and threat to life”, the rebels alleged. The groups also appealed the people to avoid public gatherings and students to stay at home to boycott the Indian National celebrations. TPO hopes for solution without IBAPWO seeks state govt’s help; says foreclosing original aspiration measles spreading to border villages
DIMAPUR, AUG 10 (NPN): Expressing support for the ongoing political dialogue between the NSCN (I-M) and the Government of India, the Tenyimi Peoples’ Organisation (TPO) has expressed the hope that a settlement was reached soon “without foreclosing the original aspiration of the Naga People.” TPO resolved this at its presidential council meeting held on August 6, 2016 at Hotel Millennium, Kohima, said TPO president Timikha Koza and general secretary Vipopal Kintso in a press release. Further, TPO acknowledged the pioneers and leaders of the Naga political struggles for the contributions and sacrifices towards the “aspiration of Naga People to live as a Nation.” “TPO also take pride that the Tenyimi Community has contributed and sacrificed immensely for the Naga National movement,” the organisation said, adding that it would continue to support the cause of Naga People living together as
a people. Affirming its stand on the issue of “Integration of Naga inhabited Areas”, the organisation said the Tenyimi people who shared the same ancestry and lineage have also been badly affected by the arbitrary divide, which was “imposed without the slightest consent of our people.” “TPO as an organisation is also placed vertically divided by the so-called artificial state boundary with 5 (five) of its constituent Units in Nagaland and 5 (five) in Manipur State, besides putting a vast chunk of area and people under Assam. Hence TPO remain steadfast in the demand for the Naga people to live under one political roof,” stated the signatories. Meanwhile, TPO condemned and opposed the continued extension of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the Naga inhabited areas. TPO said it “fully support” and stand firmly with the Naga Hoho, NSF and NMA for the “withdrawal of the draconian law in our land.”
D I M A P U R , AU G 1 0 (NPN): With fear of the deadly measles outbreak spreading out to neighbouring villages bordering Nagaland, the International Border Area People’s Welfare Organisation (IBAPWO) has appealed to the Nagaland government, particularly Health and Family Welfare department to deploy additional resources, experts including required medicine and contribution towards humanitarian aid. It may be noted that the dreaded disease, which reportedly broke out from the remote northwestern Sagaing Region, killed over 40 people, mostly children. NSF protest rally against AFSPA today Correspondent
KOHIMA, AUG 10 (NPN): Even as the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) is set to hold protest rally in Kohima on August 11, 2016 against imposition of Armed Force Special Power Act (AFSPA), the human rights activists have described AFSPA as “a subjugation of human security” and said the Act has to be removed whether or not there was peace talk. Thursday’s proposed rally is the second rally called by the NSF against the imposition of AFSPA in the state during these two years. Despite demands and appeals from various Naga civil society groups to repeal Disturbed Area Act (DAA), the central ministry of home affairs had extended DAA for another six months in the state citing the reason that “Nagaland is in a disturbed and dangerous condition”. Naga People Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) secretary general, Neingulo Krome, told Nagaland Post that AFSPA has done nothing
good to Nagas since it was enacted in 1958. Krome said Nagaland government should strongly oppose the extension of DAA. He said when the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and Manipur chief minister could oppose, why Nagaland government cannot strongly oppose this Act. Stating that all Naga rights had been taken away under AFSPA, the NPMHR secretary general said that AFSPA had no place to stay in Naga society. He added that whether peace settlement talks were on or not, AFSPA should be removed. Vandanshan Lotha, who was the major victim of the March 5, 1995 Kohima incident, said AFSPA was not only bad for the Nagas but for all Indians. He said AFSPA should be done away, saying he did not want to see any children, civilians falling prey under AFSPA. On March 5, 1995, following burst of tyre of a vehicle that was part of a convoy of 16 Rashtriya Rifles, the
personnel claiming that the convoy had been ambushed started shooting and killed at least six civilians and injured several others. Va n d a n s h a n L o t h a , whose daughter was killed in the incident, said even if the incident has been cleared by the Justice Sen Commission by banning 16 RR battalion, the loss of a child cannot be replaced. Meanwhile, NSF has informed that those federating units and sub-ordinate bodies that could not organise the rally would join Kohima rally. While in Southern Naga area, NSF said the rally would be spearheaded by All Naga Students’ Association Maipur (ANSAM) supported by United Naga Council and Naga Women union Manipur. NSF’s proposed rally was a result of threat alleged meted out to a student leader of Pochury Students Union (PSU) by the Assam Rifles for observing a candle light service in memory of two innocent students killed at Wuzu firing during July 16, 2015.
tors and head of the administration posted under seven border blocks-- Phomching, Chen, Tobu, Noklak, Thonoknyu, Pongru and Meluri “should be taken into physical alarm”. IBAPWO lamented that the Naga inhabited areas of Myanmar lack basic amenities, while the affected areas have no resources to get medicines or carry out screenings/ testing. International Border Area People’s Welfare Organisation said it had also alerted authorities to prevent affected people from entering the Indian side for treatment, fearing it would spread out rapidly. People living in the seven blocks have been alerted to take preventive measures and to report to the authorities in case of any symptoms of measles, International Border Area People’s Welfare Organisation said. The areas worst affected by the outbreak are the isolated townships of Lahe and Nanyun, in the Naga SelfAdministered Zone adjoining the border with India, one of least inaccessible areas of Myanmar, where poor road conditions are made worse by monsoon weather. As on August 8, the death toll from the outbreak stood at 41, of whom 21 were females, the Council of Naga Affairs said.

Landslides cut off Ghokuto village
DIMAPUR, AUG 10 (NPN): Ghokuto village has been isolated from other places as the 8km stretch of road, which connects the village to Nihokhu EAC headquarters, remained blocked by landslides. In a press release, village head GB, G. Shikavi Zhimo, has urged the PWD (R&B) to look into the dire situation faced by the villagers. He said that the villagers were compelled to carry the sick people and trek down the hilly terrain to avail medical treatment. He said even students were made to walk through long and steep footpath to attend schools and colleges. Zhimo stated that the construction of the said road under PMGSY, which began July 17, 2012 as commencement date, was to be completed within 5 years time. However, till date the road has not been completed nor the work executed as per the specification, he said. In this regard, GB said the village wrote to chief engineer PWD (R&B) on May 5, 2015, but so far the department had not taken any initiative. Further, he stated that the village on its own had tried its best to maintain the road by deploying villagers funded by the village council. However, GB said the condition of the road had gone from bad to worse that the village authority was no more in a position to tackle the situation. Therefore, the village has once again requested the intervention of the concerned department. Meanwhile, the village has appealed to the responsible department not to release payment or security deposit to the contractor without the consent of the village.

More than 300 students also ply through the bridge to reach the other side where their schools are located, HVC said. HVC has urged upon the state government to take the matter on top priority and

CPI-M refutes Mamata’s charges on Tripura govt
Ag a rtala , Au g 1 0 (IANS): Ruling CPI-M in Tripura on Wednesday said West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee indulged in complete falsehood against Tripura and Left Front government. “Mamata Banerjee in her speech in Agartala on Tuesday indulged in total falsehood against Tripura and Left Front government. We challenge her to prove her bogus claims against Tripura,” Communist Party of IndiaMarxist state secretary Bijan Dhar said. “Without knowing anything, Mamata Banerjee provided false information on health, agriculture, education, social welfare, tribals, scheduled caste people and other aspects. She insulted the people of Tripura,” he said. Dhar, a CPI-M central committee member, said Banerjee had no role in expansion of railway line in Tripura, even when she was the railway minister. On Tuesday, Banerjee urged the people of
Mamata Banerjee Tripura to oust the Left Front government in the state in 2018 assembly election. She also claimed that as the railway minister in 2010, she had sanctioned railway projects for Tripura, while the CPI-M, Congress and BJP did nothing in this regard. “After a long struggle since 1949, the meter gauge railway line got extended up to Agartala in October 2008,” the Left leader said, adding that Banerjee falsified facts when she said that the Left Front government came to power with a tacit understanding with the central leaders of the Congress.
“Banerjee claimed that she has established 41 super speciality hospitals in West Bengal. But in reality not a single such hospital was set up during her rule so far,” Dhar said. He said the Left Front government in Tripura is the first in India to enact a law dealing with the illegal chit fund companies. “However, Banerjee portrayed different picture to malign the Left Front government in Tripura,” Dhar added. “In literacy, Tripura is the number one state in the country with the current literacy rate of 96.82 per cent. The state has huge made huge progress and got awards from the central government in the fields of health, agriculture, education, social welfare, panchayati raj, tribals and other sectors,” he stressed. He said the Left Front government has introduced 25 social schemes benefiting 312,000 persons and giving rice at Rs 2 per kg to 25 lakh persons since September 2015.

SENAPATI, AUG 10: With the rest of the world, World’s Indigenous Peoples Day was celebrated under the theme “Indigenous Peoples’ Right to Education” at Thangal General Memorial Ecological Park, Mayangkhang Senapati HQ on August 9. Resource person, pro-vice chancellor, Deptt. of Sociology, Nagaland University, Prof. Dr. A. Lanu Ao, remarked that among different people of the world celebrating the day, Nagas were the most rightful people to claim as indigenous people as Nagas were never Indian since time immemorial. He reminded that Nagas live in their homeland inherited from their ‘great great’ ances-
tors and were never under control of anyone in their history except some forceful annexation to the British Empire and, therefore, have every right to be free for indigenous people’s right to education. Prof. Dr. A. Lanu asserted that education was a tool for change of social education and economic education and need to know how to move and where to move. He challenged the gathering that a common aim to live together as one people should be the aim of all Nagas. He also said that had the Indian Govt. not divided the Nagas by territory, Nagas might not be Indigenous people at present. Centre tightens noose around Zakir Naik over foreign funding
N E W D E L H I , AU G 1 0 (AGENCIES): The Home Ministry has initiated an inquiry against an NGO run by controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik for alleged violation of Foreign Contributions (Regulation) Act. The move comes a day after the Mumbai Police indicted Islamic preacher Naik for involvement in unlawful activities and possible terror links. A standard questionnaire has been sent to Mumbai-based Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) after preliminary inquiry found the NGO run by Naik allegedly received about Rs 15 crore during a five-year period preceding 2012. The IRF has been asked to furnish details of its bank accounts, including the designated FCRA account, and amount of foreign contribu-
tions received and utilised by it since inception, official sources said. The preliminary probe has found that most of IRF’s foreign funds came from the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and a few other Middle-East countries. The Home Ministry probe will cover the allegations that foreign funding to IRF was used for political activities. It will also look into allegation that the NGO’s funds were used to induce people towards converting to Islam and “attract” youths towards terror, the sources said. Meanwhile, sources said, legal opinion tendered recently to the Home Ministry has favoured declaring IRF an “unlawful association” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Sasikala Pushpa M A D U R A I , AU G 1 0 (AGENCIES): Expelled AIADMK leader Sasikala Pushpa, her husband and her son have been booked on a complaint of alleged illegal detention and sexual harassment by her former domestic help, police said today. All-Women Police in Pudukottai in Tuticorin district registered the case against the MP, her husband Lingeswara Thilagan and their son L Pradeep Raja based on a complaint by the woman who had worked along with her sister as domestic help in the house of Ms Pushpa, when she was the Tuticorin Mayor from 2011 to 2014, they said.
The case was registered after the Tuticorin Superintendent of Police to whom the complaint was given forwarded it to the Pudukottai All-Women Police station. The complainant alleged that she and her sister were detained and sexually harassed by the MP, her husband and their son, police said. Ms Pushpa, who reportedly slapped DMK MP Trichy Siva at Delhi airport recently, was expelled from AIADMK on August 1 by its chief Jayalalithaa on grounds of violating party principles and ethics and bringing disrepute to the party. On the same day, the MP alleged in the Rajya Sabha she was slapped by a “leader” and faced threat to her life in Tamil Nadu. Last week, Sasikala Pushpa’s husband and her son had moved the Madras High Court claiming that a case had been registered against them by Anna Nagar Police in Chennai and sought anticipatory bail. However, their petitions were disposed of by the court after the state government submitted that police had not filed the case as claimed by the petitioners.
A CCTV footage shows one of the suspect inside an ATM. The police say the men installed an electronic device in the ATMs to scan account details and pin numbers of those who came to draw money. The details went into fake cards that were used in ATMs in Mumbai. The money the gang was able to steal could amount to around 4.5 lakhs, say the police. When the police checked visuals from the ATMs used
by the people who complaint, they found the foreigners acting suspiciously. Next, they checked their records from hotels. Police sources say they are trying to establish through experts how they collected the data and whether more people were involved. All those who withdrew money from the “fixed” ATMs have been urged to change their pins.
PETA calls on NGT seeking nationwide ban on ‘manja’
N E W D E L H I , AU G 1 0 (AGENCIES): People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has filed a petition urging the National Green Tribunal to ban the use of glass coated thread ‘manja’ which is used while flying kites and sought an immediate ban on it across the country, ANI report stated. As PETA India warns, manja - which is often coated with glass, metal, or other sharp objects - poses a lethal threat to humans and animals alike. In July 2016, a man died in Ghaziabad after his throat was slashed by manja while he was riding a motorbike. In Au-
gust 2015, a man in East Delhi died after his throat was slit by manja while he was returning home on his motorbike. Thousands of birds are also killed every year when they are cut or trapped by manja, which can get caught on trees or buildings for weeks. A bird rescuer in Ahmedabad estimates that 2,000 birds including pigeons and endangered species such as vultures are injured every year during the Uttarayan festival, and 500 of them die from their injuries. According to estimates, more than 300 birds were injured and over 100 died because of

T H I R U VA N A N T H A P U R A M , AU G 1 0 (AGENCIES): On CCTV footage from ATMs in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram, three foreigners are seen reaching up and apparently tampering with the smoke alarm. Then they leave without using the machine. The odd behaviour was connected to messages that at least 50 people in the Kerala capital received from their banks on Sunday, informing that chunks of money had been withdrawn from their accounts. One of the men, Romanian Gabriel Marian, was arrested in Mumbai on Tuesday night. He has revealed an MO that was both high-tech and incredibly simple, involving at least two other Romanians, Bogdean Florian and Christan Victor. Kerala wants to ask Interpol to help catch the other two. Footage shows the men entering the ATMs and fixing an electronic device. The gang had been active for nearly two weeks, said the police, and even stayed for a while at the popular beach resort Kovalam.

U
nfortunately irregular and illegal appointments also known as “backdoor appointments” are not seen as serious offences that necessitate legal action in Nagaland but instead, the nexus of corrupt bureaucrats and politicians have made them more of a rule than the exception. Had these “backdoor appointments” involved one or two thousand then it would have been seen as a rare phenomenon and which would also mean that corruption in Nagaland had not reached terrifying levels. However, the number of people who got into government service through dubious means runs into at least 70,000 since the past one and half decade. This figure had been quoted by a government functionary a year ago. This is a record breaking job scam of Himalayan proportions for a tiny state of hardly 1.9 million but it continues despite all the hue and cry. The job scam under “backdoor appointments” was raised on many occasions and Nagaland Post had been highlighting the matter since mid-90s beginning with cash for job scam in some departments including a recruitment agency. The formation of ACAUT Nagaland has taken the level of highlighting the criminal practice to a much higher level through mass contact. In this regard, the Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court on August 5, 2016 directed the state government to adhere to its Office Memorandum issued on June 6, 2016 with regard to rules and regulations for appointments to government departments. ACAUT had filed the PIL in November 2015 that involved (as respondents) ten Government Departments- Health and Family Welfare, Social Welfare, Home Department, Rural Development, Nagaland Public Service Commission, Vigilance Commission, AG, SCERT, Higher Education and PWD, against the backdrop of series of backdoor appointments. The bitter truth is that politicians are the popular scape goat for everything bad whereas the truth is that bureaucrats are the major contributors of backdoor appointments as well as issuing table tenders to favoured persons for awarding supply and contract works. The favour may be favouritism to friends of clan members or taking commissions as kickbacks for making “mota maal” ( to borrow from the lexicon of External Affairs Minister Sushsma Swaraj. The High Court’s order is highly laudable and hopefully it will knock the government bureaucracy from its wilful slumber. The backdoor appointment issue was quite revealing when two student organisations took on each other over the issue in November 2015. The sum total of backdoor appointments under Home department (Police) from 2010 to 2015 was a whopping 7737 as per RTI replies received. The candid admission of the Nagaland Police IGP Toshitsungba Aier in 2015 grabbed headlines. The IGP (Crime) Toshitsungba Aier IPS, disclosed that there was an excess of around 1500 police personnel in the department, which caused an extra burden of Rs.50 crore. Further, the figure he quoted, at the NPSA annual conference at Chumukedima on November 26, 2015 was that 23% of the state’s NonPlan budget was spent on 26,000 police personnel. It may be mentioned that the state has the highest ration of 1:50 as against the national average of 1:500. There was also the case of bogus appointments of some three thousand employees under Department of School Education (DoSE)through irregular and fraudulent means. Even after much anger among public after “backdoor appointments” some departments have continued with the practice as recently widely publicised in the local media. In addition, thousands of crore rupees for centrally sponsored schemes have poured into Nagaland but the big question is-which segment have actually gained? The lesson? In Nagaland, no bureaucrat or offender is afraid of the law because it does not reach the high and mighty and that’s why Nagaland is called as the ‘Land of Khushi Khushi’ and least being the ‘Land of Festivals’.
DailyDevotion The Holy Suffering of the Saint Let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good… —1 Peter 4:19 Choosing to suffer means that there must be something wrong with you, but choosing God’s will— even if it means you will suffer— is something very different. No normal, healthy saint ever chooses suffering; he simply chooses God’s will, just as Jesus did, whether it means suffering or not. And no saint should ever dare to interfere with the lesson of suffering being taught in another saint’s life. The saint who satisfies the heart of Jesus will make other saints strong and mature for God. But the people used to strengthen us are never those who sympathize with us; in fact, we are hindered by those who give us their sympathy, because sympathy only serves to weaken us. No one better understands a saint than the saint who is as close and as intimate with Jesus as possible. If we accept the sympathy of another saint, our spontaneous feeling is, “God is dealing too harshly with me and making my life too difficult.” That is why Jesus said that self-pity was of the devil (see Matthew 16:2123). We must be merciful to God’s reputation. It is easy for us to tarnish God’s character because He never argues back; He never tries to defend or vindicate Himself. Beware of thinking that Jesus needed sympathy during His life on earth. He refused the sympathy of people because in His great wisdom He knew that no one on earth understood His purpose (see Matthew 16:23). He accepted only the sympathy of His Father and the angels (see Luke 15:10). Look at God’s incredible waste of His saints, according to the world’s judgment. God seems to plant His saints in the most useless places. And then we say, “God intends for me to be here because I am so useful to Him.” Yet Jesus never measured His life by how or where He was of the greatest use. God places His saints where they will bring the most glory to Him, and we are totally incapable of judging where that may be.

et another Dalit family was hacked to death because it was suspected to have eaten beef. The laboratory tests of the “beef ” showed that it was some other cattle. Some time ago, the Kerala House in Delhi was attacked by gau rakshks because beef was served there. But the most shameful aspect is that there was no repentance among the upper caste and even the leaders of the RSS, who are supposed to work for the social upliftment did not utter a word of either condemnation or sorrow. All religions indulge in social, economic or political discrimination but it is not the part of the religion itself as it is among the Hindus. And for centuries, it is going on without much challenge. There are still certain parts of India where the Dalit cannot use the road or well which are frequented by the upper caste. The worst part is that the funeral ground which the upper caste use is exclusive for them. Islam which teaches equality has also been af-
fected and the burial places of those placed high in life cannot be used by ordinary Muslims. In fact, a different kind of caste system prevails in Islam. For example, Sayyds are considered the Brahmins of the community and they practise the same kind of discrimination as the Hindus do when it comes to marriage or death. They refuse to consign the bodies at the common burial ground. In fact, an ordinary Muslim suffers from both sides—one because he is poor and, two, because he is considered not at par with the well-placed Muslims. Here, the economic factor has come into play. Post-mortem A specter haunts Nagaland
F
ifteen minutes of Assembly session! A master stroke or an act of stupidity and naivety? Guess we’ll leave that to our own imaginations! However, there is no denying the fact that there could be no ultimate mockery than that (Yes, not the first time). All problems and issues of importance have been brushed at once under the carpet. Such impunity and arrogance on the part of the Nagaland state legislators. No one to answer to, nothing to be held accountable for. Ah! Talk about life’s many blessings! It’s a one way street for all of them. For want of words (and also because I ain’t got much of a choice either..unfortunately) , allow me the unnecessary honor of addressing them as ‘our leaders’. Our leaders are of the most incapable breed and stock of all there is. They are nothing less than the feudal lords of Medieval Europe and zamindars of pre-independence India. All they do and yearn for is exploit the masses-day and night. This is what they live for-fatten themselves and their families. They go to sleep every night devising new means of extracting money and wake up in the morning with a solution to it. So, in between all these, how do you ever think or possibly imagine that there will
be any sort of development and progress in our beautiful little cursed land? Anyway, the less said about them, the better. So, let me abruptly stop here. All roads lead to Rome and all problems in Nagaland lead to one source-the public. You see, we are what is wrong with our Naga society. We have allowed our leaders to exploit us. Everything they are today is all because of us. The only way to stop such practices is to do the reverse of what we have been doing to them. Basically, there is a need to reform ourselves. We can’t go on building bridges and burning them down at the same time. There has to be a start somewhere. What better time than now? The idea is to stop selling your precious vote to the highest bidder. Your vote could be up for grabs but not for sale. If only you realized what your single (and precious) vote could do! You have every power and right in the world to determine your fate with your vote. Ah! The beauty of democracy indeed! If you want good roads, good universities, good colleges and a good transport system, start utilizing your right to vote. Don’t even think of selling it. The moment you sell it, your future is compromised. Your right to vote is your right to life-a
life of dignity and self-respect. No force on earth can stop you from voting. And also, please don’t sell your precious vote to the candidate who showers you with unlimited MC Rum and pork. The fate of Nagaland will be determined by our votes, by us-the common man. Whether the future looks rosy or bleak, it all depends on us. They come to us with promises of jobs and money but that is simply not the way of getting things done. If you so care for our future generation, start doing the right thing. If we continue to be rotten to the core, soon there will be nothing left of us and Nagaland. Our land will be exploited by outsiders and we will be slaves on our own land. Seems farfetched? Didn’t think so either! Let us stop this madness together. For, change is the only thing in this world that is constant. Step by step, things can change for the better. Let us not be on the wrong side of history where our future generation condemns us to the depths of hell. Let us be the change that we desperately want to see. There is no shortcut out of this misery that we are suffering from currently. The NBCC can do all it wants but change can never be forced upon. It must be realized by us
on our own. For all we know, the general attitude of the Naga public toward the NBCC is that of skepticism and cynicism. The NBCC has failed to live up to its name and reputation and naturally, people are upset and feel let down. Most Nagas want to know the stand of the NBCC on taxation by the NPGs on the Naga public that is so crippling our homes and the economy. So far, nothing concrete but then again, nothing surprising. But, enough of NBCC! As mentioned earlier, Nagaland needs change and ever so desperately. Change-where we are more responsible, our representatives are more accountable and where we have a transparent system in order for our society to have an all-round development and progress. Yes! This is indeed possible and it has to come from us. We need to do it for ourselves; to secure our present and future, to secure our land and our future generation. Rise up, for we have nothing to lose but only the chains of bondage! For all the sacrifices that we make-big or small-our future generation will look back on us with appreciation and might even probably say,” We are what we are, because of who they were”. Long Live Nagaland! I Longkumer
On NSF’s anti-AFSPA rally
I
salute the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) for relentlessly taking up hot burning issues that touches not only the students’ community but the general populaces of the state. And in this regard the protests rally against Armed Forces (Special Powers) Acts (AFSPA) on 11th August at Kohima is yet another milestone that will be credited to the glorious pages of the NSF. The AFSPA is widely profiled as the most controversial act in the country and the time is long overdue for this anti-people act to become history. While acknowledging the galaxy of leaders representing various civil societies scheduled to address the rally ,one name that caught my attention is the chairperson of the rally - Ms.
Rose Mary Dzuvichu. This so-called champion of women’s cause cannot take us for a ride and hold us to ransom at her whims. What perplexes me is the rationale of the rally organiser to allow a woman of doubtful character to chair such an historic event. To stretch my argument, here we have a self-proclaimed social activist, who in March 2016 filed an FIR against Mr. Neiphiu Rio, the lone Naga Lok Sabha member. Brushing aside the intent and the motivation to question the educational qualification of a three-time Chief Minister, what intrigues me was the timing of the FIR. It may be pure coincidences but I’m compelled to surmised that she filed at the behest of her pay master and political god-
father. The truth of the matter is she cannot conveniently question the lone Naga parliament member with ill motives, fancy cooked up story and at the time, be the face of the Naga people in such a big rally. This glaring double standard is unacceptable and at this juncture we cannot afford to send a wrong message outside. This is a clear textbook case of hypocrisy in public life and as a concerned citizen of the state; I cannot be a mute spectator and watch people dance to the tunes of her rhapsody’s music. Therefore, I would like to suggest that the organisers to come up with a new chairperson who have a credible image. Kuovisieo, Kohima
Stumbling blocks rather than assets
“G
reat minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” (Eleanor Roosevelt). It is necessary to discuss ideas which will promote and fulfill the aspiration of the people. Most of the times events are discussed and we only end up discussing about big shots. While very little attention or concentration is devoted to creative ideas without which there can be no progress in the society. The people of the first category ie great minds are the most wanted in the highest level. The people of the 2nd category ie average minds are of the middle strata. The people of the 3rd category ie small minds are of the grass root level. God gifted talent is the most fruitful leadership quality of a person. It is the talent which creates ideas and gives solution. There are many who call themselves leaders and can create problems but cannot provide solution. But a leader is a person who provides solution to the society.
A person may be having long organizational or technical experiences, but, that does not necessarily make him a great leader or a man of great minds. Many want high posts and fame but are qualitatively not able to perform at that level and are not useful except making physical presence. But incapability leads to hatching propaganda, confusion and destructive criticisms. The problem is that some people have too high confidence but too low capability. That means they misunderstand or overestimate their own leadership capacity. They rather prove more stumbling blocks to the progress of an organization than an asset if they are wrongly placed. However, when lowly capable persons are in majority, they also ignore or sideline the more capable persons to control an organization. In the process there will be no vacancy for the potentially capable persons and will be left out. However, such organization will collapse and will never ascend to the top of the mountain. K Thong (Achilo)
said that her party would go it alone and there is every possibility that she might return with a majority. Her advantage is that the Dalit voter obediently follows her instruction. She is the only one who can get the Dalit votes transferred to some other community. Even though the Congress has traditionally fought for social justice, Mahatma Gandhi was the only leader who believed in giving equal status to the Dalits. True, they did not like the title “Harijan” (son of God) given by him because they thought it was too patronizing. Dr Rajendra Prasad after finishing his task as the president of the constituent assembly was appointed as the food minister. He went to Gandhiji to seek his advice on his accommodation. The Mahatma, who was living then in a bhangi (sweeper) colony told him to live in the cottage next to the one he was residing. Dr Rajendra Prasad was so horrified over the idea that he went to the then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and complained on Gandhiji’s
T
suggestion. No legislation is going to help, as has been India’s experience. Ultimately, it depends on the upper caste to change its attitude. They believe in democracy but not in equality which is the integral part of the system. People in the world feel hard to believe that the country which has sent rocket to the Mars, something which the advanced countries envy, practise discrimination against human beings. Their horror is glaring when they see that a democratic country where people queue before the ballot box to choose their leader cannot get over the prejudice which they have inherited from the time even before the British who divided the society caste-wise and religion-wise to make their rule easy. Whatever parliament does to eliminate this malady will not help until the upper castes realize that what they are doing is against the democratic polity which they cherish. The sooner this realization takes place, the better it would be for the country and its polity.

Rejoinder to ‘response to Rengma Hoho’
h e a r t i c l e “ Re s p o n s e t o Rengma Hoho” wherein, the said person highlighted some points holds no truth. There is only one CRPF gate at Rengmapani and the proposed Foothill Road (FHR) does not pass through it. There is another SSB gate at Yampha village which it passes. However, such gate is also necessary in FHR for controlling illegal activities n smugglers. While certain development is proposed, safety should also be considered, therefore, this check gate by central force along the proposed FHR is to be appreciated by law abiding citizens as they mean no harm unless one practices unlawful activities. Moreover, bandhs in Assam
does not affect the jurisdiction of Rengmapani in any manner. There is no record of a single person being harassed/manhandled by Assam police or CRPF personnel while traversing Rengmapani as the said village is entirely and completely under Tseminyu sub-division, Nagaland. Infact, the officers and personnel’s of CRPF stationed at Rengmapani are one of the best disciplined and co-operative force. The reasons for blatant lies by the said Hd. GB are best known to him. Anyone believing in the imagery theories and tales of the Viniho may come and experience the truth by himself. Alo Rengma, Dimapur

Humane touch missing in J&K, key to curb unrest: SC
NEW DELHI, AUG 10 (AGENCIES): On a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out+ to the people of Kashmir asserting the Centre’s commitment to “insaniyat (humanity), jamhuriyat (democracy) and Kashmiriyat”, the Supreme Court expressed concern over the situation and said there was lack of a humane approach towards the month-long unrest+ in the valley. The valley has been on the boil since the killing Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani+ on July 8 with clashes between protesters and security forces claiming 55 lives and leaving scores injured. A bench of Justices P C Ghose and Amitava Roy said: “There must be a humane approach towards the problem and it is now missing. People should be treated with love and affection but it is lacking at present and it must be ensured by the government.” The court passed the observation while hearing a plea of the state seeking stay of contempt proceedings initiated by a local court against Srinagar’s Senior SP for not registering an FIR against a DSP who had allegedly shot down a 22-year old youth, Shabir Ahmad Mir, by barging into his home on July 10.
A Srinagar court had directed the SSP to lodge the FIR and initiated contempt proceedings against him for not complying with its order, which was upheld by the J&K High Court. The lower court had issued NBW against the SSP and he was arrested and brought before the court for not complying with the order. The court referred the matter to the HC to initiate contempt proceedings, prompting the state government to rush to the Supreme Court. Appearing for the state government, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi refuted the allegation that police had killed the youth at his residence and told the bench that he was hit when security forces opened fire to control a violent crowd of protesters. He said a police officer could not be prosecuted for taking such action. “The medical certificate indicates that the deceased only had one entry wound, which totally negates the allegation that he was shot from point blank range. It is submitted that in case, the deceased was shot, as alleged, from a point- blank range, the bullet would have pierced the body left an exit wound as well,” he said.

NEW DELHI, AUG 10 (IANS): Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not speaking in parliament about the month-long deadly unrest in the Kashmir Valley and urged the government to integrate hearts and minds of people of the “integral part of India” to solve problems there. Azad initiated a debate in the Rajya Sabha over Kashmir that came after over a month of unrest which has left more than 55 people dead and thousands injured in the valley. The Leader of Opposition criticized Modi’s absence from the house during the sensitive debate, saying “the Prime Minister is so close, yet so far”. “The Prime Minister reaches the parliament (complex) everyday at 10 a.m. He stays in his (parliament) office till 6 p.m. His room is barely a minute and a half from the Rajya Sabha,” Azad said. The Congress leader also lashed out at Modi for speaking on Kashmir at a rally in Madhya Pradesh and not in parliament, a day after the Prime Minister appealed for peace in the restive valley. Azad expressed concern over the violence in Kashmir but stressed the government should endeavour to win hearts and minds of the valley people and stop using force, including pellet guns, against protesters. “We always say Kashmir is an integral part of
The reactors at Kudankulam are being built by the NPCIL and Russia’s Atomstroyexport company, a subsidiary of Rosatom (the regulatory body of the Russian nuclear complex). The Indian government signed a contract with the Soviet Union to build the plant in 1988, but construction started only in 1997 due to the political and economic upheaval in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The construction of the first two units were later halted in September 2011 following protests by villagers around the plant. Work at the plant finally resumed in March 2012. And now it’s days away from generating energy. After interventions at both centre and state levels the issue was resolved. “In dedicating Kudankulam nuclear power plant we mark another historic tie between India and Russia. Five more units with 1,000 MW each is planned at the same site,” said Modi. “Kudankulam reactor is a monument to the friendship between India and Russia. Dedication of the Kudankulam power plant is a milestone in Indo-Russian friendship,” said Jayalalithaa In December 2014, KKNPP Unit-I was declared commercial operation from midnight of December 31, 2014.
NEW DELHI, AUG 10 (AGENCIES): The RSS, in a damage control exercise, today called an urgent meeting of the BJP’s Dalit MPs to discuss how to restore the Centre’s image that has taken a beating after a string of atrocities against dalits, Times Now reported. The RSS - which is the BJP’s ideological mentor reportedly told the party’s MPs that they need to step up contact and outreach with Dalit communities around the country. In recent months, incidents of ‘cow vigilantism’ have been on the rise. Dalits have been the target of ‘ gau rakshaks ‘ or ‘cow protection’ groups. The RSS has felt compelled to step in after some ‘gau rakshak’ groups said they did not agree with PM Modi’s weekend condemnation of atrocities against Dalits. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad - which is also part of the RSS family like the BJP is - has also seemed uncomfortable with Modi calling gau rakshaks “people who do business in the name of cow protection”. The RSS called the emergency meeting at New Delhi’s Gujarat Bhawan, even as overnight reports said that in yet another incident, a mob of ‘cow protectors’ in Andhra Pradesh beat up two Dalits after they skinned a cow that had died after being electrocuted. In recent months, opposition parties have slammed the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ignoring atrocities against Dalits by ‘cow protectors’.

(From p-1) before the attainment of statehood-- on January 21, 1972 and their descendants residing in Manipur. It further defined “non-local people” as a person who is a citizen of India but not covered under the clause defining the local people. The proposed bill has been set to regulate non-local people coming to the state and to provide protection, maintenance of socio-economic and cultural balance of the local populace and for maintenance of peace and public order in the state of Manipur. Once the bill becomes and act, every non-local people entering the state would have to register him/herself with the registration authority (director of Registration of Non-local People and Tenants) which would be set up by the state government. The cabinet decided to put up the proposed bill online through the home department, to seek public opinion/suggestions. The bill would be introduced in the next state Assembly session. The cabinet has also decided to approach the Governor to summon the 14th session of the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly from September 2.
NEW DELHI, AUG 10 (AGENCIES): Tourism minister Dr. Mahesh Sharma has told the Lok Sabha that State governments and Union Territory administrations are primarily responsible for ensuring the safety of visitors to tourist sites, a ministry statement said on Wednesday. Establishing ‘selfie danger zones’ is one of the preventive measures they can take, he said. In a written reply to a query, Minister of State for Culture and Tourism Dr. Mahesh Sharma said it was incumbent upon states and UTs administrations to take such precautions to avoid “untoward” incidents. He also said his ministry took up, “the issue of ensuring safety and security of all tourists, domestic and international, with the State Governments and UT Administrations from time to time.” Sharma added that the governments of Karnataka and Maharashtra had informed the tourism ministry that they’d “taken measures to create awareness through signages indicating danger

There should be integration of minds and hearts,” Azad said. “Kashmir has had curfew for over 30 days. Many have been killed. Thousands are injured,” Azad said. “If something happens in Africa, you (Modi) tweet, Pakistan is an enemy nation, still you speak when something happens there. It is good to show sympathy with all. But the crown of India (Kashmir) is burning. You must have felt the heat on your head, if not the heart.” He asked the government not to see the valley as a mere law and order problem
and called for an all-party meeting to discuss the issue. He also asked for a delegation to be sent to Kashmir to find a political solution to problems of the people there. “Kashmir is a complex issue. Politics comes first, economics second, employment after that. If we talk about electricity, roads and water, and not about politics, it will be wrong.” A BJP MP from the state, Shamsher Singh Manhas, participating in the debate, was aghast over “everyone is speaking about Kashmir and not Jammu”. “Jammu and Kashmir is not about Kashmir only. While multi-brand retail has been resisted by local players, global giants such as Amazon have entered India through the ‘marketplace’ model, where they provide a platform for Indian retailers to sell their products. New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI): Riding on firm global trends and increased buying by domestic jewellers to meet festive season demand, gold prices surged by Rs 310 to Rs 31,280 per ten grams at the bullion market Wednesday. Silver too regained Rs 1,050 to Rs 47,350 per kg on increased offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said sentiment bolstered after gold rebounded from the lowest in a week in global markets as the dollar weakened, boosting demand for the precious metal as a store of value. Globally, gold rose 1.1 percent to USD 1,355.41 an ounce and silver by 1.9 percent to USD 20.19 an ounce in Singapore. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 percent and 99.5 percent purity spurted by Rs 310 each to Rs 31,280 and Rs 31,130 per 10 grams, respectively. The precious metal had gained Rs 70 yesterday. Emirates mishap survivor wins lottery Dubai, Aug 10 (PTI): A 62-year-old Indian, who was on board the Emirates plane that crash-landed here, might be the luckiest man alive as he has won a million dollars in lottery, just six days after miraculously surviving the accident. Mohammad Basheer Abdul Khadar, from Kerala, was among the 300 people on board the Emirates flight EK521 which crash landed and burst into flames at the Dubai airport last Wednesday. The Dubai expatriate struck gold yesterday when his lucky ticket number 0845 was drawn in the Dubai Duty Free Millennium Millionaire at Concourse A at Dubai International Airport, winning him USD 1 million (Dirham 3.67 million), Gulf News reported. Khadar had purchased the ticket on Eid on his way for a vacation with his family
in Thiruvananthapuram. A fleet administrator with a car dealer group in Dubai, Khadar had made it a habit to purchase a raffle ticket whenever he travelled to his home country. Khadar became a millionaire after purchasing his 17th ticket, just four months before he was due to retire in December, he told the daily. “I have been working in Dubai for 37 years, and I have always felt like this is my country. I live a simple life, and now that it’s my time to retire, I feel like God gave me a second life when I survived the plane crash, and blessed me with this money to follow all this up by doing good things,” Khadar said. Khadar said he plans to return to India after his retirement to find a job that involves helping people in need. He wants to help children

in Kerala who are in need of financial help and medical support. “I am blessed to have finally won with Dubai Duty Free and can’t wait to share the news with my family. If you ask me about my plans, I obviously want to help the children in Kerala who are less fortunate than others and need some financial help and medical support,” he said. Khadar, a grandfather, ear ns Dirham 8,000 (Rs 1,45,212) a month. However, he had to struggle a lot for the treatment of his 21- year-old son who became paralysed after an accidental fall just 13 days after birth. “I had to spend a lot of money on his treatment. Some years back I had to take a loan of Rs 1.8 million for a major surgery for him. I have managed to pay it back,” said Khadar.
Pakistan ups security on Aug 14 terror threats
Zia gets bail in 9 cases including sedition
Islamabad, Aug 10 (PTI): Pakistan has stepped up security after a terror alert warned of possible Taliban attack at border crossing points with India on the country’s Independence Day on August 14, officials said today. The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab province has sent a memo to the chief secretary that Taliban were planning to target Wagah or Ganda Sindh border crossings between August 13 and 15. It claimed that two suicide bombers had been tasked by Mualana Fazlullah, the fugitive chief of Taliban who is hiding in Afghanistan, to attack Independence Day parade at the border points.
Dhaka, Aug 10 (PTI): In a relief to Bangladesh’s former premier and opposition leader Khaleda Zia, a court today granted her bail in nine cases, including one for sedition and others for a deadly transport blockade. Metropolitan Sessions Judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah granted Zia bail in the sedition case filed by a Supreme Court lawyer over her remarks against liberation war martyrs. Speaking at a discussion on December 21 last year, 70year-old Zia had “expressed doubts” about the casualty figures of the 1971 liberation war with Pakistan. Zia’s BNP is a crucial ally of fundamentalist Jamaat-e- Islami, which was opposed to Bangladesh’’s independence from Pakistan. T h e r u l i n g Awa m i
B a g h da d, A u g 1 0 (AFP): A fire tore through the maternity ward of one of Baghdad’s largest hospitals today, killing at least 12 premature babies, medical and security officials said. Jassem Lateef al-Karkh, from the Baghdad health directorate, told reporters only seven babies could be saved and were taken to another ward in the Iraqi capital. Health ministry spokesman Ahmed al-Rudeini told AFP the blaze at the Yarmuk hospital in west Baghdad was started by an electrical fault just after midnight (2100 GMT Tuesday). “Twenty-nine women patients who were in the same ward were evacuated to other hospitals,” he said. Security services sealed off the area as forensic teams searched the gutted ward and angry relatives massed outside, waiting for information from the authorities. Charred incubators could be seen outside one of the entrances to the hospital, access to which was strictly controlled by the police.
Khaleda Zia League, 1971 veterans and members of the martyred families had sharply reacted to Zia’s comments with some of them even calling her as the “agent of Pakistan”. The court came up with the bail order after Zia surrendered before it seeking bail

The court also granted bail to Zia in eight arson attack cases filed with Draussalam Police Station. Zia and 27 leaders and officials of her Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP) have been accused of instigating the firebombing in Dhaka as part of a deadly campaign against the government. The attack took place during a nationwide blockade of roads, rail and waterways, which Zia called to try to force Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and pave the way for new elections. They are Billal Hossain, Ibrahim Hossain, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Abdul Aziz Sarder, Qazi Ohidul Islam alias Wahidur Salam, Aziz Sarder and Abdul Khalek Morol. Another accused, Lutfor Morol, died of cardiac arrest in police custody on May 6 this year. Most of the convicts belong to Jamaat-e-Islami, a party which openly opposed Bangladesh’s liberation. Bangladesh has so far executed four war crimes convicts since the process began to try the top Bengali perpetrators of 1971 atrocities in line with the electoral commitment of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2008.

Dhaka, Aug 10 (PTI): A former Bangladeshi MP of fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami party was today sentenced to death while seven others jailed until death by a special tribunal for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 liberation war against Pakistan. Sakhawat Hossain, former MP Jessore district, was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal on charges of abduction, confinement, torture, rape and murder. The three-member panel of judges of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) led by Justice Anwarul Haque said the authorities can execute the verdict by hanging or using the firing squad, Dhaka Tribune reported. Hossain was a central committee member of Islami Chhatra Sangha, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami party at the time, and was accused of acting as a local commander of a group that aided Pakistani soldiers. Tr ump defended his comments Tuesday, insisting that he was telling his supporters to use the power of their vote to stop Clinton from appointing justices who could restrict their Second Amendment rights. “This is a political movement. This is a strong political movement, the Second Amendment,” Trump said to Fox News’ Sean Hannity. “And there can be no other interpretation. Even reporters have told me. I mean, give me a break.” But Trump’s controver-

Mike Pence, told WCAU TV in Philadelphia that “Donald Trump was very clear.” “Hillary Clinton’s made it very clear that she wants to see changes in the right of lawabiding citizens to keep and bear arms,” he said. “(What) Donald Trump is clearly saying is that people who cherish that right, who believe that firearms in the hands of lawabiding citizens makes our communities more safe, not less safe, should be involved in the political process and let their voice be heard.” Tim Kaine, Clinton’s running mate, said Trump’s remarks show “just no understanding for the role of leader.” “I just think it’s a window into the soul of a person who is tempermentally not suited for the task,” he said. Trump sought to rally voters Tuesday highlighting the next president’s role in selecting Supreme Court justices and his commitment to the Second Amendment.

North Carolina, Aug 10, (Agencies): Donald Trump set off a fierce new controversy Tuesday with remarks about the right to bear arms that were interpreted by many as a threat of violence against Hillary Clinton. “Hillary wants to abolish -- essentially abolish the Second Amendment. By the way, if she gets to pick, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know,” Trump said. He added: “But I tell you what, that will be a horrible day, if Hillary gets to put her judges in, right now we’re tied.” Tr ump’s ambiguous comments alarmed some political observers as to whether he was threatening her life or calling for increased political activity. Robby Mook, Clinton’s campaign manager, issued a two-sentence statement in response to Trump. “This is simple -- what Trump is saying is dangerous. Ed Townsend’s relatives are asking for a jury to decide if they’re owed damages. “The Defendants copied the heart of Let’s and repeated it continuously throughout Thinking,” the court papers claim. “The melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic compositions of Thinking are substantially and/ or strikingly similar to the drum composition of Let’s,” it says. There’s been no response yet from Ed Sheeran or his record label. The lawyer representing the Marvin Gaye estate told Newsbeat they were “aware” of comparisons with the 1973 hit. early 10 million people in Britain would seriously consider giving up their TV license in favour of a streaming service, a new study has found. The debate about TV licenses has become increasingly prominent in recent months after the UK government ruled in May that all BBC iPlayer users will need a TV license from September 1. It was initially thought that these changes would not come into place until next year. Currently, a loophole in the system allows viewers to watch the online service regardless of whether they’ve paid their license or not. A new study from Broadband Genie has found that 39% of its participants would be in favour of cancelling their TV license in favour of subscribing to a streaming service. This statistic has since been applied to the proportion of the UK population who currently pay for a TV license, suggesting that, should these figures be realised in the near future, nine million people in Britain would stop paying their license fee. The study suggests that, should that happen, the cost to the BBC would be an estimated £1.4 billion in revenue.

The music giant launched its streaming service, Apple Music, in the country yesterday (August 8), offering users subscription plans that account to roughly $7.99 (£6.15) a month for individual plans and $11.99 (£9.20) a month for family plans. These plans are preceded by Apple Music’s customary free threemonth trial. But, as reported by Digital Music News, Apple have also now removed paid downloads from their service in the country. Introducing a new version of iTunes to the country yesterday, while the service made Apple Music available to its South Korean customers, it also took away their ability to purchase individual songs and albums on iTunes. South Korea is the eightlargest music market in the world, and Apple Music’s delayed launch in the country is considered to be something of a surprise in the streaming industry.

Ashwin, Saha hit tons to power India ahead
Ravichandran Ashwin (L) and Wriddhiman Saha both scored hundreds to put India in the strong position on Thursday.
G ro s I s l e t, Au g 1 0 (Agencies): Ravichandran Ashwin and Wriddhiman Saha completed memorable hundreds as they stretched their overnight stand to take India to 345 for 6 after lunch on Day Two of the third Test against the West Indies here on Wednesday. Resuming their batting at 234/5 on another sunny day, Ashwin remained unbeaten at 117 from 292 balls while and Saha departed after scoring a brilliant 104 (227) with 13 boundaries. The visitors have the upper hand in the game largely due to the efforts of Ashwin (117 not out) and Saha (104), who batted out another session to stretch their partnership to 218 runs before the latter was out. Both Saha and Ashwin once again looked sturdy and
intent to play for time. The ball was still new, as Alzarri Joseph (2-54) and Shannon Gabriel (1-82) started off proceedings. But it seemed the pitch had calmed down a bit since day one as there was not much bite in the West Indies’ bowling this morning. Saha got to his third Test half-century off 135 balls, and thereafter India’s 250-mark came up in the 97th over. But the two batsmen were still not looking to get on with the scoring rate as they looked to settle down and play a long innings that would give their team the upper hand once again. They were helped in this endeavour by some wayward bowling from Miguel Cummins (0-54) and Gabriel, while skipper Jason Holder (0-34) himself wasn’t too penetrative either. Roston Chase (2-50)
Delhi Dynamos to play friendly tie vs West Bromwich

West Bromwich Albion FC has been a brother club to Delhi Dynamos, and we will continue to take this association forward by many more developments in the near future.” he added. Delhi Dynamos has associated itself with seven social causes as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The friendly match will garner proceeds towards multiple charitable foundations, the release added.
meanwhile persisted with his leg-stump line, bowling to a predominantly leg-side field to Ashwin, and thus looking to dry up the runs. The two batsmen didn’t mind as only 21 runs came in the first hour of play spanning 13 overs. However in the second hour, the scoring rate finally picked up a bit as a more-confident Saha played some fine shots. He wasn’t too aggressive, but looked positive against the pacers and looked to attack Chase whenever possible, as he quickly caught up in the nervous 90s with his teammate. A s h w i n t h o u g h wa s dropped on 92, as he hit Chase straight to Leon Johnson at short leg in the 110th over. Thereafter he lingered on quite a bit, especially on 99, and it helped bring up the 150-mark of the duo’s partnership off 358 Rio de Janeiro, Aug 10 deliveries. Real laid siege to the opposition goal for most of the additional 30 minutes and Sevilla needed Rico to pull off save after save. Carvajal’s memorable late goal then meant Sevilla were beaten in the Super Cup for the third year in a row.

Money key to boxing return: Pacquiao
London, Aug 10 (Agencies): Former eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao has admitted money is the reason for his return to the ring. He was elected to the Senate of the Philippines in May but is coming out of retirement to fight welterweight champion Jessie Vargas in November. “Boxing is my main source of income. I can’t rely on my salary as a public official,” said Pacquiao, 37. “I’m helping the family of my wife and my own family, as well. Many people also

Rio Olympics: USA tops table on day 5, China second Jitu, Nanjappa Bombayla reaches pre-quarters crash out in individual women’s recurve
Michael Phelps celebrates his victory.
Games to 26 (21 gold medals) -- which equals what India as a country has achieved since it started participating in 1900. Phelps won the first gold of the day in the 200-metre butterfly, his favourite event, and then led his team to victory in the 4x200 freestyle relay. In the 200-metre event he clocked 1:53.36, while in the relay, the team finished at 7:00.66. Overall, the 31-year-old athlete has racked up 26 Olympic medals, 22 of them gold and two each of silver and bronze. In contrast, India’s tally from the 33 Summer Games it has participated in is: Nine golds, six silvers and 11 bronze medals. Some of the countries he’s gone past in the process include Austria (19 gold medals), Argentina (18), Jamaica (17), Iran (15), Czech Republic (14), Mexico (13) and more than double that of India (9). No athlete has won more medals than Phelps has and to add to his impressive feat, only around ten countries have won more gold medals since he won his first gold in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Rio de Janeiro, Aug 10 (IANS): Shooter Jitu Rai’s campaign at the Rio Olympics ended on a disappointing note on Wednesday when he finished 12th to miss qualifying for the finals of the 50 metre Pistol Men’s event at the Olympic Shooting centre here. Another Indian shooter Prakash Nanjappa also finished a lowly 25th to crash out of the quadrennial extravaganza. Jitu consistently managed to hit the bull’s eye on nine occasions in what is considered as his pet event and his cumulative scores after the six series qualification round read 92, 95, 90, 94, 95 and 88 to total 554. But a poor sixth series cost him the berth to the finals while Nanjappa never really looked in the hunt with a score of 547 to bow out of the event. Jitu started the first series at the second spot with a perfect 10 and then went on to fire 37 from four rounds to find himself at the 11th spot. The army marksman then picked himself up in the final rounds to get to a cumulative score of 92. Jitu bounced back in the second series with three consecutive 10s to rise to the fifth spot and take his cumulative score to 95. His third series started with a perfect 10 followed by two 9s. But a six off the fourth shot saw him drop him to 12th only to quickly recover to seventh with two perfect 10s and take his total to 90. Jitu retained his seventh spot in the fourth series totalling 94 and then kept rising to the fifth spot in the fifth series with a cumulative score of 95. But a nightmarish start to the sixth series saw him scoring 26 in three shots. He followed up his first three shots with a 10 to climb up to fourth spot only to slip to 7seventh after a paltry 8 from his seventh shot. A terrible 7 in the next shot dipped him further to 12th to end his campaign.
Rio de Janeiro, Aug 10 (Agencies): Michael Phelps won two more finals to take his historic all-time record load to 21 golds and cement his legendary status. In doing so, he helped United States of America (USA) to extend its lead at the top of the Rio Olympics medal tally on day five– with 27 medals (10 Gold, 8 Silver, 9 Bronze). China is second with 17 medals (8 Gold, 3 Silver, 6 Bronze) followed by Hungary at 6 medals (4 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze) rounding off the top three. Australia is in fourth place with four gold and five bronze while Russia moved down in fifth place with three gold, six silver and three bronze medals. Phelps, who had won the 4X100m relay event, secured the 200m butterfly event after some fierce competition from Japan’s Masato Sakai to touch the wall in 1min 53.36. Tamas Kenderesi of Hungary won the bronze, reports NDTV. Phelps continued his incredible run by bagging his 21st gold medal of his incredible Olympic career, anchoring the
United States to victory in the 4x200m freestyle relay. Phelps, who had produced a superb victory in the 200m butterfly, led the United States home for a win in 7min 0.66sec. Phelps, who turned 31 in June, is the oldest in terms of competitive swimming. Over the past 10 editions of the Olympics, the oldest athlete to swim in the finals for the same events in which Phelps is scheduled to compete has been 29 years old, with the average age just under 22 years old. China’s Chen Ruolin shrugged off the colour-change in the diving pool to claim a record-equaling fifth gold medal in the women’s synchronized 10m platform, with partner Liu Huixia. For Hungary, Katinka Hosszu snared her third gold medal at the Rio Olympics on Tuesday with a gut-busting win in the women’s 200m individual medley final.
Aussie women thrash India 6-1
Armstrong completes hat-trick of time-trial golds
Rio de Janeiro, Aug 10 (IANS): The Indian women’s hockey team was outplayed 1-6 by higher-ranked Australia in its third group stage match as the morale-sapping crunching defeat raised big doubts over qualification for the quarterfinals of the Olympic Games here on Wednesday. The difference in class and quality between the two teams was clearly on display as World No.3 Australia scored through Kathryn Slattery (fifth minute), Georgina Morgan (ninth), Jane Claxton (35th), Georgina Parker (36th), Jodie Kenny (43rd and 46th). It was world No.13 India’s second loss in three matches and they are now fifth in the Pool B standings. They will face world No.5 United States (Thursday) and world No.2 Argentina (Saturday). India found the going tough from the start against Australia, who were determined to open their account following losses to Britain and the US. Australia attacked with regularity and intruded the Indian circle with using both the flanks to the maximum. Australia got a penalty corner just five minutes into the game and drag-flick even though was blocked by Indian goalkeeper Savita but Slattery whacked the ball home from a tight angle. India responded early by earning a penalty corner but to no avail. But Australia again came attacking inside the Indian circle and found their second goal in the ninth minute via a penalty corner. Even though the second quarter didn’t fetch any goals for the Australians, it was a story of the Indians doing desperate defending. Australia further raised the level in the third quarter and found couple of goals in the 35th and 36th minutes through field goals from Morgan and Claxton. There were further troubles for India as one while defending a penalty corner, the ball touched the legs of a defender, who was behind the goalkeeper, resulting in a penalty stroke. Kenny stepped up and successfully blasted past Savita, before the former converted a penalty corner to make it 6-0. T. Anuradha Devi scored a consolation goal in the 60th minute on a day that gives India coach Neil Hawgood to plenty to think about.
With 26 career Olympic medals, Phelps equals India’s record
Ace US swimmer Michael Phelps won two more Olympic golds here late on Tuesday, taking his total career medals tally in the Summer
RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 10 (Agencies): Veteran American Kristin Armstrong completed a remarkable Olympic cycling hat-trick of gold medals after coming out of retirement for the second time to win the women’s 29.7km time-trial in Rio on Wednesday. Just a day before she turns 43, Armstrong added to her gold medals from Beijing and London to become the first cyclist to win three Games titles in the same discipline. “I don’t have words to describe it. When you’ve already been two times at the pinnacle of the sport, why risk coming
back for the gold medal? The best answer I can give is that I can,” said Armstrong, who retired after each of her two previous Olympic success, only to come back in search of more glory. In wet and windy conditions, she posted a time of 44min 26.42sec to edge out Russian Olga Zabelinskaya, who only returned from an 18month doping suspension last year, by 5.55sec, with Olympic road race champion Anna van der Breggen of the Netherlands third at 11.38sec. Armstrong said she was inspired by her American team-
mate Mara Abbott’s near miss in the road race, when she was heading for gold only to be caught 150 metres from the line and settling for fourth. “Today the stars aligned. I knew it was going to be a close race. My coach said to me, ‘OK, you decide what colour medal you want to have.’ “I dug so deep. I thought about Mara, and I gave everything for her in the final 5km. To hear the national anthem on the podium, that’s my favourite part of the Olympics,” added Armstrong, who was greeted at the finish with a hug from her five-year-old son Lucas.
Laishram Bombayla
Rio de Janeiro, Aug 10 (PTI): Experienced Indian archer Laishram Bombayla Devi advanced to the prequarterfinals of the women’s individual recurve competition after defeating Chinese Taipei’s Lin Shih-Chia at the Rio Olympics here today. Playing in her third Olympics, the 31-year-old from Manipur, who finished 24th in the ranking round, dished out a dominating show to get the better off Lin 6-2, in the 1/16 elimination here. Earlier in the 1/32 elimination round, the Indian had rallied her way to beat Austria’s Laurence Baldauff 6-2. Bombayla, who had lost in the second round of women’s individual recurve event at the London Olympics, outclassed Lin 27-24, 27-24, 26-27, 28-26 to reach the prequarterfinals. Up against Lin, who had already clinched a bronze medal in the women’s team event, Bombayla started with a 10 and then hit 8 and 9 to total 27 as against 24 (8, 7, 9) of her opponent. The Indian scored 8, 9, 10 against Lin’s hat-trick of 8s to clinch the second set. In the third set, the Chinese Taipei girl hit the bull’s eye twice even as Bombayla came up with a 7 and 9 in the first two shots. In
the final shot, the Indian hit a 10 but that was not enough to win the set. In the fourth set, Bombayla once again produced a perfect score of 10 and then hit 9 twice against Lin’s 7, 9, 10 to seal the issue in her favour. E a r l i e r, B o m b a y l a showed tremendous nerves as she bounced back after losing the first set to outclass Laurence in the second, third and fourth set in the first round. Bombayla, who was the best Indian performer in the women’s team event, scored a 24-27, 28-24, 27-23, 26-24 win in the 1/32 elimination round. The 41-year-old Laurence started off well with a hat-trick of 9s in the first set to get the better of the Indian, who started off with a 9 but then shot 7 consecutively. However, Bombayla hit the bulls eye to start the second set on a dominating note and then produced consecutive 9s to bounce back into the contest. She produced a hattrick of 9s in the third set to lead 4-2, before sealing the contest with a series of 9, 9, 8 in the fourth set. India’s Atanu Das had also entered the pre-quarterfinals of the Individual men’s recurve event yesterday.

Boxer Vikas Krishan advances to pre-quarters RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 10 (PTI): Former Asian Games gold medallist Vikas Krishan (75kg) gave a perfect start to India’s boxing campaign in the Olympics, beating American greenhorn Charles Conwell to enter the pre-quarterfinals here on Tuesday. The 24-year-old Vikas defeated the Olympic debutant 3-0 in his opening contest, which came alive only in the final three minutes, to make the last-16. The 18-year-old Conwell, who walked in to hostile boos from the local crowd, struggled to launch an attack on the Indian in the opening round. Vikas, on the other hand, used his right straights and uppercuts to good effect in the first three minutes. Vikas dropped his guard quite early in the bout but Conwell’s attempts at capitalising on it did not quite work out as he landed into a well-laid trap by the counter-

Vikas seemed more assured in the second round and concentrated on breaking down Conwell’s defence by targetting his torso. Although the judges were
divided in awarding the round to the former World Championships bronze-medallist, Vikas had done enough to secure himself the handy lead going into the final round. After being seemingly
clueless and fetching two cautions for bending excessively in the first two rounds, Conwell gathered himself in the final three minutes to land a couple of crisp jabs but the effort came too late in the day.
