IT raids on K’taka minister rocks Parl

B E N GA L URU / N E W DELHI, AUG 2 (PTI): Income Tax sleuths today swooped down on 64 properties linked to Karnataka minister D K Shivakumar, who was overseeing the stay of 44 Congress MLAs from Gujarat at a resort near Bengaluru, setting off a political storm ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls. An I-T department official said that over Rs 10 crore cash was recovered during the raids in Karnataka and Delhi in connection with a case of alleged tax evasion involving Shivakumar, a senior Congress leader and the state Energy minister. A “good amount” of jewellery has also been recovered from a teacher’s locker in a college in Bengaluru, the official said, claiming the locker is in the name of a relative of Shivakumar. The searches had its echo in Parliament where protesting Congress members disrupted the proceedings and questioned its timing even as Finance Minister Arun Jaitley insisted that the action had no connection with the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls in Gujarat.

Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, is one of the candidates and is facing a tough battle. Polls for 10 Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh are due to be held on August 8. Patel accused the BJP of indulging in an “unprecedented witch-hunt” to win one Rajya Sabha seat. The I-T Department said the timing of the search was decided well in advance. About half-a-dozen note-counting machines have also been brought at two locations in Safdarjung Enclave in Delhi and in Hasan and Mysuru in Kar-

nataka to count the cash. While about Rs 7.9 crore cash has been recovered from Delhi, about Rs 2.23 crore has been found at locations in the southern state, the official said. Shivakumar, who was in-charge of the 44 MLAs lodged there to prevent the BJP from alleged efforts to “poach” them, was at the resort when the search took place, the official said. He was taken to his house in Bengaluru from the resort by the tax sleuths early today. The Congress legislators have been camping at the resort since Saturday last after the party flew them in here to fend off al-

Congress today approached the Election Commission asking it to ensure the safety and security of its MLAs from Gujarat, ahead of the August 8 Rajya Sabha election in the state. The party also alleged that its MLAs from Gujarat, who have found a safe haven in a Karnataka resort, were being terrorised and intimidated by the central security forces, used by the central government in garb of income tax investigations against Karnataka Minister D K Shivkumar. A delegation of Congress leaders comprising Kapil Sibal, Vivek Tankha, Rajiv Shukla, Manish Tewari, Randeep Surjewala and Madhu Goud met the Election Commission and sought its intervention in ensuring that no coercive steps were taken against its MLAs in order to “force” them to switch sides. This is the second time the Congress has approached the poll body in

as many days. A delegation of Congress leaders had met the EC yesterday against the use of NOTA in RS poll.

Cong disrupt parl

The Parliament was disrupted today by the Congress who protested vociferously against the raids. They forced three adjournments of the Rajya Sabha and staged a walkout from the Lok Sabha. Even as the Congress leaders said the government was using investigating agencies such as CBI, ED and IT, Finance Minister Jaitley clarified that “whether it is a use or abuse, it depends of recovery”. Jaitley maintained that the IT searches were being conducted at 39 other places, but “not at this resort”, adding that these “should not be linked to the Rajya Sabha election in Gujarat.” When the Rajya Sabha met after adjournment, Congress leader Anand Sharma raked up the issue again, saying an attempt was being made to “derail and hijack” the elections to the Council of States and the raids were “targeted”.

Rio suspended from NPF again D IMAPUR , AUG 2 (NPN): Former chief minister and current Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio, who was selected as the interim NPF president by 36 MLAs, has once again been suspended from the NPF for involving in “anti-party activities by way of associating with expelled and suspended NPF legislators,” an order issued by the NPF working presidents—Huskha Yepthomi and Apong Pongener stated. NPF maintained that Rio’s “action speaks volume of his anti-party activities, as he has been appointed as the so-called interim president of the NPF by the expelled and suspended NPF MLAs on July 31, 2017.” It may be recalled that Rio was suspended on May 17, 2016. However, NPF party in order to facilitate “true reconciliation” revoked the suspension order of Rio and 10 others on July 13, 2017. Despite revoking his suspension order, NPF alleged that Rio was directly involved in splitting the NPF legislators for furtherance of his hidden agenda. In this regard, the NPF ordered the suspension of Rio from both primary and active membership with immediate effect.

II bridge near Nagarjan over Dhansiri river. According to DIPR, the chief minister and his entourage comprising of several cabinet ministers, advisor and parliamentary secretaries were also accompanied by DC Dimapur and officials including Dimapur Police officers, R&B department officials and officials of Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority(NSDMA). The journalists wanted to interact with the CM on various issues rather than accompanying him to areas where floods had receded over two weeks back.

NPF Legislature Party rebuts NPF central

D IMAPUR , AUG 2 (NPN): NPF legislature party owing allegiance to chief minister T.R.Zeliang has hit out at the rejoinder issued by the NPF Central(owing allegiance to NPF President Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü). According to minster parliamentary affairs Tokheho Yepthomi it was not the legislators but party secretary general K.G.Kenye who called the meeting on February 15,2017 at 11 pm in the private residence of Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü. Tokheho said the Kenye also chaired the legislature party meeting and in his opening remark informed that on February 14 and 15, he had met chief minister T.R.Zeliang to seek his opinion about the demand of the JCC and NTAC for stepping down. Tokheho said that Kenye also informed that T.R.Zeliang had not revealed his decision. Tokheho said while this was going on Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsü purportedly got up and said “ I have protected Mr. T.R.Zeliang for the last three years and now he is tying to cut my legs ! I will not allow this” and walked out of the meeting witnessed by the 43 NPF MLAs, till he was persuaded back by some MLAs. Tokheho said that while deliberations were on and when majority of MLAs proposed for a joint meeting between Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü and T.R.Zeliang, to save the DAN government over the ULB issue, some felt that Dr. Shürhozelie take over the reins. At this point, Tokheho claimed that Dr. Shürhozelie announced “ since the situation compels, I am prepared to take over” after which Kenye asked those in support to raise hands followed by appending their signature(s). By 1 a.m. he said Dr. Shürhozelie asked all the MLAs to go to the CMO and convey their decision to T.R.Zeliang. Tokehho therefore asked whether it was MLAs who “begged beseeched, pleaded and almost sobbed (Cont’d on p-8)
