KOHIMA, FEB 8 (NPN): In order to further strengthen the all-party United Democratic Alliance (UDA) government comprising of the NDPP, BJP, NPF and Independent, former chief minister and NPF Legislature Party leader TR Zeliang was elected as the chairman of the UDA on Tuesday. Further, putting all speculations to rest, it was also decided to induct one NPF legislator-- (Wakching constituency)YM Yollow Konyak into the council of ministers. The post fell vacant following the demise of senior NDPP member and minister CM Chang. When contacted, NPF sources said that TR Zeliang was unanimously elected as UDA chairman. Pending salary: DDANMA goes on mass casual leave
DIMAPUR, FEB 8 (NPN): Dimapur District ANM Association (DDANMA) Tuesday announced its decision to go on a mass casual leave with effect from February 7, 2022 till pending salaries were released. In a letter to chief medical officer (CMO) Dimapur, DDANMA president Naomi Loth and secretary Temsujungla stated that it was demoralizing to work without payment of salary for months together despite sincerely carrying out assigned duties. The association has cautioned that the department would be held responsible in the event any unwanted situation arose. Despite submitting a representation demanding release of pending salary since November 2021, they said there was no positive response from the department even after the expiry of deadline.

He declined to respond when asked who would be inducted and re-
marked that it was the prerogative of the chief minister, adding that the cabinet post that was laying vacant would thus be filled up. Further, as already reported by Nagaland Post, Kronu informed the media that the chief minister would campaign in Manipur for NPF candidates in mid-February. Manipur is scheduled to go for Assembly polls from February 27-March 5. NPF has fielded 10 candidates in the election. Meanwhile, responding to a media query, BJP legislator and adviser Mmhonlumo Kikon said that UDA was not a newlyformed government and that the decision to elect Zeliang as chairman was joint a decision where BJP legislators were also present. Therefore, he clarified the question “whether BJP was comfortable with the decision” did not arise.

Nagaland declared drought state of ‘moderate nature’ DIMAPUR, FEB 8 (NPN): Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) Tuesday informed that the state government has decided to declare “drought of a moderate nature” in the entire State of Nagaland. According to a DIPR report, NSDMA informed that the declaration of drought, based on the scanty deficit and less than normal rainfall that has been observed from March-November 2021, came into effect from September 15, 2021, and would continue to be in effect for six months, till further order. The declaration was
made after taking into account the conditions as arising from rainfall deficiency and poor crop conditions and the distress situation that had developed in almost the entire farming area affected by these conditions through field verification and poor harvest during 2021; and on the basis of reports available from the deputy commissioners and chairmen of the concerned DDMAs. Agriculture minister, G Kaito Aye, in June 16 last year, had also stated that Nagaland was facing a drought-like situation owning to the deficient and erratic rainfall.

Hijab row: K’taka orders closure of edn institutions for 3 days BENGALURU, FEB 8 (PTI/AGENCIES): With the ‘hijab’ row intensifying in several parts of Karnataka, the state government Tuesday announced closure of high schools and colleges for the next three days. In a tweet, Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai said: “I appeal to all the students, teachers and management of schools and colleges as well as people of Karnataka to maintain peace and harmony. State govt issues SOP for offline classes DIMAPUR, FEB 8 (NPN): State government Tuesday issued Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for conduct of physical/offline classes in the schools for students of IX-XII. A notification issued by state chief secretary stated that physical/offline classes would be up to 50% capacity, and any student, who has completed 15 years of age, would be allowed to attend only if he/she has taken at least one dose of vaccine against Covid-19 or has been tested negative for Covid-19 through either RT-PCR/ True Nat/CBNAAT once every 15 days. Further, all teachers and non-teaching staff would be fully vaccinated (taken both the doses) against Covid-19. DTE clarifies to RPP statement DIMAPUR, FEB 8 (NPN): Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) has clarified that whatever posts were advertised in local newspapers had been requisitioned to Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) for regular appointment. Reacting to a statement by Rising People’s Party (RPP), the directorate in a rejoinder further clarified that its letter of January 31 did not drag the name of NPSC or blamed the Commission for no action as claimed. It added that the rejoinder was necessitated in order to clear the doubt or misunderstanding that might have arisen after the statement by RPP.

DIMAPUR, FEB 8 (NPN): Nagaland on Tuesday recorded 59 fresh Covid-19 cases while one more patient succumbed to the infection. Of the fresh cases, 47 were from Dimapur, eight in Kohima and four in Mokokchung, takin the total caseload to 34986. Further, one more patient succumbed to the virus in Dimapur, pushing the death toll to 747 (including 4 non-Covid deaths but with positivity). Meanwhile, 1422628 persons had been inoculated against Covid-19 till Tuesday (805127 1st dose and 617501 2nd dose) while 16496 received their booster dose and a total of 51959 teenagers their first dose of Covaxin.

19 Rajya Sabha members set to retire in April NEW DELHI, FEB 8 (AGENCIES): Ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) five and Congress’ six lawmakers are amongst the 19 members of Rajya Sabha to retire in April. The retirements will lower the Congress’ Upper House tally to 28 from 34 and the BJP’s to 92 from 97. The BJP is the single largest party in the House of 245 members, presently having 237 members. Congress lawmaker Anand Sharma’s term in the Rajya Sabha will expire on April 2. He is a former minister who represents Himachal Pradesh.
