KAAC halts sand supply to Dimapur Correspondent

DIPHU, AUG 7: Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has ordered suspension of river bed mining and halted all movement and transportation of sand carrying trucks to Dimapur with effect from August 6. In an official order, KAAC principal secretary said river bed mining during monsoon season has resulted in large scale erosion in the river banks and caused damage to the rural roads. When contacted, association president Kang Jang Terang told this correspondent “We have agreed with the decision of the authority”. He also opined that regular movement of trucks was not advisable during COVID-19 pandemic.

the country under the Vande Bharat Mission, meant to bring home stranded people from other countries amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Regular commercial flights have been halted in India because of the coronavirus outbreak. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who expressed his pain at the tragic accident, picked up the phone to speak to Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. “My thoughts are with those

who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to Kerala CM @vijayanpinarayi Ji regarding the situation. Authorities are at the spot, providing all assistance to the affected,” he said. Four hours after the crash, Kerala police officers said two people were still trapped and the operation to pull them out was still on. Officials said the runway- like the one in Mangalore- is on a hilltop with

gorges on either side that increases chances of casualties if the plane overshoots the runway. “It was raining heavily. The pilot had given a warning before landing saying the weather was really bad. He tried for safe landing twice but lost control. The aircraft shot off the runway and skidded off and it was broke into two pieces. It was a miraculous escape for many,” said a passenger V Ibrahim.

Another source informed that a five -member delegation had left for Delhi via Guwahati on Thursday. Earlier, the formal meeting between R.N. Ravi and NSCN (I-M) leaders, which was scheduled to be held in July 17, was postponed due to health issues of NSCN (I-M) ato kilonser and chief negotiator, Th. Muivah. Later, on July 20, Muivah flew to Delhi by a chartered flight for treatment, accompanied by his wife and others. Meanwhile, when asked about reports that R.N. Ravi was likely to be replaced by a new interlocutor, a senior official, on condition of anonymity, said that there was no such move to replace Ravi at this juncture.

D I M A P U R , AU G 7 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has appealed to Government of India (GoI) to make genuine efforts and show political will to resolve the world’s “oldest political issue”. NSF president Ninoto Awomi and vice president Dievi Yano further appealed to Centre’s interlocutor and governor RN Ravi to take the peace talks ahead with all seriousness, sincerity and empathy based on Nagas’ “unique history”. The signatories also expressed the hope that there would be a logical conclusion that would meet the aspirations of Naga youth for a permanent peace in all Naga-inhabited areas and thereby improving the quality of life. NSF also stressed that early accord should usher in good governance, accountability and sustainable development. The federation has also expressed its “displea-

sure over the continued division” among the Nagas even at this crucial juncture of peace talks. It however appreciated the milestone reached by government of India , NSCN (I-M) and NNPGs in showing extraordinary statesmanship, political acumen and patience to conclude the formal talks on October 31, 2019 for an inclusive solution covering all Naga-inhabited areas. NSF however cautioned that despite progress of talks, any short-sighted propaganda with no vision could lead to confusion and conflict in Naga areas. NSF also appealed to the Naga political groups to lay out clearly post-accord arrangement, governance model and ideology clearly agreed upon and accepted by government of India. Before inking the final agreement, NSF called for deliberation with transparency on what was best for the Naga society in the pres-

ent political context. NSF reminded that the Naga political struggle was a people’s movement, and so the sentiment of the entire Naga people in general was that they wanted to have a say. Hence the NSF called for disclosure of the agreed points and deliberate on points that are acceptable to the public and for closely reviewing issues obstructing the early signing of permanent peace in the region. NSF maintained that Nagas have suffered enough for standing up for their unique history and pursuing their common goal and that it stood committed to uphold the Naga identity till sovereignty and integration was achieved. NSF also reaffirmed that “artificial boundaries and circumstances created in the past” would not dissuade it from asserting the legitimate rights of Naga people for all times to come.
