State’s economy to contract by `1013.11 cr during 2020-21: Rio Correspondent

KOHIMA, AUG 5 (NPN): The leader of the house and chief minister Neiphiu Rio Thursday informed the assembly that the state’s economy was anticipated to register a negative growth of -5.59 percent (Advanced Estimate) during 2020-21, to the tune of Rs.1013.11 crore. Taking part in the discussion on matter of urgent public importance pertaining to post covid economic recovery, Rio, in his concluding remark, stated that COVID-19 pandemic had been highly disruptive and challenging and has impacted in many ways. Rio, however, said that one has to look beyond the COVID-19 pandemic to a future with high rates of sustained economic growth and better income levels for the citizens and continue moving forward with twin main focus – saving livelihoods and lives till the time the pandemic was left behind. During same period (i.e. 2020-21), Rio said the Indian economy was also estimated to register a nega-

The apex court, which asked the petitioners to serve the copies of the pleas to the Centre so that somebody from the government is present before it on August 10 to accept notice, also questioned why the matter has suddenly cropped up now when it had

tive growth rate of 7.3 %. In absolute terms, he said the contraction in the State economy was anticipated to the tune of Rs.1013.11 crore during 2020-21. Post the first wave of COVID-19, Rio said that a strategic committee for economic affairs for Nagaland headed by him has been constituted to revive the economy and to bring about self-sufficiency especially in the Agri and allied sectors and to provide livelihood options to the people adversely affected by the pandemic. Rio said that core group has been directed to work out strategies and action plan for strengthening the State’s economy. During the financial year 2020-21, Rio said that a proposal entitled “Road Map for Economic Development of Nagaland Post COVID lockdown” comprising 23 projects amounting to Rs. 8062.64 lakh was submitted to NEC. Out of these, he said NEC approved 12 projects worth Rs. 3117 lakh and sanctioned all the projects besides releasing a total of Rs. 764.00 lakh as first Instalment. He said the second

CAG detects excess/fraudulent drawals in various govt depts KOHIMA, AUG 5 (NPN): Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India in its report on General, Economic and Revenue sectors for the year ended March 31, 2019, presented during the 8th session of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, detected financial anomalies in various departments. Cases of excess/fraudulent drawals: In its report, the CAG pointed out excess drawal by inflating net total of pay bills where

four Drawing & Disbursing Officers (DDOs) of four departments had drawn funds of Rs. 153.25 lakh in 49 pay bills by irregularly inflating the net total amount where actual admissible amount was Rs. 135.57 lakh. This resulted in excess drawal of Rs. 17.68 lakh between the period December 2011 to August 2017. On being pointed out, the CAG report said that one DDO partially recovered Rs.0.40 lakh out of the actual excess funds of Rs. 4.55 lakh. It said that no replies were received (July

2020) from the remaining DDOs. On double drawal of pay and allowances including arrears, CAG observed that nine DDOs of four departments fraudulently drew funds of Rs. 100.61 lakh in 26 bills pertaining to the period January 2016 to February 2018 being pay & allowances and arrear bills which were already drawn in regular bills. This, resulted in fraudulent drawal of Rs.100.61 lakh. No replies were received (July 2020) from the all the DDOs.

Further, CAG observed that nine DDOs of six departments had drawn funds of Rs. 4872.30 lakh in 78 bills by inflating the basic pay of the employees whereas the actual admissible amount was Rs. 4680.09 lakh. This resulted in excess drawal of Rs. 192.21 lakh pertaining to the period January 2016 to February 2018. It said that two DDOs had submitted their replies (July 2020) while remaining seven DDOs have not responded. CAG also observed that 20 DDOs of 16 departments

wave of COVID-19 was also faced with the challenge of balancing the need of how to keep the economy going while at the same time shutting it down to protect the citizens from COVID. He, however, said a conscious effort has been made that as far as possible the economic activity should not suffer. Initiating the discussion on the last day of the eight session of the 13th NLA Thursday, the minister planning and coordination, land revenue and parliamentary affairs, Neiba Kronu, said that Covid-19 pandemic had a huge impact on the economy, adding that reviving the economy was, therefore, one of the top most priorities of the state government. Kronu urged all the members to offer suggestions that could be helpful in bringing back the lost economy. Agri minister, G Kaito Aye, informed that the state had a huge set back on agri and allied sector due to shortage of rainfall and for which the department had set up a core committee in order to tackle the issue on the rainfall shortage and post Covid-19 impact. both sides. Earlier, initiating the discussion on ‘Nagaland-Assam Border’ under matters of urgent public importance, senior NPF legislator Imkong L. Imchen reminded that Assam has border disputes with several north eastern states and it (Assam) was responsible for recent border clashes with Mizoram owing to Assam’s belligerence. Imchen suggested that chief minister Neiphiu Rio coordinate with all chief ministers of the north east having border disputes, to form a common platform and urge upon the prime minister to intervene in the face of aggressive policy of the Assam government. Imkong Imchen also suggested formation of a Cabinet Sub-Committee on border management do deal with and review all border

1985, 2014 and 2015. He said it has created unrest among people of both the States. He said that despite such conflict and turmoil, even the Supreme Court has not been able to finalise the boundary issue which he felt was due to the complexity of the matter. Giving a brief historical background of Nagaland Zeliang stated that there have been Agreements between Assam and Nagaland to solve boundary disputes but the problem continue to exist which he believes, is partly due to the fact that some clauses in the Agreements signed between the two Governments are biased and thereby, unreliable and have worked to the disadvantage of Nagaland to a large extent. Zeliang also highlighted on the Sundaram Report which was formed by the Centre under KVK Sundaram in 1971 to study the border dispute between Assam and Nagaland. He highlighted various instances where Assam took undue advantage over Naga(Cont’d on p-8) land.

Preparation for third wave started: Pangnyu DIMAPUR, AUG 5 (NPN): State Health (H&FW) minister S Pangnyu Phom Thursday making a statement on Covid-19 in the assembly said that the state has proceeded to prepare for the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Pangnyu said that the department would continue to work to cover entire population with vaccination, which was the most effective weapon against the virus. He informed that a paediatric task force has been set-up under a senior director of the H&FW with experts drawn from the private and public sector to look into preparedness. Phom said that the state government has identified infrastructural requirements

fraudulently drew funds of Rs. 140.84 lakh in 88 arrear bills during the period November 2016 to March 2018 on the basis of fictitious due and drawn statement and for those employees who were not entitled to draw arrears. CAG said that one DDO fully recovered Rs. 2.27 lakh and three DDOs partially recovered Rs.15.06 lakh and deposited into the government account. Out of 20 DDOs, no replies were received (July 2020) from the remaining 13 DDOs, it added. The CAG in its

recommendations said that the amount misappropriated should be recovered immediately from the concerned employees/DDOs/TOs. It also said that strict and exemplary disciplinary action should be initiated against erring officers responsible for the fraudulent drawals, so as to deter such occurrences. CAG suggested rigorous internal audit system to be put in place in at least large departments to prevent the frequency of the fraudulent/excess withdrawals. (Cont’d on p-5)

(NFHRCC) since 2013, Joel appealed to all the people of Nagaland to embrace this project as their own by emulating the example set by Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang, which donated Rs 36 lakh in 2020. Alleging that Naga MLAs were not serious regarding the project, he commented that if they were serious, the project could have been completed by now. If all the 60 MLAs had contributed even 10% of their yearly LADF towards the project, he said Rs 80-90 crore could have been easily collected in the last eight to nine years.

Delhi High Court dismisses plea to stop use of EVM D I M A P U R , AU G 5 (NPN): The Delhi High Court on August 3 last dismissed a PIL seeking direction to the Election Commission of India to stop the use of electronic voting machines (EVM) and revert to ballot papers in the forthcoming polls in the country. The petition was dismissed with costs of Rs. 10,000. A bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh said the petition by CR Jaya Sukin, a lawyer, was a PIL based on “hearsay and baseless allegations and averments.” The bench said the petition was filed without doing any research on the working of the EVMs and lacked material to justify the plea. The court said Sukin may file a fresh petition on the issue after conducting research and making proper averments. “The writ petition is dismissed with costs of Rs 10,000 to be deposited in four weeks towards Delhi State Legal Services Authority,” the court ordered. S H I L LO N G, AU G 5 : Meghalaya and Assam would be holding the second Chief Ministerial level talk on the inter-state boundary dispute on Friday in Guwahati. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will be accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister PrestoneTynsong , some cabinet ministers and top government officials. Friday’s meeting between Meghalaya and Assam is significant following the recent border skirmishes at Iongkhuli village after Assam police uprooted electric poles erected by Meghalaya

Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) in the village, which Assam claimed that the area falls under Assam’s territory. The first round of the Chief Ministerial level talks between Sangma and his Assam counterpart HimantaBiswaSarma was in Shillong on July 23, and resolved to move “beyond status quo to solution” in regard to the long pending boundary dispute between the two neighbouring states. Immediately after the first round of Chief Ministerial meeting, the Meghalaya government formed a state level committee on the dispute headed by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone-

cal outfit if it can give a constitutional solution to the demand for a separate Tipraland state. “We want Greater Tipraland. We are ready to hold talks with any political party – be it BJP, TMC, or CPI(M) – if they give us a constitutional solution to our demand. We want a written assurance so that we can show it to our Tiprasa people,” Debbarman, the TIPRA chairman, told reporters.

DIPHU, AUG 5 (PTI): A drug trafficker was shot at and critically injured in an encounter in KarbiAnglong district of Assam on Thursday when he allegedly tried to escape from police custody, an official said. The incident happened along the Assam-Nagaland border, he said. Acting on a tip-off, a team of policemen had on August 2 arrested two drug traffickers and seized heroin worth Rs 7 lakh and a vehicle from them. They were apprehended in an area under the Dhansiri Police Station limits of the district, the official said. The police had taken them to conduct search operations at Dimapur in Nagaland on the next day. One of the two drug traffickers tried to escape from custody when they were being taken again to the neighbouring state on Thursday for further operations. The police opened fire on him and he received bullet injuries on his leg, the official said, adding that the drug trafficker has been admitted to the Diphu Medical College and Hospital. A rising number of police encounters, which have seen several suspected insurgents and criminals being shot dead as they “tried to escape” from custody in the last three months, has whipped up a political furore in Assam. At least 30 arrested people have been injured and 15 others were killed during the period when they allegedly tried to run away from police custody. The opposition parties and a section of the civil society accused the police of indulging in ‘open killings’ since HimantaBiswaSarma of the BJP assumed charge as chief minister on May 10. Unfazed by criticism of his government over recent encounter killings, Sarma had said the state police has “full operational liberty” to fight against the criminals within the ambit of law.

have submitted their report to the State level Committee. The heads of these committees would also accompany the CM together with the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Deputy Commissioners and other senior officials for the second meeting at Guwahati. Meghalaya’s Leader of OppositionDr.MukulSangma has asserted that the upcoming Meghalaya-Assam talks on resolving the vexed boundary issue should be based on the documentations prepared by the State government on the 12 areas of difference which substantiate the claims that these places belong to Meghalaya.

Opposition MPs are planning to hold a symbolic protest at the site of farmers’ agitation at Jantar Mantar here on Friday morning to express solidarity with them, sources said on Thursday. Leaders of the opposition parties, which have virtually stalled all proceedings in both Houses of Parliament over the Pegasus controversy and the agitating farmers’ demand for repeal of three contentious farm laws, will meet on Friday to finalise details of their protest, the sources said. The meeting is likely to be attended Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The opposition leaders have held several closed-door meetings which set the tone for an anti-BJP front during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. “Opposition MPs are likely to hold a protest in the morning at Jantar Mantar. A decision on that will be taken at the meeting tomorrow. We all have said that while our first demand is for a discussion on Pegasus, our stand on the farm laws has never wavered,” said a senior opposition leader. The sources, however, indicated that respective leaders of opposition parties in the two Houses are unlikely to be part of the protest so as to not dilute their demand for a discussion on the Pegasus issue in Parliament, which remains their primary agenda.

employees and nine nonentitled employees. After the matter was pointed out, CAG said that two DDOs partially recovered Rs.4.68 lakh and deposited into the government account. It however said that no replies were received (July 2020) from remaining two DDOs. In the five cases, the DDOs concerned did not record the certificates on the arrear bills under his/ her dated signature after ensuring to the effect that (i) no part of the amount claimed in the bill had been drawn previously and (ii) a note of the arrear claim had been made in the office copy of the bill or the pay bill register for the period to which the claim pertains while drawing the arrear bills.

Similarly, it said that the treasury officers also did not obtain sufficient information as to the nature of every payment as per the bills presented to him/her for payment. “The blatant and widespread failure of the

Post-harvest technologies for cutting down losses in agri produce D I M A P U R , AU G 5 (NPN): Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI), which has made the socio-economic development of the North Eastern region one of its primary technology objectives, has developed post-harvest technologies for cutting down huge losses in agricultural produce. CSIR-CMERI Durgapur director prof. Harish Hirani, who gave an expert talk on post-harvest technologies and its potential to change the agro-economy of Nagaland and the North Eastern States in a virtual event organised by MSMEDI, Dimapur on August 5, 2021, said that the NorthEastern states had tremendous geographical advantages in terms of farming and agriculture. He said that there was abundance of harvest for cash crops in the northeastern states. Prof Hirani also said that the states have hidden exotic crop potential such as Tung, adding that Tung oil was currently being imported from China for therapeutic purposes. CSIR-CMERI director said that due to non-availability of suitable harvesting technology, export potential crops such as Tung (which is toxic in nature) was not

properly augmented. He also said that despite India being the largest producer of ginger, there was wastage of almost 45% owing to the lack of the processing technology. Prof Hirani said that skilling initiatives in the region to equip the farmers with the latest advancements in farm mechanization technologies was very poor. In the recent years, he said CSIR-CMERI has made the socio-economic development of the North Eastern region one of its primary technology objectives. In this regard, he said a three-pronged attitude has been adopted—increasing the shelf-life of the harvest, skill development of the farming community and reduction in manual handling of toxic crops. Prof. Hirani said CSIRCMERI was also encouraging the transfer of technology to MSME clusters, which could license the technology through a distributed-capital model. Also, par ticipating in the virtual programme, MSME-DI, Dimapur joint director, Tali Longchar, appreciated the sustainable socio-economic impact analysis and the innovative mindset of Prof. Hirani. He said that post-harvest intervention initiatives

of CSIR-CMERI had the potential to hugely improve the agro-economic scenario of the region by improving the income of the farmers. The programme was attended by representatives of numerous NGOs, National Tool Room and Training Centre, Dimapur and entrepreneurs of the region. CSIR-CMERI has developed the Ginger Processing Technology, which comprises of the Rotary Drum Washer with a capacity of 500 kg/hr and automated capability, slicing unit and the cabinet dryer with a capacity of 50 kg/batch and a batch-time of 4-5 hours with 85-90% moisture reduction capability. Another semiautomated ginger processing technology facilitates the automation of the process from washing unit to the slicer unit. The CSIR-CMERI developed bio-mass fuelled fish dryer and the hybridized fish dryer (i.e. Solar Powered/Bio-Mass Fuelled) has opened up avenues for the Fish Farmers of the region in terms of improving the shelf-life of the produce. CSIR-CMERI has also developed Technologies for creating briquettes from BioMass, either with or without binders. CSIR-CMERI has also developed three variants of Cold Storage Systems.

OPINION/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXI NO. 241 DIMAPUR, FRIDAY, AUGUST 6, 2021

Reality of a mirage

I

t was a history of sorts for the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) when the 13th Legislative Assembly convened for the 8th session on August 3 as an opposition-less house. Such a rare occasion had taken place on November 25, 2015 when the eight opposition Congress MLAs joined the NPFled DAN-III coalition government. At the first day’s session, discussion on the Naga political issue dominated the entire proceedings and expectedly so since the subject was cited as the blinker for an opposition-less government or house. According to the proponents of the opposition-less house/ government, this was meant to show the two Naga groups , how they can also ‘come together’ in order to secure one agreement, one solution. Whether the formation of an opposition-less government or assembly will inspire the two main stakeholders to also ‘come together’ is too early to say. The house during the discussion on August 3, witnessed shades of opinions as most members chose to tread carefully while giving their considered opinions and suggestions for the way forward. There were few who expressed concern over the negative impact on society due to continued stalemate. One member reminded that it was his 19th consecutive year as legislator and reminded the house not to take people for a ride over the issue. He said Naga people wanted solution. He said those who are negotiating must be clear on whether they are ready to sign an agreement based on what each signed in 2015 and 2017 with the government of India. He said if whichever group refused to sign the agreement for solution, then it should be willing to abrogate the cease fire. On August 3,2021 after going through the exercise of deliberation, the opposition-less house reaffirmed the resolution adopted by the Parliamentary Core Committee on Naga political issue on July 9. If the negotiating groups were to have come together for the aspirations of the people, then it could have been achieved during March 27 and 28,2014 in Dimapur at a joint meeting of leaders of both NSCN(I-M) and GPRN/NSCN and NNC/ FGN before formation of NNPGs in 2016 initiated by the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR). Leaders of both groups signed a pledge on the proposed formation of a Naga national government in the greater interest of the Nagas. The assembly is the highest public forum where crucial issues are discussed and solutions explored. Elected members are not involved in negotiations and neither are they even consulted as in the case with Mizo peace talks. However, being politically right has added to the blinker of confusion. One time, the state leaders say negotiations are ongoing and next they appeal to resume talks; while the Interlocutor said 22 years of negotiations have officially ended on October 31, 2019. Whatever happens in the assembly affects the people and their destinies. It is therefore, important that the highest forum of the people should have informed and enlightened debates and to live up to expectations and bring about changes that the state urgently needs for the present and the future generation.

DailyDevotion The Bewildering Call of God

“…and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished.”…But they understood none of these things… —Luke 18:31, 34 God called Jesus Christ to what seemed absolute disaster. And Jesus Christ called His disciples to see Him put to death, leading every one of them to the place where their hearts were broken. His life was an absolute failure from every standpoint except God’s. But what seemed to be failure from man’s standpoint was a triumph from God’s standpoint, because God’s purpose is never the same as man’s purpose. This bewildering call of God comes into our lives as well. The call of God can never be understood absolutely or explained externally; it is a call that can only be perceived and understood internally by our true inner-nature. The call of God is like the call of the sea— no one hears it except the person who has the nature of the sea in him. What God calls us to cannot be definitely stated, because His call is simply to be His friend to accomplish His own purposes. Our real test is in truly believing that God knows what He desires. The things that happen do not happen by chance— they happen entirely by the decree of God. God is sovereignly working out His own purposes. If we are in fellowship and oneness with God and recognize that He is taking us into His purposes, then we will no longer strive to find out what His purposes are. As we grow in the Christian life, it becomes simpler to us, because we are less inclined to say, “I wonder why God allowed this or that?” And we begin to see that the compelling purpose of God lies behind everything in life, and that God is divinely shaping us into oneness with that purpose. A Christian is someone who trusts in the knowledge and the wisdom of God, not in his own abilities. If we have a purpose of our own, it destroys the simplicity and the calm, relaxed pace which should be characteristic of the children of God.

Post-mortem

Don’t shy away: If you want to say something, say it now V

iolence, atrocities, exploitation and oppression in varied forms are happening within our homes and in society. The formats and modes though changing, the intensity and ferocity of pain inflicted keep rising. Further, conflicts of various kinds are on the surge. Disparities within religious communities; widening economic inequality; caste, class and gender divisions; religiocultural intolerance have reached the lowest ebb. Political and ideological extremities prevail leading to polarisation and fragmentation. As rational and thinking human beings we are supposed to think and reason out the ways with which we behave, interact and handle the problems we face. On the contrary, we have been witnessing atrocities and killings of human beings that brings to the fore brutality and irrationality. Killings, conflicts and destroying lives and properties have become the regular feature. Homo sapiens behave in senseless and brutal ways that makes many to wonder what makes them to respond in such horrible ways. Human nature is unpredictable – always fluctuating and inconsistent. What we see is the prevalence of animal spirit/instinct taking over the reasoning capacity. Acting sensibly

and prudently propelled by cognitive factor should be the main guiding factor, but in any given situations we behave in opposite ways. We do come across several episodes that makes us to wonder why do people behave in such ways? The reasons attributed could perhaps be either psychological or economic or religio-cultural or social or combination of some or many. Societies are constructed and functions on theories and schemas that represents the whims and fancies of the ruling classes and dominant castes. Inter-play of power and exercise of power that keeps the vulnerable and disadvantaged at bay. Human constructed divides and boundaries are being justified and reinforced by religion, tradition, culture and usages contribute to the perennial problems that the societies face vividly manifests in the forms of racism, casteism, patriarchy, capitalism, religious fanaticism, terrorism, anti-Semitism and fascism. The terrains we live is volatile and violent. In such settings there are many who think that why should we get involved as it does not concern us, while others are made to think that what they undergo is their fate or destiny and accept the problems they face as normal and nothing can be done. They rather put the blame on God saying only

God should intervene and change the situation. With this type of mind-set and mental conditioning they internalise whatever they confront and suffer within themselves and do not want to speak-out or act on it. They are concerned about their families, and not at all bothered what is happening outside their four walls of their homes. They are content and bothered only about their families. They are fully satisfied when the members of family live well and considers as “peaceful life”. They talk about inner peace, not knowing it is relational. The root word for peace means Shalom. In order to acquire peace in all wholeness, the most important pre-requisite is justice. Without realising justice, one cannot acquire peace, because peace is a relational concept. It simply means neighbours should live in peace, then only, we can live in peace. Their point of justification is how to derive selfsatisfaction. What do they mean? It means only “me and my family” should be well – in life with good education and lucrative jobs, enjoying quality life. These are the parameters that seem to be offering them “happiness” and “selfsatisfaction’. It is in this content, Osho, beautifully weaves the difference between “self-satisfaction” and “dissatisfaction” by nuancing “In the search

f o r l i f e, t h e r e i s n o greater danger than selfsatisfaction. Someone who is satisfied with himself is, in a sense, not alive at all. Only one who is dissatisfied with himself makes progress in the direction of truth. Remember that to be in a constant fight with self-satisfaction is to be religious.” Those who believe and derive “self-satisfaction” within the rubric of family and its welfare are not concerned about others and their welfare, and so, not at all disturbed or agitated to things happening outside and their life is like ‘living dead’ in Osho’s language. On the contrary, there are people striving to bring shalom alive in existential situations keep striving for justice, equality and freedom and some eventually pay the price for. Barring a few, many keep quiet as if it does not concern them or come to a conclusion that it is none of their business. Fur ther, it makes those who are concerned about others to wonder how could people keep aloof and not say anything against those happening that are inhumane and oppressive. How can they keep quiet by not raising their voices injustices? This is the reality we come across that people do not speak out or come forward to testify what they saw. The reasons offered: “for safety and security sake” or “family sake” or “future

sake”. Nonetheless, there are a few who take risks because they are dissatisfied with the things happening around them and thus plunge by pointing, questioning and setting the wrongs right. Fr. Stan Lourduswamy, worked for the welfare and development of the tribal communities in Jharkhand was arrested on different charges by the State kept in judicial custody and died. What crimes did he commit – raised difficult questions and involved in organising the tribal communities to speak for their rights. Edward Snowden, founder of Wikipedia, leaked highly classified infor mation from the National Security Agency in 2013, when h e wa s a n e m p l o ye e for CIA that contained information about American Government’s involvement. In May 2021, Belar usian war planes intercepted a passenger plane on its way to Moscow was forced to land in the capital disembarked a Belarusian activist who was critical of the authoritarian president. Back to India, a BJP minister in the Meghalaya g ove r n m e n t b y n a m e Sanbor Shullai said “I encourage the people to eat more beef than chicken, mutton or fish. By encouraging people to eat more beef, the perception that BJP will impose a ban on cow slaughter will be dispelled.” He added

that “everybody was free to eat whatever they want in a democratic country”. Shullai, who is the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister, assured that he would speak to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure that cattle transportation to Meghalaya was not affected by the new cow legislation in the neighbouring state.” People by and large go out for self-satisfaction and to get that they make all sorts of compromises. Self-satisfaction stems out of selfishness and self-aggrandizement that r evo l ve s a r o u n d “ m e and my family”. Osho emphasising on something we should consciously engage in annihilating “self-satisfaction” which is religious. In line with it, Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8: 31-32). And so, we ought not to be self-satisfied, rather we should become dissatisfied. We should never be silent to atrocities and injustices. Over and above, we should never shut our ears and mouths, and close our eyes, when lies and false narratives are taking over truth. If we don’t speak now, then we shall never be allowed to speak later, by then it will be too late! Dr. John Mohan Razu

This comes at a time when pandemic has increased the fortunes of India’s 100 billionaires by Rs 12.97 trillion. But Muslims (64%), Dalits (86%), Nomadic and Denotified Tribes (78%) have reported an increase in indebtedness and loans. ith reference to NPSC notification No. NPSC/ ADVT/EDS-2012 Dated 29 July 2021, whereby it is notified that the Common Educational Service Examination 2019 is to be conducted from 14 August 2021, we would like to bring to the attention of your esteemed authority, some points for your kind consideration. That Sir, in most of the districts, there is still a steady detection of positive cases of the Covid-19 whereby it becomes a problem for the aspiring candidates to come to Kohima for appearing the exam. Candidates from districts other than Kohima will have to search for accommodation either at relative’s homes or at various lodgings which is not advisable in the present scenario. In this regard, we feel that even though all possible SOPs are maintained in the examination halls, the candidates are still placed at high risk of contacting the virus when such arrangements are made. That Sir, many candidates and families are already infected and assuming the worst case scenario, if some candidates are detected to be Covid -19 positive, or under imposed isolation (as it is seen in our society) or under quarantine during the period when exam is scheduled, will it not rob those individuals of their chance to appear the exam? Of course, nothing can be done for personal tragedies, but

during these uncertain times of one of the worst pandemic in the history of mankind, if some consideration can be shown in the form of postponement of the aforementioned exam, it will be greatly appreciated. That Sir, even if we are able to appear the exam, precautionary measures like Self- isolation is not possible. Not all the candidates are young and single. Some of us are lactating mothers and it is a thing which is next to impossible to isolate ourselves for 14 days after the exam. Most of the candidate will be returning home to aged parents which is also a thing of concern. For many candidates who are on the verge of becoming overage, this exam may be the last opportunity before they are removed forever from the eligibility category to appear exams. There are reports of other exams being conducted, but such exams are to be run simultaneously with the rest of the country. Whereas, in our case, the benevolent decision of the commission can greatly benefit all the aspiring candidates as a whole. Every candidate, if eligible and applied for, has the right to appear the exam. We, therefor submit with humble supplication the above points for your benign consideration. Some concerned aspiring candidates (Wapang, Aien, Imli, Temsu, Akum, Atu & Lima)

Enforcing night curfew in toto Despite the state government laying down guidelines and standard operating procedures on COVID-19, many people still continue not wearing masks or maintaining distance. On top of this, people are seen roaming about freely in the night and some even stay up late partying. Such complacent and irresponsible attitude would not only get them into trouble but is also putting the lives in the community at stake, especially the elders and the little kids. The district administration and the police department must depute police personnel in all important junctions. They should be on duty to prevent gathering of people for any social activity. I can only imagine how the city markets would hustle and bustle and there would be increased footfall after the night curfew is lifted, which is why it should not be lifted even after this wave has died down. Many people are also found violating curfew norms as they are usually seen roaming outside the streets without any work. Therefore in the interest of all, the concerned authority should enforce the night curfew in toto. Vitoka Jimo, Dimapur reflect the view of this newspaper nor that of the Editor in any manner.

PM Modi slams Oppn for stalling Parliament 2 dead, 7 injured in MP rain mayhem

LUCKNOW/NEW DELHI, AUG 5 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the Opposition is trying to score self-goals, accusing it of stalling Parliament while the country was keen to march ahead. These parties are trying to stop the transaction of business in Parliament, he said in a no-holds-barred attack on the Opposition for stalling parliamentary proceedings over the Pegasus spyware controversy and other issues. “On one hand, our country is scoring goal after goal of victory, on the other, some people, due to political self-interests, are doing such things which make it seem that they are scoring ‘self-goals’,” the prime minister said. Modi was interacting with beneficiaries of the Centre’s food security scheme in Uttar Pradesh

through video-conferencing as the state observed the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana Day. “They are not concerned about what the country wants, what it is achieving or how it is changing. These people are hurting both the spirit and the time of the country for their selfish reasons. They are continuously insulting Parliament of India for their self interests,” he added. While very citizen of the country is working hard to get out of the biggest crisis humanity has ever faced, opposition parties are competing to stop the work of the country’s interests, Modi said. Targeting the Opposition, the prime minister said, “The great people of this country cannot become hostage to such selfish and antinational politics. No matter how much these people try

I have no problem if any other state receives higher number of vaccine doses, but I cannot remain a mute spectator to see Bengal deprived,” she said. The CM said the positivity rate of Covid has come down to 1.57 per cent due to the state’s sustained efforts.

months away. Before pedalling down the streets of the state capital, Yadav told mediapersons at the party headquarters that his party will win 400 seats in the next assembly elections. “I was saying that we will win 350 seats. But seeing the anger of people, I can say we can now win 400 seats,” the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said. Uttar Pradesh has 403 assembly seats. Flaying the BJP government in the state over management of the pandemic, he said, “I condole

death of all those who died during the second wave of Covid. The government did not help those who lost their family members. It could not arrange oxygen and medicines and left people to die”. Attacking the BJP for allegedly inducting criminals, Yadav said that as elections are nearing, the saffron party has put its ideology on the back-burner. “Party has not read its election manifesto (of 2017). Now it is concentrating on ‘money-festo’. The BJP has no work culture

KOLKATA, AUG 5 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing apprehension that the Covid situation might turn grim if the vaccine supply in the state is not augmented. She also alleged that the state is getting a “much lower number of doses” of vaccines despite having a very high population density, and urged him to ramp up the supply of vials.

LUCKNOW, AUG 5 (PTI): With an eye on the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday embarked on a ‘cycle yatra’ here to raise issues like price rise, unemployment, farm laws and crime rate. Though the “cycle yatra” at the tehsil-level in all districts marks the birth anniversary of veteran socialist leader Janeshwar Mishra, the purpose, political observers say, is to galvanise the SP ahead of the upcoming state Assembly elections, barely few

and could do nothing in the past over four years except renaming projects of previous SP regime,” he charged. The BJP has made Uttar Pradesh the number one state in terms of number of malnourished children, custodial deaths and disposing bodies in River Ganga, he charged. Taking a swipe at Yogi Adityanath, he said

that as the chief minister did not know how to operate a laptop, he did not distribute it to children. “He (CM) must not be knowing about DNA and its full form. You (media) persons can go and ask him,” he said when asked about laying the foundation of a forensic science institute in the state capital.

States and settle inter-state border disputes, Yanthan however said despite scientific tools, physical boundary demarcation can only be done on the ground after mutual agreement between the disputing parties. Those who also spoke included NPF member, YM. Yollow Konyak who suggested to the state government on having a proper land holding system in order to protect the interest of the people living in the border area. He also opined that Foothill road should be completed as that will help protect Nagaland and also enable Nagas to take up business and agricultural activities along the foothill road. Yollow suggested that the Government should have consultations with tribal Hohos and bring out a policy to settle the issue. Minister, higher education and tribal affairs, Temjen Imna Along said that the Nagaland-Assam border issue remained unsettled ever since Nagaland became the 16th State of India. He suggested upgradation of border magistrate to the level of DC and also insisted that the 13 IRB be deployed to area where recent incident had taken place. Along also welcomed establishing of village guards (VGs) to ensure security along the borders. NPF MLA, Moatoshi Longkumer said ever y interim agreement has been disadvantageous to Nagaland as Assam government never honored or implemented them but took advantage of state government’s silence or inaction. NPF legislator Amenba Yaden also shared his concern and suggested to appoint a border magistrate at the rank of DC and also suggested that neutral forces like BSF should be posted and not CRPF which can be manipulated. Advisor IT&C, Science & Technology and NRE, Mmhonlumo Kikon said Border disputes between Nagaland and Assam have been going for a long time . He lauded the matured step of the state government in signing agreement between the two states. He also suggested engaging the union home ministry positively, aggressively and effectively on the issue.

at the recent talks in Chümoukedmia between the chief secretaries of Assam and Nagaland, there were several pre-conditions set up Assam such as setting up watch tower under the pretext of protection of forest at Dessoi valley before withdrawal of police forces from the border. Rio said he raised the issue with Assam chief minister who then asked the Assam chief secretary to sign the withdrawal agreement on July 31,2021. On Nagaland Trans Highway (Foothill Road) Rio said the matter was taken up with the prime minister to declare it as a National highway. Rio said he also met MORTH minister who assured to take it up under Bharatmala Pariyojana though it was yet to be materialised. Rio however said whether funds are received from Bharatmala or not, the state will try to pool funds under SPA and turn the dream road into reality. Advisor border affairs and horticulture Mhathung Yanthan said claims of Nagas over lands now within Assa, was based on historical and traditional boundary . He gave a gist of the history and the sequence of events and the present status of Assam-Nagaland border issue. Yanthan said Assam claimed that the boundary with Nagaland is based on the 1925 Boundary Line Notification by terming it as “Constitutional Boundary”. He said Nagaland however reiterated its rightful claim over reserved forests (22 Reserved Forests) and Tea gardens (41 TEs) covering an approximate area of 13,000 Sq. Km . He said out of the 22 RFs, only 10 RFs are located along Assam-Nagaland boundary falls under Disputed Area Belt (DAB) covering an approx area of 1,484 Sq. Km, which constitute about 11% of the claimed area (from 13,000 sq. km). He said since formation of Nagaland, there has been frequent border disputes with Assam and that Assam has blatantly violated all Interim Agreements over the years. On the recent decision of the government of India, to engage NESAC Shillong for satellite imaging to demarcate boundaries of the NE

(From p-1) Zeliang stated that the imbroglio has to be resolved amicably outside the Court as total dependence on Supreme Court alone may not bring the matter to its logical conclusion. He also suggested that a Parliamentary Panel be constituted to study the border dispute issue and to submit its report within a stipulated time period. Leader of the house and chief minister Neiphiu Rio while responding to members over the issue, supported the stand taken by Zeliang and also reminded that as per past agreements with Assam, all neutral forces deployed along the AssamNagaland border were placed under the operational command of IGP Assam and therefore, Nagaland has to tread cautiously on the matter. Rio also recalled the controversial notification issued in 1925 by which huge tracts of lands were transferred to districts in Assam by the British without the consent of the Naga land owners. He said Assam took the case with the Supreme Court (in 1988) to legalise the notification which transferred 22 reserved forests and 41 tea estates to Assam. Rio also said the maps made without the knowledge of the Nagas, in the notification clearly stated at the footnote “ It was yet to be verified on the ground”. He also said the Union of India also held the view that it was not appropriate to demarcate the border based on the map prepared then by the Surveyor General of India in 1925. Rio also informed the house that as per agreements signed with Assam in 1972 (4 agreements), 1979 (two agreements) and 1985 (one) agreement; Nagaland had withdrawn 12 police post after 1972 agreement. However, he said Assam did not comply instead , has increased their police posts and in DAB and as per last assessment, Assam has 53 police stations identified at its border. Rio also mentioned that the Assam government during recent years has taken unilateral decisions against the status quo by giving Petroleum Mining Lease (PML) to ONGC and that exploration was going on in 27 disputed sites. The chief minister disclosed that

Delta variant reported in 135 countries: WHO SAYS GLOBAL CORONAVIRUS CASES COULD EXCEED 200 MILLION BY NEXT WEEK

U N I T E D NAT I O N S, AUG 5 (AGENCIES): The highly-transmissible Delta variant of COVID-19 has now been reported in 135 countries, according to the World Health Organization which said the cumulative number of coronavirus cases reported globally could exceed 200 million by next week. The COVID-19 Weekly Epidemiological Update dated August 3, released by WHO, said globally 132 countries have reported cases of the Beta variant and 81 countries of the Gamma variant. It said the cases of Alpha variant have been reported in 182 countries, territories or areas, while 135 countries have reported cases of the Delta variant, which was first identified in India. The global number of new cases has been increasing for more than a month, with over 4 million cases reported in the past week - July 26 to August 1, the

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

update said. “This increasing trend is largely attributed to substantial increases in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Pacific Regions which reported 37 per cent and 33 per cent increases respectively as compared to the previous week, while the South-East Asia Region reported a 9 per cent increase,” it said. Overall, the number of deaths reported this week decreased by 8 per cent as compared to the previ-

ous week, with over 64,000 deaths reported. However, the Western Pacific and Eastern Mediterranean Regions showed a sharp increase in new deaths as compared to the previous week, reporting 48 per cent and 31 per cent increases, respectively. The cumulative number of cases reported globally is now nearly 197 million and the number of cumulative deaths is 4.2 million. “If these trends continue, the cumulative number of cases

reported globally could exceed 200 million by next week,” the update said. At the country level, the highest numbers of new cases in the past week were reported by the United States (543,420 new cases; 9 per cent increase), India (283,923 new cases; 7 per cent increase), Indonesia (273,891 new cases; 5 per cent decrease), Brazil (247,830 new cases; 24 per cent decrease), and Iran (206,722 new cases; 27 per cent increase). The South-East Asia region reported a 9 per cent increase in new cases as compared to the previous week (over 841,000 cases), while the number of weekly deaths remained similar to the previous week (22,000 deaths). The highest numbers of new cases in the region were reported from India (283,923 new cases; 20.6 new cases per 100,000; 7 per cent increase), Indonesia (273,891 new cases; 100.1

new cases per 100,000; 5 per cent decrease), and Thailand (118,012 new cases; 169.1 new cases per 100,000; 26 per cent increase). Cases from India, Indonesia and Thailand accounted for 80 per cent of new cases being reported from the region. The highest numbers of new deaths were reported from Indonesia (12,444 new deaths; 4.5 new deaths per 100,000; 28 per cent increase), India (3,800 new deaths; less than one new death per 100,000; 45 per cent decrease), and Myanmar (2620 new deaths; 4.8 new deaths per 100,000; 24 per cent increase). Amid the g rowing cases of Delta variant and vaccine inequity, WHO called for a “moratorium” on booster shots of the COVID-19 vaccine until at least the end of September, noting with concern the disparity in vaccination levels in low and high-income countries.

Israeli def minister threatens Iran with military action

TEL AVIV, AUG 5 (AP): Israel’s defense minister war ned Thursday that his country is prepared to strike Iran, issuing the threat against the Islamic Republic after a fatal drone strike on a oil tanker at sea that his nation blamed on Tehran. The comments by Benny Gantz come as Israel meanwhile lobbies countries for action at the United Nations over last week’s attack on the oil tanker Mercer Street that killed two people. The tanker, struck off Oman in the Arabian Sea, is managed by a firm owned by an Israeli billionaire. The US and the United Kingdom similarly blamed Iran for the attack, but no country has offered evidence or intelligence to support their claims. Iran, which along with its regional militia allies has launched similar drone attacks, has

2 soldiers, 36 militants killed in Afghanistan KABUL, AUG 5 (IANS): Two Afghan soldiers and at least 36 Taliban militants were killed after the government forces repelled an attack on Thursday in the country’s eastern province of Nangarhar, a local official confirmed. The atatck erupted as hundreds of Taliban militants armed with guns and heavy weapons, including rocket propelled grenades, attacked Sherzad district while trying to capture the suburban district in the southeast of Nangarhar, provincial gover nment spokesman Attahullah Khogiani told Xinhua news agency. Four Afghan soldiers and 52 militants were also wounded during the fighting that had lasted for hours, he said. In neighbouring Laghman province, the militrary retook control of Badpakh district early on Thursday after the Afghan Special Forces launched a cleanup operation late Wednesday night, evicting the militants from the district, according to Fawad Aman, deputy spokesperson of the Defence Ministry. K Y M C

denied being involved. Speaking to the news website Ynet, Gantz responded to whether Israel was prepared to attack Iran with a blunt “yes.” “We are at a point where we need to take military action against Iran,” Gantz said. “The world needs to take action against Iran now.” Iran did not immediately respond to Gantz’s comments. However, in a letter Wednesday to the UN Security Council, its chargé d’affaires in New York described Israel as “the main source of instability and insecurity in the Middle East and beyond for more than seven decades.” “This regime has a long dark record in attacking commercial navigation and civilian ships,” Zahra Ershadi wrote. “In less than two years, this regime has attacked over 10 commercial vessels carrying oil and humanitarian goods destined to Syria.” Ershadi’s comments refer to an ongoing shadow war being waged on Mideast waterways since 2019 that has seen both Iranian and Western-linked ships attacked.

But The Financial Times reported on Tuesday that Yusuf complained about President Biden’s failure to contact Prime Minister Khan as Washington sought help to stop the Taliban taking over Afghanistan. “The cold shoulder from Washington comes as the Taliban has captured swaths of territory across Afghanistan in a ruthless offensive emboldened by the US pullout,” the report added. The British newspaper said that while Yusuf did not elaborate on his options, “Pakistan has cultivated deep ties with its ‘iron brother’ China, which has invested billions in infrastructure projects as part of its Belt and Road Initiative.”

longed bad patch. He could have also been Anderson’s third victim but was dropped in the slips, his only batting glitch on the day. The nine fours, mostly drives, were majestic and the control over his own mind while selecting the bad balls under overcast conditions was exemplary. But Anderson did take

the cake on the day the pacer with the highest number of Test matches under his belt (163rd game) equalled Anil Kumble’s record of 619 scalps. He matched Kumble’s record after fooling the Indian captain once again in the corridor of uncertainty. It was a fuller delivery that Kohli played for the inswinger but it held its line

to take a healthy edge into Jos Buttler’s gloves. Both Kohli and Anderson would have a sense of deja vu thinking about what happened in 2014. A ball before, the artist was at work as he got Pujara forward with one that was shaping into him in the air but deviated away when he pressed forward for Buttler

to take a low catch. The manner of dismissal is sure to increase the cobwebs in Pujara’s mind as this series is certainly going to have a bearing on his international future. The deliver y could have got any batter out but Pujara’s 16-ball, 17-minute brief stay did indicate that he is under tremendous pressure. He could have been dismissed earlier by Ollie Robinson (15-5-32-1) when he shouldered arms to a straight delivery but the height factor came to his rescue. However, Indian team had one of its best opening stands in recent tours of England before Rohit Sharma’s (36 off 107 balls) now familiar propensity to pull brought about his downfall at the stroke of lunch. The opening duo did well enough to keep the four-pronged home team attack at bay but Rohit’s attempt to dispatch Robinson’s short ball behind the square leg boundary didn’t quite work out as he threw it away after doing all the hard work.

Race walk: Sandeep finishes 23rd; Irfan, Rahul 47th, 51st

S A P P O RO ( JA PA N ) , AUG 5 (PTI): National record holder Sandeep Kumar was going strong at second position till near the halfway mark but he faded later on to finish 23rd with a below-par timing in the men’s 20km race walk event in the Olympics here on Thursday. The 35-year-old Kumar crossed the finish line in 1 hour 25 minute and 7 seconds, well outside his national record time of 1:20:16 which he had clocked in February to qualify for the Olympics during the National Open Race Walk Championships in Ranchi. His two other compatriots, Rahul Rohilla (1:32:06) and K T Irfan (1:34:41) brought up the rear at 47th and 51st with disappointing performances under hot and humid conditions. Fifty seven athletes started in the competition

and 52 finished their races. Five were either disqualified or DNF (Did Not Finish). Italian Massimo Stano won gold in 1:21:05, while the Japanese pair of Ikeda Koki (1:21:28) and Yamanishi Toshikazu (1:21:46) took the silver and bronze respectively. Kumar, who shifted from 50km race walk to 20km event as it will no longer be an Olympic event from the next edition, was

hot on the heels of 2018 Asian Games gold medallist Kaihua Wang of China till the 8km mark as the duo took initial lead. But slowly Kumar dropped back to be with the chasing pack. He also got his second warning around that time. Kumar had taken part in 50km race walk in 2016 Olympics -- where he finished 35th -- but the event will no longer feature in

TOKYO, AUG 5 (IANS): World record holder Ryan Crouser of the United States claimed the men’s shot-put title at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. Crouser took the lead all the way, and threw 23.30 metres in his sixth attempt, refreshing the Olympic record. Ryan Crouser Crouser’s compatriot Joe Kovacs bagged the Holloway took silver silver with 22.65m, while with 13.09 and Ronald Tomas Walsh of New Levy of Jamaica won Zealand took bronze with bronze with 13.10. 22.47 metres. Pedro Pichardo of Portugal took an outright victory in men’s triple jump while China took a historical silver on Thursday. Pichardo only succeeded in his first three attempts -- 17.61 metres in the first two and 17.98 in the third attempt -- but it was enough to secure the gold medal. China improved from the bronze medal in Rio 2016 as Zhu Yaming took silver with a personal best of 17.57 metres, the best result for China at the Olympic Games. Hugues Fabrice Zango won bronze, the firstever Olympic medal for Burkina Faso. Ja m a i c a n h u r d l e r Hansle Parchment took a surprising victory in the men’s 110m hurdles final on Thursday. the Games as it is tough for women to compete in it and gender parity has become the norm in global competitions. For the 31-year-old Irfan, it has been a downward journey in the last few years. He also competed in the 2012 London Olympics where he finished a creditable 10th with a time of 1:20:21 (then national record). He was the first track and field athlete to qualify for the Olympics way back in March 2019 but he was one of the two athletes on the verge of being left out of the Tokyo Olympics team on account of dip in form. His performance during a fitness trial on July 9 was below par but the AFI cleared him, along with long jumper M Sreeshankar, on the ground that it was not a performance trial. His last competition

before Thursday’s event was during the National Race Walking Championships in March, where he did not finish the race. He had contracted COVID-19 in May and has recovered since then.

TOKYO, AUG 5 (AGENCIES): The United States women’s team won the Olympics bronze medal with Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd scoring two goals each in a 4-3 win over Australia in Kashima on Thursday. The Americans, World Cup winners in 2019, had gone into the Tokyo Games as heavy favourites for gold but after some underwhelming displays were beaten by Canada in the semi-finals. For spells against the Australians, seeking their first medal in the sport, the old swagger of the U.S. team

was back with two of their veterans, in what could well be their final appearance in a major tournament, offering a reminder of their quality. Rapinoe fired the U.S. ahead in the eighth minute direct from a corner which Aussie keeper Teagan Micah flapped at. Sam Kerr levelled for Australia in the 17th minute, her 48th goal for the Matildas making her their all-time top scorer. Rapinoe restored the Americans’ advantage with a fine volley after a woeful attempted clearance from Alanna Kennedy looped across the box

to the grateful forward. The 39-year-old Lloyd produced a clinical finish to make it 3-1 just before the break, collecting a pass from Lindsey Horan and burying it, first time, into the far corner. Another defensive error from Kennedy, this time a weak head back towards her keeper, gifted Lloyd her second which she slipped between Micah’s legs to make it 4-1 in the 51st minute. 3 minutes later though, a Caitlin Foord header from a Kyah Simon cross brought Australia back into the match and Kerr then hit the post with a fine, glancing header.

NOTTINGHAM, AUG 4 (PTI): The wily old James Anderson once again got his “bunny” Virat Kohli in a mesmerising spell that undid India’s solid opening stand to leave them tottering at 125 for four against England on a rain-curtailed day two of the opening Test. The 39-year-old Anderson (13.4-7-15-2) swung it in England’s favour with successive precision deliveries that got CheteshwarPujara (4) and Virat Kohli (0) as India from 97 for no loss slumped to 112 for four in a space of less than six overs. The in-from KL Rahul (57 batting off 151 balls) is still standing tall amid ruins alongside Rishabh Pant (7 batting) but the advantage that India got in the opening session was neutralised by Anderson’s spell and the pressure also led to an unfortunate run-out of Ajinkya Rahane (5). Men’s hockey: India win bronze medal after 41 years

TOKYO, AUG 5 (IANS): India fought back brilliantly from a two-goal deficit to beat Germany 5-4 in a high-intensity goal-fest to win bronze, the country’s first medal in men’s hockey at the Olympics after a gap of 41 years. It was a dream come true for billions of hockey fans as India came back from 1-3 down to score an impressive 5-4 win that reminded its fans of the glory days when the Indians were a force to reckon with in world hockey. Simranjeet Singh (17th, 34th) scored a brace of goals while Hardik Singh (27th min), Harmanpreet Singh (29th min) and Rupinderpal Singh (31st min) scored a goal apiece for India while for Germany Timur Cruz (2nd min), Niklas Wellen (24th min), Benedict Furk (25th min) and Lukas Windfeder (48th min) were on target. India unleashed a four-goal blitz in four minutes as they came roaring

back after being pinned down 1-3 by the Germans who started aggressively and created good pressure by going full press from the start itself. But the Indians took control of the midfield, capitalised on the gaps created by the hard-pressing Germans, and counterattacked brilliantly, cutting the German defence to shreds in that four-minute

period that left the opponents shocked. Till that time, it looked like Tobias Hauke’s side had taken control of the match as they opened the scoring in the second minute of their first attack and then scored twice within a minute as they took control of the proceedings with a 3-1 lead. But the Indians were not done yet, they scored

two goals of their own in the 27th and 29th minute through Hardik and Harmanpreet Singh, the latter powering a brilliant drag-flick into the German goal, capitalising on swift counter-attacks. The score was 3-3 at half-time and both teams had a lot to play for. The Indians continued with the momentum in the third quarter and a

minute after the restart, earned a penalty stroke when Mandeep Singh was brought down by Oruz in the shooting circle. Rupinderpal Singh’s push had too much power for German goalkeeper Alexander Stadler, who guessed the direction but could not get down fast enough to stop it. And India made things more difficult for Germany when Simranjeet Singh was on target again in the 34th minute after he was set up by Gurjant Singh, who made a good run to the goal-line and sent a minus ball inside the circle. Earlier, India made a slow start and were down a goal within two minutes as Germany went ahead when Timur Oruz shot home an opportunistic field goal. Florian Fusch made a run on the left flank and sent a ball into the shooting circle for Oruz to deflect it through Sreejesh’s legs to make it 1-0. India responded immediately and made it 1-1

when Simranjeet Singh, who came in after Lalit Upadhyay was left out of the 16-man squad by coach Graham Reid, capitalised on some great work by Hardik Singh who stole the ball. Hardik gave it to Nilakanta Sharma, who set up Simranjeet with a superb long pass down the centre of the shooting circle. But Germany scored two goals in quick succession, capitalising on defensive errors by the Indians to make it 3-1. They struck twice within two minutes, Wellen made it 2-1 when Hardik lost the ball near the shooting circle and a minute later Furk was on target when Indian defender Surinder Kumar delayed in clearing the ball and was dispossessed by a German forward (3-1 for Germany). But the lead was shortlived as India responded immediately and launched a blitzkrieg of attacks that sealed the victory eventually.

Wrestling: Silver for Ravi, heartbreak for Punia, Vinesh China’s 14-yr-old diver Quan CHIBA (JAPAN), AUG 5 (PTI): Ravi Dahiya on Thursday became only the second Indian wrestler to win a silver medal at the Olympic Games but Vinesh Phogat’s redemption dream came crashing down after a shock quarterfinal exit and Deepak Punia let slip a bronze in the last 10 seconds of his play-off bout here on Thursday. There were huge expectations from Dahiya for a gold medal after his phenomenal semifinal victory but the reigning world champion Zavur Uguev of Russian Olympic Committee dashed those hopes with a comfortable 7-4 win the men’s freestyle 57kg title clash. Dahiya had lost to Uguev at the 2019 World Championship also. Sushil Kumar, who is now in jail on charges of a murder, is the only other Indian wrestler to have made the final at Olympics. Dahiya tried every possible trick in his bag but Uguev defended extremely well and kept consolidating his lead with his timely point-scoring moves. Looking at a bigger

picture, Dahiya’s silver medal will further inspire the young generation but star Indian wrestler Vinesh was left to endure a second consecutive heart-breaking quarterfinal exit from the Olympic Games after a massive upset defeat at the hands of Belarus’ Vanesa Kaladzinskaya. Vinesh had no answer to the supreme defence of Vanesa, who got her revenge from the Indian at the biggest stage after suf-

fering a similar embarrassing defeat ‘by fall’ earlier this year in Ukraine. Later, Vanesa lost her semi-final to China’s Qinyu Pang on criteria after scores were tied 2-2, a result that brought curtains on Vinesh’s campaign at the Tokyo Games. The top-seeded Vinesh, who was a hot favourite for a medal, needed Vanesa to beat the Chinese to rejoin the 53kg competition through the repe-

chage round and push for a bronze. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Vinesh had suffered a quarterfinal defeat against China’s Sun Yanan after enduring a leg injury and was stretchered out of the mat. In the men’s freestyle 86kg category, Deepak Punia came agonisingly close to winning a bronze medal on his Olympic debut but conceded a take-down in last 10 seconds of the playoff against San Marino’s Myles Nazem Amine to miss out on achieving the feat. Deepak’s defence was superb throughout the bout but the San Marino wrestler grabbed the decisive two-pointer after getting hold of the Indian’s right leg and converted it into a take-down in dying moments of the bout. The 22-year-old Indian, son of a milk peddler in a Haryana village, was leading 2-1 before that take-down but it was not meant to be his day. Deepak made good use of a favourable draw to reach the semifinals but lost to the formidable American David Morris Taylor.

She finished on 466.20, well ahead of Chen’s 425.40 while Australia’s Melissa Wu, 29, was third on 371.40. On her Olympic debut, Britain’s Andrea SpendoliniSirieix was seventh with Lois Toulson ninth.

Quan’s gold means China have now won all four women’s diving events at the Tokyo Games. Quan and Chen had identical scores after the first round of dives but Quan went ahead in round two after she was awarded a perfect-10 score from all seven judges. She got a second set of 10s in round four and in the final round, six judges gave her 10 and one 9.5. It is Wu’s first individual medal after she won synchro gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 when Quan was just 18 months old.

Belgium claim first hockey gold after shootout win

Belgium’s Victor Nicky B Wegnez cries during the playing of their national anthem after winning the men’s hockey.

TOKYO, AUG 5 (AGENCIES): Belgium won their first Olympic men’s hockey title, beating Australia 3-2 in a penalty shootout after the final finished in a 1-1 draw on Thursday. The sides were locked in a close fight through much of the match, with Belgium forward Florent van Aubel giving the Red Lions the lead two minutes into the second half. Australia equalised thanks to a goal by Tom Wickham, sending the match to the shootout, in which Belgian goalie Vincent Vanasch saved three attempts from the Kookaburras, including a

retake from Jake Whetton following a video referral. But Vanasch saved Whetton’s second try, winning Belgium the title. “We were really focused and then I did the job at the end,” Vanasch told reporters. “I’m really happy. I think all of the Belgian people are proud today of the Belgium national team.” Australia, who won the silver medal, claimed their last Olympic title in 2004. “It’s a tough way to lose the gold medal,” Australia’s goalie Andrew Charter said.
