140 Afghan soldiers killed in attack MAZAR-I-SHARIF/KABUL, APR 22 (AGENCIES): At least 140 Afghan soldiers were killed by Taliban attackers apparently disguised in military uniforms, officials said on Saturday, in what would be the deadliest attack ever on an Afghan military base.

One official in the northern city of Mazar-iSharif, where the attack occurred, said on Saturday at least 140 soldiers were killed and many others wounded.

Other officials said the toll was likely to be even higher.

They spoke on the condition of anonymity because the government has yet to release exact casualty figures.

The defense ministry said more than 100 soldiers were killed or wounded.

The attack starkly highlighted the struggle by the Afghan government and its international backers to defeat a Taliban insurgency.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani visited the base on Saturday, and in a statement online, condemned the attack as “cowardly” and the work of “infidels”.

They used rocket-propelled grenades and rifles, and several detonated suicide vests packed with explosive, officials said.

Witnesses described a scene of confusion as soldiers were uncertain who the attackers were.

“It was a chaotic scene and I didn’t know what to do,” said one army officer wounded in the attack. The base is the headquarters for

the Afghan National Army’s 209th Corps, responsible for much of northern Afghanistan, including Kunduz, a province which has seen heavy fighting.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Saturday the attack on the base was retribution for recent killing of several senior Taliban leaders in northern Afghanistan.

On Saturday, the U.S. military command in Kabul said that an American air strike killed a Taliban commander, Quari Tayib, on April 17.

Mujahid said the attack on the base killed as many as 500 soldiers, including

senior commanders.

Four of the attackers were Taliban sympathizers who had infiltrated the army and served for some time, Mujahid said. That has not been confirmed by the Afghan army.

NATO-led military coalition deploys advisers to the base where the attack occurred to train and assist Afghan forces but coalition officials said no foreign troops were hurt or killed.

“The attack on the 209th Corps today shows the barbaric nature of the Taliban,” commander of coalition forces, U.S. General John Nicholson, said in a statement on Friday.

DIMAPUR, APR 22 (NPN): Nagaland government has decided to pay ex gratia of Rs.5 lakh each to the next of kin of the three persons who died in the police firing on January 31, 2017 night at Dimapur and Longleng and Rs. 50,000 to the injured.

This was informed by the Cabinet Sub-Committee (CSC) formed to look into the demands made by Joint Co-ordination Committee (JCC) and Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC) pertaining to ULB election, during a meeting with JCC and NTAC officials here at Hotel Saramati Saturday.

The committee comprising of advisor Urban Development, S.I. Jamir; minister of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Imkong L. Imchen; PHED minister, Chotizo Sazo and minister of National Highway and Political Affairs, Kaito Aye, along with State Home Commissioner, Abhijit Sinha, conveyed the government’s position with regard to the demands.

They informed that the government was “very serious” about the issue and sought cooperation towards finding an amicable solution.

During the meeting, JCC and NTAC reiterated their demands-- suspension of former police commissioner Dimapur and personnel involved both in Dimapur and Longleng, ex gratia for the deceased, revocation of November 24, 2016 NLA resolution and amendment of Nagaland Municipal Act (NMA) and inclusion of another member in the Judicial Inquiry Commission (JIC). JCC and NTAC urged upon the committee to constitute a committee to look into amendment of the NMA. Apart from announcement of the ex gratia payment, no new development took place in the 2-hour long meeting.

The committee, which claimed to represent all 60 MLAs, also assured to extend formal invitation to JCC/NTAC for nomination of a member in the JIC.

DIMAPUR, APR 22 (NPN): National cultural get together organised by National Integrated Forum of Artist and Activities (NIFAA) with Kuyingpong Cultural Society was held on Friday, at town hall, Dimapur with North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC) former director, Lipokmar Tzudir as special guest.

In his speech, Tzudir whole stressing on unity and diversity said that people need to contemplate on diversity as without appreciating and realising the unique practices, different

experiences, customs and traditions of every tribe, traditions, community and region one cannot coexist and progress.

He raised the need for educating oneself about customs, culture and traditions of each community and learning to appreciate it.

While citing the examples various incidents faced by people from north east region in other parts of the country, Tzudir said such incidents occur not because the people were not educated about the north east and its culture and customs.

He also urged the gathering to initiate “national

integration” so that people from the rest of the country would be educated about the northeaster people.

“Take advantage, do not be confined to the state but converge to all Nation and that is the only way we be able to let known about the community of NE state”, said Tzudir.

The special guest also reminded the organisers and the gathering on importance of time management as the programme begun an hour late.

Earlier, NIFAA chairman, Pritpal Singh Pannu briefed the gathering on NIFAA activities, vision and

mission. He said NIFAA was adjudged as best youth organization of the country by ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India and was honoured with national youth award.

Apart from various other national and internal level awards and accolades, he said NIFAA achieved six guinness world records for achievements of social awareness in the field of gender equality, world peace, nuclear weapons free world, AIDS awareness, promotion of Kathak and health.

With branches in 10 states of India and more than 2500 active youth volunteers on role, Pannu said NIFAA team has been consistently marching towards formation of a better society and peaceful world.

He also said that NIFAA hopes to work to create a network to interact with the youths for the cause of the country and the society.

In a short speech national youth awardee, Hitendra Somani, called upon the youths to be the backbone of the society by realizing ones talent and responsibility.

The gathering was also enthralled by the colourful and energetic performance presented by NIFFAA and Kuyingpong Cultural Society.

Addressing the gathering of elders, Zaseyi stressed on the power of prayer and exhorted the elders to continue building close relationship with God, saying “everything is possible through Him.” Elders are the most precious gift and blessing to the village, Zaseyi added.

He later led in the prayer exchange.

officer of Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) Seikhazou Kohima, Dr. Aomeren Longkumer, cautioned that due to lack of physical activity and incorrect food habit, most people were suffering from HBP and diabetics.

Dr. Aomeren disclosed that 50-60% of office goers in Kohima town were overweight which could led to

increase in sugar level and eventually diabetics, if not treated on time. He recommended daily exercise as a preventive measure.

Forest Colony chairman, Ngamyok Konyak and Mewibogei Colony chairman, Pangertoshi Pongen, expressed gratitude to the UPHC team for providing free treatment and free medicine the people, especially those who could not afford to avail such services in hospitals.

Briefing the gathering on the visions of Ramakrishna, Jamir said the latter took the decision to serve the people and added that his mission should be appreciated by everyone.

Besides religion, the

Itanagar, Apr 22 (IANS): The Congress Arunachal Pradesh unit on Saturday described as “immature and uncalled for” Chief Minister Pema Khandu’s statement that the Indian state shares a border with Tibet and not China. “The Chief Minister of a sensitive state like Arunachal Pradesh should not make any statement before going through the political status and history of Tibet, as recognised by the Indian government,” state Congress President Takam Sanjoy said. Sanjoy, a former Lok Sabha member, said Tibet as of today has the status of the ‘Tibetan Autonomous Region of People’s Republic of China’.

On April 14, New Delhi said there is no change in the Indian position that Tibet is a part of China and that it will continue to seek a mutually acceptable solution to the boundary issue.

IMPHAL, Apr 22: Manipur forest authority Saturday denied any instance of killing Royal Bengal Tiger in interior Manipur village bordering Nagaland.

Recently, gory pictures of a slain Royal Bengal Tiger went viral on the social media. The big cat was reportedly hunted by villagers of a Manipur village at the border with Nagaland.

Manipur principal chief conservator of forest P N Prasad has denied the report of killing the big cat in Manipur.

In an interview with a local cable network, Prasad said the photographs of killing of Royal Bengal Tiger, which were uploaded in social media, were the photographs of killing a tiger in Nagaland in 2015.

He said the state forest department was trying to find out the authenticity of the photographs which were shot at three different locations.

Tura, Apr 22: Heavy rains since Friday night have led to flood-like situation in the low-lying areas in Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district, an official said on Saturday.

Shillong, Apr 22: Predicting Meghalaya’s Congress-led government’s downfall, BJP poll strategist Himanta Biswa Sarma has shown confidence that his party will win the people’s mandate in the state in 2018.

Sarma, who is considered the chief architect of BJP’s success in Assam and Manipur, was optimistic that Chief Minister Mukul Sangma will lose in the next assembly elections.

“My own assessment is that the people of Meghalaya will vote for (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi and for development. We will have our own government,” he told journalists on Friday.

“Our idea is to ensure that he and his brother (Sports and Youth Affairs minister Zenith M. Sangma lose in the elections.

Do not be surprised if Sangma loses,” the Sarma, who also holds the Finance portfolio in Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP government, said.

Hinting that the BJP is gearing up to contest in all the 60 assembly seats, Sarma said: “We recognise that Meghalaya has a very unpopular government.

Meghalaya has not seen the kind of development which the people of the state deserve.”

“Therefore, in order to make Meghalaya a frontranking state there should be a government which would be ready to implement Modi’s vision both in letter and spirit.”

“So in order to translate Modi’s vision in Meghalaya, we need a vehicle which will be our own state government which will implement the Prime Minister’s programmes of development for Meghalaya,” Sarma noted.

New UP DGP vows to crackdown on gau rakshak, goondagardi Lu c k n ow, A P R 2 2 (AGENCIES): The new police chief of Uttar Pradesh, Sulkhan Singh, on Saturday vowed to crush “goondagardi” and warned that no one will be allowed to take law in their hands in the name of cow vigilantism or protection from eve-teasing.

“Those indulging in ‘goondagardi’ and criminal activities will be dealt with without mercy. They cannot escape and even VIPs will not be spared,” the 1980batch IPS officer who took over charge of DGP of the State said on Saturday.

“No one has the right to interfere in the name of gau raksha or eve-teasing at public places or any such basis... and if someone does vigilantism, police will take strict action... We ask people to give us information if they come across such things. We will also ensure that we neither ask for their names nor make them public,” he said.

“We will not allow anyone to indulge in forceful behaviour as it leads to hatred in society and it will not be allowed,” Singh said in response to a question.

To a query on antiRomeo squads, Singh said it was not a drive and would continue on a regular basis as policing.

“The policemen deployed in it will be briefed directly by the SPs... they will work undercover to monitor objectionable behaviour in public place... questioning and interrogation is not part of this... the staff will be clearly briefed about what action they have to take,” he said.

Asked about some persons associated with the ruling party allegedly taking the law in their hands, he said, “The CM has clearly instructed that the police should work in an unbiased manner and act against all, be it from ruling party or anyone else, and I want to assure that all those indulging in goonda and criminal activities will be dealt with as per the law.”

Spelling out his priorities as the DGP, he said maximum FIRs would be filed and the police would get full freedom to work without fear or pressure from any quarter.

Singh, who has an image of being an upright officer, said, “My effort will be to ensure unbiased policing and keeping the morale of the force high.”

To another question pertaining to allegations of

rampant corruption in the police machinery, he said, “Fair inquiry will be held in all cases.”

Asked about the sagging morale of the police force in view of over 100 cases of assaults and killings of the men-in-khaki, Singh said it was a contentious issue. “But, definitely if there is any demoralisation in the force, I would address it on top priority,” he said.

State on alert after warning from MP police

Uttar Pradesh police tightened security in all districts on Saturday following intelligence inputs that “anti-national elements” dressed like Hindu saints were planning to carry out “spectacular” attacks at prominent religious sites and public places in the state.

The inputs, provided

by Madhya Pradesh police, said the 17-18 men had been trained by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence in Hindu religious practices and shlokas, and might try to blend into the local populace before carrying out strikes.

“A group of 17-18 antinational elements, trained in Hindu rituals, is planning a spectacular incident at

prominent religious sites and other sensitive spots in the guise of sadhus,” the letter issued by additional director general of MP police read.

The alert comes roughly a month after Hindu hardline leader Yogi Adityanath took over as chief minister of the state, and two days after UP’s anti-terrorist squad busted a suspected terror module along with sleuths from five other states.

New UP director general of police, Sulkhan Singh, who took over on Saturday, said he “won’t be able to comment immediately on a specific issue”. “But, I can assure you that we are capable of neutralising any threat,” Singh told HT. A senior official said police tightened security in crowded places as well as important pilgrimages such as Ayodhya, Mathura and Varanasi. Besides, he said, additional security personnel were deployed at Taj Mahal in Agra, the high court in Allahabad and its Lucknow bench, the assembly and secretariat buildings and other important government offices in Lucknow.

The MP police letter referred to a 2016 incident in which eight suspected members of the banned Students Islamic Movement if India (Simi) had also assumed the guise of Hindus to escape attention. The men were killed after escaping from a jail in Madhya Pradesh last year.

Meanwhile, a Lucknow court allowed eightday police remand of the two suspected terrorists Ahtesham-ul-Haq and Mohammad Faizan to UP’s anti terrorist squad (ATS) .

New Delhi, Apr 22 (IANS): A day ahead of civic elections in Delhi, Swaraj India leader Yogendra Yadav on Saturday accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of betraying the people’s trust and sought his resignation if the AAP fails to win half of the 272 municipal wards.

In a letter to Kejriwal, Yadav said the Chief Minister has turned the Sunday elections to the three municipal corporations into a referendum on his popularity.

“If he loses in this referendum, two years after securing 67 of 70 assembly seats in Delhi, he must not make an excuse about electronic voting machines and resign as Chief Minister if the Aam Aadmi Party did not win 50 per cent of the MC seats. Yadav said the mandate given by Delhi residents to Aam Aadmi Party in the 2015 assembly elections was not because of one leader or one party.

Bengaluru, Apr 22 (IANS): Indian IT companies, which conquered the world with their software skills, don’t steal jobs anywhere in the world but create them, asserted Union IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday.

“Indian IT companies do not steal jobs but create jobs, be it in the US or any other country. We are proud of their contribution in America and the world over,” he said at an interactive meet with leaders of the IT and Electronics System Design Manufacturing industries here.

During a courtesy call on External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Friday, Amarinder Singh had expressed concern over the delay in removing the names of Sikh youths put on the blacklist for alleged involvement in subversive or anti-India activities during and after the Khalistan movement in Punjab during the 80s and 90s.

These youths can’t visit/return to India due to their names being on the blacklist.

Swaraj had assured of taking up the issue with the

Home Ministry which was said to be in the process of gradually pruning the list.

Amarinder Singh also urged the Home Minister to direct the Central Bureau of Investigation and other central agencies to expedite probes into cases of sacrilege and targeted killings in Punjab, the spokesman said.

He sought five additional Border Security Force companies to strengthen security on the India-Pakistan border in Punjab and stressed the need to set up a second line of defence.

BSF deployment needed to be strengthened in Punjab on the pattern of Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister said while citing the fidayeen attacks in Dinanagar in 2015 and the Indian Air Force station in Pathankot in 2016.

The second line of defence was necessitated in Punjab by the fact that its border was vulnerable to terror attacks as also infiltration of terrorists, arms and ammunition, and drugs from across the border in view of heavy security on the international border in Jammu and Kashmir.

Death toll rises to nine in Bengal violence, 6 arrested

Birbhum, Apr 22 (IANS): With two more persons succumbing to their injuries since the late hours on Friday, the toll in the crude bomb explosion in West Bengal’s Birbhum district has risen to nine, police said on Saturday.

“Nine people have died so far in the crude bomb explosion following clashes between two groups in Birbhum district’s Labpur since yesterday (Friday). A few more are critically injured,” Birbhum Superintendent of Police N. Sudheer Kumar told IANS. “After seven people dying till Friday evening, two more have succumbed to their injuries in the hospital,” he said. Six people have been arrested so far while police have registered suo motu cases against several members of the two groups for the violent clashes on Friday.

According to police, the clashes between the two groups were an offshoot of a war for supremacy in the area. “We have started two separate cases since yesterday (Friday), one for the clashes and the other one for making crude bombs. We have arrested six miscreants so far in the first case,” Kumar said. Police claimed some of those involved in making crude bombs died in the accidental explosion. “The people who died in the explosion were involved in making crude bombs. Bomb-making materials like stone chips and explosives have been recovered from some of the deceased’s house,” Kumar said.

urprising political observers, the BJP (a right wing Hindu nationalist party) and the PDP (a pro-separatist Muslim party) entered into a political marriage in 2015 in order to keep others out and then grab power. It was a classic case of permanent interests overriding ideologies that stand poles apart. The opportunistic alliance also disproved the human law that ‘east and west can never meet’. Since coming to power, the PDP has been facing some difficult times whenever there is unrest or protests in the valley. While the PDP does not and cannot afford, to be indifferent to the problem of its constituents such pro-separatist elements; the BJP on the other hand, also cannot be silent to the expectations that it would maintain a rigid stand against anti-India protests and actions. Perhaps for quite some months, the BJP had been trying to manage the situation. However, as the situation in the valley worsens by the week, the BJP and PDP find that they are being driven apart by their ideologies. With the Jammu and Kashmir Government led by Mehbooba Mufti drawing sharp criticism in wake of the recent unrest in the Valley, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ram Madhav held a meeting with Finance Minister and People`s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Haseeb Drabu to discuss the future strategy.

The meeting assumes significance as the BJP is a coalition partner of the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir. The state has seen the rise of a phenomenon called ‘stone pelting’ in recent times. IN particular, the incidents have increased manifold in the region since the BJP-PDP Government came to power in 2015. The centre has taken a stand not to allow stone pelters and anti-India forces take centre stage. That may not be a difficult task but acting on that is itself a herculean task. Thus, while PDP is pulling the other way, the BJP is going the opposite side and this is putting big stress on the string of that binds their alliance. Recently, true to the warning of the chief of the army General Bipin Rawat, that the army will not tolerate any act inimical to the country’s interest and would act with a firm hand. That was in February 2017 and in April, a video showing a Kashmiri tied up to the front of an Army jeep as a shield against stone pelters has kicked up a row. After both PDP and BJP went their separate ways on dealing with such situation, the issue got more pronounced when political parties disapproved of the manner in which the man was tied as a shield. The reaction from the BJP was totally supportive. BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav said the idea of using a Kashmiri man as a human shield against angry stone-pelters a young army officer was the right thing as everything is fair in love and war. Describing Rawat’s comments as “tragic”, National Conference spokesman Junaid Azim Mattu said the government should instead approach and engage with the youth of the militancy-hit Kashmir Valley. Instead of improving the situation as promised, the BJP-PDP marriage has not improved the situation but instead it has worsened and their differences are showing.

When “important” individuals go away we are sad, until we see that they are meant to go, so that only one thing is left for us to do— to look into the face of God for ourselves.

Allow nothing to keep you from looking with strong determination into the face of God regarding yourself and your doctrine. And every time you preach make sure you look God in the face about the message first, then the glory will remain through all of it. A Christian servant is one who perpetually looks into the face of God and then goes forth to talk to others. The ministry of Christ is characterized by an abiding glory of which the servant is totally unaware— “…Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him” (Exodus 34:29).

We are never called on to display our doubts openly or to express the hidden joys and delights of our life with God. The secret of the servant’s life is that he stays in tune with God all the time.

hat is Patient rights?

Patients’ rights emerged from human rights, constitutional rights, civil rights, consumer rights, codes of ethics of medical and nursing profession.

The codes of ethics of medical and nursing profession defines the duties of the doctors and nurses towards the patient. These duties form the basis of patients’ rights.

Similarly, the constitution of India gives certain rights on its citizen, e.g.: Right to Life, Rights against exploitation. All these comprises the rights of a patient legally as a citizen of India.

Everyone one of us must have visited a hospital at least once as a patient seeking treatment or as a visitor/ attendant of a patient.

What was your experience all together from your entry till the exit in the hospital?Earlier,medical professionhas been held with reverence and was considered a noble profession, butat present,it has been commercialized to such an extent that it has been associated with a number of malpractices and negligence over the years. In today’s scenario, healthcare is no more considered as a noble service, but availed like any other consumer services. You pay money and expect to be provided the best care. This may have occurred with the growth of consumerism or increasing awareness of the consumers/patients, resulting in the comfort zone of many healthcare professionals been stretched and the accountability of care and service provided under scrutiny through media, internet information’s, Consumer Protection Act and many more likely to creep up in the coming years of advancement. Unless the public is aware of its rights and makes an individual effort to know their rights, the health care services anywhere else will take its own time to provide a good quality service for the patients.

Some important cases to reflect upon by the patient or consumers of health care services are: • Wrong Diagnosis: The patient was initially diagnosed as having Tuberculosis and treatment was given. However later on the basis of other symptoms it was found that he had Jaundice. Allegation that the hospital and attending doctors were negligent in their treatment and diagnosis. Complaint was held to be maintainable. (1993 Consumer Claims Journal 198).

• Unqualified Nurse: Wrong administration of injection caused paralysis of leg of a child and the nurse who administered the injection was not qualified. Opposite parties directed to pay compensation and treatment expenses. (1999 CCJ 960) Kerala.

• Foreign body left inside after operation of leg which was removed by another doctor. Opposite parties directed to pay Rs. 20,000/- as compensation. (1999 CCJ 99) National Commission.

• May 26, 1995: The case of Indian actress Sridevi’s mother, who was operated on the wrong side of the brain at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, New York USA. • In Florida, February 1995: surgeon mistakenly removed the wrong leg of his patient, 52-yearold Willie King, during an amputation procedure.

This article intention is not to encourage the patients to question the hospital’s treatment but to make them aware of their rights.

Just like a customer should know that while buying any product they should be provided safe/ uncontaminated product with the correct quality, quantity, purityso as to protect the consumer against unfair trade practices; similarly, a patient should know that he/she deserves quality treatment and safe environment free from exploitation and malpractices during their visit to the hospital.

ith the Gover nment of India decision of making Sanskrit a compulsory subject in CBSE affiliated schools one is constrained to ask if this is yet another agenda of the BJP led Centre to spread the‘Hindutva’ ideology.

Taking into account the Centre’s move on observing ‘Good Governance Day’ on Christmas and Digital Day during Good Friday, no matter the nature of intent one is forced to speculate on the rationale behind such an act.

The recent Draft on the NEP by the HRD further accentuates and confirms the fears and doubts of the minority Christian’s and alike To mention a few, the Draft propounds thati) Yoga to be made compulsory and facilities for the same are mandatory for educational institutions to get recognition. ii) Study of Sanskrit and Indian culture to be made mandatory in the curriculum.

The draft also mentions names of Gokhale, Ram Mohan Roy, Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya and Gandhiji who worked for better education but has ignored a) Sir Sayed who founded Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College. b) William Carey who founded the Sirampore University and was the inspiration to Raja Ram MohanRoy. The draft mentions the ancient patriarchal Gurukul system and praises the contributions of male Hindu scholars of the past and of Hindu leaders in modern India.

While a curriculum should reflect the plural culture of India, the Draft clearly shows the opposite- the views and apprehensions of the minority being ignored.

The draft with its emphasis on administration through a hierarchy of offices at state level, district and rural areas aims at establishing a centralized system of education which takes away the freedom and dynamism of church-run institutions and individual schools. The draft talking about introducing the study of Indian Culture- Hindi and Sanskrit being made compulsory is in fact a disguise to introduce subjects of religious significance.

And while various topics and questions might seem like the need of the hour it is worthwhile to take into account that the NEP if and when implemented regardless of Article 371A or not, Nagaland being a part of India, what happens to the rest of the nation invairably effects the posterity in the long run.

At a time when the fabric of the education system is being distorted it is imperative we stand up against the Hindutva based policy of the Modi government lest the future generation blames us for being indifferent, lest democracy becomes an invalid rubber stamp, destroying the Secular entity that makes up for the monicker ‘Unity in Diversity’.

NEW DELHI, APR 22 (PTI): India’s changeover to the goods and services tax (GST) has resonated with the Fed: A research note at the US central bank reckons that the biggest indirect tax reforms since Independence could enhance the country’s gross domestic product by up to 4.2%, or Rs 6.5 lakh crore — a sum greater than the central government’s annual borrowing.

New York, Apr 22 (IANS): Apple has hired Steven Keating, the doctoral student from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who made a 3D printout of his own brain after he was diagnosed with a tumour, a media report said.

According to a report in CNBC on Friday, it is still not known whether Keating is working on one of Apple’s teams dedicated to health care or he has joined another team that can take advantage of his expertise in mechanical engineering.

Keating made headlines in 2015 after revealing the depths of his science experiment to better understand his own tumour.

Keating told Vox that he collected 75 GB of his health information.

Far-left politician Jean-Luc Melenchon said the candidates should not cave in to violence. “As we wait for more definite information, I think we need to attend to our duties as citizens: no panic, we shouldn’t interrupt our democratic process,” Melenchon said.

Vivek Murthy WASHINGTON, APR 22 (PTI): Vivek Murthy, the first Indian-American appointed by the Obama regime as the Surgeon General, has been dismissed by the Trump administration to bring new leadership to the vital public health sector.

Murthy, 39, has been replaced by his deputy, Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams, one of the first nurses to serve as surgeon general.

“Murthy, the leader of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, was asked to resign from his duties as Surgeon General after assisting in a smooth transition into the new Trump administration,” the US Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement yesterday.

“Murthy has been relieved of his duties as Surgeon General and will continue to serve as a member of the Commissioned Corps,” the statement said.

Murthy was confirmed as US Surgeon General in December 2014.

It was not immediately clear why Murthy was relieved from duty, the New York Times said while noting that employees at the Department of Health and Human Services privately expressed surprise at his sudden departure.

Murthy, the 19th Surgeon General and the first Indian American to hold this post said in a Facebook Post that it was an honour and privilege to work for this prestigious position.

COLOGNE (GERMANY), APR 22 (AGENCIES): Divisions among German nationalists erupted Saturday as delegates from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party rejected an appeal by one of their leaders to seek a pragmatic political path instead of turning into a “fundamental opposition” party.

While tensions brewed inside the AfD party convention in the western German city of Cologne, outside the hotel hundreds of left-wing demonstrators tried to block about 600 AfD party members from entering. The delegates needed massive police protection to get into the convention, and protesters injured one police officer Saturday morning while trying to block the hotel.

Authorities had 4,000 police officers on the ground to prevent a violent escalation of anti-populist rallies by an expected 50,000 left-wing protesters.

Speaking before AfD members, nationalist politician Frauke Petry said the party needed to set the course for a “spiritualmoral change” in Germany and the rest of Europe. But a majority of the delegates rejected a vote on the party’s future path that she had suggested.

In comparison, Joerg Meuthen, a more far-right party leader who is one of Petry’s rivals, was cheered strongly when he lashed out at German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her government’s migration policy.

Meuthen said when he’s out in his own city he barely sees Germans out in the streets anymore — only migrants.

PARIS, APR 22 (AGENCIES): The killing of a policeman by a suspected Islamist militant pushed national security to the top of the French political agenda on Friday, two days before the presidential election.

With the first round of voting in the two-stage election taking place on Sunday, far-right nationalist candidate Marine Le Pen promised tougher immigration and border controls to beat “Islamist terrorism” if elected. Centrist Emmanuel Macron, who narrowly leads a tight race ahead of Le Pen, said the solutions were not as simple as she suggested, and that there was “no such thing as zero risk”.

Release dates for ‘Avatar’ sequels confirmed

he release dates for the four forthcoming Avatar sequels have been confirmed.

The long-awaited follow-up to James Cameron’s acclaimed 2009 sci-fi epic has been in the works for some time, with the director

declaring his intention last year to make four sequels to the original film.

nouncement of the projected release schedule for the four sequels. After Cameron previously ruled out 2018 as the arrival date for Avatar 2, that film will instead be released on December 18 2020.

The announcement was made on the Avatar Facebook page, which declared: “Great to be working with the best team in the business! Konta levels GB tie with Romania; Nastase sent off

L o nd o n, A p r 2 2 (Agencies): Romania captain Ilie Nastase was banned from the Fed Cup tie against Britain after an incident that left Johanna Konta in tears and her match suspended.

In Konta’s match against Sorana Cirstea, Nastase was sent off after swearing at the umpire, Konta and her captain Anne Keothavong.

The world number seven lost her serve in the next game and was visibly upset before play was halted for 25 minutes.

The International Tennis Federation is investigating Nastase’s conduct.

The world governing body said it is looking “into this matter as well as previous comments made by Mr Nastase during the week”.

Nastase - a former world number one - had caused controversy in the build-up to the tie after being heard making a derogatory comment about Serena Williams’ unborn child.

The incident that led to him being dismissed on Saturday happened when Cirstea was 2-1 up in the second set of the World Group II play-off tie.

After Konta and Keothavong had complained of calling out from the crowd at 1-1, Nastase was involved in a discussion with officials in which he reportedly used foul and abusive language.

He was sent off the court by referee Andreas Egli and, after initially taking a seat in the stands, was then escorted back to the locker room.

Konta went 3-1 down after her serve was broken in the next game and was in tears before the umpire suspended play.

Romania player Simona Halep spoke to the crowd during the suspension to try to calm the situation down. When play resumed, Konta won five games in a row to win the match 6-2 6-3, levelling the tie at 1-1. “Mr Nastase was asked to leave the court

Aizawl FC inch closer to I-League title

Aizawl, Apr 22 (PTI): Unheralded Mizoram side Aizawl FC beat Indian football giants Mohun Bagan by a solitary goal in a highly anticipated match to be within touching distance of their maiden ILeague title in Aizawl on Saturday.

Local player Zohmingliana Ralte scored the all-important goal at the 83rd minute in the penultimate round match in front of football crazy Aizawl fans at the packed Rajiv Gandhi Stadium and steered the team to the verge of creating history.

This stunning win put Aizawl on 36 points from 17 games, three more than Mohun Bagan (33 points from 17 matches), and

now they need just a draw in their final league match against Shillong Lajong away from home on 30 April to bag the coveted I-League crown in their second season.

Mohun Bagan, who won their first I-League title two season’s back, can still be the champions if they beat Chennai City FC at home in their final match on 30 April and Aizawl lose to Shillong Lajong, the same day.

It was a remarkable turnaround for Aizawl FC, coached by Khalid Jamil, who finished eighth in their debut season last year and were almost kicked out of the I-League.

Lo n d o n, A p r 2 2 (Agencies): Second half goals from Lazar Markovic and Sam Clucas gave 10man Hull City a priceless 2-0 win over Watford at the KCOM Stadium.

The Tigers knew they needed nothing less than victory at home to opponents with little to play for this season but their task got much harder when Oumar Niasse was dismissed for a challenge on M’Baye Niang midway through the first half. Dimapur, Apr 22 (NPN): Into the fifth day of the coveted Frolic Club 2017, played on knockout basis, four teams deftly dribbled their way into the next round scheduled in the coming week.

In the first match on Saturday, a staunch MVYO hit the goal net of Blue Boys 4-0 and booked a berth for themselves in the quarters.

The second match saw Tsiepama Youth Organisation lock horns with FC Simlai, Sirhima, where Tsiepama Youth Organisation made a clean sweep with a score of 5-0.

The third match had Milcom FC and Winfield, Medziphema, on

the ground which became more of a one-sided affair and Windfield thrashed Milcom FC 7-0.

The last match of the day saw Recreer FC and Young Generation FC in battle, where the later ousted the former, 3-1.

Monte Carlo, Apr 22 (Agencies): Rafael Nadal beat David Goffin 6-3, 6-1 on Saturday in a controversial semifinal at the Monte Carlo Masters to put himself on the brink of a 10th title at the clay court showpiece.

Ramos-Vinolas, who defeated Lucas Pouille 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, in Sunday’s final.

Nadal is also chasing his first ATP title since last April in Barcelona and the 70th of his career.

However, Saturday’s semifinal turned on a controversial incident in the first set, when the chair umpire may have missed a ball mark and ended up awarding Nadal a point which denied Goffin a 4-2 lead in the opener.

The crowd tur ning against him, Nadal was the subject of whistles and jeers while the heart went out of Goffin who had made the semifinals by seeing off world No 2 Novak Djokovic on Friday.

Ramos-Vinolas, the

29-year-old 15th seed who had knocked out No 1 Andy Murray and Marin Cilic, had never before even reached a Masters 1000 semifinal.

“To play Rafa, you never know. If he plays unbelievable, he’s going to beat you,” Ramos-Vinolas said.

“I have more confidence. It’s impossible to negate that.

Since Roland Garros (2016) maybe, I’m playing better. In South America (February) I did a final, two semifinals, one quarterfinal.

“The results are going better.”

The Spaniard, who saved seven of nine break points, had come to the principality with only three previous victories from 29 matches against top 10 opponents.
