soon after EC’s verdict came out in favour of Congress. Earlier, the BJP and Congress traded charges after counting of votes in the Gujarat Rajya Sabha polls got delayed, with the latter demanding cancellation of votes of its two MLAs for alleged violation of rules and the saffron party insisting that counting be taken up immediately. Congress was the first to move the Election Commission demanding cancellation of votes of its two disgruntled MLAs for allegedly showing their votes to persons other than the authorised party representatives. Congress leaders Randeep Surjewala and RPN Singh also produced a video of
the poll proceedings to the commission and demanded that votes of Gohil and Raghavjibhai be cancelled as per law since they violated the “secrecy of ballot”. According to the rules, voters for the Rajya Sabha elections have to show their ballots to authorised representative of their respective parties before casting them. Terming Congress’ objections as “baseless”, a delegation of BJP leaders, including Union ministers Arun Jaitley, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Piyush Goyal, approached the EC demanding immediate counting of votes, contending that validity of votes once put in ballot boxes cannot be questioned. NTC reaffirms inclusive Naga political settlement DIMAPUR, AUG 8 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) through its media cell has reaffirmed that the council, in the interest of the Nagas, has been harping on inclusive political settlement, while understanding what political solution can bring sustainable peace and what can bring disaster to the Naga society. “When when we talk about solution, our division becomes the primary obstruction to such settlement,” NTC said. It however maintained that the magnanimity of six NNPGs, coming together to form a common platform—the Working Group (WG), has virtually mitigated gaps of divisions. This has given a ray of hope that “we, the Nagas, are not only capable of dividing ourselves but we are squarely able to come into unity too.” In this regard, NTC expressed gratitude to the six NNPGs for having reposed their faith in the mediation so initiated. On the strength of the Working
Group, NTC said it had approached the government of India (GoI) to take the group into its confidence so as to find amicable solution. NTC said GoI was working towards that end. Meanwhile, NTC has lauded Nagaland GBs Federation for having come out boldly in support of inclusive solution to the extent of meeting the Prime Minister with written representation on the same. Since GBs are the traditional custodians of our culture, customs and way of life, NTC said they are the appropriate platform to spell out what will be best for the people of Nagaland. NTC, NGBF, various civil bodies and Naga intellectuals have sufficiently conveyed their opinions on the issue to the representative of GoI in particular already, it said. Therefore, NTC said it was hopeful that the GoI would take “wise decision in the greater interest of the Nagas in particular and of the Nation in general.”

paid a second visit to the commission and insisted on their demand for immediate counting of the votes. The BJP has nominated Shah and Irani for two Rajya Sabha seats from the state and they would sail through. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel is pitted against the saffron party’s Balwantsinh Rajput for the third seat. It has become a high-stakes battle for Congress, thanks to infighting and resignations, with the BJP fancying its prospects to win the third seat also, defeating Patel, who is seeking a fifth RS term. It is likely that even after the counting, either of the party of could take the matter to court.
NEW DELHI, AUG 8 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to make Yoga education compulsory in schools saying that it was for the Centre to take a call on such issues. A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta dismissed a petition filed by an advocate to make Yoga compulsory in schools after Centre opposed the plea. “We are no body to say what should be taught in schools. It is none of our business. We cannot pass such order, “the bench said. In its affidavit, the human resource development ministry informed the SC, “Right To Education (RTE) Act does not specifically mention about the curriculum of yoga. As such, it cannot be concluded that yoga education has become an enforceable fundamental right. Yoga is an integral part of the curriculum of ‘Health and Physical Education’, which is a compulsory subject for Classes 1 to 10. To that extent, yoga has not been neglected in school education.”
The Centre also clarified that education figured in the concurrent list and a majority of schools were under the control of states and Union Territories. Hence, it was for states and Union Territories to ensure compliance of the provisions of NCF, under which yoga is an integral part of ‘Health and Physical Education’ at all levels of school education, it said. “Implementation of various subject areas, including yoga, depends upon states and UTs concerned,” an official said. “NCF 2005 provides that yoga may be introduced from the primary level onwards in informal ways, but formal introduction of yoga exercises should begin only from Class 6 onwards,” it said. “So far as schools affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education are concerned, which has adopted National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) curriculum and syllabi, ‘Health and Physical Education’ is compulsory for Class 1 to 10 and optional at Classes 11 and 12,” the Centre said.
