SKM threatens to resume stir NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (PTI): Samyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of farm unions that spearheaded protests against the Centre’s agri laws, on Monday threatened to resume its agitation if the government does not fulfil promises made to farmers in December last year. In a statement, the SKM alleged that the government had not fulfilled any of the promises, including setting up a committee on minimum support price (MSP) and withdrawal of cases against protesters, made to the farmers. “The Morcha warns the BJP government against challenging the farmers’ patience, and declares that if the promises are not fulfilled at the earliest, the farmers will be left with no option but to resume the agitation," the SKM said. The statement said it should be noted that none of the assurances given by the central government in its letter to the SKM dated December 9, 2021, has been fulfilled. Following the call of the SKM, farmers across the country observed “Day of Betrayal” on Monday over the Centre's non-fulfilment of its promises.

KOHIMA, JAN 31 (NPN): While deliberating on Manipur polls where the NPF is putting up ten candidates, the Working Committee (NPF) on Monday resolved to invite chief minister Neiphiu Rio with all NDPP legislators to join hands together in order to effectively address the issues confronting the people at the present juncture. This was among the three-point resolution adopted at the NPF Working Committee meeting, held at the NPF central office in Kohima on Monday. NPF and NDPP “should come together.” Kikon expressed the hope that the chief minister would “apply his best wisdom for the good of all of us.” Asked whether the invitation meant merger of NPF and NDPP, Kikon refused to be drawn into it but only said: “Politics is the art of the possible. Everything is and can be possible.” He reiterated that since it was the wish of the Nagas for the two parties to come together, both have to explore the best possible option on how to come together. “The dynamics of politics is changing and everyone has to adapt with the changing time. So, we have a strong opinion that the desire of our people should be respected,” he said. The Working Committee also declared that the party would be fielding 10 candidates for the up-

KOHIMA, JAN 31 (NPN): Close on the heels of the eviction drive at Balijan near Nagaland-Assam border area on Sunday, a joint delegation of the Naga Students Federation (NSF) and Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) met the Karbi Students Associa-
tion (KSA) and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) chief executive member at the latter’s official residence in Diphu on Monday. Informing this in a video statement, NSF president Kegwayhun Tep said the NSF and DNSU delegation held a spot verification at Balijan ‘C’ Khel on
January 31 after which they held a meeting with the KSA and CEM and submitted a two-point charter of demands. According to Tep the demands include-- compensating the affected families and to allow them to resettle in their rightful place without any further disturbances. They also appealed KAAC that Nagas living in the border areas, within the jurisdiction, were not threatened and that their means of livelihood be restored. Though it was not a fruitful meeting, Tep said that the chief executive member had assured them that the eviction would be kept on hold for some time.
F u r t h e r, N S F a n d DNSU vehemently condemned the incident during the eviction drive by the KAAC during which two churches and 23 households were destroyed leaving many families homeless. Tep said that they came to learn about this when NSF and DNSU delegation held a spot verification soon after the eviction drive on Sunday. NSF and DNSU appealed to the churches, particularly Dimapur-based churches, to come forward and provide relief to the affected families. They also appealed to the Nagas to maintain peace and tranquillity, particularly those living in the border areas.
DIMAPUR, JAN 31 (NPN): Wester n Sumi Hoho (WSH) has appealed to all organisations, unions and Naga political groups (NPGs) to extend total cooperation by stopping all forms of fund/donation drives and taxations within its jurisdiction in Dimapur and the two newly-created districts of Chümoukedima and Niuland. WSH president Shikaho Zhimomi and general secretary Kisheto Chishi in a press release said the appeal was being made to give the people and the younger generation a chance to explore themselves to their full potential, to redeem themselves and enable good and undiluted devel-
opment to get a foothold in the land. They pointed out that the appeal was made to all so that the people did not miss the bus of development and prosperity that beckoned them today. In order to make a beginning, they said Western Sumi Hoho had on January 18 held a consultative meeting with all its executive heads and area chairmen under its jurisdiction covering Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts, whereby it was resolved to bring about and create an environment of peace and security conducive for germination of ideas and wholesome development. coming Manipur elections scheduled to be held on two phases- first phase on February 27 and second phase on March 3. Kikon said that more than 40 candidates had applied for NPF ticket and that after studying the prospects of winning double-digit tickets and after extensive exercise, the party decided to zero down to give tickets to ten aspirants in the Naga dominated areas. Though there are 11 constituencies, Kikon said NPF had left one constituency uncontested as it was not able to find a strong candidate. Kikon said that the NPF and BJP, which are allies of the coalition government in Manipur, will have friendly contests in several seats. NPF candidates include-- Chandel A/C: Langhu Paulhring Anal, Tengnoupal A/C: Dangsawa Korungthang Maring, Phungyar A/C: Leishiyo Keishing, Ukhrul A/C: Ram Muviah, Chingai A/C: Khashim Vashum, Karong A/C: Koho Siile Anthony, Mao A/C: Lasii Dikho, Tadubi A/C: M. Economic Survey projects 8-8.5% growth in FY23 NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (PTI): India will retain its tag of the world's fastestgrowing major economy as the pre-Budget Economic Survey on Monday forecast an 8-8.5 per cent Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in the fiscal year starting in April, saying it has the fiscal space to do more to support the economy and is well placed to meet the future challenges. India is poised to wrest the title world-beating economy tag this fiscal with a projected growth of 9.2 per cent, and the widespread vaccine coverage, supply-side reforms and easing of regulations are going to support it in the next. The Economic Survey -- an annual report card of the economy -- presented in Parliament by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, warned about risks from global inflation and pandemic-related disruptions. The union finance minister is expected to announce plans to boost spending to revive investment and create jobs in her Budget to be presented on Tuesday.

Naga Political Groups celebrate ‘43rd NSCN Raising Day’
FA key to honourable Naga solution: Tuccu Neokpao pays tribute to Naga patriots NSCN (Akato) reiterates stand on unilateral CF
DIMAPUR, JAN 31 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) said the Framework Agreement (FA), which called for establishing a new relationship for peaceful co-existence of the two entities on the basis of shared sovereignty, was the key to an honourable and acceptable Naga solution. In his message on the occasion of 43rd NSCN Raising Day, NSCN (I-M) chairman Q Tuccu explained that the political significance of FA lay in the fact that Government of India and NSCN had agreed to establish a
new relationship for peaceful coexistence on the basis of shared sovereignty, which was the key to an honourable and acceptable solution for a durable peace. He asserted that NSCN (I-M) was totally against economic packages or imposed political packages as these did not give Nagas a lasting solution, while reiterating the organisation’s stand that Nagas would abide by the principles of FA. He said that there was no other way and that NSCN (I-M) would stand firm with the agreement. (Full speech on p-6)

NSCN/GPRN (Akato) observed the 43rd Raising Day at an undisclosed location. NSCN/ GPRN president Akato Chophi said that though there may be change in leadership, cadres and sometimes even slight structure and system according to changes of time, but ideology, goal and the Naga cause will remain the same. In statement issued through its MIP, Akato, referring to the cease fire said their stand was “crystal clear and we have already made our points on Nov.19th 2021, declaring unilateral ceasefire
with GoI, so now the decision is in the hands of GoI.” He also added that it was not the bone of contention nor an end and means to all “whether we sign ceasefire or not” since there are “many other options so as to carry on with the cause”. Akato said his group wanted to honour the people’s desire for peace, but cautioned that if the “odds are not in our favour, then so be it”. He said CF “is not a priority to us, but keeping the flame of Naga inspirations is the topmost priority”. (Advt on p-3, message on p-6) K Y M C

KO H I M A , JA N 3 1 (NPN): A conference on Government e-Marketplace (GeM) under the theme “Governance for Growth” was held at Hotel Japfu, Kohima on Monday. The conference was organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and attended by entrepreneurs from across the State. It may be noted that GeM portal was launched on August 9, 2016, for online purchases of goods and services by all the central government ministries and departments. Delivering speech at the conference, commissioner and secretary, Department of Industries & Commerce, Kekhrievor Kevichusa said for central government, purchase from GeM has been made compulsory unlike Nagaland. He said the state was still at a level of onboarding sellers and departments as buyers. Therefore, more sensitization was needed on GeM not just for the government but for handholding the prospective sellers also, he added. Kekhrievor said that GeM was introduced because central government faced a lot of problem in purchasing from DGS&D due to artificial or unreal-

istic prices, service delivery and after sale services. However, in GeM after sale service has been made easy, sellers from bigger cities have now tied up with local vendors who can assist them. Pointing out that there will be issue if the State go for large scale buying, he said state government was trying to bring local sellers on board first and buy local. Kekhrievor said that through GeM, the Department of Industries & Commerce was interested in the handloom and handicraft sector to access the market beyond Nagaland without having a retail store in other parts of India. He therefore called on the local entrepreneurs and government departments to avail this opportunity to sell local and buy local, and requested the ICC for help and support in registration of local entrepreneurs. Chief Executive Of-
ficer, Investment & Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN), Alemtemshi Jamir while emphasizing on the role and scale that e-commerce will play in the growth of economy, pointed out that at present seven of the top ten world’s richest people were dealing in e-commerce business. He lamented that majority of the people were not aware of the implication or opportunities of e-commerce, and encouraged the entrepreneurs to register in GeM. Jamir said that Yellow Chain was set up by IDAN for small business to sell their services and goods, and at present around 400500 have registered. He said that some business were doing well in Yellow Chain and added it can become bigger with the involvement of everyone. He further exhorted the young entrepreneurs to be more aware, efficient, absorptive, receptive and adaptive to the rapid changes taking place in the market economy. Joint director, MSME Development Institute, Dimapur, Ministry of MSME, Government of India, Tali Longchar, IEDS explained the importance of registering in GeM. Numerous corporations and organisations gave virtual presentations on GeM.

M’laya HM denies intel failure on blast; 1 arrested
Correspondent SHILLONG, JAN 31: Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday dismissed any “intelligence failure” in the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast outside an Electronic Centre in the State capital on Sunday evening. “If it was an intelligence failure the police would have not been able to nab the culprits in a few hours time (after the blast),” he said, informing the arrest of a juvenile who carried out the blast. Rymbui said one more person have been picked up for questioning in connection with the blast and more suspects are under the police radar. “The police have identified vulnerable areas in the state and are using modern technology to help in their investigation. All persons involved would be arrested and the police would get to the bottom of the issue,” the Home Minister said. M e a n w h i l e, t h e 17-year-old-boy, who was arrested hours after the blast, has admitted his
Lahkmen Rymbui involvement in carrying out the blast and claimed himself to be the “Area Commander of Shillong Region” of the HNLC, a police official said. During the interrogation, police said, the arrested juvenile also revealed of a crude IED which he had hidden at his relatives’ residence located at Nongthymmai. The bomb was safely defused and duly seized in the presence of independent witnesses, the police informed Police have the registered a case under various sections of the IPC and Explosive Substances Act. Manipur polls: BJP MLA, 2 other leaders join Congress Correspondent
IMPHAL, JAN 31: After four BJP ticket seekers joined the Janata Dal (United), three aspirant candidates including a sitting BJP MLA joined the Congress, while five including another sitting BJP MLA switched to National People’s Party (NPP), having failed to secure tickets for Manipur assembly polls. State Congress welcomed the joining of BJP MLA P Saratchandra Singh, former minister Ningthoujam Biren and Ningthoujam Joykumar Singh to the party fold at a function held Imphal Congress Bhavan. Former minister N Biren was among the BJP ticket seekers to contest the election from Sekmai AC of Imphal West district which the BJP offered the ticket to its sitting MLA H Dingo Singh. N Joykumar, who contested on BJP ticket in the 2017 election to the state Assembly from Bishnupur AC denied the same as the party offered to former Congress MLA K Govindas who defected to the BJP after resigning as president of MPCC as well as from MLA. Attending the func-
tion felicitating the three new comers, former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh said that the manner the BJP selected its candidates itself hinted that the party was afraid of defeating in the ensuing polls. BJP has been fooling the people all these years with false propagandas. Except changing the names, the party had not introduced any new projects and schemes, he added. “As the people have now realized the facts, the BJP fears losing the elections this time,” he said. MPCC president N Loken Singh and CWC member Gaikhangam were among others who attended the reception function. On the other hand, MPCC leaders said that the party was preparing for announcing the second list of candidates to be in the fray in the ensuing elections. A probable list of the candidates prepared by the MPCC was tabled in a virtual meeting held with AICC leaders including its president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday. The list is likely to release late Monday evening with the approval of the election committee of the AICC, they said.
did not cause any injuries, but damaged the wall and shattered the shutter of an Electronic Centre owned by Lajong electronics to sustain the operations of the Shillong Lajong Football Club. Shillong Lajong FC CEO & Managing Director, Mr. Larsing Ming Sawyan said that 25 per cent of the proceeds of sale from gadget store goes towards development of football club. In an emailed statement, HNLC general secretary cum publicity secretary, Saiñkupar Nongtraw said the explosion was carried out on Sunday evening to ensure that there was no injury to people. “The motive behind the blast was because there
could be a show of strength from non-indigenous traders at Khyndailad who have rejected to pay ‘taxes’ to the HNLC,” Nongtraw said. Meanwhile, condemnations have poured in from all quarters with M e g h a l aya A s s e m b ly Speaker Methbah Lyngdoh saying the incident is “unfortunate and sad. “Such violence would not be tolerated in which innocent lives are affected,” he added. Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma said the state was peaceful when he was the Chief Minister in 2018. “A blast at the heart of the state capital is very dangerous. What is happening Mr. Conrad Sangma? Didn’t we hand over a peaceful state? Have you shunted out all the dedicated, efficient police officers at the cost of people’s interest,” Sangma asked. Former Home Minister and Senior Congress leader, Robert G. Lyngdoh said the Sunday’s blast is to create fear among the traders. “This is a tactic used before by militants to bully soft targets. The next step
will be to send extortion notes with the threat that the next blast will be targeted at individuals,” he said. Lyngdoh urged the traders to invest the money instead in installing hidden CCTVs in an around their establishments and residences so that the potential perpetrators can be identified. “Paying these militants will be like feeding tiger cubs who will turn into man eaters tomorrow,” the former Home Minister said. Lyngdoh also asked the State government to identify the reasons leading to the frustration among the youth. “These reasons should then be addressed and the youth should see that concrete steps are being taken to ensure they have a secure future,” Lyngdoh said. “Legislators, across party lines, and bureaucrats, should join hands to tackle the problems faced by the rural and urban youth,l he said, adding that educated and skilled youth should also be roped in to strategisze and find viable short term and long term solution.

GUWAHATI, JAN 31 (AGENCIES): Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday hinted that all schools could resume physical classes by February 15 in view of the decline in COVID-19 cases of late. The state government had, on January 7 last, ordered closure of all government and private schools for students up to Class 5 and up to Class 8 in Kamrup Metro district till January 30, amid the spurt in COVID cases, in all probability triggered by the Omicron variant, Shillong Times reported. In the interim, the schools had been imparting classes through the virtual mode, as was recommended in the modified guidelines. Addressing mediapersons on the sidelines of a programme in Dhemaji, the chief minister stated that the COVID situation was being monitored closely and that quite a substantial decline in cases has been seen. “So I believe that the educational institutions could resume physical classes by February 15 if the situation improves further,” he said.

In regard to the night curfew, Sarma said that it would be relaxed by an hour and commence from 11 pm once the daily COVID cases drop below 1000 cases in the state. The revised guidelines, currently effective, had imposed stricter restrictions, with night curfew clamped from 10pm to 6am, while business and commercial establishments had to close by 9pm. “So far, about 9 lakh students (in the age group of 15 years to 18 years) have been vaccinated in the state and it is convenient for a greater number of students to get vaccinated if schools are open,” the chief minister observed. Sarma further in-
formed that the state health department would try to complete administering both doses of the COVID vaccine among students (1518 age group) by February 28, 2022. Students of Classes 9 to 11, however, had been attending physical classes in the interim on rotation mode (three days a week) while students of Class 12, engineering colleges, medical colleges, and technical institutes have been attending offline classes regularly. According to the bulletin of the National Health Mission, Assam reported 910 new COVID-19 positive cases on Sunday, which is a decline by over 1,300 cases compared to the previous day.

if possible, will be conducted on virtual platforms. Additionally, all public servants will have to submit their vaccination certificates in their respective offices, the new order stated. Bars, restaurants, gyms, swimming pools, cinema halls, and auditorium would continue to operate at 50 per cent occupancy. Physical classes will be allowed for those students who have taken the first dose of the vaccine. Schools have been told to function with not more than 50 per cent occupancy in well-ventilated classrooms. Weekly markets would remain suspended for the time being, the order said, adding that
mass and religious gatherings and events in indoor or closed spaces will be allowed for vaccinated individuals, provided the occupancy at the venue does exceed 50 per cent. M e a n w h i l e , Arunachal Pradesh on Monday registered 129 new COVID-19 cases, which raised the tally to 324, a senior official said. The toll in the northeastern state remained unchanged at 286 as no casualty was reported in the past 24 hours, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said. Altogether, 58,848 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 324 in the past 24 hours, Jampa stated. Of the 129 new cases,
66 were registered in the Capital Complex Region, 13 in Lohit and 10 in Papumpare. While 107 new cases were detected through rapid antigen test, 19 were done with RT-PCR and three via TrueNAT, Jampa said. Arunachal Pradesh currently has 2,948 active cases. A total of 12,36,736 samples have been tested in the state so far, 550 of them on Sunday, Jampa stated. The positivity ratio dipped to 23.45 per cent from 25.54 per cent the previous day, the SSO added. According to State Immunisation Officer Dr Dimong Padung, as many as 15,75,054 people have been inoculated with antiCOVID vaccines thus far.
Tripura logs 79 new Covid cases; schools, colleges reopen AGARTALA, JAN 31 (PTI): Tripura’s daily Covid-19 cases dropped to 79 on Monday from 186 a day before, while the overall infection tally increased to 1,00,221, a health department official said here. The North-eastern state registered four fresh fatalities taking the death toll to 896. All schools, colleges and universities opened from Monday after a gap of one month in Tripura. Altogether 186 Covid positive
cases were confirmed out of 4945 samples on Sunday while the test positivity rate was 3.54 per cent. A total of 2,238 samples were tested for coronavirus on Monday, out of which 79 came out positive. West Tripura district reported the highest infection count at 30. As many as 94,950 patients have recovered from the disease in the 24 hours, the official said. As the number of Covid cases decreases in the state, normal aca-
demic activities began in all schools, colleges and universities. “As per the government’s decision, academic activities resumed in all government, governmentaided and private schools because of a steep decline in Covid positive cases,”, a senior official of the Education department said. The authorities were asked to strictly maintain Covid appropriate behaviour in their institutes, he added.
Won’t part border areas under sattras: ASM GUWAHATI, JAN 31: Asom Sattra Mahasabha (ASM), the umbrella organisation for sattras (Vaishnavite monasteries) of Assam, has threatened to launch an agitation, and even move the Gauhati High Court “if border areas under sattras of the state are handed over to Meghalaya as part of the give-and-take agreement to resolve the decades-long interstate border row. According to Shillong Times, the Mahasabha threat comes at a time when both Assam and Meghalaya have arrived at a “98 per cent consensus” on six areas of difference. Mahasabha sources have expressed concern claiming that a “considerable portion of land housing two sattras and over 20 naamghars (Vaishnavite prayer houses) along the Assam-Meghalaya border might go to the neighbouring state, and that Vaishnavite communities inhabiting the villages might lose their identity, culture and even religion if they decide to be part of Meghalaya.” Speaking with The Shillong Times here on Sun-

Sonari Naamghar at Bhalakhowa, Borabhogdiya Gosair Namghar (Ou Guri) besides villages such as Umsur, Ranibari, Xalser, Lungkhar, housing several rajohuwa (public) naamghars,” Mahanta claimed. The Mahasabha general secretary further appealed to the Assam government to introspect, safeguard the identity of the Vaishnavite Assamese communities and ensure that the villages inhabited by these communities on the interstate border are retained in Assam. “In case the decision to hand over the same under
the agreement stands, we will appeal to organisations and people to join us and take the agitation route. If things do not work out thereafter, we will move Gauhati High Court seeking revocation of the deal,” he threatened. Representatives of the Mahasabha had carried out an extensive ground survey along the border areas from Rani in Kamrup district to South Salmara near the Bangladesh border and interacted with various indigenous Vaishnavite communities such as Rabha, Hajong and Koch, etc. One of the key findings of the survey was that a sizeable population of border villagers (belonging to the Vaishnavite sect) “is ready to be with Meghalaya for the benefits they have been enjoying over the years and the apathy shown by Assam.” “A common grievance among some of the residents is that local legislators from Assam have neither visited the area nor has the state government released any scheme funds for development. On the contrary, they claimed to have got some
benefits from the Meghalaya government,” Mahanta said. “The residents were however cautioned (during the interaction) about the threat to their identity if their religion is converted to Christianity once they are with Meghalaya, else they might not get the benefits from the government.” According to ASM sources, there are more than 1200 sattras and over 10,000 naamghars under the Mahasabha in Assam. Since its inception in 1915, ASM has been ardently engaged in preserving and propagating the religious and socio-cultural teachings of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev. Reportedly, MLA from West Guwahati constituency for five times since 1985, Ramendra Narayan Kalita however, maintains that under the give-andtake agreement, only one naamghar in Boklapara under his constituency would go to Meghalaya, as farm lands of the residents in the area could not be merged with Assam and that a majority of the residents want to be part of the neighbouring state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the media, ahead of the Budget Session 2022, in New Delhi, Monday. (PTI)
discussions of parliamentarians can become an important opportunity for making a global impact, the Prime Minister said. “I hope that all MPs and all political parties will definitely help in taking the country on the path of prog-
ress and in accelerating it by having quality discussions with an open mind,” he said. Modi further said,”...I urge all members of Parliament that elections have their own place and will keep happening... this budget session in a way draws
a blueprint for an entire year and therefore, it is very important.” The more fruitful we make this session with full commitment, there will be a big opportunity in the coming year to take the country to new economic
heights, he said. The session comes ahead of assembly polls from February 10 to March 7 in five states -- Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Goa. The counting of votes would take place on March 10. The session of Parliament is likely to be stormy with opposition parties all geared up to raise farmers’ issues and the border row with China. The opposition is also preparing to unitedly take on the government on the Pegasus snooping row after the New York Times claimed that India purchased the snooping spyware as part of a defence deal with Israel in 2017. Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has already written to Speaker Om Birla for moving a privilege motion against the government and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for “misleading” the House, as the government had denied the charges of “spying” in a statement in Parliament last year.

LU C K N OW, J A N 3 1 (PTI): Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday filed his nomination papers from Karhal seat of UP’s Mainpuri and said the upcoming state Assembly polls will write the country’s history for next century as he appealed to people to defeat negative politics. Yadav said his “mission” is positive politics with progressive thinking. The Samajwadi Party (SP) has declared Akhilesh Yadav as its candidate from the Karhal Assembly seat, which is part of the Mainpuri parliamentary constituency represented by party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. “This nomination is a mission as this UP election will write the country’s history for the next century. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Samajwadi Party, saying mafias and rioters used to be the law unto themselves and enjoyed government patronage under its rule in Uttar Pradesh. In his first virtual poll rally after the announcement of the assembly elections, Modi said while the BJP was working for development, the opposition party wanted to exact ‘’revenge”, but added that the people of Uttar Pradesh are alert to those who have ‘dangai soch’ (rioters’ mentality). He also reached out to farmers and assured them that their sugarcane dues will be cleared at the earliest. Western UP, where voting will take place in the first phase on February 10, is a farm belt and sugarcane is grown in bulk in the area. They also said that the positivity rate is coming down and hospitalisation numbers are also registering a declining trend. “The state officers, however, said that Covid protocol precautions need to be continued to be observed so that no undue spurt takes place due to intense public contact because of heightened political activity,” the Election Commission said in a statement. Inputs from the Union Health Secretary were also taken. The EC said that after a comprehensive review of the present Covid situation in the poll-bound states of Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, it has been decided that no roadshows, ‘padyatras’, and cycle, bike or vehicle rallies and processions will be allowed till February 11. NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (PTI): Elections keep happening but Parliament’s Budget session is very important as it draws a blueprint for the entire year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday and urged all MPs to make it fruitful by holding discussions with an “open mind”. Addressing the media ahead of the start of the session, Modi said it is true that because of frequent elections, sessions and discussions get affected but elections have their own place and will keep happening, and hoped that there are discussions that are free, thoughtful, full of human sensitivities, and with good intent. There are many opportunities for India in today’s global situation and asserted that the country’s economic progress, vaccination program against COVID-19, and India-made vaccines have built trust for it across the globe, he said. In this budget session also the “open-minded”

Eviction drives in Assam
A
ssam has a long history of conflicts and among which has been the anti-foreigner or anti-immigrant feeling that led to the anti-foreigners agitation spearheaded by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) during 1979-85 which eventually concluding in the 1985 Assam Accord. According to the Assam Accord, all foreigners who came to Assam on or after March 25, 1971, and stayed illegally would be detected and steps would be taken to deport them after deleting their names from electoral rolls. How far the Accord has been successful in this regard is a matter of debate. Out of the approximately 50 lakh suspected Bangladeshi-origin immigrants, Assam minister Atul Bora last year admitted that there are nearly 1.4 lakh illegal immigrants identified according to the Assam Accord so far and that authorities have deported around 30,000 of them. This issue pertaining to illegal cross border immigration is the stuff that makes politics in Assam as highly sensitive, volatile and as communally divisive as anything in the region. Even the IMDT Act of 1983 did little to address the apprehensions of the people. In 2016, the BJP came to power riding on these anti-immigrant sentiments. Soon afterwards, it initiated a series of eviction drives. Most evictions have taken place in districts where Muslims of Bengali origin are in a majority. Recent eviction drives in Assam have become more determined especially after the Himanta Biswa Sarma took over as chief minister of the BJP-led coalition. Though it may be a politically done thing for the BJP to target suspected Bangladeshi immigrants; yet the focus of the Himanta government to evict thousands who have settled within forest lands is another matter. The anti-encroachment drive in Assam has also comes nearer to Dimapur at the border area between Balijan (Karbi Anglong) and Dimapur (Nagaland). These eviction drives have aroused indignation among the affected people particularly residents living in Balijan C who claim that they have bought the plots from the descendents of Muligul Khan. Earlier last December 2021, the eviction drive carried in December last year involved 115 dwelling units, including concrete structures and makeshift huts spread across an area covering around 100 bighas of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) revenue land. As per Land Revenue department records of KAAC, a total of 210 bighas of government land had been occupied by doubtful individuals in the area. Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated that his government will continue with eviction drives in areas where the government and forest lands have been encroached upon, but that the government will also ‘survey’ lands available to resettle the evicted. A large number of those affected were Nagas who have settled in Balijan and who claim they had purchased the plots legally and have pattas issued by KAAC authorities. These settlers also claim they are genuine residents of Karbi Anglong and have papers to prove that and besides having their names included in electoral roll. Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio had also written a request letter to Sarma earlier, to consider those who have official land documents which were purchased legally. Despite the Gauhati High Court reportedly staying the eviction of some 30 residents till the case is heard on February 2, the eviction went ahead on January 30. It appears that KAAC has an unwritten policy to discourage Nagas (except Rengmas of Karbi Anglong) from buying land in Karbi Anglong as the former is clubbed under the bracket with illegal immigrants.
DailyDevotion Do You See Your Calling? …separated to the gospel of God… —Romans 1:1
Our calling is not primarily to be holy men and women, but to be proclaimers of the gospel of God. The one all-important thing is that the gospel of God should be recognized as the abiding reality. Reality is not human goodness, or holiness, or heaven, or hell— it is redemption. The need to perceive this is the most vital need of the Christian worker today. As workers, we have to get used to the revelation that redemption is the only reality. Personal holiness is an effect of redemption, not the cause of it. If we place our faith in human goodness we will go under when testing comes. Paul did not say that he separated himself, but “when it pleased God, who separated me…” (Galatians 1:15). Paul was not overly interested in his own character. And as long as our eyes are focused on our own personal holiness, we will never even get close to the full reality of redemption. Christian workers fail because they place their desire for their own holiness above their desire to know God. “Don’t ask me to be confronted with the strong reality of redemption on behalf of the filth of human life surrounding me today; what I want is anything God can do for me to make me more desirable in my own eyes.” To talk that way is a sign that the reality of the gospel of God has not begun to touch me. There is no reckless abandon to God in that. God cannot deliver me while my interest is merely in my own character. Paul was not conscious of himself. He was recklessly abandoned, totally surrendered, and separated by God for one purpose— to proclaim the gospel of God (see Romans 9:3).

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2022
Post-mortem
Speech of NSCN (I-M) chairman, Q. Tuccu on the occasion of 43rd NSCN Raising Day P raise the Lord, Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord!! On this auspicious day let us remember that the Naga political movement was never a smooth sailing. At one occasion in the history, the Naga freedom fighters were undergoing a grueling test of physical and mental fortitude. The Naga nation was tested like never before because it was a question of saving the history and political identity of the Nagas. Let us thank God as He gave the Naga leaders the political wisdom and courage to organize the Naga political struggle under the banner of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN). Thus, God has never failed the Nagas and let us always praise Him for what He is to the Naga political movement under NSCN. Ever since NSCN came into existence we have lost many brave
hearts that made supreme sacrifices embracing martyrdom in defense of our history, our people and our God’s given political identity. They went through a real testing time to face undignified death so that the Nagas may live with dignity. They proved themselves that they are in NSCN for a cause and ready to stand by NSCN till the last drop of their blood. Recently, NSCN’s Naga Army celebrated the Naga Army Day. The Naga Army is the pride of the Naga political movement. NSCN today is standing tall because of the Naga Army. The Naga Ar my should always be prepared to face any eventuality to defend the Naga nation. They should keep in mind that the price of freedom is “eternal vigilance”. Our historical and political rights are cleared
before the world. For the legitimate rights we protected, NSCN was successful in getting Nagalim admitted into UNPO (Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization) as a bona fide member. Today, many international organizations are solidly behind UNPO to support NSCN. Let us be proud of being freedom fighters under the banner of NSCN. “Nagalim for Christ” is our slogan and NSCN must live up to this commitment to work under Christ and with Christ our Lord at all time. My dear brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, today we are placed in a situation which demands our resolve to stand strong and committed. We are being tested again by the Government of India using her mighty Army to apply outrageous violence empowered under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA),
against innocent Naga civilians. What happened at Oting in Mon district of Nagaland where 14 (fourteen) Naga villagers were massacred by the 21st Para Special Forces on the 4th& 5th December, 2021 is one of the most painful incidents in the history of the Naga political struggle. We are with the Oting and Konyak people and together we shall fight for justice. Twenty four (24) years ago the Government of India officially signed the Second Indo-Naga Ceasefire with NSCN, the only legitimate political organization leading the Naga political movement. The Indo-Naga political dialogue that followed is still going on. We have achieved much and it was God who guided us all the way to sign the much hyped historic Framework Agreement on the 3rd August, 2015 with the Government of India directly supervised
by the Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi. The political significance of the Framework Agreement (FA) lies in the fact that the Government of India and NSCN have entered into an agreement to establish a new relationship for peaceful co-existence of the two entities on the basis of shared sovereignty. This is the only key to an honorable and acceptable solution for a durable peace. NSCN is totally against economic packages or imposed political packages as these are far from giving the Nagas the lasting solution. We put on record to reiterate our stand that the Nagas will abide by the principles of the Framework Agreement. There is no other way and we shall remain guarded to stand firm with the Framework Agreement. My dear brothers and sisters, sons and daughters,
on this historic occasion we cannot afford to ignore our tall leaders who are behind forming the NSCN. They are no more with us today. But their spirits continue to linger among us to inspire and uplift our morale to work for the Naga nation with renewed vigor and commitment. Let us follow their footprints. Importantly, let me make it very loud and clear that Naga’s political destiny is in the hands of NSCN. We should, therefore, not allow ourselves to be caught napping. Let us continue to work tirelessly and never forget to praise God as we give Him space to lead Nagalim. Without God leading us we cannot go far enough to defend our rights. May God bless the NSCN and Nagalim! Long live NSCN! Kuknalim! Q. Tuccu
Western Sumi Hoho appeals
T
he celebratory spirit of Christmas and the new year came early for the Western Sumi people with the upgradation of Niuland and Chümoukedima as the 14th and 15th districts of Nagaland respectively. Upgradation or expansion of administrative set ups may not be a guarantee for good governance, but it certainly is justification for obtaining whatever schemes for upgraded setups, but that itself begins and will end there if people of the two new born districts carved out of Dimapur district fail to address the many issues which need to be handled with cooperative wisdom, and if our society is to come out of the shadow of doubt, confusion and conflict. Celebrations are but momentary, and the Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) is deeply aware that the more things change,
the more they remain the same. And this is reason enough for the hoho to seriously ponder over the painful reality that there is so much of poverty and very less of prosperity. For too long, governance has taken a back seat and the problems of the old continues to dominate, and which cannot be wished away unless there is radical change in the life style and thinking of our people. Our society is in drift and the failure of our polity to correct the drift has created an overall negative impact - economically, socially and morally. There is “ism” both socially and politically and it had fractured our society and communities in so many different ways. It is our bounden duty and responsibility to ensure that the root of ism is uprooted in its nascent stage atleast from the
psyche and mind of our children. Our regressive politics riding on the back of culture and tradition will have to give way to the coming together of minds for a contemporary modern approach to living in peace and harmony. Nothing remains a constant except change. And change certainly has come to the Western Sumi areas with the upgradation of Niuland and Chümoukedima as districts. The excitement of the inhabitants of the two new district is palpable and understandable. However, Niuland and Chümoukedima will miss the bus without change in the framework of thinking, doing and living. Niuland and much of proposed Chümoukedima is bereft of any development and therefore will not be starting again afresh, but will have to endure a raw beginning.
Speech of NSCN/GPRN president Akato Friends, Nagas, Compatriots. It was on this day, the 31st January 1980, the formidable banner of NSCN was flown high to defend the ‘Inalienable Sovereign Right’ of the Naga People and to make the World know that Nagas are a free race of people since time immemorial and cannot compromise, repudiate or forfeit our freedom to any forces, come what may. The Naga’s struggle for self determination is simply an act of defense against outside forces and intruders and not an act of ‘Secession or Breaking away’, as rhetorically projected by some protagonist of the enemy of the Nagas, since Nagas were never a part of any Union, and as such, “How can we secede or part ways from something that we are never a part of ???” Hence the defiant act of Nagas is simply a desire to be left alone, and will fight back for liberation against any forces that tries to impose their will upon the free Nagas. Naturally, Nagas are a proud yet a simple and peace loving race of people who does not believe in asserting forceful domination upon others, but at the same time does not also take kindly to bullying or give in to subjugation and repression from other powerful neighbours. These natural inborn instincts were triggered, when some very powerful neighbouring Nation forcefully tried to impose their will upon the Nagas, which as a result gave birth to the ‘Naga National Movement’ and which subsequently made Nagas to declaring Independence on 14th August 1947, maintaining that Nagas will
continue to remain a sovereign Nation and a separate entity. Unfortunately, the invaders and the aggressors of the Naga Nation felt it otherwise and attempted to incur into Naga dominion but was faced by staunch and defiant Nagas leading to bloody confrontations, and which now may perhaps be one of the longest ongoing conflicts in Asia. History can never be rewritten nor distorted, and our History has taught us that Nagas were an Independent people since time immemorial, and no Nation, no matter how mighty or powerful or potent they are, has ever staked claim or could produce records of Nagas ever been annexed into their folds/ union, by conquest, or by invasion or by coercion. The fact is, nowhere in the pages of our History, had the Nagas ever ventured out, stepped or intruded into our Neighbouring territory for provocative intent or offensive misadventure, but on the contrary, we are simply defending our homeland against foreign incursions and external invasions. This day also give us the privilege to remember and salute the selfless sacrifices of our visionary leaders and predecessors who safeguarded our ‘Sovereign Rights’ and passed down their legacy and patriotism for us to cherish and carry on the struggle, till it attains its purpose. This day also enable us to honour and to pay our tributes to our fallen heroes and patriots, who never did hesitate to lay down their own lives whilst in defense of our homeland, that despite being outnumbered, at
least by 1000 to 1 (or more) and armed with only daos, spears and with few locally made muzzle loading guns did bravely fought against one of World’s most powerful Nation armed with machine guns and sophisticated weapons. Countless Nagas, irrespective of age, gender or status had willing laid down their lives for the common Naga Cause. Countless Naga male folks were forced down on their knees and made to bite the dust. Countless Naga women became victims of forceful confinement, rape and humiliations. Countless Naga children were forced into segregations, groupings and tortures. In general, every single Nagas are directly or indirectly victims of hegemony and suppression. It is, however, despite being subjected to such physical afflictions and ordeals, the fortitude minds and spirit of the Nagas could not be broken nor contained, that made our aggressors realise the futility of warfare and which prompted some of their topmost leaders to admit as thus; “Naga issue can never be settled through military might and warfare but only through political approach” Taking the privilege of this Naga uprising day, the NSCN/ GPRN, yet again reiterates to uphold and carry on the legacy of our founding fathers to defending our rights to the last man standing and to the last drain of our blood, whether faced and confronted “by Military or by Political overtures” Akato Chophi
This means creating the primary need to promote entrepreneurial skills and infrastructural facilities. For this to happen, connectivity i.e. good roads must be there. Corruption in all its form and heads has been prevailing till date and is the reason for the deplorable roads that we have today in Niuland district. It is the sum result of why there is abundance of poverty and not prosperity. There cannot be an end without a beginning. In order to make a beginning, the WSH, on the 18th of January, 2022, held a consultative meeting with all its executive heads and area chairman under Western Sumi Hoho jurisdiction covering Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts, whereby it was resolved to bring about and create an environment of peace and security conducive for germination of
ideas and wholesome development. To this end, the WSH makes this fervent appeal to all the organizations, unions and Naga political groups to extend total cooperation by stopping all forms and kinds of fund/ donation drives and taxations within the WSH jurisdiction of the three districts. This is an appeal to give ourselves and the younger generation, a chance to exploit ourselves and our full potential, a chance to redeem ourselves and enable good undiluted development to get a foothold in our land. This is an appeal to all so that we do not miss the bus of development and prosperity that beckons us today. Shikaho Zhimomi President, WSH Kisheto Chishi Gen. Secretary, WSH
Under-eye care for the middle-aged women
D
ark circles’ have been an issue of great concern for women of all ages, but especially those who are in their middle age because they make you look older. If not treated properly, these dark circles can prove to be an age-long problem for many. But what causes them? In an interaction with Harry Sehrawat, Co-Founder, Sanfe, we find out the most common reasons for this. Sehrawat states that the skin under the eyes is thinnest which makes it vulnerable to easy darkening over time. Causes include hyperpigmentation, poor blood circulation, loss of vitamin C. Hyperpigmentation and puffiness are hard to eradicate but there are ways to minimise their appearance, as well as unpack those under-eye bags. He suggests a few tips to tackle the problem: Applying brightening skin creams Given that the skin under the eyes is thinnest, it requires tender treatment. Creams that are rich in Vitamin C, retinoids, and hyaluronic acid are proven to be beneficial in reducing dark patches under the eye. Under eye lightening and Glo Cream An Under eye cream helps in reducing fine lines, dark circles and puffiness while its hydrating ingredients help soothe puffiness. Hydrating molecules draw moisture into the skin for long-lasting hydration. Additionally, this safe and effective formula offers a visible difference in 3-6 weeks. Before choosing the creams, always consult the dermatologist as some products can behave dif-
ferently with different skin types. A cold compress A cold compress goes a long way in reducing puffiness and helps shrink dilated blood vessels. A cold jade roller or ice cubes wrapped inside a muslin cloth can be used for approximately 20 minutes. Dampening a washcloth with cold water also helps when put under the eyes for 20 minutes. This process should be repeated if the cloth becomes warm or if the ice melts. Soaked tea bags Applying cold tea bags under the eyes is another great way to combat dark circles. Tea contains caffeine, and antioxidants that stimulate blood circulation to leave a soothing effect beneath your skin. Soak two black or green tea bags in hot water for five minutes. Then keep it in the refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes. Once the tea bags are cold enough, apply them to your closed eyes for 10 to 20 minutes. Afterwards, rinse your eyes with cool water and keep them closed for another 10 minutes for a long-lasting effect. Add some extra hours to your sleep The easiest yet best remedy to reduce dark circles is sleep. A sleep-deprived eye will always look tired, no matter how much concealer is used. Treatments can be used to treat dark circles but healthy habits go a long way. Eating healthy, staying hydrated, and getting the right amount of sleep is important for your eyes. N. mindset to bolster the country’s economy. Taking a swipe at the previous governments, he said those who did not give priority to women safety, women did not hesitate to remove them from power. The prime minister said his government is working with a zero-tolerance policy for crime against women. Such crimes will attract strict punishment, including capital punishment for heinous cases of rape, he added. “There are fast-track courts and steps like more women helpdesks at police stations, 24-hour helplines, portals to deal with cyber crimes are being taken,”
Modi said. Highlighting the steps taken by the government toward women empowerment, he said both the Make in India and the Self-reliant India initiatives are utilising the skills of women for the country’s progress. In the last seven years, the policies of the country have become more sensitive towards women, Modi noted. “Today, India is among the countries with a provision for maximum maternity leave. The marriageable age for women is being raised to 21 years so that marriage does not become a hindrance in their education and career,” he said.
With 26 weeks, India is one of the countries that give maximum maternity leave to women, the prime minister pointed out. “About 70 per cent beneficiaries under the Mudra Yojana are women and crores of women have started their business using the scheme,” he said. “The milestone of 30 years, whether in the life of an individual or of an organisation, is very important. This is the time for new responsibilities and for moving forward with new energy,” Modi added. He said for centuries, India’s strength has been the local industries or the micro, small and medium
enterprises (MSMEs). “In these industries, women have the same role as that of men. The country has seen a three-fold increase in the number of women self-help groups in the last six-seven years. Similarly, of the over 60,000 startups that have come up after 2016, 45 per cent have at least one woman director,” he said. The prime minister informed that since 2015, 185 women have been honoured with Padma awards and this year too, 34 women figured among the awardees in different categories. “This is a record as so many awards to women are unprecedented,” he said. Modi also talked about the historical distance of rural women from empowerment. He listed steps such as nine crore gas connections and toilets, pucca houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in the name of women, support during pregnancy and Jan Dhan accounts that make women the face of a changing India.
Meeting between Karnataka minister, state Cong chief sparks speculation BENGALURU, JAN 31 (PTI): A meeting between Anand Singh, a minister in the BJP government in Karnataka, and state Congress chief D K Shivakumar at the latter’s residence here on Monday has sparked speculation, amid recent claims by the opposition party leaders that some ruling party leaders, including ministers, were in touch with them. The Minister for Tourism, Ecology and Environment in the Basavaraj Bommai-led cabinet, driving to the KPCC chief ’s residence in a private car has raised eyebrows in political circles, especially the BJP. However, speaking to reporters, Shivakumar and Singh said they had met regarding a tourism project in the Congress leaders’ assembly constituency. “I had seen Tunga aarti. Aimed at developing tourism in our constituency, I had requested for a programme to be worked out so that similar aarti can be organised at the sangam (confluence) of Cauvery and Arkavathi rivers near Mekedatu in my constituency. He (Singh) has said

that he will send a team,” Shivakumar said. Speaking to reporters, while rejecting all political speculation in connection with the meeting, he said, “He (Singh) is a minister. If he has come openly to my house, how can he come with a political motive? No one will do that. Politics is done either at hotels or guest houses, not at home.” “All of us have that much common sense... I am a senior leader. He personally came to explain about the proposed programme. There’s nothing else,” he added. Singh too later in the day, speaking to reporters, said Shivakumar has himself already clarified about the reasons behind the meet-
ing and there nothing more for him to add to it. “While I was on my way back from my brotherin-law’s place, Shivakumar called me to discuss the project, as I was passing nearer to his residence, he called me to visit his house for discussion. Other than this, there was nothing else,” he said, as he in response to a question also clarified that he has no discontent regarding appointment of district in-charge Minister. According to reports, Singh is unhappy with the chief minister’s decision to appoint him as district in-charge minister for Koppal, instead of newly-carved Vijayanagara district, which is his native.

During this door-todoor campaign, Priyanka Gandhi also heard the problems of specially-abled people in Noida’s sector-8 area. NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (PTI): The Congress on Monday said the President’s address to the joint sitting of Parliament at the start of the Budget Session was about the “failures” of the BJP government in fulfilling the promises made so far. Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said the government had promised to construct four crore houses for the poor and double farmers’ income by 2022 but has done nothing about implementing these pledges. He claimed President Ram Nath Kovind’s address has no new thought and is a repeat of the promises that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made. “Whatever they

in Kerala Assembly, V D Satheesan said the I&B ministry banned the telecast without citing reasons. “The banning of telecast of MediaOne channel without citing any reason was undemocratic. This is against natural justice. The Union government has a responsibility to cite the reason behind the ban. The government is trying to implement the agenda of Sangh Parivar which has been intolerant against
unpleasant truths,” he said. He said the ban amounts to attack on media freedom. MediaOne, along with another Malayalam News channel, Asianet, was briefly suspended for 48 hours over their coverage of communal violence in Delhi in 2020, with the official orders then saying they covered the Delhi violence in a manner that “highlighted the attack on places of worship and siding towards a particular community”.

said have not been fulfilled. What Modi Ji has been saying outside, the President repeated those in his address. There is no important issue in the President’s address today and there is no thought too. The President’s address is a speech of the government’s failure,” Kharge told reporters. “The prime minister had made many promises through the President in his address earlier, but none of them has been fulfilled. The government had promised to provide more job opportunities. Thirty-two lakh posts are vacant in the government, but it has not spoken about it,” the senior Congress leader said. Later, in a Twitter post, he said, “What happened to two
crore new jobs per year? Why are vacancies in government jobs not filled? What happened to four crore houses promised to be built? Why hasn’t farmers income doubled? Tomorrow, ‘Hum Do’ will deliver yet another budget suited for ‘Humare Do’ and not for ‘Humare Youth’.” Kharge said the youth are craving for jobs and are fighting for it, and alleged there has been a big scam in this matter. “They had promised to build four crore houses for the poor by 2022 but provided for only two crore houses. The government had also promised to double farmers’ income by 2022, but the government has fulfilled neither of these promises,” he said.

NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (PTI): India is all set to experience below normal temperature over most parts of the country in February, while Punjab and Haryana are expected to get above normal rainfall, the weather office said on Monday. According to the monthly outlook for rainfall and temperature for February, the India Meteorological Department said the forecast suggests that normal to below normal rainfall is most likely over most parts of North India except most parts of Punjab and Haryana where above normal rainfall was expected. “During the month of February 2022, below normal minimum temperatures are most likely over most parts of the country except eastern parts of northeast India, south peninsular India and southeastern parts central India, where normal to above normal minimum temperatures are likely,” it said. “Below normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country except along the eastern and southwestern coastal areas of peninsular India where it is likely to be normal to above normal,” the outlook for February said. It said currently, weak La Nina conditions are prevailing over the equatorial Pacific region. The La Nina weather phenomenon is associated with harsh winter conditions. The latest Monsoon Mission Climate Forecast System (MMCFS) forecast indicates that these La Nina conditions are likely to weaken starting from the northern hemisphere spring season and to reach cold ENSO neutral conditions during the second quarter of 2022. It said IMD has adopted a new strategy for issuing monthly and seasonal outlooks of rainfall and temperature over the country.

NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (PTI): Noting that the role of women in the society is continuously expanding, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the women commissions will have to increase their scope of work and give a new direction to the women of their states. Speaking on the occasion of the 30th foundation day of the National Commission for Women (NCW), the prime minister said the participation of women in the growth cycle of a “new India” is increasing continuously and the commissions should also promote the role of women in entrepreneurship. “Today, the role of women is continuously expanding, so all women’s commissions will also have to increase their scope of work and give a new direction to the women of their states,” he said. Modi said people with old thinking considered the skills of women as a matter of domestic work but it is necessary to change this

“normalisation” plan. Another key vulnerability indicator -- net IIP to GDP ratio -- has declined to (-) 11.3 per cent as against (-) 18.2 per cent in the said period, the survey noted, adding the external debt to GDP ratio has also declined since the taper tanrum of 2013. Besides, it said, India witnessed a current account surplus of 0.9 per cent in the Q1 of 2021-22 on top of similar surplus in 2020-21 after a gap of 17 years. On the other hand, it said, India experienced the highest ever current account deficit of 4.8 per cent of GDP in 2012-13 on the back of an equally large deficit of 4.3 per cent during the previous year (2011-12). Evidently, the Indian economy has exhibited greater resilience so far to the current episode of taper. In the immediate aftermath of the taper tantrum in 2013, it said, India experienced portfolio outflows aggregating to Rs 79,375 crore from capital markets, including Rs 19,165 crore from equity markets and Rs 60,210 crore from debt markets during May 23-August 30, 2013. NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (PTI): With forex reserves of over USD 630 billion and plenty of “policy room” to deal with the situation, India can withstand normalisation of monetary policy by central banks of large economies like the US Federal Reserve, the Economic Survey said on Monday. The survey noted that due to accretion of large foreign exchange reserves in recent months, vulnerability indicators relating to reserves such as reserves to total external debt, reserves to short-term debt (residual maturity) and reserve cover of imports have shown marked improvement in the first half of the current fiscal vis-à-vis FY 2014, the taper tantrum year. Taper tantrum phenomenon refers to the situation in 2013 when emerging markets witnessed capital outflows and spike in inflation after the US Federal Reserve started to put brakes on its quantitative easing programme. The US Federal Reserve has indicated interest rate hikes and other measures aimed at getting inflation under control. It has officially announced the start of its monetary policy

ment debt to rise in 2020-21. However, there has been a strong rebound in government revenues in 2021-22 so far. As per the survey, the government has the fiscal capacity to maintain the support, and ramp up capital expenditure when required. The strong revival in revenues also provides government with fiscal space to provide additional support as well, if necessary, it added. A l s o, t h e b a n k i n g system is well capitalised and the overhang of Non Performing Assets (NPAs) seems to have structurally declined even allowing for some lagged impact of the pandemic. MUMBAI, JAN 31 (PTI): The rupee surged 45 paise to close at 74.62 (provisional) against the US dollar on Monday supported by positive domestic equities and improved risk appetite. At the interbank forex market, the local unit opened strong at 74.97 against the greenback and witnessed an intra-day high of 74.60 and a low of 75.05. It finally settled at 74.62, a rise of 45 paise over its previous close. In the previous session, the rupee had settled at 75.07 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday presented the Economic Survey 202122. As per the pre-Budget Economic Survey, India’s economy is expected to grow by 8-8.5 per cent in the fiscal beginning April 1 and is well placed to meet the future challenges on the back of widespread vaccine coverage, supply-side reforms and easing of regulations. This is the second straight session of gain for the local unit, during which it has added 47 paise against the American currency. On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex ended 813.94 points or 1.42 per cent higher at 58,014.17, while the broader NSE Nifty jumped 237.90 points or 1.39 per cent to 17,339.85.

2020-21. Although the second wave of the pandemic in April-June 2021 was more severe from a health perspective, the economic impact was muted compared to the national lockdown of the previous year. “Advance estimates suggest that GDP will record an expansion of 9.2 per cent in 2021-22. This implies that the level of real economic output will surpass the pre-COVID level of 2019-20,” the survey said. The survey expects private sector investment to pick as financial system is in good position to provide support necessary for speedy revival of the economy. The document authored by a team lead by Principal Economic Adviser Sanjeev Sanyal further said the fiscal support given to the economy as well as the health response caused the fiscal deficit and govern-
to be wary of imported inflation, especially from elevated global energy prices”. “Overall, macro-economic stability indicators suggest that the Indian economy is well placed to take on the challenges of 2022-23. The growth in 2022-23, it said will be supported by widespread vaccine coverage, gains from supplyside reforms and easing of regulations, robust export growth, and availability of fiscal space to ramp up capital spending. “The year ahead is also well poised for a pick-up in private sector investment with the financial system in a good position to provide support to the revival of the economy. Thus, India’s GDP is projected to grow in real terms by 8.0-8.5 per cent in 2022-23,” it said. The projection, according to the survey, is based on the assumption that there will be no further debilitating pandemic related economic disruption, monsoon will be normal, withdrawal of global liquidity by major central banks will be broadly orderly, oil prices will be in the range of USD 70-75 per barrel, and global supply chain disruptions will steadily ease over the course of the year.

NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (PTI): India’s economy is expected to grow by 8-8.5 per cent in the fiscal beginning April 1 and is well placed to meet the future challenges on the back of widespread vaccine coverage, supply-side reforms and easing of regulations, said the pre-Budget Economic Survey on Monday. The Economic Survey 2021-22, tabled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament, expects the economy to grow by 9.2 per cent during the current financial year, indicating a recovery to the pre-pandemic level. The economy had contracted by 7.3 per cent in 2020-21 on account of impact of COVID pandemic and subsequent nationwide lockdowns to check the spread of coronavirus. “Overall, macro-economic stability indicators suggest that the Indian economy is well placed to take on the challenges of 2022-23. One of the reasons that the Indian economy is in a good position is its unique response strategy,” the survey said. North Korea confirms most Russia, US square off at UNSC over Ukraine powerful missile test since 2017
U N I T E D NAT I O N S, JAN 31 (AP): The United States and Russia squared off Monday in the UN Security Council, where Moscow lost an attempt to block a public meeting on Moscow’s troop buildup near Ukraine’s borders and Western fears of an invasion. US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield dismissed a charge by Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia that Washington was trying “to whip up hysterics” and use “megaphone diplomacy” by calling the first Security Council meeting on the crisis. “Imagine how uncomfortable you would be if you had 100,000 troops on your border,” ThomasGreenfield said. The vote on holding an open meeting passed 102, with Russia and China opposed, and three abstentions. The vote needed nine votes to be approved. UN UndersecretaryGeneral for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo then went ahead with an open briefing, to be fol-

lowed by speeches from the 15 council members. U S P r e s i d e n t Jo e Biden said in a statement that the meeting was “a critical step in rallying the world to speak out in one voice” to reject the use of force, seek military de-escalation, support diplomacy and demand accountability from every member “to refrain from military aggression against its neighbours”. The session kicked off more high-level diplomacy this week, although talks between the US and
Russia have so far failed to ease tensions in the crisis. Russia has massed the estimated 100,000 troops near the borders of its southern neighbour, stoking fears in the West of an invasion. Russia denies it intends to launch an attack but demanded that NATO promise never to allow Ukraine to join the alliance, halt the deployment of NATO weapons near Russian borders, and roll back its forces from Eastern Europe. NATO and the US call those demands impossible. Russian Foreign Min-
ister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken didn’t make any visible progress in easing the tensions at their meeting in Geneva earlier this month. They are expected to speak by phone Tuesday, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry. Biden warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a phone call Thursday that there is a “distinct possibility” Russia could begin an incursion in February, but the Ukrainian leader sought to play down the war fears, saying Western alarm over an imminent invasion has prompted many investors in the country’s financial markets to cash out. Zelenskyy said Friday that “we aren’t seeing any escalation bigger than before,” and charged that the Russian buildup could be an attempt by Moscow to exert “psychological pressure” and sow panic. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will visit Ukraine on Tuesday for talks with Zelenskyy, and
will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin later Monday, to urge him to “step back,” Johnson’s office said. Johnson says he is considering sending hundreds of British troops to NATO countries in the Baltic region as a show of strength. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that “hysteria promoted by Washington triggers hysteria in Ukraine, where people are almost starting to pack their bags for the front line”. While Russia could try to block the Security Council meeting if it gets the support of nine of the 15 members, the US was confident it had “more than sufficient support” to hold it, according to a senior official in the Biden administration who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk publicly. Any formal action by the Security Council is extremely unlikely, given Russia’s veto power and its ties with others on the council, including China.
SEOUL, JAN 31 (AGENCIES): North Korea confirmed Monday it had fired its most powerful missile since 2017, capping a month-long blitz of launches that has raised the spectre of leader Kim Jong Un restarting nuclear tests. Pyongyang conducted a record seven weapons tests in January, the most ever in a calendar month, as it threatened to abandon a self-imposed moratorium on launching long-range and nuclear weapons, blaming US “hostile” policy for forcing its hand. North Korean state media said Monday that the country had test-fired a Hwasong-12 intermediaterange ballistic missile, last launched in 2017, which is powerful enough to put the US territory of Guam in range. South Korea and the United States responded to the launch with concerns that long-range missiles and nuclear tests could be next on Kim’s agenda. Pyongyang has “come close to destroying the moratorium declaration,” South

Korean President Moon JaeIn said after an emergency National Security Council meeting Sunday. He noted the North was showing a “similar pattern” to 2017, when it raised regional tensions by launching intermediate-range missiles and following them up with intercontinental ballistic missile tests. A senior Biden administration official said Washington shared the concern. “It’s not just what they did yesterday, it’s the fact that this is coming on
the heels of quite a significant number of tests in this month,” he said. “We obviously don’t want to see further testing and we’ve called upon to DPRK to refrain from further tests,” he added, referring to North Korea by the initials of its official name. South Korea said the Sunday test was of an “intermediate range ballistic missile” that flew around 800 kilometres (497 miles) and reached a maximum altitude of 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles).
Syria reports new Israeli Christians mourn targeted killing of pastor in Pakistan missile barrage near Damascus
DAMASCUS (SYRIA), JAN 31 (AGENCIES): Syrian air defenses confronted Israeli missiles targeting an area near the capital, Damascus, downing some of them, Syria’s state news agency reported Monday. SANA cited a military source as saying the missiles came from the skies over eastern Lebanon, and targeted outposts in the vicinity of Damascus, resulting in material losses. No other details were immediately available, and there was no comment
from Israel on the attack which occurred shortly after 3 a.m. in Damascus. Israel carries out raids on Syria mostly overnight. An opposition warmonitoring group said the strikes targeted arms depots of Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah group in the eastern part of the Qalamoun mountains, northeast of Damascus. The Britainbased Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the strikes ignited fires but had no immediate word on any casualties. Israel has staged hun-
dreds of strikes on targets inside government-controlled parts of Syria over the past decade of the civil war in the Arab country, but rarely acknowledges or discusses such operations. Israel has acknowledged, however, that it is targeting bases of Iranallied militias, such as Hezbollah. It says it is going after positions and arms shipments believed to be bound for the groups. Hezbollah is fighting on the side of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces in the country’s civil war.
ISLAMABAD, JAN 31 (IANS): The Christian community in Pakistan’s Peshawar has shut down all educational institutions and churches after a pastor was shot dead by armed assailants. As per details shared by police authorities, William Siraj, who was a pastor at a church within the Chamkani police station limits, was with his fellow priest at the Ring Road area on Sunday, when the unknown assailants opened fire. Siraj died on the spot, while the accompanying priestwas later taken to the Lady Reading hospital. “The incident occurred

near Ring Road within Gulbahar police station limits. A heavy police contingent had reached the scene and a search operation was carried out. Evidence was collected from the crime
scene and CCTV cameras are also being checked,” a statement issued by the police authorities said. “The body had been shifted to the hospital for conducting an autopsy
while further investigation was underway.” As per initial details of the investigation, at least two assailants were involved in the incident, which the police have termed it as a terrorist attack. “Attack on the Christian community was tragic. A comprehensive investigation has been launched. It can be said that members of the minority community were targeted. So, it was a terrorist act,” said Abbas Ahsan, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO). “We are determined to protect minorities. A team consisting of officials from the Counter Terrorism De-
partment (CTD) and Peshawar police had been formed to probe the case,” he added. The attack carries sensitive importance, as the Christian community, which has been living in various parts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has not faced any major threat in the past. “Terrorism that targets anyone, especially for their faith, is heinous and must be fought against with the full force of a clear, concerted policy and state power. No compromise, no equivocation,” said Senator Sherry Rehman, a leader from the opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

Can mobile device data help predict Covid-19 outbreaks? A U
Apple now allows unlisted apps on the App Store
S researchers have a c c u r a t e ly p r e dicted outbreaks of Covid-19 using anonymous location information from mobile devices. The novel analysis applied in the study, led by a team at the Yale School of Public Health, could help health officials stem community outbreaks of Covid-19 and allocate testing resources more efficiently, researchers said. In the study published in the journal Science Advances, the researchers were able to identify incidents of high frequency close personal contact (defined as a radius of 6 feet) in Connecticut down to the municipal level. The CDC advises people to keep at least six feet of distance with others to avoid possible transmission of Covid-19. “Close contact between people is the primary route for transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19,” said lead author Forrest Crawford, an associate professor of biostatistics at Yale. “The contact rate we developed in this study can reveal high-contact
conditions likely to spawn local outbreaks and areas where residents are at high transmission risk days or weeks before the resulting cases are detected through testing, traditional case investigations and contact tracing,” Crawford said. The findings are based on a review of Connecticut mobile device geolocation data from February 2020 to January 2021. A novel algorithm computed the probability of close contact events across the state (times when
mobile devices were within six feet of each other) based on geolocation data. “We measured close interpersonal contact within a 6-foot radius everywhere in Connecticut using mobile device geolocation data over the course of an entire year. “This effort gave Connecticut epidemiologists and policymakers insight to people’s social distancing behavior statewide,” Crawford said. Other studies have used so-called “mobility
metrics” as proxy measures for social distancing behaviour and potential Covid-19 transmission. But that analysis can be flawed. Many health officials currently rely on general surveillance data such as the number of confirmed cases, hospitalisations and deaths to track the spread of Covid. But that process can lag actual disease transmission by days and weeks. Analysing close personal contact rates is much faster, the researchers said. (IANS)
pple has introduced the ability to allow developers distribute unlisted apps, that can only be found with a direct link, through the App Store apps. Developers can now publish an app to the App Store that can only be installed via a direct link - the app is unlisted and cannot be found through normal App Store search and discovery means. “Unlisted apps don’t appear in any App Store categories, recommendations, charts, search results, or other listings,” Apple said in a page on its developer website spotted by MacRumors. “They can also be accessed through Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager.” To make an app unlisted and obtain a link, developers will first need to submit a request to Apple. For developers with apps already on the App Store, once the form is completed and approval gained, the app will switch to unlisted at the same URL. Meanwhile, those that use Business Manager or School Manager will need to create a new app record. (IANS)

imin, a singer and dancer with the K-pop group BTS, has tested positive for coronavirus and also underwent surgery for acute appendicitis, his management agency Big Hit Music said on Monday. Jimin, whose full name is Park Jimin, went to hospital on Sunday after suffering from sudden abdominal pain along with a mild sore throat, Big Hit Music said in a statement. He tested positive for the coronavirus, and underwent surgery for the appendicitis on Monday, the statement added. “The surgery was successful and Jimin is currently recuperating after his procedure,” Big Hit Music said, adding that he was making a “speedy recovery” from his COVID-19 infection. The singer was due to receive several days of in-patient treatment for COVID-19 along with postoperative care, the statement said. Jimin, 26, is at least the fourth member of the seven member group to test positive for the coronavirus. Rapper RM, vocalist Jin, and rapper Suga tested positive in December, shortly after the group had returned from a series
of live shows in the United States. The concerts in the United States were BTS’ first in the country since 2019, when they toured across Asia, Europe and North America. Since their 2013 debut, BTS have spearheaded a global K-Pop craze with catchy, upbeat music and dances, as well as lyrics and social campaigns aimed at empowering young people. South Korea has kept overall COVID-19 cases and deaths low with aggressive contact tracing and testing, but the Omicron variant became dominant this month, sending cases to a record daily tally of 17,532 on Sunday. rctic hares can go the distance. A member of Lepus arcticus in northern Canada has traveled farther than anyone knew possible. BBYY, as the adult female was known, made a wild dash of more than 388 kilometers in 49 days — the longest distance ever recorded among hares, rabbits or any other relatives — researchers report online December 22 in Ecology. “To think that such a small animal living under such extreme conditions averaged about eight kilometers per day across seven weeks is truly astounding,” says Joel Berger, an ecologist at Colorado State University in Fort Collins and a senior scientist at K Y M C
the Wildlife Conservation Society in Bronx, N.Y., who was not involved in the study. Arctic hares — which weigh roughly the same as house cats, about four kilograms — are desirable prey for foxes and wolves on the tundra. Given the hares’ important role in the Arctic food web, mammalian ecologist Dominque Berteaux of the Université du Québec à Rimouski wanted to know how the animals move across the arid landscape. In 2019, Berteaux and colleagues affixed satellite tracking collars on 25 hares captured near the northern tip of Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada. no idea the creatures were beginning a mind-blowing expedition across the tundra, Berteaux says. That’s because hares and their relatives, called lagomorphs (SN: 3/8/58), typically spend their lives within a single, familiar territory where food is plentiful and easy to find. The Arctic hares thumped that trend, with most traveling anywhere between 113 and 310 kilometers. None came close to BBYY, who died of unknown causes about a month after reaching her final destination. For a hare to endure such a perilous journey, it must balance the need to find food without becoming food, says Dennis Murray, a terrestrial ecologist at Trent University in Peterborough, Canada, who wasn’t involved in the work. That makes BBYY’s excursion even more impressive, he says. Ber teaux and colleagues hope data from BBYY and the other hares can help inform conservation strategies for the polar desert ecosystem. But even at this early stage, it’s exciting to find “something unsuspected in an animal that we thought we knew quite well,” Berteaux says. (ScienceNews)

India’s Sreejesh bags The World Games Athlete of the Year title NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (PTI): Veteran India hockey goalkeeper PR Srejeesh on Monday won the prestigious World Games Athlete of the Year for his 2021 performances, becoming only the second Indian to receive the accolade. In 2020, Indian women’s hockey captain Rani Rampal became the first Indian to win the honour for her performances in 2019. Adekugbe then scored on the counter in the fifth minute of stoppage time to seal the win for Canada on a cold day in Ontario. “This means everything,” Canada head coach John Herdman said of the victory. “For these boys, for these fans, for this country. We’re turning into a football country.” After the game, Berhalter had a positive take on his team’s effort as they look ahead to hosting Honduras in St. Paul, Minnesota on Wednesday, while Canada travel to El Salvador. “It was a game where, with that performance, you don’t expect to lose that game,” Berhalter said. “So for us we say, put it away, it’s done. Turn the page, now it’s about Honduras.” The top three teams in the group will earn automatic qualification for the World Cup starting in Qatar in late November.

ATP Rankings: Djokovic remains West Indies clinch T20I series against England world No.1, Federer hits 21-year low
BRIDGETOWN (BARBADOS), JAN 31 (IANS): All-rounder Jason Holder’s four wickets in four balls and a superb bowling display by left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein (4/30) helped the West Indies defeat England by 17 runs in the fifth and final T20 International at the Kensington Oval here to clinch the series 3-2 on Monday (IST). Holder joined Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, Ireland’s Curtis Campher and Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga as the only male bowlers to achieve the feat of four-in-four at T20I level, preventing a late England resurgence. Batting first, West Indies notched up a fighting 179/4, thanks mainly to gutsy unbeaten knocks of 41 and 35 from captain Kieron Pollard and Rovman Powell, respectively. Holder (5/27) and Hosein then accounted for nine wickets among themselves as they bundled out the tourists for 162 with a ball remaining. The West Indies innings started positively
tors kept abreast with the required run-rate, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals with Tom Banton (16), Moeen Ali (14) and Liam Livingstone (6) all falling cheaply. James Vince made a gallant 55 off 35 balls before being dismissed by Hosein, who finished with brilliant figures of 4-0-30-4. The England chase seemed to have lost steam after Vince’s wicket. Sam Billings gave them some hope with a quick-fire 41 off 28 balls. But it was the ‘Holder show’ to end the innings as the Windies all-rounder picked four wickets in four balls in the final over to complete a five-wicket haul. He becomes the first West Indian male player to take a T20I hat-trick. Brief Scores: West Indies 179/4 in 20 overs (Brandon King 34, Kieron Pollard 41 not out, Rovman Powell 35 not out) beat England 162 in 19.5 overs (James Vince 55, Sam Billings 41; Akeal Hosein 4/30, Jason Holder 5/27) by 17 runs.

The England spinners continued to control the scoring rate as they finished their spells with two wickets each and with an economy of less than six runs per over. It took a while for the West Indies batters to accelerate but with the fall of Nicholas Pooran’s wicket

NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (IANS): Stylish Indian batter Virat Kohli, who quit Test captaincy earlier this month, said “moving on” is also a part of leadership, to understand that “maybe the environment needs a different direction”. Speaking at a business forum, Kohli highlighted that captaincy also has a fixed ‘tenure and time period’. Kohli led India in South Africa Test series but a day after the visitors were beaten 2-1, Kohli took to social media to announce his decision to give up Test captaincy. “See, I think firstly you need to have a complete understanding of what you set out to achieve and whether you have achieved those targets or not. Everything has a tenure and time period, so you have to be aware of it. As a batter, you might be able to give more to the team, so take pride in that,” he said while speaking on an episode of FireSide Chat. Kohli took over from MS Dhoni as India’s Test captain as early as 2014. He led India to 40 victories in 68 Tests, becoming India’s most successful captain in
MELBOURNE, JAN 31 (IANS): The 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer has hit a 21year low in the latest ATP rankings released on Monday while Serbia’s Novak Djokovic remains world No. 1 despite not playing in the Australian Open. After missing the first Grand Slam of the year, the 40-year-old Federer slipped 13 places and now sits at 30th position with 1,665 points in the latest rankings. the longest format. “You do not need to be a captain to be the leader. When MS Dhoni was in the team, it was not like he was not the leader, he was still the guy from whom we wanted to have input. To win or not win is not in your hands, the striving for excellence and to be better every day, is not something you can do short term. When it comes to a culture, it will last beyond your playing years and your responsibility. “To add to that, moving on is also a part of leadership, to understand
the right time to do that. To understand that maybe the environment needs a different direction but obviously with the same cultural value. You continue to contribute to the team in the same manner butin a different role. “I think one has to embrace all kinds of roles and opportunities. I have played under MS Dhoni for a while and then I became the captain, my mindset has been the same all this while. I always thought like a captain when I was just a player in the team. I want to make the team win. I want to be my own leader,” he added. Kohli had quit T20I captaincy after the T20 World Cup in October last year but said at that time that he wanted to carry on as ODI and Test captain. However, he was later removed as the captain in the 50-over format of the game following India’s early exit in the T20 World Cup. He then played under KL Rahul’s captaincy in the ODI series in South Africa. He will play under Rohit Sharma in the upcoming ODI and T20I series against the West Indies in February.
NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (PTI): The league stage of the Ranji Trophy is set to be held from February 16 to March 5, as per a revised scheduled prepared by the BCCI. The BCCI was forced to postpone the premier domestic tournament due to rising COVID cases in the country. It was originally scheduled to start from January 13. The likely venues for the 38-team event are Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Trivandr um, Cuttack, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Rajkot. The format has been tweaked and there will be eight groups of four teams each with the plate group comprising six teams. No red ball cricket has taken place in India since the Ranji Trophy final in March 2020. Domestic cricketers, who were compensated for cancellation of Ranji Trophy last season, had expressed elation when BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced last week that the red ball event will be held in two phases. The knockouts will be held in June.
Eriksen joins Brentford 7 months Manchester City set to sign Ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard after Euro 2020 cardiac arrest Julian Alvarez from River Plate appointed Everton manager LO N D O N, JA N 3 1 (IANS): Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen will return to football just seven months after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, joining Premier League side Brentford on a six-month deal. Eriksen needed lifesaving treatment on the pitch during Denmark’s 1-0 defeat to Finland at Euro 2020 and has an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) device fitted. Serie A regulations mean he is not allowed to play in Italy with an ICD, and in December the midfielder rescinded his previous contract with Inter Milan. However, after training in Switzerland and with his former club Ajax, the Dane has completed the relevant medical checks and has been passed fit to play again elsewhere, Xinhua reports. “I’m happy to announce that I’ve signed for Brentford Football Club. I can’t wait to get started and hopefully I’ll see you all very soon,” he said in a brief video posted on the Brentford website.
Christian Eriksen
The move will see him work once again with Brentford coach Thomas Frank, who coached Eriksen with the Danish under-17 side 13 years ago. “I am looking forward to working with Christian again. It has been a while since I last coached him, and a lot has happened since then.” “Christian was 16 at the time and has become
one of the best midfield players to appear in the Premier League. He has also won trophies all over Europe and become the star of the Danish national team.” “We have taken an unbelievable opportunity to bring a world-class player to Brentford. He hasn’t trained with a team for seven months but has done a lot of work on his own,” explained Frank.
MANCHESTER, JAN 31 (AGENCIES): Manchester City are set to sign Argentina forward Julian Alvarez from River Plate. River president Jorge Brito said the Premier League champions have met a release clause in Alvarez’s contract. The 22-year-old, who is considered one of the most-gifted young players in South America, will remain at the Argentine champions on loan until July. Alvarez has scored 36 goals in 96 appearances for River and won six international caps. The forward made his international bow against Chile last summer and was part of the Argentina squad that won the Copa America in July. “If you look at everything Julian has done, it was always likely his release clause would be met,” Brito told Argentine network Fox Sports Premium. “The hardest thing was to agree a loan move, because Julian is practically irreplaceable in the
Julian Alvarez
squad.” Reports in Argentina suggest the deal for Alvarez is worth $26m (£19m) which would make him the most expensive player to leave the Buenos Aires club since Javier Saviola moved to Barcelona in 2001. River coach Marcelo Gallardo added: “It’s a good deal as he gets to stay with us for a little longer and joins a big club, one of the top sides in the world with huge economic power. “At the moment, City don’t need him and we don’t have to look for a player of his quality, which would be very difficult.”
L O N D O N, J A N 3 1 (IANS): Days after former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney revealed that he had turned down an offer to discuss the vacant Everton manager’s job, the Premier League strugglers confirmed on Monday that former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard would be a longterm replacement for Rafael Benitez as head coach. Lampard has been appointed manager on a twoand-a-half-year contract, according to skysports. com. The news means a return to coaching for Lampard, who was sacked by Chelsea just over a year ago. The 43-year-old, who also coached Derby County after ending his illustrious playing career, has the task of steering the Liverpoolbased outfit clear of danger, after a disastrous first half of the season under Benitez has left them with just 19 points from their first 20 games -- four more than Newcastle United, who occupy the last relegation

position with 15 points. The club has also agreed a deal with Manchester United to sign Dutch midfielder Donny van der Beek, who has been a virtual outcast since his move to Old Trafford from Ajax in the summer of 2020, playing less than 600 minutes of Premier League
football in that time. The agreement will see Everton pay all of the Dutchman’s wages, but there is no option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign when Manchester United will appoint a new coach to replace interim boss Ralf Rangnick.
