Farmers’ stir turns violent; Rahul arrested

Farmers throw onions and other vegetables during the protest on Thursday. Rahul Gandhi being arrested. (PTI) NEW DELHI, JUN 8 (AGENCIES): Violence flared up in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh after five protesters were killed in police firing with farmers blocking highways, torching factories and attacking government officials. At least 56 persons were arrested and over 100 detained in connection with the violence, police said. A two-hour relaxation period in the curfew from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m in the four police station areas of Mandsur city and Pipliamandi in the district passed off peacefully and Collector O P Srivastava said that it can be eased further tomorrow. SDM Mandsaur N S Rajawat said that the curfew

relaxation was made only for women and children up to the age of 10 years in Mandsaur and Pipliamandi. But as the situation improved the authorities decided to extend the relaxation for all. Hundreds of farmers have also decided to sit on an indefinite strike in Rajasthan’s Pratapgarh district from next week, the third BJP-ruled state after Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh to be rocked by crop protests after a drought year. Maha farmers serve ultimatum: The first meeting of the new steering committee comprising representatives of various farmers’ groups of Maharashtra on

Thursday resolved to amplify their protests if their demands, including a complete loan waiver, were not accepted by the state government by June 11. Farm protests have spread like wildfire across India’s food bowl states in recent weeks with a slew of suicides in neighbouring Maharashtra and simmering discontent in Rajasthan. The farmers complain of a lack of storage facilities that forces them to either abandon produce or sell them at below-par prices – a result of chronic underinvestment in India’s agriculture sector. Farmers in western Madhya Pradesh are pro-

testing since June 1 demanding debt waiver, higher minimum support prices (MSP) for their produce, among others. In view of the volatile situation, the Centre had rushed 1,100 personnel of RAF to the violence-hit state The Chouhan government had sought to cool the tempers by announcing certain measures, including a loan settlement scheme for those cultivators who had defaulted on repayment of farm loan borrowed by them earlier. Meanwhile, a political storm over violent farmer protests in Madhya Pradesh intensified on Thursday as Congress vice president

Rahul Gandhi was arrested and held for hours before finally meeting families of five farmers who died in police firing two days ago. “I am being stopped everywhere from UP to MP. I just wanted to meet the family of the deceased. Don’t I have the right? The MP government has created problems for everyone,” said Gandhi in Doria. Police stopped Gandhi and a slew of top Congress leaders outside Mandsaur that has been scorched by angry agitations with several vehicles burnt and buildings torched. “Modi cannot waive loans of farmers, cannot give them bonuses…he can only give them bullets,” Gandhi said. Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh on Thursday came under widespread criticism for taking part in a yoga camp amid the killing of five farmers in Madhya Pradesh. Mohan attended a yoga camp of Baba Ramdev at Motihari, his hometown in Bihar. When journalists sought his reaction over the killing of the farmers, Radha Mohan Singh advised them not to bother but to practise yoga.

Income Tax raids in cities; epicentre in Nagaland KOCHI, JUN 8 (AGENCIES): Sleuths of the Income Tax department carried out searches at some 30 premises owned by the Pandalam-based Sreevalsam group in the wake of suspicion that the group was involved in dubious financial activity, possessed assets that did not match with its known income, and operated businesses in Nagaland in the name of tribal ‘benami’ owners, reports The Hindu. According to the report, searches, which were going on at some 25 locations primarily near Pandalam and Mavelikara in Kerala besides Bengaluru and Delhi, followed suspicion about the group’s sudden growth in the past five years and the huge influx of money into its business, which varied from jewellery and textiles to resorts and even a school at Aranmula, said a top investigator. The officer said group chairman Rajendran Pillai was a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Nagaland Police, where he got retained on contract postretirement. “It is next to impossible that a government employee

has the resources to operate businesses of this scale, both in Nagaland and the rest of India. Their properties in Kerala alone are valued at about Rs. 200 crore and the group recently acquired some five or six new resorts.” The officer also cast suspicion over tribal persons from Nagaland figuring as stakeholders in companies of the group which were doing spare parts business, ran bakeries, owned fuel stations, and carried out civil contracts for the Nagaland Police. “This reinforces our suspicion as Mr. Pillai, who had joined the force as a constable over 30 years ago, is now in-charge of their transportation wing.” “While their IT assessment is done at Dimapur in Nagaland, their assets are mostly in Kerala. Considering that outsiders are not allowed to own land in Nagaland, co-opting tribals from Nagaland as owners of certain businesses there certainly raises suspicion,” the officer said. The group had five jewellery shops and their gold loan firm operated about 50 branches across the State.

Nagaland’s future not for sale: NNPGs No changes in Nagaland BJP Power shutdown in Dimapur for jungle cutting unit set up, says Ram Madhav

DIMAPUR, JUN 8 (NPN): Media Cell of Working Group (WG) of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) has hit out at the NSCN (I-M) for taking people of Nagaland for a ride in the post-August 3,2015 ‘Framework Accord’ by “promising imaginary political institution” whereas the government of India had made it clear, time and again, that breaking up neighbouring Indian state “to integrate all Naga inhabited areas” was out of question. WG said NNPGs reaffirm the aspiration of all Nagas to live under one political roof yet when the most essential component of the Naga quest-integration of Naga areas- was not on the anvil, the “profound sounding political terminologies cannot silence indigenous tribes of Nagaland.” Further WG said civil societies and tribes of Nagaland would have no hesitation to tell the government of India , that if the question of integration was outside the purview of the GoI-NSCN(I-M) talks, then separate and acceptable solutions be had for Nagas living in various Indian administered territories

without ambiguity. WG said while the government of India has made its position clear over the issue of Naga integration; the NSCN (I-M) leadership, “inexplicably continues to indulge in unrepentant theatrical politics in their nonexistent land call Nagalim.” According to WG, the church, tribes and intellectuals have pointed out the flaw in the ongoing talks for the last 20 years adding “a single political group cannot decide the political future of all Nagas.” WG reiterated that the Framework Accord signed on August 3,2015 has no mention of ‘Manipur or any other state’ which warranted a decisiveness from the government of India to understand the situation and address the aspirations of -1.Nagas of Nagaland,2.Nagas of Manipur,3.Nagas of Assam and 4.Nagas of Arunachal Pradesh. WG also hit out at NSCN (I-M) MIP for “churning out press releases” by names from proper Nagaland such as– Akaho Assumi, Elian Z. Lotha, Zeneituo Angami, Hukavi Yepthomi etc. “as authors worshipping the Framework Agreement.” (Full text on p-6)
