Myanmar military helped curb insurgency in NE NEW DELHI, FEB 13 (AGENCIES): At a time when sections of the international community are slamming Myanmar’s military for appropriating power in a coup, Indian Army chief Gen. Manoj Mukund Naravane acknowledged the role played by the military junta in helping curb insurgency in the North East. Drawing a direct link between economic growth and development on the one hand and security on the other, Naravane noted that there had been “encouraging improvement” in the internal security situation in North East. Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya and large parts of Assam were practically free from insurgency with level of violence significantly going down, he said at a seminar in New Delhi. “While relentless operations by the security forces and proactive government policies have laid the foundation, favourable external

environment with Myanmar and Bangladesh has struck at the roots of the insurgent organizations,” Naravane said in a speech at a seminar jointly organized by the New Delhi United Services Institute think tank and the Assam Rifles which oversees security in North East in conjunction with Indian army. The reference was to Bangladesh and Myanmar having friendly ties with India as a result of which both had cooperated with
New Delhi in its efforts to stamp out insurgency in its North East. Bangladesh had handed over arrested Indian insurgents while Myanmar had taken part in coordinated operations with India along their common borders. “A series of operations under Operation Sunrise with Myanmar Army has witnessed growing cooperation and synergy between the soldiers on ground with reasonable operational dividends,” Naravane said referring to coordinated
military operations by India and Myanmar to flush out insurgents using Myanmar as a base for anti India operations. The comments by the Indian army chief underline the importance of Myanmar and the role played by their army in India’s security calculus. They coincide with thousands of pro-democracy protestors gathering in Myanmar to demand the reversal of the February 1 coup that removed Aung San Suu Kyi from power. In his speech, Naravane said the improvement of the security situation had resulted in a “realigned counter insurgency strategy” in the North East. Troops tied down by counter insurgency operations had been freed up and were assigned to the Northern borders, he said. Describing North East as “the Centre of Gravity for sub-regional connectivity” and consequently “a launch pad for Act East initiatives,”
Naravane said the region was however seen as “a laggard in terms of growth and development.” “Protracted insurgencies, legacy issues further accentuated after partition and inefficient integration with rest of India account for much of what the region faces today,” he said. Making a case for speeding up development given the relatively better security environment, Naravane said there was a need to speed up local and regional connectivity projects. These were “central to unleashing the potential of the North East and balancing the influence of China,” he said. “There is a need for an apex body to coordinate multi-agency efforts,” he said. An “umbrella organization” christened the North East Integrated Security Council that had been proposed to galvanise the strategy, efforts and resources amongst all stakeholders has been proposed,” he said.
Farmers demand judicial Cracks resurface in State BJP unit probe into Jan 26 violence 9 district presidents demanding
NEW DELHI, FEB 13 (PTI): Protesting farmer unions on Saturday demanded a high-level judicial inquiry into the violence during the tractor rally in Delhi on January 26 and the alleged ‘false” cases slapped on the peasants. Addressing a press conference at the Singhu border, Samyukta Kisan Morcha leaders asked farmers who are getting police notices not to appear before the force directly and instead approach the legal cell constituted by the unions for any assistance. Kuldeep Singh, a member of SKM’s legal cell, said that a retired judge of the Supreme Court or high court should probe the incidents to unravel the “conspiracy” behind the January 26 violence and the alleged “false cases” against the farmers. According to SKM leaders, 16 farmers who had participated in the tractor parade are still untraceable. In the Republic Day violence, over 500 police personnel had been injured, while a protestor had died.
At the press conference, another leader Ravinder Singh said that 122 farmers had so far been arrested by Delhi Police in connection with 14 of the 44 FIRs, adding that SKM will provide legal and financial aid to all the arrested farmers. Morcha leaders claimed that “false” cases were being slapped on farmers charging them with serious offences like dacoity and attempt to murder to “harass” them. Ravinder said that the Morcha will provide Rs 2,000 to every arrested farmer for spending in the prison canteen. A legal team of SKM had on Friday visited the Tihar jail where 112 farmers were currently lodged, he said. SKM demanded that its legal panel be allowed to meet the arrested farmers without any restrictions and its monetary help be disbursed to them. “The SKM legal panel has strongly condemned the Delhi government and the police for issuing notice under section 160 CrPC to the farmers in order to rope them in false cases,” it stated.

Along’s ouster threaten to quit
DIMAPUR, FEB 13 (NPN): Cracks have resurfaced in the Nagaland state BJP unit with at least nine district and organisational presidents threatening to resign if the party central leadership failed to urgently intervene into the crisis within BJP Nagaland by the end of February 2021. In a reminder to BJP national president JP Nadda, the district and organizational presidents said they had on many occasions submitted representations to the central leadership seeking urgent intervention into the crisis. The signatories included Phek unit president Nücütso Rüho, Wokha unit president Yanthungo Kikon, Aboi (org-dist) president Esnu, Peren unit president Ringsangai John Panmei, Mon unit president Nyawang Konyak, Noklak unit president P Demo, Tuensang unit president T Chongshon Chang, Kohima unit president Seyiekhrielie Nagi and Kiphire unit president Hobbs S Thonger.
They said that in all their petitions they had “listed out and made clear the arbitrary and duplicitous functioning of our State President and his henchmen”. They also said that they had put forward appeal for implementation of the ‘one man, one post’ principle in Nagaland as the incumbent state president was a Legislator and Minister with many important portfolios to look after and cannot provide time to party Karyakartas from all levels. Further, the signatories said they had also warned that if the party was to face the next State general elections 2023 under the present presidentship, the party’s “historical tally” of 12 MLAs in the present Assembly would reduce to single digit. They said their warnings stand vindicated to a degree by the November 3, 2020 byelection results of 60 Pungro A/C where BJP candidate lost by a huge margin. Since the present situation of party in Nagaland was of grave concern, the
signatories said they were “convinced that the time has come for us to make good on our declaration as mentioned above.” They, therefore, said that failure to urgently intervene into the crisis by the end of February would compel them to resign from their posts though they would “remain loyal party Karyakartas in the future too.”
‘Along will continue’
Correspondent adds: Against the backdrop of the nine district presidents of state BJP party demanding removal of state BJP president Temjen Imna Along, a party source said that Along will continue as president and complete his term. The source justified that the Central leadership, by empowering the president with more responsibilities and assignments was an indication that removal was not going to happen. If the Central leadership did not want Along to continue as president, then he (Along) would have been asked to step down rather than giving more responsibilities, the source said, adding that the president has been discharging his duties with all sincerity and dedication.

Khathing to be honoured TAWANG, FEB 13 (PTI/ AGENCIES): Padma Shree Major Ralengnao Bob Khathing MC, OBE,MC and C-in-C (GC) who was instrumental in bringing Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh under the Indian Union, will be honoured for the first time on Sunday. As an assistant political officer of the erstwhile North East Frontier Agency (NEFA) and present-day Arunachal Pradesh, Khathing had carried out an audacious operation to bring Tawang under the Indian Union in the early 1950s under the direct supervision of the then Assam governor Jairamdas Daulatram. Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig. (Retd) B D Mishra and CDS General Bipin Rawat arrived here this afternoon to attend the foundation stone laying ceremony of Major Ralengnao Bob Khathing Memorial at Kalawangpo auditorium. “Khathing was one of the most significant heroes of India whose immense contribution cannot be forgotten. A due recognition will be given to Khathing, who was so far neglected,”
tax officials, village elders and prominent people of Tawang. He used diplomatic skills to win over the local Monpa community who were struggling under harsh taxes imposed by the Tibetian administration. He told the local people about India, its democracy and assured them that India will never impose unjustified tax on them. Soon, with the Assam Rifles men, Khathing took control of Tawang, tricolour was hoisted in Tawang and Bumla and the area became part of India. In 1953, the Government of India constituted the Indian Frontier Administrative Service (IFAS) and Khathing was inducted as one of the two officers of the civil service. His first posting as an IFAS officer was at Tuensang Frontier Division as the Political Officer in 1954 and his contribution is reported in the establishment of the Village Volunteer Force. After four years at the post, he was promoted as the first Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung district. In 1961, he became the first Indian citizen to study at the National Defence College, New Delhi and completed the course in its second (Cont’d on p-8) batch.

Rijiju told PTI. Khathing’s son John, a retired IRS officer, and other family members will also be present at the function. Khathing, born on February 28,1912 a Naga from Manipur, was given order by Daulatram to march towards Tawang with 200 soldiers of Assam Rifles and 600 porters on January 17, 1951. Before World War II, Tawang was under the administrative control of the then independent Tibetan government. Despite several attempts, the British could not annex it. Guwahati/Aizawl, Feb 13 (IANS): The Assam Assembly on Friday discussed the Assam-Mizoram border disputes even as tension prevailed in the villages along the borders of the two northeastern states following the violent incidents on Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the southern Assam’s Hailakandi district officials, the prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Cr Pc have been continued on Friday along the bordering areas, in addition to the deployment of a large contingent of security forces in the area. to protest cannot be anytime, J&K will get statehood at right time: Shah Righteverywhere: Supreme Court New Delhi, Feb 13 (IANS): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday reiterated vehemently that his government is determined to give full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir at appropriate time. Asserting that “it will happen”, the Minister also requested the political parties and its leaders to understand the situation of the erstwhile state which was bifurcated into two Union Territories-- J&k with a legislative and Ladakh without one. “Jammu and Kashmir will be given statehood at an appropriate time... Please understand the situation of the Union Territory and avoid to give any speech that misguides the people of J&K,” Shah said while speaking in the Lok Sabha. Delivering a speech to support the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which seeks to replace an ordinance to merge the Jammu and Kashmir cadre of civil services officers with the Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, the Minister clarified that the Bill has nothing to do with the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir. “We will give statehood. I have already said that it is a temporary system.” On the opposition’s

question about what happened in 17 months in J&K after withdrawal of Article 370, the Minister questioned “what about your 70 years rule, if your are asking about our work?.” “They should first think about themselves before asking me this question.” Giving account of the Central government’s work in Jammu and Kashmir, the Minister said it had established Panchayati Raj in the Union Territory with 51.7 per cent voting without firing any single bullet. He later listed steps taken so far for the welfare of people in Jammu and Kashmir. The Minister further said: “Jammu and Kashmir is in our hearts.” On a question about the Supreme Court’s opin-
ion on holding a hearing on repeal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019 after which the region was bifurcated into two UTs, Shah said: “We are ready with our logic behind our step... but where is the Congress?” “It doesn’t mean that we will not do anything for the welfare of Jammu and Kashmir untill the Supreme Court starts its hearing on the matter. What kind of argument is it?” About the restriction on 2G and 4G services in Jammu and Kashmir, the Minister said, “This is not the time of the UPA, this is the Modi government. The restriction on 2G and 4G was to avoid spread of rumours.” Earlier, introducing the Jammu and Kashmir
Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2021, Minister of State for Home Affairs G. Kishan Reddy said the government was working to take Jammu and Kashmir on the path to development. He said around 170 central laws are being implemented in Jammu and Kashmir after abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution that gave a special status to the erstwhile state. Raising objections on the bill, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury asked, “What was the need to bring an ordinance for this? Regularly promulgating ordinances is not good for a parliamentary democracy as an ordinance should be preceded by an emergency situation or any urgency.” “Our point of contention is loud and clear,” Chowdhur y said, adding after abrogating Article 370, the government showed a “dream” to the people that they would turn Jammu and Kashmir into heaven and create jobs there. “Introduction of this bill reflects that the government took the step of abrogating Article 370 without any preparation,” Chowdhury alleged. The Congress leader said Jammu and Kashmir is a sensitive state and the cadre should be local and officers having ground knowledge should be appointed there. He alleged
New Delhi, Feb 13 (PTI): “The right to protest cannot be anytime and everywhere,” the Supreme Court said as it dismissed a plea seeking review of its verdict passed last year in which it had held the occupation of public ways during the anti-CAA protests at Shaheen Bagh here was “not acceptable”. The top court said there may be some spontaneous protests but in case of prolonged dissent or protest, there could not be continued occupation of public place affecting the rights of others. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Aniruddha Bose and Kirshna Murari said: “We have perused the review petition and record of the civil appeal, and are convinced that the order of which review has been sought, does not suffer from any error apparent warranting its reconsideration.” The bench, which has passed the order recently, said it had considered the earlier judicial pronouncements and recorded its opinion that “the Constitutional scheme comes with a right to protest and express dissent but with an obligation to have certain duties”. “The right to protest cannot be anytime and everywhere. There may be some spontaneous protests but in case of prolonged dissent or protest, there cannot be continued occupation of
public place affecting rights of others,” the bench said while dismissing a plea by one Shaheen Bagh resident Kaniz Fatima and others seeking review of last year’s verdict of October 7. The top court, which considered the matter in the judges’ chambers also rejected the prayer for open court hearing in the matter. The apex court had on October 7, 2020, held that public spaces could not be occupied indefinitely and demonstrations expressing dissent had to be in designated places alone. It had said occupation of public ways in the antiCAA protests at Shaheen Bagh locality here was “not acceptable”. Observing that democracy and dissent “go hand in hand”, the apex court had said constitutional scheme came with the right to protest and express dissent but with an obligation towards certain duties. It had said the mode and manner of dissent against colonial rule during India’s freedom struggle cannot be equated with dissent in a self-ruled democracy. “However, while appreciating the existence of the right to peaceful protest against a legislation...we have to make it unequivocally clear that public ways and public spaces cannot be occupied in such a manner
and that too indefinitely,” the top court had said. The apex court’s verdict had come on a plea by lawyer Amit Sahni against blockade of a road in Shaheen Bagh area by those protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which aimed to provide Indian citizenship to persecuted minorities of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. It had held that the protest at Shaheen Bagh was a blockage of a public way which caused grave inconvenience to commuters. The top court had said such kind of occupation of public ways, whether at the site in question or anywhere else for protests, was not acceptable and “the administration ought to take action to keep the areas clear of encroachments or obstructions”. “Democracy and dissent go hand in hand, but then the demonstrations expressing dissent have to be in designated places alone,” it had said, adding: “We cannot accept the plea of the applicants that an indeterminable number of people can assemble whenever they choose to protest.” Restrictions were imposed on the Kaindi KunjShaheen Bagh stretch and the Okhla underpass, which were closed on December 15, 2019 due to the protests.
I’m under ‘surveillance’, claims TMC MP TMC will win WB polls with 250 plus seats: Abhishek Mahua Moitra; writes to Delhi Police chief

NEW DELHI, FEB 13 (AGENCIES): Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra took to Twitter on Saturday to claim that she is “under surveillance”. The MP from Krishnanagar in West Bengal is facing a privilege motion brought against her in the Lok Sabha for citing allegations of sexual misconduct against a former chief justice of India, reports India Today. Mahua Moitra has now written a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner SN
Shrivastava and the SHO of Barakhamba Road police station seeking withdrawal of the security forces allegedly deployed outside her home. In the letter, Moitra claimed the station house officer (SHO) of Barakhamba Road police station visited her at her official residence in Delhi on Friday. She adds that soon after, around 10 pm on Friday, 3 BSF (Border Security Force) officers “armed with assault rifles had been deputed” outside
her residence. “The conduct of these armed officers indicate that they are making notes of movements to and from my residence, it appears to me that I am under some sort of surveillance,” Mahua Moitra said in her letter to the Delhi Police Commissioner. “I wish to remind you that Right to Privacy is a Fundamental Right guaranteed to me, as a citizen of this country,” the TMC MP added. While requesting Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava to withdraw the personnel, Mahua Moitra said in her letter, “Upon making inquiries, I was informed that the armed officers had been deputed from Police Station Barakhamba Road for my protection.” “However, I being an ordinary citizen of this country, did neither ask nor want any such protection,” Mahua Moitra stated.
Arrested J-e-M chief’s shocking disclosures NIA Ajit Doval was on JeM’s hit list due to surgical strike
Jammu, Feb 13 (IANS): Hidayatullah Malik, the chief of Jaish-e-Mustafa (JeM), a front outfit of Jaishe-Muhammad (JeM) terror group, who was arrested on February 6 in J&K’s Jammu city, has made shocking disclosures to his interrogators sending the security paraphernalia into a tailspin, both here and in Delhi. Malik was arrested from Sanjwani area of Jammu on February 6 although he had been putting up in Bhatindi area of the city for quite sometime. Malik, according to a top source, has disclosed that he had carried out a successful video recce of the office of Ajit Doval, the national security advisor, at Sardar Patel Bhawan in Delhi. “He disclosed that he had carried out the video recce on the instructions of his handler in Pakistan who had directed him to do so because the terrorists were planning to target some of the highest value Indian targets,” top source said. Doval is one of the most highly protected per-
that militancy is still prevalent in the union territory and people are living in an atmosphere of fear. The government had tried to turn Jammu and Kashmir into a large prison, Chowdhury said, adding they blocked telecommunication services and failed to normalise the situation there. “There is unemployment, restriction, lost avenues and total confusion,” Chowdhury added. He further said the government had promised to bring back Kashmiri Pandits to the Kashmir Valley but has failed to ensure their return. “Please think for Jammu and Kashmir with new ideas and do not take ad-hoc measures,” he said, adding the government should make Jammu and Kashmir a state and create a cadre to appoint officers there. Speaking against the bill, J&KNC leader Hasnain Masoodi said this bill is akin to an assault on the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “You are continuously increasing confusion...What is the objective of this bill? You are taking Jammu and Kashmir towards uncertainty through this bill,” he said, adding appointed officers should have connect with the ground realities. He added that the government should restore the position of Jammu and Kashmir to that prior to August 5, 2019.
sons in the country. He has been on the terrorist hit list because of his role in the Uri surgical strike in 2016 and the Balakote attack in 2019. Doval had also added to the worries of his enemies across the LoC by his masterly handling of the security situation in Kashmir in 2019 when articles 370 and 35A were abrogated and the state of J&K divided into two union territories. Separatists and terrorists had warned of a bloodbath if India ever tried to change the status of J&K. Concerns of a mass agitation were also voiced by some intelligence agencies before Delhi chose to go ahead with its decision to abrogate the special status of J&K. “The NSA not only remained stationed here all along to personally supervise every little security detail, but he also overlooked his personal security by going out to meet the people on the street during those crucial days,” said the top source. To the utter bewilder-
ment of his enemies, Doval, with the complete synergy of all the security agencies, was able to ensure that not a shot was fired in the aftermath of 370 abrogation. This, according to the disclosure made by Malik, was more than the terrorists and their handlers could take. “Malik had taken an Indigo airlines flight from Srinagar to Delhi on May 24, 2019 and after carrying out the video recce of the NSA’s office, he returned to Srinagar travelling in public transport buses. “He also disclosed of carrying out recces of the international border in Samba district of Jammu division in 2019. “The car used in the suicide attack in May 2020 in Pulwama was also provided by him. Fortunately, the car was detected and defused. “He looted Rs 60 lakhs from a J&K Bank case van in Shopian district in 2020. He has disclosed code names and phone numbers of at least 10 terror handlers active in Pakistan,” top source
said.
Malik had joined the Hizbul Mujahideen outfit in July, 2019, worked as an overground worker (OGW) for the Jaish and later graduated to form and head the JeM, a front outfit of the original Jaish formed by Masood Azhar, the terror mastermind who was exchanged at Kandahar (Afghanistan) for the release of hostages of Indian airlines flight IC 814 in December 1999. Kandahar was controlled by Taliban in December 1999 and the demand for Azhar Masood’s release was made at the directions of Pakistan’s ISI. It must be mentioned that Ajit Doval had criticised the Indian government’s decision to swap the terrorists with the passengers of flight IC 814 calling it a diplomatic failure of the country. Doval had said that no one worth any consequence was contacted either by Jaswant Singh, the then foreign minister, or by Lalit Mansingh, the then foreign secretary before the decision was taken.
Kulpi, Feb 13 (PTI): Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday asserted the TMC will secure 250 plus seats while the saffron party will find it difficult to cross the double digit mark. He was countering the BJP’s claim of coming to power in the state by winning over 200 seats in the polls to the 294-member assembly due in April-May. Addressing a public meeting here in South 24 Parganas district, Banerjee who is the youth wing president of the party and nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee iterated that the saffron party’s clamour for a double-engine government in West Bengal (same party rule in the Centre as well as state) will fall flat before the single engine power of Mamata Banerjee. The TMC is going to form the government for the third consecutive term and the party will stay in power for 50 years, he said.
Terrorist involved in killing 3 BJP workers arrested Jammu, Feb 13 (IANS): The Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist from the Samba district of Jammu involved in the killing of three Bharatiya Janata Party workers and one policeman in Kashmir last year, officials said on Saturday. Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar told IANS that a team of Anantnag police arrested Zahoor Ahmad Rather, alias Khalid alias Sahil, of the terrorist outfit LeT (TRF) from Samba in Jammu. “He had been hiding in Bari Brahman. He had killed three BJP workers in Vessu, Kulgam last year and one policeman at Furrah in Kulgam,” Kumar said. “He received terrorist training in PoK in 2004 and brought five foreign terrorists with him to India. He surrendered in 2006 but last year again started killing politicians and policemen.” Police said he is being brought to Kashmir for questioning.
Abhishek Banerjee
“West Bengal will elect Mamata Banerjee as the chief minister for the third time,” the Diamond Harbour MP said. Referring to Dinesh Trivedi’s resignation from Rajya Sabha as a TMC member on Friday, Banerjee said “Trivedi was saying he was feeling suffocated. Let him go and get admitted in BJP’s ICU”. Noting that the only poll plank of the BJP is ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and it has no development agenda, the TMC leader alleged that the
saffron party does not know to give respect to women. “They say Jai Shri Ram and not Jai Siya Ram. This is because they don’t know to give respect to women”, he added. ‘Jai Siya Ram’, translates from Hindi to ‘glory to Sita and Lord Ram’ while ‘Jai Shri Ram’ denotes ‘hail Lord Ram’. The TMC youth wing chief also alleged that women are tortured in BJP-ruled states like Gujarat and UP. “See the way the saffron party showed disre-
spect to Mamata Banerjee at the birth anniversary celebrations of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at Victoria Memorial in the city”, he said. He claimed that BJP leaders coming from north India are a “bunch of outsiders” who are not aware of the culture of Bengal, and spreading fake news to confuse people. “Let me say our chief minister Mamata Banerjee will stand there like Maa Durga to fight against the BJP which has weapons like CBI and ED”, he said. Banerjee claimed that the saffron party is trying to influence farmers of the state by promising to provide Rs 18,000 in their accounts, if elected to power, but “Bengal will never sell its spine to the BJP”. The BJP has been saying that the saffron party, if voted to power in the state, will ensure that each farmer of the state gets Rs 18,000 in arrears under the PMKISAN scheme.
Part of Prashant Kishor s house in Bihar demolished for road widening project
Boundary wall of Prashant Kishore demolished in Bihar. (Image Source-NDTV)
Buxar (Bihar), Feb 13 (PTI): A portion of political strategist Prashant Kishors paternal residence here was on Saturday pulled down by the authorities who said the razed part of the property fell on land acquired for the widening of a national highway. The house was built by Shrikant Pandey, late father of the former key aide of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar with whom Kishor had burnt his bridges last year leading to his expulsion from the JD(U) in which he held the post of national vice-president. K K Upad-
hyay, the sub divisional magistrate who supervised the demolition, said the razed gate and part of the boundary wall was on the land which has been acquired for widening of NH-84. He said the administration was removing all property situated on the land acquired. In some instances the owners themselves are doing the needful, but Kishors house has been empty for quite some time so we had to bring in our machines. He said the district administration has already announced compensation to all those whose land has been ac-
quired and it will be handed over to the respective owners in due course. The SDM disclosed that a temple of Lord Brahma in the vicinity has also been shifted for the road widening project and was met with some resentment from the locals. Some people had raised an objection that the temple was being moved but property belonging to private persons was not being touched because they happened to be influential and well connected. Hopefully, they are satisfied with the impartiality of the administrative action, he told PTI over phone.

Prolonged delay on RIIN
E
ven as all the recognised indigenous tribes of Nagaland including communities have backed the demand to enact Register of Indigenous Inhabitant of Nagaland (RIIN) by introducing and legislating it in the current 7th session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, indications are that this will not happen. After vociferous demand in 2018 by various organisations like NSF and later, the Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) under the aegis of Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) and hohos for implementation of ILP to cover Dimapur, the state government in July 2019 constituted RIIN. Thus, RIIN is a consequence of the demand for extension of ILP to entire Dimapur district. Extension of Inner Line Permit (ILP) under Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act 1873 to Dimapur district meant that this has to be on the basis of identifying who is and who is not an indigenous inhabitant. Dimapur had remained the only district in the state that was not a tribal belt. However it was only 16 years after statehood and on November 21,1979 that the state government issued a notification which declared Dimapur district as a tribal belt. The notification makes it mandatory for “every non-indigenous person” who entered the district after the date of the notification, to obtain ILP within 90 days. In order to implement ILP, it was considered necessary to frame rules and accordingly the government had on July 2019 decided to form the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN). A three-member Banuo Z.Jamir Commission was constituted to determine who was and who was not an indigenous inhabitant of the state. The state government maintained that RIIN was to prevent outsiders from acquiring fake indigenous inhabitant certificates for seeking jobs and be beneficiaries of government schemes. The terms of reference of the commission would be eligibility criteria to be an indigenous inhabitant, authority to authenticate claims of being indigenous, place of registration as indigenous inhabitants and basis of claims of being indigenous. The then chief secretary in 2019, asserted that rights and properties including land of non-Naga inhabitants of Nagaland before statehood, December 1, 1963 and those before declaration of then Dimapur subdivision under Kohima as a ‘tribal belt’ in 1979 will have to be protected. Healso clarified that RIIN will first identity the Naga indigenous inhabitants of the state and than other non-Nagas who have settled in Dimapur before 1979 and those settled in other parts of the state before December 1, 1963, the year of Nagaland statehood. The Banuo Commission on RIIN had submitted its report in 2019. It is now more than a year that the report has been with the government and copies of which were also received by JCPI. With more than one and half year after the commission submitted its report to the government, it is not understood as to why the government has yet to clear the decks even after such a long time. RIIN is a serious matter which is very important and merits urgent attention of the government. In failing to do what should have been done, in addressing the demands of the public, the government is only revealing that it does not have the head nor heart to address such matters as much as it has for projects. The opposition also needs to speak out its mind over RIIN and remove the mist of confusion.
DailyDevotion The Devotion of Hearing
Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant hears.” —1 Samuel 3:10 Just because I have listened carefully and intently to one thing from God does not mean that I will listen to everything He says. I show God my lack of love and respect for Him by the insensitivity of my heart and mind toward what He says. If I love my friend, I will instinctively understand what he wants. And Jesus said, “You are My friends…” (John 15:14). Have I disobeyed some command of my Lord’s this week? If I had realized that it was a command of Jesus, I would not have deliberately disobeyed it. But most of us show incredible disrespect to God because we don’t even hear Him. He might as well never have spoken to us. The goal of my spiritual life is such close identification with Jesus Christ that I will always hear God and know that God always hears me (see John 11:41). If I am united with Jesus Christ, I hear God all the time through the devotion of hearing. A flower, a tree, or a servant of God may convey God’s message to me. What hinders me from hearing is my attention to other things. It is not that I don’t want to hear God, but I am not devoted in the right areas of my life. I am devoted to things and even to service and my own convictions. God may say whatever He wants, but I just don’t hear Him. The attitude of a child of God should always be, “Speak, for Your servant hears.” If I have not developed and nurtured this devotion of hearing, I can only hear God’s voice at certain times. At other times I become deaf to Him because my attention is to other things— things which I think I must do. This is not living the life of a child of God. Have you heard God’s voice today?

Post-mortem
Foot Hill Road – Need Political Momentum T he historic Nagaland foot hill road – famous for its long standing delay, which will connect the larger part of northwest and the southern part of Nagaland with Dimapur, has found some genuine voices recently. The reason being is the road and economic blockade resorted to by some groups in Assam against entering Nagaland. This, of course, caused inconveniences to the people of seven districts. They have to go through the Assam highways to enter their respective districts in Nagaland. It is known to all that if this foot hill road materializes, will benefit not only the transportation of essential commodities but also will protect the travelers to Mon, Longleng,Tuensang, Kiphire, Zunheboto, Mokokchung and Wokha districts from perennial harassment from our neighbours in Assam. Nagaland is a slow state but some regions are slower than the others. In
T
an age when communication makes so much difference, being slow means going more backwards. Incredibly this is because politicians and elected legislators of Nagaland do not do the simple things that they are elected to do. What we are experiencing today is a part of a larger story of an all decline and decay in political momentum particularly from the districts of Mon, Longleng, Tuensang, Kiphire, Zunheboto, Mokokchung and Wokha. It is reiterated that in recent times the foot hill road assume special importance but what ails this road is a collective incapacity to change its self destructive ways. The general public is the most enthusiastic votary of the comfort that will come through the foot hill road. People from this region are even contemplating cooperation in trade, tourism and transport. But the state government is less than enthusiastic. The reason is best known to the government. Let there
be no negativism over this project. It is a recipe for building new bridges both physically and politically. It is seen that Nagaland foot hill road coordination committee (NFHRCC) was compelled to ask for financial contribution from the people towards advancement of this project. If so, will it not tell upon the quality of the ruling government? Foot hill road construction should not be treated like a nobody’s child. It requires determination and the will of the entire spectrum of political and social activists irrespective of colours on board. Such a task cannot be done by those who harbor partisan agenda. The road ahead is tough but this is where it requires massive people’s support. People of the region should treat this project as an election issue. The special geographical features of the state deserve to bring a revolution of sorts in the communication network. Transport is the sinews of
Let children chase their dreams
he Hindi movie 3 Idiots (2009) focuses on a group of youngsters studying for an engineering degree. One of them, Farhan, is passionate about wildlife photography, but he goes to the engineering college to keep his father in good humour. As expected, he fails to do well there. He remains oppressed by the brooding melancholy that arises from the thought of not being able to lead a life of his choice. Things reach a tipping point by the time Farhan’s father understands that his son’s interests lie elsewhere. The movie poignantly highlights the dilemma of those creatively inclined youngsters from middle-class families who, mostly under parental pressure, take up engineering or medical programmes and, in the process, crush their innate talent. Why is it that in our society, the artistic instinct continues to play second fiddle to applied Science and Math? Why are the Humanities still looked down upon as merely the last refuge of mediocrity? Many parents get overly reductive when they say that the Humanities streams do not offer career options, unlike Engineering and Medicine. At times parents, and even teachers, populate students’ lives with spectres of dread sure to wreak havoc if they diverge from the Science stream. Many students grow up internalising these fears and fail to disenthrall themselves from their stranglehold. The thickets of prejudice tend to narrow parents’ views. No wonder, even today, when a student pursues English literature in college, many labour under the delusion that they opted for it out of compulsion as they didn’t have enough marks to secure admission to the Science stream. We have grown inured to the notion that Science subjects are the forte of the bright and intelligent. After all, for some parents, a flourishing career in engineering or medicine is the sine qua non of status, money and recognition which a course in Humanities doesn’t seem to bring. There are also people who are fixed in their ways as they feel English as a subject is something that one studies only till Class 12. The very idea that one needs to study this subject at the university level somewhat baffles them. English is considered a ‘scoring’ subject, like Mathematics, for most students at the final board exams; nothing beyond that. What they read till Class 12 is definitely not literature. A majority of schools in our country don’t have Elective English at the senior secondary level. As a result, students
are not exposed to the works of great writers which can fuel their interest in English literature. What they have is a Core English syllabus that doesn’t require critical thinking and analytical skills. It comes as no surprise that students shy away from pursuing literature at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They believe that a degree in Science opens up new vistas of opportunity as compared to a degree in the Humanities. Social worker and author Sudha Murthy have a piece of advice for parents: “Lead by example, if you want your children to read, switch off your TV or phone and sit down to read yourself. Kids learn much more by example than a sermon.’’ Both parents and teachers should make an effort to identify and channelise the talents of youngsters in the right direction. Parents should eschew the tendency to force their children to opt for Science or Mathematics after Class 10 if they are not if they are not interested in them. If a student shows an inclination towards music, painting or journalism, parents should rather give them a free hand and help them achieve their goals as much as they can. Similarly, if a student displays amazing brilliance in Science subjects, let him pursue the subjects of his choice. Who knows there could be an Edison or an Einstein hidden inside your child? It has often been seen that parents try to choose the careers of their children and live vicariously through them. In Charles Dickens’ famous novel, Hard Times, a young girl, Louisa has a tendency to ask questions and to imagine. However, her father, Mr Gradgrind, who is a stickler for facts, tries his best to suppress this natural inclination, telling her that she must “never wonder.” In 2019, Paulo Coelho, the bestselling author of The Alchemist, tweeted that it took him 40 years to pen his first book. The reason was that his father, who was an engineer by profession, was fairly convinced that if his son chose to become a writer, he would starve to death! Everyone is born with inherent abilities. To mould a child’s destiny accordingly is the responsibility of both parents and teachers. We should ask our children what they want to be and help them be that, instead of mindlessly foisting our choices on them. The rewards of living according to one’s own instinct and inclination can be immense. Aditya Mukherjee The writer is a Delhi-based senior journalist
S
the state economy. Without adequate road system there can be no development of trade, social interaction and academic advancement. It is the road which determines location of many townships and its growth and nourishment. It is the road that gives its framework to all economic activities. Today majority of the people of the seven districts in Nagaland have to go through Assam’s’ highways and imagine how every traveler experiences pain and humiliation while passing through Assam. It is high time for elected legislators from these districts to rise to the occasion and to complete this by-pass project, otherwise this will reflect on their capability as public leaders. Therefore, a development conscious state trying to progress without proper road connectivity is by itself a contradiction. Nagaland state should embark upon policy of self developmental economic growths by setting free
the creative energy and business enterprises of our young people. Young generation is eager and wants to contribute in the economic growth. They are looking up to their political leadership. For a state to be meaningful, development has to be inclusive, comprehensive and extensive. Really speaking, planning and development in government are not a game of numbers. It should be based on priority. After all, development is an exercise in social engineering designed to give maximum benefit to maximum people. State level planning should not merely be urban centric. It is necessary to realize that future of urban life depends on how government strengthens the rural economy; otherwise there will be influx of rural people into urban towns in search of jobs and food. In such a scheme, the role of the state government is extremely important. State must provide at least minimum infrastructure – road that will provide
maximum coverage linking foot hills, valleys and other remote areas. An effective plan of action with people’s participation can only help in the expeditious realization of economic self reliance and social justice. Time has come to educate and to sensitize the general public over the importance and the immense value of this foot hill road through massive awareness campaign. Being a torch bearer the NFHRCC can coordinate the program by roping in all the stake holders to spread the awareness program. Print media too on regular intervals has highlighted the necessity of this road for the over-all interest of Nagaland. Therefore, to see the light of day, this road project needs a strongly renewed political momentum. Roads have universal value. They belong to all and must be supported and protected by all. Educating women, educating India
arojini Naidu, famously known as “Bulbul-i-Hind”, was the national symbol of female empowerment. She was a fervent advocate for women’s rights in pre-independence India, believing that “until [men raised] the fallen condition of women in [India] and [made] their voices heard, India’s salvation was only a distant dream”. Her words reflect her concern for an agendum parallel with India’s struggle for freedom. Undoubtedly, her spirit and dedication had inspired many and continues to do so as we celebrate the National Women’s Day on February 13, which happens to be Naidu’s birthday. Her vision holds true even in the 21st century as our Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes that it is essential to empower women for a nation to progress. We must break the shackles of gender stereotypes in every field and profession. Thereby, I am glad that there has been an increase of 16 per cent in women police personnel across India. On the other hand, an all-female Indian pilot team has made history after completing the longest non-stop commercial flight. I congratulate Flight Lieutenant Bhawana Kanth, who has become the first woman fighter pilot to be a part of the Republic Day parade; and Flight Lieutenant Swati Rathore has become the first woman flypast over Rajpath. My heart was filled with utmost pride seeing them reach new heights. National Women’s Day is also a day to celebrate the achievement of 105-year-old Pappammal from Tamil Nadu, who was
awarded the Padma Shri for her contribution to organic farming. Let us also commend Padma Shri awardee Indian physicist Rohini Godbole, who has been conferred with the ‘Ordre National du Metrite’ for fostering partnerships between France and India along with encouraging the enrolment of women in science. The Ministry of Education has taken multiple steps to promote women’s enrolment in technical education through the PRAGATI scholarship scheme. Further, the ministry has provisioned to increase women’s enrolment in engineering education — enrolment has increased in IITs, NITs, and IIEST from 8 per cent in 2016 to 14 per cent in 2018-19, 17 per cent in 201920 and 20 per cent in 2020-21 following the creation of 3,503 supernumerary seats in the last two and current academic year. Additionally, women candidates are now allowed a relaxation of two years for pursuing a PhD — the maximum duration of a PhD for women can be now six years. Even at the school level, we have been able to ensure greater participation of girls in education through initiatives such as opening of more schools, provision of free text-books, development of gender-segregated toilets in all schools, along with teachers’ sensitisation programmes on girls’ participation as well as provision for self-defence training for girl students from classes VI to XII. In addition to this, there will be an upgradation and opening of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) in Education-
ally Backward Blocks (EBBs) to increase girls’ participation in quality schools (up to Grade 12) as per the National Education Policy recommendations. “Gender-Inclusion Fund” to bridge the gap for providing equitable quality education to girls. The provisions of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) will be facilitated with our aim to attain the goal of education with excellence. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman has provided the much-needed financial stimulus for the implementation of NEP 2020. The Budget 2021-22 will lead India to become “Vishwa Guru”. While there has been an overall increase of Rs 2,684.59 crore (5.14 per cent) in the Budget allocation of Department of School Education & Literacy in Budget Estimate 2021-22 from Revised Estimate 2020-21. The Department of Higher Education budget has been increased by Rs 5,450.65 crore from the current year RE, raising the budget to Rs 38,350.65 crore. The substantial increase in public investment in education by the Central government will enable us to achieve a high-quality and equitable public education system for women. Like Sarojini Naidu, India’s citizens must have an agenda for equality parallel with a push to make the country a knowledge power. India’s women must come forward to facilitate the nation’s path to contribute to economic, social, cultural, intellectual, and technological progress and growth. Reader’s Post Digital divide in educational system faced in Nagaland Sir,
Digital divide in Education has a major impact on the students of all countries in the world. Students are facing issues with education because technology is not on the same page with all strata of the society. We all know that technology is a part of our social life in learning. The very fact that covid pandemic has proven the power of Technology in education has its own advantages and disadvantages. Many of the students have faced major drawbacks due to lack of proper gadgets and some has enjoyed the benefits of maximum gadgets to be used in the educational system. Now my question is, what can we do? When can the change happen? Why is it important for the development of the society? Who should take up the initiative? Parents /education institutions / the government? Because it directly and indirectly affects the growth of the country! Every year institutions produced lakhs of degree students but where do they end up? Are they all getting employed? Or jobless because we all know that fact that India has numbers of educated unemployed. And it is mostly because this section of people lacks the skills in technology since computer knowledge, internet like social media and many more advanced features are not taught in all the institution, and this is how students lack behind. For how long will this continue? And which generation will get equality in Education?? It is a very important thing to keep in mind as it automatically affects the well being of the country as students are the future of the country. Think a solution and make a change. NEW DELHI/ Chandigarh, FEB 13 (AGENCIES): Protesting farmer unions on Saturday demanded a high-level judicial inquiry into the violence that took place during the tractor parade in Delhi on January 26 and the alleged ‘false” cases slapped on the farmers. Addressing a press conference at the Singhu border, Samyukta Kisan Morcha leaders asked farmers who are getting police notices not to appear before the force
directly and, instead, approach the legal cell constituted by the unions for any assistance. Kuldeep Singh, a member of SKM’s legal cell, alleged that a retired judge of the Supreme Court or high court should probe the incidents to unravel the “conspiracy” behind the January 26 violence and the alleged “false cases” against the farmers. According to SKM leaders, 16 farmers who had participated in the tractor parade are still untraceable.
Another leader Ravinder Singh said that 122 farmers had been arrested by Delhi Police in connection with 14 of the 44 FIRs, adding that SKM will provide legal and financial aid to all the arrested farmers. The Morcha leaders claimed that “false” cases were being slapped on farmers charging them with serious offences like dacoity and attempt to murder to “harass” them. Singh said that the Morcha will provide Rs
Subramanian Swamy took to Twitter on Saturday to criticise the Centre’s treatment of the farmers’ agitation, reports Tribune Web Desk. The BJP MP said the farmers agitation may soon become an international issue as human rights groups plan to approach the International Labour Organisation of the United Nations. “The farmer agitation may soon become an international issue. Human rights groups plan to approach the International Labour Organisation, UN Body, in which India is a member, which could take it up. As Chairman of Labour Standards, I produced, in 1996, a three volume Report for Govt,” Swamy tweeted.
New Delhi, Feb 13 (IANS): The Delhi Police Crime Branch, probing the Red Fort violence on Republic Day, took the arrested accused Deep Sidhu and Iqbal Singh to Red Fort on Saturday to recreate the crime scene. The Crime Branch is studying the route taken by Sidhu and Iqbal to reach Red Fort when the violence broke out on January 26 during the farmers’ tractor rally. The Crime Branch is probing if it was part of a larger conspiracy.
For ty-five-year-old Iqbal Singh hails from Ludhiana. He, along with Punjabi actor-activist Deep Sidhu and others, was part of the tractor rally that changed course and created chaos in the national capital. His videos went viral on social media where he was purportedly heard threatening cops on duty and inciting protesters to go on a rampage. Following the violence, Delhi Police announced cash reward of Rs 1 lakh each for Deep Sidhu, Ju-
graj Singh, Gurjot Singh and Gurjant Singh, and Rs 50,000 each for Jagbir Singh, Buta Singh, Sukhdev Singh and Iqbal Singh for their alleged involvement in the violence that saw at least one person die and several injured, including policemen. Sidhu and Iqbal Singh are in police remand and the Crime Branch is probing all angles to the violence and also who else aided them on January 26 and sheltered them when they were on the run

FM is harmful for Indian economy: Adhir
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury
New Delhi, Feb 13 (PTI): The Congress on Saturday alleged that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was harmful for the economy of the country and had pulled down the economic indicators while profiting a few capitalists. Reacting to the FM’s reply to the Union Budget discussions in the Lok Sabha on Saturday, Congress leader in the Lower House Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also said that the FM, instead of answering queries, kept hurling “derogatory remarks at Rahul Gandhi”. “Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is harmful for the economy of the country. How does she explain Oxfam report revelations which said the lockdown made India’s billionaires 35 per cent richer, while 84 per cent of households’ support income suffered a loss and 1.7 lakh people lost their jobs every hour in April, 2020 alone,” Chowdhury said. The Congress leader
asked how does the FM explain that income increase for India’s top 100 billionaires since March 2020, which is enough to give each of the 13.8 crore poorest people a cheque of over Rs 94,000 each. “The finance minister’s misplaced priorities include tax concession for corporate in financial year 2019-20 that amounted over Rs 1.4 lakh crores. Instead of creating jobs, they used the money for trimming up their balance sheets,” alleged Chowdhury, asking how does she explain reducing the outlay for agriculture. He said the budget for agriculture had been reduced from Rs 1.54 lakh crore in the previous budget to 1.48 lakh crores in this budget, a cut of 6 per cent. “It has been reduced from 5.1 pc to 4.3 pc of overall budget. What could be the possible explanation for slashing the MGNREGA fund in her budget? The allocation to MGNREGA
has been cut from Rs 1.66 lakh crores this year to Rs 96,773 crores in 2021, a cut of around 42 per cent,” Chowdhury said, attacking the FM for petroleum subsidy which, he said, had hit everyone. The Congress leader said that instead of answering their queries, the FM “kept hurling derogatory remarks at Rahul Gandhi”. “This is the government which does not honour the leaders and workers of the opposition party. By riding roughshod over the opposition, they have been trampling each and every demand of our party,” said Chowdhury. Asked about whether Rahul Gandhi would visit the LAC if a related proposal of the parliamentary standing committee on defence goes through, Chowdhury said when the opposition wanted to visit Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370, they were not allowed. “When we sought that the government send an allparty delegation to J&K after the abrogation of Article 370 we were not allowed to go. But the government allowed European Union leaders under an orchestrated visit. Even later they kept sending ambassadors of other countries to Kashmir for picnics but did not allow their own MPs to go,” he said.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to “hand over” the entire agriculture business to his “two friends”. Addressing farmers at Rupangarh in Rajasthan, he said 40 per cent people of the country are stakeholders of the farming business. “It is the business of 40 per cent people, which includes farmers, small and medium businessmen, traders, labourers. Modi wants to give this entire business to his two friends. This is the objective of the farm laws,” he claimed but did not name anyone. “Modi said that he is giving options but the options are: hunger, unemployment and suicide,” he alleged. Gandhi, wearing a Rajasthani safa or turban, reached the rally venue driving a tractor with Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and state Congress chief Govind Singh Dotsra sitting with him on both sides.
New Delhi, Feb 13 (PTI): Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi saying he is becoming a “doomsday man” for India by constantly insulting constitutional functionaries and creating fake narratives on various issues. Replying to the general discussion on Budget in Lok Sabha, she said the former Congress chief was creating fake narratives but does not have patience to listen to replies on allegations levelled against the government. “We need to recognise these two tendencies of the Congress party. One is creating fake narratives and second, lack of belief in a democratically elected Parliamentary system. “In banks, you did phone banking and left huge NPAs. This is one tendency, create institutions and use them for ‘Hum Do Hamare Do’ and at the end
language, but when under Parliamentary procedure they have to respond to... they only shout and walk out.” She criticised the Congress for inconsistency in their approach in the two houses of Parliament. “The same party in Rajya Sabha takes part in Budget discussion and asks questions and listens answers... why that does not happen in Lok Sabha... why take different positions in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha... what is this,” she wondered.

Ram Sene to protest against Valentine’s Day
BENGALURU, FEB 13 (AGENCIES): Right wing outfit Shri Ram Sene on Saturday said it would counter Valentine’s day by observing ‘Mata-Pita’ pooja on February 14, reports The New Indian Express. The organisation would deploy its members in various parts of Karnataka, where there would be chances of ‘vulgarity’ in public places, in the name of Valentine’s day celebrations. “Every year we organise the ‘Mata-Pita’ pooja across the state. We would organise the event at 50 to 60 places,” the outfit chief Pramod Muthalik told PTI. The fringe outfit President said there will be volunteers of the organisations at the probable places such as pubs, bars, malls, ice cream parlours and parks to ensure that there is no vulgarity in public places. He, however, pointed out that the members of the outfit will not take law into their hands but would work in tandem with the police to prevent such incidents. In a press release, the Hubballi unit of Shri Ram Sena said, “The western culture is trying to attract the youth towards it, which has an adverse effect on our invaluable heritage and leads to unacceptable drugs, sex and love jihad. Valentine’s day is a clear example of it.”

Retorting to this, the Finance Minister said this expression fits on the Gandhi family. With regard to the second tendency of Congress, she said, “we will put allegations, use abusive

the GST…Gabbar Singh Tax… was brought and small businesses were hit,” Gandhi said in the farmers’ rally. “Farmers, labourers, traders are being sidelined and the path is being cleared for two-three businessmen. During the coronavirus lockdown, labourers requested the prime minister to give them tickets to go home but he did not yield to it and waived loans of Rs 1.5 lakh crore of the rich,” he alleged. Gandhi said it was his responsibility to tell the truth and it is for the people to listen or not to listen. “In February last year, I had said 10-15 times that Bharat Mata is going to suffer drastic losses due to coronavirus. Farmers, labourers and the poor are going to be badly hit but ‘press wale’ (media) said he is not a farmer, he is anti-national,” he said. Gandhi said he kept silence in Parliament as a mark of respect to 200 farmers who died during the agitation against the farm laws but not a single BJP MP stood for it.

Jaipur, Feb 13 (PTI): Continuing scathing attack against PM Narendra Modi over the farm laws on the second day of his visit to Rajasthan, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday alleged that the prime minister wants to “hand over” the entire agriculture business to his “two friends”. Gandhi addressed two farmers’ rallies at Rupangarh in Ajmer and Nagaur’s Makrana. He had addressed farmers’ rallies in Hanumangarh’s Pilibanga and Sri Ganganagar’s Padampur on the first day of his two-day Rajasthan trip on Friday. At the Rupangarh rally, Gandhi said 40 per cent people of the country are stakeholders in the farming business. “It is the business of 40 per cent people, which includes farmers, small and medium businessmen, traders and labourers. Narendra Modi wants to give this entire business to his two friends. This is the objective of the farm laws,” he claimed but did not name anyone. “Narendra Modi said he is giving options but the

At the end of Q3 2020, India’s 5G shipments stood at 1.7 million, a number which was projected to cross 4 million by the end of 2020. The key to higher adoption of 5G smartphones is bringing their prices below the Rs 20,000 (around $275) mark. “Nearly 89 per cent of all the smartphones shipped in India in January-November 2020 had a price lower than Rs 20,000. NEW DELHI, FEB 13 (IANS): Luxury car segment financiers - Foreign passenger vehicle NBFC Captives (FOC) - are likely to see a pick-up in growth next fiscal due to low base, said ICRA. The segment plays vital sales boosting financing role for the luxury car industry by offering low-cost credit and innovative credit models. It also plays an important role in inventory and long-term financing for dealerships, which supports the dealers’ financial flexibility owing to the relatively low sales volume of foreign OEMs in India. According to ICRA, the slowdown in PV segment along with Covid-induced disruption led FOCs credit contraction by 8 per cent year-on-year in FY20 which further dipped by 4 per cent YTD in H1 FY21. Besides, ICRA estimates showed that FOCs accounted for around 22 per cent of NBFC PV credit as on Sep 30, 2020. The relatively higher contraction in luxury car volumes compared to overall PV sales, the share of FOCs declined to 22 per cent of NBFC PV credit as on September 30, 2020 from 25 per cent as on March 31, 2019. “The challenging macroeconomic environment...led to a contraction in FOC credit in FY2020 and H1FY2021,” said Manushree Saggar, Vice President and Head Financial Sector Ratings, ICRA.

Trump didn’t incite mob: Lawyers Insurrection incitement charge against Trump a ‘monstrous lie’ WASHINGTON, FEB 13 (PTI): Donald Trump’s insurrection incitement charge is a “monstrous lie” and the impeachment proceedings against the former president a “politically motivated witch hunt” by the Democrats, his lawyers said as they presented evidence in the US Senate. Trump, a Republican, is accused of inciting riots in the US Capitol on January 6 which left five people, including a police officer, dead. Trump’s lawyers Bruce Castor, David Schoen and Michael van der Veen each took turns addressing the Senate members on Friday, day four of Trump’s impeachment trial, to describe Trump as a staunch supporter of law and order, not someone who incited the chaos at the Capitol. His attorneys had up to 16 hours over the course of two days to push back on House impeachment managers case that Trump should be convicted and barred from running for future office for inciting the attack on the Capitol to try to stop Joe Biden’s presidential election victory being certified. There is a complete lack of evidence on the article of impeachment against Donald Trump, his lawyers told the United States Senate.“We have a complete lack of evidence for the article of impeachment presented by the House managers,” Trump’s lawyer Castor said. The impeachment by the House, the case for which was laid out by the House managers in the Sen-
Draghi sworn in as Italy PM RO M E , FEB 13 (AGENC I E S ) : Former European Central Bank chief Mario Mario Draghi Draghi has been formally sworn in as Italy’s new prime minister. The swearing in comes after weeks of economic stability in Italy. Draghi is tasked with plotting Italy’s recovery from the pandemic. He must immediately set to work on plans for how to spend more than €200 billion in European Union funds aimed at rebuilding the recessionbound economy. Known as Super Mario for doing “whatever it takes” to save the eurozone, Draghi has put together a national unity government involving all but one of Italy’s political parties. He was sworn in by President Sergio Mattarella after the previous centre-left coalition under premier Giuseppe Conte collapsed. Italy has been severely impacted by the pandemic that hit almost a year ago.

ate during the last two days, was political. “Their goal is to eliminate a political opponent, to substitute their judgment for the will of the voters,” he said as he showed clips of various Democratic leaders. Castor said that the critical issue in this case is the very narrow issue that is charged against the 45th president. “That issue is did the 45th president engage in incitement of -- they continue to say -- insurrection. Clearly there was no insurrection,” he said. Trump’s lawyer van der Veen used his opening remarks to dispute the Democrats’ case that the former president had incited violence during his speech to supporters on January 6. Trump had made allegations of voter fraud and urged his supporters to converge at the Capitol building a short while before the riot broke out. “To claim that the president in any way wished, desired or encouraged lawless or violent behaviour is a preposterous and monstrous lie. In fact, the first two messages the president sent via Twitter once the incursion at the Capitol began were ‘Stay Peaceful’ and “No violence because we are the party of law and order,’” the lawyer said. “The article of impeachment now before the
Senate is an unjust and blatantly unconstitutional act of political vengeance,” Trump attorney van der Veen argued. “Like every other politically motivated witch hunt the left has engaged in over the past four years, this impeachment is completely divorced from the facts, the evidence and the interests of the American people,” he added. Citing reports from the FBI, the Department of Justice, and several former and present officials, Trump’s lawyers argued that the riots were pre-planned. Trump’s attorneys told the senators that the former president had every right to dispute his election loss to his Democratic rival and that Trump’s 70-minute speech just minutes before the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol did not amount to inciting the violence. Trump’s lawyers presented their case for nearly four hours. After this the Senators, who act a juror for the impeachment trial, began the question-andanswer sessions from both the sides. The 100-member Senate would vote on the impeachment trial after the closing arguments are made by the two sides. To impeach Trump, the Senate needs 67 votes, which the political
The fire has forced Afghanistan to shut down its electrical supply from Iran, leaving Herat in the dark, said Wahidullah Tawhidi, spokesman for the Ministry of Power Supply. Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported that following the request from Herat’s governor, Iranian “rescue forces and fire fighters are underway to extinguish the fire inside Afghanistan,” according to Mohsen Nejat, director-general of crisis management in Iran’s Khorasan Razavi province. Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency quoted truck drivers as saying more than 500 trucks carrying natural gas and fuel have been burnt so far. The fire spread to the Dogharoon customs facilities on the Iranian side and first responders — including the fire department, the Iranian army and border forces — were assisting in extinguishing the blaze, according to Iranian state television. Trucks carrying natural gas and fuel were directed to leave the scene. The Islam Qala border crossing is around 120 kilometres (75 miles) west of the city of Herat.
Strong quake hits Japan’s NE coast TOKYO, FEB 13 (AP): A strong earthquake hit off the coast of northeastern Japan late Saturday, shaking Fukushima, Miyagi and other areas, but there was no threat of a tsunami, officials said. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, which had meltdowns following a massive quake and tsunami 10 years ago, was checking to see whether there were any problems following the magnitude 7.1 quake. There were no immediate reports of irregularities from other nuclear
analysts said is a tall order for the Democrats. The Democrats have 50 members and they need the support of 17 of the Republican Senators. Several Republicans have said they do not believe an ex-president should be impeached, although ahead of the trial a Senate vote rejected that position. If Trump were convicted, the Senate could then vote to bar him from holding elected office again. Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives for the first time on December 18, 2019. The House adopted two articles of impeachment against Trump: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. However, the Senate where the Republicans had a majority then, acquitted him in February 2020 on both counts. According to US media reports, the current timeline makes it all the more likely that Trump’s historic second impeachment trial could be concluded as early as Saturday. After questions, there remains the option for managers to request a debate on witnesses followed by a four-hour window for closing arguments before the final vote on whether to convict Trump. Impeachment prosecutors contended on Thursday there is “clear and overwhelming” evidence that Trump incited insurrection by sending a mob of his supporters to the Capitol to confront lawmakers as they were certifying that he had lost the November 3 election to Democrat Biden. While wrapping up his presentation, lead impeachment manager Raskin told the 100 members of the Senate acting as jurors they should use “common sense on what happened here.”
Fuel tanker explosion along Afghan-Iran border H E R AT ( A F G H A N I STAN), FEB 13 (AP): A fuel tanker exploded Saturday at the Islam Qala crossing in Afghanistan’s western Herat province on the Iranian border, injuring at least seven people and causing a massive fire that consumed more than 500 trucks carrying natural gas and fuel, according to Afghan officials and Iranian state media. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the blast. Wahid Qatali, Herat’s provincial governor, said Afghan first responders did not have the means to put out the fire and had requested support from Iran in the form of fire fighting aircraft. “For the time being, we can’t even talk about the casualties,” Qatali told The Associated Press. The intensity of the flames meant ambulances were having trouble reaching the wounded or getting close to the site of the blast, said Mohammad Rafiq Shirzy, spokesman for the Herat regional hospital. Seven people injured by the fire have been admitted to the hospital in Herat so far, he said.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said that some 860,000 homes were without power as a result of the quake, according to Kato. Kato said there was no danger of a tsunami from the quake. He said that some trains in northeastern Japan had stopped running, and that other damage was still being checked. Video from pub-

EU calls on China to reverse ban on BBC channel BEIJING, FEB 13 (AP): The European Union on Saturday called on China to reverse its ban on the BBC World News television channel imposed in apparent retaliation for Britain’s pulling of the licence of state-owned Chinese broadcaster CGTN. The EU said in a statement that Beijing’s move further restricted “freedom of expression and access to information inside its borders,” and violated both the Chinese constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The statement also said that Hong Kong’s announcement that its public broadcaster would also stop carrying BBC broadcasts added to the “erosion of the rights and freedoms that is ongoing” in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory since the imposition last year of a sweeping new national security law.
Myanmar protests in 2nd week, with neither side backing down YANGON, FEB 13 (AP): Mass street demonstrations in Myanmar entered their second week Saturday, with neither protesters nor the military government they seek to unseat showing any signs of backing down from confrontations. Protesters in Yangon, the country’s biggest city, again congregated at Hleden intersection, a key crossroads from which groups fanned out to other points, including the embassies of the United States and China. They marched despite an order banning gatherings of five or more people. The U.S., especially after President Joe Biden announced sanctions against the military regime, is regarded as an ally in the protesters’ struggle against the February 1 coup. them keeping their grip on power. Demonstrations also resumed in Myanmar’s second-biggest city, Mandalay, with lawyers making up one large contingent. The military ousted the country’s leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and her government and prevented recently elected lawmakers from opening a new session of Parliament.
Suu Kyi and other senior members of her government and party remain in detention. The junta, led by Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, said it was forced to act because Suu Kyi’s government failed to properly investigate allegations of fraud in last year’s election, which her National League for Democracy party won in a landslide.

heard gunfire and saw vehicles including three-wheel tuk-tuks scatter before the heavy blast occurred on a key road near the presidential palace.
“I was at a gym close to where the blast occurred, but thanks to God we have heard the gunshots before the blast. And this alerted many people including myself and we fled from the area to take cover before the vehicle reached the area of the explosion,” said one witness, Dahir Osman. A police statement said there had been no deaths, only seven wounded in the blast which destroyed eight cars and nine tuk-tuks. However witnesses contradicted this. “My uncle was among the dead, I went there to collect his body and I saw another civilian who died in the blast as well,” said Suleiman Ali.

Was Stonehenge originally built in Wales? Lovebirds throng gift shops in Dimapur ahead of Valentine’s Day S A tonehenge was originally built in Wales, before the stone circle was dismantled and rebuilt 175 miles away in Wiltshire, researchers claim. It is already established that the 5,000-year-old monument in Salisbury contains bluestones brought from a Welsh hillside. However, new research suggests that they were recycled from a dismantled circle called Waun Mawn in the Preseli Hills in Pembrokeshire. Analysis of Waun Mawn reveals that it may be the oldest known stone circle in Britain, dating from about 3400BC, and that it was also one of the largest, with up to 50 standing stones. University of St Andrews experts uncovered the remains of Waun Mawn while filming for an upcoming BBC documentary, fronted by Professor Alice Roberts, who quipped that the discovery suggests Stonehenge ‘is a second-hand monument’. If it were still intact today, the Waun Mawn stone circle would be the third largest in Britain after Avebury in Wiltshire and Stanton Drew in Somerset. The long-dismantled stone circle was found in the area where the smaller ‘bluestones’ found at Stonehenge are known to have
come from. The team behind the discovery said there are key elements linking Stonehenge to the Welsh monument, one of the biggest stone circles ever found in Britain. They suggest its bluestones could have been moved as the ancient people of the Preseli region migrated, even taking their monuments with them, as a sign of their ancestral identity, and re-erecting them at Stonehenge, 175 miles away. And it could explain why the bluestones, thought to be the first monoliths erected at Stonehenge, were brought from so far away,
while most circles are constructed within a short distance of their quarries, the experts said. Archaeological investigations as part of the ‘Stones of Stonehenge’ research project, led by Professor Mike Parker Pearson of University College London, previously excavated two bluestone quarries in the Preseli Hills. The team used a technique called optically-stimulated luminescence dating to determine the age of the Welsh stone circles. One of the empty stone sockets at Waun Mawn has an unusual cross-section which matches one of the bluestones at Stonehenge,
and chippings in that hole are of the same rock type as the Stonehenge stone, said Dr Kinnaird study coauthor. Researchers were able to date the soils that infill the dismantled stone sockets with surprising results and found the stones were removed immediately prior to the known date of construction of Stonehenge 1 - at around 3000 BC. ‘It is the hidden information preserved in the soils that provides the chronology for the construction,’ said Kinnaird. They then looked at the dismantlement of the Waun Mawn stone circle and its date - which hap-
pened just before similar stones were put up at Stonehenge. She said throughout the efforts the archaeologists ‘were always up against it’ and that they suffered a terrible time trying to find evidence of a stone circle. ‘They were almost on the brink of giving up and then they looked at this particular place called Waun Mawn,’ said Roberts. The site had previously been described as ‘doubtful and insignificant’ by previous research teams, so it was a last ditch effort after years of failure. But ‘they decided that they were going to dig anyway and just see if they can find anything, and they found these ghosts of stone holes,’ said Roberts. She added: ‘And they were exactly the same diameter as the outer circle at Stonehenge. It’s just unbelievable stuff, unbelievable archaeology.’ Their discovery that the bluestones had been extracted before the first stage of Stonehenge was built prompted the team to re-investigate the nearby Waun Mawn stones to see if it was the site of a stone circle supplied by the quarry and moved. The decade of women supporting Jack Black joins cast of starother women, says Kate Winslet studded movie ‘Borderlands’

ctor Kate Winslet says Hollywood is working toward making women feel safe. “The thing that is shifting in ways that will absolutely be long lasting is how women’s voices are being received. There is a space that has been created for a younger generation that is going to be safe,” Winslet told The Hollywood Reporter while discussing the impact of #MeToo movement on their Actress Round table segment. She continued: “My daughter is 20, and she just came into the industry
about a year and a half ago. And what’s wonderful for me, as her mum, is just watching her have a courage of conviction and self-belief that is just unwavering, because she’s entering a time when we’re clearing the sh*t away from them, these girls.” “These girls are going to change the world, and they’re going to be strong, and they’re going to be powerful, and they’re going to be amazing. And that is because we’re getting all the bad stuff out of the way for them and all they will know is to use their voice
in positive, powerful ways, to lead with compassion, to be strong role models and friends. And that, to me, is the biggest thing that has shifted,” she added. The actor feels this time is all about women supporting women. “This is the decade of women championing and supporting other women without judgment. This is happening right now, and that has come as a result of the mass united swell that has emerged from #MeToo. We’ve all come together, everyone is holding hands and walking in the same direction,” she said. “For me, that is the single most exciting thing that is coming out of the awfulness of the past five years and those extraordinary women coming forward and sharing their painful, awful stories, and the horrendous Harvey Weinstein. The time now is about leading in a different way. Young women being able to lead with courage – in a way that I feel I certainly didn’t have, that sense of courage and companionship with my peers, in a way that I think #MeToo has done for this generation of women,” she added. Aus Open: Nadal, Barty reach fourth round
Melbourne, Feb 13 (Agencies/PTI): Rafael Nadal beat an impressive Cameron Norrie to reach the Australian Open fourth round and end British interest in the singles competition.Spanish second seed Nadal was able to see off his spirited 69th-ranked opponent 7-5 6-2 7-5. In women’s singles, World number one Ash Barty overcame Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-2 6-4 overat an empty Margaret Court Arena on Saturday. Playing on an empty Rod Laver Arena after Melbourne entered lockdown, Nadal was not at his rhythmic best but he held off a confident-looking Norrie. The 20-time Grand Slam champion will play Italy’s Fabio Fognini next. Norrie claimed the first break of the match and hung in well against Nadal, but there was no stopping the
Spaniard when he upped his tempo. Nadal showed occasional hints on serve of a back problem that has bothered him since his arrival in Australia but he moved and hit freely. Nadal has yet to drop a set in Melbourne despite being, by his own admission, not near his best. Norrie played well, saving six of the 12 break points he faced, but although he would get to 0-30 on the Nadal serve he could not find a way through. His early break was cancelled out straight away by Nadal and a tight first set ended with a long forehand from the British number three. He was able to hang in with Nadal on the long rallies, saving break points to start the second and third set, but Nadal’s extra pace, particularly on the forehand, broke through his defences.

New Delhi, Feb 13 (Agencies): Boxing heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua revealed that he is keen on working with WWE in the near future. Speaking on the Alternative Sport Show, the current WBO, IBF and WBA (Super) Heavyweight Boxing Champion was asked if he was a better UFC fighter or WWE Superstar, The Indian Express reported. “That’s a great question,” Joshua said. “I’m gonna do WWE because that’s what Muhammad Ali done, so I’m gonna do WWE.” If Joshua does make it to the four-square ring, he wouldn’t be the first. His future opponent Tyson Fury defeated Braun Strowman by count-out at WWE Crown Jewel 2019 and former Heavyweight Boxing Champion Mike Tyson is a WWE Hall Of Famer, with several special appearances in the company over the years. For the uninitiated, Ali didn’t actually have a match with WWE. Instead, he was one of the many A-list names brought in to help promote the first WrestleMania – where Ali served as one of two special guest referees in the Hulk Hogan & Mr. T vs. Roddy Piper & Paul Orndorff main event of that inaugural Showcase of the Immortals event.

er Kiran Kumar Limbu who won the player of the match award for his performance in goal which gave his team a fifth clean sheet in eight matches. RoundGlass Punjab made just one change from their 2-1 victory over the Indian Arrows as Mohammed Irshad started ahead of Suranjit Singh. Chennai City FC also made a change from their 2-1 win over NEROCA FC as head coach Satyasagara
picked Lijo Francis over Umasankar. The game opened with fast end-to-end football, but both sides were unable to get their efforts on target. The earliest opening came in the eighth minute for Chennai City as Iqbal saw Punjab custodian Kiran Kumar off his line. However, his shot was blocked by the Punjab defence. The game died down in the next couple of minutes due to an early injury to
Iqbal, forcing Satyasagara to change him with Elvedin Skrijelj. Punjab kept pushing and reaped rewards in the 43rd minute. Souvik Das’s cross found Diawara just outside the six-yard box. The Senegalese held off a challenge from Tarif Akhand and volleyed his effort past a stranded Kabir Toufik. Chennai City sought an immediate reply through a free-kick. Substitute Elvedin Skrijelj’s cross from a distance was met by Demir Avdic, who yet again failed to hit the target. As a result, RoundGlass Punjab went into half-time with a 1-0 lead. Punjab then got their second goal late in the second half. They came close again in the 84th minute. Papa Diawara latched on to Beitia’s corner, but his header whiskered over the goal. It did not matter though as the Punjab team scored four minutes later. Aphaoba Singh broke on the counter, latching on to a long pass from Beitia, before sending in a dipping shot. Toufik saved the shot but sent the rebound into the path of substitute Rupert Nongrum, who made sure he remained onside and duly put the ball into an empty net.

2nd Test: Rohit’s 161 takes India to 300/6
Rohit Sharma plays a shot during the 1st day of the second cricket test match between India and England, Saturday. (BCCI/PTI)
C h e n na i , F e b 1 3 (IANS): Rohit Sharma scored his seventh Test century -- his first one year and after eight innings -- to help India reach the 300 for six wickets on the first day of the second Test against England at the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium here on Saturday. Ajinkya Rahene scored 67 while Rishabh Pant was batting on 33 at close. The other unbeaten
batsman was debutant Axar Patel, who was on five, on a pitch that had started assisting spin from the first hour of the day. Sharma’s counter-attacking 161 (off 231 balls, 18x4s, 2x6s) and his 162run partnership with Rahane (149 balls, 9x4s) helped India recover following a poor start after captain Virat Kohli won the toss and chose to bat. Later in the day, Pant (56 balls, 5x4s, 1x6) put
up a 35-run stand with R. Ashwin (13). Axar has so far played seven balls so far and hit one boundary. India, who lost three wickets in the first session, didn’t lose any in the second session and both Sharma and Rahane handled the England bowlers with ease. Sharma, who was struggling to get a big score since his return to Test cricket last month, took the attack to the English bowl-

ers in a confident manner. The 33-year-old batsman raced to 80 off 78 deliveries (13x4s, 1x6) to take India to 106 for three wickets at lunch despite India losing three wickets. On a pitch that aided turn early on, England introduced left-arm spinner Jack Leach as early as the eighth over of the match. Sharma, however, looked in control and put India in the driver’s seat before a couple of wickets late in the first session gave Joe Root’s team some relief. India had lost Shubman Gill early with the team still to open its account. But then Sharma and No.3 Cheteshwar Pujara (21) shared an 85-run partnership for the second wicket to help India move into a commanding position. The partnership was dominated by Sharma as he unleashed his strokes. However, just as they looked like they were taking the game away from England, the spinners got into action. Leach got rid of Pujara having him caught at slip by Ben Stokes. Soon after, off-spinner Moeen Ali, who was prov-
ing expensive, spun one back in through the gap between Kohli’s bat and pad to dismiss him for a duck and reduce India to 86 for three. India had won the toss and elected to bat. The hosts made three changes in the XI that lost the first Test by 227 runs in the four-Test series. They rested pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah and brought in Mohammed Siraj. Leftarm spinner Patel and Chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav replaced left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem and off-spinner Washington Sundar, respectively. For England, pace bowler Stuart Broad came in for James Anderson, Olly Stone replaced the injured Jofra Archer and picked the wicket of Gill. Off-spinning all-rounder Ali replaced Dom Bess while Ben Foakes replaced Jos Buttler who has gone back to England. Alisson at fault again as Leicester stun Liverpool
Harvey Barnes broke to make it 3-1 in the 85th minute after Liverpool gave the ball away in the middle of the pitch.
London, Feb 13 (Reuters): An error by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson helped Leicester come from behind to earn a 3-1 win on Saturday, with the champions losing three successive Premier League games for the first time since November 2014, when they were managed by Brendan Rodgers. Liverpool were again forced into a defensive reshuffle due to Fabinho’s injury, with January loan signing Ozan Kabak handed his debut. The 20-year-old’s slip let Jamie Vardy in in the first half, only for the Leicester striker to hit the crossbar. It was Trent Alexander-
Arnold’s turn to hit the woodwork from a free-kick just after the interval before Mohamed Salah finally broke the deadlock in the 68th minute after being set up by a superb Roberto Firmino backward flick. After VAR had overturned a penalty awarded to Leicester, James Maddison equalised from a free-kick, before Alisson, who made two glaring errors in Liverpool’s loss to Manchester City last weekend, cost his side again. The Brazilian came flying out of his goal to meet a long ball over the top but collided with Kabak and allowed Vardy in to
score in the 81st minute. Harvey Barnes made sure of the win four minutes later to complete another miserable afternoon for Liverpool. AFP adds: While Klopp would privately concede that Liverpool won’t win the title, it is their top four place that he will be more worried about after the Reds were left with just two wins from their last 10 league games. They could be as low as sixth place by Monday if Chelsea and West Ham win their games in hand. Leicester climbed above Manchester United into second place after feasting on Liverpool’s problems.
ISL: FC Goa stun Chennaiyin with late draw KOCHI, Feb 13 (Agencies): FC Goa are well and truly the comeback kings of the Indian Super League and they showed it yet again in their 2-2 draw against Chennaiyin FC at the GMC Stadium, Bambolim on Saturday. Trailing 2-1 with two minutes of injury time left, Ishan Pandita struck the winner to snatch a hard-earned point, The Indian Express. Jakub Sylvester (13) and LallianzualaChhangte (60) scored for Chennaiyin but Igor Angulo (19) and Pandita (90+3) helped the Gaurs script yet another fightback. The point helps Goa jump to third in the table while Chennaiyin remains stranded at eighth in the table. This game has always produced goals and this game was an open, expansive and end to end affair. Goa started on a shaky note with their keeper Dheeraj Singh looking uncomfortable every time a back pass came his way. It is evident that the young keeper is still getting accustomed to Juan Ferrando’s style
of play. He almost handed Chennaiyin a gift of a goal when his miscued clearance fell to Manuel Lanzarote but the Spaniard couldn’t convert. Chennaiyin went onto take the lead in the 13th minute thanks to some brilliant work from Jakub. The Slovakian forward managed to weave his way inside the box and managed to skip past a host of Goa defenders before poking the ball past Dheeraj. The celebrations were muted for a team that has struggled to score goals this season which has cost them dearly this season. Goa managed to roar back into the game when they won a penalty in the 17th minute. A l ex a n d e r Je s u r a j bombed down the right flank and tried to pick out Angulo in the middle with a cross. The ball was handled by Chennaiyin skipper Eli Sabia inside the box. Angulo stepped up and slammed it past Vishal Kaith but the referee ordered a re-take due to infringement into the box while the penalty was taken. The Spaniard
was ice cool with his re-take and managed to beat Kaith a second time to score his 12th goal of the season and more importantly got his team back into the contest. The game ebbed and flowed and both teams had a series of chances with Jakub hitting the post being the most notable one as the two teams went into half-time all square. The second half followed a similar story and it was Chennaiyin who took the lead again in

New Delhi, Feb 13 (PTI): Para-athletes Navdeep and Arvind secured quotas for the upcoming Tokyo Paralympics as India’s gold medal tally swelled to nine after the third day of competitions at the 12th Fazza International World Para Athletics Grand Prix. Overall, India has claimed 17 medals including nine gold, with four of them coming on Friday. The day was lit up by brilliant shows by Indian men’s javelin throwers — reigning world champion Sandeep Chaudhary (F44), Ajeet Singh (F46) and Navdeep (F41) — who were later joined by Pranav Prashant Desai with a yellow metal in men’s 200m F64. However, world champion javelin thrower Sundar Singh Gurjar (F46) had to settle for a bronze. Arvind attained the Minimum Qualification Standard with a distance of 14.05m in men’s shot put final F35/36 to book a place in the Tokyo Paralym-
pics. He finished fifth in the event. Navdeep, whose first international event was the 2017 Asian Youth Para Games, produced a brilliant throw of 43.58m in his third attempt to take the gold in men’s javelin F41 event and secure a quote for the next Paralympic Games. UAE’s Anas Alhosani (6.96m) ended second. “I felt confident with my throw today. My first throw wasn’t very good, but then I tried to focus and got a good throw. Sandeep bhaiya and Navdeep Sir have been helping me with my technique at JN Stadium in New Delhi,” said Navdeep. “I am very happy to also secure a quota. I want to win a medal at the Tokyo Paralympic now,” he added. In F41 classification, athletes with short stature compete while the F35/36 is for those who are more affected in the legs than the arms, but may also have significant co-ordination
impairment of the nonthrowing arm. In men’s javelin 38/ F42/ F44/ 63/ 64, Chaudhary hurled the javelin to a distance of 61.22 metres to win gold, though it was much less than his world record effort of 66.18m at the Dubai 2019 Worlds at the same ground. He was better than Columbia’s Luis Fernan Lucumi Villegas (54.95m), who set a new American record, and Chaminda Hetti Arachchige of Sri Lanka (56.34m). “It’s a nice feeling to return to one of my favourite grounds. My body felt good to compete after a long time. But I was hoping to get my personal best today. Nevertheless, to open the season with over 61m distance is not bad,” Chaudhary said. “In the coming months, it will be more about following the process and staying in shape before we start our final preparation for the Tokyo 2020,” added Chaudhary.
