NPCC to contest all 60 seats in 2018; PM Modi slams Dera violence Rahul to kick-start campaign by Oct end
PATNA, AUG 27 (AGENCIES): From the platform of Lalu Prasad’s grand antiBJP rally in Patna today, Sharad Yadav today promised a pan-India Grand Alliance that would take on the BJP at the next general election. Sharad Yadav shared stage Sunday with Lalu Yadav, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav. The leader, who is staring at an expulsion from the JD(U) for defying orders to skip the rally, was greeted warmly by Lalu Yadav with an embrace on the dais. “Hindustan bhar mein Gathbandhan banega ab,” Sharad Yadav roared to applause from the large gathering at a rally here organised by RJD chief and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad. Without naming Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, who is also the JD(U) president, Sharad Yadav said, “I would like to remind those who broke the Grand Alliance in Bihar that now we will form the Grand Alliance at the national level.” He warned saying: “If politics and religion mix, it will create troubles like what happened in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.”
NEW DELHI, AUG 27 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed concern over happenings in Haryana in which 36 people were killed following conviction of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, saying violence in the name of any faith will not be tolerated and the guilty definitely punished. Everybody will have to bow before the law, he said. Addressing his monthly “Mann ki Baat” programme on All India Radio, Modi said: “I want to assure my countrymen that people who take law into their own hands and are on the path of violent suppression -- whether it is a person or a group -- neither this country nor any government will tolerate it. Each and every person will have to abide by the law; the law will fix accountability and the guilty will unquestionably be punished.” “We have been hearing and saying ‘Ahimsa Parmo Dharmah’ (non-violence is

Petrol price up by Rs 6/litre since July; diesel Rs 3.67
NEW DELHI, AUG 27 (AGENCIES): Petrol price has been hiked by Rs 6 per litre since the beginning of July and is now priced at its highest rate in three years with rates being revised in small dosages daily. Diesel price has increased by Rs 3.67 a litre, the highest in four months, according to data from state-owned oil companies. State-owned oil companies in June dumped the 15-year old practice of revising rates on 1st and 16th of every month and instead adopted a dynamic daily price revision to instantaneously reflect changes in cost. Prices of petrol and diesel have been revised at 0600 hrs everyday since June 16. Rates during the first fortnight dropped but have since July 3 been on the rise. “Previously, everybody felt the pinch when rates would go up by Rs 2 or 3 per litre in one go. Now they are being increased by 1 paisa to 15 paise a litre everyday, hikes that have largely gone unnoticed,” a senior oil company executive said.

supreme) since our childhood. In my address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, I had said that violence in the name of faith will not be tolerated, whether it is communal belief systems, whether it is subscribing to political ideologies, whether it is allegiance to a person or customs and traditions. No one has the right to take the law into one’s own hands in the name of one’s beliefs,” he said. He also called for a 15-day campaign ahead of Gandhi Jayanti to take message of “Cleanliness is service” to every home and said festivals should be transformed into symbols of cleanliness in the new India. He greeted people on festivals of Samvatsari Parva, Ganesh Chaturthi, Onam and Eid-ul-Zuha. Modi praised Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind for its con-
tribution in the Gujarat flood relief, particularly for cleaning 22 temples and two mosques after the flood waters receded. He said: “When on the one hand, a sense of festivity pervades the land, and on the other, news of violence comes in, from a part of the country, it is only natural of be concerned. Modi said the campaign for cleanliness launched by his government will mark its third anniversary on the October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, and positive results were being seen. Noting toilet coverage has increased from 39 percent of population to almost 67 percent and more than 2.3 lakh villages have declared themselves open defecation free, he called for “Swachchata Hi Sewa (Cleanliness is Service) campaign at least 15-20 days prior to Gandhi Jayanti. He also urged the nation to begin the campaign of “teach to transform, educate to empower and learn to lead” on the occasion of Teachers Day on September 5, while paying tribute to former President S. Radhakrishan whose birth day it is celebrated on. Referring to National
Sports Day on August 29, Modi said “sports should become part of our lives”, advising the younger generation that “playing field is more important than play station (video game).” “If we are a young nation, our youth should get manifested in the field sports as well. Sports means physical fitness, mental alertness and personality enhancement. What else does one need?” Cong attacks PM: Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s for his assertion that ‘violence in the name of faith would not be tolerated’ and ‘everyone will have to bow before the law’, the Congress on Sunday questioned why, even after such repeated statements by the head of the nation, such atrocities were not ending. “I don’t understand. Prime Minister Modi said that violence can’t be accepted at any cost. He had also said such things earlier also. But it has not stopped till now. I want to ask who is responsible for all this violence. Today what is happening in the name of faith of religion, the same thing happened earlier too and it’s been continuing for the last three years,” Congress leader Meem Afzal told ANI.
NPCC delegation with Rahul Gandhi and other AICC party functionaries in Delhi.
D I M A P U R , AU G 2 7 (NPN): After having met AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, vice president, Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders earlier this week in Delhi, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has finalised the “action strategies” to contest in all the 60 seats in the 2018 assembly elections. Informing this through a press note, NPCC media cell said that the party would carry out extensive campaign “to call upon the voters of the state to vote out the BJP-RSS and their comfort political parties.” NPCC also informed that the Congress vice president, Rahul Gandhi has agreed to to kick-start the assembly election campaign and address the party’s state level convention, proposed to be held by October end.
Former Finance minister and senior Congress leader, P Chidambaram will also attend the event, NPCC said. According to the media cell, the delegation led by NPCC president, K Therie held series of meeting to finalise strategies for the upcoming assembly elections due in February/March 2018. The delegation included-- vice president, V. Lasuh; general secretary, Jonathan Ao and media cell chairman, Capt. GK Zhimomi. The delegates also met Motilal Vora (AICC treasurer), Dr CP Joshi (general secretary AICC I/c NE states) and Dr. K. Jayakumar (secretary I/c Nagaland) to fine tune the action plan that incorporated the suggestions and directives of Congress president. The main objective of Congress would be
to provide clean governance with zero tolerance towards corruption. NPCC also reaffirmed its commitment “to defend freedom of faith, culture, customs, social practices and our land.” The party further vowed to protect Nagaland from being destroyed by communal forces in connivance with regional forces, saying “our ancestors were proud warriors and have paid with their life and blood to protect them”. NPCC reiterated that since Nagaland and its people were equal partners in the Union of India as provided in the Constitution, it would not allow the BJP-RSS to hold the Naga people and the state to ransom by taking advantage of regional parties who have no principles or ideology to withstand the onslaught of their communal and divisive agenda.
Don’t vote for any party that destroys citizens’ rights: ABAM appeals to all D I M A P U R , AU G 2 7 (NPN): Expressing deep concern over persecution of Christians across the country, the Ao Baptist Church Association (ABAM) appealed to all to send out a strong message to the government that if there was no intervention to look into the issue, the people would “not support the party that does not bother about the Christians”, be it in state or national elections. “If we were to restore our rights as citizens of India and freely exercise the freedom of religion as enshrined in the Constitution of India, let us not vote for any political party which discriminates Christians and destroy our citizens rights in the forth coming Nagaland Legislative Assembly election,” ABAM executive
secretary stated in a press release. ABAM noted that Nagaland, despite being a Christian dominated state, the practices of other religious faith had never been impeded nor compelled upon anyone to adopt Christian faith, saying “faith is based on one’s free will.” It further went on to point out that Nagaland had always been a democratic state, making it a place for everyone to enjoy one’s own rights. “As a Christian state, the dream of the people is to make the land a land of peace and prosperity where all the citizens and visitors alike enjoy the harmonious environment,” ABAM stated. ABAM said: “Christianity is all about love which overcomes all evil; it does
not teach division, hatred, violence and anything that pertains to human discomfort which makes Nagaland a special and safest place to live in.” Despite Nagaland being strictly accustomed with the ethnic traditions and cultures, ABAM said that the people faithfully adhered to the Constitution of India-where freedom of religion has been the beauty of the land. India being secular and the second most populous country on earth, with Christian making up just 2.3%, ABAM however lamented that the “so called democracy seemed to be disappearing into oblivion in the country with the present plight and snubs that the minority was experiencing.” (Cont’d on p-7)
India facing severe under-employment issue NEW DELHI, Aug 27 (PTI): Making a case for promoting highly productive and well-paid jobs, Niti Aayoghas said that not unemployment but a “severe underemployment” is the main problem facing the country. The government think-tank in its three-year action plan, released last week, has said that a focus on the domestic market through an import-substitution strategy would give rise to a group of relatively small firms behind a high wall of protection. “Contrary to some assertions that India’s growth has been ‘jobless’, the Employment Unemployment Surveys (EUS) of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) have consistently reported low and stable rates of unemployment over more than three decades. “Indeed, unemployment is the lesser of India’s problems. The more serious problem, instead, is severe underemployment,” the Aayog said in the Three-Year Action Agenda for 2017-18 to 2019-20. “What is needed is the creation of high-productivity, high-wage jobs,” it said further. Citing examples of top manufacturing countries like South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and China, it said, “The ‘Make in India’ campaign needs to succeed by manufacturing for global markets.” Noting that with Chinese wages ris-
ing due to an ageing workforce and many large-scale firms in labour-intensive sectors currently manufacturing in that country are looking for lower-wage locations, the Aayog said, “with its large workforce and competitive wages, India would be a natural home for these firms.” “Therefore, the time for adopting a manufactures- and exports-based strategy could not be more opportune,” it added. The Aayog in its ‘Three Year Action Agenda’ also recommended for the creation of a handful of Coastal Employment Zones (CEZ), which may attract multinational firms in labour-intensive sectors from China to India. “The presence of these firms will give rise to an ecosystem in which local small and medium firms will also be induced to become highly productive thereby multiplying the number of well-paid jobs,” it observed. Making a case for reforming labour laws, the Aayog also noted that recently fixed-term employment has been introduced in the textiles and apparel industry. “This option may be extended to all sectors. The change will encourage employers to rely on regular fixed-term employment instead of contract workers, especially when hiring workers for specific projects or for meeting seasonal demand,” it said.
