Meanwhile, the dead include eight from the District Reserve Guard (DRG), seven from the CRPF’s Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), six from the Special Task Force and one from the ‘Bastariya’ battalion of the CRPF,’ IGP (Bastar) Sundarraj P told PTI. The missing jawan belongs to the CoBRA unit, he said. He

said the anti-Naxal operation was launched based on the intelligence inputs about the presence of Maoists of Peoples’ Liberation Guerilla Army Battalion No. 1 led by Hidma, a Naxal commander involved in many deadly attacks on security forces. He rubbished reports of ‘a meticulously planned Naxal ambush’, adding, ‘Security forces fought bravely and inflicted a heavy blow to the ultras during the face-

off ’. Another senior police official said the Naxals, around 400 in number, were strategically positioned on a hillock in front of Tekalguda village and around it. “The Maoists drew the forces into an ambush with heavy gunfire and encircled the security personnel from three sides. A heavy gunbattle ensued in the jungles which are devoid of any foliage at present,” a senior official told PTI. Bullets rained from light machine guns and the Naxals also used low-intensity improvised explosive devices to mount the attack that continued for several hours. According to IANS report, over 1,000 personnel drawn from various units walked into a deadly trap of Maoists, purely on an unverified intelligence input that top ultra leader Madvi Hidma was holed up at a hilly site along with his colleagues.

DTFs asked to conduct random sampling, testing DIMAPUR, APR 4 (NPN): In view of the impending second wave of COVID19 pandemic and to assess the trend on COVID-19 transmission and prevalence in the community, State Health department has asked all district task forces (DTFs) to conduct random sampling and testing of high risk settings from time to time. As per the advisory issued by the principal director of Health & Family Welfare department, Dr Kevichusa Medikhru, the testing for risk groups include shopkeepers in crowded market,

shopping complex & business establishment; street vendors; drivers/operators of bus/taxi/auto rickshaws/ rickshaws; restaurant and hotel employees, teachers/ students of various institutions; inmates of hostels/ prisons; offices and faith leaders etc. in coordination with respective associations/ unions and authorities. For this the department has advised Rapid Antigen Test (RAT). However, all symptomatic RAT negatives to be mandatorily subjected to RT-PCR/Truenat tests, it added.

It also advised RTPCR/Truenat testing of all in-door patients upon admission in all hospitals and also random mobile testing at point of entries from time to time through RAT. The department stated that testing for such risk groups shall be free of cost. “During the sampling for random screening tests, the contact details of all close contacts such as co-travellers, customers, present, patient attendants, inmates, etc. are to be collected compulsorily, so as to ensure 25-30 such close contacts to be traced

for each infected person,” the advisory said. “Tracing and their isolation to be done in 72 hours. Subsequent testing and follow-up of all close contacts to be carried out,” it added.

Data of 553 million Facebook users leaked online New Delhi, Apr 4 (IANS): A hacker has posted the phone numbers and sensitive account details of nearly 533 million Facebook users-- about a fifth of the social networking platform’s entire user base -- including over 61 lakh Indian users which has been dumped on a public cybercrime forum. The leaked data includes Facebook ID numbers, profile names, email addresses, location information, gender details, job data, and other details. “All 533,000,000 Facebook re-

cords were just leaked for free. This means that if you have a Facebook account, it is extremely likely the phone number used for the account was leaked,” tweeted Alon Gal, CTO of security firm Hudson Rock. Facebook has confirmed the leak to The Record. “This is old data that was previously reported on in 2019. We found and fixed this issue in August 2019,” a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report on Saturday. With the data now entering the public do-

main, there is a real danger that this information can be widely used by cybercriminals for email or SMS spam, robocalls, extortion attempts, threats and harassment, etc. As Cambridge Analytics still haunts nearly 87 million users, including over 5 lakh users from India, this has come as the biggest ever leak of a social media platform. In January this year, reports first surfaced that the phone numbers of 533 million users were currently being sold via a bot on encrypted messaging platform

Telegram, which came from a Facebook vulnerability that was patched by the social network in 2019. According to a report in Motherboard, the person selling the database full of Facebook users’ phone numbers ($20 per number) lets customers lookup those numbers by using an automated Telegram bot. In December 2020, reports surfaced that a bug exposed the personal information like email addresses and birthdays of Facebookowned Instagram users. K Y M C

Nagaland Post, Dimapur MONDAY, APRIL 5, 2021

Befitting reply will be given to Chhattisgarh Naxal attack: Shah

Gandhi Vadra was also scheduled to campaign in three constituencies in Lower Assam but had to cancel the plan after coming in contact with a COVID-19 infected person. Rajya Sabha MPs Mallikarjun Kharge, Dr Nasir Hussain and Dr Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, his Chhattisgarh counterpart Bhupesh Baghel, former chief ministers of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, Kamal Nath and Ashok Chavan respectively, and AICC leader Randeep Singh Surjewala campaigned for the ‘Grand Alliance’ candidates.

‘Mahajoth’ or ‘Grand Alliance’ comprises Congress, AIUDF, Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF), CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML) Liberation, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM). AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, the BJP’s prime target in this election, carried out hectic campaigning for his party candidates along with those of his alliance partners. T h e A s s a m B J P ’s campaign trail was led by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, state unit chief R a n j e e t Ku m a r D a s s, NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has so far addressed the highest number of election rallies, and other ministers of the outgoing assembly. Sarma was barred by the Election Commission from campaigning for 48 hours from April 2 for allegedly making threatening remarks against BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary but he appealed for a review and subsequently, it was reduced to 24 hours. State Congress unit chief Ripun Bora, Lok Sabha MPs Pradyut Bordoloi,

Gaurav Gogoi and Abdul Khaleque led the party’s campaign along with AICC Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh. The BJP attacked Ajmal by accusing him of encouraging illegal immigration from Bangladesh, leading to “land and love Jihad”. The saffron party promised to tackle these issues by bringing in a legislation. The saffron party, besides speaking about development initiatives taken by the “double-engine government”, also attacked the Congress for aligning with the AIUDF. T h e C o n g r e s s, o n the other hand, focussed its campaign on the ‘five guarantees’ of not implementing CAA, providing government jobs to five lakh youths, 200 units of free power, raising daily wages of tea garden workers to Rs 365 and giving a monthly allowance of Rs 2,000 to homemakers. To reach out to the electors, several contestants played Holi and danced to the tunes of Bihu songs, as the state’s most important festival ‘Rongali Bihu’ is just a fortnight away.

he has neither received any membership letter from the BJP nor given any letter of dismissal or suspension of membership by the BPF. “I willingly without any pressure from any quarter, on April 1, 2021, joined the BJP. I have not received any notice, letter from BPF neither any letter from BJP in connection with the joining to BJP. At present, I am campaigning in favour of BJP supported UPPL candidate,” Basumatary told the EC. “The complaint has been examined in context of prevailing circumstances and all the materials and documents available on record and on the basis of the same, the commission is of the considered view that under the extant statuary provisions, the matter does not warrant any intervention at this juncture,” the EC said in its reply.

Itanagar, Apr 4 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh has been able to contain the spread of the pandemic due to the dedication of medical fraternity and frontline workers, and the ccoperation of people in strictly following COVID-19 safety protocols, Health and Family Welfare Minister Alo Libang said on Sunday. However, there should be no complacency in adhering to COVID-19 safety norms as the ongoing second wave of coronavirus, across the country, could peak by midApril as predicted by Indian scientists by using a mathematical model, the minister told PTI in an interview. Till April 3, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the northeastern state stood at 16,849, including 4 active cases, 16,785 recoveries and 56 deaths, Libang said, quoting the daily bulletin issued by state surveillance officer Dr. L Jampa.

G u wahat i , A pr 4 (PTI): Campaigning for the third and last phase of the Assam assembly elections ended on Sunday. The fate of 337 candidates, including NEDA convenor and state minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, will be sealed in EVMs in 40 constituencies on April 6. An array of national leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress’s Rahul Gandhi campaigned for their respective alliance candidates. The seats, spread across 12 districts including three in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), witnessed last- minute canvassing by candidates, including 25 women, before the end of campaigning. Modi, who had campaigned in all three phases, addressed two rallies at Kokrajhar and Tamulpur, both in BTR, and highlighted the signing of the Bodo Accord and development initiatives of the BJP. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, another star campaigner for the BJP, addressed a series of election rallies in Lower Assam

New Delhi, Apr 4 (PTI): The Election Commission on Sunday turned down a plea of the BPF to postpone polls in the Tamulpur constituency in Assam as its candidate has joined the BJP under inducement, and said under law adjourning election at this stage is allowed only if a candidate of a recognised party dies. The Bodo Peoples Front (BPF) had moved the poll panel alleging that its candidate from Tamulpur, Rangja Khungur Basumatary, joined the BJP on April 1 under inducement. The election in Tamulpur will be held on April 6 in the third and last phase of the Assam assembly polls. The Election Commission (EC) said it was not provided with any documentary evidence to suggest that Basumatary joined the BJP or that he was removed from the BPF, when it heard the

Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarmah during a public meeting in Hajo. (PTI) constituencies. He was scheduled to address three rallies on the last day of campaigning but had to cut short his visit to Assam and returned to New Delhi following the Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh. BJP chief J P Nadda, Union ministers Nitin Gadkari, Narendra Tomar, Jitendra Singh, Smriti Irani, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Anurag Thakur, and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also campaigned for the party. Rahul Gandhi visited the Kamkhaya Temple and addressed rallies at Chaygaon and Barkhetri seats, while his sister Priyanka

matter. The list of contesting candidates has already been finalised by the returning officer, according to the EC’s reply to the party. At this stage, an election can be adjourned or a recognised political party is allowed to change its candidate only in event of death of a candidate of that recognised political party, it said citing Section 52 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The candidate submitted before the commission that

Correspondent IMPHAL, APR 4: After a recent incident of alleged naked parading of drug users, a conglomerate of bodies of drug users in Manipur on Sunday demanded befitting action against rehab centres indulging in force pick- up of drug users. Drug Users Federation for Human Rights and Justice, a conglomerate of bodies working for the welfare and de-addiction of the drug users alleged that three drug users (recovering addicts) were apprehended by four members of Realize Rehabilitation Centre, Mongjam Chingjin and paraded naked in broad daylight on the pretext of searching for any drugs in their possession on March 31 last. The incident took place at Koubru Leikha in Kangpokpi district while the three former drug us-

G u waha t i / S u alkuchi/Sorbhog, Apr 4 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said a befitting response will be given to those responsible for the Naxal attack in Chhatisgarh at an appropriate time. He also said search operations are continuing in Chhattisgarh following the encounter. ‘’As far as the numbers are concerned, both sides have suffered losses and exact casualty figures cannot be ascertained immediately’’, Shah said, after cutting short his election campaigning in Assam. The home minister is flying back to Delhi to take stock of the situation. ‘’Our securitymen have lost their lives, we will not tolerate this bloodshed and a befitting reply will be given at an appropriate time’’, he added. Bodies of 17 of the 18 jawans missing after the encounter were recovered on Sunday, taking the death toll to 22, police said separately. Though Shah arrived at Sualkuchi, in Jalkubari constituency after addressing his first rally of the day, to

ers, riding on two different bikes, were returning to Imphal after enjoying holi festival at Koubru Leikha. Addressing a press conference here today, the victims who are former drug users alleged that they were suddenly stopped in the middle of the road by the members of the rehabilitation centre who came on a car (Maruti 800) without giving them any reason. They then began to search for any drugs in their possession. Not being satisfied with the mere search in their pockets, the members forcibly made them take off their clothes in the middle of the road. After no drugs were found in their possession, they allowed them to leave for their respective homes, the federation alleged. C o nve n o r o f t h e federation, Salam Berlin

campaign for NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma, he left without making any speech on learning of the Naxal attack. He took a helicopter to Guwahati enroute to Delhi to take stock of the situation. Before leaving, the home minister told reporters he was appealing to people to vote for Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure Sarma’s victory by a huge margin. He added that the vote would strengthen the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his work in Assam and the North East. Shah said that both Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Sarma are working to develop the state and ‘’we want this to continue’’. Congress had ear-

termed the incident as a gross violation of human rights and demanded that the concerned state social welfare department should take up befitting actions against the rehab centre. The convenor said that the federation said that the incident came to light after the victims lodged a complaint with them. Based on the complaint, a team of the federation visited the rehab centre on Saturday and met with the officials of the centre. He alleged that the centre was indulging in force pick up drug users and kept them in their custody in the name of providing drug treatment facilities much against the wishes and consent of the drug users and their families. The authority of the centre also gave the staff the liberty to physically assault any of the clients as and when desired, he

lier charged that there was discord between the chief minister and a key minister without naming them. ‘’This is a golden opportunity for the people to give BJP and our team another five years so that we can ensure a flood-free, developed Assam’’, he said. The Union Minister said that Sarma’s contribution in this development process is immense and as the convenor of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) , he ‘’is also needed for the development of the entire North East’’. He accused the Congress of beginning the election campaign in the state on the promise of protecting its identity and pride but ending up “by stating that AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal is Assam’s identity’’. ‘’I just want to ask that when Vaishnav saints Srimanta Sankardeva, Madhavdeva, brave Ahom general Lachit Barphukan and Bharat Ratnas Gopinath Bordoloi and Bhupen Hazarika are linked to Assam’s pride and identity, can Ajmal represent or occupy the same space, he asked rhetorically.

alleged. Berlin lamented that the federation had on many occasions brought up the matter of force pick up of drug users to the pertinent authorities of the state social welfare department and also other departments concerned while urging intervention on the prevailing issue and human rights violation of drug users community in and outside drug treatment centres. “As no necessary intervention was made till date, we will be compelled to take up stringent actions on our own accord, like closure of the rehab centres in such illegal activities. We will drag them to the court,” he said. Moreover, various forms of agitations including rally and sit-inprotest will be carried out to draw the attention of the authority concerned, he added.

87 pigs die in Mizoram village near Bangladesh border Cong lost the plot in Assam: Jitendra Singh

Aizawl, Apr 4 (PTI): More than 80 pigs died in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district over the last two weeks, triggering panic in the area that is near the Bangladesh border, an official said on Sunday. The 87 deaths, which happened in the Lungsen village, have caused losses to the tune of Rs 40 lakh, he said. “Though the cause of the deaths is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that

the animals died due to African Swine Fever (ASF),” said Lalhmingthanga, the Joint Director of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department. The first death was reported on March 21, following which veterinary officers were sent to the village to ascertain the cause, he said. As per the enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests

on tissue samples and serum samples, the dead pigs were confirmed free of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) and Classical Swine Flu (CSF), he said. The confirmatory test for ASF is yet to be done at the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Madhya Pradesh, Lalhmingthanga said. The preliminary test will be done at the College of Veterinary Science and

Animal Husbandry on Monday to ascertain whether the dead pigs are suspected to be infected with AFS, he said. The government has already sounded alert for ASF in the state and declared Lungsen village as an infected area with prohibitory orders clamped under CrPC Section 144 on April 2, the official said. Though the actual disease is yet to be confirmed, the measure is being taken

in accordance with ASF Prevention and Containment National Action Plan, he said. An investigation team led by Animal Husbandry and Veterinary (Disease Investigation and Epidemiology) Deputy Director M Zohmingthangi will visit Lungsen village on Monday to stake stock of the situation, he said. The team will collect tissue and blood samples to be sent for tests, the official said.

G u wahat i , A pr 4 (PTI): Union minister Jitendra Singh Sunday said the Congress has lost the plot and it is faced with the prospect of an imminent defeat in Assam as its leaders are in “a state of confusion and disarray”. Winding up the last day of the election campaign here, he said, while each of the BJP workers has been on the ground and among the people continuously and constantly for the last three months, the Congress lead-

ers came like tourists and left even before their presence could be felt. “The election result of May 2nd will also be an endorsement of the fact that the voter today, particularly the youth voter, is in favour of prioritisation of development agenda carried out by the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and rejects the politics of division on the basis of religion as propagated by the Congress,” Singh told PTI. He said a BJP victory

and the formation of its government for a second time in Assam is a foregone conclusion. “This is also a reaffirmation of the new norms of work and commitment established under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and carried up to the grassroots level by Home Minister Amit Shah. For the Congress party, it is difficult either to understand or to live up to these new norms,” said Singh, the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Softening of Himanta’s punishment raises ‘big question’ on ECI’s neutrality: CPI(M) G u wahat i , A pr 4 (PTI): Coming down heavily on Election Commission’s relaxation on campaign ban of BJP minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury on Sunday said there is a “big question” on the neutrality of the poll panel and it should clear the air on the issue. Addressing a press conference here, the veteran communist leader claimed the Congress-led Grand Alliance, of which CPI (M) is a constituent, is coming to power in Assam with huge majority and a common minimum programme will be finalised after the formation of the government. “There is a big question on Election Commission of India’s neutrality. We want the ECI to remove this question. It is not only the poll panel’s duty, but a

responsibility to the Constitution of India,” Yechury told reporters. He asserted that Sarma should have been disqualified for making the threatening statements against Bodoland People’s Front chief Hagrama Mohilary, but instead 48-hour ban on him from campaigning was reduced to 24 hours on Saturday. The ECI reduced the ban duration of Sarma after he tendered an “unconditional apology” and assured the poll panel that he would abide by the provisions of the model code. The Congress had approached the ECI demanding action against Sarma for his remark that Mohilary would be sent to jail through central probe agency NIA if he indulges in “extremism” with rebel leader M Batha. Yechury also slammed

Sitaram Yechury

another BJP minister Pijush Hazarika, who allegedly threatened two journalists of dire consequences on the day of the second phase of polling on April 1 for reporting controversial campaign speech of his wife, and wondered why the ECI is not taking any action. “There was a decision during all party meeting with the ECI that media should not be under pressure. During course of election, media must be protect-

ed from undue pressure and it should be allowed to work naturally,” he added. Like Model Code of Coduct, which is not a law but an understanding between the parties and ECI, this agreement of safety of media should also be strictly enforced, he said. Hazarika is contesting from Jagiroad constituency. In an audio clip telecast by Assamese news channel Pratidin Time, he was heard talking to the channel’s journalist Nazrul Islam and threatened him and another scribe Tulsi Manta of dragging them out of their homes, break their legs and make them “vanish”. Police registered two FIRs filed by the two concer ned jour nalists and merged them into one. The BJP minister has been issued a notice to appear before police and his

call recordings have been sent to forensic lab after seizing his mobile phone. Ta l k i n g a b o u t t h e poll prospects in Assam, Yechury said: “There is huge response to the ‘Mahajot’. We are seeing tremendous enthusiasm and spontaneity on the ground. It is now sure that Mahajot is forming the next government here.” When asked about the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) of the 10party opposition grouping, the CPI(M) leader said it will be finalised once the Grand Alliance is voted to power. The CPI(M) which has no legislator in Assam at present is contesting on two seats, which will go to vote in the final phase on April 6. Yechury also attacked the BJP for doing “communal politics” and appealed to the people to vote against

the ruling front in the remaining 40 seats of the third phase on Tuesday. “The BJP’s communal politics will effect Assam for coming several decades. It needs to be defeated at any cost. If we cannot defeat such politics, then the balance and harmony of Assam will be distorted forever,” he warned. Claiming that most of the 19 lakh people excluded from the National Register of Citizens in Assam are Hindus, Yechury questioned why the BJP is silent on them if the party is really concerned for the community. “They (BJP) just want to create a binary. I do not think the people of Assam will fall for this trap of Hindu-Muslim binary. I fully believe that BJP is going to face a big surprise in this election,” he said.

Naxal attack: forces fell into deadly trap

Raipur for better medical attention. The lengthy gunfight between Maoists militants and security personnel broke out on Saturday at a remote hilly site in Bijapur district, close to Sukma district border in sprawling Bastar division where Maoists are attempting to run a de facto government in deep forests

since late 1980s. “Guerrillas armed with heavy weapons including rocket launchers were waiting for security personnel contingent... once a larger team of the search operation approached a hill, the militants who were positioned on top of the hill started spraying bullets in a flash from three sides,” a local

DRG policeman who was part of the search team told IANS. The attack site is located roughly 500 km south of state capital Raipur. “The security personnel were stunned by Maoists’ heavy gunfire... actually, it was an ambush designed in U-shape but the troopers too retaliated hard.” Reports say that Maoists brought 3-4 tractors on Saturday night to the attack site to ferry away dead bodies of their comrades. The local police officials are now claiming that intelligence inputs should have been verified from multiple credible sources before rushing a larger team to catch Hidma, one of the most wanted terror faces in the mineral-rich Bastar. The brutal killings of troopers have created a wide-

spread anger in the state and people in tribal stronghold Bastar have called for immediate revenge. Chhattisgarh’s Bastar division, which is made up of seven districts including Bijapur and Sukma, has been the epicentre of major Maoist attacks in past three decades. Rebels had killed 76 CRPF men in a single attack in April 2010 in Bastar which is described the deadliest attack by Maoists on security forces in India. In May 2013, Maoists carried out an audacious attack on a Congress party convoy at Jheeram ghati in Bastar in which entire topranked leaders of the party in the state were wiped out including then state chief Nandkumar Patel, popular tribal leader Mahendra Karma and former Union Minister V.C. Shukla.

the whole episode reveals that highly sensitive information pertaining to national security regarding the arrest of some suspicious persons, apprehended by the BSF from close to the volatile Indo-Pak border, has been unscrupulously twisted on baseless conjectures to malign and tarnish the farmer community,” he claimed. This “reality has been further substantiated by the fact that a selective leakage of the contents of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) letter to some leading newspapers and media houses has been done without waiting for an appropriate response from the state government”, he added. K h a na k u l , A p r 4 (PTI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday asserted that “goons sheltered by the Trinamool Congress” will be tracked and sent behind bars after the BJP forms government in West Bengal. He said the “murdered BJP karyakartas (workers)” including Sudarshan Pramanik from Hooghly district, will get justice “after 28 days”, referring to May 2, the day of counting of votes polled in the eight-phase assembly elections. “TMC goons, listen carefully. After the counting of votes, we will teach you a lesson. Similar things happened in Uttar Pradesh four years back after we formed the government there. “We imprisoned the tormentors of people. In Bengal, we will punish those who are a part of the syndicate raj and demand cut money (commission),” Adityanath said. He added that “goondaism also came to a halt in Kashmir” after the BJP

government at the Centre took firm steps. Accusing the TMC supremo of pursuing politics of appeasement during her 10-year rule, he said Banerjee created hurdles in Durga puja, Saraswati puja and Holi celebrations in Bengal, something that never happens in Uttar Pradesh. “Elect the BJP to ensure you are not stopped from taking part in festivals,” he said. Adityanath later claimed at another rally in Jangipur in Murshidabad district that the Mamata Banerjee government did not

initially allow Durga Puja celebrations two years back in Bengal. The high court had to intervene “to ensure the rights of the Hindu community”, he said. “After the high court order, the administration here contacted their counterparts in UP to seek guidance on how to take necessary measures. I want to tell the TMC government that if there is will, you can always find a way,” the BJP leader said. TMC leaders, however, maintained that the state government has always extended help to festival organisers across the last decade, including providing Rs 50,000 to Durga puja committees last year in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. “This is a false propaganda of the BJP. For a fact, the UP government did not allow Durga puja to be held in 2020, but gave permission for Ram Navami celebrations,” West Bengal minister Subrata Mukherjee had recently said. Adityanath also

Mamata lashes at PM Modi for predicting BJP victory in WB polls Khanakul (WB), Apr 4 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday wondered whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “god or a superhuman” to have made claims of a BJP triumph in the assembly elections, six phases of which still remain. The TMC boss, without naming the Indian Secular Front (ISF) or its founder Abbas Siddiqui, said the BJP is giving money “to a person” to eat into minority votes. “What do you (Modi) think of yourself, are you god or superhuman?” Banerjee said, referring to remarks by the PM at public

meetings that he will attend the oath-taking ceremony of the BJP government in Bengal and request it to implement the PM-Kisan Nidhi scheme as early as possible. She claimed that the prime

minister breached the model code of conduct by “asking officers of the state government to be ready to attend the oath-taking ceremony.” Addressing back-toback rallies in Hooghly, Howrah and South 24 Parganas districts -- where assembly constituencies are set to go to polls on April 6 -- Banerjee further said, “We will not invite you (Modi) for the swearing-in.” The TMC supremo alleged that Modi’s recent visit to Bangladesh to commemorate its first prime minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary had led to “rioting” in the neighbouring country.

said Banerjee is “allergic” to the chanting of ‘Jai Shri Ram’. “Just like the way she doesn’t allow Durga Puja here, she is opposed to building of the Ram temple in Ayodhya.” He said decisions like giving the go-ahead for construction of the Ram temple and scrapping Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir are examples of BJP fulfilling its poll promises of 2019. “In my state, 1.30 crore people have been provided electricity free of cost, every poor family got free ration, everyone is covered under Ayushman Bharat. “In contrast, people of Bengal are deprived of the benefits of central projects, and farmers did not get Rs 6,000 under the PM Kisan Nidhi Yojana. Around 1,000 farmers committed suicide in the past 10 years,” he claimed. The UP CM also said had there been enough opportunities for the youth in Bengal, they would not have left the state in the first place.

Kochi, Apr 4 (PTI): Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, who has arrived at the Southern Naval Command here for a two-day visit, on Sunday reviewed the progress of work on the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) being constructed at the Cochin Shipyard, a Defence spokesman said. General Rawat visited the shipyard today evening. He was accompanied by Vice Admiral A K Chawla, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command and other top officials of the SNC, the spokesman said. Vice Admiral Chawla and senior officials of the Shipyard briefed the Chief of Defence Staff on the progress of work of the IAC, he said. Last December, IAC had entered the final phase of the project, after successfully conducting its Basin Trials at the Shipyard. Basin Trial is testing of the ship machinery and equipment in floating conditions before the sea trials.

have been camping at Delhi’s borders since November of last year against the Centre’s agriculture reform laws. The protesting farmers are demanding the repeal of the three laws along with a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP) for their produce.

den, Amarinder Singh said suitable action has already been initiated in each case and most of the persons are residing with their families. “If anything comes to notice at any stage, suitable legal action will be initiated against the culprits,” he added. Amarinder Singh was reacting to the Home Minister’s letter claiming that the Border Security Force (BSF) had apprehended 58

Indian nationals in 2019 and 2020 from border areas of Punjab, and the detainees had purportedly revealed that they were working with state’s farmers as bonded labourers. “It has been further informed that illegal human trafficking syndicates exploit these gullible labourers and Punjabi farmers hook them to drugs to make them work for long hours in their fields,” the MHA had said in the letter. Rejecting the letter as totally “unwarranted and factually incorrect”, the Chief Minister said neither the data nor the said reports submitted by the BSF authorities were in tune with the content of the letter. “The MHA letter talks of Abohar also while the fact is that there is no case of Abohar or Fazilka districts,” he pointed out, adding that “none of the con-

clusions of the Centre were borne out by facts”. Further, it was not the job of the BSF to investigate such matters, and they were only responsible for detaining any person found to be roaming along the border in suspicious circumstances, and handing them over to the local police, he added. “Before shooting out such a letter and making it public through the media, the MHA should have checked the facts and verified the information from the state government instead of making false accusations against farmers, and charging them with indulging in bonded labour and converting the labourers into drug addicts,” he added. “All the 58 cases alleged by the Centre have been investigated thoroughly and nothing of this kind has been found,” said Amarinder Singh.

Centre punishing AAP govt in Delhi for supporting farmers: Kejriwal

Chandigarh, Apr 4 (PTI): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday alleged that the BJP-led Centre was trying to “punish” his government for supporting the farmers’ agitation by making it powerless through a new law and went on to say that those not backing the stir were “traitors”. Addressing a ‘Kisan mahapanchayat’ in Haryana’s Jind district, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener asserted that he is ready to “make any sacrifice” for the sake of farmers who are agitating against the three central agri laws. “They have brought a Bill in Parliament to punish

Arvind Kejriwal

Kejriwal. We bore the brunt. They are punishing us for supporting farmers’ agitation,” said Kejriwal, while lashing out at the Centre for the enactment of the Government of National Capital

Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill in March. The chief minister said all powers will now be with the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. “What kind of law is this,” he asked, adding that his party despite winning 62 seats would have no power. It is the responsibility of every Indian who loves his country to support the farmers, Kejriwal said, adding the BJP will have to bow before the agitating farmers. “Any person who is with this agitation is a patriot and the one who is against the farmers’ agitation is a traitor,” he said.

Punjab CM hits out at Centre for spreading ‘misinformation’

Chandigarh, Apr 4 (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Sunday hit out at the Central government for spreading “misinformation” about the state’s farmers with its “grave and incorrect allegations” of bonded labourers working in the fields. Terming it yet “another conspiracy” to defame Punjab’s farmers whom the Central government and the ruling BJP have been “persistently trying to malign by dubbing them terrorists, urban naxals, goons, etc., in a bid to derail their agitation against the farm laws”, he said that the Union Home Ministry’s March 17 letter in this regard was a “bundle of lies”, aimed at “undermining” the farmers’ protest and “denigrating” the state’s Congress government. “A careful analysis of

Industry had gone to the local BJP office to attend a party meeting. When the farmers protesting against the three central agriculture-related laws came to know that the union minister was present at the BJP officer, they headed there to gherao him, but were stopped at three points by the police. Some of the farmers tried to break the barricades at the Red Road, but the police personnel deployed there foiled their attempt, police said. Farmers then raised slogans against the Central government and the minister, who is also the MP from Hoshiarpur. Parkash remained in the party office for about two hours and then left under heavy police protection.

Bijapur (Chhattisgarh), Apr 4 (IANS): Over 1,000 police personnel drawn from CRPF’s elite CoBRA unit, and the state police’s District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Special Task Force (STF) walked into a deadly trap of Maoists in deep jungle in a rebel-dominated patch in Chhattisgarh’s restive Bastar, purely on an unverified intelligence input that top ultra leader Madvi Hidma was holed up at a hilly site along with his colleagues. But the input was basically a well-planned trap of the Maoist guerrillas as they gunned down 22 security personnel and walked away with their weapons too. The casualty figure could further rise as at least 31 security personnel sustained multiple injuries and were airlifted to

A hard look at ECI

n incident that took place in Assam under Ratabari(SC) constituency after the second phase of polling on April 1, caused a huge outcry when a car carrying polling personnel with an Electronic Voting Machine(EVM) was intercepted by a crowd. What provoked anger across the state and in various parts of the country, was that the car used to transport the EVM belonged to the wife of a BJP candidate from another constituency. The ECI had to take suo moto notice over the report by suspending the four polling personnel besides the officer in-charge of the Assam Armed Police escort. The incident has again raised the spectre of rigging or manipulation of EVMs despite the Election Commission’s many strong defence that the system and procedures for conduct of polls was above board. The Congress, has said that the clarification of the EC that the personnel had to hitch a ride after the first vehicle had broken down while taking the EVMs and that it was a “coincidence” that the second vehicle belonged to the wife of a BJP candidate from a nearby constituency was unacceptable. There have been numerous complaints about unfair conduct by polling personnel in several states but the ECI has not taken serious note. Merely suspending the polling officials is but a knee jerk reaction. There has to be a thorough probe into the matter through a directive from the Supreme Court to ensure that the ECI is made accountable for any lapses. The role of the ECI has come under much criticism from opposition parties in the recent past especially after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Despite mounting criticisms, the ECI remains unfazed. It may be recalled that then Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi had alleged that an EVM had been tampered by the BJP. According to reports, during a mandatory mock poll in Jorhat on April 3, 2014, every time a button was pressed, the vote went in favour of BJP. To suggest that the onus of proving that EVMs can be rigged ought not to be with the accusers but with the ECI in order to ensure faith in the machines. What should be understood is that it is the ECI and not the EVMs that has to win the confidence of the people. Allegations that the ECI was tilting for the ruling party in power at the Centre was highlighted when one of the Election Commissioners- Ashok Lavasa, who was next in line for the post of chief election commissioner, was removed and shunted out to Asian Development Bank as vice president. Lavasa had dissented on a series of clean chits given by the Commission to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah on their speeches during the May 2019 election campaign for violation of Model Code of Conduct. Every action has a reaction the ECI isolated Lavas from further consultations. In September 2019, Lavasa’s wife was issued notices from Income Tax department inquiring about alleged discrepancies in her tax returns. The message was clear and simpleremain in EC and face tax authorities or leave. Lavasa decided to accept the assignment as the vice president of the ADB. It is unfortunate democratic process is being overshadowed due to the questionable decisions of the very body that is empowered to ensure that elections are conducted in a free and fair manner in a country which has been recently dubbed as ‘partly free’ by US-based Freedom House.

DailyDevotion The Way to Permanent Faith

Indeed the hour is coming…that you will be scattered… —John 16:32 Jesus was not rebuking the disciples in this passage. Their faith was real, but it was disordered and unfocused, and was not at work in the important realities of life. The disciples were scattered to their own concerns and they had interests apart from Jesus Christ. After we have the perfect relationship with God, through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, our faith must be exercised in the realities of everyday life. We will be scattered, not into service but into the emptiness of our lives where we will see ruin and barrenness, to know what internal death to God’s blessings means. Are we prepared for this? It is certainly not of our own choosing, but God engineers our circumstances to take us there. Until we have been through that experience, our faith is sustained only by feelings and by blessings. But once we get there, no matter where God may place us or what inner emptiness we experience, we can praise God that all is well. That is what is meant by faith being exercised in the realities of life. “…you…will leave Me alone.” Have we been scattered and have we left Jesus alone by not seeing His providential care for us? Do we not see God at work in our circumstances? Dark times are allowed and come to us through the sovereignty of God. Are we prepared to let God do what He wants with us? Are we prepared to be separated from the outward, evident blessings of God? Until Jesus Christ is truly our Lord, we each have goals of our own which we serve. Our faith is real, but it is not yet permanent. And God is never in a hurry. If we are willing to wait, we will see God pointing out that we have been interested only in His blessings, instead of in God Himself. The sense of God’s blessings is fundamental. “…be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Unyielding spiritual fortitude is what we need.

UN ESCAP forecast of K-shape warns of troubled recovery

Nobody answers whether PSU sales would help the country or pauperise it. ndia is growing and ought to grow after unplanned devastating lockdown of all economic and social activities but the growth story for 2021remains a mystery. The Economic Survey projected it at 11 percent, RBI 10.5 percent, International Monetary Fund 11.5 percent, World Bank in a wide range of 7.512.5 percent, and UN’s ESCAP puts it at 7 percent over a contraction of 7.7 percent through 2020. The Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) report 2021 says, India entered the pandemic lockdown with subdued GDP growth and investment. It says, “The pace of recovery further moderated in the fourth quarter 2020-21 with estimated year-on-year growth still close to zero.” The ESCAP says India’s 2021 economic output is expected to remain below the 2019 level or K-shape. It is almost at par with National Statistical Office (NSO) projection at 8 percent contraction 2020-21, showing the lockdown impact. It estimates that

I

the pandemic has pushed an additional 89 million people in the region into extreme poverty in 2020. The ESCAP praises China for becoming the only major economy worldwide to achieve a positive annual economic growth rate in 2020. But for the rest of the region, including India, the recovery is likely to be K-shaped. The economists use U, V and W to forecast different kinds of financial future. The K-shape is a new symbol and portrays a troubling, divergent economic future, one where the economy rebounds unevenly and where the wealthy benefit while everyone else gets left behind. This also bares the reality that pandemic or not lockdown devastated economies like that of India, which were trying to improve their conditions prepandemic. The repeated fear psychosis and threatening of partial or complete lockdown again is likely to create more business uncertainties and delayed recovery. Coupled with high policy quandary, officially-sponsored price rises, through heavy taxes on petroleum, other fuels, increasing toll-taxes on roads and consequent rise in fare, freight

and rail costs, causes 5.03 percent inflation in February, 2021, meaning despite wage contraction an individual’s expenses increase by over 5 percent. It may show a ‘better’ GDP in monetary terms but in reality it will be a regression, where people’s purchasing power reduces. This leads to shrinkage in production as is indicated by fall in February core sector output by 4.6 percent. It is exacerbated by lowering of deposit interest rates, taxes on provident fund and other accumulations, spree on privatization, including that of giant public sector banks to private swindlers. These add to the market uncertainties Shivaji and further possible regression. The flip-flop policy on normalizing relations with Pakistan, as the US defence secretary visits India and consequent refusal of Islamabad to walk the talk adds to further uncertainties. So does certain Indian companies’ truck with Myanmar’s militarycontrolled firms, slapped with UN sanctions. The recent accidental blockage of the Suez Canal route could add to further in-

flationary pressures as India’s 5 lakh barrels a day of crude import is to become expensive with tanker rates rising at least in the short run.The disinvestment drive has not succeeded during the past three years. Even now the policy though being steamrolled is raking up issues of how India would manage its future through an oppressive private sector for which all labour and financial policies, including interest rates are being compromised. Had India not accumulated such productive public sector organisations and nurtured banks, how could it have taken to the sales of family diamonds? It has Sarkar also raised questions of disposing off assets worth Rs 2.10 lakh crore without a public discussion and at the whims of some people at the helms of a few institutions. The powers of money bill and whether this should be put in check or not is being continuously debated. Nobody has answered whether such sales would help the country or pauperise it. There is no answer either to how the government promising two crore jobs would be able

to provide employment to jobless. The unemployment rate in the country declined to 6.52 per cent in March from 6.90 per cent in February, as per think-tank Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). This conceals the real numbers, of job losses during 2020 lockdown and does not included millions of under-employed or semiemployed. The rural sector is in twin-crisis of poor cash flow and glut of agricultural produce. This is giving rise to discrimination, puts brake on industrial and manufacturing recovery and restoration of economic health. It is about a world, including India, where a miniscule rich own most of the wealth while the rest are at the bottom owning a measly one or two percent as in the US. The Oxfam reports that the top 10 percent of the Indian population hold 77 percent of the total national wealth, 73 percent of the wealth generated in 2017 went to the rich 1 percent while 67 million Indians, the poorest half of the population saw only a 1 percent increase in their wealth. The number of billionaires in India rose from only

nine in 2000 to 101 in 2017 and 119 in the last four years. The rising forex reserves to $ 582 billion in March are not a very positive sign. It speaks of contracting imports by 46 plus percent and notional value increase (of about 21.7 percent) in gold prices held by RBI since March 27, 2000. India’s taxation system has also drawn ire of the US on retrospective tax and digital service tax, as per a policy restricting imports in tune with atmanirbhar Bharat. Various income-tax rules, TDS oppression and many other such set of laws like opening up of ten-year old cases is causing havoc of uncertainties. The uncertain Indian growth story, distress of the people due to complicated tax policies or little boost to production tells of a peculiar lack of thought process. The planning process needs to be reactivated for turning the economy to a fast track. The Narendra Modi government has to be proactive in reviewing the policies to regenerate the economic process, even thawing its bid for privatization. India needs to consolidate; the economic growth would be a corollary.

PM Modi reviews COVID situation

NEW DELHI, APR 4 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reviewed the COVID-19 situation and vaccination exercise in the country amid an “alarming rate of growth” in infections and deaths, with 10 states contributing to more than 91 percent of them. Modi said the five-fold strategy of testing, tracing, treatment, COVIDappropriate behaviour and vaccination if implemented with utmost seriousness and commitment would be effective in curbing the pandemic’s spread, according to an official statement. The reasons for the sharp rise in cases could be mainly attributed to the severe decline in compliance of COVID-appropriate behaviour, especially in the use of masks and social distancing, pandemic fatigue and lack of effective implementation of containment measures at the field level, it said. “A detailed presentation was made which

highlighted that there is an alarming rate of growth of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the country with 10 states contributing to more than 91 percent of cases and deaths due to COVID,” it said. It was noted in the meeting that vaccine manufacturers are ramping up their production capacity and are also in discussion with other domestic and offshore companies to augment the same. ous concern, a presentation in the meeting highlighted that the western state has contributed 57 percent of the total cases and 47 percent of deaths in the country in the last 14 days. In Maharashtra, the total number of new cases per day has touched 47,913 which is more than double its earlier peak. Punjab has contributed 4.5 percent of the total cases in the country in the same period but has accounted for 16.3 percent of the total deaths, a matter of

serious concern, the statement said. S i m i l a r l y, t h o u g h Chhattisgarh has contributed 4.3 percent of the total cases nationwide in the last 14 days, its contribution in total deaths has exceeded seven percent during the same period. The 10 high burden states and UTs are contributing 91.4 percent of the total cases and 90.9 percent of the total deaths in the country. Modi directed that central teams consisting of public health specialists and

clinicians be sent to Maharashtra in view of its high caseload and deaths, and to Punjab and Chhattisgarh as well because of the disproportionate number of deaths there, the statement said. For sustainable COVID-19 management, awareness of the community and its involvement is paramount, Modi said, adding that and there is a need to continue ‘Jan Bhagidari’ and ‘Jan Andolan’. A special campaign for COVID-appropriate behaviour with emphasis on 100 percent mask usage, personal hygiene and sanitation at public places, workplaces and health facilities will be organised between April 6-14, the statement said. In the meeting, a brief presentation on the performance of the COVID-19 inoculation drive was also made, and the details of the coverage of vaccination in various groups, performance with respect to other countries and analysis of states’ performance were deliberated.

COVID-19: Weekend lockdown in Maha, stricter curbs from Monday Mumbai, Apr 4 (PTI): The Maharashtra government on Sunday announced a weekend lockdown in the state from 8 pm on Friday to 7 am on Monday in a bid to curb the growing numbers of COVID-19 cases in the state. Apart from the weekend lockdown, strict restrictions will be in force from Monday 8 pm onwards, Minority Affairs Minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik told reporters after the cabinet meeting. He said that night curfew will continue and prohibitory orders issued under section 144 will be force during the day time during the week. “Apart from the weekend lockdown, strict restrictions will be in force from 8 pm tomorrow, under which shopping malls, bars, restaurants, small shops will be open only for take-aways and parcels. Theatres, drama theatres will be shut, while film and television shootings will continue if there is no crowding. Parks and playgrounds will also be closed, he said. Religious places will have to follow the SoPs, Malik said, adding that that public transport system will remain functional. COVID-19: Maha CM meets biz leaders to discuss mitigation plan

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday met a group of business leaders from the state to discuss the way forward to restrict the rise in COVID-19 cases. The virtual meeting, held early in the afternoon between the CM and the industrialists, was led by banker Uday Kotak, who is the national president of industry lobby CII, officials said. In face of the rising infections the state had recorded over 49,000 new infections on Saturday, contributing more than half to the national tally - Thackeray had on Friday said that he will consult all the stakeholders and announce the mitigation strategy in a couple of days.

MUMBAI, APR 4 (PTI): The ongoing probe into the security scare outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s house and the alleged murder of businessman Mansukh Hiran has led the NIA to documents that show some payments, suspected to be bribe money, being made to officials in the Mumbai Police and the administration, officials said here. They said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is scrutinising the documents unearthed during a raid Thursday on a club at Girgaum in South Mumbai to probe further the role of now-suspended police officer Sachin Waze, who is in the custody of the National Investigation Agency till April 7. One of the documents shows the name of the office as well as officers by des-

Sachin Waze in police custody

ignation and there was an amount mentioned against their names, and the same had been tabulated monthwise, the officials said. The officials suspect that the amounts mentioned against office and officers could be the bribe money paid every month. Before sharing further details, the NIA is likely to seek an explanation from the club-

owner and others about the documents. The officials said that if needed the documents would be shared with Income Tax or CBI authorities for further probe as the NIA is mandated to probe anti-terror cases only. They said the club was frequented by Waze who had even got Naresh Gor and co-accused Vinayak Shinde employed there.

Both of them are in the NIA custody at present. The NIA had Thursday also recovered documents pertaining to SIM cards procured through Gor for his personal use. Gor is alleged to have procured the SIM cards from Ahmedabad in Gujarat and these were handed over to Waze through Shinde, the officials said. One of these SIM cards was used by Waze to give a call to Hiran, which turned out to be the last call before the businessman was killed. The body of Hiran, who was in possession of the SUV used in the security scare incident, was found in a creek in the Mumbra town of the neighbouring Thane district on March 5. Hiran was allegedly killed by Waze after reports started surfacing that the case may be handed over to the cen-

tral agency for probe. Initial investigations suggested that Hiran was called to a place where he was made unconscious with the help of some drugs before being smothered to death. His vehicle was found outside Ambani’s house in Mumbai on February 25 with gelatin sticks and a threat note. The NIA has said in the court that Waze had taken the car from Hiran before allegedly planting the explosives and parking it outside Ambani’s house on February 25. Waze was arrested on March 15 by the NIA and is at present in the custody of the agency till April 7. The Maharashtra ATS, which was initially probing the Hiran murder case, had arrested Gor and Shinde. This case was also taken over by the NIA and the duo are in the custody of the agency till April 10.

While Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took out a roadshow in northern Kozhikode district and in Nemom in Thiruvananthapuram, Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan led a massive one at Dharmadam in Kannur, his home constituency. Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala also took part in a road show at Nedumkandam in Idukki district. At Dharmadam, in this marxist bastion in Kannur, where Vijayan travelled in an open red jeep, waving to his supporters lined up on either side of the road. Mass participation of people carrying red flags, umbrellas and balloons displaying party symbols of hammer, sickle and star, virtually turned the place into a sea of red. Women, children and elderly who stepped out to get a glimpse of the final spectacle were also not less in many places. By 7.00 pm the open campaigning came to a formal close in Kerala. T hir u v anan thapuram, Apr 4 (PTI): Massive road shows and long rallies, led by top national and state leaders on Sunday marked the finale of the weeks-long high-octane open campaigning for the April 6 Assembly polls in Kerala. Despite a ban imposed by the Election Commission on the customary crowded culmination of the open poll campaigning in view of the COVID-19 situation, mass participation of party workers could be seen in the final events in most of the 140 constituencies. Known as “Kottikalasham” in local parlance, the finale of the open poll campaigning used to be a jamboree in the southern state in which every political party would try to show off their strength by bringing a maximum number of supporters to add colour to the show. Party workers also held small fire fireworks display and burst crackers in some places. The ban seems to have failed to douse the spirit of the political parties as many thoroughfares teemed with party workers, who were seen waving their respec-

Maharashtra on Saturday reported 49,447 new COVID-19 cases, the highest rise in a day so far, taking its tally to 29,53,523. Besides, Chhattisgarh recorded 5,818 COVID-19 cases on Saturday, its highest single-day spike, taking the count of infections in the state to 3,63,796, as per official figures. Chouhan said those coming to MP from these states for necessary and unavoidable work were being screened. If found necessary, they will be kept in isolation, but the general movement of people will not be allowed. “They are our brothers and sisters, but we have to take such measures to control the spread of the coronavirus,” he said. Bhopal, Apr 4 (PTI): The Madhya Pradesh government will restrict the movement of people from neighbouring Chhattisgarh to curb the spread of COVID-19 and a lockdown will be enforced in isolated areas whenever needed, MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Sunday. Talking to reporters here, Chouhan said they have already sealed Madhya Pradesh’s areas bordering Maharashtra. “There will now be restrictions on movement from Chhattisgarh. Those who need to come for necessary and unavoidable work will be allowed on humanitarian grounds and transportation of goods will continue,” he said, citing the spread of COVID-19 in the neighbouring states. Chouhan said patience is needed to control the pandemic. “I will go out with a loudspeaker on my vehicle

Mumbai, Apr 4 (PTI): A sudden surge in COVID-19 cases and the government’s recent mandate asking the central bank to keep retail inflation around 4 per cent are likely to prompt the Reserve Bank to maintain status quo on policy rates at its first bi-monthly monetary policy review for the current fiscal, according to experts. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), RBI’s rate-setting panel, is also likely to maintain the policy stance accommodative at the next policy review to be unveiled on April 7, say experts. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das headed six-member MPC is scheduled to meet from April 5 to 7. The policy meet outcome will be announced on April 7. The RBI, experts feel, will wait for an opportune time to announce monetary action with a view to ensure the best possible outcome in terms of pushing growth without sacrificing the main objective of containing retail inflation at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side. The policy repo rate or the short-term lending rate is currently at 4 per cent, and the reverse repo rate is 3.35 per cent On the forthcoming monetary policy, Edelweiss Research said economic recovery is still uneven and the pace of improvement has slowed of late after sharp rebound from lows. Further, the recent rebound in Covid cases poses a fresh challenge. It said the growth and inflation dynamic warrants continued policy support, especially with rising covid cases domestically. “In all, we expect Mint Street to leave

rates unchanged and maintain an accommodative stance. The key monitorable will be any guidance on open market purchases (OMOs) or on long-term rates more generally,” it said. Dhruv Agarwala, Group CEO, Housing.com, Makaan.com and Proptiger.com said the RBI is walking a tight rope between COVID-19 cases once again rising across the country, which could potentially put brakes on the recovering economy, and the inflation rate that is trending upwards. “The apex bank is likely to keep the repo rate unchanged in the upcoming bimonthly review of key rates,” he said. He said home loan rates are at historic lows with recent cuts by a number of commercial banks and a further cut in rates will help the industry and the overall economy. Suman Chowdhury, Chief Analytical Officer, Acuit Ratings & Research, said the MPC in its upcoming meeting will continue to reaffirm the accommodative monetary policy despite the global increase in bond yields amidst concerns of a quicker than expected normalisation in the markets of developed economies. Last month, the government had asked the Reserve Bank to maintain retail inflation at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side for another five-year period ending March 2026. In a bid to control price rise, the government in 2016 had given a mandate to the RBI to keep the retail inflation at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side for a five-year period ending March 31, 2021.

The company’s cardin-force grew 15 per cent to 1.15 crore in the third quarter of the fiscal ended March 2021, against one crore in the year ago same period. The spends were higher by 8 per cent to Rs 37,797 crore from Rs 35,135 crore. And, the new accounts volume increased 8 per cent to 9,18,000 accounts in the third quarter of 2020-21, compared with 8,48,000 in the third quarter of 201920. Under the company’s pre-approved programme, wherein it looks towards the customer base of the parent bank and the cardable population, it has helped SBI Card immensely in terms of adding to the new card base, Amara added. “It star ted around 2017, it has now reached a good volume. It contributes well but if you look at our disclosures, more than 50 per cent is coming from our bank channel which you essentially call kind of a SBI sourcing,” Rao said further.

The pure-play card company is also seeing an emerging trend of securing more customers from nonmetro locations. It is also banking on its parent company SBI’s huge customer base to expand further. Maybe till 5-6 years ago, tier-I locations were contributing majorly to the credit card industry growth. “But, if you look at our recent performance, around 58 per cent of our incremental sourcing is actually coming from non-tier cities that is tier II, III and IV. “These are contributing more to our new credit card acquisitions, that is ba-

The disparity is captured by Bloomberg Economics’ new set of nowcasts which shows global growth of around 1.3% quarter on quarter in the first three months of 2021. But while the US is bouncing, France, Germany, Italy, the U.K. and Japan are contracting. In the emerging markets, Brazil, Russia and India are all being clearly outpaced by China. New Delhi, Apr 4 (PTI): SBI Card and Payment Services (SBI Card) has been seeing over 50 per cent of its transactions via online payments such as on groceries, utility bills, insurance premium, and hopes the trend to go up further as point of sale purchases are yet to pick up, top company executive said. Keeping a watch on the recent coronavirus resurgence in the country across some key locations, SBI Card MD and CEO Rama Mohan Rao Amara said it would be too early to say whether it will have any bearing on people’s purchasing behaviour. However, online payments is a trend which is going to go up further, he added. “Particularly within SBI Card, now, more than 53 per cent of the spends actually come from online payments which used to be around 44 per cent earlier. Almost 9 percentage points improvement is there mainly in terms of the categories like for groceries, apparel, utility bill payment, insurance premium, online education,” Amara told in

tivity to contain the virus. “While the outlook has improved overall, prospects are diverging dangerously,” IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said last week. “Vaccines are not yet available to everyone and everywhere. Too many people continue to face job losses and rising poverty. Too many countries are falling behind.” The result: It could take years for swathes of the world to join the US and China in fully recovering from the pandemic. By 2024 world output will still be 3% lower than was projected before the pandemic, with countries reliant on

of fiscal stringency. The EU’s 750 billion-euro ($885 billion) joint recovery fund won’t start until the second half of the year. The US will have two things going for it in making its case, Sheets said: A strengthening domestic economy and an internationally respected leader of its delegation in Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, no stranger to IMF meetings from her time as Fed Chair. But the world’s largest economy could find itself on the defensive when it comes to vaccine distribution after accumulating massive supplies for itself. “We will hear a hue and cry emerge during these meetings for more equal access to vaccinations,” said Sheets, who is now the head of global economic research at PGIM Fixed Income. And while America’s booming economy will undoubtedly act as a driver for the rest of the world by sucking in imports, there could also be some grumbling about the higher market borrowing costs that the rapid growth brings, especially from economies which aren’t as healthy.

hind the buoyant outlook: a shrinking virus threat, expanding US stimulus, and trillions of dollars in pent-up savings. Much will depend on how fast countries can inoculate their populations with the risk that the longer it takes the greater the chance the virus remains an international threat especially if new variants develop. Bloomberg’s Vaccine Tracker shows while the US has administered doses equivalent to almost a quarter of its people, the European Union has yet to hit 10% and rates in Mexico, Russia and Brazil are less than 6%. “The lesson here is there is no trade-off between growth and containment,” said Mansoor Mohi-uddin, chief economist at the Bank of Singapore Ltd. Former Federal Reserve official Nathan Sheets said he expects the US to use this week’s virtual meetings of the IMF and World Bank to argue that now is not the time for countries to pull back on assisting their economies. Washington, Apr 4 (Agencies): The world economy is on course for its fastest growth in more than a half century this year, yet differences and deficiencies could hold it back from attaining its pre-pandemic heights any time soon. The US is leading the charge into this week’s semiannual virtual meeting of the International Monetary Fund, pumping out trillions of dollars of budgetary stimulus and resuming its role as guardian of the global economy following President Joe Biden’s defeat of “America First” President Donald Trump, Bloomberg reported. Friday brought news of the biggest month for hiring since August. China is doing its part too, building on its success in countering the coronavirus last year even as it starts to pull back on some of its economic aid. The 12 victims were among the 16 people that had been recovered, state run Xinhua news agency reported. democratic achievements of the past, he added. There is very much possibility of regression threatening the democratic republic system hard earned by the people through various movements, as Prime Minister Oli’s unconstitutional move has posed a threat to democracy, he added. Being the main opposition and also a key partner of framing the Constitution of Nepal in 2015 it is our responsibility to protect democracy, he said. Prime Minister Oli’s dissolution of the House

of Representatives in December triggered a political crisis in Nepal. However, in a landmark ruling, the apex court in February reinstated the lower house of Parliament. The political scenario in the country worsened after the Supreme Court last month nullified CPNMC’s merger with CPNUML. The two parties had merged in May 2018 to form a unified Nepal Communist Party following the victory of their alliance in the 2017 general elections. “We will hold talks with all pro-democracy parties before forming a new government,” Singh told PTI. Informed sources said that a faction of the ruling CPN-UML, Janata Samajwadi Party and CPNMaoist Centre will also join the move if Nepali Congress takes initiatives to form a new government under its leadership.

Airstrikes kill 82 militants in Afghanistan KABUL, APR 4 (IANS): At least 82 militants have been confirmed dead as warplanes pounded Taliban hideouts and positions in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, the former stronghold of the militant group, a top police official said on Sunday. The sorties began on Saturday night in parts of the restive Arghandab district, Xinhua news agency quoted the provincial police spokesman as saying. Besides killing 82 armed insurgents including Taliban’s key commander Sarhadi, two tanks and several vehicles of the insurgents have also been destroyed, the spokesman said. Without hinting at possible casualties of the security personnel, he said the clean-up operations backed by warplanes were still continuing in parts of the troubled district. Taliban militants who are active in parts of Kandahar province are yet to comment on the airstrikes.

3 dead in N. Carolina house party shooting WASHINGTON, APR 4 (IANS): Three people were killed and four others injured during a house party shooting in the US state of North Carolina, police said. The incident took place on Saturday in Wilmington city, reports Xinhua news agency. The injured victims were hospitalised in unknown conditions, according to the Wilmington Police Department. No one was in police custody, and at least one person suspected of firing shots was believed to have fled, local media reported. “In my more than two decades as a prosecutor this is one of the worst crimes we have ever had in the Port City,” said District Attorney Ben David. Major US cities saw a 33 per cent hike in homicides last year, according to a CNN report, noting the crime surge continued into the first quarter of this year. On March 31, four people, including a nine-yearold boy, were killed during a mass shooting in the city of Orange, California state.

Myanmar anti coup protesters hold ‘Easter egg strikes’ YA N G O N, A P R 4 (IANS): Protesters across Myanmar staged “Easter egg strikes” on Sunday, painting and writing antimilitary slogans on eggs as a symbol of defiance and opposition to the February 1 coup. The eggs, decorated to mark Easter Sunday, were placed in public areas, while photos were also shared on social media, dpa news agency reported. Street protests were held in the regions of Yangon, Mandalay, Sagaing, Tanintharyi and in Kachin state, local media reported. The largest demonstration was in Mandalay, as people from the health and education sectors and students union all joined the strike. Meanwhile, arrest warrants were issued for 20 more celebrities, according to the military’s news channel on Saturday evening. Many celebrities and social media influencers oppose the coup and shared

Boris plans ‘Covid passport’ trials to reopen mass events LONDON, APR 4 (PTI): UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to unveil a series of measures including so-called “Covid passports” to allow mass events such as sports matches and night clubs to resume safely as England’s lockdown is eased in phases. In announcements expected on Monday, Johnson is expected to lay out details of trial events in the coming months that will explore how ventilation and testing before and after events could help audiences back into arenas and auditoriums – over a year after being shut down to control the spread of the deadly virus. The pilot schemes involving what is being dubbed as “Covid-status certification” will include the football FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium in London and are expected to involve a smartphone app or a paper certificate. The trials will last until mid-May, when the next phase of lockdown easing is scheduled before a complete easing of restrictions

by June 21 under Johnson’s roadmap. “Vaccination is a hugely powerful tool, but it can never provide 100 per cent protection. That is why we need to look at every option potentially available to ensure the fastest, safest and most sustainable road back to normality,” writes Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove in ‘The Sunday Telegraph’. “Given the hit the night-time economy and the entertainment sector has taken over the last year, anything which might help businesses reopen sooner must be worth considering. The Israeli approach involves a smartphone app and the

NHS app could serve a similar purpose here,” notes the minister, who has been leading a review into the process. According to the BBC, the first pilot event will be a comedy night in Liverpool on April 16, where audience members will be tested for Covid before and after the show. Professor Iain Buchan, of the University of Liverpool, will be helping to run testing for the Liverpoolbased trials and said taking part in the Liverpool pilots would involve “giving your consent to take part when you book a ticket; receiving text messages about hands, face, space, fresh air; minimising unnecessary contacts before the event; getting tested within 36 hours, ideally as close to the event as possible; ideally having a test earlier in the week”. He added: “Don’t go on the day if you have any symptoms. All the events will be in very well-ventilated places and the ventilation will be studied, and people will be asked to minimise

contacts and get another test five days after, for the purpose of research.” However, critics of these plans, including more than 40 parliamentarians from Johnson’s Conservative Party and privacy campaigners, have suggested that such Covid passports could prove counter-productive. Downing Street has also indicated that ministers are finalising plans to allow overseas travel through a traffic light system approach, with countries designated as red, amber and green based on their Covid risk levels. Non-essential international travel remains banned under current lockdown rules and the government advice continues to go against booking any overseas trips for summer holidays at this stage. It comes as the National Health Service (NHS) released latest figures that show over 5 million adults in the UK, nearly one in 10, have now received their second of the two-dose vaccines to protect against Covid-19.

Pak anti-terrorism court jails Hafiz’s 5 aides in terror financing case Rockets fall near Iraqi base LAHORE, APR 4 (PTI): A Pakistani anti-terrorism court has sentenced five leaders of Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed’s Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD) to nine years of imprisonment each in a terror financing case. Three of them -- Umar Bahadar, Nasarullah and Samiullah -- have been convicted for the first time since the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Lahore pronounced its verdict some time ago in the terror financing cases registered by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of the Punjab police. The other two -- JuD spokesperson Yahya Mujahid and senior leader Prof Zafar Iqbal -- had already been convicted for many years in other terror financing cases. ATC Lahore Judge Ejaz Ahmad Buttar on Sat-

urday handed down nineyear imprisonment to each five of them. The judge also ordered a six-month jail term to Saeed’s brother-inlaw Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki in the same case. “The court found the JuD/LeT leaders guilty of offence of terrorism financing. They had been collecting funds and unlawfully financing the proscribed organisation, LeT (Lashkare-Taiba). The court has also ordered confiscation of assets made from funds collected through terrorism financing,” the CTD said. The JuD leaders were presented in the court amid high security and the media was not allowed to cover the proceedings. The CTD of Punjab Police had registered 41 FIRs against the JuD leaders, including 70-

Hafiz Saeed

year-old Saeed, in terror financing cases. The trial courts have so far decided 37 of them. The ATC had sentenced the LeT founder, Saeed, for a collective imprisonment of 36 years on terror finance charges under sections 11-N of Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 in five cases so far. Saeed’s jail terms will run concurrently. That means he will not stay in jail for many years. He is serving his term in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail along with other convicted

JuD leaders. Saeed-led JuD is the front organisation for the LeT which is responsible for carrying out the 2008 Mumbai attack that killed 166 people, including six Americans. Saeed, a UN designated terrorist whom the US has placed a USD 10 million bounty on, was arrested on July 17, 2019 last year in the terror financing cases. The US Department of the Treasury has designated Saeed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. He was listed under the UN Security Council Resolution 1267 in December 2008. The ATC Lahore had also sentenced LeT operation commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi for a collective imprisonment of 15 years on three counts in a terror financing case. He will

have to serve in jail for five years as his sentence in three counts (five years each) will run concurrently. The global terror financing watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is instrumental in pushing Islamabad to take measures against terrorists roaming freely in Pakistan and using its territory to carry out attacks in India and elsewhere. The Paris-based FATF placed Pakistan on the Grey List in June 2018 and asked Islamabad to implement a plan of action to curb money laundering and terror financing by the end of 2019 but the deadline was extended later on due to COVID-19 pandemic. In February, the FATF retained Pakistan on its Grey List until June.

26 arrested in London as ‘Kill the Bill’ protesters clash with police LONDON, APR 4 (PTI): At least 26 people have been arrested after clashes between officers and demonstrators at a “Kill the Bill” protest in central London. They engaged with my officers when required and left when asked – I would like to thank them for doing so,” said Commander Ade Adelekan, who led the policing operation in Parliament Square in London on Saturday. “However, a small minority did not engage despite the repeated efforts of officers on the ground. This left us with no option but

to move to an enforcement stage and arrests have been made,” he said. “We remain in the middle of a global pandemic and we have made great progress in controlling the spread of the virus; we will not allow the selfish actions of a small number of people to put Londoners progress in jeopardy,” he added. The so-called “Kill the Bill” demonstrations also took place in Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol, Newcastle, Brighton, Bournemouth, Weymouth and Luton to protest against

the Police and Crime Bill – which propose to give police in England and Wales more power to impose conditions on non-violent protests, including those which are deemed too noisy or a nuisance. Anyone refusing to follow police directions about a protest could be fined up to 2,500 pounds under the law. Former Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn was among those who addressed the protest in London and said the bill would prevent protest without police approval.

hosting US contractors

TIKRIT, Iraq, APR 4 (AGENCIES): Two rockets fell on Sunday in a rural area close to an Iraqi military air base hosting some U.S. contractors, but there were no casualties, Iraqi security officials said. The rockets landed on the outside fence of the base, the Iraqi military said. Initial investigations showed attack aimed to strike Balad air base, north of Baghdad, but the rockets fell short and hit the village of al-Bu Asi just to the southeast, the security officials said. The last attack on Balad air base was on March 15 when at least five rockets hit the base. No group immediately claimed the

attack, but armed groups that some Iraqi officials have said are backed by Iran have claimed similar incidents in the past. U.S. officials blame Iran-backed militias for regular rocket attacks on U.S. facilities in Iraq, including near the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. Iran-aligned paramilitary groups have demanded that all foreign troops, including U.S. forces who number around 2,500 in Iraq, leave the country, calling their presence an occupation. A U.S.-led coalition, whose mission is to fight Islamic State militants, is still stationed in Iraq, as well as a NATO-led mission that trains Iraqi security forces.

JAKARTA, APR 4 (AP): Landslides and flash floods from torrential rains in eastern Indonesia killed at least 44 people and displaced thousands, a disaster relief agency said Sunday. Several others were still missing. Mud tumbled down onto dozens of house in Lamenele village from the surrounding hills shortly after midnight on Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara province. Rescuers recovered 38 bodies and five injured, said Lenny Ola, who heads the local disaster agency. The bodies of three people were found after being swept away by flash floods in Oyang Bayang village as 40 houses were destroyed, she said. Hundreds of people fled submerged homes, some of which were carried off by the floodwaters. Seasonal downpours cause frequent landslides and floods and kill dozens each year in Indonesia, a chain of 17,000 islands where millions of people live in mountainous areas or

NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter touches down on Red Planet

N

ASA’s Mars helicopter Ingenuity has been dropped on the surface of the Red Planet ahead of its historic first flight scheduled for April 11. Ingenuity flew to Mars while being attached to the belly of NASA’s Perseverance rover, which made a February 18 touch down on the Red Planet. “#MarsHelicopter touchdown confirmed! Its 293 million mile (471 million km) journey aboard @ NASAPersevere ended with the final drop of 4 inches (10 cm) from the rover’s belly

to the surface of Mars today,” NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, tweeted late on Saturday. “Next milestone? Survive the night.” The US space agency last week announced the decision to push back the date of the first attempt to fly the helicopter on Mars from April 8 to April 11. Flying in a controlled manner on Mars is far more difficult than flying on Earth. The Red Planet has significant gravity (about one-third that of Earth’s), but its atmosphere is just 1

per cent as dense as Earth’s at the surface. During Martian daytime, the planet’s surface receives only about half the amount of solar energy that reaches Earth during its daytime, and nighttime temperatures can drop as low as minus 90 degrees Celsius, which can freeze and crack unprotected electrical components. To fit within the available accommodations provided by the Perseverance rover, the Ingenuity helicopter must be small. To fly in the Mars environment, it must be lightweight. To survive the frigid Martian nights, it must have enough energy to power internal heaters. The system -- from the performance of its rotors in rarified air to its solar panels, electrical heaters, and other components -has been tested and retested in the vacuum chambers and test labs of NASA’s JPL in Southern California. eteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher on Sunday informed that he has started working on his next project titled ‘Moh Maya’ in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The project is being helmed by Narayan Shi. The actor shared photographs from the Mahurat puja on Instagram and wrote: “And suddenly you know it is time to start something new and trust the magic of new beginnings... Project 519 takes off. Jai Ho! #MohMaya #SwipeLeft #FrontSeatEntertainment #NarayanShi.” Anupam Kher recently took to social media to in-

form that his wife, actress and BJP MP Kirron Kher has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells, and is undergoing treatment. Thanking everyone for their wishes, Kher posted on Instagram on Friday and thanked everybody for their love, concern, best wishes and blessings for his wife Kirron, saying she has conveyed her gratitude to all of them. hallenging the findings of an earlier research, a new study claims that there is no evidence to show that exposure to television in toddlerhood causes attention-deficit problems in school-age children. The new research, published in the journal Psychological Science, reexamined previous work that claimed to show a direct link between early screen time and attention problems in children. “The findings from the original study, upon further scrutiny, are not borne out. We found that there is still no evidence that TV, by itself, causes ADHD or any kind of attention problems in young children,” study co-author Wallace Dixon, Professor of Psychology at East Tennessee State University in the US, said “Our research also tells us that it’s important to be skeptical of earth-

shattering findings that come in the form of ‘something that everybody is doing harms our children’.” The newly-reported research involved looking at the same data as the 2004 study and using multiverse analyses -- a technique that involves asking a research question hundreds of different ways to determine if the answers are similar each time. This method was used to create 848 analyses to find out if early TV viewing causes later attention

problems. A vast majority of results showed no link between the two. The few that did, the authors believe, reflect some oddities in the data set that are not likely to represent the real world. “ W h a t exc i t e s u s about the research is that we can ease up on blaming parents or making them feel guilty for letting their children watch television when they are very young,” said Dixon. ctor Tom Holland admits being scared while taking on his role in the new crime drama “Cherry”. The film casts him as a soldier-turned-bank robber who suffers from PTSD, and the “Spider-Man” star says he was not sure if he could do justice to the role. “I was on the Disney lot doing my last day of work on ‘Avengers: Endgame’ when Joe and Anthony mentioned a movie they wanted to do. I was immediately up for it. I was like, ‘I’m in for whatever you guys are doing. If it’s just two pages of dialogue, or an entire film, I’m there’,” Holland told an interview with OK! Magazine, according to femalefirst.co.uk. He added: “And then they sent me the book on which the story was based and I was blown away. This is something very different for me. I was massively scared too.” The actor wanted to make sure his portrayal spread the right message. “I wanted to please everyone and do justice to the story and to the thousands of stories around the world that are about recovery, addiction, or PTSD. I felt a real sense of responsibility to get it right,” he said.

Badminton International: Sociedad beat Athletic to win Copa del Rey Para Indian shuttlers enter finals BARCELONA, APR 4 (IANS): Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty earned Real Sociedad their third Copa del Rey trophy after a 1-0 win over rivals Athletic Bilbao in the postponed derby final from last season. The 2019/20 final was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic and continued to be pushed back in a bid to let fans attend, but they still cannot go to matches in Spain, Xinhua news reports. Athletic immediately have another chance to lift the trophy in this season’s cup final on April 17, against Barcelona, also at Seville’s La Cartuja stadium. They last reached the final in 2015, where they were beaten by Barcelona, and have not won it since 1984, even though they are second in the list of record winners with 23 triumphs. Indian rowers, men archers get 1st Covid shot

NEW DELHI, APR 4 (IANS): India’s leading rowers and archers preparing for this year’s Olympic Games at the Army’s training centre in Pune have got the first doses of Covid-19 vaccine, a coach familiar with the development said on Sunday. “The first dose of the vaccine has been given. The second dose will be administered next week. The rowers have got vaccines not because they are top athletes but because they are employed with the Indian Army,” chief national coach Ismail Baig told IANS from Pune. The Union health is mum on the issue of providing Covid-19 vaccines to those athletes who have qualified for the Olympic Games, to be held in Tokyo in July-August, despite the Indian Olympic Association having written to it several times. The men’s four-member rowing team is preparing for the World Rowing Asia Oceania Continental Olympic and Paralympic qualification regatta, to be held in May 5-7 in Tokyo.

was opened up shortly after the hour mark when Inigo Martinez fouled Portu in the area as he burst through on goal, leading in a penalty and a red card for the Athletic defender. The expulsion was re-

voked after a lengthy VAR review but Oyarzabal fired home from the penalty spot to send Real Sociedad ahead. The goal proved decisive to earn La Real their first Copa del Rey win

since 1987, a bitter blow for Martinez, who left his boyhood club Sociedad for Athletic in 2018. “It’s a beautiful day where you remember everything,” said Oyarzabal. “Giving this to our

fans was the best thing that we could do. There’s a lot of people I would have liked to be here. This is for everyone, it’s incredible. We are champions and we’ll celebrate it without a doubt.” Athletic chased the game but failed to create much danger, even in the final stages as Sociedad held on comfortably to earn their first major trophy in over three decades. Los Leones, meanwhile, have now lost five cup finals since they last lifted the trophy. “This is very tough for us,” said Athletic’s Oscar de Marcos. “It was a game we had a lot of hope for and we thought we could win it. “It’s a really big blow for us to take. Finals are hard when you lose, whoever the opponent is. It’s a very sad day for us. We missed our fans.”

PENNSYLVANIA, APR 4 (AGENCIES): Joel Embiid scored 24 points on his return from injury as his Philadelphia 76ers side beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 122-113. Embiid missed 10 games with a bone bruise in his left knee and was rusty on his comeback, missing all of his three-point attempts. The win sent the 76ers back to the top of the Eastern Conference, level with the Brooklyn Nets. Western Conference leaders the Utah Jazz beat

the Orlando Magic 137-91. Donova n M itc hell scored 22 points, including six three-pointers, as the Jazz won their ninth successive game. They set an NBA record with 18 three-pointers in the first half, surpassing the Golden State Warriors’ previous best of 17 from 2018. Luka Doncic finished with 26 points as the Dallas Mavericks went four games unbeaten with a 109-87 win over the Washington Wizards. The Portland Trail Blazers cruised past the

Oklahoma City Thunder 133-85 with CJ McCollum scoring 20 points in just 26 minutes. MOUNT MAUNGANUI, APR 4 (IANS): Australia women on Sunday beat New Zealand by six wickets to set a new record for longest winning streak in ODIs across men’s and women’s cricket. New Zealand were all out for 212 with Megan Schutt picking four wickets after which half centuries from opener Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner helped Australia seal the win in 39 overs. This was Australia’s 22nd consecutive ODI win, thus surpassing the record set by Ricky Ponting’s all-conquering Australian men’s team in 2003. Schutt started off with a wicket off her first ball of the match after which New Zealand struggle to score. Opener Lauren Down was the hosts’ highest run scorer with 90 off 134 balls. D ow n’s Au s t r a l i a counterpart Healy took an opposite approach to her innings, smashing 65 off 68 balls with seven fours and two sixes. Bayern open seven-point Japanese swimmer Ikee qualifies for gap with 1-0 win over Leipzig Oly 2 years after leukaemia diagnosis

TOKYO, APR 4 (AGENCIES): Japanese swimmer Rikako Ikee has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics 4x100m medley relay two years after being diagnosed with leukaemia. The 20-year-old won the 100m butterfly at Japan’s Olympic trials in 57.77 seconds to seal her place. “I was really happy but also really surprised,” she said. Ikee resumed training in March last year after spending about 10 months in hospital. After her first Bayern Munich teammates hail their goal keeper after he saved a goal from Leipzig comeback victory in the BERLIN, APR 4 (IANS): Bayern Munich opened up a seven-point advantage atop the standings after beating second-placed rivals Leipzig on the sole goal from Leon Goretzka in the 27th round in the Bundesliga. The German giants staged a clinical performance after beating courageous Leipzig on the first-half hammer from Leon Goretzka, Xinhua reported. Hosts Leipzig started powerfully in the top of the league clash and dominated possession, but they had to wait until the 19th minute before Marcel Sabizter’s long-range effort called Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer into action. Contrary to the usual K Y M C

practice, Bayern defended deep and waited for counterattacking opportunities. The visitors’ strategy paid off with 38 minutes gone, as Joshua Kimmich’s deep through ball found Thomas Muller, whose cutback pass allowed Goretzka to drill the ball from 12 meters into the top right corner. Leipzig was shocked whereas Bayern kept custodian Peter Gulacsi busy as Leroy Sane and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting came close before the break. After the break, Leipzig came out with its guns blazing but neither Christopher Nkunku, Dani Olmo nor Sabitzer was able to make the most of promising chances. Sabitzer remained a

factor in Leipzig’s game as his dangerous long-range efforts forced Neuer to make two diving saves in the closing stages. Bayern lurked for fast breaks but was able to protect its narrow lead until the final whistle to move seven points clear of Leipzig. With the result, leaders Bayern snatched its 20th win while Leipzig suffered its fourth defeat of the season. “We played very well. Especially the second half was very good. I think we were overall the better team today but if you don’t score, you can’t win. We have to make the most of our chances,” said Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. “Captain Temba Bavuma pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing,” the International Cricket Council further said.

I thought if I was to get in it might be the 100m freestyle relay. “I thought if it wasn’t to be, it wasn’t to be. If I did get in it would be good experience to take to the next Olympics.” Ikee missed the 57.10secs individual qualifying time but will have chances to clinch an individual spot this week at the Japanese trials when she races in the 50m and 100m freestyle.

Gardner then put up an unbeaten 79-run stand to take Australia over the line. Australia thus lead the three-match series 1-0. The second ODI will be played at the same venue on April 7. Brief scores: New

Zealand 212 all out (Lauren Down 90, Amelia Kerr 33; Megan Schutt 4/32) lost to Australia 215/4 in 38.3 overs (Alyssa Healy 65, Ellyse Perry 56 not out; Amy Satterthwaite 1/10) by six wickets with 69 balls remaining

Newcastle hold Spurs 2-2 in EPL Southampton fight back for 3-2 win over Burnley

Tottenham’s Hary Kane score against Newcastle United during the EPL match.

LO N D O N, A P R 4 (AGENCIES): Newcastle earned a vital point in their fight for Premier League survival thanks to a late equaliser 2-2 against Tottenham from on-loan Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock at St James’ Park. The 21-year-old reacted quickest, after Miguel A l m i r o n’s e f f o r t wa s cleared off the line, to fire into the roof of the net and deny Spurs a place in the top four for the first time since 2 January. In an entertaining game Newcastle took the lead when Joelinton slotted home a lovely threaded pass from Sean Longstaff

after Spurs were guilty of overplaying at the back. Jose Mourinho’s side responded within 90 seconds as the hosts, and in particular Emil Krafth, failed to clear in the area, and an alert Kane prodded home for his 18th goal of the campaign. The visitors were leading four minutes later when Kane, fed by a brilliant reverse pass from Tanguy Ndombele, clinically fired across Martin Dubravka from the right-hand corner of the penalty area. The 27-year-old almost got a third, moments before Willock’s goal, but his effort cannoned into

the base of the post and behind. Newcastle - who have now only won two of their past 19 Premier League games - remain 17th, but move three points clear of Fulham who occupy the final relegation spot. The Cottagers would climb out of the bottom three on goal difference if they beat Aston Villa at 16:30 BST. Tottenham, who conceded a 97th-minute equaliser against Newcastle earlier in the season, move up to fifth - above Liverpool and West Ham - but remain two points behind Chelsea who are in the final Champions League spot.

Southampton came back from 2-0 down to beat Burnley 3-2 at St Mary’s to move further clear of the Premier League relegation zone. The visitors had raced into a 2-0 lead on the south coast thanks to Chris Wood’s 12th-minute penalty awarded after the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee - and Matej Vydra’s well-taken goal 16 minutes later. However, the Saints drew level before half-time through Stuart Armstrong’s fine strike just past the halfhour mark and then Danny Ings’ wonderful solo goal against his former side. Nathan Redmond’s sweetly struck volley midway through the second half completed the turnaround for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team, who have moved up to 13th in the table and are now 10 points clear of 18th-placed Fulham, while the Clarets stay 15th, seven points above the drop zone.

City continue cruise, Liverpool beat Arsenal 3-0

Manchester City continued their cruise towards the Premier League title with a 2-0 win away to thirdplaced Leicester City. Pep Guardiola fielded a strong starting eleven despite his side playing in the Champions League next week and after a goalless first half, his side took the lead after Benjamin Mendy’s persistence saw him flash home a right-foot shot, Xinhua news reports. Kevin de Bruyne was the architect of the second goal of the game with a magnificent pass from Gabriel Jesus, who only had to slot the ball home from close range. Liverpool warmed up for next week’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid with a 3-0 win away to Arsenal. Diogo Jota opened the scoring in the 62nd minute after a weighted cross from Trent Alexander Arnold and Mohamed Salah doubled the lead seven minutes later after being set through on goal. Jota then added a third to seal an emphatic win with eight minutes left to play.

Miami Open: Barty wins title after injured Andreescu retires MIAMI, APR 4 (IANS): World number one Ashleigh Barty of Australia took the Miami Open women’s singles title as Bianca Andreescu of Canada had to retire in the second set of the final. Barty completed the 6-3, 4-0 victory after Andreescu was forced to retire in tears with an injury to her right ankle in the second set on Saturday, Xinhua news reports. “It’s never the way you ever want to finish a match, particularly in a final,” Barty said. “I really do feel for Bianca. I think she’s had such a rough trot with injuries in the past.” “I think that’s going to be one of the first of many battles for us. I just hope from now on they are healthy and we can both stay out on the court and fight for everything that we can give. Obviously, I feel for her having to pull out today,” Barty added. Barty completed a tremendous turnaround from the start of the event. In her two-and-a-half-hour opening clash against Kristina Kucova of Slovakia, Barty needed to save a match point before staving off the challenge from the

qualifier. The top seed was able to battle through the draw from there, including three-set wins over Victoria Azarenka and Aryna Sabalenka, before earning her milestone 10th WTA singles title. “I felt like with each

match I have been playing better and better, which is ultimately what we are after,” Barty said. “To be able to have the title at the end is a bonus, and to be able to defend my title the first time in my career I’ve been able to do that is really, really special too.”

Frampton retires after losing to Herring in WBO Real Madrid beat Eibar 2-0 in La Liga

DUBAI, APR 4 (AGENCIES): Carl Frampton announced his retirement in the ring after being stopped by Jamel Herring in the sixth round of their WBO superfeatherweight contest. The Belfast man was bidding to become Ireland’s first three-weight world champion. Herring dropped Frampton, 34, a round earlier before another left uppercut in the sixth sent Frampton to the canvas. Amid a flurry of shots and little defence, Frampton’s corner threw in the towel. “I said before I would retire if I lost this fight and that’s exactly what I’m going to do,” an emotional Frampton said in the ring.

“I just want to dedicate my life to my family now. Boxing has been good to me, it’s also been bad to me. “The last few years

with these boys [trainers Jamie Moore and Nigel Travis], have been the best of my career. “I just want to go home to my beautiful wife and

kids and that’s it.” After losing to Josh Warrington in December 2018, Frampton seriously considered retiring but opted to continue in pursuit of another world title, firm in the belief he still had that level of performance in him. The nature of the loss to Herring, given his assertion prior to the fight that such a result would signal an end to his career, has left Frampton with no doubt that the time is right to hang up his gloves. Before the first knockdown, Herring was firmly in control of the contest having used his jab and seven-inch reach advantage to take the first three rounds.

MADRID, APR 4 (AGENCIES): Karim Benzema continued his rich scoring form as Real Madrid warmed up for Tuesday’s Champions League fixture against Liverpool with victory over Eibar. The Frenchman recorded his 24th goal of the season with a firm header from eight yards in the 73rd minute. Marco Asensio scored the opener when he slotted in from midfielder Casemiro. The win moves Real to within three points of leaders Atletico Madrid, who are at Sevilla on Sunday. For coach Zinedine Zidane this win was the perfect way to mark his 250th game in charge of Los Blancos. The French coach had been under pressure earlier this season, following the Copa del Rey defeat by Alcoyano, but his side have been
