Demand for solution: 6-hr Statewide bandh on Jan 14 Cong accuses BJP of trying to repeal Art 371 (A)
Staff ReporterDIMAPUR, JAN 12
(NPN): Nagaland People’s Action Committee (NPAC) formed last year by apex tribe bodies and CSOs held a three-hour long deliberation at Hotel Saramati Thursday over demand for solution and finally resolved to call for a 6-hour bandh on January 14 from 6 a.m. to 12 noon.
The bandh is to express resentment against “inordinate delay in delivering the long-awaited Naga political solution as promised by the Government of India”.
The meeting, attended by representatives of 14 Naga tribes of Nagaland, Nagaland Tribe Council, Nagaland GB Federation, Central Nagaland Tribes Council, ACAUT Nagaland, Ex-Parliamentarians’ Association of Nagaland, Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Senior Citizens’ Association Nagaland, political parties and other organisations, insisted on a solution before election.
However, the NPAC call for bandh has been opposed by the Angami Public Organisation (APO) which justified it on the ground that NPAC was not authorised to issue any directive on apex tribe bodies.
The stand of the APO in opposing the bandh call serves to reflect the problem of ‘accommodation’ and ‘unity’ among the tribes especially after tribe alliances have turned themselves into entities.
One member of those who took part in the deliberations said that notwith-
PAN card as single business ID likely to get legal backing
NEW DELHI, JAN 12
(AGENCIES): The upcoming Budget 2023 is likely to roll out a legal and operational framework for adopting the permanent account number (PAN) as a single business identification. This will apply to all businesses securing approvals, a senior finance ministry official informed Business Standard.
At present, nearly 20 different identifiers exist at both the state and central levels and these are Goods and Services Tax Identification Number, Taxpayer Identification Number, Tax Deduction Account Number, Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, Corporate Identification Number and so on.
s tanding the reasons for objection, to many it will be a clear case of wanting solution or not wanting solution as the bandh was just a symbolic action for registering resentment.
Talking to media person after the meeting, NPAC convener Theja Therieh said the bandh was called to convey “democratic resentment” to Election Commission of India (ECI) team headed by chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar that would arrive in the State to review poll preparedness for the forthcoming Assembly election.
He clarified that the decision was not taken by NPAC alone, but by all members representing the tribal hohos and CSOs. He explained that NPAC was a committee that has been endorsed and empowered by all Naga tribes and organisations to pursue early solution, and thus maintained that it would stand for solution and not back down.
Therieh said every apex tribal hoho and CSO had categorically made their stand clear that everyone was for a solution and not election. He said the common refrain from people was
“It is now or never, enough is enough.”
Therieh said the demand for solution before election was a consensus decision among primary stake holders and urged the Central government to heed to the voice of people and take the peace process to its logical conclusion and deliver solution.
He emphasised that the deciding moment had come for Nagas to take a call and urge the Centre to deliver what had been promised. He pointed out that the Nagas had made enough representations to the Centre, but lamented that there had been no positive response yet.
Therieh stressed “Nothing can happen without the knowledge of the people. People will decide whatever is our future, because this is about our future generations.”
He questioned whether 26 years of negotiations were not enough? “If there is no political will, another 50 years of negotiation will not be enough,” he cautioned. He claimed that the people’s opinion today was that if negotiations could not yield any result, then it should be

While maintaining that all Nagas were for early solution to the vexed Naga political issue, he reminded that the 14 apex tribal hohos had already issued a statement in this regard. Therefore, if the tribe bodies do not heed to their directives, it should not be taken otherwise, APO president stated.

Mizoram’s Champai is very close to the rebel camp in Myanmar where the country’s Junta army is reportedly conducting a crackdown.

most powerful ethnic insurgent groups in the neighbouring country.

Jan 14 bandh reflection of people’s anger: WC Publication of criminal background of candidates must: EC
DIMAPUR, JAN 12 (NPN):
Working Committee (WC), of Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) said the January 14 proposed State bandh called by Nagaland People’s Action Committee (NPAC), a representative all apex Naga civil societies, was another reflection the people’s resentment against Central government’s inordinate delay in delivering a negotiated political solution .
In a statement, WC, NNPGs pointed out that the real stakeholders of IndoNaga peace process – Naga people irrespective of tribes, political colour, party affiliation or profession – had once again decided to shut down
Nagaland to remind the Central political leadership to fulfil its commitment to them.
WC also termed this as a mighty slap on the State government for its positive words on air and treacherous actions on the ground.
It claimed that negotiations between the centre and Naga negotiators had successfully concluded and that the people wanted an honourable and acceptable political solution based on this. WC stated that it believed that all Nagas – in villages and towns, in Nagaland and outside – had a responsibility to respond to the call of NPAC for a shutdown. The committee pointed out
that January 14 was a day to reclaim the moral, spiritual, democratic, social, political and historical rights through collective conscience.
According to the committee, these few hours would be a firm democratic nudge to the Central government to allow the voice of sanity prevail over imposters’ whispers and heed to the demand for political solution and not election.
“Anti-Naga solution elements may oppose the shutdown or remain unresponsive to the clarion call but Nagas must ignore those in political slumber or pretending to be asleep,” the statement added.
AGARTALA, JAN 12 (AGENCIES): Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said on Thursday that the Election Commission has made it mandatory for all political parties and candidates to publish criminal antecedents of their candidates at least three times in newspapers, television channels, and on their websites. SAPO flays dumping dead body under its jurisdiction
DIMAPUR, JAN 12
(NPN): Southern Angami Public Organisation (SAPO) has condemned the dumping of a dead body by murderer in its jurisdiction and the alleged threat on Southern Angamis by editor of Imphal Free Press (IFP) on January 10.
SAPO president Tepul Hopovi and general secretary Swelul Pucho in a press release said the body of one Yanglem Priyobatra Singh (46) reportedly murdered by one Heisnam James Singh (31) was dumped at Viswema village in Southern Angami area.
They said the accused was arrested on Decem -
ber 30, 2022 and the body was retrieved on January 7, 2023 jointly by police forces of Manipur and Nagaland. SPAO termed the act as a deliberate attempt to blame and malign the good name of Southern Angamis, especially in the wake of Kezoltsa issue.
SPAO also accused editor of IPF having threatened in his editorial that the “Southern Angamis Southern Angamis must be taught a lesson once for all” without any knowing anything about the matter. They said the Southern Angamis were shocked that such unethical and provocative threats were being served to
the community by a media house based in Manipur and condemned the statement, besides warning him not to add more fuel into the already burning fire.
SAPO further accused Manipur government of conniving with Mao Council and continuing to place armed personnel and imposing Section 144 CrPC in the disputed Kezoltsa in spite of SAPO calling for vacating the area in order to pave way for free and fair dialogue to resolve the issue peacefully and traditionally.
They pointed out that this was the reason why SAPO had resorted to restricting the movement of
Mao people in its jurisdiction. They reiterated that the organisation would lift restriction on Maos as soon as Mao Council and Manipur government removed the armed security personnel from Kezoltsa so that the disputed area could be resolved traditionally without any interference from alien influences and threats.
SAPO claimed that Angami Nagas, by virtue of being located at the State Capital and at the foothills around Dimapur with other Nagaland tribes, had been showing magnanimity in accommodating others from within and outside the State.
Kumar said that people must know the background of candidates before the polls. Anyone including the voter can lodge complaint to the commission through the cVIGIL app launched by the poll panel.
“Through the cVIGIL app the Commission deals with any complaint on a fast-track basis within 100 minutes. The cVIGIL is an innovative mobile application for citizens to report about the violation of Model Code of Conduct and expenditure during the elections. The ‘cVIGIL’ stands for Vigilant Citizen and emphasises the proactive and responsible role

IMPHAL, JAN 12: Students of GM Women College, Imphal on Thursday joined the chorus demanding resignation of education minister Th Basantakumar.
Prominent student bodies like MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK, AIMS etc. have been demanding resignation of the “irresponsible” education minister over the failure to convert Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) into a full-fledged university.
The DM University was set up as a cluster university under The Dhanamanjuri University Act, 2017 which came into force on April 6, 2018 through a notification in Manipur Gazette published by the Department of Higher and Technical Education.
Failure to address their long pending demand, the student bodies -MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK and AIMS – recently demanded resignation of state education minister Th Basantakumar and commissioner of higher and technical education Gyan Prakash.
The education minister and commissioner should resign on moral grounds, the students who staged a protest at DMU campus in Imphal on Wednesday had demanded.
“Resign irresponsible education minister” one of

Talking to reporters, Rashewori Meihoubam, social and cultural secretary of GM Women College Students’ Union demanded that the education minister must resign on moral grounds.
“There is not a single teacher approved by the UGC in the university. Besides, pending the bifurcation of the university from the higher and technical education department, the university is yet to be recognized by the UGC,” she
said. The student bodies alleged that the university was yet to be qualified for the acquisition of 12 (B) status of UGC as per the provisions of UGC 1956 Regulation. As a result, the university could not acquire funds from the UGC for overall development support. Moreover, the JRF holders, NET qualified and non-NET PhD research scholars were denied their rightful access to scholarships and relevant stipends, the student bodies lamented.

Hitting out at the erstwhile communist regime, which the BJP had defeated in 2018 to seize power, Nadda said the state had long faced neglect under the CPI(M) rule, but the current dispensation is making all possible efforts to build ‘Ek Tripura Shestha Tripura’ and ‘Atmanirbhor Tripura’.
“Tripura regularly witnessed incidents of rape, bandh, extortion and other corrupt activities when the communists ruled the state. All these menaces were removed when the BJP came to power. Now, growth (vikash) has taken the front seat,” he asserted.
The BJP chief also claimed that no political murder was committed in the state under the BJP rule.
He appealed to people to back the saffron party again for the development process to continue.

“The country is moving fast on the path of selfreliance under the leadership of Modiji, who is the face of new India. Army launches mixed martial arts for soldiers
NEW DELHI, JAN 12 (AGENCIES): With a focus on offensive assault training and the ability to counter sharp-edged weapons, the Indian Army has launched a unique and standardised mixed martial arts (MMA) programme for its soldiers.
“The army has introduced Army Martial Arts Routine or AMAR for which all our personnel will undergo training. This will help them not just physically, but also mentally,” Army chief General Manoj Pande said Thursday.
Sources in the defence establishment said that the mixed martial arts training routine would also help soldiers deter improvised weapons.
Until now, they said, there was neither a fixed routine for martial arts in the army, nor a specific programme at regiment centres either. However, a few regiments such as Assam, Naga, and Gorkha specialise in their own training of martial arts.
The army decided to introduce this routine to deal with the changing nature of war and prepare the force for all forms of unarmed combat, including hand-to-hand.
Specifically, the AMAR programme will train soldiers in basic and advanced techniques and manoeuvres of mixed martial arts.
Bird flu outbreak in Kerala, 1800 birds dead
KOZHIKODE (KERALA), JAN 12 (PTI): A bird flu outbreak has been reported in a state-run poultry farm in Kozhikode district of Kerala as around 1,800 chickens have died of the infection, official sources said.
The presence of H5N1 variant, which has an additional proliferative capacity, was confirmed among the poultry in the local farm managed by the district panchayat here on Wednesday, the sources said.
J Chinchu Rani, Kerala Minister for Animal Husbandry, gave instructions to take urgent preventive measures as per the Centre’s guidelines and protocol in this regard, they said.
As initial tests indicated the outbreak of bird flu, the samples were sent to the high security lab in Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) for accurate diagnosis which confirmed the avian influenza, a government statement said.
There were over 5,000 chickens in the farm and of them 1,800 died so far due to the infection.

Situation along Northern border stable but unpredictable: Army
NEW DELHI, JAN 12 (PTI): The situation along the frontier with China is “stabl e” but “unpredictable” and Indian troops are adequately deployed to deal with any contingency, Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande said on Thursday.
At a press conference ahead of the Army Day, Gen Pande also said that the troops deployed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) have been able to maintain a robust posture to defeat any evil design of the adversary with a firm and resolute manner.
The situation is stable and under control, but un-
substandard medical products are those that fail to meet quality standards or specifications and are therefore “out of specification.”
“The two products are AMBRONOL syrup and DOK-1 Max syrup. The stated manufacturer of both products is MARION BIOTECH PVT. LTD, (Uttar Pradesh, India). To date, the stated manufacturer has not provided guarantees to WHO on the safety and quality of these products,” the WHO stated.
“Laboratory analysis of samples of both products, undertaken by national quality control laboratories of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan found both products contained unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and/or ethylene glycol as contaminants,” it said.
The global health body said that diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol are toxic to humans when consumed and can prove fatal.
Cong slams VP’s Kesavananda Bharati case verdict remarks
Saysextraordinary attackonjudiciary
NEW DELHI, JAN 12 (PTI): The Congress on Thursday described Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar’s remarks questioning the landmark 1973 Kesavananda Bharati case verdict as an “extraordinary attack on the judiciary”, and said that a “no-holds-barred assault” on one constitutional institution by another was quite unprecedented.
Vice President Dhankhar had on Wednesday criticised the scrapping of the NJAC Act in 2015 and also questioned the Kesavananda Bharati case verdict, saying it set a wrong precedent and that he disagrees with the Supreme Court ruling that Parliament can amend the Constitution but not its basic structure.
“In my 18 years as an MP, I’ve never heard anyone criticise the 1973 Kesavana-
nda Bharati judgment of the Supreme Court,” Congress general secretary in-charge Jairam Ramesh said in a tweet.
“In fact, legal luminaries of BJP like Arun Jaitley hailed it as a milestone. Now, the Chairman of Rajya Sabha says it was wrong. Extraordinary attack on the judiciary!” he tweeted.
It also bears mention that a “no-holds-barred assault” on one Constitutional institution by another is quite unprecedented, Ramesh said in another tweet.
“Having different views is one thing, but the Vice President has taken the confrontation with the Supreme Court to an altogether different level!” he said.
Earlier, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said Dhankhar is “wrong” in stating that Parliament is supreme and his views should warn every Constitutionloving citizen to be alert to the dangers ahead. Reacting to Dhankhar’s remarks, Chi-
dambaram, a lawyer, said on Twitter, “The Hon’ble Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is wrong when he says that Parliament is supreme. It is the Constitution that is supreme.”
The “basic structure” doctrine was evolved to prevent a majoritarian-driven assault on the foundational principles of the Constitution, the former Union minister said. “Suppose Parliament, by a majority, voted to convert the parliamentary system into a Presidential system. Or repeal the State List in Schedule VII and take away the exclusive legislative powers of the States. Would such amendments be valid?” Chidambaram said in a series of tweets.
After the NJAC Act was struck down, nothing prevented the government from introducing a new Bill, the senior Congress leader said. “The striking down of one Act does not mean that the ‘basic structure’ doctrine is wrong,” he added.

Going in circles
As Rahul’s highly publicised Bharat Jodo Yatra comes to a close at Srinagar to coincide with the Republic Day on January 26, many questions arise about whether the yatra has succeeded in bringing all conscientious and concerned citizens together. The march, led by Rahul Gandhi was planned to span over for roughly five months, to cover more than 3,570 kilometres from Kanyakumari to Jammu and Kashmir through 12 states and two Union Territories. One of many questions is whether the yatra will provide the rudderless and comatose Congress with the ground support it badly needs; whether Rahul has learnt anything from his mass contacts or has the yatra only succeeded in resurrecting his sagging image as a national leader and possibly, the opposition face in 2024? While Congress needs to close ranks in order to fight elections against a formidable opponent, instead, many stalwarts including highly talented professionals have left the party out of frustration. The party may be in a state of bliss because it believes that the Gandhis are crucial to its identity and existence yet this aspect is spelling the doom for India’s oldest political organisation. The Yatra may be a welcome diversion for the Congress as Rahul has been hogging the limelight but the point is whether it has made him any better or wiser as a leader of a party of sycophants and camp followers? It was but understandable that the yatra caught the attention of the nation because it was a symbolic act of bringing people from various sections of society, particularly the ordinary citizens of the country together in expressing their concurrence on the issues facing them. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had reiterated that the yatra was non-political but a “tapasya” started against hate, fear and division of society as well as against unemployment and inflation. No one can doubt the noble mind concerned with human sufferings but to accept that the yatra was apolitical is misleading. If it is not political then it means the Congress under Rahul has evolved into a NGO from a political party that fought for India’s independence. It is unfortunate that the party has to be projected by a political phenomenon whose only right to be parachuted to the helm of the party’s leadership is entitlement from the surname. When most political parties in the world are confronted with a crisis, they look at the problem from all angles and try to find solutions. Do they need to change their leaders? Should they re-examine their policies? Are they failing to get their message across etc. Even in team sports like football or cricket, when a team consistently under performs, a great deal of analysis is done and the coach gets the axe. Once the coach is axed, the team composition also undergoes an overhaul under a new coach with strategies planned to achieve the objective. This sends a right message to all supporters and fans that factors responsible for past failures have been addressed and the fans and supporters are encouraged to continue backing their team. The mysterious thing about the Congress is that no such exercise is taking place but the mystery is solved when it is revealed that the party is steered by an amateur and non-politician.
DailyDevotion Have You Ever Been Alone with
God? (1)
When they were alone, He explained all things to His disciples. —Mark 4:34
Our Solitude with Him. Jesus doesn’t take us aside and explain things to us all the time; He explains things to us as we are able to understand them. The lives of others are examples for us, but God requires us to examine our own souls. It is slow work— so slow that it takes God all of time and eternity to make a man or woman conform to His purpose. We can only be used by God after we allow Him to show us the deep, hidden areas of our own character. It is astounding how ignorant we are about ourselves! We don’t even recognize the envy, laziness, or pride within us when we see it. But Jesus will reveal to us everything we have held within ourselves before His grace began to work. How many of us have learned to look inwardly with courage?
We have to get rid of the idea that we understand ourselves. That is always the last bit of pride to go. The only One who understands us is God. The greatest curse in our spiritual life is pride. If we have ever had a glimpse of what we are like in the sight of God, we will never say, “Oh, I’m so unworthy.” We will understand that this goes without saying. But as long as there is any doubt that we are unworthy, God will continue to close us in until He gets us alone. Whenever there is any element of pride or conceit remaining, Jesus can’t teach us anything. He will allow us to experience heartbreak or the disappointment we feel when our intellectual pride is wounded. He will reveal numerous misplaced affections or desires— things over which we never thought He would have to get us alone. Many things are shown to us, often without effect. But when God gets us alone over them, they will be clear.
Protecting the female migrants of the Northeast
India’s North Eastern Region (NER) has been a significant receiver of migrants in the past few decades given its low population density and location as a frontier region. Observers suggest that lesser migrant mobility takes place in the NER in comparison to the national average. As per a study in the Indian Journal of Labour Economics, with the exception of Arunachal Pradesh, no other state in the NER constitutes a percentage of migrants found to be higher than the national average of 45 per cent. States with the lowest mobility include Nagaland, Manipur and Meghalaya, with just one-fourth of its entire population being migrants.
Though almost all states in the NER have a lower percentage of migrants in comparison to the national average, the introduction of a migrant monitoring/ tracking system can be seen as a step towards the right direction as it would not only enumerate and recognise but also protect the NER’s female migrants. As per the 2011 Census, Assam (6,972,216) has the highest number of female migrants in the NER, followed by Tripura (815,217), Manipur (445,698), Meghalaya (354,167) and Nagaland (268,499). Mizoram (193,982) and Sikkim (137,976) were seen to have the lowest number of female migrants.
It is seen that apart from Maharashtra, no other Indian states have any institutionalised mechanisms in place to enumerate and grant recognition to its female migrants. Following the Maharashtra model, a migration monitoring system on a state-level basis in the NER could help map the movements of the most vulnerable categories of seasonal migrants, that
is, pregnant and lactating women, young mothers and their children. In Maharashtra, they are monitored with the help of unique identification numbers. A migration database thus, enables the Northeastern states to keep track of all ongoing intra-district, inter-districts and interstate migration, with all the information available under a single platform, and render appropriate assistance whenever required.
Due to the absence of a credible database enumerating and carrying information on inter-state migrant workers in India, it becomes difficult for the government to implement any relief and rehabilitation measures for this vulnerable category. While the Census of India has served as the primary source of information on migrants for the past few decades, it is to be noted that it was only 1971 onwards that an additional criteria concerning the ‘place of last residence’ was included in addition to the ‘place of birth’.
With the sudden onset of the pandemic and an overnight nationwide lockdown having a profound negative impact on the country’s female migrants, there must not be any laxity in preparation in the likely event of another nationwide lockdown.
Also, large number of female migrants and children in India remain unaware of their rights, and fall prey to the evils of trafficking and exploitation each year. States in the NER have been no exception to this trend since they share international borders, and have Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs) in place, to keep a strict watch on any potential human trafficking. The Ministry of Home Affairs states that Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh fund the highest num-
bers of AHTUs in the region– at 37, 12, 11 and 8 respectively. Both Manipur and Sikkim fund 5 AHTUs, while Mizoram and Tripura fund 4 and 2 AHTUs respectively.
In addition to this, a migrant monitoring mechanism shall simply help strengthen oversight of, and guarantee protection for the female migrant workers and their children in the respective states.
Female migrants and especially young girls, are always at high risk of exploitation, forced labour and abuse. To eradicate such forms of labour, there is need to increase access to decent working opportunities and protecting migrants.
However, this can only be possible with official datasets that correctly enumerate and grant recognition to female migrants. The migration monitoring mechanism also makes it easier to gather data on informal sectors that employ female migrants in large numbers– such as the construction sector for instance.
This in turn, guarantees benefits like proper working conditions and minimum wages. Major destination states for female migrants of the NER include Delhi, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Further, the monitoring system would provide information on facilities like vaccination, health check-ups and food distribution to the target beneficiaries, as a result of which these facilities can be availed easily.
It would also become easier to provide Anganwadi services to women migrants and their children.
This in turn would ensure a better implementation of health schemes, education programmes and guarantee employment under the Mahatma Gandhi
National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (MGNREGA) in the NER.
This is especially important
As per a studyin the South Asia Research journal, the national average of female participation under MGNREGA stood at 52 per cent in terms of state-wise workers’ participation under MGNREGA over a period of five years from 2006-2021. The rate of female participation in all the states of the NER were found to be much below the national average– Meghalaya (45.9 per cent), Tripura (45.8 per cent), Sikkim (47.1 per cent), Manipur (42.9 per cent), Mizoram (37.6 per cent), Arunachal Pradesh (35.4 per cent) Assam (33.4 per cent) and Nagaland (32.8 per cent).
This is simply because there have been no official datasets in place to capture the actual frequency and scale of female migration in the NER. Thus, female migrants as a category in the NER have suffered from underrepresentation over the past few years. In light of sex-disaggregated data concerning female migrant workers, there would be much to welcome in a state-wise migration monitoring system in the NER. The Centre thus, must play a more proactive role by offering its strategic guidance by coming up with a common platform for all the state-level migration monitoring systems in the region.

Chakhesang Theological Association supports Clean Election Campaign
In a context where corruption is the order of the day, and more so during elections, change is the need of the hour! Many are skeptical about the success of Clean Election Campaign but the Chakhesang Theological Association (CTA) hails the initiative of the Church regardless of denominations in her fight against faulty electioneering system.
No initiative can be perfect but the people of Nagaland has come a long way in their fight against social evils through the initiative of the Church. The blame game in the corrupt practices during the elections has not
taken our State any step forward. It’s time that, everybody takes the responsibility of being a responsible citizen! Almost two centuries ago, Leo Tolstoy wrote, “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.”
For most of us, this statement is already a cliché because we’ve heard of it and seen 101 times! If only hearing were enough to make impact, the world would have been positively different today!
A universal truth is that, it takes good people’s action to reduce evil deeds. Society is comprised of individuals, therefore,
individual transformation leads to corporate transformation. All must act both individually and corporately; there’s no excuse for passivity! The following quotes are depiction of the truth about making positive change:
“The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it” (Albert Einstein - Germany) “The world suffers a lot not because of the violence of bad people but because of the silence of the good people” (Napoléon Bonaparte - France)
“Bad people need nothing more to compass their ends, than
that good people should look on and do nothing” (John Stuart Mill - England)
“Tragedy is not the brutality of evil people, but the silence of good people” (Martin Luther King Jr. - America) “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends” (Martin Luther King Jr.- America)“Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little” (Edmund Burke – Great Britain)
Aren’t we tired of being ‘good people’ by being silent! Aren’t we tired of complaining about self-created system? Aren’t
‘What will unite the Naga?’

Most of the Leaders of the Groups were member of the original Naga National Council NNC, formed on 2nd February 1946 in the Class 6th Room of Government School at Wokha.
This Article is not intended at construction of the Political History of the Naga National Groups. The sole intention here is to discuss the question of: What will unite the Naga?
Every Naga, whoever and wherever he is or she is, longs for the Unity of the Naga but no one has attempted to give an account of what has seeded the divisions in the Naga and unless the Naga themselves know what caused the troubles, they wouldn’t be able to repair the troubles. A sick man does not know what has gone wrong inside his body; unless what has gone wrong inside the body is known, the ailment cannot be remedied.
selves, the malady cannot be remedied. It is necessary to openly, boldly, honestly and even brutally discuss the matter ourselves!
There is a general feeling of expectation in the Naga in the street for the NNPGs to unite as if they are the only ones responsible for the divisions of the Naga.
The Naga political division is not responsible only to the NNPG alone: the entire Naga population have their share in the divisions.
The ‘Over-ground’ population provides moral support to this and that political NNPGs. This civilian overground support consists not only hard physical, materials or fire arms, but consists of morally soft forces in fund, mental and social supports in line of their Tribe: The civilian soft support may consists of Prayer too for this or that Group!
Each Armed Group physically maintains its Territory for Tax separate from the others. In this, the Information support of the civil over-ground is significant to the violent Political Group like the BJP Government runs and acts on the soft-forces of the RSS ideology in India.
No wonder, Group either the vociferous or the silent, would not like to suggest a Road Map for Unity or for Peace openly in public and reveal their partisan Stand to others in Public! Therefore, to date, none of the NNPGs has brought out any Road Map of Peace to let the public consider it.
vited to a big Public Consultative Meeting by an NNPG to share my opinion. I thanked them for the invitation but expressed my inability to attend the Meeting because I shouldn’t discuss personal private opinions on the Groups in the public, in the presence of people unknown to me.
I can express my personal private suggestions and opinions honestly and truthfully in private to one Group, but I don’t dare to express it openly to a mixed Group in Public.
Nobody would honestly like to express naked confidential personal private opinions to a mixed group with different partisan groups in Public!
I wrote back to them it would be better if they discuss the matter with one person they could trust separately, in a person-to-person meet, privately and confidentially, than discuss their mind in public openly in the presence of this and that unknowns persons.
The FNR has spent quite some Time on ‘Forgive & Forget’ and on ‘Reconciliation’ in the NNPGs. It is necessarily good to bring the contending Groups to a common negotiating Table, the way Nagaland Tribe Council [NTC] had done between the Prime Minister of India and Working Group of 7 NP Political Groups on concrete Agenda.
the NNPGs at ATLANTA, Georgia [USA], hosted by Ken Sehested, Executive Director and Editor of the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America, Lake Junaluska, North Carolina with FNR acting as the Master of the Ceremony in July 38 to 3 August 1997; the FNR also recently arranged the Kolkota CNR & C, [Council of Naga Relation & and Co-operation] to forge Peace and Reconciliation in the Naga National Political Groups, but nothing has been heard come out of the CNR & C since.
Shortly after signing the great Atlanta USA Meeting in 1997, the General Secretary of the Socialist Council of Nagaland, Dally Mungro, a participant of the Atlanta Meeting of the Khaplang Group was shot dead by the other Group at Science College area Kohima. The FNR remained spectacularly silent like the Sleeping Beauty Cinderella in the mountain at the Machiavellian politics of the IM.
To usher Peace to a people’s long ragging political Storm by an Individual alone requires unquestioned Moral Force like that of Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela or Mahatma Gandhi in the person with unwavering backing of a strong lasting established political Organization or Religion than just a simple zealous nice Rev, Doctor.
we tired of pointing fingers at others? It is said, “It’s better to light a candle than to curse darkness” (Eleanor Roosevelt). Romans 13:12 says, “The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.” Can you be a candle light? I can be one too! We, the Chakhesang Theological Association (CTA), fully support Clean Election Campaign! Let the good triumph over evil in power of the Almighty God!

Just after the meeting that arranged the Kolkota Meeting, a member of one of the Group, a person I don’t know, phoned me a Meeting has been proposed further at Kolkota. I enquired over the phone whether the Agenda points have been agreed for the Kolkota CNR & C; I was told, “no such points have been discussed.”
It was reported in the local Paper that “in the Next Meeting the FNR is entrusted to prepare the draft Proposals for the concord.” Whether such a proposal has been drawn up or not has not been heard of since.
If it has not yet been done, then the time has come for a person without any real mass following and lacking uncommon moral authority, to come to his good senses to end attempting to forge a Concord personally alone between truculent groups of a People’s long lasted political movement.
Some of the reasons that seeded the differences in the Naga have been brought out here in this write-up, for the public to see and come to common conclusions, if possible, for the good of the common People in the State.
hima attending a grand civil Meeting at the Zonal Council Hall in the city and any Naga who was interested attended.
I don’t remember who & who said what and which things in the meeting, but quite a number spoke on matter related to the Naga. Mr. Rajmohan Gandhi also expressed some of his comments in a few words.
At a very interesting stage of the meeting, Mr. Tobu Periatsü, the young General Secretary of the NNC asked Rajmohan Gandhi a poignant question: “What should the Naga do to get Independence?”
Mr. Grandhi promptly replied:
“The Naga should be united.”
Immediately Tobu answered:
“The Nagas are united.”
Rajmohan Gandhi then, said: “I hear that the Nagas are killing each others.”

The local Papers often describe the Naga of today as divided as they never before were. This is because they too don’t have the courage to bring out their Road Map of Unity for fear of causing the displeasure to the hegemony of this or that NNPG Groups.

The FNR also had brought the warring Groups together but without any concrete political Agenda other than on the Theme of Fasting & Prayer and Forgive & Forget. They arranged NNPG Soccer Matches zealously played in the muddy football Ground of Nagaland, but after the Match no Political common Agenda seem to have emerged. The first Joint Reconciliation Meetings of
Since 1997, the FNR had in the last 22 years arranged 4 loud concordant meetings of the NNPGs:
1. On 24/8/2011: The Naga Concordant Meeting.
2. On 4/2014: Lentent Agreement.
3. On 14/9/2002: Joint Accordant.

Some may think the Naga Political Declaration is the main cause for all the Troubles in the Naga Society; my view is: a people without a Vision, is no better than a beautiful dream. The Naga Vision to live a life of its own culture freely, is more than an ill-advised Idea of any of others in the North east Communities.
Let me cite the story of an incident, and the Reader has the freedom of his or her own conclusions:
Quite some years ago Rajmohan Gandhi, a great friend of the Naga and the Grand-son of Mahatma Gandhi, while an MP, was in Ko-
But Tobu, the young General Secretary replied: “The Nagas have been taking each other’s head from very ancient times; but on the question of Independence, they are all united.”
Rajmohan then suddenly put a retro-question surprisingly back at Tobu: “Then, what do you think India should do?”
“Get out of Nagaland!”
Shouted Tobu in an imperative voice, full of the packed hall!
Rajmohan Gandhi immediately replied:
“I have already sent for my Ticket; I am leaving tomorrow!”
Everyone in the Hall broke into laud laughter: Mr. Tobu laughed the loudest!

Govt extends MBBS internship cut-off date
NEW DELHI, JAN 12
(PTI): The Union health ministry has extended the MBBS internship cut-off date to June 30 and an official announcement in this regard is expected soon, official sources said on Thursday.
Presently, the cut-off date for aspirants to complete their mandatory oneyear internship is March 31, 2023.
The Indian Medical Association, student union bodies, prospective candidates and several state authorities urged the ministry to extend the eligibility date to June 30, 2023.

Security breach at PM’s roadshow
HUBBAL LI (K’TAKA), JAN 12 (PTI): The security for Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Thursday breached by a boy who apparently broke through a barricade and rushed towards his car during a roadshow. Modi was standing on the running board of his moving car and waving at an enthusiastic crowd that lined up both sides of the road when the incident happened.
Modi extended his hand to accept the garland but could not reach out to the boy. Security officials accompanying him on the road got hold of the garland and handed it over to the Prime Minister who put it inside the car.
The police and traffic officials on duty immediately pulled the boy back and whisked him him away.
CBI books ex-finance secretary for ‘corruption’
NEW DELHI, JAN 12 (PTI): The CBI on Thursday conducted searches at the premises of former finance secretary Arvind Mayaram after filing an FIR against him and a UK-based company for alleged corruption in the supply of exclusive colour shift security thread for Indian bank notes, officials said.
CBI, in its FIR, alleged
that Mayaram, the UK-based company De La Rue International Ltd and unidentified officials of the finance ministry and RBI hatched a criminal conspiracy to extend undue favour to the firm. The agency alleged that Mayaram as finance secretary granted an “illegal”
three years extension to an “expired contract” with the company for supplying exclusive colour shift security thread without taking any mandatory security clearance from home ministry or informing the then finance minister, they said. The extension granted by Mayaram
was allegedly the fourth, the FIR said. CBI registered the FIR under IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy and cheating and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. It was followed by searches at Jaipur and Delhi residence of the 1978-batch retired IAS officer, days after he had joined the Bharat Jodo Yatra of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Amit Shah takes stock of the situation in Joshimath
NEW DELHI, JAN 12 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday took stock of the situation in Joshimath where cracks have been witnessed in buildings and other structures, officials said.
Four other Union ministers - Nitin Gadkari (road transport), R K Singh (power), Bhupendra Yadav (environmental and forest) and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat (jal shakti) attended the meeting along with top officials.
Shah assessed the situation arising in Joshimath and steps taken to ameliorate people’s hardship, the officials said.
The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) on Tuesday reviewed the situation in Joshimath and stressed that the immediate priority should be to ensure the com-
plete and safe evacuation of all residents in the affected zone.
At a meeting of the NCMC, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba stressed that priority should also be accorded to the demolition of vulnerable structures in a safe manner.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday said a committee would decide the market rate for compensation to be paid to the families affected in Joshimath by keeping in mind the interests of stakeholders.
A 19-member committee headed by Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana was set up on Wednesday to distribute an interim assistance of Rs 1.50 lakh among each affected family and decide the rate at which compensation is to be paid.
JOB VACANCY
India to take up development issues at G-20 meetings: FM
NEW DELHI, JAN 12 (PTI): India will take up developmental issues of the Global South at the meetings of the G-20 countries emphasising that there should not be any first world or third world, but only one world having a common future.
Addressing the ministerial session at the Global South Summit, she said India will use the G-20 Presidency to encourage collective solutions to deal with the numerous challenges facing the world, like economic slowdown, rising inflation, threat of resurgence of pandemic and risks emerging from geopolitical conflicts.
“While maintaining close relations with developed countries, India is keen to put forward the point of view of the Global South -- our co-passengers on the path of development for decades.
“We strongly believe there should not be any first world or a third world, but just one world with a shared understanding for a common future,” Sitharaman said while speaking on the theme of ‘Financing
People Centric Development’.
India has taken over the presidency of the G-20, which is a grouping of 20 developing and developed nations, for the current year from December 1, 2022.
The ‘Global South’ largely refers to countries in Asia, Africa and South America.
India is hosting the two-day summit to bring together countries of the Global South and provide them a common platform to share their common concerns relating to various global challenges, including food and energy security triggered by the Ukraine conflict.
Sitharaman said as the world rebuilds itself from the pandemic, the Global South needs to
exhibit “strong solidarity” to deal with challenges like pandemic, climate change and geopolitical tensions which are affecting efforts for development and economic growth.
The Minister said that the hardships posed by the pandemic have exposed vulnerabilities at all levels and shown that a major scale up of response mechanisms is required so that the support provided by these institutions is responsive to country-specific needs.
“We believe strengthening multilateral development banks is a key to addressing the global challenges of the 21st century,” she said, adding the recent geopolitical tension and the pandemic has aggravated the global debt vulnerabilities.
“If left unaddressed, these mounting debt vulnerabilities can trigger global recession and push millions to extreme poverty. Under India’s G-20 Presidency, financing for the social dimension of sustainable development is an important priority,” Sitharaman said.

Clarifying that NPAC was not against election, Therieh said its sole objective was Naga solution. He maintained that Nagas must rise up for change and called for acting on the resolution and asserted that no one had the authority to take Nagas for a ride against their will.
He appealed to all Nagas to extend cooperation and observe the bandh on January 14. Terming it as a litmus test for Nagas, he
said the success of the bandh would show whether Nagas were for solution or for election.
On the present situation of Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO), the NPAC convener commented that it was different matter and that the committee understood its demand and respected the sentiment.
He appealed to ENPO to join hands and extend solidarity by observing the bandh. He also urged the State government and stakeholders to cooperate with NPAC in observing the bandh.

“And as the decades went by, we are beginning to feel the negative impacts of playing the accommodating host and every move to protect our interest is taken as a means of threat to them,” SAPO lamented.
SAPO said that Angamis had also played a sig-
nificant role both in freedom struggle as well as in State formation, and had been sharing both the fruits and sufferings in equal measure.
The organization acknowledged that Angamis as humans also had limitations, but stated that the way few Maos were projecting Southern Angamis and misleading the Manipur government and Imphal Free Press challenging them and threatening to “teach” them a lesson were going too far and unexpected as many of them had earned and lived in Nagaland due to government service, business, etc.
They said it was time to implement the land and
people protection laws, including Article 371 (A) and Inner Line Permit framed to safeguard the Nagas of Nagaland. They warned that If the Angamis were to share what they had or get, then they might be driven to poverty in no time.
Meanwhile, the SAPO charged the Manipur government of building infrastructure in total disregard to the TPO directive “not to take up any activity till Kezoltsa dispute was settled”.
Although some portion of the land in question fell inside Manipur, they said that did not mean the land did not belong to the Anga-
mis of Nagaland. SAPO also insisted settlement of the Kezoltsa issue between Mao Council, SAPO and Maram Khulen amicably as per Naga customary law.
SAPO further cautioned any individual/group from unnecessarily interfering for gaining popularity or undue benefits. They declared that the organisation and people would not tolerate misleading agencies such as IFP and that no entity should risk facing the brunt of the people.
They asserted that SAPO was ever prepared to go to any extent in safeguarding land and people.

PAN card as single business ID likely to get legal backing in Budget 2023
NEW DELHI, JAN 12 (AGENCIES): The upcoming Budget 2023 is likely to roll out a legal and operational framework for adopting the permanent account number (PAN) as a single business identification. This will apply to all businesses securing approvals, a senior finance ministry official informed Business Standard.
The report stated that Budget 2023 will make the provision for linking PAN card of a person or entity with their multiple existing identifications in order to streamline the process.
The move will benefit investors who won’t have to fill out multiple identification details for the National Single Window System for project-related clearance and approvals. At present, nearly 20 different identifiers exist at both the state and central
levels and these are Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN), Taxpayer Identification Number, Tax Deduction Account Number, Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, Corporate Identification Number and so on.
The senior finance ministry official said that an enabling provision or clause may be introduced in the Finance Act, 2023 that will give “legal backing” for PAN to be sued as the primary identifier of an entity. This move will improve the ease of doing business.
Earlier, one working group, headed by an additional secretary (revenue) under the Ministry of Finance, had submitted its report end-December suggesting that this move should be implemented in a phased manner.
Cong accuses BJP of trying to repeal Art 371 (A)
(From p-1)
adding that even though the party did not have a single MLA in the current Legislative Assembly, it would work to oust the incumbent government.
He disclosed that Congress was also holding talks with like-minded parties and politicians to fight together to remove the present government, as Nagaland was presently going through a difficult and challenging time because the incumbent had indulged in corruption and people were suffering.
“This is only a warming up exercise. We are confident that the Congress along with other like-minded parties would oust the present government in the State,” he asserted.
On his part, Sanjay
Dutt mentioned that they had learnt about the concerns and issues of Naga people through engagements with various party leaders and functionaries. He claimed that the party was very much concerned about the people of Nagaland.
Lashing out at the BJP government’s alleged “one nation, one religion” policy, he pointed out that Nagaland was a perfect example of unity in diversity. By bringing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), he mentioned that BJP had shown its true colour that it wanted to divide the nation on the basis of caste and religion.
He assured that Congress would stand up strongly and be vocal against all
such moves.
NPCC working president Khriedi Theünuo expressed confidence that the visit of AICC leaders to the State would serve as a major boost to Congress functionaries ahead of the election.
He asserted the people aspired for a secular party to form the next government and claimed that Nagaland being a Christian State, Congress was the only party that could protect the religion of Naga people.
He said: “BJP, which is fighting for only one religion, will have no place in Nagaland while Congress being a secular party will protect all minority groups and every section of the society.” He said NPCC was happy that AICC was serious about the Assembly election in the State and forming the next government. The AICC leaders also met Mahila and Youth Congress leaders.

Russia changes its top military commander again in Ukraine
KYIV, JAN 12 (AGEN -
CIES): Moscow named a new commander for its invasion of Ukraine while Russian private military firm Wagner Group said its capture of the salt mining town Soledar in eastern Ukraine was complete, though the Ukrainian military said the battle was not over, reports Reuters.
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu on Wednesday appointed Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov as overall commander for what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine, now in its 11th month.
The change effectively demoted General Sergei Surovikin, who was appointed only in October to lead the invasion and oversaw heavy attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of Wagner and a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said his forces had captured all of Soledar and killed about 500 Ukrainian soldiers after heavy fighting.
“I want to confirm the complete liberation and
cleansing of the territory of Soledar,” Prigozhin said in a statement.
“The whole city is littered with the corpses of Ukrainian soldiers,” he said.
U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters on Wednesday he could not corroborate reports that Soledar was in Russian hands.
Donetsk governor Pavlo Kyrylenko told Ukrainian state TV that 559 civilians remain in Soledar, including 15 children, and it was impossible to evacuate them due to ongoing fighting. The town had a pre-war population of around 10,500.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy mocked previous Wagner claims to have seized part
14 Malian soldiers killed by explosives in multiple attacks
BAMAKO, JAN 12 MALI
(AP): Coordinated attacks by Islamic extremists have killed 14 Malian soldiers and wounded nearly a dozen, the army said.
Multiple improvised explosive devices detonated between Dia and Diafarabe villages as well as between Koumara and Macina towns in central Mali, said Col Souleymane Dembele, the director of public relations for the army, in a statement Wednesday.
During the same attacks, which occurred earlier this week, Mali’s forces killed more than 30 “terrorists,” Dembele said.
The West African nation has been riddled with violence linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group for a decade. Thousands of people have been killed.
Mali’s ruling junta, which seized power in two coups starting in 2020, has been struggling to beat
back the jihadis, especially since French troops pulled out of the country in August amid frayed relations with the junta. France has been in the region since 2013 when it sent in troops to Mali to push back extremists encroaching on the capital, Bamako, but the jihadis have since regrouped.
Since December 2021, the junta has been working with Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group, but the Russians have also been unable to stem the violence. In August, 42 soldiers were killed when their military barracks was attacked.
“Extremists groups continue to wreak havoc in the Sahelian nation despite the junta’s employment of mercenaries to stem the rise of violence. It’s clearly not working,” said Laith Alkhouri, CEO of Intelonyx Intelligence Advisory, which provides intelligence analysis.
of Soledar but made no immediate comment on the latest assertions.
“The terrorist state and its propagandists are trying to pretend that part of our town of Soledar … is some sort of a Russian possession,” Zelenskiy said in a video address. “But fighting continues.”
In a statement on Facebook, the Ukrainian military general staff said Russian forces were suffering heavy losses as they tried to take Soledar and sever Ukrainian supply lines.
In its Thursday morning roundup of reports from the frontlines, the Ukraine military command mentioned tanks and artillery in the Soledar area, but offered no other details.
Russian military ‘fall guy’
A Russian Defence Ministry statement said its latest command reshuffle was meant to improve contacts between military branches and the effectiveness of the command structure. One prominent military blogger who posts on the Telegram messaging app under the name of Rybar said Surovikin was being made the fall guy for recent Russian military debacles. Those included a Ukrainian attack on a Russian barracks that killed at least 89 Russian soldiers over New Year’s.
Surovikin was ordered to head the campaign after Ukrainian offensives turned the tide of the war and drew attention to poor training and morale among Russian forces. If pro-Russian forces succeed in taking Soledar, it would be a stepping stone in Moscow’s thrust to capture Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region. The town would be a base to attack the nearby city of Bakhmut, a supply line hub in eastern Ukraine, where defenders have held out for months.
Brazil ‘megaprotest’ fizzles
BRASILIA , BRAZIL, JAN 10 (AP): Skittish Brazilian authorities on Wednesday spared no effort to boost security in the face of a social media flyer promoting a “megaprotest to retake power” in two dozen cities. Whether because of preventative measures adopted or not, the supposed uprising was a dud.
Less than 10 protesters showed along Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach; there were more journalists in attendance, plus 29 police vehicles. On Brasilia’s esplanade surrounded by federal government buildings, authorities had designated an area for protest and stationed police and national guard troops. Just one couple showed, dressed in the same Brazil soccer jerseys that thousands of rioters wore four days earlier.
“We were surprised to be the only ones here today,” said Eunice Carvalho, a 58-year-old housewife joined by her husband. “People got scared after the imprisonments, which were excessive.”
“The right to protest freely will always be respected and cannot be confused with terrorism,” said the official, Ricarado Cappelli.

Peru anti-government protests spread, with clashes in Cusco
LIMA, PERU, JAN12 (AP): Protests against Peruvian President Dina Boluarte’s government that have left 48 people dead since they began a month ago spread through the south of the Andean country on Wednesday with new clashes reported in the tourist city of Cusco.
Health officials in Cusco said 37 civilians and six police officers were injured after protesters tried to take over the city’s airport, where many foreign tourists arrive to see sites including the nearby Incan citadel of Machu Picchu.
Protests and road blockades against Boluarte and in support of ousted President Pedro Castillo were also seen in 41 provinces, mainly in Peru’s south.
The unrest began in early December following the destitution and arrest of Castillo, Peru’s first president of humble, rural roots, following his widely condemned attempt to dissolve Congress and head off his own impeachment.
The protest, mainly in neglected rural areas of the country still loyal to Castillo, are seeking immediate elections, Boluarte’s resignation,
Castillo’s release and justice for the protesters killed in clashes with police.
Some of the worst protest violence came on Monday when 17 people were killed in clashes with police in the city Juliaca near Lake Titicaca and protesters later attacked and burned a police officer to death. DeSantis tested on immigration as he weighs 2024 candidacy

Supplement smarts: best ways to take different vitamins
doctor says otherwise. The average MVM has more than you need.
If You Take Mineral Supplements
Mineral supplements can compete with each other, so you may want to break them up and take them with different meals.
Know What’s Inside
Read multivitamin labels so you know what you’re getting in your supplement.
Follow these tips to see if you would benefit from taking a multivitamin.
With hundreds of supplements available, it’s hard to believe that not every nutrient in whole foods has been captured in a capsule. That’s why eating a variety of healthy foods is the best way to meet your health needs. But if you’re low on a certain vitamin or mineral, or just want to cover all bases with a daily MVM (multivitamin/mineral), these tips will help you get the most from it.
Timing Your Multi
It’s best to take a multivitamin with food, so you’ll absorb it better.
You can take your MVM any time you’d like. Your body absorbs some of its vitamins better with food, so you may want to take it with a meal or a snack. You’ll also avoid the upset stomach that you can get when you take it on an empty stomach. Not a breakfast person? Have it with lunch or even dinner.
When to Take Water-Soluble Vitamins
Take water-soluble vitamins like B vitamins and vitamin C daily.
Water dissolves them, and your body doesn’t store them, so most must be taken every day. They include C and the B’s: thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folic acid (B9), and cobalamin (B12). Take them with or without food, with one exception: You’ll absorb B12 better with a meal. If you also use vitamin C, put 2 hours between them. Vitamin C can keep your body from using B12.
When to Take Fat-Soluble Vitamins
Take fat-soluble vitamins with a meal with some fat for better absorption.
Vitamins A, D, E, and K need to go with fat from a meal for your body to absorb and use them. But you don’t need a lot of fat -- or any saturated fat. The healthy plant-based kind you find in foods like avocado or nuts will do just fine.
If You Take Iron Supplements
Take iron with vitamin C to boost iron absorption.
You absorb iron best on an empty stomach. Take it with water or, better yet, a citrus juice: Iron and vitamin C have a tag-team effect. If it makes you queasy, save it for right after a meal. But don’t mix it with calcium or high-calcium foods -- these interfere with iron. You won’t take in either one fully. Men and postmenopausal women should skip supplements with this mineral unless a
Large doses of minerals can compete with each other to be absorbed. Don’t use calcium, zinc, or magnesium supplements at the same time. Also, these three minerals are easier on your tummy when you take them with food, so if your doctor recommends them, have them at different meals or snacks. Don’t take any individual mineral at the same time as an MVM or an antioxidant vitamin formula, like one with beta-carotene and lycopene.
If
You Take Vitamin A
High doses of vitamin A and beta carotene may be problematic for certain kinds of people.
Watch the amount of what’s called preformed vitamin A. If you’re pregnant, doses over 10,000 IU a day can cause birth defects. High levels of both A and the usually safe beta-carotene (a substance that the body coverts to vitamin A) may raise your chances of having lung cancer if you’re a smoker, and maybe even if you’re a former smoker.
Prenatal Vitamins and Morning Sickness
Prenatal vitamins are important to take, but they may make you nauseous so take them with food.
Extra folic acid and iron are very important for a healthy baby. You might even take folic acid before you get pregnant. But prenatal vitamins can make nausea worse, mostly because of the iron. If this happens to you, pair your prenatal vitamins with a light snack before you go to bed. Talk to your doctor about the best prenatal formula for you.
Supplements and Your Prescriptions
Be careful because certain supplements may interfere with the activity of some prescription medications.
Even essential nutrients can interfere with many common medications. If you take a traditional blood thinner like warfarin, just the small amount of vitamin K in an MVM can cut its strength. Taking more than 1,000 mg of vitamin E per day can raise your risk for bleeding. And if you take thyroid medication, taking calcium, magnesium, or iron within 4 hours can cut its strength. Ask your doctor about how best to time it.
The Alphabet of Amounts
The amount of a nutrient you should take in a day is expressed as the recommended daily allowance (RDA), daily value (DV), or upper limit (UL).
RDA (recommended daily allowance) is the daily amount of a nutrient you should get, based on sex and age. DV (daily value) is the percentage of a nutrient that a supplement or food serving adds to the average daily diet for all ages. UL (upper limit) is the most of a nutrient you should get in a day. Side effects from big doses range from tiredness or diarrhea to kidney stones or organ damage.
There’s no one standard MVM formula. Some have more nutrients than recommended. Others may come up short on some RDAs. For instance, the amount of calcium you need to meet the RDA is too much to fit into a tablet that you could easily swallow. Scan the full ingredients list so you know exactly what’s in the supplement you’re considering. This will also help you know if you need to time when you take it.
Personalize Your Formula
Take multivitamins appropriate for your sex and age to get the right mix of nutrients for you.
Another way to get more of the nutrients you need is to shop for formulas geared to your age and sex. For example, many vitamins for seniors have more calcium and vitamins D and B12 than younger people need. As you get older, your body doesn’t do as good a job of absorbing B12. Women in particular often need extra calcium and vitamin D after menopause to protect bones. Men’s formulas leave out the iron.
Are Gummies Any Good?
Gummy vitamins may contain excess sugar and calories that contribute to cavities or the temptation to over consume them. Opinions about gummy vitamins are mixed. One study found that people
who take vitamin D in gummy form get more from it than from a tablet. On the other hand, gummies can have a lot of sugar and calories. And because they taste like candy, it’s easy to go overboard and eat too many. They may even cause cavities. Also, not all brands contain all essential vitamins and minerals. Some may not even contain the amounts listed on the label.
Look for Quality Checks
Some organizations test supplements to ensure they contain what’s listed on the label.
Since the FDA doesn’t regulate supplements, look for brands that have been “verified” by one of the three companies that test supplements in the U.S.: Pharmacopeia, Consumer Lab, or NSF International. These testing organizations verify that what’s on the label is in the bottle in the right amounts.
Keep a Supplement Diary
Keep a list of supplements you take and make sure your doctor knows about everything you are taking.
If you keep a log, it can help you time out different supplements and keep track of how much you take every day. The National Institute of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements has a form called “My Dietary Supplement and Medicine Record” that you can print out and fill in. Bring it with you, along with your medication list, when you go to doctor visits.

I-League: SDFC, RKFC share spoils
NEW DELHI, JAN 12
(AGENCIES): Sudeva Delhi FC picked up their second point of the season as they played out a 1-1 draw against Real Kashmir FC in the Hero I-League 2022-23 match at the Chhattrasal Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday, January 12, 2023.
In a game that lacked tempo in the first half, it was Sudeva Delhi who took the lead early in the second session through an exquisite free-kick taken by Seilenthang Lotjem. The lead was later cancelled out right at the depth by a powerful volley from substitute Samuel Kynshi as Real Kashmir managed to salvage a draw, denying the hosts to get three points in a match for the first time in the season.
It was the home team that enjoyed better exchanges of play in the initial minutes, however, failing to create any goal-scoring chances. There was a tussle in the middle of the park, where the Sudeva midfield, led by their Nigerian recruit Akeem Abioye, were kept busy dealing with the Real
Kashmir trio of captain Yakubu Wadudu along with Nuriddin Davronov and Lalnuntluanga Bawitlung.
Sudeva offered no space to the Real Kashmir midfield but in process, they had to play from the back, reverting to a long ball strategy, which remained ineffective for the most parts as the striker Francis Uchenna Nwankwo was well marked by the defensive pair of Jestin George and Balwinder Singh.
The best chance of the
half came to Real Kashmir in the 23rd minute when full-back Akashdeep Singh played a long through ball for Ibrahim Nurudeen on the left wing. The Ghanaian crossed the ball into the six-yard box for Nozim Babadzhanov, who, on any other day, would have easily tapped into an open goal from a close range but failed to do so on this occasion and skied the ball.
The second period started with newfound energy within the Sudeva

camp as they took the game straight into Real Kashmir half. Francis, who remained anonymous for the majority of the first half, drifted wide to the right wing to cross the ball into the box in the 49th minute. Francis’ cross went to Hriivei Carlos Pao after Akashdeep Singh had failed to clear the ball, but, to Sanjiban Ghosh’s relief, the effort from Carlos Pao was a tame one as the Real Kashmir custodian collected it with ease.
In the next minute, Francis was again in the thick of things. This time the striker managed to get the ball around Real Kashmir’s George but was tripped by the defender as the Nigerian won a free-kick just outside the penalty area. Seilenthang Lotjem struck the free-kick with perfection as it ended up in the top corner with the goalkeeper Ghosh having no chance.
The urgency among the Real Kashmir players could be clearly seen. Defender Davinder Singh, in his attempt to win the ball, ended up receiving a yellow card, while the midfield

showed in September that she can also succeed on hard courts when she added a first U.S. Open title to her two French Open crowns.
The Pole has not looked quite as dominant so far this year, however, and left the court in tears last week after a shock defeat by Jessica Pegula in the United Cup semi-finals.
Her preparations for the season’s opening major were further disrupted by a shoulder injury that forced her out of this week’s Adelaide International 2 event.
battle between Wadudu, Bawitlung and Abioye continued and turned fierce as all three were booked near the hour mark.
In the final quarter of the game, Real Kashmir increased pressure on the rival defence. The Sudeva unit, who had shifted to a defensive mode, were able to endure most of the pressure from the Snow Leopards but lost their composure in the injury time when fullback Lalhrezuala Sailung failed to clear a cross from George which reached Samuel Kynshi as the substitute thumped the volley into the back of the net, bagging the much important point for the visitors.

Southampton stun Man City to reach League Cup semis
LONDON, JAN 12 (AGENCIES): Pep Guardiola admitted Manchester City were “not prepared” as they suffered a shock 2-0 defeat against struggling Southampton in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Guardiola’s side paid the price for a limp display and never recovered after first half goals from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo at St Mary’s.
City sit second in the Premier League, while Southampton are languishing at the bottom of the table.
Southampton went ahead in the 23rd minute when Lyanco cut out a loose pass from Sergio Gomez and delivered a low cross that France Under-21 international Mara swept home for his first goal for the club.
Five minutes later, Mali international Djenepo was allowed to advance unchecked before curling a superb 30-yard strike over Stefan Ortega, who was

Guardiola sent on Kevin De Bruyne at the interval and Erling Haaland after 56 minutes, but his lethargic team finished without a shot on target.
Southampton have never won the League Cup, losing the 1979 and 2017 finals, and they will face Newcastle in a twolegged semi-final later in January.
Nottingham Forest earned a last four tie against Manchester United after beating Wolves 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the City Ground.
After last weekend’s embarrassing FA Cup loss against second tier Blackpool, Forest are back on the Wembley trail as they reached the League Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1992.
They took the lead through a close-range finish from former Wolves centre-back Willy Boly in the 18th minute.
Raul Jimenez grabbed Wolves’ 64th minute equaliser, but Dean Henderson was Forest’s shoot-out star as he saved penalties from Joe Hodge and Ruben Neves.

MELBOURNE, JAN 12
(AGENCIES): The Australian Open women’s tournament has thrown up plenty of surprises over the years but it is hard to see anyone other than Poland’s imperious Iga Swiatek lifting the trophy after an outstanding 2022 season.
Still only 21, Swiatek has quickly established her-
self as the player no one else wants to face. She led the WTA Tour with 67 match wins and eight titles, including two Grand Slams, and strung together a 37-match winning run from February to July.
Swiatek ascended to the top of the rankings in April and has remained at the summit ever since, and
Swiatek later described her first loss of the year as just a hiccup.
“I felt kind of helpless, because physically and mentally I wasn’t able to show up even, and problem solve,” she said. “I feel like I’m going to be more fresh before the Australian Open.”

Rahul helps India beat SL to clinch ODI series
KOLKATA, JAN 12 (IANS): Wicketkeeperbatter KL Rahul stepped up when it mattered the most to pull India out of a tricky stage by slamming his 12th ODI fifty and carry them to a hard-fought four-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the second ODI at Eden Gardens, here on Thursday.
After Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj picked three wickets each to bundle out Sri Lanka for 215, the visitors’ bowlers reduced India to 86/4. But Rahul kept his calm and batted sensibly under pressure to make an unbeaten 64 off 103 balls, and struck a crucial 75-run partnership with Hardik Pandya to take India over the line with 40 balls to spare, giving the hosts’ a series win.
Chasing 216, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill smacked six boundaries in the first four overs. But Rohit fell in the fifth over to Chamika Karunaratne, giving a regulation catch to the keeper while looking to punch it through covers
without any footwork.
Gill smacked Lahiru Kumara for back-to-back fours in the next over. But the pacer had the last laugh as Gill picked out short midwicket through a shortarm pull. Kumara inflicted more damage by getting a length ball to come in sharply and Virat Kohli, stuck in the crease, got an inside edge to the stumps, as India’s top three fell in power-play.
Shreyas Iyer pulled with conviction twice off Karunaratne for a brace of
fours and had some luck by getting boundaries off leading edges. His stay ended when he played the wrong line off Kumara and was rapped lbw. He took a review, but replays showed ball clipping leg-stump.
Rahul joined forces with Hardik to get India’s chase back on track. The duo took their time to settle down in order and weather the early storm. After India’s 100 was achieved, the duo began to punish loose deliveries from the Sri Lankan bowlers.
When Rajitha bowled too full and sprayed down leg, Hardik was quick in driving through mid-off and flicking through backward square leg for boundaries. When Hasaranga overpitched, Rahul leant forward to drive through cover for four. In the next over, Kumara overpitched and Rahul took full advantage by lofting high over mid-off for another four.
As the ball started to lose the shine and pitch began to be less spicy, India were cruising. Hardik brought out a front foot drive against Dhananjaya de Silva, the sixth bowling option and then flicked off Karunaratne for another four. But in an attempt to drive again off Karunaratne, Hardik was stuck at crease and nicked behind to keeper. Axar Patel began well with an uppish drive through vacant extra cover gap off Karunaratne for a boundary which was called no-ball. He made full use of the free hit by fiercely pulling over deep mid-wicket and putting the
Djokovic, Nadal can only meet in final at Aus Open
MELBOURNE, JAN
12 (AP): Rivals Novak
Djokovic and Rafael Nadal were placed on opposite halves of the Australian Open bracket in the draw Thursday, meaning the owners of a combined 43 Grand Slam singles titles could only meet in the final at Melbourne Park.
Djokovic, a nine-time champion in Australia, returns to the hard-court tournament after missing it last year when his visa was revoked and he was deported from the country because he isn’t vaccinated against COVID-19. He also couldn’t compete at the 2022 U.S. Open.
Fourth-seeded Djokovic will open his bid for a 10th Australian Open title against Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena in the tournament
which begins Monday. Iga Swiatek, the women’s No. 1-ranked player, takes on German Jule Niemeier, who is ranked No.68, in the opening round. The Polish player was a semifinalist at Melbourne Park in 2022, a year in which she won the French and U.S. Open titles.
But the main firstround focus will be on Nadal, who faces a potentially challenging match against British player Jack Draper. Draper, who is 21, was a semifinalist in the
Ronaldo left off FIFA award list
ZURICH, JAN 12 (AP): Cristiano Ronaldo was left off the 14-player shortlist for the annual Best FIFA Men’s Player award for the first time, with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé among those selected.
Ronaldo, who was released by Manchester United and benched by Portugal during the World Cup, won the FIFA award the first two times it was handed out — in 2016 and 2017 — and was among the three finalists the following three years. This was the first time he was not even selected as a contender by a FIFA-appointed expert panel.
The award was rebranded in 2016 follow -
ing a six-year period where the former FIFA World Player of the Year Award had merged with the annual Ballon d’Or. Ronaldo finished seventh in the voting last year, when Robert Lewandowski won for the second time in a row ahead of Messi and Mohamed Salah.
The 37-year-old Portuguese star joined Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr last month, seemingly marking the end of his European club career.
Aside from Messi, the only member of Argentina’s World Cup-winning team to make the list of nominees is forward Julián Álvarez.
Lewandowski is also on the list, which includes just four players who did not play at the World Cup.
Next Gen Championships in November and will also play in a semifinal of the Adelaide International on Friday.
Another openinground highlight has fivetime Australian Open finalist Andy Murray against Italian Matteo Berrettini, a former Wimbledon finalist who is the No. 13-seeded player. Murray defeated Australian Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-3 in an exhibition match on Thursday and is pleased with his form.
“It is always difficult
in exhibition matches to play like it is the first round of a Grand Slam but I wanted to try to leave everything out on the court to give my body the best preparation, to see how I was moving, to see how I was serving, and it went well,” Murray said.
The potential men’s quarterfinals by seeding are: Nadal vs. No. 7 Daniil Medvedev in what would be a rematch of last year’s final at Melbourne Park, won by Nadal after dropping the initial two sets, and No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. No. 6 Felix AugerAliassime in the top half; and Djokovic vs. No. 5 Andrey Rublev, and No. 2 Casper Ruud vs. No. 8 Taylor Fritz in the bottom half.
Nadal has a leading 22 Grand Slam singles titles, one more than Djokovic.
pressure back on Sri Lanka.
His attempt to take the aerial route again backfired when his lofted extra drive was caught by longoff against de Silva. After Rahul got his fifty in 93 balls on a no-ball, Kuldeep Yadav took India closer to victory with a fierce cut through backward point for a boundary.
Rahul applied finishing touches to the chase with flicks and inside edges fetching him boundaries off Rajitha, followed by a top-edge on pull flying over keeper’s head to make it three fours in an over. Kuldeep finished off the chase with a four slapped through mid-off to give India series win.
Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 215 all out in 39.4 overs (Nuwanidu Fernando 50, Kusal Mendis 34, Mohammed Siraj 3/30, Kuldeep Yadav 3/51) lost to India 219/6 in 43.2 overs (KL Rahul 64 not out, Hardik Pandya 36; Chamika Karunaratne 2/51, Lahiru Kumara 2/64) by four wickets
Aus withdraw from ODI series against Afghanistan
MELBOURNE, JAN 12 (AGENCIES): Australia’s men’s team has withdrawn from their one-day international (ODI) series against Afghanistan in March following further restrictions on women’s and girls’ rights imposed by the Taliban, Cricket Australia (CA) said on Thursday. Afghanistan’s Taliban-led administration last month imposed a ban on women attending universities. Girls have been banned from high school since March. They have also been excluded from parks and gyms. Australia and Afghanistan were scheduled to play three ODIs in the United Arab Emirates but CA scrapped the series after “extensive consultation” with stakeholders, including the Australian government.
HYDERABAD,
JAN 12 (IANS): Chennaiyin FC played out a 1-1 draw against Hyderabad FC in a Hero Indian Super League 2022-23 match at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium, here on Thursday.
After a barren firsthalf, in-form striker Petar Sliskovic hit the opening goal of the match for Chennaiyin in the 57th minute before Bartholomew Ogbeche converted a penalty kick to level the scores in the 87th minute.
The Croatian star Sliskovic became the joint
top-scorer in the on-going season by scoring his eighth goal. Looking to dominate the proceedings, both the sides began with a similar 4-2-3-1 formation, controlling the midfield areas. However, Chennaiyin looked more impressive amongst the two as they consistently kept taking the ball into the opposition box, piling up the pressure on Hyderabad defenders with their quick combinations and speed.
It was Sliskovic, who broke the deadlock in the third quarter with a blazing
header to put Chennaiyin 1-0 ahead in the game from another Aakash Sangwan delivery from the corner. However, Hyderabad made a comeback just three minutes before the final whistle when Ogbeche struck the equaliser from the spot after Vafa Hakhamaneshi brought down Javier Siverio in the box. Thomas Brdaric’s men will now return home to face ATK Mohun Bagan on January 21 whereas Hyderabad take on East Bengal FC in an away fixture on January 20.
Kasatkina, Badosa into Adelaide semis, Kenin battles back in Hobart
ADELAIDE, JAN 12 (AGENCIES): World number eight Daria Kasatkina stumbled to close out the match but progressed to the semi-finals of the Adelaide International 2 with a 6-3 7-6(3) win over Petra Kvitova on Thursday.
Twice Wimbledon champion Kvitova was at her most erratic, spraying 42 unforced errors over the court, but still managed to save two match points and hold for 6-6 in the second set at the Australian Open warm-up. The hurricane never arrived and Kasatkina sealed the victory in the tiebreak to move on to a lastfour clash against Spain’s Paula Badosa, who later beat Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia 7-6(5) 7-5 in her
quarter-final. Kasatkina, a top 10 player four years ago before plummeting down the rankings and almost giving up the sport, said she was looking to maintain her consistency after finishing 2022 well and making a decent start to the new season.
Later on Thursday, Swiss Olympic champion Belinda Bencic survived a second-set scare to beat France’s fourth-seeded Caroline Garcia 6-2 3-6 6-4.
Bencic will next face familiar foe Veronika Kudermetova, who saved five match points in a battling win over American Danielle Collins 4-6 7-6(5) 6-1.
Sofia Kenin has experienced the ups and downs of tennis like few others since winning the Australian Open in 2020 and she continued to show signs of progress in the quarterfinals of the Hobart International.
Advisor YR&S Er Zale Neikha flags off ‘Rally of Nagaland’
Correspondent
KOHIMA, JAN 12 (NPN): Rally of Nagaland, the 4th and final round of Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) organised by Federation of Motor Sports Council of India (FMSCI) and hosted by Nagaland Adventure Club (NAC) in collaboration with Government of Nagaland, was officially flagged off by advisor Youth Resources & Sports, Er Zale Neikha during a programme at Hockey Ground, IG Stadium, here on Thursday.
In his speech, Neikha the event held here in the State was a significant one for motor sports lovers, saying, he was also a big fan of the world of motor

World Cup Hockey: No support from anywhere
ers also contribute; every player pays 1,000 pound per year to play for Wales,” said head coach Daniel Newcombe said ahead of his side’s opening match against England.
ROURKELA, JAN 12 (PTI): The others get paid to represent their nation but this bunch of mavericks pay to play for the flag.
The passion to play hockey despite overwhelming odds, it seems, is the tonic for Wales players which keeps the excitement bubbling over.
With next to negligible crowd support -- the biggest stadium in the country can accommodate 200 spectators -- and player having to shell out 1,000 pounds every year to play
for the national team, only a band of diehard athletes can manage to dribble past the hardships and still sport broad smiles on their faces.
Wales, who are making their FIH Men’s World Cup debut here, will be pleasantly surprised -- or, perhaps, awestruck -- when they see the stadiums in Bhubaneswar and Rourke-
la packed to the rafters.
Their journey to India perhaps hasn’t been businessclass either as the team had to resort to crowd-funding to raise 25,000 pounds to cover flights, accommodation and meals in the two host cities.
“Crowd-funding is part of the means to reduce the cost to the players. Play-
India and Spain are the other teams they will have to contend with in Group D. “Hockey is a small sport and our national stadium can take about 200 people, which is very different from the one here (21,000-capacity Birsa Munda Stadium).
“Our funding from the government is limited and so players also contribute. But due to our recent successes by qualifying for bigger tournaments, we have got more trips and
our government has been really helpful. We have got a shirt sponsor now and this has reduced the cost (on the players),” added Newcombe.
Wales had made it to the showpiece through the European qualifying event in Cardiff, their country’s capital. Newcombe takes pride in saying that his side has made it to the showpiece event three years after hitting rock-bottom in world hockey.
“We need public exposure, sponsor to grow. But, we have moved from 36th spot to 15th (in FIH rankings) in the third year of European hockey and now to the World Cup,”Captain Rupert Shipperley said.

He urged the gathered motor rally fans from the State to participate, learn more about the motor rally at the same time take the best advantage from the experienced people present at the event.
He expressed hope that Nagaland Adventure Club (NAC) would continue to promote motor sporting and put Nagaland on the map of the country with the support of Federation of Motor Sports Club of India (FMSCI).
Further, he wished success to all the participants from across the country and hoped that they would have a pleasant stay. Neikha also con-
veyed greetings from the chief minister. The flag off programme was chaired by NAC member Bharat Prasad, convenor of the event, Peter Rutsa delivered the welcome address while INRC Blueband Sports chief promoter, Premnath K delivered the keynote address on the event.
The Khonoma stage will be held on January 13 along the Khonoma to Dzüleke route from 6 a.m. onwards while the Kohima stage will be held on January 14 from Mission Road to IG Stadium. The podium ceremony will be held at RCEMPA, Jotsoma, on January 14 at 4 p.m.
Previously, the first leg was held at Chennai, second one at Coimbatore and the third leg at Bengaluru.
Malaysia Open: HS Prannoy storms into quarterfinals, Jolly-Gayatri exit
KUALA LUMPUR, JAN 12 (IANS): Continuing his winning start of the season, H.S. Prannoy sailed into the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament while Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand was knocked out by Bulgarian duo of Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva in the women’s doubles pre-quarterfinals here on Thursday.
Playing on Court 1 of the Axiata Arena, World No 8 Prannoy registered a 21-9, 15-21, 21-16 victory over 19th-ranked Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in
over one hour of play and levelled up the head-tohead record with the Indonesian.
Prannoy had a clear dominance in the first game as he wrapped it up with a 21-9 scoreline. Wardoyo, however, staged a comeback in the second game as the Indian player could not cope with his stunning shots and the match went
into the decider. In the deciding game, both the players were engaged in a close fight initially before Prannoy opened up a five-point lead before the change of ends and quickly went on to seal the victory.
Earlier in the day, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand’s run come to an end with a 13-21, 21-15, 17-21 loss to Bulgaria’s Gabriela and Stefani in the women’s doubles roundof-16 match.
