As part of Statehood Day, the bust of Dr Imkongliba Ao would be unveiled at Raj Bhavan Kohima. On December 1, 1963, Dr S Radhakrishnan, then President of India, declared Nagaland as the 16th State of the Indian Union. achieve what was otherwise unthinkable because what was achieved could never have been achieved through violence. However, the Governor said the “protracted armed insurgency and endless peace process have taken an unacceptable heavy toll on the people of Nagaland . He said “Since 1980, the people of Nagaland have suffered enormously by the guns of people from outside the state, inspired by Maoist ideology and tactics”. Ravi also reminded that the government of India “has never ever talked, much less negotiated with anyone on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Country” and warned that any “misadventure to disintegrate this great Nation shall not be tolerated.” Ravi reminded that the government of India “is absolutely clear, that there is and there shall be only one National Flag and Constitution of India” and that anyone talking anything contrary “ is peddling preposterous lies” adding , “they are trying to confuse and mislead people.” (Full text on p-6)

D I M A P U R , N OV 3 0 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) asserted that the history of Naga political struggle and the ongoing “Indo-Naga” political talk was “a living testimony” that the present Nagaland state was the “brainchild of a few treacherous Nagas” that showed up in the name of Naga People’s Convention (NPC) hijacking the Naga issue without the concern of the “bona fide freedom fighters.” NSCN (I-M) through its MIP stated that Intelligence Bureau (IB) was “at its divisive game” after getting hold of a few Nagas especially government employees “to join the bandwagon, taking the name as NPC.” NSCN (I-M) said that the Convention without the consent, support and participation of the Naga people arrived at an agreement called the 16 Points Agreement that was responsible for the creation of Nagaland as the 16th state of the Indian Union. “This fragmented the Indian-occupied Naga territories by placing them into different adminis-
Festival too. This was stated in a press release by federation’s president Sepili L Sangtam. Meanwhile, reports received from five districts of Eastern Nagaland stated that the agitation was peaceful on the first day. (Cont’d on p-8)

KOHIMA, NOV 30 (NPN): Deputy chief minister Y Patton said agreeing to Eastern Naga Students’ Federation’s (ENSF) demand for 45% reservation would take the overall reservation to 52%, including the reservation for other tribes, which the Supreme court would not allow as there was already an apex court’s ruling that reservation for backward tribes should not exceed 50%. He said this while interacting with media per-
sons on the sidelines of an event when asked about the demand of ENSF, which has also launched a stir from Monday. H o w e v e r, N S C N (I-M) stated that creation of Nagaland state failed to stop the political aspirations of the Naga people, who “set off the political struggle with greater passion and determination as testified by the ongoing struggle.” For the Nagas, NSCN (I-M) said the creation of Nagaland state “as a result of manipulation and treachery” has been recorded as “an act of insult to the freedom fighters” in particular and to the Naga people in general. “For such a treacherous act being brought to live in the name of commemorating the formation of Nagaland state we condemn such an act of defiance,” NSCN (I-M) asserted. Stating that the NPC’s role was thus rejected and condemned by the Naga freedom fighters including AZ Phizo, the NSCN (I-M) said NPC’s 16-Point Agreement sowed the seeds of colonialism and division. KO H I M A , N OV 3 0 (NPN): Deputy chief minister Y Patton inaugurated the long-awaited one carriageway of the four-lane Sanourü bridge leading to civil secretariat and Nagaland Legislative Assembly here on Monday. In his brief address on the occasion before flagging off the two-way traffic, Patton, who is also in charge of home and PWD (R&B) departments, acknowledged the department, Kohima village, contractors and others involved for completing the work despite many challenges. He appealed to the contractors to complete the remaining two-lane portion before 2021-end and assured that any issue that could arise would be resolved by the State government for smooth and early completion of the remaining portion of the bridge. In his brief report, PWD (R&B) commissioner & secretary Rovilatuo Mor narrated how heavy rains in 2015 caused considerable damage to many roads and bridges, thus
affecting movement of vehicles, adding that one such major catastrophe was stagnation of water in Sanourü river due to blockage of the cross drain (culvert). Subsequently, he said construction of a permanent four-lane RCC bridge over Sanourü river was proposed and Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MORTH) sanctioned the project in December 2015 and work was allotted to M/s Vilelie Khamo - KC Angami (joint venture) in July 2016. In view of the inconveniences being faced by commuters due to the subway, Mor said contractors were directed to concentrate on completing one portion of the bridge first, and accordingly the contractors tirelessly carried out the work and completed the two-lane portion. He claimed that work for the remaining twolane portion and ancillary works were on in full swing and exuded confidence that the contractors and the department would execute the work with the same enthusiasm and complete it.
