NSCN (I-M), AR stand-off in Ukhrul dist ment when peace talks have reached the closing stages. Meanwhile, NSCN (I-M) claimed that two choppers of Indian Army dropped 32 para commandos “for action” at Sihai village. The group also alleged that the Assam Rifles were preparing for a “showdown anytime” and ready to flush out NSCN (I-M) cadres.

DIMAPUR, Apr 29 (NPN): Amidst apprehensions that the stand-off between security forces and NSCN (I-M) cadres at Sihai village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district could lead to an unwanted situation, NSCN (I-M) said it has alerted all its cadres in designated camps. This was stated by NSCN (I-M) member of CFMC Kraibo Chawang to media persons after attending a meeting of the Ceasefire Review Committee meeting at Cease-Fire Monitoring Cell (CFMC) office at Diphupar on Monday. Chawang said “we have alerted all our designated camps should anything happen in Sihai” and that the NSCN (I-M) was ready to face any eventuality. Kraibo also warned that if anything went wrong, then the government of India would be held solely responsible. He also disclosed that the CFMC had requested the Ceasefire

Monitoring Group chairman to allow NSCN(I-M) cadres to return to Khangkui Shiroy camp (which was allotted as a designated camp in 2007 before being evacuated in 2009), if the cadres have to abandon the Sihai camp. “Otherwise where will our boys go?” he asked. Chawang claimed that NSCN (I-M) cadres have been displaced as camps like the Khangkhui Shiroy forest designated camp and camps at Chatric and Grihang that were established with mutual understating in 2010, were vacated recently. He said NSCN (I-M) had vacated these camps as it did not want any confrontation and bloodshed. Chawang said NSCN (I-M) was earnest in its search for peace but instead, the Centre was creating problems taking advantage of AFSPA. He said: “The problem is from their side and Nagas are the victims.” Chawang also accused the Centre of not keeping its commit-

Since any confrontation and blood bath would derail the ongoing peace process, NSCN (I-M) said Tangkhul organisations were going to proceed to Sihai village on Tuesday to negotiate with Assam Rifles to prevent bloodshed. NSCN (I-M) claimed that Assam Rifles troops moved into the village on April 25.

AR accuses NSCN (I-M) of violating CFGR DIMAPUR, APR 29 (NPN): Assam Rifles (AR) has accused NSCN (I-M) of violating ceasefire ground rules (CFGR) by erecting camps in Sihai Khunou/Khamasom area of Ukhrul in Manipur. In a statement, defence PRO Col. C. Konwer claimed that during a routine aerial reconnaissance on April 25, some suspected temporary hutment-type structures were observed in the forest in the area. Troops deployed to verify thereafter confirmed the existence of an “unauthorised camp of NSCN (I-M)” in the area, he added. AR sector commander then requested villagers and pastor to inform NSCN (I-M) cadres to vacate the camp immediately, saying it was an unauthorised camp and in violation of existing CFGR. The same day, PRO said United Naga Council (UNC) general secretary called up the AR sector commander and confirmed the presence of NSCN (I-M) camp in the area.

PRO said that the Ceasefire Monitoring Group (CFMG) chairman was also briefed about the prevailing situation in the area by IGAR on April 26 evening. It was confirmed by CFMG chairman around 2.15 p.m. the following day that instructions were given to NSCN (I-M) to vacate the camp. Accordingly, AR troops contacted the villagers to confirm the development, while the area was reinforced by additional troops and the unauthorised camp under constant surveillance by air and other means, he added. Mentioning that aerial reconnaissance in the morning on April 27 revealed that the camp has not been vacated, PRO said the onus for causing inconvenience to villagers is now entirely due to the “irresponsible action” by NSCN (I-M) cadres. He claimed that security forces have shown great restraint. (Cont’d on p-7)

Cong moves SC as EC ‘fails to act’ against PM, Shah NEW DELHI, APR 29 (IANS): Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear on Tuesday a Congress petition that claimed that the Election Commission had refused to act on a complaint against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah for making “hate speeches” and “using” armed forces for “political propaganda” during the Lok Sabha polls. The Congress alleged that EC’s “silence” was an indirect endorsement of the violation of the Model Code of Conduct. A bench, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, agreed to hear the petition on Tuesday after it was mentioned as “urgent” by senior advocate A.M. Singhvi and advocate Sunil Fernandes. Singhvi, while making oral mentioning of the petition before the bench, did not take names of the PM and Amit Shah. The bench said: “Why don’t you clearly take the names? We will hear you last. You should stop this game of hide and seek.” The bench took note of the petition by Singhvi and asked him why he is hesitating to take names of the BJP leaders. The bench

then asked the counsel to say “whatever he wanted to”. The 146-page petition was filed by Sushmita Dev, Congress candidate from Assam’s Silchar Lok Sabha constituency. In the petition, the Congress alleged that the rules and regulations inscribed in the Model Code of Conduct were not meant for the Prime Minister and his party President but applicable only on other candidates. “It is in public domain that they have indulged in hate speeches, repeatedly used the armed forces for political propaganda, despite a clear prohibition on the same by the EC,” said the petition. The petition said the delay of more than 3 weeks in decision-making or the absence of a decision were, in fact, decisions in themselves. Congress said 40 representations on violation of the Model Code of Conduct were brought to the notice of the EC so far, but it did not lead to any action. The petition alleged that since March 10, after the notification for the elections was issued, Modi and Shah had “violated” the provisions of the Representation of the People Act and election rules.

LF takes out rallies demanding fresh poll in West Tripura

Assam govt to increase number of Foreigners’ Tribunals to 1,000

Agartala, Apr 29 (PTI): The opposition Left Front (LF) in Tripura Monday took out protest rallies in different parts of the West Tripura constituency demanding that the EC orders fresh election in the Lok Sabha seat. LF alleged that large scale rigging and violence took place during the April 11 election in the West Tripura constituency. “We are organising protest rallies, in different parts of West Tripura constituency areas ... But this is not our protest and struggle alone. It is a struggle of all peace loving, democratic citizens whose democratic rights were snatched by large scale rigging”, Left Front convener Bijan Dhar told a gathering here. Dhar alleged that the BJP-IPFT government in Tripura was “responsible” for overall breakdown of law and order which led to massive rigging on the poll day on April 11. He said that when a CPI(M) delegation met EC in Delhi before the elections, the EC had assured to take all measures for free and fair elections, but they “failed to fulfil their promises.”

GUWAHATI, Apr 29 (Agencies): The Assam Government has decided to increase the number of Foreigners’ Tribunals under the provisions of the Foreigners Act to 1,000 in phased manner to expedite the cases relating to suspected foreign nationals, Assam Tribune reported. Meanwhile, the Government will file a fresh affidavit in the Supreme Court on its plan to deal with the suspected foreigners lodged in the detention centres. Highly placed official sources told The Assam Tribune that at present, one hundred Foreigners Tribunals are functioning in the State, but that is not adequate to deal with the cases and around two lakh cases are pending before the Tribunals. Moreover, after the publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), the persons, whose names will not appear in it will have the right to appeal before the Tribunals, which will add extra burden. If the number of Tribunals is not increased, it will take years to dispose of

Tourists turn Bogibeel Bridge into plastic waste dumping ground. (Northeast Now)

D I B RU G A R H , A p r 29 (Agencies): Four months after the inauguration of Bogibeel Bridge by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the place is littered by plastic bottles and plastic packets. Bogibeel Bridge has become a tourist destination after it’s inauguration on December 25 last year by Prime Minister Modi. Visitors from different areas come to see the longest rail cum road bridge of India and dump plastic bottles and plastic packets on the bridge. “The visitors dump plastic bottles and chips packets on the bridge. They should know the basic civic sense but it is seen that people are not aware of the civic sense. We are very much hurt when we see plastic bottles and chips packets littered around Bogibeel Bridge. Lots of sentiK Y M C

ments are attached with the Bogibeel Bridge because it is the lifeline for the people of north and south bank,” Ranjit Baruah, a resident of Dibrugarh said. After the inauguration of Bogibeel Bridge, the rush of tourist has increased and often tourists are seen taking selfies on the Bogibeel Bridge. Bogibeel Bridge is the fifth bridge over the Brahmaputra, linking Dhemaji and Dibrugarh district of Upper Assam. “I’ve seen that children come with chips packet with their parents to see the bridge after that they throw the packets on the bridge. The parents don’t say anything to them. The parents should teach them not to throw chips packets and plastic bottles on the bridge but most of the times they didn’t say anything,” Nobinita Sharma a school

teacher said. “Due to lack of awareness, people are throwing plastic bottles on the bridge but this should be stopped. The district administration should take necessary action against such people. Bogibeel Bridge is a national project and our sentiment is attached with the bridge. Our main concern is to keep the bridge clean,” said Lankeswar Deori, a resident of Dibrugarh. Recently, some organisations took a cleanliness drive at Bogibeel Bridge and collected many plastic bottles. A Dibrugarh based entrepreneur took out the cleanliness drive. He was seen cleaning the paan stains and picking up the trashes which were dumped on the bridge. major issue. If required, the Government is also planning to bring in qualified persons from other parts of the country to be appointed as members of Tribunals, sources revealed. Sources admitted that in a large number of cases, persons who were declared as foreigners by the Tribunals are reported missing and to deal with the issue, a process of taking biometrics and photographs of the persons against whom cases have been referred to the Tribunals, has started. This will not permanently solve the problem, but it will definitely help in finding such persons, sources added. At present, around 90,000 persons declared as foreigners by the Tribunals, are reported missing. It may be mentioned here that the Supreme Court recently strongly criticized the State Government for its affidavit, in which it proposed to release the foreigners who spent more than five years in the detention centres after obtaining their biometrics and a bond.

The State Government sought approval of the Centre for increasing the number of Tribunals and recently, the required approval has been received, sources added. Sources admitted that it would not be possible to create 900 more Tribunals at one go and that is why, the plan is to increase the number in phased manner. In the first phase, 200 new tribunals are planned to be established. However, creation of infrastructure will take some time and finding adequate number of qualified persons to be appointed as members may also turn out to be a problem. Guwahati, Apr 29 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Monday directed the railway authorities to complete the repairing work of the old Saraighat bridge over river Brahmaputra in Guwahati within June 20. Sonowal visited the work site and told the railway authorities to engage manpower in three shifts and complete casting work of the bridge within May 15. “The Saraighat bridge is a lifeline in terms of connectivity for the people of north and south bank of river Brahmaputra”. “It is very important to complete the repairing work at the earliest to ensure hassle free traffic movement for the people on both banks of the river,” Sonowal told to the railway officials at the site. Sonowal fur ther directed that the repair works of the bridge be completed within June 20 instead of June 30 as fixed earlier by the railways and also to finish casting of the bridge within May 15 so that it could be reopened for vehicular movement on June 20. Further, considering the amount of repair work to be executed, Sonowal advised the railways to engage manpower in three shifts ensuring round the clock work instead of the

southeast Bay of Bengal and is likely to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday. Agricultural officials in Assam, Mizoram and Tripura said various summer crops would be affected due to the deficit pre-monsoon rainfall. “If the rain does not occur in the next few days, the damage to the summer crops would be much larger,” agricultural expert Samar Mitra told IANS. The deficit in rainfall also resulted in water scarcity, including supply of drinking water. Tr i p u r a D r i n k i n g Water and Sanitation Department Chief Engineer Baishapayan Chakraborty said the department had been providing drinking water through tankers in the scarcity-prone areas as well as remote, isolated hamlets and tribal areas.

N-F Railway general manager Sanjive Roy informed the chief minister that it is for the first time a major repair of this scale has been taken up since the time of dedication of the bridge to the service of the people in 1963. The railway officials assured the chief minister that the repair work would be completed within June 20 as directed by him. Saraighat bridge is the first rail-cum-road bridge constructed over Brahmaputra river in Assam and it was built by NFR. A parallel new three-lane Saraighat bridge was inaugurated in 2017.

The top court also stated that the NRC staff shall be subjected to the administrative control of the registrar general of India and the state coordinator of NRC, Prateek Hajela. There was an interaction session where the parents of the tobacco used children raised various sensitive questions and urge to take tobacco control measures, especially to protect their young children from tobacco menace, the press communiqué further said. Crash landings

nother bird bites the dust when Jet Airways, the country’s second largest airlines flew its last flight on April 17. The halt in operations of the airlines that had a meteoric rise also brings its founder and billionaire Naresh Goyal to join the company of Kingfisher founder Vijay Mallya. Both entrepreneurs are today known as Kings of Bad Times because their airlines have gone bankrupt and in deep debts. The future of Jet Airways remains unclear as of now as it is debt-laden with thousands of crores of owed and lenders expressing reluctance in offering short-term bailout measures despite PM Modi calling for the same. The crash became a reality when founder Naresh Goyal and his wife Anita Goyal stepped down from the board of directors. Jet owes lessors Rs 8414 crores and currently has a negative net worth of Rs 7242 crores. The airlines hasn’t been paying salaries of its employees for months. Due to the severe cash crunch, Jet has been defaulting on salaries for senior management, pilots and engineers since August 2018. This has led to some 150 senior commanders and 110 commanders and co-pilots opting to move out to join other airlines and spelling the doom of the debt-laden airlines. But Jet wasn’t always in such bad shape. Jet Airways saw its fortunes rise steadily during the UPA regime when it became known as the market leader and was also touted to be the undisputed king of aviation. According to media reports then, this had to do to do with former civil aviation minister Praful Patel’s backing. In fact, allegations against Patel was also captured in the infamous Radia tapes where former JD(U) Rajya Sabha MP called Patel ‘a Minister For Naresh Goyal’. Published by the Outlook magazine, the purported conversation between lobbyist Niira Radia and Singh was scathing on Patel. It was also reported that during Patel’s tenure as Civil Aviation Minister, the national domestic carrier –then Indian Airlines- which was the market leader with 42% share went down to be No.5 behind Jet Airways, Kingfishers, IndiGo and SpiceJet. According to India Today, Air India also saw its fate sealed when in 2004, a board meeting chaired by Patel suddenly inflated the order of new aircraft from 28 to 68 without revenue plan or even routemap for deploying such a huge number of aircraft. The favoured private airlines- Jet Airways lived up to the saying “the higher you go the harder you fall.” With around 20,000 employees now left in the lurch and financial lenders quite unwilling to infuse capital for an airlines company which has crash landed, the future seems bleak at this stage for Jet Airways, which enjoyed patronage during the UPA regime. The government has to set its mind in probing the issue of how Air India was sacrificed to benefit private players so that remedial measures are taken. Also, the government has to probe the causes and factors on why private airlines- Kingfisher and Jet Airways- have crash landed and leaving thousands of employees who have not been paid salaries for months without any hope. India’s civil aviation laws need to be revisited to curb the unchecked powers of mantris and their babus from destroying India’s aviation industry.

DailyDevotion Gracious Uncertainty …it has not yet been revealed what we shall be… —1 John 3:2 Our natural inclination is to be so precise– trying always to forecast accurately what will happen next– that we look upon uncertainty as a bad thing. We think that we must reach some predetermined goal, but that is not the nature of the spiritual life. The nature of the spiritual life is that we are certain in our uncertainty. Consequently, we do not put down roots. Our common sense says, “Well, what if I were in that circumstance?” We cannot presume to see ourselves in any circumstance in which we have never been. Certainty is the mark of the commonsense life– gracious uncertainty is the mark of the spiritual life. To be certain of God means that we are uncertain in all our ways, not knowing what tomorrow may bring. This is generally expressed with a sigh of sadness, but it should be an expression of breathless expectation. We are uncertain of the next step, but we are certain of God. As soon as we abandon ourselves to God and do the task He has placed closest to us, He begins to fill our lives with surprises. When we become simply a promoter or a defender of a particular belief, something within us dies. That is not believing God– it is only believing our belief about Him. Jesus said, “…unless you…become as little children…” (Matthew 18:3). The spiritual life is the life of a child. We are not uncertain of God, just uncertain of what He is going to do next. If our certainty is only in our beliefs, we develop a sense of self-righteousness, become overly critical, and are limited by the view that our beliefs are complete and settled. But when we have the right relationship with God, life is full of spontaneous, joyful uncertainty and expectancy. Jesus said, “…believe also in Me” (John 14:1), not, “Believe certain things about Me”. Leave everything to Him and it will be gloriously and graciously uncertain how He will come in– but you can be certain that He will come. Remain faithful to Him.

hat is the difference between you and an ant? From war making to making slaves, from inventing medicines to farming, they do it much like humans, only better. * In every dense community, human, mammal or insect, sanitation is a problem. Of all the creatures that inhabit the earth, man is probably the dirtiest, spreading his poisonous faeces everywhere and caring little about its pollutive effects. Lasius niger ants live in nests and they use the corner of their nests as common toilets, according to the journal PLOS ONE by the University of Regensburg, Germany. Ants normally keep a very clean nest, and usually throw out dangerous rubbish, like food remains and dead bodies. This piled-up dry waste is kept for defence, as building materials, and as manure for their crops. * Lasius neglectus workers tear apart and spray acid on pupae in order to disinfect the nest. If pupae are found to carry an ant killing fungus in their bodies they are killed and eviscerated . How do they know which juveniles to kill, while the fungal infection was still in its incubation period before it had become visible or contagious? Believe it or not, according to researchers from the

Institute of Science and Technology, Austria, the pupa itself communicates a find me/eat me signal, the ultimate altruistic act to save the colony. * Diseases can spread quickly among dense populations of organisms, whether they’re people living in crowded cities or groups of social insects such as ant colonies. When humans are infected with a pathogen, the immune system churns out proteins, called antibodies, that rally to the body’s defence. Some ant species use antimicrobials — chemical compounds that kill pathogens — to stop disease, according to a study at North Carolina State University published in RSOS. These antimicrobial compounds are applied by the ants to their own bodies, to those of their nest mates, and to their nests. These compounds may be acquired from antimicrobial bacteria; for example, leafcutter ants cultivate bacteria on their bodies that protect them against infection from parasites that feed on the fungus they grow as food. Other ant species harvest the ingredients from tree resin. These microbials are shared among the colony. * Ants have all kinds of different weapons. Often, ants will cooperate to pin down members of

Much like humans the other colonies, or cut them to pieces while the enemy is being held down. Ants are really quite nasty. Other ants have glands in the head, or abdomen, that exude toxic chemicals to confuse their enemies. Their tactics range from physical fighting to chemical warfare, just like it does in humans. Their wars are large scale, intense, tactical. Mark Moffett’s book, Adventures Among Ants, documents barbaric and bizarre combat strategies – the same as human ones. 130 army ant species operate like Roman armies. Moving as a massive, united front, they depend entirely on the element of surprise to overwhelm the enemy. Once the food in the new territory has been eaten the army moves on. As in human armies, which place the young and inexperienced as foot soldiers or infantry in front, ants also assign the smallest, weakest, older ants and the cripples on the

front lines. In effect, the expendables. The actual fighters are behind the lines waiting for the enemy to get tired and reduce in ranks while fighting the cheap labour. Then the large sized, mega-jawed killers move in and bite the enemy to death. And, while ants will readily die for their community, they’re also pragmatic. “An ant would never go out of its way to save another ant,” Moffett says. “They go in to get the job done, not take care of one another.” * Slave-maker ants attack other ant colonies, captures their eggs and larvae, bring them back to their own nests and raise them as slaves to increase the worker force of their colony. After emerging in the slave-maker nest, slave workers work as if they were in their own colony, while the slavemakers only concentrate on replenishing the labour force from neighbouring nests. A colony may capture 14,000 pupae in

T

he bridge goes across the river Brahmaputra. Yes, it’s at Saraighat, one could stop awhile and it’s possible to have a bird’seye view over the island. It is Majali (middle size), another remote and remarkable inhabited River Island. Stopovers at chapari (island) during winter were exquisitely beautiful childhood memories as we grew up. Plucking seeds of Pea from uncle’s farm were ecstatic reminiscence. It’s as unknown and yet well known for vegetables and this tiny chapari has always been a lifeline for localities. However the written name is Rani Chapari (high land form by river sand for temporary cultivation), that encompass an area of about 5,000 hectares extending 6 km. About 3,000 people from nearby villages are dependent on agricultural activities in a land mass in the midst of the river. This fertile land does not have a permanent bank line but the impact of it on the socio economic life of those graziers is enormous. The farmers go across the river during a day. Drinking water is a scarcity. Also it is often a risk by rowing half a kilometre on unsafe country boat. Some have makeshift agricultural dwelling in high land areas. Agriculturalists live with snakes, lizards, crocodiles, turtles and tortoises. There were instance of threats to snakes at farming. Myths and tales are retracted and retold over the origin of a festival. Farmers started offering Puja to Maa Manasa (Serpent God) since 1959. The island gets submerged and faced mayhem in rainy season. Farmers desert the island during flood and erosion. Late 60s the Puja was finally moved out to the current location of Rani Chapari Shree Shree Manasa Mandir at Bhattapara-Garal (Dharapur-Palasbari Road). Rani Chapari has also its own historical evidence. Rani was an independent territory during pre-British time stretching Jalukbari to Palashbari and from Rani Chapari to Khasi/Garo hills. These people originally from Yunnan province (ChinaMyanmar) might have crossed the Patkai Hills and reached the Brahmaputra valley. The Mong Mao prince Chao-lung Sukaphaa settled his journey

with about 9000 followers at Sibasagar. Another group might have settled in undivided Assam-Meghalaya. Since our forefathers names were like Chathura-Mathura (thura means brave, gallant in Burma), Naomon (mong mao prince Chao-lung Sukaphaa), Sansing (Aung San – Burmese leader). Ahom King Gadadhar Singha made a Garo queen of the state Rani. The queen helped him during political disputes among Ahom royal families. Patgaon was the capital then. During British rule, Rani was divided into three mouzas viz Dakhin Rani, Chayani and Ramsarani for collection of tax. Dhopartal haat at near the bank of the river Dharapur was the marketing hub for its produces (mostly vegetables). The frequent flood have significantly caused the cultivate land unusable with loss of human and animal life to this chapari. Thousands of families are living in poverty despite being surplus production. Produces are sold at throw away price. MSP and facilities of cold storage are a mirage for those sons of the soil. The island has no access to electricity and water. The advent of mechanised agriculture, agricultural machinery is an indispensable part and people desire power tools to tractor to carry out agricultural production with better connectivity from the mainland. However migrant labours from Dhuburi are put to work in the field. Rani Chapari Manasa Puja completed 60 years and is celebrating Diamond Jubilee. It’s being observed on Naag Panchami (fifth day of bright half of lunar month of Shravan) day. Owing to flood season, people celebrate puja in April-May with great enthuses. It’s being worshiped for the prevention and cure of snakebite and also for fertility and prosperity. Oja-pali, a musical folk theatre consisting of one Oja, one daina (right side) pali and three/ four palies playing cymbal is believed to be one of the oldest performance art forms of Assam. The stories of Padma Purana, the serpent goddess of Manasa are recited during puja. It believed that Shankardeva took the inspiration from Ojapali to create his

Ankiya Bhaona. Also beating on big drum by a short and flabby person rhythm with big cymbals is indeed a joy to watch. The temple has attracted the wrath of people for patronizing animal sacrifice. But it’s a debate to live up to that expectation as there is Section 428 (killing or maiming animal) in the IPC. But prevention of cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 does not prohibit animal sacrifice at religious places. The God-fearing people are deeply religious and moralistic and still have faith to supernatural beings of Snake God in this age. There’re narratives of shocking snake bite survival tales that happened in the past. The myth is widely believed by the entire community. The recital of Chando Sadagar and Beola-Lakhinder (historical Mer Ghar at Chandika near Chaygoan) were traditional concerning the early history of social phenomenon. This year, Puja is being celebrated on 24-28 April. The Mandir has remained an important role in keeping the people united. However, snakes are still feared by most and they are not always appreciated. But snakes form a key link in the food chain. They help maintain a healthy ecosystem and environment. Amphibians (frog) eat pest insects, benefiting successful agriculture around the world and minimizing the spread of diseases, including malaria. Frogs are also an important food source for birds and snake species. Thus it helps the ecological balance in nature. Interestingly, snakes don’t just act as predators. Lizards, dogs, cats, bird species (herons and raptors) feed on snakes. We need a healthy ecosystem and environment for our world to be functional. And by religious preaching, people unknowingly support this really amazing and simply awesome species for conserving incredible wildlife. When river water recedes, young entrepreneurs got inspired to discover those stranded/uninhabited islands into a River land Tourism. Despite all a harmonious coexistence is doable between farmer and serpent at RaniChapari. Kamal Baruah, (kamal.baruah@yahoo.com)

a single season. Most slave-raiders capture only the young, but Strongylognathus ants also enslave adult workers. Workers that emerge from eggs in the slavemakers’ nest will rear the brood, feed and groom the workers, defend the nest against aliens, and even participate in raids, including those against their original colony. In some cases, the enslaved ants rebel against their slave-maker ants, killing a large number of the slave-maker ant offspring. Thus, the slave ants protect their native colonies from further raids by slave-maker ants. * Unlike in other ant colonies, all dinosaur ants are able to reproduce. However, there’s still a single queen, surrounded by beta females. If any of the queen’s servants becomes greedy for power and decides to lay eggs and be the new queen, it’s subdued by the rest of the courtiers and pinned to the ground for up to four days until the urge subsides. * Dracula ants are the fastest animals on earth. One species, Mystrium camillae, has a pair of mandibles that snap at 90 metres a second or 320 kilometres an hour, according to a study in Royal Society of Open Science. That’s 5,000 times faster than you can blink

your eye and 1,000 times faster than you can snap your fingers. Their name derives from their cannibalistic feeding habits, As adult ants are unable to process solid food, they feed prey like paralysed termites or centipedes to their larvae and then chew holes in their larvae and drink their blood. * We av e r a n t s , Oecophylla smaragdina, build homes out of tree leaves. Their larvae produce a thin silk which acts as the glue that sticks the leaves together. * Allomer us decemarticulatus ants of South America make tiny holes in a plant stem, hide and cover themselves with a fungus they produce themselves. When an unsuspecting insect lands on a stem full of those trap holes, the ants jump up and catch it with their mandibles. Then, they slowly drag the captive to a leaf pouch and tear it apart. * Leafcutter ants are fulltime farmers. They cut out fresh leaves with their sharp mandibles and bring them to their nests to feed a particular type of bacteria that lives with the ants. That bacteria develops into fungi to become the food source for the ants. To join the animal welfare movement contact gandhim@nic.in, www.peopleforanimalsindia.org

The Smoker

t was a hot summer season in the year of 2012. I was in my office, busy disposing of some files. Then, I felt the need for eating something to quell the hunger which had been at work for some time in the inner bowels of my abdomen. Obviously, there was reason for feeling hungry. I had not taken my breakfast as I had to leave home a bit early. I felt summoning the peon to buy something but I myself preferred to go down to have snacks from the ground floor where different kinds of stalls were working 24 hours a day. Ours is a major bus station in the state, and so, foods would be available at all time. As it was well past 11.am, I decided to have brunch. As soon as I reached downstairs, I was accosted by a foreigner. Instantly, I could remember him. His name was Collin Frey from Dover in England. He came to my office the previous day for claiming his digital camera which he had lost during his journey in a KSRTC bus. Fortunately, the conductor had found the camera inside the bus itself, and so he had entrusted it with the office of the KSRTC. Next morning, Collin came to the office inquiring about the camera, and as it had been entrusted with the office, there were some formalities to be completed by him to retrieve his lost property. As he was in a helpless situation, I helped him as much as possible. So Collin recalled me the moment he saw me. The young chap was on the last leg of his itinerary in Kerala. He had been waiting for the Munnar bound bus at the station. Still, some 30 minutes left for the bus to arrive. In fact, it was at this time I was passing by him. Then, we exchanged pleasantries and talked

about his journey. In the meanwhile, he took out a pouch from his rucksack and a rectangular white paper as much as the size of rolling paper of tobacco of a cigarette from his pocket. Out of curiosity, I was watching all this without blinking my eyes. He was preparing a cigarette for himself. The tobacco he used was a finer one from Switzerland. Breaking the silence that prevailed for some time I said, “So you’re a smoker.” “You want to smoke one?” he asked extending the tobacco pouch and the paper to me. “Thanks. But I don’t smoke.” I replied. Now I wanted to tell the bad effects of tobacco use though I might not wean Collin away from it. Still, in a polite way I said, “Will you be offended if I ask you not to smoke.” I showed him the warning on the pouch of tobacco corroborating my view. Paying scant attention to what I said, he smoked deeply pumping the whole burnt tobacco smoke in to every cell of his chest. A sense of complacency could be seen on his face. “Do you booze?” Collin asked looking at me intently. “No. I’m absolutely a teetotaler.” “Then, what else do you do for enjoyment?” he quipped. Not being baffled at the witty question, I sincerely told him that my enjoyment and passion was Jesus Christ. The mission of every Christian is to make known and preach the Kingdom of God. So, I wanted to preach about Jesus Christ who died for every one of us on the cross for our sins. But at this very moment, the Munnar bound bus arrived, and Collin rushed to the bus saying goodbye. Note on ‘The Naga Saga’ Sir,

I have read your book “The Naga Saga” and at the completion of the book, I have mixed feelings. Your philosophical presentation is great and your narrations have great sense of bringing back the glory and agony days of the past. But what I noticed is, in such a high profile book, you lack inclusiveness or may be proper research. Your way of mentioning names, incidents and instances are too limited to your own clan, village and region! I believe absence of atrocity reports or intentional limitation shouldn’t project one suffer less but pray that you will be more inclusive in the new editions. KUKNALIM. Modi’s remark on TMC MLAs spark row

Sreerampur (WB)/ Ko l k ata , A p r 2 9 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday sparked off a major row in West Bengal with his warning to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that her MLAs will abandon her after the results of the Lok Sabha polls come out and 40 of them were already in touch with him. Re a c t i n g a n g r i ly, the Trinamool Congress charged him with horsetrading, but BJP leaders backed Modi’s statement, saying the state’s ruling party would collapse once the results of the sevenphase polls are declared. “When the lotus will bloom all over Bengal after May 23, Didi (Banerjee), you will see that your MLAs will also abandon you and run away. Forty of your MLAs are in touch with me even today,” Modi

Narendra Modi (File)

told an election rally in Hooghly district. “It will be tough for you to save yourself. You have cheated the people of Bengal,” he said. Trinamool spokesman and Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien said his party would move the Election Commission charging Modi with horse trading. However, he also rubbished Modi’s statement, claiming nobody will go with him.

CSU protest against teachers’ shortage (From p-1) The union expressed concern that the school could stop functioning by next year if all the vacant posts were not occupied immediately. CSU has urged the responsible authority to take appropriate measures at the earliest for the welfare of the students and the school as a whole. Failing to comply with its appeal within two months, the CSU has warned that it would take own course of action. Meanwhile, CSU has also urged the district school education department to release the text books to the schools at the earliest as quarterly examination was approaching.

NNC/GDRN (NA) reacts to NSCN (I-M)’s claim

(From p-1) struggle for self determination is well regarded by every Naga, whether living at home or abroad. NNC/GDRN (NA) maintained that it would neither subjugate any Naga national political group nor destroy the Naga national fabric but that as a genuine people-based movement for the Naga cause, it would stand for the people until the legitimate right of Nagas was fully accepted by the Indian government. This was because it is the question of “Indo-Naga” conflict and not of national political groups of Nagas. NNC/GDRN(NA) said its sincere foundation will not be allowed to be sabotaged by any of its members who had defected to NSCN (I-M) nor permitted to change by arrogance of external power. However, being people’s government, the organisation will evolve in line with the rest of the Naga political groups for the Naga political cause, the statement added.

“Expiry Babu PM, let’s get this straight. Nobody will go with you. Not even one councillor. Are you election campaigning or horse trading! Your expiry date is near. Today, we are complaining to the Election Commission. Charging you with horse trading,” he tweeted. But BJP National Secretary Rahul Sinha endorsed Modi’s comments and said many of the Trinamool leaders as well as senior state and police officers are in touch with his party. “Also a number of senior state officers and police officers who are now forced to work for the state’s ruling regime are also calling us and saying that they are forced to do so to protect their jobs. Things will change after the poll result,” he added. BJP state Secretary Ritesh Ti-

wari seconded Sinha. “The BJP will win a majority of the 42 seats. And once the elections are announced, the Trinamool government will go, as the party will collapse like a packet of cards. There are some good people in Trinamool. They will join us. The good persons among their MLAs will also cross over to our side,” Tiwari told IANS. Trinamool legislator Arjun Singh, who joined the BJP and is now the saffron party’s candidate from Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency, said a month back that 100 legislators from the ruling party would join the BJP “soon”. The four-time legislator from Bhatpara told media persons on March 27 that some of the lawmakers would come to the saffron party’s fold before the coming general elections, while theothers

would cross over after the polls. He said the legislators were keeping regular contact with the BJP leaders. Left Front legislature party leader and CPI-M state secretariat member Sujan Chakraborty accused the Prime Minister of resorting to horse-trading, but also said Banerjee is being given a dose of her own medicine. “It is clear-cut horse trading. It shows the Prime Minister does not have faith in democracy and people’s opinion. He is talking about stealing away leaders from the opposition party. “Mamata Banerjee resorted to the same tactics earlier. She wooed away leaders from other parties. Now she is being paid back in her own coin. Modi and Mamata are complementing each other,” Chakraborty told IANS.

France to now recognise four Indian academic qualifications New Delhi, Apr 29 (IANS): Four Indian academic qualifications— Senior School Certificate (SSC), Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and PhDs— from government-approved institutions will now be recognised by the French government with effect from May 1. Similarly, the French equivalents of these qualifications will be recognised by the Indian government. This has been made possible by an agreement between France and India for the Mutual Recognition of Academic Qualifications signed during President Emmanuel Macron’s maiden State visit to India last year.

The agreement, which will come into force from May 1, was inked on March 10 last year during the India-France Knowledge Summit, the first highlevel summit for university, scientific and technological cooperation held by the two countries, a statement by the French Embassy here said on Monday. It is the first such intergovernmental agreement that India has entered into. As per the agreement, the educational qualifications from India (from government-approved institutions) which are now recognised by the French government are All India Senior School Certificate

Examination (AISSCE) (CBSE, state boards, preuniversity (PU) or any equivalent qualification recognised by the Government of India), Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Ph.D, the statement said. The educational qualifications, recognised by the French Ministry of Higher Education and which will now be recognised by the Indian government, are Baccalaureat (equivalent to AISSCE), License(equivalent to Bachelor’s in India), Master’s and Master’s level qualifications (equivalent to Master’s in India) and Doctorat (equivalent to Ph.D. in India).

New Delhi, Apr 29 (AGENCIES): The Union government on Monday made a mention before Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi seeking time to file its response to the Rafale review petitions. Senior advocate R. Balasubramanium, for the government, sought permission to circulate a letter for additional time to file a reply. He sought a deferment of the hearing scheduled for April 30. A contempt petition filed by BJP lawmaker Meenakshi Lekhi is listed for hearing along with the review petitions. The court allowed the government to circulate the letter but did not comment on an adjournment. On April 10, a Bench led by the CJI refused the government’s preliminary plea to keep the Rafale

were found to be germane to the Rafale case, and dismiss the review pleas at the preliminary stage. The court, however, rubbished the government’s claim of privilege. It said neither the OSA nor any other law empowered the government to stop the media from publishing the documents nor the court from examining them. Besides, Chief Justice Gogoi, in the main opinion, said that claiming privilege over the documents was an “exercise in utter futility”. They were already within the reach and knowledge of the entire citizenry. This being the scenario, there was no reason for the Supreme Court to stop itself from “reading and considering the documents or from shutting out its evidentiary worth and value”.

AR accuses UPA’s silence on 26/11 attack still hurts: Gambhir NSCN (I-M) of New Delhi, Apr 29 (IANS): Cricketer-turnedpolitician Gautam Gambhir, who is contesting as the BJP candidate from East Delhi, on Monday took a swipe at the previous Congressled UPA government over its silence after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack saying it still hurts him. Addressing a Yuva Sansad in the Ghazipur area of his constituency, Gambhir said: “After the Pulwama terror attack, we did not hesitate in taking a strong and bold decision while the silence of the Congress-led government after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack still hurts.” He referred to the air strike carried out by the Indian Air Force (IAF) on

February 26 across the border in Pakistan targeting the terror camps. The Narendra Modiled government is working to ensure India becomes a strong nation, he added. Gambhir held ‘padyatras’ in Khizrabad and addressed meetings in Bhogal, Siddharth Nagar and Daryaganj as part of his voter outreach programme. He also said his family has been living in Delhi for the last four decades and he has love and affection for the city. He said that his priorities will be to get a Delhi University campus for east Delhi and re-development of the Yamuna Sports Complex among other things.

(From p-1) PRO said villagers who were again sent towards the camp on Monday met David Rambo of NSCN (I-M), who is awaiting instructions from Hebron. Alleging that despite extreme restraint shown by troops, no action has been taken by NSCN (I-M) to vacate the “unauthorised camp”, the defence PRO said this is a serious violation of ceasefire ground rules by the organisation. The onus for further escalation rests with NSCN (I-M) hierarchy, if the unauthorised camp is not vacated immediately, he cautioned.

ticularly for SME accounts,” said Ravikumar. The draft circular further suggests that while customers (with Rs 5-50 crore credit) may open current accounts with any lending bank (which is not a consortium leader), only collection accounts can be run with non-lending banks. The proposed regulation owes its origin to RBI’s 2004 directive to banks advising them to ensure that their branches do not open current accounts of entities which enjoy credit facilities (fund based or nonfund based) from the banking system without specifically obtaining a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the lending bank(s). Later, banks were allowed to open current accounts of prospective customers in case no response was received from existing bankers within a fortnight.

But RBI and lead banks fear that allowing such customers to withdraw funds ostensibly for production, may be diverted by promoters for making preferred payments or to their relatives and associates. Also, there are inflows which are not from regular businesses but as new private borrowings by the stressed account to improve their production capabilities. Here, lending banks tend to impound those credits as well. It would help SMEs if the practice of unilaterally impounding credits at operating level in bank branches is stopped par-

while there would be no restriction on the amount or number of ‘credits’ in collection accounts with other banks (which are not leading consortium), the ‘debits’ should be limited to remitting the proceeds to the current or escrow accounts maintained with the lead bank. The regulator has indicated that all such ‘existing’ current accounts where the account holding bank is not the consortium leader/ escrow managing bank would either have to be converted into collection account or closed, after giving due notice to the account holders, within three months from the date of the final circular. Accordingly, no debits would be permitted in such accounts after the stipulated period of three months other than for remittance to the lending bank(s). Such rules, said vet-

This is particularly true for stressed accounts...,” a senior banker told ET. However, once the proposed regulation is executed, many midsized and smaller banks, which do not lead consortia, fear a dip in CASA (current and saving accounts) numbers that enable banks to lower cost of fund. “On one hand RBI wants discipline in opening current accounts. On the other hand, a low CASA often does not go well with the regulator which occasionally points this out in the course of inspection,” said another banker. According to RBI,

MUMBAI, Apr 29 (Agencies): In a move to tackle fund diversion, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has proposed sterner rules on opening and running of current accounts of corporate borrowers. According to Economic Times, current accounts, according to a draft circular shared by the regulator with the banking industry, can “only be opened” with the lead bank in a lending consortium while other banks having collection accounts will have to transfer funds at the end of the day to the current account with the consortium leader. RBI has suggested that the rule would apply to accounts of corporates which have borrowed and availed credit facilities of Rs 50 crore or more from the banking system. “RBI suspects that many corporates run col-

His latest Twitter statements echo some of his previous social media interventions on the issue, claiming that his offer to pay back the debt owed by his nowdefunct airline had been rebuffed by the banks and the Indian government. “Watched TV debate on the sad collapse of Jet which included unpaid employees and Industry veterans. sive discussion with various employee groups across the company and also with colleagues who have in the past successfully held senior management positions. “We recognize that legacy issues of high operating costs, overstaffing, unfavourable vendor/lease agreements and adverse debt/equity ratio are involved,” the proposal letter said. The associations have also urged the lenders to ensure the process of deregistration of aircraft and re-allocation of airport slots be immediately reversed. “... if not reversed quickly, (it) would spell doom for any future prospects of reviving the company,” the associations warned. Lenders of Jet Airways led by SBI are currently in the process of selling the airline to recover their dues of over Rs 8,400 crore. SBI Caps, the merchant banking arm of SBI, is short-listing the investors for submitting the financial proposal by April-end. Private equity firm TPG Capital, Indigo Partners, National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and Etihad Airways are in the race to buy a stake in the grounded airline.

He has been allocated July 2 as the date for a brief hearing to convince a high court judge that he should be given permission to proceed to a full-blown appeal against Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court ruling last December in favour of his extradition to India. The judge had concluded there was “clear evidence of dispersal and misapplication of the loan funds” and accepted a prima facie case of fraud and a conspiracy to launder money against Mallya, as presented by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) on behalf of the Indian authorities. Meanwhile, the businessman also faces a flurry of other legal cases in UK courts related to a worldwide freezing order and a threat of foreclosure of one of his homes in central London.

New Delhi, Apr 29 (IANS): Sensing that the options to revive the grounded Jet Airways are fast running out, a group of airline employees has written to SBI seeking permission to allow a consortium of employees and external investors to bid for the company’s management control. The employee representatives have said they will secure an investment of up to Rs 3,000 crore from “outside investors”. The associations that have sent the proposal are the Society for Welfare of Indian Pilots (SWIP) and the Jet Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Welfare Association (JAMEWA). The associations have promised that employees would contribute towards revival of the airline from their future earnings and increased productivity. “As per our initial estimate, the contribution of employee group over a hypothetical 5-year Employee Stock Ownership Programme (ESOP) is likely to be upward of Rs 4,000 crore,” a joint letter to the SBI Chairman stated. LONDON, Apr 29 (PTI): Embattled liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya took to social media on Monday to lament the collapse of Jet Airways and repeated his offer of a “100 per cent payback” for state-owned Indian banks to cover his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines’ debt. The 63-year-old former Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) boss is currently appealing against his extradition order from the UK to India to face charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to an alleged Rs 9,000 crores. Mallya drew parallels between the plight of his collapsed airline and that of Jet Airways, India’s leading private airline which grounded to a halt earlier this month amid a mounting cash crunch. “Several Indian airlines collapsed sadly including KFA. Now, the previously unthinkable has happened with the collapse of Jet,” Mallya said on Twitter on Monday. “Genuine business failures. But I am criminally charged by CBI/ED despite offering 100% payback. Wonder why only me,” he

Face veil banned in Sri Lanka

C O LO M B O, A P R 2 9 (PTI): Muslim women in Sri Lanka will not be allowed to wear any form of face veils in public from Monday under new regulations announced by President Maithripala Sirisena who used emergency powers in the wake of the Easter Sunday bombings. The new regulation banning any form of face covering was announced by the President on Sunday, a week after the coordinated blasts hit three churches and three luxury hotels, killing over 250 people and injuring more than 500 others. It specifically mentions “any face garment which hinders identification”. “The ban is to ensure national security... No one should obscure their faces to make identification difficult,” Sirisena’s office said in a statement. He took steps under the emergency regulation to prohibit the use of face coverings of all sorts which is an obstacle to ensure the identity of the people and a threat to national and public

security. The order clarifies that the key criterion for establishing the identity of a person is the need to clearly expose the face. The President has taken this decision to establish a peaceful and cohesive society which does not inconvenience any community people as well as ensure national security. The presidential communiqué, however, makes no mention of niqab and burqa. The government was contemplating the move to ban both niqab and burka.

They sought cooperation from the Muslim clerics some of whom issued statements that both must be refrained from wearing in view of the current volatile security situation. “We have permitted people to leave their homes with faces uncovered as means to cooperate with the security forces,” Fazil Farook, a spokesman for Jamiyyathul Ulema, or the Muslim theologists body, said. There has been a public demand to ban the niqab and burka following the bomb attacks.

Hijab, niqab, burka are different kinds of coverings worn by Muslim women all over the world. Hijab covers the head and neck but leaves the face clear. Niqab is a veil for the face that leaves the area around the eyes clear and burka is one-piece veil that covers the entire face, leaving just a net screen to see through. Muslims account for 10 per cent of the population and are the second-largest minority after Hindus. Around seven per cent of Sri Lankans are Christians. Nine suicide bombers carried out a series of devastating blasts that tore through three churches and three luxury hotels on the Easter Sunday, killing 253 people. It was reported that at least three women suicide bombers had been involved. The Islamic State claimed the attacks, but the government has blamed local Islamist extremist group National Thowheeth Jamaath (NTJ) for the attacks.

Pak to bring madrassas under govt control ISLAMABAD, APR 29 (AGENCIES): Pakistan’s military spokesman says authorities plan to bring over 30,000 religious schools under government control as part of their campaign against extremism, reports AP. Maj. Gen. Asif Ghafoor says millions of students in the seminaries currently only get religious education but once the schools are mainstreamed, they’ll also be able to receive a contemporary education. Ghafoor spoke at a press conference in the garrison city of Rawalpindi on Monday. He also said once the madrassas — some of which are considered hotbeds of radicalism — are brought under government control, 25 million Pakistani children now out of school could be enrolled in the seminaries. There was no immediate reaction from the seminaries, which are linked to various Pakistani religious groups and which have resisted any form of government control in the past.

Jihadists attack Burkina church; kill pastor, four others

OUAGADOUGOU, APR 29 (AFP): Gunmen killed four worshippers and a pastor in the first jihadist attack on a church in Burkina Faso, security and local sources said Monday. Sunday’s attack took place in the small northern town of Silgadji near Djibo, the capital of Soum prov-

ince, and two others were reported missing. “Unidentified armed individuals have attacked the Protestant church in Silgadji, killing four members of the congregation and the main pastor,” a security source told AFP. “At least two other people are missing,” the

source added. It was the first attack on a church since jihadist violence erupted in the west African nation. Muslim clerics and imams have been targeted as well. “The attack happened around 1:00 pm, just as the faithful were leaving the church at the end of the service,” a member of the church who did not want to be identified told AFP. “The attackers were on motorbikes. They fired in the air before aiming at the members of the congregation,” the witness added. Burkina Faso has suffered from increasingly frequent and deadly attacks attributed to a number of jihadist groups, including the Ansarul Islam group, the Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM) and Islamic State in the Greater Sahara. The attacks started in the north of the country before targetting the capital Ouagadougou and other regions, notably the east of the country.

3,000 kg garbage collected from Mt Everest Prez suspends defiant Lankan police chief over blasts

KATHMANDU, APR 29 (IANS): A total of 3,000 kg of solid waste has been collected from the Mt Everest region since the beginning of the Nepal governmentbacked Sagarmatha Cleaning Campaign on April 14, the media reported on Monday. Dandu Raj Ghimire, Director General of Department of Tourism, informed that of the total garbage collected so far, 2,000 kg has been sent to Okhaldhunga while 1,000 kg has been brought to Kathmandu using Nepali Army helicopters for dis-

posal, reports The Himalayan Times. “Our team has now reached the Everest Base Camp for the cleaning campaign. All the necessary things including food, water and shelter have already been arranged there,” Ghimire said. The Department estimates that around 23 million Nepalese rupees will be spent for the campaign. “Under this campaign we will be collecting around 5,000 kg of garbage from the Base Camp area, while 2,000 kg of garbage will be collected from the South

Col region and around 3,000 kg from Camp II and Camp III areas,” Ghimire added. The team also located four bodies while cleaning the Base Camp. This is the first time that the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, the Ministry of Environment, Nepali Army, Nepal Mountaineering Association, Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality and Nepal Tourism Board are working jointly to clean up the world’s highest peak.

C O LO M B O, A P R 2 9 (PTI): Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Monday suspended defiant police chief Pujith Jayasundara and named his successor as well as a new defence secretary as part of the revamping of the security establishment following the country’s worst terror attack. Sirisena on Friday said that Jayasundara had resigned but he never sent the letter and remained in his official residence, according to officials. Senior Deputy Inspec-

tor General C D Wickremaratne has been appointed as the acting police chief while former Inspector General N K Illangakoon named as an advisor to the Defence Ministry, according to the President’s office. Police chief Jayasundara was asked to quit along with defence ministry secretary Hemasiri Fernando, taking responsibility for the intelligence failure that led to the bombings. Jayasundara, however, refused to heed Sirisena’s call to resign following April 21 coordinated blasts on

three churches and three luxury hotels. The police chief in Sri Lanka can only be removed through a parliamentary procedure and Sirisena’s action suspending him is the first step towards that, the officials said. The attacks carried out by suicide bombers came in spite of early warnings and the security establishment’s failure to take preventive action has come under severe criticism. Sirisena, who also keeps the defence portfolio with him, said he wanted to

revamp the security system and his defence ministry secretary Fernando resigned promptly on his request on Thursday. Deputy Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Nalin Bandara said a motion to remove the police chief will be tabled in Parliament within this week, Sri Lanka Mirror reported. Noting that the motion will be tabled on the agreement of all government MPs, he hoped to get the backing of opposition MPs as well, it said.

President Sirisena last week said that intelligence failures led to the blasts, the country’s worst terror attack. Meanwhile, the police chief has said that he has done nothing wrong and that he would resign if the defence minister resigns as well. Nine suicide bombers carried out a series of devastating blasts that tore through three churches and three luxury hotels on the Easter Sunday, killing 253 people and injuring over 500 people.

Populists expected to gain seats in EU elections BRUSSELS, APR 29 (AGENCIES): The European Parliament is predicting that nationalist, populist and anti-migrant groups will make significant gains in the May 23-26 EU elections but says it thinks mainstream parties will keep control over the assembly, reports AP. Projections released Thursday suggest the center-right European People’s Party will remain the biggest group, with 180 seats in the 751-seat parliament, down 37 seats. The center-left Socialists and Democrats would drop from 186 to 149 seats.

Earlier, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesman had said that the Monday meeting would be a part of “regular consultation on bilateral relationship and Afghan peace process”. According to media reports, Khalilzad is expected to meet the Taliban in Doha in the coming days, but peace talks have been criticized for failing, so far, over including members of the Afghan government, which the militant group views as a “puppet regime”. Last week, the special envoy said that Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s stance on Afghanistan had the potential to positively transform the region and give Islamabad “a leading role”.

Campaign on plastic waste management NUSU(L) cultural & literary meet

Pichano Kikon, Y. Nuklu Phom and RBC members with participants of the plastic waste management program held in Longleng on April 29.

DIMAPUR: Ray Beacons Club (RBC), in collaboration with Longleng Town Council (LTC), conducted a campaign on plastic waste management at Longleng town on April 29, under the

theme “Thread of the 21st century global family.” A press release from RBC president Haushing stated that Pichano Kikon, EAC headquarter Longleng, in her speech,

encouraged participation of all community members in safeguarding the environment. She requested leaders to think about what we are preserving for our children. Pichano pointed

out that all plastic waste flow into the rivers leading to massive destruction of water species. She invited the members to reduce, reuse and recycle all waste materials instead

of creating an unsafe environment through careless exercises. The resource person of the campaign Y. Nuklu Phom, speaking on the theme, stressed on the diminishing and depleting resources of the environment due to human irresponsibility and carelessness toward safeguarding nature. He said plastic had caused much damage to entire eco-systems, and diluted streams and rivers flow into oceans and seas endangering various species. RBC members presented a drama about environmental degradation and also demonstrated how to use banana stems instead of polythene bags to raise saplings etc. The club members also distributed their own designed carry bags to all those who participated. The prog ram was chaired by Baüom Shukha and Nyemla associate pastor, LTBC, said the invocation.

UPA-III could become a reality: Chidambaram New Delhi, Apr 29 (PTI): Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has described the five year rule of the Narendra Modi government as a “complete disaster”, saying the BJP will not be able to form the next government and UPAIII could be a reality. The former Union minister also said the BJP’s “campaign of polarisation” is a complete failure in southern and western states and the impact it will have in northern and eastern India remains to be seen. “We are absolutely confident that the BJP will not be able to form the government again. The government will be a non-BJP government. Obviously, the UPA that is Congress plus pre-election allies will play a big part. If there are more post election allies, I think UPA-III has a very good chance,” he told PTI in an interview. Giving an analysis of the performance of the Modi government, Chidambaram said on economic front, it has absolutely and conclusively established that economic growth has slowed down and “unemployment is highest in 45 years”. “In fact, I have the data put out

P Chidambaram (File)

by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy which shows unemployment has reached 8.4 per cent in the third week of April 2019. It is the highest unemployment rate in over 45 years,” he said. On the social harmony, the former finance minister said there has been a complete breakdown of social harmony, particularly in northern states where community is pitted against community, caste is pitted against caste and and all these have happened under Modi. On the security front, Chidambaram said the country was today less secured than what it was under former prime minister Manmohan Singh. “During the 10 years of the UPA rule, there was no war with Pakistan or China. Although there was infiltration and casualties, they had come down to the lowest level in 2013-14,”

he said. In the ‘Modi years’, the Congress leader said, infiltration has increased year after year and there is always a danger or fear that a war may break out anytime between India and Pakistan. “It is a complete disaster,” he said. Chidambaram added that the BJP’s “campaign of polarisation” has been a complete failure in Southern India along with Gujarat, Goa and Maharashtra. “What impact it will have in central Indian states where Hindi is spoken-- Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand-- remains to be seen. They again tried in (West) Bengal, they have not succeeded so far. They tried in Odisha, they have not succeeded. They are trying in Assam. “Let us see what the results will be. BJP’s polarisation campaign is a failure in the majority of states in India,” he said. Asked about the possibility of Congress chief Rahul Gandhi becoming the prime minister, Chidambaram said the Gandhi scion has made it clear that the party is not going to talk about the post of PM at this stage.

Rijiju hits out at Cong for ‘criminal injustice’ to Ladakh

Leh, April 29 (PTI): Union Minister Kiren Rijiju lashed out at the Congress on Monday for “decades of criminal injustice” to the people of Ladakh. Addressing rallies at Nyoma in Changthang region near the Line of Actual Control here, the minister of state for home said in the 72 years of independence, Congress enjoyed power for 60 years but the party did not manage to do anything for the common man. “The Congress has unleashed a demonic culture of looting the nation’s resources for filling their own pockets, which has done enough harm to the nation and it should be stopped at once”, he said, campaigning for the BJP’s candidate Jamyang Tsering Namgyal in Ladakh Parliamentary Seat, which is primarily Buddhist-dominated. Flanked by BJP state president Ravinder Raina, MLC Tsering Dorjey, MP candidate Namgyal, Rijiju told gatherings at Khalsti and Neoma of Ladakh to vote for the favour BJP. He appealed to the people to teach Congress a lesson as the grand old party had “abandoned the Ladakh region for filling its own kitty”. Rijiju said while the Congress party only serves a single family, the BJP is a party which cares for the whole country. He said the Modi-led government had undertaken record number

of development works in the country in only five years. He said mass voting in favour of the BJP would strengthen Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s hands to undertake development work in the region. He said Namgyal will fulfil the expectations of the people with full support of the central leadership. Ravinder Raina, in his address, said the BJP has put an end to the discrimination that the people of Ladakh were facing for decades. He said the same spirit will be carried forward by Namgyal as MP. Namgyal resolved to develop the Ladakh region on the most modern lines. Ladakh Lok Sabha constituency is the largest in India in terms of area. Out of the six parliamentary constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh has the least number of polling stations at 559 and the fewest voters at 1,71,819. Leh and Kargil districts have 294 and 265 polling stations respectively.

Kerala IS suspects under NIA lens after calls to SL New Delhi, Apr 29 (IANS): Suspected IS sympathisers in various parts of Kerala are on the NIA’s radar in wake of the horrendous Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka following intercepts of calls between people in the state and the island nation as well as some Facebook accounts on which “provocative” materials were uploaded, sources said. The telephonic intercepts, an National Investigation Agency (NIA) official said, include chats that occurred on multiple occasions among people in Malappuram, Kasargod

and Palakkad in Kerala and those in Sri Lanka. Besides, Facebook accounts of some suspects in Kerala and Tamil Nadu that had been active till 10 days before the Sri Lanka blasts are part of investigation of the anti-terror agency which unearthed a suspected Islamic State module in Kasargod and Palakkad during its raid on Sunday at the houses of three people. T h e Fa c e b o o k a c counts, the details of which were not shared by the official on grounds that it can affect the investigation, were being used to upload “jihadi preachings and provoca-

tive” materials to radicalize people and persuade them to pledge allegiance to the Islamic State. The IP addresses of some computers and laptops used to upload some incriminating videos and sermons of different Islamic preachers on Youtube are also under scrutiny of the NIA, the official, requesting anonymity, told IANS. The NIA suspects that the operators in Kerala are Islamic State sympathizers and might have been in touch with the groups headed by Zahran Hashim, a radical Tamil-speaking cleric who is believed to

have master-minded the Sri Lanka blasts. Hashim was found to be in touch with the Islamic State sympathizers during his visit to Malappuram in Kerala, and Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Vellore and Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu some time in 20172018, another official said. Questioning of Ahamed Arafat, Aboobacker Siddique and Riyas Abu Bakar whose houses were raided, according to an NIA source, could not lead the agency to fruitful results in the Sri Lanka blasts investigation but confirmed that they had links with

the accused in a 2016 case in which 14 people from Kasaragod left India or their workplaces in the Middle East for Afghanistan and Syria to join the Islamic State. The April 21 attacks on three churches and three luxury hotels in Colombo and elsewehre killed 253 people, including 11 Indian nationals and some foreigners, and injured 500. Fifteen people, including three suicide bombers, died during a raid by Sri Lankan security forces on Friday night and nearly 100 people have been detained in the island nation.

EC notice to Giriraj over ‘communal’ remarks New Delhi, Apr 29 (IANS): The Election Commission on Monday issued a showcause notice to Union Minister and BJP candidate from Bihar’s Begusarai Lok Sabha constituency, Giriraj Singh, for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by making controversial remarks against Muslims. The Commission cited Singh’s comment at G.D. Collage in Begusarai on April 24 where he said: “The nation will never forgive them who can’t say ‘Vande Mataram’ or cannot respect the motherland. My ancestors died at Simaria Ghat and did not need a grave but you need three arms’ length of land.”

Simaria Ghat is a cremation ground in the district located on the banks of river Ganga. An FIR has already been lodged against Singh at Begusarai Town Police Station by the district administration. In the notice, the Commission said Singh prima facie has violated the provisions of the MCC and the Representation of People Act, besides “wilfully” disobeying Supreme Court’s order barring the use of caste and religion during electioneering. It has asked Singh to respond within 24 hours of the receipt of the notice, failing which it would take a decision without further reference to him.

Rae Bareli, Apr 29 (AGENCIES): Cricketerturned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday said people should learn nationalism from UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who is the sitting MP from Rae Bareli. He also said he would quit politics if Congress chief Rahul Gandhi lost the Lok Sabha election from Amethi. Sidhu was with the BJP earlier but is now a minister in the Congress government in Punjab. He rejected the BJP’s oft-repeated charge that there had been no economic development in 70 years, most of it under Congress rule. Rather, the country made everything from a needle to an aircraft during this period, he said. He lauded Sonia Gandhi for leading the Congress ably after her husband Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination. It was due to her leadership that the Congress could retain power at the Centre for 10 years (20042014), he said. Taking a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party, he said anyone who remained loyal to it was considered a nationalist and those who left it were dubbed antinational. The former cricketer also said that the controversy over the Rafale deal will lead to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s defeat in the general election.

Cyclone Fani: Odisha on high alert

‘Fani’ is likely to turn severe on Monday and intensify further into a ‘very severe’ cyclonic storm on Tuesday. (File)

Bhubaneswar, Apr 29 (PTI): With the Centre issuing advisory on Cyclone Fani progressing towards the eastern coast, the Odisha government Monday said it has put the coastal districts on high alert and is prepared to face any eventuality. The entire administration is on high alert following the IMD report on the cyclone and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has reviewed the situation arising out of it, officials said. The IMD report said the cyclone is very likely to move nortwestward till May 1 and thereafter recurve north-northeastward towards Odisha coast. Cabinet secretary P K Sinha held a video conference with coastal states’ chief secretaries and the

ministry of home affairs issued two back to back advisories on the impending natural calamity during the day. As soon as the polling for the fourth and final phase of elections came to an end this evening, Patnaik reviewed the situation and issued direction to the chief secretary to ensure “zero casualty” in case the cyclone strikes the state. Patnaik asked the administration to be prepared to evacuate people in case it makes its landfall in the state or there is heavy rainfall in low lying and flood prone areas. The chief minister also issued direction to stock adequate food materials in the panchayat level considering the time that the unusual timing of the cyclone.

EC gets notice on plea questioning EVMs

SpiceJet plane veers off runway on landing; pilots suspended

New Delhi, Apr 29 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Election Commission on a plea challenging the legal provision mandating six months jail for questioning Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). On a petition filed by Sunil Ahya, an SC bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi heard the arguments and issued the notice to the Election Commission. According to Section 49 MA of the Code of Election Rules, if a person files a complaint regarding discrepancy in the EVM, and if after investigation it is found to be false or incorrect, then the complainant can be prosecuted under Section 177 of the Indian Penal Code for “furnishing false information”. This section invites “six months in jail or a fine of Rs 1,000 or both”. Ahya contended that such a provision in election rules will act as a deterrent for voters experiencing faults in the EVMs from lodging a formal complaint. Claiming that the provision was not fair and that it will discourage voters with genuine complaints from coming forward, the petitioner said.

Mumbai, Apr 29 (PTI): A Boeing 737 aircraft operated by low-cost carrier SpiceJet Monday overshot the runway while landing at the Shirdi airport, bringing the regional facility to a complete halt, airport director Dhiren Bhosale said. The incident took place at 1630 hours, the airline said, adding all the passengers and the crew are safe. The airline also grounded both the pilots pending an internal enquiry, while the regulator DGCA has dispatched off an official to the airport to carry out the initial probe into the mishap. H o w e ve r, a f u l l fledged investigation will be conducted by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, which has the mandate to probe all serious incidents and accidents involving all commercial and private planes. According to sources, passengers and the crew were trapped inside the plane for over two-and-ahalf hours, but are however, safe, and efforts are on to tow away the aircraft from the runway and resume operations at the earliest. “A SpiceJet aircraft

The costal district collectors of Ganjam, Khurda, Puri and Kendrapara have meanwhile cancelled the holidays and leaves of government employees as part of the preparedness to face the possible calamity. “We are preparing a contingency plan to face the situation. We will go for evacuation if required,” Puri district collector J P Das said. In a high level meeting attended by the top official of Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, NDRF, Odisha Police and all department secretaries, Chief Secretary A P Padhi sought the cooperation of all agencies. Stating that the IMD has so far not given any definite information regarding possible landfall of the cyclone in the state, Padhi

shot off the runway by about 50 meters and skidded off. There is no injury to any passenger and the crew, though. Our first priority is to evacuate passengers without compromising their safety,” Bhosale told PTI over phone from Shirdi airport that primarily serves the pilgrims to the popular Hindu shrine, and is around 180 km northeast off the megapolis. The number of passengers and crew on board the B737- 800 aircraft is not known immediately, Bhosale added. The airline also refused to share the passenger and crew details. He said the aircraft is stuck on the runway due to which all arrivals and departures are halted. “We are making all efforts to tow away the aircraft and clear the runway to resume operations as soon as possible,” Bhosale said. SpiceJet in a statement said its B737-800 aircraft (SG 946) from New Delhi to Shirdi was involved in the incident. “While landing at Shirdi, the aircraft overshot the runway. The passengers and the crew who are safe are being deplaned normally,” the airline said.

said its forecast shows that the cyclone is likely to pass near the Odisha coast. “We are leaving no stone unturned and are preparing to face the situation”, he said adding the fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea during the period. Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) B P Sethi said “Though the IMD has not issued any information on the possible landfall of Cyclone Fani in the state, we are keeping a watch on the information being issued by international agencies such as the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre.” Sethi said all the 880 cyclone centres besides 20 units of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force, 12 units of National Disaster Response Force and 335 fire units have been put on alert. Boats are also kept in readiness for rescue operation if required, he said. Modi talking like a ‘dictator’: Ashok Gehlot J o d h p u r / C h u ru, Apr 29 (PTI): Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot Monday claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on course to becoming a “dictator” who talks of nationalism to captivate the people. After casting his vote with his family in the morning, the Congress leader told reporters that Modi had been “dividing the nation and the society in the name of nationalism”, which posed a “threat” to democracy. Later in day, the chief minister spoke at a rally in Sardarshahar town under Churu Lok Sabha constituency which was also addressed by Congress president Rahul Gandhi. “History says every dictator first talks of nationalism and captivate the people. Modi has been doing the same thing, but the people, especially the

Ashok Gehlot (File)

young generation, need to understand this,” Gehlot told reporters in Jodhpur in the morning. Modi is “on course to becoming a dictator, which is a huge threat to the democracy of the country”, he said. “He (Modi) has a perverted version of patriotism and has got down to exploit this term to win the election only by emotionally misleading the people, especially the youth,” the chief minister said.

Gehlot accused Modi of turning the electoral debate from the issues of development to nationalism and patriotism. “Aren’t others patriots?” he asked. After casting his vote, the chief minister left for Saipau village in Dholpur district to join Congress president Rahul Gandhi in a public meeting. At the election meeting in Sardarshahar town he claimed the prime minister wants to win the elections by engaging people in “issueless politics”. “There should issues in elections. Rahul Gandhi has been repeatedly asking the prime minister to talk on issues,” Gehlot said. “The prime minister never talks about his vision, policies, programmes for farmers, labourers, women, youths of the country. They (BJP leadership) want to win the election by

engaging people in issues like Ram temple and patriotism. They want to win election in the name of the defence forces,” the chief minister said. He alleged that an atmosphere of fear, hatred and violence has been created in the country, which is very dangerous for democracy. Claiming that the Congress always keeps its promises, the Rajasthan chief minister said, “Rahul Gandhi had promised farm loan waiver before the assembly elections and our government waived loans given by the cooperative bank and the Bhumi Vikas Bank as soon as the Congress came to power.” “ We p r o m i s e d t o waive loans up to Rs 2 lakh taken from nationalized banks. We will do it after the Lok Sabha elections,” he added.

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi asked the senior lawyer in a lighter vein: “Why don’t you mention the names clearly.”

Addressing a public meeting near the Aggarwal Tower in Narela, he appealed to people to bring back Congress to power as both the BJP and the AAP had “betrayed the people of Delhi”. “It was imperative for the Congress to win all the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi as the party is sure to

form a government at the Centre, under the leadership of Congress President Rahul Gandhi,” he said. Lilothia, who is pitted against BJP’s Hans Raj Hans and AAP’s Gugan Singh, said the last five years of Modi rule, there were attacks on secular and democratic forces, and even the common people were not spared and became victims of the BJP government’s high-handednessA He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of working as the agent of a few rich industrialists by totally ignoring the poor and common people. The elections on all the seven Lok Sabha seats in the national capital is scheduled on May 12 in the sixth phase. The BJP had won all the seats from the national capital in 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

SP fields sacked BSF jawan against Modi in Varanasi

New Delhi, Apr 29 (AGENCIES): “I am the real chowkidar,” said Tej Bahadur Yadav, former BSF jawan who was sacked in 2017 for his video complaining about the food served to the soldiers, soon after being declared the SP’s Varanasi candidate against PM Modi. Getting quickly into poll mode, the SP candidate said: “I am the real chowkidar, who protected the boundaries of the nation for 21 years and raised voice against corruption. Chowkidar term doesn’t suit PM Modi.” The Samajwadi Party made the surprise announcement on Monday to replace Shalini Yadav opposite PM Modi from this high-profile constituency. Shalini Yadav had unsuccessfully contested the Varanasi mayoral

election in 2017 and is the daughter-in-law of Shyam Lal Yadav, a former Congress Rajya Sabha member. The former jawan, who created a flutter with his 2017 video, said, “I am in the poll fray to show the mirror to PM Modi, not for victory and defeat. I will tell public that PM Modi who claims to be a well-wisher of the soldiers hasn’t fulfilled any of the promises he made to the soldiers. After knowing about the reality, public will support me.” The for m e r jawa n added that around 10,000 ex-servicemen will fan out in the constituency and seek support for him in a door-todoor campaign. Praising Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav for promising a Yadav regiment in the Army, Tej Bahadur said, “If I win from

40 killed in Indonesia floods, many displaced B E N G K U LU ( I N D O NESIA), APR 29 (AFP): Floods sparked by torrential rains have killed nearly 40 in Indonesia with a dozen more still missing, officials said Monday, marking the latest calamity for a disasterprone nation. Landslides and floods are common during the monsoon season between October and April, when rains lash the vast Southeast Asian archipelago. On Monday, Indonesia’s disaster agency confirmed 29 deaths and said at least 13 more people were missing in Sumatra island’s Bengkulu province. A landslide triggered by heavy rain in neighbouring Lampung province on Saturday also killed a family of six. Meanwhile, flooding in and around parts of the capital Jakarta last week killed at least two people, forced more than 2,000 to evacuate their homes and set 14 pet pythons on the loose. In Bogor, a satellite city of Jakarta, residents had to contend with the prospect of coming face to face with the giant serpents, after they were set loose from a private property due to the high waters. Six of the snakes -which were as long as four metres (13 feet) -- have been found, but eight were still missing, officials said at the weekend. “If you find them

please report it to authorities or volunteers,” said Indonesian disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. That was not much comfort for some Bogor residents. “We’re terrified to hear this,” said Samsudin, who goes by one name. “Apparently they’re very big so we want authorities to help us find them or take action.” In Sumatra, some 12,000 residents have been evacuated from water-logged Bengkulu with hundreds of buildings, bridges and roads damaged. Authorities have set up temporary shelters and public kitchens for those displaced by the rains. Hardest hit was Bengkulu Tengah district, just outside of the provincial capital, where 22 people were killed along with hun-

dreds of livestock. Illegal coal mining was partly to blame for deadly landslides, authorities said. “Apart from natural factors like the heavy rain, (the flooding) was also caused by human activity that destroys the environment,” disaster agency head Doni Monardo told reporters in Bengkulu on Monday. Activists have long warned deforestation from rampant mining in the province could trigger a catastrophe. At least four major rivers in Bengkulu overflow every time it rains due to environmental damage near their banks, activists said. “The flooding in Bengkulu was made worse by the severe damage... caused by coal mining,” Ali Akbar from local environmental group Kanopi Bengkulu said in a statement.

Airstrikes trap civilians in Libya’s Tripoli CAIRO, APR 29 (AGENCIES): Libyan forces loyal to a former military commander have intensified their airstrikes on Tripoli, where heavy fighting and blocked roads have left civilians trapped in their homes, officials said Monday. Field Marshal Khalifa Hifter’s self-styled Libyan National Army launched an operation to retake the capital on April 4 and has been locked in heavy fighting in and around the city with militias loosely allied with a U.N.-supported government. The clashes have killed more than 270 people, including 21 civilians, according to the latest U.N. figures released last week. Libyan officials said LNA airstrikes have targeted the Nawasi Brigade in the Abu Salim district, about 7 kilometers (4 miles) from Tripoli’s center. At least four civilians were killed, they said. They said airstrikes hit al-Qaqaa military camp in the town of al-Falah, south of Tripoli. The camp is controlled by powerful militias from the western town of Misrata that are also allied with the Tripoli

government. Airstrikes and shelling also hit the towns of Khallet al-Forjan, Ain Zara and al-Twaisha, south of the capital, and heavy fighting was underway in Salah al-Deen, an area that saw earlier clashes between rival militias in September. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters. Residents said fighting has been ongoing overnight in residential areas a few kilometers (miles) south of Tripoli. Both sides have used heavy artillery and airstrikes, they said. “We cannot move because of the shelling from

both sides. Our homes have been damaged. We are trying to leave the area to a safer place,” said Mohammed al-Trapoulsi, a 41-year-old father of three from Abu Salim. O n S u n d ay, L NA spokesman Ahmed alMosmari told a news conference in the eastern city of Benghazi that their warplanes targeted the Yarmuk military camp in Ain Zara. The two sides have traded control the strategic camp since the offensive began. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said Sunday the clashes have displaced more than 41,000 people.

International Slovak court rejects to ban far right party BRATISLAVA (SLOVAKIA), APR 29 (AGENCIES): Slovakia’s Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a request by the country’s prosecutor general to ban a far-right party that has 14 seats in the country’s parliament, reports AP. In his request filed two years ago, Jaromir Ciznar said the far-right People’s Party Our Slovakia is an extremist group whose activities violate the country’s constitution and its goal is to destroy the country’s democratic system. But the court ruled the prosecutor general failed to provide enough evidence for the ban. The verdict is final. “The ruling has clearly showed that our party is legitimate and democratic,” party chairman Marian Kotleba said on Monday. He said it was “a political trial.” The prosecutor’s office didn’t immediately comment. Kotleba’s supporters applauded in the court room while the opponents unveiled a banner in front of the court that read “Stop Fascism.” The party openly admires the Nazi puppet state that the country was during World War II. Party members use Nazi salutes, blame Roma for crime in deprived areas, consider NATO a terror group and want the country out of the alliance and the European Union.

Ghani calls for ‘durable peace’ at grand assembly KABUL, APR 29 (IANS): Afghanistan’s President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani stressed achieving viable peace in his militancy-battered country through dialogue in the much-awaited consultative Loya Jirga or traditional grand assembly of elders and chieftains inaugurated here on Monday. “I want to have lasting peace in Afghanistan and not the loose and shaky one. I am calling upon you people to define the peace talks and guide on how to talks with the Taliban and achieve viable peace,” Ghani said at the gathering. About 3,200 delegates across the country gathered at the four-day traditional assembly to discuss the measures on how to initiate dialogue with the Taliban to find a negotiated settlement to Afghanistan’s prolonged conflict, Xinhua news agency reported. Taliban militants have repeatedly refused to talk with Afghan government, saying there will be no

dialogue with the Kabul administration in the presence of foreign forces in the country. However, US special envoy for peace in Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad has held series of talks with the Taliban representatives in Qatar’s capital Doha since November 2018. But the last round of talks slated for April 19 had been cancelled on the ground of introducing a 250-member negotiating

team by the Afghan government. Ghani in his address categorically stated that all Afghans earnestly want to end the war and restore lasting peace in their country, calling upon the participants of the Jirga to debate freely and prepare a comprehensive guideline for the government to initiate negotiation with the Taliban that could yield the desired results. The consultative Loya Jirga was opened amid tight security as the government

put all security measures in place and declared one-week public holiday for the capital city in efforts to check any untoward incident. However, the critics including opposition politicians -- above all the government Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah and former President Hamid Karzai -- have boycotted the Jirga, arguing the consultative jirga has not been held in unity environment. Slamming the ongoing insurgency and conflict in Afghanistan as against Islamic teaching and illegitimate, Ghani noted that both sides had been paying a huge price in the war and “it is the time to give up fighting” and join hands for achieving peace in the country. Earlier in his opening remarks, head of the Jirga Mohammad Omar Daudzai, called upon all the opposition sides including the Taliban group to attend the Jirga and play their due role in ending the war and finding the way to achieve peace in Afghanistan.

Shared citizenship will benefit Russia, Ukraine: Putin M O S C OW, A P R 2 9 (AGENCIES): Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that Russians and Ukrainians would only benefit from sharing common citizenship, the Interfax news agency reported. Putin said on Saturday Moscow was considering offering all Ukrainian citizens fast-tracked Russian passports, a move that angered some politicians in Ukraine

not expect many Ukrainians to take up his offer of a Russian passport, while offering Ukrainian citizenship to Russians. Russia’s offer of citizenship is not only to the people who live in the rebel-held areas of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions, Putin told reporters in Beijing last Saturday, where he attended China’s second Belt and Road Initiative summit.

Stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs: China tells US BEIJING, APR 29 (IANS): China on Monday urged the US to respect China’s sovereignty and stop interfering in Hong Kong’s affairs. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang made the remarks in response to a statement by a US State Department spokesperson reportedly expressing “disappointment” over the decision by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government to indict and imprison several organizers of the 2014 illegal “Occupy Central” movement. The US spokesperson earlier said that Washington “will follow closely the proposed amendments to the HKSAR’s Fugitive Offenders Ordinance”. K

“China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes relevant remarks of the US Department of State spokesperson, which disregard the facts and laws,” Geng told a press briefing. He said the illegal “Occupy Central” movement inflicted severe damage on Hong Kong’s rule of law, social order, economy and people’s livelihood, according to Efe news. “Bringing criminal behaviour to justice according to law, as a due component of maintaining the rule of law, is widely supported by Hong Kong society. “The amendments to laws including the Ordinance are necessary measures taken by Hong Kong to cooperate with other

regions and countries in fugitives handover,” Geng said, adding that the moves were also aimed at jointly cracking down on crimes and maintaining the rule of law, to prevent Hong Kong from becoming a “crime haven”. The Chinese official said that the US arbitrary comments and blame on Hong Kong’s affairs were a “brutal interference” in the internal affairs of China and the HKSAR. “We urge the US to respect China’s sovereignty and the rule of law in Hong Kong, as well as the ‘judicial independence’ repeatedly professed by the US side and stop meddling in Hong Kong’s affairs in any form,” the spokesperson added.

Film stars vote with pride; show off inked finger De Niro and Scorsese talk reuniting for ‘The Irishman’ T A he Bachchans, the Roshans, the Khans, the Devgns and a stream of other Bollywood celebrities voted in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha elections here in Mumbai on Monday and urged others to step out and make their vote count. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan stepped out with wife Jaya, son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya to cast their votes, looking cool and calm in white. Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan also turned up with his wife Pinky, daughter Sunaina and son Hrithik in tow. Hrithik’s former father-in-law Sanjay Khan came out to vote with his son Zayed and daughter Farah Khan Ali. Actress Kareena Kapoor Khan brought along h e r t wo - ye a r - o l d s o n Taimur Ali Khan to cast her vote. Adding some colour and drama to a polling booth here was Ranveer Singh, who sported eclectic sunglasses and bright clothes. Kangana Ranaut wore a sari, and even Urmila Matondkar, the Congress

Actors Salman Khan and Aamir Khan also cast their vote, as did Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Karan Johar, Ranbir Kapoor, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Varun Dhawan, Rekha, Kiran Rao, Shankar Mahadevan, Paresh Rawal, Ravi Kishan, Ajay Devgn, Kajol, Kailash Kher, Mahesh Bhatt, Aahana Kum-

Every vote is a voice that counts,” tweeted Priyanka along with a selfie showing off her inked finger. Aamir, dressed casu-

ally, cracked a joke as the media approached him for a byte, but made a point about the importance of voting. Filmmaker Prakash Jha, who has had a tryst with politics, went to vote with his daughter. Madhuri wrote: “Voting is our right, let’s use it wisely! The future of our country is in our hands. Let’s do our duty and vote for India.” R. Madhavan, who

went to a polling booth with his wife, urged the youth to give “no excuses” for not voting. Actress Gul Panag wrote: “Go out and vote. Because the future depends on it. And not just our future, but the future of the next generation too. Every vote counts.” This election season, the film fraternity has been visibly divided over support for the competing political parties. While star candidates like Urmila and Sunny Deol are fighting elections, the BJP used Bollywood’s soft power and engaged celebrities like Aamir, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, A.R. Rahman, Ayushmann Khurrana and Alia Bhatt to appeal to citizens to come out and vote. On its part, the Congress mobilised Twitter to send out a Bollywood celeb-led message to citizens: “Vote karo, magar soch samajh ke” via a video featuring Kalki Koechlin, Varun Grover, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Nandita Das, Swara Bhasker, Vishal Dadlani, Renuka Shahane and many more. head of their muchanticipated and most recent collaboration, “The Irishman,” Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro convened at the Tribeca Film Festival to look back on their long partnership together. The talk, staged Sunday at New York’s Beacon Theatre, gave De Niro, co-founder of the festival, one of his most unlikely roles to date: interviewer. With interstitial clips chosen by Scorsese from the director’s filmography, the famously terse actor didn’t so much pepper or prod the filmmaker as occasionally announce it was time to discuss “the next one.” But if the conversation relied largely on Scorsese, it still offered a window into their long-running collaboration. Begun with 1973’s “Mean Streets” and stretching over nine feature films, it’s one of the most famous director-actor pairs in cinema. One of Scorsese’s other regulars, Leonardo DiCaprio, was among the full crowd, eager to see the legendary New York duo together.

Actor Robert De Niro (L) and director Martin Scorsese. “ T h e I r i s h m a n ,” which Netflix will release this fall, is their latest gangster film together, following “Mean Streets,” ‘’Goodfellas” and “Casino.” It’s based on the 2003 book “I Heard You Paint Houses” by Charles Brandt, which recounts the life of mob hitman Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran (played by De Niro). Al Pacino plays Jimmy Hoffa, whose disappearance some have traced to Sheeran. “It’s in the milieu of the pictures we’ve done together and are known for, in a sense, but I hope from

a different vantage point,” said Scorsese. “Years have gone by and we see things in a special way, I hope.” Though its release is months away, “The Irishman” — one of Netflix’s biggest-budgeted films yet — has already become the new flashpoint of the ongoing battle between Netflix and movie theaters. The major chains have refused to play releases that don’t abide to the traditional exclusive 90-day theatrical window. Netflix has said that doesn’t serve the interests of its millions of members. FIH Men’s Series Finals: Italy shock Malaysia NUNTSA inter-campus sports meet

Kuala Lumpur, Apr 29 (Agencies): When Italians came to Kuala Lumpur early this month, no one gave them an outside chance of making it to the finals of the FIH Men’s Series Hockey Finals here. Ranked the lowest among participating teams, Italy not only defeated China (ranked 14th) but also shocked the hosts Malaysia (ranked 13th) to emerge the only unbeaten team in the pool matches so far. At present Italy is ranked 32nd by the FIH. Disappointment was writ large on the faces of Malaysians as they were expected to win the last game hands down after an absorbing 4-4 draw with China yesterday. But today, Italy, turned tables on the Malaysians, thanks to a brace by Augustin Nunez besides goals from Thomas Keenan and Sior Francois.

Augustin not only scored a brilliant field goal but also converted a penalty corner to expose Malaysia’s

vulnerability to penalty corners. Yesterday, China got all its four goals through penalty corners.Though

Malaysia got both its goals against Italy from penalty corners – Faizal Sara 26th minute and Rahim Razia

35th minute, but its inability to contain the Italians may have raised question marks over the coach Roeland Oltmans’ training of the home team. Malaysia finished behind Italy with just four points. It got better of China in final standings on goal average. Earlier China overcame stiff resistance from Brazil before winning 3-2.It was China’s first win the tournament. Now China and Malaysia from their pool along with Canada and Wales will take on each other in the playoffs to decide which of the two teams go to semis t play Italy and Austria. L. Su Yuan Lin and Dang Yeng scored for China against Brazil. Heijden van Der Yori and Joaquin Lopes were the scorers for South Americans.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s Geoffrey Koech and Vincent Kiprotich Kibet finished 2018 as the third and fifth fastest men over 10km in the world last year with 27:18 and 27:21 respectively, both times considerably faster than the TCS World 10K course record of 27:44 set by their compatriot Geoffrey

Koech, the fastest man in the field, hasn’t been in quite the same sparkling form in his two outings so far this year, both half marathons, but is hoping that dropping down distance will pay dividends but Kiprotich Kibet has already won one major 10km race this year, winning the famous Würzburger Residenzlauf in Germany in 27:35 on 14 August. New Delhi, Apr 29 (IANS): After being asked to explain his position in the alleged case of conflict for his role as Sunrisers Hyderabad mentor as well as a member of the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), former India middle-order batsman V.V.S Laxman has ripped into the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) and said that he had joined the CAC to serve Indian cricket and not to get engulfed in a conflict of interest mess. Laxman in the letter drafted by his lawyer has made it clear that the idea of serving Indian cricket even after retirement was the reason behind him joining the CAC and not to

stand in a position wherein his motive would be questioned. “It will be worthwhile to note that the reason I agreed to be a member was because of the various inputs we were originally tasked with contributing towards the sustained growth of Indian cricket. The opportunity to be involved meaningfully in India’s climb towards becoming a cricketing superpower post retirement was privilege enough for me to turn down the offer of remuneration of being a part of CAC. “The allegation of the complainant are baseless as we are in no manner selectors of either players or coaches and CAC is not a permanent body,” his mail read.

L o n d o n, A p r 2 9 (Agencies): There’s a fresh feel to the lineup for the Champions League semifinals this season, even if it contains some of the most storied teams and recognized players in Europe. This time there’s no Real Madrid, the three-time defending champion and Europe’s dominant team of this generation. Ac cording to AP, there’s no Cristiano Ronaldo, the superstar forward who has virtually made this competition his own in recent years. And there’s no Juventus, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid _ frequent last-four representatives of late. Instead, the survivors this year in the biggest club competition in world soccer are a surprise package from England, a blast from the past from the Netherlands, and two more aristocrats of the European game looking to end lean spells in the Champions League by their lofty standards, anyway. Few could have foreseen one of the semifinal matchups being Tottenham vs. Ajax. Tottenham hasn’t bought a player in the last two transfer windows,

Warner leads SRH 45-run win over Kings XI

David Warner plays a shot during the IPL cricket match at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, Monday. (PTI)

Hy d e r aba d, A p r 29 (PTI): David Warner signed off his IPL 2019 campaign in style, notching up his eight fifty of the season to help Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) take a step closer towards qualifying for the play-offs with a comfortable 45-run win over Kings XI Punjab here Monday. Playing his last match of season before heading home for World Cup preparations, Warner struck a belligerent 81 off 56 balls with seven fours and two sixes to complete his IPL

2019 campaign with 692 runs, the highest so far in the tournament. Chasing the imposing total, K L Rahul (79 off 56, 4x4s, 5x6s) made a valiant effort with the bat but lacked support from the other end as Kings XI were restricted to 167 for eight. By virtue of this win, Sunrisers have consolidated their fourth position in the table with 12 points from 12 games, while Kings XI are at 10 points from as many matches. Both the teams have two more matches to go with Kings XI still in

the hunt. Kings XI needed a brisk start but they didn’t get one, losing explosive Chris Gayle early. Gayle departed in the first ball of the third over, brilliantly caught by Manish Pandey off Khaleel Ahmed (3/40) with Kings XI scoreboard reading 11. Thereafter, Rahul and Mayank Agarwal (27 off 18) added 60 off 39 balls to take Kings XI forward. But just when the partnership was looking threatening, Agarwal was holed by Vijay Shankar off Rashid Khan (3/21) in the

Sterling, Parris win FWA award

Raheem Sterling and Nikita Parris have starred for Manchester City this season.

L o n d o n, A p r 2 9 (Agencies): Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and Nikita Parris have won the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year awards. Sterling, 24, took the writers’ men’s award with 62% of the vote after he was named Professional Footballers’ Association Young Player of the Year. Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk - PFA Player of the Year - was second. Parris, 25, edged Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema by 11 to 10 in the second stage of voting for the women’s award. Netherlands striker

Miedema was named PFA Player of the Year alongside Van Dijk on Sunday. Parris has helped City to the Women’s FA Cup final and featured in England’s successful She Believes Cup campaign. More than 400 FWA members voted in their award, with Sterling finishing more than 100 votes clear of Van Dijk, Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette, and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and David Silva all earned votes. Sterling becomes the first City player to win the

award since 1969, when Tony Book shared the honour with Derby’s Dave Mackay. As well as his 29 goals for club and country, the England forward was also praised for his public stance against racism, which has already won him other awards. The women’s vote saw Parris and Miedema clear after stage one of voting before the City striker narrowly took stage two, with England and Manchester City captain Steph Houghton finishing third. Parris, who joined City from Everton in 2015, was named in the PFA Women’s Super League Team of the Year on Sunday. Her 19 league goals and seven assists this season helped City to second in the Women’s Super League, behind champions Arsenal. The FWA praised the Liverpool-born forward for her role in helping City to victory in the Continental Tyres Cup and in reaching Saturday’s FA Cup final against West Ham. Parris was also praised for helping to set up qualifications in conjunction with Liverpool College.

Cannavaro steps down as China football coach Shanghai, Apr 29 (IANS): Italian coach Fabio Cannavaro has announced he is resigning from steering the Chinese national soccer team after just two consecutive defeats and said he would continue to focus on his role as the Guangzhou Evergrande Club’s manager. “Due to the respect I owe China, I feel it is necessary to announce that I decided to quit the coaching spot of Team China,” state news agency Xinhua reported the former Real Madrid defender as saying on Sunday. The 45-year-old explayer expressed his gratitude to the Chinese Football Association and the Guangzhou Evergrande Club, both of which “expected him to steer the national team and club simultaneously, but he still refused the proposal for family reasons,” Xinhua reported. Cannavaro said that a month ago, he had told his club that he wanted to focus his whole attention on the team’s performance in all competitions, reported Efe news agency.

Zidane apologises after Real Madrid lose

Rayo striker Adrian Embarba sends Real keeper Thibaut Courtois the wrong way from the spot.

L o n d o n, A p r 2 9 (Agencies): Real Madrid were stunned by La Liga’s bottom club Rayo Vallecano, who kept their slim hopes of survival alive. It is the first time Real have lost to a team bottom of the league since 2004. Boss Zinedine Zidane made eight changes to his team as he continues to experiment with his third-

placed squad, who have little to play for. Adrian Embarba scored the only goal for Rayo from a video assistant referee-awarded penalty following a Jesus Vallejo foul on Javi Guerra. The referee did not initially award a penalty. Real broke and Gareth Bale had a shot saved before the referee viewed the

incident on a screen and gave a spot-kick. Had Bale scored, it would have been disallowed. Embarba sent Thibaut Courtois, playing for the first time under Zidane, the wrong way in what proved to be the winner. He is now Rayo’s joint second top scorer this season with four goals. Their

Zinedine Zidane apologised and said he wished Real Madrid’s miserable season would end now after they were beaten by 19th-placed Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. Real Madrid’s response to Barcelona winning the title on Saturday night was to slip to a 0-1 defeat at Vallecas and fall 18 points behind La Liga’s newly-crowned champions. Zidane took over knowing Real Madrid’s title challenge was all-but extinguished but the difference to Barca then was 12 points while catching Atletico Madrid, now nine ahead, seemed achievable. “Today we did noth-

Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat (File)

New Delhi, Apr 29 (IANS): The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has recommended the names of Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. Current number one wrestler Punia recently stamped his authority on Asia after he won the Asian Wrestling Championships in Xi’an, China. Punia had last year won the gold medal in the 65-kg freestyle wrestling event at the Asian Games held in Jakarta. He defeated Japanese wrestler Takatani Daichi 11-8. Before that, he had also won the gold medal in the same category at the

Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. He overcame Kane Charig of Wales by Technical Superiority to clinch the gold. On the other hand, Vinesh became the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold in both Commonwealth and Asian games. At the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Vinesh won gold in women’s freestyle 50-kg event by defeating Canada’s Jessica MacDonald. In the 2018 Asian Games, she created history as she became the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold in the games by beating Japan’s Yuki Irie

in women’s 50-kg freestyle wrestling gold medal match. She also became the first Indian athlete to be nominated for the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards held in February 2019. Apart from Vinesh and Bajrang, the WFI has recommended Rahul Aware, Har preet Singh, Divya Kakran and Pooja Dhanda for the Arjuna Award while Virender Kumar, Sujeet Maan, Narendra Kumar and Vikram Kumar have been recommended for Dronacharya Award. Bheem Singh and Jai Prakash have been recommended for the Dhyan Chand Award.

Gomathi sets sights on Worlds, Olympics New Delhi, Apr 29 (Agencies): Gomathi Marimuthu might have become an overnight star with her gold-winning effort at the recently-concluded Asian Athletics Championship in Doha but she is now focussed on qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. According to Scroll. in. the athlete from a village near Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu finished on top in 800 metres. She now has aims to do well at the World Athletics Championships later this year. “My next aim is to perform well in the World Athletics Championships,” Marimuthu, an employee of the Income Tax Department told PTI. “I also want to run in the Olympics and am preparing for it. Now more and more people and the government is supporting me. I want to do everything possible to qualify for the Games in Tokyo. The aim is to qualify for the Olympics.” Marimuthu clocked a personal best time of 2:02:70s at the Asian championship, bettering her previous best of 2:03:21 that she had achieved at the Federation Cup in Patiala earlier

ing,” Zidane said. “From minute one until the end, at all levels. Sometimes you cannot score but today we did not even create chances, did not play at all. “We must be very angry. I am angry, because the image we gave off today was bad. I am responsible for this as well, not just the players. But we have to apologise for our performance today, all of us.” The gap widens between them and Barcelona, whose players had been dancing on the pitch at Camp Nou the night before and posing for photos with their children after wrapping up a fourth La Liga title in five years. Asked if he would like the season to end now, Zidane said: “Yes, but we have to play these three games and do something different. We cannot end like this. “It is about me as well, today what I did in the shape of the team, it didn’t work at all. We must respect football and what this club represents.”

this year. Marimuthu, daughter of a farm labourer, said the she would have recorded a better timing if it weren’t for those years that she lost due to injury and lack of support. “No one knew me before this. Now that everyone knows me I am getting support from various quarters including the Tamil Nadu government. I could have recorded a better time if I had not lost those years due to injury and lack of support,” she said. Recalling the tough days she had to endure when her father and coach passed away, the 30-year-old said that she kept going only because of her friend’s support. “The year 2016 was a tough one for me as I lost

my father and coach but my friend Francis Mary encouraged me and told me to continue the sport. Also, a groin injury meant I missed nearly two years,” she said. Her immediate goal is to do well in the inter-state athletic championship, to be held in Kolkata in July before the World Championships in Doha in September. “Now, I am feeling more confident after the win in Doha and next is the inter-state meet and then the big one [World Championships].” About ‘lucky shoes’ and making her father proud Marimuthu said her coach would devise her training schedules ahead of the World Championships. As for the controversy that

cropped up after reports emerged of her running with torn shoes, Gomathi said it was not the case, and the ones she had worn were “lucky shoes.” “I have heard this so many times,” Marimuthu said.” It is not like that. The pair I wore during the race were lucky ones. I am very sentimental about that pair so I used it for the final,” she clarified. Her mother, 52year old Rasathi, who works in a field, was overjoyed and said her village celebrated her daughter’s triumph. “Gomathi told me that she was going abroad to take part in an athletics meet and that she would call me after April 25. Till she won, I had no idea about her achievement. I am very proud that my girl from this small village has reached such heights with determination and hard work,” said Gomathi’s mother. Rasathi said her late husband had supported Gomathi a lot after she displayed interest in athletics from a young age. “My husband would have been very happy if he had been alive to see Gomathi win such a big prize. I am happy that she had realised his dreams,” she added.
