Correspondent

MON/DIMAPUR, AUG 19 (NPN): Indian army commandos, reportedly from the para commando unit, exchanged heavy gun-fire with cadres of the NSCN (K) on Friday wee hours near Throilu, a Konyak village, located inside Myanmar. As per police and district administration sources, there was no casualty reported from both the sides. According to reports, the incident took place at around 3.30 a.m. when security forces reportedly crossed the international border some 2 ½ kms, from border pillar no. 151 located at Chenmoho village and launched an attack on the outpost of the NSCN (K). The exchange of fire lasted for

nearly three hours. “There was heavy exchange of fire between NSCN (K) cadres and Army personnel. The incident was reported early in the morning. As of now, no casualties have been reported,” Yangba Konyak, SP Mon told IANS. S P M o n , A d d l S P, Konyak Union president, Asst. commandant of the Village Guards and SDO Chen reached the border area and camped at Chenmoho village to take stock of the situation. Meanwhile, when contacted, military intelligences sources refuted NSCN (K)’s claim that around five para commandos were gunned down. There were also reports of reinforcement being sent to the area from both the NSCN (K) and Indian army side.

5-6 commandos killed, claims NSCN (K)

In a press statement issued to the media houses, NSCN (K) MIP has claimed that the “Naga army cadres gunned down 5-6 Indian army commandos” in heavy exchange of fire, that took place on Friday from 3.30 a.m. to 6 a.m. The MIP said its cadres manning the forward security post thwarted the attack by the 12 Para commandos of the India army after they intruded in to Naga Myanmar area. The commandos tried to launch an attack “after walking one and half hour into Naga Myanmar area, after crossing Thorloi the first border village well inside Naga Myanmar.” However, MIP said the Naga army first spotted the commandos and fired upon the advancing team, killing five to six of them. “The advancing commandos were pinned down helplessly and the rest ran helter-skelter in commotion. The random and blank retaliation proved futile because of our well defended higher position,” MIP stated. It further claimed that the commandos tried to regroup to counter attack but were forced to retreat. NSCN (K) also claimed that the retreating commandos carried the casualties and injured on foot till the border.

No talks on cease-fire with NSCN (K): PMO sources NEW DELHI, AUG 19 (AGENCIES): Neither the Prime Minister’s office nor the Ministry of Home Affairs has asked Mizo National Front leader and former chief minister of Mizoram Zoramthanga to approach the NSCN (K) about re-entering a ceasefire agreement, reports The Asian Age quoting PMO sources. Zoramthanga on Wednesday claimed that the Centre and the Myanmarese government had urged him to initiate a peace deal with the NSCN (K). “It was the unilateral decision of the NSCN (K) to abrogate the 14-year-old ceasefire, now the government of India has no-plan to reenter into a ceasefire agreement with the NSCN (K),” an authoritative sources in the PMO told The Asian Age. Clarifying that the Centre might re-consider its decision only if the NSCN (K) comes out with any proposal expressing willingness to revive the ceasefire agreement, security sources said they didn’t have any information

Eustar Chishi Swu attends peace talks Tinakali Sumi

DIMAPUR, AUG 19 (NPN): In an interesting development, the NSCN (I-M) for the first time has included, Eustar Chishi Swu the wife of its chairman late Isak Chishi Swu at the talks held with Government of India’s Interlocutor R.N. Ravi on Friday in New Delhi. According to reliable sources, Eustar along with NSCN (I-M) leaders led by ato kilonser Th. Muivah attended the meeting. Government of India Interlocutor for Naga Talks R.N. Ravi represented the Government of India. As reported earlier, sources informed that the meeting discussed NSCN (I-M)’s demand for integration of Naga territories. It may be noted that NSCN (I-M) had virtually threatened to walk out of the process for solution unless its demand for integration of Naga contiguous areas were accepted as part of the deal. According to reliable sources, NSCN (I-M) leaders led by Th. Muivah have made it clear to government of India’s Interlocutor R.N. Ravi that they were ready to walk out of ongoing peace talks if the government of India did not consider integration of Nagas’ land. Sources disclosed that both the entities were now talking seriously about integration of Nagas land in the face of an adamant stand adopted by the NSCN (I-M) which has coined another slogan “No integration, No solution.”

on Zoramthanga’s claim on the Myamarese government approaching him. The Indian government has not asked him to approach the NSCN (K), sources confirmed. Zoramthanga was lobbying for his appointment as interlocutor in the ongoing peace talks with the insurgent groups in Assam, security sources said, adding that the government of India was firm on its stand about not engaging with any separatist group resorting to violence. Security sources further said that the government of India was in touch with Myanmar and taking initiatives to stop North East insurgent groups from using its territory for antiIndia activities. After abrogating the ceasefire in March 2015, NSCN (K) launched several attacks on Indian soldiers in Nagaland and Manipur. On June 4, NSCN (K) mounted one of the deadliest ambush on a convoy of the 6 Dogra Regiment in Manipur’s Chandel district, killing 18 Army personnel.

IMPHAL, Aug 19: Normal life in Manipur, particularly in valley districts, was paralyzed on Friday as the 48-hour bandh call in protest against arrest of former JCILPS convener Kh Ratan invoked good response on Friday. Imphal city wore a deserted look as vehicles including passenger service stayed off the roads since morning. Except smashing of a car by suspected bandh supporters at Khurai area of Imphal East district, no other untoward incident was reported on the first day of the bandh which commenced Thursday midnight. Long-distance buses including inter-state and inter-district also suspended their service for the day, giving impact of the bandh in other parts of the state including hill districts. All business establishments remained closed. The students did not turn out to schools and colleges as the institutes remained close for the day. Banks too did not function even as government offices recorded a thin attendance. Unlike the previous bandhs which were marked by violent incidents, strike supporters did not turn out on the streets to impose the bandh except at few places. In the early hour of the strike, some supporters took to the streets along the Imphal-Ukhrul road at Khurai Sajor Leikai and blocked the road. There were also reports of bandh support-

which took off from one of the forward EAC airbases was a highlight of the event. This was followed by a Su30MKI landing at the ALG. The touchdown by a frontline fighter jet of the IAF at the ALG is a ‘historic first’ in the predominantly hilly state of Arunachal Pradesh, which has several ALGs at varying altitudes. “Pasighat ALG is a strategic asset, it is capable of operating all types of aircraft and helicopters. It improves our response time. Besides, it will also increase our air operations in the eastern frontier,” Group Captain Amit Mahajan said.

Pasighat, Aug 19 (IANS): India on Friday activated its forward airfield at Pasighat in southeast Arunachal Pradesh that will allow big fighter aircraft to operate in times of emergency along the Chinese border. The upgraded Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) at Pasighat, barely 100 km from the India-China border, was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju in the presence of Air Officer Commandingin-chief of Eastern Air Command, Air Marshal C. Hari Kumar. A flypast by a formation of three Sukhoi-30 MKI Air Dominance Fighter aircraft,

tine and picturesque landscape of Pasighat, on the banks of river Siang, will become accessible to rest of the world. The unspoilt natural beauty of the area is sure to attract many a tourist, which in turn will usher in a new round of prosperity and happiness for the local population,” Mahajan said. The ALG at Pasighat was taken over by the IAF in February 2010. Previously, it was a small strip that was partly paved, partly grassy, and reinforced with perforated steel plates. It was utilised in the past for air maintenance sorties and casualty evacuation by the IAF. Commercial helicopter operations were also being undertaken from the helipads that existed earlier. Following an MoU between the Arunachal Pradesh government and the ministry of defence in June 2009, the IAF had embarked on an ambitious reconstruction plan to upgrade eight forwards airfields, including infrastructure development at an overall outlay of nearly Rs 1,000 Crore. The ALGs at Walong, Ziro, Along, Mechuka and Pasighat have since been upgraded and are operational now. Two AlGs at Tuting and Tawang are expected to be ready by the year end, while the ALG at Vijaynagar would be reconstructed as soon as road connectivity between Miao and Vijaynagar is restored.

Clearing backlog of cases challenge: CJI

Shimla, Aug 19 (IANS): Chief Justice of India T.S. Thakur on Friday said that clearing the huge backlog of cases across the country was a national challenge for the judiciary, and pointed out that such backlog attracts criticism for the entire judicial system. “Eighty per cent of the backlog is mostly in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The burden of the backlog is much here and it brings the entire judicial system to criticism,” he said. Chief Justice Thakur, who belongs to this hill state, had come to lay the foundation stone of the National Law University near this state capital. Patting the high courts of Himachal Pradesh and Kerala for less pendency of cases, the Chief Justice said the reason was the less number of judicial vacancies in these two states compared with other high courts in the country. He said against a sanctioned strength of 13 judges in the Himachal Pradesh High Court, only two posts were vacant and this helped in the speedy delivery of justice. “But in high courts where the vacancies are more, it has become a national challenge for the judiciary to clear the backlog at the earliest,” the Chief Justice of India added. Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh expressed concern over

T.S. Thakur the pendency of cases as, he pointed out, it deprived the litigants of speedy justice. He urged the Chief Justice of India to take up the issue of providing financial assistance of Rs 100 crore to the state for the completion of the National Law University. The university requires more than Rs 150 crore. Virbhadra Singh said that despite expansion of judicial set-up in the hill state, the pendency of cases has increased and added that it was the duty of the high court to clear the backlog immediately. High Court Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmed Mir said judicial education was essential for enhancing the quality and improving the standards of justice. He said judicial academies were responsible for planning and providing initial and continuous training of judges and court officers to enhance the quality of justice they dispensed.

UN chief deplores Kashmir deaths, offers to help

N e w D e l h i , Au g 1 9 (IANS): UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has deplored the deaths in the current unrest in Jammu and Kashmir and also offered his good offices to facilitate dialogue between India and Pakistan to “achieve a negotiated settlement” on all outstanding issues, including Kashmir. “I deplore the loss of life and hope that all efforts will be made to avoid further violence,” the UN Secretary-General said in his letter, obtained by IANS. “I appreciate the continued commitment of Pakistan to the peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute for the sake of regional peace and security, as you reaffirmed in your letter,” Ban said in reference to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ’s letter. “The United Nations remains convinced that it is only through dialogue that the outstanding issues between Pakistan and India, including on Kashmir, can be addressed.” “I stand ready to offer my good offices, should it be requested by both sides, to facilitate dialogue in order to achieve a negotiated settlement,” Ban wrote. In his letter earlier, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif apprised the UN chief about the “deteriorating” situation in Kashmir. Nearly 70 people have been killed and thousands more injured in the Kashmir Valley in clashes with security forces in the wake of the killing of a prominent Kashmiri separatist Burhan Wani, in a military operation on July 8.

5 held for Delhi vehicle thefts and ‘rebirthing’ cases N e w D e l h i , Au g 1 9 (IANS): The Delhi Police on Friday said it has during this month arrested five people who made up an inter-state gang involved in stealing motor vehicles in the city and “rebirthing” them to be sold in the market. Police also seized 20 luxury vehicles traced to the gang from various places, including Agra, Jaipur and Muzaffarnagar. According to the police, the accused would buy scrapped vehicles from insurance companies on auction to use their registration, engine and chassis numbers on vehicles they would steal -- a process known as “rebirthing”. The stolen vehicle, thus disguised, would then be sold off. A senior police officer told IANS: “The gang was operating in the city for about one-and-half years and was involved in 30 cases of vehicle thefts. They would steal a vehicle of the same model and make as that of the scrap vehicle they got their hands on.” “It became easier for them to put registration, chassis and engine numbers on the stolen vehicles as they had already obtained the original papers from the insurance companies.” The gang earned huge profit by selling the stolen vehicles, the officer said. All five accused were arrested in Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. They have been identified as Sanjay Singh, 39, a resident of Ghaziabad, who owned a scrap car dealership in Meerut; Mobin, 34; Salim, 30; and Kasim, 30 -- all residents of Meerut -- and Manan, 32, a resident of Jamia Nagar in Delhi. “Sanjay Singh was the mastermind who would buy scrap vehicles from the market,” the officer said.

said Sudeep Singh Sachdev, Consultant for Nephrology at Max Super Speciality Hospital. According to the Health Ministry, 2,000 new dialysis centres will be set up at districtlevel hospitals in the country within the next two years, underlining the gravity of the problem. The exact burden of chronic kidney diseases in India is still undefined, but its approximate prevalence is said to be 800 per million people (pmp). Elaborating on kidney problems in children, Sachdev said early detection is necessary for a healthy lifestyle in children to combat preventable kidney damage that may include acute kidney injury. “Difficulty in gaining weight for the child and poor growth, frequent body aches, urination difficulty or longer

time in urinating, swollen face, legs, ankles while getting up in the morning are a few symptoms of kidney problems,” said Sachdev. Piyush Rastogi, nephrologist of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, said that change in lifestyle is the major cause of the rising kidney diseases. “Lesser fluid intake, smoking, excess intake of medicines and drugs and salt intake are the reasons contributing to the rising chronic kidney diseases,” said Rastogi. “Too much of sodium can lead to hypertension, so cutting down on salt intake is better. About 1.5 to 2.3 grams daily is the prescribed amount of salt intake. Healthy fluid intake is necessary for children, especially water, to avoid kidney problems,” added Rastogi.

Bangladesh seeks details on Zakir Naik’s operations New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI): Bangladesh has sought from India details about Zakir Naik’s operations even as it said several prominent ulemas wanted action against the Islamic televangelist much before the deadly Gulshan attack last month. Bangladeshi Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, who is here on a six-day visit, said his country has cracked down on Naik’s Peace TV by banning its broadcast and indicated that it is waiting for India’s action against the controversial preacher. Inu said his country doesn’t have any evidence of links between home grown terrorists in Bangladesh with extremists outfits in India but at the same time slammed Pakistan for “harbouring terrorism”. He said Bangladesh has witnessed over 43 attacks on thinkers, bloggers and people from Sufi faith and it has been found that in almost 90 per cent cases, the attackers had links with banned Jamaat-eIslami which he alleged was a “corroborator” with Pakistani forces during the 1971 Liberation war. “From Bangladesh’s side Zakir Naik’s case has been settled. We have stopped the broadcast of Peace TV. In last one year, ulemas came up with written complaints against Naik. We are examining it. We think his teachings, in certain cases are not in compliance with the Quran or Hadith. So, that is creating confusion. “In certain cases it is

DMK holds mock assembly session Chennai, Aug 19 (IANS): Suspended DMK legislators held a mock assembly session outside the Tamil Nadu secretariat building, even as the state legislature was in session, to protest against the suspension of 80 of its 89 lawmakers from the house for a week. The opposition party has filed a court case against the suspension and it will come up for hearing on Monday, Leader of Opposition and DMK Treasurer M.K. instigating. So, we have taken our position. We have asked the Indian side to take their position and give us necessary information,” Inu told reporters. In the backdrop of reports that ISIS was gaining ground in Bangladesh, he asserted that terror networks in his country is home grown. Bangladesh had banned Naik’s Peace TV following the terror attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan Thana locality on July 1 in which 29 people were killed. About his meeting with Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu, Inu said both sides have agreed to broadcast their respective national TV channels in each other’s country. The Minister said terrorism is Bangladesh is very different from terror networks in Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Middle East as his country has a “secular” approach, but insisted that the evil has its legacy in the 1971 liberation war. “There is no so-called radicalisation in my country. So, terrorism has a top-down approach in our country. It is not like Pakistan. In my country, a few people are involved in terrorist activities. “Having said that terrorism in Bangladesh has a legacy and that legacy is the 1971 liberation war. Here Jamaat-eIslami, a party using Islam, was a corroborator with Pakistani aggressive force,” he said adding terrorism in Bangladeshi has its roots in Jamat-i-Islami and Pakistan’s ISI.

VISAKHAPATNAM, Aug 19 (PTI): Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday said nearly 800 “black spots” (accident zones) identified on national highways across the country, will be soon fixed to bring down road mishaps. Inaugurating the two-day national workshop on Road Safety here, he said the Government had identified 786 black spots on national highways and it will be set right at a cost of Rs 11,000 crore. Gadkari said at least 1.5 lakh deaths occur per year due to road accidents in the country and this can be reduced by 50 per cent in near future in co-operation with all state transport ministers.

NEW DELHI, Aug 19 (PTI): The age of “iron curtain” is over and the government needs to open up to provide swift and accurate information to the people, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore today said while asking officials to take to social media aggressively. “We need to open up. Typically, governments have been with iron curtains all around. But today time is changing, so we first need to change our mindset,” Rathore said as he inaugurated a workshop for government officials on how to use Facebook more effectively for communication. Addressing Press Information Bureau (PIB) officials who look after government’s communication outreach,

Rathore said that the process of how information is shared from decision makers to disseminators needs to get faster and social media can play a key role as it not only shapes debates on TV but also public opinion. “You cannot hide information in today’s world. You have to share that information. The idea is to send the right kind of content that people can engage with,” he said. Pointing out that often incorrect information regarding ministries and government departments goes on social media, Rathore said that on such occasions the correct facts should be provided. “That is the time you could get to the social media and correct that information. People are hungry for informa-

tion,” Rathore said. A lot of people dismiss social media, saying the debate going on there is “junk”, he said but emphasised that this very debate is even shaping what is happening on television or in the print media. “It is shaping your mind when you sit on the dining table during dinner time and do your discussions,” he added. He said that 85 per cent of central ministers are on facebook and 80 per cent ministries already have verified accounts. He, however, emphasised that even this figure needs to be improved. Apparently referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is active on social media, Rathore said that the coach has shown the way and it is now for the players to act.

Only BJP leaders become governors: Shiv Sena Mumbai, Aug 19 (IANS): The Shiv Sena on Friday questioned why only former Bharatiya Janata Party leaders are appointed as governors and Lt Governors of various states and Union Territories while BJP allies in the National Democratic Alliance are overlooked. “NDA allies like the Telugu Desam, the Shiromani Akali Dal, and the Shiv Sena are prepared to accept this responsibility. There are many experienced and senior leaders in all these parties. Nobody should grudge if a Raj Bhavan (governor`s post) comes

to them,” the Sena said in an edit in the party mouthpiece `Saamana`. However, it rued that since “it`s a government of 280 (BJP MPs), nobody will listen to the cries of the allies”. Referring to the oft-repeated demands to scrap the governor`s post, the Shiv Sena said it has been alleged in the past that the Raj Bhavans are used to house pensioners or inactive politicians who do the bidding of their political masters without batting an eyelid. During political instability in any state, the edit

piece said, the Raj Bhavans become hotbeds of political activity. With elections due in Punjab and Manipur, the new appointees -- V.P. Singh Badnore and Najma Heptullah respectively -- would get adequate opportunity to carry out their `political duties`, the Sena said. The Sena pointed out that retired defence or police personnel appointed as governors in the sensitive border states have altogether different responsibilities, given the problems of security and infiltration from across the country`s borders.

Expressing concern on increasing road accidents in the country, he said 70-80 per cent of mishaps occur due to road engineering defects. He said the best of technology would be utilised to employ best engineering systems for road construction. Also, the government will take all measures for transparent and corrupt-free system for issuance of driving licenses and certification as well as registration of vehicles, the minister assured.

As part of skill development, an institute for training of drivers, and research centres will also be established in each state. Trauma care centres besides ambulance with necessary staff will be introduced at various points on national highways, Gadkari said. Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said education, engineering, enforcement are very essential to control road accidents. He said it was important to educate children and

drivers to follow traffic rules. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu too said his government will implement best practices followed by other states to control road accidents. He attributed the reasons for increasing road accidents to over-speeding, overload of vehicles and drunken driving. The Chief Minister underlined the need for checking drunken driving at all checkposts on national and state highways.

Nagaland Post Vol. XXVI NO. 253 Dimapur, Saturday, August 20, 2016

U

Too much govt

ndeniably, the government of Nagaland’s policy to promote entrepreneurship through skill development is a positive one and it needs to be reminded, that a lot still needs to be done to provide the vital start up. However, bureaucratic rules which also means bending some when convenient and ignoring when inconvenient has not exactly helped promote the culture for genuine progress. In the past youths were sent on a study tour abroad to learn more about skill development or in some, politicians and bureaucrats doing the same but after having spent some crores of rupees, there is no visible change. It may be recalled, that promotion of entrepreneurship has been among the policies of the central government since the seventies which the state’s industries department had also been implementing (to the best of its limited ability then). The point that needs to be highlighted is that since the seventies and till today, development of entrepreneurship has been “implemented” in a variety of ways by the state government. Today, all those “successful” government-produced entrepreneurs in their thousands are not seen while some continued to draw huge subsidy and other benefits which the policy endowed. The lesson that can be drawn from the experience is that, the government cannot create entrepreneurs. The only visible impact are those involved in small ways with organic farming, widely practiced in Nagaland. This farming is suitable with rich top soil and beneficial climatic condition. Dimapur, Kohima, Tuensang and Mokokchung districts to name a few, are suitable for growing varieties of vegetables and fruits. The local vegetables are not of hybrid type and therefore not fast growing. In a competitive market, buyers want biggest and best items that are reasonably priced. To achieve the desired physical attributes, adequate research needs to be undertaken to develop fast growing varieties of vegetables to promote export. Farming in the state is still not well organized. Since most of the produce are seasonal, fruit preservation has to be thought of in order to preserve the items. The state government has realized the potential and should chart a long term objective instead of organising too many promotional tours for farmers for political mileage. Though cooperative farming exist in several districts, the quantity produced is hardly enough to meet the growing demand of the domestic market. Even in the case of skill development, so far, most of those who were benefited through government assistance, have not made much headway. Economic venture in today’s context is private entrepreneurship with the government playing the role of a catalyst in framing relevant and useful policies on taxes etc. Gone are the days of government subsidies and ‘development of entrepreneurship’. Today, the global environment provides the biggest place for business and governments play a very limited role. However in Nagaland, the government has become too obese, corrupt and inefficient and no one in authority, be it political or administrative, wants to change the system that brings windfall benefits. The catchword today is competition and to nurture the best so that the future is bright. This is a message that needs to be understood and realised. It is time to wake up to the realities and begin hard work. The plea of promoting economic development must not lead to creating of a privileged section that only widens economic disparity.

DailyDevotion Self-Awareness Come to Me… —Matthew 11:28 God intends for us to live a well-rounded life in Christ Jesus, but there are times when that life is attacked from the outside. Then we tend to fall back into self-examination, a habit that we thought was gone. Self-awareness is the first thing that will upset the completeness of our life in God, and self-awareness continually produces a sense of struggling and turmoil in our lives. Self-awareness is not sin, and it can be produced by nervous emotions or by suddenly being dropped into a totally new set of circumstances. Yet it is never God’s will that we should be anything less than absolutely complete in Him. Anything that disturbs our rest in Him must be rectified at once, and it is not rectified by being ignored but only by coming to Jesus Christ. If we will come to Him, asking Him to produce Christ-awareness in us, He will always do it, until we fully learn to abide in Him. Never allow anything that divides or destroys the oneness of your life with Christ to remain in your life without facing it. Beware of allowing the influence of your friends or your circumstances to divide your life. This only serves to sap your strength and slow your spiritual growth. Beware of anything that can split your oneness with Him, causing you to see yourself as separate from Him. Nothing is as important as staying right spiritually. And the only solution is a very simple one— “Come to Me….” The intellectual, moral, and spiritual depth of our reality as a person is tested and measured by these words. Yet in every detail of our lives where we are found not to be real, we would rather dispute the findings than come to Jesus.

rior to the advent of the British expedition to part of the Naga hills, the Nagas had a life of independence in their respective villages though disorganised. The Nagas were therefore not the subjects to any known sovereign nation till those villages were brought under the administrative control of the British, headquartered at Kohima. Having associated with the British and through the exposures to outside world in due course of time, the first enlightened Naga leaders realized the historical rights of the Nagas to be sovereign. The awareness of Naga sovereignty was intensified and Naga unity was solidified under the leadership of AZ Phizo on his becoming the President of NNC. Had the Naga political destiny being the Statehood, the Naga National Movement under NNC would have been nabbed in the bud in early 60s when Nagaland was created as a State out of 16-Points Memorandum. Yet, Nagas are destined by God to be a sovereign nation and thus the political movement survived even under the onslaught of the Indian army during the long drawn conflict. A social activist once told me that a popular anthropologist told him that the Nagas are the linkman, and this has logic. The Mongoloid stock Nagas were placed in a strategic location between the great India and the north and south-east Asia nations. The Nagas, by race, are not Indians from every aspect of life and yet the majority Nagas are Indians by nationhood, so also the relationship. Whereas, by race we are closer to people in south-east Asia nations. During winter last year, a Japanese preacher came to preach to fellow Naga Christians at Kohima. He drew the comparison of similarities between Nagas and Japanese on two aspects. He said any Naga or Japanese child when born will have greenish patch at the lower back or buttock. Secondly, both Nagas and Japanese carry their child on the back unlike others carry so in the front like kangaroos do. Perhaps, for a good purpose God has chosen Nagas to be His witnesses

M

in the midst of Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims. To be the linkage and to spread the gospel amongst the complex and heterogeneous races in this part of the world. I believe Nagas were chosen by God some 144 years ago through American Baptist missionary E.W. Clark, his wife and the evangelist Godhula. I personally do not believe that Naga sovereignty can be achieved out of war. What I believe is that Nagas do not need Naga army with destructive weapons for conflict or for defence. What I also believe is that Nagas are required to do two things: one is to have unity and the other is to send not only 10000 missionaries but much more. And we leave the issue of Naga sovereignty to God like Joshua who depended on God for conquering Jericho, and when we humble ourselves before God what is not possible with Him. Nevertheless, Nagas are tired of housing, feeding and tolerating unpatriotic activities of groups of fighters for Naga Independence. The Nagas are totally fed up with divisions and we are overburdened. At this rate, there will be no respite to the woes of common man. Neither will there be any group bring Independence despite of the immense sacrifices made by the Nagas for it. The Nagas therefore need recess. The Nagas are desperate to have quiet time without being pestered by parasites. The answer to this may be the interim arrangement approved by all stakeholders and without closing the self determination chapter. So far Naga Integration is concerned, it is permissible under Art 3 & 4 of the Constitution of India. For instance, Nagaland was created under this provision out of Assam and so also Chhattisgarh, Uttar Khan and Jharkhand and all were created out of its parent States under the clauses (b) & (d) of Art 3. Reiterating what was written earlier, NSCN(IM) cannot be blamed for not achieving Naga Independence. Not only this group but any other NNPG cannot do it in isolation because a faction cannot win sovereignty. Any group claiming

to fight for Naga independence is indeed futile, because if NSCN(IM) fails to get it, the other group will also face the same fate. There is no option except that Nagas come together as one. In view of just the above, I would not have been critical with NSCN(IM), had this group been frank with the Nagas as for the ongoing negotiation. Had the group been honest with the Nagas that Sovereignty and Integration are not grantable by India, who is there to accuse, to undermine, to misunderstand and to force them to do what is not practical. Magnanimity and admission of ground realities would have been the panacea. Open heartedness would have united the Nagas without special mediation. Unfortunately, NSCN(IM) is hell bend to have solo solution with articulated misinterpretations on what is sovereignty. Such interpretation is acceptable to NSCN(IM) and its supporters but not to the rest for the fact that that kind of sovereignty will not be recognized by other nations. Coming to my headline, whatever is the status of agreement under the 3rd August 2015 Framework, it will be under the Constitution of India. The agreement will therefore be inconclusive as it cannot become conclusive without Naga sovereignty. It will therefore be interim in nature and not final. In September 2015, a Naga scholar in a small gathering, advised that the word ‘Final’ should not be used in the agreement of NSCN(IM) and GOI. This has logic. I, as an individual, support this that so much of Naga lives and properties have been sacrificed not for a settlement under the Constitution of India. Not getting the desired target can be understandable but to nail the political issue in the coffin of Indian Constitution will be considered as national crime and betrayal. Therefore, if at all the proposed settlement of NSCN(IM) with GOI under the prevailing trend of Framework is to be concluded as ‘Final’ to the political aspiration of the Nagas, it will be a blunder. he erratic power supply in our state is nothing new and needs no highlight. Nagaland must be the worst effected state in the country to be still reeling under such an inferior and bad power supply in this age. It would not be wrong to say that we are still living like in those medieval ages without any proper power supply for most of the time in this peak summer. Ever since I was born I haven’t come across any day, month or season that an electric current does not goes off here. When there is even a slight drizzle, the current goes off. When there is even little breeze the current goes off. When it is dry season there is an excuse of water shortage in the dams, when it is summer there is excuse power of overload due to high demand. Will we have a normal supply like any other place ever in our lifetime? Our technocrats and officials blame only the public of not paying their electric bills on time or hooking current etc. but allotting meter boxes and connection should also be on time. Though the power tariff has been enhanced yet the power supply is not improving at all. While on the other hand the disgruntled and the poor public suffers each passing day in this intense heat without any current for hours and sometimes even for days. The rich people live comfortably inside their luxurious AC houses with their big generators with little or no botheration while the middle class and the poor people are the worst hit. Those who cannot afford generators and inverters are the pathetic lot. Even inverter batteries runs out as current continue to be shut out for several hours at a stretch. Old people, sick patients and little children are the most suffered lot. We cannot even let our children study in peace in this heat due to these power outages as water pours out from our bodies in few seconds. Foods in the refrigerators get spoiled as there is no current. Most of the time the power supply are shut down right from the early morning hours when people wake up eagerly to switch on their motor pumps but the current starts playing truant right from there. So washing, cleaning and cooking becomes almost impossible. Voltage is so low that water cannot be even pumped out from an ordinary motor pump. So where do we get the most basic necessity –water? To send our children to school without doing all these becomes a nightmare. It is of my earnest appeal to the power department authorities not to cut off power

The Nagas, the spade handle and the backache

ost esteemed readers, in this issue I would like to pen a reflection on the topic: The Nagas, The Spade and The Backache. What I would do in this write-up is to demythologize the typical Naga myth that those who do not bend while engaged in work can’t earn one’s livelihood. This saying is very common to almost all Naga tribes. There is truth and wisdom in it! For this reason, it is practiced down the corridors of history and till date. But stooping down for work does not necessarily mean physical stooping all the time. What our elders imply is carefulness and meticulousity in doing one’s work. Most often it is the message that we need to draw and not necessarily the physical stooping which is widely misunderstood. The problem is that it is often taken literally. There are so many people who sit comfortably and earn their livelihood. Look at the people from the plain who sit relax and do their work but they prosper much more than our traditional folks who toil in the sun and rain stooping down from morning till evening for fear of being criticized as lazy people. Often times, our people would use very short handled spades which forces the body to stoop to the lowest angle possible. The repercussion is that most people in the villages suffer from backache. Think of the season for ploughing, every

minute a person has to straighten to regain energy. Imaging of a person who has to work for about four to five hours every day in such situations, excluding the time they move up and down the hill with baskets on their heads. How would one not get backache if it is continued for years? There are people who rear cows and bulls just for meat. What if they purchase trained variety which can be used to plough the field? This can reduce a great lot of health complications. Some tribes have already started using cows and bulls for ploughing. Often the plain people are labeled as lazy for using longhandled spades. But at the end whose health is affected? It is we! Why not start using longhandled spades and plough the field and other related works? After all, the yield does not depend whether we stoop down or not! One’s energy can be preserved for long duration in the course of the work and also one’s health of backache can be prevented to certain degree. As a young boy in the village, my grandmother would ask me to apply mustard oil on her back when she return from the field. She would then ask me to massage them gently as we sit near the kitchen fire. The small mounts erupted from her spine would often frighten me, to which she and the others would laugh at me. This are results of years of strenuous works! Take for another instance,

a person collecting snail in the paddy field who would straighten after every two minute to regain energy. Also think of the paddy transplanting season where one has to stoop to do the job. I am not saying we have to do away with all the stooping businesses. That’s simply impossible. There are jobs that cannot be done without stooping. I am only saying that there are jobs that can be done very well without stooping. One such instance is the spade handle! As a young boy in the village once upon a time, I had a peer group where we go to each other’s field. There was fun and enjoyment. As I reflect back to those years of fun and happiness, I now feel that those years of straining the back to certain extent has its repercussion till date. Think of our village folks who strain themselves day in and day out.How much of expressions and gestures do they make at the end of the day for the tiresome work? I feel every educated person must contribute something for the betterment of our folks. We should share the good ideas that we gain with the village folks. We should find out ways to ease the existing problems by replacing with affordable technologies. We are still very comfortable with the traditional ways of doing things which are very strenuous. We can eliminate the things that affect our well-being. There are plenty

of ways to do the same job. We can always choose the easier way and save our energy for the long run. Majority of the Nagas fear to do menial jobs for fear of being put down. While on the other hand, there are lots of financial constraints which could be averted to certain degree if the available works are taken up. For example, there are plenty of jobs for people who are skilled as cobblers and barbers. But our people under the umbrella of pride prefer to work in the heat and cold. While the people from the plain sit relax under the roof and do their jobs and earn much more. For them, to find endless works in a foreign land is a real manna! During this summer break, I went to Phek hunting for the cobbler from one end of the town to another because some of them had gone home. It made me to reflect how we are unnecessarily dependent on people who come from a very faraway place when we could do things on our own. How helpless we are in these situations! Our people will still prefer to go down in the valley bearing the heat of the day for daily wage rather than sitting down under the roof and work. Which of the two is inferior? I don’t see any work as inferior and superior. Every work that we do is for the betterment of humanity. For example, an IAS officer who may be gifted with intellectual caliber but if there is

no farmer to produce grain, no cobbler to stitch his/her shoes, no barber to trim his/her hair, what a misery it would be? We must remember, we need one another in this journey of life. Each one is gifted differently! No job done is useless. Everything is necessary and contributes for the betterment of humanity. Nagas always fear of being put down by others. Therefore, even if one has nothing at home, we prefer to pretend. Oh my foolish brethren when will we learn? If one can work comfortably, what is the big deal in doing the same work for the same end? After all what one needs in doing the job is to earn money and get things done! Often times our people work in the hottest part of the day without proper covering, leading to terrible sunburn etc. As a result, most people do not take care of their physical appearances which is very important. One may be an ordinary village farmer but his/her decent presentation mean a lot to the people around. We are blessed with wonderful climate. We can live a much better life by having good health of mind, body and spirit. They are all interrelated. A person may have good health but if the psychological wellbeing is affected, a person may present himself/herself miserable to others and to themselves. This will be a great tragedy! Once upon a time, a par-

supply during the early morning hours. As even if you restore the current back in the daytime the low voltage does not allow the motor-pump to pull out water. Some poor churches that cannot afford generators have a very hard time conducting services. Transformers bursting, power-lines snapping, sparks in light posts are all common sight. Replacement of out-dated equipments and purchase of sub-standard goods should be stopped immediately. Transformers should also be updated and replaced according to the requirement of a locality. The businesses people are also badly affected as most business is run by power and without proper power supply they incur heavy losses but have to just bear the brunt on all these with no solution in sight .Some shops should also be allotted only limited supply as even during daytime they put on several dozens of lights in the daytime when the town is suffering acute shortage of power. It should be made mandatory for shopping malls, big complexes to acquire transformers. It is not only about paying but supervising the use of power judiciously. Street lamps and bulbs are seen switched on till daytime in many places which should be stopped. Doyang, Likimro and other projects should also provide enough supply to our own state even though we supply to others outside state. It is high time our power department should harness our streams and rivers and make our little state self–sufficient in power. The public should also be judicious and wise in using electricity and think about others. Unnecessary electrical equipments and gadgets should not be used. There are some rich people’s mansions and buildings that use more electricity than an entire village or a colony. So it is not only about paying the bills but allotting according to the population wise or house wise too. The most famous excuse of the power department is not being able to generate the required revenue. As technocrats and qualified people with assigned duties, the power department should also find ways to address this problem to make our Nagaland a better and a comfortable place to live instead of always passing the buck. Why should all the regular bill payers continue to suffer? It is a great shame that when so many private kingdoms are built over the state, we cannot still have a proper power supply in this age. he Naga’s determinate fights for their right to self-determination and the India’s cautions to stop another disintegration of the Union after breakaway of Pakistan from the British administered India continues to be one of the major challenges in the Indian political imbroglio since the very beginning of Indian independent. For many years, the political realities happening in North East (NE) region of India, particularly with the Naga’s political issues are been censored from the media arenas and was kept out of debate. Yet, unheard to many Indians, the never ending battles between Indian soldiers and NE insurgents, particularly the Nagas have never died down till to this very day. With the persistence of this unsettled political issue with the Naga’s rights, India also have suffered long enough

of internal security crisis and at the global political platform, were smeared with a weak image to handle much of domestic political turmoil. The determinant fight from the Nagas militant’s camps and the counter tactics from the Indian Government have led to loss of thousands lives from both the side since India was free from colonial rule. The Nagas’ fight for selfdetermination does goes to the global level since 1930s when the Nagas under the legendary leadership of A Z Phizo declared their independent on 14th August 1947, day ahead of India and the same been notified to the Indian Government and the United Nations. The voice of the Nagas however failed to appeal global support as the most horrified World War II was settling to normalcy only then. The Indian on the other

hand intensified the used of coercive armed forces to suppress the Nagas demand for sovereign state. Yet this does not deterred the Nagas and a plebiscite was carried out in the land of the Nagas in 1952. The Nagas voted in unison against the merging with the Indian Union and clearly demonstrate their stand by boycotting the first Indian general election that was held in 1951-52. Unfortunately, the voice of the Nagas was never considered as ‘reasonable and rightful’ by the Nehru and his regime. The Government of India (GoI) and Naga insurgents under the collective leadership of India Issac Chisi Swu and Thuingaleng Muivah entered into ceasefire agreement in August 1997 to give a fresh hope for amicable solution. The 1997 cease-fire agreement gave some relief but the bitter

combats and the dialogues of claimed and counter claims continues without much possible hope. The ongoing negotiation, particularly with the signing agreement on 3rd August 2015 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, must take deeper thought to hammer out the settlement in an honourable ways at the earliest for humanity, democratic principles and Gandhian philosophy that Indian strongly upholds and for the future welfare growth of both Indian and Nagas. To be even more precise and specific, India must settle the Indo-Naga political issue for its own political reasons. (To be concluded) Dr. V. S. ticular caste in Tamil Nadu would play the drum to lead the funeral processions and during the festivals because they are lower than the others. Today, young people of any caste would happily take up the job because they earn a lot. A particular caste once upon a time in Kerala would climb the coconut trees to pluck coconuts. Today, things have changed. The labeled caste for menial jobs has found greener pastures. People of any caste do the job today! The educated class, particularly who travel around needs to get information as much as possible and enlighten our village folks! It is so very important to find out easy ways of doing things. This does not imply laziness. This does not mean we have to disprove everything of what our folks way back home do. What is the problem if we can choose the easier path to get the same job done? After all, it is very important to keep oneself healthy, wealthy and wise. After having read this article, make sure you lengthen your spade handle or at least encourage people for the same and see the result. Choose to preserve your health and that of your folks way back home. My views arehowever subject to criticism and you can beg to differ! Sickness sweeps Chessore with zero medical care Sir,

Ill health and sickness have been raiding over Chessore Town and Village over the past few weeks, with hundreds of them suffering from fever, headache, general weakness, etc. There has been no clear idea of what this unusual situation is all about. Though majority of the victims are children yet elders are not exempted. With almost every family is affected by the problem the absence of proper medical care makes things terrible. The only Govt. PHC in the locality is without sufficient man-power and lack facilities. Reportedly the designated doctor has been on study-leave over two years. The people depend on the limited medicines and care available in the private sources. The miserable road conditions and lack of transportation facilities make the people unable to move out to other places for medical care. The locality has nearly two thousand families and there are many villages adjacent. Should the citizens be left to suffer negligence to this extreme? Isn’t it just and proper that the people receive required facility and care as citizens of the state though the place is remote and far from the main towns. Fr.Francis Yimso Cheerangal

Dalai Lama the world’s problems. The letter, released yesterday, call for the US government to facilitate the involvement of the Dalai Lama or his representatives in the global debate on climate change and its potential consequences given Tibet’s fragile environment, rapid warming and critically important reserves of freshwater. Urging the US government to publicly support the right of the Dalai Lama to return to Tibet, the letter asks Obama to publi-

cally and regularly call for the immediate and unconditional release of all Tibetan political prisoners held by the People’s Republic of China whose cases have been documented by the Congressional-Executive Commission on China. It seeks establishment of a US consular office in Lhasa, Tibet to help the US observe and address the obstacles to freedom of movement that affect both Tibetans within China, and US citizens, including Tibetan-Americans, who seek to travel to Tibetan areas of China. The letter also seeks enforcement of norms of reciprocity to ensure that senior Chinese officials responsible for restricting the access of US officials, journalists, TibetanAmericans and other citizens to Tibetan areas of China are themselves restricted in their travel when they are in the US. Prominent among those who signed the letter are Congressman Eliot Engel, Ranking Member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee Nita Lowey among others.

At least 130 people were killed in the Paris attacks and hundreds wounded, while the Mumbai attacks, carried out by the Pakistan-based Lashkare-Taiba killed more than 160 people. According to various member-states, given that dur-

ing attacks such as that on the Bataclan theatre in Paris the perpetrators’ apparent aim was to cause fatalities as swiftly as possible, it is essential for security forces to take action quickly, the report said. “Such a scenario is not, however, part of the standard response of some law enforcement agencies to hostage situations. Traditionally, security forces seek to buy time to negotiate with perpetrators to secure the release of hostages. “Consequently, memberstates pointed out that those in command and those providing policy approval should be briefed in advance on the limited options available to ensure that response teams are able to engage the terrorists quickly to halt the killing as soon as possible,” it said. The report also said several leaders of the Al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), including some of Indian- origin, are not listed under the UN as designated terrorists.

B’desh lawyer seeks Tk 1cr over elephant’s death

Doctors who autopsied the body of ‘Bangabahadur’, which died after wandering around four Bangladesh districts for more than a month, have found that the Indian wild elephant died of heart failure.

about 200 km from capital Dhaka on Tuesday. It was separated from its herd on June 27 in Assam - where monsoon floods have made life difficult - and got washed away in the streams of mighty Brahmaputra to downstream Bangladesh. On its way from India, it was forced to stay in marshes as the highlands were occupied by flood-hit people who were unwilling to let the frightened animal share their shelters. Forest officials in Bangladesh tranquilised it four times. Witnesses and people in the neighbourhood suspected that excessive tranquillising might have partly led to its death. Akond has served a notice to the government, alleging Bangabahadur might have died due to tranquiliser overdose. On Tuesday, the Forest Department as per the directives of the Ministry of Environment and Forest formed a five-member probe body to investigate the cause of Bangabahadur’s death. Bangabahadur was buried on the day of his death at Koyra - the village where he was captured and died - following an autopsy.

Dhaka, Aug 19 (PTI): A Supreme Court lawyer in Bangladesh has petitioned the High Court here to order the government to recover Tk 1 crore as compensation from those responsible for the death of ‘Bangabahadur’, a wild Indian elephant which was swept away 1,700 km by raging floods in the Brahmaputra river. Eunus Ali Akond plead-

ed the court to order the government to constitute a judicial inquiry to probe the incident. In his petition, Akond said that the government is responsible for protecting and preserving the environment and wildlife under Article 18 (A) of the Constitution. The government failed to discharge its constitutional duties as it could not rescue

Trump regrets not using ‘right words’ sometimes

Lahore, Aug 19 (PTI): Pakistan is investigating another Mumbai attack suspect, who has recently been arrested, for allegedly providing financial assistance to the LeT men to carry out the deadly assault in 2008. “The FIA (Federal Investigation Agency) has arrested Sufyan Zafar recently and is interrogating him for his role in providing financial assistance to the accused of the Mumbai attack - who are lodged in the Adiala Jail Rawalpindi,” FIA special prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar told PTI today. He said Zafar was absconding after being declared proclaimed offender in the Mumbai case. A resident of Gujrawala district of Punjab, some 80km from Lahore, Zafar is among 21 other absconding suspects wanted in this high-profile case.

Washington, Aug 19 (PTI): Controversial Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says he regretted causing personal pain to people sometimes by not choosing the “right words” and uttering the “wrong thing” even as his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton termed his remark a mere “well-written phrase”. “Sometimes, in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don’t choose the right words or you say the wrong thing. I have done that, and I regret it, particularly where it may have caused personal pain. Too much is at stake for us to be consumed with these issues,” Trump said at an election rally in Charlotte, North Carolina. He also said that he is not a politician. “I have worked in business, creating jobs and rebuild-

Dolly Parton defends Ed Sheeran, Led Zeppelin and

olly Parton has spoken in defence of songwriters, after a spate of plagiarism cases against the likes of Led Zeppelin and Ed Sheeran. “I don’t believe that any of the people who get sued intentionally set out to do it,” said the star, whose own hits include Jolene and Here You Come Again. “I always worry about it so much when I write. You don’t set out to try and steal anything, but it can happen.” However, she added, writers who do infringe copyright “should pay up”. Parton was herself at the centre of a copyright case in 1985. Husband and wife team Neil and Jan Goldberg sued her star for $1 million, saying she had copied their song Money World on the hit single 9 To 5. The couple claimed they had given the song to Jane Fonda, who played it to her co-star in the movie of the same name. A jury threw the claim out after just 35 minutes deliberation, deciding unanimously that there was “no similarity” between the two tracks. There has been a noticeable increase in the number of plagiarism cases since 2013, when Pharrell Williams and

Ed Sheeran is currently fighting two copyright cases, over the songs Photograph and Thinking Out Loud; while Led Zeppelin recently won a case accusing them of using an obscure instrumental track as the basis for Stairway To Heaven. Separately, Sam Smith gave Tom Petty a credit on his single Stay With Me, after similarities were pointed out between that song and Petty’s I Won’t Back Down. Speaking to the BBC, Parton agreed with this practice. “You should at least give them the credit if it is that close,” she said. But she stressed that

songwriters can’t help but be influenced by the things around them. “Especially in music, because there’s so much of it. If you write all the time, you’re going to collect those things and not know it. “I’m always horrified of that. If something sounds familiar, I think, ‘Oh my goodness, what is that?’ Then I’ll track it down and, in my case, it’s usually just one of my own songs!” The country legend has just released a new album, Pure & Simple, which is accompanied by a recording of her performance at the Glastonbury Festival in 2014. She said the performance was “one of my greatest memories” and a “highlight of my career”.

iranmala, a sci-fi Bengali TV drama, is wildly popular in Bangladesh An argument about a popular TV drama in Bangladesh erupted into a mass brawl involving hundreds of people, with 15 people badly injured, police say. Villagers in Habiganj district had gathered in a cafe to watch Indian-made Bengali fantasy drama Kiranmala. But when two men disagreed about the plot, others took sides and soon hundreds of people were fighting with sticks and knives. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. Kiranmala, a sci-fi drama about a warrior princess who saves mankind from evil, is wildly popular in Bangladesh. The brawl erupted in the cafe in Dhol village, 176 kilometres (109 miles) north-east of Dhaka. nian girls because it is the first medal, and I hope at the next Olympics we will get a gold,” said Alizadeh, who wears a head covering under her headguard. Alizadeh thanked her parents and coach. “They really stand behind me and I am so happy,” she added. Fade Jones from Britain won the gold medal after she triumphed over Spain’s Eva Calvo Gomez 16-7 in the

same weight category. Alizedeh won the 2014 Youth Olympics, and last year took the bronze medal at the world championships, beating Jones in her matches. Few Iranian women have competed in the Olympics since the 1979 Islamic Revolution and have been hampered by stringent religious norms requiring specific clothing. Women are not permitted to attend all-male athletic

events or enter stadiums where they are taking place, a rule that has drawn international criticism on gender equality grounds. Meanwhile, Jade Jones won Team GB’s 22nd Olympic Games gold in Rio by defending her -57kg taekwondo title. The London 2012 champion beat Spain’s Eva Calvo Gomez 16-7 in the final after cruising through the rounds with a series of commanding displays. Jones beat Morocco’s Naima Bakkal in her first bout and secured a place in the semi-finals with a 7-2 win over Belgium’s Raheleh Asemani. She had a tougher clash with Sweden’s Nikita Glasnovic in the last-four but came out on top 9-4 thanks to a superb head kick, with Calvo Gomez beating Egypt’s Hedaya Wahba on a golden point to secure her place in the final. Jones connected with a pair of head shots in the opening round to lead 6-0 but Calvo Gomez rallied in the second with a head shot of her own, cutting the deficit to 7-6 with two minutes remaining. But she was ragged in the final round, consistently leaving herself open to attack, with Jones taking full advantage on a couple more head shots before victory was confirmed.

West Ham held in Europa qualifying play-off London, Aug 19 (Agencies): West Ham were forced to settle for a draw as a late goal for Astrana Giurgiu earned the hosts a 1-1 draw in their Europa League qualifying play-off first leg. Slaven Bilic’s side took the lead just before the break when Mark Noble coolly slotted home a spot-kick after Cristian Sapunaru handed in the area. It was fully deserved as the Hammers were the better side up until that point and for much of the second half too. Michal Antonio missed a great chance for the visitors to double the lead and they were left to rue the wasted opportunity as just 90 seconds later the home side drew level, Denis AlGokhan Tore also caught the eye during the Europa League ibec holding off the defender’s challenge before firing home tie in Romania.

Isinbayeva pledges to defend athletes’ rights Rio de Janeiro, Aug 19 (IANS): Russia’s Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva has pledged to defend athletes’ rights in her capacity as member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission. “I would like to thank Alexander Zhukov (Russian Olympic Committee President) and his staff who helped me with my campaign. Naturally, I will work for the sake of the Olympic Movement and I will certainly defend athletes’ rights in the first place,” Isinbayeva told journalists after her election to the commission on Thursday. “Today, it is vitally important for athletes’ voices to be heard. I am pleased to act as a kind of bridge between Russia

and the IOC. I am so happy that it makes me utterly mad.” All the athletes who are competing in the Rio Olympic Games took part in the election of four new members of the IOC Athletes’ Commission. Twenty-three candidates ran for the four vacant positions. Isinbayeva gained 1,365 votes. The other three newlyelected members are German fencer Britta Heidemann (1,603), South Korean table tennis player Ryu Seung-min (1,544), and Hungarian swimmer Daniel Gyurta (1,469). The mandate of four-time Olympic swimming champion Alexander Popov who has represented Russia at the IOC Athletes’ Commission is expiring on August 21.

Cincinnati, Aug 19 (Agencies): Andy Murray won his 600th ATP Tour match to progress to the quarter-finals of the rain-hit Cincinnati Open. The British No 1 defeated South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 6-3 6-2 on a day when his fellow seeds made a series of early exits from the tournament. Murray had to overcome his big-serving opponent after his match in the Ohio city was delayed for more than two hours by a huge storm that left the hardcourts needing to be mopped up. Top seed Murray again had trouble with a niggling shoulder injury early in the match, being broken to trail 3-2, but just like his opening match against Juan Monaco, the Olympic champion upped his game once he had warmed up. And a series of breaks of Anderson’s normally-reliable service allowed Murray to extend his winning streak to 20 matches as well as reach the landmark for tour victories. Murray admitted breaking back straight away in the first set was vital to his victory, as he said: “It was big, obviously. “When you’re playing against big servers they tend to be front runners, so for me to get the break back immediately was key and it got the momentum back.” Murray will play Australia’s Bernard Tomic on Friday for a place in the semifinals with most of his leading competitors having exited the tournament including Kei Nishikori, who Murray might have expected to be playing next. Rafa Nadal and Stan Wawrinka, two of the other

Konta crashes out in Cincinnati

Johanna Konta’s wait to break into the top 10 of the WTA rankings goes on after she was knocked out of the Western & Southern Open by Agnieszka Radwanska. The Brit began brightly against her Polish opponent and won a one-sided tie break 7-1 to take an early advantage. She claimed just four more games, however, as Radwanska came back to secure a 6-7 6-4 6-0 victory. Konta needed to reach at least the semi-finals in Cincinnati to have a chance of moving into the top 10 for the first time. Instead, the current 13th-

ranked player fell short of a spot in the quarters as she lost each of the last nine games to drop out. Radwanska said, “She’s a great player. We never played before, but I’ve seen many of her matches, and she’s played great tennis.” “I knew it wouldn’t be easy, and it was an exciting match playing together for the first time. I’m just so happy with the win. It was a very tight match in the beginning. The tie-break slipped away too quickly, that’s for sure. I was able to break at the end of the second set, and I think I started to play better tennis and much more aggressive.” Radwanska meets Simona Halep next after she extended her winning run to 12 matches with a comfortable 6-1 6-2 victory over Daria Gavrilova.

London, Aug 19 (Agencies): Danny Welbeck is set to hand Arsenal a boost by returning four months ahead of schedule from a knee injury. The England striker was expected to face nearly a year out with a problem suffered in the penultimate game of last season against Manchester City. But Arsene Wenger has revealed that Welbeck is healing well and a recent scan confirmed he will be in line to return to action before the turn of the year. “The news was excellent and he will be back around Christmas,” the Frenchman told reporters. “He had a second check — not a procedure, a check with a camera inside. That was the good news of last week, the only good news. That was very positive. “He has an inflammation of his knee and they had to go in again to see if it is healing well or not. If the healing was not good, he would have been out until April.”

Manchester, Aug 19 (IANS): Newly-appointed Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes he is at the “top of his career” at the English Premier League club, insisting he can keep going as head coach for another 15 years. The 53-year-old will take charge of his first competitive game at United’s home ground as the manager on Saturday against Southampton, having won his opening two competitive games against Leicester City in the Community Shield and Bournemouth in the Premier League opener. M o u r i n h o ’s l a s t 1 2 months have been topsy-turvy, going into the last season as Ethe PL champions with Chelsea before getting sacked in December, but the Portuguese said he was upbeat about his new job. “I have been in some of the biggest clubs in the world. This is like the top of my career, but it comes in the early stage of my career. Because as a manager I am really young, and I think I have the best years of my career to come up,” Mourinho was quoted as saying by Sky Sports on Thursday. “I was not joking when I say 15 more years as a manager. 53 plus 15 is 68, so I would say 14, 15, 16 more years, but I don’t see myself going home before 70.” “Even as an opponent I could create a good relationship with the fans, I never had problems, and I have not always behaved the best way. The first time I was running to celebrate a goal at touchline,” the former Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid manager said.

Substitute Marcus Browne - making his debut surged forward and instead of shooting, the teenager chose to play Antonio in but the former Nottingham Forest man blasted wide at the far post. The second leg is at West Ham’s new home, the London Stadium next Thursday and the Romanians will be confident of producing another upset after they eliminated the east London side at the same stage last season. The game very much remains in the balance but although they will feel that a precious victory away from home should have been theirs, they will be marginal favourites as a result of that away goal.

Sindhu settles for historic silver at Rio

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 19 (IANS): Indian shuttler P.V. Sindhu settled for silver at the Rio Olympics after being beaten 21-19, 12-21, 15-21 by World No.1 Carolina Marin of Spain in the badminton women’s singles event here on Friday. It is India’s second medal in the Rio Games after wrestler Sakshi Malik bagged bronze in the women’s 58 kilogram category on Wednesday. In a hard-fought summit clash, which lasted one hour and 20 minutes, fortunes fluctuated dramatically at the Riocentro - Pavilion 4. With the win, two-time World Championship bronze medallist Sindhu now trails Carolina 2-5 in career head to head meetings. Sindhu became the first Indian woman to win silver at any discipline at the Olympics. The Indian shuttler started on a positive note but after 3-3, the Spaniard dominated the proceedings and took four consecutive points to lead 7-3 India’s Pusarla V Sindhu kisses her silver medal after and then 9-5. and displayed swift court movements and hit bodyline smashes to diminish the lead to 13-15. World No.10 Sindhu, who was trailing 16-19 at one point, fought her heart out and took five points on the trot to claim the first game in 27 minutes. Carolina, who can annoy any player with her shuttle retrieving techniques, looked like a spectator as it was Sindhu who reversed the roles to clinch the first game 21-19. In the second game, Carolina, dubbed the “Girl Nadal in Spain” after male tennis star Rafael Nadal, attacked from the start. The Indian couldn’t manage to control the torrent of attacks and trailed 2-11 at the mid-game break. After the break, Sindhu tried to bounce back and displayed a lot of power and strength to dismantle the strategy of the Spanish opponent but failed and relinquished the second game 12-21. In the decider, Carolina got off to a flying start as she took a five-point lead in the initial stage at 6-1. But Sindhu, who was on a giant-killing spree after dismissing two

Bolt takes 2nd gold with 200m win Rio de Janeiro, Aug 19 (IANS): Usain Bolt won the men’s 200 metres title at a third consecutive Olympics with a dominant performance and moved another step closer to his target of clinching three gold medals at the Rio Games here. The Jamaican legend registered a season’s best time of 19.78 seconds at the Olympic Stadium to clinch his second gold medal of the Rio Games here on Thursday.

Bolt had earlier won the men’s 100m title to become the first athlete in the history of the Olympics to win the showpiece event three times in a row. This was also Bolt’s eighth consecutive gold medal at the Olympics. Andre de Grasse of Canada took silver with a time of 20.02 while Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre got the bronze with 20.12. Adam Gemili of Britain and the veteran Churandy Martina of

the Netherlands came within a hair’s breath of a podium finish before settling for the fourth and fifth positions respectively. Bolt, who had won the 200m title at the 2008 and 2012 Games as well, now needs to win the men’s 4x100m relay in order to complete a hat-trick of gold medals in three consecutive Olympic Games. Despite winning the gold, Bolt was not happy with his performance.

Narsingh banned for 4 years; Olympic dream shattered Rio de Janeiro, Aug 19 (PTI): In a stunning reversal of fortunes, Indian wrestler Narsingh Yadav was ousted from the Olympics and slapped with a four-year ban for flunking a dope test after Court of Arbitration for Sports overturned the clean chit given to him by the National Anti-Doping Agency. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) had appealed against the NADA all-clear to Narsingh at CAS, three days ahead of his scheduled opening bout at the Olympics. “...the parties were informed that the application was upheld, that Narsingh Yadav was sanctioned with a fouryear ineligibility period starting today and that any period of provisional suspension or ineligibility effectively served by the athlete before the entry into force of this award shall be credited against the total period of ineligibility to be served,” CAS said in a statement after the hearing, which lasted four hours last night. “Furthermore, all competitive results obtained by Narsingh Yadav from and including 25 June 2016 shall be disqualified, with all resulting consequences (including forfeiture of medals, points and prizes). The CAS Panel did not accept the argument of the athlete that he was the victim of sabotage and noted that there was no evidence that he bore no fault, nor that the anti-doping rule violation was not intentional. Therefore the standard 4-year period of ineligibility was imposed by the Panel,” it added. The verdict marked a painful end to the sordid controversy which began with the wrestler failing a June 25 test. The 27-year-old’s name had appeared in the official Olympic schedule after he underwent the mandatory weighin. He was to take on France’s Zelimkhan Khadjiev in the qualification round but the CAS verdict has dashed all his hopes. The embattled 74kg category grappler has maintained all along that his scandalous dope test was a result of con-

Narsingh Yadav

spiracy by rivals who spiked his food or drinks. “WADA filed an urgent application before the CAS ad hoc Division to challenge the decision of NADA India to exonerate Narsingh Yadav following two positive anti-doping tests with methandienone on 25 June and 5 July 2016. The athlete asserted that he was the victim of sabotage (food/drink tampering) by another person. WADA requested that a 4-year period of ineligibility be imposed on the athlete,” the CAS further noted. Having grabbed the quota by virtue of his World Championships bronze in Las Vegas last year, Narsingh’s road to Rio was fraught with obstacles after he was named to represent India ahead of double Olympicmedallist Sushil Kumar.

Narsingh was defeated by his own: IOA

Dejected by the four-year ban imposed on Narsingh Yadav by CAS, the Indian Olympic Association has said that the embattled wrestler has been “defeated by compatriots” rather than opponents. “It’s not a just loss for Narsingh at the Court of Arbitration for Sports but he was beaten by his compatriots who did not want to let him compete at the Olympics and not by his

MEDIREX LIFE SCIENCES TM (An ISO - 9001 : 2008 Certified Company)

opponents,” IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta told PTI after the CAS verdict. “The picture is clear and neither I nor anyone has to say who’s done the foul play. If you go back, you can easily connect the dots and would clearly know who could be the suspect. “As of now, the culprits have been successful in stopping him from the Olympics, though we may challenge the order and minimise the ban. It’s a loss for the country.” Further hinting at a conspiracy theory, Mehta added, “We must go deep into the matter and the government should initiate a CBI inquiry into the matter. It’s not a small thing, it’s plaguing our country’s sport and we must nip this in the bud. “Days after he won the battle at the Delhi High Court, a phone call came from his SAI centre in Sonipat about some doping activities, the raid happened and his sample was found positive. It cannot be sheer coincidence.” WADA had appealed against the NADA all-clear to Narsingh at CAS, three days ahead of his scheduled opening bout at the Olympics. Mehta was part of the four-hour long marathon hearing here. The verdict marked a painful end to the sordid controversy which began with the wrestler failing a June 25 test.
