KO H I M A , AU G 2 1 (NPN): With the objective of coming closer to the people by directly connecting to them through social media platforms, the chief minister, TR Zeliang, on Monday launched his official accounts on facebook, twitter and Instagram.

The official lunching programme was held at State Banquet Hall, here wherein a documentary on “T.R Zeliang, The Story So Far” was also released.

Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), Neiphiu Rio, released the documentary while parliamentary secretary DIPR and SIRD, Imtikumzuk, launched the chief minister’s social media accounts.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, state chief minister, TR Zeliang, said social media network has become one of the most attractive tools to connect to people and disseminate information quickly.

The chief minister also asked people to use social media for constructive purposes and desist from using it for harmful and negative purposes.

August 22 CEC meeting illegal: Dr. Shürhozelie D I M A P U R , AU G 2 1 (NPN): Drawing attention to the summoning of a meeting of the NPF Central Executive Council(CEC) , NPF president, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu on Monday stated that the meeting convened by the “so-called NPF”, on August 22, 10 a.m. at hotel Legacy, Bayavü Hills was illegal. In a press note, Dr. Liezietsu said neither he nor the CEC has authorized “such unconstitutional meeting”. He also warned that those attending the meeting would be doing so at his/her risk of being automatically disqualified/ debarred/suspended from the NPF’s primary and active membership.

Postal strike on Aug 23

D I M A P U R , AU G 2 1 (NPN): Responding to a strike call by National Federation of Postal Employees, the Postal Employees’ Union, Nagaland Division would participate in the oneday nationwide strike on August 23. In a press release, AIPEU-P III Nagaland divisional secretary, Daniel Domeh stated that the proposed strike was to press for 10-point charter of demands of the NFPE etc. The union informed that all public transaction in the post office across Nagaland would remain closed on that day.

Neiphiu Rio releasing the documentary ‘T.R. Zeliang, the story so far’ at the State Banquet hall, Kohima on Monday.

He expressed confidence that people of the state would take it as positive initiative of the state government. Zeliang also assured to use social media meaningfully and for the betterment of the society.

The chief minister also appealed to social media users to render constructive suggestions, share views and opinions so government machineries could take up such input for improvement of government and overall development of the state.

Commenting on his documentary, Zeliang acknowledged the director and writer of Coreconxept Entertainment New Delhi

for taking the pains and travelling to his native Nkilo village. The chief minister said his village was underdeveloped unlike the neighbouring villages.

Zeliang said the short film on his life invoked great sense of humility to his family members. He expressed hope that documentary of his life would not only serve as living testimony of his struggle, failures, joys, sorrows and fulfilment but also a source of inspiration to others.

Writer and director Coreconxept Entertainment, Duyu Tabyo, in his brief address on the documentary, said the short film was not a

fiction but unfolding of truth that people needed to know.

He said the documentary was done after conducting extensive research and meeting different people from the village, adding that what has been documented was all true.

Tabyo said the documentary was made to showcase the inspiring life of a small boy, braving all harsh and difficult life became the chief minister of the state.

Earlier, state Chaplin Rev. Kuzierang Thou invoked God’s blessings while Nise Meruno and Methseu Therie enthralled the audience with their songs.

Cabinet ministers, legislators, senior government officials, family members and relatives attended the programme.

Meanwhile, the chief minister sent his first tweet from his personal twitter handle @TRZeliangCM, which read “Glad to be here.

Hoping to share my daily activities and also hear from you as we walk together towards progress and development. #Nagaland”. Zeliang also has his official twitter account @mediacellcmo, but has been protected from public viewing.

ACAUT invites CM, ministers to Aug 25 rally

D I M A P U R , AU G 2 1 (NPN): After ACAUT Nagaland has issued an open invitation to the state chief minister T.R.Zeliang and his council of ministers to speak in front of the public at the August 25 rally at Naga Shopping Arcade which has been dubbed as “The Mother of All Rallies”; it remains to be seen if the CM and his colleagues will bite the bullet. According to ACAUT media cell, the invite would provide an opportunity for laying down a road map to combat corruption and also a promise from the CM and his colleagues to stop the “ongoing exercise of withdrawal of funds from the Finance department for vague/suspicious projects running into thousands of crores of rupees.”

Recalling several disclosures made to public through the media, ACAUT maintained that apart from the siphoning of funds meant for roads, bridges

and diversion of PDS items, etc., corruption would also include: non-payment of teacher salaries for months, backdoor appointments, wastage of public funds in buying luxury vehicles, the ‘unclean’ general elections, and most importantly corruption in the form of factionalism which has divided the Naga movement.

ACAUT had earlier stated that the rally was organized to voice out against the pathetic state of affairs in Nagaland which has been crippled with blatant corruption and decay in governance. These have led to widespread resentment in all quarters, including students, teachers and the common man. Further, ACAUT said that the response from people of various districts to speak at the rally and share their experiences dealing with corruption was overwhelming.

ACAUT has so far, allotted time to the following organizations to speak

at the rally Angami Youth Organisation, Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem, Zunheboto Town Youth Organisation, Rengma Selo Zi, Tseminyu; Lotha Youth Hoho, Wokha; Phek Town Youth Organisation, Zeme Students’ Union, Peren and Chamber of Commerce bodies (MCCI, Mon) and ZCCI. Besides individuals like Khekiye K. Sema, Z. Lohe, T. Solo and others, ACAUT said more speakers would be added in the runup to the programme.

It also informed that the NTC, ENPO and Naga Council Dimapur would be part of the platform.

ACAUT has once again appealed to the Naga people to attend the rally “in thousands and lakhs” preferably in traditional attire. According to ACAUT, since the rally was to begin at 3.30 p.m. sharp and likely go on for three hours, every individual has been requested to come to the venue with candles.

Nagaland State VDB Association clarifies on MGNREGA funds issue

D I M A P U R , AU G 2 1 (NPN): Nagaland State VDB Association (NSVDBA) while appreciating the concern shown by various organisation and individuals, especially ACAUT, for protecting the due developmental activities of the people of Nagaland and issues concerning the rural people in particular, has, however, sought to clarify certain issues that were created due to “lack of genuine communication gap and mis-information”.

In a press release NSVDBA president, Tohoshe Awomi; vice president, Imtinungba Atsongchanger; general secretary, Manthungo Kikon, and joint secretary, Kezhaselie Angami, said that the association has been actively involved in the process of developmental fund release.

They said that the association takes up necessary issues with the Centre and the state government on making centrally sponsored schemes (CSS) funds available and its timely release by the state government and the finance department. NSVDBA said it ensures that regular flow

DMC notifies on RST receipt D I M A P U R , AU G 2 1 (NPN): Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) in an order has informed all colony council chairmen and GBs under Dimapur municipality that along with other necessary documents, no certificate would be issued without the latest Residential Sanitary Tax (RST) receipt of the individual concerned.

DMC administrator, Moa Sangtam, stated that the order was as per the resolution adopted at a joint meeting held on July 20, between DMC, DUCCF and GBs’ Union Dimapur, for collection of RST and as per decision taken on August 17 at a joint meeting between DMC and ward sanitation committees. With effect from September 1, Moa Sangtam said that the RST receipt would be mandatory for any kind of certificates to be issued by the colony authority.

of funds were made since MGNREGA funds were demand driven and any delay in release of CSS funds by the state government attracts deduction and penalties by the Centre. It added that delay leads to reduction of CSS funds to the state. NSVDBA said the pressure impressed on the department and the state government has thus ensured that Nagaland has been receiving CSS grants on a regular basis.

As per the rural development department report, NSVDBA said the following funds were received during 2016-2017. (See table) Explaining the procedure of fund release, the association said MGNREGA funds once released by the state finance department were then released to the respective districts, which were then directly credited into the VDBs account

It stated that no MGNREGA funds could be released from the VDB account without the approval and information of the VDB secretary since the accounts were jointly operated between the BDO, village council chairman and the VDB secretary of each village.

NSVDBA maintained that funds released were not on a uniform allocation as there were guidelines and provisions on providing special allocation to special activities such as SAGY villages, PPI blocks.

The association stated that those villages selected for convergent activities, such as piggery project with veterinary department, cardamom plantations with horticulture department, Angawadi centres with social welfare department were provided additional man days.

KOHIMA, AUG 21 (NPN): Four unidentified miscreants, reportedly armed, barged into the residence of Kelei Zeliang, secretary to Chief Minister & Rural Development, at Lerie Chazou colony, Kohima Monday evening around 5.30 and threatened the members present in the house with dire consequences.

When contacted, Kelei Zeliang informed Nagaland Post that he was on his way from Peren when the incident took place. He said one of them was carrying a concealed weapon.

He said the miscreants reportedly threatened to kill him, the family members and destroy his house if he did not tender apology to their “Boss”.

“I do not have any problem with anyone nor did I argue with anybody,” he said. Kelei said he was not aware which or what “boss” the miscreants were referring to. Kelei said that the miscreants refused to disclose the name of the “boss” when those present in the house asked them.

2-lane project: RLA wants re-measurement DIMAPUR, AUG 21 (NPN): Rengma Landowners Association (RLA) has appealed to the deputy commissioner (DC), Kohima for “re-measurement/assessment of land/property falling under NH-61 from 40/000 Km to 72/400 Km.” In a representation to DC Kohima, Rengma Landowners Association president, Hilo Tep and general secretary Kehoyi Kez alleged that in the “list of land affected”

(two lane project), issued by the concern department, fake land/properties owners were included in the compensation list while some genuine landowners were not included.

RLA further alleged that even in the latest list, more names of those who do not own any land/property along NH-61 were included, making it to 384 landowners against the first list-- 293. (Cont’d on p-7)

Aadhaar enrolment drive to cover left-out population D imap U r , Aug 2 1 (NPN): The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Regional Office, Guwahati has informed all responsible who have not enrolled for Aadhaar to get themselves enrolled at the nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre.

In a press release, UIDAI Regional Office, Guwahati, stated that state government was leaving no stone unturned to enrol the left-out population. It stated that to fast track the Aadhaar enrolment process, the state government had designated the Commissioner, Nagaland as the Nodal department and DC offices, ADC offices, SDO offices etc. were on-boarded as enrolment agencies.

He also mentioned that Nagaland was the first state in the country to invest state resources including financial investment in knowledge support for Springshed Development, without any additional external support.

Northeast co-ordinator (PSI, Dehradun), Khrolhiweu Tsuhah highlighted on the status and

progress of the programme through a collaborative effort involving village communities.

Secretary, Land Resources, Y. Kikheto Sema applauded the departmental officers and staff for their sincerity and dedication towards their assignments saying that they do things differently. He further stressed that though the government did not provide any additional funds for Springshed development he was pleased with the progress made in the field of Springshed development. He further requested ACWADAM, Pune and PSI, Dehradun, to continue partnering the state in knowledge, decision and action related activities.

Altogether there were 50 (fifty) participants for the advanced training on Springshed management in all the districts of Nagaland.

ZLC, ZCN meet; passes 4-point resolution

DIMAPUR: Zeme Council Nagaland (ZCN) organised a joint consultative meeting with the Zeme Literature Committee (ZLC) on August 19 at Jalukie, presided over by ZCN president, Raithu Elu. A press note by ZLC general secretary, N. Haisoyi Ndang stated that during the meeting, a four-point resolution was adopted for the interest of Zeme people of Peren district. It resolved that there shall be a single body “Zeme literature Committee Nagaland” as to evolve a common Zeme language “Zeme Let” as a subordinate body to Zeme Council Nagaland. Its second resolution

stated that work done by the old literature committee shall be cross-examined and evaluated to make a cohesive common language acceptable to all the Zeme people. Thirdly it resolved that an executive member from the previous literature committee namely Ikulung Ilunglung has been inducted as executive member to the present active ZLC, Nagaland. Its fourth resolution stipulated that nomenclature of “validating committee” as a sub-committee has been renamed as “Zeme Textbook publication board”.

It further stated that prior to 1978 Angami dialect was imparted as a

medium of learning and instruction in all the government schools upto Class V in Peren district. ZLC, however stated that under the “transitional circumstances”, it was necessary to be familiar with the Zeme elders dialect. In this regard, a translator post was created and appointed in 1978 for the Zeme people of Peren district, stated the release.

However, ZLC pointed out that the idea of imposing a particular village linguistic accent for all the school textbook was vehemently opposed by the rest of the Zeme community. Due to this issue, for the last 39 years, majority of schools

in Zeme area had refused to collect textbooks supplied by the school department of Nagaland.

ZLC further stated that a nomenclature known as “Zeme Literature Committee Nagaland” was established for all the Zeme people and brought out a fundamental dictionary known as “Zeme Let” comprising of all the Zeme linguistic entities. In this regard, ZLC stated that a memorandum has also been submitted to the government. Earlier, the session began with the invocation prayer offered by Namlia and vote of thanks was delivered by president ZCN.

CVSU, STH condemn attempt to abduct and molest minor DIMAPUR: Chekiye Village Students’ Union (CVSU) has expressed utmost concern over the attempt to abduct and molest a 13 year old child at Chekiye village on August 20.

that the culprit should not be released from custody at any cost. CVSU expressed that “there was serious apprehension that the culprit is a habitual offender and will continue to commit such immoral and demonic acts” if released from custody.

CVSU urged upon all the law enforcing agency and the concerned author-

ity not to show any form of leniency towards the child molester and to give befitting punishment in the best interest and safety of the society.

DIMAPUR: Naga Scholars’ Association (NSA) New Delhi organised a panel discussion on “changing dynamics of politics in Nagaland” at SIS, JNU New Delhi on August 18.

A press note by NSA president, Dr. Zuchamo Yanthan stated that the interpretation of the genealogy and the evolution of Naga politics by the three panelist, Dr Walunir Tzudir, AC Kharingpam and James Pochury witnessed a healthy debate and deliberative session.

rhetoric rather than practical engagements, aimed at addressing the need of the hour.

The Nagas, he observed, were governed by aliens who were more interested in big talks instead of providing a working solution on the ground level.

He said that the blame for this complete turnabout lay not just with the leaders but the masses or the citizens themselves who have embraced what they have rejected earlier. This “job politics” or “the politics of appeasement” has led to a bankruptcy of ideas, he added.

AC Kharingpam, talks revolved around the question of what amounted to

change and the importance of mapping it out, keeping in mind the reality of the existential experiences there of politics. He stressed that the change in politics was not all about what has been but what has been left out or been denied or what has not been voiced out. He pointed out that the recent changes or dynamics in the structure of the politics of Nagaland, were factors such as the rise of NPF, with its pan Naga identity, the growth or the receding influence of NPMHR, the recently declared framework agreement, the role of church, the demise of student politics such as the NSF and the NSUD and the rise of regionalism.

J a m e s P o c h u r y, stressed on the need for a participatory democracy, if at all the focus was on solutions rather than the problems that revolved around issues that the Nagas were faced with today.

The wedge, between the powerless and the powerful, has grown to an extent that there is no easy solution but to engage with the systemic issues, he added.

The answer he proposed lay not in transfer of power from one hegemonic group to another but in the transfer of power to a more “community-centered participatory structure” that is reflective of a “noncentralized system which is more democratic.”

DIMAPUR: Nine students of LLB final year of Kohima Law College (KLC) attended the Asian conference for law students held at Bangkok, Thailand from August 11 to 16.

A press note by KLC professor in-charge, Kezhokhoto Savi stated that speakers from South Korea, Germany, India, America & Singapore covered various topics from Christian perspective and devotional services on the calling of a Christian

lawyer was also held. The conference was held under the theme. “Redeeming Law: Christian calling and the legal profession”.

After their return, the law students held thanksgiving programme on August 20, at the residence of Kezhokhoto Savi where every student shared their experiences and challenges to attend the great teaching on the calling of Christian lawyers.

DAN chairman addresses 8th Western Angami A/C DIMAPUR: DAN chairman, Kuzholuzo Nienu MLA on Monday categorically termed Neiphiu Rio assigning himself as interim president and now president of the NPF party was just a mockery and to confuse the people.

Addressing the party leaders of the 8th Western Angami A/C at its office, the DAN chairman said that in any Christian church, an expelled/suspended member of the church cannot demand the pastor to step down and proclaim himself to be the pastor, nor could he demand that Church keys or its belongings be handed over to him.

He questioned on how an expelled/suspended member of the NPF has directed its legitimate president, Dr. Shürhozelie to step down and demand that the NPF properties be handed over to them.

Terming the recent dismissal of the SLP by the Supreme Court as nothing, stating that it was a petition filed against the Governor for summoning an emergent assembly session, the MLA said that since the assembly was also already conducted therefore the judgement of the SC does not hold any valid point.

He said that the main issue which now lay in the court was the recognition of Ki-

yanilie or TR’s whip.

Neinu expressed optimism that Supreme Court would uphold the Constitution of India in true spirit and deliver its verdict soon.

He said that if the SC announced its verdict according to the law provided under the Constitution of India, then the Rio & TR group have nowhere to escape but their only weapon would be to play delay tactics with the Court hearings and rule the state unconstitutionally.

DAN chairman said that if the expelled/suspended rival NPF MLAs managed to “purchase the Court with their mighty account and the judgement

is not delivered to the Naga people under the provision of the Indian Constitution”, the Indian Government should keep in mind to set the Naga people free and let the Naga people have its own constitution, he added.

Commenting on the action of the suspended and expelled NPF MLAs of the Rio/TR group to destabilize the party, the MLA said that since they have been suspended and expelled from the party they had freedom to merge with any party.

DAN chairman expounding on some runaway party workers said, “If we are purchased today,

where will be our respect tomorrow”, adding that even the concerned persons who had purchased them would not have trust.

The MLA also said that no force can pull down the NPF in the coming 2018 election and called upon the party workers to be prepared and send the best candidates for the coming election and serve the party and the people in true spirit.

Kohima division president, Gonei-u Sirie also spoke on the occasion.

The meeting was attended by the leaders of the 8th Western Angami A/C representing from central, division, A/C and unit levels.

1st NCF conclave held in Dimapur; passes three-point resolution

DIMAPUR: Naga Christian Fellowship (NCF) conclave, a biennial programme for all the NCFs all over India was held first time in Nagaland at Dimapur Rengma Baptist Church from August 18 to 20, where all the NCF pastors and leaders participated and shared their challenges and experiences in their ministry.

A press note by Nagaland Missions Movement (NMM) director, Rev Andrew Semp stated that during the conclave, the Naga Christian Fellowship Forum made three resolutions, whereby it would support the Clean Election Campaign under the banner of NBCC. It resolved that the next conclave would be held in Bangalore, 2019 and it also resolved that outgoing forum member, Sakurepba Tzudir, pastor NCF Mumbai will be replaced by Toshi Jamir, pastor NCF Mysore.

The release stated that the conclave was a platform where all the NCFs pastors come together for a time of prayer and spiritual renewal. During his welcome address, Rev. Semp affirmed to the pastors that this was an opportunity for them to come out of their cocoons to relax, refresh and rejuvenate their minds and strengths. He commented that this was a time of remarkable change with great challenges and exciting opportunities. He said that coming together in a forum like this would ensure and help NCFs to continue to stay strong, relevant, connected and be on the task.

sued two month after Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh announced banning of use of polythene bags while launching the “Segregation at Source” campaign on World Environment Day. The order to completely ban use of plastic carry bags was issued under section 4 of the Plastic Waste Management Rule, 2016 notified by the Union ministry of environment, forests and climate change

on March 2016.

State government has the report of rampant use of plastic carry bag which were below the prescribed thickness, which is, less than 50 microns in thickness under the rules. Such plastic materials are hazardous to the environment and harmful both to the human-being and animals, the order stated.

While issuing the order, it cautioned that anybody found dealing in or using

such polythene/plastic carry bags would be punished under section 15 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1966.

Under the Act, anybody who fails to comply with or contravenes any of the provisions of this Act or the rules made or orders is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years or with fine of Rs one lakh or both.

Horthan, 22, and his two flat-mates, all from Manipur, had gone to the Deer Park in Hauz Khas village around 6 a.m. when he jumped into the pond after taking off his shirt, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Chinmoy Biswal said. “His friends said they alerted the locals and police after he failed to come out,” Biswal added. Horthan had arrived in Delhi on July 27 in search of job.

Fire brigade personnel and divers took out his body after an hour, he said.

Guwahati, Aug 21 (PTI): Three more lives were lost today in Assam floods while 12 districts continued to be affected.

Two persons drowned in Darrang and one in Kokrajhar of lower Assam, pushing the death toll in the second wave of floods in the state to 70, an Assam State Disaster Management Authority report said.

Itanagar, Aug 21 (PTI): Security forces in Arunachal Pradesh have arrested two NSCN (I-M) cadres, one NSCN (K) ultra and a NSCN(K) linkman during operations in Tirap and Changlang districts.

A NSCN (R) camp was also busted at Changlang district during the operations, carried out yesterday.

The Khonsa Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of DAO Division of the Army apprehended the two NSCN (I-M) rebels from Bera village near Khonsa town in Tirap district, defence spokesman Colonel Chiranjeet Konwer said. Based on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of the cadres who were trying to intimidate villagers and extort money from them, the AR battalion launched an operation in the village and apprehended the rebels. Steps to be taken to remove Sasikala

V K Sasikala Steps will be taken to remove AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala by convening the general council meeting, senior party leader and Rajya Sabha MP R Vaithilingam said on Monday.

Vaithilingam, a leader of the Palaniswami camp, addressing the merger meet at the party headquarters here, said measures will be initiated soon to remove Sasikala. By making the announcement, the Palaniswami camp has conceded a key demand of the Panneerselvam faction for the merger that took place earlier today. Vaithilingam, a former minister, was named party deputy coordinator just before he addressed the meet.

Ahead of the merger, an AIADMK functionary Avadi Kumar had told reporters that it was the general council which elected Sasikala and any subsequent action in respect of her expulsion can be taken only by it.

India commits $500,000 to IVI for research New Delhi, Aug 21 (IANS): India on Monday entered into an agreement with International Vaccine Institute (IVI) in South Korea under which it has committed an annual contribution of $5,00,000 for vaccine research and development.

The MoU was signed between the Indian Council of Medical Research and the IVI. The partnership will promote further collaborative research activities and training programmes between India and IVI and will ensure IVI achieves its goal of improving health outcomes for the world’s poor by improving vaccine access.

It will also accelerate capacity-building initiatives that will synergize with and benefit India’s vaccine industry, public health and immunization programmes.

IVI is an international non-profit organisation that was founded on the belief that the health of children in developing countries can be dramatically improved by the use of new and improved vaccines.

SC gives bail to Malegaon blast accused Lt Col Purohit

New Delhi, AUG 21 (AGENCIES): Granted bail by the Supreme Court in a blast case on Monday, lieutenant colonel Shrikant Prasad Purohit could be back serving the army.

The army would review his suspension, which could be revoked, and he could be posted to a unit in due course, army officials said on Monday.

Purohit was arrested for his alleged involvement in the September 29, 2008 blast in Maharashtra’s Muslim-majority town of Malegaon that killed six people.

The officer, who participated in counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir and was also with military intelligence, spent almost nine years in judicial custody.

The first serving army officer to be arrested on charges of terrorism, Puro-

hit was granted bail on a personal security of Rs 1 lakh and two sureties of the same sum.

The court directed the officer to surrender his passport and co-operate with the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing the attack that came to be known as an act of “Hindu terror” along with six more cases.

The army suspended the officer shortly after his arrest in the Malegaon case. He was drawing 25% of his pay and allowances while under suspension but it was later revised to 75% following an order by the armed forces tribunal, sources said.

The officer would be attached to an army unit soon and allowed to wear his uniform, sources said.

“An officer under suspension is under the same

restrictions as an officer under open arrest during a general court martial.

During open arrest, an officer has to wear his uniform though he may be permitted to wear civilian clothes,” an army man said.

Granting him bail, the court said there were variations in the charge sheets filed by the Mumbai anti-terrorism squad, which initially probed the case, and NIA. The trial was likely to take a long time and Purohit had been in prison for about eight years and eight months, it said.

Opposing the bail, the NIA said Purohit was the main conspirator and there was sufficient material to prove his involvement in the blast, which amounted to waging war against the state, and, that too, by violent means.

Raipur, Aug 21 (IANS): Three children died in a government-run hospital here on Sunday night after a disruption in oxygen supply, and hospital officials blamed a oxygen plant operation who was found drunk on duty. He has been arrested.

The oxygen pressure at the B.R. Ambedkar Hospital started falling on Sunday night, leading to chaos as many patients complained of unease. Panicky doctors and nurses on duty reported the matter to Chief Medical Officer Anil Baghel, who rushed to the oxygen supply plant. There, the plant operator, Ravi Chandra, 30, was found drunk and sprawled on the floor. He was supposed to be monitoring the oxygen supply.

When Baghel tried to wake him up, Chandra started quarrelling with him.

An upset medical officer then lodged a complaint with the police against Chandra, who was arrested. The incident follows the death of nearly 100 children in a Gorakhpur hospital allegedly due to disruption in oxygen supply.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh expressed grief over the death of the three children. He told Health Department officials to probe the tragedy and said the guilty won’t be spared.

O

n the face of it, the cabinet decision to sanction Rs.60 lakhs for construction of a memorial monolith over the graves of two youths who were killed in police firing in Dimapur on January 31,2017 would certainly be welcomed as it is a compassionate gesture. The two youths were among hundreds of protestors who took to the streets against the decision of the government and also reneging of the understanding with the JCC through the auspices of the NBCC. However, seen from another perspective, the primacy given to the construction of the memorial does not seem in consonance with the public sentiment as put forward by the Joint Coordination Committee( JCC) and the Nagaland Tribes Action Committee(NTAC). The cabinet has also decided to form a government committee with several members to look into the ULB issue and hold consultations with apex tribe organisations and stakeholders. On this issue, it should have preceded the revocation of the September 22,2012 assembly resolution and ensuring that a general consensus was achieved before launching the election mode.

In retrospect, the cabinet decision makes the earlier decision in 2016 look like the government had erred in putting the cart before the horse. In 2016 tribe organisations had been demanding that they should hold indepth discussions so as to arrive at a consensus. However, the government then did not want any of it, as it had its own reasons to push and rush through the elections. Needless to say, there were many candidates who believed in the government ’s wisdom and had campaigned tirelessly and incurred huge amount. In the end, they became among the losers on both sides of the divide- the families of victims and those who had filed nominations and campaigned. In this regard, the government cannot shirk its responsibility. The government itself fell prey to its own folly over pushing the ULB elections when over dozens of government buildings housing crucial departments were burned down on February 2,2017. It was also a sad day for denizens of Kohima who looked on with horror as their beloved town was burned by some protestors. What is happening in Nagaland today is that majority in politics seems to be a license to deviate from the principles of good governance, where majority seems to be a mandate to over ride all concerns. Few questions arise over the sanction of Rs.60 lakhs for construction of the memorial. First, whether it had more to do with the politics of appeasement for some group which had during January-February 2017 spearheaded the public uprising? Paupers are remarkably commonplace! The preaching of today tends to point out a person’s strength of will or the beauty of his character— things that are easily noticed.

The statement we so often hear, “Make a decision for Jesus Christ,” places the emphasis on something our Lord never trusted. He never asks us to decide for Him, but to yield to Him— something very different. At the foundation of Jesus Christ’s kingdom is the genuine loveliness of those who are commonplace. I am truly blessed in my poverty. If I have no strength of will and a nature without worth or excellence, then Jesus says to me, “Blessed are you, because it is through your poverty that you can enter My kingdom.” I cannot enter His kingdom by virtue of my goodness— I can only enter it as an absolute pauper.

The true character of the loveliness that speaks for God is always unnoticed by the one possessing that quality. Conscious influence is prideful and unchristian. cindia Girl’s School in Gwalior abutted a thick forest area. I studied there for two years. The only term in my entire school life that I got a low grade was when I discovered a tiny mandir in the forest and someone told me that, instead of doing my homework, if I prayed and went round the mandir 101 times, I would come first in class for the rest of my life. So I spent two hours there every evening.

Every day brings us a new revelation into the absurdity and unwitting cruelty of humans. A girl interning with People for Animals brought me the information that a rare herb called Hatha Jodi, supposedly from the deep jungles of Madhya Pradesh, was being sold openly on the Net by Flipkart , OLX and various so called “ religious” and “tantric puja” sites and blogs.

Her research on it turned up the fact that this is NOT a plant at all. It is the penis of the monitor lizard. Flipkart was contacted and they apologized and removed the penises “Hatha Jodi” from their website – and warned the sellers.

Flipkart may have done it out of ignorance but sites like Tantraveda, Speaking Tree, Astrovidhi kamiyasindoor, and a host of others that use the Net to find “murgas”

(gullible buyers), know exactly what they are selling.

They show a picture of the Hatha Jodi, then they ascribe all sorts of miraculous powers to it, give you the number to call (no addresses since they are selling all sorts of other illegal wildlife parts as well), tell you that anything can be, and has been, delivered to 40 countries and at the end finish with a rider that they do not “sell” Hathajodi, they simply tell you about it.

No, it is NOT a plant.

No site can tell you the name of the rare plant that supposedly grows in the jungle and is sold by tribals. Some sites say it is a flower, others that it is a root. One site says it is a strange protrusion that grows from the side of a tree. Another says that it is the Martynia annua, a purple flower whose seeds are mango shaped and have a hook which catches the legs of animals as they pass by and transports itself to a place where it flowers again. In Bengali it is called Baghnakhi and in English Devil’s Claw. In Hindi it is Ulat Kanta or upside down thorn. One site shows you a Nepali plant called Birvah with blue and white flowers whose branches. which look like arms. have to be cut. Another shows a pink flower which is a native of Mexico.

The Hatha Jodi is a Bone. It is the penis of the Giant Monitor Lizard, which is a severely endangered, protected species, and each site selling it knows that so,

Don’t kill a useful animal species after talking all this nonsense about it, they will write at the end of the site that it is not for sale. Then they give their phone numbers and obviously the transactions are taking place off the Net. The dried penis looks like two long serrated arms ending in clawed hands which is why it is called Hatha Jodi.

What does the penis supposedly do? If you scrape a little bit of the penis and eat it everyday, or put it in your safe, you will win all your cases, defeat your enemies, become very rich, get rid of ghosts, overcome all obstacles, gain the ability to hypnotize, journey safely, triumph in discussions, interviews, and battles, become very attractive, win all your bets and gain status, find favour with officials.

Needless to say, the frauds selling it also say that it will only work if you spend an even larger sum on doing a tantric puja and the pujari will be nominated by them and you need to buy all sorts of other nonsense from them to “increase” its power. If it doesn’t work it is because you have done something wrong.

Some sites say you have to keep it oiled (obviously since the bone will dry up and disintegrate), wrapped in a red cloth, dipped in sindoor.

Others say that you have to wrap it in elaichi or tulsi leaves, others that you have to put it in a silver box. Some sites say you have to eat it and then come back to them for more when it finishes. One site says that you should sit in your room and hold the penis while simply chanting ‘Om kili kili swaha’ or ‘Om Aim Hreem Kleem’ till something happens. I cannot see how you will become rich doing that, but perhaps the lunatic asylum will take you in at subsidized rates. Other sites have equally strange incantations. But you can say ‘abracadabra’ as well. You need to wash it with Ganges water and either put on a puja table, or in a safe, or a wallet (in this world, the wallet is the puja place!) Others state that it must be left for 40 / 41 days in the same place with a statue of Sri Hanuman and given sandal, flowers and rice every day. Some say that it should be put inside a small box with some camphor, cloves, rice and silver coins.

One site says you have to buy it round Diwali and use it for gambling (how much would a lizard penis be worth on the card table?). Another that on Holi night you have to go to a well and cover it with mud.

Basically you can do with it as you like, and say what you like as long as you pay to buy it. All the sites insist you cannot use a secondhand penis (sorry, plant). It must be bought fresh.

The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau has taken the matter very seriously as there are only several hundred monitor lizards left in India. They have put a special team onto the Net to look at each site and blog and to track down any shops that are selling this. Four kinds of monitor lizards are found in India and all of them are Schedule I species under India’s Wildlife Protection Act 1972, which makes it an offence to conduct trade in the lizards or any of its body parts. The penises are sourced from Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Karnataka, and reach markets through online retailers and dealers who supply them to local shops.

So far raids, conducted by the WCCB and Wildlife Trust of India, have led to the recovery of 210 Hatha Jodis. Raids have also taken place in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan. So far sixty people have been arrested and are in jail for terms that

will go upto 7 years. Some Kuldeep of Indore is selling it through his blog. Now if it was a plant, he would be less cagey. His site has no address or phone number. You have to leave your number with him and he will get back to you.

Seven people who have left their numbers with him on the Facebook blog are also in danger of being arrested.

Unfortunately, as the world grows more difficult to negotiate, people tend to fall back on magic remedies like this. The penis of this poor animal didn’t help it save its own life – much less make it rich. It was hunted down, held in savage restraints, turned over and a sharp knife was used to saw off its private parts. Bleeding, mortally wounded, in dreadful pain, it will live for a few days in shock till it dies. The tribals, who supposedly kill and sell it, have not become rich either. In fact, they are poorer than poor.

The monitor lizard is being hunted to extinction in the forests of Madhya Pradesh because of its penis. There is no mention of hathajodi in tantras, shastras or puranas.

No penis can make you rich or problem-free. Don’t kill a useful animal species because you are too lazy to work. If you know of any sites that are selling this, let me know and I will have them arrested.

Women empowerment has become such an important topic because it is among the most essential tool in a society to get the goal of development. In Naga society women constitute almost half the population, therefore it needs women to be strong physically, mentally and socially for the society to fully develop. It is true that in our society, women are respected and given a top place from ancient time however due to patriarchal system followed by Naga society, in the past women are generally bound by host of social taboos and restrictions which greatly curtailed their participation in the family and society. Naga society has functioned for centuries with men been in control, these mindset undervalued women’s task and her contribution remain usually unnoticed and women remaining in the shadow of men. But we find a lot has changed in the present and women have evolved themselves and are considered as equal to men in today’s scenario. Certain factors such as religion, education and liberating agencies also contributed in the way society looks at them.

However complete transformation in the status of women in Naga society still look to be a long an ardous journey because of the fact that the general public still holds the view that women are not capable or strong enough to participate in areas such as decision making or policy making etc. This outdated

We are not political pundits but as an uneducated so called public leaders that we and our subjects are totally confused and are mentally tormented after Neiphiu Rio who was elected to MP and pave way for a prospective Chief Minister of Nagaland.

Since then, Nagaland is witnessing change of Chief Minister for the fourth time including one year of N Rio’s term in this 12th NLA. Nagas have suffered mentally, financially and unrest due to the Tug of War and Horse trading to cling unto the chair and power beyond our reasoning within the state and outside the

ideas and views have undermined the capabilities of many talented women folks in our society and downplayed the very concept of gender equality.

Here people get confused with two very important issues “lack of crimes against women” and “empowerment of women” which are different. Women empowerment doesn’t mean defying women rather it means replacing patriarchy with parity. The characteristics associated with males and females greatly affect the development of a society.

There are strong evidence from around the world that gender equality accelerates overall economic growth, strengthen democratic governance and reduce poverty and insecurity.Therefore it is high time for the Naga society to wake up and see why many Nations have given so much emphasis on Women empowerment. It is not only to bring equality in the society for both male and female in all areas but it is very necessary to make the bright future of the family, society and country. An empowered mother with child makes the bright future of any nation.

So to empower our women folks, we as a society have to support and give them the opportunity in every field to compete and excel by putting aside all the social and family limitations as well as all the limitation set by customary laws and traditional beliefs. This will

help nurture great talents among our women folks to become future leader which will not only make our society more competitive but will also kill all the demons killing women’s rights and values in the society such as inequality, illiteracy, sexual harassment, female infanticide, domestic violence against women, rape, prostitution, illegal trafficking and other issues.

In recent past, the decision of the NLA to implement 33 percent reservation for womenfolk in Nagaland as per the constitution of the country has resulted in widespread protest by those who opposed the decision. As per the view of many intellectuals, for Naga society to truly empower women, it does not need to have gender sensitive legislation. It just needs to clean up the gender sensitiveness in the existing body of legislation that distort the equality and undermine the empowerment that they already enjoy under the Naga society. Also being an advocate of gender equality, implementation of 33 percent reservation of all elective posts in the land for Woman alone will be fundamentally injustice. All public posts in the land must be open and equal to every male or female. The differences induced on grounds of genders and other social systems are artificial. Creating reservations on those lines will amount to recognizing these differences as permanent and defeat the very purpose of eradicating these social evils.

oeing the lines of its Master, the so-called Media and Press Bureau which we will henceforth refer to as ‘Misinformation and Propaganda Bureau (M&PB)’ to avoid ‘grammatical’ error, as pointed out in the write-up, has ventured out to render yet another “supreme sacrifice” in the Political arena of Nagaland. While M&PB seems to be shedding crocodile tears for its fallen Master backing him through Press Statements at the drop of a hat, the lack of substance in its response on pertinent issues raised by the Chief Minister’s Office is a clear sign of political redundancy.

M&PB may like to recollect how its Master Dr. SL after repeatedly claiming that he took over as Chief Minister only for a period of two to three months, made his son, Khriehu Liezietsu vacate the 10 Northern 1 Assembly seat when the latter was still the Parliamentary Secretary of Youth Resources and Sports, and in the most autocratic way appointed him as Advisor to the Chief Minister with Cabinet Status. The obvious reason for this infamous development, as the world understands, was a result of the hidden ambition of Dr. SL to cling on to the Chief Minister’s Chair till the 2018 General Elections and beyond.

One may recollect how Dr. SL and his Group, defying all logic, termed this as a “supreme sacrifice” for the NPF Party then.

We agree, a Chief Minister cannot appoint himself as Whip of a Political Party nor can a Party President personally authorise a person as Whip of a Political Party. A whip can be appointed under paragraph 2(1) (b) of the Tenth Schedule in accordance with express provisions

in the NPF Party Constitution and if, there is no express provision in the NPF Party Constitution, the thumb rule of Democracy which is the decision of the majority must prevail. Leader of the Legislature Party since May, 2014, TR Zeliang was authorised by a majority of 34 NPF MLAs on 4.7.2017, which was further supported by 3 more NPF MLAs, to function as Whip of the NPF Party which was communicated to the Speaker after which, the Commissioner and Secretary of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly notified the appointment of TR Zeliang as Whip of NPF Party vide Notification No. AS-LEG-91/2003, Dated 19th July, 2017.

In the light of the above, the 10 NPF MLAs who were absent from the proceedings of the House on 19.7.2017 and further violated the NPF Whip issued by TR Zeliang, Whip of NPF and Chief Minister on 21.7.2017, are liable to be disqualified by the Speaker. As such, no amount of Press Statements released to the Media will change the course of Law and its implication. We truly agree that the Law is mightier than the pen.

The patience and silence of the CMO against false and derogatory accusations repeatedly raised in the Media by M&PB must not be mistaken for weakness because every provocation adds fuel to the fire and pushes resolution further away. The Chief Minister’s Office has its own responsibility to run day to day affairs of the State and neither has the time nor will it stoop so low, as to engage in paper-war with a bunch of political desperados in Dr. SL’S M&PB. A quick public view concerning present crisis state also. We do not clearly understand the constitution of any political party nor the constitution of India, but we do understand that every Nation, States, organizations and NGOs are govern by its constitution.

The crux of the political imbroglio in the state started immediately with the selection for the successor of Rio as CM. The game of Tug of War happened between N Rio, Noke, Kaito camp vrs TR and Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, where, TR managed to become the second CM. The second attempt to pull down TR from CM in the guise of ULB election spear headed by the JCC, NTAC and APO. Which resulted in the loss of precious life and destruction of valuable Naga heritage government properties in Kohima.

After the above NGOs demand for TR dismissal

from the CM was successful, the majority of the so-called Law makers of Nagaland urged Dr. Shürhozelie, the president of NPF to rescue the image of the oldest regional party by taking over the chair of the CM of the state.

It was learnt that Dr. Shürhozelie reluctantly to salvage the party and the government accepted the request and took over as the third CM constitutionally and with the full support of the members.

Within a little over four months, another political coup was strategized and toppled Dr. Shürhozelie government in connivance with the BJP and RSS agents.

Here we want to question why those NGOs who make hue and cry pulled down TR just a few months back are silent when TR was brought back to the chair of CM? Or TR return to

the chair after taking a few months break has compromise our loses?

The death of our precious future leaders is still afresh in our memories but the sentiment of the Nagas are being shocked when TR government dismantled the under construction in memory of our martyrs.

We believe that the mortal remains of the heroes may not be even fully decayed as of now and TR is trying to wipe out the memories of our Naga patriotism.

The affair of the state is totally unrest with another development within the NPF party which kept the public into total confusion as we see dual appointment of the same post under two camps, one at NPF Central Headquarter, PR Hill and the other at Hotel Legacy, Bayavu, both claiming to be the original. However, we believe the constitution of India

which is the highest body in safeguarding its citizens will do justice. Therefore, the leaders should not take the public for granted and take us for a ride for their sheer power but to leave all matters under the law. We believe the law will speak for the truth and as we the public, will always stand with the truth.

We also appeal to all the Naga leaders of whatever political party or faction they incline into, to kindly respect your Christian value and principles and use your wisdom accordingly.

When I pass by different streets and localities after work, I notice there are hardly any street lights. At night, individuals frequently tumble and fall over dumping areas too. There have been incidents where criminals grab, rob and assault at night. I would like to suggest the government to implement Automatic Street Light Control System, which automatically switches off lights when sunlight falls on it.

SC verdict on validity of triple talaq today

In the course of the hearing, the AIMPLB issued an advisory to telling the qazis to give an option to Muslim women to opt out of instant triple talaq before giving consent for ‘nikah’.

In their affidavit before the court, they said that qazis all over the country have been instructed that they would while performing nikah, record in the Nikahnama, that the bride has opted out of triple talaq in one sitting.

Senior counsel Salman Khurshid, who was assisting the court in the matter, had said that “What was sinful in theology, can’t be good in law”. “It (triple talaq) is not only not an essential part of

Muslim religion, it is not a part of religion at all. On the contrary it is depreciated by Islam,” he said.

However, the court was not appreciative of the government position that the top court should first pronounce on the constitutional validity of the triple talaq and other forms of talaq, only then it would bring a law.

“We may or may not (decide the issue), but you do,” Chief Justice Khehar had said when the Central government told the court that it should step in a situation where there is no legislation.

While founding its case on gender equality, the government had linked the issue of triple talaq with that of constitutional morality, but the court termed its position a “whitewash”.

As the Centre sought to flag the issue of gender equality of Muslim women vis-a-vis women in other religions and in Islamic countries, the AIMPLB asked it to bring a law taking recourse to Article 25 (2) (b) of the Constitution that permits enactment of law invoking social reforms.

However, AIMPLB had cautioned the constitution bench that “testing the validity of customs and practices was a slippery slope”.

New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI): Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said a solution to the ongoing stand-off between India and China at Doklam would be found soon and hoped that Beijing would make a positive move in this regard. He was speaking at a a function of the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) here. “There will be a solution soon and I am sure China will make a positive move,” he said.

The home minister said he wanted to convey a message to all neighbouring countries that India wanted peace. However, Singh made it clear that Indian security forces were capable of defending the country’s territories.

“Our security forces have all the power to protect Indian borders,” he said.

The ITBP guards the 4,057 km long Sino-Indian border from Jammu and Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh.

India and China have been locked in a face-off in the Doklam area of the Sikkim sector after Indian troops stopped the Chinese Army from building a road in the area. China claimed it was constructing the road within their territory and has been demanding immediate pull-out of the Indian troops from the disputed Doklam plateau. Bhutan says Doklam belongs to it but China claims it to be its territory.

New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI): The Supreme Court today asked the Centre and states how were they monitoring the implementation and hygiene of the mid-day meal schemes in government schools across the country.

A bench of Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachud sought the response of the Centre and the state governments while noting that two committees at the national and state level were suggested to

be set up to monitor various aspects like maintaining hygiene in the mid-day meal schemes in schools.

“How will the implementation of the scheme take place? Tell us and we will crystalise it (in the form of an order),” the bench said and posted the matter for hearing on August 24.

The court was hearing a PIL, filed by NGO ‘Antarashtriya Manav Adhikaar Nigraani’ in 2013, on the issue of midday meals.

Ahmedabad, Aug 21 (PTI): With swine flu claiming nine more lives in Gujarat in the last 24 hours, the death toll in the state due to the infection has reached 280 since January this year.

As per the health bulletin issued today by the state government, nine persons infected with the H1N1 virus, have died in different parts of the state, while 191 new cases were registered in the state today. As many as 17 swine flu patients died across the state yesterday.

At present, 1,981 H1N1 infected-people are being treated in different hospitals across the state.

Among these, 17 are on ventilator, while nine have died during the last 24 hours, the bulletin added.

Besides Gujarat and Telangana, it has so far accepted the roadmaps of Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Jharkhand and West Bengal. It has rejected the one submitted by Bihar government and has summoned its top officials with the revised proposal tomorrow.

It had also accepted the roadmap given by the Jharkhand government for filling up vacancies of over 10,000 constables, 3017 subinspectors and 72 deputy superintendents of police and directed the state authorities to strictly adhere to the time-line.

Jharkhand gover nment had contended that the total cadre strength of its constables was 52,943 and 36,636 constables are currently working and there

result the total vacancies for constables now stood at 10,159.

The apex court had earlier pulled up the Bihar government for seeking two years time to appoint 174 stenographers in the police force and had rejected its roadmap to fill up the vacancies. It had asked the Nitish Kumar government to revise its roadmap and submit a fresh one.

It had on April 24 directed the Uttar Pradesh government to fill over 1.5 lakh police vacancies in fours years, saying this will help in dealing with the law and order problem.

The court had also directed the governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to fill up about 45,000 such vacancies in a time-bound manner, while expressing dissatisfaction with the responses of West Bengal in the matter.

The petitioner had claimed that there were around 5.42 lakh vacancies in the police services in the country.

GJM appeals for peace talks in hills Da r j eelin g ( W B ) , Aug 21 (PTI): The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) today requested the Centre and the Bengal government to initiate talks at the earliest to restore peace in Darjeeling where an indefinite strike has entered its 68th day.

This was the first time that the GJM, spearheading an agitation for a separate Gorkhaland, expressed its willingness to hold talks with the state government along with the Centre.

“The responsibility of ensuring peace in the Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars is not only that of the people who live here, but also that of the central government and the West Bengal government. We, therefore, request both the governments to initiate talks at the earliest so that peace and normalcy can be restored,” GJM joint secretary Binay Tamang said.

The complete change in

the party’s stand came in the wake of GJM chief Bimal Gurung being booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in connection with twin blasts that rocked Darjeeling on Saturday. The GJM, during the two-month long agitation, has repeatedly declined to sit for talks with the state government and had accused it of letting loose a ‘reign of terror’ in the hills.

Reacting to the GJM’s appeal, Darjeeling District Magistrate Joyoshi Das Gupta asked the party to withdraw the shutdown first.

“It is for them to restore normalcy as it was the GJM which has called the shut-

The five-judge bench of Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, Justice Kurian Joseph, Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice S. Mumbai, Aug 21 (PTI): India Inc profits dipped by 15.7 per cent to Rs 87,475 crore in the first quarter of the current fiscal, largely owing to destocking of goods by companies before execution of GST regime from July 1, said a report Monday.

According to an analysis of 2,108 companies by credit rating agency Care Ratings, the corporate net profits stood at about Rs 1.04 lakh crore in AprilJune period of 2016-17. Besides, net sales of companies slowed down to 8.7 per cent in the three months ended June 2017, after registering a growth of 9.5 per cent in the same period year-ago.

“During the first quarter of 2017-18, all companies faced the heat of the uncertainties revolving around the implementation of goods and services tax (GST) by the government as most companies were destocking goods before July 1 and operations were impacted quite markedly,” Care Ratings said.

MUMB A I , A u g 2 1 (Agencies): In a bid to boost its retail loan portfolio, the country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has waived processing fees on most of its retail loans. This is in addition to the existing waiver of fees on takeover of home loans from other lenders.

In a statement issued on Monday, the bank said that it will waive upto 100 per cent processing fee on car loans, personal gold loans and other personal loans. This is part of a ‘festival bonanza’ programme announced by the bank. The waiver of fees on car loans is valid for applications received till December 31, 2017. Separately, SBI has also waived 50 per cent of the processing fee on personal gold loans till October 31, 2017. Till September 30, 2017, customers can avail 50 per cent waiver on processing fee on Xpress Credit - a personal loan offering by the bank. The retail push comes three weeks after the bank announced a cut in the savings bank rate.

NEW DELHI, Aug 21 (Agencies): McDonald’s said on Monday it is shutting 169 restaurants in India after a legal row with a local franchise operator.

The fast food chain’s Indian subsidiary said it was terminating its agreement with Connaught Plaza Restaurant Ltd (CPRL), alleging breach of contract and payment defaults.

The move means all McDonald’s outlets in north and east India including the capital New Delhi will close, although the company said it would look for a new partner.

McDonald’s outlets will remain open in south and west India, where it uses a different franchise operator.

“We have been compelled to take this step because CPRL has materially breached the terms of the respective franchise agreements relating to the affected restaurants,” the company said in a statement.

New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI): Retail inflation is likely to stay well within the RBI’s 2-6 per cent mandate in the coming months and accordingly, the central bank is expected to cut policy rates by 25 bps on December 6, says a report.

According to Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BofAML), inflationary pressures are expected to remain contained by good rains, low growth and subdued imported inflation amid decrease in global commodity prices. The global brokerage firm said that after a pause in the October policy review meet, the Reserve Bank is expected to go for a 25 bps cut in key policy rates in its December 6 meet.

M a d r id, A u g 2 1 (IANS): The hunt for the driver who killed 13 people in the Barcelona attack has been extended across Europe, a Spanish government official said on Monday.

Officials confirmed that Younes Abouyaaqoub, a 22-year-old Moroccan national, was the driver of the van which ploughed into a crowd in Las Ramblas boulevard on Thursday. At least 130 were injured in the attack. Catalan Interior Minister Joaquim Forn told a radio station that authorities were coordinating with police across Europe but there was no indication that Abouyaaqoub had left the region. “This person is no longer just being sought in Catalonia but in all European countries, this is an effort by European police,” Forn said. Police set up 800 vehicle checkpoints and tripled the number of officers working on anti-terrorism operations after the attack, but the fugitive continues to evade them, the Guardian reported.

A family statement said he died of natural causes at his home in Las Vegas on Sunday morning.

Lewis’s 10-year partnership with Dean Martin saw them star in 16 films and achieve huge box office success.

He became the highest-paid actor in Hollywood, chalking up hits such as The Bell Boy, Cinderfella and The Nutty Professor.

Other notable successes included The King of Comedy in 1983, in which he played a talk show host stalked by Robert de Niro.

Fellow celebrities paid tribute as news of his death broke. Whoopi Goldberg called it “a gain for heaven, but big loss for comedy”.

Star Trek actor William Shatner tweeted that the world was “a lot less funnier today”.

Actor Jim Carrey, whose comedy style was strongly influenced by Jerry Lewis, said: “That fool was

no dummy. Jerry Lewis was an undeniable genius an unfathomable blessing, comedy’s absolute. I am because he was!”

There were also tributes from the daughters of Lewis’s longtime associates Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.

Deana Martin also wrote on Twitter: “I’m heartbroken at the loss of our life-long friend (Uncle) Jerry Lewis. I’ve loved him all my life and will miss him greatly.”

The White House later released a statement praising “the extraordinary life of one of our greatest entertainers”, adding that Lewis “touched the lives of millions”.

“Jerry lived the American Dream - he truly loved his country, and his country loved him back,” Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement posted on Twitter.

Lewis was born Joseph Levitch in Newark,

New Jersey, to RussianJewish parents who were both in show business.

He started performing on stage at the age of five alongside his parents.

Lewis teamed up with Dean Martin in the late 1940s, acting the goofy sidekick to Martin’s suave persona.

Over the next 10 years they appeared in nightclubs, on television and in movies, but their partnership ended with a bitter split.

In the early 1970s he made the infamous Holocaust drama, The Day the Clown Cried, about a clown thrown into prison and eventually used to entertain children and lead them into the concentration camp gas chambers. It

remains unreleased.

Lewis was also the host of a long-running telethon which raised many millions of dollars for muscular dystrophy.

In 1995, he became the highest-paid star in Broadway history as Mr Applegate in the musical Damn Yankees. He also won acclaim as a writer.

In his later years, however, he courted controversy with racist and misogynistic jokes, and in 2007 he was forced to apologise after making an anti-gay slur during a telethon.

In an interview, Lewis once said the key to his success had been in maintaining a certain child-like quality, but added: “I’ve had great success being a total idiot.”

“I look at the world through a child’s eyes because I’m nine,” he told Reuters in 2002.

“I stayed that way. I made a career out of it. It’s a wonderful place to be.”

Lewis also achieved great popularity in France where he was hailed as “le Roi du Crazy” (“the King of Crazy”). He was inducted into the Legion

of Honour, France’s highest award, in 1984.

he first Nepali gospel singing competition for Nepali churches in around Dimapur was organized by Nepali Baptist church Chümukedima youth department was held on August 20 at the church premises.

Speaking as the guest, Tow n B a p t i s t C h u r c h Chümukedima, youth director, Kezha Shuya said music plays an important role in a youth’s life and encouraged each participant to glorify the Lord with their own God given talents.

The main motive behind the event was to nurture and provide platform for the upcoming singers,

teenagers and musicians of Gorkha Christian youths in Dimapur and help them develop their musical skills.

The music ministry of youth department also aimed to make use of music to strengthen friendship and to bridge the gap between the Gorkha community by worshiping and praising God. The contest was of two categories solo singing (Karaoke) & solo Acoustic singing.

All together ten contestants from different churches took part in the event.

that it wouldn’t appeal to everyone.

“It was kind of our punk rock, heavy metal, progressive ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’, if you will,” he said.

“And there’s been people who’ve praised it as the greatest album that they’ve heard, and there’s been fans and people that, just truly, it’s over their heads and they don’t get it. And that’s what making music’s all about.

I can’t honestly say with a straight face that every Avenged Sevefold album is my favorite.

But I see the beauty in all of it. You always have to try new things, and that’s the one thing that we’ve learned from all the greats — every album isn’t gonna be every fan’s favorite, but as long as you keep switching it up and making new

According to Zacky, Avenged Sevefold has never paid much attention to its detractors, many of whom lambast the band for everything from “looking like Hot Topic catalog model rejects to “not really even being metal at all.”

“From Day One, we’ve always gotten backlash for certain outlandish ideas that we’ve had and presented,” Vengeance told The Salt Lake Tribune. “That’s also kind of been the driving force that’s pushed us forward. Ryan responds to possibility of ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Avengers’ crossover

yan Reynolds has addressed the possibility of a Deadpool/Avengers crossover film, describing it as a “great idea”.

The sequel to the 2016 superhero film is currently filming in Canada. Deadpool 2 is set for release next year and is directed by David Leitch – who previously helmed John Wick.

Speaking recently to Total Film, Reynolds was asked about his character Deadpool potentially crossing paths with the fellow Marvel superheroes.

While both are Marvel, The Avengers is produced by Marvel Cinematic Universe and Marvel Studios, while Deadpool is made by Fox. However, Fox and Marvel recently teamed up for Spiderman: Homecoming.

We have learnt from our mistakes. I rather not look back at the past but rather look forward and see the advantages that I have with the Shillong United.”

On his future plans of setting up NorthEast United FC women’s football team, Abraham said, “Yes very much. That’s something (women’s team) we got on our cards but our first plans right now is to get under 13. We will take one step at a time. Right now, we are not equipped to go so fast. But whatever we do, we will do it rightly.”

Special Olympics gets $1mn for Mission Inclusion

New Delhi, Aug 21 (IANS): Special Olympics Bharat has joined hands with the Lions Clubs International Foundation to launch a national partnership titled Mission Inclusion Bharat here, receiving a $1 million grant for an initial period of three years.

The Mission Inclusion service will support inclusive programmes for individuals with intellectual disabilities as part of a multilateral commitment to forge full social inclusion.

NEW DELHI, Aug 21 (PTI): The sports ministry has ordered an enquiry into reports that national campers at a Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Bengaluru were using a broken container for ice bath and also sought a report from the Sports Authority of India.

It has been reported that members of the junior Indian hockey team were using a broken plastic water tank for an ice bath at the centre.

“The ministry has ordered an enquiry.

After assuming charge as the sports minister during his visits to different SAI Centres in the country, Vijay Goel had emphasised the need to upgrade SAI Centres to provide the best facilities to the players practicing or getting trained at SAI Centres across India,” a sports ministry official said.

Shillong, Aug 21: Bollywood actor and Indian Super League (ISL) franchise NorthEast United Football Club (NEUFC) owner John Abraham Monday batted for home-grown players rather than signing international footballers.

“I honestly believe we need to create heroes in our own country,” said the actor while adding that “NorthEast United FC could be any other team tom-toming about big signings but that is not going to be our focus points. Our focus is to create our own heroes.”

“I would like at least 70 per cent of my players to come from north east.

I think it is very important for us to develop our own home-grown players and heroes,” he added.

Real beat Deportivo in La Liga opener

Pune, Aug 21 (IANS): Indian Super League (ISL) franchise FC Pune City on Monday secured the services of 2016 edition’s golden boot winner Marcelinho.

The Brazilian winger, who has plied his trade in Spain, Greece and Italy, represented Delhi Dynamos FC in the last season.

In his 15 appearances, the South American scored

10 goals and made five assists.

FC Pune City CEO Gaurav Modwel was excited about the new addition to his team. “Marcelinho has a great appetite for scoring and caused some serious damage to other teams’ defence in ISL last season,” he said in a release.

“He is a busy player on the pitch, always in the

thick of things - setting the pace, assisting and finding the back of the net.”

In his career spanning almost a decade, Marcelinho has represented Atletico Madrid B, Getafe B, Greek clubs like Skoda Xanthi F.C., Atromitos Athens, Kalamataamong among others.

Head coach Antonio Habas said: “Marcelinho is one of the most accomplished attackers we have seen in Indian Super League. He has the versatility to play on wings as well as in front of the net along with great pace to match his abilities.

Pacquiao, Horn set for title rematch Brisbane, Aug 21 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : B oxe r Manny Pacquiao will return to Brisbane this year for a Battle of Brisbane rematch with world title holder Jeff Horn, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has confirmed.

“Now this has been talked about for some time, negotiations have been happening,” Cr Quirk said.

“I have had a meeting earlier [on Monday] which has confirmed that Manny Pacquiao will definitely be in Brisbane this year for a rematch with Jeff Horn.”

The Lord Mayor said the opportunity for the rematch rested with the legendary Filipino boxer, who lost the last fight in July at Lang Park.

Ko h i m a , Au g 2 1 (NPN): A hat-trick from Longkhoi helped 6th placed United 16 FC thrash league leaders Khriekesa FC 6-0 on Monday to keep the Kohima Football League (KFL) title race alive.

Khriekesa FC never recovered from the goal deficit as United 16 FC fired four goals in the second half with Wanghe scoring a brace and Longkhoi scoring a hat-trick in 33 minutes time to complete the riot.

Wanghe scored the goals in the 47th minute and 61st minute while Longkhoi scored in the 57th, 85th, and 92nd minute to become the second hat-trick scorer of the league.

The best chance for Khriekesa FC came in the second half when Ruokuovolie hit the woodwork but there was no comeback as United 16 sealed the victory. Sloppy defense from Khriekesa FC side helped United 16 to score six goals in a match.

Dimitrov wins first Masters 1000 title

Cincinnati, Aug 21 (Agencies): Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov won his first Masters 1000 title by beating Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in straight sets in the Cincinnati Open final.

World number 11 Dimitrov, 26, broke once in each set to beat his 22-year-old opponent, ranked 23rd, 6-4 7-5. Kyrgios, also attempting to win his first Masters 1000 title, hit 31 unforced errors as he was outplayed.

Kyrgios was the youngest Cincinnati finalist since Novak Djokovic in 2009.

Brad Newley had his best game of the tournament to lead Australia, finishing with 18 points, Daniel Kickert had 14, whilst Mitch Creek had another game in double digits with 12 points.

Hamed Haddadi had 18 points to lead Iran, and was joined by Behnam Yakhchali as the only other player in double figures with 10.
