To fight COVID: joint strategy needed
Staff Reporter
D I M A P U R , AU G 9 (NPN): As the state government’s efforts to take up the main responsibility in tackling COVID-19 is proving to be hugely insufficient against the face of mounting cases, a strategic alliance with private hospitals, nursing homes and medical practitioners in Dimapur will hugely benefit the objective. The government of Nagaland may look to private hospitals, nursing homes and practitioners to engage them in tackling COVID-19through a joint strategy. As Dimapur has the highest number of COVID-19 cases as well as those under hospitalisation, government institutions are overcrowded and medical staff over worked. A joint strategy is the need of the hour in preparing for the post-lockdown period where the focus would have to shift to treatment and care. In order to mitigate the problems faced by government care centres and hospitals, it may be worthwhile to suggest that a new
D I M A P U R , AU G 9 (NPN): As reported in this newspaper on August 8, Nagaland Governor, R.N. Ravi will be leaving for Delhi on August 10. As reported, Ravi and NSCN (I-M) leadership are likely to hold a formal meeting during the third week of August in Delhi, after August 15 (Independence Day celebration). Earlier, the formal meeting between R.N. Ravi and NSCN (I-M) leaders, which was scheduled to be held in July 17, was postponed due to health issues Th. Muivah. Later, on July 20, Muivah flew to Delhi by a chartered flight for treatment, accompanied by his wife and others. NEW DELHI, AUG 9 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday transferred Rs 17,000 crore directly into the bank accounts of 8.5 crore farmers under the PM-KISAN scheme. He said the scheme has been successful in its objective to provide financial support to farmers without any involvement of middlemen. The Centre provides Rs 6,000 per year in three equal instalments under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme that was launched in December 2018. The prime minister “released the 6th installment under the PM-KISAN scheme of Rs 17,000 crore to nearly 8.5 crore farmers. The cash benefit was transferred directly to their Aadhaar verified bank accounts with the press of a button”, an official statement said.
process. Under such a strategy, government may also provide required facilities for treatment of COVIDpatients and subsidise cost of hospitalisation. The common strategy should also include a guarantee against discrimination of COVID19 patients in all medical facilities so as to not discourage COVID-19 patients from coming out openly for treatment. A joint and strategic alliance between government and private hospitals, nursing homes and private practitioners will also help information sharing and research on the ground reality for suitable planning and follow-up actions. D I M A P U R , AU G 9 (NPN): Nagaland Gaon Burah Federation (NGBF) has expressed its opposition to the recent campaign by a section of people seeking change of Government of India’s (GoI) interlocutor in Naga peace talks. NGBF president Shalem Konyak, general secretary Shikuto Zalipu and media secretary Akhu Naga in a release asserted that this was neither in the interest of the people nor in the lasting solution to the protracted Naga political issue. They pointed out that the question of who would be the interlocutor was GoI’s prerogative and that this should not come in the way of solution. NGBF alleged that a section people have been playing “antagonist” role against the Nagas all along with the agenda to have endless negotiations to re-
main in their comfort zones and continue to exploit the people, adding that this was is unacceptable. This agenda of playing double standards with negotiations without any commitment for solution was self destructive, it added. NGBF appealed to all the negotiators to stand committed to the historical process, which is in a critical phase, and deliver the long-awaited solution to the people. Mentioning that the Nagas had been reeling under uncertainty in absence of real peace for decades together and were therefore desperate to have peace in their land, the headmen’s body said this was expected from the political negotiations going on between the Working Committee of NNPGs and NSCN (I-M) with GoI for more than two decades.
Teachers show-caused for being absent KOHIMA, AUG 9 (PTI): A village school management board (SMB) in Phek district has issued show cause notice to eight teachers for being absent from duty since March end. The chairman of school management board Thuvopisu, Vesathu Dozo said: “as school management board we are concerned for the academic progress of our students and despite government standing orders directing the teachers to be present in place of posting, they are absent”. “We issued the show

and dedicated 100-bedded COVID-19 hospital be opened at Chümoukedima for COVID-19 patients and for which adequate funds be allocated. This will free the District Hospital Dimapur to enable it to restart its normal functioning. Next, an MoU can be entered with all private hospitals and nursing homes where the government can install TrueNat testing machines to be made available for testing COVID-19 cases. Presently it is difficult for private hospitals to obtain ICMR permission for installing TrueNat machines. However, if the state government installs them, then this will overcome the difficult and time consuming

keepers was an impracticable solution. This would mean that the vendors and shopkeepers will have to be tested every week for COVID-19. This illustrates the problems faced in contact tracing. As per World Health Organization (WHO), any COVID-19 patient without travel history or not knowing source of transmission falls under ‘community transmission’. However the government of India is steadfast in denying it even though there is huge spike in transmission in the region of over 60,000 per day. The total COVID-19 cases in India, as on August 9, stands at over 21 lakh up from only 560 cases on March 24,2020. According to one doctor involved with containing COVID-19, the virus is on indiscriminate transmission mode. He said whether it is ‘local transmission’ or ‘community transmission’ or as central health officials desperately insist, that it is between ‘Local and Community Transmission,’ the fact is the virus is unstoppable and those falling sick need to be looked after.

Nagaland through contact tracing is practically a herculean task because one person can be the source of transmission to multiple persons. For instance, if a COVID-19 positive transmits the virus to two persons and each of them in turn, transmit the virus to two more, the number of COVID-19 cases will multiply and increase manifold. Contact tracing involves identifying, interviewing and then testing scores of people many of who could be asymptomatic. Transmission is not restricted from person to person within office room or building but also through contacts with contaminated surfaces or objects in public places such as shops or malls or market places. Several people who were tested positive for COVID-19 recently could not identify from whom they contracted the virus as it could have been from customers or visitors to their work places. cause notice because we do not want to put our students career at risk,” he said. Concerned over the dilemma faced by students and parents in this remote village, the school management board and village authorities have purchased a projector to help students but in the absence of teachers it has become difficult to make it functional, Vesathu Dozo said. “We only want that the teachers make their presence felt, be it on roster system so that students can clarify their doubts and attain quality education,” the chairman of the school management board said. On being contacted, Principal Director of School Education, Shanavas C said, “there is no holiday for the teachers. Definitely schools cannot
run due to the pandemic but teachers have to be present at the place of posting and make notes and worksheets for distribution to the students”. Department has issued clear instructions to the government schools asking all teachers to be in station and help the students, and if the teachers are not present in the places of posting, there is nothing much wrong on school management board issuing a show cause notice to teachers”. Teachers have to be in station so that the distant education continues amidst the lockdown as they have to make an entry in the Teachers’ Diary of whatever notes they have distributed to the students, which will be monitored by the department, the principal director said.
MON, AUG 9 (NPN): A jawan of the Home Guards & Civil Defence, attached with the State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF), reportedly died in his sleep at the COVID Care Centre (CCC) in Mon. When contacted, DC Mon, Thavaseelan K said that the jawan had initially tested positive for COVID19 on July 25. However, the second test on July 31 returned negative, which indicated that he had recovered. Since the person was a frontline worker, as per the standard operating procedure, he was shifted to the institutional quarantine centre for a period of 14 days. Unfortunately, the jawan died in his sleep at the centre, DC said. It was also learnt that the medical team collected the sample of the deceased on Sunday for testing, which again returned negative.
