Staff Reporters DIMAPUR, APR 14 (NPN): Traffic congestion has become a big problem in Dimapur and could continue for perhaps another year as the ongoing construction of the four-lane along NH 29 has not been as fast-paced as one would expect while time taken for construction of the new bridges across Dhansiri river between Purana Bazaar and Walford Colony and at Full Nagarjan near Electrical Colony, will continue to restrict movement of vehicular traffic across the only bridge at present near Burma Camp. Union Minister offers to quit Cabinet, RS
Ch Birender Singh (File)
New Delhi, Apr 14 (IANS): Union Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh on Sunday offered to resign from the Cabinet and also as a Rajya Member after the BJP fielded his son Brijendra Singh from the Hisar Lok Sabha constituency in Haryana. “I thought it proper that if my son gets nomination, I should resign from the Rajya Sabha and also from the Ministry. So I have written to (BJP President) Amit Shahji. I leave it to the party... I am ready to resign,” he told reporters. Birender Singh’s decision to quit is being seen as an effort to send across a message of anti-dynastic politics as his son has been given a Lok Sabha ticket. Brijendra Singh, an IAS officer, will start his political journey from the same Hisar seat, which his father had won in 1984 by defeating former chief minister Om Prakash Chautala.

to Kohima, has been consistent but somewhat slow. According to some officials who were contacted, at the present pace, it could take another year to complete the works. The construction work for the four-lane highway along Purana Bazaar-Chumoukedima, stretches a total length of around 12.9 kilometers. Work had already begun and some marked improvement can be seen in the Purana Bazaar area stretch where nearly 200 meters of half of the four-lane is being paved with concrete. As per the norms, the four-lane express highway is to be paved with concrete mixture and not asphalt as in the earlier days. It was

disclosed that the entire stretch from Purana Bazaar to Chumoukedima will be completed by December 2019. The Purana Bazaar stretch is being laid with Dry Lean Concrete (DLC) composed of stone chips, cement and coarse sand. DLC has a large ratio of aggregate to cement compared to normal concrete. The thickness of DLC is 150 mm or 5.9 inch which is normally used as a base or sub-base of a rigid pavement. Another layer called Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) has to be laid as the final layer before it is ready for use. An executive from TK Consortium Pvt Ltd, in-
of rainwater from the drains alongside the road, will be culverts constructed beneath the road. The water will flow to the culvert to the nearest drainage system constructed in villages and colonies. Bridges: Presently construction of two new bridges –one between Purana Bazaar and Walford Colony (which used to be connected by the dismantled old bridge constructed during World War-II) and one at Full Nagarjan near Electrical Colony (where another war time era concrete bridge is still being used for light vehicles after cracks appeared on decks)- are yet to be completed. Works on the new bridge between Walford-
volved with the construction work, told this Reporter that the thickness of PQC on the stretch from Purana Bazaar to Chumoukedima will be 280 mm or 11.02 inches. Also, keeping in view the impending monsoon and damage caused to roads due to accumulation of water on the surface, drains have been dug out alongside both sides of the road with slabs to act as pavements. It was also observed that in the drainage construction, there are large holes on the side of drain for seepage of rainwater into the drains from the road. On diversion of rainwater from the drainage, the official explained that the main point for diversion
Purana Bazaar is going on in full swing, even as there has been inordinate delays due to various reasons. Among them was the allegation of harassments faced by labourers at the hands of miscreants. The length of the new bridge over which construction has been going on is around 96 metres. At the construction site, this Reporter was told that it would take another two years to complete the bridge. Due to constant harassment and at times assaults by miscreants, the labourers had to be shifted to Urbaan Hat ground, after which such incidents have ceased since the past three months. EVMs malfunctioning row: Opposition to approach SC NEW DELHI, APR 14 (AGENCIES): Raising doubts over the credibility of EVMs, a number of opposition parties Sunday said they will move the Supreme Court again to demand verification of at least 50 per cent of votes by paper trail. Opposition parties, including the Congress, Telugu Desam Party, Samajwadi Party, CPI and CPI(M), jointly addressed a press conference to highlight the issue of transparency in the election process and protection of voter rights with a call to “save democracy”. Delhi chief minister and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal accused BJP of “programming” electronic voting machines to win the Lok Sabha elections. “People don’t believe in EVMs anymore. All of us (opposition parties) want at least 50 per cent VVPAT counting except one party, BJP, which is benefitting out of this manipulation of machines,” he said. “We are raising doubts about the EVMs. The confidence of the voter can
only be restored through paper trail machines…,” Andhra Pradesh chief minister counterpart Chandrababu Naidu said. The Supreme Court had directed Election Commission to increase random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs to five polling booths per assembly segment, from one at present, in the Lok Sabha polls, saying it will provide greater satisfaction not just to political parties but the entire electorate. Congress leader and senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi said, “If the EC will ignore this issue then we will take other measures. We will not sit quietly.” Singhvi said the opposition parties will carry out a nationwide campaign on the issue of discrepancies in EVMs and alleged that the EC was not doing enough to address the issue. “Questions were raised after the first phase of elections. If you press the button before X party, vote goes to Y party. VVPAT displays only for 3 seconds, instead of 7 seconds,” Singhvi said.
BJP alleges rigging by NPF in Manipur Mystery box carried out of PM’s chopper, Cong files complaint GUWAHATI, APR 14 (AGENCIES): BJP in a complaint with the Manipur Chief Election Officer alleged that armed NSCN cadres had forced people to cast their vote in favour of NPF candidate Lorho Mao from Outer Manipur constituency, which went to polls on April 11, and has also sought the disqualification of Mao’s candidature. According to News18 report, Manipur BJP president K Babhanand in his complaint alleged that the armed cadres had intimidated voters to vote for Mao and were misusing the cease-fire agreement with the Government of India by carrying out widespread rigging. He also alleged that they captured 196 polling stations in Chandel, Tamenglong, Senapati and Ukhrul districts. In a complaint letter, BJP alleged that many voters from Mao, Karong, Tadubi, Kamjong, Tamengiong, Nungba and Tamei had tried to file complaints against the threats, but no security forces paid heed to their plea. Moreover, BJP alleged that several polling stations recorded a voting percentage of 80 per cent by
noon on April 11 and said, “Compared to the past voting results it seemed highly unnatural. We request the commission to look into the CCTV footage of the polling booths.” The complaint letter was signed by BJP Manipur Pradesh president K Bhabananda, vice president M Ashni Kumar and State general secretary T Satyabrata was submitted to CEO office on Wednesday. Earlier, NPP also accused BJP of mass electoral malpractices during the April 11 polls. Addressing media persons at NPP state unit office in Imphal, party leader Kim Gangte accused BJP of using Kuki militant groups under suspension of operation (SoO) to garner votes for the Outer Manipur BJP candidate. Kim claimed that some Kuki civil society organizations and village chiefs were threatened by the militant group. She went on to allege that chief minister N Biren had also warned the Kuki militant groups under SoO pact that the government would withdraw from the truce if they do not cooperate with BJP in the election.
B E N G A LU RU, A P R 1 4 (AGENCIES): A mysterious black box that was allegedly carried out of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s helicopter, after he landed in north Karnataka’s Chitradurga on April 12, has snowballed into a controversy following a Congress complaint. In a video released by the Congress, two men can be seen carrying the box out of the chopper. Congress leaders, including KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao, tweeted a video showing the black box being carried away by a few unidentified people. On Sunday, Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma asked the Prime Minister to come clean on the issue and said the EC should inquire into the contents of the trunk. Sharma said the Congress’ Karnataka unit has already filed a complaint with the EC in this regard. “We saw there were three more choppers escorting the Prime Minister’s helicopter. After landing, a black trunk was

taken out and whisked away in a private car which was not part of the SPG cascade.” Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma, as quoted by PTI Sharma suggested there was cash stashed in the trunk. “What was there in the trunk. If there was no cash in it, let an inquiry be held.” The party also played a video clip claiming that the purported trunk, after being unloaded from the PM’s helicopter, was shipped to a private Innova car, that Sharma alleged was not a part of the SPG carcade, and taken away. Sharma also asked Modi
to give an account of his fiveyear rule to the people of the country as a tribute to Dr B R Ambedkar on his birth anniversary. “The Prime Minister is trying to control and change the narrative because he has no courage the face real issues,” he alleged. Raising the issue of Rafale, Sharma asked Modi to make public the minutes of a meeting held last year between him and former French president Francois Hollande on the fighter jet deal. “Why is he (PM) silent on his role in Rafale scam? Make the minutes of the meeting between Prime
Minister and former French president Francois Hollande on the Rafale deal public by tomorrow. As there has been a controversy, it would help settle it once for all,” he said. The Prime Minister in his “desperation to win has done enormous disservice to the nation by dragging in the Armed Forces for Partisan political propaganda”, Sharma further alleged. “Seeking votes for the courageous action and sacrifices of our soldiers is an unpardonable transgression and also an insult to the Armed forces who defend the motherland under the tricolour and not under one person or party. The Indian Army belongs to the Republic of India,” he said. The JD(S)’s official twitter handle also alleged double standards, claiming that while Election Commission officials checked CM Kumaraswamy’s car multiple times in a day, they aren’t concerned about the mysterious box that was shipped from PM’s helicopter to a private car.
In case of hung Parl, regional parties can be kingmakers KLH condemns assault on NEW DELHI, APR 14 (IANS): With some poll surveys predicting that BJPled NDA may fall short of numbers in the Lok Sabha elections, the role of regional political parties can become crucial in deciding who forms the government at the Centre, if the predictions prove correct. Particular focus will be on parties such as YSR Congress led by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, TRS led by K Chandrasekhar Rao, BJD of Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik and the BSP-SP combine, which have displayed equidistance with both the BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led UPA. Trinamool Congress led by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and TDP headed by Chandrababu Naidu could also find a role in the gov-
ernment-formation at the Centre. Banerjee and Naidu have been making efforts to cobble up an anti-BJP coalition and had even hobnobbed with the Congress in this regard. However, Banerjee, while strongly attacking the BJP, has also been targeting the Congress, which has reciprocated in equal manner. The BSP and SP, while being highly critical of the BJP, also snubbed the Congress by keeping it out of their pre-poll coalition. These regional parties are players at around 180 out of the total 543 Lok
Sabha seats and the criticality of their role will be determined by the numbers they get in the elections. A hung parliament would throw up several possibilities and the leaders of the non-Congress and nonBJP block appear to favour such a situation. Jagan Mohan Reddy had said earlier this month that he is hoping for a hung Parliament so that he gets a better deal for the state. Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) leader Kamal Haasan had also said that the Lok Sabha election will result in a hung Parliament and there is a possibility of the ‘Third Front’ forming
the government. A pre-poll survey conducted by Lokniti of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies had said that despite an increase in vote share, the BJP is likely to lose seats due to a “more united Opposition” in key states. The survey pegged BJP’s seat estimate between 222 and 232, far less than 283 seats that it won in 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The pre-poll survey showed that Congress party could win 74-84. The party had won just 44 seats in 2014. The survey showed that National Democratic Alliance may or may not
cross the majority mark, wining between 263 and 283 seats. The United Progressive Alliance is estimated to have between 115 and 135 seats. A CVoter-IANS opinion poll released in midMarch had said that NDA is predicted to get 264 seats, falling eight short of the half-way mark of 272 to form the government. It said that UPA - led by the Congress - can get around 141 seats. There had also been a talk of a federal front before the elections and Rao had held meetings before the elections to bring together non-BJP, non-NDA parties. Such efforts may gain momentum after the elections. If there is a possibility of formation of a third front government, some present allies of BJP and Congress may also join it.

They said Rulanthung, who is a member of KLH, brought defamation to the unit. Stating that they had
no words to express their shame except to appeal, in all earnestness, Tungoe and Ovung appealed to the Konyak community, especially Konyak Students’ Union, Kohima for forgiveness and help resolve the issue on humanitarian gesture. “We have the confidence in the wisdom of Konyak Students’ Union that the best will emerge out of this unfortunate incidence,” they added. The Holy procession began from PHQ junction and ended at Cathedral Church. CBCK: Chakhesang Baptist Church Kohima (CBCK) observed ‘Palm Sunday’ at its Church premises. According to a press release issued by CBCK, Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) general secretary, Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho spoke on the topic “The Coming King.” As we celebrate the last journey of Jesus to Jerusalem which the gospel writers call it the “Triumphal entry” on a donkey, there is the danger of making the journey impersonal, said Rev. Dr. Keyho. There is the danger of becoming too fanciful in our celebration of events and forgetting the real meaning of the celebration, he said. “Today, palm branches have become the focus and we forget the branches cut from the trees and from the field. The focus is not on what they use but what they did to welcome Jesus” he said. He added that Jesus must become personal in the lives of believers and He must live in them not only in their belief system but also in their actions. The service was led by Rev. Dr. Vetso Koza.

The AH&VS team with villagers at the suspected Haemorrhagic septicaemia outbreak area on April 12.
DIMAPUR: Following reports of a good number of buffaloes dying in a recent outbreak of suspected Haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS), a team from Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) department visited the affected areas under Medziphema on April 12. (Haemorrhagic septicaemia is a contagious bacterial disease that affects cattle and water buffaloes with a high mortality rate in infected animals.) AH&VS, deputy director & principal investiga-
tor, AICRP-ADMAS, Dr S. Amenla Walling, in a press release reported that the team consisted of the department’s director, Dr Temsumeren, along with additional director, Dr. Budhi Lama, and other officials from the department. The press release added that the area is prone to such kind of disease outbreaks and the department officials reminded villagers to cooperate with the department and vaccinate their animals against such outbreaks. The team told the vil-
lagers that even an outbreak can be contained more effectively if villagers report the matter on time to the nearest Veterinary Health Centre. The villagers admitted in the meeting that they had not reported the recent outbreak to the department initially. The director appreciated the CVO Dimapur and his Rapid Response Team for their quick action after receiving information and for remaining stationed in the outbreak area to date. Free medicine was
also distributed among the villagers. The department, through the press release also appealed to everyone to report such matters to the nearest Veterinary Health Centre (so that qualified staff may intervene quickly), instead of publicizing it in other ways. It stated that the department is prepared to extend services to any outbreak of diseases in animals to control such things. The press release also pointed out that to control the recent outbreak, the department had to direct its officials to make their own transport arrangements to go to the affected areas because the State Election department did not consider an appeal to exempt the department’s emergency duty vehicle from election duty. Meanwhile, when contacted, Dr S. Amenla Walling told Nagaland Post that it is difficult to say if the disease has been fully contained since its free grazing season for the animals, but the department is doing its best under the circumstances.

Priyanka Gandhi campaigns for Silchar Congress candidate Sushmita Dev.
Silchar (Assam), Apr 14 (PTI): Coming down heavily on the BJP, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday said the Constitution is not respected and an attempt is being made to destroy it. Holding a roadshow in Silchar in support of Congress candidate and sitting MP Sushmita Dev, she also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has toured the world over, but hardly spent time in his own constituency in Varanasi. “It is ‘Mahapurush’ (B R) Ambedkar ji’s birth anniversary. He laid the foundation of this country through the Constitution. It is the duty of every leader to respect that Constitu-
tion. “Today, you are seeing that the Constitution is not respected and an attempt is being made to destroy it,” said Gandhi, who is Congress’s general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh East. Slamming the the BJP’s manifesto, she said there is no space for different cultures and religions in it, as well as any respect for the Constitution. Gandhi said she was told by people in Varanasi that Modi did not spend even five minutes with anyone there in the last five years. “He went to America and hugged there, went to China and hugged there, too. As per weathermen, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are like over the most parts of the region. However, heavy rains are ruled out but one or two intense showers cannot be denied. This rainy spell would be on account of a cyclonic

These on and off rains of varying intensity are likely to continue over Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, and Manipur till April 18. Speaking highly of Sushmita Dev, Gandhi likened the Congress lawmaker with her grandmother and former prime minister Indira Gandhi. “If you remember Indira Gandhi even today, it is because she worked for you. I have come here for Sushmita. She has that courage which Indira ji had. Sushmita has that honest and good intention, and wants to work for you from the heart,” she added.

cut down on votes of the Congress and help the BJP,” Deb Burman claimed. The IPFT-BJP alliance formed the government in Tripura in 2018, ending the 25-year rule of the Left Front. Earlier this month, IPFT vice-president Ananta Debbarma and its Youth wing general secretary Shuklacharan Noatia joined the Congress, blaming IPFT leaders for high-handedness and an absence of internal democracy in the party. Meanwhile, a delegation of Congress leaders from Tripura reached New Delhi on Saturday to meet officials of the Election Commission for re-polling in booths, which the party alleges to have been rigged on April 11. Congress has alleged that 151 out of the 1,679 polling booths in the West Tripura Lok Sabha constituency were rigged.

of the elections on April 11. Confident that the Congress will win all the five seats, he said, “According to ground reports the people in Assam voted against the BJP as they want to punish the party for bringing the anti-constitutional bill.” Addressing a press conference here, Rawat asserted that this trend will also follow in the second and third phase of elections to be held on April 18 and 23. “Our president Rahul Gandhi has been voicing the agenda of our party that if voted to power, we will throw the bill into the dustbin. We have clearly stated this in our manifesto, too. “As the people are protesting against the bill, I dont see the BJP winning this time,” Rawat claimed.
First, she brought Rahul Gandhi, then Pakistan PM Imran Khan’s friend Navjot Singh Sidhu. Tomorrow (Sunday) again, she is bringing Priyanka Gandhi. She knows that she did nothing in the last five years and is sure to lose,” Sarma claimed. He alleged that the Congress does not have any ideology and keeps changing its version on the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, while the BJP is firm on its commitment that all the refugees will stay in India. Sarma also asserted that the BJP will win all the five seats that went to polls in the first phase, “with a margin of two lakh votes each”. Voting for the Silchar Lok Sabha constituency will take place in the second phase of general elections on April 18.

Ahead of the festival, the State has witnessed several spells of showers, making the weather pleasant and providing the much-needed respite from the engulfing dust. Now the people are eager to welcome the Assamese New Year ushered in by the Rongali Bihu.
Even the spiralling rise in the prices of essential commodities, particularly foodstuffs, has failed to dampen the festive spirit as people have started thronging the markets in hordes to buy Bihu delicacies, gifts

searchers at CDDEP in the US conducted stakeholder interviews in Uganda, India, and Germany, and literature reviews to identify key access barriers to antibiotics in low-, middle- and highincome countries. Health facilities in many low- and middle-income countries are substandard and lack staff who are properly trained in administering antibiotics. In India, there is one government doctor for every 10,189 people (the World Health Organization recommends a ratio of 1:1,000), or a deficit of 600,000 doctors, and the nurse: patient ratio is 1:483, implying a shortage of two million (20 lakh) nurses. “Lack of access to antibiotics kills more people currently than does antibiotic resistance, but we have not had a good handle on why these barriers are created,” said Ramanan Laxminarayan, director at CDDEP. The findings of the report show that even after the discovery of a new antibiotic, regulatory hurdles and substandard health facilities delay or altogether
prevent widespread market entry and drug availability,” Laxminarayan said in a statement. “Our research shows that of 21 new antibiotics entering markets between 1999 and 2014, less than five were registered in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Just the mere existence of an effective antibiotic does not mean that they are available in countries where they are most needed,” said Laxminarayan. Worldwide, the irrational use of antibiotics and poor antimicrobial stewardship lead to treatment failure and propagate the spread of drug resistance which, in turn, further narrows the available array of effective antibiotics. Research and development for new antimicrobials, vaccines, and diagnostic tests has slowed since the 1960s as profitable investment in this area is limited by low sales volumes, short duration of treatment, competition with established products and less expensive generics, and the possibility that resistance will rapidly emerge.
Questioning the veil of secrecy on Rafale, Sharma said a joint statement between two countries is usually negotiated and prepared in advance. “... and if purchase of Rafale fighter jets in fly-away condition was discussed, why was it not included in the joint statement. The Prime Minister should not remain silent on the deal,” he said. He also shared details of the meeting between top officials of the Indian Air Force, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and the Rafale manufacturers Dassault. “The contract was s n a t c h e d aw a y f r o m HAL, wherein Dassault had agreed on transfer-oftechnology. Instead, a deal was made for 36 jets and HAL was not involved at all,” Sharma said.
New Delhi, Apr 14 (IANS): Amid the heated Lok Sabha poll campaigns making the rounds on social media, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) President and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav shared an old dubsmash video of himself mouthing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s words promising “achche din” back in 2014. Mocking the Prime Minister, Yadav shared the 17-second video on Twitter on Saturday, captioning it “Muft mei le lo 15 lakh, achche din aur jumla” which roughly translates to “Take for free Rs 15 lakh, good days and campaign rhetoric”. Modi’s voice saying “Every Indian will get Rs 1520 lakh” is vividly audible in the video in which Lalu Prasad is seen lip-syncing clad in a grey t-shirt. The video, that has already gathered 1,600 comments, 2,500 re-tweets and 12,000 likes on Twitter, is aimed at reminding the people about Modi’s 2014 promises of ushering better days and providing financial benefits to the people if his party was voted to power. Since then, the opposition has not missed any opportunity to taunt Modi, accusing him of failing to keep his words inspite of being elected as the Prime Minister of the nation.
Piyush Goyal (File) New Delhi, Apr 14 (IANS): Union Minister and senior BJP leader Piyush Goyal on Sunday said the Congress party’s promise of a minimum income scheme for poor is a “disaster” in its design itself and could lead to another “scam” as selection of beneficiaries would be full of corruption. Goyal said he feels it will not be possible to implement this scheme as there is no data for income and salary levels and the Congress promise will “burst like a balloon”. The Congress has promised to deposit Rs 72,000 annually into the bank accounts of 20% of the poorest people across the country if it comes to power.
While the Congress leaders and its president Rahul Gandhi have been s ay i n g t h e p r o p o s e d scheme, which the party has named ‘NYAY’, has got a huge traction among the voters, the BJP has termed it totally impractical and against economic prudence. In an interview to PTI, Goyal said, “From the perspective of economic and financial prudence, obviously it is a disaster. I believe that it is near impossible because there is no data of salary and income levels of people.” “And, selection of people [beneficiaries] will be full of corruption and it could become a scam by itself, adding to the several scams that the Congress is famous for,” Goyal said. Attacking the Opposition party, the Minister of Railways and Coal said the Congress still seems to be in its old mindset where they believed mere slogans can help them “fool the people”, but they should know that people now cannot be fooled by fancy slogans.

New Delhi, Apr 14 (PTI): India has shortage of an estimated 600,000 doctors and 2 million nurses, say scientists who found that lack of staff who are properly trained in administering antibiotics is preventing patients from accessing livesaving drugs. Even when antibiotics are available, patients are often unable to afford them. High out-of-pocket medical costs to the patient are compounded by limited government spending for health services, according to the report by the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP) in the US. In India, 65 per cent of health expenditure is out-of-pocket, and such expenditures push some 57 million people into poverty each year. The majority of the world’s annual 5.7 million antibiotic-treatable deaths occur in low- and middleincome countries where the mortality burden from treatable bacterial infections far exceeds the estimated annual 700,000 deaths from antibiotic-resistant infections. New Delhi, Apr14 (IANS): The Congress on Sunday demanded that the Centre make public the minutes of the meeting (MoM) between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former French President Francois Hollande, which culminated in the Rafale fighter aircraft deal. “The draft of the joint statement of the Indian Prime Minister and the French President did not have any mention on Rafale deal. We want the government to publicly place the minutes of meeting held between the two leaders,” senior Congress leader Anand Sharma told reporters. “What is there to hide?”, he asked. The former Union Minister also invited the Prime Minister for an open debate on the Rafale deal. “If there is no corruption involved, then the government should release the MoM. By not doing so, it is clearly evident that the Prime Minister is hiding something and he is involved in corruption. The former French President had already said that the Indian government recommended a partner,” he said.

A divided house
fter the first phase of polling for the Lok Sabha on April 11 and subsequent phases which will continue till May 19, 2019 there are considerable speculations on what will be the post poll scenario or when counting takes place on May 23. The first is whether the Modi government will be able to retain power either on the strength of the NDA or with support of other regional political parties, if it runs short of the required number of 272 seats. The other speculation is whether the disparate and disunited opposition will ever be able to come together to forge a post-poll alliance? One of the problem of a likely scenario where a combination of non-NDA parties including Congress and the will succeed in forging an alliance? The non-NDA parties have failed to forge the mahagathbandan mainly since the national glue, the Congress, has not exactly been warm to the idea of playing a mute partner. Congress leaders still believe their party has a pan-India presence and therefore, it would be unbefitting if it agreed to play a distant second fiddle. However this stand of the Congress is not borne on the ground. For instance, in UP the Congress in 2009 won 21 seats but in 2014 it was reduced to a single digit of two seats only. The Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party have forged an alliance minus Congress for whom it was kind enough to leave two seats. Even in Andhra Pradesh, the Telugu Desam Party(TDP) which had announced an alliance with the Congress developed a change of heart and decided to go it alone and leaving the Congress in the lurch. In West Bengal, the Congress ensured it failed to forge an alliance with the TMC because the party was divided between the centre and state organisations. The AICC was willing to bargain for seats but the state unit refused on the ground that the party could fight it alone without begging for seats. Thus, the Congress will be fighting a lone battle versus NDA versus regional alliances. With a party organisation almost non existent in West Bengal and UP and other state units needing revamp, the Congress appears to be living in a fantasy land. After being rebuffed by the SP-BSP alliance in UP, the coming together with like-minded parties in other states too have stalled. The Congress has been left out by the Samajwadi Party(SP)-Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) alliance and it has failed to forge an alliance with the Left and TMC in West Bengal and with the ruling AAP in Delhi. Even the Left in Kerala is seeing red over the strange decision of Rahul Gandhi to contest from Wayanad in Kerala. This has hurt the CPI(M), which is peeved at the action and has vowed that it will use all its force to defeat Gandhi. Even in West Bengal, Rahul opened a ‘third front’ when he launched outbursts against West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. Initially, Mamata did not respond but was later compelled not to allow Rahul’s outburst against her to go unchallenged. This does not bode well for the Opposition unity as it evoked an angry reaction from the TMC chief. There is a dichotomy among the opposition parties who are divided in their approach but united in their goal to defeat Modi.
DailyDevotion Inner Invincibility Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me… —Matthew 11:29 “Whom the Lord loves He chastens…” (Hebrews 12:6). How petty our complaining is! Our Lord begins to bring us to the point where we can have fellowship with Him, only to hear us moan and groan, saying, “Oh Lord, just let me be like other people!” Jesus is asking us to get beside Him and take one end of the yoke, so that we can pull together. That’s why Jesus says to us, “My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:30). Are you closely identified with the Lord Jesus like that? If so, you will thank God when you feel the pressure of His hand upon you. “…to those who have no might He increases strength” (Isaiah 40:29). God comes and takes us out of our emotionalism, and then our complaining turns into a hymn of praise. The only way to know the strength of God is to take the yoke of Jesus upon us and to learn from Him. “…the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). Where do the saints get their joy? If we did not know some Christians well, we might think from just observing them that they have no burdens at all to bear. But we must lift the veil from our eyes. The fact that the peace, light, and joy of God is in them is proof that a burden is there as well. The burden that God places on us squeezes the grapes in our lives and produces the wine, but most of us see only the wine and not the burden. No power on earth or in hell can conquer the Spirit of God living within the human spirit; it creates an inner invincibility. If your life is producing only a whine, instead of the wine, then ruthlessly kick it out. It is definitely a crime for a Christian to be weak in God’s strength.

Policy paralysis mark poll campaign
he election time is show time. The misses are swept under the carpet. Rhetoric rules the roost. Manifestos are not necessary about substance or firm promises. These may be real in some cases and away from the reality in most cases. In the din, the US withdrawal of zero-duty entry for Indian exports under Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) went unnoticed. The opposition, in disarray, has not been able to rake up pressing issues. For any ruling party, it is a matter of relief. Surprising is the silence of the business chambers. The US decision would have direct impact on Indian exports and balance of payment. It required an intense diplomacy and the government had been rigid despite US warnings since early 2018. The government could have accepted the US demand for allowing imports of US dairy products. It could have helped Indian businesses. The complexities of Brexit are also to impact Indian exports. That also is not discussed. It is in contrast to the foreign policy stress of 1971 manifesto of Indira Gandhi, when Indian Ocean littoral states took a significant space. And industrial production in February grows by
0.1 percent. Politically, economic diplomacy is not easy to explain to the electorate, who are suffering from job losses, inflation despite a low WPI, high bank charges, tolls and the threat of losing their tenyear old vehicles to quixotic NGT rules that allow pollution by factories but not small emissions from a car. All manifestos have ignored the pressing issues and are not even considering the ecological issues of building roads and airports indiscriminately. After several promises in the Congress manifesto, a similar expectation was there for the BJP manifesto. It, however, is not harping so much on development as it did in 2014. Many past promises of the BJP are incorporated by Congress and stress on delivery. In tune with the campaign, BJP has harped on issues that would boost up nationalistic approach. It harps on the Jan Sangh’s Article 35 A, 370, Kashmir and panders to religious sentiments, not through Lord Ram, but national register of citizens (NRC) – reviving the sentiments of the Partition. The BJP manifesto is light on legal reform whether in terms of legislation, policy proposals or judicial reform.

it should have stressed on its benefits. Somehow, Odisha’s KAALIA scheme has its echo. The BJP takes care of pension for 60 plus farmers, shopkeepers and already introduced in the budget pension for unorganized workers. The welfare schemes are good but its economic costs certainly are not estimated during poll time. The KAALIA looks good as is MNREGA. But both created a system of lazy people who because of these doles shun working. This has lead to influx of labourers from Jharkhand, West Bengal and neighbouring states to Odisha. In simple terms, it is a double whammy for state economy. It has more outgo and now the society is also paying as a large part of state GDP goes out due to import of labour and supporting a class of inactive people. The poll time is also the time to discuss critical issues. But election commission (EC) has sanitised the campaign to such an extent that parties are neither approaching voters neither they are discussing problems nor are they talking to voters. The process stymies democratic discussion. That is possibly the reason for low turn-out in the
first phase of polls. Voters apparently are feeling cut-off. The family-based, ideologybereft parties do not create confidence though that is the alternative. Politically, voters are confused. The refrain is that nobody is listening to them and nor anybody is talking to them. Door-to-door contacts are not there. It is an uncertain situation. There is fear and apprehension. Social media has not been able to replace personal contacts and the dialogue. Parties have to realise that 2019 may be the disaster for social media campaigning. One lesson that nobody is learning is the failure of Manmohanomics – that ensured pro-corporate profits and jobless growth. Today’s problem of the BJP emanates from it. The manifesto has not evolved a new policy. Even if BJP is able to form a government it exemplifies policy wilderness. Post election that would be the crucial task. Winning the battle is not enough. Welfare economics charms but is devoid of hard realities. Contesting a key election without national policies on jobs, farms, industrial production, low inflation and sound financial institutions may prove to be costly. Postpoll the path has to change.

Seven precious words of Jesus on the cross The untold fate of Home Guards
T
he season of Lent has come to a close; Holy Week has begun, and we are in the threshold of Easter. But before Easter, Good Friday comes, a day considered as ‘good’ although it was on this Friday that our Lord Jesus Christ suffered and was crucified on the Cross, because redemption was given to humankind on this day. I think it is very apt for all of us to recall during these days the Calvary scene, the most beautiful scene in the history of humankind where Jesus Christ, Our Lord and God, sacrificed his life for our salvation and the salvation of humankind. To really understand the joy of Easter we need to understand Jesus’ passion and death. We need to prepare ourselves if we want to have a genuine celebration of the feast of Easter. Reflecting on the Seven Words of Jesus on the Cross is a beautiful means to put oneself into the mood of Good Friday. Jesus, after the long painful journey to Mount Calvary and still suffering on the Cross, that infamous instrument of torture and death, regarded as the worst mean for punishment, uttered Seven Precious Words. The given lines are simple reflections on the words spoken by Jesus on the Cross. 1. Father Forgive Them for They Don’t Know What They Are Doing. (Luke 23:34) It is natural that when an innocent person is judged, he tries to prove his innocence or pleads for mercy. But it is strange to see Jesus on the Cross, neither proving his innocence nor asking for mercy. Why? It is because Jesus is God and human are never judges of God. The excruciating and agonizing pains did not made Jesus cry, instead from the depths of his loving heart, Jesus prayed, “Father forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing.”(Luke 23:34) These words of our Lord invite us to forgive our offenders. It is very difficult for us to forgive someone who hurts us, yet Jesus is showing us that we can really forgive. Let the prayer that we pray daily, “forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sins against us”, give us strength to forgive, for we will be forgiven if we forgive. Forgiveness will surely bring peace, healing and happiness in our lives. 2. I Promise You That Today You Will Be in Paradise with Me. (Luke 23:43) There was no such thing as the good thief in the beginning of the crucifixion. Hearing the prayer of Jesus, “Father forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing”, a change of heart came on to one of the thieves. He saw someone special in Jesus; began to accept his sins and begged Jesus for Salvation. Strange, a dying man asking a dying man for eternal life. It was his last prayer or might be the first; nevertheless his prayer was heard. Jesus assured him, “I promise you that today you will be in paradise with me.” (Luke 23:43) He seemed to be a professional thief; managed to steal heaven at the last hour.
In our lives too we have our own sins and shortcomings, but let us remember that our sins are nothing compared with the mercy of God. Our sins are but a drop in the mighty ocean of God’s mercy. God is every ready to forgive us no matter how sinful we are. What we need is true repentance and change of heart. God always longs for us return. Let us rise from or sins and run to his loving embrace. 3. Woman Behold Your Son, Son Behold Your Mother. (John 19:26&27) From the Cross Jesus said to his mother, “Woman behold your son,” and to John, “Son behold your mother.” (John 19:26&27) Jesus endowed to his beloved mother the title, Universal Motherhood. Jesus called her woman and not mother, because if mother she would have been just his mother and no one else. At Calvary John represented the newly established Church of Christ and Christ knew that the church was young and would need a loving mother to look after. Therefore, Jesus gave to the church his beloved mother, under whose maternal love the church will spread to all ends of the earth. John needed no mother and his mother too was also present at the Cross, but Jesus’ words had spiritual meaning. Mother Mary has an important role in the life of ever Christian, whether one accepts it or not. Some of us are misguided by the wrong understanding of the honor given to her in the Church. However, Mary continues to play a significant role in the Church and that seems to by becoming more and more important. We need to give her a place in our lives; we need her prayers and intercessions. Our Blessed Mother will never take us away from his Beloved Son Jesus; she will take us to Him. 4. My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me? (Matthew 27:46) Hanging on the Cross, suffering all that any human can suffer, Jesus cried aloud, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” This cry of Jesus was never a cry of despair. This is a verse from the Psalms, written 1000 years before Jesus’ birth. The Psalm begins with a cry of sorrow, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” but ends with shouts of praise and joy, “The Lord is king and he rules the nations… The Lord saved his people.” (Psalm 22) Through this words Jesus shared with our human sentiments and expressed human longing for God. St.Augustine said that our hearts are restless till it rests in the Lord. Yes, or hearts always expresses yearning for God, let us pay heed to these yearnings. Let us never silence our desires and longings for God. Let us trust in the Lord, He knows what is best for us. “Let us hold firmly to the faith we profess for our God is not one who cannot feel sympathy for our weaknesses.”(Hebrews 4:14&15) 5. I Thirst. (John 19:28) Every human heart in the world is on the quest for God, though one may not be conscious of it. As said,
our hearts are restless and we always thirst for God. Here at Calvary we see another reality as Jesus proclaimed, “I thirst.” (John 19:28) Not only is the human soul thirsting for God; but God is also thirsting for our souls, thirsting for our love. If our will does not refuse God will surely find us. At whatever condition you and I may be, let us give God a chance. He longs for our love and wants to make us his own. If we give Him a chance God will surely make our lives simply beautiful. 6. It Is Finished. (John 19:29) Jesus realized that his end was drawing very near so He exclaimed, “It is finished!” It was not a sign of relief of thanksgiving because suffering and pain were going to be over. Instead, it was an affirmation that Jesus had done his Father’s will and that his mission has been accomplished. How many of us would be able to say when our time comes, that we have done our best and that we have obeyed and did the will of God. All of us need to seek and do the will of God in our lives, though we may think that it is difficult to know the will of God. But let us remember, the will of God for us here on earth is simple and clear, to know Him; to love Him; to serve Him; to be happy in this world and to be with Him in Heaven. Let us all strive to live well this mission. 7. Father into Your Hands I Commend My Spirit. (Luke 23:46) When everything was accomplished Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father into your hands I commend my spirit.” (Luke 23:46) Death never came to Jesus. No one took his life away; He laid it down by himself. He could easily escape death but He knew that it was not his Father’s plan. He had suffered much and it was time for Him to return to his Father’s glory, thus, placing himself in his Father’s hand Jesus breathed his last. We are all familiar with the hymn, “It was his love and not the nail that bound him to the tree.” Surely it was the greatest love that Christ could show us. Let us never reject this love which Jesus Christ gives us. For many the life of Jesus seemed to have ended in the grave, but for us Christians it is never so. Death could never hold Jesus and if Jesus never arose from the death, our faith as St. Paul said will be in vain. Jesus is always with us as we tread the path towards resurrection. He asks us to take up our daily cross and follow Him. However difficult and painful the journey may be; how confused and sinful we may be, we should never lose heart. Jesus the Way, the Truth and the Life will ever be near us. May the commemoration of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ bring peace, joy, reconciliation, healing and conversion in our families, in our land and in our personal life. May all of us experience special and meaningful celebrations of Good Friday and Easter. and Civil Defense in Nagaland
A
ccording to a reliable source, apart from the State of Nagaland, in every state the department of Home Guards (HG) and Civil Defense (CD) are of two different entities. In Nagaland, the department of HG was established in the year 1988 and the two departments i.e. HG & CD has been amalgamated and mutually working together as one department since the late 90s. The central and the state government bears equal responsibility and share for the Home Guards whereas for Civil Defense - it’s a purely central subject. In neighboring state like Assam, the HG has two regular battalions and HG & CD are provided with good facilities along with handsome salary. On the contrary, we have no regular battalion with very less salary to meet their ends, although the work load is the same or more as compared to other states. Another thing is that, like in other states, SDRF jawans provide 24/7 service. Whereas in the procedural service of Nagaland, they are the first on the scene during natural calamities including man-made disasters and provide adequate service when
it is needed by the common citizens. A sum of Rs. 20,500/is allotted for the SDRF jawan i.e., Rs.16,000/- by the HG and Rs. 4,500/- by the NSDMA, Home Department. Apart from that, in other states, the jawans are provided good facilities and even their salary is more as compared to us, and they are provided life insurance but in Nagaland, no such life insurance is provided with lesser salary. Comparing with other states, our jawans also do what is required of them. They do the right and good work, sweat equally like the jawans of other states. So, jawans of our state must also get what they deserve for rendering their service like in other states and must be provided good salary and incentives. I feel that the State Government must look upon and question themselves in this matter. I don’t work in HG or CD and I have no relation with them either. And my article bears no grudges against any individual, but based on my concern and pity feelings for the HG & CD jawans. I put my article to the people to make it a clear picture of it. Reader’s Post Sir,
The confused Nagas
Looking into the conditions of Nagaland, it can be ascertained that not much has changed when it comes to development in true sense. All round development right from governance to facilitating the society with infrastructural development there has been gaps. As compared to other states, Nagaland is still grappling with the issue of weak density of proper roads, connectivity, and other infrastructural needs. The state has not been able to tap sources for revenue generation and continue to be a begging bowl in the centre. Though the centre has significantly funded the state in various developmental schemes, the state has not been able to match up with other states that are comparatively doing better. The common political discourse is that of ‘bringing change’. It is uncertain what ‘change’ the leaders wish to bring but in election campaigns the visions and claims were high. However, it is hard to believe if the public will vote based on the visions of the candidates or will be an issue based. As a matter of fact, money and muscle power have over powered the society. Money has blindfolded the eyes of the society. Money is made as the power to rule, where a candidate with money is looked as powerful and has more possibility in ruling the government. The mindset of the people of Nagaland had become so narrow where they keep on feeding the worms that harms. People often talk about change, but are we working on it? We talk about clean election, but how much have we contributed in achieving clean and fair election? At the end we only look confused for we don’t really know what we want and neither do we envision to bring that ‘change’ we dream of. fight is for protection Karnataka bans smartBJP wave more powerful ofMydemocracy, says Naidu phones inside polling booths this time, claims PM Modi
Kathua, Apr 14 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday said there is a “more” powerful wave across India in favour of the BJP as compared to that in 2014 and it is now “difficult” for the Congress to “survive”. Modi was in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district to campaign for Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the BJP’s Udhampur Lok Sabha seat candidate Jitendra Singh. “I have visited the entire country. Since I came first to Jammu (last time), since then I have visited several states. I have seen a more powerful wave (in favour of the BJP) this time as compared to 2014 (Lok Sabha polls),” he told an election rally here. Modi, attacking the Congress, alleged that the opposition party is raising questions on the government’s actions on national security to appease their vote bank. “You have seen the surveys these days (on TV and in newspapers). One thing is clear from these surveys -- the possibility of Congress getting number of seats. BJP has a possibility of getting three times more seats than that. This

is what people conducting the surveys are saying,” he said. Therefore, it is difficult for the Congress to survive, Modi claimed. Politicians and elections will keep coming, but the nation is supreme and will remain supreme. Nationalism is the soul of the nation, he said. But, for some people, nationalism is an “insult” and they keep raising questions on a daily basis as to why Modi is talking about security of the nation, the prime minister said. “It is important to talk about the nation, because you get to know what some people want to do to this country. When I talk about nationalism their masks fall off, (and it shows) where they stand?” he said. Modi also hit out at Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh for skip-
ping Saturday’s event to pay respect to those killed in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre 100 years ago. The massacre took place at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar during the Baisakhi festival on April 13, 1919, when troops of the British Indian Army under the command of Colonel Reginald Dyer opened fire at a crowd of people holding a pro-independence demonstration, leaving several dead and scores injured. Singh has “insulted” the Jallianwala Bagh memorial by not attending the government’s memorial service on the day of the incident’s centenary, Modi alleged. “Congress CM (of Punjab) was absconding from the function. He boycotted it, because he was busy in ‘bakhti’ of the Congress ‘parivar’ (family). He went with ‘naamdar (dynasts)’ but not with India’s vice president”, he said. “Was it not a insult to the martyrs?”, Modi asked the rally. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu had visited Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar Saturday and paid tributes to “martyrs” on the 100th anniversary of the British colonial era massacre.
New Delhi, Apr 14 (IANS): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday that his fight for replacing EVMs with ballot papers is to protect democracy in India. Naidu, also the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief, claimed that only 18 out of 191 countries were using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for conducting the polls. He reiterated that the machines can be manipulated and that even the developed countries were not using them. Naidu was speaking at a meeting organised by opposition parties at Constitution Club of India on the topic ‘Save democracy - Transparency in election process and protection of voters rights’. Demanding transparency in the conduct of the elections, the meeting decided to file a review petition in the Supreme Court for counting of VVPAT slips. Paying tribute to Dr B. R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, on the occasion of his 128th birth anniversary, Naidu cited his quote: “Vote is sharper than a knife and if it is rightly used, the voter will be the king and if it is sold, he will remain as a slave.” He alleged that technology was misused during the Telangana elections to

delete 25 lakh votes and when this was pointed out to the poll officials, they merely said “sorry”. Claiming that services of contract employees were used for maintenance of EVMs, he asked the Election Commission if it would own responsibility for their wrong-doings. Naidu also alleged that there was a chance of tampering EVMs by managing the micro controller and chips. He said even the developed countries like Germany preferring ballots for polling. He said there should be transparency in election process. “The Election Commission lost credibility with the non-functioning of EVMs at majority of places in Andhra Pradesh,” Naidu said, claiming that around 20 to 30 per cent EVMs did not function during the elections to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly and the state’s 25 Lok Sabha seats on April 11.
Bengaluru, Apr 14 (IANS): Electorate in Karnataka will not be allowed to carry smart-phones or mobile phones inside the polling booth while going to vote to prevent them from taking selfies or recording videos, an official said on Sunday. “The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) prevents voters from carrying mobile phones or smartphones and cameras inside the polling booth. In fact, no voter will be allowed to take his/her cellphone within 100 metres radius of the booth. “They will have to leave it at home or deposit it with the police personnel before entering the booth,” Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar told IANS. Another poll official admitted that though the MCC has had the ban provision since 2008, it was not enforced strictly during the previous elections for reasons such as manpower shortage and absence of internet-connected smartphones with a camera. “The provision to not allow mobile phones or smart-phones inside the booth was observed more in breach in the past, as not many voters had them a

decade or five years ago or carried them while going to vote,” recalled senior poll official Surya Sen. With most urban voters now using camerawielding smart-phones, during the May 2018 Assembly elections many were caught taking selfies while casting their vote or making videos inside the booth as a proof of exercising their franchise. “This year, the security personnel have been instructed to prevent voters from carrying a mobile or a smartphone inside the booth,” said Kumar. “If the security personnel are busy, the voters can leave their devices with party agents who sit outside the booths with the voter lists,” Kumar added. Polling officials, security personnel and others manning booths, including presiding officers, their
assistants and agents of candidates, however, will be allowed to carry and use smart-phones. Karnataka has 5.11 crore electorate, including 2.6 crore male and 2.5crore female voters and 4,661 others. The number of polling booths in 28 seats across the state has increased 7 per cent from 54,265 in the 2014 elections to 58,186 this year. The state’s 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in the central and southern regions go to polls on April 18, while the remaining 14 parliamentary seats cast their vote on April 23. The 14 constituencies polling in the first phase are Udupi-Chikmagalur, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada, Chitradurga (SC), Tumkur, Mandya, Mysore, Chamarajnagar (SC), Bangalore Rural, Bangalore North, Bangalore Central, Bangalore South, Chikkaballapur and Kolar (SC). Those in the second phase are Chikkodi, Belgaum, Bagalkot, Bijapur (SC), Gulbarga (SC), Raichur (ST), Bidar, Koppal, Bellary (ST), Haveri, Dharwad, Uttara Kannada, Davanagere and Shimoga. The votes will be counted on May 23.

At the Full Nagarjan area where the alternative new bridge is under construction, the columns of the old prewar era bridge still being used only for light vehicles is dangerously under threat of erosion. The impending monsoon rains will add to a major threat on the stability of the bridge due to erosion on the columns as well as the threat of widening of the cracks on the deck. Though the construction of the new bridge alongside the old one is going on in good pace, it still remains unclear if the work can be completed by end of 2019 as expected. Once if both the new bridges under construction are complete, traffic congestion to Dimapur will greatly ease.

Fiscal deficit adhered to Budget target: RBI Governor New Delhi, Apr 14 (IANS): Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has said the gross fiscal deficit has adhered to budgetary targets, and that the current account deficit is expected to be around 2.5 per cent of the GDP in 2018-19. Das said this earlier this week while speaking at the “Governor Talks” event organised on the sidelines of the World Bank-International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings in Washington DC. The Governor’s statement is the first official confirmation at a senior level of the government achieving the fiscal deficit target of 3.4 per cent in the

RBI, while deciding its rate of interest, also takes into account these macro data indicators of the Finance Ministry. Earlier this month, the RBI cut the repo, or its short-term lending rate for commercial banks, by 25 basis points to 6 per cent, and lowered the current fiscal’s GDP growth forecast to 7.2 per cent. “The rate cut is in consonance of achieving the medium term objective of maintaining inflation at the 4 per cent level while

under control.” “It is only the lastminute fares that are seeing a jump. So it is unlikely to impact the summer vacation travel season as most leisure travellers book well in advance and will not be impacted.” The trend of high air fares that was triggered due to Jet’s truncation of its operations was amplified by oil marketing companies, as they increased the price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF). Since March 14, passengers had to shell out high fares as several more flights were cancelled due to grounding of Boeing 737-MAX aircraft. Culmination of these factors are expected to decelerate the growth of air passenger traffic in the country. In a recent note, ratings agency Fitch said that Indian aviation market has seen a sharp increase in air fares in the last few months due to tight supply, which has been worsened by the suspension of the 737 MAX aircraft. “Fitch expects the growth in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), which decelerated to 12.4 per cent in January (2018: 19.9 per cent), to weaken further until supply increases,” the rating agency said in a note.

New Delhi, Apr 14 (IANS): Bharti Airtel in collaboration with FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) on Sunday launched a mobile app, My Circle, to help women in case they face any problem or a panic situation. The application is carrier agnostic which would work on phones with any telecom service network, both Airtel and non-Airtel, Bharti Airtel said in a statement. “My Circle app enables women to send SOS alerts to any five of their family or friends in 13 languages including English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi,
various airports. This led even the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to assess Jet Airways’ financial situation. “With Jet now cancelling international flights, the rising fare situation is set to get worse if capacity is not increased before peak summer travel season,” said Aloke Bajpai, CEO and Cofounder, ixigo. “A comparative analysis of April 2019 fares and what the scenario was last year shows that fares for flights originating from Delhi have increased by 19 per cent and fares for flights from Mumbai are up by 36 per cent. Passengers who are planning their summer leisure travel will also be impacted due to availability of seats.” According to Sharat Dhall, COO (B2C), Yatra. com said: “With the peak travel season having kicked off, we expect airlines to induct more aircrafts to tap into the increased demand on the key business and leisure routes.” “This will also result in a rationalisation of air fares and we expect them to increase only marginally as compared to the same season last year.” In addition, Dhall said: “We see other carriers adding capacity on a daily basis to fill the demand-supply gap and that is keeping fares

operational setbacks and job losses at the airline. If all 1,100 go ahead with the strike, the airline would be left with just 500 senior engineers and qualified pilots. There is widespread worry over the financial situation of the airline, as several employees including some pilots protested against the airlines on April 13 (Saturday) over non-payment of salary. The fate of the airline hangs in the balance as it has hardly any pilots nor aircraft left to sustain daily operations. Jet Airways has already cancelled all its international flights and has issued a statement confirming the same. Not only has the airline failed to pay full salaries to its employees for months but also defaulted on several payments. The airline is currently sitting on a massive pool of debt to the tune of over Rs 8,000 crore. Meanwhile, the Friday
New Delhi/Mumbai, Apr 14 (IANS): The 2019 summer holiday travel season is expected to be marred by high air fares as debt-ridden Jet Airways gradually truncates flight operations, experts said. Even though the airline, lenders and the government are still hopeful of a revival, the current trend might see Jet operating a bare minimum fleet, thus bumping up air fares. “The grounding of aircraft due to liquidity issues with Jet Airways and regulatory directive for the grounding of B737 Max aircraft have resulted in 15 per cent impact on the industry capacity,” said Kinjal Shah, Vice President, Corporate Ratings, ICRA. “This has definitely resulted in passenger inconvenience. Furthermore, it has resulted in a significant increase in fares. With the industry capacity remaining constrained, the fares are expected to remain high in the near term.” Jet’s woes assume criticality as the airline which once operated around 120 aircraft is left with just 16 in its fleet. Last Friday it operated 11 aircraft. The airline has currently suspended international operations till the weekend. It has also cancelled domestic flights, leaving passengers stranded at

Mumbai, Apr 14 (Agencies): Around 1,100 pilots belonging to the National Aviator’s Guild of India (NAG) have threatened to stop flying for cash-strapped airline Jet Airways. “As on today, we have not been paid for nearly three-and-a-half months and we don’t know when we will be paid. So we have decided to go ahead with our call of no-flying from April 15,” a Guild source told PTI on Sunday. Reports indicate that an urgent meeting has been called by the government after the pilots declared to stop flying from Monday, April 15, India Today reported. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Civil Aviation Secretary are expected to discuss the current situation of the airline with the government. The government is expected to raise concern over

deadline for submission of Expression of Interest (EoI) to bid for the airline has closed. Naresh Goyal, who stepped down from the board of directors and lost his position as majority shareholder in the company, also bid for a stake. Lead lender SBI has been looking for a new investor in the airline to acquire up to 75 per cent stake in Jet Airways. The lenders have reportedly decided not to release any more funds till an investor is identified. As part of the rescue plan, the airline was supposed to get Rs 1,500 crore funding from the lenders including SBI; Rs 400 crore in the first tranche and Rs 1,100 crore in the second installment. On the contrary, the airline has received just Rs 200 crore, which it has already spent on fuel costs, partial salaries and payment to vendors. Not just the airline but the journey over the past four-five months have been extremely hard for ground staff employees at the airline, who say they have been humiliated by passengers over the cancellation of flights. They also blame the management over for failing to pay salaries, which have several affected their financial wellbeing.
New Delhi, Apr 14 (Agencies): The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has set June 30 as the deadline to clear all demonetisation cases as well as for the issuance of notices to those who have failed to file the statement of financial transactions (SFT) of highvalue transactions as per Section 285BA of Income-tax Act by May 15, the Indian Express reported. Section 285BA requires recording and reporting of such transactions by specified persons including banks, mutual funds, institutions issuing bonds, and filing the Annual Information Report with details of these highvalue transactions within the required time in the following year, the Financial Express reported. Outlining the April-June interim action plan, the CBDT has also set the deadline for filing of references before NCLT with respect to ‘struck off ’ companies by June 30. The board has already asked tax offices to check financial transactions of around 3 lakh companies, which were de-registered by the government for their suspicious financial credentials, for evading taxes and laundering money, particularly at the time of demonetisation and bring under their ambit the time period (over the last two years) when such firms were removed from the RoC records.

ISIS plotting attacks across Europe: report London, Apr 14 (PTI): The Islamic State terror group is plotting deadly attacks across Europe along the lines of the one carried out on a concert hall in Paris in which 130 people were killed four years ago, a leading British newspaper has reported. The November 2015 Paris attacks were a series of coordinated terror attacks in Paris and the city’s northern suburb of Saint-Denis. In the attacks, three suicide bombers struck outside the Stade de France stadium during a football match, followed by several mass shootings and a suicide bombing at restaurants. A total of 130 people people were killed at the Bataclan concert hall. Documents seen by The Sunday Times reveal detailed plans of terrorist attacks in Europe and the Middle East, funded and controlled by ISIS leaders who are “actively planning” to recreate the Paris-style attack of November 2015. “The operations in Europe are only a fraction of the plans outlined in the documents, which were found on a hard drive dropped by members of an ISIS cell in a firefight near the militants’ final stronghold in Syria earlier this year,” it noted. The documents provide details of how, even with its so-called caliphate destroyed in Syria, the ISIS terror group continues to run sophisticated international networks, move fighters over borders, fund operations and plan bank robberies, vehicle rammings, assassinations and computer hacking. long-time President Omar al-Bashir on Thursday. One of the alliance’s leaders, Omer Eldigair, said in the statement that the demands include restructuring the country’s feared National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), whose chief Salih Ghosh has resigned following the removal of al-Bashir. “We will continue... our sit-in until all our demands are met,” including the formation of a fully civilian government, Eldigair said. The Alliance for Freedom and Change insists that civilian representatives should be accepted onto the military council and that a civilian government should be formed to run daily administration.
“We surely want our demands to be met, but both sides will have to be flexible to reach a deal,” said a protester who spent the night at the army complex. On Saturday, the chief of the military council, General Abdel Fattah alBurhan, vowed to dismantle al-Bashir’s establishment and lifted a night-time curfew with immediate effect. Al-Burhan also pledged that individuals implicated in killing protesters would face justice and that protesters detained under a recent state of emergency would be freed. Al-Burhan took the oath of office on Friday after his predecessor General Awad Ibn Auf stepped down just a day after the removal of al-Bashir.

Iraq’s southern provinces are predominantly inhabited by Shi’ite Arabs, who also suffered oppression and mass killings under Saddam, a Sunni Arab. “The new Iraq must never forget these crimes t h a t we r e c o m m i t t e d against Iraqi people from all groups,” he said.

Stratolaunch makes its historic first flight from the Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, Calif. (AP/PTI)
Los Angeles, Apr 14 (IANS): The world’s largest aircraft, developed by aerospace venture Stratolaunch, completed its first flight test on Saturday. With a dual fuselage design and wingspan greater than the length of an American football field, the airplane took off from Mojave Air and Space Port in California at 6:58 am (Pacific Time), said Stratolaunch in a statement, Xinhua reported. Achieving a maximum speed of 189 miles (302.4 km) per hour, the plane flew for 2.5 hours over the Mojave Desert at altitudes
up to 17,000 feet. As part of the initial flight, the pilots evaluated aircraft performance and handling qualities before landing successfully back at the Mojave Air and Space Port, according to the company’s statement. “What a fantastic first flight,” said Jean Floyd, CEO of Stratolaunch. “Today’s flight furthers our mission to provide a flexible alternative to ground launched systems. We are incredibly proud of the Stratolaunch team, today’s flight crew, our partners at Northrup Grumman’s Scaled Com-
posites and the Mojave Air and Space Port,” he added. Regarding initial results from Saturday’s test flight, Stratolaunch said the test team performed a variety of flight control maneuvers to calibrate speed and test flight control systems, including roll doublets, yawing maneuvers, pushovers and pullups, and steady heading side slips. Moreover, it conducted simulated landing approach exercises at a max altitude of 15,000 feet mean sea level. S t r a t o l a u n c h wa s founded by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 2011 to develop the large carrier airplane as a flying launch pad for orbital-class rockets. The aircraft has a world-record wingspan of 385 feet, and is 238 feet long. It is wider than any airplane on the planet. It weighs half a million pounds, according to a CNN report.
Democrats demand Trump tax returns Washington, Apr 14 (IANS): House Democrats have issued Donald Trump’s administration a “hard” deadline of April 23 to turn over the President’s tax returns, pushing back against Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s scepticism over their request for the private records. Representative Richard E. Neal, chairman of the House Ways and Means
Committee, on Saturday sent a two-page letter to Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Charles Rettig rebuffing Mnuchin’s statement earlier this week that Treasury would miss House Democrats’ initial April 10 deadline for the returns, reports The Washington Post. Mnuchin’s concerns “lack merit”, Neal wrote. “Please know that, if you fail to comply, your
failure will be interpreted as a denial of my request,” the Massachusetts Democrat added in the letter. Mnuchin told the media on Saturday that he was trying to move carefully in overseeing a request that raises “very, very complicated” legal questions, emphasising that his decision could have long-lasting repercussions for future requests by Congress to the IRS.

Khartoum, Apr 14 (Agencies): Sudan’s protest organisers have presented their demands, including the creation of a civilian government, in talks with the country’s new military rulers, the group spearheading the demonstrations said. According to Aljazeera, a statement by the Alliance for Freedom and Change, an umbrella group leading the protests, said a 10-member delegation submitted its list of demands to the military during a meeting on Saturday. Thousands remained encamped outside the army headquarters in the capital overnight into Sunday to keep up the pressure on the military council that took power after overthrowing

‘Jesus Christ’ is our motivation: Whitecross
A
merican Christian metal band from Illinois, Whitecross is set to perform on April 16 at DDSC stadium Dimapur, from 5 p.m. onwards. In an exclusive interview with Nagaland Post, members of the band said Jesus was the sole motivation that keeps the band and everything together. The current line-up of the band comprises of Peter Stenlund on the vocals, Rex Carroll on the guitars, Benny Ramos on the bass and Michael Feighan on the drums. Here is the interview in full: NP: What is the secret behind the success of Whitecross in an atmosphere which was largely dominated by secular rock bands especially during the time of the inception of the band? WC: I (Rex) think that the success of Whitecross, or any band has to do with if you have a vision of what your band is going to be about and you have a very strong identity. If you guys that have different goals you’ll not last together for very long but Whitecross (members) has had the same vision and the same goal from the beginning. NP: What were the challenges faced most by the band? WC: I (Michael) would say that the challenges we face the most, one would be, we all live so far apart and so getting together to rehearse as a band is very difficult and I know it’s frustrating for all of us but we just do what we can do. I think another difficulty is wanting to put
out new materials but now that there’s no labels really and so you’ve gotta find a plan yourself, you gotta find the resources yourself and then all of getting together, those to me are the biggest challenges that we face. As far as like new music (is concerned) we’ve had a new kind of bubbling happening, we feel like there’s a real possibility that we could release some new music which before, I think we all had kind of got to the point of where we’d given up of that really happening. NP: Are the other original Whitecross members still active in the music scene? WC: (Rex) Not so much, Scott Wenzel is retired, Mark Hedl was working in computers, Jon Sproule is youth pastor and various members have come and gone. There is a few, like Barry Graul, he plays with MercyMe, Tracy Ferrie is still around, he’s done really well, he played with Stryper for awhile and he played with Boston. Some of them are still out there and some of them have gone to do other things and we’re just a band and we just keep trucking along. The ones of us that are left here we keep plugging along. NP: What is the greatest source of inspiration for the band? WC: (Benny) We have a main inspiration and that’s Jesus Christ, though music is prevalent thing with and keeps us bonded together and we have the same vision that way but having the same mentality is of Christ being our Lord is really our main focus and our main vision. And that’s what kinda
L-R: Rex Carroll, Peter Stenlund, Benny Ramos and Michael Feighan.
keeps everything together and keeps us moving. NP: Do you think Christian metal/rock bands will thrive again like it once did during the late 80’s and early 90’s? WC: (Rex) That’s really hard to say, there’s so many things that has changed. Like the whole music business and all that stuff. At the same time I see that well in the western world like Sweden and Scandinavian (countries) we’re very wealthy, we have everything that we need and more than that and in those times (80’s and 90’s) music tends to go way alil bit but I think we were hitting harder over there in those times. Usually what happens is that music becomes more important and then music with a message becomes more important so maybe or maybe not, I can’t really say. I think its hard to come up to the level of 80’s cause that was kind of weird but I think it can be better than it is right now at least. NP: What is the song writing process of Whitecross?
WC: Its evolving. Generally speaking, typically, I (Rex) will start a song with a musical idea, a guitar riff or something and in the previous incarnations of the band the vocalist would write lyrics and that’s the thing that was kind of, not to be negative, but that kept us in a box. But now in the new version of the band it a more give and take and more of an open thing, for example, Peter is an accomplished writer of his own so I do believe that going forward we will have a more open process where we can all participate although it’s true that I continue to kind of somewhat define the sound of the band through the guitar riffs but even there is a lot where everybody can give inputs. There’s no rules that only one person can be a writer. So I think there will be a lot of collaboration as we go forward within the band. NP: Which Whitecross song is the most performed by the band be it small gigs or mega concerts? WC: We all agree that it’s the song ‘In The Kingdom’ is the most requested
and that’s the one that we all make sure that we perform in every show. NP: Which song do you consider as the most successful among Whitecross songs? WC: It’s definitely ‘In The Kingdom’, no question. I (Michael) see radio reports and reports from Spotify, In The Kingdom is up there, No Second Chances is another song which is very popular for YouTube video plays and those are the two songs that are the two most popular according to the fans and according to what people listen to. NP: What is your favorite Whitecross song? WC: I (Michael) like ‘Down’, I really enjoy playing it as well. For many many years my (Benny) favourite Whitecross song has been ‘You Will Find It There’ because it speaks to me not only lyrically but also musically it always has been one that’s kind of like get into my inner system just like it’s one of those good ones. All of the songs are like my (Rex) children, (laughs), you like all of your children
in different ways. NP: Which song do you find the most challenging technically? WC: I (Rex) have a really bad habit of intentionally writing things (songs) that are above my own ability to play. I always thought it would be great idea to challenge myself, force myself to improve on the guitar but it gets really hard to keep up with that over the years so maybe going forward we’ll just write some songs that’ll be easier to play, I don’t know but I hope so. I (Benny) think the two for me is ‘Attention Please’ and ‘Because of Jesus’ because they have really cool guitar riffs and it took me awhile to kind of get those and get them correctly (while performing). And even now if I occasionally get away from it for awhile then I’m gonna have to relearn it and now we’re doing Attention Please for this particular tour and that’s so challenging one for me. I (Rex) think that ‘Attention Please’ is a difficult one and ‘No Second Chances’ and some other as well (laughs), I have problems everywhere (laughs again). I (Michael) would say ‘Good Enough’ is one of the more challenging ones where I have to focus. NP: What songs can the fans expect from the band during the Dimapur concert? WC: ‘Living On A Prayer’ maybe (laughs). Well they can expect some of the oldies like ‘Enough Is Enough’, I (Rex) guess there might be ‘In The Kingdom’ somewhere, maybe ‘Atten-
tion Please’ will show up and then we’ll see and maybe some of the classics. One thing I’ve really noticed about these two concerts in India, (Shillong and Dimapur), is that the audience here, they really seem to gravitate towards the acoustic songs, the ballads and the power ballads so we have really listened to that. We hear you and we have gone out of our way to include some of those songs in the setlist which is specifically only just for you guys because we love our audience in India. We’re very excited to meet you and to play these songs for you. We’re happy that you like these songs so I hope that everybody will be happy with what they hear. Infact we’re doing songs we’ve never done before (Michael adds). NP: Will Whitecross come up with any new material or say an album anytime in the future? WC: We’re having a really free range conversation where we’re just kicking around alot of ideas and there’s actually a backlog of some songs. There’s a song that Peter wrote which I (Rex) am really excited about, I think we’re going to confiscate it and turn it into a Whitecross song. And so hopefully if the Lord opens the door and it becomes possible to make a new album, hopefully the answer is yes. NP: Does the band have any plans of retiring soon either from live performance or also as a band? WC: No, not as of now. We’ll see how our backs hold up in the next 15 years
maybe. Even at our old age maybe our bodies aren’t moving around as quickly as it used to when we were 20 but our fingers still do and our spirits still do so we’re not planning on retiring. NP: Any advice to the scores of musicians in Nagaland? WC : A c o u p l e o f things I (Michael) would say is, take your craft really seriously, put the time in to work and become the best you can be at your craft. And if it’s Christian music then obviously, really seek God to show you your path and what way to go but doing your diligence as far as working hard at your craft and just being the best that you can be. We got the chance to see some really good worship teams yesterday and obviously there’s some talent here. I would suggest that they would keep on pursuing it even sometimes when you realize maybe there’s not very many people listening or sometimes it feels like people just don’t care but keep working and people will see the talents God has given you. All you need to do is to keep pushing. Whitecross members will be reaching Dimapur today. Prior to the concert on April 16, the band members will be holding a workshop at Father’s House Church, 7th Milestone, Chümoukedima, from 10 a.m. Organizers have informed that tickets to the concert will be made available on the date of the concert at the venue from 1 p.m. onwards. Ed Sheeran co-wrote the group’s single “Make It Right”, the fourth track on their album. “This is the first K pop song I’ve had the honour of helping write. Check out the rest of the project too,” the four-time Grammy winner wrote on Instagram. Earlier this week, Stone revealed to TV host Jimmy Fallon that she was blown away by the group’s rehearsal. “I just saw their sound-
check today and I involuntarily screamed. I’m actually not kidding. It came out of my body. It was like, ‘Ahhh!’ It was like a chemical reaction that happens. They’re incredible,” she told Fallon. 2019 has been a whirlwind year for BTS. In February, the K-pop sensation made their Grammy Awards debut, even serving as presenters at the awards show. In addition, their album Love Yourself: Tear was nominated for best recording package, making BTS’ project the first Korean album to be recognized in any category by the Recording Academy. (IANS)
Actor Jeremy Renner says he knows nothing about a possible series on his character Hawkeye, but says that all the characters based on the Marvel Comics are rich enough to get a back story. According to a report, Renner’s Hawkeye, an archery ace, is the latest member of the Marvel Cin-
ematic Universe (MCU) to have his own series. There is also buzz about a limited series being developed on MCU characters like Falcon and Winter Soldier, as well as Loki, Vision, and Scarlet Witch. Asked about the Hawkeye original series, Renner told IANS here: “I think all the characters that
Stan Lee had created and that Feige (Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige) has now taken the reins of... all the characters in this world are deserving of or are rich enough to get a back story and character development.
“It’s a very rich world. Hence why we have so many films told on the big screen in a global way. So any character I feel like... now we have a raccoon,” he said referring to Rocket from the “Guardians of the Galaxy”.
He feels that all the characters of MCU are well thought out. But as for the series, he told select media in a group interview: “I don’t know anything about that. I heard some rumours about it.” (IANS)

Goa clinch Super Cup 2019 title
FC Goa players celebrate after beating Chennaiyin FC in the final of the Hero Super cup 2019 football at Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.(PTI)
Bhubaneswar, Apr 14 (IANS): FC Goa emerged as champions of the 2019 Super Cup as they pipped Chennaiyin FC 2-1 in a tense affair at the Kalinga Stadium, here on Saturday. Despite Goa being billed as the favourites to take home the crown, it was Chennaiyin, who started the game as the better of the two sides. Rafael Augusto, Anirudh Thapa and Dhanpal
Ganesh controlled proceedings from midfield. As the game crossed the 20-minute mark, Chennaiyin started imposing bundles of pressure on the Goa defence. They would create three consecutive chances in a space of three minutes but could not make any of them count. The first would fall to Augusto, who’s effort from Thapa’s cutback was brilliantly blocked by Mourtada Fall, denying an almost
certain goal. From the resulting corner, defender Eli Sabia had a chance to break the deadlock but his fierce near-post shot was well saved by Mohammad Nawaz in goal. The young goalkeeper was given no respite as he had to prove his fine shotstopping abilities when Ganesh’s header seemed destined for the far post. Given the constant onslaught of pressure, fans in the sta-
‘Dhoni should have been banned for 2-3 games’: Virender Sehwag
M S Dhoni confronting umpire Gandhe for backtracking on a waist high no-ball. (PTI)
New Delhi, Apr 14 (PTI): Former India opener Virender Sehwag feels MS Dhoni was let off easily for his angry outburst against umpire Ulhas Gandhe and he should have been “banned for two to three games” to set a proper example. MS Dhoni was docked only 50 per cent of his match fees for entering the field of play to confront Gandhe for backtracking on a waist-high no-ball. MS Dhoni has been criticised by one and all but Sehwag
is the first A list former India cricketer to demand suspension for his one-time teammate. “I feel Dhoni was let off easy and should have been banned for at least 2-3 games. Because if he did this, tomorrow another captain can do the same. Then what is the value of an umpire,” Sehwag, known for his straight talk, was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. Sehwag didn’t mince any words when he said

that a fitting punishment would have set a precedent for others. “I feel he should have been banned for a few games by IPL to set an example. He should have stayed outside and instead have talked to the fourth umpire with the walkie talkie,” Sehwag said. “I feel he shouldn’t have come to the ground when there are two CSK members already and they were equally inquisitive regarding the no-ball,” he opined. Dhoni’s passion whenever he wears the yellow CSK jersey is unmatched and at times his involvement for his franchise in the cash-rich league shows. In fact, Sehwag cheekily mentioned that he has never seen MS Dhoni so agitated when he led India. “Had he done this for the Indian team, I would have been happy. I have never seen him so angry during his captaincy days for the Indian team. So I feel he became a little too emotional for the Chennai team,” Sehwag said.
dium were left bemused that Chennaiyin had not put themselves in the lead yet. Slowly but steadily, Goa started gaining a foothold in the game and could have scored themselves if not for some questionable finishing from Jackichand Singh. The winger only managed to sky his effort after some clever work from Hugo Boumous down the wing. In the end, both sides went into the break without finding the back of the net. However, that would change from the outset of the second half, as Goa drew first blood through their mercurial forward Corominas. After Thapa cheaply gave the ball away near the halfway line, Boumous drove towards Chennaiyin’s goal, before forcing Karanjit to make a save. However, the rebound fell perfectly to the Spaniard, who had the simple task of tapping the ball home. Just as it seemed that Goa would run away with the tie, Chennaiyin were back level. Raphael Augusto pounced on a loose ball just outside the box, firing a shot which
Nishikori tips Federer for clay comeback success
MONTE CARLO, Apr 14 (AFP): Roger Federer may not be playing at the Monte Carlo Masters but the Swiss legend was still at the forefront of 2018 finalist Key Nishikori’s thoughts on Sunday. “Everything is possible (for Federer),” Asia’s top player predicted. Federer is due for a return to the dirt after two seasons completely off the surface in three weeks at Madrid, his lone scheduled tuneup prior to the French Open, which he last played in 2015. “It (winning Roland Garros) might be tougher for him than winning the Australian Open or Wimbledon, but I’m sure he can do anything if he tries 100 per cent,” said Nishikori. “He’s a lot different than anyone else on the Tour,” added the world number three who lost the final here a year ago as Rafael Nadal won his 11th title in the principality. “I’m sure Roger can do very well on clay. He’s still my idol, he’s the best player in history. I’m happy to see him playing more tournaments, I hope I can play him again,” said the player who has beaten the 37-year-old Swiss three times and most recently last November at the year-end ATP Finals.
took a massive deflection to deceive Nawaz. However, the Gaurs didn’t let the goal deter them as they would soon find themselves back in the lead. Corominas was once again at the heart of the action as he picked up the ball 30 yards from goal and released Brandon with a perfectly weighted through-ball. The small-statured winger was quick on his feet as he beat Mailson Alves and Karanjit to slide the ball home - a truly remarkable goal. As the match reached its final quarter, Goa could have sealed the tie when Boumous once again let Jackichand through. The winger had only Karanjit to beat but could not make the most of it. The rebound fell to Corominas, who was brought down inside the box. However, the referee waved away Goa’s claims of a penalty, instead pointing towards a goal-kick for Chennaiyin. Nevertheless, that would prove to be inconsequential as Goa held on till the final whistle to claim their first-ever Hero Super Cup trophy.
Ethiopian runners Burka and Milaw win Paris Marathon

Paris, Apr 14 (Agencies): Ethiopians Abrha Milaw and Gelete Burka on Sunday won the men and women’s races to end Kenya’s dominance at Paris Marathon. Milaw shattered Kenya’s Paul Lonyangata’s dream of a historic hat-trick when he pulled away with two kilometres to go to win in 2 hours, 07 minutes and 04 seconds. Another Ethiopian and prerace favourite Asefa Mengistu finished second in 2:07:24 as Lonyan-
gata settled for third place in 2:07:28. Kenyans Morris Gachaga and Barselius Kipyego finished fourth and fifth in 2:07:45 and 2:07:57 respectively. The Kenyans had won the last four editions of the race before Milaw struck to recapture the title Kenenisa Bekele had won for Ethiopia last in 2014 with a course record time of 2:05:04 that still stands to date. Kenyan women were locked out of the podium finish when Burka, who last year ran a
personal best of 2:20:45 in Dubai before winning Ottawa Marathon in 2:22:17 the same year, clocked 2:22:14 to win. Burka’s compatriots Azmera Gebru and newcomer Azmera Abreha finished second and third in 2:22:52 and 2:23:36. Kenya’s Sally Chepyego settled fifth as Kenya relinquished the reign to Ethiopia, having won the previous three editions. Clémence Calvin of France settled fourth in a personal best of 2:23:36.
Hamilton wins Formula One’s 1000th race
SHANGHAI, Apr 14 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : L e w i s Hamilton won the Chinese Grand Prix to seize the overall lead from his Mercedes team mate Valtteri Bottas in Formula One’s 1,000th world championship race on Sunday. According to Reuters, Bottas, who had made a poor start from pole and lost out to five times world champion Hamilton into the first corner, was second for his team’s third one-two finish in as many races this season. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel took third place, his first podium appearance of the campaign, with Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly denying the German an extra point with the fastest lap right at the end. The win was the 75th of Hamilton’s career, second in a row after his lucky triumph in Bahrain two weeks ago, and sixth in China. “To have a one-two together is really special in the 1,000th Grand Prix. The start was where I was able to make the difference, and after that it’s kind of history,” said the Briton, who also won the 900th in Bahrain in 2014.
Lewis Hamilton holds aloft the trophy on the podium after finishing first in the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday.
He is now just 16 victories short of Michael Schumacher’s all-time record tally of 91. There has yet to be a winner this year from pole position, with Bottas triumphant in the Australian opener in similar fashion to Hamilton in China. “I think I lost it in the start. The car was feeling okay and otherwise the pace was similar,” said the Finn.
“But in the first stint in the dirty air I couldn’t follow. Shame about the start, I got some wheel spin when I went over the white line, the start-finish line which is immediately after my box, and I lost it there.” Vettel’s team mate Charles Leclerc, on pole in Bahrain but denied victory there after a late loss of power while leading, finished fifth behind Red
Bull’s Max Verstappen, who briefly went wheel-to-wheel with Vettel for the final podium spot. Leclerc got ahead of Vettel at the start but was then instructed by Ferrari to let his team mate through, an order the Monegasque complied with while making clear that he did not agree. “I’m happy to be on the podium,” said Vettel. “But (the race was) tough because we tried to stick with them but just couldnt.” Gasly was sixth, ahead of Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo - the Australian’s first finish of the season - and Racing Point’s Sergio Perez. Kimi Raikkonen finished ninth for Alfa Romeo and Thailand’s Alexander Albon, who started from the pitlane after missing qualifying due to a heavy crash in final practice, took the final point for Toro Rosso. Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg, McLaren’s Lando Norris and Toro Rossos Daniil Kvyat were the three retirements. The last two and the other McLaren of Carlos Sainz were involved in a three-car tangle on the opening lap that resulted in a brief virtual safety car period.
No. 4 spot in focus with India set to announce WC squad Shields maintains unbeaten record
The Team India squad for the 2019 World Cup will be announced at 3 pm on Monday.
New Delhi, Apr 14 (Agencies): The India squad for World Cup 2019 will be announced at a press conference in Mumbai on Monday. This will follow a meeting between the five-man national selection committee led by MSK Prasad, India captain Virat Kohli and chief coach Ravi Shastri at the BCCI Cricket Centre in Mumbai, NDTV reported. According to reports, India will stick to the ODI squad they have fielded over K Y M C
the recent few months -- in the ODI series against Australia and New Zealand -but there may be one or two surprise inclusions made. The big question mark is over the No.4 spot in the batting order. Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli pick themselves for the top three spots. KL Rahul is likely to be included as the back-up opener. Ambati Rayudu, who has been India’s No.4 since last year’s Asia Cup, had an indifferent Australia series
and has not set the IPL on fire either. Rayudu’s highest score in the Australia series was 18. Even against New Zealand in January, he only managed one 50+ score. Rayudu’s form has opened the door for many more names to be up for discussion. Ajinkya Rahane, who has been out of the ODI squad since last year, Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik and Vijay Shankar are likely to be the main contenders to replace Rayudu. There have been some
extreme suggestions, like Sourav Ganguly’s endorsements of Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant for the No.4 spot. On the other hand, Akash Chopra has suggested that the squad should not be tinkered with before the showpiece tournament. “Rayudu may not be the best Number 4 in the world but he is the best India has at the moment. Hope the selectors realise that on 15th. Technical shortcomings etc. had to be thought about before giving him the #4 slot for months leading up to the WC. Now that he’s been invested in (and he’s delivered reasonably okay), he must be persisted with,” the former India opener said in a series of tweets earlier this week. Kedar Jadhav is the other middle order batsman who picks himself. There is also a question mark over who the selectors will pick as the reserve wicketkeeper, who can also be called upon to play at No.6 after MS Dhoni. Rishabh Pant’s matchwinning mettle, combined with his recent form - in the IPL and in the Australia series - will make it very hard to ignore him. Dinesh
Karthik, who has also been part of the ODI squad over the last year, is the other contender. Hardik Pandya and Vijay Shankar are the pace bowling all-rounders in contention. Ravindra Jadeja might get an opportunity if the selectors decide to opt for a three-man pace attack. Given what Jadeja can also add to the team with his fielding, the selectors just might decide to rely on Pandya or Shankar to shoulder the fourth pacer’s responsibilities. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar would seem to be the automatic choices to be the three fast bowlers. Similarly, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are also likely to be the two spinners. In case the selectors decide that a fourth paceman is essential, there are quite a few names which can be up for discussion. Deepak Chahar and Navdeep Saini have impressed for their respective teams in this year’s IPL. Ishant Sharma has also been in great form of late, but he has not featured in India’s ODI plans since the last World Cup.
Claressa Shields celebrates after defeating Christina Hammer and unifying the middleweight division. (Stephanie Trapp/Showtime)
L o n d o n, A p r 1 4 (Agences): American Claressa Shields maintained her unbeaten record and unified the women’s middleweight division with a unanimous decision win over Christina Hammer on Saturday. All three judges scored in favour of the 24-year-old 98-92 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Her WBA, WBC and IBF belts and Hammer’s WBO belt were up for grabs in the bout. “I am the greatest woman of all time,
give me that,” Shields, whose record moves to 9-0, said after the fight. Hammer, 28, had held the WBO middleweight title since October 2010. “You all told me I couldn’t do it,” said Shields, who won Olympic middleweight gold at London 2012 and Rio 2016. “Women’s boxing is on fire. I cannot wait to see the next super fight, whoever is in between. “Right now, I’m the undisputed champion of
the world.” Shields called out undisputed female welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus and challenged her to a fight. “Respect to Claressa Shields for becoming the Undisputed Champion tonight. Tonight was not my night but I will be back,” Hammer wrote on Twitter after the fight. Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry tweeted her support for Shields, dubbing her a “star of the sport”. K Y M C

Momota wins Singapore Open
Kento Momota
SINGAPORE, Apr 14 (Agencies): Japan’s Kento Momota withstood a barrage of smashes from Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting to rally for a thrilling 10-21 21-19 21-13 victory Sunday in the Singapore Open final. According to Scroll.in, the world champion struggled to contain his powerful Indonesian opponent, who was finding both corners of the court in the first half of the match. But the top seed dug deep to fight back from 16-11 behind in the second game to force a decider. Momota trailed again in the last game as Ginting
sought a third straight upset win in as many days. But the left-hander used a combination of improvisation and guile to craft a run of 13 points in 14 to seal a stunning victory with a disguised drop shot on his first match point. “I felt my opponent played better than me today but I was able to capitalise when he got tired,” Momota, who also won the Singapore title in 2015, told reporters. “He tried to push a little too hard in the second game but I kept telling myself to stay patient and never give up.” In the women’s singles final, Tai Tzu-ying claimed
her second Singapore Open title with a 21-19 21-15 victory over Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara. The Taiwanese world number one backed up last week’s Malaysia Open triumph with a display full of speed, skill and spontaneity to outfox the world number three in 40 minutes. The result improved her headto-head record against the energetic Okuhara to 5-4. The match soon settled into a rhythm with Tai using deft drop shots and disguised smashes to keep Okuhara moving, while her opponent went high and long in an attempt to pin the top seed to the back of the court. There was little to separate them in the early exchanges but Tai managed to string together runs of points in the later stages of both games to pull clear, the 24-year-old completing the win with a crosscourt smash. In other finals, Thail a n d ’s D e c h a p o l P u a varanukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai eased to a 21-14 21-6 victory over Malaysia’s Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing in the mixed doubles.
Kohli fined Rs 12 lakh for slow over-rate
Mohali, Apr 14 (IANS): Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Virat Kohli has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) match against the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) here. As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Kohli was fined Rs 12 lakh on Saturday. Bottom-placed RCB finally ended their winning draught in the ongoing season as Kohli’s scintillating 53-ball 67 followed by AB de Villiers (59* off 38) and Marcus Stoinis’ (28* off 16) fruitful knocks guided them to a thumping eightwicket victory over KXIP at the I.S. Bindra Stadium. It was the 85-run stand between Kohli and de Villers before the South African got involved in a match-winning 46-run partnership with Stoinis which handed Bangalore a much needed win.

CSK beat KKR; put foot in playoffs Ko l kat a , A pr 1 4 (IANS): Imran Tahir and Suresh Raina helped Chennai Super Kings (CSK) put one foot in the playoffs as they got past Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by five wickets in their IPL return leg fixture at the Eden Gardens here on Sunday. CSK, who had defeated KKR in their first meeting also, consolidated their spot at the top of the table with 14 points from eight matches. KKR, on the other hand, slumped to their third straight defeat, remaining on eight points from eight matches. Tahir (4/27) first played a pivotal role in restricting KKR to 161/8. Chasing a modest 162 for victory, Raina struck an unbeaten 58 off 42 balls (7x4; 1x6), his 36th IPL fifty, adding 41 runs with Ravindra Jadeja (31 off 17 balls not out; 4x5) for the sixth wicket. Dhoni and Raina combined for a 40-run fifth wicket stand before the former was trapped by Narine, with reviews not going in the former India skipper’s favour. In the last five overs, the hosts could muster only 28 runs with only one four at the cost of three wickets. Shardul (2/18), who along

Liverpool back on top after Salah stunner
Lon d on , A pr 1 4 (Agencies): Mohamed Salah’s incredible long-range rocket helped Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League with a crucial 2-0 win over Chelsea. Manchester City’s 3-1 win at Crystal Palace earlier on Sunday piled pressure on the Reds and they passed the test thanks to two secondhalf goals in almost as many minutes. Star man Salah rose to an emotionally charged occasion with a thumping 25-yard effort that whistled into the top-left corner and doubled the home side’s lead following Sadio Mane’s headed opener. The victor y, Liverpool’s first against Chelsea at Anfield in seven Premier League meetings, restored a two-point lead at the top for Jurgen Klopp’s men and exorcised the demons of the infamous 2-0 loss in this fixture that shattered their 2013-14 title hopes. vider of Salah’s opportunity, shot wide from the Egypt star’s cut-back. Chelsea encountered its first real disruption when a knee problem forced Antonio Rudiger to the bench before the break. Two greater blows followed after the restart. Mane arrived at the far post to nod in Jordan Henderson’s cute cross in the 51st minute and, moments later, Salah cut
inside and sent Anfield ecstasy. Hazard had an excellent pair of chances to hush the electric atmosphere, but the Belgian hit the base of the left post following Emerson Palmieri’s ball over the top and then found Alisson from Willian’s right-sided delivery. Maurizio Sarri’s side otherwise had precious few opportunities as its grip on fourth weakened.
