‘Leader of tukde-tukde gang’: PM launches vitriolic attack on Cong
NEW DELHI, FEB 7 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a no-holds-barred attack on the Congress, saying the Britishers have gone but the party has made the “divide and rule” policy its character and has become the “leader of the tukde-tukde gang”. Replying to the debate in Lok Sabha on Motion of Thanks to President Ram Nath Kovind’s address to the Parliament, Modi said the Congress’ “arrogance” has not gone away despite multiple electoral defeats and its “misdeeds” seem to indicate that it has made up its mind not to come to power for the next 100 years. He said that many states have sampled and rejected the grand old party while sharing data of states that rejected Congress. “After losing so many elections there is no change in your (Congress) ‘Ahankaar’ (ego),” he said. “Nagaland voted for Congress 24 years ago, Odisha voted for you 27 years ago. You won with a full majority in Goa in 1994, which is 28 years ago. In 1988, Tripura voted for Congress 34

years ago. UP, Bihar, Gujarat last voted for Congress government in 1985,” PM said. He asserted that many people have come and gone but the country is immortal. The country has been united and great, is so and will remain so, he said. The Congress was winning elections since 1971 on the slogan ‘eradicate poverty’, however, poverty didn’t end but people ousted that party, he said and added that people in several states have rejected the party for decades. “The question is not about elections, it is about intentions. Despite being in power for 50 years, why are the people of the country repeatedly rejecting them? Wherever people have

taken the right path, they did not allow you (Congress) to enter again,” he said. Modi noted that if the BJP loses one election its ecosystem works on it for months and slammed the Congress, saying that after so many defeats, “neither your arrogance goes away, nor your ecosystem allows your arrogance to go away”. The Prime Minister went on say that the Congress “crossed all limits” during the COVID pandemic. During the first wave, when people were following lockdowns and COVID norms, the Congress was standing at Mumbai Station and scaring innocent labourers into fleeing to their native states, he said.
“You have committed a big sin,” he added. D u r i n g h i s n e a r ly 100-minute speech, he also accused the opposition party of indulging in “blind opposition” and strengthening separatism. It is true that criticism is the ornament of a vibrant democracy, but “blind opposition” is an “insult to democracy”, he said. Modi said it would have been good if the Opposition would have accepted and welcomed with an open heart whatever the country has achieved by ‘Sabka prayas’. Hitting out at the Congress, Modi said, “Sometimes a thought comes to my mind, with their statements, their programmes, their misdeeds, the way you speak and connect with issues, it seems you have made up your mind of not coming back to power for 100 years. Nobody does this.” “If they had little hope that people would bless them they would not have done so. However, if you have only decided to (not come back to power) for a hundred years, I have also made preparations,” he said. (Cont’d on p-7)

Complete ban on sale and consumption of alcohol not feasible, says Governor Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, FEB 7 (NPN): Nagaland governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi on Monday said complete ban on sale and consumption of alcohol was “not feasible”, but the extent of consumption and sale of alcohol could be curtailed in a gradual or phased manner. Answering a question raised by one faculty member during his visit to St Joseph University (SJU) at Ikishe model village, Chümoukedima on Monday, Prof. Mukhi spoke of his experience as excise minister of Delhi government and lieutenant governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. He said that a thorough study conducted in the two territories proved the fallacy of prohibition. He claimed that the increase in sale of alcohol would result in higher income for States. He remarked: “Even if a State were to earn higher revenue through sale of alcohol, it would be spending more than the revenue in terms of healthcare, law and order and judicial processes.” This was stated in a press release issued by SJU. Earlier, the governor
Prof Jagdish Mukhi during his visit to CIHSR, Monday. (NP)
visited Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research (CIHSR) and held a meeting with the district administration and police at Police House, Chümoukedima. After inspecting the wards at CIHSR, he addressed some staff of the hospital, during which he acknowledged the services of all frontline warriors, including doctors, nurses and paramedics in handling Covid-19 pandemic effectively. He expressed happiness that CIHSR was breaking new grounds of learning as the only teaching hospital in the State running postgraduation DNB courses in Medicine, Surgery, Family Medicine and several other subjects. The Governor said that as two professions of healthcare and education
formed the twin foundations for development of a nation, CIHSR combined within itself both of these and was now ready to offer high quality medical care to people. He further remarked that students and administration of CIHSR have a crucial role to play in promoting access to quality healthcare and taking healthcare services to remotest corners of the State. With the goal of providing universal healthcare, he urged the State government and hospital management to take steps to make affordable healthcare services available to the farthest regions in the State, which would in turn aid in a progressive Nagaland marching ahead in the 21st century. DIMAPUR, FEB 7 (NPN): Angami Public Organisation (APO) has reiterated its resolve of discouraging and disallowing staging of protest rallies, strikes, imposing bandhs, etc, in the State Capital by any organisation, union and society whether registered or unregistered without its prior consultation. Reaffirming the February 3, 1996 resolution in this regard, APO president Razouvoto Chatsu and general secretary Savilie Kruneilie in a representation to the chief secretary
said the idea behind the resolution was to maintain and ensure peaceful atmosphere for a healthy living and all-round development. Noting that organising protest rallies in different forms by various organizations had become a regular event in the State Capital, thereby affecting normal life of citizens, particularly the students and business community, APO said many precious lives were lost and properties, both private and public, worth crores of rupees were dam-
aged in the past when such protests took a violent turn. APO acknowledged that public protest and staging a dharna for demanding justice from the government might be a constitutional right of citizens, adding that APO was even prepared to render its full support and cooperation through proper consultation. The organisation however appealed to Naga public in general not to misconstrue that APO was imposing its diktat upon others by virtue that State
capital fell under its jurisdiction or for that matter the national highway passed through the entire length and breadth of Angami’s land as often heard. APO explained that their main objective of adopting such a resolution was to protect and preserve the sanctity of true and vibrant Naga society from being spoiled and corrupted by few groups of people for self-aggrandisement and also to gain cheap popularity overnight at the cost of innocent public.
state of affairs in which private witnesses turn hostile for “obvious reasons”. “Long adjournments are being given after the completion of the chief examination, which only helps the defense to win them over at times, with the passage of time,” a bench of Justices S K Kaul and M M Sundresh said. “Thus, we deem it appropriate to reiterate that the trial courts shall endeavor to complete the examination of the private witnesses both chief and cross on the same day as far as possible,” the
bench said in its judgement. The top court delivered the verdict on the appeals filed by four appellants challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict which had sentenced them to life in connection with a case lodged in 2004. The bench said the apex court had already expressed its views on the need for a legislative remedy to curtail the menace of private witnesses turning hostile for obvious reasons. “Notwithstanding the above-stated directions is-
sued by this court …. we take judicial note of the factual scenario that the trial courts are adjourning the cross-examination of the private witnesses.....without any rhyme or reason, at the drop of a hat,” it said. “To further curtail this menace, we would expect the trial courts to take up the examination of the private witnesses first, before proceeding with that of the official witnesses,” the bench said. The top court said that copy of its judgement be circulated to all the
