NEW DELHI, FEB 6 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Rajya Sabha on Thursday rejected Opposition’s claims that Northeast was burning and said that in reality, the region has “unprecedented peace”. He said that the blockades have been lifted and the region has become a “constructive contributor” to India’s success story. Delivering the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address, Modi said, “Ghulam Nabi Azad said Northeast is burning. If it was burning, then the first thing you would have done is to send a delegation of your MPs there and for sure conducted a press conference. I think his memory is restricted before 2014 and that’s why I would like to update that Northeast is full of peace and is a prime

member of India’s road to development.” “People in NE now do not feel that Delhi is a distant place. Now the government is at their door step...” he said. He added, “For 40-50 years, violent protests and blockades were going on in the region. Today, these protests have stopped and we’re moving ahead together.” Modi said his government worked on providing electricity, railway connectivity, mobile connectivity and various other aspects of development of the region. Modi further said the government had taken decisive action to help the Bru people of Mizoram, whereas state governments of the past had indulged in vote-bank politics. He said, “The problem of Bru-Reang people had been persisting for about 25-30 years. About

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday defended the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Population Register (NPR) while discussing the motion of thanks to President’s address in Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Modi launched a blistering attack on opposition parties on their attempt to “misguide and misinform” the nation on Citizenship Amendment Act, National Population Register and Article 370. Modi said that the Census and NPR were “normal administrative processes” which have been carried out previously as well. His key reasoning was that tools like NPR help improve reach and implementation of government schemes. He said that information like language spoken by parents were key indicators for setting up schools based on linguistic patterns. (Full story on p-7)

Asks Lokayukta to take suo moto notice DIMAPUR, FEB 6 (NPN): While expressing appreciation to Nagaland Lokayukta for taking up corrupt practises of illegal appointments in the Tourism department, Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum (NPRAAF) reiterated that unless the cases were taken to their logical conclusion, the efforts would end up as only being “sensational news for nothing.” In a statement, information and publicity wing of NPRAAF also demanded that the Lokayukta take suo moto notice of its press release with regard to appointments of Grade III / Grade IV staff of the PWD as Tourist Officers by flouting service rules and exten-

Republican Senator Mitt Romney, a bitter critic of Trump and the party’s presidential nominee in 2012, voted against the president on the first charge, but followed the party line on the second article of impeachment.

dent Joe Biden, a potential Democratic rival in the 2020 presidential election, using nearly USD 400 million in military aid as leverage. Though Trump, 73, has been acquitted, he will become the first impeached president to seek re-election. A two-thirds majority vote was needed to remove Trump, which was always going to be a long shot in

a 100-member Senate controlled by his Republican Party with 53 seats. “For now, the impeachment of Mr. Trump appears to have evenly divided the nation,” The New York Times reported. “The outcome represented a political triumph for the White House and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell...,” The Washington Post noted.

He, however, expressed concern over the diminishing number of farmers and the increasing trend of rural people migrating to the urban areas. Reminding the central government’s vision to double farmers’ income by 2022, Yanthan said that the centre was coming with refrigerated facility in the fast moving train as well as in the airlines. Yanthan appealed to North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi) to continue to extend financial assistance to the Hortipeneurs who were found viable and feasible. Meanwhile, the advisor cautioned the presence of non-Naga middlemen in marketing channels who take away major chunk of benefits that were supposed

to go to Naga farmers. In his keynote address, commissioner and secretary, Y Kikheto Sema, said that since traditional system of farming was not sustainable the department encourages farmers to take up horticulture crops that were sustainable, ecologically friendly and economically viable. Sema advised the entrepreneurs and farmers to learn how to manage their business within the state first and gradually focus beyond the state. Maintaining that Nagaland has less scope for large and medium scale industries, he said the main scope was agro-based industries, adding that massive employment opportunity can be created through horticulture industry. NPRAAF alleges illegal appointments sion of deputation. NPRAAF alleged that the appointments were made under political pressure and for which the Tourism department’s productivity suffered. It maintained that the department should appoint candidates having tourism subject as tourist officers through NPSC. In this regard, NPRAAF cited the case of a serving Section Officer (in Sl.No.2) who was allegedly appointed as Tourist Officer (TO) for a period of one year on December 12,2007 after the Model Code of Conduct came into effect between DecemberFebruary 2008. It claimed that the officer (TO) was then absorbed as assistant director on January 2, 2008 as per the incumbency list of TOs to be up-graded post to assistant director within a week after MCC came into effect. NPRAAF deemed the appointment as illegal and

Senate acquits President Trump of all impeachment charges WASHINGTON, FEB 6 (PTI): The Republican-controlled Senate has acquitted Donald Trump in his highprofile impeachment trial, giving the US President a major political victory in an election year but not before bitterly dividing the country and costing millions of dollars to the tax payers. T h e S e n a t e vo t e d Wednesday 52-48 to acquit Trump of abuse of power and 53-47 to absolve him of obstruction of Congress, the two charges he faced. The vote along party lines foiled the Democratic Party’s determined bid to overthrow Trump ahead of the November 3 presidential election. The Democratic-led House of Representatives approved the articles of impeachment on December 18 after charging Trump with pressuring Ukraine to smear former US vice presi-

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he and the Republicans had been put through a “terrible ordeal” by some very dishonest and corrupt people during the impeachment. Addressing the religious believers at the 68th Annual National Prayer Breakfast, Trump referred to the impeachment and said that every possible attempt was made to hurt the nation. Trump said he and the Republicans had been put through a “terrible ordeal

by some very dishonest and corrupt people”. “I don’t like people who use their faith as justification for doing what they know is wrong. Nor do I like people who say, ‘I pray for you,’ when they know that’s not so,” Trump said. “They have done everything possible to destroy us, and by so doing, very badly hurt our nation. They know what they are doing is wrong, but they put themselves far ahead of our great country,” he said. During his address, Trump said that he has taken historic action to defend religious liberty, including the Constitutional right to pray in public schools. “At every stage of our nation’s long march for civil rights was inspired, sustained and uplifted by faith, prayer and devotion of religious believers,” Trump said.

violation of the People’s Representation Act 1951. NPRAAF also cited the case of Sl. No.3 whose service was allegedly extended by an order of the Governor of Nagaland vide order dated December 16, 2018. It alleged that the officer’s name was included in the incumbency list of TOs to be upgraded to assistant director/Sr. Tourist Officer who was appointed and absorbed on June 6, 2006 though the officer was a graduate teacher on deputation for one (1) year as per the notification order dated December 28, 2007 for a post that should have been recruited through NPSC. NPRAAF claimed that Sl.No.2 was a Section Officer (Mohurrir) equivalent to a peon and Sl.No.3 was a graduate teacher who was appointed then absorbed in the department after cabinet approval on August 5, 2010. NPRAAF said the ef-

fective date of appointment was mentioned as August 5,2010 although both were appointed and absorbed on January 2,2008 and June 2,2006 respectively to the rank of assistant directors. It also cited another case of Sl.N0.5 who was allegedly appointed and regularised on September 13,2010 without due sanction from the P&AR department and against service rules. NPRAAF said it was mandatory to obtain NoC from the parent department before absorption in another department and only after clearance from the P&AR department. However, NPRAAF maintained all rules were flouted in the above cases. It wondered whether the departments are to follow service rules or cabinet rules when the government is supposed to follow its own rules instead of flouting them. (Cont’d on p-8)

No religious divisions, people pray together at Shaheen Bagh NEW DELHI, FEB 6 (AGENCIES): Amid ongoing protest at Shaheen Bagh against the Citizenship Amendment Act, people from all religions offered prayers here Thursday. The protest in South Delhi’s Pul Prahladpur entered 53rd day on February 6. The agitation has been thrusted by political parties into a poll issue. The event was aimed to end the atmosphere of “fear and violence” that is prevailing in the country and to send out a message of communal solidarity. People from all religions-- Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism and Christianity-- participated in the event. Sultan Sheikh, a Muslim, was dressed as a Sikh man. “Our Prime Minister talks about recognising someone from the attire. I want him to recognise to

which religion I belong,” he said, adding that don’t try to divide our country. Sant Yuvraj, a follower of Hinduism, said: “We are doing this for the unity and solidarity of the country. All religions are united here. No one should consider Shaheen Bagh as a demonstration of Muslims. Sikh people are chanting Gurbani here while Christians are reading Bible along with Muslims who are reading “aayats” from Quran and I am performing a “havan” as a Hindu sant. Even this “havan” has been organised by all people irrespective of their religion”. Alexander Fleming, a Christian, said: “This event doesn’t belong to any political party, and the Citizenship Amendment Act introduced by the government is against the Muslims”. K Y M C
