KO H I M A / I M P H A L / SHILLONG/GUWAHATI, APR 3: Nearly one thousand people have been rendered homeless after heavy rains coupled with hailstorm lashed parts of the North Eastern states since Sunday, killing at least two persons in Assam.

Met department has informed that thunder squall accompanied with hail and wind speed exceeding 50 KMPH was likely to occur in isolated places in all the Northeastern states excluding Sikkim on April 4 and 5.

In Kohima, tin roofs of a newly constructed house at Hospital Colony were

blown off by strong wind on Sunday night. The house was reportedly built for labourers of hospital construction works at Naga hospital Kohima.

Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) informed that there no official report of major damage in Kohima town. However, the NSDMA added that it had received some unofficial reports of minor damages.

According to sources, there was no report of casualty in Kohima.

For seven years, anyone who created a Twitter account automatically got an egg icon as their profile picture. “This was a playful way to reference how eggs hatch into birds that send all the Tweets you see on Twitter!” Twitter said in an online post. “Trolls” who created accounts just to fire off abusive comments were known to leave eggs unchanged as well. New profile icon is a generic silhouette of a person, slightly reminiscent of a small egg atop a larger one.

There were reports of damage caused to roofs of several structures including residences from Imphal East district. The entire Imphal East and parts of Imphal West districts experienced total blackout on Monday as high tension towers and electric poles were uprooted in several areas.

Meanwhile, water logging continued to submerge hundreds of houses even as water level of rivers in Imphal valley increased owing to incessant rainfall in catchment areas of the rivers.

DIMAPUR, APR 3 (NPN): Lotha Hoho (LH) has accused the state government of discrimination against Wokha district in the the distribution of funds for renovation and maintenance of road during the last three years 2014-17.

LH said that during the period, Wokha district was allotted Rs. 370 lakh which was much lesser than funds allotted to subdivisions. (See table on Road Fund Distribution for 2014 -2017) LH chairman Mhao Humtsoe and general secretary Er. Mhondamo Ovung questioned the state government and Lotha legislators as to what were the reasons for the “utter discrimination”?. They said that fund allocations with normal variations were understandable, but the variation was beyond logic.

LH also wanted to know on what basis the funds for the various years were distributed.

According to LH, if funds were distributed on the basis of area, Wokha with an area of 1628 sq kms, is fourth largest, after Kohima, Phek and Mon and on the basis of population, it has a population of 1,66,239 as per 2011 census, the sixth, after Dimapur, Kohima, Mon, Tuensang & Mokokchung.

Also, LH said if distributed on the basis of road length, Wokha has got one of the longest road lengths, with one National Highway (NH 61/2) and two state Highways, namely Wokha -Merapani road with a road length of 62kms and Wokha-Bokajan road with a road length of more than 94 kms.

The hoho also wanted to know whether government would allot fund to Wokha district for renovation and maintenance of roads? Since Wokha - Merapani road has recently been declared as NH (after having been neglected by the state govt for the last many years), the hoho asked the government why not renovate the Wokha - Bokajan road, which had been abandoned, after BRO left about a decade ago?

Delhi Metro on high alert after Russia blast New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI): Security measures in the Delhi Metro have been stepped up with commuters made to undergo a thorough frisking in the wake of an explosion in a subway train in Russia that killed at least 10 people.

Officials said the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), tasked to secure over 150 stations of the rapid rail network with a daily footfall of about 26 lakh people, has issued orders to exercise the “highest possible measure of alert” by strengthening regular security drills and undertaking pat-down (complete) search of the passengers.

They said all entry and exit points of

the Delhi Metro stations will be effectively secured in close coordination with the Delhi police and Metro authorities.

Special instructions, they said, have been issued to effectively and minutely scan the luggage of the commuters at all the stations, especially which receive a heavy passenger load and at inter-change stations like Kashmere Gare or Rajiv Chowk.

Intensive “sweeping” of the stations with the help of anti-sabotage gadgets and canine squads will be undertaken, they said, adding armed commando teams of CISF’s quick reaction teams will be on all-time alert.

State’s fiscal liability up by Rs. 8932 crore in 2015-16: CAG report

The salary expenditure of Rs. 3688.50 crore was 45.87% of revenue receipts during the year, it added.

Further, in a startling revelation, CAG report pointed out that the there were 41 cases of misappropriation, loss tec. involving government money amounting to Rs. 597.63 crore (upto March 31, 2016) on which final action was pending.

As on March 31, 2016 the cases of misappropriation, defalcation pertained to 15 departments, private firms and various other departments pending finalization, the report stated.

36.6 million data records breached in India last year New Delhi, Apr 3 (IANS): Nearly 36.6 million data records were compromised in India last year in 33 data breaches -- a 14 per cent rise as compared to 2015, a new report said on Monday, According to global digital security firm Gemalto’s ‘Breach Level Index’, identity theft and unauthorised access to financial data were the leading type of data breaches, accounting for 73 per cent of all data theft. Across industries, the technology sector had the largest increase in data breaches in 2016.

The healthcare industry accounted for 28 per cent of data breaches, rising 11 per cent compared to 2015. In 2016, SBI blocked millions of its debit cards as a precautionary step after some suspicious transactions were reported.

DIMAPUR: ICARAICRP (VC), Nagaland Centre, SASRD,NU under TSP (Tribal Sub Plan) adopted Hekheshe village and conducted a day-long training programme on “methods of composting and its application in vegetable production & mushroom cultivation as an enterprise” on March 24.

During the inaugural programme, publications on PRA of Hekeshe village and 6 bilingual folders on English and Nagamese on various topics were released by dean, SASRD, NU.

Lecture on the main topic was delivered by assistant prof., dept. of Agricultural Chemistry & Soil Science, Jurisandhya Barik Bordoloi and Dr. Narola Pongener, assistant prof., dept. of Plant Pathology respectively where practical demonstration on different composting methods and mushroom cultivation was carried out.

The training was attended by 75 farmer participants out of which, 20 farmers were selected based on their interest and participation during the train-

ing. Wrap up session was conducted by prof. Akali Sema Incharge TSP, ICARAICRP (VC) with vegetable seeds and spawn distribution to all the participants and tools distribution to the 20 selected farmers.

The exposure was an initiative of the staffs from GMS Thenyizumi with an aim to encourage young aspirations to get exposed

DIMAPUR,APR3(NPN): One-day programme was held on “adolescent girl’s awareness” organized by Rashtriya Madhayamik Shiksah Abhiyan (RMSA), District Education Mission Office (DEMO) Dimapur on Monday at URBC Hall, Nagarjan, Kuda Dimapur w i t h G D M O, Yo u t h Friendly Clinic, District Hospital Dimapur (DHD), Dr. T.Achila Lepden as resource person.

The programme was organized to create awareness among the pupils on the causes, symptoms, mode of transmission and the dangers associated with the disease and how to prevent it.

Speaking at the programme, Dr. Achila enlightened the audience on topics like female foeticide, safe motherhood, adolescent heath, which included personality development, physical and psychological changes, anemia, hygiene, say no to drugs, HIV AIDS and STI awareness.

District Disaster Management Authority (DDMAM), Mon handed over an ex-gratia relief of Rs. 4, 12, 700 to the family of late Mongroh who was killed during windstorm that hit Shangsa Village under Tizit Sub-Division on March 4. The ex-gratia relief was handed over by EAC Tizit in presence of DDMAM, DB, and village elders on April 1 at Shangsa Village. The ex-gratia relief was given by Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, Home Department, government of Nagaland as per the norms of assistance. (NP)

DIMAPUR: Phom Union Kohima (PUK) celebrated Monyu festival on April 1 at the residence of parliamentary secretary of Land Resources D e ve l o p m e n t , B. S. Nganlang Phom.

According to DIPR report, Nganlang exhorted the gathering to conserve and promote the rich cultural heritage saying that the main feature of Monyu was to show love and renewal

of affectionate feelings towards their married daughters or sisters by p r e s e n t i n g s p e c i a l ly prepared food to them.

Significance of monyu was delivered by Vankon Phom where he said that Monyu festival was celebrated in the month of April every year soon after the sowing season beginning from April 1 to 6. He also stated the significance of the festival for each day.

The highlights of the programme included invocation by Rev. Phomlee Va n p a s t o r, we l c o m e address and Monyu greetings by PUK president Dr. Longai. Traditional dance was performed by the Pongching Cultural troupe Kohima.

Screening camp on deafness held at Wokha DIMAPUR: The National Programme for Prevention & Control of Deafness (NPPCD), department of Health & Family Welfare, Wokha held a screening camp at Longsa village on March 31, Sanis village on April 1 and Wokha village on April 3.

Meghalaya PSUs incurs loss of nearly Rs 390 cr

Shillong, Apr 3: Meghalaya Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) incurred a loss of nearly Rs 390 crore as of September last year, but investment in such sectors has been on the rise.

In its report for year ending March 31, 2016, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) noted that 17 undertakings registered an aggregate turnover of Rs 935.69 crore according to their latest finalised accounts as of September 2016.

However, none of these PSUS were listed on the stock exchange.

The audit report said that the turnover was equal to 3.43 per cent of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of Rs 27,305 crore for 2015-16.

However, the auditors found that the working undertakings incurred an overall loss of Rs 389.50 crore according to their latest finalised accounts as of September 2016 as compared to the aggregate loss of Rs 220.92 crore incurred by the working undertakings as of September 2015.

“The increase in the aggregate loss of working undertakings was mainly on account of net overall losses of Rs 365.30 crore incurred by power sector

companies in 2015-16,” the report noted.

The audit report also found that as on 31 March 2016, there was one nonworking undertaking (Meghalaya Electronics Development Corporation Limited) which is defunct since 2006 and involved investment of Rs 4.72 crore.

It also stated that investments in non-working state PSUs do not contribute to the economic growth of the state.

Moreover, the report noted that as on March 31, 2016, the investment (capital and long-term loans) in 17 undertakings was Rs 4795.63 crore.

Of the total investment of Rs 4795.63 crore in the undertakings, 99.90 per cent was in working undertakings and the remaining 0.10 per cent in non-working undertakings.

The total investment consisted of 89.46 per cent towards capital and 10.54 per cent in long-term loans.

However, the report noted that investment has grown by 86.23 per cent from Rs 2575.05 crore in 2011-12 to Rs 4795.63 crore in 2015-16.

Further, the report said that during 2011-16, the thrust of undertaking investment was mainly in power sector, which has

increased by 91.06 per cent from Rs 2,249.78 crore (2011-12) to Rs 4,298.38 crore (2015-16).

Besides, the investment in manufacturing sector has also increased by 116.10 per cent from Rs 127.80 crore (2011-12) to Rs 276.17 crore (2015-16) mainly due to increase in the equity (Rs 80.06 crore) and long term borrowings (Rs 63.59 crore) of Mawmluh Cherra Cements Ltd during 2012-16.

Moreover, the report noted hat during 2015-16, out of 16 working undertakings, four earned profit of Rs 4.93 crore while 10 undertakings incurred loss of Rs 394.43 crore as per their latest finalised accounts as on September 30, 2016.

But the report observed that the main contributors to profits were Meghalaya Government Construction Corporation Ltd (Rs 2.96 crore) and Forest Development Corporation of Meghalaya Ltd (Rs 0.61 crore).

Those incurring heavy losses include the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (Rs 295.15 crore), Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Ltd (Rs 70.02 crore), Mawmluh Cherra Cements Ltd (Rs 19.07 crore) and the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (Rs 5.73 crore).

northeast 300 houses flattened in Barak Valley storm SILCHAR, Apr 3 (Agencies): Nearly 300 houses were flattened and 20 people injured when a severe hailstorm, accompanied by heavy rain, lashed Hailakandi and Karimganj districts of the Barak Valley on Sunday.

The hailstorm hit several villages of the Lala and Katlicherra circles in Hailakandi and the Ratabari, South Karimganj circles and Shonbeel area of Karimganj.

Most injuries occurred when houses were flattened in the storm or when uprooted trees crushed houses. While many of the injured were admitted to local hospitals, Maqbul Hussain Barbhuiya (50) of Lala was rushed to Silchar Medical Collage Hospital in a critical condition when an uprooted tree crushed his house.

The homeless families are now living under the open sky. While power and telephone lines are down in the areas, uprooted trees disrupted road communication in many areas. Soon after the calamity hit the region, the district administration pressed officials and police in the affected areas for rescue and to take stock of damages and losses. Meanwhile, an estimated 4,984 hectares of Boro rice crop and 118 hectares of vegetables owned by 13,000 families have been devastated due to incessant rain and hailstorm over past few days in Cachar district alone, said an official.

IMPHAL, Apr 3: Tribal people of Manipur will get benefits of various social welfare schemes under state tribal development and hill affairs department directly, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh informed members of Manipur Hill Journalists’ Union (MHJU) on Monday.

After a meeting with members of All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU), Singh met the members of MHJU in his office chamber.

During the meeting, the chief minister informed MHJU members that the new government has decided to directly deliver the benefits of various schemes for the tribal to the beneficiaries.

Concern ministers will go to the hill districts and hand over the benefits directly to the beneficiaries. If necessary, he will go personally to hand over the benefits to the beneficiaries, he assured.

Singh believed that if the social welfare schemes reached the people, particularly in interior hill areas, it would bridge the development gap between the hills and valley. Asserting that “Go to Hill” was his slogan to bridge the gap between hill and valley, the chief minister sought the cooperation of the media of the state, particularly working in hill areas to fulfill his government’s commitment.

During the meeting, the

chief minister also emphasized on the role to be played by media in maintaining peace and harmony among the different communities in the state. “Whatever the diversities among different ethnic communities in the state we are one and the media has to play a great role in bringing together all the communities”, he asserted.

Stating that transparency will be there in his government, the chief minister further appealed MHJU members to give their suggestions so as to regain the trust among “ourselves”.

Responding to demands of the hill journalists submitted in the form of a memorandum, the chief minister immediately summoned and instructed chief engineer of state PWD to take up the renovation work of the existing press club in Churachandpur. He further instructed the chief engineer to take up immediate step for allotment of land and establishment of a press club for the MHJU in Imphal.

To another demand for establishment of press club in other hill district headquarters, the chief minister suggested them to request the respective district administration to provide a room to the union in the mini secretariats of the respective districts. Kejriwal fears EVM tampering, wants Delhi polls postponed

New Delhi, Apr 3 (IANS): Alleging again that EVMs can be tampered with, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday blasted the Election Commission and said Delhi’s civic polls should be postponed if need be to use the paper ballot.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader’s attack came a day after the poll panel denied his earlier accusations of EVM tampering and asked him to introspect as to why his party lost the Punjab and Goa polls.

Referring to an Electronic Voting Machine in Madhya Pradesh found to have been manipulated, Kejriwal said this came from Uttar Pradesh and it raised questions about the BJP’s sweeping win in assembly polls in that state.

He said all the 300 or so EVMs to be used in the April 9 by-election in Madhya Pradesh had come from Govindnagar constituency in Uttar Pradesh and demanded to know what was so special about those machines.

NIA issues fresh summons to Zakir Naik NEW DELHI, Apr 3 (agencies): As the controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, being probed under terrorism charges, defied the NIA summons once again, the agency has once again issued fresh summons asking him to appear before it on April 17.

This is the third time in last one month NIA has issued notice to Naik but there is no sign of him willing to come to India and join the probe. Earlier, he was asked to join the probe on March 14 and then March 30.

Sources say that they may approach the court soon and issue a warrant against him, which will be served to him through ministry of home affairs and external affairs, if he chooses to once again not appear on April 17.

Naik is on the run and is being probed by NIA for allegedly spreading communal hatred and inciting others through his speeches to commit terror acts. His now banned NGO Islamic Research Foundation even

The AAP leader asked the Election Commission to make public the software used in the EVM machines along with the details of the company that manufactures chips used in these machines.

He also asked the Election Commission to hand over to the AAP the faulty EVM in Madhya Pradesh for 72 hours. “We have experts who will check if the chip can be rewritten or not.

“The software in the chips can be changed. This is happening on a large scale.”

Raising the issue of VVAPT machine purportedly dispensing slips only with BJP symbols in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district, Kejriwal demanded a thorough probe into the incident.

“Whatever happened in Bhind, raises big questions on the electoral process. We demand EC to release the EVMs so that it is open to scrutiny, we will investigate,” Kejriwal said at a press conference in Delhi.

The Delhi chief minister was quick to point the finger at the BJP and urged the EC to examine the sanctity of the voting machines, which he caimed had been tampered with at “microchip” level.

“With the kind of political statements coming from EC, I guess they should be a part of our political affairs committee,” the AAP chief ribbed.

Bengal BJP to weed out inactive party members KO L K ATA , A p r 3 (agencies): Even as 40 BJP leaders from Delhi will cover all 42 Lok Sabha constituencies of Bengal before next year’s panchayet elections, the state leadership has decided to identify and oust inactive party members from the organisation.

BJP state secretariat member and senior leader Ritesh Tiwari told ET on Sunday that the leaders would start visiting Bengal from April 6.

The two-day state committee meeting of the party will be held in Burdwan from April 22 when the process of identifying inactive members will start. It is learnt that some of the visiting leaders would attend the two-day session.

“We are constantly receiving requests from leaders of different political parties as well as from common people who want to be our members... We would not allow those who have taken our membership but don’t attend any of our programs, to be in our organisation.

We will trace them and oust them from our party,” Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh said.

Ghosh said they have decided not to call two of their invitee members — singers Bappi Lahiri and Arati Mukherjee — in their state committee meetings.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras came in a close second.

Despite political controversies, Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was ranked as high as number six and Jadavpur Universty was ranked at number 12 in the university rankings announced by the Union human resource development ministry (MHRD) today.

“JNU and Jadavpur University didn’t get rankings for Afzal Guru or anti-India slogans but for the good work done by students,” HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said after releasing the list. He was referring to the controversy over a protest organized last year in JNU against the 2013 hanging of Afzal Guru, that drew charges of sedition on

The ranking of 100 institutes was conducted by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) which comes under the MHRD. lncluding IISc, eight institutes from Karnataka found a place among the top 100. African envoys slam India for racist attacks

N EW D ELHI , A p r 3 (agencies): African envoys today severely criticized India for taking no measures to deter or to properly condemn the “xenophobic and racial attacks” against Africans in the country.

They also said they plan to call for an independent investigation into the attacks by the Human Rights Council and other Rights bodies.

‘The Heads of African Mission Accredited to India’ conveyed this criticism in a press statement dated late last week, after they held a special meeting called to discuss last Monday’s savage attack on four students from Nigeria in the Delhi suburb of Noida. Last Thursday, India refused to categorise the attacks on Africans in Greater Noida as racial and said that pending an investigation it is not correct to draw a conclusion on “the nature and the reason” of these acts. The African envoys minced no words in calling the attacks racial.

MCD polls: High court refuses common symbol to Swaraj India NEW DELHI, Apr 3 (agencies): The Delhi high court today rejected Yogendra Yadav-led Swaraj India’s plea for allotting a common symbol to its candidates in the upcoming municipal elections.

A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Chander Shekhar said that allotting them a common symbol for this MCD election would tantamount to disturbing the ongoing election process.

“We are not inclined to issue any interim order for a common election symbol to applicant (Swaraj India) in the ensuing municipal elections,” the bench said, adding that the interim order is tentative and would not be considered as final opinion.

MCD elections will be held on April 23.

It said the matter required consideration whether the registered and unrecognised party should be given a common symbol or not. The court has now listed the matter for further hearing on the pending writ petition on July 18.

The court’s interim order came on Swaraj India party’s interim application seeking common symbol for the MCD polls, for which today is the last date of filing nominations.

It said that granting interim relief would cripple the entire election process.

Somali pirates hijack Indian commercial ship MUMBAI,Apr 3 (agencies):: A cargo ship with 11 Indian crew members on board has been hijacked by pirates off the Somalian coast, officials from the Directorate General of Shipping said on Monday. “It is not a big ship but a dhow. It was hijacked yesterday and is now sailing towards the shore of Somalia,” DGS Malini Shankar said. The Indian-flagged ship was on a voyage from Dubai to Yemen when it was hijacked, she said, adding that it had 11 Indian crew members on board. Shankar said the pirates are interested in the cargo on the ship and have not put forward a ransom demand so far, adding that the details of the cargo are not known yet. There is a possibility of the vessel being released without the cargo once it reaches the shore this evening, she said. Instances of Somali pirates striking+ have come down considerably over the past few years, helping India convince the insurance bodies to do away with a high-risk premium the trade was paying.

Five children drown in Bihar

Patna, April 3 (IANS): Five children drowned in a village pond in Bihar’s Kaimur district on Monday, police said. The incident took place in Budhdha village when village residents had gathered near the pond to offer prayers as part of a local festival, and then bath in it. “After the adults returned home, the children jumped in the pond for a bath but five of them drowned,” police said. According to police officials, the victims were of age between 5 to 12 years. The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to family of the victims.

Demonetisation fraud: Court bars media reporting DELHI, Apr 3 (agencies): A Delhi court has barred the media from reporting a case involving two bank officials and another person for alleged irregularities relating to the conversion of old currency and supply of new notes.

According to court sources, the additional sessions judge has orally barred media from reporting the matter after the counsel for the accused alleged misreporting in the case.

Sources said the judge has also asked the advocates associated with the case not to brief mediapersons on any development in the matter.

The court had earlier taken cognisance on the charge sheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against accused 32-year-old Vineet Gupta, then branch manager in Axis Bank’s Kashmere Gate branch here, 33-year-old Shobit Sinha, then manager (operations) in the bank, and Rajeev Kumar Kushwaha, suspected to be the mastermind behind floating of shell companies.

The three accused are lodged in judicial custody.

This was the first charge sheet, called prosecution complaint by the agency, filed in money laundering cases resulting from demonetisation against officials of the Axis Bank branch here and others.

Mamata demands probe into alleged EVM tampering Kharagpur, Apr 3 (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday demanded a probe into the alleged tampering of EVMs in the recently-concluded Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

“You can’t win elections every time by hijacking EVMs. I didn’t contest but had I done so, I would have counted from one to ten. Those who had contested the elections, should have demanded a probe.

“I think there should be a probe. Even the ones that were used in the polls, they should be subjected to a sample survey,” Banerjee said here at a public rally.

The Trinamool Congress supemo also slammed the central government’s decision to lower the interest rate in small savings scheme by 0.1 percent.

“This is why chit funds flourish. There are no chit funds in our regime. One day CPI-M, Congress and BJP will have to answer for them,” she said.

Soon after the results

of Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls were declared, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati had alleged that the EVMs were tampered with.

Other opposition parties, including the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), sought a probe by the Election Commission after an EVM malfunctioned during an official demonstration ahead of the by-elections in Ater and Bandhavgarh assembly constituencies in Madhya Pradesh.

The Cong ress had asked the Election Commission urging it to revert to the system of paper ballot if political parties were not convinced about the credibility of the EVMs. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also urged the ECI to investigate the cases of faulty EVMs to ascertain if they were tampered with to favour the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the just-concluded assembly elections in Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Goa.

merican mainstream media, both print and electronic, appear to have lost their way after getting it all wrong by predicting a huge win for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in the November 2016 US presidential election. The elitist media houses promoting liberalism and big business and the Washington power establishment with garnishing of LGBT, black caucus and leftist socialists- all combine together in an American style Khichdi.

Trump won handsomely and along with Hillary, the American mainstream media and all the above vested interest groups also lost. Today, the American media due to its blatant support for Hillary and an Anti-Trump bias throughout the primaries till the campaign; have lost their reputation and today, the rate very poorly among American citizens. However, despite being handed what amounts to a vote of no confidence from American voters, the news media do not appear to be ready to return to objectivity any time soon. In fact, the media’s coverage of Trump has only become more negative and hostile since Election Day, as Democratic-leaning pundits and journalists attempt to delegitimize the Trump presidency. The American media has gone on frenzy searching for ghosts in reports of Russia’s alleged hacking into the Democratic National Committee website. Although there is no credible evidence to suggest that Russian interference had swayed the outcome of the election, the media has used the story to insinuate that Trump may have been elected with help from the foreign power. Various television news programs also used reports of alleged Russian election meddling to cast doubt on the legitimacy of a Trump presidency. The media elite’s eagerness to delegitimize the Trump presidency was most evident when CNN and BuzzFeed reported on a suspect intelligence report that claims Russia holds compromising information on Trump which could be used for blackmail. Buzzfeed’s publication of the unverified dossier, which contained salacious allegations against Trump, was roundly criticized, even by some in the establishment media, such as the Atlantic and Vox. In a recent interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bob Woodward of Watergate fame referred to the dossier as a “garbage document” that should never have been published. All the mainstream media appear to have convinced themselves but without any shred of evidence, that Putin helped Trump to win the US presidential election. Any mention of Russia even as a cursory mention by any from the establishment would make the American mainstream media grab everything to speculate on the Russian connection.

With some Hollywood stars and other Democrats taking to the streets, the media has put across the message that Trump is Putin’s puppet and therefore, has to go. Thus, presently the American mainstream media readies itself to raise the pitch for impeaching Trump. The massive influence of the American mainstream media is spread out worldwide even including India where some channels faithfully toe the anti-Trump line. Trump was voted by the people, who despite all the concocted stories and innuendo in the media, decided he spoke for the ignored middle and lower class Americans and the traditional values that has made America great. Trump may not be the ideal president or lacking the temperament needed but it is only right that he should be allowed to run his government and if he makes mistakes then he should be criticised.

But now they are hidden from your eyes. —Luke 19:42 Jesus entered Jerusalem triumphantly and the city was stirred to its very foundations, but a strange god was there– the pride of the Pharisees. It was a god that seemed religious and upright, but Jesus compared it to “whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness” (Matthew 23:27).

What is it that blinds you to the peace of God “in this your day”? Do you have a strange god– not a disgusting monster but perhaps an unholy nature that controls your life? More than once God has brought me face to face with a strange god in my life, and I knew that I should have given it up, but I didn’t do it. I got through the crisis “by the skin of my teeth,” only to find myself still under the control of that strange god. I am blind to the very things that make for my own peace. It is a shocking thing that we can be in the exact place where the Spirit of God should be having His completely unhindered way with us, and yet we only make matters worse, increasing our blame in God’s eyes.

“If you had known….” God’s words here cut directly to the heart, with the tears of Jesus behind them. These words imply responsibility for our own faults. God holds us accountable for what we refuse to see or are unable to see because of our sin. And “now they are hidden from your eyes” because you have never completely yielded your nature to Him. Oh, the deep, unending sadness for what might have been! God never again opens the doors that have been closed. He opens other doors, but He reminds us that there are doors which we have shut– doors which had no need to be shut. Never be afraid when God brings back your past. Let your memory have its way with you. It is a minister of God bringing its rebuke and sorrow to you. God will turn what might have been into a wonderful lesson of growth for the future.

ot so long ago, the 16th century philosopher, Rene Descartes described animals as red-blooded machines without thoughts or wishes. We have come a long way since then. Step by step scientists have discovered intelligence, self-will, ego and emotions in all animals, even insects.

At every point these discoveries have been challenged, again and again, and when the doubters finally cave in, in the face of overwhelming evidence, they leave a ‘But’ at the end. Something that animals do not have.

One of the biggest ‘buts’ was Complex Emotions: kindness, pity, surprise, empathy, cowardice, courage,amusement, pride, depression, anticipation, shame, modesty, caution, patience, anger, composure, stress, envy, jealousy, goodwill, disgust, regret. The ability to tell lies.

One by one experiments have shown that animals possess all these complex emotions. In the book, The Bonobo and the Atheist, for example, primate expert Frans de Waal proves that non-human animals can be inherently good, caring, and even, in our definition, moral.

In a famous 1958 experiment, hungry rats that were only fed if they pulled

a lever to shock their littermates, refused to do so, showing that the rodents have a sense of empathy and compassion for their fellows.

Scientists at the University of Chicago enclosed some rats in small, confining enclosures—like transparent coffins. The tiny prisons could only be opened from outside. The scientists discovered that free rats would go out of their way to release their trapped comrades.

The rats even did this when tempted by chocolate chips—a favourite food of both rats and human beings.

The free rats would resist these treats until after they released the trapped rats.

Then both would share the reward. So, rats turn out to be nicer than most humans – certainly nicer than the ones who experiment ceaselessly on them.

In a study by Steiner and Redish in 2015, rats showed that they could feel regret when not choosing a better available option.

Jealousy describes the negative thoughts and feelings of insecurity, fear, and anxiety that occur when an interloper threatens an important relationship. Jealousy requires the cognitive ability to determine selfesteem and weigh the rival’s threats.

In a study by Harris et al, scientists adapted a paradigm, from human infant studies, to examine jealousy in companion dogs. They had people lavish attention on objects, one of which was a realistic-looking stuffed dog that barked and whined, in front of their companion dogs. The interactions, and the dog responses, were recorded and analysed. Nearly all of the dogs pushed at either the stuffed dog or the owner and almost a third attempted to get between the object and their owner.

Significantly, they did

not exhibit these behaviours to the same degree when the object of affection was not dog-like!

Empathy is the capacity to recognise and react to emotions that are being experienced by another. Reimert et al in Physiology and Behaviour, 2013, correlated a number of behaviours in pigs with positive (feeding and group housing) and negative (social isolation) events. They demonstrated that when one pig was happy with his surroundings, it had the effect of lightening the mood of other pigs.

But when one pig was kept badly, and it reacted negatively to its surroundings, all the pigs reacted in the same way. The effects were not just limited to visible behaviour. Even cortisol levels in the pigs’ saliva confirmed their emotional state. The pigs were thus clearly demonstrating empathy.

My view on Kahuto Chishi Sumi article ‘An address to my fellow Sumis’

really do appreciate the write ups of Kahuto Chishi Sumi on various issues confronting us, which had always been a great beneficial for my academic consumption enabling me to broaden my knowledge.

I would like to thank the writer for his recent article, “An address to my fellow Sumis”, as it had brought to my notice about my customs and traditions which I was not aware of it. I am also grateful for your act of extending your personal apology, for the act which you are not responsible but only on the virtue of those act committed by your tribesmen.

Which I would say, you had shown a sign of great maturity and a good human being.

However, going through your article, there had been some passage, which had made me to pause, rewind and stop. First of all, the theory on Sumis reckless behaviour, which you had agreed upon, is very much convincing. However, our tradition based on oral without any written records, is very doubtful to say that it is the only theory. At the most what we can say is that, many agreed upon this theory. On the other hand, if we had to agree upon that, this is the only theory but still then it was the need of time and circumstances of those days. Where bringing enemy head or doing some act of valour was honoured and labelled as a hero and he gets his reward in the form of bride or other. With the passage of time, the society had undergone lots of social changes and the Sumis had also well adapted to these changing circumstances. Today some of those act cannot be termed as hero but will be considered as criminal act inviting severe punishment, which not only the Sumis but all the Naga communities knows and had changed according to it.

This brings me to what you had said that, (I quote), “....Sumis have developed, not a genetic trait, but the behavioural trait of showing off ” (unquote). Any act of intimidation, assault or murder is a criminal act, which is done solely to harm the other, even to the extent of killing with the motive and interest known to them. And if the criminal does commit an act just to “show off ”, then I think he/she would be better know by the name of “psychopath”, a person having some serious mental problem, which has nothing to do

by Kahuto Chishi, akukau(chief) of Hevishe village. Dear sir, I am always thrilled to read your articles of wisdom in local dailies every now and then. I thank you for your concern about Nagas not forgetting your advice to fellow Sumis.

But I am addressing you by the title akukau with reference to Sumi Kukami Hoho resolution on 22nd March 2017, which replaced the title of G.Bs with the title “akukau” meaning “chieftain” or “chief ” in English. Sir, I also believe that a Sumi village chief leads his people

with the customs and traditions. To link these criminal acts to the traditional practice, dragging the entire Sumi community, don’t it demean the Sumi customs and traditions. I think it’s a very narrow outlook to my community customs and traditional practice.

Secondly, what you said, (I quote), “...at least in towns, if not the villages of Nagaland, must realise that those days are dead and gone.” (unquote). Would it mean that, the Sumis in villages still practice that age old practice of showing off or you acknowledge those practices in villages but not in town. While interpreting your words I understood that, “showing off ” is a behavioural trait and it’s not a genetic, and since human being changes their behaviour according to time and circumstances, for which, from that age to the present age, there had been lots of social transformation and along with it the behaviour of Sumis had also undergone lots of changes to suit with the changing time and circumstances. Hence, the Sumis still had that behavioural trait does not arise here, as it had been dead with time and even the act of those few Sumis which had been in question has nothing to do with the age old behavioural practice of Sumis, it is just a criminal act if found guilty by the law enforcing agencies. Had it been the reckless behaviour of Sumis as genetic trait, then maybe it would had been different.

Again I quote, “this is the day and age when you attract members of your opposite sex with your intellect and dependability, not your brawn and bravado.” (unquote). Yes what you had said is very true and I think today no Sumis go showing off around particularly indulging in criminal act to attract opposite sex. I quote again, “....how strong and tough...we can only beat up a few people at a time....but our intellect grows and our dependability strengthens with the passage of time.” (unquote). Would the mention writer agree to if we can beat up large people at a time or he encourages mental dominance over physical dominance over the other. What I would like to say here is that, any degree of intimation or violence inflicted upon the other cannot be justified and it should be condemned by all. So also, all

communities which comprise Naga tribe are equal and one should develop ones mental ability for its own good, for its own community and for the Naga society at large and should not use that to dominate the other communities. Quoting again, “I want you to remember that Dimapur is not Zunheboto..... so Dimapur does not belong to us.” (unquote). These words had made to think that, do we Sumis mistreat other Naga communities staying in Zunheboto or its okay in Zunheboto and since Dimapur is inhabited by various communities for which we Sumis cannot behave in a same manner as we do in Zunheboto. I think the Sumis residing in Zunheboto is projected in a very poor manner here. Lastly, when the mention write said, (I quote), “God save our Nagaland.” (unquote). Had it been an article on some general issues, I would had thought, may be save our Nagaland from corruptions, favouritisms, tribalism etc but looking at the contents of the article, I wonder what the writer would have meant by that, is it save our Nagaland from the Sumis reckless behaviour or what else the writer would had meant. Any criminal is also a human being, for which he/she will belong to one other race, tribe, community and religion but that should lead to question the customs and traditions of the particular community to which he/she belong and dragging the whole community to shame just for an act of an individual or few individuals.

However all said, without an iota of doubt, what I had thought or posed questions to the said writer, I know he didn’t present his article in that way. But since, this article was out for public consumption, for which I don’t want some few individuals to get some wrong misconception about the Sumis. Only thing here was that, a little bit careful and proper arrangement of usage of words was needed here (but this doesn’t mean I am perfect in it). At the end, Kahuto Chishi Sumi article was very good and me as a Sumi it was very thought provoking article which really gave me the time to retrospect and introspect. Do keep writing.

Dear sir, as you understand that, Sumis have equally paid the price in blood, by means and by misery (hardships) to establish more than 155 plus official and unofficial Sumi villages in Dimapur. Dear sir, I agree with your opinion that Sumis as a majority tribesmen of Dimapur

should be an example to be better citizen in all fields of life be it yeoman services to society, civic bodies, also safeguarding the rights of other coexisting fellow brothers. Dear sir I agree Sumis should shed their ills and follow the policy of “live and let live” not only in Dimapur, but also in Zunheboto or elsewhere. But dear sir, with no offence, I believe Our Dimapur equally belongs to Sumis as it belongs to every Naga and Indians. Have you heard of the expression ‘rolling your eyes.’ It is something that humans do (I do it often) to express annoyance combined with frustration at a situation.

In a study by Sandem and Braastad,commercial dairy cows were food-deprived, and then either allowed access to food, or kept in a frustrating position where they could smell and see food, but not gain access to it. Behaviours thought to be associated with a negative emotional state and the cow’s percentage of visible eye white were recorded during the study. All food-deprived cows showed at least one

of these behaviours: aggressiveness , vocalisation, and head shaking. None of the fed cows had this. But even more interesting: the percentage of white of the total visible eye area was larger than normal in the fooddeprived cows, gradually increasing until 4 minutes after test starts, while it was lower than normal in the cows that were fed.

It is incredible to me there is still a debate over whether animal emotions are different from humans.

If you watch mammals, or even birds, you will see how they respond to the world.

They play. They are frightened when there’s danger.

They relax when things are good. It seems illogical for us to think that animals might not be having a conscious mental experience of play, sleep, fear or love, or any of the emotions in between. Animals have very similar survival circuitry: for example, the brain regions that tell an animal to run away from a threat are the same, even if that animal runs on two legs, four legs or takes flight. How can mindset of Nagaland be changed?

he Governor has said, Chief Ministers-Chubatoshi Jamir, Neiphi Rio, TR. Zeliang has said in the Public for a good number of times, and Minister Yitachu also said the Mindset in Nagaland should be changed.

But ‘How could the Mindset of the State be changed?’ Nagaland is unable to change even the Mindset of the Womanfolks, our VIP Leaders do not know how the change could be done. Reverends and Pastors teach umpteenth number of times in the Pulpit that Christians must change into ‘New Creature’.

But they too have not shown how to change Nagaland’s Mindset and many Christians in Nagaland are still the same old creature!

It is VIPs, Teachers, Thinker, Writers, the Church and Leaders of the People as ‘Role Models’ of the Society that have the greatest chance to impact the change the Mindset of the People.

One day an elderly Citizen from Chakhroma Area opined to me through the Phone that nothing seems to be changing in the New Team in the Government. I replied: “No, except that the same Trade of how to enrich and pursuit of the old trade of Self Interest continues”.

The present Chief Minister got a very good chance to start a New Earth and a New Haven to turn the Mindset of Nagaland in a good direction.

One Citizen said if the CM had not alloted portfolio to his Son, it would have created a small but very significant impression on the Public and Nagaland would have at least learned an example of good political Ethics.

I agreed to this thought, in fact I added, “if the new CM on his ascending to the Chair, had made a public anouncement that he would not go for Re-Election after his Term expires in August this Year. The announcement would have electrified the mentality of the whole of

Nagaland for a New Journey and the CM would have got unprecedented Moral Authority to rein in the selfish Politicians”. It would have been an exemplary Lesson of political magnanimity.

Nagaland seems blinded with our own stubborn and national self-righteous political arrogance. We have become so dependent and defensive in our National outlook that we naively consider even elected Nagaland Government as if it does not wholly belongs to the Naga and selfishly think of it only for exploitation. Our Political Leaders give us a clue to this pernicious attitude and they show no self-respect in taking the Governance of the State as something our own.

If this is not so, Ministers after Minister of Nagaland Government after Nagaland Government would not have regularly made Back-Door appointments of their Relatives or their expected Supporters for employment to nonexistent government Posts.

They know it very well that ‘Non-existent Post’ means No Money for their Pay! It appears the Government cannot change itself for the better and like everywhere else in the World; it is only strong Public Demonstration in the Street that changes the Government.

Public Demostration recently changed the Government of Nagaland too but it was by Violence and threat of Mass Violence where even the loud mouth in the Church declared “the Voice of the People is the Voice from Above” and gave its Blessings to the undemocratic Violent Force to bring down a democratically elected Government!

Pune, Apr 3 (IANS): Enraged at his advances being rebuffed, a college youth attacked and injured a BJP legislator’s daughter studying in a Pune college on Monday morning, officials said. The attacker has been arrested.

Accused Rajendra Bakshi, 23, accosted the 22-year-old daughter of a Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Yavatamal district and attacked her with a sharp weapon around 8 a.m. outside the Balaji Institute of Modern Management (BIMM).

The city police said the young girl was on her way to college from her hostel. Some passers-by caught hold of the attacker and handed him over to the police in Wakad area of Pune.

Both Bakshi and the young girl are students of the college and she had rebuffed his advances to her.

At the end of the September quarter about 15% or Rs 13,000 crore, of SBI’s home loan book was linked to MCLR while 40% of its overall loan book is linked to the new MCLR system.

New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI): All Income Tax department-related proceedings between the taxpayer and the taxman from the new fiscal will be conducted online, the CBDT today declared.

This is as part of its initiative to minimise human interface between the assessee and the Assessing Officer (AO) thereby reducing complaints of harassment and corruption.

A new link or window called ‘e-proceeding’ will soon be introduced on the e-filing website of the department, which is used by taxpayers to file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) at present. The website has been linked to the internal online business application portal of the tax department so that the Assessing Officer (AO) can undertake the new regime where a taxpayer will not have to visit the I-T office for regular issues like scrutiny issues and grievances related to his or her refunds or tax filing, among others. Silver fell however by Rs 250 to Rs 42,400 per kg due to reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers.

Traders said increased buying by local jewellers at the domestic spot market to meet the ongoing “Navratra” demand kept gold prices higher but a weak trend overseas capped the rise.

Globally, gold fell by 0.31 percent to Rs 1,245.30 an ounce and silver by 0.49 percent to USD 18.13 an ounce in Singapore.

In the national capital, gold of 99.9 percent and 99.5 percent purity rose further by Rs 20 each to Rs 29,270 and Rs 29,120 per 10 grams, respectively. The metal had gained Rs 190 in Saturday’s trade.

Miami, Apr 3 (IANS): Roger Federer won his third ATP World Masters 1,000 tourney at the Miami Open in Key Biscayne, Florida, once again defeating Spain’s Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 34 minutes.

The Spaniard this year has lost all three of his confrontations with the Swiss champ, including the Australian Open final.

“I’m moving up in the (Emirates ATP Rankings) and I just want to stay healthy,” Federer told ESPN on Sunday after the match.

“When I’m healthy and feeling good, I can produce tennis like this.

Kohima, Apr 3 (NPN): In view of the incessant weather, the fixture of the ongoing 4th 10-Northern Angami -1 T-20 Bash has been changed.

The fixture w.e.f.

Monday (April 3) would be pushed three days forward. April 3 matches will now be played on April 6 and so on.

The fixture pattern will be changed only if match falls on Sunday after which the pattern will resume the next day.

There will be no further postponement and hence, all the participating teams have been informed to keep note of the decision and come prepared for their matches accordingly.

As per the change, the final match will be played on April 15.

As for those matches which were washed out prior to April 3, teams will share points and no complaints will be entertained in this regard, informed convenor Kethosituo Elvis Mepfhuo.

APT28 attacks IAAF servers; Coe apologises

NEW DELHI, Apr 3 (Agencies): The governing body of global athletics (IAAF) has on Monday issued a statement saying that it has been a victim of a cyber-attack, which it believes has compromised athletes Therapeutic Use K Y M C

IAAF president Sebastian Coe apologised to the athletes for the lapse and said, “Our first priority is to the athletes who have provided the IAAF with information that they believed would be secure and confidential.

They have our sincerest apologies and our total commitment to continue to do everything in our power to remedy the situation and work with the world’s best organisations to create as safe an environment as we can.”

The attack carried out

by FANCY BEAR, also known as APT28, was detected during a proactive investigation carried out by Cyber Incident Response (CIR) firm, Context In-

formation Security, who were contacted by IAAF at the beginning of January to undertake a technical investigation across its systems.

The presence of unauthorised remote access to the IAAF network by the attackers was noted on 21 February where meta data on athlete TUEs was collected from a file server and stored in a newly created file.

It is not known if this information was subsequently stolen from the network, but it does give a strong indication of the attackers’ interest and intent, and shows they had access and means to obtain content from this file at will.

curity Centre (NCSC) and the Agence Monegasque de Securite Numerique (Monaco AMSN) and worked with Context to carry out a complex remediation across all systems and servers in order to remove the attackers’ access to the network. This was carried out and completed over the weekend.

IAAF have on Monday contacted athletes who have applied for TUEs since 2012 and provided with a dedicated email address to contact the governing body if they have any questions. For other concerns about the TUE applications, athletes can visit the official website - askiaaf.org, and submit the form and IAAF will respond their queries within 24 hours.

IPL 2017 to have eight opening ceremonies

New Delhi, Apr 3 (Agencies): The tenth edition of the Indian Premier League is set to witness as many as eight opening ceremonies before the action kicks-off in home cities of various teams.

The season opener between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 5, 2017 would be preceded by the ceremony. Similarly, it will happen for venues hosting their first game of the season.

This hasn’t happened in any of the editions so far and is certainly one of a kind plan. Speaking to a website, IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said, “it would be unfair to say it was my idea. All the members sat together and decided to have separate opening ceremonies across all the host cities to give the fans an opportunity to witness the opening of the 10th edition of the IPL live.”

Shukla further added that the theme of the ceremonies would be the culture and the tradition of the host cities and will continue to have performances from Bollywood stars. “The various segments of the ceremony will be on our culture, the culture and tradition of the host cities as also highlighting the high points from the last nine editions of the tournament.

We will also have performances from Bollywood stars, spirit of cricket signing etc” Shukla added.

Pathan eyeing India comeback through IPL Kolkata, Apr 3 (PTI): The upcoming Indian Premier League is not only about entertainment but it also carries a bundle of hopes for out-of-favour allrounder Yusuf Pathan, who is eying a comeback into the national team through the T20 event.

The 34-year-old Pathan is out of Indian team for more than five years now.

“The brand of cricket I’ve played so far, my only aim has always been to play for India again. IPL is one such platform where I can prove myself again,” the three-time IPL winning allrounder Pathan said at the launch of KKR Gallery at the Fanattic Sports Museum at Ecospace in New Town here today.

“To make a comeback for the country is the ultimate aim. It’s about making full use of the opportunity I get here.”

Recalling his India ODI debut, Pathan said the title winning effort for Rajasthan Royals in 2007 IPL was instrumental in impressing the national selectors.

“In fact, I started my career through IPL first season. Of course it’s about performing here and making a comeback,” said Pathan, who as part of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad.

West Vancouver, Apr 3 (IANS): Riding on forward Vandana Katariya’s stunning back-handed field goal, the Indian women’s hockey team beat Belarus 1-0 in their second Pool A match to enter the semi-finals of the Women’s Hockey World League Round 2 here. On Sunday, both the teams began on a strong note and were equally poised in the first quarter as they traded a penalty corner each but failed to convert successfully to enter the second quarter in a stalemate.

While India were quick to earn their second penalty

corner in the 21st minute, the opportunity could not be capitalised. Soon after, in the 22nd minute, India’s goalkeeper Savita Punia was brilliant in her efforts when she saved a hardstruck penalty corner to deny Belarus an early lead.

India, however, went into halftime with a 1-0 lead after Vandana’s sensational field goal in the 26th minute.

This was her second goal in the tournament so far.

While India continued to show good defensive skills to hold the lead, their attack was commendable too as they made brave forays

into the striking circle in the following two quarters.

India earned as many as three penalty corners in the third quarter but couldn’t convert. Belarus, on the other hand, came close to scoring in the 58th minute to equalise when they won a penalty corner but Savita continued to impress with a diving save to help India win the match.

India had earlier defeated Uruguay 4-2 in a thrilling shootout in their opening match on Saturday. The semi-final game is slated to be held on April 8.
