NPA condemns

Nagaland Press Association (NPA) has vehemently condemned the intimidation and harassment meted out to media personnel covering the bandh on February 13 at Dimapur. Instead of recognizing and appreciating the service rendered for the benefit of the society, NPA said it was “painful and disappointing that the people, who are benefiting out of journalists works and their contributions, continuously harass, humiliate and hinder their movements thoughtlessly time and again.” NPA has once again urged the organizers of the bandh and its volunteers to recognize the nature of work carried out by journalists during such time and also to maintain discipline.

Town Ward Union. However, schools were allowed to function. The bandh was peaceful with no untoward incidents. Women in big numbers enforce bandh in Dimapur and Wokha Staff Reporter

Dimapur, Feb 13 (NPN): On the first day of the phaseII of the indefinite bandh in Dimapur, which began Monday from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m., normal life was totally paralysed as thousands of volunteers enforced the bandh under the aegis of DNYF. Riot police in their full gear along with some armed personnel were on static duty at various locations. The interesting feature of the bandh in Dimapur was active participation of hundreds of women in different areas alongside the menfolk. Talking to this reporter, one of the woman volunteer said: “NPF leadership should understand that

the only solution was that T.R.Zeliang resign as chief minister. NPF should not forget that it was we who voted them to power”. Another school teacher, when asked about 33% women reservation said “we (women) are not a separate entity. We women are not lesser as we are accorded due importance today. We are leaders in many fields and successful as entrepreneurs. I don’t accept reservation is an issue with women in general. Maybe with some who are politically ambitious.” Meanwhile, LHJAC media cell said that for the first time, women in large numbers from Lotha Eloe Hoho took part and assisted the volunteers in Wokha.

NTAC, JCC hit back at NPF; say don’t politicize issue NPF reacts to tribal bodies; 4 MLAs KOHIMA/DIMapUR, FEB 13 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC) and Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) have categorically made its stand clear that they were formed to carry forward the people’s movement, and warned politicians not to dilute the movement by taking undue advantage of the situation. Reacting to the statement issued by NPF press and media bureau alleging that NTAC Kohima and JCC were “holding the innocent civilians to ransom for political mileage of a vested interest”, NTAC and JCC rather pointed out that NPF party was holding the elected legislators by ransom in Kohima, depriving them of any conscience and from taking independent decision. Addressing media per-

sons in Dimapur, JCC members also alleged that several legislators were being confined at Hotel Japfu Kohima and at the residence of the chief minister. JCC asserted that such action was uncalled for, saying MLAs should come out in open to speak their mind to the people. Further, in a press note, NTAC media cell stated that NPF media bureau appeared to have no genuine concern for the people and was only trying to mislead the people by listening to their master’s voice. They said if only NPF had seriously listened to the people’s voice, it would be very clear to them that the demand of the people was for CM’s resignation on moral ground accepting full responsibility for the loss of lives.

JCC and NTAC said they were not agitators or protestors but only there to uphold the supreme value of Nagas right. It also questioned NPF media bureau for raking up the issue of nullifying the ULB poll even after knowing very well that three lives were lost. This has clearly displayed NPF attitude of “Khushi-khushi so as to achieve your cherished dream to remain in power and suppress the voice of the people.” NTAC and JCC further reminded NPF of the resolution No.2 adopted during the coordination meeting of February 7 between with all apex tribal hohos that-- “the historic movement under no circumstances would be politicized.” NTAC and JCC said it was unfortunate that without realizing the gravity

of the situation, they (NTAC & JCC) were being dragged into such issues by vested interest to deviate from the actual issue and demand. Meanwhile, JCC also came down heavily on NPF media cell and CMO for “personally attacking the JCC convenor Supu Jamir” and termed it as “unfortunate and unbecoming.” JCC maintained that Supu was voluntarily working for the JCC after he was asked to do so. Further, JCC backed the statement of its con-convenor, V. Nyehka that the chief minister had reportedly wanted to remain in chair till March end, financial year. JCC claimed that this was conveyed to them by a highly placed reliable source, which they wished not to name.

DIMAPUR, FEB 13 (NPN): Reacting to Kohima-based tribe organizations’ appeal to all legislators to remain in their respective constituencies and Lotha Hoho’s objection to chief minister’s Delhi trip, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) Central on Monday said it was “a matter of sheer, unadulterated comedy” that there were now NGOs and committees asking where the legislators should be and questioning why the chief minister should or should not go to Delhi, and that too, when the chief minister was called to meet the union home minister. NPF central through its media and press bureau said that when there were “non-governmental players” taking upon themselves such cumbersome respon-

sibilities, it should come as no surprise to anyone if they have the “delusion to think that they have the authority to call for any chief minister to resign on moral or immoral grounds.” NPF also took a dig at NTAC convenor, K.T. Vilie, saying he was the “official PS” to Rio and that his “game plan was obvious”. Pointing out that since adequate security cover could not be extended to each and every MLA out of Kohima, NPF alleged that Vilie wanted the MLAs to be in their constituencies so that they (MLAs) become prey for those elements which have more than mischief on their minds. Also, NPF has reacted to the purported rumours that one MP of the state was called to New Delhi “to dis-

cuss formalities as to how he should take over the helms of affairs of the state.” According to the NPF, the MP was “in reality” summoned to Delhi because “there have been negative reports from various quarters about his direct involvement in worsening the ongoing social unrest.” Further, quoting the Asian Age report published on February 13, the NPF said the report quoted sources in the Home Ministry as saying that the Centre would extend help to the state government headed by TR Zeliang. It said that as per the report, the home ministry had “informed Mr Rio that the fate of the Government will be decided only by the strength of legislators.” (On revocation appeal, see p-8) K Y M C
