COVID-19: State to seal Intl border

KOHIMA, FEB 12 (NPN): State home department has issued an alert against novel corona virus by directing deputy commissioners of districts bordering Myanmar to take immediate steps in sealing the international frontier as part of an overall preventive initiative against spread and transmission of the deadly virus. The notification was issued by deputy secretary Hatneikim Kipgen. Novel corona virus has claimed over 1,000 lives in China while several thousand confirmed cases have been reported. The health and family welfare (H&FW) department has also directed all its officers and staff to remain in their places of posting till further notice. H&FW principal director Vizolie Z Suokhrie said this in an order issued on Wednesday. Speaking to Nagaland Post, H&FW deputy director and spokesperson on corona virus Dr Nyan Kikon said from January 30 till date, 74 persons had returned from China and other affected countries. By-elections: YTC bans canvassing

DIMAPUR, FEB 12 (NPN): Yimchungrü Tribal Council (YTC) has resolved that no individuals should canvas or promote political agendas for the forthcoming by-poll to 60 Pungro-Kiphire A/C before the poll date announcement by Election Commission. In a press release, YTC general secretary Laji Luyanba said that the resolution was adopted at an emergency held at Nagaland House, Delhi attended by YTC officials, executives and advisors. It has directed all the frontal leaders under YTC and GBs and Councils not to involve in politics. Failure to abide by its directive, YTC cautioned that the necessary action would be taken against the defaulters as deemed fit.

WSH supports NTUCT DIMAPUR, FEB 12 (NPN): Western Sumi Hoho has expressed solidarity with the Naga Tribal Union Chümoukedima Town (NTUCT) over the latter’s resolve to prevent training of about 1,200 fresh police recruits at Chümoukedima town. WSH said it supported recruiting of unemployed youth, but demanded that an open recruitment system “through the system of right procedure and a transparent system be judiciously implemented at the earliest for the sake of posterity.”

As per World Health Organisation, there have been 45,125 novel corona virus cases, of which 4,781 have recovered, and 1,115 deaths till 6 am on Wednesday, while three cases have been detected in India in India (Kerala) with no death.

nCoV renamed as ‘COVID-19’ by WHO

GENEVA, FEB 11 (PTI): The new coronavirus that has killed over 1,000 people in China and sickened more than 43,000 others globally has been named ‘COVID-19’, the World Health Organisation said on Tuesday. “We had to find a name that did not refer to a geographical location, an animal, an individual or group of people, and which is also pronounceable and related to the disease,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was quoted by the official Chinese media as saying at a media conference in Geneva on Tuesday. The CO stands for corona, the VI for virus and the D for disease, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of WHO, announced Tuesday at a news conference at the agency’s headquarters in Geneva. The death toll from the virus in China on Monday rose to 1,017 with confirmed cases totalling to 42,708, Chinese health officials said on Monday.

JLF to constitute panel for early pol. settlement

DIMAPUR, FEB 12 (NPN): Joint Legislators’ Forum (JLF) on Naga Political Issue has decided to constitute a core committee for reaching a negotiated political settlement early. In this regard a nominating committee has been formed with NLA speaker and JLF chairman Sharingain Longkumer, leader of opposition TR Zeliang, parliamentary affairs minister Neiba Kronu and H&FW minister S Pangnyu Phom as members. The committee has been entrusted to form the core committee comprising legislators cutting across party affiliations to urge the Centre and all stakeholders to reach an early settlement of the Naga political issue. This followed a consultative meeting of JLF held under the chairmanship of NLA Speaker at the conference hall of Assembly Secretariat in Kohima Wednesday. During the meeting, the members deliberated extensively on the Naga political Issue and felt the urgent necessity for reaching an early negotiated political settlement and constitute a core committee in this (Cont’d on p-7) regard.

LPG price hiked; Oppn demands roll back

NEW DELHI, FEB 12 (PTI): Cooking gas LPG price on Wednesday was hiked by a steep Rs 144.5 per cylinder due to spurt in benchmark global rates of the fuel. But to insulate domestic users, the government almost doubled the subsidy it provides on the fuel to keep per cylinder outgo almost unchanged. LPG price was increased to Rs 858.50 per 14.2 kg cylinder from Rs 714 previously, according to a price notification of stateowned oil firms. This is the steepest hike in rates since January 2014. Domestic LPG users, who are entitled to buy 12 bottles of 14.2-kg each at subsidised rates in a year, will get more subsidy. The government subsidy payout to domestic users has been increased from Rs 153.86 per cylinder to Rs 291.48, industry officials said. For PMUY beneficiaries, the subsidy has increased from Rs 174.86 to Rs 312.48 per cylinder. KOHIMA, FEB 12 (NPN): Along with other Nagaland University (NU) campuses, the NU campus at Meriema Wednesday organized sit-in protest against recent attack on teachers and students in various universities across the country during protest against Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizen. The protest was attended by Nagaland University Teachers’ Association (NUTA) members, research scholars’ forum, student representatives and others. Speaking at the event, CEC NUTA president Prof.

Rosemary Dzüvichu expressed serious concern over the attacks on teachers and students during the past months at various universities. Dzüvichu said CAA was highly undemocratic and against the secular fabric of the country. Prof. Dzüvichu said it was time for the central government to listen to the voice of the citizens and change the policy and revoke the CAA. Maintaining that every citizen should be able to exercise their fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution, CEC NUTA president remarked that if the government did not respect the constitution then

DIMAPUR, FEB 12 (NPN): T Tali, former minister of Nagaland, passed away in Dimapur on Wednesday after a brief illness. He was 77. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, son, son in-law, two granddaughters, three brothers and three sisters. Family sources said send-off ser vice would be held at his private residence, House No. 33 next to East Dimapur Ao Baptist Church, Purana Bazaar on February 13, 2020 at 8am and funeral service would be held on February 14, 2020 at Kangtsung Village, Mokokchung. Late T Tali first became an MLA in 1977 and was elected five times from 21 Tuli constituency and served as minister for two consecutive terms before his retirement from active politics in 2008. Leaders from across the political spectrum led by state chief minister Neiphiu Rio have mourned the demise of former minister.

In a condolence message, chief minister said late Tali was a committed student leader, a sincere government servant and later joined politics and went on to become a minister in the government of Nagaland. Describing late Tali as “a fine gentleman with a soft spoken personality”, the chief minister said he made friends across the spectrum. In his death, Rio said the people of Nagaland have lost a good and prominent public leader, who loved and served the public for many years with zeal and commitment.

Kejriwal to take oath as Delhi CM on Feb 16 NEW DELHI, FEB 12 (PTI): AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal, who spearheaded the party’s landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly polls, will take oath as the chief minister for third consecutive time in a grand public ceremony on February 16 at the Ramlila Maidan here, amid indications all the outgoing ministers will be retained in the seven-member Cabinet. CTAMK flays malpractice in recruitment

DIMAPUR, FEB 12 (NPN): The executive body of Chumoukedima Town Angamimia Mechü Krotho (CTAMK) along with its affiliating units– Chumoukedima Town Mothers’ Association, Chumoukedima Town Youth Organisation and Chumoukedima Students’ Union – held an emergency meeting Wednesday over appointment of about 1,200 police personnel as against only 208 posts advertised and recruited through open recruitment rallies on November 15, 16 and 18, 2019. Condemning such act of nepotism and unfair practice in Naga Christian society, the meeting decided to oppose the malpractice until and unless corrective measures were taken. It also requested the public and NGOs to come forward and join hands to fight against such malpractice in government establishment even as thousands of educated Naga youth were seeking employment to earn their livelihood. This was stated in a press release by CTAMK president Zeneilie Angami and general secretary T Kedorü Kuotsu.

JCPI reiterates demand for one cut-off date

DIMAPUR, FEB 12 (NPN): Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) has reiterated its demand that there should be only one cut-off date of December 1, 1963 for enforcement of ILP in the State, including Dimapur, which was “non-negotiable”. JCPI demanded that the government get into the practical aspect of implementing ILP with proper standard operating procedures backed by clear-cut official notifications. Observing with all seriousness that its deadline of January 31, 2020 for submission of Banuo Commission’s report on RIIN had been totally ignored, JCPI during a meeting on Wednesday also decided to convene an important meeting of all tribal apex bodies and leading mass-based civil society organisations at Saramati Hotel 11 am on February 18 to discuss (Cont’d on p-7) the next plan of action.

DIMAPUR, FEB 12 (NPN): Latvian ambassador to India and Sri Lanka, Artis Bertulis kicked-off the first leg of the ‘Choral Festival’ here at Patkai Christian College as part of the four-state musical tour organized by Embassy of Latvia in India in collaboration with Associate Board of Royal School of Music (ABRSM). Renowned Latvian music director, Janis Ozols conducted the choir comprising of singers from Patkai Christian College (Autonomous), Hope Centre for Excellence, Kuda Village Baptist Church in front of a full house. Ambassador Bertulis’s wife-- Esmeralda Bertulis who is also a professional singer and a pianist along with Laura Jukabsone, a composer, artistic director of vocal group Latvian Voice joined the choir.

talents. Most importantly, Esmeralda and Janis said they were more impressed by the tenor, adding it is like a gold mine to find good tenor singers. However, in order to hone the singing skills, such upcoming singers needed thorough guidance and the grit, they added.

While admitting that there was huge potential amongst the Nagas, they reiterated that to become a real professional singer one has to undergo a lot of hard work. Some of the singers can make it big, provided they commit themselves to be trained and work hard, they added.

KOHIMA, FEB 12 (NPN): Ambassador of Latvia to India, Artis Bertulis, on Wednesday expressed his desire to collaborate with Nagaland for promotion of culture, music and education in the state. Interacting with media persons at Hotel Vivor here on Wednesday, Bertulis expressed happiness over Naga people’s concentration on preservation their culture and heritage. The visiting dignitary, who is on his maiden visit to Nagaland, said that he met chief minister Neiphiu Rio, chief secretary Temjen Toy and leaders of Task Force for Music & Arts (TaFMA) and discussed on possibility to work together towards promotion of music, especially choral music. that Latvia has a strong tradition of choral singing, the ambassador said he would love to have music representation of Nagaland to Europe by 2023 during song festival. “Talented musicians can also study for degree in our academy,” he said. In reciprocal, he said “we also talked about our possible participation in the Hornbill festival of Nagaland.” The ambassador, who visited the State Museum, said “I found similarity in the handicraft though we are 4000 miles away.
