DIMAPUR, AUG 5 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president, K Therie, on Saturday maintained that the future of Naga People’s Front (NPF) was no more in Nagaland, saying the party has been reduced to “a fragmented, divided party fighting for their own interests and not for the public.” Speaking at the general meeting of 16-Pfütsero Assembly Constituency Congress Committee (ACCC) at Pfütsero town hall, Therie recalled NPF’s assertion that BJP was its natural ally but wondered why NPF changed its stand after Dr. Shürhozelie was ousted. He said that all 60 MLAs have forgotten the public and were fighting for portfolios and that public also dare not question them since they themselves involved in corrupt practices during election. He said there was no guarantee whether the 60 MLAs would return in the next general election but stressed that those who endorsed RSS ideology should be defeated. Therie also said that the NPF government was in fear of BJP because of corruption of its leaders. (Cont’d on p-7)

DIMAPUR, AUG 5 (NPN): Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has sought clear clarification from the Youth Resources & Sports (YR&S) department and the state government with regard to the departmental examination for the post of storekeeper and LDA-cum-computer assistant under YR&S department. In a representation addressed to director YR&S, ENSF vice-president, Hamnyei Angh, and asst. general secretary, Kumcho Yimchunger, urged the department not to declare the result until clarification was justified. Alleging that the department was not adhering to 25% job reservation policy of the state government for the eastern Nagas viz Chang, Konyak, Phom, Sangtam, Khiamniungan and Yimchunger, the federation demanded that the department implement 25% job reservation or cancel the result and re-advertise the same “if there is any anomalies or manipulation in filling up the posts.” ENSF cautioned that failure to get positive response from the department would compel the federation to take its own course of action. The federation also stated that it would under any circumstances fight for justice that had been denied.
Flood-hit NE at risk of malaria, JE New Delhi, Aug 5 (Agencies): Tens of thousands of flood survivors in the North Eastern states particularly Assam and Manipur are at risk of contracting diseases such as malaria and Japanese encephalitis, as water levels begin to recede leaving behind conditions ripe for mosquito-breeding, the Red Cross has warned. More than 100 people have died in northeastern parts of India and tens of thousands have been displaced by the floods which have submerged villages, washed away vast tracts of farmland and destroyed roads and bridges. But the Red Cross said the spread of water- and vector- borne diseases was a concern as water levels begin to fall in some parts of Assam and Manipur states, and people in government relief camps return to their homes in low-lying areas.
“Ongoing heavy rain and a third wave of flooding continues to submerge villages in both states and bring misery and desperation,” said Vijay Kumar Ummidi from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in India. “But in some districts, floodwaters are starting to recede, exposing damaged toilets, contaminated water sources and standing water that is certain to attract more mosquitoes,” he said in a statement late on Thursday. Red Cross workers added that they were already recording an increase in diseases in Manipur state which borders Myanmar. “We are already seeing a rise in cases of malaria, Japanese encephalitis and other vector-borne diseases, as well as infections from unsafe drinking, cooking and bathing water,” said Amul Kumar from the Indian Red Cross in Manipur. Monsoon
rains from June to September are vital for its agriculture, which makes up 18% of its GDP and provides employment for almost half its 1.3 billion population. But in many states, the rains frequently cause rivers such as the Brahmaputra and their tributaries to overflow and flooding forces millions into temporary camps, destroys homes and exposes people to diseases such as malaria and diarrhoea. Red Cross said people required basic aid ranging from tarpaulins and soap to kitchen utensils as well as temporary toilets, water treatment and storage systems, disinfectants and mosquito nets. “The needs are enormous, so we are focusing on the health and wellbeing of the poorest of the poor, those who have lost everything, and single moms, the elderly and other vulnerable people who are truly struggling to get by,” said Ummidi.
