D I M A P U R , AU G 4 (NPN): Normally, a drive from Dimapur to Chumukedima takes around one hour during heavy traffic. Today, the same route takes almost three hours. The rise in number of vehicles plying the National Highway 29 (Dimapur to Chumumedima) has also shot up considerably. The Dhansiri river flowing from Assam, literally bisects Dimapur at Nagarjan (Kuda village)-Purana Bazar–Burma Camp and onwards to Karbi Anglong. At least not less than

five thousand vehicles that include several hundred heavy trucks (some bound for Kohima and Imphal) and around four thousand light vehicles and three wheelers ply over the bridges on both sides of Dimapur. Earlier, three bridges served as links between the portions of Dimapur- the Second World War iron girder bridge at Purana Bazar, the old British era RCC Bridge at Nagarjan (Kuda village) and the RCC bridge between Purana Bazar and Burma camp constructed sometime during the 80s. The bridge linking Purana Bazar and Wal-
ford was dismantled for constructing a new bridge sometime last year. Since then two bridges – bridge at Nagarjan and the RCC bridge at Purana BazarBurma Camp- took the load. However, after the heavy rains during June and July, the raging floods of Dhansiri river at Nagarjan caused the old bridge to develop cracks on the deck when one of the concrete piles sunk about 6 to 8 inches. According to eyewitness accounts, the concrete pile continues to sink . As of today, there is only one bridge connecting two portions of Dimapur
VP election today NEW DELHI, AUG 4 (AGENCIES): Former Union Minister, M Venkaiah Naidu is set to contest with former West Bengal Governor, Gopalkrishna Gandhi for the post of Vice President of India on Saturday. The polling will see MPs of both Houses gearing up at Parliament to cast their vote. The fight appears to be tilted towards NDA candidate Naidu, owing to the BJP’s majority in the Lok Sabha. If Naidu wins, he will become the second person with RSS background to occupy the second most important constitutional post. The Lok Sabha currently has 543 members and the Rajya Sabha 244. The Lok Sabha has two vacancies, while the Rajya Sabha has one vacancy. According to BJP, apart from NDA’s 81 Rajya Sabha members and 338 Lok Sabha members, members of both houses- of the AIADMK (50), YSR Congress (10) and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (14) will also vote in favour of Naidu. The BJP leaders are hopeful of crossing the mark of 500. Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi, a former West Bengal Governor and a diplomat, has support of the Congress, the Left parties, NCP, DMK, Trinamool Congress, BSP and National Conference. BJD and JD (United) which had supported NDA nominee RN Kovind for the post of president, have decided to back Gandhi.
at the Purana Bazar-Burma Camp site. The remaining bridge (Purana Bazar-Bur ma Camp) is carrying all the traffic that also included heavy laden trucks including medium and small vehicles of approximately five thousand vehicles each day. Though engineers have given a clean chit to the bridge, there are apprehensions that the capacity of the bridge is being over stretched. Those living nearby told this reporter that the ground shakes when vehicles ply over the bridge. They said the noise caused by the vibrations become
more pronounced at night. The other bridge( over bridge near Tragopan) has also developed some wear and tear and requires thorough inspection. This newspaper had carried a report about the condition of the overbridge sometime in 2015. This illustrates the ever increasing traffic in Dimapur and how the state authorities have failed to take stock of the ground realities. The heavy traffic along the roads of Dimapur is no longer confined to week ends but it is an everyday affair. Even on Sundays it is no longer off road for vehicles.

“distances are such that we need lot of investment in infrastructure. That’s one area that we are looking at, one of the takeaways,” Verma said. In his remarks, Japan’s ambassador to India Kenji Hiramatsu described Japan as “a natural partner for the development of the north-east region.” Act East strategy and historical and cultural linkages between India and the East Asia were two reasons for forging close ties with Japan. “The North East region is located at the strategically and the economically important juncture between Japan and South East Asia ...Therefore Japan-India have placed particular importance on the cooperation in north-east, which is clearly and repeatedly stated in the joint statements of our annual summit meetings,” Hiramatsu said.

DIMAPUR, AUG 4 (NPN): Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum (NPRAAF) has urged the Department of Power (DoP) to urgently address the power crisis in Nagaland, saying irregular power supply was discouraging growth of industries, effecting business especially the small scale industries besides causing hardship to students especially during exams. In a representation addressed to the engineer-inchief, department of power, the NPRAAF stated that if the power crisis was not addressed urgently, the woes of the people of Nagaland would be “agonizingly miserable in the days to come”. In this regard, the NPRAAF has placed several demands before the department for immediate addressal on top priority. The forum demanded that the chief engineers along with the department officials con-
duct monthly review meeting of all contractors and work progress of all projects. It stated that the contractors be pulled up in the event of incompetent work or non-execution of works. NPRAAF said that such exercise would compel the contractors and department officials to be more transparent. The forum also urged the department not to award contracts to the firms registered by serving engineers to execute contract works in the department. It said that disciplinary action should be initiated against those “unethical engineers”. Further, NPRAAF appealed to the department to “meticulously monitor” a firm, which it claimed has a questionable reputation and corrupt. The forum termed as “unfortunate” that the said firm had entered the department lately as contractors. NPRAAF said it would not hesitate to take
up the matter if the said firm caused loss to state. For uninterrupted power supply, the NPRAAF appealed to the department to put up a proposal before the central government seeking more high KV voltage electric power transmission lines with high tower and power station besides many more sub-stations under IPDS scheme or with NEC for the state of Nagaland. Stating that the power line between Dimapur and Kohima setup since 1960 was in the final stages of its life span, NPRAAF said if the power station broke down without alternative plan in hand, there could be total black in the two city centres of the state and would take a very long time to restore power. It, therefore, requested the department to put up a proposal of availing at least 220KV or more high power electric transmission line
with high tower to cater to the needs. The forum also suggested holding review meeting of the department to seriously discuss and analyse the power crisis and its infrastructural development. Pointing out that the power was equally important as road communication, the NPRAAF said the department officials were expected to be more sincere and dedicated for the betterment of the state. The forum cautioned that if department remained oblivious to its demands, it would not hesitate to take on the issues further. Meanwhile, NPRAAF said the E-in-C assured the forum that a meeting of top officials of the department would be called and the proposal submitted by NPRAAF would be examined seriously. The E-in-C also reportedly assured that any officer found involved in unethical business would be dealt as per service rules.
