Rio campaigns for NPF in Manipur been appealing to the Centre to withdraw the draconian law and that Nagaland Legislative Assembly too had passed a resolution calling for its repeal. Rio recalled a meeting with Union home minister Amit Shah who had promised to repeal the Act after a committee was set up. He said Nagaland wanted to break free from AFSPA, but added that if insurgency activities continued and the State government was unable to contain it, the Act could be re-imposed. He said the participation of Naga people from 10 constituencies in Manipur Legislative Assembly had become vital and appealed to people to vote NPF candidates and give them a thumping majority, keeping in mind the Naga political issue. He recalled that launching NPF in Manipur several years ago, was not easy. He said there was
huge resistance from then chief minister Ibobi Singh and that even then Congress Union home minister P Chidambaram had warned him (Rio) against it. Rio said things had improved tremendously after BJP government under Biren Singh came to power and also improvement in overall law and order situation in Manipur. He said both Nagaland and Manipur as neighbours could work side by side in the process of nation building. Zeliang calls for unity for Naga solution: Addressing the rally, UDA chairman and NPF Legislature Party leader TR Zeliang said the Indo-Naga peace talks were at a crucial juncture and on the verge of a final breakthrough, while noting that the patience of Nagas was running out amidst new social and political occurrences taking shape.

On Oting-Mon incidents on December 4 and 5, 2021, the chief minister mentioned that be-cause of the imposition of Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA), 14 innocent civilians were killed and which had led to hue and cry for repeal of AFSPA. Through the International Solar Alliance, our aim is One Sun, One World, One Grid. We must work towards ensuring availability of clean energy from a worldwide grid everywhere at all times. This is the 'whole of the world' approach that India's values stand for,” the prime minister said. Noting that India was a mega-diverse country, he
said, “With 2.4 per cent of the world's land area, India accounts for nearly 8 per cent of the world's species. It is our duty to protect this ecology. We are strengthening our protected area network.” WSDS 2022 is a threeday summit organised by TERI with participation from over 100 nations. It will conclude on February 18. Cement price shoots up due to multiple taxes Staff Reporter D IMAPUR, FEB 16 (NPN): Prices of many essential items appear to be spiralling upwards even as there appears to be no mechanism to effectively check them. For instance, the price of a 50-kg bag of cement in Dimapur, has been on an upward trend during the past few weeks. As against Rs.480 to Rs.490 per bag during the past
month, the rate has now crossed the Rs.500-mark and presently settled at Rs. 510 per 50kg bag in the district. It may be mentioned that various organisations including the Dimapur District Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI) has decried the unchecked illegal taxations levied on the business community. A cement wholesaler, speaking on condition of
anonymity told Nagaland Post that rate of a 50 kg bag of cement was revised recently at Rs. 491 per bag by the distributor/agency. According to the dealer, a particular and popular brand of cement was sold to customers ranging from Rs. 500 to Rs. 510. He said in the month of January this year, the price of a bag of cement was Rs. 470, but it increased to Rs. 490 in
February, and further increased to Rs. 510 starting February 13, 2022. H o w e v e r, w h e n asked why a 50 kg bag of cement being sold for Rs.500 and above, another dealer said it was due to illegal taxes. He said the distributor/agency had to pay taxes multiple times to various organisations and the extra charge had to be passed on to the buyers. (Cont’d on p-6)

DIMAPUR, FEB 16 (NPN): Apprising about the “anxiety” of the people of Nagaland in particular and the Nagas in general for the “much-expected solution” to the Naga political issue, the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) has urged the Prime Minister of India to intervene and resolve the long pending political solution “as has been promised.” In a representation addressed to the Prime Minister of India, the NTC president Toniho Yepthomi and general secretary Nribemo Ngullie reminded him of the promise he made to the Nagas for early solution of the Naga political issue. NTC stated that negotiations between the Naga political groups (NPGs) and the government of India for a political solution “have officially been culminated” on October 31, 2019. The council stated that the “only task left” at the moment was for the government of India to take a call for signing the agreement between the Naga negotiators and the government of (Cont’d on p-6) India.
ACAUT demands strong anticriminal law to curb taxation
DIMAPUR, FEB 16 (NPN): ACAUT Nagaland has demanded that the State government should mull introducing a stringent anticriminal law, with or without the removal of AFSPA vis-à-vis the Oting massacre, to curb the menace of multiple taxation. In a press release, ACAUT convener Tia Longchar, co-convenor Simon Kelio and secretary Hetoi Chishi said 25 years of ceasefire had resulted in a dozen of legitimate NPGs, which were likely to increase further. T h e y a l l e ge d t h a t ground rules under the ceasefire were defective and had scuttled the purpose due to inherent loopholes. They mentioned that for too long these lacunae had been exploited and had allowed forced collections and multiple taxation, making the
majority of the citizens suffer unbearably. Hence, demanding that the chairman of Ceasefire Monitoring Board should rectify these flaws before any future ceasefire extensions, they also insisted that cadres of various Naga political groups (NPGs) should be kept under strict surveillance along with stringent restrictions on movement by arm cards holders, while all designated camps should be adequately provided for. Recalling Naga people of NPF’s promise of Naga solution “within 3 months” in 2003 and BJP’s declaration of “election for solution”, ACAUT said the formation of second opposition-less government for Naga solution would face litmus test in next year’s general election. (Cont’d on p-6)
TUD lauds Dimapur police Tenyimi Union Dimapur (TUD) has lauded the “active Dimapur police personnel” in arresting Joshi, for running a syndicate. In a press note, TUD president Vekhosayi Nyekha further urged the district administration and the police to leave no stone unturned and to nab all the others involved, and uproot such evil practise
from the bottom, once and for all. TUD said it also took serious note of the current scenario where extortion by the so-called nationalists were rampant, making the innocent public suffer. The union appealed to all right thinking citizens and social welfare bodies to rise to the occasion to save the dying society.

TEA giving hope to children with spl needs Correspondent
KOHIMA, FEB 16 (NPN): Tabitha Enabling Academy (TEA), a special school, here is giving hopes to differently-abled kids by making admissions free. The academy started in 2012 with three staff members and seven students at the basement of Chakhesang Baptist Church, Kitsubozou. In 2014, the academy shifted to a building of its board member Kudechu Khamo, who has allowed it to function free of cost till today. P r ov i d i n g s p e e c h , music and physiotherapy, TEA now has 27 students and 10 staff members, including vocational therapist and two drivers. During COVID-19 pandemic, teachers of the academy provided homebased tuitions to around 35 students, making them learn academics as well as training them with tailoring, besides helping them sell the products that they had

made. They also taught these children with daily routine activities. Speaking to Nagaland Post, TEA co-proprietor and administrator Asano Seb said teaching normal children might not be a problem, but acknowledged that teaching differentlyabled kids was a different ball game. She mentioned that a teacher had to assume the additional responsibility of being a parent to these children. Often, the teacher had to lift such children and take them to classrooms, as well as give them food and
ensure that they clean their hands, she added. Asano stressed that parents should not feel ashamed of having differently-abled kids, but rather be proud of them as such kids had special qualities and skills. “ We j u s t n e e d t o recognise their skills and help them explore. The reason behind opening the school was to ensure that these children with disabilities would one be able to lead a life independently,” Veketilu Vese. The academy receives contributions in the form of tithes from families,
churches and well-wishers, besides the support from Assam rifles and Social Welfare Department. And when it faces financial hardships, TEA seeks aid and even organise jumble sale. The idea of opening such school came in when Asano and Veketilu during their college days noticed a lecturer, who had a differently-abled child. Of course, this child received proper care and education. This motivated them and gave them hope to help children with special needs across the State.

India’s politics
ndia is a land of multiple faiths and religions leading often to violence and hatred among the people. Those who fan this religious violence do not consider religion as a moral order but use it as a means and weapon to pursue their political ambitions. Communalism essentially leads to violence as it is based on mutual religious hatred. This phenomenon leads to distinction between a communal organisation and a religious organisation. Polling in five states where elections are held, have already started since February 10 with UP in seven phases. Of all states, the election campaign in Uttar Pradesh, the biggest state where 1209 candidates belonging to all political parties will contest 403 seats. A party or alliance winning 202 seats will form the government. The BJP-led alliance is contesting all 403 seats and Samajwadi Party- led alliance is also contesting 403. The most interesting aspect is that the Congress despite having hardly any presence in UP is contesting 403 seats on its own. UP is India’s largest State and also with 20.42 crore population is also the most populated state in India. The election in UP attracts the most attention solely because the fight there is considered not only crucial for 2024 but also because prime minister Narendra Modi and union home minister Amit Shah have made it a prestige battle leaving nothing to chance. Electoral sops worth over Rs.50,000 crore has been announced before the Election Commission of India(ECI) announced the poll schedules. The next important state is Punjab where the Congress is in a desperate bid to retain power as against pre-November 2021 when the party was certain of overcoming anti-incumbency. In Punjab the Congress is contesting all 117 seats but continuing to fight an internal war that has been billed as the ‘War of the Sardars’. The first Sardar wars started between then chief minister Capt.Amarinder Singh and Navjyot Singh Sidhu the cricketer-turned- BJP- turned- Congress leader. Sidhu manage to eventually push out Capt.Amarinder courtesy the Gandhi siblings and Charanjit Singh Channi was made chief minister while the trouble maker Sidhu got what he wanted-Punjab PCC post. However even before Channi could settle down, SIdhu restarted the second Sardar War when he went blazing all guns at the chief minister for failure to act on the sacrilege case. Sidhu then compelled Rahul Gandhi to name the chief ministerial candidate of the party in Punjab and which was done through SMS. However instead, Channi was the winner but Sidhu is not ready to sit idly by. The Sardar Wars has only placed the AAP in a very advantageous position to come to power. In Goa, the ruling BJP is on a shaky ground but the Congress is not capable to win majority of the 40 seats. In Uttarakhand the Congress is hoping to win majority of 70 seats to retake the state but that is not going to be easy. In Manipur, the BJP expects to retain power on it own and is contesting all 60 seats. All in all, the BJP which is ruling in four states-UP, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur- could speculatively win either two or three of the four and this would mean that the win could be either 3-2 in its favour or 2-3 against it. All these will be known on March 10 when votes will be counted.
DailyDevotion The Inspiration of Spiritual Initiative Arise from the dead… —Ephesians 5:14 Not all initiative, the willingness to take the first step, is inspired by God. Someone may say to you, “Get up and get going! Take your reluctance by the throat and throw it overboard— just do what needs to be done!” That is what we mean by ordinary human initiative. But when the Spirit of God comes to us and says, in effect, “Get up and get going,” suddenly we find that the initiative is inspired. We all have many dreams and aspirations when we are young, but sooner or later we realize we have no power to accomplish them. We cannot do the things we long to do, so our tendency is to think of our dreams and aspirations as dead. But God comes and says to us, “Arise from the dead….” When God sends His inspiration, it comes to us with such miraculous power that we are able to “arise from the dead” and do the impossible. The remarkable thing about spiritual initiative is that the life and power comes after we “get up and get going.” God does not give us overcoming life— He gives us life as we overcome. When the inspiration of God comes, and He says, “Arise from the dead…,” we have to get ourselves up; God will not lift us up. Our Lord said to the man with the withered hand, “Stretch out your hand” (Matthew 12:13). As soon as the man did so, his hand was healed. But he had to take the initiative. If we will take the initiative to overcome, we will find that we have the inspiration of God, because He immediately gives us the power of life.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2022
Post-mortem
What has gone wrong with the secular India?
T
he frequent and systematic targeting of religious minorities continues to plague India. Why is this happening? India is a big nation. It is not only known to the world for her size but also some other outstanding features such as the world biggest democracy and the texture of secularism. However, in recent past, life is becoming more difficult for minorities in the country. To point out one example of such is the persecution meted out to the Christians in the country. Unless this is curbed and abated it will become the order of the day. The Index of persecution of Christians in countries worldwide 2021, India stands at 83 out of 100 which is the 4th highest in the world index. This is only the outer surface of the real thing inside. Discrimination, censorship, increased surveillance and threat, they go unreported and unnoticed. Anti-Christian vigilantes are sweeping through villages, storming churches, burning Christian literatures, attacking schools and assaulting worshippers. In many cases, the law enforcing agencies and those in the helm of power remain quiet. This has encouraged the perpetrators to continue with their agenda. In almost all incidents reported across the country, vigilante mobs comprising of religious extremists have seen to either barge into prayer gatherings or round up individuals that they suspect are involved in forcible religious conversions. It has become a common sight in the mainland where communal sloganeering is witnessed outside police stations, where police stand as mute spectators. L a t e ly, t h e g r ow ing intolerance towards Christians has sharply increased. According to Release partners, there
T
has been a significant rise in the number of attacks against Christians since 2014. Why have we become so hateful? Why has it become so difficult to separate politics and religion in our country? Will the generations to come embrace what is happening today or will they hate us for creating and gifting them with the culture of hatred? Our children will soon forget what is “Unity in Diversity”, the fabric that has bind us together and for which we were proud of. What has gone wrong with our country? Why has religion become an issue in a country that advocates secularism? What has personal faith and adherence to certain religion and faith become an issue? India as we know is not a religionless nation. Indians are religious people. People of different faith converge together as one nation, each faith community making significant contribution to make a strong India as it stands today. Nevertheless, peaceful atmosphere and peaceful coexistence of the past is fast deteriorating with one major religion suppressing the other religions with the intention to make it disappear. But this approach will only create an unrest situation in the country. Religion, be it indigenous or faith coming into the soil should be left to personal choice. One cannot force the other to follow the religious practice of others if one is not convinced. So , the cliche “force conversion” is just a farce-it is mere jealousy and a ploy to suppress freedom of religious expression. Religion that advocates violence and persecution is nothing but against humanity. In October 2021, t h e r e we r e 3 0 0 i n c i dents meted out against Christians. This has been documented by International Christian Concern
(10/22/2021). This numbers record only the obvious and the enlarged cases which made to the news. The numbers can be staggering if all the unreported incidents are documented. It speaks volume of the suffering of the Christian community. It points to the unfortunate state of affair in a country which takes pride in her achievements and contributions to the global community on the roof top as the world biggest democratic and secular country. But internally, things are not put in order which are silently tolerated and borne by the minorities. The anti conversion bill is used to suppress and persecute Christians. It is a targeted bill. It has become a mere tool of excuse to make people of other religion to practice their faith. It has become a weapon for those those who seek to destroy the fabric of secularism. The bill only empowers and emboldens those who vent out hate. It is used as a shield for protection. The bill says, “No person shall convert or attempt to convert, either directly or otherwise any person from indigenous faith by use of force or by inducement or any fraudulent means nor shall any person abet any such conversion.” The bill has entered into wrong hands. The perpetrators and the authority are hiding behind the bill without proper interpretation. Religion must be placed within the domain of the individuals and not at the dictate of the government. The bill has not done anything good for the country. It only empowers the majority and protects them to continue to abuse and harass the minorities. It is indeed sad that the good deeds done by Christians and other minority religions are labelled as force conversion and creating disunity. If one is free to propagate the religion of his/her choice,
one should also be allowed to practice the ideals of their faith in action. The anti minority movement has become more forceful and fueled and her agents are backed by people in power. Trying to mix politics and religion have caused the country leadership to major on minors and miss on the major issues that are confronting the nation. The major is peaceful coexistence. The major is the economy, to produce productivity and comfortable life. The major is the insecurity faced by the poor, the weak and working class. If then, where has the politics of division crept in? A country will not go far unless all are taken on board. To s p e a k f o r t h e Christians, the message of Christianity is love and peace. In our service to humanity, in our peaceful worship and in our advocacy for love and peace we are treated otherwise, as though we are the troublemakers. In us, the secular emblem of the country is marred with the cry of the persecuted and the blood of the martyrs. Their sufferings are less heard but their cries are becoming louder by the day. The United Christian Forum, a human rights group has stated that “Violence and incidents instigated by such mobs in the state includes (1) physical and verbal assaults on religious leaders and members; (2) damage to and desecration of places of worship, including arson; (3) disruption of prayer services and restrictions on religious gatherings; (4) false accusations of forced and fraudulent religious conversions; (5) forced or coerced gather wapsi ceremonies; (6) refusals of permission for religious minorities to establish and run places of worship. It is deplorable that mob violence continues unchecked and unabated (UCF Report). These are
just skeleton information, there are many which go unreported. This projects the untold miseries the Christians in the country are going through. The religious minorities are part of you as much as you are part of us. But today we live in fear. Don’t we have the right to propagate our faith and practices without fear as much as you do? What has caused one group to work hard to suppress the fundamental religious rights of the minorities? If the Christians have ever worked to disintegrate the nation or spread the message of hatred tell us without demolishing the sacred places for worship and closing down our institutions. Let us work together to bury the propaganda of hatred. Why is the authority always silent when minorities are attacked and suffer? When religion advocate hate and destruction, persecution and annihilation can the country ever co-exist together as a peace loving nation built on mutual love and trust? If a Christian is forced to renounce his or her faith isn’t that force conversion? Where do we draw the line? The people who persecute people of other faith are forcing people to pronounce the name of their god. What then, do we call that? I know many sensitive people from other religious traditions feel sad and are hurt when their own brothers and sisters of other faith suffer. But, as long as the authority remain silent and do not act upon it, things are not going to change. W h e n c h u r c h e s, schools and sacred places are vandalized and forced to close down and their worship and sacred gatherings are disturbed and locked, where is freedom of religion? The government should come out clean on this matter! Where do you expect us to run for help and pro-
tection? How long will the minorities in the country continue to tolerate and suffer? We are cornered from all directions. Think of the ploy to take away their holy days which are intentionally ordered to disturb and disrupt. Why do the government of the day always try to fix functions and events such as public exams and elections on a Christian Sundays where the day is meant for worship for the Christians? At least let us learn to be sensitive and respect each other religious practice. India is an ancient nation and politics is nothing new but of late, mixing politics with religious fanaticism is a new phenomenon which is catching up. It has not yielded good fruits but bad taste. For a nation to move forward, socio-regio-cultural harmony is indispensable. Peaceful-harmonious co-existence is built on respect and not on domination. Leave religion out of politics and let us work together for a country free from discrimination, suppression and persecution. Together in our differences, be it race, caste, culture or religion, we can build a strong nation free from fear. Should we all be reminded of this? • Equal respect and recognition for all religions by the state. • No discrimination by the state on the basis of religion. • Non-interference in the functioning of any religion by the state. • No official religion in India. • An individual has the right to practice, propagate and profess any religion. “Freedom to all religions and tolerance to all religion.” May this be true of the great nation India! No route map to net zero as business eclipses environment
he present government at the centre is in no hurry to meet its grandly proclaimed targets. We have it on the authority of the Prime Minister himself that Acche Din have been deferred by 25 years. This year’s union budget is a “ hundred years” budget, presumably because it makes little sense for 2022. Minister Piush Goel, at a post budget press conference on the 2nd of this month, announced that this budget “ lays the foundation for the future.” The BJP has been in power for eight years now and if it is still at the foundation stage this does not engender much hope. Which is why Mr. Modi’s Delphic proclamation at Glasgow in December 2021 that India will reach Net Zero emissions by 2070- two full generations from now- is not surprising. It is par for the course. It is based on the premise that since in the long run we are all dead, it does not matter what you promise, provided it is far enough in the future. Given the disastrous environmental policies being pursued by this government there is no way we can achieve Net Zero in this century. Mr. Modi seems to think that it is enough to promote solar power to a level of 350 GW by 2030. While this is
necessary, it is not enough by itself without paying attention to other, equally crucial dimensions. Attaining Net Zero involves two broad and parallel strategies- reduction of emissions and sequestering/ capturing the emissions that do take place. T h i s g ove r n m e n t seems to be working only half-heartedly on the first and, worse, completely ignoring the second. India produced 2.41 billion tonnes of CO2 in 2020 (7% of global emissions) and the target is to reduce this by 1 billion tonnes by 2050 and capture the rest, thus achieving Net Zero status. It does not appear that we will be able to meet either target if the present policies continue. To achieve the reduction of 1 billion tonnes it is absolutely imperative that fossil fuels are largely replaced with renewable energy. We will be doing that in percentage terms- tthe use of coal as part of our energy mix will fall from the present 70-75% to about 40-45%. But the bad news is that in absolute terms the consumption of coal shall GO UP hugely. In an interview to Rajya Sabha TV on December 17 2021 the Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Coal, Mr. Vinod Tewari, disclosed that
coal consumption is projected to almost double by 2030- from the current 930 million tonnes to about 1700 million tonnes. Both domestic production and perhaps imports will go up correspondingly. To supply this demand the government will continue to aggressively explore for new coal blocks. And even after 2030 demand for coal shall keep going up; according to Tewari the peaking is expected by 2040-45 only. This does not inspire much hope of meeting the target of 1 billion m.t reduction of emissions by 2050. But there exists an even greater worry, even if we achieve the 1 billion tonne reduction target : how do we capture the 1.50 billion tonne plus emissions being pumped into the atmosphere every year ? I have not yet seen any signs of a CCS ( Carbon Capture and Sequestration) policy, which is expected to cost about US$400 billion ( 2.4% of India’s GDP) by 2050. The only mechanism we have to do the job, therefore, is the natural, godgiven one- our natural forests and ecosystems. One hectare of moderately dense forest acts as a carbon sink for 147 tonnes of CO2 , and can continue to do so for a hundred years- if it is not
deforested. And that is the crux of the problem- we are ravaging and destroying our forests on an unprecedented scale and destroying forever their carbon sequestration capacity, which is so vital for meeting our Net Zero targets. The ISFR (Indian State of the Forest Reports) will never tell you the truth and continue to conceal the actual facts behind a thicket of dubious methodology, self-serving interpretations and internationally rejected values. It continues to claim, year on year, that the country’s forest cover is increasing whereas this is not supported by its own figures. Between 2015 and 2021 very dense forests in an area of 31367 sq. kms (3.136 million hectares) degraded into scrub and barren land- a carbon sink capacity loss of 450 million tonnes of CO2. There’s more: 9.40 million mature trees have been felled between 201620 for various projectsthat amounts to a loss of an additional 141 million tonnes CO2of sequestration capacity. I could give more figures but they are not necessary to establish that at this rate of destruction of nature, Net Zero even by 2100 is an impossibility. Instead of increasing our sequestration capacity we are hell bent on reduc-
ing it! Mr. Modi and his government of myopic tradesmen attach no importance to the natural environment and view it only as a resource to be ruthlessly exploited to favour their cronies. The regulatory framework painstakingly constructed over the years in consultation with civil society and environmentalists is being dismantled Act by Act, rule by rule. Rivers are being damned or diverted, Protected Areas are being denotified, highways being built through tiger reserves, centuries old pristine forests being hacked down for mining coal and diamonds, the Himalayas are being gang raped by “developers” and its precious glaciers threatened, the Western Ghats are being denied the protection that at least two expert committees have pleaded for. All relevant legislationForest Conservation Act, Wildlife Protection Act, Environment Protection Act, Coastal Zone Regulations, to name a few- have been amended to facilitate this pillaging and carpet bombing of nature. The very concept of forestry has been changedfrom “ protection” to “ management” and states are being encouraged“coerced” is perhaps a more accurate term- to accord environmental and
forest clearances without proper scrutiny. In pursuit of this unholy haste, as many as 11500 forest approvals have been given between 2014 and 2019, the rate of approval is an unbelievable 99% ! The courts are mute spectators to this carnage. The protests of villagers, tribal communities and indigenous populations and experts are contemptuously ignored. The effects of global warming, climate change and anthropogenic disasters are staring us in the face, but for this government “ease of doing business” is the only mantra. The current policies are failing to address the two main milestones on the Net Zero pathway- absolute reduction in fossil fuel consumption, and sequestration of emissions. We still do not have a national Energy policy, there is no discernible route map to Net Zero status, there is no mention of CCS plans, reports about the status and health of our forests continue to be fudged- all we have to go on is an assurance that all will be well in the new Amrit Kaal. And while we trudge towards this new mirage, time is running out- fast. Avay Shukla is retired from the Indian Administrative Service. (As published in The Citizen)

A flag hoisting ceremony of NPP candidate in Thoubal district on Wednesday.
IMPHAL, FEB 16: There is no difference between the BJP and the Congress, said Manipur deputy chief minister Y Joykumar and national vice president of National People’s Party (NPP) while criticizing its partner BJP in the coalition government in the state on Wednesday. Addressing a party election rally at Heirok in Thoubal district, the NPP leader alleged that chief
minister N Biren Singh of BJP had done nothing for the development of the state and welfare of its people in the last five years and was busy in finding ways to weaken the NPP. Despite being a partner, the chief minister always attempted to oust the NPP from the coalition government forgetting the major role it (NPP) had taken to form the BJP-led government in the state after 2017 elections. All these five years, the

SHILLONG, FEB 16: The Meghalaya gover nment would soon take a call on the appointment of a fullfledged Director-General of Police after the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had recommended the names of three senior IPS officers for the post. The names are: Mukesh Agrawal, K.V.Singh Deo (both 1989 batch IPS officer) and L. Ram Bishnoi (1991 batch). The three officers are serving with the Assam government as the officers are from the Assam-Meghalaya IPS cadre. Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday said the process is already on for taking a final decision to choose the best of the three IPS officers to be appointed as the new DG of Meghalaya police. “We will choose the best from among the three names recommended by the UPSC. The decision of the government will be made
known at an appropriate time,” he said. Rymbui said the state government will take into consideration the prevailing situation and the unique nature of the state of Meghalaya while deciding on the appointment of the new DGP. Asked if Assam’s Special Director General of Police, L.R. Bishnoi is the front-runner for the top post in the State police department, the Home Minister said, “That is a mere speculation because we from the state government have not taken any decision yet. The appointment of the new DGP will take some time.” The Meghalaya government had forwarded the names of five IPS officers of Assam-Meghalaya cadre for appointment as the next DGP after R Chandranathan retired on December 31, 2021. Apart from Agarwal, Deo and Bishnoi, the other two names are : S. Narayan Singh (1991 batch) and Idashisha Nongrang (1992 batch).
tion gun, two .22 rifles, one .303 rifle, a hand grenade, two .32 pistols, he said. The DNLA was formed in early 2019 with an aim to establish a sovereign nation for the people belonging to the Dimasa tribe. It declared a unilateral ceasefire for three months on September 7 as a ‘goodwill gesture and as a positive response to the call of peace’ by the chief minister. Dimasa people live mainly in Assam and Nagaland. In the last year, 113 DNLA cadres had laid down their arms. Altogether 165 militants belonging to the organisation have come overground so far. Its members were suspected to have been involved in killing five drivers of coal-carrying trucks in Dima Hasao district on August 27 last year after they purportedly failed to pay money demanded by the outfit.

well as creating jobs for youth. Referring to two recent disturbing instances faced by local business community in a short span of time that had been publicised in most local newspapers, they said around 6,000 permitted taxis rendered essential transportation service within and outside Nagaland, providing gainful employment and sustaining many families. They mentioned that All Nagaland Taxi Association (ANTA) had its raised voice against the unabated taxation by multiple NPGs that reached a back-breaking point for its members,
especially because of the pandemic, even as they reiterated the public resolution of “One Government, One Tax”. They also cited the mental harassment faced by two hardworking and courageous mothers running a goods transport agency in the hands of a non-local kingpin named Joshi, who was harboured and protected by some locals with vested interests. Mrs Tokali and Mrs Khesheli had been bringing in the highly-sought-after second-hand bales through their East India Transport Agency without paying to the syndicate and sell-
ing them few thousands cheaper to mostly Naga women working to feed their families. The duo’s defiance of the diktat of the syndicate had ruffled the feathers of higher echelons among the divided NPGs, but who were all united on unabated taxation. They lauded Dimapur Police for doing a commendable job by arresting Joshi as per the FIR lodged. According to the ACAUT leaders, the panacea to all these livelihood threatening and survival issues was bringing about an honourable political settlement at the earliest.

The last rites will be held on Thursday as the family is waiting for his musician-son Bappa Lahiri to return from Los Angeles, US. “The last rites will be held at Pawan Hans crematorium in Juhu,” Lahiri’s son-in-law Govind Bansal told PTI. The musician last worked on “Ganpati Bappa Morya” in September 2021. He gave the music to the devotional song, voiced by the US-based Indian singer Anuradha Juju Palakurthi. ‘Will send Lakhimpur culprit to jail’: Akhilesh
AURAIYA (UP), FEB 16 (PTI): Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday condemned the state government over grant of bail to union minister Ajay Mishra’s son in Lakhimpur case, saying he would ensure that the culprit and his protectors go to prison when he comes to power. “The minister’s son who trampled farmers has got bail from court. The government did not pursue the case as it should have been. “SP assures you all that our government is coming and when it does, the case will be pursued in such a manner that not only the one who took the life of farmers will go to jail but also those patronizing them,” Akhilesh said addressing an election meeting here. Union Minister of State for Hom e Ajay M i s h r a ’s s o n A s h i s h Mishra is an accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident which had left eight people, including four farmers, dead. Mishra was recently granted bail and was re-

leased from Lakhimpur Kheri jail after his arrest in October last year. Faced with continuous attack on the law and order situation during his government, Akhilesh said that those who want to take law in their hands need not vote for his party in the coming elections. He alleged that Yogi Adityanath is the only CM in the country who has withdrawn cases lodged himself. “’Babaji’ is levelling allegations the most but see the work of their government too. Is the IPS not absconding? a trader was not beaten in the name of extortion by the police leaving him dead? “There would not have been a Lakhimpurlike incident in a world where a peaceful ‘dharna’ by farmers was going on
and a Jeep comes and tramples them,” Akhilesh said. Seeking votes from the electorate for making a “new UP”, he said his party if comes to power will fill all vacant posts and will announce some more in police. The SP president, who has already promised implementation of the old pension scheme for the government employees as per their long standing demand, also tried to woo the unemployed youth with a promise to relax the age limit to help them get jobs. “Due to Corona, many people have crossed the age limit for getting jobs. If we have to give age relaxation, then Samajwadis will also work in this direction,” he said. Akhilesh claimed that the voting pattern so far has made the BJP workers gone “numb”. He also reiterated his manifesto promises like free electricity, free ration, restoration of old pension to government employees, and the Samajwadi pension.

EC notice to Telangana BJP MLA for threatening UP voters
T. Raja Singh
NEW DELHI/HYDERABAD, FEB 16 (IANS): The Election Commission on Wednesday issued a show-cause notice to Telangana’s BJP MLA T. Raja Singh for threatening Uttar Pradesh voters of dire consequences if they don’t vote for the saffron party. Taking a note of the controversial video of the MLA circulated widely on social media platforms, it observed that prima facie he violated the Model Code of Conduct, sections 171 C and 171 F of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 and the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The Election Commission asked him to show cause within 24 hours as to why appropriate penal action under criminal law should not be initiated against him and also to why appropriate action for violation of Model Code of
conduct should not be taken against him. “Take notice that in the event of no response from your side within the stipulated time, it will be presumed that you have nothing to say in the matter and the Election Commission will take appropriate action or decision in the matter without making any further reference to you,” reads the notice. T h e c o n t r ove r s i a l MLA, in the video released after the second phase of polling for Assembly election in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, threatened voters that if they don’t cast their votes for BJP their houses will be demolished and they will be driven out of the state. Singh, who represents Goshamahal constituency in Hyderabad, voiced concern over the “huge voter turnout in some areas” of Uttar Pradesh during the second phase of polling on Monday, saying he believes that UP CM Yogi Adityanath’s enemies came out in large numbers to cast their votes. He appealed to “Hindu brothers and sisters” to come out and vote in third and subsequent phases.
Punjab polls: Modi says AAP photocopy of Congress, both pretending to fight
Narendra Modi during an election campaign rally for upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, in Pathankot. (PTI)
PATHANKOT, FEB 16 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called the AAP a photocopy of the Congress, alleging that both parties are pretending to fight against each other in the Punjab Assembly elections. Listing similarities between the two parties, he alleged both of them opposed the Ram temple in Ayodhya and they speak the “language of Pakistan” when Indian soldiers show their valour. Addressing a rally here ahead of the February 20 elections, Modi also said the Congress had committed a “sin” by failing to keep Kartarpur Sahib, the final resting place of
Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, within India’s territory at the time of the Partition. He urged voters to bring the BJP-led alliance to power in Punjab for the all-round development of the state. Taking on the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, Modi said, “Both these parties, despite being ‘ek thali ke chatte batte’ (two sides of the same coin), are now together doing ‘noora kushti’ (pretending to fight) in Punjab. Have you seen WWF? This is what they are doing. They are pretending to be rivals.” “It is a Xerox copy of the Congress. Everything is the same,” he said
referring to the AAP. “See the similarities between these two parties, when the Ram temple was coming up in Ayodhya, both of them opposed it. When India’s bravehearts show their valour, the leaders of these parties speak the language of Pakistan,” he added. Modi said, “The truth is that if the Congress is the original, then the second party (AAP) is its photocopy.” One pushed the youth into the drug trap and the second party is busy getting the youth of Delhi addicted to liquor. One looted Punjab and the second is committing scams one after another in Delhi, he alleged. BJP leaders have accused the AAPled Delhi government of “drowning” the youth in liquor, saying more liquor vends have been opened in the city. The AAP, however, has maintained that liquor vends have only been evenly spread under the new excise policy and their number has not increased. Modi said the Congress has now got a “partner in crime”.

The police also has the job of monitoring the situation here,” he said. Shah said the 75th birthday of the Delhi Police coincides with the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations and stressed that the force should prepare a road map for the next five years. “The Delhi Police has changed with the times. a road map for the next five years and 25 years with welldefined goals,” he said. Paying tribute to the 79 police personnel who lost their lives during the pandemic, he praised the efforts of the force by battling the pandemic by standing in front row. Recalling the Delhi police’s contribution during the pandemic, Shah said, “The police personnel attended people whose families weren’t here, took them
for testing, got them hospitalised and provided oxygen cylinders to those who were in need. They even helped in performing last rites during the difficult times. “The kind of work Delhi Police did will be an inspiration for the police forces across the country and will be a pathway for other state polices to follow. During the period, the force also thwarted several terror attempts,” he added. Shah said the newly created perception management cell would help in improving the image of the city police. Shah took the salute and inspected the parade as the chief guest. The minister also released ‘Delhi Police Commemoration Stamp’ along with Minister of State (Communications) Devusinh J Chauhan and Delhi Police Commissioner
Rakesh Asthana in recognition of 75 years of glorious services rendered by Delhi Police to its citizenry. He stated that the Delhi Police should prepare a roadmap for the next five years with well-defined goals to fill the gaps whatsoever in respect of investigation, prosecution, cyber threats etc., and also for next 25 years when the force celebrates its diamond jubilee with nation’s independence. Lauding the commitment of police personnel and sacrifices of their family members, the chief guest commended that when everybody else is rejoicing, our jawans have to be extra vigilant and have to toil harder than routine days. The minister wished that the Delhi Police becomes the best cosmopolitan force by the time the nation celebrates centenary of independence.
MUMBAI, FEB 16 (IANS): Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray invited his Telangana counterpart K. Chandrashekar Rao for lunch on Sunday with a power menu comprising national affairs and opposition unity, officials said. Earlier on Wednesday, Thackeray called up KCR, as Rao is popularly known, and lauded his efforts to rally the country’s regional and Opposition parties and forge a united challenge to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party at the Centre. Thackeray is understood to have conveyed to KCR the need to “save the country” from BJP’s divisive political agenda for which the Shiv Sena would extend full support.

Hijab row sponsored by BJP in K’taka: SDPI
MANGALURU, FEB 16 (PTI): The social democratic party of India (SDPI) on Wednesday charged the BJP with ‘sponsoring’ and ‘promoting’ the hijab-saffron shawl issue in educational institutions in Karnataka. Addressing reporters here, SDPI state general secretary B R Bhaskar Prasad alleged that the entire issue is a ‘criminal act’ sponsored by the BJP government in the state. Noting that the constitution never barred Muslim women wearing hijab, he alleged that the issue was created by a college principal which was later taken up by the Sangh Parivar outfits. He sought to know why hijab should be banned as a religious symbol when Hindu symbols like thread and ‘nama’ are allowed. He also accused the Congress of adopting ‘double standards’ on the issue. of a pullback of troops following military exercises near Ukraine. But NATO Secretar y-General Jens Stoltenberg threw cold water on those statements, saying the military organisation does not see any sign that Moscow is decreasing its troop levels in and around Ukraine. “At the moment, we have not seen any withdrawal of Russian forces,” he said,
before chairing a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels. “If they really start to withdraw forces, that’s something we will welcome but that remains to be seen.” Countries in the alliance have also expressed doubt, as have leaders in Ukraine. Caught between Russia and the West, Ukrainian leaders have repeatedly sought to project calm but
also strength during the crisis. In a show of resolve, P r e s i d e n t Vo l o d y m y r Zelenskyy declared on Wednesday, tipped by some officials as a possible start for an invasion, a day of national unity. “To mark the day, demonstrators unfolded a 200-meter (656-foot) national flag at a sports arena in Kyiv. Ravi in Pakistan is the most polluted river in the world
Hong Kong’s hospitals overwhelmed by huge surge in Covid-19 cases
LAHORE, FEB 16 (PTI): River Ravi in Pakistan is the most polluted river in the world, followed by water bodies in Bolivia and Ethiopia, a US-based r e s e a r c h a c a d e my h a s said, warning that local populations in these areas are exposed to serious risks. I n i t s s t u d y, t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f Yo r k monitored 1,052 sampling sites along 258 rivers in 104 countries across all continents to quantify the presence of pharmaceutical ingredients - paracetamol, nicotine, caffeine and epilepsy and diabetes drugs - in these ecological environments, the Dawn newspaper reported on Wednesday. The study concluded that contaminants in surface water posed a threat to e nv i r o n m e n t a l a n d / o r human health in more than a quarter of the studied locations globally - mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and South America. The highest mean cumulative concentration was observed in Lahore, capital of Pakistan’s Punjab province, at 70.8 µg/L, with one sampling site on the Ravi River reaching a maximum cumulative concentration of 189 µg/L. This was followed by La Paz river in Bolivia (68.9 µg/L mean, 297 µg/L maximum) and the river system in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (51.3 µg/L mean, 74.2 µg/L maximum), according to the study.
LO N D O N, F E B 1 6 (AGENCIES): Hong Kong’s healthcare system has been overwhelmed by a huge surge in Covid-19 cases, with infected patients being treated outside crowded hospitals. The government has admitted it is struggling to contain the fifth wave of infections, fuelled by Omicron. But it has ruled out a city-wide lockdown. A record 4,285 new cases were reported on Wednesday, BBC reported. Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the local leaders to take “all necessary measures”, in a rare intervention. The comments may signal tighter controls in China’s special administrative region, which pursues a zero Covid policy - but without the strict mass
residents to get vaccinated, w i t h a r e l a t ive ly l ow uptake among the elderly in particular. President Xi said the Hong Kong government “must mobilise all power and resources to take all necessary measures” to control the outbreak, according to pro-Beijing newspapers Wen Wei Po and Ta Kung Pao. Responding to the m e s s a g e, H o n g Ko n g leader Carry Lam said local authorities would “mobilise all available manpower and resources and adopt all necessary measures” to control the situation. The work would focus on improving testing capacity, building treatment and isolation facilities, and receiving medical and other supplies from mainland China, she said.

the area got 25.8 centimeters (just over 10 inches) of rain within three hours Tuesday -- almost as much as during the previous 30 days combined. Footage posted on social media showed cars and houses being dragged away by landslides and water swirling through Petropolis and neighboring districts. “The neighbors came down running and I gave them shelter,” bar owner Emerson Torre, 39, told The Associated Press. But under torrents of water, the roofing collapsed. He managed to get his
mother and three other people out of the bar in time, but one neighbor and the person’s daughter were unable to escape. “It was like an avalanche, it fell all at once. I’ve never seen anything like it,” Torre said, as rescue helicopters hovered overhead. “Every neighbor has lost a loved one, has lost two, three, four members of the same family, kids.” Gov. Claudio Castro said on Twitter that he was mustering all heavy machinery belonging to several state secretariats to help dig out the buried area.

testing and lockdowns seen in mainland China. More than 10,000 people are waiting to be admitted to hospitals, as experts warn cases could surge to 28,000 daily. Nine people died from the virus in the past 24 hours, including a three-year old girl, authorities say. The city of 7.5 million people has confirmed about 26,000 infections since the start of the pandemic and just over 200 deaths, numbers far below other similar sized cities. But there is rising fatigue among residents who have had to endure tight measures that include the closure of most public venues like pubs, gyms and churches, and severe travel restrictions. by a desire to happily live in peace,” Zelenskyy said in a video address to the nation. We can defend our hom e only if we stay united. The Russian military hasn’t given the number of troops or weapons being withdrawn and offered few other details. And while Russian President Vladimir Putin has signalled he wants a diplomatic path out of the crisis, he hasn’t committed to a full withdrawal. Putin has emphasised that he did not want war and would rely on negotiations to achieve his key goal of keeping Ukraine from joining NATO. While those comments seemed to change the tenor, Western leaders insisted that the crisis was far from over. President Joe Biden s a i d o n Tu e s d ay t h a t American officials had not verified Russia’s claim, and British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace also said “it’s too soon to tell” whether the pullback is genuine, noting that the Russians haven’t taken the foot of the gas.

MOSCOW, FEB 16 (PTI): Russia said on Wednesday that it was returning more troops and weapons to bases, but NATO declared it saw no sign of a drawdown as fears that Moscow could invade Ukraine soon persisted. Russia has massed about 150,000 troops east, north and south of Ukraine, sparking Western concerns it was planning an attack. Moscow denies it has any such plans and this week said it was pulling back some forces and weapons, though it gave few details. Those claims have been met with skepticism from the US and its allies — even as they seemed to lower the temperature following weeks of escalating EastWest tensions. On Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry released a video showing a trainload of armoured vehicles moving across a bridge away from Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula that Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014. A day earlier, the ministry reported the start
RIO DE JANEIRO, FEB 16 (AP): The death toll from devastating mudslides and floods that swept through a mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro state has reached 34, according to a statement from local authorities early Wednesday. After the city of Petropolis was slammed by a deluge on Tuesday, there are fears the number of dead could rise higher as searchers picked through the wreckage. Rosilene Virgilio, 49, was in tears Wednesday as she recalled the pleas for help from a woman she couldn’t save. “Yesterday there was a woman screaming Help! Get me out of here!’ But we couldn’t do anything, the water was gushing out, the mud was gushing out,” she told The Associated Press. “Our city unfortunately is finished.” The state fire department said late Tuesday that more than 180 soldiers were already working in the stricken region, which saw hundreds of deaths from heavy rainfall in 2011. WINTER GAMES: Hall wins slopestyle gold
Alexander Hall BEIJING, FEB 16 (AGENCIES): Alexander Hall won freestyle skiing gold in the Winter Olympics men’s slopestyle as the USA claimed a one-two on the podium in Beijing. An opening run score of 90.01 was enough to earn the 23-year-old victory ahead of compatriot Nicholas Goepper. Goepper posted 86.48 on his second run to take silver, as Sweden’s Jesper Tjader finished in bronze with 85.35. B r i t a i n’s Ja m e s Woods, fourth at the 2018 Games, pulled out of qualification on Tuesday with a back injury. Hall, who failed to
qualify for the final at his first Games in 2018, completed his gold medal-winning first run with an innovative double 1080 pretzel. “It definitely was the best slopestyle run I’ve ever done, mainly because it embodied everything I love about skiing and how I approach skiing,” said Hall. “I’m really glad that the creativity was able to shine through and that got rewarded,” he added. “I figured I would just give it my all and go all-in right away.”
Slovakia knock out USA in men’s ice hockey
In ice hockey, the USA’s men’s team suffered
a shock quarter-final shootout defeat by Slovakia. With the match tied at 2-2 following a goalless overtime period, there were seven missed penalties before Slovakia’s Peter Cehlarik beat goalkeeper Strauss Mann - and Andy Miele could not keep the USA’s hopes alive with their final chance. Slovakia, seeking a first-ever Winter Olympic ice hockey medal, will meet the Russian Olympic Committee, the reigning champions, in the semifinals. The ROC defeated Denmark 3-1 as they they aim to become the most successful nation in men’s ice hockey with a 10th title. Finland, bronze medallists in 2018, are semifinalists again after a 5-1 victory over Switzerland, who conceded two late “empty net” goals after taking off their goaltender to put on an extra attacker to try to save the game. Canada - the joint most successful nation take on Sweden in the other quarter-final match later on Wednesday.
9 Kamila Valieva sample Arif Khan fails HI surprised by Batra’s strong finish men’s missive; to meet IOA chief ‘showed traces of 3 drugs’ toslalom event SPORTS
Kamila Valieva LO N D O N, F E B 1 6 (AGENCIES): Kamila Valieva’s anti-doping sample showed traces of three drugs that can be used to treat heart conditions, according to a New York Times report. The 15-year-old Russian figure skater is being allowed to compete at Beijing 2022 despite testing positive for banned angina drug trimetazidine. The report said it also showed hyproxen and LCarnitine, which are not banned. The combination of substances prompted “a lot of red flags”, United States anti-doping chief Travis Tygart said. “Those are three substances that are all used for increasing performance,” he told BBC sports editor Dan Roan on the Sports Desk Podcast, explaining they can increase endurance and
reduce fatigue. The case is ongoing and Valieva has the right to request the testing of her B sample, under World AntiDoping Agency (Wada) rules. She goes into Thursday’s free skate top of the standings and on track for victory - but if she finished in the top three, there will be no medal or ceremony until her anti-doping case has been concluded. The medals for the team event, where she helped the Russian Olympic Committee to victory before learning of the failed test, are also on hold for the same reason. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Tuesday that Valieva has argued her positive drugs test was due to contamination with her grandad’s medicine. Neither the IOC nor Russian Olympic Committee has commented on the report that the Stockholm laboratory that processed the sample had found evidence of three drugs. In its report, the New York Times cited documents filed in Valieva’s arbitration hearing this week and confirmed by someone who took part in the hearing.
NEW DELHI, FEB 16 (PTI): India’s campaign at the Winter Olympics came to a disappointing end on Wednesday after the country’s lone participant, alpine skier Arif Khan, logged a ‘Did Not Finish’ in the men’s slalom event here. The 31-year-old from Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir, who had finished 45th in the giant slalom event on Sunday, was unable to complete Run 1 at the Yanqing National Alpine Skiing Centre here. Since Khan, who was making his Winter Olympics debut, was unable to finish Run 1, he won’t be competing in the second run of men’s slalom event. Only 52 of the 88 starters finished the first run and will compete again in Run 2. Wearing bib no 79, Khan made a decent start, finishing the first intermediate in 14.40s and the second in 34.24s. However, he failed to complete the final section. Austria’s Johannes Strolz was the fastest skier in Run 1 with a time of 53.92s. The Norwegian duo of Henrik Kristoffersen (53.94s) and Sebastian FossSilevaag (53.98s) were second and third respectively.
NEW DELHI, FEB 16 (PTI): Taken aback by Narinder Batra’s stronglyworded message seeking explanation for the men’s hockey team’s inconsistent show, officials of the national federation will meet the Indian Olympic Association president this week even as a former great expressed surprise at his “interference”. IOA chief Batra, who also heads the International Hockey Federation (FIH), termed the Indian men’s hockey team’s performance in recent tournaments as “unacceptable,” and asked Hockey India to explain the reasons behind it in a message circulated on Tuesday. In the strongly-worded communication to HI president Gyanendro Ningombam, secretary general Rajinder Singh and CEO Elena Norman, Batra said he has serious concerns about the team’s performance after the historic bronze at the Tokyo Olympics. “The letter from Mr Batra caught Hockey India by surprise. After the Olympics, the team played first in the Asian Champions Trophy, where only eight players from the Olympic bronze medal-winning team were a part of the
Narinder Batra squad,” a source in the know of developments told PTI. “The team management tried out reserve players from the core group in the ACT as they had not played any international hockey for the last 2 years. The team just had a bad match against Japan in the semifinal and failed to defend the title. “In the second match of the Pro League against France, India dominated but some lapse in concentration cost them.” In his communication, Batra also pointed fingers towards the team management without specifying anything. Sources said he was not happy with some critical media reports after the loss to France, and HI top officials later reasoned with him.

Raheem Sterling scores his side fifth goal. with a clean sheet knowing that would have them in the driving seat with the away goals rule scrapped. But it must be much more positive in search of a win in the return on March 9 if it wants to end PSG’s dream of a first continental crown. The record 13time champion had keeper Courtois to thank with the Belgian diving low to his left to save Messi’s powerfully struck penalty just after the hour. Former Barcelona star Messi was otherwise quiet against his old rivals though did set up Mbappe with a
superb first-half pass only for Courtois to save. Mbappe was denied by an even better Courtois parry from his sharp turn and shot after the break and won the penalty by tricking Dani Carvajal into a reckless challenge. Neymer returned from injury off the bench just after the missed spot-kick and took until four minutes into added time to inspire the winner. His flick still left Mbappe with plenty to do and he finished calmly after evading two defenders. Mbappe has been widely linked with a sum-
mer switch to Real when his PSG contract expires and his magnificent display is unlikely to have dampened enthusiasm for the switch in Madrid.

the tie was as good as over by halftime. Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring after seven minutes with a goal initially ruled out but allowed after a VAR check, before Silva almost broke the net with a stunning halfvolley after 17 minutes to open his account. Mahrez then set up Phil Foden for a tap-in and Silva made it 4-0 just before halftime after being picked out by Raheem Sterling, with Sporting’s defence all at sea. There was no let-up after the break and former Benfica player Silva had a hat-trick goal ruled out for
offside before Sterling made it 5-0 with a superb curler before the hour mark. City could have added more to their tally on a night in which they made a huge statement in their bid to go one better than last season when they lost to Chelsea in the final. Kevin De Bruyne looked offside as he set up Mahrez for the opener, and City did not even celebrate as the linesman’s decision appeared clear cut, only for VAR to rule that the goal should stand. The strike was the Algerian’s 10th in his last 11 Champions League appearances, and soon enough it was two as Silva hammered home off the underside of the crossbar. The defending from Sporting – playing their first Champions League last-16 tie in 13 years – left much to be desired as Foden poked home the third, unchallenged, before Silva’s second, via a deflection, caused more frustration on the Jose Alvalade terraces. It was a matter of how many more City would get in the second half and Sterling scored the goal of the night, curling into the net from 25 metres for his 150th club career goal.

Several SAI coaches who were previously on contract, but whose contracts had ended, have been recruited back in service, as per their eligibility.
BCCI wants ‘collective vision’ as work on new NCA facility begins
BENGALURU, FEB 16 (IANS): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be hoping the new National Cricket Academy (NCA), whose foundation stone was laid by secretary Jay Shah on February 14, will nurture talent and support the growing cricket ecosystem, as the country’s players continue to bring back laurels -- the latest being the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup triumph in the Caribbean. While laying the foundations stone in Bengaluru, Shah also said that only a “collective vision” will see Indian cricket rise to new heights. “Laid the foundation stone for @BCCI’s new NCA. It is our collective vision to have a Centre of Excellence which nurtures talent and supports the cricket ecosystem in
India,” tweeted Shah. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly also posted images of the proposed facility, which will become not just the country’s but the world’s biggest cricketnurturing facility once it is completed. The BCCI had invited bids for turnkey design build construction services last year through a tender process. Among the things proposed at the new facility are a 16,000 square feet gymnasium, 40 practice pitches, including 20 having floodlight facility, 243 rooms of varying sizes, and an open-air theatre. According to the NCA blueprint, these and many other world-class facilities, such as indoor training facility comprising futsal, squash, badminton, basketball, tennis, cycling track and temperaturecontrolled pool. Ancillary provisions such as pharmacy, courier-dispatch facility, bank, ATM, salon, tuck shops will also come up on a 40acre land in Devanahalli Taluk, near the Bengaluru international airport.
