Will not interfere with farmers’ protest: SC

NEW DELHI, DEC 17 (PTI): Farmers agitation should be allowed to continue “without impediment” and this court will not “interfere” with it as the right to protest is a fundamental right, the Supreme Court Thursday said on the ongoing stir of agriculturists on Delhi borders. The apex court, which put a sole caveat that there should not be any breach of peace either by farmers or police, also mooted an idea of putting on hold the implementation of the laws to enable negotiations with the agitating farmers which was opposed by the Centre saying agriculturists would then not come forward for the talks. The top court was told by Attorney General K K Venugopal that he would get back after taking instructions on the suggestions. While Acknowledging the right to non-violent protest of farmers, the apex court was also of the view that the farmers’ right to protest should not infringe the fundamental rights of others to move freely and in getting essential food and other supplies as right to protest cannot mean block-

Covid-19 vaccines not a silver bullet, says WHO official GENEVA, DEC 17 (IANS): A top World Health Organization (WHO) official has called for greater vigilance amid the roll-out of a Covid19 vaccine, saying the vaccine is not a “silver bullet” that will end the nearly year-long pandemic which has infected over 74 million people across the global and killed more than 1.64 million others. “Whoever you are, wherever you live, as long as the virus is circulating somewhere, we all remain at risk, and we must keep preparing for the worst-case scenario,” Xinhua news agency quoted WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific Takeshi Kasai as saying in a virtual media briefing on Wednesday. Kasai appealed to the younger and socially active people under 40 years of age to “do everything you can to avoid infection for yourself and everybody around you” despite the anxiety and uncertainties brought about by the pandemic. “By following the advice of health authorities you can directly contribute to protecting the lives of people in your community and in doing so to reviving your society’s economies in 2021,” the top official said.

ade of the entire city. A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde, which said it was worried with the way things are going on, was told by both the Centre and one of the farmers union that the negotiations are not happening at the moment. The bench said in its bid to resolve the impasse over the three contentitious agri laws, it wanted to set up of an “impartial and independent” panel of agriculture experts and farmer unions. However, it held it back as farmers unions, impleaded as parties by it

on Wednesday, could not appear to give their views. “In order to bring about an effective solution to the present stalemate between the protesters and the Government of India, we consider it appropriate in the interests of justice to constitute a Committee consisting of independent and impartial persons including experts in the field of Agriculture for the purpose. “This may not be possible without hearing all the necessary parties. Till the parties come before us, it would be advisable to

obtain suggestions about the constitution of the said Committee from all the parties which may be submitted by them on the date of next hearing in the matter,” said the bench which also comprised justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian.

Don’t fall prey to ‘lies’ of Oppn: Agri Min to farmers

Accusing the Congress and other opposition parties of spreading falsehood about the new farm laws, union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Thursday appealed to the

agitating farmers not to fall prey to these “white lies” and said the Centre was ready to address all their concerns. In an apparent attack on the left parties, the minister said they were still speaking the language they used in 1962 when India went to war with China. The minister, in an eight-page open letter to farmers, said the Modigovernment was committed to their welfare and stressed that the new legislations were aimed at benefitting small and marginal farmers. Assuring that the minimum support price (MSP) will continue and the existing mandi system will be strengthened, the minister appealed to the farmers to dismiss “white lies being spread by politically motivated people”. Tomar, who is leading the negotiation with about 40 farmer unions along with Food Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Commerce Som Parkash, asserted that there were no provisions in these laws for corporate firms to take control of farmers’ lands.
