ENPO reaffirms Dec 2007 ‘historical summit’ resolution

DIMAPUR, APR 13 (NPN): ENPO’s Central Executive Council (CEC) has unanimously resolved to reaffirm and uphold the resolution of December 18, 2007 “historical summit” with all seriousness and continue to remain loyalty to the affirmation in the interest of peace and unity of the people of Eastern Nagaland in particular and the Nagas in general. The decision was taken at the second-day of the CEC consultative meeting with the Eastern Naga National Workers from different Naga Political Groups held at Dimapur on April 12, stated ENPO general secretary Manlang Phom in a statement. The first day of the consultative meeting took place on April 11 at Tsithrongse village.

On December 18, 2007, at the historic summit convened by ENPO at Tuensang Hq, the house resolved “that there should be no bloodshed, threats, intimidation or any form of violence within ENPO jurisdiction”.

At Tsithrongse village, ENPO has resolved to celebrate “the ENPO Peace” tentatively in the last part of October this year coinciding with the ENPO general session, the statement stated.

Further, ENPO has acknowledged the presence of all members at the twoday meet. The consultative meeting besides the attendance of CEC members, advisors, senior citizens, six federating tribal units and frontal organizations, witnessed huge turnout of public, who also shared their solidarity towards ENPO peace and unity.

NEW DELHI, APR 13 (PTI/AGENCIES): NSCN (I-M) on Thursday accused the Government of India of delaying the final settlement to the decades-old Naga issue.

In an interview with ‘The Week’ magazine, chief of Naga Army, Phunting Shimrang alleged that the Central government was trying to “humiliate” the Nagas by delaying the settlement.

“It is only after we went to China, that India woke up. Will India wake up only if the Naga army starts doing that again?” Shimrang was quoted as saying by the magazine. He also dismissed the suggestion that the Naga problem is India’s “internal issue”.

‘The Week’ said the interview was taken at NSCN (I-M) headquarters in Hebron in Nagaland.

Earlier, on the occasion of its ‘38th Republic Day’, NSCN (I-M) general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah reportedly said that the ‘Framework Agreement’ signed with the Centre had recognized NSCN (I-M)’s demand for territorial integration of all Naga inhabited areas in the region.

“NSCN has had consultative meetings with the

people on talks consecutively for eight times. The historic ‘Framework Agreement’ recognizes the unique history, the identity, the sovereignty, the territories of the Nagas. It also recognizes the legitimate right of the Nagas to integration of all Naga territories,” Muivah said in his address at Hebron.

H o w e v e r, C e n t r e strongly refuted as “erroneous” the reports that it had agreed to carve out a larger Nagaland state by taking away the territories of the states contiguous to it.

Rejecting media reports that the Government of India had agreed to carve out a larger Nagaland state, Home ministry in a clarification said: “Such reports are erroneous. It is clarified that there is no such agreement or decision of the Government of India.”

“The pact (Framework Agreement) had set the political parameters of the final solution,” officials said.

There was also protest across Assam and Manipur in reaction to Muivah’s integration statement, while some groups demanded white paper on the ‘Framework Agreement’.

‘Digital India’ exempted in Nagaland, M’laya, Mizoram Correspondent

SHILLONG/DIMAPUR, APR 13: The BJPled NDA government on Thursday exempted the Digital India Day to be observed on Friday in three Christian-majority states-Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram on account of Good Friday, an official said.

In a letter to the Chief Secretaries of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram, Niti Aayog Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant said on account of Good Friday the state government are facing an issue about organising Digi Dhan Mela.

“It has been decided that the Digi Dhan Mela may be held on any other date that convenient to the state governments of Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland,” Kant stated in his letter.

This decision came after the Meghalaya and Nagaland government have decided not to observe the Digital India Day in view of the Good Friday.

MTYO resents road renovation work

DIMAPUR, APR 13 (NPN): Medziphema Town Youth Organisation (MTYO) has expressed dissatisfaction over the road renovation work at Medziphema town (Zero point junction to SASRD, NU gate). MTYO said that the work was haphazardly done and the sanctioned amount was high when compared to the “unsatisfactory” work executed. In this regard, MTYO president Asazo Kuotsu, general secretary Mhasilevi Kuotsu, vice presidents Pelhubikho Yalie and Ato Krose, and assistant general secretary Thejangukho Yalietsu stated that they have lodged a complaint with the Legal Aid Clinic, Medziphema in October 2016 and received RTI copy of the said work order. MTYO said that the renovation was done only in visible patches/ potholes and even the repaired potholes not up to the specifications. It claimed that Rs.47,07,000 was sanctioned for whole stretch of road but the contractor could have spent Rs. 4-5 lakh as the road condition worsened within a month of completion, MTYO said. It therefore, vowed to fight for justice if the demand for repairing the road was not materialized.

NPCC lashes out at BJP-RSS, NPF Road to Intl trade Centre in DIMAPUR, APR 13 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has vehemently criticized the brazenness of BJP government at the Centre to continually disregard the sentiments of other religious minorities particularly Christians by holding events on religious/holy days.

NPCC media cell said in the midst of all these sacrilege deliberately perpetrated by BJP-RSS combine, the NPF government in the state and BJP-RSS continued to be inseparable partners.

It said in 2014 when BJP government announced observance of Good Governance day on December 25 (Christmas day), NPF took two good years to wake up from self induced slumber and put up a semblance of their existence only in 2016 against making Christmas day irrelevant.

After 14 years of misgovernance, the only notable achievement of NPF was facilitating the presence of BJP in Nagaland.

After the recent electoral success of the BJP, NPCC said the country was now witnessing the rise of fringe elements who have been taking law into their own hands to dispense street justice “that is no different from Taliban regime”.

Thus, making the BJP-RSS agenda of “one nation one culture one law and one tax closer to reality” it added.

NPCC also cautioned that Article 371(A) of the Indian Constitution which

shelters Nagaland would also become irrelevant once these laws come into being.

Maintaining that they (NPF and BJP-RSS) were two sides of the same coin, NPCC said supporting NPF was supporting BJP-RSS. NPCC further asked NPF to stop attempting to fool the people by sailing in two boats.

Taking a dig at BJP, NPCC said their rhetoric about their development agenda had been unmasked repeatedly. “The communal forces are at our doorsteps and it will be a matter of time they start invading our homes issuing diktats on what to eat, wear, follow, speak, worship and so on,” NPCC alleged.

In this regard, NPCC urged upon the people of Nagaland to “rise up to the occasion and reject these communal forces and their agents in the form of NPF before it is too late.”

DIMAPUR, APR 13 (NPN): Wolam Nyuking (Pangsha Old) Students’ Union (WNSU) has expressed dismay that even after more than two decades since the establishment of International Trade Centre (ITC) at Dan under Pangsha, Tuensang district, the road connectivity from Noklak via Pangsha to International Trade Centre (ITC) Dan remained deplorable.

In a press release, WNSU president, Puthai Lamhing, and assistant general secretary, Tsuming Meya, said the union took pride in having ITC (established in 1996), but lamented that road condition to ITC was “very disheartening.”

WNSU said the road between Hit-Tho and Longshing Mong, from km 23-26, has been totally

blocked by landslides since mid-2016. It stated that during rainy season the area remained cut off due to lack of bridge at Shiomong (tributaries of Zungki River) causing hardships to Pangsha people.

Considering the need of proper road infrastructure from Noklak to International Trade Centre Dan, the WNSU has urged the responsible department/ contractor to discharge best of their service as fund has been allocated.

Further, the union appealed to for completion of proposed work without delay.

Assuring to extend cooperation to the responsible authority for successful implementation of the proposed project, the WNSU, however, said it would not compromise if the work was not satisfactory.

The confidence of voters in the EVMs can be achieved only with introduction of the paper trail,” it had said.

“EVMs with VVPAT system ensure the accuracy of the voting system. With an intent to have fullest transparency in the system and to restore the confidence of the voters, it is necessary to set up EVMs with VVPAT system because vote is nothing but an act of expression which has immense importance in democratic system,” the Bench had said.

Chidambaram said the Commission had sent SOS to the Centre for funds to install EVMs with VVPAT.

A total of Rs.3000 crore is required to set up EVMS with VVPAT, the ways things are proceeding, it would take another 150 years, Chidambaram submitted. DIMAPUR, APR 13 (NPN): Nagaland police has informed that many bank accounts of Nagaland belonging to Naga people, especially students, were increasingly being used by criminals for their fraudulent activities. In a press release, superintendent of police (crime) stated that illegal transactions using those accounts were being done from other states especially in big cities. In many instances, police said it was being alleged that the bank accounts were being sold by students/youngsters to unscrupulous elements and big criminals for easy money without knowing that such accounts could be used to commit crimes.

“When a crime is committed by some persons using such bank accounts, the original holders of the bank accounts can be also implicated,” warned the police. In this regard, the police said the advisory had been issued earlier also but criminal activities using those accounts were increasing manifold.

Therefore, the police have cautioned general public not to involve in such activities. Students, who leave their place of studies after completion, have also been advised to close down their accounts unless they intended to continue using them. Further, it cautioned the public not to share their bank account details such as account number, ATM card number, secret pin number and other personal details with anyone because all the phone calls, SMS or email asking for bank details were done by criminals and not by the bank.

DIMAPUR: Government High School Diphupar has introduced biometric attendance system for teachers to check mal practices when the education department was grappling with teachers’ absenteeism in most of the Government High Schools.

Launching the biometric attendance system on April 3, headmaster GHS Diphupar, R. Nyimshio Lotha expressed the hope that new system would eliminate lapses in the at-

tendance system and would ensure transparency and accountability among the teaching and non-teaching staff.

He informed that it was mandatory for all the employees to register their finger print in the biometric device.

Under the new biometric finger printing machine, the employees have to press the machine two times a day so that their finger print would be recorded in the machine. It would ensure

punctuality, eliminate proxy attendance, track the employees working hour and enhance record efficiency, the head master said.

He further stated that the new system would improve the productivity and enhance the accountability of the teachers in executing their responsibilities.

He also said that by introducing biometric attendance system, the school has in the small way contributed towards digital India and e-governance.

She said commercial floriculture should be given more importance in order to generate income and sustain the livelihood of the flower growers.

Jamir said floriculture sector could bring revenue in the state and encouraged more organised management in this sector. She also stressed on creating more awareness among the people on the benefits and advantages in this sector.

Altogether 16 stalls were set up by 40 flower growers from across the state. Prizes were distributed in 11 categories such ferns and foliage, cacti and succulents, indigenous foliage and flowers, bulbs and tubers, orchids (indigenous & hybrid), bonsai etc.

Participants from Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung and Phek districts took part in the exhibition cum competition. The next flower exhibition cum competition would be held at Agri-Expo Dimapur.

DIMAPUR: Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) cleared drainage along Kalibari Road, Dimapur on Thursday.

According to DMC release, the council staff encountered problems in effective clearing owing to

various cables and pipes underneath the drainage.

In this regard, the DMC has appealed the concerned departments to look into the matter within one week.

Meanwhile, DMC Administrator, H. Atokhe Aye has appealed the public not

to throw solid wastes into the drainage as it obstructs smooth flow of sewage.

With the onset of monsoon, he said more instances of clogged drains could take place if such wastes were senselessly dumped into drainage.

He said the foot washing was a symbol of Jesus readiness to serve as a servant and this service was not out of compulsion but out of love.

The bishop invited the Christians to be strengthened and graced by the Eucharist and then to love and serve one another.

After the homily, Bishop wrapped a towel around the waist, poured water and washed the feet of 12 people (six men and six women) in commemoration of what Jesus did. It is for the first time that the Cathedral parish has the women for the washing of the feet in accordance with the change of rite suggested from Rome and practiced DGP Nagaland L.L. Doungel visited the Gurudwara on Thursday along with his officials during Vaisakhi also known as Baisakhi.

TUENSANG, APR 13 (NPN): Two-day training on “self-reliant” for the unemployed youth was organised by Chang Baptist Lashong Thangyen (CBLT), Tuensang, youth department from April 1112 at CBLT Tuensang with ABAM youth secretary, To s h i S a n g l i r a s t h e resource person.

The resource person deliberated on the importance of being selfsufficient and encouraged the unemployed youths to venture out into different fields.

He also briefed them on how to make solar water heater and solar dehydrator.

Chang Baptist Lashong Thangyen youth secretary, M. Among Chang, said the training was organised for the unemployed youth so as to make them self-reliant and to skill them.

He said the training also aimed to skill the youths so that they could use the solar energy to the maximum.

Altogether 35 youths from various churches under Chang Baptist Lashong Thangyen participated at the two-day training programme.

Imkong warns nonperforming staff

KOHIMA, APR 13 (NPN): Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Imkong L. Imchen, has cautioned that he would not hesitate to take necessary legal action for nonperforming and irregular staff and also warned of red-tapism.

Imkong said that there should not be a compromise with the rules and regulations of the department duty and assignments. He asked the officers to work hard to produce positive result.

T h e m i n i s t e r wa s addressing the officers of State forest department from all districts during a departmental meeting convened by principal chief conservator of forest and head of forest force, Kohima Nagaland, at its head office Kohima on Thursday.

Reminding the government servants that they were salaried for their jobs, Imkong asked them to do justice and improve their performance for the development of the society.

The minister also asked the department officers not to avoid being posted in interior or remotes areas,

JICA in Nagaland is Rs. 534 crores project and Rs. 144 crore state share. The departmental meeting was attended by DFO, forest rangers, HoFF and others officers from all the district of the state.

NSVC to celebrate ‘World Veterinary Day’ DIMAPUR: Nagaland State Veterinary Council (NSVC) would be observing “ Wo r l d V e t e r i n a r y D ay ” o n A p r i l 2 9 a t the Capital Convention Centre, Secretariat Plaza, Kohima.

A press note by deputy registrar Nagaland State Veterinary Council, Dr. L. Temsu Ao, informed that the day would be observed by organising a dog show competition and a special appearance by Dog squad, DEF, Kohima.

Nagaland State Ve t e r i n a r y C o u n c i l informed that the dog show, which is open to all, would start from 10 a.m. and that first, second and third would be selected from five categories i.e. pure breed, cross breed and indigenous native breed.

The department has informed that registration forms would be available in Government Veterinary Hospitals and Private Veterinary Clinics.

A technical session cum function would also be held where the best veterinarian award would be given.

All registered veterinarian have been requested to attend the “World Veterinary Day.”

Judicial officers asked to change their attitude

KO H I M A , A P R 1 3 (NPN): Gauhati High Court Judge and executive chairman Nagaland State legal Service Authority (NSLSA), L. S Jamir has asked judicial officers to changes attitude towards their responsibilities.

Speaking at the first All Nagaland Meet of District Legal Service Authorities organized by NSLSA at Hotel Japfu Thursday, Jamir reminded the legal fraternity that if they feel compelled to do their job then it would become a burden, saying, “there is nothing glamorous or exciting about going out of the way to help a poor and ignorant person whose solution depends on the lawyers”.

The Judge said the lawyers deal with the weakest section of the society, who is not only economically and financially poor but also ignorant of their legal rights, as they lack proper education on legal terms.

Jamir reminded them that justice was the product of the rule of law and the sovereign function of the state government was to establish the rule of law where the core of peace and order was discharged by the judicial system by giving effect to the rule of law.

In her address, secretary department of Law and Justice, Khanrinla T. Koza, said access to justice has been recognized as one of the fundamental rights.

She said to bring justice closer to the underprivileged

segments of society a number of innovative measures including providing legal aid to poor have evolved with time. Koza encouraged the judicial officials to achieve the objectives enshrined in the constitution.

Though legal aid camps, aid clinics and awareness programmes were conducted regularly, she pointed out that there was a need to create awareness on legal rights among public in general and actual way of getting redressal through the legal system in particular.

Sümi Hoho ‘baghi hoho’ & thanksgiving programme

DIMAPUR: Sümi Hoho held its “baghi hoho” (general session) on April 11 at Zunheboto Town and was attended by Sümis from every nook and corner.

According to a release

by Sümi Hoho general secretary, Vihuto Asumi, the public was exhorted by K.L. Chishi, former chief minister, Nagaland and who was one of the “brains behind the formation of the Sümi Hoho” in the year 1979. The hoho was also addressed by minister Kaito Aye, minister Vikheho Swu and parliamentary secretary, Pukhayi Sumi.

The session began with Bible reading and prayer by Zunheboto Town Sümi Baptist Church, Senior Pastor, Dr. Daniel Chishi, presidential address by Sümi Hoho president, Toniho Yepthomi followed by greetings by Western Sümi Hoho president, Zheshito Swu.

ood Friday is the most important and venerated event in Christianity where the message of the Cross remains at the core of the faith when Jesus of Nazareth offered Himself as a sacrifice to shed His blood as atonement for the sins of mankind in order to bring peace and reconciliation between the creator, God and his created, man. Why did Christ die? It was in keeping with God’s promise made in Genesis 3:15 to redeem mankind from the curse brought by the fall of the first created man, Adam and woman, Eve after they disobeyed God and fell prey to deceit. It is neither a fable nor a myth but a well documented fact of history testified by one undeniable secular source, the Roman historian, Tacitus.

According to Roman historian Tacitus (55-120 AD) Jesus Christ, was executed during the reign of Emperor Tiberius under Governor Pontius Pilate (Tacitus annals XV). This historical account by a non-religious historian and writer bears testimony to the biblical accounts of the crucifixion of Jesus at Calvary(Friday) and his resurrection(Sunday) as foretold centuries before God’s promise of sending the saviour. In fact, the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ is at the core of the Christian faith and without which, salvation that has been preached would have had no meaning and reduced to the condition of other religions.

Christ’s birth, death and resurrection were already foretold from the beginning which was confirmed by later prophets such as Isaiah (7:14) seven hundred years before His birth. What still remains the most moving testimony of God’s love was the humiliation, pain and suffering that Christ had to undergo in obeying God’s promise to free human from the curse of sin and death. He was mocked and scourged. He suffered hours of limitless pain, cycles of twisting, joint-rending cramps, intermittent partial asphyxiation, and searing pain as tissue was torn from His lacerated back from His movement up and down against the rough timbers of the cross. One endearing word that tells the whole story of the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is His example of forgiveness, even for the worst of sins or crimes. Jesus, in His death took the punishment to show God’s mercy so that we do not get what we deserved and by His grace, showed us favour by not giving us what we deserved. The message of the gospel is a promised fulfilled at the foot of the cross; it is a confrontation and not accommodation. Good Friday again and again reminds Christians of the daily confrontation against evil through the ways of Jesus Christ. The cross means confrontation with sin. It also means being crucified with Christ and the old worldly self and resurrection of the new life in Christ. The cross to the Romans, represented everything that was shameful and contemptible. Thieves, robbers, murderers and criminals were crucified at the cross. It was a sign of weakness, defeat and death. The cross of Calvary is not only a message of confrontation but also of God’s undying love for His creation; a sacrificial love. The followers of Christ need spiritual renewal and the power of God’s Agape-Love to reform society, gone haywire –spiritually, physically and socially- if Nagaland is ever to come out of its current chaotic state.

Cast your burden on the Lord… —Psalm 55:22 We must recognize the difference between burdens that are right for us to bear and burdens that are wrong.

We should never bear the burdens of sin or doubt, but there are some burdens placed on us by God which He does not intend to lift off. God wants us to roll them back on Him— to literally “cast your burden,” which He has given you, “on the Lord….” If we set out to serve God and do His work but get out of touch with Him, the sense of responsibility we feel will be overwhelming and defeating. But if we will only roll back on God the burdens He has placed on us, He will take away that immense feeling of responsibility, replacing it with an awareness and understanding of Himself and His presence.

Many servants set out to serve God with great courage and with the right motives. But with no intimate fellowship with Jesus Christ, they are soon defeated.

They do not know what to do with their burden, and it produces weariness in their lives. Others will see this and say, “What a sad end to something that had such a great beginning!”

“Cast your burden on the Lord….” You have been bearing it all, but you need to deliberately place one end on God’s shoulder. “…the government will be upon His shoulder” (Isaiah 9:6). Commit to God whatever burden He has placed on you. Don’t just cast it aside, but put it over onto Him and place yourself there with it. You will see that your burden is then lightened by the sense of companionship. But you should never try to separate yourself from your burden.

hrist became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name.” (phil 2:8-9) Death is not always physical or final. You die many times while you are alive. Your childhood, for example, dies as you become an adult. Your single life dies when you join another in marriage. And your career, the role you play in life, dies when you retire. Each benchmark of maturation requires a death of your former self.

Many, however, resist “dying.” A young person who won’t leave home after graduating from school, a laid off employee who avoids training for a different career, or an insolvent businessman who stubbornly refuses to file for bankruptcy are all indicators of a fear to let go of a phase of life that has ended. Because their identity is tied to a role, these individuals literally feel that surrendering this role is the same as dying. They don’t know who they are without it. Yet hanging on to a stage of life

Many of the most successful people in the world, including Moses, Kind David and of course Jesus, did not achieve success until their second or even third careers.

These individuals had to endure a death of the life they had been living in order to live the life they were destined to live. Moses, for example was a prince of Egypt and then a Bedouin shepherd before becoming a leader of the Israelites. Before he became royalty, David was a simple shepherd, the smallest of his brothers, and then a warrior.

And Jesus, because he did not start his mission until around the age of thirty, surely had some prior vocation. As a seed must die to become to a flower, you too must be willing, as Jesus said in Mathew 16:25, to lose your life in order to find it.

Death is a success secret because endings give way to new beginnings. Sometimes you have to let your hopes and dreams, your accomplishments and possessions,

and even your role or persona, die before your true mission and purpose can be revealed to you. If you have taken the wrong path, assumed a mistaken identity, or pursued a meaningless goal, to achieve your higher purpose, that part of your life has to come to an end. It must die. Your experience suffering, like when Jesus sweat blood in the garden of Gethsemane, when you resist the inevitable. Jesus had to die on the cross so he could fulfil his mission and rise on the third day.

Death is the ultimate mystery.

While most dread this event, it is after all a transition, a step toward a new life. While everyone will experience death eventually, not everyone will, as William Wallace said in the film Braveheart, really live. As a caterpillar must die to become a butterfly, you too must die to be born again into something more beautiful, radiant and magnificent. Jesus said, “He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live.” (Jn 11:25) Death is the secret to rising again.

While appreciating the effort of the Central Government to spread digital education, the statement said that such laudable effort should not be at the cost of the secular and inclusive fabric of the nation. “Unity in diversity” has been the greatest strength and asset of the Indian ethos and any effort to dilute it by infringing upon the religious sentiments of any group of people will only bring division and disintegration of national unity and cohesiveness.

The seemingly systematic and planned effort of some group to undermine and destroy the unity and integrity of India by sowing seeds of division and imposing uniformity and the cost of unity is detrimental to the progressive and visionary efforts of well intended leaders and they must guard and vigilantly disown and disassociate themselves

Why did Jesus have to die?

esterday, the Christians all over the world obser ved Maundy Thursday, the first of three Holy Week observances relating to the events surrounding Christ’s passion. Maundy Thursday marks the occasion of the last Passover Christ observed with his disciples, as well as the first Eucharist.

Today the Christians across the land observe the Good Friday. Two important practices are witnessed today, namely, ancient Christian devotion known as the Stations of the Cross and the recounting of the passion of the Our lord Jesus Christ. Participating in the way of the Cross and recounting of the passion of our Lord which takes place in the churches allow God’s people to unite with one another in an extended act of remembering the cost of their salvation. The passion of our lord recorded in the Gospel of St. John is a moving testimony to the final hours of Jesus before His crucifixion. Christians relive the event of the moments of Jesus; his prayer in the Garden of Olives, His walks through the street of Jerusalem, His appearance before Pilate, His scourge at the pillar, his carrying of heavy cross to mount Calvary and finally his utterance of the momentous words, “It is finished’. This is what we recall on Good Friday.

A question that is perennially asked by one and all is, “Why Did Jesus Have to Die? For a non-Christian or for an unbeliever the death of Jesus is absurd, unreasonable and unnecessary. However, for a Christian, the death of Jesus is redemptive. In the book of prophet Isaiah we read, “He was wounded for our transgressions ... by his stripes we are healed.”

(Is 53:5) These verse from prophet Isaiah summarize the event of Good Friday and the message of it.

The suffering and death of Jesus on the cross on Good Friday is an unbelievable demonstration of God’s sacrificial love for human beings. The cross truly does demonstrate and reveal the love of God the Father who sacrificed His only Son for us. God showed us what real love is by giving his Son to save us and making it possible for us to share and experience that love. 1 John 4: 9-10 reminds us, “God sent His only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as expiation for our sins.” Jesus in his own words expresses”For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (Jn 3:16).

This day is called ‘Good Friday’ not because they day was good for Jesus. It wasn’t

a good day for Jesus rather it was a day of soul-wrenching agony, a day when Jesus hung for hours on a wooden cross by the nails on his hands for our sake. We call today, “Good Friday’ because his death bridged the deep gulf between God and each one of us. John wrote his Gospel in Greek, and those last words of Jesus are just one word in Greek – ‘tetelestai’ which means, ‘It is finished’. Jesus is saying that his job of saving the world has been completed. He has won forgiveness for all people. Nothing else needs to be done. Salvation is complete. “It is finished”.

Therefore, in the cross God expressed his love in action.

The Christians are called to assess on Good Friday how well we return that love by loving God living in our fellow human beings. We are living in a world which is increasingly experiencing hatred, violence, persecution, fanaticism, division, lack of trust, prejudice, selfishness, marginalization, family breakdown, blatant denial of justice, marital tension, poverty, drug or alcohol abuse, polarization on the basis of creed and colour etc. We are presented with a society where crime against sacredness and human dignity of life is rampant. Therefore, it is the day to remember the new commandment of love Jesus gave us in Gospel of John 13: 34-35 “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another”. It is a call to to love everyone with no distinction and condition and see everyone as image of God and see the face of God in the marginalize and the suffering.

On Good Friday, Christians remember the Ransom Jesus paid for our sins. Sin is infinite offense and disobedience committed against, the Infinite Holiness of God. It demands infinite punishment. Among all the explanation given for the death of Jesus one that is truly credible is based on the central fact that human being cannot atone for his sin against the infinite justice of God. On the other hand, since God is just, he cannot merely sweep our sins “under the rug.”

God’s justice demands that our sins be punished. Not to punish sin would be unjust.

God is both just and loving.

Therefore, God’s love is willing to meet the demands of His justice. But only a God– man could do that, and Jesus made that atonement by his suffering and death. Out of perfect love for us, Jesus took upon himself the punishment we deserve. His willingness to suffer in our place balanced the divine “scales of justice.”

The debt was now paid. His love paid the price. His passion and death atoned for our sins and redeemed us. St. Paul writes in his letter to the

Corinthians, “For our sake He made him to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him.” (Cor 5: 21). Jesus brought us back to the state of God’s children from our slavery to sin by paying his life as ransom for our sins. That is why Jesus said, “For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

(Mk. 10:45).

Our freedom was obtained by the price that Jesus paid for us in dying on the cross. Hence, Good Friday is a day to show gratitude to Jesus our Savior by avoiding sins and making reparation or atonement for our sins by acts of mercy, kindness and love. Although it is not pleasant to have our sins and faults pointed out to us, the cross does this. When Peter preached his great sermon on the first day of Pentecost, he laid responsibility for the death of Jesus at the feet of his listeners and the Bible says, they were “pricked in their hearts” or “cut to the heart” (Acts 2:37).

But we are living in a world which has lost the sense of sin and which ignores the price Jesus paid for it. Carelessness is slowly creeping into the lives of his followers. Godly values are being replaced by worldly values. Everything is directed by the desire to grab for one’s own gratification and glory. The aspect of sins is slowly waning from the life of people. The prophecy of Jeremiah lamented this sad situation centuries ago, “No one repents of his wickedness, saying, ‘What have I done!’”

On this Good Friday, we are exhorted to show the good will and generosity to ask God’s forgiveness for our sins along with the Psalmist, “Have mercy on me, God, in your goodness; in your abundant compassion blot out my offense. Wash away all my guilt; from my sin cleanse me. For I know my offense; my sin is always before me.

Against you alone have I sinned; I have done such evil in your sight.” (Ps 51: 3-6) The Good Friday recalls the Heroic and courageous Suffering of Jesus. Crucifixion was used early in history by the Phoenicians, the Greeks and the Romans as a feared way of subduing conquered territories. The cross was the crudest instrument of torture used by the Romans to punish rebels and criminals, and the slow death by hanging on the cross was the most excruciating experience of pain in the world.

Jesus knew beforehand every detail of his coming cruel suffering, humiliation, rejection and death, but he welcomed it all wholeheartedly according to the eternal plan of God his Father.

Today, the challenge from the cross for us is to accept our unavoidable share of pain and suffering in this life,

deriving strength and inspiration from the suffering of Christ. By willingly accepting the most terrible sufferings of torture and the excruciating suffering and humiliation of crucifixion, Jesus teaches us that our pain and suffering have a redemptive value as his suffering and death redeemed mankind from the bondage of sin. It was in fact a condition for his disciples.

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow Me.” (Mt 16: 24). Therefore, let us learn to welcome in the same way the pain involved in controlling our evil tendencies and practicing more selfcontrol. Let welcome the pain involved in sharing our blessings sacrificially with others.

Let also welcome the pain and humiliation involved in standing for Christ and his teachings and principles.

Today Christians are reminded that Good Friday is the road to Easter Sunday.

While Good Friday is the day we remember the crucifixion of Jesus, there’s more to it than remembering. It is the road of Easter Sunday. There is no Easter Sunday without Good Friday. Many a times, people want to skip Good Friday because it brings sadness and gloom and want to go straight to Ester Sunday.

However as Jesus says, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it abides alone, but if it dies, it produces many” (John 12:24) To sum up, Jesus’ message surrounding the event on Good Friday was revolutionary in his day, and is still life-changing today. It was against all conventional wisdom that Jesus’ death took place. There is no justification for all what Jesus underwent, except His love for humanity.

Through this event, Jesus taught peace in an age of violence. He taught forgiveness in an age of victimization.

He taught humility in an age of spiritual arrogance and self-righteousness. He taught equality in an age of division and subjugation. He taught love in a world of hatred and violence. He taught truth in a world of lies and hypocrisy.

He taught dignity of life in a world of lack of respect for helpless and marginalized.

Today as we commemorate the passion and death of Jesus, we are called become of peace not only in words but in action in an age of violence. We are invited to become champions of unconditional forgiveness in an age of victimization and revenge.

We are called to become humble in an age of spiritual arrogance and imposition.

We are called to become agents of unconditional love in an age of hatred. We are called to become promoters of life and dignity in an age that lacks respect of life and dignity. Have a grace-filled Good Friday.

It is disheartening to see that your leadership has been blind to the many discrimination committed by the majority Hindus who never bothered the sentiments of the minority and secular fabric of the Nation. That in a short stint of BJP rule in the center with an ulterior motives- your government have grievously hurt the sentiments of millions valuable minorities.

That sir, It is unbecoming and pure discrimination by your government to have introduced the bills on the dates of importance for Christians Viz: 1. The declaration of Good Governance Day on the 25th December. The day when Christians around the world celebrates “CHRISTMAS DAY” , the most sacred day celebrated all over the world since centuries of its inception.

2.The declaration of Digital India on the “GOOD FRIDAY “ the 14 th April which is yet another most sacred day for Christians who mourns for the sacrificial death made by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to save the perishing world, observed by Christians around the world for centuries.

3. Besides your leniency towards those who commit crimes against the Christians and frequent destruction of Churches across India shows an unbecoming nature of you leadership.

That Sir, these few points mentioned above clearly indicated that under your leadership will unfortunately defeat the ideal of India as secular democratic nation as envisaged in the constitution of India and divide the once great democratic nation of the world.

New Delhi, Apr 13 (IANS/AGENCIES): India said on Thursday that the alleged Indian spy sentenced to death in Pakistan was innocent of the charges hurled at him, adding efforts were on to bring back Jadhav to India.

The External Affairs Ministry also said that New Delhi was not aware where Kulbhushan Jadhav was held and the condition he was in due to Islamabad’s refusal to provide consular access to him.

“We have no information and the Pakistan government has also not shared with us his location and how and where he is held and what his condition is,” spokesman Gopal Baglay told the media.

He reiterated that there was no credibility to Jad-

hav’s secret military trial and described as “baseless” the charges of espionage and waging war against Islamabad levelled against him.

He said India was engaged in efforts to bring back Jadhav but added that he would not like to speculate on the steps being taken, including who all New Delhi may talk to.

The spokesman said he had no information about the alleged abduction of a retired Pakistani military officer in Nepal.

MUMBAI, APR 13 (PTI): A special court on Thursday issued non-bailable arrest warrant against controversial preacher Zakir Naik in connection with a money laundering case.

The Enforcement Directorate sought the NBW against Naik, saying that the preacher has not joined the investigation so far.

The central probe agency, which moved the court earlier this week, had said that although Naik was served summons repeatedly, he had failed to appear before it. The ED registered a criminal case against Naik and others last December after taking cognisance of an NIA complaint under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The ED is looking into the charges of alleged illegal funds laundered by the accused in the case and the subsequent proceeds of crime thus generated.

Naik, 51, who is said to be staying in Saudi Arabia to evade arrest after some perpetrators of the Dhaka terror strike last year claimed they were inspired by him, has been booked along with unnamed Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) officials under section 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and doing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony) of the IPC, besides various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Defiant Karnan ‘summons’ CJI, six SC judges Ko l kata , A p r 1 3 (IANS): In a renewed confrontation with the Supreme Court, Calcutta High Court judge Justice C.S. Karnan on Thursday passed a “judicial order” against seven Supreme Court judges, including Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, for “violating” the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and directed them to “appear” before him on April 28. It is not clear if the “order” has any legal validity since the apex court had taken away administrative and judicial powers from Karnan. The seven judges had issued a suo motu contempt order against Karnan in February after he had in January named 20 ‘corrupt judges’, seeking probe against them.

A differently-abled person participates in a signature campaign against the death sentence to former Indian Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav by Pakistani military court, in Nagpur.

Commanders at Rawalpindi decided that “no compromise will be made on the death sentence”, the InterServices Public Relations (ISPR) said. Army chief General Qamar Bajwa, who was briefed about the progress on Jadhav’s case, presided over the meeting, the ISPR said. A Pakistani military court on April 10 awarded the capital punishment to Jadhav, who Islamabad says was an Indian intelligence agent and was caught in Balochistan in March last year.

Jadhav was charged with espionage and waging war against Pakistan.

India has said Jadhav, whose family lives in Mumbai, was abducted from Iran where he was engaged in business and warned that if he was hanged, it would amount to premeditated murder.

Gen Bajwa also lauded the efforts of intelligence agencies and other law enforcers towards the successful execution of counterterrorism operations across Pakistan, the ISPR said.

Pakistan has maintained that alleged Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav was caught red-handed and claimed this was a clear evidence of Indian involvement in sabotage activities in the country.

Bengaluru, Apr 13 (PTI): Infosys, India’s second-biggest software exporter, Thursday announced plans to return Rs 13,000 crore from its cash pile to shareholders after it reported an almost flat net profit in the March quarter and sales outlook that fell short of estimates.

Yielding to pressure from a group of founders and former executives, the company announced a share buyback programme and a pledge to raise dividends.

It also appointed Ravi Venkatesan, an independent director, co-Chairman in a bid to address the founders’ corporate governance concerns.

It will begin to pay 70 percent of annual free cash flow as dividend compared to a previous policy of sharing up to half its post-tax profit.

B’desh HC stays arson cases against Zia DHAKA, APR 13 (PTI): Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia today heaved a sigh of relief as the High Court stayed the trial against her in four separate vandalism and arson cases.

The order came after the court heard the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson’s petition challenging the trial court’s cognisance of the charge sheet by police.

Justice Miftah Uddin Choudhury and Justice ANM Bashir Ullah passed the order after hearing four separate petitions by 71year-old Khaleda seeking to stay the proceedings.

The court also issued four separate rulings asking the government to explain why the proceedings should not be scrapped, a local media report said.

After the BNP was prevented from holding a rally on January 5, 2015 to protest the anniversary of the 10th Bangladesh parliamentary elections, Khaleda had called a nationwide blockade.

In the course of the blockade that lasted 90 days, vehicles and buildings were fire-bombed, leading to almost 150 deaths, bdnews24.com reported.

S T R A S B O U R G (FRANCE), APR 13 (AFP): The European Court of Human Rights ruled today there were “serious failings” in Russia’s handling of the Beslan school siege by Chechen rebels in 2004 in which over 330 people were killed, many of them children.

The court said although Russian authorities had information that an attack was being planned on a school in North Ossetia, they failed to do enough to disrupt the plot and had not sufficiently protected the hostages.

Russia reacted furiously to the judgement, saying it was “absolutely unacceptable”.

The school was stormed

on September 1, 2004 by militants demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops from the war-torn republic of Chechnya.

The attackers herded 1,100 people including 800 children into a gymnasium and rigged the building with explosives.

After three days of fruitless negotiations, explosions in the school prompted Russian security forces to storm the gymnasium.

A total of 184 children were among the 334 dead as the siege came to a bloody end. Russian authorities argue they took the best course of action faced with armed extremists, but many of the survivors and their relatives believe the security services

U.S. drops ‘mother of all bombs’ in Afghanistan NEW YORK, APR 13 (AGENCIES): The US military has dropped the biggest non-nuclear bomb in its arsenal on an Islamic State group tunnel complex in Afghanistan, the Pentagon says.

The GBU-43 Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb (MOAB), known as “the mother of all bombs”, was first tested in 2003, but had not been used before in combat.

The Pentagon confirmed the weapon was dropped from a US aircraft in Nangarhar province.

It follows last week’s death of a US special forces soldier in Afghanistan.

The 21,600lb ( 9 , 8 0 0 k g ) b o m b wa s dropped in Achin district on Thursday evening local time, the Pentagon said.

Gen John Nicholson, commander of US forces in Afghanistan, said the jihadist group’s “losses have mounted, they are using IEDs, bunkers and tunnels to thicken their defence.

DAMASCUS, APR 13 (AFP): Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad said a suspected chemical weapons attack was a “fabrication” to justify a US strike on his forces.

The embattled leader, whose country has been ravaged by six years of war, said his firepower had not been affected by the attack ordered by US President Donald Trump, but acknowledged further strikes were possible.

Assad insisted his forces had turned over all their chemical weapons stocks years ago and would never use the banned arms.

The exclusive interview with AFP in Damascus yesterday was his first since a suspected chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of civilians in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun.

“Definitely, 100 per cent for us, it’s fabrication,” he said of the incident.

“Our impression is that the West, mainly the United States, is hand-in-glove with the terrorists. They fabricated the whole story in order to have a pretext for the attack,” added Assad, who has been in power for 17 years.

At least 87 people, including 31 children, were killed in the alleged attack, according to the Britainbased Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor.

Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services conducted an awareness camp on Fertility Management in Bovine under NPBB 2016-17 on 27th March at Niuland and on 10th April 2017 at Chief Veterinary office Conference Hall Dimapur where progressive livestock farmers attended the training.

The key note address was delivered by Dr. Temsu Ozukum, CVO Dimapur while Dr. Asenuo Linyu, Dy. CVO Dimapur spoke on the topic "Fertility Management in Bovine".

The farmers were distributed vitamins, min mixture and dewormer.

The Angami Gazetted Officers Krotho (AGOK) congratulates Mr. Atu Zumvu, SDPO Kohima for being conferred the prestigious Shaurya Chakra by the President of India.

The Krotho congratulates Atu Zumvu, NPS, who is currently serving as the SDPO Kohima for receiving the coveted gallantry award Shaurya Chakra from the First Citizen of the country, the President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee on 6th April, 2017 in New Delhi.

The AGOK lauds him for being an Officer who has been responsive towards the call of duties in good and bad times, thereby earning the reputation as a ‘performer’ or ‘deliverer’ wherever he is posted. WI Taylor comes out of retirement St. John’s, Apr 13 (Agencies): West Indies fast bowler Jerome Taylor on Wednesday announced he was coming out of retirement, just nine months after he called time on his 46-Test career. Taylor, 32, said he was available for all three formats of the game, which will be a boost for the flagging Caribbean team who face Pakistan in a threeTest series from April 21.

NEW DELHI, Apr 13 (PTI): Omitted from the Target Olympic Podium S c h e m e, I n d i a ’s l o n e double Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar on Thursday gracefully accepted it, saying there was no point taking funds from the government when he is out of action.

Besides Sushil, London Games bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt has also been excluded from the list, and the famous Phogat sisters Geeta and Babita - faced the axe too.

“I think it is a right decision. My name should have been removed from the list since I am not in action.

If I am not contributing on the mat, why should I be a part of any funding,” Sushil told PTI. “I don’t want to take anything from anyone when I am not playing. I

New Delhi, Apr 13 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : I n d i a n trailblazing gymnast Dipa Karmakar and wrestler Sakshi Malik on Thursday received the coveted Padma Shri Award from President Pranab Mukherjee in the national capital. Karmakar, hailing from Agar tala, missed the bronze medal by 0.150 points as American gymnast Simone Biles won her third gold medal at the Rio Olympics last year.

The 23-year-old had created history when she became the first Indian gymnast to enter the final on her debut at the quadrennial multi-discipline games after finishing eighth in the qualifying round.

She had initially come to spotlight after winning a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, thus becoming the first Indian female gymnast to achieve the feat. Sakshi, on the other hand, won the bronze medal in the 58 kg category at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

With the win, Malik became the first woman wrestler in India to win an Olympic medal and fourth Indian woman athlete to clinch the coveted medal after Karnam Malleshwari, Mar y Kom and Saina Nehwal. Meanwhile, discus thrower Vikas Gowda and Paralympian Mariyappan Thangavelu were other notable winners of the prestigious award.
