Govt fails to end deadlock with farmers

NEW DELHI, DEC 5 (PTI): Talks between the government and protesting farmers remained inconclusive on Saturday even after five rounds of discussions as union leaders stuck to their demand for the repeal of the new farm laws and went on a ‘maun vrat’ seeking a clear ‘yes or no’ reply, forcing the Centre to call for another meeting on December 9 to resolve the deadlock. After more than four hours of discussions with three union ministers and senior officials, farmer leaders said the government sought more time for internal consultations to present a final proposal in the next meeting to resolve the issue. Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, however, said the government wanted some firm suggestions from the 40 farmer leaders present in the meeting on their key concerns and hoped that a resolution would be reached with their cooperation. The representatives of thousands of agitating farmers, who are sitting on various borders of the national capital since November 26, said their protest will continue and their call for a ‘Bharat

Bandh’ on December 8 that has also been supported by trade unions and various other organisations would be observed with full force. Tomar appealed to the unions to send the elderly, women and children back to their homes from the protest sites due to cold weather conditions. Addressing media after the meeting, the agriculture minister said the government has assured the farmers that procurement at minimum support price will continue and mandis will be

strengthened. Farmers have threatened to intensify their agitation and block more roads leading to the national capital if the government does not accept their demands. The three farm laws have been presented by the government as major reforms in the agriculture sector that will remove the middlemen and allow farmers to sell anywhere in the country. However, the protesting farmers have expressed apprehension that the new

laws would pave the way for eliminating the safety cushion of MSP and scrap the mandis, leaving them at the mercy of big corporates. The Centre has maintained MSP and mandi systems would continue and would be rather further improved and strengthened. After the meeting, BKU Ekta (Ugrahan) president Joginder Singh Ugrahan told PTI the government offered various amendments in the laws but we want the laws to be repealed completely.

DIMAPUR, DEC 5 (NPN): Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) has criticized Nagaland Governor RN Ravi for his Statehood Day speech that purportedly ignored Naga women as equal stakeholders, in the Naga political process. In a statement, NMA expressed “deep displeasure” over the Nagaland governor RN Ravi’s recent statement, adding “he is confused on his delicate role of peacemaker and Interlocutor of the longest Naga freedom struggle in the North east region.” NMA urged the Prime Minister of India to ensure

that there were “measured words of peace and respect” for the Naga people including Naga women from the office of the Raj Bhavan in Nagaland. It reiterated that never in the history of Nagas have they seen “such intolerance and arrogance from Indian leaders, as reflected in this instant case.” NMA said the language of peace began with mutual respect, that “must be maintained by the governor, who is not only the Head of state, but involved in bringing Peace to our Naga areas.” NMA quoted the Governor’s speech when he

said that the “traditional village institutions and tribal bodies are the primary stakeholders in the Naga political issue.” NMA said this “unfortunately, shows his complete ignorance, in not realizing, that Naga women are equal stakeholders, in the Naga political process.” It pointed out that over the years, Naga women walked the talk, trudging into deep jungles and areas untrodden by many traditional village institutions and few tribe leaders, in search of “our armed brothers for peace.”

have to work together hand in hand so that any issues which crop up should be settled amicably. The delegation from Nagaland also included advisor Horticulture and Border Affairs Mhathung Yanthan while state BJP functionaries attended the meeting as emissaries of Nagaland chief minister. Will never ask for Christmas, New Year donation: NSCN (R) DIMAPUR, DEC 5 (NPN): NSCN (Reformation) has reminded all concerned that as maintained earlier, the NSCN (R) “will continue to uphold the sanctity of Christian principles and will never seek or ask for any Christmas & New Year’s donations and this year too is no exception.” NSCN (R) through its MIP said that the organization, like any other Christian, too is bounded by the ‘Christian principles’ and pointed out that “Christmas/New Year is a time

for giving and not taking, and also to share equal Joy, Love and Peace, regardless of any Social Inequities as in, Rich or Poor, Strong or Weak, Old or Young”. It said that the NSCN (R) cadres/members are reminded of these principles, from time to time, during “remedial and political classes”, adding any such incidents were most likely to be imposters, masquerading as NSCN (R). It warned that if any individual/character or perchance, or

any cadres are found involved in such sordid activities and bringing bad disrepute, they “will be strictly dealt with an iron hand”. In this regard, NSCN (R) has requested all concerned to immediately report any such activities to the ‘competent authority(s)’ without any compunction. Further, NSCN (R) wished all a “Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. May this season’s greeting bring ‘Good tidings, Love, Peace and Happiness’ to one and all.”
