Kashmir remains tense

CENTRE APPEALS FOR PEACE; PRESIDENT URGED TO FIND POLITICAL SOLUTION SRINAGAR /NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (AGENCIES): Situation in Kashmir continues to remain tense as curfew was still in force in Srinagar district and two south Kashmir towns, with normal life in the valley paralyzed for the 43rd day on Saturday. “Curfew is in force in entire Srinagar district, Anantnag town and Pampore town as a precautionary measure,” a police official said. The official said restrictions on the movement of the people were in force in rest of the valley. Schools, colleges and private offices remained closed while public transport remained off roads. Centre on Saturday appealed to the people of the Valley to shun the path of confrontation and join the path of progress. In a related development, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah led a delegation of opposition lawmakers to meet President Pranab Mukherjee and urged him to ask the Centre to handle the situation in the Kashmir valley politically and not administratively. Making an appeal to the valley, where over 65 people have died in clashes so far, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said at a rally in Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh: “We not only love the land of Kashmir but also its people. I appeal to you to shun the path

Urjit Patel appointed new RBI Governor

Urjit Patel

NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (PTI): RBI’s Deputy Governor Urjit Patel was today appointed as the next Governor of the central bank after Raghuram Rajan demits office on September 4. 52-year-old Patel has been appointed as new RBI Governor, official sources said today. He was first appointed as Deputy Governor for three years in January 2013 and was given an extension this January. Patel has been known as ‘inflation warrior’ of Rajan, who made a surprise announcement in June that he would return to academia after end of his current threeyear tenure. In recent months, Rajan has come under attack from some quarters, including BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy, for what they call his reluctance to lower interest rates and giving priority to inflation control.

Over loaded transformers in Dimapur reason for load shedding: Power dept t

Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, AUG 20 (NPN): The department of power has informed that the ongoing load shedding in Dimapur district was due to overloading of transformers as the demand for electricity surges to 74 MW during summer against the installed capacity of 68 MW. Speaking to Nagaland Post, executive engineer (EE) Electrical Division Dimapur said there was no dearth of power for distribution to consumers as dams were generating enough electricity during the rainy season. However, almost all of the 932 Public Distribution Transformers (PDT) installed in the district were overloaded due to which the department is compelled to resort to load shedding, EE informed. On the existing infrastructure in the district, EE informed “very few” of the installed transformers were new and spare PDT were not available and added that normal maintenance cycle of the PDT couldn’t be followed due to “system constraints” and paucity of funds. In this regard EE stressed on the need for upgrading the installed PDTs to higher capacity ones and installation of new PDTs. He informed that a 20 MVA (16 MW) transformer was being installed in Sovima and the World Bank has granted fund for installation of another 20 MVA transformer at Padumpukhuri. Once these transformers start working, the existing PDTs will be able to function smoothly, EE stated. Apart from inadequate infrastructure, EE also stated that the department was incurring huge losses due to meter tampering and power theft which accounts to 35% and 8% of technical/commercial loss respectively. He also informed that a specific “connected load” is supplied to consumers while getting new connection, however, addition of electrical appliances alike TV, fridge, AC etc consumes electricity beyond connected load which indirectly overload transformers. In this regard, EE appealed to consumers to use power judiciously.

Konyak Union Myanmar Arrest NSCN (I-M) Wka Companies willing to invest in state’s appeals for restraint town commander: ACAUT mineral development: Dr. Imtiwapang

DIMAPUR, AUG 20 (NPN): Konyak Union Myanmar (KUM) has fervently appealed to both NSCN (K) and Indian army commandos to restrain from carrying out any kind of operation against each other, saying it has caused enough psychological torture to those living around the border areas. In a press note, KUM general secretary K. Akham H Konyak said it wanted to highlight the ground reality of the area as the public were the worst sufferers. KUM alleged that “last year Indian army AR dismantled public road and prohibited public travel across the border area”. Stating that operations had been carried out even in the previous years inside Myanmar, KUM said on August 19, 2016 the army crossed into Myanmar near Throilu village to attack the NSCN outpost. During the operations carried out in the 80s, KUM alleged that the Indian Army bombarded Hoyat village. Granaries and properties of

the villagers were burnt down, while innocent civilians were arrested, tortured and taken away to Tuensang on several occasions, KUM alleged. The villagers were also accused of being involved with NSCN, KUM said. The union however made it clear that the people of Throilu, Hoyat and Nyanching villages had never come across NSCN nor were they involved with any group. KUM said such were the problems faced by the people without any reason from both the Indian and Myanmar army. As gun battle and bombardment were regularly taking place in these three villages, KUM said innocent villagers, in the most neglected region, are made to suffer the most. Meanwhile, KUM expressed appreciation to SP Mon, Yangba Konyak, KU president Mon, Addl. SP, Asst. commandant VG and SDO Chen Town for rushing to the area to take stock of the situation, keeping in view the lives of innocent civilian.

DIMAPUR, AUG 20 (NPN): ACAUT Nagaland has urged the state government to arrest the NSCN (I-M) town commander as per the FIR registered against him and his alleged “extortion activity” at Santsuphen, Wokha before the situation turned worse. In a press release, media cell, ACAUT Nagaland, stated that people would take “whatever means necessary to protect themselves” if the state failed to do so. It stated that the August 12, 2016 incident, wherein a group of irate public of Wokha town ransacked the office of the NSCN (I-M) town command, was “testament to this fact.” ACAUT extended its support to the Wokha people and the joint resolution passed by several frontal organisations, which demanded the arrest of town commander on or before August 23. The joint resolution also urged the Ceasefire Monitoring Group chairman to take serious note of public sentiment and shift out the office of NSCN (I-M) town command from Wokha immediately. ACAUT asserted that the demands of the Wokha frontal organisations should not be taken lightly as they represented the opinion of the general public. ACAUT said it had already filed a FIR against town commander of NSCN (I-M) on June 11, 2016. It said that if the police and the state government had taken serious note of the FIR and arrested the town commander, the August 12 incident would not have occurred. Stating that there was a limit to all harassments meted out to the people by the NPGs, ACAUT said, “unless the government acts swiftly and decisively by addressing the core demands, Wokha was is powder keg waiting to explode.”

Speaking as chief guest at the inaugural session of the 36th State Geological Programming Board (SGPB) meeting held at Directorate of Geology and Mining (DGM) here, Dr. Aier said that generation of a comprehensive database report was a must before exploitation. In this regard, he called upon the department officials to formulate sustainable plans and policies in order to exploit the minerals that would benefit the people of the state. Parliamentary secretary said that mineral base industries constitute the backbone of the

present global economy. Therefore, he said proper management of mineral resources played a vital role in the socio-economic development of a nation. Dr. Aier also reminded the department officials to be mindful of environmental and human concerns in the process of mining and exploration. He maintained that a developed mineral base industry would be the backbone

of the state economy. Parliamentary secretary further encouraged the department officials to concentrate their efforts towards “proving” of already discovered minerals and explore new mineral deposits. The parliamentary secretary called for concerted effort towards developing minor minerals like sand, gravel, boulders etc. (Cont’d on p-5)

North East on track to connect state capitals by train Army denies raids inside Myanmar G U WA H AT I , AU G 2 0 (AGENCIES): From 2020, people travelling to Kohima for the Hornbill Festival need no longer leave the train at Dimapur and catch a taxi to the Nagaland capital. With Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu recently laying the foundation stone for the Rs 2,315 crore, 88-km Dhansiri-Kohima railway track, which was declared a national project in 2007, all seven Northeastern capitals are finally being connected to the national railway map. Kohima is the last of these. Work on connecting three other capitals — Imphal, Aizawl and Shillong — is progressing fast and trains are expected to chug in there in the next three years. It has been a long journey since 1881, when the railways first arrived in the region. The Assam Railway & Trading Company laid the Dibru-Sadiya railway, a 92km line connecting Dibrugarh to Margherita for evacuation of coal and tea for dispatch to Kolkata and beyond by steamers on the Brahmaputra.

Fourteen years later, that line got connected to Assam Bengal Railways through Lumding, Badarpur and Dhaka. “The Northeast is on top of the government’s agenda for providing better connectivity to the region. Once completed, these projects will not only bring about a sea-change in the connectivity scenario of the Northeastern region but also provide a big boost to the region’s economy,” Railways Minister Prabhu said when he toured Agartala, Imphal and Dimapur to kick-start projects to spread the network in NE. Agartala not only got its first direct train to New Delhi but also saw the minister lay the foundation stone for a new 15-km line that will connect Agartala to Akhaura in Bangladesh for an onward link to Kolkata through Dhaka. To Myanmar border: Among the most significant of the ongoing projects is the Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal line, 111 km, which will not only put the Manipur capital on the railway map in the next couple of years but also pre-

pare the grounds for taking the railways to Moreh on the Myanmar border and beyond to become part of the proposed Trans-Asian Railway. The Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal line will have two striking special features. The bridge on the river Iring, with a pier height of 141 metres (almost equal to one Qutub Minar stacked over the other) will be the tallest bridge of the world. And Tunnel No. 12 will be the longest in India at 11.55 km. The railways minister, while announcing commencement of work on Tunnel No 12, said it would be a symbolic representation of the state getting connected to mainland India. “It will also open up new vistas for economic development of the region,” he said. Declared a national project because of its strategic importance, the Jiribam-TupulImphal line has already been partly completed, with freight trains moving on the 12.5-km Jiribam to Dholakhal section since March. On the 84-km Jiribam-Tupul section, 25 of

37 tunnels have been completed, said officials at Northeast Frontier Railway headquarters in Guwahati. Through Bangladesh: What the entire Northeast is most looking forward to is a direct railway link to Kolkata through the heart of Bangladesh, which will reduce the train journey between Agartala and Kolkata by nearly 1,100 km. While the present length of the Agartala-Kolkata link through Lumding, Guwahati and New Jalpaiguri is 1,613 km, once the 15-km stretch between Agartala and Akhaura (in Bangladesh) is complete, the direct travel distance between the Tripura capital and Kolkata will come down to just 514 km. Once completed, the project will also make movement of goods – particularly foodgrains, petroleum products, cement and other materials – faster and smoother to Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and the Barak Valley of Assam too. As of now, transporting foodgrains to these states has been a major

problem especially during the monsoon months, with landslides and floods making movement of both trains and trucks impossible in Assam and Meghalaya. Tripura has been the worst sufferer, having had to get supplies through Bangladesh at least twice in recent years. With railway connectivity now much better than road connectivity, Tripura last week even saw oil tankers being moved by flat-wagon goods trains, an exercise that is generally meant only for movement of goods for the armed forces. “Railways’ capital investment in the Northeastern region has been consistently increased and next year approximately Rs 7,000 crore will be allocated for developmental projects in the region,” the railways minister said. He said these initiatives would in the long run not just trigger all-round development but also contribute towards raising the region’s per capita income to the highest in the country.

NEW DELHI/IMPHAL, AUG 20 (AGENCIES): The Assam Rifles and the Army on Saturday rejected claims by insurgent group National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) of an Indian military operation in Myanmar targeted against its militants, in which security personnel purportedly suffered casualties, The Hindu reports stated. On Friday, reports quoting NSCN (K), said a gunfight had taken place between troops and NSCN (K) militants, and five to six commandos were killed. The reports came on the eve of Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj’s visit to Myanmar on August 22, even as Assam Rifles and other security agencies stepped up vigil along the India-Myanmar border and across the northeast against the NSCN (K). In a statement issued on Saturday, the Assam Rifles said, “The alleged offensive on NSCN (K) Camp between Chenmoho village in Mon distt. and Thorloi village in Myanmar on 19 Aug 2016 was not launched by Para Commandos or any other troops of the Indian Army. Firing across the border in Chenmoho village of Mon distt. was heard by the troops deployed in the region. The troops moved closer to border areas but could not ascertain any concrete details about the gun battle across the border.” The troops moved closer to border areas but could not ascertain any concrete details about the gun battle across the border.” The statement went on to claim that the “Fire fight is most likely an inter-factional conflict which was claimed against the Indian Army commandos as a propaganda to gain popularity and make headlines by the NSCN(K).” A senior army officer in Delhi however, said there was an encounter between Assam Rifles personnel and a group of NSCN (K) militants, when the latter was trying to infiltrate into Indian side. “We have recovered three automatic weapons, one pistol and a 12 bore,” he said. The officer said the militants abandoned their weapons and retreated to Myanmar, and thus Indian security personnel do not know of any casualty on the other side. “We have not suffered any casualties,” he said. B’desh okays Akhaura-Agartala rail link N E W D E L H I , Au g 2 0 (Agencies): In a move that will bring the north eastern state of Tripura closer to the mainland, the Bangladesh government has given approval for the rail link between Akhaura in its territory and the state capital of Agartala. The 1700 km distance between Agartala and Kolkata which goes through the ‘chicken’s neck’ in Siliguri would be reduced to 550 km once this rail link comes into existence by next year. The approval of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), chaired by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a big boost to the project that has been facing hurdles

in terms of land acquisition. According to Bangladesh officials, “The approval came for the project that falls on our side. Out of the proposed 15.054 km, nearly 10 kilometres dual gauge line will be laid down on Bangladesh territory.” The railway track will be extended to the southern-most town of Tripura - Sabroom that is only 75 km from the Chittagong port. The project is expected to cost Rs 1,000 crore and MEA will provide requisite funds to the Bangladesh government. “So far the cost of doing business in the north-east is much higher due to the lack of connectivity. Reduced distant to Kolkata and accessibility to

an international port will woo lot of investors,” MEA sources said. The project ran into land acquisition problems on the Indian side, the sources added. “The Tripura government is soon going to start sending out notices for acquiring land. Plans are afoot as well to build a flyover in the region to save some arable land,” the sources said. There were some reservations among local politicians about the modalities of travel. “Many state leaders were concerned about if the residents of Agartala will have to take visa before travel through Bangladesh, or are they supposed to carry passports. These details are also being fleshed out,” said Manipur Governor appointed Najma Heptullah arriving at Imphal Airport on Saturday. the sources. She will take oath on Sunday.

Sonowal questions cement cos on price hike

G u wahati , Au g 2 0 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today questioned 25 cement companies about the reasons for a reported price hike and asked them to cut the rates immediately. “The rise in price of cement has an impact on the common man. The state government is committed to bringing in much desired stability in the price of all commodities,” Sonowal said in a meeting with cement manufacturers here. Cement companies re-

portedly hiked the prices by Rs 40-50 per bag. According to an official statement, he said the rise in prices of cement has affected the market and asked the companies to take steps to put a tab on price rise. “If the price of cement is inordinately high in Assam in comparison to other states, there has to have a repercussion in our state. In a such a situation, the government cannot play the role of a mute spectator but will act to impress upon the companies to stabilise their price,” Sonowal said.

Pre-historic Garo artefacts unearthed

Shillong, Aug 20 (PTI): Ancient artefacts that could help in identifying the spatial distribution of the indigenous Garo tribals and their culture have been unearthed recently. Labourers engaged in a road project at Rongkhon Songgital village in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district stumbled upon those pre-historic artefacts which included earthenware, materials made of iron and smoking pipes. It has been reported to the Archeology department of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and a team led by Prof Tilok Thakuria has examined the artefacts.

“The discovery is significant for the study of ancestral sites in the region. Preliminary observation suggests that the indigenous Songsarek Garo tribals used earthenware,” Thakuria said. “Iron artefacts like ‘dao’ and other blades indicates that they had knowledge about metallurgy. We even found a metal bangle from the site,” he said. Smoking pipes made of clay, a century-old glass bottle and articles made of iron have also been found. “Unearthing of such ancestral sites will help us get information on the spatial

distribution of the indigenous Garos within and outside of Garo Hills,” Thakuria said. The NEHU team is now preparing for more excavation. “It is exciting as these discoveries will help us link our history and culture and the evolution from thereof especially in view of a lack of written history among the Garos,” Serimchi, one of the team members and a student said. Like the Khasis, the Jaintias or other tribes of the state, the Garos do not have a written history until the British set foot here in the early 18th century.

NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (PTI): Outspoken BJP leader Subramanian Swamy today came out in support of V K Singh, amid the ongoing row over the Army chief ’s affidavit against him, saying the Minister was continuously being targeted by “certain corrupt forces” and there was a “paid slander campaign” against him. Swamy said that the government should take steps to protect Singh since as a Minister he cannot defend himself in a “slugfest with the present Chief of Army Staff ” Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag. There should be peace at first then issues can be resolved through talks. “Some people are trying to create hatred among Hindus, Muslims, Christians and Parsis by following the divide and rule trick adopted by British rulers but they have been failed miserably. SURAT (GUJ), AUG 20 (PTI): The monogrammed suit donned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his meeting with US President Barack Obama in New Delhi last year, which had kicked up a controversy, entered the Guinness World Records as “the most expensive suit sold at auction”. The suit had gone under the hammer in February last year and was purchased for Rs 4.31 crore by Surat-based diamond trader Lalji Patel, who owns Dharmananda Diamond Company. “It is a matter of happiness and pride that the suit has found a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. We had applied for the world record around five months back on the suggestion of our company’s HR management team. Within a couple of months, we received a certificate acknowledging that it was the world’s most expensive suit sold at an auction,” Hitesh Patel, son of Laljibhai, said here today. The suit, which has stripes with the name ‘Narendra Damodardas Modi’ woven into it in glittering gold letters, has been placed inside a glass cabin at the reception of the Dharmananda Diamond Company for visitors to view it, Patel said. The suit was reportedly prepared at a cost of Rs 10

lakh and was auctioned at a base price of Rs 11 lakh. The Guinness World Records acknowledges the suit as the “most expensive suit (clothing) sold at auction is Rs 43,131,311 and was bought by Laljibhai Tulsibhai Patel (India) in Surat, Gujarat, India on February 20, 2015.” The money raised from the auction of the suit has been earmarked for the Centre’s clean Ganga mission. After successfully bidding for the suit, owner Laljibhai Patel had told the media that he wanted to do something for the country and this auction gave him a chance.

“I always wanted to do something in the interest of country. This event gave me a chance to do something in national interest, in this case for Clean Ganga Mission. I never thought that this incredible suit will finally come to me,” he had then said. The suit, which Modi had worn during Obama’s three-day state visit to India in January last year, had kicked up a political row with opposition parties accusing the PM of ‘narcissism’. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had latched on it to accuse Modi of heading a “suit-boot ki sarkar” which worked only for the rich.

accused Singh of victimising him when he was the Army chief. In 2012, Suhag was placed under a discipline and vigilance (DV) ban by Singh, for his alleged “failure of command and control” after a Court of Inquiry was ordered into an operation carried out in Jorhat, Assam, on the night of December 20-21, 2011 by the 3 Corps Intelligence and Surveillance Unit. Suhag, who was the then General Officer Commanding of the unit, said the imposition of DV ban on him and issuance of a show cause notice by the then COAS “was illegal and premeditated”.

T H I R U V A N A N THAPURAM, AUG 20 (PTI): The stray dog menace in Kerala continues unabated with a 65year-old woman being mauled to death by a large pack on a suburban beach at nearby Kanjiramkulam in the state capital. The hapless woman, Siluvamma, a resident of the coastal belt, was attacked by a large number of stray dogs at Pulluvila beach, according to her family. She suffered dog bites all over her body and succumbed to injuries while on her way to hospital. The dogs also attacked the local people who tried to rescue the woman by chasing

them away. Siluvamma’s son Selvan, who was also attacked by the dogs while trying to rescue his mother, escaped by jumping into the sea. “My mother went to the beach in the night. As she did not return, I went out searching for her. What I saw was shocking. She was being attacked by over 100 stray dogs. She was bleeding all over the body,” Selvan told reporters later. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, another native of Pulluvila, Daisy, was also attacked and severely injured by stray dogs last night. The 52-year-old woman said she was attacked by a pack of dogs when she went out of

the house at around 11.30 PM. She was rushed to the government medical college here and given a shot of anti-rabies vaccination Medical college hospital sources said though she had injuries on her hands and legs, her condition was stable. She was shifted to Pulluvila primary healthcare centre for further treatment in the morning, they added. Stray dogs have been posing a great threat to people, especially women, children and the elderly in coastal stretches in Kerala, including Pulluvila, for some time. The issue has been a point of debate in Kerala for the last few years after increase in inci-

dents of stray dog attacks and was also raised in the Assembly earlier this year. According to a report submitted in the Supreme Court recently in a connected case, more than one lakh people in Kerala have been bitten by dogs in 2015-16. The report was submitted by a committee appointed by the apex court to look into the aspect of treatment of people bitten by stray dogs and claims of compensation in the state. The report also said Kerala is estimated to have stray dog population of 2.5 lakh, which feed lavishly on the waste and garbage dumps across cities and towns.

KOLKATA, AUG 20 (PTI): Launching a frontal attack on the Narendra Modi government, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today accused it of bulldozing the federal structure in the country and said she would seek the President’s opinion on the issue. “Modi government is bulldozing the federal structure and violating Constitution. It is interfering in the functioning of the state governments. We will seek the opinion of the President,” Banerjee told reporters at the ‘Nabanna’, the state secretariat. The state government, she said, received a letter from the Centre during the day saying that centrallysponsored schemes are being rationalised. “This is being done by force without taking the states into confidence ... They talk about cooperative federalism. I don’t know what is cooperative federalism. “If they interfere into the functioning of the states, there is no meaning of the existence of the state governments. It is a very serious matter,” she said. “Narendra Modi is running dictatorship. The people of the country have lost freedom under Modi. “They (BJP) are trying to start a Presidential form of government knowing that they will not win next time,” the Chief Minister claimed.

Rajnath hits out at Pak for unrest in Kashmir SHAHJAHANPUR (UP), AUG 20 (PTI): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today lashed out at Pakistan for the ongoing unrest in Kashmir, saying it was continuously trying to derail peace in the Valley. “Today, I don’t feel hesitant in saying that Pakistan is continuously trying to create unrest in Kashmir. It wants to destroy it and derail peace in the Valley,” he said here while addressing a Tiranga rally. “Recently, I went to Pakistan and you all know our neighbouring country’s misdeeds. I don’t want to repeat what happened over there but would like to say that I did not let India’s pride go down there. I said one country’s terrorist cannot be the hero of another,” he said. “I want to tell the people of Kashmir that we not only love the land of Kashmir

of thousands of people. My father Rajiv Gandhi did the same in politics. He carried millions of people together, bringing India closer and allowing it to imagine a collective dream,” the Congress leader said. He said India has achieved what it has precisely because millions of people have chosen to live in harmony together. “India in harmony with itself is musical,” Gandhi said. “Unfortunately, there

are also those that prefer a divided and divisive India, out of tune with itself and the world. They seek to spread disharmony. These are the forces that wish to break the bonds between us. There are, unfortunately in India today, men and women who actively promote disharmony, who humiliate and separate, who isolate and kill,” the Congress Vice-President added. He said these people may feel they were thriving in India today but the Congress was “proud to honour you (Shubha) and the many millions like you, who stand for everyone.” “We honour musicians like yourself Shubha ji, like my father and like millions of Indians, who have rid their hearts of fear and hatred. People who are able to see that as Indians we are all one. We will honour them here today and we will continue to honour them every single day,” he said. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also spoke on the occasion. The Sadbhavna Award is traditionally given by Congress President Sonia Gandhi but she was not present as she is recuperating after undergoing a medical procedure at a hospital here. Rahul Gandhi earlier in the day paid tributes to his father in a tweet.

Duped for jobs

rafficking of children and women is a global problem that needs to be confronted and in this regard, despite regular reports appearing in the media, there seem to be little that has been achieved in checking this inhuman trade. In India trafficking in girls from the north east has also been widely reported many times in the media but somehow, not much has been done. According to some reports, most of the girls or women were either duped with promises of glamorous jobs and eventually left to fend for themselves and end up in the flesh trade. Their gullibility has ensured that mostly girls and women who get duped, are sexually abused, dumped and even sold to brothels. The issue or problem of trafficking also involves certain NGOs even including bogus church workers who peddle children to make money. The helpless children are often deprived of basic needs contrary to the promises of free education etc and even sexually abused. There are growing number of girls from the north east working as salesgirls, receptionists, call centres and of late, virtually dominating the beauty salons and Spas (another pseudonym for massage parlours) in cities throughout the country. This is because the girls from north east are friendly, attractive, hospitable and supposedly speak better English. Some would tend to think it as a positive trend but others are skeptical since these girls are unprepared for the kind of manipulation and deprivation. Other cities in north India including Mumbai are some of the places where girls from the north east end up. Traffickers operate through some bogus firms to put up advertisements in the newspapers and after gaining information, contact the intended victims themselves while the bogus firm ends up with no recruitment. In Delhi, it was reported that many girls from the north east were brought to Delhi on being promised jobs by women from their own community .However, once in Delhi, they fall under the grip of vice rings and end up staying in farmhouses in Delhi where they are made to serve alcohol to customers and entertain them too. Obviously, to serve alcohol and entertain male clients is not the only objective as many have complained of being sexually molested and raped. The allurement of big cities for credulous girls is as legendary as the fact that most are forced into prostitution. Shocking as it may sound, some parents for whatever reasons, do not even seem to care much about the consequences when their daughters are lured by some ‘wealthy’ looking of sounding man irrespective of age or creed. There have been instances where minor girls were rescued by law enforcement while on their way to South East Asian countries. Most of the girls were headed for Malaysia to be employed in bars and confessed, they were promised jobs abroad by the agents. On the other hand, there is also a need to create a high level of awareness among the children and youth, especially girls on the modus operandi of such traffickers in educational institutes and at the social levels. There are several stories but in the end, it is for those at home to reflect and take remedial measures to save innocent lives.

DailyDevotion Christ-Awareness …and I will give you rest. —Matthew 11:28 Whenever anything begins to disintegrate your life with Jesus Christ, turn to Him at once, asking Him to re-establish your rest. Never allow anything to remain in your life that is causing the unrest. Think of every detail of your life that is causing the disintegration as something to fight against, not as something you should allow to remain. Ask the Lord to put awareness of Himself in you, and your self-awareness will disappear. Then He will be your all in all. Beware of allowing your self-awareness to continue, because slowly but surely it will awaken self-pity, and self-pity is satanic. Don’t allow yourself to say, “Well, they have just misunderstood me, and this is something over which they should be apologizing to me; I’m sure I must have this cleared up with them already.” Learn to leave others alone regarding this. Simply ask the Lord to give you Christ-awareness, and He will steady you until your completeness in Him is absolute. A complete life is the life of a child. When I am fully conscious of my awareness of Christ, there is something wrong. It is the sick person who really knows what health is. A child of God is not aware of the will of God because he is the will of God. When we have deviated even slightly from the will of God, we begin to ask, “Lord, what is your will?” A child of God never prays to be made aware of the fact that God answers prayer, because he is so restfully certain that God always answers prayer. If we try to overcome our self-awareness through any of our own commonsense methods, we will only serve to strengthen our self-awareness tremendously. Jesus says, “Come to Me…and I will give you rest,” that is, Christawareness will take the place of self-awareness. Wherever Jesus comes He establishes rest— the rest of the completion of activity in our lives that is never aware of itself.

The NSAP has been introduced targeting the destitute, defined as any person who has little or no regular means of subsistence in their own sources of income or no support from the family members with the objective of providing a basic level of financial support. Under NSAP sponsored by the Ministry of Rural Development, the Social Welfare Department is presently undertaking following schemes which included Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS), Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme (IGNWPS), Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme (IGNDPS), National Family Benefits Scheme and Annapurna Scheme – Implemented by Food and Civil Supply Department. Eligible of NSAP Scheme: • Indigenous inhabitance of Nagaland of 60 years and above for OAPS. • No beneficiaries shall be eligible for more than one pension. • On no circumstances a Government pensioner shall be eligible for pension under the rules. • Grant of pension to both hus-

band and wife simultaneously shall be considered only in the most deserving cases under the relevant schemes. • It is classified that only BPL person from the eligible categories would be considered under NSAP except a Widow suffering from AIDS and does not hold Government jobs. • Professional beggars shall not be eligible for pension. The Department of Social Welfare, Nagaland has been undertaking an important role – share in delivering the National Social Assistance Programme to a large scale at present by assessing the eligible vulnerable groups below poverty line under Kohima district. However, as the District is vast in areas, still a lot of efforts need to be emphasized for procuring funds from the Ministry of Rural Development to intensively go forward by providing avenues to the uncovered section of the scheme. The Department has targeted at least 1053 uncovered eligible Senior Citizen for 60-79 years category, 188 for 80 years and above in OAPS, 253 beneficiaries for Widow and 137 beneficiaries in the category of IGNDPS with proper documents to be fitted under NSAP during the current year, for which the process has been initiating for providing allocation of funds. The Department is of the opinion that as the initiating process has completed and submitted the requisite requirements, the Department is of high hope expecting the positive result with sanction order as sought with sanguine. The print-outs

set a date to do it. And the day came. I put the print-outs in my bag, said my last minute prayer, rushed downstairs, got out of the main door of my house and was walking down the neighbourhood lane towards the tube station at Stratford. I had to catch the tube to go to the St. Pancras station. I reached Stratford and got into the tube and sat down. “I just have to be there and give it out, isn’t it?”(my thoughts ran in my mind as I was on my way). And there I was, at my destination. After the tube stopped at the platform, I got off the tube and walked up the escalator heading towards the exit. But I was still inside the St. Pancras station. People were rushing in and out of the exit. It was a busy time of the day. Men and women, children, tourists, professionals, sportsmen and different types of people were rushing inside the station. I had to look for a spot inside, to stand and give it out. I walked around and found a corner, a safe one. Then I opened my bag and took out the printouts. I held them together in one hand and had to give it out by the other. Nobody even noticed that I was standing there. I had to speak to at least someone and give them a print-out. But no. There were no such ‘someone’. Still, I couldn’t give up just yet. I came for this. The print-outs in my hand. Not much time later, a certain someone noticed me. A stern-looking man. A shortfellow. I was making gestures

that he could have a print-out when he started threatening me and warning me. He threatened me that he would report me to the station master. And he was warning me that it wouldn’t be good if I give out such printouts. He kept barking at me as he walked away and then, he disappeared. I was beginning to feel uneasy, a little afraid and low. I thought to myself ‘just leave the station’. I left. I took the exit and came out of the station and began to wonder what I should do. The print-outs in my hand. I started walking straight ahead, crossing the road and reached the other side of the busy street. There was a taxi stand. About 9 or 10 taxis with their drivers waiting for passengers. I saw it. That was it. I went to the end of the taxi line. And beginning from that end I gave each one of the taxi driver a print-out. As I gave them the print-out, they were reading it. And that fulfilled my purpose of the day. I had no more print-outs. I went back to the station, the same way I came, and returned home. The print-outs had my testimony of how much Jesus had done for me. I wrote about how my life changed when Jesus touched me. And that I could not keep quite but must tell everyone about what Jesus did in my life. Thank you Jesus. Praise the Lord! Sorry Dems, Hillary is no better than Trump

oor Donald Trump. He has had to apologies for hurt feelings. He has had to reshuffle his campaign team. He has been kicked so often by the press that he is starting to hide behind chairs, like a university president. Here at the Diary, we favour lost causes, diehards, and underdogs. ‘The Donald’ may soon qualify on all three counts. Empty-Nesters We will return to the Big Top in a moment...and elaborate on why this year’s presidential election is really a ‘Clash of Myths’. Meanwhile, nothing much to report from the markets. Nothing much to report from Ouzilly, either. The last of the family leaves this weekend. Then we will be empty-nesters again. Like parents everywhere, we wonder how much to interfere in the lives of our young adult children. Say something? Or keep quiet? Offer fatherly advice? Or let them figure it out for themselves? Father tends to be more laissez faire. Mother is more activist, more interventionist. Both want to help. But both are aware that they can’t protect their children from life. ‘Wisdom is the knowledge you need to avoid serious mistakes,’ says father, gravely. ‘Where do you get wisdom?’ asks the son. ‘From making mistakes,’ comes the answer. Freaks Aplenty But back to national politics...

As we mentioned two days ago, if you want to enjoy the next three months, we suggest you think of the election campaign as entertainment. It is a circus - with clowns, pratfalls, high-wire acts, and freaks aplenty. ‘But wait,’ you may protest. ‘This is a serious matter. We have to be good citizens and decide the future of the country...responsibly.’ Yes...well...it may be flattering to think so. But nobody really cares what we think... and it doesn’t really matter anyway. The biggest myth of all is that elections turn politics into a kind of market, where voters cast their ballots like people bidding at an auction; we don’t always get the best deal, but it’s the only ‘fair way’. Markets discover prices honestly. People bid with their own money, when they spot a need or an opportunity. And they take the consequences when they make a mistake and adjust their bids - always learning...always correcting themselves...and always moving forward. The worst of them lose everything and are knocked out of the bidding altogether; the best stay at it until they, too, go broke...or retire. Elections are bogus. Most voters don’t have any idea what they are bidding on. Half of them have no money to bid with. Most are merely trying to get something for nothing. Others just want to force others to do as they tell them.

When voters make a mistake, everyone suffers...even those who ‘bought’ the other candidate. No one learns anything. And the most benighted of the candidates is elected president. Besides, what voters think they are bidding on - wealth and power - aren’t on offer; the insiders control the important things. Yankee Putin? But let us turn to the here and now. Hillary on one side; Donald on the other. The myth of the ‘competent professional’ meets the myth of the ‘strong leader’. A Red, White, and Blue Angela Merkel versus a Yankee Putin. What challenges will the new president encounter? Will a decisive, instinctive yahoo respond better than a careful, seasoned hack? No one knows. Nor does anyone know how well the candidates fit the myth. Is Hillary really a competent professional? Is Donald really a strong leader? Or are they just caricatures...frauds pretending to be myths? The most vivid illustration of clashing myths we have seen in recent times was the marvelous performance orchestrated at the Democratic National Convention. One of the most enduring myths - in almost all countries - is that of the ‘fallen hero’. It doesn’t matter who he was... or what he was supposed to be fighting for...or which side he was fighting on: If he died in

war, he is a ‘fallen hero’. The ancient Greeks believed there was no better way to die than in battle. Dying in battle gave a kind of honor and immortality that you couldn’t get otherwise. The Spartans, for example, made headstones only for men who died in battle or women who died in childbirth. And in every village of France you will find a monument to ‘Nos Heros Morts Pour La Patrie’. Usually, it is inscribed with dozens...or hundreds...of names of the soldiers who died in the trenches of World War I. And everywhere, it is common practice to summon the ghosts of fallen heroes in politics. Pericles did it in his famous funeral oration. And so did Team Hillary when it brought out the parents of a Muslim-American soldier killed in Iraq... Myth vs. Myth Donald Trump took the bait. He raised another stillinchoate opposing myth: that there is something un-American or untrustworthy about Muslims. Hillary bet correctly that the ‘fallen hero’ myth was stronger than the ‘bad Muslims’ myth. If you believe the polls, Donald sank; Hillary rose. But wait...what about the candidates’ policies? What about the Wall? What about better trade deals? What about the cost of a college education? What about Russia and the Middle East? Surely, voters have a clear choice?

Why Indo-Naga political issue must be settled at the earliest

(From previous issue) Issues of Internal Security Concern North East India has been better known to most part of India as a hub of different insurgent factions with various separatist demands from the Indian Union. Not a single seven NE states in fact is free from this problem. Some of the faction though seeming to be dying down or surrendered, for instance the Mizoram insurgents with conscientious negotiation, still the proliferation of other groups in neighbouring states are frequently re-emerging. Among the multiple insurgents group functioning in NE, Nagas insurgent is the mother of all; the mother of all in the sense that the Naga’s issue have reached at the wide global support. Those insurgent factions that emerged in the late 1970s and early 80s in the NE have also been guided on the line of Nagas claimed against the integration under Indian Union. The Naga’s open revolt against the Indian Union was one of the first experiences that India faced after its independence. The fight which have prolonged to the present day was witnessed at the cost of many innocent lives from both the Indian security person-

nel as well as Naga militants including many civilians being sacrificed. A government servant (be it a civil servant or military personnel) posted to NE regions is accepted with great apprehensive threat to their lives. The reason for this sense of insecurity is obvious; the government is helpless under the cover of insurgent’s domain. The GoI have taken various measures to content the Nagas aspiration through state reorganisation, signing accords, separate administrative arrangement at the local level and offering economic packets apart from coercive measures. However, the efforts that Central Government has done so far is seen to have only divided the Naga from been living as one. With the divisions of the Naga people to different states with different opportunities and offers from the GoI, the situations in the region are, instead of settling down, have multiplied with one tribe against the others. Factions have proliferated within the Nagas. On the other hand, with the parallel government system functioning at the Naga inhabited regions has compelled the state government to get involved with one faction or the other in open secret. The systems have resulted to inefficiency of the

state government to carry on with the given legitimacy. The states of NE are failed states when it came to internal security concern with little security assurance from the state government. Global Political Position The emerging India in the global political scenario is in much significance than ever before. One of the largest practiced democratic nation in the world, yet India to take the global stage in the political field, it has to come from the east and not the west route. However, taking a march from the east and far-east, India need to stabilise economic and social relation among those nations before any political confidence could be built. To achieve the dreams, Look East policy or Act East has been projected. But to actualise this in reality, India is confronted with more problems from within than from outside. These internal issues, first need to be addressed and contented if India is to take a walk the east ward. (To be concluded) Dr. V. S. Sholounii Pou, Teaches Political Science at Regional Institute of Edication (RIE), Mysuru, (sholouvs@yahoo.in)

Alas, no. As segregationist politician George Wallace once put it, in the things that matter ‘there’s hardly a dime’s worth of difference’ between Democrats and Republicans. For instance, there will be no wall built, regardless of who is elected. ‘For the first time since the Great Depression,’ reports the Washington Post, ‘more Mexicans are leaving the US than entering.’ What would be the point of the wall? To keep Mexicans from returning home? Nor is there any such thing as a ‘better deal’ in foreign trade. There is either free trade...or there are crony trade deals. Both candidates will angle for more crony deals. Both candidates promise huge infrastructure spending programs, too. Will one be better at selecting these boondoggles than the other? No one knows. Tax reform? Neither candidate will make substantial changes. The tax system is tightly controlled by special interests working for the parasitocrats. That won’t change, no matter who sits in the Oval Office. Siberian Candidate But let us turn to foreign policy. Here is where the myths really collide. We know what Hillary will do - she’ll continue to bomb, drone, spend, and meddle. She’ll continue the failed policies of the Bush/ Obama regimes. Donald promises a new

assessment. NATO? Israel? Russia? He’s not so sure. This has so rattled the Republican neo-con warmongers that many - such as Kagan, Kirchick, Negroponte - have gone over to Hillary. They’ve gotten together with the Democrat’s mythmakers - including Krugman in the New York Times - to suggest that Donald is a ‘Siberian candidate’. Here, they’re taking mythmaking to a whole new level: a myth counterattack. Former CIA Director Michael Morell, writing in the New York Times, accused Trump of being ‘an unwitting agent of the Russian Federation’. (Hmmm...we can imagine a ‘witless agent’. But an agent who takes orders wittingly? That is, he takes orders without realising it? That is a challenge!) Donald is said to be tight with Putin; his daughter even vacations with Putin’s mistress, according to the press reports. (Mr Trump and Mr Putin have never met, despite the widely reported ‘bromance’.) Does this mean anything? Team Hillary is betting that the ‘Bad Russians’ myth is stronger than the ‘Good Strong Man’ myth. Next up: a guy who can put four billiard balls in his mouth at the same time! Sir,

Village football ground for sale!

Land in Dimapur is indeed becoming quite a commodity. People use different methods and tactics to acquire land. Some buy honestly, some use threat, coercion or through loan sharking. The last straw is when lump sum membership shares are collected to force occupy village football grounds. Will your Christian conscience or self ethic allow you to buy a village playground? Well, some are already buying our ground at Model Village, 5th Mile, Dimapur, where many of us grew up and our children are now playing in it. Kudos Nagas ! N e w D e l h i , Au g 2 0 (Agencies): As many as 94,000 jobs could be lost in India by 2021 due to the increasing adoption of Internet of Things (IoT), says a report by consulting firm Zinnov. Internet of Things basically means embedding everyday objects with sensors and chips to monitor and control them remotely using internet. Therefore, it reduces the requirement of manpower to operate devices manually. It impacts people in jobs such as office administration, supervisory roles, installation and maintenance and support staff etc. Companies across sectors such as auto, telecom and healthcare are increasingly adopting IoT to increase efficiency and reduce cost. Indian corporates currently spend $1.6 billion on IoT technology, which is expected to go up to $3.8 billion by 2021, says the report. Globally, the spend on Internet of Things currently by corporates is estimated at $120 billion and is expected to grow to $253 billion by 2021, says the report. However, IoT will help in creation of new jobs such as data scientists, product managers, robot coordinators, industrial programmers, solution architect and network engineers, says the report.

a lag in implementation across the SBI Group. It also expects reduction in overheads, administrative offices, and centralisation of treasury will lead to major reduction in operating costs. Post mergers, the bank will re-deploy manpower in customer facing roles with a sharper marketing focus. The same is expected to create a superior customer experience. On the additional capital requirement (which the chairperson had earlier pegged at around Rs 3,000 crore) arising due to the mergers will be met through the resultant increase in efficiencies and economies of scale. During the June quarter earnings, chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya had said that the merger will lead to shuttering of the treasury desks of the merged entities but had ruled out massive closure of retail branches, though she said there would be rationalisation of branches specially in cities. The SBI had first merged State Bank of Saurashtra with itself in 2008. Two years later, State Bank of Indore was merged. SBI was founded on June 2, 1806, as Bank of Calcutta and on 27 January 1921, it was renamed as the Imperial Bank of India. On July 1, 1955, it was formally named as State Bank of India after nationalisation.

In the case of Bharatiya Mahila Bank, 4,42,31,510 shares of SBI will be swapped for every 100 crore of the BMB share having a face value of Rs 10. The other two unlisted subsidiaries are fully owned by SBI. Abizer Diwanji, partner and national leader for financial services at EY which advised the share swap deal for SBI, said, “the ratio will be acceptable to all shareholders.” Last month, the Cabinet had cleared the merger plan. SBI has close to 16,500 branches, including 191 foreign offices spread across 36 countries, while the five subsidiaries have around 6,800 branches. The mergers will allow the SBI to leverage its operational synergies, reach out to new clients and improve market share by ensuring a better reach through enlarged presence, the bank said in a statement. Increased presence in all terrains and geographies will increase bank’s deposit raising capacity and bring down the cost of funds further. Thus, the benefit so derived will flow on to the customers in the form of improved services, borrowing costs etc, it added. The bank also expects the merger to fasten the roll out of digital initiatives, which is currently hamstrung by existence of different entities with separate managements causing

Mumbai, Aug 20 (PTI): State Bank of India today said the ongoing merger of five of its associate banks and Bharatiya Mahila Bank will add Rs 8 trillion or USD 120 billion to its assets and will create a banking behemoth with global scale. The bank also said the merger of State Banks of Bikaner & Jaipur (SBBJ), Travancore (SBT), Patiala (SBP), Hyderabad (SBH) and Mysore (SBM), and also of Bhartiya Mahila Bank, a bank for women set up in November 2013, will lead to a 36 per cent increase in the SBI’s total assets at Rs 30 trillion or about USD 447 billion. The mergers will dwarf ICICI Bank assets to just onefourth of SBI and will also catapult the bank into the top 50 banks globally, the bank said. The combined entity will have network of over 24,000 branches with 2,70,000 employees and 58,000 ATMs serving serving over 50 crore customers. This Thursday, the board of SBI had cleared the merge plan and had finalised the share swap agreement under which an SBBJ shareholder will get 28 shares of SBI (Re 1 each) for every 10 shares (Rs 10 each). Stated differently, the ratio is 1:2:8. Similarly, SBM and SBT shareholders will get 22 shares each of SBI for every 10 shares they hold.

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS): Indian industr y chambers has raised concerns on the draft Goods and Services Tax (GST) law at a meeting here with Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia, flagging issues like dual administrative control vested and wide discretionary powers for tax authorities. “Provisions may lead to unwarranted disputes in future so it requested to give a re-look the law before finalising,” a Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) representative said after the meeting. “Non-inclusion of electricity will lead to significant economic distortion,” Assocham said in a representation to the government. The chamber also said that on products like petroleum and alcohol, the industries will operate under a hybrid tax regime and will be unable to claim GST credit due to temporary non-inclusion of these products, that could increase costs. “Consequently, some thinking around zero rating or concessional taxation under existing law on the inputs for these industries is warranted,” Assocham said.

adding that in order to enable this, we should have a uniform tax rate throughout the country. The GST will ensure that taxation rates are moderate, which in turn will bring down the cost of doing business, thereby bringing down the cost for end consumers. “You have to have one person being assessed once and not by different tax authorities in different states. This

met in the near future. In the August 9 monetary policy review, the last one before Raghuram Rajan steps down from the governor’s chair, the central bank, while leaving the key policy rates unchanged, maintained that there was an upside risk to inflation, going ahead. This was, “given the stickiness in food and services inflation,” the Ind-Ra report said.

makes doing business easier,” he said. He also said that a large section of the people, who file income tax return don’t actually pay the taxes. Claiming that barring Dubai and Singapore, our tax rates are now becoming more reasonable, he said for indirect tax rates to come down further, there is a need to increase its base and to achieve that “everyone should pay their taxes”. Stating that GST implementation was his immediate challenge, the minister said the next challenge will be strengthening the banks. “The gover nment is working on strengthening the public sector banks and we are determined to do it,” he said. Earlier this month, Parliament passed the much-delayed GST Bill and the Assemblies of Assam and Bihar also did the same. The Bill needs to be passed at least by 17 more states with two-thirds majority for the Bill to get constitutional validity.

cies): The government recently set an inflation target of 4% for the next five years with a margin of 2% on the up- and down-side. In July, both wholesale and retail inflation were at a two-year high of 3.55% and 6.07%, respectively, mainly led by a rise in food prices in the country, which has been on the uptick for a few months now. Wholesale food articles inflation rose to 11.82% in July compared to 8.18% in June. Retail food inflation in the month grew to 8.35%, up from 7.79% in June. At this level, the wholesale and retail inflation are above the comfort level of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), given that it wants to bring down retail inflation to 5% by FY17-end and 4% by FY18-end, India Ratings said in a report. While, going ahead, food prices are expected to cool, but it will only happen in the later part of the year when the kharif crop is harvested. Which means, the infla-

Mumbai, Aug 20 (PTI): Amid intense speculation over the rate of Goods and Services Tax (GST), Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said moderate taxes and high evasions cannot coexist. “If all taxpayers pay their taxes, it will help bring in tax rates further low. The more the evasions and exemptions, the higher will be the tax rate. So, moderate tax rates and evasions cannot co-exist,” Jaitley told a meeting of BJP workers here. The minister was replying to a demand made by Ashish Shelar, Mumbai BJP unit president, to bring the proposed GST rate at 17 per cent. Explaining the rationale further, the minister said when more people evade taxes, it brings in an aberration in tax structures. The proposed uniform taxation regime, GST will integrate the country into one single market by ensuring a free flow of goods and services across the country, Jaitley said,

New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI): Silver cracked below the Rs 46,000-mark by falling Rs 490 to Rs 45,975 per kg on Saturday, reflecting a weak trend overseas amid reduced off-take by industrial units in the domestic market. On the other hand, gold held steady at Rs 31,250 per 10 grams in scattered deals. Traders said that on top of a weak trend overseas, reduced off-take by industrial units and coin makers in the local spot market pulled down silver prices. Globally, silver fell 2.2 per cent to $19.26 an ounce in New York yesterday’s trade. Gold fell 0.81 per cent to $1,341.10 an ounce. In the national capital, silver ready dropped Rs 490 to Rs 45,975 per kg and weeklybased delivery Rs 715 to Rs 45,445 per kg. Anisul Huq posal, saying the formation of a fact-finding commission was crucial to unearth the plot “in totality”. Siddique claimed the plot for the August 15 coup was hatched under a longdrawn process in several phases and some of the behind-the-scene masterminds could have taken part from abroad - sitting in Washington or elsewhere. Sheikh Mujib - fondly called the ‘Bangabandhu’ (friend of Bengal) - was killed in the predawn raid at his

Dhanmandi house along with his wife, three sons, two daughters in-law and several presidential aides and Awami League leaders. His two daughters Sheikh Hasina, now prime minister, and Sheikh Rehana - escaped the bloodbath as they were in Germany. Unrest followed the carnage, and then deputy army chief general Ziaur Rahman emerged as the strongman of Bangladesh. The regimes that took over protected the killers by enacting an indemnity law and rewarded several of the coup plotters with diplomatic posting abroad. In 1996, when Hasina’s Awami League returned to power after 21 years following a landmark general elections, Awami League scrapped the indemnity law and initiated a process of delayed trial of the perpetrators of the carnage. After a protracted legal procedure, 12 former army officers were handed down death sentences and five of them were eventually hanged on January 28, 2010. The rests were tried in absentia.

Japan sits at the junction of four tectonic plates and experiences a number of relatively violent quakes every year, but rigid building codes and their strict enforcement mean even strong tremors often do little damage. Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Iyad Ameen Madani, who is here on a three- day visit from August 19-21, conveyed the grouping’s concerns to the Pakistani side, the Foreign Office here said in a statement. Madani expressed “deep concern over the killing of innocent civilians” in Kashmir and sorrow at the “indiscriminate use of force and gross violations of human rights” in Kashmir by the Indian forces, the statement said.

Washington, Aug 20 (PTI): US Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Michele Thoren Bond would travel to New Delhi next week to hold bilateral consular dialogue with India. Bond will travel to India from August 22 to 26 to review consular operations at the US Embassy in New Delhi, as well as the US Consulates General in Chennai and Hyderabad. “While in India, Assistant Secretary Bond will participate in a bilateral consular dialogue with Indian counterparts as well as meet with the private sector,” the State Department said. The US is committed to long-term bilateral engagement with India on a variety of consular-related issues, including facilitating tourist and business travel through efficient visa adjudications, working together on international adoptions, preventing and resolving international parent child abduction cases, and protecting US citizens overseas, it said.

the coming six months as a regional player. This means to not allow Syria to be divided on any ethnic base, for Turkey this is crucial,” Yildirim said. On Friday Syrian Kurdish authorities evacuated thousands of civilians from Kurdish areas of Hasaka following Syrian government air strikes, the Kurdish YPG militia said. The fighting this week in Hasaka, which is divided into zones of Kurdish and Syrian government control, marks the most violent confrontation between the Kurdish YPG militia and Damascus in the civil war. It came a week after Turkey and Russia, Assad’s strongest military backer, repaired ties following Turkey’s downing of a Russian jet late last year. The YPG and Syrian government forces had mostly left each other to their own devices in the conflict, during which Kurdish groups have exploited the collapse of state control to establish autonomy across much of the country’s north.

ISTANBUL, AUG 20 (AGENCIES): Turkey will take a more active role in addressing the conflict in Syria in the next six months to prevent the war-torn country being divided along ethnic lines, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Saturday. Yildirim also told a group of reporters in Istanbul that while Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could have a role in the interim leadership, he must play no part in its future. Syria’s more than fiveyear conflict has taken on an ethnic dimension, with Kurdish groups carving out their own regions, and periodically battling groups from Syria’s Arab majority whose priority is to overthrow Assad. Turkey fears the strengthening of Kurdish militant groups in Syria will further embolden its own Kurdish insurgency, which flared anew following the collapse of a ceasefire between militants and the state last year. “Turkey we will be more active in the Syria issue in

Dhaka, Aug 20 (PTI): Bangladesh gover nment is planning to constitute a commission to unmask the conspirators behind the assassination of the country’s founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975 that resulted in a coup, Law Minister Anisul Huq said today. “We have been able to expose to justice those who were directly involved in the killing. Now those who were behind- the-scene masterminds should be unmasked in the interest of history,” he said at an event at attorney general’s office. “So we are thinking to form a commission to find out their identities,” Huq said. He said if the conspirators of Sheikh Mujib’s killing are dead, they cannot be tried as there is no provision under the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) for posthumous trial. “But if one’s involvement is proved, people will see (the thruth of that person).” Huq’s comments came as Dhaka University ViceChancellor Arefin Siddique recently floated a similar pro-

War Dogs: ‘unimaginable’ true story of two arms dealers Vin Diesel on new Avengers film Dudes” by Guy Lawson, is ultimately what drew Hill and Teller to the film. “The story itself really is just so crazy,” Hill told CNN. “The idea that this actually happened, you would not believe it if didn’t actually go down.” Hill added that as he dug into the complexities of his character, Diveroli, he became more interested in him. “He’s so manipulative and shady and kind of evil,” he said. “But he’s able to pull all of that stuff off because he’s charismatic and able to win people over, so it’s this really tricky kind of balance.” Teller

s The Olympics comes to a close on NBC, the network will tease the start of another great competition: “The Voice” Season 11. Judging by a sneak peek at the new season, which features first-time coaches Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys, it’s going to be eventful. CNN was given an early look at a half-hour season preview of “The Voice” set to air after the Olympic closing ceremony on Sunday, and here’s what you should know. The newest additions to the spinning chairs waste no time making themselves at home. It’s clear from the start that Cyrus and Keys are on a quest to build the strongest teams they can -- even if it means they go toe-to-toe with veteran coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. In the sneak peek, each of the new coaches take different approaches to wooing potential team members, and at times, Levine and Shelton find it hard to compete.

Cyrus plays up her offbeat, youthful energy. At one point, she tells a contestant who wore her grandmother’s vintage vest to the audition that they share “grandma power.” Keys, meanwhile, goes for a warm, personal approach that none of the other three could possibly duplicate. Speaking of Keys, early indicators are she’s going to be the most calculated and deliberate coach during auditions this season. She doesn’t seem like the type who will be turning chair around for just any good singer. Her strategy appears to be seeking out singers who she feels a connection to. One person who ends up on her team calls Keys “honest and real,” and that sums up what Keys’ approach to mentoring will probably be as well. As an artist that puts a lot of stock in authenticity, Keys seems to be on the lookout for artists with strong points of view that she can take to a new level.

Avengers: Infinity War is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The film is currently scheduled for May 4, 2018.

London, Aug 20 (Agencies): Crystal Palace have confirmed the signing of striker Christian Benteke from Liverpool on a four-year deal. Palace have not disclosed the transfer fee they have paid for the 25-year-old Belgium international but it is an initial £27m plus £5m in add-ons, according to Sky sources. The fee easily beats Palace’s previous record purchase, set only last month when they bought Andros Townsend from Newcastle for £13m, and he becomes the fourth new arrival at Selhurst Park this summer following Townsend, James Tomkins and Steve Mandanda. Benteke, who agreed personal terms and passed his medical with the Eagles on Friday, told his new club’s official website: “I’m very happy to commit my future to Crystal Palace and I’m looking forward to meeting the manager, the players and the staff.

Christian Benteke “I feel really happy that the deal has been done and now I can look forward.” Liverpool paid Aston Villa £32.5m for Benteke, who has scored 51 Premier League goals in four years, a year ago and had been holding out for a similar fee despite the player falling out of favour under Jurgen Klopp. Palace manager Alan Pardew revealed at his press conference on Friday - ahead of Saturday’s game against

Tottenham - that Benteke had been on his radar for some time. He said: “It’s important when you lose iconic players to try and replace them with iconic players. We’ve lost two this week, Mile Jedinak and Yala Bolasie. Both were massive figures at this club and we will need to replace them with big figures. “That’s something that didn’t always happen at [former club] Newcastle, unfortunately, so I’m pleased the board have been brave with this move. “He’s someone I know very, very well because I wanted to take him to Newcastle. I thought he’d be a fantastic fit for that club. He got the move to Liverpool and it hasn’t quite worked out. “For us, we need to get him back to doing what he does best. His style of play, the way he feeds off crosses... “He’ll enjoy that with the wide players we have.”

Over 41,000 tickets sold for Rio closing ceremony Rio de Janeiro, Aug 20 (IANS): More than 41,000 tickets have been sold for the closing ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games, spokesman for the RIO-2016 organising committee Mario Andrada has said. “To date, 41,233 tickets to the closing ceremony have been sold,” he said on Friday, reports Tass. “I am sure this figure will grow, since some fans will buy tickets just before the beginning of the ceremony,” he added. Leonardo Caetano, the director of the ceremonies, earlier said that that 3,000 volunteers and 200 professional actors will be involved in the Olympics closing ceremony. The Rio Olympics closing ceremony will be held on August 21 at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium, which can accommodate 78,838 spectators.

Will appeal to the Prime Minister: Narsingh Rio de Janeiro, Aug 20 (PTI): Banned for four years and disgraced after being eliminated from the Olympics Village, dope-tainted wrestler Narsingh Yadav today vowed to take his battle to the Prime Minister’s Office. His dream of representing India in Rio shattered after he was slapped with a four-year ban by Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) for flunking a dope test after WADA challenged the clean chit given to him by NADA, a devastated Narsingh said today that he will fight till the

end. “Meri toh naam badnam hui, isse pura desh pe kala dhabba lag gaya hai (My name has been tarnished, not just me, this ban is a blot on India). Chahe mujhe phaasi ho jaye, mein iski chhanbin karwaoonga, din-raat ek kar doonga (Let me be hanged, I will take this to higher courts and will leave no stone unturned),” the 74kg freestyle wrestler told PTI here. “I will appeal to the Prime Minister to investigate this matter thoroughly. Narsingh further said he could have easily competed in the Olympics had the evidence of wrong doings

Russian Pole Vault star Yelena Isinbayeva announces retirement

Yelena Isinbayeva Rio de Janeiro, Aug 20 (IANS): Russia’s two-time Olympic champion Yelena Isinbayeva announced here on Friday that she’s officially retired from Pole Vault after being elected among four new members to the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Athletes Commission. The 34-year-old saw her

hopes of competing at her final Olympics in Rio crushed when the track and field’s world governing body IAAF banned the entire Russian team but long jumper Darya Klishina in the wake of alleged doping scandal, Xinhua news agency reported. “I’m still an athlete sitting here and talking to you,

but when I walk out of this press conference room I’m leaving as a retired one,” said the current world record holder of 5.06 metres in women’s Pole Vault. “Yelena Isinbayeva is finishing her career as a pole vaulter today. This is my official statement,” the three-time world champion added. The London Games bronze medallist continued: “It’s a hard decision for me, but I’m just leaving pole vault, not sports. “I owned a lot through sports. I lived a perfect competitive career and achieved more than just medals through pole vault. Now it’s time for me to make efforts on improving others’ lives through sports.” The 2004 and 2008 Olympic gold medallist was elected to the IOC Athletes Commission alongside with Germany’s fencing champion Britta Heidemann, South Korean paddler Ryu Seung-min and Daniel Gyurta from Hungary of swimming for a term of eight years on Thursday. “I thought I would be very sad (about retirement) but the election has inspired me,” said Isinbayeva, who has set 28 world records during her career.

Cincinnati, Aug 20 (Agencies): Andy Murray overcame a back injury to beat Bernard Tomic 6-4 6-4 and seal a place in the Cincinnati Open semi-finals. The British No 1, who won his 600th ATP Tour match on Thursday, secured a straight sets win over the Australian, although it was not as easy as the scoreline might suggest. Murray needed treatment early in the first set for a lower back issue but claimed a vital break in the fifth game and, despite looking a little heavy-legged at times, safely served out the set. Tomic held serve in his first four games of the second but had a meltdown in the ninth game as Murray sent down some huge returns to break the Australian to love. Murray then made the most of his first match point to secure victory, his 21st on the bounce, and set up a tough semi-final clash with Canada’s Milos Raonic. “I knew that coming straight from the Olympics I was going to be tired. But I’ve still managed to win,” Murray said. “Conditions help a bit. There are not a lot of long rallies. I have a few days off when this week is done and then I’ll prepare for the US Open.”

Having missed two penalties in midweek against Steaua Bucharest, he sent Shay Given the wrong way from 12 yards to open the scoring in the 27th minute, and the striker swiftly added a second with a fine header nine minutes later. Bojan Krkic pulled one

back from the penalty spot for the hosts (49), but Nolito wrapped up the three points for Pep Guardiola’s side with two late goals (86, 90+5). Guardiola made one change from Man City’s Champions League first-leg win as Willy Caballero continued in goal, and the visitors picked up from where they left off in Romania. Aguero, who hit a hattrick in the 5-0 victory but fluffed his lines twice from the spot, made no mistake this time after referee Mike Dean penalised Ryan Shawcross’ grab on Nicolas Otamendi at a corner. Raheem Sterling had twice gone close before Ague-

finished from 12 yards to halve the deficit. The hosts went close to an equaliser when Allen’s curling corner almost caught out Caballero at his near post, and they had another penalty appeal denied when Jon Walters went down under Sterling’s challenge with ten minutes to play. The introduction of Kelechi Iheanacho changed the complexion of the closing stages as the Man City substitute played a key part in Nolito’s late double, sealing victory in Guardiola’s first Premier League away game. He latched on to David Silva’s through ball and rounded Given before showing good composure to square for Nolito, who drilled home his first Premier League goal. The new Man City signing didn’t have to wait long for German defender Philipp his second, tapping into an empty net deep into stoppage time after Iheanacho’s dummy ro’s strike as a jittery Stoke allowed Sterling to race clear defence struggled to cope with and set up his team-mate. Wayne Rooney sent over a sweet cross and Ibrahimovic rose above Jose Fonte to power home an unstoppable header. Not long after the break Claude Puel thought his side had levelled the game when the impressive Dusan Tadic headed past David de Gea from inside the six yard box but the linesman, correctly, adjudged the Serb to be in an offside position. On 52 minutes Utd doubled their lead, Jordi Clasie punished for a silly trip on the surging Luke Shaw with the award of a penalty and Ibrahimovic demanded the ball before sweeping home the spot-kick. Southampton should probably have taken the lead when the game was scoreless, Nathan Redmond’s cross to Dusan Tadic would have been nodded into an open goal were it not for the former over-hitting it, while Tadic’s sharp first-time ball released Long but the Ireland forward’s shot was weak and easy for de Gea. They almost got back into the game in the final quarter hour when Long glanced a header just wide before Tadic blazed wide late on. Germany win women’s football gold India’s Khushbir finishes 54th in 20km Race Walk

Germany women football team celebrate with their gold medals. Rio de Janeiro, Aug 20 (IANS): The German women’s soccer team has defeated Sweden 2-1 to win the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Both teams on Friday squandered scoring opportunities in the first half, but German striker Dzsenifer Marozsan broke the deadlock just three minutes after the restart, beating Sweden goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl with a shot that curled just inside the left post, Efe news reported. Germany went up 2-0 in

the 62nd minute after Swedish defender Linda Sembrant’s attempted clearance after a free kick ended with the ball in the back of Lindahl’s net. The Swedes cut the deficit in half five minutes later with a goal by substitute Stina Blackstenius. At that point, most of the 62,000-plus spectators in the Maracana stands got behind the Swedes in hopes of seeing them equalise and force the match into extra time, as the Scandinavian side did previously against the defending

champion United States and Brazil. The match that brought Germany its first gold medal in women’s football was played at Rio’s legendary Maracana stadium, where the German men won their fourth FIFA World Cup in July 2014. While the German women took the bronze medal at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Games, Sweden, who had to defeat the three-time and a potent Brazilian side to reach the final, entered the competition having never won a medal.

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 20 (IANS): India’s Khushbir Kaur finished 54th, while Sapna failed to finish in the women’s 20km Race Walk event at the Rio Olympics here on Friday. The 23-year-old Khushbir took one hour, 40 minutes and 33 seconds to complete the distance. Khushbir’s show was far from her national record mark of one hour, 33 minutes and 37 seconds. The Asian Games 2014 silver medallist completed the first 10km in 47:35 minutes and was in the 48th position. Till then, she was 2:11 minutes behind the leader. But afterwards, racewalker from Amritsar ran out of gas as the race progressed and finished 54th and was 11:58 minutes behind the winner -Liu Hong of China, who won the race in 1:28:35. Sapna failed to finish just after the 8km mark. The silver medal went to Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez, who finished two seconds be-

hind Hong. Maria became the only second Mexican woman to claim an Olympic medal in athletics, following the silver medal by Ana Guevara in the women’s 400m in 2004, reports Xinhua. “I feel good. I was hoping to get the gold and I raced as hard as I could and gave it everything. But I am happy. Next time I will have to race harder,” she said. Lu Xiuzhi took the bronze medal with a timing of 1:28:42. Hong and Xiuzhi had finished fourth and sixth in the 2012 London Games. The 29-year-old Hong said: “It was hard because the weather wasn’t that good. The only thing I could do was keep going, do my best and try to make it perfect. “It means a lot to me. I have been doing this sport for more than 10 years now,” Liu added. “This time I was doing my best to get a medal and I am pleased I could get the gold.”

Britain bag maiden women’s hockey gold

Team GB’s women’s hockey team celebrate after beating Holland in the final in Rio. Rio de Janeiro, Aug 20 (IANS): Britain’s women’s hockey team won the Olympic gold medal for the first time thanks to a stunning 2-0 (3-3) shoot-out triumph over defending champions and the Netherlands, while Germany defeated New Zealand 2-1 to take bronze here. Goalkee per Maddie Hinch was the heroine for Britain on Friday, making numerous key saves in the match before keeping a clean-sheet in the shoot-out as she played a starring role to help her team achieve a moment of sporting history. The result ended the Dutch quest for a third successive Olympic gold medal. Hinch provided early evidence of the pivotal role she would play by saving a penalty stroke from legendary Netherlands captain Paumen before Lily Owsley gave Britain a first quarter lead.

NE Utd to face Kerala Blasters in ISL-3 opener Mumbai, Aug 20 (IANS): Indian Super League (ISL) franchise NorthEast United FC will take on Kerala Blasters FC in the opening match of the third edition of the glamorous football league at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Guwahati. The opening ceremony of the third edition will be hosted in Guwahati, Assam, the promoters of the football league announced through a release on Saturday. By awarding Guwahati the rights to host the opening ceremony, the organisers wished to celebrate North East’s contribution to the development of Indian football and recognise the potential it has in shaping the future of the sport in the country, according to the release. The host club NorthEast United will be led by newlyappointed coach Nelo Vingada while Kerala Blasters FC will be led by Steve Coppell.

World No.1 the Netherlands were almost totally dominant in the second period, levelling the scores within a minute of the restart when Year Lidewij Welten supplied Kitty van Male who made no mistake with a sensational strike into the roof of the net. Although Hinch continued to deny the Dutch at regular intervals and Naomi van As rattled the cross-bar, the Dutch eventually netted again when drag-flick expert Paumen producing a rare strike from a penalty corner to give her team a 2-1 lead. Remarkably, Britain hit back almost immediately when Crista Cullen slapped home from open play just before half time. But the Dutch continued to control the game in the third quarter, launching wave after wave of high paced attacks before making it 3-2

thanks to Van Male’s second of the game. The Netherlands continued to dominate in the fourth and final quarter, but it was the gritty Brits who tied the scores. Hinch, who also starred in last year’s shoot-out victory over the Netherlands in the final of the Unibet EuroHockey Championships in London, made saves from Willemijn Bos, Ellen Hoog and Laurien Leurink before Margot van Geffen crashed her effort against the post with Britain leading 1-0. Margot van Geffen’s miss meant that if Holly Webb scored, Britain would be the Olympic champions for the first time in their history. Webb made no mistake, keeping a cool head to fire past Netherlands goalkeeper Joyce Sombroek to give Britain an incredible victory against all the odds.

Chen Long wins Usain Bolt seals triple-triple at Rio Olympic badminton gold

RIO DE JANEIRO, AUG 20 (Agencies): Usain Bolt drew down the curtain on his brilliant Olympic career by securing a sweep of the sprint titles for a third successive Games when Jamaica successfully defended the 4x100 metres relay crown on Friday. Two days before his 30th birthday, Bolt ran the anchor leg as the Jamaicans won in 37.27 seconds to add the relay gold to the 100 metres and 200 metres titles he had won for a third straight Olympics. His ninth gold medal drew him level with Paavo Nurmi, the Finn who dominated distance running in the early 20th century, and American sprinter and long jumper Carl Lewis as the most successful Olympic track and field athletes. “There you go, I am the greatest,” Bolt told reporters. “I am just relieved. It’s happened. I am just happy, proud of myself. It’s come true. The pressure is real. I look at it as an accomplishment.” Ryoto Yamagata ran a blistering opening leg for Japan, who won a stunning silver for their first Olympic medal in the sprint relay in 37.60, improving the Asian record they set in qualifying. Trayvon Bromell’s dip for the line was so aggressive that he stumbled over and the United States thought they were settling for bronze in 37.62. The situation went from bad to worse, though, when they were disqualified along with Trinidad and Tobago. TV

Bolt and his team-mates (left to right) Yohan Blake, Asafa Powell and Nickel Ashmeade celebrate their triumph. pictures showed Bromell stepping into Bolt’s lane in the run to the line. “I’m hoping we can an appeal of some kind, but we’re seeing that the result is a disqualification, so I’m hoping we can appeal that,” said former world record holder Tyson Gay. Canada were elevated to bronze after their run of 37.64, a national record which gave Andre de Grasse his third medal of the Games after his

bronze in the 100m and silver in the 200m. It was the only medal that Bolt was going for that required the input of anyone else but Asafa Powell, Yohan Blake and Nickel Ashmeade gave the double sprint world record holder the narrowest of leads at the final exchange. That was always going to be enough, though, and Bolt powered down the straight to finish five metres clear of Japan’s Aska Cambridge.

Gay was the last man to beat Bolt in a major championship final - in the 200 metres at the 2007 worlds in Osaka - and despite his disappointment at the disqualification he had nothing but praise for the Jamaican. “He’s a great sprinter,” Gay said. “That’s just selfexplanatory. Words can’t describe that type of a guy and what he’s done for the sport. Everybody just appreciates what he’s done.”

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 20 (Agencies): China’s Chen Long won gold Saturday in men’s singles event in badminton, handing Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei his third straight Olympic silver medal and signaling Chen’s place as the game’s new power. Chen fell face down on the court then rose weeping after his 2-0 victory. He then threw three rackets and his shirt into the crowd, which was largely filled with Chinese supporters, before draping himself in the Chinese flag. Lee was world No 1 and the favorite coming in. But he faced massive pressure not to lose another Olympic gold, and was coming off a hard-fought match a day earlier against China’s Lin Dan, the man who beat him in the last two Olympic finals, that felt more like a gold-medal contest than a semifinal. The Chinese shuttler led early in the first game of the best-of-three match then trailed before capitalizing on repeated Lee errors at the net to pull ahead and win 21-18. Chen then fought off an early Lee lead in the second game to overpower the Malaysian 21-18. Though Lee played aggressively, often staring Chen down after winners, Chen seemed to have an answer to both Lee’s power, parrying his smashes, and to his touch, repeatedly finding his drop shots and lifting them safely toward Lee’s backcourt. Chen’s smashes more often found the lines for winners and his subtle net shots often had Lee flustered.
