Govt fails to end deadlock with farmers
NEW DELHI, DEC 5 (PTI): Talks between the government and protesting farmers remained inconclusive on Saturday even after five rounds of discussions as union leaders stuck to their demand for the repeal of the new farm laws and went on a ‘maun vrat’ seeking a clear ‘yes or no’ reply, forcing the Centre to call for another meeting on December 9 to resolve the deadlock. After more than four hours of discussions with three union ministers and senior officials, farmer leaders said the government sought more time for internal consultations to present a final proposal in the next meeting to resolve the issue. Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, however, said the government wanted some firm suggestions from the 40 farmer leaders present in the meeting on their key concerns and hoped that a resolution would be reached with their cooperation. The representatives of thousands of agitating farmers, who are sitting on various borders of the national capital since November 26, said their protest will continue and their call for a ‘Bharat

Bandh’ on December 8 that has also been supported by trade unions and various other organisations would be observed with full force. Tomar appealed to the unions to send the elderly, women and children back to their homes from the protest sites due to cold weather conditions. Addressing media after the meeting, the agriculture minister said the government has assured the farmers that procurement at minimum support price will continue and mandis will be
strengthened. Farmers have threatened to intensify their agitation and block more roads leading to the national capital if the government does not accept their demands. The three farm laws have been presented by the government as major reforms in the agriculture sector that will remove the middlemen and allow farmers to sell anywhere in the country. However, the protesting farmers have expressed apprehension that the new
laws would pave the way for eliminating the safety cushion of MSP and scrap the mandis, leaving them at the mercy of big corporates. The Centre has maintained MSP and mandi systems would continue and would be rather further improved and strengthened. After the meeting, BKU Ekta (Ugrahan) president Joginder Singh Ugrahan told PTI the government offered various amendments in the laws but we want the laws to be repealed completely.

DIMAPUR, DEC 5 (NPN): Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) has criticized Nagaland Governor RN Ravi for his Statehood Day speech that purportedly ignored Naga women as equal stakeholders, in the Naga political process. In a statement, NMA expressed “deep displeasure” over the Nagaland governor RN Ravi’s recent statement, adding “he is confused on his delicate role of peacemaker and Interlocutor of the longest Naga freedom struggle in the North east region.” NMA urged the Prime Minister of India to ensure
that there were “measured words of peace and respect” for the Naga people including Naga women from the office of the Raj Bhavan in Nagaland. It reiterated that never in the history of Nagas have they seen “such intolerance and arrogance from Indian leaders, as reflected in this instant case.” NMA said the language of peace began with mutual respect, that “must be maintained by the governor, who is not only the Head of state, but involved in bringing Peace to our Naga areas.” NMA quoted the Governor’s speech when he
said that the “traditional village institutions and tribal bodies are the primary stakeholders in the Naga political issue.” NMA said this “unfortunately, shows his complete ignorance, in not realizing, that Naga women are equal stakeholders, in the Naga political process.” It pointed out that over the years, Naga women walked the talk, trudging into deep jungles and areas untrodden by many traditional village institutions and few tribe leaders, in search of “our armed brothers for peace.”

The delegation from Nagaland also included advisor Horticulture and Border Affairs Mhathung Yanthan while state BJP functionaries attended the meeting as emissaries of Nagaland chief minister. Will never ask for Christmas, New Year donation: NSCN (R) DIMAPUR, DEC 5 (NPN): NSCN (Reformation) has reminded all concerned that as maintained earlier, the NSCN (R) “will continue to uphold the sanctity of Christian principles and will never seek or ask for any Christmas & New Year’s donations and this year too is no exception.” NSCN (R) through its MIP said that the organization, like any other Christian, too is bounded by the ‘Christian principles’ and pointed out that “Christmas/New Year is a time
for giving and not taking, and also to share equal Joy, Love and Peace, regardless of any Social Inequities as in, Rich or Poor, Strong or Weak, Old or Young”. It said that the NSCN (R) cadres/members are reminded of these principles, from time to time, during “remedial and political classes”, adding any such incidents were most likely to be imposters, masquerading as NSCN (R). It warned that if any individual/character or perchance, or
any cadres are found involved in such sordid activities and bringing bad disrepute, they “will be strictly dealt with an iron hand”. In this regard, NSCN (R) has requested all concerned to immediately report any such activities to the ‘competent authority(s)’ without any compunction. Further, NSCN (R) wished all a “Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. May this season’s greeting bring ‘Good tidings, Love, Peace and Happiness’ to one and all.”

KOHIMA, DEC 5 (NPN): Principal director, School Education, Shanavas C said that education being in the concurrent list, state should have its own strategy in making children achieve literacy and numeracy by 2025. He was speaking at the panel discussion on National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 organised by Nagaland Education Association in collaboration with Directorate of School Education at directorate, Saturday. He said that the union ministry was in the process of working out the NEP,
but since India was a quasi federal country, “there cannot be a single size fit for all policy”. Pointing out that there was huge disparity in learning between students in rural and urban areas, he said that if the aim was to achieve literacy and numeracy by 2025, the gaps were faltering in the education system. He said that the NEP focuses on literacy and numeracy to achieve a universal foundation by 2025 where the main focus is on early childhood care and education. Shanavas said that however, early childhood care and education implementation was a challenge

The BJP-led ruling alliance’s Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) is contesting alone and both the parties were engaged in a bitter campaign with the usage of many unparliamentary words by the leaders of the two parties. Hagrama Mohilary of the BPF led the campaign for his party, which is ruling the BTC since 2005. On the other hand, BJP’s North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) Convenor and state minister Himanta Biswa Sarma carried out an aggressive campaign across the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), targeting mostly Mohilary. pay his dues, which caused mental stress to Naik. He first strangulated his mother, thinking that she might land in trouble as she was also a partner in his business,” it said. Naik later wrote a suicide note and then hanged himself, the charge sheet added. Police said that they have relied on the purported suicide note as the “dying declaration”. Naik’s handwriting has been matched with the writing in the suicide note and forensic report indicated that he was not under pressure while writing it, police said. Police had earlier said that in his suicide note, Naik, who owned Concorde Designs Pvt Ltd, had claimed that he was ending his life due to non-payment of dues by Goswami, Firoze Sheikh of IcastX/
Skimedia and Nitish Sarda of Smartworks. Police said that as per the note, the three firms owed Naik’s company Rs 83 lakh, Rs four crore and Rs 55 lakh respectively. The court will take cognisance of the charge sheet on December 16, Rahul Agarwal, advocate for one of the accused, said on Saturday. The accused trio has been charged under IPC sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 109 (punishment for abetment) and 34 (common intention). As many as 65 persons were named as witnesses in the charge sheet that runs into 1,914 pages. Police have listed statements of family members and staff of Naik, call data records, and information retrieved from electronic devices as evidence in the case. In May this year, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had announced that he has ordered a fresh probe in the case after a complaint by Adnya Naik, daughter of the architect Anvay Naik. Goswami, Sheikh and Sarda were arrested by Alibaug police on November 4 in the case, but they got bail from the Supreme Court on November 11.
Hyderabadis give fractured mandate; TRS single largest party
Hyderabad, Dec 5 (IANS): Elections to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) threw up a hung house as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made big inroads to deny the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) a clear majority. TRS emerged as the single largest party with 55 seats in the 150-member municipal body while the BJP won 48 seats, signalling its emergence as a dominant political force in the state. Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), which retained 44 seats, has emerged as the kingmaker. TRS and MIM are likely to enter into a power sharing arrangement to rule the municipal body. The Congress could win just two seats. Owning the responsibility for the party’s disastrous performance, state Congress chief N. Uttam Kumar Reddy announced his resignation from the poston Friday evening. The results came as a big shock to the TRS, which had won landslide majority in 2016 with 99 seats. With just four seats in the previous elections, the BJP improved its performance
TRS won 55, BJP-48 seats, MIM-44.
manifold. Result in one division (Neredmet) was withheld as the number of ballots with ‘distinguished mark’ other than ‘swastik’ was more than the majority of TRS. The ruling party was leading by 505 seats but ballots with ‘distinguished mark’ other than ‘swastik’ was 544. The result will be subject to High Court order in the matter. The counting day saw several twists and turns in the fortunes of the parties. Though TRS appeared set to retain power with lead in 70 divisions at around 4 p.m., the scene changed subsequently with the BJP racing ahead in divisions where it was locked in neck-and-neck battle with the TRS. The newly elected corporators and 52 ex-officio
members will elect the Mayor. Since TRS has majority ex-officio members, it required 65 corporators to have its Mayor. The party may now have to negotiate power sharing agreement with the MIM if the latter doesn’t extend unconditional support. In 2009, when GHMC polls had thrown a similar verdict, the Congress had shared power with the MIM, leaving the post of Mayor to MIM for two years. The post of Mayor this time has been reserved for woman. Terming the results not to the expectations of the party, TRS working President K.T. Rama Rao said the party fell short by 20-25 seats. When asked about the possibility of an alliance with the MIM, he
said the party would discuss all the issues and then take a decision. Performing beyond its own expectations and making big inroads in the state capital, the BJP replaced MIM as the second largest party. The saffron party fought the polls with all the might with top Central leaders and Union ministers campaigning for its candidates. The party’s state chief Bandi Sanjay said that people have taught a lesson to Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao for his arrogance and corruption. He said despite all the unfair means adopted by the TRS, people gave their mandate to the BJP and they see it as the sole alternative to TRS. Counting of votes cast in all 150 divisions began at 8 a.m. at 30 places in the city with Telangana State Election Commission deploying over 8,000 personnel. The police made elaborate security arrangements in the city in view of the counting. Prohibitory orders and traffic restrictions were imposed around the count-
ing centres. The police in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda have imposed ban on victory rallies for the next 48 hours. Out of the total 74.67 lakh voters, 46.55 per cent had cast their votes in 149 divisions on Tuesday. There were 1,925 postal ballots. Polling in one division was stopped due to discrepancy in ballot paper and repoll was held on Thursday. A total of 1,122 candidates tested their political fortunes. The bitterly contested elections saw a high-decibel campaign with the participation of several central ministers and top national leaders of the BJP. Union Ministers Amit Shah, Prakash Javadekar and Smriti Irani, BJP President J.P. Nadda and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath campaigned for the BJP. The campaign also saw no holds barred attack by political opponents. The promise by BJP leaders to change the name of Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar if the party was voted to power also sparked a row.

CID sleuths had, earlier, questioned the BJP leader in this connection. However, the state agency did not name him in its first chargesheet filed in May last year. When contacted, Roy rubbished the charges and said that he had never believed in politics of violence. “At least 45 cases are pending against me. I do not believe in politics of violence and never indulge in such things. I challenge Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is also the police minister to say in the public that I have such kind of taste. “I was not involved in such things when I was with her party and not even now when I am a member of another political party,” Roy told PTI. Mumbai, Dec 5 (PTI): The charge sheet filed against Republic TV editorin-chief Arnab Goswami and two others in a 2018 abetment of suicide case says that the accused did not pay heed to victim Anvay Naik’s threat that he would end his life if his dues were not cleared by the trio. The charge sheet also said that Naik, who was under mental stress due to non-payment of dues by the accused, first strangled his mother Kumud, a partner in his business, before hanging himself to death. The police on Friday filed the charge sheet before a court in Alibaug in neighbouring Raigad district, where the case for alleged abetment of suicide of interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother has been registered. Besides Goswami, the other two accused named in the charge sheet are Firoze Sheikh and Nitish Sarda. “The victim (Naik) had told them (accused) that he would commit suicide if they don’t pay his dues. However, the accused ignored his threat and told him to do whatever he wants,” the charge sheet said. “The accused didn’t

Chief Minister M L Khattar, Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, State Assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta and a couple of ministers in the BJP-JJP government had earlier contracted the virus. “I will be administered a trial dose of Coronavirus vaccine #Covaxin a Bharat Biotech product Tomorrow at 11 am at Civil hospital, Ambala Cantt under the expert supervision of a team of doctors from PGI Rohtak and Health Department,” Vij had said in a tweet a day before he was inoculated. “I have volunteered to take the trial dose,” he added. Covaxin is being developed indigenously by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Chandigarh, Dec 5 (PTI): Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij, who had got one shot of the twodose trial of COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin a fortnight ago after he offered to be a volunteer, on Saturday said he has tested positive for the coronavirus. Vij, 67, had offered to be the first volunteer in the phase three trials for Covaxin, an indigenous potential vaccine being developed by Bharat Biotech against COVID-19. He was administered the dose on November 20 at the Civil Hospital in Ambala Cantonment, about 50 km from Chandigarh. “I have been tested Corona positive. I am admitted in Civil Hospital Ambala Cantt. All those who have come in close contact to me are advised to get themselves tested for corona (sic),” tweeted Vij who is also the state’s home minister. Bharat Biotech took to Twitter to allay any concerns over the efficacy of the vaccine, saying clinical trials are based on a twodose schedule, given 28 days apart. The vaccine efficacy will be determined two weeks after the second dose,it said. “COVAXIN has been designed to be protective 2 weeks after volunteers receive the 2nd dose. “The phase 3 trial is a

Battle against AIDS
W
ith the covid-19 pandemic proving to be the worst ever disrupter of every facet of human life and activities that continues to plague the world, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has warned that with the progress of several public health programmes grounded, India may miss the national target to end AIDS by 2030. That target would be difficult to achieve as the decline in annual new HIV infections was only 27% from 2010 to 2017 against a national target of a 75% decline by 2020.Furthermore, AIDS Society of India (ASI), said India had 2.35 million people living with HIV as of late 2019. Of this 1.345 million were receiving ART. There were 69,220 new HIV infections and 58,960 AIDS related deaths reported in India at the end of last year. National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) has also revealed that AIDS-related mortality per 1,00,000 population in India is highest in Manipur (36.86) followed by Mizoram (28.34), Nagaland (26.20), Andhra Pradesh (21.76), Puducherry (15.33), Meghalaya (11.08) and Telangana (10.79). HIV incidence per 1,000 uninfected population in 2019 was highest in Mizoram (1.18 per 1,000 uninfected population) followed by Nagaland (0.73) and Manipur (0.34). Meghalaya (0.23) also had an HIV incidence higher than the national average (0.05). A NACO report in 2019 revealed that the HIV epidemic was very high in Meghalaya (0.76%), which is the third highest in the country after Mizoram (1.19%) and Nagaland (0.82%). The virus “strike rate” has made Mizoram top the list of States with an HIV prevalence rate of 2.04% followed by two other north-eastern states - next door neighbour Manipur with 1.43% and Nagaland with 1.15%. In recent years, Mizoram has shown that its HIV/AIDS tally is on the increase. Data compiled by the Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) show that 67.21% of the positive cases from 2006 to March 2019 have been transmitted sexually, 1.03% of the transmission route being homosexual. According to a Mizoram AIDS worker, more than twenty thousand HIV cases had been detected in the state. An estimated 2,000 people have died of the disease in the state so far. Manipur is one of the top six states, having more HIV-positive cases in the country. Nagaland ranks third in HIV prevalence in India with 50 per cent of the infected people from Dimapur district. Dimapur has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence has recorded a total of 938 HIV positive cases during the period from April 2019 to January 2020. According to Dimapur District AIDS Control Society, altogether 881 in the general category were found to be positive out of the 12,512 persons tested for HIV in Dimapur district during the period. Voluntary organisations which are crucial for AIDS awareness and care are being handicapped after 2014 when the NDA government has unleashed a restrictive legislation to deny CSOs their right to register, and in some cases suspending or withdrawing CSO permits to operate. Some CSOs have been prevented from receiving funding from external sources, and others have had their bank accounts suspended. Thus, it is not only COVID-19 pandemic but the very policy of the centre that is posing serious threat on HIV/AIDS care and prevention in India.
DailyDevotion “The Temple of the Holy Spirit”
…only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you. —Genesis 41:40 I am accountable to God for the way I control my body under His authority. Paul said he did not “set aside the grace of God”— make it ineffective (Galatians 2:21). The grace of God is absolute and limitless, and the work of salvation through Jesus is complete and finished forever. I am not being saved— I am saved. Salvation is as eternal as God’s throne, but I must put to work or use what God has placed within me. To “work out [my] own salvation” (Philippians 2:12) means that I am responsible for using what He has given me. It also means that I must exhibit in my own body the life of the Lord Jesus, not mysteriously or secretly, but openly and boldly. “I discipline my body and bring it into subjection . . .” (1 Corinthians 9:27). Every Christian can have his body under absolute control for God. God has given us the responsibility to rule over all “the temple of the Holy Spirit,” including our thoughts and desires (1 Corinthians 6:19). We are responsible for these, and we must never give way to improper ones. But most of us are much more severe in our judgment of others than we are in judging ourselves. We make excuses for things in ourselves, while we condemn things in the lives of others simply because we are not naturally inclined to do them. Paul said, “I beseech you…that you present your bodies a living sacrifice…” (Romans 12:1). What I must decide is whether or not I will agree with my Lord and Master that my body will indeed be His temple. Once I agree, all the rules, regulations, and requirements of the law concerning the body are summed up for me in this revealed truth-my body is “the temple of the Holy Spirit.”

T
he farmers’ agitation requires sympathetic handling even if the Govt has facts on its side. A cavalier attitude is fraught with great political and security risk. It brought no fresh honour upon the Union Government that agitating farmers from Punjab were left to shiver on the streets of Delhi the night gurudwaras had been illuminated for Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti. Even as the farmers’ agitation had been raging in Punjab since September, the Government had been complacent about it till they knocked the doors of Delhi. At that time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not blinked twice before accepting the resignation of Harsimrat Kaur from the Cabinet. Her party, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), one of the oldest constituents of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), quit the ruling coalition a week later. Whatever the parting of ways might mean for the SAD, it could have serious consequences for peace in the frontier State. The BJP’s diminished clout in Punjab contrasts with its firm grip at the Centre. Also, expanding footprints across India might actually drive the Sikh-majority state into an isolationist mindset. The BJP-SAD partnership,
Don’t burn the bridges
according to the late Arun Jaitley, was as much a social alliance as it was political. Their coming together in the mid-1990s was an apt postscript to the end of the insurgency in Punjab. Moreover, the SAD’s support base was among rural Jat Sikh agriculturists while the urban Hindu middle-class made up the BJP’s constituency. So the breakup might trigger polarisation, with nefarious elements waiting in the wings to revive militancy in the state. This will be the last thing the BJP wants in a State where Hindus are in a minority. The Modi Government has no Sikh face, barring Hardeep Singh Puri, who is a diplomat, rather than a politician by grooming, and he lost the Amritsar seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. The council of ministers is lacking even the ornamental presence of S.S. Ahluwalia, BJP MP from West Bengal, though he never represented Sikh votes. The saffron party had earlier lost Navjyot Singh Sidhu to the Congress. The Government might have the best interest of farmers in its heart while enacting the new agricultural laws but reforms in the agricultural marketing sector were long overdue to make farming remunerative. While there was no bar on selling agriculture produce
in the open market, outside the MSP regime, or on items not procured by the Government, even before the new laws were enacted, there was no commercial and legal architecture for it. Sadly, the Government felt that consensus-building was redundant. The laws, enacted during the Monsoon Session, had originally been rushed through the Ordinance route on June 5. It is unclear whether there were even minimal consultations with the State Governments (agriculture being a State subject under the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution), farmers’ associations and other stakeholders. Even the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS), a front organisation of the RSS, is unhappy with the way the Government dealt with the issue. Mohini Mohan Mishra, the BKS All India Secretary, recently stated that nearly 25,000 farmers had sent a proposal to the Prime Minister. There’s no doubt that the laws have been made for the traders and would eventually benefit them. This is akin to what Rabindranath Tagore, speaking of the British rule wedded to the idea of progress, observed: “They are not unwilling to do a favour but don’t wish to come close. They would rather feel relieved if they can hastily beat retreat af-
Christmas 2020 advent: Of masks and the masses!
A
s December punch the clock and the cold winds in the night kiss our cheeks, the arrival ofChristmas season with its profound memories is impossible to not notice; it is in the air. Amidst the euphoric feeling, onecannot turn a blind eye to the prevailing reality which questions the mind as to -how merry will Christmas 2020 be? ‘How are we going to celebrate Christmas this year?’ I’d asked my better half, sounding a bit worried. Our wedding Anniversary and birthdays in 2020 have all fallen on lockdown periods and my already celebration-deprived calendar reflects nothing to cheer for, except Christmas. I guess the case is not mine alone. When we have months of lockdown and the restrictive unlock process is yet to be fully completed, the odds of finding a person with an unaffected plan is highlyimprobable. Be that as it may, December has been a hope that helps many to accept missed-celebrations with a consolation that, ‘at least we have Christmas.’ ‘We will worship the Lord and give thanks to him on Christmas Day,’ replied my wife nonchalantly. She added that one’s spiritual health should not be affected by physical health. While I am in complete agreement with the aforementioned ‘spiritual health’ I could not help but remind her that I need to dance and sing merrily in a group, which is obviously not guaranteed as of now. To that, she reminded me of how, many festivals like Eid, Diwali, Durga Puja, etc. have been affected and requested me to accept the ‘new normal’ as many other people from different faiths did. Post-Christianity, for the tribal in general and my community- Kuki, in particular, Christmas is considered the biggest festivalamong all the cultural, social, and religious festivals. The celebration includes, after the worship services, an interesting item called ‘Lengkhom’ which translates as ‘get-together’. This get-together mostly involves singing lenkhomlaa (get-together hymns and choruses) and dancing
in lam-kol ( Group dance). One of the song goes as-‘Aw lunglhaisel in naosenleng penni hin, kipah in saote cham leh lung olna’, which loosely translates as ‘Be gracious on this birthday of the King; let us sing with joy for peace and tranquillity’. There are many such songs of Christmas, the meaning of which underscored how the celebration is rightfully valued. Surely, the once fun-loving community, who then engaged in Chon, Kut and Som-len, etc. have now discontinued most of their traditional merry-making activities and Christmas is, therefore, one such occasion every household- rich or poor and every individual whether from the village or the city looked up to with different hope and excitement. Personally, I have countless memories attached to Christmas. Evennow, the advent of Christmas month brings an unexplainable joy in my heart. In days gone by, January to November was considered a “waiting phase” and the arrival of December month would be greeted with oodles of zest. We’d sing our hearts out in Christmas Carols, so much so, that our throats, hurt by the extreme singing would take days to recover. Tea sipped with straws in between the songs during “Lengkhom” (Get-together) had the taste better than the best beverage in the best restaurant. The atmosphere - the laughs, funs and bonhomie were blissful to say the least. The only spoiler was the ticking clock that didn’t have the emotional consideration and seemed to run at the speed of lightning. How we then wished the clock to stand still! We literally had a merry Christmas; we celebrated in the best possible way we could,to make us happy. The pandemic in 2020 has catastrophic consequences, but it is the determination to sail through the storms, the hope to have better times again that keeps at least our minds safe from being infected by the Virus. And with the possibility of a Christmas celebration in 2020 without ‘Lengkhom’ looming large now, it appears what most people
ter doing the favour…they don’t do mercy, they do a favour, they do not love but protect; do not respect but try to act fairly; they do not irrigate the land, though never ungenerous in sowing abundant quantity of seeds” (Raja-Praja, P.4-5). His remarks appear telling today. The Government’s cavalier attitude that “we know what’s good for you” vis-à-vis the farmers has clearly run into problems. Even if the Vigyan Bhawan talks break the ice, the Government would have finally realised that to act in haste and repent in leisure is not a good policy. The critics of the farmers’ agitation, active on social media, have been quick to dub the farmers as supporters of Khalistan. Fake photos were also circulated on the digital space. The question is what do they propose to do even if they are Khalistan sympathisers? Would they like to send the Army to quell them? Can the BJP Government afford to burn its bridges in Punjab? Do they have a strong constituency of their own or friends to rely upon if the agrarian crisis, god forbid, deepens into a social crisis? The unsympathetic attitude of slandering democratic governments of the past for farmers’ woes must stop. When a Government
C
tries to de-legitimise the Opposition or vice versa, forces inimical to democracy and peace (like the Khalistanis, for instance) take over. Punjab has profited from the dam-building policies by Jawaharlal Nehru, Food Corporation of India (FCI) procurement by Lal Bahadur Shastri and the Green Revolution by Indira Gandhi. The right way the Modi Government can package its agriculture policy is by saying that it wants to take the story forward through measures long overdue. Fortunately, the BJP did not have to fight the Khalistani insurgency in the State in the 1980s and early 1990s. It was fought mostly by the Congress Government, even though it was partly responsible for its rise and momentum. In the 1980s, Khalistanis gained by projecting the post-Green Revolution agrarian problems in Punjab along communal lines. At that time, the Congress, which was in as strong a position across India as the BJP is today, was projected as a Hindu fascist party. The Hindus of Punjab became the first targets of Khalistani violence. This is something that all parties, including the BJP, have avoided recalling in public for fear of opening old wounds. Traces of Khalistani elements, there is no gainsaying, are still
active in Punjab. They are likely to exploit for their evil agenda any unsympathetic attitude of the Government towards the farmers, the bulk of whom are Sikhs. The farmers of Punjab have so far rightly avoided communalising the current issue unlike they did so in the 80s. In fact, when their agitation took off in mid-September, it was both against the Centre as well as the State, where the Congress is currently in power. Apart from rolling back the farm bills, they also wanted loan waiver from the State Government. However, in the last two months, the Congress has been able to garner the farmers’ sympathies. In politics, sentiments matter as much as policy. Way back in March, 1783, a Sikh force led by Baba Baghel Singh and Jassa Singh Alhuwalia had attacked Mughal Delhi to hoist the triangular saffron flag at Red Fort. A troop of 30,000 Nihang Sikhs encamped at a place nearby, which later came to be known as Tis Hazari. The farmers of Punjab have beaten their swords in ploughshares and spears into pruning hooks. Nothing must be done to wake up the sleeping demons of the 1780s or the 1980s. Priyadarshi Dutta, New Delhi (Author and independent researcher)
Counseling and myths
ounselling has existed for many years and generations maybe since the beginning of civilization in various forms but informally. The catalyst for the formal session came into the picture highlighted by the work of Sigmund Freud, a famous neurologist and a psychoanalyst followed by many others. Professional counseling is of recent origin. In comparison to other parts of the Globe, India is still in the process of establishing Counseling as a profession. Many times counseling is used or is linked with counseling or guidance associated with some educational institutions or organizations and often Counselor’s misunderstood or misinterpreted. There is a need to understand that Counselling is a professional relationship that happens between a trained Counselor and an individual/group that works together in various areas to help a person that may be going through developmental, situational, and short or long-term problems to achieve mental and emotional wellbeing. Many times there is a sense of discomfort when it comes to visiting a Counselor or is being referred to a Counsellor as a part of the treatment. It may be because many of us are not aware of the services provided or the people misinformed about the many reasons for visiting a Counselor or maybe because of the stigma related to it. So to understand Counselling, let’s check out some of the very common myths and facts associated with counselingMyth- People who go for counseling are Crazy, mentally sick Fact- It is not necessary and it’s wrong to categorize that people going for counseling as mentally sick or crazy. It is true that a person who is diagnosed with mental illness receive counseling to cope and manage their condition but is not exclusive only for them, anyone who is going through everyday problems in the various situation or adjusting to the new changes in their life can reach out for sessions which may prove beneficial in having multiple perspectives to reflect and understanding of the issues. Myth –People receiving counseling are emotionally weak, immature, is under the influence of certain addictive substances. Fact- It needs a lot of strength and courage to seek out professional assistance especially in the context of mental wellbeing the topic where lots of stereotypes
are attached and in the session where the individual may be needed to share and present their vulnerabilities. Counseling is also a space where a person explores to enhance themselves or to find out their potentials, to have a better understanding of their plans. Therefore we see an individual who is mature and ready to know about themselves. As mentioned earlier counseling is not exclusive and is for everyone and not only for someone who is undergoing addiction issues. Myth - Counselling is just talking and it’s a waste of resources time, money, etc, etc... Fact – It involves talking but the counselors are professionally trained individuals and they apply/ use certain techniques, skills, and approaches that are based on various scientific theories. Yes, talking can be carried out with family members and friends with no or less difficulty and not spending financial resources but in certain cases, the usual conversation may not help when it comes to objectively manage the situations, and also in certain cases there requires a space for confidentiality and sensitivity where experts and trained individuals will be needed. And also when it comes to financial spending, we are making an investment in our Health well-being which is important. Myth – Counseling will provide solutions and solve the problem that is being encountered Fact – Counseling is not about giving “Advice” or readymade solutions for the problems that a person may have/ is going through. It is about sitting down together in a therapeutic environment to gain greater insight and assist in deciding to manage and adapt to the concerns. The Counselor will play a role in facilitating gain awareness. We also need to understand that no individuals are the same and that perception varies hence an individual’s experience with counseling may vary and there may be a time that initial encounter with a session was disastrous leaving with more questions and discomfort but it is always encouraged to try again counselling because at times it takes a visit of more than one Counselor to find our comfort in working out with the concerns. have hoped for is to vanish in thin air. However, this is not to project the stakes to an artificial high and thereby vouchfor the celebration perhaps even to the extent of ignoring all guidelines and health directives. The intent is to highlight how the celebration of Christmas really meant to many people like me. Still, all that matters is the undeniable truth that we are faced with something all too different and tough- both mentally and physically.Irrespective of how well-intended is our endeavours, we cannot take the luxury of risking our health and that of others. The commitment will take more than normal talks of accepting the new normal to understand what we might have to lose to gain our health, which transcends everything. Unthinkable as it may sound and appear, we will have to imagine Christmas without mass gatherings. On the bright side, vaccines will soon be within reach of the common men, and ignoring the conspiracy surrounding the news that the Virus’ second wave is a scam manufactured to boost the sales of vaccines, we have reasons to be optimistic about the days to come. But, till those doses reached us, we will be far better off concentrating on covering our faces in masks than coveting masses to face. ‘All these years, you have celebrated Christmas just the way you wanted. Now, should there be any eventuality that Christmas is not celebrated in Church with the masses, why not take that as an opportunity to reach out to Him and seek His happiness; after all, it is His’ Birthday and a silent fellowship with Him on a silent night is a precious opportunity nobody can lockdown,’ said the mother of my two children as we end the discussion that unlocks my realm of thoughts Sir, to a new outlook. The new building will also have a grand Constitution Hall to showcase India’s democratic heritage, a lounge for members of Parliament, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking space. In the new building, the Lok Sabha chamber will have a seating capacity for 888 members, while Rajya Sabha will have 384 seats for the upper house members. This has been done keeping in mind the future increase in the number of members for the two houses. At present, Lok Sabha has a sanctioned strength of 543 members and Rajya Sabha of 245. In September this year, Tata Projects Limited won the bid to construct the new parliament building at a cost of Rs 861.90 crore. The new building will be constructed close to the existing one under the Central Vista redevelopment project. The existing Parliament House building will be suitably retro-fitted to provide more functional spaces for parliamentary events, to ensure its usage along with the new building.

Cong demands immediate K’taka bandh evokes lukewarm response rollback of fuel price hikes
New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI): The Congress on Saturday criticised the government for hiking oil prices in these difficult times and demanded its immediate rollback and passing of the benefits to the consumer. Repeated and “unjust” increase in prices as also the central excise duty on petrol and diesel has inflicted insurmountable pain and suffering on the people of India, Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said. “The Congress demands complete rollback of the excise duty hike effected by the Modi government on petrol and diesel during the corona period. “The Congress urges upon the government to immediately roll back the petrol-diesel prices and excise duty hike post March 5, 2020 and pass on this benefit to the people of India in these difficult times,” Surjewala said in a statement. He also demanded that the benefit of reduced international crude oil prices be passed on to people and the rates of petrol, diesel and LPG gas reduced accordingly. The Congress leader also reiterated the party’s demand for bringing petrol and diesel under the purview of the GST. Surjewala said the entire nation is fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, and people were expecting some kind of relief and economic assistance in these challenging times. The BJP government
is “fleecing” people by not just raising fuel rates on daily basis but also refusing to share benefits of lower crude prices with the people, he claimed. “The cruel government is raising petrol and diesel rates on a daily basis, while charging very high excise duty on petrol and diesel. The government has increased petrol and diesel prices by 14 and 13 times respectively in the last 16 days since November 19, 2020,” he said. The Congress general secretary said the consistent rise in prices of petrol and diesel by the Modi government is adding to people’s woes. He said when the BJP assumed power in May 2014, excise duty on petrol was Rs 9.20 per litre and on diesel, it was Rs 3.46 per litre, but in the last six years, the BJP government at the Centre has increased the excise duty on petrol by an additional Rs 23.78 per litre and on diesel, by an additional Rs 28.37 per litre. This is a “shocking 820 per cent hike” in excise duty on diesel and “258 per cent increase” in excise duty on petrol, Surjewala said. “The Modi government has earned Rs 19,00,000 crore in the last 6.5 years by increasing excise duty on petrol and diesel alone. Since the lockdown eight months ago, the extent of extortion and profiteering by repeated increases in prices and excise duty on petrol and diesel has surpassed all forms of exploitation,” he claimed.
New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for a new Parliament building on December 10, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said on Saturday. The new building will have an area of 64,500 square metres and is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 971 crore, he said. “The existing temple of democracy is completing 100 years... It is a matter of pride for our countrymen that the new one will be built by our own people as a prime example of Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” Birla said here announcing details of the new proposed building. “The new building will showcase the cultural diversity of the country. Hopefully, in the 75th year of independence, Parliament session will be held in the new building,” he said. Birla said the new building will be earthquake resistant and 2000 people will be directly involved
in the construction of the new building and 9,000 indirectly. He said as many as 1,224 MPs can sit together in the building, while a new office complex for all MPs of both the houses would be built at the site of the existing Shram Shakti Bhawan. The existing Parliament building will be conserved as it is an archaeological asset of the country, Birla said. He said the invitation will be extended to all political parties. While some would attend physically and others would attend virtually, Birla said, while adding that the ceremony would follow Covid-related guidelines. A formal invitation to Modi was extended by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday. As per rules, the speaker of the lower house of parliament is also the custodian of the parliament building. Sufficient steps have been taken to control air and

Polling was held on 1 December. “This is painful and embarrassing both,” admitted many senior leaders of the BJP. A section of BJP leaders feels that SP won because of the strong support of the Kayastha community which has a sizeable presence in the graduate and teachers constituencies both. Samajwadi Party leader Deepak

It assumed that having Mahesh Srivastava as Varanasi Vibhag pramukh is enough to get the community votes,” a BJP leader rued. BJP had fielded Thakur candidates-Chetnarain Singh and Kedarnath Singh (sitting MLC on the graduates’ constituency).
‘BJP will recommend awardwinning Maha teacher as MLC’
Pune, Dec 5 (PTI): Maharashtra BJP leader Pravin Darekar on Saturday said his party will recommend Global Teacher Prize winner Ranjitsingh Disale as the governor- nominated member of legislative council (MLC). The Leader of Opposition in the legislative council felicitated Disale, who won the USD 1-million Global Teacher Prize 2020, at the latter’s village in Solapur district. After his meeting with Disale, Darekar said the BJP will recommend the teacher’s name as a governor-nominated MLC. “I will speak to state BJP chief Chandrakant Patil and senior leader Devendra Fadanvis and then write to the governor,” he said. Trade deficit might widen as Covid dents exports: Experts New Delhi, Dec 5 (IANS): The overall trade deficit is likely to widen as rising coronavirus cases and subsequent lockdowns in key export markets dent India’s merchandise exports, experts said. The recently released provisional data showed that India’s merchandise exports dropped by 9.07 per cent in November to $23.43 billion from $25.77 billion in November 2019. “The slippage in exports growth signifies the near term impact of fresh restrictions in trading partners. The average merchandise trade deficit is likely to reach substantially higher levels in H2FY21 as compared to Q2FY21,” said Aditi Nayar, Principal Economist, ICRA. Among commodities and products, iron ore, rice and pharmaceuticals continued to display healthy uptick in YoY shipments, whereas leather, textiles and engineering goods continued to show contraction. EEPC India Chairman Mahesh Desai said that exporters continue to battle the Covid-19 impact on global trade, pinning hopes on start of the vaccination and abating of the pandemic.
Agra, Dec 5 (IANS): Agra district officials said on Saturday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually green signal the launching of the ambitious Agra Metro Project that will help reduce environmental pollution in the Taj City. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Puri are expected to be present in the launching programme for which a huge hangar is being developed to seat 300-odd guests on Fatehabad Road here. Officials said Modi would be virtually launching the project at 12 noon on Monday and address the gathering for around 18 minutes. The UP Metro Rail Corporation expects the project to be completed before 2024. The metro will connect all major tourist attractions in the city. Two separate corridors are being developed that will criss-
cross the city. The first section between the eastern gate of the Taj Mahal and the Jama Masjid in the heart of the city should be completed in three years, officials indicated. The environmental impact assessment studies have already been conducted by committees of experts and heritage conservationists. Though decks have been cleared for the longawaited Rs 8,000 crore Agra Metro project, green activists are asking why the sad state of the river Yamuna in the Taj city has been ignored. Local activists in a series of tweets have reminded the Prime Minister of his promise to clean up the Yamuna in Agra. They expect the PM to green signal the Yamuna barrage project hanging fire for the last three decades. The barrage is planned to be constructed downstream of the Taj Mahal. River activist Devashish Bhattacharya said “we

worldwide. “With the increasing usage of technical textile products among segments like automobiles, civil engineering and construction, agriculture, medical, shipping, industrial safety, sports and personal protection etc., the technical textile has a bright and promising future in India,” According to Rajkumar: “Government has set up a target of the market size of US$ 350 billion to be achieved by 202425 from the current level of US$ 167 billion, for the T&C Sector. The said target cannot be only achieved by showing growth in the conventional segments like Cotton and MMF segments. Until and unless, we go for out of box solutions and show tremendous growth in the technical textiles, achieving the market size of US$ 350 billion looks highly unlikely.”

(From p-1) In view of this, NMA, said it was “highly questionable” that the representative of the Government of India had not taken cognizance of Naga women’s expressed wishes for peace and an early settlement inclusive of all NPGs “for the future of our children” in all Naga areas. Further, NMA reiterated that history of peace processes around the world proved that when women’s voices were not counted and went unheard by negotiators; “peace is not sustained and peace processes break down.” Therefore, NMA asked why was had the Governor’s message shown “disrespect to the primary stakeholders who were also “Naga women, the other half of the Naga population in all Naga areas.” NMA said it was expected that such an official address from the head of the state, who carried the responsibility of being the Interlocutor, “should not have been accompanied by dire warnings of wrath or threats, to the Nagas, especially Naga women, who have suffered so much under the impunity of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act since 1958, much before statehood, that still continues to violate our right to peace and security.”

NMA said as mothers and women, who are half the Naga population, mothers had struggled alongside their men and brothers, “in war and peace”. It said as Nagas stand on the threshold of a new understanding of peace and at the crossroads to a historic peace, the governor’s “patronizing speech” has proved that there was “great disrespect to our history and the thousands who have marched and died under our Naga flag.” NMA asserted that the Naga flag was not a flag of the Naga political groups, but it was a flag revered “in remembrance of our struggle, a living symbol of our political belief and our Naga identity.” It reiterated that Nagas were not a confused race of people, as they were well aware of their history so were the women, who have faced the brunt of Indian militarization and its unimaginable atrocities under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act for decades. NMA said with its slogan of “Shed No More Blood”, it has worked for years to bring peace and create better understanding through dialogues, whether it be with “our armed brothers” or with successive governors, union home ministers, Primes Ministers of India.
Expect real GDP to decline 1-2% YoY in 3QFY21: Report Mumbai, Dec 5 (IANS): The contraction in India’s real GDP can narrow down to just 1-2 per cent, said a report by Motilal Oswal Financial Services. Accordingly, the inhouse Economic Activity Index (EAI) for India’s real GVA (EAI-GVA) grew by 4.8 per cent YoY in October 2020, marking the second consecutive month of growth. “This is the first month in a year when nonfarm activities (both industrial and services) grew faster than the farm sector,” Motilal Oswal Financial Services said in a report. The GVA includes taxes, but excludes subsidies. Last month, the NSO data showed that on a YoY basis, Q2 GVA for 2020-21
from the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector inched lower to 3.4 per cent growth, against 3.5 per cent in the same quarter of 2019-20. However, the EAIGDP, continued to contract for the eighth consecutive month in October 2020 and that too faster than the previous month. “While personal cons u m p t i o n ex p e n d i t u r e (PCE) continued to contract in double-digits for the seventh consecutive month, total investments declined 5 per cent the slowest fall in eight months.” “Excluding government spending, EAIGDP contracted 7.6 per cent YoY in Oct’20 versus a fall of 5.1 per cent YoY in Sep’20.” According to the re-

The polluted water of the river is a threat to the Mughal monuments along the banks of the river.” During election speeches before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the prime minister had promised to take up the Yamuna cleaning project on priority. Later, the union transport minister on several occasions promised to start a ferry service between Delhi and Agra in the Yamuna. “Sadly, they have forgotten the river Yamuna, which is the lifeline of the whole Braj Mandal and sustains the good health of several historical monuments including the Taj Mahal along its banks,” added green activists Nandan, Jugal, Rahul Raj and Deepak Rajput.

Russia starts COVID-19 vaccinations L o nd o n , D e c 5 (Agencies): Russia is starting its Covid-19 vaccination programme, with clinics in the capital Moscow inoculating those most at risk from the virus. Its own vaccine Sputnik V, which was registered in August, is being used, reports BBC. Developers say it is 95% effective and causes no major side effects, but it is still undergoing mass testing. Thousands of people have already registered to get the first of two jabs over the weekend, but it is unclear how much Russia can manufacture. Producers are only expected to make two million doses of the vaccine by the end of the year. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, who announced the programme earlier in the week, said it was being offered to people in the city of 13 million who work in schools and the health service, and social workers. He said the list would grow as more of the vaccine became available. An online registration service allows city residents in the above professions aged 18-60 to book free appointments at 70 sites around the city. respiratory diseases within the last two weeks will be excluded, as will those with certain chronic illnesses, and pregnant and breastfeeding women. Each person will receive two injections, the second 21 days after the first. We’ve seen a handful of health workers and teachers getting vaccinated at this smart, central Moscow clinic. They were all calm enough about receiving Sputnik V, even though it’s still undergoing mass trials to test its safety and efficacy. One doctor said she’d seen enough Covid patients at her own hospital to prefer taking her chances with the vaccine. When I asked another woman whether she was worried about the experimental injection, she reasoned that “everything has to start somewhere”.

Everyone said they’d signed up voluntarily. Patients are asked a few general health questions before getting the vaccine, which is removed from the deep freeze around 15 minutes before use. A leaflet warns of possible side effects, though it suggests those are most likely to be mild and last a couple of days at most. Reactions among the public to the vaccine rollout have been mixed, however. “I like it because this is a chance to turn the tide, to reduce the infection rate,” resident Igor Krivobokov told Reuters news agency. But another, Sergei Grishin, said he did not plan to get the jab. “This process will take a long time. Only a small amount of the vaccine has been produced... Let everyone else get vaccinated,
and if they will - I will survive,” he said. So far Russia has recorded 2,431,731 cases of the virus, and 42,684 deaths. On Saturday it reported a record daily high of 28,782 new cases. Hospitals all over the country have been overstretched. Moscow is the centre of the pandemic in Russia, recording thousands of cases and dozens of deaths daily. The total number of cases for the past 24 hours was 7,993. Russia’s government has ruled out a lockdown, but in November Mr Sobyanin introduced restrictions in Moscow on opening hours for bars and clubs, moved higher education students to distance learning and reduced cultural and sporting events. Russia has developed two COVID-19 vaccines: Sputnik V is backed by the Russian Direct Investment Fund as well as another developed by Siberia’s Vector Institute. Final trials for both are yet to be completed. Scientists have raised concerns about the speed at which Russia has worked, giving the regulatory goahead for its vaccines and launching mass vaccinations before full trials to test safety and efficacy had been completed.
Covid vaccination in US will not be mandatory: Biden L o nd o n , D e c 5 (Agencies): Presidentelect Joe Biden says Americans won’t be forced to take a coronavirus vaccine when one becomes available in the US. It comes as the nation’s health protection agency for the first time urged “universal mask use” indoors, apart from when Americans are at home, BBC reported. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said the US had “entered a phase of high-level transmission” of the virus. On Friday the US recorded over 2,500 deaths and nearly 225,000 new cases. It has confirmed 14.3 million cases and more than 278,000 deaths. Mr Biden - who is due to take office on 20 January - also said he expected his inauguration to be a scaled-back event without large crowds because of coronavirus concerns. “My guess is there’ll still be a platform ceremony but I don’t know how it’s all going to work out,” he said. Pfizer, which says its vaccine has been shown to be 95% effective in clinical trials, and Moderna, which says its jab is 94% effective, have both applied to the Food and Drug Administration to distribute their drugs in the US.
Trump plan junked, Obama-era shield on immigrants back; Indians benefit
Washington, Dec 5 (PTI): Reversing the decision of the outgoing Trump administration, a federal court has ordered full reinstatement of an Obama-era programme that protects undocumented immigrants brought to the US as minors from deportation, a ruling that will help a large number of Indian migrants. The Trump administration tried ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) in 2017, but the US Supreme Court blocked its attempt in June. On Friday, US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis in the Eastern District of New York directed the Department of Homeland Security to extend the two-year renewals to DACA recipients and start accepting applications from first-time applicants beginning Monday. This means that the first time since September 2017, new applicants who were not previously eligible may now apply for the programme which shield undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children from deportation. The court believes that these additional remedies are reasonable. Indeed, the government has assured the court that a public notice along the lines described is forthcoming, Judge Garaufis said in his order.
Approximately 640,000 immigrants are enrolled in the DACA programme, which was blocked by Trump.
The DACA is an immigration policy that allows some individuals with unlawful presence in the US after being brought to the country as children to receive a renewable twoyear period of deferred action from deportation and become eligible for a work permit in the US. DACA recipients are often referred to as Dreamers. To be eligible for the programme, recipients cannot have felonies or serious misdemeanours on their records. Approximately 640,000 immigrants are enrolled in the DACA programme. According to a 2019 report by South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), there are at least 630,000 Indians who are undocumented, a 72 per cent increase since 2010. There are currently at least 4,300 active South
Asian DACA recipients. As of August 2018, there are approximately 2,550 active Indian DACA recipients. Only 13 per cent of the overall 20,000 DACA eligible Indians have applied and received DACA, SAALT said. There are 1,300 active Pakistani DACA recipients, 470 Bangladeshi recipients, 120 Sri Lankan recipients, and 60 Nepali recipients, it said. The Trump administration can now appeal to a federal appeals court or go to the Supreme Court for temporary relief from enforcement of the judge’s order. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the court has upheld the Obamaera programme initiated under the presidency of Barack Obama, which respects American values and the will of the American people.

18 dead in China mine accident
BEIJING, Dec 5 (AFP): Eighteen miners were confirmed dead on Saturday after a carbon monoxide leak at a coal mine in southwestern China, state media reported, with rescue efforts under way to reach five others still trapped underground. Twenty-four miners were caught up in the accident at the Diaoshuidong mine in the city of Chongqing after the gas leak occurred on Friday, state broadcaster CCTV reported. As of Saturday morning, one survivor and 18 victims had been found, said CCTV, citing the local emergency rescue command headquarters. The accident occurred while workers were dismantling underground mining equipment, CCTV reported. The mine had been closed for the previous two months. Investigators were working to determine the cause of the accident, the official Xinhua news agency said. An earlier accident at the mine claimed the lives of three people in 2013, according to Xinhua. Islamabad, Dec 5 (IANS): Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that his government was introducing a new system of ‘reward and punishment under which civil servants would not be transferred but sacked if found involved in corruption and irregularities. “We will not transfer a corrupt bureaucrat but will sack him,” Dawn news quoted Khan as saying on Friday said while addressing a ceremony held on completion of two years of Pakistan Citizen Portal at the Prime Minister House. The Prime Minister lauded Pakistan Citizen

Portal for entertaining three million complaints in two years, urging people to use the forum for their empowerment as well as to hold officers accountable. “I want more people to use it (citizen portal). We will further strengthen the portal as it is the best method for citizens to register complaints. “As a Prime minister, it is also easy for me to know which minister or department is working well and which bureaucrat is performing poorly,” he added. Since its launch on October 28, 2018, around three million people registered themselves on the portal and reported 2.7 million complaints, out of which 2.5 million were resolved, according to official figures. Meanwhile, Imran Khan on December 4 called for debt forgiveness as he proposed a 10-point plan to save a number of developing countries from collapsing as a result of Covid-19 restrictions and lockdowns.

Billie Eilish calls off World’s largest solar telescope Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone ‘Where Do We Go?’ tour releases its first image of wide sunspot help raise $1.5 million for charities
M
elissa McCarthy and husband Ben Falcone wrapped up the 20 Days Of Kindness campaign, where $20,000 was donated to 20 different charities in as many days. The campaign, which was made in tandem with their new film Superintelligence, and designed to spotlight acts of kindness amid this difficult year, helped raise more than $1.5 million for charities, according to People. McCarthy documented the effort by showcasing each of the charities that received money on social media during the 20 consecutive days of giving. 'I can honestly say these have been some of the most inspiring, eyeopening days of my life,' the comedian and actress, 50, shared in the last give-away of the campaign that went
to Planned Parenthood. 'There have been quite a few rough moments in 2020 but being able to learn and talk about all these incredible organizations have really warmed my heart.' She went on to give some vital details on the services Planned Parenthood provides to millions of women, men and young people worldwide, as well as her own first-hand account of how the nonprofit provided help to her when she was in her early 20s without medical insurance. Along with Planned Parenthood, the other charities benefiting from the 20 Days Of Kindness Campaign include: Joyful Heart Foundation, The International Rescue Committee, Teach For America, Habitat For Humanity, The American Foundation For Suicide Prevention, Feed-
ing America, the Movember movement, National Coalition For The Homeless, Together We Rise, Common Sense Media, Human Rights Campaign, The Trevor Project, Make A Wish, World Central Kitchen, Conservation International, Step Up, Best Friends Animal Society, Team Rubicon and Girls Who Code. While the couple helped raised $1.5 million for the charities during the campaign, donations are still being accepted on the 20 Days Of Kindness website. 'Remember you can give whatever you can,' McCarthy added in her final post. '50 cents or a dollar because people are worth saving and a little bit of love goes a long way.' Superintelligence, a romantic action comedy film directed by Falcone, premiered on HBO Max on November 26. McCarthy plays Carol Peters, a former corporate executive who has her earnest yet unfulfilled life turned upside down when she is selected for observation by the world's first superintelligence – an artificial intelligence that may or may not take over the world. The film is the couple's fourth collaboration together. (Dailymail)

inger Billie Eilish has officially cancelled her upcoming When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go tour, saying she tried to explore many ways to make it possible, but could not find a way. The tour, which was supposed to last for at least six months, launched in March. It was postponed after just three shows due to the Covid pandemic. "I wish that I could have seen you on tour this year. I’ve missed performing for you and being on stage so much I can't even tell you," Eilish wrote in a note to fans, posted on Twitter. "We've tried as many different scenarios as pos-
sible for the tour but none are possible and, although i know so many of you want to hold onto your tickets and VIP passes, the best thing we can do for everyone is to get the money back into your hands as soon as we can," she added. The singer asked her fans to be on a lookout for more information on refunds, saying that "when we're ready and its safe we'll let you know when everyone will be able to purchase tickets again for the next tour". She also urged everyone to "stay safe, drink lots of water and wear a mask". (IANS)

Man City go 4th with 2-0 win over Fulham L o nd o n , D e c 5 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : M a n chester City continued their return to form with another one-sided home win, outclassing Fulham to move up to fourth in the Premier League table. Raheem Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne laid the platform for the win, with the latter setting up the former to slot in the opening goal. The roles were then reversed with the England winger tripped in the box by Joachim Andersen to allow the Belgian midfielder to score from the penalty spot. The pair could easily have had another four goals between them but Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola made a string of good saves, while De Bruyne also struck the bar with a shot. It is the first time this campaign that City have won back-to-back league matches and it lifts them to a spot in the table more in keeping of a side with title aspirations. Fulham spent most of the game repelling attacks, but at least tried to ask questions of the home side, as they did to far greater effect at Leicester on Monday. Three boxing legends to return awards in solidarity with farmers
New Delhi, Dec 5 (Agencies): Three boxing legends Gurbax Singh Sandhu, Kaur Singh, and Jaipal Singh — Friday said they will return their awards to express solidarity with the farmers protesting against new agriculture laws. Sandhu, a former national boxing coach during whose tenure India secured its maiden Olympic medal in the sport, is a Dronacharya awardee. Kaur Singh, a former Asian Games (1982) gold medallist is a Padma Shri and Arjuna awardee while 1986 Asian Games silver medallist Jaipal Singh is an Arjuna awardee. Kaur Singh, who was bestowed with Ar juna award in 1982 followed by Padma Shri in 1983, will go to Jalandhar Saturday morning to join fellow former sportspersons, who will be going to Delhi to return the awards to President Ram Nath Kovind, if the demands of farmers are not met. The 71-year-old, who once fought boxing legend Muhammad Ali in an exhibition match in 1980 in New Delhi, owns four acres of land in village Khanal Khurd in Punjab’s Sangrur and has been pained by the government’s action over the protesting farmers. “Awards mere liye koi

Before I joined the Indian Army in late 1970s, my father Karnail Singh supported my boxing from the income from our farmland. All my achievements are due to the efforts of my farmer father. Even though I have been suffering from ill health since the last two years, I will join the other sportspersons at Jalandhar on Saturday and give them my awards for returning to the president,” said Kaur Singh while talking with The Indian Express. While Kaur Singh represented India in 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, his team-mate Jaipal Singh was member of the Indian boxing camp for 1984 Olympics. The 63-year-old
owns seven acres of agricultural land in the village Rup rohira in Sangrur district and has been following the farmers’ protests since the last five months. “Before starting boxing, I would often assist my father in our fields. I would accompany him to the mandis. Since then, while the price of oil has risen multiple times, the same cannot be said for the minimum support price. Along with the new laws, the farmers are asking guaranteed MSP by private companies. Many farmers in my village are still asking for suitable price for their farmland taken for national highways and such issues also need to be addressed. The Arjuna award is given for excellence in sports but the farmer in me has decided to give back the award to the central government,” said Jaipal Singh.

You two left us without even saying goodbye. There are no words in any language that can even closely explain our heartache and helplessness to accept the reality. The one thing that reassures us is the realization that you two must be in a much better place. You grew up together, laughed and cried together, and now you are together with God. Whenever we look up at the twinkling glitters of the night sky, we’ll think of you and remember this saying, “Perhaps they are not stars but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones shines down to let us know they are happy.” It is with deep sense of gratitude and indebtedness that we the bereaved family members of Late Lichumbemo Kikon and Late Chenibemo Kikon would like to acknowledge the tremendous acts of kindness, consideration, humanity, generosity and serviceability shown towards our family following the unfortunate tragedy that befell us on 19th of November 2020. beats Torres; extends NE beat E. Bengal 2-0; climb to 2nd spot in ISL Phogat unbeaten pro MMA record
New Delhi, Dec 5 (Agencies): NorthEast United FC piled further misery on SC East Bengal with a 2-0 win in their Indian Super League encounter at the Tilak Maidan, Goa. A Surchandra Singh (33’) own goal and an injury-time strike from Rochharzela (90’) helped the Highlanders remain unbeaten and climb to second spot in the league table, reports scroll.in. East Bengal are yet to score in the league. SCEB will be disappointed that a good display did not lead to points, with a couple of key refereeing decisions going against them. SCEB coach Robbie Fowler made a solitary change to his starting XI which suffered a 0-3 defeat to Mumbai City FC with Sehnaj Singh coming in place of Daniel Fox. NEUFC coach Gerard Nus continued to shuffle his squad making five changes to the side that drew against FC Goa. Gurmeet, Ashutosh Mehta, Mashoor Shereef, Kwesi Appiah and Ninthoinganba Meetei were back in the playing eleven. SCEB were clearly the better side in a dour first half but they failed to translate their dominance into scoring. Their first opportunity arrived in the
NEUFC defender’s arm before being parried by the keeper. Sylla had a chance to settle the game in the 71st minute but with just the keeper to beat, the Guinean’s shot went wide. But NEUFC eventually doubled their lead off a late counter attack. Suhair Vadakkepeedika picked out Rochharzela in the box and the youngster found the back of the net to end SCEB’s hopes.

4th minute from a Jacques Maghoma free-kick but Scot Neville’s header from the near-post fell into Gurmeet Singh’s arms. Fowler must have thought his side had a penalty in the 20th minute when Maghoma, after taking a touch in the box, was tripped by Mehta. It looked like a clear foul but the referee waved play on. NEUFC continued to hit their opponents on the counter as they had in previous matches. And that tactic paid off at the half-hour mark when they took the lead in a fortuitous manner. Appiah made a
fine run on the right flank and found Sylla in the box. The striker failed to make good contact, but the ball deflected off defender Surchandra Singh’s leg and rolled into the goal. The second half continued with the same intensity with both teams going on the attack early on. SCEB keeper Debjit Majumder was forced into action early in the second half with Appiah and Sylla both testing him. At the hour mark, SCEB had another penalty claim when Anthony Pilkington’s shot at goal seemed to have brushed a
Despite rising costs, Japanese PM promises on delivering Olympics Tokyo, Dec 5 (IANS): Despite the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games costing the Japanese economy an additional 294 billion yen ($2.8 billion or over Rs 20,000 crore), Japan’s prime minister Yoshihide Suga has reiterated that the government will spare no effort to make the Games a success. The Tokyo Olympic Games, which were scheduled to be held in 2020, had to be postponed to 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The games are now set to open on July 23, 2021. “I expressed my strong determination to host the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games in the summer of next year as proof that humanity has defeated the pandemic,” Suga said during a video speech at the United Nations General Assembly. get given by the organising committee in December 2019, months before the Games were postponed, was $16.9 billion. But now Tokyo 2020 will also have to fall back on a contingency fund, which was mentioned in last year’s budget to cover the costs. “Tokyo’s costs are Tokyo’s costs,” Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto was quoted as saying. “To-
kyo 2020’s (allocation) is revenue that we can secure. Within this revenue we have additional sponsorship that we have requested from partners and we also have insurance.” About two-thirds of the added costs is being picked up by the government, with the other onethird going to the privatelyfunded organising committee.

Saunders beats Murray to retain WBO title
Saunders was never really troubled as he hurt his opponent multiple times during the bout.
L o nd o n , D e c 5 (Agencies): Billy Joe Saunders beat fellow Briton Martin Murray by unanimous decision to successfully retain his WBO super-middleweight crown at Wembley Arena. According to BBC, it was the 30th win of his undefeated professional career for Saunders, who entered the world title bout rated a heavy 1-25 favourite by bookmakers.
Saunders took the fight 120-109 120-109 118-110 on the judges’ cards. The 31-year-old is now eyeing the winner of Callum Smith’s bout with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on December 19. “I’ve been out over a year and it’s like boxing in the cemetery,” said Saunders. “I like to perform for the crowd and I tried to set a rhythm but he is a cunning old fox and he ties you up
well. “I probably needed the rounds going into the New Year and I hope he has a good Christmas and he goes back to his family. The main thing is I’m 30-0.” It was Murray’s fifth unsuccessful shot at a world title and the 38-year-old conceded afterwards it may be his last fight. Saunders delivered a controlled and confident display, finding success with uppercuts and body shots
as the southpaw dominated the early exchanges. Murray stumbled to the canvas in the fourth round and, though a knockdown was not called, the veteran fighter clearly felt a powerful combination from Saunders. “It was a clear knockdown,” said Saunders. “That could have changed the entire fight, if it was called a knockdown.” Murray connected with a jab in the seventh and was competitive throughout, despite saying his back went in round eight, but Saunders was the dominant fighter and remained disciplined for the 12 rounds. Saunders said afterwards his next outing “has to be a big fight”. He was close to securing a fight with Alvarez in May before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The Her tfordshire fighter was then considered as an opponent for the Mexican in September, but withdrew from talks, suggesting that he did not want to go into such a fight without adequate preparation, even if offered significant money. Instead, fellow Briton Smith agreed to face Alvarez at short notice later this month.
Ritu Phogat beat Philippines’ Jomary Torres via technical knockout in round one of ONE Championship ( Phogat Twitter)
New Delhi, Dec 5 (Agencies): Indian wrestler-turned-mixed martial arts fighter Ritu Phogat won her fourth consecutive MMA championship title in Singapore. The 26-yearold Indian beat Philippines’ Jomary Torres via technical knockout in round one of ONE Championship (ONE) at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, reports The Indian Express. Ritu “The Indian Tigress” Phogat was triumphant once again, stopping the Philippines’ Jomary “The Zamboanginian Fighter” Torres in the opening bout. Torres stunned Phogat with straight punches early on, causing the latter to shoot for a takedown. On the mat, Phogat was the
picture of perfection, swiftly moving into a mounted crucifix to end the bout with elbows from the top. Using her hammerfists and her elbow she not only rendered her harmless and defenceless but made sure this was the most dreaded fight of her career. Maintaining her pro MMA 4-0 record, Phogat in the post-match presser said, “I am constantly pushing my boundaries in the circle and the match with Jomary bore witness to the same. I am so fortunate to have got the opportunity to fight her at the ONE: Big Bang. Although this was not an easy match, I know I have bigger challenges to combat in future. My next focus is
securing the top spot at the ONE Women’s Atomweight Grand Prix tournament and I am working relentlessly to bring the glory home. I had to miss my sister’s wedding for the match and have really sacrificed to get to this level. I am really looking forward to visit home for a couple of weeks now although I don’t want it to hamper my training.” My heart is in the right place and my passion is undeterred to expedite India’s run in the MMA space. We must have started late but I’ll ensure that we get there sooner than the others! I wish to start an academy for MMA athletes in India down the line, although that vision may take some time to transform into reality.”
Napoli renames stadium after Maradona L o nd o n , D e c 5 (Agencies): Napoli have renamed their stadium after late club legend Diego Maradona. Former Argentina attacking midfielder and manager Maradona, who died aged 60 in November, led the Italian side to two Serie A titles, in 1987 and 1990. The Stadio San Paolo will now be known as the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, after the Napoli city council approved the resolution, reports BBC. Napoli owner Aurelio de Laurentiis proposed renaming the stadium in an open letter after Maradona’s death. The mayor of Naples, Luigi de Magistris, also backed the idea. Maradona spent seven years at Napoli after joining from Barcelona in 1984, also winning the 1987 Coppa Italia and 1989 Uefa Cup with the Italian club. Fans gathered at the
Mick Schumacher on brink of F2 title in Bahrain
MANAMA, Dec 5 (Reuters): Mick Schumacher stood on the brink of winning the Formula Two championship after Saturday’s penultimate race of the season in Bahrain left the German 14 points clear of sole title rival Callum Ilott with a maximum 17 still available. The top two are now the only drivers in contention for the title, with Saturday’s race won by Red Bull and Honda protege Yuki Tsunoda ahead of China’s Guanyu Zhou and Schumacher’s future Haas team mate Nikita Mazepin.

FIFA approves measure to protect women footballers
New Delhi, Dec 5 (Agencies): Football governing body, FIFA on Friday approved landmark measures to protect women footballers. The FIFA Council approved new rules, including a minimum 14week paternity leave for female players -- with at least eight weeks after birth, reports NDTV. After the completion of a player’s maternity leave, her club will be under an “obligation to reintegrate her” into football activity and “provide adequate ongoing medical support”. “The players are the protagonist of the game, they are the most important part of the game and we have to make sure that we set the stage for them to shine. When it comes to female players, we should bring more stability to their careers. For example, if they need to take a maternity leave, then they don’t have to worry,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a video tweeted on the governing body’s Twitter handle. “If we are serious about boosting the women’s game, we have to look at all these aspects,” he added.
Female players will now get 14-week paternity leave.
Without providing too many details, the FIFA president said new rules would also be introduced to give greater stability to coaches. “Coaches develop how we play and inspire the players, they too need job security and we have established minimum standards to protect them,” he said. The mandatory 14week maternity leave would see players guaranteed a minimum two-thirds of their contracted salary, while
FIFA also made it harder for clubs to part company with pregnant players, saying “no female player should ever suffer a disadvantage of any sort on the basis of her pregnancy”. The revamped FIFA Club World has been pushed back further. FIFA, in a media release, said that a Club World Cup, in the current format with seven teams, be organised for late 2021 and the hosting rights for this competition be awarded to Japan.
