pounds in military support to Ukraine during this financial year to help the country counter Russian forces in the ongoing conflict, as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other G7 leaders met virtually with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday. The meeting came on a day, which is being marked across Europe as VE Day – or Victory in Europe Day that ended World War II on May 8, 1945. The additional UK funding will go towards electronic warfare equipment, a counter battery radar system, GPS jamming equipment and thousands of night vision devices, among other military kit pledged by Johnson earlier. “[Russian President] Putin’s brutal attack is not only causing untold devastation in Ukraine – it is also threatening peace and security across Europe,” said Johnson. “The UK was the first country to recognise the scale of the threat and sent arms to help the Ukrainians defend themselves. We will stand by that endeavour, working with our allies to ensure Ukraine can contin-

ue to push back the Russian invasion and survive as a free and democratic country. In the process, we are bolstering our own security and economy, turbocharging the development and production of cutting-edge defence equipment here in the UK,” he said. The extra 1.3 billion pounds comes from the Reserve, funds the UK government said it has set aside for the most pressing emergencies. This latest commitment is in addition to the UK’s current package for Ukraine that totals well over 1.5 billion pounds. The support already provided includes around 400 million pounds in humanitarian aid and grants and unlocking over 700 million pounds in additional World Bank lending through loan guarantees. “The situation in Ukraine continues to cause immense suffering with every day bringing new, tragic stories of Putin’s brutality,” said UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak.
Chinese confidence in pak security Monkeypox virus case confirmed in UK after Nigeria travel link system shaken, says senior lawmaker ISLAMABAD, MAY 8 (PTI): The Chinese confidence in Pakistan’s security system’s ability to protect its citizens and projects is seriously shaken after the Karachi University attack last month, a senior lawmaker has said. Three Chinese teachers were killed when an explosion triggered by a burqaclad woman suicide bomber from the Baluchistan Liberation Army (BLA) ripped through a van of the Confucius Institute at the prestigious University of Karachi on April 26. This was the latest targeted attack against Chinese citizens in Pakistan. Sharing the mood of the Chinese side after the attack to Dawn newspaper on Friday, Senator Mushahid Hussain, who is also the chairman of the Senate Defence Committee, said: “It has caused serious concern and understandable indignation in China.” Hussain led a Senate delegation to the Chinese embassy last week to express his condolences over the loss of the Chinese lives in the university attack. “The Chinese confidence in Pakistan’s security system’s ability to protect their citizens and their proj-

ects is seriously shaken,” said Hussain. The Karachi University attack was the third terrorist attack on Chinese citizens on Pakistani soil in a year. “The pattern of attacks is so recurring and it’s clear that Pakistani promises of ‘foolproof security’ are mere words, not matched by countermeasures on the ground,” he maintained. Criticising the security arrangements, he said security agencies seemed to have been caught napping. “If such attacks continue, not just Chinese but other foreign investors will be forced to review their role in Pakistan,” he said. There were reports on social media of Chinese workers leaving Pakistan in large numbers after the attack. A Chinese source denied such reports, adding that it was a regular move-
ment of Chinese workers and citizens living in Pakistan on a weekly flight from Karachi that was presented by some as an “exodus”. The source, however, noted that terrorist attacks do impact the confidence of the Chinese community living here. The Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) cybercrime wing said the tweet claiming that thousands of Chinese were leaving from the Karachi airport because of threats was a “baseless and panic-creating video tweet”. Head of FIA Cyber Crime Sindh Imran Riaz told the newspaper that action would be taken against the person who tweeted it once the ongoing investigations were complete. At a media conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lijian Zhao expressed hope that “the plot of terrorist forces to undermine the two countries’ mutual trust and cooperation will not succeed”. He said the Chinese side would work with Pakistan to conduct a thorough investigation, reveal the truth, bring the perpetrators to justice, and explain to the people of both countries.
LONDON, MAY 8 (PTI): The UK health authorities have confirmed a case of monkeypox, which is a virus passed from infected animals such as rodents to humans, in someone with a recent travel history to Nigeria where they are believed to have caught it. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said monkeypox is a rare viral infection that does not spread easily between people and is usually a mild “self-limiting illness” and most people recover within a few weeks. However, severe illness can occur in some cases. “It is important to emphasise that monkeypox

back the proposal from the lawyers’ body BASL which had advocated for the setting up of an interim government for a period of 18 months with a move to abolish the presidential system of governance. They had also called for the repealing of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution which conferred unfettered powers to Rajapaksa in 2020. The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) calls for the restoration of the 19 Amendment to the Consti-
tution which had empowered Parliament over the president. The SJB is to have a discussion with the BASL on this proposal, the SJB leader Harin Fernando said. The 19A adopted in 2015 pruned presidential powers by empowering Parliament above the executive president. However, the 19A was scrapped after Gotabaya Rajapaksa won the November 2019 presidential election. Meanwhile, former President Maithripala Sirisena also met Premadasa on

SL Oppn rejects Prez Rajapaksa’s offer to form interim government COLOMBO, MAY 8 (PTI): Sri Lanka’s main Opposition SJB said on Sunday that it has rejected an offer by embattled President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to its leader Sajith Premadasa to head an interim government, amid continued political uncertainty in the country which is now under a state of emergency. “Our leader refused to accept the president’s offer,” Tissa Attanayake, the national organiser for Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) told reporters. Rajapaksa had called over the telephone both Premadasa and Harsha de Silva, the SJB economic guru, on the prospect of forming an interim government which had been a demand endorsed by the powerful Buddhist clergy as well as the group which had broken away from the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) coalition. The SJB announced on Saturday that they would
“We are working with NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSEI) to contact the individuals who have had close contact with the case prior to confirmation of their infection, to
assess them as necessary and provide advice. UKHSA and the NHS have well established and robust infection control procedures for dealing with cases of imported infectious disease and these will be strictly followed,” he said. The patient is being treated in specialist isolation unit at St Thomas’ Hospital by expert clinical staff with strict infection prevention procedures, added Dr Nicholas Price, Consultant in Infectious Diseases at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital. As a precautionary measure, UKHSA experts said they are working closely with England’s state-funded National Health Service
Saturday to ask the SJB to take over the interim government. Premadasa, 55, has already announced that he would not be a party to any government headed by the two Rajapaksas - Gotabaya and Mahinda. The SJB, which has handed over to the parliamentary Speaker motions of no-confidence against the SLPP coalition government and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, is putting pressure on parliamentary Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to advance the date of its debate. The Buddhist clergy too has intensified pressure on Rajapaksa to implement the interim government plan. The government hemmed in by a month of street protests has imposed a state of emergency, which gives the security forces sweeping powers to crack down on dissent. Sri Lanka is currently in the throes of unprec-
edented economic turmoil since its independence from Britain in 1948. Thousands of demonstrators have hit the streets across Sri Lanka since April 9, as the government ran out of money for vital imports; prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed and there are acute shortages in fuel, medicines and electricity supply. Despite mounting pressure, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his elder brother and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa have refused to quit office. In a special Cabinet meeting on Friday, President Rajapaksa declared a state of emergency with effect from Friday midnight. This is the second emergency declared in just over a month. Rajapaksa had declared an emergency on April 1 also after a mass protest opposite his private residence. He had revoked it on April 5 following severe criticism of his move.

to Diets rich in protein, niacin, and playRobbiehimselfWilliams in biopic zinc may boost blood-vessel health A T ccording to a study being presented at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO), which is being held on May 4-7, 2022 in Maastricht, the Netherlands, there may be some very particular dietary changes you can make that will help keep your arteries healthy and flexible. The authors say that protein, niacin, and zinc were linked to improvements in both the structure and function of blood vessels in their study. In addition, they point to a specific dietery pattern which may do a good job of providing you with these nutrients, as well as others that are linked to cardiovascular health. The research is prepublication and has not yet been peer-reviewed. Tr a c k i n g nu t r i e n t changes during dieting Lead author Dr. Brurya Tal and her team at The Sagol Center for the Metabolic Syndrome, Institute of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Hyper tension, Tel Aviv-Sourasky Medical Center, Tel Aviv, Israel, wrote that it is known that weight loss is associated with improvements i n c a r d i ova s c u l a r a n d metabolic health. What it is not known, however, is whether any particular nutrient changes during dieting might be responsible for those improvements. In order to investigate this question, the researchers enrolled 72 people with metabolic syndrome and obesity into a one-year weight loss program. Metabolic syndrome
is defined by the American Heart Association as having at least three of the following risk factors: • High blood sugar • Low levels of the “good” cholesterol HDL • H i g h l eve l s o f triglycerides • Excess abdominal fat • High blood pressure • Having metabolic syndrome puts people at greater risk for heart and blood vessel diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity is characterized by a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30. The study participants were provided with a personalized diet and exercise plan as well as regular meetings with a doctor and a dietitian. The average age of the participants was 53. They were required to complete a dietar y questionnaire a week before beginning the weight loss progam as well as at the end. At the end of the year, the research team measured blood vessel flexibility in three different ways: pulse wave ve l o c i t y ( P W V ) ,

A source said: “Michael and Robbie held top-secret auditions to find a star to play the young Robbie recently. “They didn’t meet anyone they were confident could pull it off. “Robbie is stunned at how difficult the project has been to get made. And now he’s starting to worry it’s never going to make it to the big screen and he’ll look foolish for hyping it up. “The London-based studio, Rocket Science, is handling international sales on the project and is hoping for a big hit. “Robbie has fans all over the world and his story is not short of drama. But if they can’t find a star charismatic enough to play him, the whole house of cards is going to come falling down and it’ll end up in development hell.” (Contactmusic)
Giant groundwater system discovered below Antarctic ice
A
team of scientists has mapped a huge, actively circulating groundwater system in deep sediments in West Antarctica. The team at Columbia University estimated that if all of it were extracted, it would form a water column from 220 to 820 metres high -- at least 10 times more than in the shallow hydrologic systems within and at the base of the ice -- maybe much more even than that. However, they noted that said such systems, p r o b a b ly c o m m o n i n Antarctica, may have as-yet unknown implications for how the frozen continent reacts to, or possibly even contributes to, climate change. “People have hypothesised that there could be deep groundwater in these sediments, but up to now, no one has done any detailed imaging,” said lead author Chloe Gustafson, who did the research as a g raduate student at Columbia University’s
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Scientists have, for decades, flown radars and other instruments over the Antarctic ice sheet to image subsurface features. Among many other things, these missions have revealed sedimentary basins sandwiched between ice and bedrock. But airborne geophysics can generally reveal only the rough outlines of such features, not water content or other characteristics. In the research appearing in the journal S c i e n c e, t h e t e a m concentrated on the 60-mile-wide Whillans Ice Stream, one of a halfdozen fast-moving streams feeding the Ross Ice Shelf, the world’s largest. To better map the sediments and their p r o p e r t i e s, t h e y u s e d geophysical instruments placed directly on the surface. Their analysis showed that, depending on location, the sediments extend below the base of the
ice from a half kilometre to nearly two kilometres before hitting bedrock. And they confirmed that the sediments are loaded with liquid water all the way down. They were also able to show that the groundwater becomes more saline with depth. However, the researchers said, if the ice surface were to thin -- a distinct possibility as climate warms -- the direction of water flow could be reversed. Overlying pressures would decrease, and deeper groundwater could begin welling up toward the ice base. This could further lubricate the base of the ice and increase its forward motion. F u r t h e r m o r e, i f deep groundwater flows upward, it could carry up geothermal heat naturally generated in the bedrock; this could further thaw the base of the ice and propel it forward. But if that will happen, and to what extent, is not clear, the team said. (IANS)

common carotid arter y intima media thickness (IMT), and flow mediated dilation (FMD). PWV is the rate at which pressure waves move down the vessel. Carotid artery IMT is the thickness of the two innermost walls of the arteries which supply blood to the brain. FMT looks how much the artery widens as blood flow increases. At the conclusion of the diet, people’s BMI had dropped on average 9.4 percent. In addition, all of the measures of blood vessel flexibility had improved. They found that improved PWV was linked to reduced calorie intake, lower saturated fat intake, and increased zinc intake. IMT was linked to reduced calories and saturated fat as well. It was also linked to increased protein intake. Finally, improved FMD was linked with increased intake of the vitamin niacin (vitamin B3). Some of the nutrients that appeared to play a role in arterial flexibility included zinc, niacin, and protein. Zinc plays a crucial role in the production of nitric oxide, which helps blood vessels relax and widen. Niacin also helps to dilate
blood vessels, especially in the upper part of the body, according to the study authors. As to which dietery pattern specifically can provide more of these nutrients, Tal said, “The weight loss diet of the study participants was a Mediterranean diet, rich in protein and vegetables, which contained nuts and seeds and a moderate amount of fruits and starches.” Shereen Jegtvig, a nutritionist at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, who was not a part of the study, agreed with their approach, saying, “The Mediterranean diet is a good heart-healthy diet according to a number of studies.” The Nordic and Okinawan Diets are good too, she said. “Basically, a hearthealthy diet is loaded with vegetables and fruits and includes plenty of whole grains (and less highly refined grains).” She also noted that you don’t necessarily have to follow any specific diet. “The best diet is one that you can follow, so it needs to have a nice variety of foods you enjoy, just with a focus on healthier choices,” she said. When it comes to the specific nutrients mentioned in the study, Jegtvig said that good protein and niacin sources include lean meat, fish, seafood, dry beans, nuts and seeds. These foods are also high in zinc, she added, and oysters are an especially good source of zinc. (Healthline)

Man City trounce Newcastle to open up three-point lead
Newcastle United’s Matt Targett in action with Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling.
MANCHESTER, MAY 8 (AGENCIES): Manchester City reclaimed top spot in the Premier League with a 5-0 drubbing of Newcastle United that allowed the reigning champions to open up a three-point lead over Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Raheem Sterling scored twice for the hosts with Aymeric Laporte, Rodri and Phil Foden also on target as they shrugged off the bitter disappointment of their Champions League semi-final defeat by Real Madrid. Sterling eased any early jitters with a header and Laporte’s tap-in gave City full control before the interval. Rodri headed City’s third from a corner after the break and Foden swept in his side’s fourth before Ster-
ling struck again in stoppage time as City took emphatic advantage of Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur the previous day. N ewc a s t l e ’s C h r i s Wood spur ned a great chance to give his side an early lead but the visitors were no match for City who took an important step towards a fourth title in five seasons. City have 86 points to Liverpool’s 83 with both sides having three games remaining and City now have a superior goal difference of four. Pep Guardiola’s side need seven points from their last three games to be guaranteed the title. Liverpool face Aston Villa on Tuesday with City up against Wolverhampton Wanderers a day later. City needed a response after their last-gasp heart-
break in Madrid and Newcastle proved ideal opposition in the sunshine. Things might have got edgy if Wood had found the net with an early header from Allan Saint-Maximin’s inviting cross but he sent a tame effort straight at City goalkeeper Ederson. City took the lead in the 19th minute when Ilkay Gundogan clipped a superb ball to the back post for Joao Cancelo to head back across goal for Sterling to nod in. Wood had an effort ruled out for offside soon after and City moved further ahead after 38 minutes when Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka spilled the ball and Laporte converted. Rodri lost his marker to head in Kevin De Bruyne’s corner after 61 minutes and Foden got in on the act when Oleksandr Zinchenko’s shot arrived at his feet and he diverted it in. City saved the best to last with a flowing move allowing an unmarked Sterling to fire home. Newcastle are 13th with 43 points -- an incredible rise considering where they were when Howe took over -- and are already looking at strengthening in the summer.
Champion Chadwick wins W Series opener in Miami MIAMI, MAY 8 (AGENCIES): Britain’s Jamie Chadwick made a perfect start to her bid for a third W Series title by winning the season-opening race of the all-female championship with a last lap overtake at the Miami Grand Prix on Saturday. The 23-year-old defending champion, representing Caitlyn Jenner’s Jenner Racing team, took the chequered flag after seizing back the lead from Finland’s Emma Kimilainen at the Miami Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium. Kimilainen, who had passed Chadwick before a second safety car period, then collided with Spaniard Marta Garcia who finished second. With the 2023 state assembly elections drawing near, the Wokha Village Like-Minded Group (LMG) and the well wishers of Shri YM Humtsoe Vice-President, NDPP, CEB, numbering around 450 supporters, inspired by the Clean Election Movement initiative of NBCC took on a similar call of its own while also appreciating NBCC for their wise insight. In this regard, the group organized a gathering on 7th May 2022 at Wokha Village to share their humble opinion as to why a clean election process is the need of the hour in the Naga society. It called upon every individual to exercise their voting rights with a clear conscience keeping in mind the consequences of electing inefficient leaders and the repercussions it has in every aspect of our lives. The group appealed to all concerned not to be blinded by the promise of short term monetary gain but instead to walk the path to greater good though hard the road may seem. It is never easy to take the road less travelled but together, united in good numbers and strength, the journey may turn out to be unexpectedly pleasant and the destination even more rewarding. Thus, the objective of the meet was to instill a sense of responsibility to rise above one’s selfish needs and never to settle for anything less than holistic upliftment of our society and that this can only be achieved through electing capable leaders. The event was graced by Shri YM Humtsoe Vice-President, NDPP, CEB, who expressed his appreciation for the group’s interest in spreading the message of clean election and also hoped to work together towards a progressive cause for the society. The group in turn complimented his visionary attributes towards the fulfillment of the goals ahead for the welfare of the people, and support his able leadership while extending the best of wishes for his future endeavors. The group further acknowledged that the program was made possible due to the bountiful contributions of his well wishers and thanked them for their generosity. db-389/22

(PTI) M U M B A I , M AY 8 (IANS): A clinical allround performance helped Chennai Super Kings thrash Delhi Capitals by 91 runs in the 55th match of the IPL 2022 at the Dr. D.Y. Patil Stadium, here on Sunday. An excellent half-century from Devon Conway (87 off 49) powered Chennai Super Kings to 208-6 against Delhi Capitals in 20 overs, after being invited to bat first. Apart from Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad (41 off 33) and Shivam Dube (32 off 19) also made vital contribu-
tions with the bat for CSK. Lower down the order, M.S Dhoni (21 off 8) and Moeen Ali (9 off 4) gave the finishing touches to Chennai’s innings. Anrich Nortje (3/42), Khaleel Ahmed (2/28), and Mitchell Marsh (1/34) were the wicket-takers for Delhi. In reply, the likes of David Warner (19 off 12), Mitchell Marsh (25 off 20), and Rishabh Pant 21 off 11) got quick-fire starts but they couldn’t play big innings for Delhi. In the end, Delhi were bowled out for 117 in 17.4 overs, losing by a huge
margin of 91 runs. Moeen Ali (3/13) was the star performer with the ball for CSK while Dwayne Bravo (2/24), Mukesh Choudhary (2/22), Simarjeet Singh (2/27) and Maheesh Theekshana (1/29) also picked crucial wickets. Brief scores: Chennai Super Kings 208/6 in 20 overs (Devon Conway 87, Ruturaj Gaikwad 41; Anrich Nortje 3/42, Khaleel Ahmed 2/28) lost to Delhi Capitals 117 all-out in 17.4 overs (Mitchell Marsh 25, Rishabh Pant 21; Moeen Ali 3/13) by 91 runs.
Wanindu Hasaranga’s five-wicket haul led Royal Challengers Bangalore’s crushing 67-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. After an unbeaten 73 from Faf du Plessis and a sensational eight-ball 30 from Dinesh Karthik took Bangalore to a daunting 192/3, Hyderabad’s batting order wilted under scoreboard pressure, crashing to 125 all out in 19.2 overs. They had some solace in Rahul Tripathi’s incredible 58 and some big hits from Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran, which didn’t prove sufficient to avoid their fourth straight defeat. H yd e r a b a d ’s start of chasing 193 was an unfortunate one, losing their opening pair of Kane Williamson and Abhishek Sharma for
nought in the span of first five balls. While Williamson was run-out by a direct hit from Shahbaz Ahmed with his bat on the line, Sharma was castled by a slider from Glenn Maxwell, rattling his off-stump. Tripathi brought up his fifty in style with a superb inside-out lofted six over extra cover off Mohammed Siraj and earned a reprieve w h e n Hasaranga put down a sitter at deep point. Brief Scores: Royal Challengers Bangalore 192/3 in 20 overs (Faf du Plessis 73 not out, Rajat Patidar 48; Jagadeesha Suchith 2/30, Kartik Tyagi 1/42) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 125 all out in 19.2 overs (Rahul Tripathi 58, Aiden Markram 21; Wa n i n d u Hasaranga 5/18, Josh Hazlewood 2/17) by 67 runs

But Alcaraz, who t u r n e d 1 9 t h i s we e k , showed resilience in the second set as he clawed his way back into the contest, saving a break point and holding for 6-5 before breaking Djokovic to force a decider. Novak Djokovic shakes hands with Carlos Alcaraz at the end of a men’s semifinal in Madrid. (AP/PTI) tomorrow,” said Alcaraz after the match which lasted three hours and 35 minutes. “I know that I played a really good game, and for the rest of the season I think I am able to play against the best players in the world and beat them as well, so it gives me a lot of confidence.” Alcaraz showed his all-round ability throughout in his first meeting with Djokovic, pinning the Serbian back with his huge groundstrokes and using his trademark drop shots. He struck 51 winners to Djokovic’s 24 as his aggressive style troubled the world number one.
Bidding for his second Masters 1000 title, Alcaraz will play defending champion Zverev in Sunday’s final. Zverev’s dominant serving proved too much for Tsitsipas to handle and he crushed a backhand winner on match point to seal his first career win over Tsitsipas on a clay court. Zverev said he was as impressed as anyone with Alcaraz’s ascent to world number nine. “I said last year in Acapulco that by Acapulco 2023, he’d be in the top 10,” Zverev said. “He beat me by a year! He’s an incredible player ... there’s no limit for him.”
Disciplined Dmitry Bivol stuns Last-gasp Alba volley gives Barca win away to Betis Canelo Alvarez to retain world title
Dmitry Bivol throws a punch against Canelo Alvarez during the heavyweight boxing title match. LAS VEGAS, MAY 8 (AGENCIES): Canelo Alvarez suffered a surprise defeat on Saturday as Russia’s Dmitry Bivol successfully defended his World Boxing Association light heavyweight title with a win by unanimous decision at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena. All three judges scored the fight 115-113 in Bivol’s favour at the end of 12 rounds as the Mexican was handed only the second loss of his career, nine years after he was beaten by Floyd Mayweather in November 2013. Bivol silenced the sellout crowd to take his record
to 20 wins from 20 fights while Alvarez, widely considered the best pound-forpound fighter in the world before the bout, slips to 57-2-2. “I’m glad I proved myself today, I’m the best in my division and I keep this belt,” said Bivol. “He’s a great champion, I respect him and all his team”. “If you don’t believe in yourself what do you do? You achieve nothing. I believe and my team believed in me. “I felt his power. You can see on my arm, he beat my arm up but not my head. That’s better.”
Alvarez, the overwhelming pre-fight favourite, was rarely able to find a way through Bivol’s defensive guard as the 31-year-old put on a disciplined display. The Russian regularly used his jab to keep Alvarez on his heels, unloading flurries of punches to redden the smaller man’s face and convince the judges to award him the fight. Alvarez had previously won at lightheavy weight, defeating Sergey Kovalev by knockout to win the World Boxing Organization version of the title in Nov. 2019, but Bivol proved too good to succumb. “You have to accept it, its boxing,” Alvarez said of the loss. “He’s a great champion. Sometimes in boxing you win and lose and I’m not giving excuses. I lost today and he won.” Alvarez stressed he wanted the pair to fight again. “Yeah, of course I do,” he said when asked about a rematch. “This doesn’t end like this.” Bivol, too, is keen to face off once more.
M A D R I D, M A Y 8 (IANS): Jordi Alba scored a spectacular volley in the last minute of injury time to give FC Barcelona a 2-1 win away to Betis. The result on Saturday night strengthens Barca’s second place in La Liga, while doing Atletico Madrid a favour in their efforts to qualify for next season’s Champions League, as it leaves them three points clear of Betis ahead of Sunday’s Madrid derby. Ansu Fati opened the scoring in an entertaining match with a deflected shot in the 76th minute only for former Barca stopper Marc Bartra to head home the equaliser three minutes later, reports Xinhua. The match looked set for a draw, but in the closing moments Alba gave Betis keeper Rui Sliva no chance with his unstoppable shot as the ball dropped for him in the home area. The day kicked off with Granada climbing out of the bottom three in emphatic style with a 6-2 win away to Mallorca in a game that saw the home side fall apart in the second half.
Barcelona players celebrate after winning the match against Betis during the La Liga football match. Luis Suarez, who later went off injured, struck for Granada in the sixth minute although Salva Sevilla’s excellent goal levelled the score before halftime. Sergio Escudero made it 2-1 for the visitors at the start of the second half and Antonio Puertas made it 3-1 before Antonio Raillo pulled a goal back for Mal-
lorca. However, the first of 40-year-old Jorge Molina’s two goals of the afternoon ended Mallorca’s hopes of a comeback as the veteran and Myrto Uzuni rounded off the rout. Valencia frustrated Athletic Club Bilbao’s options of playing in Europe next season with a 0-0
in the San Mames Stadium. Athletic had the best chances but Valencia keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili twice denied Inaki Williams, while Asier Villalibre rattled the crossbar in injury time. Valencia failed to have one shot on target in the game from open play. Levante kept their sur-
vival hopes alive with a 2-1 win at home to sixth place Real Sociedad, thanks to goals from Jorge Miramon and a Gonzalo Melero penalty in injury time. The win lifts them above Alaves, whose survival hopes suffered a huge blow with a 4-0 defeat away to Celta Vigo in a game where the side from Vitoria were never in the hunt. Thiago Galhardo opened the scoring in the sixth minute and Iago Aspas doubled Celta’s lead with the first of his two goals in the match in the 34th minute. Ximo Navarro’s own goal 12 minutes after the break made it 3-0 and Aspas rounded off the scoring with 25 minutes left to play. Three late goals in the last 10 minutes helped Cadiz beat Elche 3-0 to leave Mallorca in the bottom three. Alvaro Negredo ended the torment of the Cadiz fans with an opening goal in the 80th minute and Ruben Sobrino doubled their lead three minutes later before Choco Lozano added a third in injury time.
Jabeur beats Pegula to win first WTA title in Madrid M A D R I D, M A Y 8 (AGENCIES): Tunisian Ons Jabeur sealed her first WTA 1000 title after defeating American Jessica Pegula 7-5 0-6 6-2 in an entertaining Madrid Open final on Saturday. Jabeur had been in scintillating form at the claycourt tournament and the 27-year-old produced a determined display against Pegula to end her journey in the Spanish capital on the perfect note. Jabeur had a slow start, being down 1-4 in the opener, but took advantage of a handful of loose baseline errors from Pegula to make it 4-4. The first Arab player to crack the top 10 of the world rankings, Jabeur showed flair and fighting spirit as she saved a set point at 4-5 before closing out the set on her serve. The Tunisian, however, lost her grip in the second set where she was handed a bagel by Pegula, who recovered remarkably and looked unstoppable. Printed, Published and Edited by Geoffrey Yaden at G.M.
