Citizenship Bill won’t harm interests of NE: PM CHANGSARI, FEB 9 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday assured the people of Assam and the North East that the citizenship bill will in no way cause harm to their interest. He was addressing a public rally here in the Assembly constituency of Assam health minister and BJP-led NEDA convener Himata Biswa Sarma. “It is a national commitment to the people of the North East that they will not be harmed in any way and citizenship will be only granted after due investigation and recommendation of the state governments,” Modi said. It must be understood that there is a difference between those who forcefully entered the country and those who were “forced to flee their homes to save their lives due to their faith. Both are not the same”, he said. “We have committed to provide shelter to those who are minorities in neighbouring countries and had to leave everything due to the

Govt appeals CSOs to reconsider state-wide bandh DIMAPUR, FEB 9 (NPN): State government on Saturday informed that it will propose adoption of a resolution to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the forthcoming budgets session scheduled to be held on February 21, as decided during the January 31 consultative meeting held in Dimapur. This was contained in a press communiqué issued by chief secretary Temjen Toy, while making an appeal to the civil society organizations (CSOs) to reconsider the proposed bandh on February 11. Also taking note of the forthcoming exams, Temjen Toy said students may need to travel for classes, exams etc. and the bandh will adversely impact them. “In view of this, and especially when we are united and very clear in our resolve to protect the interests of the State, a sincere appeal is being made to the Nagaland GBs’ Federation and all CSOs/NGOs to reconsider the bandh call and instead voice opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Bill unitedly in a democratic manner,” the chief secretary stated.

Plea against deregistration of NDPP dismissed

DIMAPUR, FEB 9 (NPN): Heeding the call of various civil societies, to oppose the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), under the banner of Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF), more organizations have extended support to the state-wide bandh on February 11 (6 a.m. to 4 p.m.). CNTC: Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has endorsed its full support to the state-wide bandh called by NGBF, its media cell stated in a press note. The council also reiterated its stand to fully support the decision taken on February 6 at a meeting at Hotel Saramati called by the NGBF and attended by various organisations. In this regard, CNTC has directed its constituent units to fully enforce the bandh in their respective districts and jurisdiction. NCD: Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has also extend solidarity to the anti-CAB state-wide bandh called by NGBF and Naga civil societies, while urging all to stand united against the Bill. NCD general secretary, Thsapongkyu Sangtam in a press note reminded all that the Bill was not only

detrimental to the people of North Eastern states, but intended to reduce the indigenous people of the region to a minority in their own land. NCD was apprehensive that CAB, once voted into law, the Northeast including Nagaland will become dumping ground for illegal immigrants. It accused Government of India of trying to confer citizenship to foreigners on the basis of religious pretext. Northeast has always been plaguing with illegal immigrant issues and the passing of the bill will be an added burden to the already limited resources of the region, NCD stated. NCD therefore, appealed to the state government and also the lone Rajya Sabha member to oppose the bill and vote against it. Further, NCD urged all the tribal hohos/union presidents in Dimapur to take responsibility to implement the bandh peacefully in their respective colonies. NPF: Opposition NPF has extended its full support and cooperation to the total bandh across the state called by the NGBF to demonstrate the opposition against the controversial Bill.

in the Rajya Sabha.” Conrad, who was reelected as the NPP national president Saturday for the second consecutive term (2019-22), asserted that the party unanimously passed a resolution to oppose the CAB and the same will be submitted to the Government of India. It may be mentioned that the Centre is likely going to table the contentious bill in the Rajya Sabha on February 12. While reiterating that the NPP will continue to stand against any government, which is in favour of the bill, Conrad, however, said that there will be consequences like fall of the government “but we will look into all that at the later stage.” Besides being in power in Meghalaya, the NPP

DIMAPUR, FEB 9 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) Saturday informed that the Congress president Rahul Gandhi on February 9 declared that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill will be defeated in the Rajya Sabha. NPF president, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu has directed all its divisional presidents and party leaders to cooperate and actively participate in bandh in their respective places. He further asked party workers to ensure that the bandh went off peacefully and to send a clear message to the NDA government at the Centre that the Nagas in totality was opposed to the CAB. The NPF also lambasted the statement made by BJP general secretary, Ram Madhav that the NDA government will place CAB in Rajya Sabha for approval in the ongoing session as a supplementary. Despite the entire North East region making hue and cry to scrap the Bill once and for all, NPF said the NDA was ready to go with the contentious Bill harming the interests of the North East people. Though hectic lobbying has been taking place to get the Bill passed in the Rajya Sabha, NPF said its Rajya Sabha MP, KG Kenye will vote against the Bill if it is placed in the house. NPF has also asked the general Naga public not to succumb to any pressure

but to be united in one voice and fight against the scraping of the Bill and protect the indigenous people of the state as well as the Northeast region. ENPO: Taking note of the negative impact of CAB on the people of the state, Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) has resolved to oppose the Bill tooth and nail and decided to impose bandh in the ENPO jurisdiction on February 11 from 6 a.m. to 12 noon. ENPO has also appealed to the state government to call for an emergency assembly session and pass a resolution opposing the CAB. ENPO has clarified that in view of the ensuing HSLC and HSSLC exam scheduled from February 12, the bandh will be observed only for six hours so as to enable students and school authorities enough time for the preparation of exams without any disturbances as the future of the students cannot be compromised. After that, the NITI Ayog getting involved is not a very desirable thing. Previous chairmen of the commission have also said that the NITI Aayog cannot be in the picture of releasing the official statistics. They are the users of the data and cannot get involved.” He said it was important for the commission that its autonomy was maintained. Mohanan also said that the government’s unwillingness to release the report was “the last straw”, forcing him to step down. “Over the years, we have seen recommendations of the commission are not taken seriously. In the 2017-18 report, we

clearly mentioned that we are pained that the government is not taking seriously the recommendations of the commission.” Mohanan also made it clear his resignation was not due to personal reasons as stated by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar. “In my letter, I made it very clear I have specific instances and we thought our continuing in the commission was not serving any purpose because the commission was not very effective and there’s nothing personal in that. The government should take note of the issues and improve the system. And (J.V.) Meenakshi, who resigned along with me, also said the same thing,” Mohanan said. He said he had flagged the delay in the report’s release, but got no response from the government.

DIMAPUR, FEB 9 (NPN): After, Mizo National Front announced its decision to cut ties with the BJP-led NDA if the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is not revoked, the National People’s Party (NPP) on Saturday also warned its alliance partner that the party was ready to quit the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) if the controversial Bill is passed in the Rajya Sabha. In January, Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga said: “The ruling party would withdraw its support to the NDA if situation arises,” he said. Addressing the media after the NPP general body meeting in Shillong, Meghalaya chief minister, Conrad K Sangma said: “As a party, we have unanimously decided to break ties with the NDA if the CAB is passed

backs the BJP-led governments in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland. NPP further decided to contest all 25 seats in North East in 2019 Lok Sabha election and 60 seats in Arunachal Pradesh. “As a party we are keen to contest all the Lok Sabha seats in the North East. We will work out a mechanism and see how we can go forward. We as party want to play a pivotal role in voicing the concerns of the people and provide them a common platform to champion the cause of North East,” said Sangma. Party leaders from across the North Eastern region attended the meeting including Nagaland unit president Ato Yepthomi and advisor Industries & Commerce, NIDC, Imnatiba Jamir.

He opined that clean drinking had been a big issue faced by shoppers in Dimapur, and hoped that the drinking water facility would help solve this. Metsubo hoped that more such projects in and around the city could be implemented. The minister also urged individuals, groups and organizations to

come forward and contribute in whatever little way they could to make Dimapur better. Tovihoto Ayemi lauded the DLST and pointed out that the location at New Market Junction where the tower was constructed had been among the filthiest places in the centre of Dimapur. Now, with the Jubilee Tower, not only is it pleasing aesthetically, but it has become a location

that provides a necessary service to society, he said. Echoing Metsubo’s sentiment, he also called upon the people to be responsible and contribute to society in any manner they could. Moatoshi Longkumer, in his speech as special invitee, also lauded the DLST for giving back to society. He also reiterated the call to the people to come together and undertake similar social service works. He further urged people to make the only commercial capital better by maintaining cleanliness, and living as law abiding citizens. NEW DELHI, FEB 9 (IANS): P.C. Mohanan, who resigned from the National Statistical Commission (NSC) last month over the government “withholding” the report showing high unemployment rate during 2017-18, has said the commission is the final authority on the NSSO report and the NITI Aayog should not have got involved. The former head of the NSC, also dismissed the NITI Aayog’s claim that it was a draft report and was not ready for release as the “government had not approved it”. He said that the NITI Aayog’s argument was “unacceptable”. “Once the report is approved by the commission, it is known as the final report. You cannot say it has to be approved by the government. DIMAPUR, FEB 9 (NPN): Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) has reminded the Naga populace “it is high time the Naga people automatically stand up and assert their rights without the JCPI or any entity enforcing any ‘Common Naga Agenda” through coercive methods.” JCPI through its media cell said: “To view the February 11 bandh as an inconvenience would be most unfortunate and unpatriotic.” It said the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 strikes at the core of Naga identity, “therefore every Naga should take it upon himself to stand up for their own rights without viewing the bandh as meaningless or an unnecessary inconvenience to the public.” Though JCPI categorically stated that “under no circumstances will the bandh be called off,” it however decided not to deploy volunteers to enforce the bandh anywhere across the state. The committee instead appealed to the good conscience of all Nagas– students, government servants, traders, businessmen, professionals

and the public, to respect and honour the call of Nagaland bandh, which has been called to send a message to the Centre that the preservation and the protection of the indigenous lives in North East is of outmost priority. While informing that press and media were automatically exempted, JCPI said police, district administration, medical & emergency services, army & paramilitary forces, students and teachers on exam duty, pre-engaged programmes like weddings, autorickshaws/transportations ferrying students on exam, train/ flight passengers, NSCN (I-M) membres attending the National Hoho, etc. are also exempted from the purview of the bandh. JCPI however requested those exempted to limit their movements. Morung Lecture XII: Imagining 2019

Participants advocate for people’s involvement in the policy making process Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, FEB 9 (NPN): The “Morung Lecture XII: Imagining 2019” program was held at Don Bosco Institute of Development and Leadership (DBIDL), Don Bosco Campus, Riverbelt Colony on February 9. Advisor, IT Science and Technology, New and Renewable Energy, Mmhonlumo Kikon, speaking at the program, said that in today’s context, if people talked about change, they needed to know how policy decisions were framed in the past and then discuss how policy decision should be made today. Citing examples of how the government of Nagaland currently balances the ratio of teachers and students, the advisor said it is one of the instances of correcting wrong decisions of the past. He said a lot of time and energy is wasted in addressing wrong policies retroactively. On this K

subject, Mmhonlumo said that he imagined future policies being structured around realistic assessment of the grassroots, with communication between the community and government. He also dwelt on the initiative of the state government on communitization that envisions basic service delivery through intended policies, and spoke about the need to review the impact communitization had had. Mmhonlumo said that most developmental activities were concentrated in Kohima and Dimapur.

“70% of the population are rural area and yet 30% benefit from the majority of government policy”, Kikon pointed out. Coming back to the education sector, he said the practise of installing proxy teachers was an ethical problem. Responding to a query about independent administration for Eastern Nagaland, Mmhonlumo admitted that development had been scarce especially in this area, and suggested that “tribalism in imparting development policy needs to

be addressed.” Highlighting the concept of progress, Eleutheros Christian Society (ECS) managing director Phutoli Chigmak brought up the need to retrospectively look into issues before reacting. Drawing attention to community participation, she said that the community was an important component and it could also impact policies if it took the initiative and worked hand in hand with the government. But she also pointed out that the grassroots community cannot question authorities. Discussing customary laws, Chingmak suggested that youngsters need to go back to the community to learn these laws. Inspite of fundamental rights, Nagas are bound by customary laws and are groomed with bias and grow up with these biases. In regard to the economic sector’s development, Chigmak lamented the lack of marketing linkages. She

requested the government of Nagaland to take serious note of farmers and what they produce and try to build stronger ties in areas like marketing and linkages, especially with farmers of rural communities. Dr. Akum Longchari, publisher of The Morung Express in his concluding remark advocated for interactions such as the Morung Lecture XII: Imagining 2019, during or before policy making, as opposed to post counselling after the policies had been made. Dr. Longchari expressed his view that the people’s involvement was needed in the policy making process. He asked if the state was reflecting the values of the people or the people were having to reflect the values of the state. On the lecture, Dr. Longchari said that the discussion had been very helpful as it went to the “micro level” of villages and issues.

The prohibitory order was effective from Friday at 5 pm and will continue until further order is issued in this regard, an official source said Saturday. “Any person violating this order is liable to be punished under section 188 IPC,” the order stated. The prohibitory order was issued amidst the gaining anti-CAB protest

across the state, particularly in the valley districts where people, particularly womenfolk and students were staging various forms of protests opposing the passing of CAB 2016 by the Lok Sabha and withdrawal of the same before passing by the Rajya Sabha. In the continued protests, normal business transaction in Imphal, the busi-

ness hub of the state was brought to a grinding halt after shops and business establishments were down their shutters during a mass protest staged by the women vendors of iconic all-women market in Imphal. Hundreds of women vendors of the all-women markets suspended their business of the day starting from early today morning

and remained seated on the street in the heart of the capital city. Women street vendors also join the protest, staged by blocking the street at the Ima Keithel (women market). With the protest continued till late evening, a large number of police and central paramilitary force armed with riot gears have been detailed in and around the Ima Keithel. Showing solidarity to the protest staged by the women vendors, all shops and business establishments in the three major city markets – Khwairamband Bazar, Paona Bazar and Thangal Bazar – remained close for the day. Convenor of MANPAC Phundreimayum Abdullah who appeared at the protest site asked the people to be ready to fight while expressing apprehension of tabling the Bill in the Rajya Sabha in the coming few days. Pointing towards the

large number of security force deployed nearby the protest site, he said that the law enforcing agencies must know that right to protest by the people is entitled by the Constitution. Abdullah alleged that India gover nment was carrying out racist policy, threatening the very existence of the indigenous population in the region. D E S A M ’s a dv i s o r Moirangthem Angamba strongly condemned the legislators of the state while alleging them of remaining as a silent spectator without any concern for the future survival of indigenous people of the region. He called for boycotting the legislators who remained silent at this crucial juncture. Sit-in-protests were also staged at various parts of the twin capital districts by womenfolk and students at various places. Police had a hard time to open the roads which were blocked fully and half the way.

Shillong on Friday evening from Kolkata via Guwahati after the Supreme Court, while hearing the matter on Tuesday, directed him to join the CBI probe at a neutral place in Shillong. He was accompanied with three other senior state police officers - Additional Police Commissioner Javed Shamim, STF chief Murulidhar Sharma and CID Chief Praveen Kumar Tripathi. “There is no question of not cooperating. He has cooperated before and is doing now too. We are here because of the Supreme Court order,” Kumar’s legal counsel, Biswajit Deb told journalists after emerging out of the CBI office. Meghalaya Police is providing adequate security cover to Kumar while the CBI office at Oakland has turned into a fortress with the Meghalaya Police Special Force (SF) 10 guarding it. M e g h a l aya Po l i c e Chief R Chandranathan walked by the CBI office with his bodyguard while his Kolkata counterpart was being grilled by the interrogators but refused

to speak to some journalists there. “The DGP came to see the security arrangement but he did not speak to anyone,” a Meghalaya Police official said. A CBI team was allegedly roughed up and detained for a few hours when it went to question Kumar at his residence in Kolkata last Sunday in connection with its probe into the Saradha and Rose Valley chit fund cases. Following the face-off between the CBI and Kolkata Police, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee staged a sit-in protest for over 45 hours. The matter went before the Supreme Court which asked Kumar to appear before the agency in a neutral place but restrained it from arresting him. Meanwhile, Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy, in a tweet, welcomed both the Kolkata Police Commissioner and the CBI team to Shillong. “Pity I’m out of town! Welcome to Meghalaya, the abode of the clouds. Happy questioning, happy answering,” Roy tweeted.

Opposition competing in Olympics to deride me: Modi Agartala, Feb 9 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday hit out at the opposition, saying the main job of the ‘mahamilawatwalas’ is to deride him and it seems they were all competing in an Olympics of hurling abuses at him. Calling the opposition a ‘mahamilawat’ (great adulteration) again, he said its leaders are only involved in “holding each other’s hands in meetings in Delhi and Kolkata for photographs”. “The job of the ‘mahamilawatwalas’ is only to hurl abuses and more abuses on Modi. It is as if an Olympics is on to deride Modi,” he told a rally here. Continuing his tirade, Modi said political parties who cannot see eye to eye in West Bengal, Kerala or Tripura are now uniting to “abuse” him. “They (opposition parties) are dreaming of forming a government in Delhi as soon as possible which will only be involved in corruption, malpractice

and nepotism ... They cannot form a ‘majbut sarkar’ (strong government) but only a ‘majbur sarkar’ (helpless government),” he said. “The results of the coming Lok Sabha elections will show what it takes to lie to the people,” Modi said. Hitting out at the Left Front without naming it, he said it was not interested in doing anything for the unorganised sector or the farmers when it was in power in the state. Noting that sufficient funds were provided to Tripura in the last four and half years under NDA rule at the Centre, he said the money was not properly utilised due to the attitude of the erstwhile Left Front government in the state. The present BJP government is taking development of Tripura to newer heights, he claimed and appealed to the people to “identify and unmask” those leaders who had not fulfilled their task in developing Tripura.

Twitter CEO decline to appear before Parl panel

New Delhi, Feb 9 (PTI): Twitter CEO and top officials have declined to appear before the Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology that had summoned them on Monday over the issue of safeguarding citizens’ rights on social media platforms, citing “short notice of the hearing”. Sources in the parliamentary panel, however, said on Saturday that the social network company cited “short notice of the hearing” as the reason despite being given 10 days for its top officials to travel to India. The parliamentary committee, headed by BJP MP Anurag Thakur, had issued a summon to Twitter via an official letter on February 1. The parliamentary committee meeting was scheduled for February 7, but was later postponed to February 11 to allow the Twitter CEO and senior officials more time to make themselves available, the sources said. TMC MLA shot dead in WB

Satyajit Biswas (File)

KOLK A T A , F EB 9 (AGENCEIS): Trinamool Congress (YMC) MLA Satyajit Biswas from Krishnagunj in Nadia district was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Saturday. Biswas was shot dead during a Saraswati Puja celebration in the area. The assailants pumped bullets into Biswas after he disembarked from the stage where a cultural programme was taking place. Nadia is a district bordering Bangladesh. Satyajit Biswas was involved with the Matua community, which has remained politically sensitive both for the TMC and the BJP. District TMC president Gourishankar Dutta has blamed the BJP and followers of Mukul Roy for this murder. However, BJP state president Dilip Ghosh has denied the charges and blamed the factional fight in the TMC. He further demanded that culprits should be identified immediately. Dilip Ghosh, while speaking to CNN-News18 over the phone, said that the CBI should look into the case of the TMC MLA murder as the BJP doesn’t have faith in West Bengal police.

Rs 59 crore crisis stares at Mayawati; SP plays safe L u c k n o w, F e b 9 (IANS): An ‘elephantine’ crisis of over Rs 59 crore stares at Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati after the Supreme Court observed that she refund the money used in installation of statues of elephants, BSP founder Kanshiram and her own statues in parks built in various parts of Uttar Pradesh. According to conservative estimates, the four-time chief minister spent Rs 3.49 crore on her own statues, Rs 3.77 crore on that of her mentor Kanshiram and Rs 52.02 crore on elephants, her party’s election symbol. The ‘tentative view’ aired by a bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Deepak Gupta that “Madam Mayawati reimburse to the exchequer public money” she spent on these statues, is learnt to have sent the Dalit powerhouse in a tailspin and closeted with a battery of legal eagles, including party general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra. That even ally Samajwadi Party (SP) has left her to fend for herself has only aggravated her problems. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, who till not long ago used every public outing to hit out at ‘Bua ji’ for plundering public money for her statues while being alive, now ducks questions. “Well, I have not read the whole observation made by the apex court. The

BSP lawyers will tackle the matter,” he said. After assuming power in 2012, the SP government had ordered a probe into the memorials and the report revealed expenses of Rs 5,919 crore on parks and memorials built in Lucknow, Noida and Greater Noida. Of this, over Rs 400 crore was spent on purchase of stones alone. A CAG report, presented in the UP assembly in 2014 had mentioned a huge scam in the construction of the memorials built on 750 acres of land. The matter, listed for final adjudication on April 2, worries the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister for two reasons -- one that the judicial reprimand could impact the party’s prospects in the runup to the Lok Sabha polls and prompt the opposition, specially the BJP, to yet again call her ‘Daulat and not Dalit-ke-beti’. Second, it could burn a massive hole in her purse.

There are 152 statues of elephants in the Ambedkar Park in Lucknow and 56 in a park in Noida. The cost of one statue of an elephant is estimated to be around Rs 50 lakh. Apart from using public money, Mayawati is also accused of wrongdoing in awarding contracts for the memorials. The public interest litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court demanding an end to the use of public money for political gains alleges a large chunk of budget of several state government departments, including culture, was routed for the purpose. The petitioner, Advocate Ravikant, said while this was brazen use of public money to further political interests while in power, it also was in contravention of various rules of the Election Commission, which, in the runup to the 2012 assembly elections, got the elephant statues covered with polythene sheets.

Church revokes transfer orders of four Kerala nuns Ko ttayam , F e b 9 (IANS): Four Kerala nuns, who protested last year demanding rape accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal’s arrest, and were handed transfer orders, got relief on Saturday when the church authorities cancelled transfer orders and allowed them to continue, here at the convent, as long as the case was in court. “We have received a letter from the new Bishop of Jalandhar stating all the transferred nuns can remain at the Kuruvilangad convent, till the case is over,” said Sister Anupama. The news of revocation of transfer orders was read out by Sister Anupama, one of the four nuns, at a public meeting organised near here, to protest against the manner in which they (the nuns) were being hounded. The ‘protest’ meeting saw good participation from a cross section of the society. But trouble broke out when five people, believed to be sympathisers of Bishop Franco, created a flutter at the venue. The five protesters were quickly taken into custody and removed from the venue. Last month, the four nuns, who are presently attached to the Kuruvilangad convent, were transferred to four different places in the country.

The government did not respond to our demand, neither did anyone come to talk to us, so we were forced to take this step.” “We have good CM and a good PM. We want that they listen to the demands of Gujjar community. It isn’t an uphill task for them to provide reservation,” asked protesters sitting on railway track in Maksudanpura of Sawai Madhopur, ANI said. Gujjars are demanding 5% reservation under the special backward classes (SBC) category in education and jobs. After a similar agitation in 2007 and 2008, the state government gave them this quota but the bills were later stayed by the Rajasthan high court. Railway officials confirmed that routes of several trains were changed due to the ongoing agitation. A total of 25 trains have either been partially cancelled or their routes were diverted since Friday. Agra Fort train has been cancelled, Mathura-Sawai Madhupur passenger train, Shatabdi Express and Ratlam Mathura Memu have been partially cancelled.

New Delhi, Feb 9 (AGENCIES): The Congress on Saturday accused the ‘BJP’s gang of three’ -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party chief Amit Shah and senior leader BS Yeddyurappa -- of trying to ‘topple a democratically elected government in Karnataka’. “BJP’s gang of three is trying to topple the Karnataka government. This gang of PM Modi, Amit Shah and Yeddyurappa is using the Karnataka governor as a puppet to topple the elected government of the state” Congress’s Randeep Singh Surjewala said in New Delhi. On Friday, Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy had accused the BJP of trying to topple the state government as he released two audio clips purportedly of opposition leader BS Yeddyurappa trying to allegedly bribe JD(S) legislator Naganagouda Kandkur with Rs 25 crore and a promise of a ministerial berth. The president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s state unit BS Yeddyurappa, on his part, dismissed the audio clips as “fake” and

Randeep Singh Surjewala (File) “a concocted story”. HD Kumaraswamy released the clips at a hurriedly called press conference and claimed Yeddyurappa called Naganagouda’s son Sharangouda Kandkur early on Friday attempting to entice his father, who is an MLA from Gurmitkal. The clips feature conversations allegedly between BS Yeddyurappa and Sharangouda Kandkur. The other was allegedly between Sharangouda and Pritam Gowda, the BJP MLA from Hassan. Kumaraswamy also hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah, saying the opposition’s campaign,

termed “Operation Lotus”, was being carried out with their permission. “Without the knowledge of the prime minister, is it possible to do all this?” he asked. The ruling coalition partners Congress and JD(S) have been accusing the BJP of trying to topple their nine-month-old government with various offers, including bribe in cash and ministerial berths, a charge the opposition party has rejected. Yeddyurappa told reporters in the state capital that Kumaraswamy had “concocted” the story to hide his failures and inability to keep the JD(S) and Congress flock together.

Rafale allegations won’t harm BJP in elections: Goyal BJP promise jobs ahead Mumbai, Feb 9 (PTI): The Opposition’s “baseless” allegations about the Rafale fighter jet deal will not affect the BJP’s poll prospects, Union minister Piyush Goyal said here Saturday. He was speaking to the media after the party launched “Bharat ke mann ki baat, Modi ke saath”, a month-long exercise to seek people’s suggestions to help it prepare its manifesto. Asked if the Rafale issue, which the Congress has been raising consistently, alleging corruption, will impact the BJP in coming Lok Sabha polls, Goyal replied in the negative. “We have been going around the country and nobody has ever raised this issue and nobody has ever worried about it, because there is complete trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The people of India trust Modi,” Goyal said.

Piyush Goyal (File) “Absolutely baseless” allegations were being made, he said, adding, “These insinuations have no basis at all. So, I don’t think this is an issue in the elections.” The party is happy that a “non-issue” like Rafale “kept the Opposition busy while the BJP focuses on development and reaches out to the people”, the Union minister said. Asked whether there would be simultaneous Lok Sabha and Maharashtra Assembly polls, Goyal indicated that

it was unlikely. There has to be a consensus among all the parties for conducting simultaneous polls across the country, as proposed by prime minister Narendra Modi, and “it (the concept) could not be applied selectively”, he said. Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar were also present on the occasion. On state Congress chief Ashok Chavan’s statement that they would like the newly-appointed Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra to campaign in Maharashtra, Goyal said the BJP “welcomes” it, and every party should put its “best foot forward”. “Now it is accepted that their party president and leader (Rahul Gandhi) has failed. So they must make efforts (to win polls). They should find someone else if she too

fails,” he said. “It is unfortunate for the country that dynastic politics has reached a level where they do not have any leader beyond the family,” he added. On NCP supremo Sharad Pawar hinting that he may once again fight a Lok Sabha election (after announcing some years ago that he was retiring from electoral politics), Goyal said, “We welcome it...so that we get one more opportunity to defeat him from one more seat.” Asked about Twitter CEO and its top officials declining to appear before the Parliamentary Committee on IT which had summoned them over the issue of safeguarding citizens’ rights on social media platforms, Goyal said it was for the Rajya Sabha Chairman and Lok Sabha Speaker to decide the course of action, and not for the government.

of elections in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Feb 9 (IANS): The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday assured several welfare measures in Odisha, including permanent land records, jobs to youths and pucca houses, if it is voted to power in the forthcoming elections. “We will fulfil the dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi if BJP is voted to power in Odisha. We assure that every poor across the country will get the permanent land record and pucca house by 2022,” said Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Pradhan was addressing the party’s “Pratisruti Samabesh” here. He said the BJP will also provide other necessary facilities like drinking water, toilets, electricity and LPG connections to people in Odisha, and targeted the Biju Janata Dal (BJD)-led Odisha government for fail-

ing to do so in their last 19years tenure. The BJD in its 2014 election manifesto had promised to provide pucca houses to all poor people. But it has failed to fulfil the promise, he said. He also pointed out that while 20 lakh people in the state don’t have land records, about 30 lakh people have no houses yet. The BJP has has lined up several Central leaders to campaign in the state ahead to the General and Assembly elections. The BJP President Amit Shah will be addressing a party meeting at Sambalpur on February 15. Union Home Ministers Rajnath Singh, Giriraj Singh and Manoj Sinha, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will be visiting several parts of the state under the campaign “Parivartan Samabesh”, which will continue till March.

Way ahead

hen Rabindranath Tagore penned his famous poem of freedom with the words “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high, where knowledge is free. Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;”it hasn’t stopped inspiring. The words continue to resonate across India and even in remote Nagaland. In the recent past, the topic of truth famine and fear psychosis that continues to plague Naga society, has echoed deeply. In this regard, there is need to remind the Biblical assurance in the following: “ For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.(2 Tim. 1:7). In a state where more than 85% live in villages and still struggling to make ends meet, it is necessary to include such concerns into the domain for a change that encompasses moral, material and spiritual aspects. Having prided itself as the largest and most influential institution, the church has fallen much behind. Society wants to see as it has heard enough. Not seeing is because of lack of moral courage and that’s why it is silent on many issues. The culture and ethos can never thrive in the silence of the grave. Yet contemporary culture seems to promote a dreadful silence. Silence can sometimes be eloquent. Conversations consist not only in what is said but what is not said- the cold silence, the disapproving silence, the appreciative silence, the reverent silence, the baffled silence. Society is hurting and the environment exudes a fissiparous uncertainty which could prove disastrous in the near future. Social bond is being removed and replaced by tribal hegemony. Structural stability embraces the mutually reinforcing goals of social peace, respect for the rule of law and human rights, and social and economic development. People parrot the word “freedom” cheaply but without realising how much it can mean and do. Freedom without love results in tyranny as it becomes a counterfeit freedom which seeks to manipulate and dominate under its name. Standing up for what is right and what is true irrespective of the race or community of the other, will be testimony of the genuineness of Christian faith and also the bond of Christian love that helps bind various people together. Unfortunately, a culture of bullying has made society live under a cloud. This in turn spreads uncertainty and promotes organised, flourishing anarchy to dominate. A distrustful society has nurtured a monstrous society where depredations are rife between offenders and victims, between the powerful and weak and the rich and poor. Seeking to dominate has turned society upside down. Dominating people are abusive people. Only animals, the lowliest of God’s creations live in domination of one another. Conversations consist not only in what is said but what is not said. Wrongs that are not righted or not corrected happen again, when moral cowardice sets in, it prevents people to think and repent. If there are societies and communities throughout the world that understand and accept realities, it is a measure of their mental and spiritual progress to maturity. This should be supported by dynamic and representative political structures, including accountable security systems capable of managing change and resolving disputes. It is from there on that politicians and leaders of society see how they can address the realities and apply their wisdom to see the road ahead.

DailyDevotion Are You Exhausted Spiritually? The everlasting God…neither faints nor is weary. —Isaiah 40:28 Exhaustion means that our vital energies are completely worn out and spent. Spiritual exhaustion is never the result of sin, but of service. Whether or not you experience exhaustion will depend on where you get your supplies. Jesus said to Peter, “Feed My sheep,” but He gave him nothing with which to feed them (John 21:17). The process of being made broken bread and poured-out wine means that youhave to be the nourishment for other people’s souls until they learn to feed on God. They must drain you completely— to the very last drop. But be careful to replenish your supply, or you will quickly be utterly exhausted. Until others learn to draw on the life of the Lord Jesus directly, they will have to draw on His life through you. You must literally be their source of supply, until they learn to take their nourishment from God. We owe it to God to be our best for His lambs and sheep, as well as for Him. Have you delivered yourself over to exhaustion because of the way you have been serving God? If so, then renew and rekindle your desires and affections. Examine your reasons for service. Is your source based on your own understanding or is it grounded on the redemption of Jesus Christ? Continually look back to the foundation of your love and affection and remember where your Source of power lies. You have no right to complain, “O Lord, I am so exhausted.” He saved and sanctified you to exhaust you. Be exhausted for God, but remember that He is your supply. “All my springs are in you” (Psalm 87:7).

Post-mortem

How our roads The ‘future’ of this country is in distress remind us of the Bible O “S n the 7th of February, the distressed youths of this nation reclaimed the streets of New Delhi under the banner ‘Young India Adhikar March’. The march was significant because it created a common and inclusive platform to raise individual concerns adding a flavor of diversity, and second, it was a wakeup call to the sleeping (drunk with power) and blind leaders that the youths are no longer willing to act as mute spectators and will reassert their right of democratic dissent, especially with the elections around the corner. However, the larger picture that pans out of this march was that the ‘future’ of this country feels threatened within their state and by the center owing to their inefficacies. Terming the youths of this nation as synonymous to the future has become a clichéd term, which has somehow lost its essence regrettably because it has been overused by political leaders and many others. Called as the ‘future’ but without future. As India prepares to brace the huge alteration in demographic dividend where it is estimated that by 2020, the median age of India will be merely 28 years, the question arises, how prepared are we to reap the benefits of it?. The positive take away of this impending alteration if effectively utilized is that India has the opportunity to secure better economic growth since it will have larger working force

t the advent of the millennium, while serving as an underling in the Prog section of Doordarshan Kohima, I came across a television documentary entitled ‘Little Drops’ produced for Doordarshan by Metevinuo Sakhrie, one of the most creative and adept mass media communicators among the Nagas. The documentary dwelt on the contribution of all smallscale Naga entrepreneurs whose contribution to the socio-economic development of the state was as indispensable as little drops of water to the formation of the eternal oceans. I was so impressed by the over-all quality of the documentary that I had the confidence to later aver (a tad pompously, perhaps!) in a NE Zonal DD meeting in Dibrugarh that Nagas had the potential to be second to none in many trades including production of television programmes and that we did not need baby-sitters. I was provoked to make that statement by a condescending (almost hypocritical, even contemptuous) remark by a DD bigwig from the national capital that producers from the North-East needed more guidance as they were just starting while their counterparts in the mainland had gone a long way. That Godsent remark opened up the vent to release my pent-up resentment, yes, resentment by giving a piece of my mind for the benefit of those who harbour ill-informed, misconceived and presumptuous notions about the Nagas. Call it Naga headhunter’s mentality, if you will, but I mumbled ‘take that’ before the customary ‘thank you’ at the end of my presentation! Meanwhile, I felt vindicated and suitably proud when several Naga television producers subsequently went on to bag coveted awards in prestigious national-level festival-cum-competitions. 1. Writers/expositors“Writers shape the future” as iterated recently by the undisputed master of politics, Dr. S.C. Jamir. Here, I beg to present a list of four writers/expositors who have been injecting Little Drops of wisdom, truth and courage into the ailing Naga system. a) Niketu Iralu- Fortune favoured me to be part of the audience savouring the discourse of this gem of a Naga on a few occasions. Besides, I had read some

earning more, saving more and consequently drive a gradual shift towards a society with larger middle-class families. But lo! the reality. These are just pleasant dreams since we are all headed towards a foreseeable chaotic future. Not a demographic dividend reward but a demographic dividend disaster. While the government should be busy framing policies to reap the benefits of the demographic dividend by investing on human capital (education, healthcare and so on), creating more employment opportunities, promote gender equality, nourish and prepare the so-called future of India, not surprisingly we see that they are more interested in building more cow shelters and buying ambulances for the same, imposing moral policing, serving diktats on what should be deemed as ‘clean and unclean’ food, privatize education so that they avoid the burden of securing free and compulsory education and the list goes on. As it is, the illiteracy rate in India is already low, when the fortunately literate and educated citizens plead for the creation of employment opportunities, we are asked to sell ‘chai and pakodas’. Let me tell you, the government is clearly using a double standard language here, while fast foods are being deemed unhealthy and discouraged, pakodas which are equally loaded with high calories (depending on what

of his writings in the local papers earlier which was undiluted mind fresheners of the highest quality. Pity his writings in the local dailies is hard to come by nowadays. I have a nagging suspicion that it is not only a symptom of the spirit being willing but the flesh weak. A thoroughly composed and consciencetickling writer and speaker, how we wish there are a few more Niketus in our midst! b) Khekiye K. SemaNot all the people all the times may agree with all of his views or, rather, how he airs his views. But generally, I applaud his no-nonsense, devil-may-care way of putting people and issues in their respective slots. Gratefully, after an apparent sabbatical for a while, there has been a near-bonanza of Khekiyeism beginning from his ‘Naga Christmas Greetings! Keep it up, Senior! c) Kahuto Chishi SemaThankfully, at least one more sharp-shooter who minces no words in calling people and matters exactly what they are. He obviously has a vast reservoir of knowledge and an admirable command over the white man’s tongue. May his tribe multiply by leaps and bounds! d) Kaka D. Iralu- Every piece bearing the name of this full-blooded Naga is an absorbing read. Rain or shine, I must read his writings because he occasionally reminds me of my Naganess! A bit of unsolicited advice, though. I hear you are no theological novice but stand cautioned-in all probality, you may find yourself in the dock sooner than later accused of being the cause of unemployment of our teeming theologians! As such, be on the safe side and concentrate on the cause of safeguarding the inalienable cause of Naga struggle for defending our birthright. Besides, keep your encyclopaedia on Naga national politics open as every Naga needs to read and be aware of the authentic history of the Naga. Because of space constraints I have been grossly unfair by only naming a few out of many Naga writers, accomplished and upcoming, who can give their counterparts beyond the Naga borders a run for their money. 2. Contractor- I frequently commute on the stretch of NH 29 between Merhülietsa junction and TCP gate in Kohima and the quality of the ongoing road

variety we prepare) are being promoted. It’s not like pakodas being sold by an engineer or a Ph.D. degree holder will have lesser calories, is it?. Amidst the loud cheering by the protesters, there were a few groups of unemployed Naga students and job aspirants who took the courage to voice their dissent on the streets of New Delhi, to remind the government of Nagaland that their future is equally bleak reaffirming the reality that awaits them at home. The demand for advertising 68 vacant assistant professor and librarians posts, to break the cycle of backdoor appointments and corruption were a synchronistic theme that their placards read. Some of which said ‘Don’t be shy, please advertise the 68 posts’, ‘MISSING. 68 asst.profs & librarians’, ‘corrupt appointment nalage’, and ‘I deserve a fair chance’. I would like to reiterate what the placards read and request the government not to shy away from advertising the 68 posts because we the Nagas tend to be demure only for all the wrong reasons. As it is, job opportunities are ‘CRITICALLY ENDANGERED’ in our state, the present state of affairs forces us to question, why do we have to spend so much on education when we are not given free and fair-medium of competition at all. The real picture of India is right before us; the employment rate published by the

National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) showed that the unemployment rate in 2017-18 was the highest since 1972-73 at 6.1%. And if I remember it correct, someone during his 2014 general election campaign requested the country to make him the ‘chowkidar’ while promising to revamp the economy of India and promote employment opportunities by creating 25 crore job over the span of 10 years, indeed, he was right, millions of Indian citizens are now holding ‘jobless job’. On the contrary, while those holding jobs are being forced to shed their jobs, thanks to their ingenious policies. The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy asserted the same when they reported that 11 million jobs were lost in 2018. But why would the government care? They are still in denial mode. NSSO reports for them are just unverified misinformation that does not hold valid grounds for argument. And I hope this denial will serve as a strong basis on which the youths of the nation deny and reject any government that has the least concern for them when they walk up to the voting booth this year and decide how the so-called future of the country wants their future to be shaped. Until then, I think the ‘future’ of this country is and will be in distress, but not for long, not for long. Chibenthung Yanthan, Research Scholar, Jawaharlal Nehru University

Little drops

construction works vouches for the acclaimed reputation of Vilelie Khamo for whom quality of work and public well-being take precedence over material profit. Equally renowned as a philanthropist, this admirable contractor had been raining Little Drops of selfless public service and succour which calls for government recognition and people’s gratitude. Salute! 3. Family/Clan- Naga Landowners everywhere will do well by taking a leaf out of the book of the Belho Family/Clan who promptly donated the area of land required for re-alignment of the highway following a major landslide in the outskirt of the Capital City despite the fact that a major business godown of the family stood dangerously close to the proposed re-aligned road. The family/clan could easily have made instant crores if they had invoked the partially off-quoted Art. 371 (A) but they did not. If this is not exemplary public service, what is ? The Belhos are no gold-diggers, I know. How worthy to be emulated! 4. NGO-ACAUT, the courageous campaigners Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation has been rendering yeoman’s service to the Naga Society by employing Little Drops of courage and pressure in quest of an unshackled and accountable dispensation. By the way, are you hibernating? 5. The Church- Jesus knew Peter would falter and err, yet He chose the Rock to be the foundation of His Church. Peter (the Church) has further been invested with the authority of binding or loosening within the ecclesiastical domain. In other words, the Church is a divine institution under the custodianship of the clergy who are prone to falter and err as human beings exposed to the machinations of Satan. Thus, inspite of certain failings and taints, the church commands the highest respect and loyalty of believers as it shepherds its flocks to the pasture of rightness .Yes, the Church has been the perennial source of Little Drops of virtue in a vicious world. . Pray we for a more participative, contributive and non-decadent Church in the pursuit of an upright social order. 6. Politicians- Politicians will be squarely blamed if some species of flowers go extinct in the near future!

For, they are the ubiquitous, if ephemeral, depositories of bouquets of the literal kind. But, let us admit it, the general public including chamchas, wannabe movers and shakers and self-styled, petty kingmakers almost never think of felicitating their leaders with bouquets of the figurative kind even when they deserve it, albeit rarely. I may be one of the odd men out but I believe in commending positivity. Accordingly, here are three of the several politicians who, in my book, have been feeding Little Drops of freshness to the political ocean of amnesia, insincerity and incompetence. a) The constituentsfriendly, refreshingly simple and reportedly easy-to-approach Neikeisalie Kire has surely made a difference. Despite being a 35+ year resident of the area which is a part of the constituency he has been representing for three consecutive terms now, I have only met and chatted with him once by chance- in a humble home at the grassroots. Apart from that, I know he came over to our home to personally share our grief over a personal loss but to my rue, I missed thanking him in person as I was attending to some chores elsewhere. Then, when he was a minister during the previous assembly tenure, a neighbour of ours once told me that he had never seen him in the colony. I suggested that he could look for the minister on such occasions and places as wedding celebrations, bereaved homes etc. at the lower class level. Another neighbour was surprised that he happened to espy someone resembling the minister chatting with some others in a spot on the way between Kohima and Dimapur but was unsure if it was actually the minister himself, as he did not see any security escorts or morethan two vehicles, that too facing different directions. Very typical , I thought. That is Nicky for you! b) He had been a respected and noted member of our neighbourhood since childhood till marriage but I doubt if we will recognise each other now-Tongpang Ozukum. Prompted by curiosity, I have been keeping track of his performance as a minister and my impression is that he is doing quite well particularly in the sincerity aspect.

ee, here is water. What doth hinder me from being baptized?” So asked the Ethiopian. Driving on our highways, should you preach and some decide to get baptized, then tarry not but baptize them on the very minute, the very spot - Alas, our roads have baptism points everywhere! No wonder, the other day someone called our roads baptism road! The march to Canaan, we learn, turned 40 days’ journey into 40 years? Well, our roads do just that - for our sins! Exodus road? Could these be the roads that the great prophet took to lead a sinning generation? The road, I’m not sure; but the sin, 100% sure! Should the envious brothers be out and Joseph come to visit - why, they won’t need no pit here they can straight throw him into that forever pothole hard by near Green Park! Did Jesus tell us to follow the narrow path? Our pothole-chewed roads are narrow indeed, couldn’t get narrower! But this is the wrong ‘narrow’, Sir. Absalom, the traitor wannabe king was caught on a tree branch trying to escape. Trees far and between here but surely he would have tripped into that famous hole we see everyday at Burma Camp i.e. before he reaches Assam and zooms to glory. Absalom holes are well positioned throughout this stretch, no traitor can reach Assam and disappear. Then comes the stubborn Pharaoh. We read locusts blinded the very sun in his kingdom once upon a time - surely it must have resembled the dust here. But pray it’s the stubbornness we are more worried here in Nagaland. How about remembering that disobedient prophet who slept while the boat rocked - that is nothing. We have learned to snore when the cars rock 90 degrees. But he was saved and we might not...at this rate! ‘Look before you leap’ so the proverb goes - The wise king probably meant this for the road at Eros lane! Where are all the men who vowed to take care of our roads? They are all with us here at Aaron’s golden calf! How our roads do remind us of so many events in the Bible, our Christianity! God have mercy on our souls! Rain Vakha, Seitheke Basa, Dimapur

A person intent to stay afloat in the sewer-fed, obnoxious and murky whirlpool called electoral politics will find it impossible to be a saint, but sincerity of purpose with the determination to deliver the goods is the basic criterion for judging a leader and the young minister is scoring high on this. To make a good leader one needs exposure and experience in the field of man-management in different situations and on various issues from the grass-roots up. It is regretful it some people publicity disparage and rebuke him for having been a student leader all the way from the bottom to the top. You may be a novice at the top echelon of electoral politics, but don’t be unduly ruffled by the gutter-level antics of some people who obviously need to learn rudimentary lessons on decency and respect to equals, but instead keep on being the source of Little Drops of freshness, sincerity and humility in the nuisatingly polluted political melieu, Son! c) Temjen Imna Along Longkumer- This will be outright outrage for a few bigots and exploiters of religions sentiments, a recreational read for the clergy and rational Christians and certainly a minor setback for political detractors including in- house rivals but I go by performance expected of leaders in different fields. I barely know T.I.A.

Longkumer, yet judging by newspaper reports and inputs from discerning and unbiased observers, he is a front-running performer in the Naga political and social horizon. Just reason with me-which other minister secured three major colleges for the state within months of becoming a minister? Which ‘antiChristian’ extended state scholarships to Christian theological students for the first time? Who is credited for obtaining additional crores to pay students their entitled but long-pending scholarships the purse of which allegedly disappeared into thin air earlier? How many wealthy individuals utilised their personal riches to help ameliorate public suffering and inadequacies in communities and villages beyond their political constituencies? There are other instances but the above suffices for me to safely say that this obviously misunderstood leader has been providing Little Drops of Succor for the Naga Aam admi and positive trends in public service. Close circles blessed to be not cursed with jaundiced minds assert that Temjen Imna Along Longkumer is a well-meaning and humble individual and a steadfast, practising and contented Christian. Hearken, Ye social media enthusiasts, rumourfed gossip medium activists and political ill-wishers, Repent. For, near is the Kingdom of truth! K.T. Imchen, Merhulietsa Kohima.

Commemorating 168th anniversary of Battle of 1851 Sir,

Since time immemorial the Nagas have been a free nation. Whenever their sovereignty and independence were threatened, they fought to defend it, as can be seen in the battle of 1851 between the Kikrüma villagers and British-led forces. This battle was fought on the 11th of February – 168 years ago to the day. The battle of Kikrüma was fought well before the first massive Indian uprising against colonial rule, which ensued in 1857. Therefore, any reference that is made to the Nagas and its political history should engage with the Battle of Kikrüma. This battle, after all, was fought when Nagas were still free and independent, while subsequent and other significant political developments such as the formation of the Naga Club, its memorandum to the Simon Commission, and the Naga plebiscite took place after the Nagas and their land were forcibly occupied by the British and Indians respectively. In this connection, CPO has appealed to all citizens to extend their support for the success of the bandh.

MUMBAI, FEB 9 (AGENCIES): Country’s foreign exchange (forex) reserves has again crossed the $400 billion-mark after a period of around five months.”Reserves crossing the $400 billion-mark after 5 months is an indication that RBI is building up the reserves. It seems they are buying US dollars to augment reserves,” Anindya Baner jee, Deputy Vice President for Currency and Interest Rates with Kotak Securities, told IANS. “Till recently, the RBI was engaged in defending

the rupee and arresting the currency’s fall.” According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s weekly statistical supplement released on Friday, the reserves rose $2.06 billion during the week ended February 1. The overall forex reserves increased to $400.24 billion from $398.17 billion reported for the week ended January 25. Country’s forex reserves comprise Foreign Currency Assets (FCAs), gold reser ves, Special Drawing Rights (SDRs)

and India’s position with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). On a weekly basis, FCAs, the largest component of the forex reserves, edged higher by $1.28 billion to $373.43 billion during the week ended February 1. Besides the US dollar, FCAs consist of 20-30 per cent of other major global currencies. The RBI’s weekly data showed that the value of the country’s gold reserves rose by $764.9 million to $22.68 billion.

(From p-1) EC said it would be open to a person to give up a membership of a party at any point of time. “This would mean that such a member can join another party or re-enter the earlier party, subject of course, to the conditions that may be specified by the party concerned regarding membership,” it stated. In the absence of evidence to show that the members in question were also members of NPF, EC said that the commission does not see any basis to accept the contention about false affidavits. With regard to allegations that government officials were also part of the respondent party (NDPP), EC asserted that this cannot be a ground for cancellation of registration. “If at all, such allegation could be a matter of departmental action against the official, if their conduct violates service rule,” it added. In view of the “factual and legal position brought out”, the commission held that the case for cancellation of registration of NDPP is not made out. Consequently, other reliefs for cancellation of recognition also does not survive, said EC, adding that the complaint is dismissed. Meanwhile, it was learnt that the matter would now be taken up to a Higher Court by the complainant. However, Loucü could not be contacted till the time of filing this report.

(From p-1) “21 years of negotiation without solution is unreasonable. This position has pushed our people to pay taxes to 11governments,” he said. Besides lack of investment and development, Therie highlighted that unemployment was a major concern, which has driven youth in search of jobs outside the state. “This has taken an unexpected toll on our youth with many stories ending in sadness,” he added. Therie said the party leaders unanimously demanded for restoration of special category state status in view of bottle neck connectivity and continued internal disturbances. The leaders from NE also urged that NEC and DoNER ministry be given autonomy in the Central government making them full fledged departments. In view of opposition to CAB by regional political parties and the for the coming Lok Sabha polls, Therie said re-alignment with likeminded political parties was also suggested in line with the strategy to bring all like-minded political parties, groups and societies to fight the communal BJP.

RBI rate cut, FII inflows boost equity indices MUMBAI, FEB 9 (IANS): The easing of monetary policy, combined with healthy foreign fund inflows, boosted investors’ sentiments to lift the key equity indices around 1 per cent during the last trading week. Additionally, positive vibes from announcements like the farm package and enhancement of tax rebate limit, made in the interim Budget, and some healthy quarterly results gave the upward thrust to the market. However, a sharp sell-off towards the end of the week triggered by stock-specific volatility and rupee depreciation capped the gains. Consequently, the S&P BSE Sensex rose 289.79 points, 0.8 per cent, over the week to end at 36,546.48 points. The broader NSE Nifty50 finished at 10,943.60, up 1 per cent or 112.65 points from its previous week’s close. In a surprise move that could bring down home and auto loans, the RBI went the whole hog by not only lowering its key lending rate by 25 basis

when it shared the excessive cost of sterilisation so that the central bank balance sheet remains strong and reserves get added. “There is merit in keeping at least the central bank’s balance sheet strong if the government’s fiscal balance sheet is weak,” Reddy said. The government expects Rs 28,000 crore as interim from the RBI and the finance minister recently said he expected another about an equal amount from past reserves as well. In 2015, the government decided that the RBI holds more reserves than required and the entire money, therefore, should be transferred. The chief economic adviser had already advocated that the excess money should be used to recpaitalise banks. “There is no doubt that in the ultimate analysis, the

points (bps) to 6.25 per cent, but also turned accommodative, changing its monetary policy stance from “calibrated tightening” to “neutral”, even as industry hailed the decision. A policy rate cut would lead to lower interest rates for loan seekers and hence lift demand in the market. “RBI’s monetary policy was in line with expectation with a change in stance to neutral, but rate cut was a surprise,” said Geojit Financial Services’ Head of Research Vinod Nair. “Benign inflation outlook and possibility of further ease in key rates will help to revive credit growth which is positive Okusa Automobiles Pvt Limited distributed road safety pamphlets and put up a for rate sensitive stocks,” Nair road safety banner on Saturday, at Nyamo Lotha road junction, in observance of said. to reply to the Budget debate in Parliament will depend on when his doctors allow him to leave. “It depends on my treatment here, which is all over. I am on the recovery course. It’s when my doctors allow me to go back. As of present, as I understand, Piyush Goyal will be replying (to the Budget debate in Parliament),” he said. The Budget session of Parliament ends on February 13, and debate on the Interim Budget has been taken up in the Lok Sabha. This was his first overseas visit after he underwent renal transplant surgery on May 14, 2018, at AIIMS.

government as the owner has a claim over the reserves, but the way it exercises gives signals to the market and influences public opinion,” he said. There is also the issue of “constitutional propriety” of using the reserves directly to fund capital of the banks instead of crediting it to Consolidated Fund of India. The proposal to invoke Section 7 of the RBI Act, which is used by the government to direct the RBI what to do, was an “unprecedented move”, which, in many ways, raised “fundamental questions on governance,” Reddy said. The invocation of the Act “virtually meant that the channels of normal communication for reaching agreed position between government and governor RBI had broken down”, and which ultimately culminated in Urjit Patel’s resignation from the post of RBI governor. The Centre’s demands of relaxing prompt corrective action rules for banks dilutes “both the autonomy and accountability of RBI”, Reddy said. Reddy was also against government’s demand to dilute Basel III norms, which are perceived to be more stringent in India than the global norms.

MUMBAI, FEB 9 (AGENCIES): Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Y V Reddy sharply criticised the government for intervening in the central bank’s affairs and asking money from the past reserves. In a speech delivered at Pune on Friday, Reddy, who was also chairman of the 14th Finance Commission, endorsed critics stating that the “automatic monetisation of pre-reform period” is being replaced with “coercive monetisation of fiscal needs”. In the Kale Memorial Lecture, delivered at Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Reddy said that by taking recourse to unprecedented practice of interim dividend, the government has compromised on the established mechanism of “ways and means”, a temporary loan facility extended to the government by the RBI. The reserves act as insurance for the future, and needed to be fortified, instead of taken away. “The immediate fiscal needs seem to take precedence over a renewed assessment of the capital needs of RBI,” Reddy said. This is contrary to what the government did in 2013

GENEVA, FEB 9 (IANS): The UN refugee agency has called on Bangladeshi authorities “to continue to allow” into the country people fleeing ongoing violence in Myanmar amid the deteriorating security situation there. The UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) issued the statement on Friday amid its concern about the humanitarian impact of continuing violence in southern Chin State and Rakhine State in Myanmar, bdnews24.com reported. UNHCR spokesperson Andrej Mahecic in Geneva said it was aware of reports of escalating violence and a deteriorating security situation in Myanmar’s states. “This has reportedly led to internal displacement and a number of new arrivals from Myanmar seeking safety in the Bandarban border region of Bangladesh. “The UNHCR is deeply concerned about the humanitarian impact of continuing violence in Myanmar and the potential for both further internal displacement and the outflow of refugees,” Mahecic said.

In a statement, the State Department said talks during Stephen Biegun’s three-day trip explored Trump and Kim’s “commitments of complete denuclearization, transforming US-DPRK relations and building a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.” Biegun landed at Osan US Air Base late Friday, foreign ministry

spokesman Noh Kyu-duk told AFP. The State Department confirmed Biegun agreed to meet his North Korean counterpart Kim Hyok Chol again before the leaders’ talks. North Korea has yet to provide any official confirmation of the summit and Kim Jong Un appeared to make no mention of it during a meeting earlier with the top brass of the Korean People’s Army. As reported by state media, the meeting focused on the need to modernize the military while maintaining party discipline in the ranks. CARACAS, FEB 9 (IANS): Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro slammed the European Union (EU)backed International Contact Group on Venezuela, but said he would be prepared to meet its representatives, while self-proclaimed interim head of state Juan Guaido said his supporters were ready to create a humanitarian corridor if the incumbent blocks international aid. “I’m ready and willing to receive any envoy from the contact group,” Maduro told a press conference on Friday at the presidential palace, though he rejected the “partisan, ideological” lens through which its members view the oil-rich nation, reports Efe news. The contact group, which seeks a solution to Venezuela’s political and economic crisis through dialogue and new presidential elections, includes Germany, the UK, Spain and France, and a handful of Latin American countries such as Uruguay, Ecuador and Costa Rica. Mexico participated at the group’s inaugural meeting on Thursday in Montevideo, but did not sign a statement calling for new presidential elections in Venezuela. Leftist-led Bolivia also refused to support snap presidential elections in Venezuela. The US, Canada, numerous Latin American countries and

the major European powers all consider Maduro’s May 2018 re-election victory to be tainted by fraud and have recognised Guaido, the speaker of the oppositioncontrolled National Assembly, as Interim President. Guaido, speaking on Friday at the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas, said that if Maduro continues to prevent the entry of a shipment of humanitarian aid from the neighbouring Colombia, the opposition would mobilise to create a corridor so the assistance could reach Venezuelans in need. His pledge followed comments by the US Ambassador to Colombia urging the Venezuelan military to allow the aid to enter the country. Venezuelan armed forces officers and troops have the opportunity to participate in a humanitarian campaign that would help alleviate severe problems in their country, which is suffering from widespread

shortages of food and medicine and hyperinflation, Kevin Whitaker said in the Colombian border city of Cucuta. Maduro has thus far used the military to block the aid from entering Venezuela, denying that the country is suffering a humanitarian crisis and saying the delivery of the shipments would be a prelude to a US-led military intervention. US President Donald Trump has imposed severe sanctions on Venezuela’s oil industry and was the first recognise Guaido as Interim President within hours of his January 23 proclamation. Trump said last month that “all options are on the table” in dealing with Maduro. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador reiterated on Friday that the only path to a solution of the crisis in Venezuela is dialogue between the government and opposition.

Thailand princess bid for PM scuttled Pakistan govt rejects Sharifs’ pleas BANGKOK, FEB 9 (AFP): Thai Princess Ubolratana’s unprecedented attempt to become the country’s next prime minister was abruptly nixed Saturday after her party agreed to comply with a command from the king opposing the plan. The party’s announcement effectively blocking Ubolratana’s candidacy came after an extraordinary rebuke by her brother King Maha Vajiralongkorn, and removes a hurdle for the ruling junta to hold onto power after the March 24 vote -- the first since a 2014 coup. The Thai Raksa Chart party, affiliated with the powerful Shinawatra political clan, had announced the princess as their candidate Friday morning. The move rattled the status quo and threatened the ambitions of the generals who have controlled Thailand since they toppled the administration of Yingluck Shinawatra almost five years ago. But the Thai king torpedoed his sister’s bid in a sharply worded statement the same day that said bringing senior royal family members into politics

was against tradition and “highly inappropriate”. Thai Raksa Chart responded swiftly, cancelling a campaign event Saturday and issuing a statement saying it “complies with the royal command”. Thailand has some of the most severe lese majeste laws in the world and the king’s word is seldom challenged. Royalist Thais and celebrities praised the intervention on social media after the order, writing “long live the king”. Others expressed unhappiness with groups such as Thai Raksa Chart linked to Yingluck and her brother Thaksin, who was ousted in a 2006 coup. An activist who called himself Champ 1984 said he was “disappointed” with

China ‘firmly opposes’ PM Modi’s Arunachal Pradesh visit

BEIJING, FEB 9 (PTI): China on Saturday “firmly opposed” Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh, asserting that it has never recognised the sensitive border state and the Indian leadership should refrain from any action that may “complicate the boundary question”. Prime Minister Modi Saturday inaugurated and laid foundation stone of projects in Ar unachal Pradesh worth over Rs 4,000 crore and said his government was giving a lot of importance to improve connectivity in the border state. Modi said his government was giving importance to improve the highway, railway, airway and power situation in Arunachal Pradesh, which was neglected by the previous governments. In New Delhi, Min-

ADDIS ABABA, FEB 9 (IANS): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres here on Saturday called for more coordinated efforts to fight climate change. “The inter national community needs more political will to undertake climate change mitigation, adaptation and climate finance activities,” Guterres was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency. “We are losing the race for climate change, which could be a disaster for Africa and the world. Africa will pay even higher price because of the dramatic impact in the continent even though Africa doesn’t contribute much to the warming of the planet,” the UN chief told a press conference on the sidelines of the 32nd ordinary session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU). Guterres said the UN was undertaking activities to raise awareness of the international community to do more in addressing challenges of climate change, despite inadequate attention given to the threat. The UN chief also praised African countries for hosting fellow African refugees despite limited domestic resources. On Friday, the AU said Africa was home to over one third of the global population of displaced people.

istry of External Affairs reacted sharply to China’s remarks, saying the state of Arunachal Pradesh is an “integral and inalienable part” of India. “Indian leaders visit Arunachal Pradesh from time to time, as they visit other parts of India. This consistent position has been conveyed to the Chinese side on several occasions,” the MEA spokesperson said in a statement. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying in response to a question on Modi’s visit said, “China’s position on the China-India boundary question is consistent and clear-cut. The Chinese government has never recognised the so-called ‘Arunachal Pradesh’ and is firmly opposed to the Indian leader’s visit to the East Section of the China-India boundary.”

“China urges the Indian side to bear in mind the common interests of the two countries, respect the interests and concerns of the Chinese side, cherish the momentum of improvement in bilateral relations, and refrain from any action that may lead to the escalation of disputes or complicate the boundary question,” she said in her reaction posted on the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s website. China claims the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh as part of southern Tibet. India and China have so far held 21 rounds of talks to resolve the border dispute. The India-China border dispute covers 3,488-kmlong Line of Actual Control (LAC). China routinely objects to Indian leaders visiting Arunachal Pradesh to highlight its stand.

the idea of a pro-democracy party enlisting a royal family member and would now vote for a different party. Analysts say the events of the past day will help the military to consolidate power and tilt the odds in favour of junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha. Prayut is standing as premier for the Phalang Pracharat party, a group aligned with the regime. The military has “gained the upper hand”, said professor Anusorn Unno from Thammasat University, adding that it is poised to perform well in the vote. E ve n b e f o r e T h a i Raksa Chart’s reversal, many warned the palace statement had ended the princess’ chances. “The palace disap-

proval invalidates her candidacy,” said Puangthong Pawakapan, professor of political science at Chulalongkorn University. An Election Commission official said it is reviewing all candidate applications and will finish the process this week, though few expect it to divert from the royal order. Historian Chris Baker said that while he could not predict what would happen next, the language in the palace statement was strong and “very firm”. Thailand is a constitutional monarchy and has not had a royal run for frontline office since 1932. The 67-year-old princess has yet to address the rebuke head on. She thanked supporters Saturday on her widely followed Instagram account, saying vaguely that she wanted Thailand to “move forward”. The king did not criticise the princess directly and seemed to focus blame on political party members who brought her on board. Both Yingluck and Thaksin live in self-exile to avoid charges which they say are politically motivated.

for removal of names from EC List

ISLAMABAD, FEB 9 (IANS): Pakistan’s Interior Ministry on Saturday rejected pleas of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Muhammad Safdar seeking removal of their names from the Exit Control List (ECL). In October last year, Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law had separately written letters to the ministry stating that Rule 2 of Exit From Pakistan Rules 2010 did not apply to them as they “were not involved in corruption, misuse of authority, terrorism or any conspiracy”

and thus their names should be removed from ECL. According to the News International, all the three were informed about the rejection of their applications. The report cited anti-corruption body’s sources as saying that now all the three had no other option but to approach the court for the sake of removing their names from ECL. The decision to place the names of the former Premier, his daughter and sonin-law was taken during the first federal Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan on August 20, 2018.

WASHINGTON, FEB 9 (AFP): US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will meet for a second much-anticipated summit in Hanoi, as preparations kick into high gear for the peace talks. Trump announced the exact location on Twitter -only the country, Vietnam, was previously known -- for the follow-on to the leaders’ summit in Singapore last year as he hailed “very productive” preparatory talks between diplomats from the two countries. “My representatives have just left North Korea after a very productive meeting and an agreed upon time and date for the second Summit with Kim Jong Un,” Trump said. “It will take place in

Minister Kang Kyung-wha on Saturday. Attention will focus on whether the US team have offered to lift some economic sanctions in return for Pyongyang taking concrete steps toward denuclearization. Discussions on declaring an end to the 1950-53 Korean War could also have been on the table, with Biegun last week saying Trump was “ready to end this war.” The three-year conflict ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty, leaving the two Koreas still technically at war, with the US keeping 28,500 troops in the South. The US envoy was also likely to have discussed with his counterpart protocol and security matters for the upcoming Trump-Kim summit. At their landmark summit in Singapore last year, the mercurial US and North Korean leaders produced a vaguely worded document in which Kim pledged to work towards “the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.” But progress has since stalled, with the two sides disagreeing over what that means. Experts say tangible progress on Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons will be needed for the second summit if it is to avoid being dismissed as “reality TV.”

O

reo the raccoon, the real-life model for Guardians of the Galaxy character Rocket, has died aged 10. The news was announced on the comic book superhero team’s Facebook page. “Oreo passed away in the early hours of this morning after a very short illness,” it reads. “Many thanks to our wonderful vets for their compassion and care.” Rocket the raccoon was voiced by Bradley Cooper in the 2014 film and its 2017 sequel.

Oreo died after a short illness early on Thursday morning, the Facebook post says. “You have been an amazing ambassador for raccoons everywhere,” it reads. “You were perfect.” Oreo accompanied the film’s director, James Gunn to the Guardians of the Galaxy premiere. Disney fired Gunn as director of the planned third Guardians film over offensive social media posts - but the cast backed him and he is reportedly working on another superhero film script.

The character Rocket first appeared in a 1976 Marvel comic book, and was named after The Beatles song Rocky Raccoon. Cooper also voiced the role in the Avengers: Infinity War film and its upcoming sequel, Avengers: Endgame. Actor Sean Gunn brother of James - provided the motion capture performance for the character, while Rocket’s physical characteristics in the films are based on Oreo’s. Tributes poured in for the raccoon on social media. (BBC)

discuss human lunar landers,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine wrote in an op-ed at news site OZY. com on Friday. The US space agency is planning to test new human-class landers on the moon, beginning 2024, with the goal of sending a crew to it 2028. Through multi-phased lunar exploration partnerships, NASA is asking American companies to study the best approach to

landing astronauts on the moon and start the development as quickly as possible with current and future anticipated technologies. “Building on our model in low-Earth orbit, we’ll expand our partnerships with industry and other nations to explore the moon and advance our missions to farther destinations such as Mars, with America leading the way,” Bridenstine said in a statement. “T

itanic” produced so many iconic scenes and lines, but there was one particularly memorable moment in the 1997 blockbuster that star Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t thrilled about. In a new interview with BBC’s “Movies That Made Me,” James Cameron opens up about DiCaprio’s memorable “I’m the king of the world,” line, which the director went on to shout in

cringing fashion at the 1998 Oscars. “The way he sells it, yes. Apparently, that’s the difference between myself and Leonardo, he was able to sell the line,” Cameron teases, referencing the backlash he got for quoting his own film while accepting the Oscar. The real story is that this wasn’t the original line

that was set for the scene when DiCaprio’s Jack and his pal, Fabrizio (Danny Nucci), are at the bow of the Titanic cruise liner.

“It was made up on the spot. I was in a crane basket, and we were losing the light. I had tried this and we had tried that, tried this line and that line and it was just coming up snake eyes,” Cameron reveals. “And I said, ‘Alright, I’ve got one for you. Just say, ‘I’m the king of the world,’ and just spread your arms out wide and just be in the

moment and just love it and just celebrate it and love it.’ And he goes, ‘What?’” Cameron conveys that DiCaprio wasn’t exactly enthusiastic about the improvised line, noting, “I’m getting this over the walkie talkie. ‘I’m the king of the world,’ just say, ‘I’m the king of the world,’ but you’ve got to sell it!’ And he goes, ‘What?!’ I said, ‘Just sell it.’” (FoxNews)

India look to clinch first-ever T20 series in NZ

H a m i lt o n, F e b 9 (IANS): The Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, will be aiming to become the first side to win a T20 International series in New Zealand when the two sides clash in the final match here on Sunday. It has been a season of records for the Men in Blue who won its first Test and bilateral ODI series in Australia followed by the biggest one-day series win in New Zealand. The T20 series is now locked at 1-1 with the hosts winning the first one convincingly and India returning the favour in style in the last game. India had a nightmare in the same venue during the fourth ODI where they were skittled out for 92 in the wake of some quality swing bowling from Trent Boult. India are expected to remain unchanged from the first two games. In the first T20, Kiwis’ Tim Seifert gave the Indian bowlers a hard time but they came back strongly in the

second tie. Krunal Pandya has once again punched above his weight with some gritty performances in the two games. Khaleel Ahmed also took wickets and would look to fire again on Sunday. Skipper Rohit led with the bat in the game and became the world’s top run-getter in T20 Internationals. India’s middleorder has also shown solidity with the experience of M.S. Dhoni and the exuberance of Rishabh Pant combining well as was evident in Auckland. For the hosts, they would look to draw inspiration from

Yuvraj Singh

MUMBAI, FEB 9 (IANS): Veteran all-rounder Yuvraj Singh believes former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s guidance will be crucial to India’s chances at the ODI World Cup this year. “I think Mahi (Dhoni) has a great cricketing brain. As a wicket-keeper, you are in the best position to monitor the game and he has done that fantastically over the years. He has been a great captain. (He’s) with the young players and guiding Virat (Kohli) all the time,” Yuvraj was quoted as saying by icc-cricket. com. “I feel his presence is very important in the decision-making. He had a fantastic tournament in Australia, and it is good to see him hit the ball they way he used to do. I wish him all the best,” he said. Dhoni is one of the most successful captains in Indian cricket, winning the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007. Apart from his skills with the bat and as keeping gloves, Dhoni is also valued in the Indian team due to his ability to guide bowlers in crucial situations. He has been facing criticism from some quarters recently due to his slow scoring rate. Dhoni, however, replied to his critics string of excellent performances during the limited-overs series in Australia and New Zealand. Yuvraj also praised rookie batsman Shubman Gill who recently made his international debut during the One-day International (ODI) series in New Zealand. “I was excited to see him (Shubman) play for India,” he said. “It is amazing, how he has improved so much. He came back from the (India) A tour, scored lot of runs in the domestic cricket, straightaway got an opportunity.”

Chennaiyin beat BFC 2-1 in ISL

Jeje Lalpekhlua celebrates after scoring a goal during the ISL match against Bengaluru FC at Marina Arena, Chennai on Saturday.

CHENNAI, FEB 9 (AGENCIES): League leaders Bengaluru were handed a jolt as they succumbed to a 1-2 defeat against defending champions Chennaiyin in the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Marina Arena/ Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Saturday. Jeje Lalpekhlua (32’) scored an ISL goal after 330 days and Gregory Nelson (42’) doubled the Super Machan’s lead in the first half. Sunil Chhetri (57’) halved the deficit in the second half. Jeje captained Chennaiyin in only his seventh start of the season and Chris Herd made his full debut. Carles Cuadrat opted for five changes with the likes

of Albert Serran, Dimas Delgado and Udanta Singh were all rested from the matchday squad. Miku was reunited with Sunil Chhetri up top while new signing Luisma Villa was seen on Indian shores for the very first time. Luisma and Miku combined well in the first half hour as the Venezuelan had two sniffs on goal, both of which he missed. Zotea Ralte was forced out of the game early after former teammate Miku stamped on his ankle. That pushed Chris Herd into the defence and Anirudh Thapa’s introduction helped the hosts going forward. Two minutes after the half-hour mark, Harmanjot Khabra failed to

track Raphael Augusto’s run on the counter and laid the ball for CK Vineeth on the edge of the box. The on-loan striker from Kerala Blasters squared the ball, one which Nishu Kumar failed to intercept, and an opportune Jeje slammed the ball home after it took a deflection off Gurpreet’s gloves and the inside of the crossbar. Thereafter, Chennaiyin had a spring in their step in all their forays into the Bengaluru final third and that paid off in style. Vineeth fed an overlapping Laldinliana Renthlei who sent in a pinpoint cross towards the far side. Nelson rose over an unassuming Rino Anto and headed home into the bottom corner.

Luisma’s ISL debut was cut short as Cuadrat sent in Kean Lewis to shuffle things up after the break. Bengaluru showed a hint of urgency and a goal did come through Sunil Chhetri, who equalled Iain Hume’s goals tally of 28 in the ISL, just one behind all-time topscorer Ferran Corominas. It was a sustained bit of pressure from the visitors that yielded a goal. Khabra passed to Xisco who played a cross into space. Chhetri was played onside by Herd and he timed his run to perfection diving and headed the ball home past a hapless Karanjit Singh. Chennaiyin committed men back to protect their lead for the rest of their game, absorbing the pressure from Miku and Chhetri. However, the only attempt on goal remained a 30-yarded from Khabra that sailed above the bar. Cuadrat throwed in youngsters Edmund Lalrindika and Ajay Chhetri towards the fag end of the game, the latter making his senior professional debut. However, both got booked, mirroring their side’s frustration as they dropped points in consecutive games. With three rounds remaining, bottom-placed Chennaiyin FC got upto eight points, while Bengaluru remained on 31 points, failing to open up a sevenpoint lead at the top of the table.

I-League: Churchill Brothers, Mohun Bagan play out 1-1 draw VASCO GOA, FEB 9 (AGENCIES): Panaji Churchill Brothers and Mohun Bagan played out a 1-1 draw on Saturday at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Goa. Aser Dipanda’s 39thminute strike pulled the visitors ahead but Anthony Wolfe (78’) restored parity for the hosts in the second half. Churchill Brothers coach Petr Gigiu made t h r e e c h a n ge s t o h i s side that lost 3-2 against Shillong Lajong. Khalid Aucho returned from injury alongside Nenad Novakovik to replace Rowilson Rodrigues and Nicholas Fernandes while Vigneshwaran Baskaran stepped in for James Kithan in between the sticks. On the other hand, Mohun Bagan’s Khalid Jamil rang in four changes. In came Mehtab Hossain, Bikramjit Singh, Abinash Ruidas and Amey Ranawade in place of Shilton D’Silva, Lalchhawnkima, Azharuddin Mallick and Arijit Bagui. The visitors had an early opportunity as Baskaran blocked Dipanda’s shot from close range but the ball fell to Norde who shot wide in the third minute. For the hosts, Hussein Eldor got closest to scoring a goal in the 17th minute when his free-kick had goal-

keeper Shilton Paul beaten but the framework came to his rescue and the ball rattled off the woodwork. The hosts were then jolted by two quick injuries to Richard Costa and Eldor before a defensive lapse by the latter’s replacement in Rowilson handed Bagan the opener. Dipanda was at hand to take advantage and slot the ball past Baskaran after the ball was headed towards him by Henry Kisekka. Wayne Vaz put in a

timely intervention to prevent Norde from receiving a cross from Dipanda from the right in the 53rd minute while Plaza was outfoxed by by Bikramjit Singh and Eze Kingsley at the edge of the Bagan box a few minutes later. Just as Mohun Bagan looked like they would seal a win, Eze Kingsley fouled Anthony Wolfe inside the box and the Trinidadian striker converted from 12 yards in the 78th minute to rescue a point for his side.

Atletico Madrid coach praises Modric Man Utd beats Fulham; move into PL’s top 4

Luka Modric

MADRID, FEB 9 (IANS): Atletico Madrid’s head coach Diego Simeone has praised Real Madrid and its Croatia midfielder Luka Modric ahead of a La Liga derby game that pits the bitter cross-town rivals against each other. Simeone made these remarks during a press conference ahead of their Saturday’s home game that will see both teams fight for the second spot in Spain’s top tier league standings, which Atletico currently holds with a two-point lead over its powerhouse rival, reports Efe. “Modric is still the most decisive player at Real Madrid,” Simeone said on Friday, stressing the

improvement Madrid has made since the arrival of his fellow Argentinian coach Santiago Solari. Halfway through the first half of the season, Madrid was at a lowly ninth spot in La Liga’s table after their heavy 1-5 defeat to Barcelona that cost then coach Julen Lopetegui his post. But under Solari, Madrid has worked its way back into the top five and is now third with 42 points, but it trails leader Barcelona by eight points after 22 matches into the season. Simeone also stressed the de pth Madrid has gained under Solari, with players such as forward Vinicius of Brazil and Spanish

winger Lucas Vazquez, who opened the scoring during Madrid’s 1-1 draw against nemesis Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal also referred to as a Clasico. The good state of form that France forward Karim Benzema has been experiencing did not go unnoticed by Simeone, who said the French international has been going through a “fantastic moment”. Benzema found the back of the net three times over the most recent two league games - scoring twice in Madrid’s 4-2 win over Espanyol and opening the scoring in their 3-0 win over Alaves, while he assisted on their lone goal in the 1-1 draw against Barcelona. Atletico could face one of its former players, should Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois play. He joined Madrid after a fouryear spell at the cross-town rival. “Courtois is a great goalkeeper and when he was with us, he did a really good job and now he has been experiencing a good moment as he has proved at all the teams he has been in,” Simeone said.

LONDON, FEB 9 (AGENCIES): Manchester United moved into the Premier League’s top four by beating Fulham 3-0 at Craven Cottage on Saturday, with Paul Pogba scoring two more goals to continue his resurgence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Pogba gave United the lead with a blistering shot from a tight angle in the 14th minute and converted a penalty for the third goal in the 65th, taking his tally to eight goals in his last eight league games under Solskjaer. The Norwegian manager has now steered the club to eight wins in nine league games since taking over from the fired Jose Mourinho in December. United was 11 points from fourth place at the time, but suddenly looks like a real contender for a Champions League spot. Anthony Martial also scored for United, which moved provisionally into fourth, one point above Chelsea ahead of the London team’s trip to Manchester City on Sunday, while relegation-threatened Fulham remained 19th. “That’s what we want-

ed since Ole came. We talked about this, we want to be at the top, top four,” Pogba said. “There is still a long way to go but we are there and we want to stay there now.” Solksjaer took a bit of a risk by making six changes to his team for this game, with one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League home game against Paris SaintGermain, and Fulham looked like it would cause the visitors plenty of problems when it created two good early chances. But Luciano Vietto wasted the first opportunity less than a minute into the game when he fired wide after Andre Schuerrle picked him out with a cross at the far post. Schuerrle himself then fired over the bar from eight yards out three minutes later after Aleksandar Mitrovic couldn’t get his header on target. It was all United after that. The opening goal came when Martial picked out Pogba’s run into the area and the France midfielder smashed a left-footed shot inside the near post, beating goalkeeper Sergio

Rico who seemed to expect a cross. Martial doubled the lead nine minutes later with a solo effort after Mitrovic was caught in possession, streaming forward and shaking off two defenders before slotting a shot inside the far post. Fulham never looked likely to recover and Pogba removed any doubts about the outcome with a

well-placed spot kick after Maxime Le Marchand bundled into Juan Mata from behind. “He is playing to his potential,” Solskjaer said about Pogba. “We are trying to make a better team and put players in a position where we can hurt teams. We know Paul, with his physicality, energy and strength, is going to be a problem for anyone. I

speak to him like I speak to the other players. It is about getting the best out of everyone but he is definitely responding to the way we do things now.” Substitute Alexis Sanchez had a chance to score a fourth when he intercepted a poor header from Le Marchand and came clear through on goal, but Rico made a reflex save with his left hand.

BHUBANESHWAR, FEB 9 (AGENCIES): India edged past Iran 1-0 to get their 2019 Gold Cup campaign off to a winning start on Saturday at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar. Iran’s attempts to break down a resilient Indian backline did not bear fruit and a 48th minute Anju Tamang goal was enough for the hosts to start with a win. Maryam Azmoun’s were intent on passing the ball around right from the off but Aditi Chauhan had very little to do in goal in the opening exchanges between the teams. While the visitors were restricted to long-range efforts for the entirety of the first half, India went close as early as the second minute. Dangmei Grace intercepted Fatemeh’s pass to her centre-back partner ran straight at the goal.

The Iran goalkeeper Zahra Khajavi pulled off a good one-handed save to parry Grace’s shot away. An intense battle ensued in midfield as both teams struggled to keep the ball for long periods. Dangmei threatened again in the 30th minute, this time with a deep cross into the box that put the Iran keeper

in a spot of bother as she tracked back to collect the ball. Ratanbala Devi surged in to get to the ball first but failed to beat the last line of defence. Iran’s influence grew as the half wore on. Zahra Alishah picked out Sara Ghomimarzdashti’s run in behind the defence with a lofted through-ball.
