NL Cong to counter BJP’s agenda
DIMAPUR, APR 15 (NPN): Recently formed Nagaland Congress (NC) party, a break-away of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), has raised its pitch against communalism and vowing to defend Christian faith and practices as a matter of conviction as well as Constitutional rights. A press note by NC media cell however made its stand clear that it was not against BJP as a political party but was determined to “fight tooth and nail against BJP’s politics of anti-Christianity” since the party (BJP) was all out to promote Hindu. “Whether NPF should continue the marriage with BJP till swamis and yogis are sufficiently born to saffronize Nagaland is best left to supporting people to decide when they can. And in this grave situation million dollar question is whether the Church should remain silent because consequence of silence may fall upon the Church,” NC stated. Taking note of BJP leaders’ public statements that their party was optimistic to form the next gov-

ernment in Nagaland, NC however questioned-- “how can BJP have hope of this possibility in the state of Nagaland for Christ, when anti Christianity movement has reached our doorstep, unless they have rightly observed the accommodative spirit of NPF on one side and tepid attitude of church bodies on other side?” Maintaining that a small state like Nagaland may be seen as an insignificant state, yet, NC said Nagaland was now seemingly considered a thorn in the body politics of future Hindu Rashtra. In this regard, NC asked as to who could disprove that Nagaland was under threat? NC said BJP, intoxicated with overwhelming electoral support and without formidable opposition from any corner, was hell bound to make India a Hindu Rashtra- one nation, one culture, one diet, one religion. NC alleged that for BJP there cannot be a Christian state, for that matter no Christian in Hindu Rashtra. “Either we are Indian and not Christian or
Christian and not Indian. This, they are determined to fulfil by 2021,” Nagaland Congress added. Further hitting out at BJP, NC said imposition of Good Governance Day on Christmas Day, Judges Day and now Digital India Day on Good Friday and Yoga Day on Father’s Day, was clear demonstration of BJP’s total contempt towards Christianity and Christian community of India. It said the state government’s belated decisions not to observe these occasions on given date clashing with Christian calendar after firm protest made by Mizoram, Meghalaya and even Arunachal Pradesh clearly indicated deep-rooted marriage between NPF & BJP. Non-observance of these occasions on given date was non issue, however, NC said the core issue was BJP’s declared position to phase out Christianity in a new India and NPF’s unconcealed position not to antagonize BJP. I n c i d e n t a l l y, N C pointed out that NPF was “illogically even more na-
NE to witness heavy rains; cyclone likely in Bay of Bengal NEW DELHI, APR 15 (AGENCIES): Not even 24 hours have been passed that the low-pressure area has intensified further into a depression which is much likely to give rains over the North Eastern states of the country. A tropical depression formed on Saturday evening, local time, across the central Bay of Bengal. In general, also Northeast India gets bestowed with good pre-Monsoon showers during this time of the season and with the system approaching towards the state, the rain intensity is further likely to scale up. The depression which is at present seen in the west-southwest of Mayabander in Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India will also fuel in some hefty showers. Heavy squalls with thunderstorms are also likely to lash the region. This depression is seen moving towards the Myanmar coast. Moreover, as per Skymet Weather report, a cyclonic circulation is seen over East Assam and adjoining area. Another trough is also seen extending from the foothills of Uttar Pradesh up to Nagaland across the North Eastern states. tional minded than national parties.” “We are seeing not a convergence but submerged of regionalism into a new brand of Hindu nationalism,” NC stated. Nagaland C accused NPF that it diligently nurtured a tiny lotus in tiny pond all the while although knowing fully that the plant could one day become a thorn in Christian society. “If BJP has grown larger and bolder, it is not by people’s choice, it is NPF’s love marriage with BJP,” NC asserted. NC was apprehensive that whatever trials the state had gone through and broke through in the past, Naga identity, social & religious practices, were now most dangerously put to trial during this dangerous NPF-BJP marriage. “And at no point of time in the past was Article 371A questioned and challenged as daringly done during these three consecutive terms of NPF-led DAN Govt. In so far as religion is concerned NPF might have created a Frankenstein out of BJP,” the Nagaland Congress stated.

IMPHAL, APR 15: In what could be described as the first sign of a crack in the one-month old BJPled government in Manipur, the health minister, L Jayentakumar, has submitted his resignation as cabinet minister. Jayentakumar, who has resigned citing interference to his authority, said his position regarding resignation as minister would be known after April 18. The NPP leader submitted his resignation letter to chief minister N Biren Singh on Friday. In his resignation letter, Jayentakumar protested against not consulting him before the suspension of the health director, Dr. O Ibomcha, who was recently placed under suspension from his service by an order of the state department of personnel, the department under chief minister. Jayentakumar alleged that the manner in which the health director was suspended was interference in his work as a minister in-charge of the department. “I may not be able to get visions materialised as expected since there have been so many interference to my authority,” the resignation letter dated April 13 stated. Responding to a volley of questions from media persons on the sideline of a function here today, Jayentakumar said whether he would quit as cabinet minister or not would be confirmed after chief minister, who is currently outside the state, return on April 18. “I would come to you after April 18,” he said. State chief minister, N Biren Singh, is currently in Odisha to attend BJP’s national executive meeting at Bhubaneshwar. “I will meet the chief minister soon after he comes back to Imphal. Before leaving Imphal yesterday (Friday), he (chief minister) called me over phone and asked the reason,” Jayentakumar said.

DIMAPUR, APR 15 (NPN): NMA president, Mrs. Abeiu Meru on April 14, when contacted over mobile by this newspaper, launched a tirade against the media for baseless reporting on various events which she alleged, were done “without consulting NMA”. Further, she said while things had quieted down, the report on the application in the Supreme Court published on April 13, 2017 in this newspaper had stirred up things. Mrs. Meru warned that “if anything happens to the NMA (leaders) then the media will be held responsible”. Again on April 14, a press note was issued by Abeiu Meru (president) and Rosemary Dzüvichü (advisor) along the same charges but with a threat/ intimidation that the Editor of this newspaper would be held responsible, if anything happened to them. What riled the women leaders was the report on April 13, on the application purportedly submitted by the two women leaders, through their counsel(s) for deletion of their names as petitioners from the SLP in the Supreme Court and which was accepted. In the same order, the People’s Union for Civil Liberties
RMSA teachers to launch phase-wise stir DIMAPUR, APR 15 (NPN): With no positive response from state government to its ultimatum, the Nagaland RMSA Teachers Association (NRMSATA) 2016 said they were compelled to boycott three days class from April 17-19 as first phase agitation and continue with poster campaign (phase II) and sit in protest (phase III) until their demands were met. Anguished for misleading with excuses, NRMSATA2016 president Renbemo L Patton and general secretary Kezhothito Keyho said the department had informed them at least four times over a period of five months about their salary being nearly ready to be disbursed, creating a spurious hope for the member to wait only to find in the end, their silence. It said all hopes have run dry and the department’s verbal assurances reduced to good words having no meaning or consequences.
The association has warned the department “not to take the ethical conduct and misinterpret it as a weakness of the association”. It said hardworking teachers had been rewarded with untold hardship, physical exhaustion coupled with financial stress. “Should this trend continue, it would not be long before we take to the streets for bagging for being a sincere teacher,” NRMSATA said. On Service Regularization: NRMSATA reminded the department that as per the guideline/framework of RMSA, all teachers should have to be appointed under State Education department by their respective states on regular basis with same service condition as of the state teachers. NRMSATA said it was a matter of great concern that those appointment made through backdoor and political aid were regularized. However, RMSATA claimed that teachers appointed in
2016 free and fair open competition, fulfilling all prerequisite qualification were deprived of their rights justice by inducting them as purely contractual employees. In this regard, NRMSATA urged the state government to re-examine the matter seriously for Service Regularization of RMSA teachers 2016 at the earliest possible with all fair means. Meanwhile, the association has informed all its members to refrain from joining their duties until further notification. The teachers said that they were ready to face any consequences for what was right and just. The body has also requested all concerned citizens to extend support and co-operation, saying “all these related issues are the root cause of corruption in the society”. It further war ned that NRMSATA would not be held responsible for any unwarranted situation during the course agitations.
India vulnerable to Zika, Ebola; level of preparedness inadequate ‘Level of preparedness is inadequate to protect public health’ NEW DELHI, APR 15(AGENCIES): South Asian nations, including India, are vulnerable to emerging infectious diseases such as Zika and Ebola, and their level of preparedness is inadequate to protect public health, a new health analysis has revealed. An analysis as part of a collection of 12 analyses on health in South Asia published in British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that inadequate surveillance and uneven health system capacity may accelerate the spread of the emerging infectious diseases in the region. The region is already burdened by diseases like tuberculosis, HIV and malaria. “Examining the vulnerability to emerging and growing infectious disease
threats and the capacity to respond to outbreaks, the analysis finds the level of preparedness is inadequate to protect public health,” it said. T h e a n a ly s i s a l s o pointed out that although sporadic cases of dengue infection were seen in many South Asian countries in the 1960s, regular epidemics only occurred in the early 1990s in India and Sri Lanka.
“In India and Sri Lanka, by around 40 years of age 90-95% of adults have been infected with the dengue virus, while 41% have been infected with chikungunya,” the analysis found. It said while noting that anthrax is endemic in large parts of South Asia, that in the border areas of India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, poor vaccination and surveillance have been accompanied by increas-
ing anthrax cases, which prompted Bangladesh to announce a red alert in 2010. Noting that rabies remains endemic in eight countries in South East Asia, with 1.4 billion people at risk, the authors in the analysis said that the region contributes about 45% of global rabies deaths, while the rhetoric on elimination continues to grow. “Brucellosis, bovine tuberculosis, and a range
of food-borne diseases contribute to the morbidity and mortality attributable to zoonotic infections but are struggling to gain the attention of policymakers in the subcontinent, despite it resulting in 150 million illnesses, 175,000 deaths, and 12 million disabilityadjusted life years,” the analysis said. The analysis found that the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus A/ H5N1, which was introduced to the subcontinent in 2005 through wild birds, has since become endemic across large parts of northeast India and Bangladesh, across porous international borders. South Asia is defined by the World Bank as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and is home to a quarter of the world’s population.
(PUCL) through its national secretary, filed for impleadment as petitioners in place of the NMA office bearers. The apex court allowed PUCL petition but subject to the objections and reservation and reply by the respondents. It is to reiterate that this newspaper including other newspapers have been covering the issue both in the assembly and outside since 2005-06 , purely in the interest of providing information to public on the crucial issue of 33% women reservation and the vacillating stand of the government. The issue of 33% women reservation in ULBs in Nagaland in particular, also comes into play with various objections raised by the apex Naga tribe organisations. The issue between the office bearers of NMA and the apex Naga tribes is known to all. Therefore, this newspaper is not accountable for the events that unfolded. It is regretted, that instead of making whatever clarification as the case may be, instead the women leaders chose to shoot the messenger by intimidating the editor and media. If by any report(s) certain people may have been hurt, it was never with any intention but only for the purpose of disseminating news.
