Raj Bhavan would also remember the sacrifice and struggle of the founding fathers who conceptualised the idea of Naga nationalism and sovereignty, they said. As part of Statehood Day, the bust of Dr Imkongliba Ao would be unveiled at Raj Bhavan Kohima. On December 1, 1963, Dr S Radhakrishnan, then President of India, declared Nagaland as the 16th State of the Indian Union. achieve what was otherwise unthinkable because what was achieved could never have been achieved through violence. However, the Governor said the “protracted armed insurgency and endless peace process have taken an unacceptable heavy toll on the people of Nagaland . He said “Since 1980, the people of Nagaland have suffered enormously by the guns of people from outside the state, inspired by Maoist ideology and tactics”. Ravi also reminded that the government of India “has never ever talked, much less negotiated with anyone on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Country” and warned that any “misadventure to disintegrate this great Nation shall not be tolerated.” Ravi reminded that the government of India “is absolutely clear, that there is and there shall be only one National Flag and Constitution of India” and that anyone talking anything contrary “ is peddling preposterous lies” adding , “they are trying to confuse and mislead people.” (Full text on p-6)

D I M A P U R , N OV 3 0 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) asserted that the history of Naga political struggle and the ongoing “Indo-Naga” political talk was “a living testimony” that the present Nagaland state was the “brainchild of a few treacherous Nagas” that showed up in the name of Naga People’s Convention (NPC) hijacking the Naga issue without the concern of the “bona fide freedom fighters.” NSCN (I-M) through its MIP stated that Intelligence Bureau (IB) was “at its divisive game” after getting hold of a few Nagas especially government employees “to join the bandwagon, taking the name as NPC.” NSCN (I-M) said that the Convention without the consent, support and participation of the Naga people arrived at an agreement called the 16 Points Agreement that was responsible for the creation of Nagaland as the 16th state of the Indian Union. “This fragmented the Indian-occupied Naga territories by placing them into different adminis-

Meeting on Dec 3 to discuss ENSF demand Correspondent
KOHIMA, NOV 30 (NPN): Deputy chief minister Y Patton said agreeing to Eastern Naga Students’ Federation’s (ENSF) demand for 45% reservation would take the overall reservation to 52%, including the reservation for other tribes, which the Supreme court would not allow as there was already an apex court’s ruling that reservation for backward tribes should not exceed 50%. He said this while interacting with media per-
sons on the sidelines of an event when asked about the demand of ENSF, which has also launched a stir from Monday. Stating that a committee meeting has been scheduled on December 3, he remarked that till then he could not comment further on the matter. To another query, Patton said the chief secretary had already appealed to ENSF to withdraw its ultimatum. He remarked, “What can be done if they are still going ahead with their agitation.”

In his brief report, PWD (R&B) commissioner & secretary Rovilatuo Mor narrated how heavy rains in 2015 caused considerable damage to many roads and bridges, thus
affecting movement of vehicles, adding that one such major catastrophe was stagnation of water in Sanourü river due to blockage of the cross drain (culvert). In view of the inconveniences being faced by commuters due to the subway, Mor said contractors were directed to concentrate on completing one portion of the bridge first, and accordingly the contractors tirelessly carried out the work and completed the two-lane portion. He claimed that work for the remaining twolane portion and ancillary works were on in full swing and exuded confidence that the contractors and the department would execute the work with the same enthusiasm and complete it. Diethono Nakhro receiving the A. Kevichusa citizenship award 2020 on November 30 at Kohima. (NP)
Correspondent K O H I M A , N OV 3 0 (NPN): The annual A. Kevichusa citizenship award 2020 instituted to foster citizens working for common good was awarded to state commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Diethono Nakhro at RCEMPA, Monday. Thanking the Kevichusa Foundation for the award, Nakhro opined that disability does not
necessarily mean poverty, but people with disabilities were more likely to face poverty due to discrimination, limited access to education, employment and lack of inclusion in livelihood and other social programmes. While a lot of changes have been happening in recent times with better disability awareness, perceptible positive changes in attitudes and with government more receptive and proactive, Nakhro how-
ever, lamented that PWDs continue to face nearly insurmountable barriers in the most basic places. Nakhro said that so much more needed to be done for Nagaland to become truly inclusive and enabling. Earlier, announcing the recipient, associate professor and head of department Tenyidie, Dr. Mimi Kevichusa Ezung appraised that Nakhro was the first disability self-advocate of disability in the state and was a
member of the National Committee on Rights of PWDs since 2013 and Nagaland partner to the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People since 2013. She said Nakhro was the Nagaland partner to the National Disability Network since 2014 and advisor to the Nagaland State Disability Forum since 2015 and the state election icon for PwDs from 2017-2020. She further said that Nakhro has been appointed state commissioner for PWDs in the year 2019 and in 2015 awarded the NCPEDP Lemontree Helen Keller Award in the category “role model person with disability”. Ezung said that Nakhro was also awarded the Classic Award in recognition of her work to empower PWDs in 2019. Baptist Church Khonoma, pastor Rev. HIV&AIDS epidemic in NE alarming
Agartala/Aizawl, Nov 30 (IANS): The status of HIV&AIDS epidemic in north-eastern states of India is indeed alarming, said a report by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). The AIDS-related mortality per 1,00,000 population in India was estimated to be the highest in Manipur (36.86), followed by Mizoram (28.34), Nagaland (26.20), Andhra Pradesh (21.76), Puducherry (15.33), Meghalaya (11.08) and Telangana (10.79), the report added. Union Ministr y of Health and Family Welfare’s Joint Secretary, Alok Saxena, in his observation, incorporated in the recent NACO report, said evidence has emerged globally that HIV-infected people are more at Covid-19 death risk as compared to HIVnegative patients. “The challenges for the National AIDS Control Programme have multiplied with the Covid-19 pandemic,” Saxena added in the NACO report available with IANS. In another disturbing development, the trend of Intravenous Drug Users (IDU) is rising at a rocket speed among the youth between 15 and 20 years in several north-eastern states, especially in Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland. According to the Excise and Narcotics Department officials from Mizoram, nearly 1,645 people have died of drug abuse in the state since 1984 when the first case was reported.

Representative Image (Reuters) “Sharing of a common syringe by injecting drug users is a key reason for Mizoram becoming one of the leading states of HIV&AIDS prevalent in India, registering an average of five to six HIV positive cases a day,” an Excise and Narcotics Department official on condition of anonymity told IANS. Besides, Mizoram with 2.04 per cent, in two other north-eastern states Manipur and Nagaland, the HIV prevalence rates are 1.43 per cent and 1.15 per cent per one million people, respectively. Mizoram recorded more than 20,000 HIV positive cases and nearly 2,000 deaths since the first case in 1990. Smuggling of drugs, arms and other contraband worth thousands of crores takes place frequently in the north-eastern region from across the borders, especially from Myanmar. Officials said the drugs were smuggled from Myanmar which shares 1,643 km of unfenced border with four north-eastern states -- Mizoram (510 km), Arunachal Pradesh (520 km),
Manipur (398 km) and Nagaland (215 km). A recent 100-page study report submitted to Mizoram state AIDS Control Society said the drugs and substance abuse problem in Mizo society probably started as a spill over of international drug trafficking. “Mizoram shares two long international borders, one with Myanmar and the “Golden Triangle” in the east and with Bangladesh in the west. The geographical location of the state provides an easy route for trafficking of heroin. Being adjacent to the “Golden Triangle”, Mizoram is one of the drug trafficking routes from the Golden Triangle to India and elsewhere. Drug abuse has become a rampant problem among the youth with the initial drug abuse of heroin. The 100-page NACO report said nationally HIV incidence was estimated at 0.05 per 1,000 uninfected population in 2019. It had declined from 0.54 in 1995 to 0.05 in 2019.
“State and Union Territory (UT)-wise, incidence per 1,000 uninfected population was estimated to be the highest in the three northeastern states of Mizoram (1.18 per 1,000 uninfected population), Nagaland (0.73) and Manipur (0.34) in 2019. Among Female Sex Worker (FSW), incidence (percentage) in the country was as high as 2.12 per cent in Meghalaya, followed by 1.14 per cent in Mizoram and Nagaland.” The report said the state and UT-wise, annual AIDS-related deaths were estimated to have declined from 2010 to 2019 across the country excluding Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and Assam. Nationally the annual new HIV infections had decreased by 37 per cent since 2010. The decline in annual new HIV infections had been witnessed in all states and UTs except Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Chandigarh. “Except Manipur, the HIV prevalence in the northeastern states has shown a stable to rising trend due to a relatively higher number of annual new HIV infections. Annual new HIV infections have increased in Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura while being almost stable in Mizoram and Nagaland during 2010-2019.” There is a need for community-driven integrated AIDS response in these states on an urgent basis to respond to the growing HIV problem in the region,” the NACO report said.

Farmers protest: Experts warn of Covid spread NEW DELHI/SONIPAT (HRY), NOV 30 (PTI): The shadow of the pandemic looms large and experts warn their agitation could well be a COVID-19 superspreader but farmers, some in masks and many without them, protesting in Delhi and at gateways into the city say the new farm laws pose a greater threat to their survival. As thousands of farmers, mostly from Punjab and Haryana but also from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, protest at the national capital’s border points and in north Delhi’s Burari ground for the fifth day on Monday, COVID-19 continues its spread. There have been few signs of social distancing during the protests that started last week with the farmers, banded under various organisations, leaving their homes and moving towards Delhi. “A protest is a mass gathering and thus from a public health perspective, I would urge protective and preventive behaviour against the spread of coronavirus infection, failing which a superspreading event might set in,” cautioned Dr Samiran Panda, head of the Epidemiology and Communicable Diseases division at the Indian Council of Medical Research. Seeking strict compliance with norms, he said It is important to note that SARS-COV-2 is a transmission efficient virus and such gatherings are conducive to its spread. Many of the farmers,

threatening to block all five entry points into the capital, said they are aware the infection is still raging but the Centre’s new farm laws are a bigger threat. Gurmeet Singh from Faridkot in Punjab, for instance, has been at the Burari ground, one of the largest in the city, for three days and counting. And he has no intention of moving. For him, and hundreds of other farmers at the North Delhi ground where they were allowed to congregate, the three contentious farm laws are a bigger disease. “We may even survive corona, but how will we survive this cruel law that will take away our bread and butter,” Gurmeet told PTI. In another corner of the sprawling ground, a team of
seven medicos from Delhi’s AAP government has tested over 90 farmers for COVID19 since November 28. “There have been no positives as yet,” said a medical officer on the condition of anonymity. “We tested 40 people on the 28th, then another team took over, and today we have tested 50 people so far,” the officer said. Several e-rickshaws roamed the ground to create awareness of the disease and the necessity of wearing masks and maintaining hand hygiene. But the message appeared to be getting drowned out in the slogans, protest songs and speeches. Terrorism biggest challenge faced by region: India at SCO
NEW DELHI, NOV 30 (PTI): Asserting that terrorism is the biggest challenge the region is facing, India on Monday criticised Pakistan for using it as an “instrument of state policy”, and called upon the SCO to combat the menace collectively and enforce internationally recognised legal statutes to comprehensively eradicate safe havens, infrastructure and financial networks supporting terrorism. In an address at the Council of Heads of Government meeting of the eight-member Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said the most important challenge faced by the region is terrorism, particularly cross-border terrorism, and that India remained concerned about threats emerging from ungoverned spaces as well. “Terrorism is truly the enemy of humanity. It is a scourge we need to collectively combat. We remain concerned about threats emerging from ungoverned spaces and are particularly concerned about states that leverage terrorism as an instrument of state policy. Such an approach is entirely

against the spirit and ideals and the charter of the SCO,” he said at the virtual meet hosted by India. Naidu did not name Pakistan directly during his address. He said elimination of this threat will help the countries realise shared potential and create conditions for stable and secure economic growth and sustainable development. He also called upon SCO member states to enforce internationally recognised legal statutes to comprehensively eradicate safe havens, infrastructure and financial networks supporting terrorism, a statement issued by Naidu’s office said. In another indirect reference to Pakistan, the Vice President criticised attempts to bring bilateral issues into the SCO by blatantly violating its well-established prin-
ciples and norms of charter safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the member states. “Such acts are counterproductive to the spirit of consensus and cooperation that define the SCO as an organisation,” he said. In mid-Se ptember, India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval walked out of a virtual meeting of top security officials of the SCO member states after the Pakistani representative projected a map that inaccurately depicted Kashmir. India hosted the meet for the first time after it got full membership of the influential grouping in 2017. The council of heads of government is the second highest forum of the SCO after the annual summit of the top leaders of the grouping. India’s representation at the SCO council of heads of government has often been at the level of a cabinet minister. Last year, Rajnath Singh attended it in Uzbekistan. Naidu asserted that India was committed to taking its cooperation within SCO to a new height by playing a proactive, positive and constructive role in the grouping.
duce from their six-acre farm. “If we stay careful we won’t get corona, but if we don’t protest against these farm laws and this government we will definitely die of hunger,” he said. His desperation finds resonance at the Singhu and Tikri border points, where farmers have been camping in large numbers. Some volunteers were distributing masks to the protesting farmers. As the farmers, many who came in tractor-trolleys and trucks in preparation for a long haul, continued their protest, two doctors, Sarika Verma and Karan Juneja, were at Singhu, urging farmers to wear masks and maintain social distancing. “We are also offering treatment if anybody faces
States asked to ensure fire safety in hospitals NEW DELHI, NOV 30 (PTI): The Centre on Monday asked all states to ensure proper fire safety in hospitals and nursing homes, saying utmost precautions must be taken at a time when the country is fighting the coronavirus pandemic. Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla wrote a letter to chief secretaries of all states and Union territories in the wake of recent fire incidents in two hospitals in Gujarat which killed 14 people. The home secretary said occurrence of various fire incidents in hospitals and nursing homes in recent past and non-adherence of fire safety measures by authorities in their respective jurisdiction is a matter of concern. Bhalla said recently six precious lives of COVID19 patients were lost in a fire incident at an ICU ward of a hospital in Rajkot and eight people died in a hospital in Ahmedabad. “At such a crucial time, when the country is fighting against COVID- 19 pandemic, utmost precaution needs to be taken to avoid such incidents in future,” he said in the letter.
any problem or injury,” Verma said. Dr K K Aggarwal, president of the Confederation of Medical Association of Asia and Oceania (CMAAO) and former IMA president, said the farmers’ agitation should not have been allowed by the government. Politics should never get precedence in a pandemic, he said. “Government has the powers under the Diseases Epidemic Act to take control of any situation which can spread the infection,” he said. “The farmers’ agitation will end up in superspreading events which will not only be a danger to Delhi but also to the whole country,” he asserted. As experts worry at the lack of safeguards to prevent the infection from spreading, Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) president Joginder Singh Ugrahan said the farmers fear they will lose their livelihoods. Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee general secretary Sarwan Singh Pandher asked why coronavirus posed a serious threat to life only during the farmers’ agitation, and not during the recent Bihar assembly polls. “When Bihar elections took place, where was COVID-19? When any political gathering takes place, where is coronavirus?” he asked, an apparent reference to the election rallies. He claimed the issue comes up only when farmers begin an agitation for their rights.
PM attacks oppn parties, says they play tricks on farmers VARANASI (UP), NOV 30 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday tore into the opposition over the protests against the new agri-marketing laws, accusing them of playing tricks against the farmers. The attack comes when thousands of farmers are gathered at the entry points of the national capital, seeking the repeal of the three laws, which Modi called “historic”. “The farmers are being misled on these historic agriculture reform laws by the same people who for decades have misled them,” he said, referring to the opposition parties but not directly naming them. CHANDIGARH, NOV 30 (AGENCIES): As part of its restructuring process, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has, in an unprecedented step, shut down three of its laboratories and merged its mandate and staff with other establishments. This is the first step towards minimising functional overlap between laboratories having a similar charter and rationalising expenditure, sources said. More laboratories are expected to be shut down or merged in the near future. Two laboratories in Delhi, the Defence Terrain Research Laboratory (DTRL) and the Laser Science and Technology Center (LASTEC) and one in Hyderabad, Advanced Numerical Research and Analysis Group (ANURAG) are now no longer functional as independent entities. DTRL was involved in the analysis of terrain characteristics and providing geo-spatial solutions and terrain intelligence for the armed forces. Its staff has now been merged with
Snow and Avalanche Studies Establishment (SASE) based at Chandigarh that is working in avalanche forecasting, structural control in snowbound mountaineous areas, data collection in cryospheric regions and creation of snow cover information system. SASE has been renamed as Defence Geological Research Establishment. LASTEC was working in the fields of laser sources, laser countermeasures and laser spectroscopy and was involved in the development of high power laser sources and related technologies for directed energy applications as well as detectors, weapon locators and laser illuminators. Nagaland Post Vol. XXx NO. 357 Dimapur, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2020
Nagaland at crossroad
N
agaland will observe its 58th statehood day on December 1,2020. It was 57 years ago that a new chapter was opened in Kohima, the scene of the famous ‘Battle of Kohima’, when people woke up to a bright sunny Sunday morning. For the people who gathered to witness the official inaugural and with thousands lining up the roads to welcome the President of India, it was the making of history as citizens of the 16th state under the Indian union. Nagaland became the first state in the north east to be bifurcated from Assam. On December 1,1963, the second President of India Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan arrived by helicopter to formally declare Nagaland as the 16th state of India. In his speech delivered in Kohima at the local ground(Khouchiezie) while officially inaugurating the newly created 16th state, the president of India Dr.S.Radhakrishnan pointedly stated that the constitution of India respects the distinct identity of the Nagas and ensured them constitutional and legal guarantee under Article 371A. Statehood for Nagaland on December 1,1963 was the fruition of giving peace a chance and raising hopes that consolidation was better than confrontation. The darkness that swamped erstwhile Naga Hills of Assam and Tuensang Frontier Division under NEFA w as unparalleled in post-independence India. Cries echoed the hills as inhuman atrocities led to its soil and rivers run red with blood. Nagaland statehood was borne out of political necessity through tireless efforts of Naga leaders who formed the Naga People’s Convention(NPC) in 1957 at Kohima. The NPC leaders believed that thousands of families affected during the decades of conflict and under tragic circumstances, deserved a better future. Due to the tremendous suffering of the people, NPC initiated a settlement which became known as the 16 Point Agreement signed on July 26,1960 with the government of India. This was to be the imprint for statehood but rejected by the Naga nationalists who described it as “betrayal and a sell out”. NPC leaders took the risk to provide an alternative but were condemned and hunted down for betrayal and some eventually paid for with their lives. On August 20, 1961, NPC president Dr.Imkongliba Ao was shot and wounded in Mokokchung town while on his way home from his pharmacy. He succumbed to injury on August 22 1961. Dr.Imkongliba thus became the first martyr of the 16-Point Agreement for Nagaland state. NPC leaders continued to call on the Naga nationalists to resolve their demands through peaceful negotiations. Nagaland provided the platform through which New Delhi was able to communicate to address the problem. Of course, there are any number of views about statehood of Nagaland but academic debates will not change the fact, that Nagaland state is a reality. Had NPC leaders not been shrewd enough, Nagas would have remained under an autonomous district in Assam perhaps like the Bodos. There are still so much to discuss and it is here that the people have to decide whether they desire to realise their dream of the future or live in the bitterness of the past. It is the people and not the land that makes a nation and here, perhaps 57 years is a long time and a time to show maturity so that Nagas can march ahead with clarity and wisdom.
DailyDevotion “By the Grace of God I Am What I Am” By the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain… —1 Corinthians 15:10 The way we continually talk about our own inabilities is an insult to our Creator. To complain over our incompetence is to accuse God falsely of having overlooked us. Get into the habit of examining from God’s perspective those things that sound so humble to men. You will be amazed at how unbelievably inappropriate and disrespectful they are to Him. We say things such as, “Oh, I shouldn’t claim to be sanctified; I’m not a saint.” But to say that before God means, “No, Lord, it is impossible for You to save and sanctify me; there are opportunities I have not had and so many imperfections in my brain and body; no, Lord, it isn’t possible.” That may sound wonderfully humble to others, but before God it is an attitude of defiance. Conversely, the things that sound humble before God may sound exactly the opposite to people. To say, “Thank God, I know I am saved and sanctified,” is in God’s eyes the purest expression of humility. It means you have so completely surrendered yourself to God that you know He is true. Never worry about whether what you say sounds humble before others or not. But always be humble before God, and allow Him to be your all in all. There is only one relationship that really matters, and that is your personal relationship to your personal Redeemer and Lord. If you maintain that at all costs, letting everything else go, God will fulfill His purpose through your life. One individual life may be of priceless value to God’s purposes, and yours may be that life.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2020
Post-mortem
Speech of Governor R.N. Ravi on 58th Statehood Day
My dear brothers, sisters and young friends of Nagaland, Namaskar. On the eve of 58th Statehood Day of Nagaland, I extend my warmest greetings and best wishes to you all. On this auspicious occasion we pay our heartfelt tribute to the Founding Fathers of Nagaland – the leaders of the Naga Peoples’ Convention, martyrs and countless Nagas whose blood, toil, sweat and sacrifices led to the birth of the 16th State of the Union of India. We remember them with utmost gratitude for their strategic foresight and political vision in uniting the Nagas living in Assam and NEFA and creating this beautiful State with extraordinary constitutional safeguards to their unique identity and interests. Nagaland State is an abiding testimony to the triumph of the politics of peace over the politics of bloodshed. It is a proud saga of the indomitable Naga spirit which rejected the politics of gun and gun powder in favour of politics of democracy and dialogue. On this Day, we proudly remember our founding fathers for their political forbearance in upholding the true Naga democratic spirit in which they held widespread consultations among all the tribes of Nagaland and initiated a socio-political churning among them on the nature and course of the future of the people. Over three years of intense political process helped crystallise the free-will of the people which was subsequently translated into reality through political dialogue with the Government of India. The Government of India recognised the uniqueness of the
F
Nagas and sanctified it in Article 371-A of the Indian Constitution. Nagaland State was born with adequate special safeguards to the identity and interests of the Naga people. We salute the founding fathers for their achievements for the people of Nagaland – which could have been otherwise unthinkable. Violence could never achieve and shall never achieve anything like this. History bears testimony to the fact that armed insurgencies have rarely succeeded in achieving their political objectives and have invariably left a trail of blood, betrayal and bitterness. Protracted armed insurgency and endless peace process have taken an unacceptable heavy toll on the people of Nagaland. Since 1980, the people of Nagaland have suffered enormously by the guns of people from outside the State, inspired by Maoist ideology and tactics. In pursuance of their new found political ideology which was antithetical to the inherent ethos, values and customary systems of Naga society, they unleashed a cultural genocide, akin to the Cultural Revolution in our neighbouring Country and killed thousands of Nagas including infants and women and tried to exterminate the tribal and intellectual leadership of Nagaland. Free-speech was muzzled with guns and political dissenters were exterminated. Scores of churches were destroyed. These are documented facts of history. Those who lost their kins have neither forgotten their loved ones nor forgiven the perpetrators. Our most precious resource,
the human resource has suffered the most. Over the decades, more so ironically since the beginning of the Peace Process, Nagaland State has steadily declined on the Human Development Indices relative to other States in the North-East region. We are lagging behind in all the critical sectors like Education, Health, Infrastructure and Livelihood. Over 60 per cent of our youth are not reaching the High School and our roads are in abysmal conditions. Pace and quality of our infrastructure development is grossly compromised. Nagaland has to be rescued from the fatal grip of the vicious circle of vices. The Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi is seriously committed to it from day one of his taking charge. Under his dynamic and visionary leadership fundamental anomalies and distortions in the ongoing peace process have been corrected by making it truly inclusive. Naga political issue belongs to the Naga people. No single entity should claim the sole franchise over it. Nagas have existed and survived through centuries through their customary and traditional institutions. Heart of Nagaland beats in its villages. The traditional village institutions and the tribal bodies are the primary stakeholders in the Naga political issue. Their freely expressed wishes and decisions are paramount in any settlement. They have clearly expressed their mind. They demand conclusion of the endless Peace-Process without any further delay. They want end of the gun-culture. They want the rule of law and justice. They want an environ-
ment for flourishing of the genius of its people. Every other entity should respect them and their wishes. Being disrespectful to the primary stakeholders is an insult to the people of Nagaland. Any attempt to intimidate or threaten them will invite the wrath of the people and full might of the laws of the land. Friends, the essence of India is its unity in diversity. Multitudes of ethnicities, languages, cultures and cuisine enrich this beautiful country from Kerala to Kashmir and Kohima to Kutch. The territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Union of India is Supreme. The Government of India has never ever talked, much less negotiated with anyone on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Country. Any misadventure to disintegrate this great Nation shall not be tolerated. The Indian National Flag and Constitution are the pride of the people of India. The Government of India is absolutely clear that there is and there shall be only one National Flag and Constitution in India. Anyone talking anything contrary is peddling preposterous lies. They are trying to confuse and mislead the people. Friends, today we stand at the crossroads of history. The right decision taken today will determine our future and the destiny of our coming generations. With common understanding having been reached on all the issues on the table and conclusion of talks on October 31, 2019, the people of Nagaland are anxiously waiting for the new dawn. However, there are some people who are standing as a roadblock to the aspirations of the people of Nagaland. I urge
these people to see the writings on the wall, to come out of their make-believe echo-chamber and listen to the voice of the people and in a true democratic spirit respect their wishes. As we prepare to embark on a new journey, this Statehood Day, let us commit ourselves to building the Nagaland of the dreams of its Founding Fathers – a Nagaland where the free-spirit of the people will blossom to the fullest, where the youth will dream big in an environment conducive to fulfilling those dreams, where people will no longer live under the shadow of invisible guns, where entrepreneurs will not have to bury their ideas and aspirations for fear of extortions in the guise of illegal taxations, where free-speech and progressive ideas proliferate, where youths do not have to choose guns for livelihood, where opportunities will abound, and where the laws and justice shall prevail. Let us commit ourselves to reclaim our state from violence and desolation and restore the glories it deserves. Statehood Day is the Day of Celebrations for the people of Nagaland. We used to celebrate it in previous years with all the gaiety and cultural splendour of the people of the State during Hornbill Festival. This year, due to the global pandemic COVID19, unfortunately we may not be able to do it at that scale. However, true to the indomitable Naga spirit, we will do so in our own households observing the needed COVID protocols. Once again I wish you all a Happy Statehood Day. May God Bless Nagaland ! Jai Hind.
The perturbed impact of counterfeit alcohol in Nagaland
ake or illegally churn out alcohol that is produced in unlicensed distilleries or people’s abode or small cottage units and intended for sale is termed Fake alcohol. Counterfeit alcohol is a related issue where cheap or adulterated alcohol is sold with fake packaging by means of manipulation. Alcohol was perceived to exist for medicinal purposes during the sixteenth century however the transgress misuse of alcohol was witnessed in the eighteenth and nineteenth century which ultimately propelled some significant countries such as US to take proceedings to put an embargo on the manufacture, sale, import and export of the exceeding alcohol. Nevertheless by late 1930s such stoppage on the exceeding alcohol remains discontinued. Alcohol prohibition in India is also in force in states like Bihar, Gujarat, Mizoram, Nagaland as well as in the union territory of Lakshadweep. The Nagaland liquor Total prohibition Act 1989 reads “to totally prohibit possession, sale, consumption and manufacture of liquor in and of import and export thereof in the state of Nagaland. Despite its tremendous lay hold of steps, the act looks more of redundant in the current scenario. In 2019 Nagaland reported zero convictions under the NLTP Act as well as the Nagaland Excise Act as per the Prison Statistics India 2019 report released by the National Crime Records Bureau. The report requires massive applauds from the denizen but the irony says a different theory though. In a state where according to the study published by the “Magnitude of substance use in India 2019 report released by the ministry of social justice and empowerment, 8.1 percent of the population of Nagaland or 3.62 lakh people currently consume or use alcohol. Not a single individual was fettered for breaking the protocol under the NLTP Act manifest in itself a pure mockery towards justice. Prohibition leaps
and bounds counterfeit, adulterated alcohols, bootleggers and black market. The prohibition is the pivotal reason that impetus the syndicate group to indulge in hooch system thereby maneuvers the alcohol into adulteration. Prohibition infact has inherent not halted the people from drinking, people tends to urge for even low quality product which they know is disastrous to their health. Most often the clandestine cottage industry preparations are made in unhygienic environments, the additives to the deadly mix enhance the hazard. It also creates an environment of revenue loss to the public exchequer. In addition, it has serious implications for consumers. Producing fake alcohol is a catch sight of making money and it can be bought cheaply by the consumers. However, it possess a gigantic problem thereby deteriorating our health and at risk. There have been many instances of poisoning and deaths following the consumption of adulterated liquor. People of the lower socio- economic status are inflicted more as they usually have the habit of consuming illicit or home brewed alcohol which they get it at a fair reasonable price despite its known hazard. Intensified certified alcoholic drinks are made with ethanol – beverage that is safe to drink in moderation. But fake alcoholic drinks are manufactured using cheaper means of chemicals used in cleaning fluids, nail polish remover and automobile screen wash, as well as methanol and isopropanol which are used in antifreeze. Drinking beverages containing these chemicals can cause nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, drowsiness and dizziness. It can also lead to kidney or liver problems and even coma. Methanol, a substance which can be used in fake vodka, may cause permanent blindness. Per capita alcohol consumption in India has more than doubled from 2005 to 2016, according to a report published by the
WHO. The harmful use of alcohol is one of the leading risk factors for population health worldwide and has a direct impact on many health-related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including those for maternal and child health, infectious diseases (HIV, viral hepatitis, tuberculosis), non-communicable diseases and mental health, injuries and poisonings. In 2016, the harmful use of alcohol resulted in some 3 million deaths (5.3 per cent of all deaths) worldwide and 132.6 million disabilityadjusted life years (DALYs). Mortality resulting from alcohol consumption is higher than that caused by diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV/ AIDS and diabetes. In 2019 at the launch of North Eat Artist Network (NEAN), an initiative under Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989DHD (District hospital Dimapur) Sr. Psychiatrist Dr Kezo averred that alcohol-related ailments in the State could be viewed as “evergreen disease” due to the huge number of patients that DHD received all through the year, adding 50% of indoor patients suffered from ailments due to excess consumption of alcohol. He even stated that consumption of liquor by alcoholics peaked when they were between the ages of 18 and 60 years. In Nagaland, alcohol adulteration and its regular intake have literally wrecked one of the members of the family, eventually leading the entire family to suffer the damage formed by an individual. An alcoholic can be any one from the family members, however in most cases the father is the victim. An alcoholic father who disillusioned the hope of his wife, sons and daughters. The wife heart leads astray and in despair, the sons dream shattered and disconsolation accompanies resembling a shadow creature his entire voyage, the daughters adrift in the midst of the deteriorating bridge with no fatherly figure to secure her. This intense feeling creates a spider web like structure making it dif-
ficult for them to break out from the affix. The children then proceeds to partake in any unwanted substance abuse .The strong children survives but not everyone has the valor to fight the unending battle and thereby leads them wide of the mark into sub human disguise. In most of the cases the victim becomes encumbered to the family and all the expenses meant for the future savings retire in vain with money liquid consumed for the victims dilapidating health leading to death at long last. The regular alcoholic in takers should therefore possess the habit of minimizing their drinking habits or less leave it discharged in order to eschew from this infamous and inherent encounter. Recently the DNSU (Dimapur Naga Students Union) with arms shield armor pressurized the Government of Nagaland to check the illegal flow of liquor, likewise CNTC(Central Nagaland Tribes)in supplement applauded DNSU initiative and call for the formation of the committee to look into the affairs of the counterfeit alcohol and implored scrutiny for the procurement of their trade licenses. Thence the Commissioner of Excise Dimapur formed a committee to be headed by the Deputy Commissioner (Narcotic Cell) S Chanlei Angh to eye into the issue of illegal liquor outlets in Dimapur. This ultimatum and the formation of the committee looks quite promising but the action orientated still remains a questionnaire. Article 47 of the Indian constitution speech about enhancing public health as among its primary duties and in particular endeavor to bring prohibition of intoxicating drinks and drugs which are injurious to health. This provision regards counterfeit alcohol beverages as void. The Government of Nagaland should infact action orient these provision in order to ensure healthy and better access of alcohol drinking and establish protocol to outwit the pragmatic fake alcohol or more people is likely to die of adulteration in the
immediate future. There is ten to one the essential of indispensable economically packaging solutions to steer a vital role in swaying the counterfeiting and liquor adulteration. The use of aseptic packaging becomes extremely requisite. Karnataka is the perfect paradigm to use aseptic packaging followed by UP, west Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Union territories of Puducherry and Daman and Diu. The Government of Nagaland should also follow these proceedings as aseptic packaging ensures hygienic and tamper proof (anti counterfeit) and more lighter and less fragile. It also allows the dual edge for brand owners and consumers both to identify safe and reliable liquor brands at the point of sale. Indian government initiative of introducing HEAL(Holographic Excise Adhesive Labels) was another stepping stone to combat counterfeiting and adulteration in the liquor segment. This was first adopted by Tamil Nadu. Today more than 17 states excise department are utilizing HEAL. This has not only
let fall the hooch catastrophe and replication but has supplementary elevated the revenue collection in states. The government of Nagaland should henceforth uphold this HEAL strategy to evade alcohol adulteration. Adulteration plus or minus, there has been suffice adversity incurred by the exceeding alcohol. People committing crimes under the influence of alcohol, car mishap, rape incidents, pilferages and many more. The only feasible method is to conscious drink wise and fight shy of all unnecessary calamities before alcohol circulates in men the unrestrained madness. The best doable modus operandi is to leave the individual to decide his choice and make him consciously sensitized about the harmful impact of alcohol and its stake. In drawing inferences counterfeit alcohol should be ceased by all means for the betterment and welfare of the people. “Alcohol makes everything better, until it makes everything worse. “- Caroline Knapp. Tokato K Sumi, New Colony Zunheboto

Sir,
Gross inequality existing in our society
In the current Covid-induced crisis, there are families who cannot afford smartphones, let alone laptops. We all know that and we try and help as much as we can but we cannot cover the rest of the people who are being left out. It aches to see some of the kids in my neighborhood wanting to learn and experience what online classes are like. Who wouldn’t want to see their friends and teachers – those familiar faces that made their lives so much fun before this pandemic and learn new things together like the good old times? Students of government schools are still unable to attend online classes and they are totally dependent on the government for help. In such a situation, the government needs to act swiftly so that such students at least get smartphones to attend online classes. It should be the duty of the government to do what is required for the people, especially those who are economically deprived because that is what democracy is. Sentimenla Pongen, PR Hill, Kohima

S&P retains India’s GDP forecast at -9%
New Delhi, Nov 30 (PTI): S&P Global Ratings on Monday retained its forecast of 9 per cent contraction in the Indian economy for the current fiscal, saying even though there are now upside risks to growth but it will wait for more signs that COVID infections have stabilised or fallen. S&P, in its report on Asia Pacific, projected the Indian economy to grow at 10 per cent in the next fiscal. “We retain our growth forecast of negative 9 per cent in fiscal 2020-2021 and 10 per cent in fiscal 20212022. While there are now upside risks to growth due to a faster recovery in population mobility and household spending, the pandemic is not fully under control. “We will wait for more signs that infections have stabilised or fallen, together with high-frequency activity data for the fiscal year third
quarter, before changing our forecasts,” S&P said. According to the official data released last week, Indian economy recovered faster than expected in the September quarter as a pickup in manufacturing helped GDP clock a lower contraction of 7.5 per cent. Indian economy had contracted 23.9 per cent in April-June. The RBI in October projected India’s economy to contract by 9.5 per cent this fiscal. It said the indus-
trial sector is leading and the output is now above levels from a year ago, helped by rising demand for consumer goods. Investment recovered faster than consumption in the second quarter, partly due to resumption of stalled projects. The private sector drove the recovery as spending resumed and households and firms moved more toward normalised activity. S&P said inflation should ease from recent
highs, albeit gradually. “We project that headline consumer price inflation just above the mid-point of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) forecast a range of 2 to 6 per cent through 2021. One-off factors should ease, including food-supply disruptions and supply constraints related to earlier lockdowns. But the passthrough to core inflation, currently near 6 per cent, suggests that inflation persistence remains a challenge,” it said. S&P said it does not expect much fiscal easing in its projections. “Past action has targeted low-income households, with substantial welfare effects, but a broader fiscal effort has been lacking. We do not see this changing. At the same time, the RBI will be constrained from cutting rates and we anticipate rates will start normalising upward from 2021 onwards,” it added.
Gold down Rs 142, silver declines by Rs 701 New Delhi, Nov 30 (PTI): Gold prices fell Rs 142 to Rs 47,483 per 10 gram in the national capital on Monday on a weak global trend, according to HDFC Securities. In the previous trade, the precious metal had closed at Rs 47,625 per 10 gram. Silver prices also declined Rs 701 to Rs 57,808 per kilogram from Rs 58,509 per kilogram in the previous trade. In the international market, gold was trading lower at USD 1,781.50 per ounce, while silver was quoting flat at USD 22.29 per ounce. “Gold prices continued downside on Monday as optimism on vaccine has boosted investment sentiment towards riskier assets,” HDFC Securities Senior Analyst (Commodities) Tapan Patel said.

definite stir in Mon district and seized three government vehicles. The union also announced that as per the new directive of ENSF, it would support the second phase of the agitation by boycotting the Statehood Day celebrations in Mon district on December 1 and the virtual Hornbill Festival. KSU asserted that it would fully support ENSF’s directive until the government fulfilled the federation’s demand. This was stated in a press release by union’s president Bumang Phaiba and assistant general secretary Nokpho Wangsha. In Noklak, Khiamniungan Students’ Union (KSU) successfully imposed Phase-I of indefinite agitation, which kicked off at 6am. KSU president P Hatho presented in detail the charter of demands placed before the state government during the formal
programme. KSU said that no vehicle was seized under Khiamniungan jurisdiction on day one and affirmed to stand firm until the demands were met. In Tuensang, the Yimchungrü Akherü Arihako (YAA) enforced phase-I indefinite democratic agitation under its jurisdiction starting from 6am on Monday. YAA officials along with volunteers monitored movement of government registered vehicles at ADC HQs Shamator and Pungro. Joe Biden fractures foot while playing with his dog
WASHINGTON, NOV 30 (PTI): US President-elect Joe Biden has hairline fractures in his mid-foot and will likely require a walking boot for several weeks, his doctor said, after the Democratic leader slipped while playing with his dog. Biden twisted his ankle on Saturday when he slipped while playing with Major, his 2-year-old German shepherd. Biden, who celebrated his 78th birthday on November 20, is set to be the oldest president in US history when he is inaugurated on January 20. “Initial X-rays did not show any obvious fracture, but his clinical exam warranted more detailed imaging,” Biden’s physician Dr Kevin O’Connor said in a statement on Sunday. “Follow-up CT scan confirmed hairline (small) fractures of President-elect Biden’s lateral and intermediate cuneiform bones, which are in the midfoot. It is anticipated that he will likely require a walking boot for several weeks,” said O’Connor, Director (Executive Medicine) at The George Washington Medical Faculty Associates, on Biden’s imaging
China’s defence minister meets Pak Army chief ISLAMABAD, NOV 30 (PTI): China’s Defence Minister Gen Wei Fenghe on Monday held talks with Pakistan Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and discussed regional security issues and signed an agreement to deepen defence cooperation between the all-weather allies. “During the meeting, matters of mutual interest, regional security and enhanced bilateral defence collaboration were discussed,” said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of Pakistan’s Army, after the meeting between the two generals. “An MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) was also signed for enhancement of defence cooperation between both the Armies,” the statement said. The details of the MoU were not shared. Gen Bajwa thanked Gen Wei for China’s unwavering support to Pakistan on all key issues at regional and international forums, saying that the Pakistan Army greatly values the “time-tested and brotherly relations” with China.

results. He was examined by an orthopedist “out of an abundance of caution”. To avoid disrupting regularly scheduled appointments on Monday, arrangements were made for Biden to receive an X-ray and then an additional CT scan on Sunday afternoon, with the expected delays involved when opening closed offices and giving personnel time to set up, a Biden spokesperson said. President Donald Trump, a Republican, who has not yet conceded the November 3 presidential election, tweeted, “Get well soon!” Biden’s last health record was released by Dr O’Connor in December 2019. The physician said Biden is “healthy, vigor-
ous” and “fit” to be the president. Biden does not use tobacco or drink alcohol and exercises five days a week. He is taking blood thinners and medication for acid reflux, cholesterol and seasonal allergies, said the health report. “Biden did spend a good deal of time in the sun in his youth. He has had several localised, nonmelanoma skin cancers removed with Mohs surgery. These lesions were completely excised, with clear margins. He continues to receive close dermatologic surveillance,” it said. The Bidens adopted Major, a rescue dog, in 2018. He adopted his other dog, Champ, another German shepherd, in 2008 shortly after the presidential election. The Bidens have said they plan to bring both dogs with them to the White House. They are also rumoured to be adding a cat to the family. Trump has not had any pets in the White House during his time in office, the first president without resident animals in roughly 100 years, according to White House historians.

Canada extends intl travel restrictions O T T AWA , N OV 3 0 (IANS): Canada has announced an extension of restrictions on international travel in an effort to prevent the further spread of the novel coronavirus amid an ongoing second wave of the pandemic in the country. In a statement issued on Sunday, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair announced that travel restrictions on US citizens would be extended until December 21, and curbs on people arriving from other countries would be extended until January 21, 2021, Xinhua news agency reported. The restrictions, which were brought forward on March 16, ban most foreign nationals from entering Canada for non-essential travel. There are a number of exceptions for immediate family members of citizens, essential workers, seasonal workers, caregivers and international students. The latest extension brings the timing of international travel restrictions in alignment with those governing the Canada-US land border. Previously, international restrictions expired on the last day of each

month while the CanadaUS border restrictions expired on the 21st. Both have been regularly extended since March. “ T h e g ove r n m e n t continues to evaluate the travel restrictions and prohibitions as well as the requirement to quarantine or isolate on an ongoing basis to ensure Canadians remain healthy and safe,” the minister said in the statement. “The ability to align US and international travel extension dates, as well as the mandatory isolation order, beginning on January 21, 2021, will enable the government to communicate any travel extensions or changes as quickly as possible and provide certainty for Canadians, US and international travellers.” Canada has so far reported a total of 3,70,278 Covid-19 cases and 12,032 deaths.
Novel coronavirus may enter brain via nose, study says BERLIN, NOV 30 (PTI): The novel coronavirus may enter the brain of people through the nose, according to a study published on Monday that may help explain some of the neurological symptoms observed in COVID-19 patients, and inform diagnosis and measures to prevent infection. The research, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, noted that SARS-CoV-2 not only affects the respiratory tract but also impacts the central nervous system (CNS), resulting in neurological symptoms such as loss of smell, taste, headache, fatigue and nausea. Although recent research has described the presence of viral RNA in the brain and cerebrospinal fluid, it remains unclear where the virus enters and how it is distributed within the brain. The researchers from Charite–Universitatsmedizin Berlin, Germany examined the nasopharnyx -- the upper part of the throat that connects to the nasal cavity -- a likely first site of viral infection and replication, and the brains of 33 patients -- 22 males and 11 females -- who died with COVID-19. The median age at the

time of death was 71.6 years, and the time from onset of COVID-19 symptoms to death was a median of 31 days, they said. The researchers said that they found the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA, the genetic material of the virus, and protein in the brain and nasopharynx, adding intact virus particles were also detected in the nasopharynx. The highest levels of viral RNA were found in the olfactory mucous membrane, they said. According to the researchers, the disease duration was inversely correlated with the amount of detectable virus, indicating that higher SARS-CoV-2 RNA levels were found in cases
with shorter disease duration. The team also found SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in certain types of cells within the olfactory mucous layer, where it may exploit the proximity of endothelial and nervous tissue to gain entry to the brain. I n s o m e p a t i e n t s, SARS-CoV-2 spike protein was found in cells expressing markers of neurons, suggesting that olfactory sensory neurons may be infected, as well as in the brain areas that receive smell and taste signals, the researchers said. SARS-CoV-2 was also found in other areas of the nervous system, including the medulla oblongata -- the primary respiratory and cardiovascular control centre of the brain, they said.
‘Weapon used in scientist’s killing was made in Israel’ Lahore is world’s most polluted city
DUBAI, NOV 30 (AGENCIES): Iran’s English-language Press TV reported on Monday that the weapon used in the killing of prominent Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh last week was made in Israel, the Islamic Republic’s longtime enemy. “The weapons collected from the site of the terrorist act (where Fakhrizadeh was assassinated) bear the logo and specifications of the Israeli military industry,” an unnamed source told Press TV. In Jerusalem, there was no immediate reply from Israeli officials contacted for comment on the report. Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency said on Sunday that Fakhrizadeh was killed by a machine gun operated by remote control, while the Arabic language Al Alam TV reported that the weapons used in Fakhrizadeh’s killing were “controlled by satellite”. Witnesses on Friday told state TV that there were gunmen on the ground. Speaking before the Press TV report, Israeli intelligence minister Eli Cohen told radio station
role in Fakhrizadeh’s killing is proven. However, Iran’s rulers are aware of daunting military and political difficulties in attacking Israel. Such an attack would also complicate any effort by U.S. President-elect Joe Biden to revive detente with Tehran after he takes office on Jan. 20.
L A H O R E , N OV 3 0 (IANS): Lahore has again topped the list of the most polluted city in the world, according to air pollution data released by the US Air Quality Index on Monday. According to the index, Lahore reported a particulate matter (PM) rating of 423, reports Geo TV. Lahore is not the only
Pakistani city to feature in the top 10 list for the worst air quality. Pakistan’s largest city of Karachi ranked at 7 on the AQI. Lahore’s AQI fell in the range of 301 and higher, which has been classified as “hazardous”. To reduce the smog, the Provincial Disaster
Management Authority (PDMA) in Punjab has to date sealed 613 brick kilns, 2,148 industries and impounded 8,579 vehicles. The PDMA has also arrested 478 people. In the list, New Delhi ranked second with a PM of 229, while Kathmandu was the third-worst city with a PM of 178.

Fakhrizadeh, who had little public profile in Iran but had been named by Israel as a prime player in what it says is Iran’s nuclear weapons quest, was killed on Friday when he was ambushed on a highway near Tehran and his car sprayed with bullets. Iran began Fakhrizadeh’s burial in a cemetery in northern Tehran on Monday, state TV reported, as the defence minister promised that the Islamic Republic would retaliate for his killing. Iran’s clerical and military rulers have blamed
Israel, for Fakhrizadeh’s killing, raising the threat of a new confrontation with the West and Israel in the remaining weeks of Donald Trump’s presidency. “unrest” at the Mahara prison located about 15 kilometers north of Colombo and prison officials took steps to control the situation. The incident comes as pandemic-related unrest has been growing in Sri Lanka’s overcrowded prisons. Inmates have staged protests in recent weeks in several prisons as the number of confirmed COVID-19
positive cases spiked in the country’s overcrowded jails. “The incident was started by a set of remand prisoners when they tried to force open a door and escape following which the authorities had to use force,” Rohana said. He said during the entire incident at least 37 more, including two jailors, were injured and all of them were
transferred to the nearby Ragama hospital. The residents near the prison said smoke was coming out of the premises due to fire. Prisons authorities said the rioters had set fire to the kitchen and a record room of the prison. An attempt by the rioting inmates to take the jailors hostage was thwarted, officials said. Rohana said the detainees wanted them to be transferred elsewhere as the Mahara prison has detected over 175 COVID-19 infections among the inmates. From the mid of this month, prisons across the island went into a lockdown as infections were reported both among inmates and guards. Over 1,000 cases have been reported among those connected to prisons. In a similar unrest last week, an inmate was killed. Another prisoner died in March. Sri Lankan prisons are highly congested with more than 26,000 inmates crowded in facilities with the capacity of 10,000.

A
cademy Award-winning music composer AR Rahman on Monday was announced as the ambassador for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ (BAFTA) ‘Breakthrough Initiative’. The initiative, supported by Netflix, aims to identify, celebrate, and support up to five talents working in film, games, or TV in India. Rahman said he is thrilled to work with BAFTA to discover talent that the country has to offer. “This is a unique op-
portunity for promising artists to be supported by a world-renowned organisation, to not only make connections with other talented creatives across the world but to be mentored by BAFTA-winners and nominees. “I am looking forward to seeing the brilliant talent chosen from India to be showcased on a global stage,” the 53-yearold composer said in a statement. The flagship new talent initiative, applications for which are now open, is part of BAFTA’s year-
round work to support new talent, operating alongside their awards ceremonies worldwide. According to a press statement, BAFTA Breakthrough India will help facilitate the development of relationships between British talent and India’s homegrown creatives. Amanda Berry OBE, Chief Executive of BAFTA, said Rahman shares the team’s passion for identifying and nurturing new talent and they were grateful for his support. “He is well positioned to support the initiative, with his broad spectrum of work drawing recognition across Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu films, which will help BAFTA to appeal to a wide section of the industry,” Berry added. Dolly Parton ‘cried all night’ over Elvis Presley dispute
D
olly Parton “cried all night long” after rejecting Elvis Presley’s request to record a cover of ‘I Will Always Love You’. The 74-year-old singer released the song in 1974, but she declined Elvis’ request to record a cover amid a dispute over money. In The Big Issue’s Letter To My Younger Self, she shared: “I’d been invited down to the studio to meet Elvis and be there when he sang my song. That was the
most exciting thing that had ever happened to me. Who doesn’t love Elvis? “But then Colonel (Tom Parker, Elvis’ manager) called me the afternoon before the session and said ‘You do know we have to have at least half the publishing on any song that Elvis records?’ “And I said ‘No, I did not know that’. He said ‘Well, it’s just a rule’. So I said ‘Well, it’s not my rule’. And I cried all night pointed.” Despite the dispute, long, ’cause I was so disap-
Dolly insisted she didn’t have any issues with the late icon. She wrote: “It wasn’t Elvis, I loved Elvis. And I’m sure he was as disappointed as I was because he had it all worked up and ready to go. I know he loved the song.” Dolly wishes she could still speak with Elvis to officially end their dispute. Asked who she would choose to have her “last conversation” with, Dolly said: “I’d probably talk about ‘I Will Always Love You’ and say ‘Hey, I bet you
were as disappointed as I was about all that and I still dream about you singing that song’. “Matter of fact, I even wrote a song called ‘I Dreamed About Elvis Last Night’ and I had an Elvis soundalike sing it with me and we actually sing ‘I will always love you’ in it. “And one day, I’m going to put that track out. So I think that I’d talk to Elvis, and just clear that up with him.” (Contactmusic)

fter being snubbed at the Grammy nominations this year, American singersongwriter Halsey has called out the nomination process, criticising it for being about more than just releasing quality music or cultural impact. “I’ve been thinking and wanted to choose my words carefully because a lot of people have extended sympathy and apology to me since the Grammy nominations. The Grammys are an elusive process,” she wrote on Instagram Stories. “It can often be about
behind the scenes private performances, knowing the right people, campaigning through the grapevine, with the right handshakes and ‘bribes’ that can be just ambiguous enough to pass as ‘not bribes’. And if you get that far, it’s about committing to exclusive TV performances and making sure you help the Academy make their millions in advertising on the night of the show,” she added. The singer continued: “Perhaps sometimes it is (!!!) but it’s not always about the music or quality or culture. Just wanted to get that off my chest. @ theweeknd deserves better, and Manic did too (woman shrugging emoji) perhaps it’s unbecoming of me to say so but I can’t care anymore. Spurs back on top after Chelsea stalemate
Spurs kept hold of top spot in the Premier League with a goalless draw at the Blues on Sunday.
L ONDON, N ov 3 0 (Reuters): Tottenham Hotspur returned to the top of the Premier League as they ground out a 0-0 draw at Chelsea on Sunday but there was more woe for north London rivals Arsenal who suffered a fifth defeat in their opening 10 matches. When Spurs briefly led the table before the international break it was pointed out that their next run of fixtures would give a better
indication of whether they are title contenders. After last week’s 2-0 home win against Manchester City, their disciplined display at Chelsea to earn a point has perhaps persuaded a few more that they have a shot. “If we’re contenders then they have to be contenders,” Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said after his side missed the chance to move top with a victory. Timo Werner had a
goal ruled out for Chelsea in the first half and Tammy Abraham should have done better with a header after the break but Tottenham, especially in the first half, always looked capable of snatching a goal. They are now unbeaten in nine league games since an opening-day defeat at home to Everton and have kept three consecutive clean sheets. However, manager Jose Mourinho contines to downplay his

ISL: NE, Goa encounter end in 1-1 draw
Panaji, Nov 30 (Agencies): NorthEast United’s unbeaten run continued as they managed to hold FC Goa to a 1-1 draw in an Indian Super League (ISL) clash on Monday at the Fatorda Stadium. According to goal.com, Idrissa Sylla handed the Highlanders the lead in the 40th minute from the penalty spot but Igor Angulo’s strike in the 43rd minute secured FC Goa a point. Juan Ferrando made three changes to the FC Goa lineup which lost 0-1 to Mumbai City. Aibanbha Dohling, Jorge Ortiz and Brandon Fernandes came in for James Donachie, Redeem Tlang and Len Doungel. Gerard Nus made five changes to NorthEast United starting eleven as Provat Lakra, Lalrempuia Fanai, Idrissa Sylla, Luis Machado and Britto PM replaced Ashutosh Mehta, Federico Gallego, Kwesi Appiah, Ninthoinganba Meetei and Rakesh Pradhan. The first half turned out to be an evenly poised contest with end-to-end action. While FC Goa enjoyed more possession, NorthEast United depended on quick counter-attacks down the flanks.

Asian silver-winner Ashish Kumar (75kg) and Asian Games bronze-winner Satish Kumar (+91kg) have been included in a group which already featured Amit Panghal (52kg), Manish Kaushik (63kg), and Vikas Krishan (69kg) among the Tokyo-bound. kick. The hosts came back into the game quickly. In the 43rd minute, Igor Angulo’s clever movement inside the box allowed him to guide Brandon Fernandes’ low cross into the net. Brandon did well to beat Provat Lakra on the left flank with clever footwork before whipping in the cross. Gerard Nus decided to consolidate his backline at the very beginning of the second half as Ashutosh Mehta was brought in in
the right-back position in place of Provat Lakra who had a shaky first half. The Spaniard completely shut shop as NorthEast defended in numbers in the entire second half. The Gaurs went all guns blazing on the Highlanders but failed to break their defensive organisation. The only major chance Goa got in the second half was in the 84th minute when Alberto Noguera shot hit the upright. Noguera received a
pass from Jorge Ortiz from the right flank, took a touch and unleashed a shot with his left-foot which unfortunately did not go in. NorthEast moved up to the second position on the league table with two draws and a win in their first three matches, while Goa remained in the bottom half with no wins yet.

Buenos Aires, Nov 30 (IANS): Diego Maradona’s personal doctor is under investigation for possible manslaughter after the football legend’s death last week, Argentine prosecutors have said. Police raided the home and private clinic of Leopoldo Luque on Sunday to determine whether there was negligence on the part of the physician, reports Xinhua news agency. Prosecutors said the search was ordered by a judge following preliminary investigations, which included evidence from Maradona’s daughters Dalma, Giannina and Jana. “By virtue of the evidence that was collected, it was considered necessary to request searches at the home and office of doctor Leopoldo Luque,” a statement from a local prosecutor’s office said. Argentine state news agency Telam said investigators were trying to establish if Maradona had received 24-hour care from medical staff in the days before his death, one of the conditions of his discharge from hospital on November 12.
New Delhi, Nov 30 (IANS): Indian cricket is massively important to the cricket world and the International Cricket Council (ICC) recognises this fact, and any “internal squabbles” between the two important bodies can be sorted out amicably, said new ICC chairman Gregor John Barclay on Monday. “India is a massively important part of world cricket, a hugely contributing member of the ICC. From time to time, like all families, we have internal squabbles or whatever, but I think that India recognises its importance to not just the ICC but to world cricket and certainly the ICC needs Indian cricket,” Barclay, who took the ICC reins on November 24, said in a virtual media interaction. “So, we navigate our way through any differences that there might be from time to time. But, by and large, India was made a full member in the same year as New Zealand was, back in 1926. So, we both
