Welcoming the decision, Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya said “in a democratic country there is no room for VIP culture and all are equal before the law and should be treated equally.” He said red beacons had become a “lightning rod for public disgust at official corruption and the VVIP culture”. Acharya said many persons were misusing red lights on their vehicles for committing crimes in different parts of the country. They do so with impunity because police officials are mostly scared of checking vehicles with red lights, he added. “I welcome Prime Minster’s decision. I think it is high time, we need to get out of it”, Governor said and hoped that others would also take similar action. NPN adds: Some legislators have also removed the red beacons from their vehicles. DIMAPUR, APR 21 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K. Therie has criticized the NPF-led government for choosing to remain silent over Centre’s directive to impose Hindi in schools and also on antiChristian actions and persecution across the country. Therie also went on to point out that the people have not heard of any special plan or non-plan assistance from the BJP-led government. As for CSSs funds, he said it was based on matching grant, while NEC and NLCPR are decided by the state priority list and rational allocations made to all NE states. “For a cup of tea or for a position of chair or money, Nagaland cannot bury our inherent unique culture and hard earned history, identity and religious freedoms,” he said. While NPF has been expecting huge funds from

the BJP government, he however said that till date the state had received only the 14th Finance Commission award. In this regard, he called upon every right thinking person and likeminded voter to fight the battle together. “It is only your vote that matters to save Nagaland. Your anger or my anger over imposition of Hindutva bears no meaning. Even if the whole of India accepts Hindutva, Nagaland cannot accept,” he said. He however clarified saying he had no objection/ question against any other fellow citizen for practicing a different faith, “nor expect them to question such means of my people”. He opined that people of Nagaland does not accept the principles and dreams of RSS and BJP, but were “with them expecting money and development.” “What is more important is a future, identity,

freedom and liberty. What if you have everything but lose your identity and freedom of faith?” he questioned. He asserted that Nagaland should reject BJP and advised NPF to seriously reconsider their alliance with BJP if there was any truth in regional identity. While narrating the story of a lady voter who had voted for a candidate at the same time assuring the other candidate that her whole heart was with him, Therie in this regard reminded the voters that “Your heart is with Jesus. Let your vote also be with Jesus.” Pointing out that religious divide was hurting Christians more than any other religion, he recalled how Rajeshwar Singh, leader of RSS backed Hindu outfit DJM, had declared that Christians would be eliminated from India by 2021.

Speaking at the function Dr. Liezietsu recalled that it was exactly one hundred years on April 21, when the first batch of the NLC sailed to France in 1917 to participate in the 1st Great War theatre in Europe. The chief minister wondered what must have gone to the minds of the NLC as they sailed the oceans to distant lands to fight for the Crown. While reiterating that the First World War was certainly neither India’s war nor that of the Nagas, yet the NLC participated with feats of bravery during their battles in Europe and elsewhere.

Liezietsu recalled that around 2000 Nagas were recruited and were designated as NLC and according to some written documents, the NLC arrived in France in two main groups (688 men on 21 June 1917 and 992 men on 2 July 1917). H e s a i d t h e N LC

worked in various places around France on salvage work, road repairs among others and according to accounts, the Nagas (NLA) fearlessly carried out their designated duties despite facing the horrors of war in the battlefield and were at the forefront regardless of

the possibility of death all around them. The chief minister said that after the NLC returned, the building holding the list of Nagas who went to participate in the First World War were destroyed by Japanese bombings. However, he reiterated that the relative lack of historical records should not deter Nagas from commemorating their pioneering ventures which led to the subsequent state of Nagaland. The chief minister said after NLC returned from France, they formed a socio-political association called the Naga Club with branches in Kohima and Mokokchung immediately after their return. Then in 1918 and later in 1929 the Naga Club submitted a representation to the Simon Commission conveying the right of choice of self-determination of the Nagas when the British left India.
