Dynasty politics is threat to democracy, says Modi
NEW DELHI, FEB 9 (AGENCIES): Barely 24 hours before polling in the first phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an interview with news agency ANI on Wednesday attacked dynasty politics and explained how it is different from having secondgeneration leaders in a political party. Dubbing dynastic politics to be a “big threat and the biggest enemy of democracy” as it affects the talent coming into a political party, Modi said there is a difference between one or two people from a family getting tickets and winning elections and all the important political positions in a party going to a particular family in the party. He explained: “When a party is run for generations by a family, there is an only dynasty, no dynamics. In Jammu and Kashmir, there are two parties run by

two separate families; you can see a similar trend in Haryana, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Dynastic politics is the biggest enemy of democracy.” He said: “The biggest casualty in parties that save one family is talent. The democratisation of political parties is important. Dynastic politics deters youth from entering politics.” Taking a jibe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Modi asked, “How do I reply to a person who does not listen, skips Parliament?” Slamming Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his attack on the Central
government for not issuing a clarification on issues like the India-China border dispute and rising unemployment in Parliament, Modi said that detailed answers were given by respective ministries and he had also spoken on some subjects whenever and wherever it was necessary. Modi also defended the farm laws, saying that the three farm laws were implemented for the benefit of farmers and were repealed in the national interest. “I have said this earlier also that farm laws were brought in for the benefit of farmers, but have now been withdrawn in the interest of the nation. I don’t think this needs to be explained anymore. Future events will make it clear why these steps were necessary,” Modi said. Modi added that his government always worked for the benefit of the farmers and they always supported him.

Modi, meanwhile, refused to comment on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur highway security breach in January saying that his remarks might impact the investigation initiated by the Supreme Court into the matter. “I have maintained silence on the issue. The Supreme Court is looking into the matter seriously. Any statement that I make in this regard will impact the investigation, and it is not right,” he said. Speaking on the Lakhimpur Kheri incident that claimed eight lives, including those of four farmers, who were allegedly mowed down by an SUV of Union Minister of State Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra, Modi said the state government is working transparently in the matter as it has given its consent for the committee and the judge that the Supreme Court wanted to rope in for investigation.

Possibility of new Covid variants really high: WHO ED attaches FDs of AR officer in GENEVA, FEB 9 (PTI): Describing the new COVID-19 variants as the “wild card”, a top World Health Organisation official has warned that the Omicron will not be the last one and the possibility of other new variants is really high. During a question and answer session live streamed on WHO’s social media platforms on Tuesday, WHO COVID-19 Technical Lead Maria Van Kerkhove said that the global health agency is tracking four different versions of Omicron. "We know a lot about this virus, but we don't know everything. And quite frankly, the variants are the wild card.
So we are tracking this virus in real time as it mutates as it changes…But this virus has a lot of room to move," she said. “Omicron is the latest variant of concern. It will not be the last variant of concern that WHO will speak about. The next one, you know, that will come hopefully, it will take some time to get there. But with the level of intensity of spread, the possibility that we will have other variants is really high,” she said. “So we need to ensure that we again, not only increase vaccination coverage, but we also take measures to reduce the spread,” she
added. Since the designation of B.1.1.529 as a variant of concern on November 26, 2021, several lineages have been identified. These include Pango lineages BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.2 and BA.3, which are all being monitored by WHO under the umbrella of ‘Omicron'. “BA.2 is more transmissible than BA.1 so we expect to see BA.2 increasing in detection around the world,” Van Kerkhove said. According to WHO’s weekly epidemiological report, released on Tuesday, the Omicron variant is increasingly dominant - making up nearly 97 per cent of all cases.

Cong to suspend all 5 MLAs for supporting NPP-BJP govt in M’laya Correspondent
SHILLONG, FEB 9: The Congress party has decided to suspend all its five Congress legislators for offering support to the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, in which the BJP is one of the constituents in the coalition. “The AICC has decided to suspend all the five party legislators for extending support to the NPP government , in which the BJP is part of it, without consulting the party high command,” State Congress
president, Vincent H. Pala said. He, however refused to comment further on political development in the State. Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader, Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh was defiant when she said the AICC cannot dictate terms on the five legislators. “It will be against the interest of the party if it takes action against us,” Ampareen said. She also voiced surprise that the party leadership did not question the five legislators when they had met Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on January
22 and offered to provide issue-based support to the MDA government. “We are surprised and the million dollar question is why no communication letter was given to the CLP not to go ahead if there was any difficulty or objection to our plan?,” she asked. Apart from Ampareen Lyngdoh, the others who signed the letter included PT Sawkmie, Mayralbron Syiem, Kimfa S Marbaniang and Mohendro Rapsang. This is not the first time that Congress and the BJP have come together, directly
or indirectly, in the North Eastern states. In 2015, all the eight Congress legislators in Nagaland had supported the Naga People’s Front-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland government in the State. The All India Congress Committee suspended these legislators forcing them later to merge with NPF party. In 2018, the Congress and the BJP stitched an alliance to rule the Chakma Autonomous District Council in Mizoram. However, the alliance did not last long.

give one “last push” for solution to the Naga imbroglio before next Christmas 2022. To a query, he admitted that as UDA was an all-party government, the chief minister had agreed in principle to campaign for NPF candidates in Manipur Assembly elections. He said Rio would kick off the campaign at Senapati on February 16. He expressed confidence that NPF would win in all the 10 constituencies in Manipur. It may be pointed out that BJP is leading the alliance in Manipur where NPF is a constituent. In Nagaland after UDA was formed the NPF is also in an alliance with NDPP where BJP is also a major partner. If Rio campaigns in Manipur for the NPF, it could also mean taking a position against BJP which is contesting all 60 seats in Manipur. On merger, Zeliang clarified that NDPP was yet to decide on it as of now.
united to pursue Naga cause
DIMAPUR, FEB 9 (NPN): NNC/FGN has decided to stand united against all odds and pursue the Naga cause with one voice. This was unanimously resolved at a high-level meeting of the organisation under the leadership of FGN kedahge S Singnya and NNC president Senka Ao held here on Tuesday. Asserting that unity was strength and the need of the hour for the Nagas, the (Cont’d on p-8) meeting was of the view that
divisions and divisive forces had no place in the pursuit of Naga aspirations as they only served to weaken and fragment the clarion call of the nation. Noting that the Naga dream had to be pursued united and more vigorously, it was felt that only unity could lead to building of a strong nation. Territorial divisions were insignificant and should not hinder “our” goal, the meeting stressed. (Cont’d on p-8)
Union minister for law and justice, Kiren Rijiju is scheduled to arrive Nagaland on a one-day visit on February 12. According to sources, Kiren Rijiju will be meeting chief minister Neiphiu Rio and his cabinet colleagues, during which they will discuss about the union budget 2022-23 besides other issues. The union minister will also be meeting Nagaland State BJP unit leaders and head to Manipur the same day, where he is likely to campaign for the party for the upcoming assembly elections.
