ENPO rally for ‘Frontier Nagaland’
D I M A P U R , AU G 8 (NPN): Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) will be holding a public rally on August 9 to press for creation of ‘Frontier Nagaland’ state in all seven ENPO area comprising of Mon, Tuensang, Kiphire, Noklak, Shamator and Longleng districts. In this regard, several apex tribal organizations of Eastern Nagaland have directed all business establishments and educational institutions under its jurisdiction to remain shut from 8 a.m. till the rally is over. The decision, to hold the rally, comes after a joint consultative meeting of all seven tribal bodies and talk team held on June 28, 2022 at Tuensang Village. The house unanimously reiterated the demand for Frontier Nagaland State. It may be recalled that
Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation at its joint consultative meeting held at Konyak Community Centre Dimapur on May 27, 2022 reaffirmed the October 13, 2021 representation addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him including Union Home Minister Amit Shah to accord early approval for the proposed Frontier Nagaland and for early declaration of the same for the people of Eastern Nagaland. ENPO said it was pressing for its demand, in the event of the muchanticipated Naga political solution getting delayed or if there was any unexpected prolonged delay in the negotiations. The meeting also reaffirmed the November 9, 2021 ENPO Central Executive Council (CEC) meeting resolution to con-
tinue extending support for a unified, transparent and honourable Naga political solution. The meeting also resolved that the ENPO would appeal to all negotiators to conclude the Naga political talks at the earliest. Easter n Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation has stayed away from officially participating in the recent rallies organized by various organizations involving solution for Naga political solution as it wanted to focus on demand for ‘Frontier Nagaland State’. Committee (NPAC) has sent a clear message that public in Nagaland were determined for early solution. While legislators are looking at State Assembly elections in 2023 being held on schedule and as mandated by the Constitution; public in Nagaland are no longer inclined to put election before solution. Nagaland People’s Action Committee and several political parties have maintained that there was no basis for delay for solution, when official negotiations with all Naga political groups concluded on October 31, 2019. For the Government of India, the Naga political issue may have turned into a Naga issue that has led to three scenarios-- one for Nagaland, one outside Nagaland and one within Nagaland.

The Congress and Left parties too indicated on Monday that they would support such a move, intensifying speculation which has been rife for some time that a final break between Kumar’s JD(U) and the saffron camp is imminent. Announcements that MLAs of both the Janata Dal (United) and Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal would be holding meetings tomorrow have only fed the political frenzy in this highly politicised state. A day ahead of a key meeting, the Janata Dal (United) on Monday significantly said whatever decision is taken under the leadership of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will be accepted by everyone in the organisation. JD(U) spokesperson
K C Tyagi said, “Nitish Kumar is the undisputed leader of the JD(U)...Whatever decision is taken by the party under Nitish Kumar’s leadership will be accepted by everyone.” RJD national vicepresident Shivanand Tiwary said that convening meetings of legislators by both parties on Tuesday were a clear indication that the situation was extraordinary. He was also asked whether the RJD would be willing to forget bitter episodes of the past. Kumar had done a volte face and returned to the NDA in 2017 leaving a coalition government with RJD and Congress which he led as chief minister, high and dry. In a press release, DAABAPF informed that renowned churchman, Rev. Dr. Wati Aier spoke in the first session on “clean election: Church and stakeholders’ participation”, where he highlighted the dynamic role played by the church and Christians in bringing revolutions through the centuries. The church still needs to play the pivotal role to bring changes in the corrupted system of conducting election in the state, he stated.
Rev. Dr. Wati also quizzed where the church had gone wrong and emphasised on checking/reflecting on theology. He said that Christianity in Nagaland had become “a cultural Christianity” and that Christians were reluctant to take up social responsibilities. “The haves don’t want to stir up problems and tend to maintain status quo. In the second session, advocate Talitsungba Ao spoke on “clean election: Legal and pressure groups”, where he unwrapped the legal system and beacon the hope for change on the role
of church as moral educator. He said the church which believes on morality and divinity, must devise means and propagate for reformation from within and not from external pressure. Earlier, DAABAF president pastor Temsu Jamir implored the gathering to go with the burden for clean election. Efforts on to identify exact species of rescued exotic wildlife in Meghalaya Correspondent S H I L LO N G, AU G 8 : Wildlife officials are making efforts to identify the exact species of the eight exotic animals, including birds, which were rescued from a Guwahati-bound vehicle in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district on Friday night, a wildlife official said on Monday. The exotic animals which include two Hoolock Gibbons, two Grey Langurs, a Great Indian Hornbill, a Phayre’s Leaf monkey, an otter, including birds were rescued by Meghalaya police at 8th mile near Jowai, the district headquarters of West Jaintia Hills. Two wildlife traffickers - Kormola Bru and Michael Zosangliana - both natives of Mizoram have been booked under the Wildlife (Protection) Act and produced before a local court. “These animals are not endemic to India although they look similar to their Indian counterpart and probably were smuggled in from Myanmar or other South
East Asian countries. We are in touch with the Wildlife Institute of India to help us identify the exact species, but these are exotic,” Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (wildlife and biodiversity) S.M. Sahai said He said the rescued animals are being kept at the District Forest Office (Wildlife) in West Jaintia Hills and veterinarians are monitoring the health of the rescued animals. “The animals were being brought from Mizoram and were being taken to Guwahati for further transportation. We aren’t sure for what purpose these animals were being smuggled for. Some do keep these as pets, but mostly these are smuggled to extract animal products,” Sahai said, adding that investigation is on. Officials added that it seems that the illegal trade is being done by some organized gangs involved in the trade. “Prima facie it seems to be the handiwork of some well organized gangs,” another official said. The wildlife offices in
the state are taking the assistance of the state police, NGOs involved in rescuing such animals and also the Wildlife Control Bureau. “This huge sum involved in such illicit trade therefore attracts a large number of transnational criminals. In this particular case too, officials said that it looks like the handiwork of a transnational smugglers. “We are investigating it with relevant authorities,” officials added According to wildlife experts, illegal wildlife trade is the third largest illicit commerce after drugs and arms and organised criminal networks operate across the biodiversity hotspots in northeast India. No one is sure about the exact scale of the trade or its operations. Other than trafficking living wildlife animals, the traffickers also indulge in killing and extract animal products such as fur, skin, stuffed heads, teeth and bones that are used for many purposes, mostly in the traditional Chinese medicine market.

Attendance of members in the House also increased,” Modi said, adding a record 177 bills were passed or discussed during these five years. Naidu completes his five-year term on August 10. The prime minister said there is both depth and

Mumbai court remands Sena MP Sanjay Raut to 14-day judicial custody MUMBAI, AUG 8 (PTI): A special court here on Monday remanded Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut to 14-day judicial custody in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in the redevelopment of a Mumbai ‘chawl’. The court allowed Raut’s plea for home food and medicines, but refused to pass an order on his prayer for bedding. The judge said as per the prison manual, jail authorities make adequate bed arrangements. The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which had arrested the Sena Rajya Sabha member on August 1, said during the course of custodial interrogation, Raut did not explain about his involvement into the alleged crime. The release of the accused at this stage will hamper the investigation, the probe agency said in its application. “Being a very influential person, against whom allegations of threatening of the witnesses have surfaced, it is apprehended that he may tamper with the evidence and ensure the trail of proceeds of crime is completely obfuscated,” it said. Therefore, the accused may be remanded to judicial custody in the interest of the ongoing investigation, it added. Raut, 60, was arrested by the ED in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the redevelopment of the Patra Chawl (row tenement) in suburban Goregaon. agency did not seek further extension of his custody. The ED said during the course of custodial interrogation, Raut did not explain about his involvement which was within his exclusive knowledge, and gave evasive replies. The investigation into the case involving proceeds of crime amounting to approximately Rs 1,039.79 crore is at a crucial stage, it said. Further investigations are required to be carried out to unearth the entire role of the accused and involvement of other persons to identify further proceeds of crime, the ED said. The ED’s probe pertains to alleged financial irregularities in the redevelopment of the Patra ‘chawl’ and related financial transactions involving Raut’s wife and associates. During the earlier remand hearings, the federal probe agency claimed Raut received a benefit of about Rs 2.25 crore from the
proceeds of crime. The money was allegedly used for buying proper ty at Alibaug in neighbouring Raigad district. As per the ED, 47 acres of land at the Patra Chawl belongs to the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and there were 672 tenants living in the tenement on the plot. The Guru Ashish Constructions obtained permission for the plot redevelopment with an additional Floor Space Index (FSI), but no actual redevelopment took place till date. The tenants were thus left high and dry, as per the probe agency. Pravin Raut, already arrested in the case, is one of the directors of the firm??. The ED had claimed he was the frontman for Sanjay Raut. The probe agency on Saturday questioned Sanjay Raut’s wife Varsha Raut for more than nine hours in connection with the case and recorded her statement.

I have also seen him take up different responsibilities, and he performed each of them with great dedication,” he said. “There is both depth and substance in what M Venkaiah Naidu Ji says; there is warmth and wisdom too in what he says.” M o d i s a i d Independence Day this year will be celebrated with the president, vice president, Lok Sabha speaker and prime minister being all born in independent India. “And each of them comes from very humble backgrounds.”

HYDERABAD, AUG 8 (IANS): Hyderabad police have filed a case against a blood bank after its alleged negligence resulting in a three-year-old thalassaemia patient testing positive for HIV. The boy’s parents lodged a complaint with Nallakunta police station that the blood bank transferred HIV-infected blood to him. The child from Rampally village in Ranga Reddy district had been undergoing blood transfusions for the past 2.5 years at the Red Cross blood bank located in Adikmet. He tested HIV positive when the treating doctor suggested a blood test following the blood transfusion on July 20. The child’s parents sought a detailed inquiry into the blood bank’s negligence. The police have written to the Medical Board seeking its opinion and asked the blood bank management to submit the patient’s records. The child is said to be suffering from thalassemia since the age of seven months. The family used to approach the blood bank for blood transfusion every fortnight. His parents told police that they have been visiting the blood bank regularly for blood transfusion and every two months the HIV test was done. So far, the result was never positive. However, the doctors at the blood bank reportedly told police that on a few instances, the family had taken the child to other hospitals for blood transfusion. They also claimed that before collecting the blood from donors, they do several tests to ensure the blood donated is not infected.
NEW DELHI, AUG 8 (PTI): The Congress on Monday ter med the Enforcement Directorate summons to Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikar jun Kharge as an “outright affront” to Parliament and MPs, and said it is high time that presiding officers of both Houses ensure that it does not recur. The Enforcement Directorate had on Thursday last asked Kharge to appear before it in connection with a money laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaper. In a statement, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh charged that the ED summons to Kharge when Parliament session was on was done with the sole purpose of harassing the Leader of Opposition (LOP) and the Congress. He said this exercise of conducting a search at the office of the Young Indian by the ED could very well have been conducted in the presence of counsel authorised by the LOP for the purpose. However, the ED did not accede to this request and insisted on his presence. Ramesh said even though the House was

The amendments also seek to promote renewable energy and the
development of a domestic carbon market to battle climate change. It also seeks to introduce new concepts such as carbon trading and mandate the use of nonfossil sources to ensure faster decarbonisation of the Indian economy and help achieve sustainable development goals in line with the Paris Agreement.

Sports glory
ndia finished 4th on the podium at the Commonwealth Games 2022 with an overall medal tally of 61, including 22 Gold, 16 Silver, and 23 Bronze. The Indian contingent comprised of 106 men and 104 women in 16 sports. Of the tally, five medals were won by sportspersons from the north east in wrestling, boxing, judo, weightlifting and Race Walk. The states in the region which have propelled the north east into international limelight at the CWG 2022 are Assam, Manipur and Mizoram. Out of 12 sportspersons from the north east in the Indian contingent, three were part of the women and men’s hockey teams. The remaining nine were boxers, wrestlers, weightlifters and judokas. Of the five medal winners- one is from Assam: Priyanka Goswami (silver in Women’s Race Walk) and one from Mizoram: Jeremy Lalrinnunga (Gold in Men’s 67 kg weightlifting). The remaining three are from Manipur, the region’s sports power house: L. Sushila Devi Likmabam (Silver Women’s 48 kg Judo), Bindyarani Devi (Silver Women’s 55 kg weightlifting) and Mirabai Chanu (Gold Women’s 49 kg weightlifting). The other sportspersons from the north east narrowly missed winning a medal included- Assam’s Hima Das (women’s 4x100 relay), Shiva Thapa (men’s 63.5 kg boxing), Lovlina Borgohain (women’s 70 kg boxing) and Popy Hazarika (women’s 59 kg weightlifting). The others who participated as members of hockey teams included Manipur’s Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam (women), Nilakanta Sharma (men); Chanam Rishikanta Singh (weightlifting) and Mizoram’s Lalremsiami (women hockey). As mentioned, the North East comprises of just 45 million people, that make up 3.76 % of India’s population. The ascendency of sportspersons from the north east began with Dingko Singh and Kunjarani Devi who were flagbearers from the North East in the 1990s. They were followed by boxers Mary Kom, Sarita Devi and Lovlina Borgohain, Mirabai Chanu, Bindyarani Devi and Jeremy Lalrinnuga in weightlifting and Sushila Devi in judo. Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura did not have any participant at the CWG. Sports is not new in Nagaland as it has produced the legendary international Indian footballer Dr. T. Ao. Subsequently, Chekrvulo Swuro was a regular member of the Indian women archery team at the Asian Games in 2002 and 2006 and had won medals. Much has been said about promotion of sports in Nagaland during the decades but so far, the results have been quite disappointing. Even in football where Nagaland players used to be among the top in the North East, today the state is almost at the bottom among the eight North Eastern states. Manipur, Assam and newcomer Mizoram including Meghalaya are producing top quality footballers. The most glaring omission of sports policy in Nagaland is that the government seems to have accorded priority on construction of stadia and a few astro turfs but the plight of the sportspersons is unaddressed. Sportsperson are given a pittance as allowance for taking part in competitions which do not cover their daily expenses. On the other hand, several hundred crore rupees are spent for construction of a few substandard stadia. The efforts to promote sports has become lopsided as too much money is being provided for infrastructure while too little is being given for sportsperson in the form of significant scholarship and sponsorship. This is like focusing too much on construction of palatial office buildings while nothing is done to incentivize office workers to upgrade and improve efficiency and output.
DailyDevotion Prayer in the Father’s Honor
…that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. —Luke 1:35 If the Son of God has been born into my human flesh, then am I allowing His holy innocence, simplicity, and oneness with the Father the opportunity to exhibit itself in me? What was true of the Virgin Mary in the history of the Son of God’s birth on earth is true of every saint. God’s Son is born into me through the direct act of God; then I as His child must exercise the right of a child— the right of always being face to face with my Father through prayer. Do I find myself continually saying in amazement to the commonsense part of my life, “Why did you want me to turn here or to go over there? ‘Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?’ ” (Luke 2:49). Whatever our circumstances may be, that holy, innocent, and eternal Child must be in contact with His Father. Am I simple enough to identify myself with my Lord in this way? Is He having His wonderful way with me? Is God’s will being fulfilled in that His Son has been formed in me (see Galatians 4:19), or have I carefully pushed Him to one side? Oh, the noisy outcry of today! Why does everyone seem to be crying out so loudly? People today are crying out for the Son of God to be put to death. There is no room here for God’s Son right now— no room for quiet, holy fellowship and oneness with the Father. Is the Son of God praying in me, bringing honor to the Father, or am I dictating my demands to Him? Is He ministering in me as He did in the time of His manhood here on earth? Is God’s Son in me going through His passion, suffering so that His own purposes might be fulfilled? The more a person knows of the inner life of God’s most mature saints, the more he sees what God’s purpose really is: to “…fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ…” (Colossians 1:24). And when we think of what it takes to “fill up,” there is always something yet to be done.

Post-mortem
Digital empowerment of agriculture
A
griculture is one of the oldest and most important professions in the world which is critical for human survival. Globally, the cultivation area is shrinking due to the spread of cities and industries, depleting water resources, changing and unpredictable climate patterns, and falling farm incomes. India, in addition to these global challenges, also face distinct challenges that are domestic in nature. Most of the agricultural decisions regarding sowing, choice of crops, amount of fertilizer and irrigation, harvesting, etc. are not based on data analytics inputs. The Government of India had implemented relevant policies and programmes at various times to improve farm productivity and incomes. Many ICT initiatives have been implemented by the Government to address these challenges and to further support the rollout and adoption of agricultural policies and programmes. ICT initiatives started with standalone systems implemented in earlier days, to advanced web-based pan-India systems and now the focus is moving to advanced technologies like AI, IoT, etc. The Government has also come up with different expert systems which will help in determining marketing alternatives and optimal strategies for farmers. Sustainable benefits of these initiatives coupled with
innovative use of emerging technologies will help in achieving the vision of Doubling Farmers’ Income (DFI) in the future. Agriculture in India is taking advantage of emerging technologies like IoT, AI, Data Analytics, Blockchain, Remote Sensing, and GIS which can significantly contribute to the growth of the sector. Artificial Intelligence Systems can be used for the identification and control of pests. Information on symptoms and pictures of pests and diseases can be fed into the system. Based on the picture posted of the insect and disease, the system can match and identify the disease and suggest remedial actions. AI can also be used for identifying patterns and factors affecting market dynamics and making predictions about prices, sending alerts in case of scarcity or paucity of a particular commodity, or sudden increase or fall in the prices. Similarly, IoT can send signals and triggers about the precise input requirement for precision farming. It can be used for water management as well. Blockchain Technology can be used for tracing agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and organic products. The application of Data Analytics has already demonstrated significant value and can be used to analyse market trends, usage of fertilizers,
distribution of inputs and availability, etc. Further, Remote Sensing and GIS are very crucial technologies having a wide range of applications to tackle issues related to soil, climate & topography. These technologies have manifold applications in agriculture including crop differentiation, crop growth monitoring, stress detection, crop inventory, soil moisture estimation, precision agriculture, crop acreage estimation, and yield prediction. National Informatics Centre (NIC), Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology(MeitY)has been conributing with its many flagship products like (a) Pradhan Mantri KIsan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) portal and mobile app used to transfer the funds directly into the accounts of the farmers identified by States/ UTs, (b) Integrated Fertilizer Management System (eUrvarak) a technology solution for the scheme Direct Benefit Transfer in Fertilizers, (c) Kisan Suvidha - a smart and integrated mobile app for farmers to digitally access all relevant agricultural services and information at one place – Integrated Mobile App for Farmers, Unified Farmer Service Platform, Kisan Rath, among others which have transformed the conventional ICT solutions in the agriculture domain. NPF rejoinder to RPP statement
A
propos a news item that appeared in the Nagaland Post, dated the 8th August, 2022 under the caption, ‘ NDPP has betrayed strong regional spirit of Naga people’ in which RPP leaders writes, ‘But with NPF rendered crippled and NDPP soon to be extinct, they observed that Nagas were entering an era of fear and confusion.’ While appreciating many of their other points, my attention has been drawn to their fear that Nagas are entering into an era of fear and confusion, because NPF was rendered crippled. I am assuring them that NPF was never crippled at any time by anyone. Rather defection of 21 Honourable MLAs had removed ‘trust deficit’ in the Party that every step we take now is based on ‘full trust’ with assurances. Therefore, I would like to bring it to the kind notice of our RPP leaders as well as our Naga people in general that NPF is now planning to face the next election (if solution does not come) with new initiative and new vigour with more new faces, giving more attention to the younger generation. I
T
admit that few party workers moved away along with the defectors but without impact. The party remains intact even down to the grass root level. With the Assembly election round the corner, time for number game among the political parties in the Assembly is over; but choosing the right people to represent the Naga people becomes more important. I have full trust on the integrity of our people and I can also see that Naga people want a change and, therefore, Nagaland will never enter into an era of fear and confusion. And for that matter, all like-minded people should come together and do away with present day light robbery system and to provide a real ‘Welfare Government’ to our people. Naga people must realise the present wide gap of rich and poor creating class system in the Naga society. This is a very dangerous trend which must be removed at any cost, because we are born free in which all are equal. We believe that Almighty God will grant wisdom to the Naga people to make the right choice for our children. Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, President, NPF

The Nagas misconstrue honourable and acceptable solution
T
he Nagas talk about honourable and acceptable solution but many laymen including me are confused and could not precisely comprehend the phrase “honourable and acceptable” solution. According to the dictionary, the word acceptable is defined as: 1. Worthy, decent, sure of being accepted or received with at least moderate pleasure. 2. Barely Worthy, less than excellent; passable That means acceptable to both sides. William Shakespeare paraphrased it in his book “The Merchant of Venice”, as a double blessing, “for him that giveth and him that receivedst”. In other words, it is a compromised solution, as late Kevichusa, former MP rightly said, “no give” and only “take” is not acceptable and honourable solution. Secondly, NSCN (IM) claimed the government of India recognised the unique history of the Nagas. Infact, it is not only Nags that have unique history, but every state in India has their own unique history. Before India got her independence in 1947, there were 584 princely states in the Indian sub-continent, each princely state had their own unique history, culture, religion, language and dresses. This is the reason why India is aptly defined as “unity in the midst of diversity”. Therefore, we should not mislead the mass Nagas with the phrase uniqueness as coined only for the Nagas. The Nag people have been reeling under the scourge of political turmoil since the early 1950’s. They are already exhausted from
this lengthy political race and have been now earnestly yearning for cessation from hostility and to overcome mistrust among each other and also to clear the doubts and uncertainty that lies upon their future. It is understood that the agreed position between GoI and NNPGs is already placed upon the table of Prime Minister of India only to be taken up in the Parliament. The Naga people solemnly urged upon the peace negotiators to bring earliest solution-either with or without flag and constitution. Observing the present situation of peace talk, the question of sovereignty seems to be mirage and may not be achievable at this point of time. Therefore, the question of sovereignty be left to the future generations to pursue on the principle of non-violence and democratically. It is not we Nagas who said, no sovereignty, no flag, no constitution, no integration. It is the Government of India’s decision and they firmly stand on this principle. Therefore, let us not accuse each other on this issue. Let us ask what is possible and not what is impossible. Demanding impossibility will lead us nowhere. Even in the sight of God, He will not grant us what we don’t deserve. It is said God will certainly bless us, what we deserve, not what we don’t deserve. Recently, on 5th August 2022, the huge mammoth gathering of Nagas from all walks of life under the leadership of NPAC demonstrated their ardent desire for early political solution. They want peace. This was the voice of the people. Dr. Hokishe Yeputhomi
Just busy or productive?
e’re more than halfway through 2022 and it sure feels like we’re busier than ever before. These days it feels like no one has “free time” to do anything. We run late for meetings, grab lunch on the go, and get home later. Do you feel like you’re struggling to keep up? I can relate, so I’m working on becoming busier but more productive. The most productive and effective people are those that “enjoy their day” versus letting their day enjoy them. They work to maximize their time to be as productive as possible, not just busy. “Busy” versus “Productive” There’s a huge difference between being busy and being productive. You can be busy all day and still feel like you’re behind on achieving your goals. Have you ever spent hours clearing your inbox only to crop without having actually completed your goals for the day? How about clearing 75 % of your long to- do list without getting the two really important things completed? You were really busy, but were you productive? A Productive Person I like to think of being productive as moving the ball a few inches closer to the goal every single day. Imagine you are creating a side hustle blog and trying to construct a strong following. You want that blog up and running by Friday. As a productive person you might do the following Day 1 would include buying a
domain name/ creating a website. Day 2 would be devoted to strategizing your communication and branding. Day 3 might consist of writing the first blog post, and Day 4 would be lear ning how to upload it to your newly designed site. Boom! This is what it looks like to be action- oriented and result- driven. It might not be perfect, but it’s up and running. Just a Busy Person Think of the same script but this time rather of being the productive person you’re “busy” in doing something which is non-productive. The busy person spends all their time doing exploration, trying to learn all the possibilities, creating long to- do lists, and trying to make things perfect before they start. They can spend days with nothing tangible to show for their time and effort. Busy people tend to be over thinkers and they’ve an unbelievable ability to expand their tasks to the amount of time they’ve available. The busy person starting a blog would probably take three times the amount of time and effort of a productive person all the while complaining that they don’t have enough time to get anything done. Busy people tend to be great at “looking busy” whereas productive people are simply “getting it done.” No wasting time. No dillydallying and putting something on a to- do list to just look at later.
Consider it done. How Being Extremely Productive Sets You Apart Being productive is the core of every high rank achiever in the game. Whether it’s Warren Buffett, Oprah Winfrey, Tony Robbins or Jeff Bezos and also my favourite Jack Ma, they all have mastered their time management and turned extremely productive and resultsdriven. Being productive versus being busy will be the reason you hit all of your 2022 objectives. Whether you lean more towards the “busy” side or more towards the “productive” side, don’t panic. This is something you can change and get better with over time. We all fall into the busy category from time to time but, during those times, it’s important to recognize it for what it’s and move forward with action. Highly productive people are the go- getters of our time making their dreams their reality. They push themselves to be less busy and more productive every day. Try following the simple term of being Productive, yet highly effective and see how it can change your life forever! To conclude, let me leave a quotation that I always want people to know “Be busy but make sure that it creates something productive out of it.” Atsung Sangtam, Mentor, Updatelearning, Fellowship Colony, (sangtamtsatsung@gmail.com)
Stress management in educational institutions
he next few years will see the Indian education system trip and fight back to cope with the effects of the pandemic. Of all the sectors that are affected due to this unexpected crisis, Education system is worst hit. In January 2021 for the first time most students have stepped into a school in about a year, they have actually erased a few years’ worth of learning. Not only have learners missed out on the past year due to educational institutes’ closure, they do not remember what they had learned in the class earlier before lock downs. Existing figures tell
an awful story. The pandemic has not created a severe inequality between students at different income levels but has also worsened it. Even for educators today, this was a tough time. Many educators lost their job during the lockdowns and many of them all over the country have either been poorly paid or not at all. Classrooms today reveal the people inside them — restless, hesitant and absolutely not ready. The trauma from physical and verbal abuse may also be multiplied by factors like bereavement of family members, loss of family earnings, com-
pulsory migration, forced labour, and increased isolation. Strain caused by such hardship is evident in classrooms in ways that instructors are not entirely ready to handle. The way forward The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, in its chapter on Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) emphasizes on Social and Emotional Learning especially for kids in the age group of 4–8 years. It enables kids to pick up interpersonal skills, put into practice emotion management procedures, and develop a compassionate viewpoint. Social and Emotional
Learning must be pursued through with the execution of a trauma-informed academic approach. At its center, trauma-informed pedagogy enables teachers to recognize that trauma marks itself in unexpected ways. Increased apprehension, emotional outbreaks, bad temper, noncompliance, or incomplete homework and assignment, could all be ascribed to trauma rather than just idleness or disregard. Training educators in trauma-informed pedagogy is also essential, especially in a post-pandemic situation. Implementing such academic approach does
not require much time or effort. Creating a sensitive culture in classrooms can be incorporated into everyday teaching. Giving positive feedback and reinforcement, developing relationships with learners outside of academics all assist promote a direly required feeling of security. In addition, extra remedial classes, and joint decision-making help build answerability and ownership within students. Building bond with learners outside the limits of the schoolbook is also supportive in making them relaxed in the classroom. We cannot afford to continue the way we
have for all these years. Amplified drop-out rates, traumatic stress, anxiety, and decreased skill levels cannot all be fixed with good old-fashioned disciplining. The troubles the pandemic poses within the classroom must be answered with compassion. A kinder, more accommodating classroom is the only means education can put forward itself as the great equalizer all over again. Children who have been uncared for over the last year require care and support when they step into schools this year. Mamta Shukla, an academician in the field of management education

on BJP directly’: Chirag attacks 3 killed, 4 injured in stampede in Rajasthan ‘Take Nitish over ‘conspiracy’ accusation
SIKAR (RAJASTHAN), AUG 8 (PTI): Three women were killed in a stampede outside the district’s Khatu Shyamji temple when people waiting in queues tried to rush in as its doors opened in the early hours of Monday. Four others were injured in the incident on a day when tens of thousands of people from Rajasthan and neighbouring states were headed to the famous temple to mark “Gyaras” or “Ekadashi”. Sikar Collector Avichal Chaturvedi said close to one lakh people were outside the main gate, queuing up after the doors closed the previous night. The stamped took place a little before 4.30 a.m. There was rush to enter and a woman fell, triggering the brief stampede that also killed two others, according to officials. “Prima facie, they died of suffocation but the exact cause of death will be clear after post-mortem,” Chaturvedi told reporters. “The incident is unfortunate. The women fell due to the pressure of the crowd in their line. The lines for

alternatives for crowd management during Ekadashi as well,” the collector said. SP Rashtradeep said the Khatu Shyamji SHO has been suspended. “There was a heavy rush outside the temple. The pressure of people mounted as soon as the gates of the temple opened, which led to the situation that left three women dead. The situation was not handled well. Therefore, SHO Riya Chaudhary was suspended,” he said. T h e v i c t i m s we r e identified as Shanti Devi (Hisar, Haryana), Maya Devi (Uttar Pradesh), and Kripa Devi (Jaipur). Shanti Devi’s daughter Poonam was in tears. “We were all standing together in the queue when we felt a sudden push from behind and all of us fell. My mother died,” she said. Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “Saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede at the Khatu Shyamji Temple complex in Sikar, Rajasthan. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. He should stop blaming me for his party’s debacle. The Janata Dal (United) is, indeed, a divided house. RCP has been made to quit. But Nitish Kumar needs to be wary of people like Lalan and Upendra Kushwaha,” he alleged. Paswan mocked the JD(U)’s claim of Kumar having transformed Bihar during the more than a decade and a half he has ruled the state and cited the state’s poor rankings in reports of the NITI Aayog. “And when the NITI Aayog met yesterday, our CM refused to attend the meeting. It was an opportunity for him to air the state’s demands before the prime minister. In the process, Bihar suffers on account of his arrogance,” alleged the son of late Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan.

Superintendent of Police K Rashtradeep said a 63-year-old woman who suffered from a heart ailment collapsed. “Two women behind her too fell due to the rush.” Victim Shanti Devi’s brother Mangat Ram was among those in the queue. “The stampede took place as soon as the temple opened for prayers. Somehow, we managed to escape. My sister was old, she got stuck and died. Others from my family suffered in-
juries,” he said. Police have suspended the local station house officer. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed grief over the deaths. The collector said two or three lakh people have visited the temple, located 45 km from Sikar city, over the last couple of days alone. About 40 lakh devotees have come over the past fortnight, he said. “Lakhs of devotees visit the temple during the month of Phalgun every year and elaborate arrange-
ments are made for crowd control. We are now examining what alternative arrangements can be made to handle big crowds on such days,” he said. Officials said the number of devotees has increased after Covid restrictions ended. A fair is held at Khatu Shyamji on Phalgun Ekadashi every year. During these 10-15 days, authorities block the internal roads in the area as part of crowd management. “This affects the local people but we manage it. Now we are looking for

JAMMU/DODA, AUG 8 (PTI): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday carried out searches at multiple places in Jammu and Doda districts of Jammu and Kashmir against members of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) in a terror-funding case, officials said. Simultaneous raids were conducted at seven premises of JeI office-bearers and members in different parts of the two districts in the early hours of Monday, they said. “NIA conducted searches at premises of six suspects in Doda and one in Jammu in the case pertain-

NIA carries out raids in Doda, Jammu against JeI members in terror-funding
The searches were carried out in a case related to terror funding, they said. The case, registered by NIA suo motu on February 5 last year, pertains to the activities of the Jamaat-e-Islami members who have been collecting funds domestically and abroad through donations, particularly in the form of ‘Zakat, Mowda and Bait-ul-Mal’ purportedly to further charity and other welfare activities but are using the money for “violent and secessionist” activities. According to the NIA, the funds being raised by JeI are also channelised to proscribed terrorist organisations such as Hizb-ulMujahideen, Lashkar-eTaiba and others through well-organised networks of Jamaat-e-Islami cadre. “JeI has also been motivating impressionable youth of Kashmir and recruiting new members (Rukuns) in the Union territory to participate in disruptive secessionist activities,” the NIA had said.

NEW DELHI, AUG 8 (PTI): The Supreme Court Monday granted interim protection from arrest to Navika Kumar in connection with FIRs lodged against her over controversial remarks made by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma on Prophet Mohammad during a TV debate moderated by the news anchor. A bench of Justices Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli issued notices to the Centre, West Bengal government, and others on Kumar’s plea seeking quashing of proceedings initiated against her. “As an interim measure, no coercive action shall be taken against the petitioner pursuant to the impugned FIRs/complaints or future FIRs/ complaints which may be registered with respect to the broadcast of May 26”, the bench said. US-China relationship unlikely China continues military drills around Taiwan to improve soon: Singapore PM
BEIJING, AUG 8 (PTI): China on Monday continued its unprecedented military drills around Taiwan, extending the schedule of war games launched in retaliation to the visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the breakaway island which Beijing claims is part of its territory. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theatre Command, which oversees Taiwan, said on Monday it would continue drills in waters near Taiwan island, focusing on antisubmarine and air-to-ship strikes, state-run Global Times reported. The PLA conducted joint drills involving all wings of its armed forces in six areas around the island from August 4 to 7. The PLA’s latest announcement notice did not specify the location of the exercises nor did it mention when they would end. The PLA on Sunday proceeded with the plan and continued realistic combatscenario joint exercises in the sea and air space around the island of Taiwan practic-

ing island capturing drills and bomber deterrence flights in Taiwan Strait, a rehearsal for real operation, state-run Global Times reported on Sunday. The PLA Command in a late last night press release said its forces continued its joint combat training exercises as scheduled on Sunday in the waters and airspace around the Taiwan island. The focus on Sunday was set on testing the capabilities of using joint fires to strike land targets and striking long-range air
targets, an early Monday state-run Xinhua news agency report said. The air force under the theatre command deployed multiple types of warplanes, including early warning aircraft, bombers, jamming aircraft, fighter-bombers and fighter jets, to conduct drills on such combat missions as joint reconnaissance, airspace control operation, strikes on ground targets, and air support and cover. Supported by naval and air combat systems, the air strike forces, together with long-range multiple
launch rocket systems and conventional missile troops, conducted drills of joint precision strikes on targets. Multiple bomber formations flew across the Taiwan Strait from north to south and from south to north, while several fighter jets conducted joint drills with destroyers and frigates. The operation has tested the tactics of systems warfare under informationbased conditions, and honed and improved the capabilities to destroy crucial island targets with precision strikes, Zhang Zhi, an air force officer of the PLA Eastern Theatre Command, said according to the report. During the four-day exercises, several batches of multiple types of warplanes attached to the PLA Eastern Theatre Command conducted systematic island attack drills, with the focus being honing the joint land attack and long-range air strike capabilities, the PLA Eastern Theatre Command said. While there is no official announcement here on ending the drills, reports
said the PLA is reviewing the impact of the unprecedented war games involving all wings of its military as questions remained about its next move, heightening Beijing’s dilemma over the future course of action. In the last four days, the Chinese military flew hundreds of planes, drones and fired missiles with different ranges which Taiwan termed as simulated attacks and appealed for international help. China also suspended a range of defence and military exchanges with the US besides imposing sanctions on Pelosi as part of a slew of countermeasures to protest against her trip to Taipei on Tuesday and Wednesday that infuriated Beijing, which saw it as a violation of the one-China policy. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has threatened to annex it by force if necessary. The two sides split in 1949 after a civil war, but Beijing considers visits to Taiwan by foreign officials as recognising its sovereignty.
SINGAPORE, AUG 8 (PTI): The relationship between the US and China is unlikely to improve soon and the world is not likely to return to the low levels of inflation and interest rates it has enjoyed in recent decades, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Monday, warning that a “storm is gathering around us”. China has announced halting of cooperation with the United States in a number of areas, including dialogue between senior-level military commanders and climate talks, in retaliation to US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. Last week, Pelosi visited Taiwan, prompting Beijing to hold military exercises in waters around the self-ruled island. “Around us, a storm is gathering. US-China relations are worsening, with intractable issues, deep suspicions and limited engagement between them,”
Lee Hsien Loong
said Lee in his National Day message. Singaporeans also have to be prepared that the region may not be as peaceful and stable as it has been so far, he said on the eve of Singapore’s 57th National Day. He said the world is not likely to return to the low levels of inflation and interest rates it has enjoyed in recent decades. While Singapore has weathered the test of the COVID-19 pandemic, the road ahead will not be easy and Singaporeans have to stand united, Lee said. “Singapore will be buffeted by intense rivalry

Staying united is key to Singapore’s survival – it is the only way to deal with challenges in an increasingly troubled world,” he said. Lee said Singapore must maintain a strong and credible Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and Home Team. “We must also brace ourselves and be psychologically prepared that in the next decades our region may not be as peaceful and stable as it has been thus far,” he said.
Pak top probe agency to trace those Fragile cease-fire between Israel, Gaza militants holding behind online campaign against Army ISLAMABAD, AUG 8 (PTI): Pakistan’s top investigation body has constituted a four-member team to trace and nab those involved in an anti-Army social media campaign that the security establishment “orchestrated” a recent helicopter crash, in which six senior military officers were killed, to gain sympathy. A top Pakistan Army general and five senior militar y officials were killed when their Mi-17 helicopter crashed due to bad weather while on a flood relief operation in troubled Balochistan province on August 1. Some social media tweets after the crash suggested that the
crash was “orchestrated” through conspiracy by the country’s security establishment to gain sympathy. The Pakistan Army was shocked, first due to the crash which cost it the head of the country’s key XII Corps headquartered at Quetta along with five other officers and a soldier, and second the negative campaign on social media. The six individuals on board included the Commander XII Corps Lt Gen Sarfraz Ali. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) sprang into action after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Sunday that belittling and ridiculing the sacrifices of martyrs was

Top TTP commander Khorasani, 3 others killed in mysterious blast ISLAMABAD, AUG 8 (PTI): A top commander of the outlawed Tehreeke-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Omar Khalid Khorasani and three other top militant leaders have been killed in a mysterious blast in eastern Afghanistan’s Paktika province, a Pakistani media report said on Monday. A vehicle carrying senior commanders of the militant group, including Khorasani, was on Sunday targeted with a mysterious explosive device, according to Afghan officials and local sources, The Express Tribune newspaper reported. The top militants were travelling in the Birmal district of the province for a meeting when their vehicle hit a roadside mine, the report said. All aboard the vehicle, also carrying other TTP commanders such as Abdul Wali Mohmand, Mufti Hassan, and Hafiz Dawlat Khan, were killed in the explosion, The Express Tribune quoted a senior
1 killed, 122 injured in Cuba fuel storage facility H AVA N A , A U G 8 (IANS): One person was killed and 122 others were injured after a massive fire triggered a series of explosions at a fuel storage facility in Cuba’s port of Matanzas, the Ministry of Public Health said, adding that 16 people were still unaccounted for. A crude oil tank at the facility was engulfed in a huge blaze following a lightning strike at 7 p.m. on August 5, reports Xinhua news agency.
The fire reached a second tank on the next morning and triggered a series of explosions. The first tank hit by lightning was at half capacity, with about 25,000 cubic liters of crude. Local authorities said the lightning rod system failed to prevent the fire. Cuban firefighters were joined by Mexican and Venezuelan experts on Sunday to extinguish the blaze that was still spreading.

Afghan official as saying. According to a local source, the TTP leaders were travelling “for consultation” when their vehicle hit a roadside mine on Sunday. Khorasani, who belonged to the Mohmand tribal district, was considered a top member of the TTP -- the militant group which wants to impose the law of Sharia across Pakistan. Khorasani, who carried a bounty of Rs 10 million on his head. Hafiz Dawlat from the Orakzai tribal district was an important member of the group and a close trustee of Khorasani, while Mufti
Hassan hailed from the Malakand division and pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr alBaghdadi, the deceased leader of the Islamic State terrorist organisation. TTP intelligence chief Abdul Rashid alias Uqabi Bajauri was also killed in a landmine blast in Kunar province of Afghanistan on Sunday morning, according to local Afghan sources. The TTP is yet to confirm these targeted killings of its top commanders, an incident that would certainly undermine the Afghan Taliban-brokered peace negotiations between the TTP and the Pakistan government. The news comes after the outlawed group and Pakistan reached a deadlock during their talks as the outfit refused to budge from its demand for the reversal of the merger of the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, the report said.

were killed, including 15 children and four women, and 311 were wounded, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. Islamic Jihad said 12 of those killed were militants and Israel said some of the dead were killed by misfired rockets.
Israel on Monday said it was partially reopening crossings into Gaza for humanitarian needs and would fully open them if calm was maintained. Fuel trucks were seen entering a cargo crossing for the first time since crossings with the
strip were closed last week, prompting a fuel shortage that ground Gaza’s lone power plant to a halt on Saturday. The plant was set to resume full operations later Monday. Gaza suffers from a chronic power crisis. Life for hundreds of thousands of Israelis was disrupted during the violence. Security precautions imposed in recent days on residents of southern Israel were being gradually lifted Monday, the military said. Both sides boasted of their successes. Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Sunday, Islamic Jihad leader Ziad al-Nakhalah said the militant group remained strong, despite losing two of its leaders. “This is a victory for Islamic Jihad,” he said. Despite that claim, the group undoubtedly sus-
tained a blow during Israel’s fierce offensive. Beyond losing the two leaders, it reduced its arsenal by firing hundreds of rockets without striking a single Israeli, thanks to Israel’s missile defense system that shot most of them down. Its own rockets may have killed several Gazans, according to Israel. The cease-fire deal contained a promise that Egypt would work for the release of two senior Islamic Jihad detainees held by Israel, but there were no guarantees this would happen. The weekend fighting was also bound to complicate Islamic Jihad’s relations with Hamas. A senior Israeli diplomatic official said the offensive had taken Islamic Jihad’s capabilities back “decades.”

The Turkey-flagged Polarnet docked at Derince port in the Gulf of Izmit after setting off from Chornomorsk on Aug. 5 laden with 12,000 tons of corn. “This sends a message of hope to every family in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia: Ukraine won’t abandon you,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted. “If Russia sticks to its obligations, the ‘grain corridor’ will keep maintaining global food security.” A total of 10 ships have now been authorized to sail under the grain deal between Ukraine and Russia, which was brokered by Turkey and the United Nations — eight outbound and two headed for Ukraine.
horrifying. Hours after the premier’s tweet, Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed that the FIA will lead the efforts to blunt the campaign unleashed on social media. She said that the FIA’s additional director general of the cybercrime wing Mohammad Jaffar and director (cybercrime, north) Waqaruddin Saeed and two more officials would be the members of the team. Though it is not exactly known who was mentoring the campaign, Pakistan’s ruling coalition blamed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and its chief Imran Khan.
GAZA CITY, AUG 8 (AP): A fragile cease-fire deal to end nearly three days of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza held into Monday morning - a sign the latest round of violence may have abated. The flare-up was the worst fighting between Israel and Gaza militant groups since Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers fought an 11day war last year, adding to the destruction and misery that have plagued blockaded Gaza for years. Since Friday, Israeli aircraft had pummelled targets in Gaza while the Iranbacked Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group fired hundreds of rockets at Israel. How to relieve tired eyes

P ing could help to ease eyestrain. Cup your palms over your closed eyes, putting no pressure on your eyeballs. The idea is that this can help to relax your eyes. Change Your Computer Setup Small tweaks can make a big difference to your eyes. Make sure your screen is about arm’s length (20-26 inches) away from your face. The center of the screen should be slightly below eye level (4-5 inches). It helps to have a chair you can move up and down. Adjust the text size so you don’t squint. And try a document holder next to your monitor for printed papers. This limits how much you move your eyes back and forth. Try Tea Bags Tea bags are good for more than a hot drink. They also work as a relaxing cold compress for your eyes. After you’ve brewed chamomile or regular tea, put the bags in a clean container in the fridge. Once they’ve cooled, put them on your eyelids to help soothe your eyes and reduce swelling. Make sure you’ve washed your face and hands well and taken out your contacts. And don’t get any tea in your eyes. Do Eye Exercises Your eyes have muscles, and they can benefit from a workout, too. Try this: Hold your finger a few inches from your eyes and focus on it. Then, focus far into the distance, then back on your finger. Repeat a few times. Or, close your
eyes, roll them up toward the ceiling, then down toward the floor. Look to the right, then left. These exercises may help ease eye fatigue. But they won’t actually make your eye muscles stronger. Take Screen Breaks Experts say that when you use a digital device, you should take regular screen breaks. They recommend the 20-20-20 rule. Take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes. Another tip: for every 2 hours of screen time, rest your eyes for 15 minutes. Improve Your Air Quality When your eyes are dry, they feel more tired. Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air and your eyes. A humidity level of at least 45% is best. Also, adjust your thermostat or move away from vents so dry air doesn’t blow on your face. If you smoke, think hard about quitting. Try Artificial or Real Tears Over-the-counter or prescription eye drops relieve dry, tired eyes. Use them even when your eyes feel fine to keep them moisturized and stop your symptoms from coming back. Or, if you prefer to make natural tears, remember to blink more often, especially when you’re on a digital device. We usually blink 15 times in a minute. But when we’re on a computer, that drops to 5-7 times. Medically reviewed by Poonam Sachdev

p p l y a Wa r m Washcloth Try a washcloth soaked in warm water on your tired, achy eyes. Warm compresses can: Add moisture Ease pain Increase blood flow Relax muscle spasms Wash your hands before you start so bacteria doesn’t get in your eyes. Dip your washcloth in water that you’ve boiled (to sterilize it) and cooled until lukewarm. Then put it on your eyes for 5-10 minutes, or as long as your doctor advises. Adjust Lights and Device Screens Different tasks call for different types of light. While you watch TV, it’s easier on your eyes to keep the room softly lit. When you read, put the light where it’s behind you and pointed toward the page, out of your eyes. On digital screens, adjust the brightness to match the level of light around you. Also, adjust the screen’s contrast, so your eyes don’t have to strain to see. Wear Computer Eyeglasses With these prescription eyeglasses, your eyes can focus at computer screen distance. That’s about 20-26 inches from your face. Some have special lenses to help you quickly shift focus between close, middle, and far distances. Before you go shopping, understand that computer glasses are not the same as those that block blue light. Blue lightblocking specs may make you more comfortable, but they don’t always prevent eyestrain. Palm Your Eyes Eye experts link this technique to an alternative therapy called The Bates Method, named for eye doctor William Bates. He questioned whether glasses were the only way to fix a person’s vision. Research shows his method doesn’t correct eyesight, but palm-

Sportstar reported. The Norwegian striker stepped up to convert the spot kick, his cool finish sending Areola the wrong way to give City a deserved lead after an utterly dominant first half in which West Ham were rarely able to venture from their own box. City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne then defended a series of crosses before slipping through a delightful pin-point pass to Haaland, who timed his r un to perfection and slotted home with a fine left-footed finish in the 65th minute.
West Ham forward Michail Antonio had headed wide in the opening stages and De Bruyne easily cleared Jarrod Bowen’s freekick just before halftime, but the host struggled to make their mark on the game in a largely toothless attacking display. Manager David Moyes brought on Said Benrahma and new signing Gianluca Scamacca just before the hour mark in an attempt to change West Ham’s fortunes but Haaland doubled City’s lead minutes after and the visitor comfortably saw out the win.

CWG: Shuttlers, paddlers dazzle on last day; India finish 4th with 22 gold
BIRMINGHAM, AUG 8 (PTI): Led by the iconic PV Sindhu, Indian shuttlers owned the badminton arena by winning all three titles on offer on the day while paddler Sharath Kamal yet again reminded everyone of his class and awe-inspiring longevity with a coruscating show, as the country wrapped up its CWG campaign with 61 medals to finish a creditable fourth. It was expected that S i n d h u , L a k s hya S e n and the formidable pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy would end up on top of the podium but what provided the icing on the cake was the 40-year-old Sharat Kamal’s gold medalwinning show against an equally good opponent in Liam Pitchford. That perfor mance took India’s gold medal count to 22, which is four less than the 2018 edition, but this time the sport of shooting was missing from the roster. The shooters had contributed seven golds in Gold Coast’s 66-medal haul, and considering that, India certainly put up a good show. However, with the 0-7 hammering of the men’s hockey team by Australia, when at least a spirited fight was anticipated, the Games ended on a somewhat

disappointing note. The manner in which India caved in took away the joy of the silver medal it managed. India’s final tally read 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze and they stood behind third-placed Canada, which was far ahead with 92 medals (2632-34). Australia (67-5754) finished on top ahead of hosts England (57-6653). Coming back to TT, Sharath and G Sathian had lost to England’s Pitchford and Paul Drinkhall in the men’s doubles gold medal match, but on Monday, both the Indians had their revenge. This was after Sathiyan beat Drinkhall
11-9 11-3 11-5 8-11 9-11 10-12 11-9 in an exciting but nerve-jangling bronze play-off. Sharath outsmarted the 29-year-old nimblefooted Briton 11-13 11-7 11-2 11-6 11-8 to claim his second CWG singles gold after 16 years. He had won the singles title in the 2006 Melbourne Games. The superstar paddler will return from Birmingham with a rich haul of four medals, having won the men’s team and the mixed team gold, apart from his silver in the men’s doubles. With M o nd ay’s sensational gold, Sharath has taken his overall medal tally to 13 at the CWG,

since making his Games debut in 2006. The concluding day of the Games began with superstar Sindhu adding a CWG gold to her already bulging collection with a c o nv i n c i n g s t r a i g h t game win over Canada’s Michelle Li. The world number seven from India outplayed her 13th ranked opponent 21-15 , 21-13 in front of a packed crowd at the NEC arena. “I had been waiting for this gold for a long time and finally I have got it. I am super happy. Thanks to the crowd, they made me win today,” said Sindhu after the final. Later, 10th-ranked Sen came from behind to end

Ng Tze Yong’s giant-killing run in the competition. The 20-year-old defeated the world number 42 from Malaysia 19-21, 21-9, 2116. Sen was at his attacking best in the decider and led until the end. Yong tried his best to mount a comeback, but Sen was unstoppable. He conver ted his first match point following a long rally, leading to a frenzied celebration that saw him throw his racket into the stands. “It was tense at the start, I had to work really hard. Yong also played a great tournament. Congratulations to him as well,” said Sen after a hardfought contest. India’s star doubles
pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy won the country’s third gold from the badminton court with a straight game victory over England’s Ben Lane and Sean Mendy at the Commonwealth Games. The Indian duo won 21-15, 21-13. India thus finished a fantastic badminton campaign with three gold, one silver and two bronze. While the shuttlers
BIRMINGHAM, AUG 8 (PTI): The Indian women’s cricket team once again succumbed to the big stage fright to suffer a nine-run defeat against the mighty Australia in the gold medal match. Beth Mooney (61 off 41) made a strokefilled half century as Australia managed
to reach 161 for eight despite a spirited fielding effort from India. With 50 needed off the last six overs with eight wickets in hand, and Harmanpreet (65 off 43) in the middle of a special innings, it should have been a straightforward chase for India. H oweve r, I n d i a
found a way to fluff it as they lost eight wickets for 32 runs to come short in a major final once again. Sharing a 96-run stand after the fall of openers, Harmanpreet and Jemimah Rodrigues (33 off 33) were controlling the chase, but the latter’s dismissal triggered the collapse. Earlier, Mooney
and paddlers dazzled, Australia blew away India with their whirlwind speed and relentless attacks in hockey, extending its dominance at the Games. Since hockey’s introduction at the Games in 1998, Australia has always stood on top of the podium. This is India’s third defeat against Australia in a CWG final, having lost to them in the 2010 and
the 2014 editions of the Games. Nathan Ephraums and Tom Wickham scored a brace each while Blake Govers, Jacob Anderson, and Flynn Ogilvie also found the net in the lopsided contest. It was a far cry from what was expected in a gold medal clash as a dominant Australia pumped in five goals in the first half to take the game away from India.

(61 off 41) and skipper Meg Lanning (36 off 26) stitched a 78-run stand and once again it seemed Australia would bat India out of the game like they had done in the T20 World Cup final couple of years ago. The Indian fielders who are often criticised had a fine day in the middle. It started with a close run out of Lanning and included two fine catches from Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav. Australia looked set for a 180 plus total but India fought back in the last five overs taking five wickets for 35 runs. Brief Scores: Australia 161-8 in 20 overs (Beth Mooney 61, Meg Lanning 36; Renuka Singh 2-25, Sneh Rana 2-38) beat India 152 all out in 19.3 overs (Harmanpreet Kaur 65, Jemimah Rodrigues 33; Ashleigh Gardner 3-16, Megan Schutt 2-27) by nine runs
India settle for silver in men’s hockey, lose 0-7 to Aus in final
BIRMINGHAM, AUG 8 (IANS): The Indian men’s hockey team came up with a disjointed and dispirited performance as it went down 0-7 to world No. 1 Australia in the final at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games here on Monday. The Indians, who had reached the final for the first time since 2014, had to be satisfied with the silver medal as they found the Aussies too strong to handle and quietly accepted the spanking, coming close only on a few occasions to trouble the Aussie goalkeeper. Nathan Ephraums (14th, 42nd min) and Jacob Anderson (22nd, 27th min) scored a brace each for Australia while Blake Govers (9th min), Tom Wickham (22nd) and Flynn Ogilvie (46th min) contributed one goal each to the Kookaburras’ score.

Australia have never lost the final since the sport was introduced at Kuala Lumpur in 1998. This is India’s third defeat in the Commonwealth Games men’s hockey final. The Aussies went on the attack from the start and earned two penalty corners in the first few minutes of the first quarter. The Indian defenders stopped them on both occasions but once Blake Govers converted the penalty corner, the floodgates seemed to open as Australia led by two goals at the end of the first quarter and 5-0 at halftime. They scored one goal each in the next two quarters, reminding fans of their 8-0 win in the 2010 finals in New Delhi. India have never won the men’s hockey gold in the Commonwealth Games and they will have to wait for four more years to realise that dream.

Boxing: Ahlawat wins silver B I R M I N G H A M , AU G 8 (IANS): India ended i t s c a m p a i g n i n b ox i n g at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games with super heavyweight pugilist Sagar Ahlawat settling for a silver medal after losing to England’s Delicious Orie in the over 92 kg division final. Sagar, who was the fourth Indian to reach the boxing finals, was last in the ring and tried his best against an older boxer but came up short. The 23-year-old from Chandigarh started well against the 25-year-old Orie, the England national champion, as he won the first round, getting the nod from all five judges. and third rounds as the English pugilist came back strongly. Orie won the second round on all five judges’ scoring cards and though Sagar tried to counter him in the third and final round, it was too late. Orie was adjudged by all five judges, getting a unanimous 5-0 decision. This was Sagar’s first CWG medal as the Indians rarely do well in the heavier weight divisions.
