PM slams Opposition for Lok Sabha walkout
NEW DELHI, FEB 10 (PTI): In a sharp dig at the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said its Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha units move in opposite directions, and asserted that such a “divided” and “confused” party can neither do any good for itself nor can it think of any solutions for the country’s problems. PM Modi’s remarks came amid a walkout by members of the Congress in Lok Sabha, including former party chief Rahul Gandhi, when he was speaking on the three farm laws during his reply to the debate on the motion of thanks to the President for his address. “The condition of the Congress party, a very old party which ruled the country for about six decades, has now become such that its Rajya Sabha unit moves

The Congress is also there in Rajya Sabha, their senior leaders are there, they debate with a lot of enthusiasm and express their views. On the other hand, there is the other section of the
Congress (in Lok Sabha).... Time will tell,” the prime minister said. Before the Congress walked out, the prime minister also had an exchange with the opposition party’s leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury when he interrupted the PM’s speech repeatedly. In a statement, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, which is spearheading the protest, also said toll collection will not be allowed in Rajasthan from February 12 as part of their week-long protest strategy. The SKM said in the statement that in a meeting on Wednesday farmer unions decided to escalate their agitation. “ T h e r e will be a ‘rail roko’ programme across the country from 12 pm to 4 pm on February 18,” the SKM said.
Earlier this month, the farmers had observed a three-hour road blockade to press their demand of repealing the three laws. SKM leader Darshan Pal said candle marches, ‘Mashaal Juloos’ (torch marches) and other programmes will be held across the country on February 14 in respect of the sacrifices of the 40 CRPF personnel who killed in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama on February 14, 2019.
He said the farmers also will hold events in a show of solidarity on the birth anniversary of Sir Chhotu Ram -- who was one of the most prominent pre-partition farmer leaders -- on February 16. The announcements by the protesting unions comes on a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the government and Parliament have great respect for farmers who are voicing their views on the three farm laws.
CPO demands ‘immediate and secure’ opening of NH-29 stretch DIMAPUR, FEB 10 (NPN): Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO) Wednesday expressed dismay over closure of the NH-29 stretch between Chathe Bridge (Patkai Junction) and “Khuokhidolong” and appealed to the district administration to “immediately and securely open” the road for the public “before the public completely loses its patience.” In a press release, CPO president Vichütuolie Mere and general secretary Mhiesisato Vüprü said they have time and again written to the NHIDCL for proper surveillance on the works of the contractors at the said location of NH 29. However, CPO said that NHIDCL did not take public outcry into serious consideration. Asserting that rockslide/landslides caused by the construction company
was “never a natural disaster”, CPO said the company cannot blame the landscape or the formation of soil or rocks in the whole stretch of the highway. “Knowing all these they have accepted the works on agreement,” CPO said and added that the company was, therefore, supposed to employ qualified and experienced engineers to handle the job and also to have sufficient machineries for the work. It also said that company was bound to provide safe passage to the commuters at any cause. Unless it was a natural disaster, CPO said the company has no right to close the road because of their mishandling of the work. “If the contractors are creating any mishap to the commuters, then the authorities should take action against them as per the law, instead
KOHIMA, FEB 10 (NPN): The State Capital- Kohima is facing severe mobile network coverage problem due to shortage of mobile towers. While network providers are ready to provide good internet connectivity to its customers, the hindrance allegedly caused by few local panchayat bodies has turned out to be the biggest obstacle in enabling the city to be on a par with other cities of the country in terms of network coverage. Talking to Nagaland Post, a senior telecom official, who chose to remain
anonymous, said even when they get clearance from the district administration to set up a tower under Kohima Municipal Council jurisdiction, local panchayat bodies allegedly refuse to issue no objection certificate (NOC) for the purpose, thus creating a dead-end for the service providers. Citing radiation emitted by towers as the main reason, the local bodies refuse to issue NOCs, disclosed the official who heads one of the leading network providers in the town. He claimed that telecom department regular monitored radiation levels of each
and every tower in the city to ensure that none of the towers functioned above the permissible limit set by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the highest governing body for network providers. “Hilly places like Kohima require more towers owing to the terrain. Because, even a small hillock, a big building or a forest area can obstruct the network path and therefore we have to construct more towers to compensate in such cases,” the official explained. A normal mobile tower can cater to the need of around 2,000 users while a mini tower can provide good

NTTU flays ‘resumption of taxation’ at check gates by govt agencies DIMAPUR, FEB 10 (NPN): Nagaland Timber Traders’ Union (NTTU) has expressed shock over the “resumption of illegal taxation” allegedly by police and forest department personnel at check gates despite the state government having ordered removal of interdistrict check gates. In a press release, NTTU president Kevise Sogotsu demanded immediate suspension of the erring personnel and officials (police and forest) and expressed hope that the government would keep its promises. In the event of inaction from the higher-ups, NTTU cautioned that it would along with all district units continue fight in the court of law as they would be left with no option. was stopped at Peducha by police personnel. It claimed that when the police personnel asked what the truck was ferrying, the owner of the timber, who is also a member of NTTU, replied that he was transporting local timber. NTTU claimed that the police personnel then immediately demanded Rs. 5,000. After much negotiation, the union said the truck was allowed to proceed after the member paid Rs. 1,500. Further, NTTU said that on February 10, the same truck, which halted at Medziphema for the night, was stopped at Forest Check Gate Chumuokedima around 3.10 p.m. The union said that the forest personnel manning the check gate asked the quantity of timber and whether the truck had transit permit (TP). When its member said he did not have TP, NTTU claimed
the forest officials outrightly demanded Rs. 22,000. It said the occupants pleaded that they could not pay such a hefty amount because of the expenses incurred during the long trip from Kiphire. In the end, NTTU claimed that the truck was released after payment of Rs. 5,000. In this regard, NTTU has questioned both the police and forest personnel on what ground they were “again resorting to this daylight robbery?” NTTU said that after it fought tooth and nail against illegal taxation at check gates besides moving the court, the state government ordered removal of interdistrict check gates. It said that timber farmers or any Naga citizen had the right to transport his own timber anywhere within Nagaland for local or personal (Cont’d on p-8) use.
NH reacts to Gov’s orders
DIMAPUR, FEB 10 (NPN): Naga Hoho (NH) said it was concerned over the continued “intimidation of State government employees through threats of levelling sedition charges and profiling.” Referring to governor RN Ravi’s recent order requiring State government employees to provide list of relatives connected with NPGs and threatening to initiate sedition charge against those asserting for Naga people for political self-determination, NH president HK Zhimomi and general secretary K Elu Ndang stated that this did not reflect well of his intent and agenda. NH said such directives from the governor to the State government were nothing but “another form to dehumanise Naga people’s hopes and aspirations”. Condemning what it
termed as “dictatorial attitude” of the governor and for not even having the civility to listen and consult an elected government, NH urged upon chief minister Neiphiu Rio and the State cabinet “not to allow a titular head undermine the existence of an elected government”. NH alleged that this was “an extension of fascism into Nagaland” where Naga people, who have been traditionally democratic, were suddenly assumed unfit to govern themselves. It said the governor was trying to break the people into tribes, groups and now beginning to target and criminalise individuals. NH also slammed the alleged “attempt to prosecute Dr Inato Jimomi and stifle rest of the Nagas” and asserted that Jimomi or any Naga had the right and freedom to express love for their (Cont’d on p-8) land.
